Connecting Across Cultures

Postcards from Stef: Connecting Across Cultures

Thanks so much for stopping by! As you’ve probably noticed, I love to travel. While travel is amazing for so many reasons, what I love most about it is connecting with people around the world and realizing that we have more in common than not . Hence, the theme of my blog: “Connecting Across Cultures.”

I hope you’ll follow along on these jaunts and journeys, where travel is the best education , and the interactions we share are the ultimate souvenir. Sometimes lessons from the road are fun, at times funny, sometimes frustrating, often inspirational, but always worthwhile!

“The journey of a 1000 miles begins with a single step.” –Chinese Proverb”

your trip by stef

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” –Mark Twain

About Stef (the short story!)

“Thanks a lot, Dad!”

I caught the travel bug early on, thanks to my parents , and in particular, thanks to my dad’s job. Because of his career, we moved every couple of years growing up, so — all before the age of eighteen — I got to call these wonderful places home:

• Germany: Munich • Greece: Athens • Israel: Caesarea (attended school in Tel Aviv) • South Korea: Busan, Seoul, and Daegu • United States: Arizona and Hawaii (the Garden Island, Kauai)

After experiencing all of those amazing places first hand, I was hooked. I had contracted the incurable: the travel bug.

About Stef (the longer story!)

Q: “And what do you want to be when you grow up?”  A: “A traveler, of course.”

As a young adult, I knew that I wanted to travel more than anything else. But I had no idea how . I could hardly afford a ticket to the next state, much less an around-the-world ticket. How was I going to accomplish such a seemingly impossible feat?

As it turns out, that’s the problem I’ve spent my adult life trying to solve — and it’s still a work in progress. Here’s a rundown of how things went:

Making Pizzas

After high school, I had no idea what I should be doing as a so-called adult. I enrolled in the local community college in Prescott, Arizona, but soon dropped out after having attended just one class. I worked full-time at a local pizza place and dreamed about travel. Eventually I managed to scrounge up enough for a trip via Greyhound bus to New Orleans, Louisiana, to experience Mardi Gras first hand.

New Orleans was, and is, a unique feast for the senses. Culturally. Architecturally. Musically. It gives one the sense of having traveled abroad without actually leaving the United States. That trip only served to whet my appetite for more.

Cross-Country Road Trip

I kept making and serving pizza, and burning my arm on that dang pizza oven . Throughout the following year I saved and brewed plans for the next big adventure: a road trip across the United States. A friend and I had managed to get hired on as camp counselors for the summer at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.

“What better way to get there than to drive?” I thought.

Riding off into the unknown along US interstates in my little silvery-purple pickup truck, I felt the exhilarating freedom of being on the road of possibility and exploration.

Wheeeeeeeeee!

From Prescott Valley, Arizona, we headed off to Interlochen, Michigan, with stops along the way in Dallas, New Orleans, Virginia Beach, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Washington D.C., and Niagara Falls.

Once our camp-counselor gig in Michigan came to an end, we stopped in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and continued West to Portland, Oregon. There I said goodbye to my partner in crime as she flew back home to Phoenix. I drove north to explore a tad more.

That epic summer adventure finally came to an end in Seattle, Washington. My pickup truck had covered over 6000 miles through twenty-four states in about three months.

It was a memorable coming-of-age summer that — instead of quenching — only served to stoke the flames of my wanderlust.

Broke Without a Plan

Once I arrived in Seattle, I realized with horror that I had no more money; and furthermore, that I had no plan for what on earth I was supposed to do next. Much like your average twenty-year-old, I had not thought things out that far ahead. Not at all.

What on earth was I going to do?

As any self-respecting twenty-year old might do, I called Mom and Dad.

Thankfully, they came to my rescue. Dad’s from Hawaii, and that’s where they happened to be living at the time. They had my truck shipped from Seattle to Kauai and bought my plane ticket over as well. I was extremely thankful. In fact, whenever I think back on that time, I am grateful to them all over again.

