Auto RV leveling systems will typically cost between $2,000 and $5,000 for the system itself. If you want to have it professionally installed, you’ll typically be looking at installation fees of $500 to $1,000+, depending on the system, your RV, and where you have it done.

Auto leveling is something that many people overlook, especially in a first time RV purchase. As a full-timer living in a travel trailer that I move regularly, auto leveling is definitely something I wish I had! 

Essentially, auto leveling is an electronic option that can sense when your travel trailer is level, and automatically adjust your rig to achieve this level of stability. Auto leveling systems are different from power jack stands and electronic stabilizers, so this is something important to note as you shop. 

Getting a travel trailer level can be one of the most tedious aspects of owning a towable rig, and having an auto leveling system takes the guesswork out of this process. Some auto leveling systems are so advanced that they have 7 or more points of leveling throughout your trailer, giving you even more peace of mind that your RV will be level while you camp. 

Having a level travel trailer is key to any camping experience, both for comfortability and to ensure that your utility systems are working properly. If your travel trailer isn’t level, your water lines and propane systems may not work to their full effectiveness.

You may find that, during your RV search, there are very few travel trailers that have auto leveling systems installed as either standard features or optional ones. Many RV manufacturers reserve this unique and advanced amenity for fifth wheels or extremely large rigs, but what about the smaller travel trailer? 

The good news is, there are a number of auto leveling systems that you can purchase and install yourself, or with the help of an experienced RV repair person. However, this is not necessarily something you want to do after purchasing a brand new RV.

Keep in mind that, if it isn’t included in the standard price, there will be an additional cost incurred should you choose to purchase this optional feature. 

I only have a 19 foot travel trailer , but it still takes me a decent amount of time to get it level once I get to camp. An auto leveling system that’s already installed in your brand new RV will only make your transition into your brand new rig easier!

What to Consider in a Travel Trailer with Auto Leveling?

There are a number of things to consider in the travel trailer beside the fact that you want an auto leveling system. But what might some of those considerations be? Let’s take a closer look at how you can make an informed travel trailer purchase now. 

Length of Travel Trailer

One of the most important things for you to consider before buying an RV is just how long you want and need it to be. The longer the travel trailer, the more space you will have. However, the more you will have to tow as well! 

If you are brand new to towing, like I was when I purchased my 19 foot travel trailer, you should take some serious time to consider just how big you want your RV to be. While it may sound nice to have all the bells and whistles and plenty of square footage, you will be responsible for driving this size of an RV around. 

You can get travel trailers in just about any length, from 15 feet all the way to 45 feet. There are countless floor plan options and available amenities for RVs at any length, but it is important to note that you should feel safe while towing your new RV. 

Additionally, the longer the RV, the less likely you are to find convenient reservations for it. Many RV parks, state parks, and National Parks have length limits and limitations, whether you are camping or simply passing through. Once you get above 30 feet long , your reservation options get a bit more complicated! 

I highly recommend thinking about how much space you truly need, and if you are able to choose something smaller. If you are an RVing Pro, you have less to worry about and likely know exactly what you are looking for, but this is something to keep in mind if you are brand new to RVing! 

Layout and Floor Plan

Something that everyone needs to think about before making an RV purchase is the type of layout or floor plan they might be expecting. You should consider what your top needs are in a new travel trailer before you even start shopping. 

Perhaps you want a layout with a spacious kitchen, or you are hoping for something with an additional bathroom amenity. Maybe you are hoping to live full-time in it, and you need something with a designated bedroom or laundry facilities. 

Regardless of what you are looking for, there’s an option on the market for you. It’s just a matter of finding it, as well as making sure it is indeed what you are looking for! If you are able, I highly recommend touring a number of RVs in person, if it is at all possible. If this isn’t an option, most RV manufacturers have 360-degree video tours available on their website so that you can get a true feel for whatever RV has caught your eye! 

Sleeping and Bathroom Arrangements

Similarly to knowing what floor plan or layout you want, you should take some time and consider what sleeping and bathroom arrangements work best for you and your family. You may be looking for a particular number of beds, or perhaps you want more than one bathroom. 

Knowing how many guests you plan on sleeping inside of your RV on an average camping trip is extremely important. Most RVs offer convertible sofas or dining areas, giving you more beds at night than you have during the day. 

However, if you have multiple children or want to travel with a group of friends, having set beds and designated bedrooms may be something you are looking for. Additionally, you may want to seek out a travel trailer with a half-bathroom option if you think you need more than one. 

