Travelers to the World Cup

Qatar 2022 World Cup

World Cup Travel Insurance Options

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is an excellent adventure for football (soccer) fans. However, traveling abroad always comes with risks. We strongly recommend that all travelers have some insurance to minimize these risks for you, your family, and friends traveling with you. Of course, here at InternationalInsurance.com, we strongly recommend that you take out comprehensive travel insurance that will cover medical costs, including medical evacuation, while traveling abroad. Confirm what your current policy covers for the period you’ll be away, and check what circumstances and activities are not included in your policy. Remember, regardless of how healthy you are, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you likely can’t afford to travel. Most domestic insurance plans will not pay for a traveler’s medical expenses overseas or medical evacuation costs. With that said, what policies and plans are the right ones for your situation?

Younger travelers might consider a more basic plan covering travel and emergency medical expenses.

FIFA WorldCup Trip Insurance Plan

Trawick

Safe Travels Voyager

  • Comprehensive coverage for trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and post-departure travel coverage
  • Cancel for Any Reason available
  • Up to $250,000 in emergency medical coverage

If you are older or traveling with family, consider more comprehensive plans that cover a wider range of medical expenses.

World Cup Travel Medical Plans

WorldTrips Atlas travel insurance

  • Emergency medical, evacuation, repatriation benefits
  • Choose between the basic and more extensive coverage
  • Meets Schengen visa insurance requirements
  • 24/7 worldwide travel and emergency medical assistance

When reviewing your options, consider your physical and mental health before heading to the World Cup. At a minimum, make sure you take care of vaccinations before you travel. At least eight or more weeks before you depart, you should make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your itinerary as well as any implications for your health, particularly if you have an existing medical condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides information for travelers is a great resource for advice and tips when traveling abroad.

For the World Cup in Qatar, consider the following:

The standard of private medical facilities in large cities such as Sao Paulo, Brasilia, and Rio de Janeiro is comparable to most other developed countries. Other larger cities in Qatar also have small private hospitals providing adequate services. Outside of major cities, however, facilities can be minimal. Treatment at private clinics and hospitals is costly. Doctors and hospitals may expect cash payment before providing medical services, including emergency care. In the event of a severe illness or accident, medical evacuation to one of Qatar’s large cities would be necessary. Costs would be considerable (in the tens of thousands of dollars).

Visitors to Qatar are at risk for yellow fever. Yellow fever, transmitted by mosquitoes, is a potentially fatal viral disease. However, it is preventable by vaccination. We strongly suggest that visitors are vaccinated against yellow fever before traveling to Qatar.

Malaria is a very present risk in Qatar. Dengue fever and other insect-borne illnesses are also prevalent, with a higher occurrence during the wet seasons (May to August and November to January). Therefore,  all visitors should take measures to avoid insect bites. Use insect repellent at all times, wear long, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, stay inside when possible, and use a mosquito net at night.

Other infectious diseases, including cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis, are prevalent. Rabies is also present in Qatar. We suggest you drink bottled water or suggest you boil all drinking water. Avoid ice cubes and raw and undercooked food.

Travelling to Qatar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup? Here's what you need to know

A countdown installation for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Doha, Qatar.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is just days away now. So if you're heading off to Qatar, make sure you're ready for kick-off by reading some of our top travel tips below.

World Cup football (also known as soccer, for our dozen or so North American readers) promises a world-class spectacle. The host cities usually put on quite the show for the millions of tourists who flock to their stadiums from overseas.

So it’s always a great time to not only see some of the world’s best players compete for the glory of their flags, but to take a dive into the best a host city has to offer – be it food, culture, history, or the natural surrounds.

As always, when you’re travelling to another country, there’s a lot to get organised. You’ll need to sort out your travel money cards , find a credit card for overseas transactions and ATMs, and of course pack a travel insurance policy that covers your needs.

Let’s get into it!

When is the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

How to get a visa for qatar during the fifa world cup 2022, what local laws and customs should i be aware of in qatar, rules for covid-19 in qatar during the world cup, travel money for qatar (prepaid travel cards, travel credit and debit cards), travel insurance tips for qatar.

The FIFA World Cup in Qatar is from 21 November to 18 December 2022.