Kauai Bound

With that twist of events, I moved back home.

I spent the next year on Kauai juggling several jobs: pizza-delivery girl at Domino’s, “sales-associate” at K-Mart (that’s just a fancy term for cashier), and security guard at Royal Guard Security. Yep, I once was a professional security guard.

What should I do “when I grow up?” — I still had no idea! So I just focused on taking things a day at a time. Dad thought my future would be sorted by joining the Air Force. My heart wasn’t in it, but for lack of a better idea I gave the recruiter a call.

That didn’t work out and is a story for another day, but suffice it to say that today the pacifist in me is extremely thankful for how it all unfolded.

Off to Europe Again

Keep on Travelin'

At the ripe young age of twenty-one, I flew to Frankfurt and spent six months taking intensive-language classes in Wiesbaden and in Limburg an der Lahn. I stayed with family that was kind enough to take me in. I lived meagerly on a very tiny budget, but I was learning so much: about the language, the culture, and about growing up.

The College Years

At twenty-two, after having reached intermediate German proficiency at the language schools, I took out student loans and spent my next four years studying abroad in Germany. Mostly, I spent that time at the University of Maryland University College campus that once thrived in the cute little town of Schwäbisch Gmünd. But I also spent one semester studying at the Julius Maximilian University of Würzburg.

Before finishing college, I was hired for a summer job on cruise ships as Junior Activities Coordinator. In anticipation of that new challenge at sea, my stomach cramped, twisted, and turned — worse than any seasickness. I was both scared to death and excited as heck!

A Sailor’s Life for Me

In 2000, I joined Cunard Line’s Caronia and as Junior Activities Co-ordinator. I organized all the activities for young passengers: kids and teens. During that first summer at sea I was ecstatic to be able to visit a dozen European countries during my two months on board. From Arctic waters to the Baltic Sea, from the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean, it was quite literally a voyage of discovery.

Yet again, I was hooked.

After graduating with a BA in Psychology and in German Language & Literature, I headed straight back to ship life. (With a quick interlude of summer school at the University of Hawaii Honolulu campus, where I drudged through a statistics class to meet degree requirements. And said hi to mom and dad!)

Sea ho! A sailor’s life for me! What was meant to be just a few months at sea after college turned into seven years, during which I was able to visit 70-plus countries on six continents.

And sail around the world.

Five times.

Rejoining the Landlubbers

Eventually it came time to settle back down on land. At the end of 2009 I moved to the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where I now live in the cozy town of Edmonds, just north of Seattle.

Currently, I work as a Travel Advisor , Tour Assistant, and Speaker at Rick Steves’ Europe, with many wonderful and adventurous like-minded travelphiles. I feel very fortunate to be able to talk travel for a living and help others who are also dreaming of and/or embarking on adventures of a lifetime!

My hope is to continue that people-to-people connection I love so much via this travel blog. I’d be so pleased if you’d join me!

13 Clever Ways to Ask: How Was Your Trip?

Traveling is one of our favorite things to talk about.  In fact, we always find ourselves asking others about recent trips and often get the best tips from those who experienced a location or destination first hand.  In this post, we’ll share with you our 13 clever ways to expand on the popular question “How was your trip”, to learn more about someone’s recent travel adventure.

How was your trip?

“How was your trip” – The go-to question to kick off a travel conversation.  We are very intrigued to learn about new locations as well as listening to someone else’s opinion of a location we’ve already been.  Here’s the quick list of our 13 go to questions we ask to dive deeper into the How was your trip, conversation.

  • How is the culture?
  • Are the locals friendly?
  • How is the food?
  • Is it packed with tourists?
  • Is it expensive?
  • What currency is used? Is credit and debit cards accepted?
  • Did you get good weather?
  • Is the location heavily dependent on seasons?
  • How did you get there?  How was the flight, what route did you take?
  • Did you use public transportation?
  • Did you learn anything new?
  • Would you recommend it?
  • Would you go again?