Weight of Travel Trailer

You may not know this, but proper weight distribution is key to achieving a level trailer, both while you are towing and while you are at camp. While an auto leveling system will alleviate this issue when you are parked, having an understanding of how to properly weigh down your travel trailer is key to owning one! 

Luxury Features

Many RV manufacturers make standard rigs as well as luxury ones, which means that you have another decision to make in terms of your furnishings and features. If you are considering auto leveling on your travel trailer because you plan on living in it full time, you may want to consider a few other full-time necessities on board your rig. Some of these include a larger refrigerator, washer and dryer hookups, a dedicated bedroom, and more. 

I would personally pay special attention to the kitchen and the bathroom, as these locations are sometimes neglected when it comes to RV living. Many people can purchase RVs only plan on using them a few days at a time, which means that these necessities may not be as complete as you want them to be. 

No matter what your priorities are, there’s an RV out there to suit your full-time lifestyle quite well. And, with an auto leveling system, you won’t have to waste your time leveling your RV, each and every time you leave camp! 

Ability to Boondock

Do you plan on ever camping off-grid in your brand new travel trailer with auto leveling? Also known as dry camping, boondocking is your ability to camp without RV hookups, such as water, electricity, and sewer. 

Some RVs are built with this in mind, and others are not. If you plan on boondocking with your travel trailer, you should keep an eye out for solar panel options, larger holding tanks, additional batteries, and more.

Best Overall:  Jayco Eagle

• Beautiful and residential interior 
• Packed with features, including weather protection 
• Auto leveling system available with other amenities 
• High price point and quite large 

There’s a lot to love about the Jayco Eagle, which is likely why it is one of the longest-running, most successful RVs on the market. While it starts at $75k, arguably a very high price tag, the Eagle is perfect for just about everyone- and has auto leveling as an optional feature.

Only available in a 40 foot long floor plan and weighing over 10,000 pounds, the Eagle may already not be right for you. However, it has three-floor plan choices that feel residential and spacious, and you can sleep up to 6 people in this one.

One of the first things you might notice upon walking into the Eagle, depending on the floor plan you choose, is the spacious kitchen. It has a generous 21 cubic foot refrigerator with a marble countertop island in the center. There’s even a walk-in pantry and plenty of rich wood cabinetry to fill up to your heart’s content! 

There’s plenty of seating in the living room for everyone, including theater seats that recline. You also have a couch that converts into an additional sleeping area, and a full entertainment center with an electric fireplace to keep the room cozy. 

Not only is this rig built to Jayco’s extensive safety standards and durability requirements, but it also has a number of optional features that you can add on. Some of these include heated holding tanks and storage compartments, outdoor kitchens, washer-dryer prep, and solar panels. You can truly make the Eagle whatever you want!

While the auto leveling system isn’t included as a standard feature, you can easily add it, along with a power jack stand and automatic stabilizers. All of these mechanisms work in tandem to make setting up camp a breeze, especially when you consider just how large the Jayco Eagle is. 

Speaking of, this seems to be the main drawback of the Eagle itself. It is very large and very heavy, which means it might be too big for your current tow vehicle to handle. However, if you are looking for a travel trailer that can do it all and last a lifetime, you should definitely give the Eagle a chance. 

Best on a Budget: Forest River Rockwood

• Multiple floor plans across multiple lengths
• Tons of optional features including auto leveling 
• Great for couples just as well as families

With 7 available floor plans, all capable of having optional electronic auto leveling, there’s a lot to love about the Forest River Rockwood. This travel trailer starts at 29 feet in length and reaches just shy of 37 feet, making it smaller and easier to drive as well. Let’s talk about some other great features of this RV now. 

The Rockwood utilizes a number of slide outs in order to make these RVs spacious and feel like home. Even the smallest option has a king size bed, a spacious bathroom, and an open living floor plan that makes you forget you’re not in your residential house. 

While the interior design isn’t anything to write home about, it is clean, bright, and easy to maintain. You can choose from a few interior design options, and you can always bring in decor to make it your own. Some floor plans even have electric fireplaces in the living area, bringing in more personality. 

Speaking of floor plans, this RV is not only budget-friendly but family-friendly as well. There’s an option to have a master suite as well as a 4 bunk bed bunk house, which means you have plenty of space for the kiddos or all of your friends. There’s even an outdoor kitchen on this particular floor plan so that you have the option to enjoy outside just as much as in.

