The Best Tools for Flexible Date Searches

' height=

See recent posts by Peter Thornton

If you have flexible travel dates, you’ll have a much easier time finding a cheap flight. Searching for flights only on specific travel dates leaves little wiggle room to find that amazing deal you’re looking for on your next trip. You can often save hundreds of dollars by simply flying when it’s cheap and sometimes it only requires shuffling your travel dates by a few days.

How to Find Cheap Flights with Flexible Travel Dates

While there is no magic day to buy a fare, there are certain times of the year and days of the week when it’s usually cheaper to fly . This varies by market but it is usually cheapest to fly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and in the shoulder seasons—late January to early March; May to early June; September to mid-November; and early December.

Flight Search Engines with the Best Flexible Date Tools

However, this is not an exact science and cheap flights can pop-up at any time. Luckily, there are some excellent tools out there that will search multiple travel dates at once so you can always find out when (and where) it’s cheapest to fly. Here are some of our favorite tools for finding the cheapest flights.

How to Use Google Flights to Find Cheap Flights

Google Flights flexible date calendar search

Pros: Fast, comprehensive filters integrated into the flex search, explore map.

Cons: Occasional price lag, limited OTA pricing, missing prices on some airlines.

Ever since Google acquired ITA Software, it has added more search features that make it the best overall flexible date search tool. To initiate a flexible date search with a calendar view, just enter a departure city, arrival city, and any desired travel dates. It will then show you a list of flights for those travel dates along with many other search filters where you can fine-tune your search by the number of stops, airlines, price range, flight times, connecting airports, flight duration, and even add any potential bag fees.

Pro Tip: You can enter up to 7 airports in both the departure or arrival fields to search for flights from or to multiple different cities at once. Just use the plus icon to the right of the "Where from?" field.

Google Flights search filters

Adjust the filters as you wish and then click on the calendar icon in the “departure date” field to see two months of pricing at once. You can easily scroll through the months to find the cheapest flights by clicking on the arrows on either side of the calendar. Adjust the trip length it searches for at the bottom left of the calendar box. Unfortunately, you can’t choose a range for the trip length and Google will only search for a specific trip length at one time. It may help to search one-way flights in each direction first and then combine cheap dates in a roundtrip search since not all airlines sell one-way tickets for half the roundtrip price.

If your dates are set in stone, but you’re flexible on where you want to travel, Google’s explore feature is an excellent tool to just browse where there are cheap flights on the map. Just enter your departure city and travel dates—leave the arrival city blank or just type in a general region such as “Europe” or “South America”. It will then give you a map view with prices all over the globe. You can zoom in/out and scroll around the world to find where it is cheap to fly on those dates.

Google Flights explore map

And for the holy grail of flexibility, just enter a departure city and choose the “flexible dates” radio button when choosing dates. It will give you the option to choose any month in the next six months or all months. And you can choose to search for a weekend, 1 week, or 2-week trip. The map will then show the best pricing from your city to destinations all over the world with those parameters.

Although I consider Google the best overall flexible date search tool, it’s not perfect. It does not show pricing on all airlines—most notably Southwest and often misses other airlines such as Aeromexico and Turkish Airlines. Occasionally, the pricing is off and will jump during the final step. Sometimes you can find lower prices on other search engines that link to smaller online travel agencies (OTAs) or airline sites that save the best fares for direct bookings.

If you want to get into an even more detailed search, you can try ITA’s matrix , but for a simpler and faster search tool with most of the same filters, I would recommend starting any flexible date search with Google Flights. But don’t forget about the others or you may miss out on a cheaper flight.

How to Use Kayak to Find Cheap Flights

Kayak flexible date search for cheap flights

Pros: Combines airlines, a thorough search of OTAs, holiday travel search.

Cons: Slow, filters don’t always adjust results, lag on updating prices.

Kayak is a good search tool for those who want to search for a cheap flight with a range of trip lengths. You may be willing to stay an extra day or two or leave a day earlier in order to find the best deal. To start a flexible date search, enter your departure and arrival cities (you can insert up to 3 in each). When choosing your dates, you’ll see color-coded approximate pricing on the calendar, but for a better flex search choose either “Weekend” or “Month” from the left-hand column.

The weekend search allows you search for cheap flights departing Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, returning Sunday or Monday, over a 4-week period. The month search allows you to choose a start date for the search and your desired trip duration. You can make this a set number or a range of up to 7 nights. For example, you can choose a trip length of 7 nights, 6-8 nights, 4-11 nights, or 26-33 nights, but not 10-20 nights. It will then search flights for 4 weeks from the start date and give you the results in a calendar view.

Kayak flexible date calendar for cheap flights

You can then adjust a number of filters on the side to refine your search, but be warned that these filters may not always adjust the prices in the calendar correctly. If you’ve done a roundtrip search, you’ll choose a departure date first and then it will give you a range of dates to choose for your return flight. Once you’ve chosen dates at the price you want, it will give you a specific flight. It’s always a good idea to click on the “find more options for the same dates” link in the bottom left of this pop-up. This will show you more flight options—some of which may even be a lower price.

Kayak is great at finding prices from many different OTAs, which means it may unearth cheaper flights than Google. It has some excellent search filters, but the pricing on the flexible date calendar doesn’t always line up when these are adjusted. Its major downfall is that it does not include all airlines and routings. Plus, it’s a little slow and clunky to use.

Kayak explore map

Kayak also has an explore tool similar to Google. Just enter a departure city and leave the arrival blank by clicking on the “Can’t decide where to go?” text. This gives you some great flexibility by being able to choose any month up to a year out or “anytime” to search for cheap flights to anywhere throughout the year. It also has a holiday search tool where you can search for cheap flights during specific holiday periods.

How to Use Skyscanner to Find Cheap Flights

Skycanner flexible dates cheap flight search

Pros: Simple flex search in list form, includes most airlines, wide range of OTAs.

Cons: Lack of filters before search, pricing on the calendar is not always correct.

Skyscanner is one of the most popular search engines worldwide. It was one of the first to adopt low-cost carriers in its search results and it continues to provide a very clean and straightforward search for travelers with flexible travel plans.

For flexible search results, click on the “whole month” tab when choosing dates. This will allow you to choose any specific month or just choose the cheapest month. A calendar will then appear allowing you to see the best prices for both the outbound and inbound flight at the same time. These results may not be entirely accurate since the price for the return date may depend on the departure date, but it’s a great way to get an idea of when cheap flights may be offered. You can also choose to see the results in a bar graph format if you wish.

Skyscanner flexible date calendar

Once you’ve chosen dates, it will bring you to the list of flights where you can filter your search further to weed out any airlines, trip durations, or the number of stops as you wish. One nice filter on Skyscanner is the ability to choose “only show airlines with flexible tickets”. With the recent uncertainty surrounding travel plans and restrictions, having flexible tickets can give you some much-needed peace of mind when booking a future flight.

Like Google and Kayak, Skyscanner also allows you to be flexible in where you want to travel. You can search for flights from your city to specific countries or to everywhere in the world. Just like with set destination searches, you can choose specific travel dates, certain months, or just choose the “cheapest month”. It will then give you results in list form, giving you the cheapest prices by country. After clicking on the country, it will drop down a list of prices to individual cities.

