Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Amazon Rainforest Tours & Travel Guide

Amazon Rainforest Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Exploring the Amazon rainforest, whether by a small ship , river cruise ship , jungle lodges, or camping expedition, promises an unforgettable rainforest excursion.

Spanning over two million square miles across Brazil, Peru, and Ecuador, it's the largest rainforest in the world. The Amazon offers unparalleled biodiversity and natural beauty. Immerse yourself in the eerie calls of howler monkeys as you search for elusive wildlife like macaws, sloths, and jaguars during your Amazon river trip or stay in the Amazon lodges.

Discover remote villages and learn about indigenous cultures, all while guided by expert local guides and tour operators recommended by Travelstride.

Read more about the Amazon Forest and the most beautiful forests in the world >>

Rurrenabaque, accessible from La Paz by a short flight or a scenic bus journey through the mountains, serves as Bolivia's entry point to the Amazon. Here, travelers can embark on tours of both the pampas and the jungle. For the budget-conscious, Bolivia is usually the place to find the cheapest Amazon tours.

Pampas Tours: These tours offer the opportunity to explore the wetlands bordering the rainforest, providing excellent wildlife sightings. Hop into a riverboat, listen to the sounds of the rainforest, and spot capybaras, caimans, monkeys, and colorful birds along the riverbank.

Search for Anacondas: Some tours even include the chance to plod through swampland in search of anacondas, although it's essential to be cautious and avoid touching them. Reviews are a reliable way to ensure the tour operator is reputable.

Swimming With Pink River Dolphins: A highlight of pampas tours is the chance to swim with pink river dolphins, a thrilling experience best enjoyed in the late afternoon when the water is warmer.

Jungle Tours: Jungle tours from Rurrenabaque vary in duration, ranging from two days to a month. These immersive experiences involve trekking through dense forestation, camping in the wilderness, and cooking dinner over an open fire. Visitors may also enjoy activities such as fishing in the river or crafting handmade souvenirs.

You can travel to the Amazon rainforest from various points across Brazil , providing unforgettable experiences amid the lush wilderness.

Pantanal Wetlands: Like Bolivia's pampas, the Pantanal wetlands in southern Brazil offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities. Tours typically depart from Campo Grande or Cuiaba and offer a range of activities such as canoeing, piranha fishing, boat trips, walking excursions, and river floats.

Visitors can expect sightings of capybaras, caimans, giant otters, and even jaguars. Expert guides enhance the experience and increase the chances of spotting elusive wildlife like tapirs and giant anteaters.

Rainforest Expeditions: Venturing deeper into the Brazilian rainforest, tours are often conducted by boat, whether on a luxurious cruise liner or a traditional riverboat with hammocks. Along the way, travelers can spot pink dolphins, caimans, and monkeys and even try their hand at piranha fishing from their Amazon river cruise ships.

Guided jungle walks may lead to close encounters with tarantulas and other fascinating creatures. Many tours also include overnight stays in ecolodges, offering the chance to immerse oneself in the sights and sounds of the surrounding nature.

Peru can be a popular jumping-off point into the Amazon. Many adventurous tourists combine Machu Picchu and Amazon jungle tours. While some shorter trips start from Cusco, adventurous types can also head to northern Peru for deep jungle treks. Excursions are undertaken on foot or by boat, and highlights include spotting river otters, monkeys, caimans, and macaws.

The Amazon River basin in Ecuador is one of the most biodiverse places on earth. Here, you'll get to stay in ecolodges in the rainforest, surrounded by vibrant hummingbirds and butterflies. You can enjoy rainforest treks, boat rides, and wildlife spotting.

For a truly immersive experience, meet and stay with indigenous tribes living in the Amazon. Reaching these communities can be challenging since Ecuador's rainforests are highly isolated and hard to reach.

You can also fly into the community on a puddle-jumper aircraft and stay in one of the lodges the villagers own for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Discover the adventurous side of the Amazon in Colombia , offering a sense of exploration and untamed wilderness.

Few visitors choose Colombia for their Amazon trip, meaning you may have this unspoiled land to yourself and a higher chance of seeing wildlife if you visit the Amazon rainforest from Colombia. It may also mean fewer resources and tour options, but you have nothing to worry about if you're visiting the Amazon rainforest with Travelstride's suggested guided tours.

Like Ecuador, you can experience the unique culture of indigenous tribes by staying with them in Colombia. Make local handicrafts and try traditional delicacies like mojojoy, a fried worm in palm trees.

Why Consider an Amazon Travel Package?

Experiencing the Amazon Rainforest with a guided travel package is more secure than venturing into the wilderness alone. Experienced guides are equipped to navigate the complexities of the rainforest terrain and handle any unforeseen circumstances.

Moreover, knowledgeable guides enhance the experience by offering insights into the region's ecology, wildlife, and indigenous cultures, enriching the journey with educational opportunities.

Going with a group fosters camaraderie among like-minded travelers, creating memorable shared experiences and ensuring a sense of community throughout the adventure. In essence, a guided Amazon rainforest package ensures a well-organized and immersive exploration, maximizing enjoyment and minimizing risks.

Popular Stops Along an Amazon Rainforest Tour

Remember that rain can occur in the rainforest at any time of year, so be prepared for occasional showers regardless of when you visit.

Ultimately, the best time for your trip depends on what activities you want to pursue and your tolerance for humidity and rain.

Puerto Maldonado

Puerto Maldonado is the heartland for Peruvian Amazon Rainforest tours. Its location in the south-eastern region of Peru makes it strategic to add to a visit to Machu Picchu or Cusco. A boat ride will take you from Puerto Maldonado down the Madre de Dios river to a comfortable jungle lodge. Here you can spot all kinds of unique wildlife, visit the Tambopata National Reserve, or the world's largest macaw clay lick, the Chuncho claylick.

amazon tourism packages

Iquitos is the gateway to Amazon River exploration in the Peruvian Amazon. Lodges tend to be more rustic, but Iquitos is where the most luxurious Amazon River cruises embark. Iquitos city has a fascinating history, while just beyond the buildings, the dense rainforest seems to go on forever. River cruises sail around the Pacaya Samiria Reserve where you'll have ample opportunities for bird watching, sporting pink river dolphins, and maybe an elusive jaguar.

Manu National Park

Manu National Park is for off-the-beaten-path Amazon touring. This UNESCO World Heritage site spans an astonishing 1.5 million hectares of highly protected Peruvian Rainforest and is not easily accessible. Expect long car and boat rides through the jungles to get to your lodge, all the makings for a wild adventure!

Tambopata Research Center

The Tambopata Research Center is an eco-friendly lodge in the Peruvian Amazon near Puerto Maldonado. This research center is the only lodge within the Tambopata National Reserve, giving you prime opportunities for wildlife spotting. Ongoing research for the Macaw Project continues onsite.

