Tour de force is French for feat of strength . In English, we use it to describe a particularly impressive display of skill and effort. The phrase came to English in the early 19th century, and it has become increasingly common ever since. Today, we use it not only as a noun phrase but also as a phrasal adjective.

There is no reason to hyphenate tour de force when it’s a noun phrase (e.g., her performance was a tour de force ), but hyphenating it makes sense when it’s a phrasal adjective ( she gave a tour-de-force performance ). But it often goes unhyphenated even as a phrasal adjective.

We tend to italicize words and phrases from other languages when they are new to English, but tour de force is no longer new, so there’s no need to italicize it in normal use. But because tour and force are English words, some publications still italicize it to avoid confusion.

In French, the plural of tour de force is tours de force . In English, both tours de force and tour de forces are used (the former about twice as often as the latter).

Lord Byron thought proper, as a sort of tour de force , to versify, in his Don Juan, passages taken from prose works. [ Fraser’s Magazine for Town and Country (1839) ] To pass this examination is a tour de force of which very few men are capable, owing to the general inability of the average mortal to take in abstract conceptions. [ Music: a monthly magazine … (1895) ] At the same time, the trans-Atlantic flight is still a tour de force, as it will possibly be a very long time before we can hope to see an America-to-Ireland service. [ New York Times (1919) ] It was an organizational tour de force. The French overlooked nothing, except the spirit of the Olympics with its emphasis on brotherhood and fellowship. [ Calgary Herald (1968) ] Despite his late dismissal, Ponting allowed himself a touch of satisfaction as he looked back on his tour-de-force innings. [ Daily Mail (2005) ] Nigel Hawthorne, best known as Sir Humphrey Appleby, delivers a tour de force performance as the king. [ The Australian (2012) ]

Word of the Day

Word of the day, tour de force.

a feat requiring unusual strength, skill, or ingenuity.

More about tour de force

Tour de force “a feat requiring unusual strength, skill, or ingenuity” is a borrowing from French, in which the phrase literally means “turn of strength.” French tour has two separate derivations: the noun tour “a turn” in tour de force is related to the verb tourner “to turn” (from Latin tornāre ), and this tour is not to be confused with tour “tower” (from Latin turris ). This distinction is why the Tour de France refers to a long, winding bicycle race while the tour Eiffel is the original French name for the Eiffel Tower. Other derivatives of Latin tornāre “to turn” include return , tourniquet , tourist , and tornado . Tour de force was first recorded in English circa the year 1800.

how is tour de force used?

“The idea that nature is not bound by the artificial boundaries that we assign to physics, chemistry, biology or mathematics has been around a long time,” said astrophysicist Mayank Vahia …. He said the Nobel prize in physiology and medicine shared by Jim Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, for instance, for unraveling the double helix structure of DNA, might not have been won but for the technical (read physical) tour de force of X-ray diffraction studies achieved by Rosalind Franklin and her colleagues.

A tour de force from 1938, by the German-born Argentine Annemarie Heinrich in league with her sister Ursula, finds the two reflected in a mirrored orb. In the background—from our point of view—Annemarie grins as she snaps the shutter of a standing camera; Ursula looms gigantically and wildly distorted as she leans forward to grasp the sphere. It takes time, enjoyably, to puzzle out the picture’s vertiginous structure.

the arc of the horizon measured clockwise from the south point, in astronomy, or from the north point, in navigation, to the point where a vertical circle through a given heavenly body intersects the horizon.

More about azimuth

Azimuth “the arc of the horizon measured clockwise” derives by way of Middle French azimut from Arabic as-sumūt “the ways,” an assimilated plural form of al-samt “the way.” As we learned from the recent   Word of the Day acequia , the prefix al- “the” assimilates to match the first sound in the word that follows—but only when that sound is pronounced with the tip of the tongue. Azimuth shares an origin with zenith “the point on the celestial sphere vertically above a given position,” but while azimuth closely resembles its Arabic source, zenith arose when Arabic samt was borrowed into Old Spanish as zemt and was subsequently misread as zenit . We never know when a small scribal error can end up creating a new word! Azimuth was first recorded in English in the late 14th century.

how is azimuth used?

