101 of the Best Travel Quotes to Inspire Amazing Adventures

I’ve put together 101 of the best travel quotes as a reminder, motivation, and remembrance for the reasons why we travel.

I’m not just talking about the sightseeing and beach vacations. Travel is about the journey as much as the beautiful destination.

We learn about the world by experiencing new cultures and ways of living, in turn learning about ourselves.

I’ve been traveling the world for a few years – Will has been traveling for over 9 years – and the rest of the Broke Backpacker crew has put quite a dent in their passports too. I think these awesome quotes about traveling highlight some of the magnificent journeys and lessons we’ve experienced along the way.

Why? Because Travel quotes provide inspiration and capture truths about travel, adventure, and life.

Just like travel, words have the power to open our minds to completely new perspectives, which is why I hope this collection of quotes about travel and powerful words will inspire you to get out there and experience some adventurous travel yourself.

101 Best Travel Quotes

Some last words….

From funny travel quotes to inspiring words from legends past and present, here are the 101 best:

1. Travel makes you realize that no matter how much you know, there’s always more to learn.” – Nyssa P. Chopra, The Cultureur

2. We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us.” – Anonymous

This is one of my favorite quotes about traveling. A lot of people think that one travels to escape life, or that long-term travelers are running away from reality. The way I see it – sure – maybe vacations are a quick escape from the real world, but traveling is a way to embrace life’s grandest adventures. Traveling is a way for life not to escape us.

3. “Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind.” – Marty Rubin

4. “To the tourist, travel is a means to an end; to the traveler, it’s an end in itself.” – Marty Rubin

5. “to live is to travel, on a voyage more epic than the odysseys of myth – not from place to place, but through the poignant strangeness of time.” – t.l rese.

Travel Quote 2

6. “Travel often; Getting lost will help you find yourself.” – Holstee Manifesto

Some of my best travel experiences were not necessarily butterflies and rainbows. Sometimes they were uncomfortable and painful. Sometimes I have quite literally gotten lost, but in the end, these experiences have helped me find myself.

I think that is what traveling is often about: finding – or at least rediscovering – aspects of yourself.

7. “Travel has a way of stretching the mind. The stretch comes not from travel’s immediate rewards, the inevitable myriad new sights, smells and sounds, but with experiencing firsthand how others do differently what we believed to be the right and only way.” – Ralph Crawshaw

8. “a man travels the world over in search of what he needs and returns home to find it.” – george a. moore, 9. “sometimes it’s the journey that teaches you a lot about your destination.” –   drake.

This is one of the most important travel quotes. Doesn’t matter how long you’re traveling for, you’ll see new cultures, open your mind and change your way of thinking – even if it’s just a little bit. Traveling shows us sides of the world but also about yourself that you’ve never seen before. Having a different view on things helped a lot of people when it comes to making hard decisions.

10. “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture are like a tree without roots.” – Marcus Garvey

Travel Quote 3

11. Traveling is a brutality. It forces you to trust strangers and to lose sight of all that familiar comforts of home and friends. You are constantly off balance. Nothing is yours except the essential things. -air, sleep, dreams, the sea, the sky. -all things tending towards the eternal or what we imagine of it.” –  Cesare Pavese

I love this traveling the world quote from Cesare Pavese. Having been on the road for the last few years, he nailed my experience spot on. Nothing is certain – except air, sleep, the sea, the sky – but that is what traveling is about: embracing the unknown and trusting the process. The way I see it, the only thing for certain is what is happening in the now.

12. “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.” – Jawaharlal Nehru

13. “culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.” – thomas wolfe, 14. “traveling — it gives you home in a thousand strange places, then leaves you a stranger in your own land.” – ibn battuta.

This is one of the most beautiful travel quotes. Meeting so many new people, making new friends and even finding a second family, has to be one of the best aspects of traveling. Having traveled quite a bit, I can say that having multiple homes is definitely an amazing feeling, although it can also create some distance between you and your original home.

15. “Culture is a way of coping with the world by defining it in detail.” – Malcolm Bradbury

Travel Quote 4

16. “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”- Ibn Battuta

Probably one of the best travel quotes I’ve heard – the play on words, the sincerity, and the capture of what it means to travel. Traveling will undoubtedly leave you speechless, surprised, and lost for words, but those words will be found, and you will have epic stories to tell.

18. “To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” – Danny Kaye

19. “every journey is personal. every journey is spiritual. you can’t compare them, can’t replace, can’t repeat. you can bring back the memories but they only bring tears to your eyes.” – diana ambarsari, 20. “the perfect journey is never finished, the goal is always just across the next river, round the shoulder of the next mountain. there is always one more track to follow, one more mirage to explore.” – rosita forbes, 21. “travel can also be the spirit of adventure somewhat tamed, for those who desire to do something they are a bit afraid of.” – ella maillart.

Travel Quote 5

22. “Remember that happiness is a way of travel – not a destination.” –  Roy M. Goodman

I think this is one of my favorite quotes about travel. Having been to 30 or so countries, and plenty of destinations among them, one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that happiness does   not come from beautiful destinations any more than the concept that money can buy happiness…

It’s easy to assume that if money can’t buy happiness, surely experiences can, but you can be in the most beautiful place on earth having some crazy experience, and not be happy. We tend to always be in search of the next big thing – the most beautiful beach or bigger mountain – without realizing that it is the journey there that matters, not the destination.

Happiness is hard to define of course, but I think happiness lies in your outlook and present state of mind. To be happy is to be in the present moment, no matter what you own or where you are.

travel not to escape life

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

23. “What gives value to travel is fear. It breaks down a kind of inner structure we all have.” – Elizabeth Benedict

24. “we must go beyond textbooks, go out into the bypaths and untrodden depths of the wilderness and travel and explore and tell the world the glories of our journey.” – john hope franklin, 25. “though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us, or we find it not.” – ralph waldo emerson.

Walking on the globe with your head down will never open up all views and beautiful things to see. In order to enjoy traveling, you have to keep your mind and heart open, accept different cultures and traditions and simply try to adapt. Keep a positive mindset and you’ll see the beauty of the world.

26. “Real traveling is not about visiting places but about ‘re-visiting’ our inner-self.” – Sorrab Singha

Travel Quote 6

27. “Travel not to find yourself, but to remember who you’ve been all along.” – Unknown

Both of these travel quotes (#26 and #27) encapsulate that sometimes we travel to learn more about ourselves. A large aspect of traveling is, of course, visiting places, but sometimes you end up visiting parts of yourself too.

28. “Travelling expands the mind rarely.” – Hans Christian Andersen

29. “traveling outgrows its motives. it soon proves sufficient in itself. you think you are making a trip, but soon it is making you – or unmaking you.” – nicolas bouvier, 30. it is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” – ursula k. le guin, 31. “the best journeys are the ones that answer questions that at the outset you never even thought to ask.” – rick ridgeway.

Travel Quote 9

32. “You thought too hard. Same with travel. You can’t work too much at it, or it feels like work. You have to surrender yourself to the chaos. To the accidents.” –   Gayle Forman

This is one of my favorite travel quotes! It reminds me of something I read in the book  Shantaram , about an ex-convict on the run and his adventures in India. In the book, he was given similar advice: to surrender to India and accept his experience for what it was.

You have to surrender to the chaos and enjoy/endure the experiences as they come. While this is applicable to many aspects of life, it is definitely applicable to travel. You can’t try to force itineraries and plans or work hard to fulfill some high expectations in your mind. Doing so will only tire and disappoint you.

Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

33. “Traveling is like flirting with life. It’s like saying, ‘I would stay and love you, but I have to go; this is my station.”  – Lisa St. Aubin de Teran

34. “travel has a way of making the world a much smaller place.” – janna graber, 35. “life is a journey that must be traveled no matter how bad the roads and accommodations.” –   oliver goldsmith, 36. “focus on the journey, not the destination. joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” – greg anderson.

Travel Quote 7

37. “Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection.” – Lawrence Durrell

I can relate to this quote about travel quite well actually. The longer and more that I travel, the more I find myself self-analyzing and observing my own thought and emotional processes.

Traveling has a funny way of throwing you out into the world with the intention of discovering more about everything around you, only to realize you will discover far more about yourself. It is why traveling can be the most rewarding form of introspection.

38. “You develop a sympathy for all human beings when you travel a lot.” – Shakuntala Devi

39. “once you have traveled, the voyage never ends but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. the mind can never break off from the journey.” – pat conroy, 40. “travel and change of place impart new vigour to the mind.” – seneca, 41. “a man practices the art of adventure when he breaks the chain of routine and renews his life through reading new books, traveling to new places, making new friends, taking up new hobbies and adopting new viewpoints.” – wilfred peterson.

