1. Open the Safari browser.

2. In the top toolbar, select "Safari" and then "Preferences."

3. Toggle over to the "Autofill" section in the pop-up.

4. Click the "Edit" button next to the desired autofill category, like passwords or credit cards, to set up your autofill in Safari.

When you click the edit button, you may have to enter your Mac's password to get to the next screen. After that, you'd simply click the "Add" button, where available, to start adding your passwords and other pieces of information to the autofill feature.

This article explains how to use the Safari AutoFill feature to populate data whenever the browser detects a form. Information in this article applies to Macs with macOS Catalina (10.15) through OS X Yosemite (10.10).

How to Use AutoFill in Safari

AutoFill information is potentially sensitive, so it is essential that you understand how to manage it. You can turn on specific types of information to be used in AutoFill or turn off all the options completely. Safari provides an easy-to-use interface to manage your AutoFill information.

Open Safari, go to the Safari menu, and select Preferences .

The keyboard shortcut to open Safari preferences is Command + , (comma).

In the General preferences screen, select the AutoFill tab.

Place a check next to any of the four AutoFill options you want to use when auto-filling forms on the internet.

To prevent Safari from using any of these four categories to autopopulate a web form, click the corresponding check mark to remove it.

To view or modify the saved information used by AutoFill in a particular category, select the Edit button to the right of its name. When you do, you are prompted to enter your user password. This protects the information in AutoFill from prying eyes.

Why Use AutoFill

Entering information into web forms can be a tedious exercise, especially if you do much online shopping . It is even more frustrating when you type the same information over and over again, such as your address and credit card details. Safari provides an AutoFill feature that stores this data on your device and populates it whenever the browser detects a form.

The four types of information are:

Using information from my contacts : Completes forms with the information from a contact card in the Contacts app.
User names and passwords : Safely saves the passwords and usernames you enter on web pages and uses these again when you revisit the same web pages.
Credit cards : Safely saves your credit card number, name, and expiration date and uses the information when you use the card again. You can add new credit cards, remove old ones, and edit your card information here.
Other forms : Saves other information you enter on web pages to fill it in when you revisit the same web pages. Click Edit to see what is saved or to edit it.

You can choose to edit or remove AutoFill entries on a site-by-site basis at any time.

If you have Touch ID on your Mac, use it to fill in AutoFill names, passwords, and credit card information that it selects from the Safari preferences AutoFill tab.

How to Use AutoFill in Safari on Mac

You can save time when filling out forms on Safari thanks to the excellent AutoFill feature. Here's everything you need to know.

If you’re like most people, you probably don’t remember the login to every online account you have, or recall most of your credit card information. You might have to refer to a saved note to remember your username and password, or have to pull out your credit card every time you need to use it to make a purchase online.

It can be tedious to have to enter that information repeatedly. Thankfully, a Safari feature called AutoFill makes saving and filling in information like login credentials or a credit card simple. We're going to show you how to use it.

What Is AutoFill?

AutoFill is a feature in Safari that allows you to automatically fill out web forms. The first time you fill out a form, AutoFill prompts you to save that information, which you can then re-use every time you fill out the same or similar form. This gets stored locally in Safari by default and in your iCloud Keychain (if you have that enabled.) We've explained the basics of using iCloud Keychain if you're not familiar.

When you are filling out fields in an online shopping cart, or you can’t remember your password to your Netflix account, AutoFill populates the fields with a click. It's incredibly useful in time-sensitive situations, such as when you need to order a ticket for a concert that will sell out quickly. No more time wasted having to enter your information manually.

What Information Can You Use With AutoFill?

AutoFill allows you to use multiple types of information. You can use information such as a username and password to an online account, credit card information, and it allows you to input information from your contacts. AutoFill also allows you to use other information that you may have entered on other forms. That way, when you revisit that website, you don’t have to try to remember the information.

How to Add a Username, Password, and Credit Card to Safari

Adding an account’s username and password through AutoFill is a straightforward process. To add a username and password:

Open Safari on your Mac.
Click on Safari in the Menu Bar , then click Preferences .
Next, click on AutoFill .
You will now see the multiple AutoFill Forms. Click Edit next to Usernames and passwords .
Enter your Mac’s password or scan your fingerprint to proceed.
Click the + symbol .
You can now enter the website’s name, your username, and the password.
Next, click Add Password .