Skyscanner search everywhere cheap flights list

Unfortunately, it’s not possible to filter out airlines or certain schedules before doing a flex search. The only filter possible before you conduct your search is to choose nonstop flights only. This means you can’t weed out any low-cost airlines until you are on the specific dates landing page.

Skyscanner is great for its simplicity and it includes different OTAs that sometimes have lower fares than what you’ll find on Kayak. The lack of filters available before you conduct a search, however, means it’s often easier to find exactly what you’re looking for with a flex search on Google or Kayak first, and then checking Skyscanner to see if there is better pricing.

How to Use Momondo to Find Cheap Flights

momondo cheap flight search

Pros: Searches the most OTAs, often has lowest prices.

Cons: Slow to show all results, lacks a true flex search, requires researching policies on smaller OTAs.

To be honest, Momondo is not the best at flexible date searches, but I decided to include it in this list simply because it is the best meta search out there for finding the absolute lowest prices available. This is because Momondo sources the most OTAs—some of which you may need to research more on your own to know any caveats when booking. It’s safe to book with any of these OTAs, but there may be different change/cancelation policies and additional fees. Also, there may be a delay in ticketing on some of the smaller OTAs and prices are not guaranteed until your flight actually gets ticketed.

Momondo, managed by Kayak, has a similar flex search function in which you can opt to search for and compare cheap flights by selecting "weekend" or "month". Additionally, you can enter specific dates and select the option to show flights for anywhere within a range of up to three days from those selected dates. Once you conduct a date search, flexible or exact, you’ll get a bar graph showing pricing over a three-week period around your chosen travel dates. This graph is not completely accurate most of the time, but it can be a good indicator to check other dates if you see a big swing surrounding your dates.

My best suggestion is to first use another search engine, such as Google or Kayak, to find dates with the best price. Then, double check those exact dates on Momondo to see if you can find a lower price. Sometimes, the exact same flights are hundreds less on Momondo than other sites—especially on Star Alliance carriers. Other times the price difference may be minimal and you’ll have to decide if it’s worth it for the potential drawbacks. Just make sure you read the fine print about any extra change, cancelation, or foreign transaction fees on the actual booking site before you purchase.

Airline Sites with the Best Flexible Date Search Tools

In addition to meta search engines and OTAs, there are plenty of airlines that have great flexible search tools on their own websites. Although you won’t be able to compare other airlines with these searches, you can sometimes find lower fares on an airline’s site than anywhere else. And in some cases—like Southwest—it’s the only place you’ll find those airlines’ fares. These flexible date searches can sometimes be hidden or hard to find, so I’ll give links and/or explain how to find the most popular airline-specific flexible date search tools below.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Southwest

You won’t be able to book Southwest fares anywhere else so it’s always a good idea to check its low fare calendar in addition to other search engines. There is a link right below the arrival box on the home page or just go here .

Southwest low fare calendar

How to Find Cheap Flights on JetBlue

JetBlue has a somewhat hidden flex search tool. You can find a link by clicking on the “Book” header and then choosing “ Best Fare Finder ” or just go here . It will first display just the current month, but if you scroll you can see other month options. It’s somewhat annoying that you can’t just jump to a specific month, but you can eventually see JetBlue’s entire booking calendar on one page.

JetBlue best fare finder

How to Find Cheap Flights on Delta

Delta’s flex search is also hidden from its homepage. Use this link to start a search in calendar view by clicking on the “my dates are flexible” check box. Delta’s flex search has a unique feature that allows you to filter out Basic Economy fares if you wish.

How to Find Cheap Flights on United

From United’s home page, click on the “Calendar Shop” checkbox before searching. Then, just choose a month and desired trip length and you’ll be brought to a flexible date calendar. Another option is to start your search from the advanced search page and click on the “My dates are flexible” checkbox.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Alaska Airlines

On Alaska’s homepage, click on the “ all search options ” box just below the “adults” dropdown field. From there, you can click on a “Flexible dates” checkbox to start a search with a calendar view. You can also switch to a calendar view after doing an exact date search by choosing the “calendar” radio button in the “view by” section on the left-hand side of the page when choosing flights.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Hawaiian Airlines

At the bottom of the search box on Hawaiianairlines.com , you’ll see a link for a “Price Calendar”. Click this link to see fares in a calendar view. You can also toggle to a bar graph chart if you prefer.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Spirit

To find a monthly calendar on Spirit.com , you’ll first have to conduct an exact date search. This will default to a one-week flex search. You can toggle to a month view search by clicking “month” at the top of weekly view of fares. Toggle between the months using the arrows on either side of the calendar.

Spirit Airlines flexible date calendar

How to Find Cheap Flights on Frontier

Frontier also requires you to first search for exact dates and then shows you comparative prices for surrounding dates on a slider at the top of the following page. Unfortunately, you can’t exclude Discount Den fares from the calendar view, but you’ll notice that the standard fares are usually only slightly higher than the Discount Den fares you see on the calendar view.

How to Find Cheap Flights on Allegiant

Like the other ultra-low-cost carriers, Allegiant requires you to search for exact dates first. On the following page, you’ll see a “calendar view” button on the top right of both the departing and returning flight sections. Click these buttons to see fares on a flexible date calendar. Booking a roundtrip flight on Allegiant often gives you a small discount.

Allegiant flexible date calendar

I’ve only listed the major U.S. airline sites that allow you to see fares on a monthly calendar, but there are many international carriers that have this feature on their websites as well. Since there are many airlines around the world that only sell tickets on the company’s website, it’s always a good idea to do a Wikipedia search for the airport you are flying from to find out if there are any specific airlines you should check separately.

At Airfarewatchdog, we strive to check all avenues for cheap flights and the best way to find out when prices drop is to sign up for airfare alerts . Once you are alerted to a price you like, use these methods to search for cheap airfare with flexible travel dates and you’ll be enjoying your next vacation in no time.

What is the Deposit Date and Why is it Important?

Last Updated: October 29, 2009 November 17, 2023

When creating a single trip travel insurance quote , it is important to enter an accurate date for the initial trip deposit.  The deposit date is when the first payment was made towards any aspect of the trip.  Whether the payment was made to a travel agent, cruise company, airline or any other travel company, the date first payment made is the deposit date.

Deposit date is relevant because certain coverage benefits are only available for a set amount of time from the initial deposit.  Such benefits can include:  pre-existing conditions, cancel for any reason, financial default and cancel for work reasons.  Depending on the travel insurance plan, these benefits can be available anywhere from 14 to 30 days from the deposit date.

Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.

Trip Cancellation Insurance Explained

What is trip cancellation insurance?

Covered reasons for trip cancellation, what is not covered by trip cancellation insurance, cancel for any reason trip insurance, is trip cancellation insurance expensive, different ways to get trip cancellation insurance, which insurance coverage is best for me.

When booking travel, particularly expensive trips consisting of nonrefundable reservations, it makes sense to consider trip cancellation insurance since it can protect your deposit if your plans do not materialize due to unforeseen events. However, not every reason for canceling a trip will qualify for coverage, so you’ll want to familiarize yourself with the basics of trip cancellation insurance.