Travel Quote 8

42. “It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.” – Ernest Hemingway

I can relate to these words quite a bit as I try to find the balance between preparing and planning for the future, reaching goals, and just enjoying the ride and staying present in the moment.

Having goals and an endpoint in sight is good; however, I don’t think it will be as satisfying if you don’t enjoy the moments that take you there. If you only focus on the destination you’ll miss everything that matters – the journey along the way.

43. “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware.” – Martin Buber

44. “life is a magical journey, so travel endlessly to unfold its profound and heart touching beauty.” – debasish mridha, 45. “good company in a journey makes the way seem shorter.”- izaak walton.

Whether it’s long, annoying bus trips, a shabby hostel or simply somewhere you don’t necessarily feel comfortable, it’s always better to have great company by your side. Going through the rough times together makes the whole experience more endurable.

46. “The pleasure we derive from journeys is perhaps dependent more on the mindset with which we travel than on the destination we travel to.” – Alain de Botton

Travel Quote 10

47. “With age, comes wisdom. With travel, comes understanding.” – Sandra Lake

I love this quote about traveling. With age, comes wisdom. Wisdom isn’t something you can read about, it is something you learn through experience. The same goes for travel. You can read and hear about places and people that are different than you, but sometimes it takes experiencing those places and meeting those people for yourself to truly understand them.

48. “Travel teaches toleration.” – Benjamin Disraeli

49. “travel opens your mind as few other things do. it is its own form of hypnotism, and i am forever under its spell.” – libya bray, 50. “half of the fun of travel is the aesthetic of lostness.” – ray bradbury, 51. “travel, in the younger sort, is a part of education; in the elder, a part of the experience.” – francis bacon.

Travel Quote 11

52. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s OK. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain

Anthony Bourdain will always be remembered for his adventurous spirit and ability to share some of the most remote and fascinating corners of this planet with the rest of the world. His words ring true. Travel is not pretty, and it’s definitely not always comfortable.

Sometimes you’ll deal with awful buses and missed flights, sleep in strange places, be confronted with challenging and stressful situations, or encounter experiences that break your heart. But that’s okay because the journey will make you stronger, and ultimately make you a better person.

53. “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” – Gustav Flaubert

54. “it is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. such are the melancholies du voyage: perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about traveling.” – gustave flaubert, 55. “all travel has its advantages. if the passenger visits better countries, he may learn to improve his own. and if fortune carries him to worse, he may learn to enjoy it.” – samuel johnson, 56. “uncertainty and anticipation are the joys of travel.” –  ken hundert.

Travel Quote 14

57. “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.” –  Dalai Lama

58. “investment in travel is an investment in yourself.” – matthew karsten.

Rather than investing in the latest technology, do yourself the favor and take yourself on a little trip. Clear your mind, learn new things and experience different cultures and people. You won’t regret it!

59. “Traveling carries with it the curse of being at home everywhere and yet nowhere, for wherever one is, some part of oneself remains on another continent.” – Margot Fonteyn

60. “certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.” – miriam beard, 61. “culture is the tacit agreement to let the means of subsistence disappear behind the purpose of existence. civilization is the subordination of the latter to the former.” – karl kraus.

Travel Quote 12

62. “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

63. “travel expands the mind and fills the gap.” – sheda savage.

There are so many things to see and learn. The more you know, the more open your mindset and view will be. If you feel like you’re missing someone, invest in yourself and go on a trip to experience new things – you won’t regret it, we promise!

Travel Quote 15

67. “Travel is not really about leaving our homes, but leaving our habits.” – Pico Iyer

68. “when you’re traveling, you are what you are right there and then. people don’t have your past to hold against you. no yesterdays on the road.” – william least heat moon, 69. “i soon realized that no journey carries one far unless, as it extends into the world around us, it goes an equal distance into the world within.” – lillian smith, 70. “for my part, i travel not to go anywhere but to go. i travel for travel’s sake. the great affair is to move.” – robert louis stevenson, 71. “conventional wisdom tells us… we take our baggage with us. i’m not so sure. travel, at its best, transforms us in ways that aren’t always apparent until we’re back home. sometimes we do leave our baggage behind, or, even better, it’s misrouted to cleveland and is never heard from again.” – eric weiner.

Travel Quote 16

72.  “The journey is part of the experience – an expression of the seriousness of one’s intent. One doesn’t take the A train to Mecca.” – Anthony Bourdain

73. “travel is like love, mostly because it’s a heightened state of awareness, in which we are mindful, receptive, undimmed by familiarity and ready to be transformed. that is why the best trips, like the best love affairs, never really end.” – pico iyer, 74. “to my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travel is to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar it is taken for granted.” – bill bryson, 75. “perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – maya angelou, 76. “travel does what good novelists also do to the life of every day, placing it like a picture in a frame or a gem in its setting, so that the intrinsic qualities are made more clear. travel does this with the very stuff that everyday life is made of, giving to it the sharp contour and meaning of art.” – freya stark.

Travel Quote 17

77. “The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home.” – Freya Stark

78. “you will, if you’re wise and know the art of travel, let yourself go on the stream of the unknown and accept whatever comes in the spirit in which the gods may offer it.” – freya stark, 79. “when you travel, remember that a foreign country is not designed to make you comfortable. it is designed to make its own people comfortable.” – clifton fadiman.

This another one of the most important travel quotes, especially in nowadays time. When traveling, always keep your mind open, be respectful towards other people and try new things. Just because your believes, expectations and values work for you, doesn’t mean that it works for others too. Watch, experience and keep the critical thoughts to yourself if you don’t want to make enemies in a different country.

Travel Quotes by Famous People

Favorite travel quotes.

Inspiring travel quotes have certainly ignited our spirit of exploration and captured the essence of why we travel. For example,

  • “A journey is best measured in friends, not in miles,” Tim Cahill reminds us that experiences and connections matter more than distances traveled.
  • Another stirring quote is “Life is short, and the world is wide,” attributed to Simon Raven. It emphasizes our limited time to explore a vast world.
  • The wisdom in St. Augustine’s words, “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page,” encourages us to broaden our horizons through travel.
  • John Steinbeck’s famous saying, “People don’t take trips, trips take people,” reflects the transformative power of travel.
  • “Travel far, pay no fare… a book can take you anywhere,” by Anne Morrow Lindbergh, suggests that even in the absence of physical travel, we can journey through the pages of a good book.
  • “ A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving ” ~ Lao Tzu

Each of these travel quotes offers a unique perspective on the enriching experiences travel brings to life.

Feel free to pin, use as Instagram captions, download, and print these best travel quotes to put up these best travel quotes around your house for inspiration!

1. “The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” ~ Saint Augustine

travel quotes The World is a book and those who do not travel read only one page by Saint Augustine

Let’s kick our list off with some of the more famous travel quotes by famous people. We’ll get to the more obscure as we go down the list.

This is definitely one of the best travel quotes of all time, but it certainly reads true. One of our favorite travel quotes is “The World is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.

When you travel, the whole world opens up. Travel has helped us to understand the meaning of life and it has helped us become better people. Each time we travel, we see the world with new eyes. Just like reading a book, when you travel, you experience more than only one page of life. Make your life a novel, not a page.

2. “Not all those who wander are lost” ~ J.R.R. Tolkien

travel not to escape life

This is one of our favorite travel quotes because it gets us. Throughout our lives, people have thought that because we keep traveling and searching for new things to do, we are not focused.

They have often thought we were flaky or unfocused. But travel helped us find our purpose and put focus into our lives. The more we got lost in our travels, the richer our lives became.

Seriously people, not all those who wander are lost. That’s a statement and a quote.

So when you think that the travelers in your life are flighty, remember, “not all who wander are lost “

3. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all” ~ Helen Keller

adventure travel quotes by Helen Keller - Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all

If Helen Keller can see life as a great adventure, what excuse do the rest of us have? Take a chance and live life to the fullest. When we are at our most daring, we feel the most fulfillment.

When we think of this travel quote, we live by it. Adventure is different for everyone, but we try to treat each day by doing something daring and adventurous; it keeps things exciting.

I wonder what she would think now, knowing that she is quoted as having one of the most popular travel quotes in the world.

4. “Take only memories, leave only footprints” ~ Chief Seattle

Famous travel Quotes - Take only memories leave only footprints by Chief Seattle

Chief Seattle had many inspiring quotes, but this is probably the most famous of all travel quotes, it is also a motto everyone should live by in life.