How Was Your Trip - Cultural Questions

How is the culture.

This question is more specific for international travel, however, there are plenty of cultures within the United States depending on which region you visit.  We love to ask about the culture to get an idea of what to expect.  However this is completely subjective so if someone has a bad experience at a particular location, it does not mean you will!

Asking if the locals are friendly ties closely to the question about the culture.  However if you can get a gauge on whether the locals are friendly that will provide insight if a location is welcoming to tourists!

We found throughout our travels that Denmark (Copenhagen in particular) are some of the friendliest locals we’ve ever met.  But this is just from our experience!

Are you a foodie?  If so then this is likely your go to follow up question after “How was your trip?”!  Many locations have at least one or two food meals or snacks that originated there and are must tries!  One of our favorite local meals is a Belgium Waffle, which we had when we visited Brussels, Belgium .

Below is a picture of a local meal from a recent trip visiting Finland.

How was your trip - asking how was the food is a great way to expand on how was your trip

Many popular locations can be jammed pack with tourists.  For example, when we were in Switzerland, we visited a lot of the mountain tops in the Swiss Alps.  For one of the mountains we visited, the Top of Europe (Jungfraujoch), there was a massive group of tourists that took over the entire place!  Most of the time we like to avoid group tours so we often find ourselves asking this question and we will visit a place during off-peak hours to avoid the crowds.

How Was Your Trip - Money Questions

This is a general question but you will quickly get a gauge on how expensive a particular location is.  Sometimes food is really expensive, but hospitality is relatively cheap and vice versa.  Sometimes, everything is expensive, like Switzerland (HOLY SMOKES!).

How was your trip - was it expensive?

We found that the Switzerland is the most expensive country we have visited so far, but Western Europe and Scandinavia are pretty expensive comparable to the coastal cities in the United States.

Southeast Asia is by far the cheapest location we’ve ever visited.

Another question that applies for more international travel.  What currency do they use and whether or not they accept credit or debit cards.  The latter part of this question is a game changer for us.  We always try to pay with credit cards whenever possible to get the best exchange rates while traveling, avoid foreign exchange fees, and to accumulate points and miles for future travels.

How Was Your Trip - Weather Questions

The weather is one of the most critical things that can make or break a trip.  Diving deeper into the conversation with did you get good weather can lead to learning more if the success of a trip is dependent on the weather.  For example if someone is traveling to a beach location and it rained the entire time, their trip may not be as enjoyable as if it was sun shine and rainbows.

Understanding if a particular location is dependent on seasons is good insight for future travel.  For example, we live in a coastal city in New Jersey close to Atlantic City.  Other than Atlantic City, the Jersey Shore pretty much shuts down after Labor Day until Memorial Day every year so you want to keep that in mind if you want to get your typical Jersey Shore vacation.

Below are a few of our favorite post on things to do near the Jersey Shore:

Best Things to do in Atlantic City in the Summer. What to do. Where to eat. What to see. Thunder over the Boardwalk. Bally's Beach Bar. Bungalow Beach Bar. The Beach Bar at Hard Rock. LandShark Bar & Grill. Go to the beach. Swim in the hotel pool. H20 Pool. HQ2 Beachclub.

How Was Your Trip - Transportation Questions

How did you get there - how was your flight.

I am always interested in the mode of transportation one took to get to a particular destination.  If someone decides to drive, fly, take a cruise, or train, it’s always interesting learning why they chose the transportation method.

For someone flying, you can often ask what route they took and if there’s a non-stop direct flight option.  I am a bit of a flight geek so this sparks my interest.

How was your trip what - how did you get there is a great question to ask

Once one gets to a location they often have to get from point A to point B.  Depending on the location will dictate whether or not you chose public transportation or use a rental car.