While we say that the sun sets in the west, most times that’s not exactly the case …. [B]etween the first day of spring and the first day of autumn, the position on the horizon where the sun appears to set, known as the azimuth , actually occurs somewhat north of due west. The azimuth of the sunset slowly shifts northward until the day of the June solstice; thereafter, it reverses course and shifts back to the south. On June 21, the sun sets at an azimuth of 302 degrees, or 32 degrees north of due west. But for the setting sun to be seen from all of Manhattan’s cross streets, its azimuth must be 299 degrees, or 29 degrees north of due west.

an act or instance of fighting a shadow or an imaginary enemy.

More about sciamachy

Sciamachy “an act of fighting a shadow” is adapted from Ancient Greek skiamachía , equivalent to skiá “shadow” and máchē “battle.” Skiá is sometimes romanized as scia- , consistent with the Latin trend of changing Greek kappa to Roman c , but other derivatives of skiá in English hew closely to the original spelling and appear as skia- , as in skiagraph “a photographic image produced by the action of x-rays or nuclear radiation.” Máchē is a popular element in technical terms related to fighting or warfare. When combined with taûros “bull,” we get tauromachy “bullfighting,” and when combined with lógos “word,” we get logomachy “a dispute about or concerning words.” Sciamachy was first recorded in English circa 1620.

how is sciamachy used?

As farewells were played, Order became disorder And sciamachy took root. In the dark place, where mirrors Refracted black light Breathing became ragged. … And, I, cannot now Recognise a face. There is but a record Of a dark place.

Aru is indulging in sciamachy . She has the frustrated look of a person combating a shadow, a shadow that absorbs her anger and gives her nothing in return. As for me, it was not only her questions that daunted me, it was her look as well, the clear-eyed, judging gaze…

A New Tour de Force Documentary Shows Roger Federer as You’ve Never Seen Him

By Corey Seymour

Every tennis fan in the world remembers the day, two years ago, when Roger Federer announced his forthcoming retirement—after two decades, 1,500 matches, and 20 Grand Slam titles—from the game he mastered. The genius of the documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days , which has its world premiere tonight at the Tribeca Film Festival, is that it almost entirely limits its focus to the period between this announcement and his final match, as part of the Laver Cup in London , less than two weeks later.

Meanwhile, the strength of the film—like so many contemporary documentaries—ultimately comes down to one word: access. Twelve Final Days began as a home-video project never intended for public viewing, and as such, the filmmakers Asif Kapadia (director of the acclaimed documentaries Amy , about Amy Winehouse, and Senna , about the late Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna, among others) and Joe Sabia (you likely know him as the creator and voice of Vogue’s 73 Questions video series) have seemingly limitless entrée to Federer’s world. We see him in private moments of quiet (and quite emotional) reflection; we’re in his home and hotel suites with him and his wife, Mirka, their three children, and Federer’s father and mother; we’re backstage in the locker room at the O2 Arena as he thanks his friends and fellow legends; and we witness no shortage of tears.

After the briefest montage of video highlights—the sort of slow-motion meditation on form and grace that Federer’s game seems almost made for— Twelve Final Days starts with Federer trying to prepare himself to read his retirement announcement. “Hopefully I will not be using those tissues,” he says, and he mostly succeeds—though the announcement itself seems to accelerate Federer’s emotional reckoning. (Oddly, it’s the finale to this announcement—largely overlooked, for good reason, in real time, as the retirement news got all the headlines—that resonated as I watched it again with the distance of a couple of years: “Finally, to the game of tennis,” he said. “I love you and will never leave you.” For the player who, perhaps more than any other athlete in that game, defined a kind of perfection within it, it’s remarkably moving to hear Federer address tennis itself with such obvious devotion.)

The rest of the film is devoted to both the practical matters of retiring—Federer calls and texts friends with the news and fields their responses; he meets with his agent, Tony Godsick, and various friends who advise him and help him with the details of the next days—and his nearly constant reckoning with the emotions conjured up by his decision. Amidst all this, he explains the knee injuries and surgeries that led up to it and reflects on his career, his titles and records, and his rivals. We hear John McEnroe toast Federer as “a Baryshnikov of the tennis court” and—perhaps most surprisingly—we hear Federer talk about a time in his career when some people wondered, because of this oft-stated elegance on the court, “Why wouldn’t I fight more when losing?” The question dovetails with the emergence of the brash tennis warrior Novak Djokovic as a major rival of Federer’s on the sport’s biggest stages, and it clearly animates Federer, who asks, rhetorically: “Did I have to grunt more, shout, sweat? I tried, but it was all an act. That wasn’t my personality.”