We need to give back to this world. People often feel they can take home a trophy, sneak a piece of stone from a historic site , or take something from nature.

Travel isn’t about taking, it is about absorbing the beauty of the world. So remember, sometimes only memories are all you need. They are your only private moments to enjoy. So try to take only memories.

5. “Travel is  fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.” ~ Mark Twain

Mark twain traveling Quotes

Travel opens our minds and heart and makes us better people—one of our favorite travel quotes by Mark Twain.

6. ” The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” ~ Marcel Proust

best travel quotes by marcel proust

When thinking about travel quotes, we often look to the most popular ones, but these quotes really make me think. Sure, we can set sail to different lands, but until you change your mindset, you’ll never really immerse yourself in a voyage of discovery.

7. “Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” ~ Gustave Flaubert

Travel quotes and inspiration by Gustave Flaubert

Traveling quotes often mention the fact of how travel makes you humble and how life experiences are more important than accumulating things.

8. “Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do” ~ H. Jackson Brown Jr.

This doesn’t necessarily need to be related to travel quotes it can work for life quotes too. It can be scary to try something new, take a chance, and step out of your comfort zone. But when looking back on life, it’s the chances you didn’t take that you’ll regret.

9. Never go on trips with anyone you do not love.” ~ Hemmingway

quotes about travel - Be inspired by this list of the most inspiring quotes of all time

As a travel couple, this is one of those travel quotes that is close to our hearts. We love traveling together and couldn’t imagine doing it alone.

10. “Like all great travellers, I have seen more than I remember and remember more than I have seen.” ~ Benjamin Disraeli

Benjamin Disraeli Inspirational quotes about travel

This is one of those travel quotes that sum up a traveler perfectly. Over the years, our memories of our travels change and our stories become larger than life. Not only do we forget the bad and remember only the good, but the senses stick with us.

11. “Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

best travel quotes Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

Before we started traveling in 2000, I only dreamed of writing for a living. But after our travels, I was so moved by many of our experiences I started writing stories to my friends and family.

When we first set off to begin our travel blog, a friend shared the works and travel quotes of Ibn Battuta with me it was through these early recommendations inspired me to become a storyteller.

No best travel quotes list would be complete without adventure quotes. Travel is an adventure and they go hand in hand. These are some of our favorite quotes about the adventure that we’ve collected over the years.

12. “If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine, it’s lethal” ~ Paul Coelho

Adventure travel quotes by Paul Coelho

Travel quotes about adventure are our favorite because we are always pushing our boundaries and when we’re feeling a little afraid or lazy, we always think of this quote. Plus, I like this much better than his other quote: “Travel is never a matter of money but of courage.”

13. “Great things never came from comfort zones.” ~ Anonymous

Traveling Quotes about Adventure

It’s true! Of all the travel quotes in this list, I really feel that this one rings true to life. Even if you are not traveling, you need to step out of your comfort zone.

Whether you’re taking on a new project, opening a business, or enrolling in a course, when you do something that scares you a little, you can do something great.

14. “If you are always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.” ~ Maya Angelou

Famous Quotes about travel by Maya Angelou

When looking for travel quotes about adventure travel, this one really stuck out by Maya Angelou. It wasn’t until we started to live a life less ordinary that we understood how much control we had over our lives and just how amazing we could make it.

15. “Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the journey” ~ Babs Hoffman

Babas Hoffman Inspirational travel quotes

This doesn’t have to a quote on travel alone. Life itself has a lot of potholes. Whether you are traveling or at home working at your job, you should definitely enjoy the journey.

16. “Fear is only temporary. Regrets last forever.”

best travel quotes for motivation | fear is only temporary, regrets last forever

Are you wanting to travel the world but are afraid to take the next step? The travel quote above says it all. Fear is only temporary , but if you don’t follow your dream, you may regret it forever.

We are not saying to follow travel quotes like this blindly. Don’t put yourself in dangerous situations, but don’t let being afraid of the unknown consume you either.

17. “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

Best Quotes About Traveling life begins at the end of your comfort zone

This is one of my favorite travel quotes on adventure travel. It’s scary to step out of your comfort zone, but if you do so with proper training and guidance, a whole new life will begin!

18. “Travel doesn’t become adventure until you leave yourself behind”

Well to me this quote means you have to leave your burdens, your stress, and your preconceived notions behind. To understand travel, you must be open to new possibilities and it will change your life.

19. “Climb the mountain so you can see the world, not so the world can see you. ~ David McCullough

Traveling Quote by David McCullough

This is one of those quotes about travel that has never rung truer than in today’s society. Everyone is traveling to show off and brag or catch a selfie rather than to have an experience. But its the experience that you’ll remember, not the social share.

20. “Jobs fill your pocket but adventures fill your soul.” ~ Jamie Lyn Beatty

It’s true, we all have to do our job and have our careers. And that is important we need to make money to be able to live. But it is also important to take time to smell the roses and let go of work when you are not in the office.

We have always looked at our lives this way, jobs fill your pocket so that you can spend your down time having a great adventure. Be it travel or at home, life begins outside the office.

I love funny travel quotes. Sometimes when we get stressed out or frustrated with travel, we need to sit back and laugh about the little things.

21. “Don’t worry about the world ending today, it’s already tomorrow in Australia.” ~ Charles M. Schulz

funny quotes charles m schulz

We all have worries every day and more than ever the state of the world is in question. But travel makes you forget your troubles and Charles Schulz couldn’t have said it better. It’s the funniest of travel quotes.

22. “I have found out that there ain’t no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate people than to travel with them.” ~ Mark Twain

We have always given the advice that if you want to test to see if you are compatible in your relationship, go and travel together for a while.

Mark Twain could not be more correct. If you can travel with someone you’ll be friends for life! So put these travel quotes to the test and travel with someone right now!

23.  “A Journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you can control it. ” ~ John Steinbeck

be inspired by theses funny traveling quotes | john steinbeck

When traveling, things are often out of our control and we have found that it is better to relax and let go. And that is true for our marriage as well. We can’t always be in control and that is half the fun!

24. “Drink Heavily with locals whenever possible.” ~ Anthony Bourdain

antony bordain travel quote | drink heavily

This is a rather funny travel quote by Anthony Bourdain, but it is also very true. Some of our best travel experiences have been when having a few drinks with the locals.

So when we are out late at night, we look to these types of travel quotes for justification. hah!

25. “I told the doctor I broke my leg in two places. He told me to quit going to those places” ~ Henny Youngman

quotes about travel | funny travel quotes

This quote reminds me of my dad. He’s always telling silly jokes like this and I love it!

26. “There is nothing safer than flying, it’s the crashing that’s dangerous.” ~ Theo Cowa

For those of you who are afraid to fly, I am afraid that you are not going to find the humor in this travel quote, but I find it quite cheeky.

27. “I always like to go to Washington D.C. It gives me a chance to visit my money.” ~ Bob Hope

bob hope funny travel quote

This one made me chuckle because we were just in Ottawa (Canada’s National Capital) and we made a point of saying “ Now we know where our taxes go, look at all the beautiful museums and buildings in this city! ”

And even though Bob Hope was talking about his home country of the USA, it certainly rings true anywhere. So, we put it in our best travel quotes list, because everyone can relate!

28. “Jet Lag is for Amateurs.” ~ Dick Clark

best travel quote | jet lag is for amateurs

While I think it’s a funny travel quote, I tend to disagree with Dick Clark. It seems that the more I travel, the worse jet lag gets. But then I suck it up and think of him and then I say “Deal with it Deb, Jet Lag is for amateurs.” See, travel quotes can be motivating!

29. “Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.” ~ Paul Theroux

Travel is glamorous only in retrospect by Paul Theroux

I love this travel quote so much because it is very true. When we come home from our travels, we always forget the tough times and difficult experiences.

We only remember the beautiful things about our travels and the bad stuff fades away. But let me tell you, we’ve had some very unglamorous travels in our lives.

30. “I wish I had never gone traveling.” Said no one ever.

travel quotes | I wish I had never gone traveling said no one ever

I don’t know who said this travel quote, but it is straightforward and to the point. If you are looking for travel quotes that capture the feeling of travel, this is it!

Inspirational Quotes About Travel

Inspirational travel quotes can be life-changing. I used to have quotes taped all over my house and now that we have moved into a house again, I’m collecting inspiring quotes about life and adventure. Words have meaning and can change mindsets.

31. “Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” ~Andre Gide

Inspirational Travel Quote by Andre Gide Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.

I am going to update this quote though and say Woman and Man Cannot discover new oceans until they lose sight of the shore.