The auto leveling system may not be the only option that you are interested in. You can get solar panels and an inverter, an additional bedroom air conditioning unit, a large residential refrigerator, and multiple different living room seating options, should your budget support this. 

But what might be the catch on this particular travel trailer? Forest River may not have the best reputation in everyone’s eyes, especially in recent years. However, they are still a reputable company and have a lot to offer their consumers, especially when on a budget. However, I highly recommend reading our full review of Forest River before you make your final decision. 

Most Compact: Forest River Flagstaff

• Plenty of floor plans to choose from 
• Loads of storage so that you can bring everything 
• Sleeping arrangements for 5 to 7 people 
• Forest River brand sometimes gets a bad rap 

Similar to the Rockwood, the Flagstaff by Forest River also has 7 available floor plans in a variety of styles and needs. You can find floor plans built for couples , bunkhouse floor plans made for families, and unique living areas full of couches that convert into beds. Plus, you can get some of these floor plans under 30 feet in length. Let’s check out the Flagstaff now. 

With auto leveling as an optional feature, you can get the Flagstaff under 10,000 pounds. While it is just barely under this weight, there’s a lot to love about this sturdy RV. One of its main selling points has to be its storage capabilities, with plenty of storage inside and out. There are large exterior compartments for everything that doesn’t fit inside. 

Plus, Forest River has thought about the locations of the windows on this RV, as well as where the furniture is placed. They’ve taken time to highlight the great outdoors, without you needing to leave the comforting interior of your RV. This is ideal for days when the weather isn’t quite optimal.

There’s molding and wood throughout this RV, and there’s even an electric fireplace on some floor plans. You can expect plenty of sleeping arrangements for everyone who might be traveling with you, depending on the floor plan you choose. For the most part, you can sleep more than six people in the majority of these options. 

Besides the Forest River brand name, there’s not much sticking out that’s a negative for this particular RV. It has a lot to offer, especially for those of you looking for something under 30 ft in length. You can still get it with an auto leveling system, no problem! 

Best for Families: KZ Sportsmen

• Unique floor plans made for families and couples 
• Spacious and modern interior design 
• Some floor plans can sleep up to 10 people 
• Brand awareness seems minimal 

KZ RV isn’t as well known as some of the other brands on this list, but the Sportsmen has some fantastic floor plan options. Under 10,000 pounds and 40-41 feet in length, the Sportsmen is big enough for the whole family. Let’s look at it in more detail now.

There are four available floor plans on Sportsmen, and they can sleep anywhere from 4 to 10 people, depending. There’s a spacious floor plan designed for the full timing couple, with washer and dryer prep, a large walk around king bed, and a spacious living dining area complete with Theater seating and a kitchen island. 

If you are hoping for something bigger, whether it’s for your large family or for your group of friends, there is a floor plan with four different bunk beds, a pullout sofa, as well as a king bed. This means you don’t have to sacrifice your sleeping arrangements to fit everyone. The whole family will be comfortable in this RV! 

In terms of the interior design, everything is well appointed and modern, with electric fireplaces and marble countertops. There’s even a floor plan with 2 King beds if you are traveling with another couple or perhaps have older children in your life. KZ RV has thought of just about everything you might need, and it’s nice to see some unique floor plans in the mix! 

While it doesn’t come standard, you can get optional four point auto leveling installed, no problem. That’s why auto leveling is also not mentioned in the video. KZ offers a pretty comprehensive warranty plan too. However, given the lack of popularity with this brand, you may find better options elsewhere.

Best for Full-Timers: Keystone Outback

• Beautiful interior design that feels residential 
• Plenty of floor plan options, including four with a washer and dryer 
• Heavy duty, but not too heavy 
• Optional features may drive up the price 

With 7 floor plans all in the 8000 pound range, the Keystone Outback is a travel trailer that has a lot to offer. Again, the auto leveling feature does not come standard, but you can get it added on along with many other fantastic options. Let’s check them out now. 

Keystone has become a powerhouse in the RV business, known for its fifth wheels and travel trailers. They incorporate a sense of stability with their heavy duty RVs, alongside beautiful interior design and features that all RVers are looking for, both new and experienced.

Four out of the seven available floor plans have washer and dryer prep , along with some other great full-time features, such as residential size kitchens and bathrooms. You can find a king bed in some of the floor plans, and one floor plan even features a spacious rear den, perfect for creating an office while on the road. 