Peru Highlights

Peru is filled with archaeological ruins, scenic landscapes, and delicious flavors. Must-see places in Peru include:

Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in four or two days. The Inca Trail is a 500-year old pathway where the elite Incas once entered into the “Lost City of the Incas”. Plan with your Peru for Less travel advisor in advance, Inca Trail permits tend to sell out even 6-months in advance.

Amazon Rainforest

Step into the lush Peruvian Amazon Rainforest and witness a spectacular array of wildlife in its natural habitat. Lodges in Puerto Maldonado are ideal for excursions and daily activities. Those looking for a more luxurious Amazon experience would love an Iquitos Amazon River cruise. Colorful macaws, giant tarantulas, and playful river otters are among the sights you’ll behold.

Cusco city has it all, archaeological ruins, colonial buildings, top-rated restaurants, and countless places to explore. Your Cusco City Tour will take you to the top highlights like Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, the Cusco Cathedral, and more.

Arequipa is a picturesque town and also the second-largest city in Peru. Local markets, beautifully built colonial architecture, and El Misti volcano are among the things you’ll see while walking the cobblestone streets of the white city.

Lake Titicaca

Sail on the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and step on the reed Uros and Taquile floating islands. Some of the best weavers are found in this area so pick up some Peruvian textiles here for unique souvenirs.

Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are mysterious geoglyphs and geometric shapes drawn onto the desert floor hundreds of years ago by the Nazca culture. Little is known about them nevertheless, the Nazca Lines inspire awe in those who take a flight over them.

Lima is a mixture of modern city living and historical significance. Here you’ll find Central restaurant (ranked #6 by 50 Worlds Best), UNESCO World Heritage sites like Historic City Center with the San Francisco Convent, and the best shopping in Peru.

Your Introduction to Ecuador’s Rainforest

Ecuador’s rainforest is in the far western part of Amazonia. It’s where the first trickles of the Amazon River begin and where the forest presses up against the Andes. This location is linked to its incredible diversity, as the forest teems with tropica life.

When you exit the plane, you will be greeted by sun, tropical temperature and high humidity. The amount of sun provides energy for this vast expanse of Amazonia. To give a clue to this, even the country’s name of Ecuador means equator in Spanish.

The jewel in the crown of Ecuador’s Amazon is called the Yasuni National Park. Yasuni is the most well known protected area of Ecuadorian Amazon and contains a record-breaking number of species.

Your gateway to Ecuador’s Amazon Rainforest is called Puerto Francisco de Orellana. It’s also known as El Coca. From here, you can enjoy some of the top-rated jungle lodges and river cruises.

On these Amazon tours, you will enjoy guided expeditions in wildlife-rich rainforest to see many animals and plants.

The two main protected areas of Ecuador’s Amazon are:

  • The Yasuni National Park
  • The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

These lay on either side of the Napo River. These areas are connected. And this means surrounding rainforest is home to a similar level of species. This river later merges with others to form the mighty Amazon and provides your way of entering the forest.

The more flooded areas are where you can find the more budget conscious experiences. The premium experiences in Ecuador’s Amazon often focus on the rainforest surrounding Yasuni National Park.

We will mention some of these below.

Sacha Lodge Amazon Tour, Canopy Walkway, Ecuador

One of the favorite sights from these experiences are claylicks. Claylicks are areas to see an abundance of colorful Amazonian parrots gathered in one area and are very rare in the northern Amazon. However, you will visit the Yasuni clay lick on the guided tours below.

You will also enjoy guided rainforest walks and canoe experiences to spot different animals. See colorful birds, many different monkeys and fascinating reptiles.

Saki Monkey, Sacha Lodge Amazon Tour, Ecuador

Amazon Rainforest Tours in Ecuador

To make the most of Ecuador’s Amazon, choose a recommended expedition lodge or cruise.

We have picked Ecuador Amazon tours that provide a fantastic rainforest experience. These offer wildlife-rich rainforest, comfortable accommodation, delicious meals and professionally guided tours. You will explore the Amazon Rainforest led by knowledgeable, well trained and friendly guides.

The tours can also help with your transfers from Quito to El Coca.

Amazon Cruise or Rainforest Lodge?

One of the first considerations is to think if you would prefer an Amazon cruise or a rainforest lodge. This depends on your personality and interests.

Cruises visit different rainforest sections. This means you explore a larger area of Amazon.

They can also provide more comfort as they offer air-conditioning giving you a more hotel-like base to return to after guided jungle tours.

As an example, click the recommended Manatee Amazon Cruise video below.

Aboard the cruise, you will explore the iconic Yasuni National Park. The cruise offers canoe exploration and professionally guided forest walks through the national park.

Manatee Cruise

Rainforest lodges, however, can provide more connection to the Amazon. You can often see and hear birds and troops of monkeys crossing the rainforest above your cabin.

This is especially true if the lodge has been there for a while and the animals have habituated to visitors. A good example of this is the fantastic Sacha Lodge.

At rainforest lodges, the paths connecting different lodge areas are on raised walkways. This means you can also see animals simply when walking between areas. See monkeys, lizards and other wildlife from the comfort of the lodge itself.

Some lodges also have incredible canopy walkways like the Sacha Lodge below, which offers one of the more remarkable walkways in the rainforest.

Now let’s have a deeper look at some of the top Amazon tours in Ecuador.

The Manatee Amazon Cruise – 4, 5 or 8-day Amazon Cruises

Manatee Cruise, Ecuador

Aboard the Manatee Cruise , you will travel to different Amazon areas. And you will focus on exploring the magnificent Yasuni National Park.

The Manatee Amazon Explorer offers you a luxury cruise of Ecuador’s Amazon.

Enjoy the Yasuni clay lick, canopy tower, glamping and fantastic guided rainforest walks.

For an introduction, click the video below.

After your excursions, return to the comfort of the vessel. You have a choice of different spacious suite options. Each suite offers large windows, so you can stay connected to the rainforest. You can even see different birds while relaxing in your room. All suites then provide modern en-suite bathrooms.

You will be treated delicious cuisine in the dining room and can relax in the comfortable social areas. There is also a bar and observation deck to enjoy.

To check if your travel dates are available, you can send the Manatee Cruise a request using the button below.

The Sacha Lodge – 4 or 5-day+ Amazon Tour

Sacha Lodge - Top Jungles Lodges in Ecuador

The Sacha Lodge is surrounded by a 5,000 acre private reserve in connected rainforest with Yasuni National Park.

After you arrive in Coca, you will be escorted up the Napo River. You will then board an engineless boat to be paddled across the Pilchicocha Lake to the Sacha Lodge. The lodge is found across the lake, nestled on the bank.

Even on the journey to the lodge, you will enjoy fantastic rainforest sights. See many different birds and have your first introduction to Ecuador’s Amazon.

You will explore the surrounding rainforest on professionally guided tours. Enjoy forest walks and canoe experiences to find many different monkeys, colorful birds and reptiles.