When Dave and I first started our careers in travel, we kept one toe in our careers and one toe in travel. It wasn’t until we finally let go of our safe life in the film industry and took a chance to go all into our new adventure travel careers that everything changed.

32. “It’s Better to Travel Well than to Arrive” ~ Buddha

33. “it is not the destination where you end up but the mishaps and memories you create along the way.” ~ penelope riley.

Best Traveli quotes- It is not the destination where you end up but the mishaps and memories you create along the way bu Penelope Riley

We all make mistakes in life and travel. Travel quotes can be relatable in life as well. And it really is the mishaps and adventures you have along the road of life and travel that make for everlasting memories.

34. “The important thing is to never stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing” ~ Albert Einstein

35. “travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”.

Traveling Wisdom through quotes.

Okay so maybe it isn’t exactly the truest of travel quotes because if you buy a house, it may grow in value and if you buy stocks, you may get lucky and hit the jackpot, but you can never go wrong with travel.

But travel brings riches in life with experiences, learning, and making new friends.

36. “I would rather own a little and see the world than own the world and see a little of it.” ~ Alexander Sattler

Best Travel Quotes see the world

37.  “It is better to see something once than to hear about it a thousand times.”

best quotes about traveling | it's better to see something once than to hear it a thousand times

When we saw the Taj Mahal for the first time, we had heard about it many times. We had read about it and people had told us all about it. But it wasn’t until we saw it that we really understand its beauty and meaning.

38. Wherever you go becomes a part of you somehow

We agree with this travel quote indeed. Travel changes a person and it is because of the people you meet and the experiences you have. It is true that you take a piece of a place home with you.

39. “When was the last time you did something for the first time.” ~ Anonymous

We have found that travel gives us the courage to try new things. When we are home in our routine, we become comfortable. But when we travel, we are inspired by others and inspired by the destination.

40. “Someday I’m going to be free and I’m going to travel the world.”

inspirational quote for travel | Someday I'm going to be free and I'm going to travel the world

Before we started traveling full time we felt trapped. When we started putting our minds to living a life of travel, we felt the barriers break and soon we were living our dream. This quote is very close to our hearts.

41. “You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will be as one.” ~ John Lennon

best travel quotes john lennon imagine

Travel brings people together. It helps people understand other cultures and religions. What we think we know about other places is thrown out the window, once we land on their soil.

So get out there, meet other people and you’ll soon see that people around the world are just like you and me.

Short Travel Quotes Captions

43. “We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us.”

The Road less Travelled travel Quotes We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us

Many people think traveling quotes are all about people escaping and dreaming. But to us, this quote captures exactly the essence of travel. We never traveled to escape life, we always traveled to find ourselves.

Travel the World travel Quotes

Travel quotes that are Inspirational

Perhaps people tell you not to go to a place because they think it is awful when it is really beautiful. Or perhaps someone constantly tells you how wonderful a destination is.

Go and see for yourself and make up your own mind. That’s what this says to me.

46. “Don’t Quit Your Day Dream”

Travel quotes | Be inspired by this list of the most inspiring quotes of all time

One of my favorite quotes about wanderlust. One of the things Dave and I are most thankful for is the fact that we never stopped dreaming.

If we settled (like we were supposed to in life) we’d still be working at our jobs thinking we weren’t allowed to have dreams once we reached a certain age. Never stop dreaming.

47. “I don’t know where I’m going, but I’m on my way”

Travel quotes | Be inspired by this list of the most inspiring quotes of all time

48. “Oh, the places you’ll go.” ~ Dr Seuss

50. “life’s a journey, not a destination” ~aerosmith.

traveling quotes | lifes a journey not a destination

Okay so maybe Ralph Waldo Emerson deserves the credit for Life is a journey, not a destination, but we heard it first through Aerosmith, so I’m giving it to Aerosmith. Because I couldn’t find the proof anyway.

I’ll never forget being in Vietnam in 2003 and while sitting in a bar, they encouraged travelers to write their favorite quotes on its wall.

What did Dave choose? Life’s a journey, not a destination naturally. We have always lived by this motto and of course adventure is for everyone.

Fantastic collection of travel quotes! Every single word goes well with the picture they’re pasted over. It is tough to say which one is the best travel quote.

Hi Dave and Deb,

I absolutely loved your article about the ultimate travel quotes! As someone who is always on the lookout for inspiration to travel, reading through these quotes made me feel excited and motivated to plan my next adventure. I especially loved the quote by Ibn Battuta that says “Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” It perfectly captures the transformative power of travel and how it can change us in so many positive ways.

Overall, your article was beautifully written and showcased a diverse range of travel quotes that were both inspiring and thought-provoking.

Who said so?

Great Words

Wonderful collection

I was hoping the pandemic will end up so I can free travel again for adventure. Thanks a lot for sharing your collection qoutes.

Thanks for the travel quotes. I’m going to save some and print them out. My favorite is like a lot of people here. Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all. This year has proven that. We can’t sit around all day and be happy. Let’s make it an adventure.

My choices for the best travel quotes are: Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all Travel makes one modest you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world. The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page

Great travel quotes, although I don’t get this one… The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Does travel give you new eyes or do you have to have your eyes open before traveling? Hmm, things to think about.

These really are inspirational travel quotes. I love this one by Anthony Bourdain. “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”

These are the best travel quotes I’ve seen! What a list! And thank you for the pictures. This phrase “Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” Really puts it all into perspective. When you travel (really travel, not as a tourist) you understand that you are not the center of the universe. And I agree travel really does make you richer. Thanks

Wow! What a list of inspirational travel quotes. I’m going to print these off to get motivated and start saving for travels. Here’s to traveling the world! My favourites are Life is either a daring adventure or nothing at all Travel makes one modest, you see what a tiny place you occupy in the world Man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore But I agree with you, it should be “people”

Thanks for the inspiration with these travel quotes. I am looking forward to traveling again!

Amazing list of travel quotes!! Truly inspiring. Keep up the great work!!

Those are amazing travel quotes, thanks for sharing! My favourite is “Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before” by the Dalai Lama. May I share your picture of it on my social media? Of course, I’d mention that it belongs to you. Thanks and have a great day?

These are beautiful words to live by. Experience life and adventure.

Loved it: “KEEP YOUR FACE ALWAYS TOWARD THE SUNSHINE – AND SHADOWS WILL FALL BEHIND YOU.”

Congrats on the article and keep it updated! Love the one of: “Travel…the best way to be lost and found at the same time.” Travel is a mix of feeling with sometimes the fear of get lose but feeling free at the same time.

JACKSON BROWN JR

Those are fantastic! My favourite is “I HAVE FOUND OUT THAT THERE AIN’T NO SURER WAY TO FIND OUT WHETHER YOU LIKE PEOPLE OR HATE THEM THAN TO TRAVEL WITH THEM.” ~ MARK TWAIN” We have found this out first hand in our travels and there is no truer travel quote 😀

Didn’t see this one above but it’s one of my favorites and from a very well traveled Nat Geo photographer:

“Ibn Battuta never dwells on what drove him on.

Curiosity? Perhaps . . . More likely it was a quest for knowledge.

One never seduced by a foreign culture cannot appreciate the fetters of his own. Life, after all, is a journey – a voyage of discovery.

Why not take the high road?”

Thomas Abercrombie, National Geographic

Thanks for sharing, that’s a great message. I love finding new words of wisdom.

travel makes your mind opened wider than before dudes. so, let’s go to explore

31 Mark Twain Quotes About Travel and the World As He Saw It

Samuel Clemens traveled extensively and experienced countless cultures. Let his wisdom inspire you to see the world.

travel not to escape life

Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, was one of the leading travelers of the 19th century. His extensive time spent abroad allowed Twain to become renowned as a travel writer, While Twain might be best remembered for his novels, his words, in some ways, transcend time. (Even if his use of "shall" dates him.)

Though he penned some of his best work from the 1870s to 1890s, his humor, insight, and vast cultural knowledge are still applicable today. Mark Twain's quotes on travel will excite and inspire you, while still bringing you back to reality.

Whether there's a quote on the tip of your tongue or you’re looking for profound thoughts on experiencing the world, the following selected quotes are just that. Browse some of Twain's most famous quotes, all verified by the Center for Mark Twain Studies .

Mark Twain Quotes on Travel

“It liberates the vandal to travel — you never saw a bigoted, opinionated, stubborn, narrow-minded, self-conceited, almighty mean man in your life but he had stuck in one place since he was born and thought God made the world and dyspepsia and bile for his especial comfort and satisfaction.”