The interior design on this rig is unique and beautiful, with black or brown wooden cabinetry and gold handled accents. You can get an electric fireplace and leather seating, should you so choose, which may make it feel even more like home.

The lowest priced floor plan is an optional garage toy hauler hybrid, starting at $67k. This price point is decent, especially for what you are getting. All of these floor plans are priced under $70k, making them a smart investment if you are planning on living full-time in an RV for the first time. 

Keep in mind that Keystone offers a variety of optional features that won’t be included in the standard price. Auto leveling included, you may also be interested in adding solar panels, additional air conditioning units, storage racks, and much more. Keep in mind this will drive up that initial purchase price though. 

Most Luxurious: Venture RV SportTrek Touring

• Super unique floor plans for just about everyone 
• Luxurious interior design with multiple fireplaces 
• App-based electronic leveling system gives you more time at camp 
• Expensive, especially for a smaller travel trailer 

If you thought KZ RV was relatively unknown, check out this option from Venture RV. The SportTrek Touring travel trailer has auto leveling as an option, and for good reason. Ranging in weight from 7,000-9,000 pounds , you’ll want something easy to get you set up. Let’s talk about this luxury RV now.

One of the best things about the SportTrek Touring is the fact that it has nine available floor plans, all of which are under 39 feet. Some floor plans sleep as few as four people, while one available floor plan with multiple bunk beds can sleep up to 12 people. Yes, you read that right- Venture RV has thought about just how many people you might want to bring along with you! 

One of the coolest things about this particular RV’s interior design is that it has multiple electric fireplaces on multiple floor plans. You get one in the living room, and one in the primary bedroom, giving you even more intimacy and space from the rest of the group. Some of these floor plans are truly unique and fantastic, especially if you were looking for something different. 

It’s also impressive that you can fit all of this in an RV that’s under 40 feet long, something that seems rarer and rarer these days. You can still get an outdoor kitchen, spacious bathrooms, and kitchens that rival residential ones, but the price point may be high on this particular RV. 

Lightest Weight:  Keystone Cougar Half-Ton

• A dizzying amount of floor plans across multiple lengths
• Lightweight and easier to tow
• Fair price point, considering what you’re getting
• Interior design is just so-so 

Did you know that the Cougar Half-Ton from Keystone weighs anywhere from 5,000-8,000 pounds? This is ideal for those of you with tow vehicles that can’t quite handle some of the larger rigs on this list. And there’s plenty to love about this RV! Let’s talk about it now.

One of the most important things to know about the Cougar is the fact that it has 23 available floor plans, across 27-37 feet lengths. I see this travel trailer just about everywhere, as it is extremely popular, among many different walks of life. This is likely because it has so many floor plans, and the price is fair for what you are getting. 

While the larger floor plans creep above $70k, you can get smaller models for less than $50k, making it affordable and possible to add on other options. Auto leveling is one of those options, and you’ll want it with this RV for sure. The Cougar will be easier to drive than other options on this list, and you might as well save even more time once you get to camp!

Just like the SportTrek, you can sleep up to 12 people in the largest floor plan offered by Keystone. There are floor plans perfect for couples, multiple bunkhouse options , and plenty of choices for those of you considering living full-time in your RV.

You can even get the Cougar outfitted for boondocking, as it has larger holding tanks than normal and is prepped for solar. Keystone will install solar panels for you if you want to pay for it, making this travel trailer one of the most versatile on this list. The catch? You may need to make the interior design more inviting, but even so, it is modern and bright! 

Final Thoughts

Finding a travel trailer with auto leveling features installed as either standard or optional amenities can be difficult. We’ve scoured the RV marketplace and found some of the best options for you, including ones that value auto leveling from the start. 

If none of these RVs are quite what you’re looking for, keep in mind that you can always install auto leveling onto your RV after the fact. However, many people overlook the convenience and ease that an auto leveling system can offer them, so you’re making the right choice by pursuing it from the beginning!

What is the difference between rv leveling jacks and rv stabilizer jacks, leveling jacks.

Leveling jacks are designed to do part of the heavy lifting with your RV or trailer by helping to do the work of getting your RV level. Leveling jacks are built to support the weight of your trailer, whether in its entirety or partially, and will raise your RV up at various points to make your RV level in all directions. 