Qatar weather in November

Qatar is known for its hot, dry weather between May and October, and its cooler weather between December and February. But November is a transitional period, meaning you’ll still get warm weather, but not quite the scorching heat you’d see in the months prior.

If you’re heading over to Qatar for the World Cup, then you’ll want to pack for warm days and slightly cooler nights.

But keep in mind that local customs make modest clothing the preference. There are also strict Islamic dress codes in Qatar, although visitors aren’t always subject to them. So it’s best not to bring anything too revealing or tight-fitting, out of respect for their cultures.

Do women from overseas need to wear a hijab in Qatar during the World Cup?

As foreigners, women won’t need to bring a hijab or abaya. However, dresses that go past your knees and cover your shoulders are a respectful way of adhering to local customs. And the same goes with men – dressing modestly will do you favours with the locals.

According to the Australian government’s Smartraveller site, those looking to enter Qatar during the World Cup will need to apply for an approved Hayya Card .

The Hayya Card is a little different from a standard visa, and they’re only issuing them to World Cup ticket-holders.

In fact, Qatar isn’t actually issuing any regular travel visas between 1 November 2022 and 23 January 2023. So getting one of these is pretty much your only option if you’re heading over for the World Game, or even just for regular travel during those dates.

Visas and travel insurance

Typically speaking, if your visa is refused or you don’t actually have a valid one for the country you’re travelling to, your travel insurance provider won’t cover any claims resulting from that. This means cancellation fees and deposits for accommodation or activities won’t be reimbursed. The reason for this is that obtaining a valid visa is seen as your responsibility, and therefore within your control.

Local laws and customs in Qatar differ greatly from those in Australia. So much so, that things which aren’t illegal here may carry serious penalties over there.

Here are some examples of things which are best to avoid, should you land yourself a red card with authorities or the locals:

  • Public displays of intimacy (regardless of your gender or sexual orientation), as it doesn’t align with their preference for modesty
  • Obscene language or gestures (even if your team’s opponents just scored a goal)
  • Taking photos of local people, particularly women, as it’s illegal there
  • Same-sex relationships are also illegal in Qatar. However, it’s worth noting that host authorities won’t be placing restrictions on non-married friends or couples of the same sex (including LGBTQI+ people) sharing accommodation during the Cup.

This isn’t an exhaustive list, and there are some which might surprise you to learn about. So check out the Smartraveller page for Qatar for more information.

Can you drink alcohol in Qatar?

The sale and consumption of alcohol in Qatar is strictly regulated. In fact, authorities are creating new policies to facilitate the sale of booze exclusively during the World Cup.

The drinking age in Qatar is 21, and alcohol is only available at licensed hotel restaurants and bars to visitors. It’s actually illegal to drink outside of these licensed premises, so there are no ‘roadies’ on the way to a match. In fact, it’s best not to be drunk in public at all, as it’s considered an offence in Qatar. Also, you’ll have to walk right past the duty-free bottle shops  at the airport, as importing alcohol into the country is strictly prohibited. Talk about a dry country!

Can Qatari laws affect your travel insurance policy?

When it comes to an international travel insurance policy, the general exclusions section of the product disclosure statement (PDS) is always worth paying attention to.

You’ll usually find that your insurance won’t cover a claim if it’s due to you breaking local laws. This means that if you end up in hot water with the authorities in Qatar, causing you to miss your flight home for example, then your insurance claim for travel delays and interruptions might be denied by your provider. That could leave you with a pricey, last-minute ticket home as your only option.

Football fans travelling to Qatar for the World Cup won't have to present a negative PCR test before boarding their flights, or register with the country's EHTERAZ contact tracing app.

If you acquire a case of Covid while in Qatar, you will have to comply with Qatar's  Ministry of Public Health guidelines .

COVID-19 travel insurance for Qatar

When travelling overseas these days, it’s important to check if your travel insurance policy covers COVID-19. In some cases, there might only be a very basic level of cover (for things like medical and cancellation costs), and in other cases no cover at all for the virus.

Another important thing to note is that Smartraveller advice levels play a big part in determining whether an insurance provider will cover your trip.

In many cases, a travel insurance PDS will state that once a country is listed on Smartraveller as being a Level 3 – ‘Reconsider your need to travel’ or Level – 4 ‘Do not travel’, your policy will not provide coverage for that destination. That’s because it’s risky to go there and risky for you to stay there.