Squirrel Monkey, Sacha Lodge Amazon Tour, Ecuador

A main feature of the Sacha Lodge is the incredible canopy walkway.

The walkway is supported by three large canopy towers. These towers are then connected by a 940-foot (275-meter) long canopy bridge. And it’s suspended 94 feet (30 meters) above ground level. With your guide’s help, the walkway provides a fantastic place for you to spot birdlife and different animals.

The Sacha Lodge itself then offers comfortable cabins and en-suite bathrooms. Your bathroom include a hot shower and flushing toilet. All of the cabins are then spaced between the trees in the rainforest. For your meals, you will enjoy delicious cuisine in the dining room or lakeside eating area.

See the video below for a short introduction to the Sacha Lodge.

Sacha Lodge

There is then a lodge bar to enjoy a drink in the evenings. And on at least one of your evenings, you will enjoy a BBQ by the lake. With its canopy walkway, expert guides and wildlife-rich rainforest, the Sacha Lodge is one of our favorites.

To check availability, you can message the lodge using the tour bubble below.

La Selva Lodge – 4 or 5-day+ Amazon Tour

La Selva Suite, Ecuador

For a little luxury in Ecuador’s Amazon, we recommend La Selva Lodge.

Not only a luxury experience, La Selva Lodge is also Rainforest Alliance certified. This should give you peace of mind that you’re with a responsible operator.

Enjoy guided tours in the surrounding rainforest. Head out scouting for different monkeys. See howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins and tamarins. You will also find many parrots, toucans, orchids and more with your professional Amazon Rainforest guide.

La Selva Lodge also offers a fantastic canopy tower to look over the canopy. This is a great place to see many different birds. You will also enjoy seeing the different shades of green over the tops of the trees.

The excellent La Selva Lodge then goes a little further in terms of a luxury experience. The lodge offers an on-site spa for a massage, hot water pools in the family suites and a dedicated honeymoon program.

The Anakonda Amazon Cruise – 4, 5 or 8-day Amazon Cruise

Anakonda Cruise

The Anakonda is the larger sister vessel of the Manatee Cruise above.

The cruise offers the same high standard of service and guided tours. And the Anakonda Amazon Cruise offers a fantastic experience of Ecuador’s Amazon.

Your air-conditioned suite offers the perfect place to relax after your jungle expeditions. Explore the Amazon with your professional and friendly guide aboard skiff expeditions and on forest walks.

You will then be treated to delicious cuisine in the dining room, a drink at the bar, or relaxing with a book in the lounge. The sundeck is also a great place to enjoy rainforest scenery and admiring the constellations on crystal clear evenings.

To check availability for your dates, you can send a message to the Anakonda Cruise using the button below.

Arrival to Manaus, Brazil

The city of Manaus is in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. While flying in today, make sure to look out the window for your first unforgettable view of the green carpet of the rainforest below. Depending on the time of your arrival, once you have settled into your accommodation in Manaus, the rest of your day is free to explore the city at the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon on your own. We recommend visiting the beautiful Amazonas Theater and Opera House. As well as the lively Adolpho Lisboa Market where you can indulge in the sweet fruits of the Amazon. Tonight, head out to one of the local restaurants in Manaus where you can enjoy fresh and locally caught fish straight from the Amazon. Included: Private transfer from the airport to your hotel; Accommodation in Manaus. (Meals – None) Show more

Into the Amazon

You will embark on your adventure from Manaus, the city at the gateway to the Brazilian Amazon , and take a boat to see the Meeting of the Waters. This famous sight is where the almost black waters of the Rio Negro and the brown, sandy ones of the Rio Solimões meet up. Due to the difference in temperature, speed, and density, these waters run side by side for over 3 miles before mixing. This is just the appetizer to the rest of your Amazon experience.

You’ll feel the excitement build as you continue your journey deeper into the Amazon where you’ll be able to spot wildlife on the banks and in the river. You’ll pass by local villages for a glimpse of what life is like in the Amazon before finally arriving at your Amazon lodge.

Have some lunch, take a siesta, or just listen to the sounds of the Amazon before you start the afternoon excursions. You might particularly enjoy a guided canoe trip through the Igarapes (Amazon waterways) and Igapos (flooded forests) near to the lodge. It is a great introduction to the wildlife abound, and the Amazon’s flora and fauna living on your doorstep.

Following an action-packed day, you can relax at your lodge over drinks and dinner before falling asleep to the sounds of the wildlife around you.

Note: Activities may vary upon the selected lodge.

Included: Private transfer to the port; Activities at the lodge, Accommodation in the Amazon (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Exploring the Amazon

Rise and shine bright and early, trust us it’s worth it to watch the sunrise and the jungle come alive! The very early morning is the best time to spot many of the rainforest’s wildlife inhabitants and is also before the heat and humidity of the day kicks in.

After sharing your breakfast with some curious monkeys while listening to the beautiful soundtrack of the rainforest, you’ll go on a hike through the jungle. Here your knowledgeable local guide will be on hand to help you spot wildlife and introduce you to the forest’s medicinal plants.

Following lunch back at the lodge and having freshened up there’s plenty more to explore – so what are you waiting for, it’s time for a spot of fishing with a difference. Today’s catch of the day is piranha! Despite their man-eating reputation, these toothy fish usually feast on fallen fruit instead of people. So you’ll sometimes even see the guides and locals happily swimming in these waters.

Your friends back home don’t need to know you had your hands and legs firmly inside the canoe. On the way back to your lodge, keep your eyes out for friendly pink and grey river dolphins that will happily swim alongside your canoe.

Jump back in the boat after dinner for a little game of “Find the Caiman/Alligator” during a twilight river excursion. Look out for owls, capybaras, and of course the glistening eyes of caimans and alligators. The professional guide will pick up some of the smaller ones to give you a closer look before letting it go about its nightly business.

Feeling brave after fishing for piranha? If you’re feeling up for it and depending on the size of the alligator or caiman, your guide may give you the chance to hold it as well!

As we mentioned before, it doesn’t get much more exciting than Amazon tours in Brazil.

Included: Activities at the lodge, Accommodation in the Amazon (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner).

Meeting the Locals

On day four of your Brazil Amazon tour, you’ll get to know the locals a little better. Here’s what you should expect.

Slept well after last night’s twilight river excursion? Then this morning, set out for a local village to meet with some families. Now is an excellent time to get your questions answered about how they live their lives and have adapted to this environment as well as the challenges they face living in the Amazon. You’ll also see how a lot of the foods and goods, such as cassava, rubber, Brazil nuts, and herbs, are produced.

Cassava is one of the main staples in the Northern Brazilian diet and is usually eaten with rice and beans or fish. Your expert guide will be on hand to translate and explain a little more about the different uses of some of the plants native to the Amazon. Including those used for medicinal, culinary, and hunting purposes.