There are two types of RV leveling jacks: tongue jacks and body jacks.

While both are designed to assist you in making your RV level on uneven surfaces, each does so with different approaches. Let’s take a look at both of those types of leveling jacks.

Tongue Jacks

Tongue jacks are found primarily on travel trailers. They are used to raise your travel trailer up off of the hitch of your tow vehicle and then raise or lower the front end of your travel trailer to help bring it to a point of being level front to back. Tongue jacks on travel trailers can be either manual or electric, operated either by a crank handle, the push of a button, or the flip of a switch.

The load capacity will dictate that sometimes, but upgrading to an electric model such as the Lippert electric tongue jack is an upgrade that many RV owners choose to make leveling a faster and easier process for them. If you prefer the ease and simplicity of a manual crank tongue jack, there are options available for all sizes of trailers as well. 

One benefit of the crank handle style is that you can raise and lower the tongue of the trailer precisely, even down to the tiniest adjustment, which may prove more challenging with an electric model.

An electric model, however, does require significantly less physical effort to use. This is a consideration to also weigh as you choose which is right for you.

Body jacks are found on many types of RVs. 5th wheels have these body jacks in the front of the RV, almost always, which helps with front to back leveling of the RV. 

Some RVs also come equipped with automatic leveling systems which are body jacks with either four jacks or six jacks that connect from the frame of the RV to the ground, allowing for the full weight of the RV to be distributed across the leveling jacks.

This allows for leveling both front to back as well as side to side of the RV utilizing the body jacks. Both travel trailers and 5th wheels can come equipped with an automatic leveling system.

Do All RVs Have Stabilizers?

While stabilizers are necessary for the safety of your RV when parked, not all RVs come with stabilizers installed. How To Install RV Stabilizers?

While some stabilizers are designed to be portable and stored away when not in use, many RV stabilizers can be permanently mounted to the frame of your RV. 

Before you begin, gather all of the required materials and mounting hardware that are included with or on the recommended supply list for your specific brand and model of RV stabilizers. 

This might include mounting screws, bolts, nuts, a hex magnetic socket, or power drill or impact driver. For scissors jacks, you’ll choose either the four corners of the RV’s frame or three points on each side of the RV’s frame, equally distributed from front to back as points of attachment.

Using the mounting screws or bolts, attach each to the frame and then extend the stabilizers to the ground and ensure that each is securely attached and firmly holding the RV in place. 

While these stabilizers are not holding the full weight capacity of the RV, they should be minimizing movement and helping prevent the RV from rolling from where it is parked.

The weight load capacity of each stabilizer leg will determine if a four point system or a six point system is required for your RV, however, the more points of connection with the ground, the more solid the stabilizer system will be. 

If it fits your RV and your budget, opting for a six-point stabilizer system will lend itself to a significantly more solid and stable base for your RV.

RV Leveling Blocks

For the many RVs that are not equipped with auto leveling systems, leveling blocks are the most common method of bringing an RV to a point of being level when on uneven ground. There are several brands on the market including Camco and Lynx leveling blocks. 

They are all designed similarly, with plastic interlocking blocks that you can securely build up in order to drive your RV up on. When adjusted to the degree of leveling that needs to take place in order to bring your RV to level, it provides a stable base to park on while leveling your RV from side to side. 

There is a maximum weight capacity for these leveling blocks.

While that is rarely an issue for travel trailers, 5th wheels or toy haulers, larger rigs such as motorhomes or buses do need to compare the maximum weight capacity of the RV leveling blocks with that of their rig in order to ensure safe use of the leveling blocks. 

Additionally, these leveling blocks work really well for one, two, or even three levels of blocks, but if you find that you need a greater number of levels in order to bring your RV to the point of being level, the stability of the stack of blocks will be compromised. 

It is likely that you will need to seek an alternative solution, including adjusting the orientation or location when you are parking the RV.

The Types Of RV Stabilizers

Scissor stabilizers.

Scissor stabilizers are the most common stabilizers for RVs. These are sometimes portable and often frame-mounted, metal with powder coating to prevent oxidation and can be either manually adjusted with a crank handle or drill or automatically adjusted if connected to an electric or hydraulic system when permanently mounted to the RV. 

These fold up and extend out much like scissors open and close, which is how they get the name. Scissors stabilizers do much of the heavy lifting work to keep the RV stable with their four jack or six jack systems.