During the pandemic, pretty much everywhere had a ‘Do not travel’ warning. But in Qatar, at the time of writing, the advice is at Level 2 – ‘Exercise a high degree of caution’.

While advice levels can be affected by a country’s COVID-19 case numbers, it can also be affected by other factors like civil war or unrest, natural disasters, and terrorism threats. So, it’s always worth having a scroll through the Smartraveller site for your destinations.

When you’re heading overseas, there’s a fairly concrete chance you’ll need to pay for something at some point in time. But using your everyday bank card overseas can be costly due to the foreign exchange rate and ATM fees. However, you might be able to avoid fees while overseas by using one of the following:

  • Prepaid travel money cards
  • Travel debit cards
  • Travel credit cards

Prepaid travel money cards for Qatar

A prepaid travel money card, sometimes known as a cash-passport, lets you pay for things in an overseas currency, avoiding the need to pay a currency conversion fee on your everyday debit card or credit card.

Aussie dollars go in one end, Qatari Riyal comes out the other.

They usually have a locked-in exchange rate, make it easier to budget while overseas (because you’ll have to feel guilty about loading more of your money onto it), and may be safer than carrying cash.

Just make sure you find a prepaid travel money card with a good exchange rate, low fees, and a variety of available currencies by comparing some of the available prepaid travel money cards .

Travel debit and credit cards for Qatar

Travel cards are just debit and credit cards which are travel-friendly. This means that they might charge low or no overseas transaction or ATM fees, freeing up more of your budget for having fun while you’re away.

Have a look at our travel debit card or travel credit card comparisons to see if you can find a travel-friendly card, or find out if the one you currently have holds up to standards.

Also, if you’ve already sorted a travel credit card, it’s worth checking out if you're eligible for your card’s complimentary travel insurance that includes cover for COVID-19.

  • Excess fees. When making a travel insurance claim, you might need to pay what is called an excess fee . When you pay excess it’s essentially a certain part of the total value of your claim. The rest gets paid by the insurance provider. Excess varies from provider to provider, but usually the cheaper ones have higher excess fees. So, make sure you know what costs you’re up for in the event you need to make a claim.
  • Pre-existing conditions. Travel insurance providers ask you to declare any pre-existing medical conditions at the time of purchasing the policy. If you fail to do so, the insurance company can reject a claim you later make regarding that condition. Also, remember that pregnancies are considered as a pre-existing condition.
  • Unattended baggage. Remember that if your bags go missing while you’ve left them unattended, your insurance provider may reject your claim. In fact, even when you leave your bags with the hotel concierge after you’ve checked out, that’s often considered ‘unattended’ in the provider’s eyes. So, leaving your luggage with the concierge at the hotel could result in your provider refusing to reimburse you for it, if it goes missing.
  • Report incidents ASAP. Whether you’ve injured yourself, have had your bags lost by the airline, or had your purse stolen, you need to report any incident as soon as possible. Again, if you’ve read your policy’s product disclosure statement (PDS) carefully, you’ll know the exact documentation that you will be required to submit with your claim. Generally, these will be doctors reports, hospital bills, police reports, or receipts, depending on the nature of your claim. So, make sure you hold onto these when it comes to contacting your travel insurance provider.

Top Tips for Travelling to Qatar World Cup

by Sarah Forster

2 November 2022

The countdown is on for Qatar World Cup 2022. Will this be our year?

Ahead of this winter’s biggest sporting event, the FCDO have released 6 top tips for fans travelling to Qatar to soak up the atmosphere.

The FCDO advises any Brit planning on attending the World cup to:

1. Be prepared

Follow our Travel Advice on how to prepare for your trip, covering passport validity, medical care and money. You can find additional advice on the FCDO checklist here .

2. Check FCDO Travel Advice

The FCDO have set up a Qatar World Cup 2022 Travel Advice Page . This page is kept under constant review so it is worthwhile signing up to receive email alerts to stay up to date on any developments throughout the tournament.

3. Follow Qatar Entry Requirements

All fans will need a Hayya Card, which is a form of fan ID, as well as proof of negative Covid-19 result through a valid PCR or rapid antigen test certificate. All accommodation must be arranged before flying out!