Then it’s time to return to the adventure lodge for lunch before taking the afternoon to relax. Gently swinging in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the jungle and perhaps even spotting some wildlife at the lodge.

Travel to Magical Rio

At the designated time, you’ll head back to Manaus airport for your flight to Rio. If you have the morning free, feel free to relax, or create your own adventure. Our guides are always ready to point out some fun activities in each area.

Landing in Rio de Janeiro, our local representative will be waiting for you at the airport to greet and take you to your hotel. Once you’ve settled into your accommodation in Rio, the rest of the day is free to explore some of our favorite local spots.

Stroll along the long boulevards next to the beaches of Ipanema, Leblon, and of course Copacabana while humming the song, Girl from Ipanema’. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of huts selling delicious freshly squeezed juices and coconuts. These will refresh you as you soak up the breathtaking cityscape of Rio de Janeiro and realize why the city is known as The Marvelous City’!

Relax and watch the sunset at the beach before going out for dinner at one of the restaurants along the promenade. We recommend trying one of Brazil’s most famous and traditional dishes, feijoada carioca (a stew of beans with beef and pork served with white rice and farofa). Washed down with a refreshing caipirinha cocktail or a local beer Brahma and Skol are our favorites! Following dinner, you can go back to your hotel to relax or go to one of the local samba bars to dance the night away!

Included: Transfer to the airport, Private transfer from Rio Airport to Hotel with English speaking driver; Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).

Rio like a local

A trip to Rio isn’t complete without some of the fantastic activities in store for you on day six of your Amazon Brazil tour.

The tour starts at 9 am at the meeting point: in front of the famous “Copacabana Palace Hotel”, an icon of the ’30s / 40’s golden Copacabana years. After learning a bit about this place, you will walk a few blocks to get to the Subway Metro Station, main´s Carioca´s transport around the city every day. You will then reach the Municipal Theatre built on an eclectic style, located in the center of the city.

A few blocks away, you will find and jump in the Bondinho Santa Teresa, a cable car built in 1872 that runs on the top of an old aqueduct called Arcos da Lapa. After a few stations, we reach the bohemian neighborhood of Santa Teresa, passing by many old antique mansions. You will find the Parque das Ruinas (closed on Mondays) here. This old Palace ruins was rebuilt and became the center of many arts and cultural activities of the city with panoramic views in all its splendor.

If clouds allow, you will see from here the City Center, Sugarloaf, Guanabara Bay, and many others. A few Kodak moments later, you will get to the Celeron Colorful Stairs, a cultural main spot in the Lapa neighborhood, the core of the Carioca´s nights. Finally, you will enjoy the Confiteria Colombo, an old Art Nouveau coffee store from the latest 1800, chosen as one of the ten most beautiful coffee stores in the world (closed on Sundays).

When this visit is over, you will either be dropped at the Sugarloaf to get into the cable car or take the metro back to the Copacabana Palace where the tour ends. Our guide will give you directions on how to get to Christ the Redeemer by yourself in the afternoon. Or we can pre-buy your Christ the Redeemer entrance fee as availability can be scarce during some periods.

Following the tour and returning to your hotel or heading straight for the beach, the rest of the day is free to spend at leisure. Tonight, keep to the beachside restaurants and feast on a long list of salgadinhos (finger food) such as fried cod cakes. All washed down with a nice cold caipirinha. Be careful though, their sweet and smooth taste packs quite a punch, so drink them with caution!

Included: Private excursion with Guide and Public Transportation; Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).

Day at Leisure

Every good Rio de Janeiro adventure has some downtime to relax and take in all the beautiful sights and smells this wonderful city has to offer. However, if you’d like to explore even more, we have an optional day tour available to you.

This is a day at leisure or you can take our optional tour – Backgrounds of Carnival. Rio is internationally recognized for its grandiose Carnival Parade and Samba. But only a few people really know how the parades are made. With this tour, you will get to know the origins of this world-known festivity. Visit the Sambadrome (Carnaval stadium) and its cultural center; the revitalized port area where the samba has its roots, including a visit to the charming port area neighborhood of Morro da Conceicao.

Take a stroll through an old hidden historical area – nowadays full of artists and ateliers. See the historical site Pedra do Sal, where the samba started. And familiarize yourself with the African-Brazilian culture, the period of slavery, and all the pillars that have supported the modern-day Carnival.

Undoubtedly the highlight of the tour is the visit to a samba school atelier. Here you can experience how the carnival in Rio is being done behind the scenes. Including the impressive and gigantic work of designing and building all the magnificent floats that will be used in the famous parade at the Sambadrome during carnival.

Included: Accommodation in Rio. (Meals – Breakfast).

Flight to the Falls

Iguazu Falls Brazil is your destination for the eighth day of your adventure tour. Your private transfer will take you to Rio airport for your trip to the falls. Upon arrival at Foz do Iguacu’s Airport, you’ll dive straight into the action and waste no time as your transfer and guide picks you up to begin your tour of the Brazilian side of the Falls.

To make the most of your time at the Natural World Wonder of Iguaçu Falls and to explore the Brazilian side of the Falls you’ll first have a private guided tour of the Brazilian side. Then you’ll be taken to your hotel in the town of Foz do Iguacu on the Brazilian side of the Falls.

The Iguazu Falls border Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay and today you’ll have a private guided tour of the Brazilian side. Amidst a vibrant jungle of exotic trees and colorful butterflies, the Brazilian side offers a more panoramic view of the falls. As well as an up-close and direct view of Iguaçu’s largest waterfall that stands at over 262 ft.

Ominously known as the Garganta del Diablo (or Devil’s Throat), this is the waterfall that made Eleanor Roosevelt say, “Poor Niagara…” If you want to experience the falls from above you can organize an Iguazu Helicopter Ride; just make sure to mention it at the start of the day so that your private guide can make time for it.

Note: In case you have an evening flight into Foz do Iguacu, we will schedule the Brazil excursion on Day 3 before your flight out of Foz do Iguacu.

Included: Private transfer from your hotel to Rio Airport, Private excursion with Transport, Guide and Entrance fee from the airport; Accommodation in Iguazu. (Meals – Breakfast).

Argentinean side of Iguazu

Today is the day you’ve been waiting for as you travel just 18.6 miles (30km) from the town of Foz do Iguaçu to the Tancredo Neves Bridge. Where you’ll cross over the Iguaçu River and arrive at Argentina’s National Park of Iguazu. Climbing aboard a small train your first stop will be the ominously named Devil’s Throat (Garganta del Diablo. Which, standing at over 262ft., is the biggest waterfall in Iguazu. Having soaked up the enormity of the Devil’s Throat, your guide will take you along the wooden walkways and trails of both the upper and lower circuit.

With over 270 separate waterfalls and surrounded by the verdant jungle of Iguazu, exploring the Natural World Wonder of Iguazu is one of the most unforgettable moments. You’ll notice that the various trails that take you through the jungle, above and around waterfalls are built a few feet above the jungle floor and waterways. These raised platforms not only protect the natural habitat of the jungle wildlife but they will also take you to secluded viewpoints offering unimaginable views across the whole National Park.