“There is no unhappiness like the misery of sighting land (and work) again after a cheerful, careless voyage.”

“Take the universe as a whole, and it is a very clever conception and quite competently carried out, but I don’t think much of this globe as a work of art. It would have been better to take more time to it and do it right, it seems to me, than to rush it through, helter-skelter, in six days, just for reputation.”

“It is a subject that is bound to stir the pulses of any man one talks seriously to about, for in this age of inventive wonders all men have come to believe that in some genius' brain sleeps the solution of the grand problem of aerial navigation — and along with that belief is the hope that that genius will reveal his miracle before they die, and likewise a dread that he will poke off somewhere and die himself before he finds out that he has such a wonder lying dormant in his brain.”

Famous Quotes From Mark Twain’s Books

“In our day we don't allow a hundred and thirty years to elapse between glimpses of a marvel. If somebody should discover a creek in the county next to the one that the North Pole is in, Europe and America would start fifteen costly expeditions thither; one to explore the creek, and the other fourteen to hunt for each other.” — "Life on the Mississippi," 1883

"To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment." — "Innocents Abroad," 1869

"Consider well the proportion of things. It is better to be a young June-bug than an old bird of paradise." — “Pudd'nhead Wilson,” 1894

"One gets large impressions in boyhood, sometimes, which he has to fight against all his life." — "Innocents Abroad," 1869

"The elastic heart of youth cannot be compressed into one constrained shape long at a time." — "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," 1876

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.” — "Innocents Abroad," 1869

"It is curious — the space-annihilating power of thought." — "Following the Equator,” 1897

“Be good and you will be lonesome.” ― “Following the Equator,” 1897

"Now and then we had a hope that if we lived and were good, God would permit us to be pirates." — "Life on the Mississippi," 1883

“I have found out there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.” — "Tom Sawyer Abroad," 1894

Mark Twain Quotes on Courage

Andrii Lutsyk/Ascent Xmedia/Getty Images

“With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity.”

“It is curious — curious that physical courage should be so common in the world, and moral courage so rare.”

“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear — not absence of fear. Except a creature be part coward, it is not a compliment to say he is brave; it is merely a loose misapplication of the word.”

Mark Twain Quotes About Life

“It is noble to teach oneself, but still nobler to teach others — and less trouble.”

“Education consists mainly in what we have unlearned.”

“Everything has its limit — iron ore cannot be educated into gold.”

“What is the most rigorous law of our being? Growth.”

“I was seldom able to see an opportunity until it had ceased to be one.”

Funny Mark Twain Quotes

“Never refuse to do a kindness unless the act would work great injury to yourself, and never refuse to take a drink — under any circumstances.”

“Humor, to be comprehensible to anybody, must be built upon a foundation with which he is familiar. If he can't see the foundation the superstructure is to him merely a freak — like the Flatiron building without any visible means of support — something that ought to be arrested.”

“When your watch gets out of order you have a choice of two things to do: throw it in the fire or take it to the watch-tinker. The former is the quickest.”

“The funniest things are the forbidden.”

“Laughter without a tinge of philosophy is but a sneeze of humor. Genuine humor is replete with wisdom.”

“The only very marked difference between the average civilized man and the average savage is that the one is gilded and the other is painted.”

“Of course, no man is entirely in his right mind at any time.”

“When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained.”

“There are no people who are quite so vulgar as the over-refined.”

I have never heard the quote, but it makes a lot of sense. Good for you to get out and explore! To me these adventures are way more valuable than fancy clothes or other “stuff”.

Oh, I so agree with you! I love to travel. The quote is so perfect! Keep traveling and keep saving for that special 2023 get-away!

I can appreciate the quote but don’t do much traveling. Of course, anything is possible!

You make very good points and I agree with you. Travel broadens our lives. I do enjoy travelling but I hate the planning and getting ready. Once I’m on the plane/car/boat/whatever I am ok. And I’ve been travelling since I was 6 years old when I left my home country of China. Sometimes I have to remind myself that when I feel like a stick in the mud. I had an experience, too going to Paris a few years ago. I had to buy 3 sets of tickets. It’s a long story but we got reimbursed.

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

Life is an adventure. Live it. To live is to laugh as if you’ve never known pain. To live is to love as if you’ve never been hurt. To live is to explore the world as if it’s your birthright to do so. When I say “adventure” I don’t focus purely on the adrenaline highs of extraordinary physical activities or wanderings into the unknown (though I may mean exactly that).  For me, adventure is living and breathing perfect awareness of the endless possibilities of your existence (creativity and imagination).  It also means “exploring life’s possibilities with no stone unturned”.

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

Here are 20 travel quotes that inspired me to climb mountains, explore islands, and get out of the box ( a corporate office job ) whenever I can. These are some of the reasons why I seek the Great Outdoors.

1.  “To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.” – James Thurber ( The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, movie)

I got bored while on a company-sponsored out-of-town vacation in Subic and managed to escape to the protected forest park of Camp Jest. In my beach shorts and cotton shirt, shoulder sling bag, and heeled rubber sandals I trekked approximately 6 hours back and forth in the depths of Ilanin forest with an Aeta guide and had the time of my life learning how to identify medicinal plants, how to extract shampoo from gugo barks and how to find them, how to build a fire and make bamboo cooking utensils using only a sharp bolo. We didn’t reach the waterfalls though, as we were all too slow in trekking and we need to go back to the starting point before dark.

What could have been a zombie moment for me- following the rest of the crowd mindlessly partaking of the hotel’s breakfast buffet- turned into an unexpected adventure and an unforgettable time of my life.  I bonded with office acquaintances that became my closest friends until now.  Despite blistered feet, sore legs, and shoulders, I knew there was no turning back; I will chase my own adventure moving forward.

2.  “It is only in adventure that some people succeed in knowing themselves – in finding themselves.” – Andre Gide

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

Get out of your comfort zone and know yourself more through travel. Nothing will enrich your mind, body, and soul the way traveling could.  Travelling will make you look inward and finally find that inner child. In rediscovering that inner child (creativity, resourcefulness, positivity, imagination, and self-assurance) comes a lightness of being that holds the keys to true happiness.

3. “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

The only way to make dreams come true is to stop dreaming and start doing. It all begins in a single step, and this applies not only to a physical journey but also to the general aspects of life. If you’re not used to traveling long distances but would really like to – then go out – take a short vacation out-of-town – then maybe next time you can go further to the nearest island you can cross over to explore. Then set your sights on finally exploring other places outside your country. (I have yet to do that, really. There are still too many places to explore on my side of the world. )

This is exactly the process I went through, and I got hooked on traveling ever since.

4. “I haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on my list.” – Susan Sontag

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

When I’m feeling down in the dumps I distract myself from the blues and start planning my next trip somewhere.  You see, if I haven’t been everywhere, then at least I have been somewhere, and everywhere is now achievable by a series of “somewheres” to go to.

5. “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm, and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.” – Jawaharial Nehru

For most of us, the 9 to 5 work lifestyle is inevitable. When was the last time you saw the beauty of the sunrise on an unobstructed skyline? When was the last time you stopped for a while on your own or with your loved one just to behold a magnificent sunset by the bay? Did you have the time to appreciate the best things that life has to offer without you working for it?

6. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”- Mark Twain

There are many things I could have done but remained unfinished business. The “what-ifs” of this life can bother me no end. So I took risks.  I made a lot of mistakes.  I had to start over several times. My point is- don’t live your life asking yourself a series of “what-ifs” hanging in the air of regret. I could have been a bitter woman who hated life in general. But no – I discovered hiking in the process. Hiking is the reason why, despite it all, I can still call life beautiful.

7. “Travel not to find yourself, but to remember who you’ve been all along.” – unknown

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

I found I’m happy when I’m trekking for hours just to visit hidden falls, lakes, and other wonders of nature. I found happiness scrambling up boulders and rocks to get to a mountain summit.  In the process, I discovered my limits, my capabilities, and my inner thoughts and aspirations long stilted by practicalities. In other words:  I rediscovered who I really am.  I have been that confident, self-assured inner child with a pollyanna sunshine attitude towards anything and everything even when drenched and soaking wet under the rain. Until I forgot I was a Polyana and nurtured negative thoughts about life. The law of attraction says you attract what you think. I began the journey inward and tried my best to nurture only the good things in life.

It doesn’t matter how difficult your journey is. What matters is the fulfillment that comes from reaching a destination and the journey itself.