Trip cancellation coverage can be purchased as part of a comprehensive travel insurance policy , or you can receive it for free when you hold certain premium credit cards. The benefit is designed to protect prepaid, nonrefundable reservations, including flights, hotel reservations and other bookings if the trip is canceled due to an extraordinary circumstance. Each policy will state exactly which events are considered valid reasons for cancellations.

With COVID-19 still affecting travel plans, you’ll want to pay close attention to which reasons for cancellation due to the pandemic are valid. For example, wanting to cancel a trip you booked a while ago because your destination now has rising COVID-19 numbers and you’re afraid to travel is not likely a valid reason.

If you want to be able to cancel a trip for truly any reason, consider the Cancel For Any Reason supplemental upgrade when purchasing your insurance policy. CFAR will allow you to get up to 75% of your trip investment back as long as the trip is cancelled at least two days before departure.

Imagine you’ve booked a two-week vacation to Italy costing $5,000 ($1,000 flight, $3,500 hotel and $500 excursions), all of which is nonrefundable. Then, a week before your departure date, you fall and break your leg.

So, what does trip cancellation insurance cover?

If you have trip cancellation insurance, you’ll be able to get your entire prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost back (as long as the entire amount was insured), since injuries that necessitate medical treatment and prevent you from taking your trip qualify as a covered reason.

Other covered reasons include death of your traveling companion, inclement weather that results in disrupted service, jury duty, terrorist incident, job termination and other extraordinary events.

Although this is not an entire list of all the covered reasons, generally the cancellation must be due to unforeseen circumstances to qualify for a reimbursement. Review the fine print of your policy for the details of exactly which reasons are covered. When seeking reimbursement, you’ll need to submit claims to the insurance provider to substantiate your claim.

Although a wide range of reasons allow you to receive your prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses back in the event of a trip cancellation, there are important exclusions to know about.

Trip cancellation insurance will not cover losses arising from self-harm, foreseeable events, acts of war, taking part in activities considered dangerous (e.g., skydiving, bungee jumping, endurance races, etc.), a felony, childbirth, dental treatment and more.

So what if you want the flexibility to cancel your trip for reasons other than those covered by your policy? For that, you're going to need the CFAR insurance mentioned above.

CFAR is often available as an add-on to travel insurance policies, and while it can come in handy if you want to cancel your trip just because, you're not likely to get all your money back.

Most CFAR policies will only reimburse 75% of your nonrefundable travel expenditures.

The price of trip cancellation insurance can vary based on the traveler’s age, destination, length of trip, cost of trip and insurance company.

Using the same $5,000, two-week trip to Italy as mentioned above, a search of policies on SquareMouth (a NerdWallet partner) ranged from $115 to $470, representing 2.3% to 9.4% of the total trip cost.

» Learn more: How much is travel insurance?

All policies provide 100% coverage of the trip cost, however the more expensive plans usually have higher limits on benefits like medical evacuation.

If you’re only looking for trip cancellation coverage and no other protections, a policy equating to 2.3% of the total trip expenses seems reasonable.

On your travel credit card

Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card

Trip cancellation coverage can be included as part of a comprehensive travel insurance plan or offered as a benefit on premium travel credit cards.

For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® will reimburse you or your immediate family members up to $10,000 per trip. The Business Platinum Card® from American Express and many other American Express cards also offer up to $10,000 in trip cancellation coverage. Terms apply.

These premium cards also offer other insurance benefits like trip interruption coverage, emergency assistance services, trip delay and more.

If you travel often and typically purchase trip cancellation coverage, consider applying for one of the cards that offer complimentary travel insurance . Not only will you get trip insurance benefits, but you will also get other travel perks and statement credits that can partly offset the annual fee.

Supplement by purchasing policies out-of-pocket

If the coverage limits offered on the cards aren’t sufficient or you’re looking for more protections (e.g., coverage for emergency medical expenses), you’d be better off with a travel insurance . Although you’d incur an additional cost for purchasing a comprehensive plan, you’d have many more benefits not commonly found in the insurance policies offered by the credit cards.

A comprehensive trip cancellation policy is likely to cover canceled flights so long as the flight or flights are nonrefundable and are a part of the total, prepaid expenses covered by your policy. Insurance provided by travel cards typically includes trip delay or cancellation coverage so long as you used that card to pay for your flight reservations.

If you're forced to cancel your trip due to extraordinary circumstances beyond your control, travel insurance will provide coverage for some or all of your nonrefundable travel expenditures, depending on your policy. Covered events will vary, so be sure to review the terms of any plan you intend to purchase.

Trip cancellation insurance is available for purchase from a wide range of companies and is often included as a benefit on travel credit cards. Under certain circumstances, it provides coverage for prepaid travel expenses in the event that you cannot complete your trip as planned.

A comprehensive trip cancellation policy is likely to cover canceled flights so long as the flight or flights are nonrefundable and are a part of the total, prepaid expenses covered by your policy.

Insurance provided by travel cards

typically includes trip delay or cancellation coverage so long as you used that card to pay for your flight reservations.

If you’re going on a trip consisting of costly flights, hotel reservations and excursions and would like to protect your prepaid, nonrefundable deposit but do not need any other coverage, a minimally priced trip cancellation insurance policy is a good choice.

If you have a premium travel credit card , check if you already have trip cancellation insurance as a benefit before you purchase a policy.

However, if you’re looking for additional coverage like travel medical insurance , and/or a basic plan doesn’t have adequate limits, consider a comprehensive travel insurance policy from providers such as AAA , Allianz , and AIG . Common issues that may mean you need to change your booking are the travel policies shifting of a country you intend on visiting by requiring you to quarantine on arrival or on your return, which may not be feasible. Or you may become ill, requiring you to change your travel plans. Whatever the case may be, many airlines charge a premium for you to change or amend your booking once made. To get around these exorbitant change fees, it is sometimes wise to look for flexible flights that have no change fees. You can find these 'no change fees' tickets on our site via our first flight search engine results. Select the filter that says 'no change fees', and we will show you the flights via KAYAK with flexible rebooking options for no extra charge. Just check the change fees for a regular booking to see if the price is lower than booking a flexible 'no change fee' flight.

How to use Skyscanner flexible dates?

Skyscanner has one of the world's most comprehensive flexible date flight engines. They offer users the ability to search from entire countries to 'everywhere' - for example, the United States to anywhere in the world. This search shows you the cheapest airports to fly to from your departing country. Moreover, Skyscanner lets you select on their calendar which month you would like to travel in (for a monthly overview) or select the 'cheapest month', which will tell you the cheapest month to fly in the whole year. They have flexible calendars for both one way and return flights. The downside to the Skyscanner flexible dates calendar is that it only shows flights found by users in the last four days, which sometimes mean the results can be outdated. Moreover, less travelled routes contain fewer historical prices and sometimes none. We use Skyscanner data to populate our calendars; the only difference is that we let you compare numerous flight comparison site results alongside Skyscanner results which often lead to savings, sometimes up to 20%.

How to use KAYAK flexible dates?