Stand jack stabilizers are a portable option that is great for smaller, lightweight travel trailers or utility trailers which might have limited storage space. These sets of two or four aluminum jack stands nest into one another for storage and are lightweight. 

When in use, you place one stand jack under each corner of the RV’s frame, much like a scissors jack. The difference with a stand jack is that it is always manually adjusted with a single large bolt that screws up from the stand jack to connect with the frame of the RV.

The base of the stand jack is a square, creating a solid footprint on each corner of the trailer which helps stabilize it and minimize movement. For larger trailers, these can provide additional stabilization along the sides of the frame for RVs that already have a four point stabilization system, should the owner want to add more stabilization points.

Angle Arm Stabilizers

An angle arm stabilizer is an electric or hydraulic stabilizer that is permanently mounted to a travel trailer, 5th wheel, or motorhome. These come in pairs which are flush mounted to the frame of the RV, and extend down to make contact with the ground. The nature of the angles provides a firm base, which can significantly serve to stabilize the RV.

Most often found on travel trailers or 5th wheels which do not come equipped with auto leveling systems, these provide excellent stability for the back end of a 5th wheel which might have leveling jacks on the front end of the trailer or for the back as well as sometimes the front stabilization of travel trailers with a leveling jack on the tongue of the trailer. 

A benefit of these angle arm stabilizers is that each side can be adjusted manually to provide the best angle for connection with the ground if parked on an uneven surface, such as when you need to park on leveling blocks to bring the RV to be level from side to side.

When not in use, these angle arm stabilizers raise up to be nearly flush with the frame, making the ground clearance for these stabilizers high and of minimal concern for RVs that have drop frames or who take their trailers off-road when every inch of ground clearance matters.

Universal RV Stabilizers

Universal RV stabilizers are an excellent option for providing additional stabilization for all RV types. There are several examples of such which work universally for travel trailers, 5th wheels, motorhomes, and even utility trailers.

Once properly adjusted, the king pin tripod has three additional points on the ground attached to an additional connection point with the trailer to significantly increase the stability of the trailer. 

While this is not intended to replace other lines of stability through the four or six point stabilizer jacks on the frame of the trailer, it can reduce movement and bounce in the trailer similar to many of the universal stabilizer jack options.

If you have children or active pets, you might want to add an additional level of stabilization with X-chocks, Valterra RV stabilizer arms, or a king pin tripod if you have a 5th wheel. Large, heavyweight motorhomes will likely require an auto leveling system or heavy duty steel stabilizers mounted to the frame of the motorhome in order to securely and properly stabilize the rig.

Unfortunately, the simple stand jack option that is perfect for a 5,000 pound travel trailer will not work as effectively on the 20,000 pound toy hauler. Similarly, the auto leveling system that works beautifully for that 20,000 pound toy hauler fifth wheel will likely not fit at all on the 5,000 pound travel trailer. 

Size and weight absolutely do matter when choosing the system that is best for you.

The materials are also important in choosing which stabilization system is right for your RV. Smaller RVs with limited space and cargo weight capacity would quickly find themselves overloaded with heavy duty steel stabilizers, which are likely unnecessary and would often be considered overkill for small travel trailers and utility trailers. 

However, similarly, a large 5th wheel or motorhome which is relying solely on simple aluminum jack stands is probably not going to be very stable and those stand jacks could quickly find themselves compromised under the weight of a heavy toy hauler or motorhome.

The best RV stabilizer jacks are the ones best suited for your particular RV, and that will vary from one RV to the next. This can also vary from one owner to the next. 

For the owner who will be taking their RV off-road or to the seashore where the elements are likely to be more rough on their equipment, powder coated heavy duty steel or aluminum are going to be a better choice for that owner. For the RV owner who plans to only park in RV parks with clean, level camping pads, this is less of a necessity.

Once properly adjusted, the king pin tripod has three additional points on the ground attached to an additional point of connection with the trailer to significantly increase the stability of the trailer.

While this is not intended to replace other lines of stability through the four or six point stabilizer jacks on the frame of the trailer, it can reduce movement and bounce in the trailer similarly to many of the universal stabilizer jack options. 

The Camco king pin stabilizer folds up easily to fit in a storage bay when not in use. Most owners find that they use the king pin stabilizer most of the time because it significantly improves the overall stability of their rig.

Perhaps the most controversial of all stabilizers is the Dumble slide out stabilizers. These slide out supports are individual jacks that are designed to support the slide out bracing and help stabilize the slide outs of your trailer. 