8. Always do what you are afraid to do. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

As much as I hate to admit it but I’m afraid of water depths. Once I was “trying” to enjoy snorkeling at Apo Island near Dumaguete. I did enjoy ogling colorful marine life, not until I felt I couldn’t move in the strong current. I cried out of fear. I can only float myself to safety if the need arises but the phobia can just be paralyzing.  I tried to conquer this fear of water depths when I jumped from the top of Bolinao Falls –  without a life vest. Friends down below me assured me I’ll be safe with them around.  The experience was just another thrill for my adventurous friends, but for me, it was a milestone.  I could have just backed out and say it’s not worth the risk. I was silently proud of myself for conquering a lifetime of fear.

9. Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention to arrive safely in a pretty and well-preserved body; but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow! What a ride!’”-Hunter S. Thompson

Every time I come home from a long road trip or a strenuous multi-day hike, I would wake up in the morning with wound scratches here and there, sunburned skin, an aching body, and a limp. You’d think I looked like a mess but you know what? My daughter doesn’t think so. She thinks I glow every time I come home from a recent hike, all exhausted and spent. Before I lay my head to sleep in my comfy bed I know that an inner smile lingered remembering how I slept under the stars or shivering in the cold camping on a mountain, in a tent. Yes, that was quite an adventure, and all my heightened senses are telling me how good it is to be simply alive. I’ll probably do it again for as long as I can.

10. We travel not to escape life but for life not to escape us. – Unknown

When we were kids, we were just basking in the joys of “being” and I think all of us did at one point or another until we had to grow up. We had to live to work to make a living as responsible adults with a timeline of life tasks to tick off, and not simply work to live life. Work to live, not the other way around.   Take time to travel.

11. It is not down on any map, true places never are. – Herman Melville

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

I am enthralled with waterfalls. I chase them whenever I can. They’re often in enchanting fairy-tale settings in the woods except that it’s not a fairy-tale theater setting. It might be an enchanted place for real, or not. Either way, most of them cannot be found on maps. And those that are found in maps are often converted to resorts or tourist stops. True places are like these uncharted beauty spots. It could be a spot in a nearby garden. It could be your favorite rock or a campsite near a lake. That one true thing about these places is how you connected to the spirit of the place and that connection, can’t be labeled on a physical map.

12. To travel is to live. – Hans Christian Andersen

I am still grateful that I am living life in my own way every time I stand on a mountain peak, camp out in remote islands with nothing else but the most basic of camping gears and the natural beauty all around me. I could have worked all my life in an office focusing solely on how to survive- but fortunately, I didn’t. I climb mountains and go places every time I got the chance. Twenty years down the road I know these journeys are worthwhile stories to tell with a smile on my face.

13. “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” – Helen Keller

If a blind prodigy knew life is nothing but adventure and adventure is life itself, then we must be missing out on something if we have eyes that see but are blind to the beauty of life and this world we live in. Travel as often as you can. Live life, love life, chase your adventure.

14. A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles. – Tim Cahill

In each journey I make, I get to know new friends. Does it matter how many miles one has traveled? A journey’s a journey and cannot be anything but. But what makes journeys special are the friends you make along the way.

15. “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity”-John Muir

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

I believe that physical, emotional, and mental healing takes place the moment you step into the wilderness. Wide-open spaces with greenery calm the senses, alerts the mind, and increases awareness, and at the same time acts as a natural relaxant.  On a personal note, traveling and hiking are major stress buster when office demands are too high.

16. “The mountains are calling, and I must go. “– John Muir

There are moments all nature-lovers and trekkers have in common- moments when they just have to be hiking somewhere, and looking from the summit of a mountain somewhere. For some reason, I get these familiar longings to travel and hike up a particular mountain when the daily stress is creeping up on me and makes me say these infamous words by the most famous American mountaineer and naturalist – John Muir, and I say to myself: “ The mountains are calling, and I must go.” – often to a snicker from an eavesdropping daughter who heard me by chance. “You really have to go, Mom. You’re already talking to yourself.”

17. “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” – Henry David Thoreau

I got lost on my way several times. The good thing about being lost is how I managed to be more alert in finding the right path. My mind recalls the past routes I’ve taken up to the point of how I got lost in the first place. I tend to stop, think and ask for help if needed. Most of all, I learned to accept things I cannot change. There’s no use wasting time blaming yourself or anybody else. No amount of worrying and panicking can take me back to the right path.   I became more adaptable to change. With getting lost, I learned the true meaning of patience.

18.  “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”-Martin Buber

20 Travel Quotes That Inspire My Wanderlust

One word says it all – detours. I love the surprises that detours bring.

19. “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”  – Unknown

Travel can enrich your mind, body, and soul.  The experience lasts longer than any item purchased. Some of the friends you make along the way are like diamonds in the rough, they stand by you forever, and they shine better when buffed and polished with hard times.

In relation to what I just said about experiences, the last quote (#20) sums it all up for me:

20. “Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in an office or mowing your lawn. Climb that goddamn mountain.” – Jack Kerouac

This quote applies to anything you want to do in your life. Take that one step and tackle that one obstacle that always seems to block your way. Go ahead and climb your mountain – mountains always have gifts for those who dared to climb.

travel not to escape life

“We travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us”

We know the world is a very different place this year and it’s having a tremendous impact on all our lives.  As a traveler, you are already acutely aware of how connected we really are with people all around the world.  Travel helps us become a little less focused on the differences between us and we see firsthand our shared humanity.

In today’s challenging environment we can’t ignore that contact with others may spread a virus, but we do know that travel helps share love and ideas and solutions and understanding and it makes it possible for us to enjoy our world together.

We need each other.  We need our friends across the street and people we may never know on the other side of the world.  Travel bridges these gaps. We understand travel must wait for now, but we also know it is so critical to our lives that it will always be back.

I will admit, sometimes I do travel to escape things in my life (sometimes you just need to get away right?), but most of the time I travel to enrich my life. I love this quote and this sentiment because travel broadens our world views and exposes us to so much beauty that would have escaped us otherwise if we’d stayed home.

If you are digging this quote and image as much as I am, you can download it to look at all the time! There is a computer desktop version and a printable version if you want to hang it up in your house!

We travel not to escape life, but for life

Escapism, simply put is intentional detachment from the “real world” or one’s everyday life. most people practise it to divert from unpleasant & uninteresting aspects of their lives. commonly seen at the top of most people’s bucket list is excursion; otherwise known as travel – usually driven by the will of avoiding certain difficulties..

travel not to escape life

Such travellers believe that taking a break from their stressful lives will solve their issues, only to learn that their problems follow them around everywhere they go. Honestly ask yourself this – will the pictures you take on your vacation truly depict beatitude or they’ll just be other phony images to flaunt on Instagram & filter your reality?  Yes, it is every second person’s aspiration to book a ticket & hop on a plane & find themselves on a location other than their own every now and again but discovering the intention thereof is pivotal. Travelling is primarily meant to shift our headspace, repaint our headspace & ultimately expand our horizon. However, when approached in a negative light, its benefits can easily be missed & make the whole journey unfavourable.

In light of setting a travel intention – you’re not doing this just for the sake of it. This act can serve as a lens through which you view your trip ahead & sets a contour of your stay. In so doing, you’ll be able to make far better decisions about how you want to spend your time & achieve your travelling goal(s). It has been proven that the benefits of travelling are not just a temporary effect, visiting various places changes you psychologically. This is because when we do something different, especially in an unfamiliar place our brains become overly stimulated & encourages personal growth altogether. This may comprise: learning, self-discovery, forging new relations  & wallowing within the fun of adventure.

  • Most travellers are constantly in awe of the many life lessons they acquire during the period of their trips. Valuable lessons like the history & human race are equipped into their knowledge as they continually journey.
  • Self-discovery is one of the fundamental aspects of humankind. What better way than utilizing your trip to reach that spiritual fulfilment of knowing yourself. A flexy itinerary can offer you a sense of clarity, perspective & self-awareness.
  • The connections that are built during vacations in foreign countries can promote a global understanding of each other’s culture. Seemingly trivial things like food, music & language can strengthen a bond between two people from different countries. So these are the aspects that can be explored when interacting with others on your trip.
  • How can we forget the thrill of it all – adventure! Activities like climbing mountains, bungee jumping & the like can test the boundaries of our comfort domain, gauge our abilities, expose fears & offer us an opportunity to develop the lacking or weak parts.

All these points trace back to the unruffled fact that states: Travelling beyond your vicinity is crucial to gain exposure to the world at large.

With that being said, it is not your big suitcase that is of utmost importance when you’re on a quest of pilgrimaging to a different country, but an open mind that is readily available to soak in all the new experiences & teachings. As you travel & discover these newly found worlds, you’ll emerge as a well-rounded human being.