We often find ourselves searching the best way to get to and from an airport before we takeoff so we’re not scrambling once we land.  If we’re visiting a city then we will likely use public transportation, trains, buses, or uber.  In a more rural location we often opt to rent a car that way we can travel at our pace.

How Was Your Trip - Recommendation Questions

Taylor and I always try to learn something new about a particular trip, whether that’s something historical, something about the culture, food, or really anything.

When talking about one’s trip, ask if they learned anything new, I bet you they did!

Do you recommend it?

We love asking if people recommend a particular destination.   I can honestly say I’d recommend just about every place we ever visited because there’s a unique thing to do in each location.

This is a great question to ask to see if people enjoyed their trip when asking folks, “how was your trip”.

“Would you go again” is the ultimate question to find out if someone absolutely loved a location.  We are constantly trying to visit new locations since there are just so many amazing places here on planet earth so if we say we will visit a place again, we really really love it!  Now we understand, not everyone is like us and may not want to visit as many places as we do but the general census is if you want to go back to a location, you definitely like it.

For example, if you’re like my dad, you will make your way to the same spot every year, like Key West, FL (I think it’s his favorite place on earth).

How was your trip - 13 ways to ask how was your trip

Overall we hope this post encourages you to talk more about travel and experiencing new places!  If you have any other suggestions on great questions to ask to expand the conversation of How was your trip, please let us know!  Again here’s the quick list of 13 different questions to expand on the question, How was your trip?

With the right prompts, ChatGPT can help you with your vacation planning.

Daniel Levine, a keynote speaker specializing in tourism trends , is among the many travelers who have been experimenting with ChatGPT for travel planning.

In his experience, he says, generative AI tools tend to do best when it comes to information that’s fairly static, like sightseeing: He recently asked an AI chatbot to plan a seven-day itinerary for a drive down the coast of Chile, and it produced a good starting point for an itinerary. On another trip, AI also revealed a little-known Terminal Transfer Bus that saved him time at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport.

When it comes to planning a vacation, nothing beats a custom recommendation from a fellow traveler who's already explored the area or a travel agent with deep knowledge of the locale. There’s a human touch that comes with making solid recommendations. But for those plotting out itineraries, ChatGPT can be a great starting point for trip planning—that is, if you know how to feed it the correct prompts and you’re patient enough to fact check the intel.

Fourteen percent of American travelers have reported recently using ChatGPT to plan a trip, though about a third plan to enlist the generative AI in the future, according to Longwoods International .

How Accurate Are ChatGPT’s Travel Suggestions?

ChatGPT is still in its early stages, so it's best to fact check some of its suggestions when you ... [+] use it for travel planning.

Netflix’s Best New Show Has A Perfect 100% Critic Score

Are those dragon eggs in ‘house of the dragon’ the ones daenerys has in ‘game of thrones’, northern lights forecast: here’s where you could see the aurora borealis tonight.

But ChatGPT’s travel suggestions often send people to places that don’t exist, fall short of logistical planning, or suggest restaurants and attractions outside of operating hours, according to a study from SEO Travel. For the analysis, the travel site asked ChatGPT to plan 100, two-day weekend itineraries in top destinations.

Anecdotally, those who have queried ChatGPT have experienced some of those hiccups first-hand.

Alice Ford, an adventure filmmaker, travel host and stunt woman who runs the site Alice’s Adventures on Earth , experienced ChatGPT as an experiment for a YouTube video last summer. She was looking for adventurous activities in Los Angeles.

“What I found was that it did give me a few ideas I hadn’t already thought of but then when it comes to finding the real tour operators or adventure guides that was more difficult,” she says. “One of the things it suggested was a seasonal activity that would have been a 5-hour, one-way drive.”

Levine says AI chatbots have been misleading when replying to queries like “list hotels in Tokyo with 2-bedroom suites,” even offering up properties that are closed. “For trip planning it's best to think of ChatGPT as a tool rather than a travel agent, says Levine. “You have to spend time with it to massage its answers.”