What was his personality, then? It’s often lost amidst all the talk of grace and form just how lethal he was on the court, and perhaps the most revealing part of Twelve Final Days is hearing Federer discuss what we might call his philosophy of winning tennis: “I would take a lot of joy in trying to beat my opponent at his game,” he says. “If he liked to play long rallies? Okay, let’s play long rallies—I’ll beat you at that, and then you have nothing else. If he liked to come to the net? I’ll also do that, and I’ll beat you at that too.”

The arrival of Rafael Nadal 46 minutes into the film marks its movement into the final aria of Federer’s career. No other player challenged him as consistently, or for as long, as Nadal, and no other player became so close to him personally. The affection between the two is tangible throughout. (It was Nadal, alone among players, whom Federer told about his retirement 10 days before anybody else outside his family and management.) Federer calls Nadal’s ascendance in the game “a bit of a mind bender” that, at first, wasn’t entirely welcome: “I liked being at the top alone,” he adds. Nadal, in turn, simply says that “the most important player in my career…is leaving,” and it’s clear on his face and in his eyes that the notion of Federer’s absence has forced a kind of reckoning of his own.

Image may contain Roger Federer Rafael Nadal Andy Murray Clothing Formal Wear Suit Photography Accessories and Tie

There are some lovely, lighthearted moments among Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, and Andy Murray as they gather in London to prepare for the Laver Cup matches: at dinners (with legends like Björn Borg weighing in on everything), on boat rides, playing ping-pong in tuxedos (as one does), and generally hanging out with the kind of casual ease—tempered by respect for the occasion—that only legendary athletes seem capable of. (“I’ve had all day to think about my first return being a shank,” Federer jokes in the locker room, trying to shake off some understandable butterflies before his final match.)

Again, the tennis obsessives among us will never forget the images we saw from the Laver Cup at the O2—of Federer and Nadal struggling to contain their emotions, sitting next to one another on a bench at the side of the court, holding hands, lips quivering, tears streaming down their faces—and their emotional on-court farewell is the beating heart at the center of this film. But we also see what nobody outside of their circle has ever seen before: Federer walking back into the locker room after their final doubles match to find Nadal still sobbing, a towel hiding his face. The two share another embrace before Nadal wills himself into an emotional gearchange, shouting, “Okay, done!”

“At the end,” Federer reflects, “it was just, Okay, this is it—you know, what happens next?” And while the film doesn’t allow itself to speculate about the legend’s next move, outside of spending more time with his family, it’s stronger for it. We’re left with Federer’s final words, looking back at the entirety of his unforgettable career: “It’s been a perfect journey,” he says. “I’d do it all over again.”

Federer: Twelve Final Days streams on Prime Video from June 20.

Ethan Page takes a shot at AEW in his tour de force contract signing with NXT

Ethan Pages doesn't want to sit at home.

Matty Breisch

After two hours of anticipation, Ethan Page and Ava finally took to the ring in the final segment of NXT to make things official and add “All Ego” to the WWE Universe.

While Ava was less than excited about the prospects of agreeing to Page's demands, “All Ego” assured her that the situation was perfectly fine, as, in his opinion, he's actually doing her a favor .

“No, no, no, no, no, honestly, listen, Ava – I'm sorry, did you get invited out here to sign a contract with NXT? So how about you shut the h*ll up! – but Ava, I want to thank you because this whole thing but you have to understand one thing, you're going to have to get used to this whole ‘Ethan Page calling the shots' thing because if, and that's a huge if, I sign this contract, I'm going to get a lot of perks that nobody else in the locker room is going to get and I don't think they're going to like that very much. I don't think you're going to like that very much, but I don't really give a d**n because I earned that, okay? Because I'm tired of waiting and sitting around for these opportunities, now I'm going to take them. Sure, you're a little frustrated but you should have a huge smile on your face because you're about to sign the wrestler with the biggest upside in professional wrestling.”