After a full day exploring Argentina’s side of Iguazu Falls, it’s time to cross back over the border. As your transfer takes you back to your accommodation in Foz do Iguaçu, the rest of your evening is free to spend at your leisure.

Included: Private excursion with Transport, Guide and Entrance fees; Accommodation in Iguazu. (Meals – Breakfast).

Departure from Iguazu

It’s time to hit the road again as you make your way to your next destination where if you are planning to, you can enjoy exploring the beauty and vibrant, Carnival atmosphere of Brazil further. Your private transfer will take you to the airport for your onward journey.

Included: Private transfer from your hotel to the airport with assistance. (Meals – Breakfast).

Epic Amazon sale on travel essentials — 11 deals I’m eyeing, starting at $3

I'm tempted to buy them all for an upcoming trip

Nori Press, travel jewelry case, Mi wireless transmitter silos on blue background with Killer Deals badge

Quick Links

Amazon travel deals.

I used to consider myself something of a traveling pro. Catching a flight or two a month used to be the norm, but in the last few years, I can count the number of times I've arrived at a destination from the air on just one hand. Needless to say, my in-transit routine is a little rusty. And for an upcoming trip, there are still a few last-minute gadgets I'm eyeing to make the going easier.

Thankfully, nearly everything on my list is on sale at Amazon. I uncovered nine discounted travel essentials to supplement, re-supply, or replace the few items I already have on hand. For instance, while I absolutely adore my check-covered packing cubes from Calpak , they aren't exactly phenomenal at compressing my clothing. That's where these Amazon finds come in handy.

  • Lysol Disinfecting Wipes To-Go 2-Pack: was $4 now $3
  • Airless Pump Bottle Refillable Containers: was $9 now $7
  • ProCase Travel Jewelry Box: was $17 now $9
  • Small Nylon Crescent Crossbody Bag: was $14 now $10
  • Packism 3-Pack Clear Toiletry Bags: was $13 now $11
  • Anker Nano Power Bank: was $29 now $18
  • Hyted Travel Adapter and Converter: was $39 now $29
  • Bagsmart Compression Packing Cubes: was $42 now $39
  • Mee Audio Wireless Audio Transmitter: was $49 now $42
  • Apple Air Tag 4-Pack: was $99 now $79
  • Nori Press Travel Steam Iron: was $120 now $106

Lysol Disinfecting Wipes To-Go 2-Pack: was $4 now $3

Lysol Disinfecting Wipes To-Go 2-Pack: was $4 now $3 I wipe down everything on a flight — the tray, seat, buckle, you name it. A small, portable pack of disinfectant wipes is a must for me, but an often overpriced buy at the airport. I recommend scooping up this discounted pair before even heading out the door.

Airless Pump Bottle Refillable Containers: was $9 now $7 @ Amazon

Airless Pump Bottle Refillable Containers: was $9 now $7 @ Amazon Full disclosure: I'll be transporting my haircare, lotion and more in the mini travel bottles from Ries this go around, but love the price point of these 1.8-ounce airless pump bottles over on Amazon. "No waste! No spills!" one reviewer writes. And that's the biggest benefit of going with this type of reusable dispenser, in my opinion.

ProCase Travel Jewelry Box: was $17 now $9 @ Amazon

ProCase Travel Jewelry Box: was $17 now $9 @ Amazon For some reason, I've never invested in a travel-sized jewelry organizer. Instead, I have a bad habit of stuffing gems and baubles in the pockets of my toiletry bag. This ingenious, shell-shaped leather box, however, offers a multitude of ways to securely store everything I'm planning to wear (and then some!) with a top lid partition and removable clapboard. It's just 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall but can carry up to 5 necklaces, 20 earrings, 7 rings, and 8 bracelets. But the best part? The black colorway is currently 44% off.

Packism 3-Pack Clear Toiletry Bags: was $13 now $11 @ Amazon

Packism 3-Pack Clear Toiletry Bags: was $13 now $11 @ Amazon Truthfully, I've never had an issue with packing too many skincare or makeup items. But armed with the knowledge that London's Heathrow and Gatwick airports are notorious for being strict on this front, I'm not taking my chances with the 100ml liquid limit (a rule that, although due to be lifted, still stands). Sturdier and more leakproof than Ziplock, I'll be tapping one of these see-through, waterproof baggies instead.

Small Nylon Crescent Crossbody Bag: was $14 now $10 @ Amazon

Small Nylon Crescent Crossbody Bag: was $14 now $10 @ Amazon I'm a "small purse" type of person, but knowing full well I'll be spending the majority of my day away from a hotel room, I knew I'd need a bag big enough (but not too large — my Longchamp Le Pliage is just a tad too cumbersome) to carry all of my essentials and mirrorless camera. This trendy, crescent-shaped sling bag is made with water-resistant nylon that's fully packable.

Anker Nano Power Bank: was $29 now $18 @ Amazon

Anker Nano Power Bank: was $29 now $18 @ Amazon If you, like me, swiftly drain your phone's battery, a portable charging pack is a must. But I've decided my old model is simply too big and bulky anymore, especially since it limits use with a cord. Anker's miniature USB-C version is far more compact and won't interfere with my picture-taking. Reviewers say it's quick, convenient, and extremely lightweight. It's also 37% off right now.

Hyted Travel Adapter and Converter: was $49 now $37 @ Amazon

Hyted Travel Adapter and Converter: was $49 now $37 @ Amazon After realizing the travel plug adapter (a must-have when venturing outside of the U.S.) I purchased for a long weekend in Ireland actually wouldn't safely support my hair styling tools, I started searching for a fairly priced converter. This particular unit, albeit a bit of an eyesore, is 24% off and converts 220V to 110V.

Bagsmart Compression Packing Cubes: was $42 now $39 @ Amazon

Bagsmart Compression Packing Cubes: was $42 now $39 @ Amazon After watching these packing cubes compress down in action on TikTok, I dreaded having to replace my current set but knew it'd likely be worth the swap. Even a few inches of spare room — especially in my super slim, ultra-light July carry-on —would be welcomed. This 6-pack is backed by 8,800-plus positive reviews, which note the quality zippers and fabric, range of size options, and pack down.

Mee Audio Wireless Audio Transmitter: was $49 now $42 @ Amazon

Mee Audio Wireless Audio Transmitter: was $49 now $42 @ Amazon We've all probably heard of Twelve South's AirFly ($54), but I hate paying full price for anything, and this brand alternative is $12 less. This pick, in particular, supports up to two AirPods, handy when not traveling solo, to share music or tune into the same film. One reviewer even writes, "The audio quality is fantastic. I was initially skeptical about using a wireless audio transmitter, fearing that it might compromise the sound, but I'm happy to report that the sound remains crisp and clear."