5 ChatGPT Prompts To Help Plan Your Vacation

Here’s 5 customizable ChatGPT prompts to help you plan your next trip, with some parameters to help yield the most helpful results:

ChatGPT can create a table of hike suggestions and include considerations such as the distance, ... [+] duration, and elevation change.

1. Recommend a [X-point] walking tour of [X city or neighborhood] within an [x-mile radius]

You can tweak this prompt so that it builds out an itinerary around a spot you're planning to visit first.

2. Make a list of [X] expressions to help navigate [x country]

Use this as a cheat sheet to learn basic expressions in a foreign language.

3. Provide a list of the best [x type of cuisine] in [x city]

Be sure to fact check ChatGPT to verify all of the restaurants are still in business. You can also give it parameters such as “within walking distance of [x destination]

4. What are the top cultural institutions to visit in [x city]

For more niche responses, you can ask about historic cultural institutions, art institutions, etc.

5. Make a table of day hikes in [X destination} and include mileage, elevation change, and time needed.

ChatGPT can also produce tables and you can input information points you want included such as difficulty of the hike, average time it takes to complete it and more. This prompt works great for national parks.

GET LOCAL BREAKING NEWS ALERTS

The latest breaking updates, delivered straight to your email inbox.

Millions of Americans will get in planes, trains and automobiles to travel for the Fourth of July.

"We're hitting a new record with almost 71 million people traveling 50 miles or more from home this holiday week," Central PA AAA spokesperson Doni Lee Spiegel said.

The majority of those travelers will be hitting the road, and the number keeps increasing.

"In 2019, we saw 55.3 million people take a road trip for the Fourth of July holiday. Last year, that was a new record – 57.9 million people traveling. This year we're beating that by an additional 2.8 million drivers on the road," Spiegel said.

Experts said there are things to do to make sure your vehicle is ready for vacation mode.

"Before you leave, check all your fluids. Check your brake fluid. Check your engine oil, for sure," said Zaid Badri, manager at Mavis Discount Tire. "TPMS tire pressure monitor usually comes on if the weather changes. If it drops a couple PSI, the light comes on and a lot of people freak out about it. So, check your air in your tires."

Badri also shared the number one problem he sees coming into the shop during this time of year.

"The thing I've been seeing is people not checking their oil fluid. There's not enough oil in the engine and they come in here and now they're hearing a tapping noise. If you're running very low on oil, it's going to cost you a lot of money," he said.

The best souvenirs are home decor

How to shop smartly while you travel.

Journeying to a new place lets you try on what living in another culture feels and looks like, whether you’re exploring the adobe house-filled streets of Santa Fe or the lantern-lit alleys of an ancient Moroccan city. Many travelers, dazzled by the rug sellers of Istanbul or the pottery workshops of Oaxaca, return with worldly housewares or art to decorate their homes.

“A textile, a clay bowl or an object you pick up at a flea market connects you to a time that you’ve enjoyed, a memory of a place,” says Hilary Robertson , a Brooklyn prop stylist and author of “Nomad at Home: Designing the Home More Traveled .” “If you can’t move to Marrakesh or Kyoto, you can at least recreate something of the feeling.”

But snapping up the best items for your particular home requires a bit of strategy and advance planning. Here’s how to shop smartly, how to get your treasures back in one piece, and what to do with them upon your return.

Do your homework

You usually won’t turn up Indigenous handicrafts or interesting local art at an airport store or the hotel gift shop. “So do research before you go, looking up artisan networks, finding out which days flea markets operate, and figuring out what you might even be able to buy in a given place,” says Rachna Sachasinh, owner of Tikkiwallah , an online shop selling fair-trade Thai and Laotian pillow covers, blankets and other textiles.

Seek tips on what to buy and where to shop from your hotel concierge (or short-term rental owner), and via the websites and social media accounts of official tourism boards. You can also flip through old-school guidebooks (Lonely Planet, Rick Steves), which tend to concentrate on local retailers, rather than the location of every West Elm in Mexico City. TikTok and Instagram also offer potential shopping info, but be wary of paid brand placements.