KAYAK has a handy 'explore' feature which shows you the best flexible flight deals plotted on an interactive global map. All you need is to enter your departure airport, and the map will show you the best domestic and international flight deals found by other KAYAK users in the last 48 hours. You can also refine your results by searching for a particular country, a specific month, direct flights or flights with stops, budget, duration and type of trip. Once again, because it relies on other users' historical usage, you may find that less searched for routes have little data about them. You can play around with their flexible calendar here: KAYAK/explore . Once you have found a deal on KAYAK, we encourage you to use our site to price check against multiple other aggregators on our website as, on occasion, they can beat the prices found on KAYAK.

How to use Google flights flexible dates?

Google flights have the fastest search engine on the planet, results load in seconds, and they have very comprehensive calendars which show you the cheapest days to travel in the entire month. You can see their flexible flight price calendars by selecting the 'date grid' or the 'price graph' buttons. The date grid presents data in a calendar view whilst the price graph shows you flights in bar graph form. The ITA matrix provides the data and is not dependent on previous searchers to populate it, making it some of the most comprehensive flexible flight data on the web. However, it is a fact that Google flights don't always get you the best possible deal due to the limited number of OTA's Google searches. To get the best possible benefit from them, we recommend you get the best dates to fly from their flexible calendars, then come to FlightsFinder.com and compare multiple aggregators on those dates and see if you can save even more. You can often save up to 20% more simply by checking numerous flight aggregators via our easy to use dashboard.

How to use Kiwi.com flexible dates?

Kiwi.com is the Czech Republic's biggest metasearch engine famous for finding cheap flights by virtual interlining, stitching together fares from airlines that traditionally do not work together. You can find their flexible flight calendars on their search results page by selecting the 'pricing table' or to view a bar graph of the lowest priced flights instead, pick 'price trends'. Their flexible flight results are very comprehensive, and you can find data on even the most obscure routes. Once again, we suggest finding the best days to fly by using our Flexi calendars then price checking their live results with our multi aggregator tab based flight dashboard to see if you can pinch a bit more off your ticket.

How to find the cheapest flexible flight 3 days before or after your flight

Sometimes you can find cheaper flights if you look a few days on either side of your travel dates if your schedule permits. Please enter your departure and arrival airports, then select your preferred dates of flying; after that, choose our flexible dates tab and check the box which says +/- 3 days. We will then take you to our flexible dates calendar to quickly look at prices on surrounding dates. Please note that the display prices were found in the last 15 days and may no longer be available - the only way to check live availability is to select a date and click 'show flights' - then compare multiple live prices.

How to find the cheapest flexible flight in the entire month

Our flight finder also allows you to find the cheapest return flight in any particular month. For example, say you wanted to see the most inexpensive return flight from Miami to Toronto or Los Angeles to Mexico City in June. First, enter your departure airport to one of those arrival cities. After that, select some dates in June in our calendar; select the flexible dates tab, and check the box that says 'whole month'. We will then show you the cheapest combination of departure and arrival dates for your search on our calendar in that particular month. Our results are colour coded so that the lowest price will be in blue, whilst lower prices will be in green while the more expensive days will be in red. Once again, prices are rough guides only found by other users in the last 15 days.

How to find the cheapest flexible flight in the entire year?

We will then pinpoint the cheapest date combinations to fly in seconds on our calendar in the entire year. How to find the cheapest flexible flights to anywhere?

If you don't have a fixed destination in mind and are looking for inspiration on where to fly next, we recommend using our 'flexible - search everywhere' option. First, enter your departure airport, select 'search everywhere', then enter the dates you are looking to travel or look for the cheapest flights in the entire month or the entire year by checking the relevant box. Once you click search, we will list the most affordable destinations fitting your search parameters leaving from your chosen departure airport. You can also refine flights to see direct options by selecting the 'direct only' check box on our destinations list.

How to find the cheapest flight to a particular country?

You can then select the country you are interested in visiting in the destinations list, and we will show you the cheapest cities in that country to fly to. Another alternate way of seeing the best deals to any country is by using our recent deals carousel engine. You can find this below our main search engine form. To use the recent deals engine, enter your departure airport and enter the country you are interested in visiting; you can refine flights by month or select 'anytime' to show you the cheapest deals we have ever found.

How to find the cheapest flight to a particular city?

To find the cheapest flights to any city, enter your desired destination in our search engine. After that, you choose to see the best deal in the entire year by selecting the year on our flexible dates checklist; this will give you the lowest prices ever found. Select the 'whole month' for costs in a particular month and +/- 3 days to see a few days on different sides of your chosen travel dates.

Changing or canceling a reservation

A person in the backseat of a car, looking at their cell phone.

If you'd like to make a change to a confirmed reservation, you can! All you need to do is submit a trip change request to your Host. If you’re curious about other things, like how to cancel, figure out refunds, or understand cancellation policies, you’re in the right spot.

Making changes to a trip

Need to adjust dates or cancel your reservation? It’s pretty easy—just go to Trips to submit a change request. But before you cancel, be sure to read the cancellation policy for your stay to find out if you get a refund (and how much). If you’ve booked a place where there’s a more strict cancellation policy, you could also consider changing your dates instead. Just put in a change request to the Host and any difference in price will be shown before you confirm the request. If you have an extenuating circumstance and you’re covered under our policy, let us know when you go through the cancellation process.

What is a ‘trip deposit date’?

What is a ‘trip deposit date’?

The trip deposit date is any date on which you paid for any portion of an upcoming trip.

Perhaps you sent a deposit in on a vacation rental or snagged a good deal on airfare, for example. When you make the first trip deposit date is important because it essentially starts the clock on how soon you should purchase your travel insurance if you want certain coverage.

Many travel insurance plans require you to purchase your coverage within a certain number of days (usually between 10 and 14 days) of making your initial trip deposit. In fact, this is one of the reasons we recommend buying your travel insurance as soon as possible to avoid one of the most common travel insurance ‘loopholes’ .

Coverage that requires purchase soon after trip deposit:

  • ‘Cancel for any reason’ coverage
  • ‘Cancel for work reasons’ coverage
  • Pre-existing medical condition coverage
  • Financial defau l t coverage
  • Hurricane coverage
  • Work conflict coverage

You can purchase your travel insurance up to the last minute , but you may not have coverage for certain events if you wait that long. Buying the travel insurance plan too late is one of the most common reasons for claim denials, so pay attention to that first trip deposit date.

What Is the Cheapest Time to Book a Flight?

what is trip date

Want to get the cheapest flight possible? You're not alone. We're always trying to lock in the lowest price for airline tickets, whether it's to visit family or for that next great vacation. Thanks to the internet and online travel agencies and discount providers that replaced traditional agents, we now have access to a broader range of prices and options and all at our fingertips.

Key Takeaways:

  • Consumers have a range of options available when it comes to booking airline tickets.
  • The least expensive fares for flights to destinations in North America should be booked between 5.5 and 1.5 months before your departure date.
  • Seasonal changes and holidays can create price fluctuations in ticket prices.
  • The day of the week that you book a flight does not affect the price, but the days when you fly do.
  • Using a rewards credit card to book could help you earn miles or points that you could apply to savings on future flights.