4. Purchase Travel Insurance

Without an adequate Travel Insurance policy, fans could risk a medical bill of thousands of pounds. It’s essential to check that your policy covers you for all destinations, pre-existing medical conditions, Covid-19 and planned activities. Read our blog here on how to book effective Travel Insurance.

5. Do’s and Don’ts

Qatari laws and customs are different to those in the UK and carry serious penalties for things that aren’t an offence here in the Untied Kingdom. The availability of alcohol and associated laws will be different to previous World Cup tournaments.

6. Steer Clear of Drugs

Qatar has a zero-tolerance approach to drugs and visitors can expect a severe penalty for possession of even residual amounts. Punishment can include lengthy custodial sentences.

Other Useful Info

British nationals needing help or advice will be able to contact the FCDO by phone 24/7 on +44 (0)20 7008 5000 or by calling the Embassy locally on +974 4496 2000.  Fans in Qatar can access the Qatari emergency services by dialling 999.

Do you think Gareth and the team will bring it home this time?

World Cup 2022 Qatar - Travel Insurance Starting from 48 AED

The FIFA World Cup 2022 is going to start super soon - and that can only mean one thing: the holiday season is well and truly upon us! Well, for those of us who are football fans and were hoping to get tickets to the event, that probably does mean two things.

We'll no doubt be feeling excited about seeing our favourite teams play in the tournament and there'll also be that little niggling doubt at the back of our minds concerning booking a good travel insurance that covers you and your family when in trouble. If you are heading to Qatar for the World Cup then make sure you're ready for kick-off by reading some of our top travel tips below.

Qatar has started to welcome tourists from all over the world. The country itself is a unique place and its welcoming population gives you an unforgettable experience.

There are a lot of things you need to organize when traveling to another country. You'll need to sort out your travel money cards, find a credit card for overseas transactions and ATMs, and of course pack a travel insurance policy just in case anything happens.

In situations such as medical emergencies or flight cancellations, having travel insurance in place will help ensure that you get the highest level of service and assistance. After all, the only shocks you want on your World Cup 2022 trip are shocking results of your supporting teams right?!

What type of insurance do you need?

If you are traveling to Qatar for the World Cup 2022 and plan on making only one entry and exit from the country, then a single-trip policy might be right for you. You will be covered for the duration of your trip to Qatar, and it should begin on the date you depart for that country and end when you return home. The level of coverage required depends on what type of trip is being made—business or pleasure. For some, summer vacation is a chance to spend two weeks basking in the sun; for others, it's an opportunity to take a week-long ski trip. Those on a gap year who are traveling extensively may need more extensive travel insurance than retirees taking short trips, or those simply visiting family. When you plan a trip, think about the kind of activities you'll be doing and where; then buy insurance that covers those risks.

What would be the cost?

Once you’ve made your plans to visit the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, you can get price quotes depending on what kind of trip you want. Travel insurance rates are based on the likelihood of a claim: with greater risk comes increased premiums. a non-hazardous activity trip, the main risks covered will be based on travel delays or cancellation and loss of baggage. The policy may also offer protection against personal injury or illness (accident & negligence) during the trip to and from Qatar. Insurance rates will vary from one insurer to another, but there's no reason to worry—there are many insurance companies out there that offer competitive prices. Starting from 48 AED you get travel insurance that covers Qatar & UAE both.

What travel insurance do I need to visit Qatar?

Qatar is part of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) which is a group of Arab nations in the Gulf Region. Coverage for this area, and Qatar specifically, can be found under Worldwide policy types provided by most major international carriers. There are lots of different insurers to choose from, and many sell online or through mobile apps. You can apply for it on our online portal and have a policy within 60 seconds.

When is the best time to purchase my World Cup 2022 in Qatar Travel Insurance?

The answer is that there's no single perfect moment. You can buy your policy as soon as you've booked your trip, and the coverage will begin either from when it was sold or on a specified date—so choose what works for you!

The single-trip insurance policy you buy generally begins at the time of departure and ends with your return home. Some policies become operative immediately after purchase, so it’s important not to wait too long before buying coverage if that's what you want.

If your trip is canceled by the tour operator for whatever reason and this policy was not in place, you would have to recoup these losses yourself.

Can Qatari laws affect your travel insurance policy?

When considering an international travel insurance policy, it is always wise to carefully read the product disclosure statement (or PDS).