Apple Air Tag 4-Pack: was $99 now $79 @ Amazon

Apple Air Tag 4-Pack: was $99 now $79 @ Amazon Nothing stresses me out more than having to check luggage, but with a 9-day vacation coming up, I won't be able to fit everything (or the souvenirs I bring back) in my carry-on. An Apple Air Tag, however, would at least enable me to keep tabs on where my suitcase ends up. It's only $5 short of the lowest price we've ever seen for a 4-pack.

Nori Press Travel Steam Iron: was $120 now $106 @ Amazon

Nori Press Travel Steam Iron: was $120 now $106 @ Amazon Not every hotel I stay at always has an ironing board on hand, but I've also never splurged on a travel-friendly steamer. Luckily, Nori's Press is 10% off and will fit in my suitcase much like a hair straightener would. The price alone is worth not having to worry about bent collars or wrinkly tops.

Amazon just announced Prime Day 2024 — what to know right now

Amazon Prime Day 2024 is happening this July, offering Prime members the chance to shop exclusive deals.

Amazon Prime Day is back for its 10th annual mega sale this July, allowing Prime members to shop exclusive deals on tech , travel accessories , kitchen gadgets , home products , pet supplies and more. The retailer has yet to confirm the exact dates of Prime Day and hasn’t shared many details about the event. Below, learn everything we know about Prime Day 2024 so far — we’ll continue updating you as we get more information.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2024?

Amazon is hosting Prime Day 2024 in July. The retailer has not confirmed the exact dates of the event yet, but it’s typically a 48-hour sale. Prime Day usually takes place in mid-July — for example, Prime Day 2023 took place on July 11 and 12 and Prime Day 2022 took place on July 12 and 13.

According to Amazon, Prime Day 2024 is happening in over 20 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the U.S., and the UK.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Prime Day is Amazon’s biggest sale of the year and it’s exclusive to Prime members. It’s typically a 48-hour sale during which brands discount products to some of their lowest prices of the year. Amazon has hosted Prime Day in the summer for the past two years and a second Prime Day-level mega sale in October.

Big retailers like Walmart , Target and Best Buy tend to host their sales around Prime Day. Other retailers have not announced details about their summer sales yet, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Who can shop on Prime Day?

Only Prime members get access to Amazon Prime Day deals.

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is the retailer’s loyalty program. A standard membership costs $139 a year or $15 a month, and new members get a 30-day free trial. Amazon also offers discounted student memberships and memberships for those who qualify for certain government assistance programs .

Benefits of a Prime membership include access to shop Prime Day deals and free, fast shipping, like free two-day, one-day and same-day delivery. Prime members also get a handful of streaming and entertainment perks, plus they can order groceries online through Whole Foods or Amazon Fresh .

Can you shop early Prime Day deals?

Yes, Prime members can shop for early deals as we get closer to the event. The best way to stay updated about early Prime Day deals is by downloading the Amazon app, which can notify you about sales in real-time.

What are the best deals to shop on Amazon Prime Day?

Products across all shopping categories are on sale during Prime Day, and shoppers won’t know exactly what’s available until the event starts. But looking at Prime Day bestsellers from previous years can give you a sense of the traditionally discounted items. For example, the most ordered items during Prime Day in July 2023 include the Amazon Fire TV Stick , Laneige Lip Glowy Balm , Apple AirPods , Bissell Little Green Portable Deep Cleaner and Alexa-enabled devices. Some of the best Prime Day discounts are Amazon’s Lightning Deals, flash sales that give shoppers a short window to purchase limited quantities of specific products.

Galapagos & Amazon

amazon tourism packages

Indulge in the extreme biodiversity of Ecuador on this 14-day Galapagos and Amazon Tour, perfect for explorers and luxury seekers alike. Explore the Andean highlands, cruise the mysterious Amazon, indulge all your senses in the beautiful Galapagos Islands for a true trip of a lifetime.

Explore the Andean Highlands and Quito

Your tour begins with explorations throughout the Andean Highlands, starting with Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve. Along with exploring the nature of the area, you’ll visit the artisan cities and colorful markets of Cotacachi and Otavalo as a special treat.

There’s still more to see in the Andean highlands, including the Rapture Rescue Center, where wounded birds are rehabilitated, and the true Equatorial line. Finally, walk the rim of an extinct volcano before heading back to Quito to tour its remarkable colonial city center.

Venture Into the Mysterious Amazon Rainforest

Landing in the Amazon city of Coca, you’ll board a motorized canoe for a 90-minute ride to your floating accommodations aboard the Manatee Amazon Explorer.

The 121-foot ship was built to cruise through this remote and biodiverse rainforest, offering comfort along the way. You’ll have your choice between the 14 spacious air-conditioned cabins onboard, four of which are Deluxe suites with whirlpool bathtubs.

While you may be deep in the thick rainforest, you don’t have to give up luxury. When not out exploring, enjoy the Rainforest Spa and Amazon Hot Tub while on board. Sip on a cocktail in the panoramic indoor lounge, and enjoy your meals either in the chic dining room or al-fresco in the outdoor lounge.

The observation deck is ideal for nighttime stargazing or relaxing during the day, and the Manatee Amazon Explorer offers satellite internet access, a rarity here in the rainforest.

You won’t want to miss experiencing all the Amazon has to offer though, so join in on nighttime rainforest walks, meet the local community, and gain treetop views from atop a canopy tower. Seek out the exotic wildlife also, including anacondas, giant otters, black caimans, and unique birdlife.

At the end of your Amazon cruise, you’ll once again board a motorized canoe for the trip back to Coca and your return flight to Quito.

Cruise the Galapagos Islands

After resting overnight in Quito, it’s finally time to fly to the famed Galapagos Islands! Once you arrive on Balta Island, you’ll soon board the luxury yacht, the Natural Paradise, your home for the last 3 nights of your Galapagos Amazon tour.

This 108-foot catamaran offers spacious staterooms and suites with private balconies to enjoy. You can also spend time on the panoramic sundeck , bar, or air-conditioned lounge.

Enjoy elegant expedition style cruising as the yacht makes its way to the various islands, including Santa Cruz and Genovesa.

Capture glimpses of various unique wildlife such as flamingos, iguanas, giant tortoises, and abundant birdlife. Don’t forget the incredible marine life also, such as giant tuna and rays, or the unique flora and fauna of the islands like the Opuntia cacti.

You’ll also have chances to disembark on the islands where you can hike through mangroves, watch as sea lions frolic in tidal pools, hike up steep, and swim or snorkel off gorgeous beaches.

As your Ecuador Amazon and Galapagos tour comes to an end, you’ll know the full biodiversity of this incredible country and may even start making plans to come back again soon.