Forget the Fountain of Youth.

Tech titans, crypto bosses, AI researchers, investors, and so-called “immortalists” are showing support for “longevity escape velocity,” the controversial theory that people could live indefinitely by extending their remaining life expectancy faster than time passes.

“Now that doesn’t guarantee you living forever,” computer scientist and futurist Ray Kurzweil explained in March . “You could have a 10-year-old and you could compute that he’s got many, many decades of longevity, but he could die tomorrow.”

"Longevity escape velocity" is the controversial theory that people could live indefinitely by extending their remaining life expectancy faster than time passes.

Kurzweil, 76, argues that medical research — especially vaccine development — is progressing quick enough that you get back about four months of longevity a year. Technological advances — such as self-driving cars — will also help cut down on the number of accidents and deaths, he contends.

The former Google engineer predicts that by 2029, people will get back a full year of longevity.

“Past 2029, you’ll get back more than a year. Go backwards in time,” Kurzweil continued in his conversation with the venture capital and private equity firm Bessemer Venture Partners. “Once you can get back at least a year, you’ve reached longevity escape velocity.”

The term is not new , but it gained steam last year with the Dublin Longevity Declaration . As part of the pledge, leading longevity scientists called on world leaders to immediately expand research to improve health span and lifespan.

Dr. Aubrey de Grey, a biomedical gerontologist, speaks at the HT Leadership Summit 2015 on Dec. 5, 2015, in New Delhi, India.

“We wanted to put this out there because everyone knows aging is bad, everyone says it’s bad, but nobody does anything about it,” gerontologist Aubrey de Grey — president and chief science officer of the Longevity Escape Velocity Foundation, which aims to prevent age-related disease — said in an October statement.

“Like bad weather,” de Grey added, “people are stuck in the assumption that nothing can be done, even if we try. We wanted to put that assumption to rest.”

Life expectancy in the US has slowly started to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic. The overall US life expectancy at birth was 77.5 years in 2022 , a rise from 76.4 years in 2021.

Still, the increase wasn’t enough to overcome the loss of 2.4 years between 2019 and 2021.

Heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries and COVID-19 are the leading causes of death in the US .

It’s rare to see an American reach 110 years of age to become a supercentenarian. Houston woman Elizabeth Francis , 114, is the oldest living person in the US.

Never miss a story.

Dr. Thomas Perls — director and founder of the New England Centenarian Study, which explores the lifestyle and genetic factors that contribute to longevity — said the focus should be on battling age-related disorders like Alzheimer’s , not trying to live forever.

“We want to do what we can do to delay or even avoid aging-related diseases that may increase life expectancy or life span a little bit for people,” Perls told Insider last year .

“But in no way do I think that’s going to lead to the notion of living forever,” he added.

Gen X is fed up, so they're taking more vacations alone

  • Gen X is shifting from family trips to solo and friend-based vacations.
  • More than 60% of Gen Xers book vacations to escape daily stress, the highest of any generation.
  • Empty nests and upcoming retirements are influencing this trend.

Insider Today

With their children growing up and leaving the house, Gen Xers have a newfound freedom that is changing how and why they travel .

Gen X is booking fewer family trips and more vacations with friends or solo adventures, according to a report by Morning Consult published in May, which is based on monthly survey interviews with around 2,200 US adults from October 2021 to March 2024. Additionally, more than 60% of Gen Xers — who were born between 1965 and 1980 — cited the need to get away as their primary reason for booking a vacation, a higher percentage than any other generation.

"More than 6 in 10 Gen Xers say the desire to escape spurred their trip plans, perhaps reflecting the pressures of their current life stage," travel and hospitality analyst Lindsey Roeschke wrote in the Morning Consult report.

The percentage of Gen Xers planning trips with kids under 18 has dropped from 28% in October 2021 to 17% in February. The Morning Consult report noted that the drop is likely due to changing life circumstances, such as retirement or children moving out of the home.

According to data collected by the US Census Bureau , there were 22.5 million empty nesters in the US in 2014, the most recent year with available data. Another study published by the US Census Bureau in 2021 found that 60.2% of parents over the age of 55 did not have any children living at home, and those parents either lived alone or with a partner. However, neither of those studies differentiated between Gen Xers and baby boomers or how those numbers have changed over time.

Meanwhile, solo travel and trips with friends have increased and surpassed family vacations, signaling a move toward more personal and self-focused travel experiences.

Related stories

"Everyone likes to gloss over Gen Xers, but I'm really intrigued by the way their travel habits are shifting as they enter a new life stage," Roeschke wrote.

The next most common reason for Gen X to take a vacation was to visit family or friends, at slightly more than 40%.

Stress and empty nests may not be the only factors

Another factor influencing the level of travel sans families could be divorce. According to Morning Consult's data, the number of Gen Xers taking a vacation with a partner dropped from 36% in October 2021 to 46% in February 2024, the lowest rate in the three-year span examined.

The divorce rate for people aged 45 to 54 — Gen Xers are typically between the ages of 44 and 59 — rose from 13.1 per 1,000 people in 1990 to 15.8 in 2021, according to research conducted by Bowling Green State University and published in 2023. For people aged 55 to 64, the rate more than doubled from 5.1 to 10.6 per 1,000 people.

Financial pressures also play a significant role in shaping Gen X's travel habits. According to a Business Insider and YouGov survey of over 1,800 US adults in July, half of Gen Xers do not feel financially secure despite being in their peak earning years.

This financial strain influences travel decisions, leading travelers to seek deals and budget-friendly options, a trend that has been seen across all generations.

Driven by a need to escape and influenced by financial considerations, Gen Xers are carving out new travel experiences, prioritizing their well-being.

Are you ready for the raw, unfiltered truth about life on the road in your golden years? Forget those curated Instagram posts of # RVlife and dreamy sunsets. We’re going beyond the glitter and diving into the nitty-gritty realities that many retirees face when they ditch the sticks and bricks for a home on wheels.

The allure of RV living is undeniable. The freedom to travel, see new places, and escape harsh winters while meeting fellow adventurers sounds idyllic. However, life on the road comes with its own unique set of challenges that are often glossed over in those picture-perfect travel blogs.

So, buckle up and get ready for a dose of reality. We’re not here to discourage you from pursuing your RV dreams. Instead, we want to empower you with the knowledge needed to make an informed decision. This way, your retirement adventure will be a fulfilling journey, not a series of frustrating surprises.

<p>The initial charm of downsizing might give way to serious cabin fever. RVs, even larger ones, offer limited space. Sharing tight quarters long-term can strain even the strongest relationships.</p><p>Privacy becomes a luxury. If you value your alone time or need separate areas to work remotely, RV life could pose a serious challenge to your sanity.</p>

1. The Downsizing Dilemma

Trading a spacious house for a home on wheels means getting ruthlessly minimalist. Letting go of sentimental items, furniture that holds memories, and even beloved books is an emotional process that can be far harder than most expect.

It’s not just about the stuff, it’s about what it represents. Downsizing often forces us to confront attachments and memories, making for a sometimes painful emotional journey alongside the practical challenge of fitting your life into a significantly smaller space.

<p>That initial sense of freedom and novelty is intoxicating. The first few weeks on the road could be exhilarating, filled with new sights and experiences. However, this initial honeymoon phase often gives way to the realities of daily life in a confined space.</p><p>The novelty wears off. The close quarters, the constant packing and unpacking, and the challenges of finding reliable internet or cell service can quickly become frustrations. It’s essential to be realistic about the long-term challenges alongside the initial excitement.</p>

2. The “Honeymoon Phase” Ends Quickly

That initial sense of freedom and novelty is intoxicating. The first few weeks on the road could be exhilarating, filled with new sights and experiences. However, this initial honeymoon phase often gives way to the realities of daily life in a confined space.

The novelty wears off. The close quarters, the constant packing and unpacking, and the challenges of finding reliable internet or cell service can quickly become frustrations. It’s essential to be realistic about the long-term challenges alongside the initial excitement.

<p>Life on the go doesn’t always support healthy habits. Eating out constantly gets expensive and makes balanced meals tricky. Fitting in exercise when you spend long hours driving or are limited by campsite facilities can be a struggle.</p><p>Plus, healthcare for full-time RVers is complicated. Access can be limited, especially if your insurance is tied to your home state. This requires proper planning to avoid major roadblocks when medical needs arise.</p>

3. Maintenance Nightmares

RVs are notoriously finicky . Think of them as houses on wheels that are constantly jostled down the road. Things break, appliances malfunction, leaks spring up unexpectedly, and repairs often require specialized RV mechanics who aren’t always easy to find.