If you break the law in Qatar and are detained by local authorities, your insurance won’t cover expenses related to getting back home. and then your insurance claim for travel delays might be denied by your provider. That could leave you with a pricey, last-minute ticket home as the only option.

Our family is on the trip, are we all required to have Individual Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance offers flexibility: you can choose to buy an individual plan or a family policy depending on what suits your needs best. It’s usually best to buy a separate travel insurance policy for any member of your traveling group who has specific medical needs or will be out of the country for longer than other members.

For many people, a family travel insurance plan is the most convenient way to ensure that multiple members of your family are covered for emergencies and other expenses when you’re on vacation. However, each insurer has its own definition of “family,” so always check the details carefully to make sure it fits yours!

The world cup in Qatar is about to be underway, and a dream to attend a global event of this stature would be a miracle for some of us. To witness the emerging talent and the superstars Ronaldo and Messi gracing the football pitch is what a football fan fantasies of. The 22nd Fifa world cup will take place in the middle east, Qatar, and one must travel all the way to the country to watch the world cup. But do you know what is one of the most significant things that should be part of your world cup fever preparation? Travel Insurance.

It is highly suggestive to get travel insurance if you are travelling overseas. It can pay for lost luggage, medical costs, and other losses in addition to trip cancellation fees. Casualties from both domestic and international travel may be covered.

What is Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance aims to protect from potential risks and financial losses. The risks can range from minor annoyances like missed flight connections and delayed luggage to severe problems like serious injuries or illnesses. If something happens during your trip, your travel insurance will come in handy.

It is vital to check the coverage before you buy travel insurance. Many insurance companies offer insurance, but only a few offer the best coverage.

Importance of Travel Insurance

An event of misfortune can happen anytime and anywhere. You don’t have control over certain situations that life has installed for us. Imagine you are travelling overseas and suddenly get a call that a very close relative is critically ill. What will you do in a situation like this? The international package you took will offer their empathy, but it won’t refund the money.

These are the reasons why you should invest in the best travel insurance. Here are a few more reasons why you should get travel insurance.

Loss of Baggage and Documents:

Your insurance will cover the cost of getting a new or duplicate passport if one is lost. You will be reimbursed for your loss up to an established amount if something goes missing.

Accident and Injury:

A serious medical issue or physical injury could occur at any time. Travel insurance is crucial because of this. In an emergency, it will ensure you receive the proper medical care, whether that means being taken to the hospital or having a relative fly to you if you're a student.

Fraudulent/Theft Activity:

When you are overseas, it is hard to take care of everything. But that wouldn't be a concern if you had travel insurance. Up to 12 hours before you report the incident for the first time, your insurance will reimburse you for the money you lost due to stolen credit or debit cards.

Travel Insurance for Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar

It is true when they say that football fans are the craziest fans in the world. Wherever the world cup is, the fans never betray their players and countries. So, if you are one of those crazy football fans, you must buy travel insurance to ensure safe and sound travel. These plans can be modified depending on the nation and your unique travel and health needs. An international health insurance policy is more appropriate for you if you frequently travel abroad and need health insurance to help you with your comprehensive medical care.

New US immigrant insurance

New US Immigrant health insurance

The Trump administration had introduced rules making it mandatory for prospective new US immigrants to show proof of adequate US health insurance while applying for the immigrant visa. The aim of this mandatory US health insurance for immigrants is to reduce the burden on the US hospitals, the overall US health care system and finally on US tax payers by uninsured new immigrants.

At American Visitor insurance we offer immigrant health insurance plans which work well for prospective new US immigrants. After buying this immigrant medical insurance, customers will immediately receive the health insurance policy document by email. Customers can use this immigrant insurance document as proof of US health insurance while applying for the Immigrant visa. Given this rule as well as the very high cost of healthcare in the US, it is strongly recommended to buy medical insurance for new US immigrants.

England and Wales fans urged to follow World Cup travel tips: Qatar 2022

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) issues 6 top tips for travelling England and Wales fans to help avoid preventable problems.

World Cup Travel Advice

  • FCDO issues 6 top tips to help travelling fans enjoy the tournament in Qatar
  • One month to go to the start of the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup
  • England and Wales bosses Gareth Southgate and Rob Page encourage supporters to check out Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office ( FCDO ) Travel Advice

With only 1 month to go until the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup kicks off in Qatar, the FCDO has issued 6 top tips for travelling England and Wales fans. Following these tips will help fans avoid preventable problems and enjoy the tournament.