Why Do Airline Ticket Prices Fluctuate?

If you're interested in getting the best deal on flights, it helps to understand what causes changes in pricing. Timing plays an important part. Specifically, plane tickets usually don't get cheaper closer to the departure date or if you book too early—more than five months in advance. Instead, flights tend to be the least expensive when you book between 5.5 and 1.5 months (164 and 46 days) in advance of your departure date.

According to CheapAir.com, you can expect rates to be higher both before and after that period. There may, of course, be some compounding factors that can affect this. For example, seasonal changes and holidays can have a big impact on pricing at different times.

Using a free tool like Google Flights can help you stay on top of fare pricing trends so you can pinpoint the best time to book flights.

The Volatility of Airfare Prices

Discount airfare company CheapAir.com analyzes millions of flights and ticket prices each year. In its 2023 CheapAir.com study, the company looked at fares for more than 917 million flights in over 8,000 markets. The results show volatility is the main reason behind the prices of flights.

The company found that ticket prices fluctuate based on the time span between the purchase and the flight, seasonality , and holidays. According to the study, the day of the week of your purchase is a myth and does not affect the price of tickets. However, the day of the week that you fly does matter: Wednesdays, followed by Tuesdays, are the least expensive for domestic flights, and Fridays and Sundays are the priciest.

6 Booking Zones

From its extensive analysis, CheapAir.com identified six booking zones for airfares based on the number of days before departure and what to expect during each of them. Here's how fares compare across each booking zone. The table below lists each booking period, the number of days in advance, and some of the key considerations for each.

The general recommendations that CheapAir.com lays out in the six booking zones can be helpful guidelines for buying plane tickets. But the company notes they may change depending on the season.

  • Fall : You can usually wait a bit longer to book fall travel and still get decent deals. The average best time to buy is 49 days in advance. The exception is Thanksgiving week, for which you should book travel earlier.
  • Winter : Travel around the Christmas and New Year holidays will usually cost more no matter what; otherwise, winter can be an affordable time to travel. For non-holiday travel, you can buy plane tickets a mere 26 days in advance and still get a good deal.
  • Spring : Many people travel during a wide range of days for spring break, so the key to travel during this season is to plan ahead. If possible, buy your tickets 87 days in advance.
  • Summer : This is the most popular season for American travel. CheapAir.com recommends planning ahead and buying your tickets 182 days in advance for air travel during this time.

Regardless of the time, be sure to understand any health and safety restrictions you're expected to observe in the terminal or onboard when you're booking your flights.

Additional Tips for Booking Flights

While you shop around for the best possible flight, remember the tips and windows of time laid out by CheapAir.com above. But you should also remember one more thing: When you spot a bargain, take it. If you wait, it may cost your more money in the end. Generally speaking, the longer you wait, the more you'll end up paying, which may not be good for your budget.

Another thing to consider is how a travel rewards credit card could help with saving money on airfare. For example, you may be able to find a card that offers perks such as:

  • Free checked bags
  • Global Entry/ TSA PreCheck fee credits
  • Free companion passes
  • Elite status in frequent flyer programs
  • Complimentary airport lounge access
  • Free food and drinks onboard
  • Complimentary in-flight WiFi

Those kinds of benefits may not trim money off your actual ticket cost but they can save you on other flight-related expenses. Checking out some of the best travel rewards cards can help you find one that offers the right combination of rewards, benefits, and costs. When comparing travel rewards cards, be sure to consider whether any blackout dates or other restrictions may apply for booking award travel.

When Is the Best Period to Book a Flight?

CheapAir.com's survey on airline ticket prices recognizes six booking periods. The best time to book an airline flight is the prime booking window, which is 46 to 164 days in advance. Airfares generally average 5% of their lowest prices during this period. Compare that to last-minute bookings (between 0 and six days in advance) when you'll pay an average of $220 more than the prime booking window.

Why Do Airline Prices Fluctuate?

There are a number of reasons why airline prices fluctuate. These factors include booking and flight seasons, holidays, seasonal changes, and overall volatility. For instance, the travel restrictions put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic pushed prices down as demand for travel waned. Similarly, higher fuel costs and consumer demand can push ticket prices higher.

How Do I Find the Best Airline Ticket Prices?

The best way to find the cheapest airline ticket price is to shop around. Price your tickets with different airlines and agents. You can always consult individual airlines and traditional travel agents, or search online for the best price yourself. Emergencies can arise, but booking your ticket up to seven months in advance will get you the best seats and low prices. But the best time to book your ticket is the prime booking window, which is between 46 and 164 days in advance.

What Is the Best Day of the Week to Book Airline Tickets?

You may have heard that there is a cheap window of time during the week to book your airline tickets. According to CheapAir.com, that's a myth. The day and time of the week have no impact on ticket prices.

CheapAir.com has found that Wednesday is the least expensive day to fly and costs almost $100 less than if you fly on Sunday, the priciest day to fly. Tuesday is the second cheapest day to fly.

Getting a great deal on flights means understanding what affects airfare pricing. In 2020, domestic fares dropped sharply from $352 to $292 on average due to travel restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. Airlines increased prices after the restrictions were lifted, thanks to higher inflation, fuel costs, and a rise in consumer demand. But airfares were down more than 13% in October 2023 compared to prices at the same time in 2022, according to the Consumer Price Index data. Still, you can save if you use an airline miles credit to book flights that help you earn miles or points toward future air travel. You may also consider joining one or more frequent flyer programs to rack up additional money-saving miles.

Trip Delay, Trip Interruption and Trip Cancellation Insurance Explained

Trip delay, cancellation, interruption

What does trip delay insurance cover?

The travel delay  benefit helps you get through short(ish), unexpected pauses in your travel plans. It can reimburse you for lost pre-paid expenses as well as eligible costs you incur because of the delay, including meals, accommodations, communication and transportation. Note that for such an event to be considered a delay, it must last for the minimum time stated in your plan. Also, the delay must have been caused by a covered reason as listed in your plan, such as a travel carrier delay or lost travel documents.

How does trip delay insurance work in real life? Let’s say your 6 p.m. flight to Orlando is grounded due to a storm, and the next available flight doesn’t leave until 9 a.m. the next morning. Here’s what trip delay insurance may cover:

  • Your dinner and breakfast
  • Your hotel room for the night
  • Your cab ride to the hotel from the airport and back
  • The cost of the hotel room you had booked for your first night in Orlando (if the hotel won’t refund your money)

There are limits, of course: travel delay benefits reimburse reasonable expenses up to the limit shown on your letter of confirmation, for example $200/day. Don’t expect your travel insurance to pay for a lavish sushi dinner and a stay at the Ritz-Carlton.

But wait: Why do you even need travel insurance for this scenario? Aren’t airlines supposed to pay for your hotel room and meals if your flight is delayed? Not necessarily.

Most U.S. airlines have agreed to provide travelers with a hotel voucher and/or meal voucher when they experience a controllable flight cancellation or delay of a certain length. A controllable delay/cancellation is one that was caused by a reason within the airline’s control, such as a crew shortage or a mechanical issue. If the delay/cancellation is caused by a reason out of the airline’s control, they’re not obligated to offer you anything other than a refund (if you choose not to fly) or a seat on a different flight. That’s why you need travel insurance!