Cuicocha Lake and Cotacachi

After collecting you from Quito airport, we take a drive to the Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve and embark on a short stroll through the reserve until the welcome center where we learn all about the flora and fauna of the area. We venture on to the beautiful Cuicocha lagoon, which was formed when an ancient volcano collapsed and formed a caldera. The result is a deep-blue crater lake on the lower southern flanks of Mount Cotacachi which makes for spectacular viewing, the diameter of its crater is about 3km, and the lake some 180 meters deep.

One of the unique aspects of this lake is the two islets in the middle of the lagoon which collapsed in from the sides of the caldera, leaving two spectacular islands right in the center of the lake. Its name comes from the Kichwa indigenous language and means “Lago del Cuy” or Guinea Pig Laguna in English. It was given this name due to the guinea pig shape of the largest Island in the middle of the laguna which you can see quite clearly from the viewing point. After the hike, we will stop at the picturesque colonial town of Cotacachi, famous for its leatherwork. Here you will find a great variety of stores with top-quality leather articles.

At lunch, we visit the town of Agato to learn more about the local community and their lifestyle and culture where we are privileged enough to be hosted by a local family with whom we enjoy a traditional lunch made with traditional ingredients. In the afternoon we will have the opportunity to see how the family produce handicrafts in the same exact manner that their ancestors have for centuries, using a back loom to weave intricate designs. This hand-woven technique produces products of outstanding delicacy and the end result is unique artisan products, the likes of which no machine or factory is able to replicate.

Visiting Otavalo Market

Today we visit the town of Otavalo, known throughout South America for its enormous and colorful market, and one of the most interesting towns in Ecuador. Still heavily populated by the local  Kichwa indigenous culture, the roots and modern development of the local community can be clearly seen. Here our guide gives you some history of the town, the people, and the market before allowing you to explore in-depth the market. Be sure to keep an eye out not only for the fine fabrics and clothing but also the traditional wooden carvings particular to this area of Ecuador. To help you finds your way around we provide you with a map of the market so you can be sure not to miss anything.

The market sellers adopt a bargaining stance, so do remember to practice your negotiation skills when buying handicrafts. The market itself, known colloquially as “Poncho Plaza”, is situated at the foot of the majestic Mt. Imbabura and once on the outskirts do take a moment to appreciate the striking surrounding landscape.

Raptor Rescue Center - Parque Cóndor

After a delicious breakfast, we embark on a picturesque trip and a destination with a difference. Condor Park is a rescue center for local avian species, acting as an education and rehabilitation center for wounded birds. Whilst the impressive Andean Condor, with its eight-foot wingspan, is the bird that gives this park its name, the park is host to a whole array of other avian species, particularly raptors, and acts as something of a mini zoo. For the brave of heart, you can don the glove and have one of the birds fly off and circle the surrounding sky before returning to you (not recommended for a bird the size of a condor though!) The bird handlers and staff will be happy to explain the little curiosities of each species and the fun facts that come with that, so expect to broaden your bird knowledge!

The birds of prey that you will see in this center are intrinsically linked to the local people and their centuries of tradition. To this end, you will learn the role each one plays in local folklore and tradition, and how some are venerated to almost god-like status. The center itself is situated atop a small mountain, some 20 minutes’ drive from Otavalo, and as such the journey up is an excursion in its own right as you marvel at the beautiful Andean mountainous surroundings.

As mentioned above, the bravest can take part in a fly-around where you man the glove and for the more cautious among the group you can observe as the bird handlers exercise these beautiful animals against the fantastic backdrop of the Andes.

City Tour & The Equatorial Line

A trip to Ecuador encapsulates a mix of history, fascinating indigenous cultures, slow winding rivers, and lush tropical forests, spectacular snowcapped volcanoes, and some of the most exciting wildlife on earth.

Our starting place today is the ‘Mitad del Mundo’, a site located just 45 minutes north of Quito, where a monument marks the equator at its closest point to the city. Archaeological evidence shows that both pre-Inca and Inca civilizations recognized and celebrated the equinox, the day the sun is directly over the equator. We make the 45-minute journey northwest to the equatorial line, where we will walk the rim of the extinct Pululahua volcanic crater. From there we visit the “Ciudad Mitad del Mundo” a group of buildings designed to explain the significance of the site, as well as the Ethnographic Initñam Museum, located right on the Equator. Here you will have the chance to plant your feet in two hemispheres at the same time!

Back in Quito, after lunch we will visit the city’s impressive colonial center, the reason Quito was the first city to be named a world heritage site. First on the agenda is a walk through the main plaza, the ‘plaza de la Independencia’, where you will see the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and some of the most important churches built around the XVI and XVII centuries, including the San Francisco Monastery, the first building built in the whole city. We wind down from a busy day’s sightseeing with an excursion all about chocolate! Ecuador’s unique equatorial climate provides the perfect environment for growing the world’s finest cocoa – Cacao Arriba. Cocoa has been revered in Latin America for over 5,000 years and Spanish explorers loved it so much they called it the ‘Food of the Gods’. Our chocolate experience starts with a guide explaining the history of cocoa in Ecuador, followed by a chocolate tasting.

Meals (B, L)

Quito with Cotopaxi erupting in background

Cotopaxi National Park

Cotopaxi is the most prominent and famous volcano in Ecuador and its almost symmetrical cone visible on the skyline from Quito. Rising to a height of over 12 thousand feet the volcano is part of a complex of volcanoes on the Ring of Fire and is home to one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world.

At the foot of the volcano is the entrance to the Cotopaxi National Park where we make a stop at the visitor center to learn about the exciting history of the Cotopaxi, past eruptions, and the impact those eruptions have had on the surrounding area, culture, and agriculture. The mountain’s colorful past also has had an impact geographically and this has, in turn, affected the wildlife. Our guide will explain how the volcano is central to life in the area and talk you through the unique characteristics of the local flora and fauna.

From there we visit Lake Limpiopungo which offers a chance for some spectacular sights. We take a walk around a part of the lake till we reach the perfect point to see the whole of Cotopaxi reflected in the lake as a mirror image. Quite often the low lying clouds can offer an additional dimension to this view and many a fantastic photograph has been taken from this viewpoint. If you feel like a longer walk, a 2-hour hike will take us to Mt. Cotopaxi’s J. Ribas refuge (4,800 m) where you will be able to enjoy spectacular views of the volcano and the surrounding Andean peaks.

Departing Quito & Cruise Embarkation

AM: You will arrive at Baltra Island in the morning. After passing through immigration and baggage claim, you will be met by the Natural Paradise staff and transferred to the yacht. You will be shown to your cabin where you will have some time to settle in before lunch and a welcome briefing.

PM: Accessible by bus from Puerto Ayora, the highlands of Santa Cruz are a deep green which contrasts beautifully with the dry, lower part of the islands. The predominant vegetation in the highlands is Scalesia trees which create a lush green forest. The lava tunnels, over half a mile long, are underground, and walking through them is a unique, surreal experience. At this place, you’ll have lunch.