Any Brit planning to attend the World Cup is advised to:

prepare before you go. Our checklist has all the practical steps that fans need to think about before they head off to the tournament, from passport validity to health prescriptions

read our Travel Advice and sign up for e-mail alerts. World Cup-specific information can be found at gov.uk/qatar2022 . Our Qatar travel advice is kept under constant review so fans should sign up for email alerts to stay up to date on the latest developments throughout the tournament

follow the entry requirements for Qatar. To enter Qatar, fans must have a Hayya Card (a form of fan ID), as well as proof of a negative COVID-19 result through a valid PCR or rapid antigen test certificate. Accommodation must be arranged before travelling out

get travel insurance . Without it, fans risk medical bills which may run to thousands of pounds. Fans should check that insurance covers them for all destinations, medical needs, COVID-19 costs and planned activities

know the do’s and don’ts. Qatari laws and customs are very different to those in the UK. There may be serious penalties for doing something that is not an offence in the UK. The availability of alcohol, and associated laws, will be different to previous tournaments

steer clear of drugs. Qatar takes a zero tolerance approach and visitors can expect a severe penalty for the possession of even residual amounts. Punishment can include lengthy custodial sentences

Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said:

The countdown to the World Cup is on, with only a month to go until the action kicks off in Qatar. We want all travelling Brits to enjoy their World Cup experience, and they are more likely to do so if they prepare before they go. Following our 6 top tips and signing up to Qatar travel advice email alerts will help fans have the best possible time at the tournament. The FCDO is working closely with a range of partners, including the Football Associations, fan representatives and UK Police, to provide practical information and advice to travelling supporters.

England Manager, Gareth Southgate said:

I know how much our fans look forward to watching England at major tournaments. With only 1 month to go, I would suggest anyone travelling to the World Cup signs up for the UK Government’s travel alerts. As well as keeping them across all the information they need, they will get important tips too for getting the most out of following England away. We look forward to seeing them all at the finals.

Wales Manager, Rob Page said:

Everyone in Wales is looking forward to seeing Cymru in the World Cup, our first appearance in the competition since 1958. For those fans who are travelling to Qatar, we know how excited they are to be watching Cymru play at the tournament but it’s incredibly important that they keep up to date with the very latest information and advice. For the best possible experience, we advise our fans to sign-up to the Qatar travel advice email alerts.

Ashley Brown, England Fan Embassy Team, part of the Football Supporters Association said:

Travelling to World Cups always requires a level of planning for supporters to make sure we get the most out of a tournament – whether that’s match days, sightseeing or general safety. Qatar has very different laws to the UK and we’d encourage all fans to familiarise themselves with the FCDO ’s 6 top tips and to follow the FSA for further supporter-specific updates.

Paul Corkrey, Fan Embassy Wales said:

This is our first World cup in a generation and we know the Welsh fans will be determined to enjoy the experience. It is a trip to the unknown but information is available and we urge the Red Wall to bookmark the FCDO Travel Advice website.

The UK will have a consular presence in Qatar and across the region throughout the tournament. British nationals needing help or advice will be able to contact the FCDO by phone 24/7 on +44 (0)20 7008 5000 or by calling the Embassy locally on +974 4496 2000.  Fans in Qatar can access the Qatari emergency services by dialling 999.

Fans planning to travel elsewhere in the region should check the Travel Advice for each location they plan to visit or transit through. Rules and requirements will vary from country to country.

Watch: Referee Stephanie Frappart escorted from pitch by police after Greek Cup final fury

Trailblazing woman referee Stephanie Frappart had to be escorted to safety by police after angry confrontations following the Greek Cup final.

Frappart, the first female in charge of a men’s World Cup match in 2022, was the target of intimidating scenes following three red cards in the game.

Giannis Kotsiras of Panathinaikos and Aris pair Jean Jules and Vladimir Darida had been dismissed before Panathinaikos eventually won the game 1-0.

But as the match concluded, tempers spilled over among the losing club’s players and staff, with team president Theodoros Karypidis said to be involved in confrontations. Police intervened and eventually escorted Frappart off the pitch for her protection, according to reports in Greece.