What does trip interruption insurance cover?

A  trip interruption  occurs when a traveler must unexpectedly cut short their trip and return home. Additionally, interruption can cause you to stay at your destination longer than originally planned (not always a bad thing, right?) Trip interruption insurance can refund lost prepaid costs, minus any available refunds and up to the maximum benefit amount, and cover the cost of your extra accommodations and/or your trip home.

Trip interruption benefits only apply if the interruption is caused by a covered reason. Allianz Travel Insurance plans list many covered reasons for interrupting or canceling your trip. Some common covered reasons include the serious covered illness or injury of the traveler, traveling companion or a family member; a natural disaster that renders your home or your destination uninhabitable; and the cessation of services by your airline, cruise line or other carrier, causing you to miss more than half your trip.

Trip interruption insurance is essential for those travel emergencies you just can’t predict. Imagine you’re in the middle of a week-long  safari in the Serengeti  when you receive word that your mom has been hospitalized with pneumonia. You need to return home ASAP! With the help of the travel experts on our 24-hour assistance team, you can get on the first available flight out of Kilimanjaro and travel back to the U.S. Trip interruption insurance can help cover the cost of the flight and reimburse you for the unused portion of your safari.

One key condition to keep in mind with trip interruption is that, in order to take full advantage of the benefit, you need to inform all your travel suppliers (hotels, tour operators, etc.) within 72 hours of finding out your trip will be interrupted. So, in the heat of the moment, be sure to keep your cool and communicate your change of plans as needed.

What does trip cancellation insurance cover?

Trip cancellation  insurance covers situations when you must cancel your trip before you leave for a covered reason (generally, the same covered reasons that apply to trip interruption coverage.) Trip cancellation benefits can refund the prepaid, nonrefundable costs of your trip, such as airfare, cruise tickets, tour bookings and hotel reservations. Plus, if you prepaid for shared accommodations, and your travel companion needs to cancel their trip for a covered reason, you can be reimbursed additional accommodation fees, which is huge if you’re taking a cruise.

Similar to trip interruption, the 72-hour notification rule applies here as well. So be sure to let your airline, tour operator, cruise line and others know about the trip cancellation in a timely fashion.

What else should you know when your trip doesn't go as planned?

It’s possible for a trip delay to turn into a trip interruption if you’ve lost more than half the total length of your trip scheduled trip length due to a covered travel delay. Let’s say you’re about to about to leave for a five-day Caribbean cruise, but a blizzard grounds your Miami-bound plane for two days. By the time you get to Florida, your ship is long gone, and you can’t find a flight to its next port of call. You may be able to make a trip interruption claim.

Just remember that when your trip is delayed or interrupted, you need to do everything you can to continue your scheduled plans. Try to catch up with your cruise ship or tour group (our hotline staff can help). Document your efforts. Keep your receipts. And as we’ve mentioned, notify all your travel providers and your insurer as soon as possible once you cancel your trip. Here are some  tips on how to use your trip delay benefit —and how you know it’s time to cancel the trip.

Always read your plan documents carefully so you understand your coverage, and call Allianz Global Assistance if you have any questions. Travelers covered by our insurance plans can access 24-hour assistance anytime via the Allyz ® TravelSmart app or by calling 1-800-654-1908 (from the U.S.) or 1-804-281-5700 (collect). Wishing you safe—and uninterrupted—travels!

During the complications of trip planning and booking, the last thing you should have to worry about is when to buy travel insurance and assistance services for the trip. We’ll help you answer that question, so you can focus on having a great trip.

In this post, we break down the best time to buy travel protection and when it's possible to get a plan, including buying last minute and details on when you should buy in order to qualify for coverage for  pre-existing medical conditions  and  Trip Cancellation for Any Reason .

Some coverages and features of  our travel protection plans  include time sensitive factors that are important to understand in order to get the most out of what you pay for. At Generali Global Assistance, we try to make our plans  easy to understand .

Imagine.... you set up your trip way in advance, paid for it all and even  shopped around for travel protection . You didn't buy a plan right away, thinking you had plenty of time before you leave. But, when you get around to making the purchase to help protect your trip, you realize it's too late to qualify for coverage for your pre-existing medical condition! You can avoid this kind of situation by considering a key factor—timing when to buy travel insurance and assistance services.

When is the best time to buy travel protection?

We suggest you  buy a travel protection plan  when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you maximize your coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip.

For  cruises  and tours, it may not be an issue until cancellation penalties start to kick in. That could be at six months prior to departure.

Later on, you can  add coverage to the same plan  for your hotel, tours and other pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs. It’s best to contact us to add coverage as soon as possible after you make new trip payments to be sure you have coverage for your full trip cost.

When can you buy travel insurance and assistance services?

Generali Global Assistance travel protection plans can be purchased  online up to 18 months before the trip departure date and up until the day prior to departure.

Often travelers will pay for a trip in installments, and they wonder when they can buy travel protection, since they haven't paid fully yet. Rest assured—you can. When getting a quote, simply enter the total  trip costs  that you will be paying and you can modify the plan if those costs change, as long as you have not left on your trip, filed a claim or incurred any losses.

When is it too late to buy travel insurance and assistance services?

You are not able to buy a Generali Global Assistance travel protection plan on the day you are leaving on your trip or once you are on your trip. At 12 a.m. the day you depart for your trip it becomes too late to buy travel protection.

Yes, you can buy travel protection once you've booked your flight. In fact, you should wait to buy it until you book your flight and know the ticket price.

Last Minute Travel Protection

Procrastinators are welcome here. While we don't suggest waiting too long before insuring your trip, you can get a last minute travel protection plan from Generali Global Assistance. The last chance for you to buy a plan from us is the day before you leave on your insured trip. Sorry—you won't be able to buy a plan at the airport as you're leaving, when you leave your home or once you arrive at your destination.

Trip Cancellation coverage starts the day after purchase at 12:01 a.m. We'll email your plan confirmation, so you'll have all of the information you need when you leave in case you need to  contact us  for assistance on your trip.

One downside to buying last minute travel protection is that certain coverages are dependent on when you buy your plan and may not be available if you buy last minute. Read the next section for more details.

Top Reasons to Buy Early

Trip cancellation.

Life is unpredictable, so it makes sense to be covered for as much time as possible before you start traveling. All sorts of things can throw a wrench into your travel plans after you've paid for the trip, forcing you to cancel. Why wait to insure your trip until the week before you leave?

When travelers can’t go on their trip due to a covered reason,  Trip Cancellation  coverage pays for forfeited, pre-paid, non-refundable travel arrangements. Travelers can get maximum coverage for Trip Cancellation if they purchase their plan as soon as they make their first trip payment, like airfare.

If you're interested in Trip Cancellation for Any Reason*, an available add-on coverage with our Premium Plan, don't wait to insure your trip. Your plan must be purchased within 24 hours of the initial deposit for your trip in order to qualify for the coverage.  Learn more about Trip Cancellation for Any Reason  and other requirements that must be met.