While Ava protested, Page shot back, letting her know that he's completely focused on getting where he needs to be, in the spotlight, which is good, because NXT is currently in need of a high-end talent after losing over half a dozen stars in the WWE Draft.

“Oh no, you are signing, and you're signing this contract on live TV tonight because you need to sign Ethan Page. Hold on, listen, everybody here knows, everybody watched the draft, NXT lost what, eight of its top stars, leaving a huge hole perfectly sized for Ethan Page to fill and become the face of NXT and to take this brand to new heights and to our new home. But, do you know what? I am here for the opportunity; I understand that there's a lot of money in this contract, but to be honest with you, I could have sat my a** at home for two years and collected a check, but I ain't about that. Ethan Page wants the opportunity because I hear in NXT talent grants opportunities, and I know when you look at me, Ava, you might hate me with every ounce of you, but you know I'm talented; you know I'm a Megastar. But more importantly, you know that I earn, and I have earned the ego that I have because so far in the ring tonight, I haven't said anything that's an opinion; no, I'm only spitting facts.”

Whoa, sick AEW burns, right? Page was desperate to do things in AEW only to be relegated to a program with Tony Nese on Ring of Honor. Still, in the end, what's done is done, and now “All Ego” is a member of WWE, assuming Ava signed the contract, which Trick Williams really wanted to happen so that they could mix it up in the ring officially.

Trick Williams wants Ethan Page at NXT Battleground .

After watching Trick Williams make his entrance, Ethan Page threw the table out of the ring in order to ensure that no one was going to take a tumble during the segment. Fortunately for Page, that wasn't Trick Willie's goal, as he instead simply wanted to make things official ahead of NXT Battleground .

“So let's get down to business then: Ava, please give this man Ethan Page whatever he wants so Trick Williams and everyone else in this building can get what we want, and that's for me to whoop your a**. You see, Ethan, I know that you're new here, so let Trick Williams help you out and tell you how things go; you listen to me, I'll tell you how things go, I'm Trick Williams, and this is my house. I've been here for a little minute now, since 2.0 to be exact; I've got a few boys in the back who've been here with me the whole time, and this crow here, they've been with me the whole time too. Through the ups, through the downs, and everything in between, they've been here,” Trick Williams noted.

“See my problem with you is you think you can just come here, into my house, my home, jump the line, and jump me, the NXT Champion? You must be crazy. So this is how we're gonna do it; I'm gonna make an example out of you, Ethan, for every other man in every other business around the world who think he can find his way to NXT and find a title opportunity. Because of you, I'm going to take you out. Ethan, let me make this crystal clear, clean out your ears so you can hear what Trick Williams is telling you man to man…”

Before he could continue, Page jumped into the conversation, revealing to Williams that they are far more like than he might know.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, you're stepping a little too close there, I think you need to chill out. I said we're doing business, okay, calm down. But I understand, I understand why you're so emotional and angry because you have every right to be: the last time we crossed paths I knocked you into Lash, I grabbed that title, held it up for the world to see, it was a whole thing, you have every right to be p*ssed off,” Page declared.

“But listen closely, Trick, you and I, whether you like it or not, have a lot more in common than you might think; oh I've been watching, I saw you with Carmelo Hayes; I saw the spotlight on him, and you in his shadow and I've been in that position a hundred times over in my career. The only difference is, I wasn't able to do what you did and I respect you for that; you broke out. You took that spotlight and put it where you wanted it, on you, and now you are the NXT Champion but listen to me, Trick, with that title comes the responsibility of that giant a** bullseye on your back, and more importantly, it comes with the spotlight that Ethan Page, oh, I crave that spotlight. So it was noting personal when I attacked you, no it was me, making an opportunity for me, so Ava, I think I'm ready to sign that contract.”

While Ava still wasn't sold, in the end, she signed the contract after Page, and it became officially official, with “All Ego” set to wrestle Trick Willie at Battleground . Will the former AEW/TNA/ROH star be able to overcome the odds to become a singles champion in a major promotion for the first time in his 17-year wrestling career? Only time will tell, but after exclusively challenging known quantities in NXT so far, Williams will face someone like he's never wrestled before in Las Vegas: a performer desperate to prove what he can do on the game's grandest stages.