You will visit “Fausto Llerena” Giant Tortoises Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity; this is home to tortoises ranging from 3-inches to 4-feet long adults. Subspecies of the giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The babies are kept until they are about four-years-old and strong enough to survive on their own.

El Barranco & Darwin Bay

AM:  In the morning, you will visit El Barranco which is also known as Prince Phillip’s Steps. It is a steep, rocky path that leads up to a high cliff-face. A marvelous view can be appreciated from here. This site is also home to palo santo vegetation as well as red-footed boobies, short-eared lava owls, Galapagos swallows, and Galapagos doves.

PM:  In the afternoon, you will visit the white-sand coral beach of Darwin Bay which heads a half-mile trail that winds through mangroves filled with land birds. Nazca boobies, red-footed boobies, and swallow-tailed gulls can be spotted here. Further down the path, we’ll find tidal pools where sea lions swim playfully. At the end is a spectacular view of a cliff.

Blue Footed Boobies rockery

Espumilla Beach, Buccaneer Cove & Egas Port

AM :In Espumilla Beach marine iguanas lounge and the Sally Lightfoot crabs attract the hunting herons performing the dance of predator and prey right before your eyes. Snorkeling is highly recommended as you could come face to face with an octopus, moray eel, shark, and a variety of other species of tropical fish.

PM:  Buccaneer Cove is a testament to the fact that Santiago Island was once a refuge for British buccaneers. These pirates would anchor in the protected bay to make repairs and stock up on tortoise meat among other things. The cliffs, where hundreds of seabirds perch in front of the dark red sand beach, are a magnificent sight.

Egas Port, also known as James Bay, on Santiago Island is home to the curious Galapagos hawks and quick-footed Galapagos lava lizards. The trail leads to the coastline with gorgeous tide pools and grottos full of fauna. Here the Galapagos fur seals bathe in the sun. This is also a great snorkeling site.

Sally Lightfoot Crab On A Lava Rock Galapagos

Bachas Beach & Disembarkation

AM : The morning visit, Bachas Beach, is located on the north shore of Santa Cruz. One of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier, can be seen here. You may see flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles also nest on the beach.

After this final visit, you will be transferred to Baltra airport in time for your flight back to the mainland.

When Carrie Clark got a phone call on April 17 from a veterinarian in California informing her that her cat, which had vanished from her Utah home a week earlier, had been found some 500 miles away, her first reaction was disbelief.

“I could not believe that it was true,” Ms. Clark said in an interview on Sunday night. “I told her: I think this is a prank.”

It wasn’t. Galena, her 6-year-old American shorthair, had sneaked inside a 3-by-3-foot cardboard Amazon returns package alongside five pairs of steel-toed boots. Then the cat was transported two states away to one of the company’s warehouses, where it was discovered by Amazon employees.

Galena survived the unexpected journey without any food or water, Ms. Clark said.

Despite her ordeal, Galena was in relatively good health with no issues apart from mild dehydration, Ms. Clark said. Two factors had helped: One seam on the box had come unglued, allowing oxygen to circulate, and mild weather kept Galena from overheating or freezing.

“It’s really a miracle that she was able to survive,” Ms. Clark said.

Ms. Clark said she thought that Galena got into the box while her husband was packing it, by jumping inside when he left to fetch some tape to seal it up.

“She doesn’t meow a lot and she loves boxes, so for her, she was really happy in that moment, I’m sure,” Ms. Clark said. “Although I’m sure that wasn’t the case later on.”

Since the box already weighed over 30 pounds, Ms. Clark and her husband, who live in the city of Lehi, near Salt Lake City, did not notice the added weight of a stowaway when they mailed it on April 10, she said.

But they did quickly notice that their shy, indoor cat was missing that same day. After days of searching the house and the neighborhood turned up nothing, worst-case scenarios started running through her mind, Ms Clark said. Had Galena darted outside without anyone noticing? Had she been snatched up by a predator? Or end up in the river behind the house?

“We had absolutely no idea what had happened,” Ms. Clark said. “It was really challenging; I was definitely in a lot of grief.”

Then she received the call from a veterinarian in Riverside, Calif. An Amazon employee, Brandy Hunter, had brought Galena in, and the veterinarian identified her through her microchip and contacted Ms. Clark.

Ms. Hunter, who could not immediately be reached for comment, said on Facebook that she received a call from co-workers who had opened a returns box and found a cat inside.

“We have gotten some pretty crazy things in my time but never anything like this!” Ms. Hunter wrote. She said she had driven to the warehouse to catch and look after the cat, which she said had spent days in the box “in the back of a trailer full of items being returned to Amazon.”

Amazon did not immediately respond to requests for comment. After products are dropped off at an Amazon returns center, they are inspected for damage and signs of use to determine if they can be re-listed for sale, according to the company.

When Ms. Clark got the call, she and her husband quickly booked a flight to California. The next day they arrived at the veterinarian’s clinic, where they were reunited with Galena.

“When I got to hold her again, she stopped shaking and knew that I was there for her,” Ms. Clark said. “It was such a miraculous moment.”

Insider Today

A Utah couple accidentally shipped their pet cat in an Amazon return package, trapping it in the box without food or water for six days.

The cat, named Galena, was eventually discovered safe and well in California, Utah's KSL-TV was the first to report.

Carrie Clark, one of the cat's owners, noticed the pet had gone missing on April 10, the outlet reported.

For nearly a week, Clark, along with family and friends, searched the couple's house and neighborhood and plastered missing posters around town hoping to locate the cat, KSL-TV reported.

"The anxiety and stress of not knowing what happened to her was excruciating," Clark told the outlet.

Clark then received a text notifying her that Galena's microchip had been scanned, and later that day, she received a call from a veterinarian in California.

"I didn't believe her at first and thought it was a prank," Clark told KSL-TV.

The shortest distance between Utah and California is several hundred miles.

The vet told Clark the cat was found inside an Amazon return package, alongside five pairs of steel-toed work boots.

"I ran to tell my husband that Galena was found, and we broke down upon realizing that she must have jumped into an oversized box that we shipped out the previous Wednesday," Clark said.

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, people increasingly turned to buying online instead of visiting brick-and-mortar stores.

The shift brought a big spike in the number of online returns in 2021, which has continued to rise, eMarketer said.

KSL-TV reported that the cat was rescued from the box after six days without food or water by an Amazon employee who found her in a warehouse and took her to the vet.

Clark and her husband then flew to California to be reunited with their cat.

"It was an amazing reunion! Galena instantly stopped shaking and relaxed in my arms when I got to hold her again," Clark said. "Despite being skinnier and some mild dehydration, her bloodwork was completely normal and she was completely unharmed!"

Clark said she hopes the story inspires all pet owners to microchip their pets.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says that one-third of pets will become lost at some point in their lives, but those with microchips are much more likely to be reunited with their owners.

A cat microchip typically costs between $40 and $70.

Clark didn't immediately respond to a BI request for comment.