Pre-Existing Conditions

Some travelers may need to look for plans that offer coverage for  pre-existing medical conditions  when they insure their trip, and it’s important to understand the purchase window to qualify for that feature. If you don't buy a plan during the right timeframe, you might not be covered for Trip Cancellation, Medical and Dental and other claims related to that pre-existing condition.

Coverage for pre-existing conditions is included with our  Premium Plan , but coverage must be bought prior to or within 24 hours of the final trip payment, travelers must be medically able to travel at the time the coverage is purchased and they must insure 100% of their pre-paid trip costs that would be subject to cancellation penalties or restrictions. Coverage for pre-existing conditions isn’t available with all our plans.

An important advantage offered by our plans is that the exclusion for pre-existing conditions does not apply to non-traveling family members. In other words, if a family member who is not traveling with you has a pre-existing medical condition, and you must cancel your trip because their illness unexpectedly arises, you can still be covered.

Travel Protection Review Period

Another reason to buy travel protection soon after booking is how easy it is to get a refund of the plan cost if you review the details and decide it’s not right for you.

Travelers who have bought a plan but wish to cancel it and receive a full refund of their plan cost, may do so within a designated number of days from the date of purchase as long as they haven’t left for their trip or filed a claim. This is referred to as a  “free look” period  and is available with all Generali Global Assistance travel protection plans.

While the timeframe for the free look period varies from state to state, it is generally 10 days from purchase. Travelers should refer to their  Plan Documents  to determine the number of free look period days available in their state of residence.

When you’re ready to buy, what do you do first?

The first step to get travel protection is to give us some information about your trip so you can compare plans and prices. It’s easy and you can jump right into it at our Get a Quote page . We’ll take you through the step-by-step process of choosing and buying a plan and if you need more guidance you can follow our How to Buy Travel Protection Guide .

Other Timing FAQs

The Trip Cancellation coverage included with your plan goes into effect the day after you purchase travel protection at 12:01 a.m. Coverage ends on your scheduled departure date and once you begin your trip, you can no longer be reimbursed for Trip Cancellation.

As soon as you depart, the other coverages in your plan become effective, including Medical and Dental, Trip Interruption, Travel Delay, Emergency Assistance and Transportation, Baggage  and more . Those coverages end as soon as one of these occurs: You return from your trip, the trip is completed, your scheduled return date arrives (unless you qualify for  extension of coverage ), or your arrival at the destination on a one-way trip.

Once you’re home, you can continue to claim for covered Medical and Dental costs that occur within one year from the date of your Sickness or Injury that occurred during your trip.

A variety of  Travel Services  are included with your plan. Concierge Services are available to use as soon as you purchase your plan and end when you return. Travel Support Services can be used during your trip. ID Theft Resolution Services are also available for a full 180 days starting on the scheduled departure date.

If you buy travel protection after a storm is named, your plan will not provide coverage for storm-related claims.  See our Storm Coverage Alerts  for more information.

We suggest you buy travel protection when you make your first trip payment, like airfare or a cruise. That way you have a long coverage period in case you need to cancel your trip, and if you need to file a claim related to a storm, you will have bought the plan well before the storm was forecasted.

Generali travel protection plans can be purchased online up to 18 months before the trip departure date and up until the day prior to departure.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Hoda Kotb has more mystery man in her future.

The “Today” show co-host gushed about her “really fun” first, second and soon-to-be third dates with a “really handsome” guy on Friday.

Kotb, 59, told “Drew Barrymore Show” viewers that she had “fun … talking about something that wasn’t kids and wasn’t work.”

Hoda Kotb

She explained, “It was just life, and I missed that. And he’s really handsome. Sometimes that’s it.”

Kotb hadn’t been on a date in two years before stepping out with the man , who has yet to be identified, in March.

She first spoke to Kelly Clarkson about the “great time” she had back on the dating scene.

The journalist credited her co-host Jenna Bush Hager with setting her up.

“She goes, ‘Look, I just want you to know, I don’t really know him. A friend of mine knows a friend,'” Kotb told “Entertainment Tonight.”

She praised Bush Hager, 42, for her “great picker.”

Jenna Bush Hager and Hoda Kotb

The former “Dateline” correspondent’s last long-term relationship was with ex-fiancé Joel Schiffman from 2013 to 2021.

Kotb seemingly gave insight into the end of their engagement Friday, telling Barrymore that she became “exhausted” trying to “please” her partners in relationships.

“If he was happy, then I would be happy. I wanted him to be happy. I wasn’t myself, and now I’ve gotten to a point where if the date’s not for me … I don’t mind being confident and knowing what I want.”

Joel Schiffman and Hoda Kotb

She is no longer “twisting [her]self into a pretzel to make everyone feel good all the time because [she’s] done that for most of [her] life.”

As for whether Kotb is open to dating men with kids — as she is the mother of daughters Haley , 7, and Hope , 5 — she prefers men who “knows what it’s like to love someone as much as we love our kids.”

The Daytime Emmy winner also pays close attention to how potential partners talk about their exes.

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilizing the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United States over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was July. If you’re booking an international flight, then January is the cheapest month to fly and June the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re traveling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 weeks before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 weeks prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying non-stop is not possible and you will have to fly with a layover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a layover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than non-stop flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with rental cars, vacation packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.com/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible "weekend" or "month" search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world, airports around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane tickets sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.

UNC Basketball: Top-Five Prep Finalizing Date for Trip to Chapel Hill

Matt giles | may 6, 2024.

UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis

A few months ago, Huntington Prep (W.Va.) standout Darryn Peterson announced eight finalists in his recruitment, including his long-time UNC basketball suitors, along with Arkansas, Baylor, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan, and Kansas. However, he recently noted plans to expand his search for a college destination, no longer limiting it to the eight schools he named.

Even so, UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis and his staff appear to be among Peterson's favorites. After all, the 6-foot-5, 195-pound phenom, a smooth five-star who ranks No. 3 overall and No. 1 among guards on the 247Sports 2025 Composite, told Rivals' Rob Cassidy over the weekend that he's now finalizing plans to visit Chapel Hill.

And it seems Peterson, who has previously applied the "Guard University" tag when talking about UNC since receiving an offer from the Tar Heels over a year ago, is eagerly awaiting the opportunity to check out the program in person.

"I'm excited to see what it's like down there [at UNC]," Peterson explained to Cassidy. "I watched some of their games this year, and I've been waiting to take this official visit for a while. Watching RJ Davis and how ball-dominant he was and how he got to hoop this year, I feel like if I go there we could have similar games."

Darryn Peterson, one of nine five-star talents on the 2025 UNC basketball offer sheet, added that Kansas, Ohio State, Arkansas, and Kentucky are among his other most active suitors.

What to Know Before Booking a National Park Trip This Summer

Additional routes in popular parks now require reservations, the annual pass gets a big change, Juneteenth is now a new free entrance day and more changes for 2024.

A deep-blue mountain creek with evergreen trees and brown grasses along its shores is in front of a towering gray mountain peak scattered with snow.