Episode 8 - Maria Macsay | Embodied living Persona Podcast

  • Personal Journals

"You know its just your Foolish Pride." Episode 8 with the uber Mighty Maria Macsay was a tour de force of self reflection. Maria is the definition of a free spirit, and not in a generic overused fashion of the term. She specializes in Somatics coaching and embarks with her clients on the beauty of spirituality through avenues like yoga amongst others. She is also the cofounder of Align & Allow Retreats, a globally recognized women's empowerment mission retreat dedicated to elevating the embodied rise of women worldwide. My conversation with her was enlightening to how my foolish pride has in key instances gotten in the way of self progress and growth. We delved into matters of spirituality and shared stories of how we are all capable of "losing our s#it". As long as we learn from them and gain clarity as to what was the real reason for our mind, body, and souls being misaligned, that is growth, Maria is a badass Chica and how she shares her story with me makes me hopeful for the chapters that are to come for all of us on this spinning rock in space. The world is far from perfect, perhaps a belief it one day will be is dimwitted, but with self reflection and conversations like this we can learn from each other and grow as humans. It is truly a privlege that I share with you Episode Ocho of the Persona Podcast. Enjoy ladies and germs. Dr John Blakey is the author of 'The Trusted Executive' and Founder of The Trusted Executive .

In my new book, Force for Good: How to Thrive as a Purpose-Driven Leader , I pose the question, "What do you want to say in your 80th birthday speech? How would you describe your impact if you reached that worthy milestone and then looked back on your life?" I doubt you will wish you had spent more time in the office. You might want to say that you had seen more of the world, that your life had been full of more inspiring relationships or that you created financial security for your family.

If you are a purpose-driven leader, I hope you would also want to say that your leadership has been a force for good and that you thrived as a purpose-driven leader. But could you raise your sights higher? In that 80th birthday speech, could you say that you were not only a force for good but you were also a force multiplier? In other words, that you inspired other leaders to become a force for good? Wouldn’t that be a fantastic résumé? Wouldn’t that be a life of significance as well as a life of success?

You might be thinking, "That sounds a bit ambitious, John. How would I ever get from where I am today to be a force multiplier?" I understand your reservations, but also remember that most people overestimate what they can achieve in one year and underestimate what they can achieve in 10 years. With this in mind, I invite you to set an inspiring and believable five- and 10-year vision to become a force multiplier, because anything is possible if you put your mind to it over 10 years. Can a five-year-old imagine what they might be doing as a fifteen-year-old? Of course not. So how can you imagine what you might be doing in 10 years, given the pace of change in the world? This is a good thing, because it means that the future is open. It isn’t what it used to be. It is up for grabs.

Some years ago, a speaker I know, Dr. David Hall, came to talk on creativity to one of my CEO peer groups. He said to us, "Most of you are slowly bleeding to death in the world of ‘what is’ rather than contemplating the exploding possibilities of the world of ‘what might be.’" He challenged us to set transformative goals that would make our heads hurt and our hearts sing. "Don’t worry about the how; focus on the wow," he declared as we desperately stretched out of our comfort zones to contemplate game-changing, long-term goals.

I adopt the same approach when working with my coaching clients. With one high-profile sporting coach, I asked him to send me his goals before our first coaching session. When I read them, I felt underwhelmed. When we met, I took a deep breath and said, "These goals don’t really do it for me. You’re one of the most successful sports coaches of your generation. The sky is the limit, so why would you want to limit your potential in this way?" There was a long silence and a penetrating stare from my affronted client. But I am pleased to say that they redrafted their goals to create the "wow" factor and, some months later, also achieved a dream appointment in a national coaching role.

As the saying goes, "Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." What bolder goal could there be for a purpose-driven leader than to set a five- and 10-year vision to become a force multiplier? Furthermore, how will we solve the challenges we have in this world without people like you setting goals like these? Becoming a force multiplier is where our heart’s most exciting passions meet the world’s deepest hunger.

What do force multipliers do? Some become network leaders. Some write books. Some become philanthropists. Some become mentors and coaches to others. It depends on your gifts. The same gifts that help you thrive as a purpose-driven leader in the short term can be developed and extrapolated to enable you to become a force multiplier in the long term. I firmly believe there is a force multiplier in all of us, but the exact form it takes will vary from person to person.

What is the superpower that could enable you to become a force multiplier as well as a force for good in your leadership?