When securely and properly engaged, these slide out stabilizers eliminate bounce and movement in the slide out, which for RVers with children or active pets can be quite significant.

However, the controversy here lies in how supporting the slide out affects the frame of the trailer. Some argue that by supporting the slide out with an aftermarket slide out stabilizer this transfers the impact of movement to the frame of the trailer. 

While little evidence supports this in practice, it is important to consider that with every change that is made in the engineering of an RV, it does affect other aspects of the design.

If you are eliminating bounce in the slide outs with slide out stabilizers, it is equally important to support the frame in other areas so that the movement is not simply shifted back to the frame.

Drop Down Jack Stabilizers

Drop down jack stabilizers are a relatively open collection of stabilizer types. 

These are jacks which are permanently affixed to the frame of the trailer and fold up or raise up either manually or automatically when the RV is in motion. Then when the RV is parked they drop down either manually or automatically to provide an impact point with the ground to stabilize the RV. 

Some examples of this are angle arm jacks, often found on travel trailers or fifth wheels, and telescoping stabilizer jack legs.

One benefit of these are the ease of use. They are permanently installed, making even manual drop down jack stabilizers quick to employ when you park your RV. 

Upgrading from manual to automatic is something that a service center or RV tech can easily do, and there are also kits that the DIYer can pick up to do on their own, should they feel up to the challenge.

The words are used interchangeably. However, stabilizers and leveling jacks are not the same nor have the same purpose. The stabilizers do not level the trailer, they just keep it steady so it does not rock on you. Levelers only add a little stability after getting your trailer level so all appliances can be used right.

One of these trailers is the Jayco Eagle. It comes with an auto-leveling system and a lot of other features. However, it weighs around 10,000 pounds and only comes in a 40-foot length. This trailer may be too big and heavy for some people.

Do Any Travel Trailers Come With Auto Leveling?

Yes, this is a feature that you will find on a variety of travel trailers. But you should be forewarned that not every trailer model will have this system built into it. You would have to talk with the dealers or read the brochures to find out which models and brands have this feature.

Also, auto-leveling may not be a standard feature. It may be listed as optional equipment so make sure to read all areas of the specs sheets to find out if this is so.

The reason you are finding more travel trailers with auto leveling systems or optional equipment is that many people do not want to do the hard work of setting up their campsite.

According to the CEO of Lippert Components, RV owners are now expecting to simply push a button and have their camp set up for them instead of spending 35 to 40 minutes doing it themselves.

They want to enjoy their camping time not spend it working to get it set up properly. Whether that is a good or bad attitude is a topic for some other time.

List Of Travel Trailers With Automatic Leveling

This is not going to be an exhaustive list as there are probably far more trailers with auto leveling than the ones we place here. This list will include those models that have auto leveling as an optional feature.

1. Jayco Eagle- this model of the trailer only comes in a 40-foot length and costs about $75,000. You can get this trailer in one of 3 floor plans and its standout feature is the spacious kitchen.

Auto leveling takes a back seat to that room as well as the 21 cubic foot fridge. Auto leveling is an optional feature as are the power jacks & automatic stabilizers.

Just a push of a button should have all of these systems working together to make sure your trailer is stable and level. Because it is large and heavy, it may be too much trailer for your tow vehicle.

2. Forest R iver Rockwood - 7 floor plans make your interior decision a bit more difficult to make. But the good news is that this trailer option comes in sizes between 29 and 37 feet.

Auto leveling is also optional equipment on these models of the Rockwood as are solar panels, air conditioning, and a lot more. How you dress it up is up to you and you get plenty of options to make your camping time more comfortable.

There are also a few added slide-outs to add to your living space and give you room to breathe.

3. Forest River Flagstaff - this is a sturdy trailer that is built with up to 7 different floor plans. This trailer does weigh slightly under 10,000 pounds but it is packed full of everything you need.

Auto leveling is not standard on any of these floor plans either. So if you want it, you have to order it and add the price to your overall costs for the trailer. What makes this trailer unique is that you can buy one design if there are just the two of you or you can buy another if you have kids.

4. KZ Sportsmen - when you want length, this is the RV trailer brand to buy. This model ranges between 40 and 41 feet in length and comes with a variety of floor plans to meet your daily living needs.