By Lauren Matison

In 2023, the seashores, lakeshores, battlefields, historic sites, monuments and more that make up the National Park Service had 325.5 million visits , an increase of 4 percent from the year before.

The National Park Service director, Charles F. Sams III, praised the surge of interest in “learning our shared American story throughout the hidden gems of the National Parks System.”

Expecting an even greater turnout in 2024, the Park Service and Recreation.gov , the booking platform for federal land reservations, have implemented new measures to streamline the park experience, manage overcrowding and safeguard the environment.

More parks are requiring reservations

To better avoid congested trails, packed parking lots and overflowing trash cans, additional parks are joining Rocky Mountain , Arches and Glacier National Parks this year in requiring day-use permits, timed entries and other reservations for travelers who wish to visit, particularly during peak hours, holidays and the parks’ high seasons. Yosemite National Park is reinstating a timed-entry system it instituted in 2020, but paused in 2022.

Many park enthusiasts expressed mixed feelings about the reservation policies, with some lamenting a lack of first-come, first-served campsites while others find comfort in knowing they have a confirmed booking. As nearly 75 percent of visitors each year descend on national parks from May to October (and often on weekends), park officials stand by the system.

“In some parks, the level of demand is exceeding the capacity for which infrastructure was designed or is outpacing the National Park Service’s ability to sustainably support visitation,” said Kathy Kupper, a public affairs specialist for the service. “This trend is resulting in the need to explore new strategies to protect natural and cultural resources and provide opportunities for safe and meaningful visitor experiences.”

It can be confusing.

New to implementing timed-entry reservations for vehicles is Mount Rainier National Park , in Washington, for its popular Paradise and Sunrise Corridors during certain times in the summer season. Reservations cost $2, are valid for one day and must be purchased along with the park ticket, but do not apply for visitors with wilderness permits or camping or lodge reservations. Similar vehicle reservations are now required for certain periods for viewing the sunrise at Haleakalā National Park in Maui, Hawaii , and driving the Cadillac Summit Road in Maine’s Acadia National Park .

Visitors wishing to hike Old Rag Mountain in Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park must obtain a day-use ticket between March 1 and Nov. 30, and in Zion National Park, in Utah, hikers wishing to visit Angels Landing , the dramatic 1,488-foot-tall rock formation, also need to purchase a permit. Fees range from $1 to $6, in addition to the parks’ entrance fees.

As each destination is managed differently, check the park’s webpage for the type of reservation required. Although most bookings can be made through Recreation.gov, some sites, such as Muir Woods National Monument, use a different system.

New features on Recreation.gov

In 2023, Recreation.gov reported that more than 4 million camping reservations and 2 million timed-entry reservations were booked online, and 1.5 million permits were issued. Some 2.9 million new users signed up for the site. With its expanding user base, the booking platform has added 58 reservable national park locations — including 17 campgrounds — such as Central Avenue Walk-in Sites at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Bluff Hike In Camping in South Carolina’s Congaree National Park.

Recreation.gov has also improved an alerts feature, piloted in July 2023, that can notify users through email or mobile push notifications when a sold-out campsite becomes available. After Recreation.gov notifies you of availability, you must book the campsite yourself online — and quickly, as you’ll be shown how many other people (possibly hundreds) have received the same alert.

While its customer support center and mobile app are still only available in English, Recreation.gov recently introduced a Spanish language translation option. The Park Service partners with Latino Conservation Week , which hosts nationwide hikes and events on environmental education and in-park stewardship, and will celebrate its 10th year in September.

A limit to the annual America the Beautiful pass

The 2024 America the Beautiful pass no longer allows two owners. The annual interagency pass, which costs $80 and covers the entrance fees for more than 2,000 federal recreation sites (of which roughly 100 do not charge for admission year-round), is now marked by a single signature line on the back of the card. The pass owner must show I.D. and be present with any accompanying travelers wishing to access the park with the pass. (Annual passes issued in 2023 will still be valid until their expiration date.) The pass covers all passengers in a vehicle — up to four adults, and children under 16 are admitted free — or up to four cyclists riding together. Active military or veterans and people with permanent disabilities are eligible for a free lifetime pass; 4th grade students may receive a free annual pass; and senior citizens may purchase a $20 annual pass or pay $80 for a lifetime pass.

At the parks, more accessible features, E.V. chargers and new lodging

To better protect against global warming, the Park Service is putting more than $65 million from the Inflation Reduction Act and Great American Outdoors Act into climate mitigation and ecosystem restoration.

Using $15.9 million budgeted for zero-emission vehicle deployment, charging capacity and infrastructure, the Park Service is prioritizing a reduction in carbon emissions, said Mr. Sams, by installing new electric-vehicle charging stations and running electric buses.

An interactive online locator tool created in 2023 shows E.V. charging stations throughout 27 national parks and the type of chargers available. In addition to the tool, every national park page displays alerts on road closures, parking lot capacities, construction work and other incidents.

Mr. Sams also said the Park Service is investing $1.3 billion from the Great American Outdoors Act to improve accessibility features, ranging from a new A.D.A.-compliant visitor center at Morristown National Historic Park in New Jersey to new beach wheelchairs at Sleeping Bear Dunes , Channel Islands and Virgin Islands National Parks . Each destination’s website has an accessibility tab to help visitors plan their trip, and Recreation.gov now has a search filter on its homepage to make it easier to locate accessible accommodations.

New lodging options now available across the country include the Flamingo Lodge , which opened inside Everglades National Park last fall with 24 guest rooms built from repurposed shipping containers. In March, along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cataloochee Ranch reopened with 11 renovated cabins and a new restaurant. This spring, the Clubhouse Hotel & Suites will welcome its first guests in Rapid City, S.D., the closest major town to Badlands National Park , and opening in May in Idaho is the Yellowstone Peaks Hotel , a 30-minute-drive from Yellowstone National Park. This fall, California-bound travelers planning a visit to General Sherman, the largest known tree on Earth, might book at AutoCamp Sequoia , just outside Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park .

Also in California: Those who don’t score a highly coveted (and contentious) spot at the newly reopened High Sierra Camps in Yosemite could book Wildhaven Yosemite in Mariposa, which offers more affordable rates, hiking trails and views of the Sierra Nevadas. Reservations for its first season are available beginning May 1.

Celebrating milestones and a new free entrance day

On the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, visitors can pay tribute to African American heritage at over 100 parks , including the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument , and the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail . This year also marks 100 years since Indigenous people were recognized as United States citizens. Although many parks have Indigenous programming , Mr. Sams, who is the first Native American to serve as N.P.S. director , suggested visiting Hopewell Cultural Historical Park in Ohio and Whitman Mission Historic National Historic Site in Washington, where he recently brought his daughter.

“In order to celebrate the diversity that makes our country great, we must share the complete story of America, which includes both the successes and challenges encountered on the way to form a more perfect union,” Mr. Sams said.

Juneteenth National Independence Day is the National Park Service’s newest free entrance day . Visitors can also take advantage of free admission on April 20, the first day of National Park Week; Aug. 4, the four-year anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act ; Sept. 28 on National Public Lands Day ; and Nov. 11 for Veterans Day .