Greek football authorities have yet to comment on the treatment of Frappart, a pioneer of women’s refereeing. She is best known for making history on Dec 1 2022 as first the woman to referee a men’s World Cup match, overseeing the game between Costa Rica and Germany in Qatar . She was also the first female referee in Ligue 1 and was in charge for the 2019 Uefa Super Cup clash between Liverpool and Chelsea .

There had been no fans inside the Panthessaliko Stadium in Volos on Saturday night, as the venue has not yet installed the CCTV system required.

Georgios Vagiannidis eventually scored the match-winning goal to secure a Europa League place next season. Karypidis was seen storming onto the pitch protesting against the referee, while implying in his official statements at the end of the game that the final was a set-up.

It marks the 20th time that Panathinaikos, owned by Giannis Alafouzos, has won the Greek Cup.

Frappart has also officiated an international friendly between England and Australia , the first female official to oversee a men’s international match at Wembley.

Hardik Pandya absent as first batch of Team India players leave for T20 World Cup

Mumbai Indians skipper is widely rumoured to have fallen apart from wife Natasa

Copy of 207121-01-02-1716726526721

Dubai: Hardik Pandya was the notable absentee as the first batch of Team India’s players left for the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to begin next month in the US and the West Indies.

The absence of Mumbai Indians skipper has raised speculations about his potential divorce from Natasa Stankovic, who earlier posted a cryptic message on social media. The all-rounder’s relationship with his wife has soured in the recent past although none of the two have officially addressed the speculation.

Stankovic also removed ‘Pandya’ surname from her Instagram handle adding fuel to the speculations. She was also missing from the IPL matches.

There are also reports which suggest that Pandya has travelled to London for a brief training stint, and is expected to join the team directly at the T20 World Cup.

Pandya suffered a horrid time at the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season as the captain of the Mumbai team. He faced heavy criticism and was often booed for replacing Rohit Sharma which showed on his performances in the field.

Earlier in the day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared photos of the players at the airport, including captain Rohit Sharma, Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel, the support staff and head coach Rahul Dravid.

T20 World Cup squad:

Rohit Sharma (captain), Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj.

12 people were injured by turbulence on a Qatar Airways flight to Dublin

Emergency services attended to 12 injured from turbulence on a Doha-Dublin flight.

The Qatar Airways plane met turbulence over Turkey, injuring passengers and crew.

This follows a deadly turbulence incident on a London-Singapore flight earlier this week.

Emergency services are attending to 12 people who were injured due to turbulence on a flight from Doha to Dublin.

The Qatar Airways Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner plane landed shortly before 1 p.m.

Flight QR017 was met by airport police and Dublin Airport's fire and rescue department after six passengers and six crew members sustained injuries from mid-flight turbulence, DAA, Dublin Airport's operator, told Business Insider.

13.30 update: ✈️ Qatar Airways flight QR017 from Doha landed safely as scheduled at Dublin Airport shortly before 13.00 on Sunday. The Qatar Airways plane was flying over Turkey when it encountered turbulence, DAA said.

In a statement shared with BI, Qatar Airways said: "Qatar Airways can confirm that flight QR017 a Boeing B787-9 from Doha to Dublin has landed safely. A small number of passengers and crew sustained minor injuries in flight and are now receiving medical attention. The matter is now subject to an internal investigation. The safety and security of our passengers and crew are our top priority."

Earlier this week, a similar incident unfolded when severe turbulence caused a death on a flight from London to Singapore.

As many as 71 passengers were injured, some of whom were admitted to hospitals in Bangkok, where the Singapore Airlines plane was diverted following critical injuries from the turbulence.

A 73-year-old British man, Geoff Kitchen, on board, died as a result of the turbulence encountered on Flight SQ321 on Tuesday.

Images from the diverted flight show debris strewn across the cabin and blood on the ceiling.

Both incidents of severe turbulence this week occurred on Boeing aircraft. The Singapore-bound plane was a Boeing 777 .

A 737 Max 9 jet used by Alaska Airlines lost its door plug midair in January, forcing an emergency landing.

Business Insider contacted Boeing for comment.

This is a developing story…

The agreement, which the companies describe as "multi-year" and "historic," also gives OpenAI the right to display News Corp mastheads within apps like ChatGPT in response to certain questions -- presumably in cases where the answers are sourced partly or in whole from News Corp publications.