While cool art and vintage home decor are available at most destinations, “you’ll find more handmade items like textiles, rugs and baskets if you travel to places like Morocco, India and Mexico, which still have living crafts cultures,” says Sachasinh.

Consider hiring a shopping pro

To get straight to the treasure hunting, you could hire a tour guide who specializes in shopping for a few hours. Look for market- or retail-specific experiences in your destination on travel booking sites such as Tripadvisor and Tours by Locals ; using the name of a specific place (“Istanbul Grand Bazaar” or “Oaxaca pottery workshops”) can further winnow your search.

You can also try a simple online search to turn up market-savvy private guides such as Buenos Aires Shop Hop (guided jaunts to leather workshops and vintage markets in Argentina) or Maryam Montague , the proprietor of Peacock Pavilions hotel in Marrakesh, who takes travelers on day-long expeditions through the city’s souks looking for fuzzy tribal rugs, bright pottery and leather poufs.

Or go on a crafts- or shopping-focused trip. Tour companies such as Ace Camps and Thread Caravan host week-long trips to meet artisans and make things alongside them in destinations such as Perú (try weaving in the Sacred Valley near Machu Picchu) or Japan (learn how to use shibori indigo dyes or make pottery ).

Luxury trip-planning company Indagare offers frequent style-centric small group tours to Mallorca, Rajasthan and Paris with dinners in designers’ homes, market excursions and meetups with artists. Grant K. Gibson , an interior designer, leads small groups to destinations such as Jaipur, India, and Oaxaca, Mexico, where they visit showrooms, learn about block printing and woodworking techniques, and usually come back with suitcases full of merchandise.

“Design touches on so many passion points — art, history and culture, food and wine — that trips like these are a great linchpin for learning, exploration and meeting fellow design enthusiasts,” says Indagare founder and chief executive Melissa Bradley.

Know what to look for

To support local artisans, look for fair-trade crafts stores, which pay creators fairly for their products and tend to stock goods representative of a destination. Other top bets: flea markets focused on handmade or antique goods, museum shops, and government-sponsored artisan boutiques or networks. For instance, Artesanías de Colombia shops in Bogotá and Cartagena hawk rope hammocks and palm fiber baskets produced by Indigenous weavers.

“And visiting an artisan workshop might give the deepest connection to something handmade, since you get talk to the crafter or even make something beside them,” says Sachasinh, who recommends the weaving workshops and the blanket- and table runner-stuffed store at Ock Pop Tok in Luang Prabang, Laos. At the Seattle Glass Blowing Studio , artists create the delicate bowls and glasses the Pacific Northwest city is known for — and teach beginners how to make their own.

Think about how you’ll get it home

Serendipity and impulse inspire many souvenir purchases. But if you want a Turkish rug for your living room or a vintage Parisian painting to match your bathroom tile, be sure to travel with photos and measurements of the space you have in mind. “I always bring a measuring tape and swatches of any fabric I want to match, too,” says Montague.

Planning on carrying a lot of items home on the plane? Stash a collapsible duffel (Paravel makes a clever zip-down one ) in your luggage, or, for larger purchases, pack an extra, empty hard-sided suitcase. “It’s usually cheaper to pay for an extra checked bag than to ship a lot of things home,” says Montague. Know that oil paintings can be taken off their stretchers and rolled up, and that you can purchase a throw pillow cover that takes up little luggage space and buy the bulky insert when you arrive home.

“I’m wary of checking a bag with breakables, though,” says Bradley, who has ferried glass and pottery back from Cambodia and South Africa in a hard-sided carry-on.

And whether you are two hours away by car or five time zones away by plane, retailers that sell bulky items can generally guide you toward a shipper, even though it’s often not cheap. “I had this great farmhouse dining table shipped from the Paris flea market, and I’ve had people on my trips to India send home inlaid dressers,” says Gibson.