Being handy is a valuable skill for RVers. If DIY isn’t your forte, budgeting for repairs is crucial, as they can quickly add up and put a dent in your travel funds.

<p>The idea of an instant tribe of fellow RV enthusiasts is appealing. While some RVers form strong bonds, the reality is often fleeting interactions at campsites. It’s more akin to constantly having new neighbors than joining a tight-knit community.</p><p>If you’re looking for deep social connections or a strong sense of belonging, the nomadic lifestyle might prove surprisingly lonely.</p>

4. The Campground Catch-22

Peaceful campsites tucked away in nature might be your dream . The reality is often overcrowded RV parks with noisy neighbors and a distinct lack of privacy. Plus, costs add up quickly, especially if you stay in one place for a longer duration.

Finding the perfect balance between affordability and a serene environment is a constant juggling act. Boondocking (camping without hookups) is an option for the adventurous, but it requires being self-sufficient and mindful of waste disposal.

<p>Fueling up an RV is an exercise in sticker shock. They have terrible gas mileage (often 10 MPG or less). With rising gas prices, a long road trip can easily cost hundreds of dollars, making that “budget vacation” not so budget-friendly after all.</p><p>The environmental impact is also worth considering. Globetrotting in a gas-guzzling RV doesn’t exactly scream “eco-conscious.”</p>

5. Fueling the Beast: Gas Costs and Environmental Impact

Fueling up an RV can cause sticker shock, especially with today’s soaring gas prices. RVs are notorious gas guzzlers, with large vehicles averaging only 6-10 miles per gallon . A long road trip can easily cost hundreds of dollars, making that “budget vacation” not so budget-friendly after all.

Besides financial considerations, there’s the environmental impact to factor in. If sustainability is a priority, the carbon footprint of an RV lifestyle might give you serious pause. While some models are more fuel-efficient, most RVs’ sheer size and weight mean frequent trips to the pump are unavoidable.

<p>Picturesque RV park advertisements make it seem like you’ll always have nature at your doorstep. The reality? Often, you’re crammed into crowded campgrounds, neighbors mere feet away. It’s less Thoreau and more summer camp vibes – sometimes complete with noisy gatherings or running generators late into the night.</p><p>If solitude and tranquility are what you seek, campgrounds often lack the peace you imagine.</p>

6. Weather Woes: Extreme Temperatures and Unexpected Repairs

Most RVs aren’t built for extreme weather conditions. Intense heat can make life inside unbearable without a powerful air conditioner constantly running (hello, noise and energy costs!) while freezing temperatures can lead to frozen pipes and other costly repairs.

Unless you plan to chase mild weather year-round, be prepared for the challenges each season brings. This can mean shelling out for expensive RV parks with climate-controlled facilities or facing the discomfort and potential hazards of extreme heat or cold.

<p>How society views living in your car purely depends on whether you’re rich or poor. The rich living in their car is considered cool and unconventional, while a poor person living in their vehicle is desperate and tacky. These days, a mix of both live in their vans “down by the river.”</p>

7. The “Lonely Road” Syndrome

The idealized version of RV life often involves a happy couple exploring the country together, making new friends at every campground. While those connections happen, the reality is often more solitary . Many retirees travel alone, and the transient nature of RV life makes forming lasting friendships challenging.

It’s important to be honest with yourself about your social needs. If you thrive on a tight-knit community, the RV lifestyle might feel isolating. Seeking out RV groups with shared interests or activities can help combat loneliness.

<p>Stocking up on groceries in an RV requires strategic <a href="https://mountainhouse.com/blogs/rving/how-to-stock-your-campervan-kitchen">planning</a>. Limited fridge and pantry space means frequent trips to the store, which can be time-consuming and expensive, especially in remote areas where grocery options might be limited or overpriced.</p><p>Meal planning becomes essential. Look for recipes that utilize versatile ingredients you can use in multiple dishes. Non-perishable food items like canned goods and pasta can be lifesavers on longer trips, but it’s important to maintain a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables as well.</p>

8. The Grocery Gauntlet

Stocking up on groceries in an RV requires strategic planning . Limited fridge and pantry space means frequent trips to the store, which can be time-consuming and expensive, especially in remote areas where grocery options might be limited or overpriced.

Meal planning becomes essential. Look for recipes that utilize versatile ingredients you can use in multiple dishes. Non-perishable food items like canned goods and pasta can be lifesavers on longer trips, but it’s important to maintain a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables as well.

<p>Many retirees envision working remotely or staying connected with family and friends while on the road. However, this is easier said than done. Reliable internet and cell service are often spotty in rural areas, making it difficult to work, stream movies, or even make basic phone calls.</p><p>This can be a major dealbreaker for those who need consistent connectivity. Researching campsites with strong WiFi or investing in a cellular signal booster can help, but be prepared for the occasional frustrating technological hurdle.</p>

9. Unreliable Internet and Cell Service

Many retirees envision working remotely or staying connected with family and friends while on the road. However, this is easier said than done. Reliable internet and cell service are often spotty in rural areas, making it difficult to work, stream movies, or even make basic phone calls.

This can be a major dealbreaker for those who need consistent connectivity. Researching campsites with strong WiFi or investing in a cellular signal booster can help, but be prepared for the occasional frustrating technological hurdle.

<p>While many retirees enjoy good health, medical needs can arise unexpectedly. Finding a doctor or specialist in unfamiliar locations, dealing with out-of-network insurance issues, and accessing necessary medications can be a logistical nightmare.</p><p>It’s crucial to research healthcare options in your intended travel areas beforehand. If you have specific medical needs, consider establishing a <a class="wpil_keyword_link" href="https://www.newinterestingfacts.com/psychological-facts-about-relationships/" title="relationship">relationship</a> with a telemedicine provider for remote consultations and access to prescriptions while on the road.</p>

10. Medical Access on the Road

While many retirees enjoy good health, medical needs can arise unexpectedly. Finding a doctor or specialist in unfamiliar locations, dealing with out-of-network insurance issues, and accessing necessary medications can be a logistical nightmare.

It’s crucial to research healthcare options in your intended travel areas beforehand. If you have specific medical needs, consider establishing a relationship with a telemedicine provider for remote consultations and access to prescriptions while on the road.

<p>Laundry, dishes, and emptying holding tanks aren’t exactly the romantic travel adventures we’re usually sold. The mundane tasks of daily life don’t vanish on the road; they often become more complex.</p><p>Finding laundromats, conserving water, and dealing with sometimes less-than-hygienic public facilities are all part of the unglamorous side of RV life.</p>

11. The Learning Curve is STEEP

Driving a massive RV, operating its various systems, and figuring out how to live in a confined space all present challenges. Dumping tanks, managing water levels, and even just finding the right hookups at a campsite require learning new skills.

Don’t expect RV life to be a seamless transition. Be prepared for frustrations and setbacks, especially in the beginning. Research online forums, join RV clubs, and connect with other enthusiasts for advice and support as you navigate the learning curve.

<p>Like regular vehicles, RVs depreciate rapidly, especially in the first few years. That shiny new RV can become a money pit rather than an investment.</p><p>Unless you plan to live in the RV full-time for many years, you’ll likely lose a significant chunk of money when you eventually try to resell it.</p>

12. Security Concerns

While the RV community is generally friendly and welcoming, crime is an unfortunate reality in some areas. RVs, often parked in isolated campgrounds or rest stops, can be targets for theft , vandalism, or even break-ins. Investing in additional security measures like alarms, motion-sensor lights, and GPS tracking can help, but the vulnerability of being in a smaller, less secure dwelling is a real concern for some.

It’s also essential to be aware of your surroundings, trust your instincts, and avoid leaving valuables unattended in your RV. Researching safe routes and destinations and being cautious about where you park can further minimize your risk.

<p>RVs aren’t just a mode of transportation; they are your shelter. This adds a layer of vulnerability. Breakdowns in isolated areas can quickly turn into dangerous situations. Safety precautions and emergency preparedness become even more crucial than on a regular road trip.</p><p>Security is also a concern. Unfortunately, RV theft and occasional break-ins do happen, especially if you’re traveling solo. Understanding these risks and how to mitigate them is non-negotiable.</p>

14 Reasons Buying an RV is a Waste of Money and Energy

Get ready to challenge the romanticized image of the open road! RVs hold undeniable appeal – they promise freedom, spontaneity, and cozy nights under the stars. But before you’re seduced by the Instagram-ready #vanlife, there’s another side to consider.