If you want guests to stay over or have the kids along for the holiday, then this model can sleep between 4 and 10 people. You won’t find auto leveling mentioned in videos or brochures about this trailer as it is an optional feature as well.

Just make sure to order it when you decide to buy along with other optional features you would enjoy.

5. Keystone Outback - weighing around 8000 pounds in each of its 7 floor plans, you are getting a great trailer that should be easy to tow. Each floor plan has its own unique features like washer and dryer prep areas, king size beds, and so on.

Like all the other trailers on this list, auto leveling is not standard but optional. There may be a good reason why this is the current trend and that reason may be due to the fact that not everyone wants it.

Some people like setting up the old-fashioned way. It is still a good trailer with or without auto-leveling.

6. Venture RV SportTrek Touring - All of the 9 floor plans available for this model are under 39 feet in length. That shorter length does not stop the company from making this trailer to sleep up to 12 people.

The weight class for these trailer sizes is in the 7000 to 9000-pound category. This should make for more comfortable towing. However, auto leveling is also not a standard feature on this trailer model.

The drawback to this trailer is its high price. You may not want to add the auto leveling system once you see how much the trailer costs.

7. Keystone Cougar Half-Ton - Your tow vehicle should be able to handle all of the models in this series. The weight of the trailer is between 5000 and 8000 pounds and you have 23 floor plans to choose from.

The overall lengths of this model series are between 27 and 37 feet. Despite the wide variety in size, floor plans, and weight, auto leveling is still an optional feature. This system would be a good feature to add as it makes sure your investment is protected.

On top of all this, you can sleep up to 12 in some of those floor plans.

Can You Add Auto-Leveling To a Travel Trailer?

Yes, this is possible and some owners have already done this. LCI or Lippert Components also makes an auto-leveling system you can have installed after you make your purchase.

If you are good with tools and know how to do drill, installation should not be an all-day chore. But in most cases, it is probably best to let experienced professional hands handle this task.

They will have all the tools and accessories needed and can make a difficult job seem easy. Check around to see who else, besides LCI, makes and sells this much needed RV equipment.

Keeping your trailer level is important as your fridge depends on being level to work right, as do other appliances. All the instructions should be included in your purchase so you can get the auto leveling system set up right.

The key to adding your own will be to make sure your trailer is not too heavy. Lippert’s system seems to have a 10,000-pound weight limit.

Adding Auto Leveling To Travel Trailer

This is one of the keys to adding an auto-leveling system to your trailer. You have to watch for the weight limit. These systems are not built for every trailer and there will be some that are just too heavy for the auto levelers to do their job.

Lippert sells 2 models of this system. One can hold up to 15,500pounds and is made for 5th wheel trailers. The other one has a capacity of 10,000 pounds and is made for most small trailers.

The cost of these systems will be the biggest problem. They are priced at approx. $4700 and $4400 respectively. There may be variations of these two models at Lippert as well.

You may be able to find systems cheaper than the price at Lippert’s store but you should expect to pay anywhere between $500 and $1000 for installation, no matter the system.

Adding this feature may save you a lot of work but it is also another big investment. It is a lot of money to put out for one system.

Why Install an Auto Leveling System

This is a very big question as the investment in one of these systems can really ding your bank account. No matter their cost and the price of installation, they are a big help when you made a bigger investment in your RV or trailer.

The main reason anyone gets these systems is that it saves time and frustration. Everything is done for you at a touch of a button. There is no step by step procedures to follow anymore.

These systems are designed to get to the perfect level every time. The only drawback is that the ground may not cooperate all the time. If the slope is too much, you may need to put pads down so that the jacks are not over extended.

Adding them to your travel trailer shouldn’t take more than one day so you won’t lose any travel time. Just be aware that the process may be slow from start to finish.

The slow speed is necessary to make sure the system does not break on you when it hits some rough ground. By rough ground, we mean uneven ground that can make it difficult to level any trailer.

The good news about this is that you can easily find replacement parts through the different companies that make these systems. When will you need to find replacement parts?

That is something that is never known but you can plan ahead and have a couple of key pieces on hand or a list of parts and accessory outlets that stock the parts you will need.

Some Final Words

While auto leveling systems make camping a lot easier, not everyone can afford them. They are high priced items and you will need to assess your RV situation. If you are permanently set up, then you may not need this system at all.

However, if you are the wandering type that camps in different places for a short time, then these systems will help you out and make your camp life a lot easier. They should pay for themselves eventually.