Get creative

Many housewares bought on your travels can be repurposed, and even ordinary goods found in other countries can seem special or elevated compared to what you’d get at home. “I go to Mexican hardware stores, because even basic items like door hooks or storage bins can be so colorful and fun,” says Robertson.

A Navajo rug can serve as a tablecloth; a beaded Maasai collar morphs into a sculpture when displayed on a wire stand. Even the simplest souvenirs — a vintage postcard of Yellowstone National Park, a scrap of fabric — look terrific when nicely framed.

Grouping disparate travel finds on a gallery wall can make them seem cohesive. “I have the most random ... stuff hung on the wall of the staircase at my house — a painting from India, a brass bowl I got in Turkey,” says San Francisco interior designer Chelsea Sachs . “It’s like a chronicle of my life, and these things remind me of special moments when I get back home.” Indagare’s Bradley arranges Iranian tiles, Burmese boxes and Peruvian ceramics amid the novels and art books on her shelves.

Fabrics, buttons and other easy-to-transport materials you snap up on the road can turn into home accents, even if you aren’t especially crafty. Bring home a couple pieces of washi — a Japanese mulberry paper so storied it’s recognized by UNESCO — to hot-glue onto a lampshade or inside a wooden tray. A basket or other object can be turned into a light fixture. “I carried a huge antique rattan birdcage home on a ferry from Provincetown once, and now it’s a chandelier,” says Robertson.

And almost any textile — a striped Peruvian blanket, a vintage quilt from a flea market — can be fashioned into a throw pillow or shower curtain by your drycleaner or used to reupholster a chair seat. “Sometimes stuff has to hang around for a while before you know what you’ll do with it,” says Sachs.

You might not want to amass a cabinet full of souvenir teacups, spoons or snow globes like your great grandparents did. But the concept of picking up one small object everywhere you travel still has some validity; it might save you from overbuying, and even kitschy trinkets can summon memories. Think about scoring a holiday tree ornament or small flower vase every time you go on a trip, or save a few coins from each foreign country you visit to pile into a bowl on your coffee table. “Pieces from different places become integral to your home and allow you to reconnect with a destination and its aesthetic,” says Bradley.

Jennifer Barger writes the Substack “The Souvenirist,” which explores where to travel and what to buy when you get there. She’s on Instagram at @dcjnell.

The challenge of selecting the ideal destinations, navigating through unfamiliar territories, and ensuring that you experience all the essential sights without overlooking anything, can quickly become overwhelming for any traveler. Google Maps goes beyond basic directions . It offers a suite of features designed to make trip planning not just easier, but also more enjoyable. Utilizing Offline Maps

When you're heading out on a trip, one thing you definitely don't want to worry about is losing access to your maps when your signal drops. That's where offline maps come in handy. Google Maps allows you to download maps for offline use, ensuring you never get lost even when you're off the grid.

Downloading maps for offline use is a straightforward process. Follow these steps:

  • Open the Google Maps app on your smartphone or tablet.
  • Tap on your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  • Choose Offline maps.
  • Tap Select your own map in the following window.
  • Drag the map window to your desired area.
  • Select Download.

Depending on the size of the area you're downloading and your internet connection speed, this process may take a few moments.

Once the download is complete, you'll be able to access the map even without an internet connection. Offline maps are not only convenient, but they can also save you time and frustration. Imagine hiking in a remote area and losing your cell signal — having the offline map ensures you can still navigate your way back to your starting point without any hassle. This is also one of the many secret Google Maps features that can come in handy.

Customizing Your Route With Multiple Stops

We all have days packed with errands or sightseeing, where we just wish we could plan the routes efficiently. Google Maps allows you to do that by customizing your route with multiple stops. It's a nifty feature that can save you time and make your trips more organized.

Follow these steps:

  • Open Google Maps on your device and enter your final destination.
  • Click on the three buttons next to your starting point and select Add stop.
  • You can add multiple stops by repeating this step.
  • Rearrange stops by dragging the three lines next to each destination.

Now, Google Maps will calculate the most efficient route for you, taking into account all your stops along the way. This is perfect for those days when you have several places to visit or errands to run, but you want to make sure you're not zigzagging all over town. It can also save you time and fuel. Plus, it's a great way to ensure you don't forget any important stops along the way.

When customizing your route with multiple stops on Google Maps, keep in mind to arrange your stops in a logical order to minimize backtracking and optimize efficiency. Additionally, consider traffic conditions and estimated travel times between each stop to plan your schedule accordingly. Lastly, ensure that all stops are accurately inputted to avoid any confusion or missed destinations along the way.

Taking Advantage Of Live Traffic Updates

This feature provides real-time information about traffic conditions, allowing you to avoid packed routes and save valuable time.

As you navigate with Google Maps, the app constantly monitors traffic conditions along your route. If there is heavy traffic, accidents, or road closures ahead, Google Maps will highlight the problematic area on the map using yellow or red markers.

To enable live traffic updates, open the Google Maps app and enter your destination. Once your route is set, Google Maps will display real-time traffic information along the way, including any incidents or slowdowns. You can then choose to follow the suggested route or explore alternative options based on the traffic conditions.

When using live traffic updates on Google Maps, keep in mind to regularly check for updates throughout your journey to stay informed about changing road conditions. You can also report problems on the road yourself on Google Maps . Lastly, be flexible with your travel plans and prepared to follow alternative routes suggested by Google Maps to avoid congestion and minimize travel time.

By taking advantage of live traffic updates, you can make informed decisions about your route and avoid getting stuck in gridlock. Whether you're commuting to work or heading out on a road trip, this feature can help you reach your destination more efficiently.

Exploring Nearby Attractions And Restaurants

When you're in a new area, or even just exploring your own neighborhood, Google Maps can be a great tool for discovering nearby attractions and restaurants.

To start exploring:

  • Open Google Maps and zoom in on the area of your interest. You should see several options below the search bar, including Restaurants, Gas, Coffee, Shopping, ATMs, and more.
  • Click on the option you want to explore. For instance, if you are looking for places to eat nearby, select Restaurants to see a list of dining options in the area. Each restaurant will be marked with its location on the map, along with details such as the establishment's name, its rating, and sometimes photos or reviews.
  • Refine your search further by applying filters for rating and distance.
  • After selecting a restaurant that catches your interest, click on it to view more detailed information, including its address, hours of operation, contact details, and directions on how to get there.

Google Maps also allows you to call the restaurant directly from the app if you wish to make a reservation or inquire about menu items.

You can explore all these categories by swiping right on the options pane below the search bar. To view the full list, click on the More button (three dots) at the very end.

Create A Custom Map To Share With Friends And Family

You can also easily create a custom map and share it with whoever you want on Google Maps. It's a great way to collaborate on travel plans, recommend must-visit places, or simply share your favorite local hangouts.

  • Open Google Maps on your computer and sign into your Google account.
  • Click on the menu icon and choose Saved > Maps > Open My Maps.
  • Start a new map by clicking the Create A New Map button.
  • Give your map a title and a description that encapsulates the essence of your adventure or theme. This could be anything from "Family Road Trip to Yellowstone" to "Best Coffee Shops in New York City."
  • Populate your map with markers. Click on the marker icon, then click on the location on the map you wish to mark. For each marker, you can add a detailed description, upload photos, and even include links for more information.
  • Additionally, Google My Maps allows you to draw paths and shapes, perfect for outlining routes or highlighting areas of interest.
  • Once your map is ready, click on the Share button. Here, you'll be prompted to set the map's privacy settings. You can choose to make it public, share it with specific people, or keep it private with a link.
  • Finally, invite your friends via email or simply send them the link.