If you would like to add a credit card through AutoFill, the process is similar to adding an account login. To add a credit card:

In the AutoFill tab , click Edit next to Credit cards .
Enter your password or scan your fingerprint to continue.
Click Add .
You can now fill in a description for the card that you want to add, the cardholder name, card number, and the expiration date.
Once you have entered that information, click Done .

Now that you have added your login information or your credit card, you’re all set. Next time you go to the website to log in or need to enter your credit card, Safari will prompt you to automatically fill in the fields with that information when you click on the web form.

How to Remove or Change Saved AutoFill Information

There may be times when you would like to remove an account, or maybe you received a compromised password alert from Safari and would now like to update the password for AutoFill. Normally, it prompts you to save the new password automatically, but you can also do it manually. You can do this within the Passwords tab in Safari preferences.

In Preferences , click Passwords .
Select the website that is associated with your account.
Click Edit .
If you would like to update the information, simply remove the old login and enter the new information, then click Save .
If you want to delete the login altogether, instead of hitting Save , click Delete Password .
Click Delete Password again .

Can You Use AutoFill Across Apple Devices?

AutoFill information will be accessible on all of your Apple devices if you have iCloud Keychain enabled. You also need to be logged in to the same Apple ID. This means that if you try to sign in to an account on your iPhone that you saved on your Mac, Safari on your phone will automatically offer AutoFill's assistance. In addition to that, any updates or changes made through AutoFill will be saved and shared across your devices.

Safari's AutoFill will automatically complete information for contacts, passwords, credit cards and more. Today we're going to discuss how to turn off or edit those AutoFill entries on macOS and iOS.

Whenever any form data is autofilled, Safari highlights them in yellow.

To turn off any or all AutoFill forms in Safari on macOS, first open Safari's preferences from the Safari menu or press Command+, on your keyboard.

In Safari's preferences, click the AutoFill tab You'll see a list of the things Safari can autofill.

Uncheck any items you don't want Safari autofilling, or click "Edit" next to any of the four items to change the actual data Safari has saved. This includes:

Using info from my contacts : When you start typing any personal information about you, or any other person in your Contacts, into a form (name, address, phone number, etc.), Safari will autofill the blanks.
User names and passwords : Clicking "Edit" will simply switch to the Passwords tab, which will let you amend any of your login information contained therein.
Credit cards : This will open a credit card dialog allowing you add or remove payment information. Double-click on an entry to update a credit card's information including the cardholder's name, card number, and expiration date. Before you can edit any sensitive data, you will have to enter your system password.
Other forms : Click the other forms "Edit" button to edit or remove any or all form data you have saved for a particular website. This is particularly useful if you frequently visit a website with forms you need to fill in time after time with the same information.

Safari on iOS can also fill in form data automatically. To access the AutoFill settings on iOS, open the Settings and tap "Safari".

Next, scroll down to the General options and tap "AutoFill".

In iOS, the options are slightly different than on macOS. You can still turn off your contact information, names and passwords, and credit cards, but there is no option for other forms.

The My Info option will let you choose another contact to use as your device's main contact, or again, you can edit your own contact information so it is up to date.

You can also view, add, remove, and edit any saved credit cards.

You may have noticed, in the previous screenshot, that there isn't any obvious way to edit saved login information. To fix any stored usernames and passwords, tap back to the Safari settings, and then tap "Passwords" right above the AutoFill settings.

Keep in mind that AutoFill will automatically populate any forms on your devices, regardless of who is using them. Thus, you should only lend your devices to people you trust, or simply turn off AutoFill if someone else is going to be using your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

One final note: user login details and credit cards are stored in your iCloud Keychain ( unless they're not set up to sync to iCloud ), so when you add, delete, or edit either of these items on any one device connected to your iCloud account, the information will be populated to your other devices.

That's really all there is to it. Safari's AutoFill settings are simple enough to understand. Now, if you no longer want certain information to automatically populate forms, you can turn it off. Similarly, if the information is incorrect, you can fix it.

When you have multiple entries in your contact card, however, AutoFill will only grab the first of each of these entries.

Fortunately, there is a way to fix this issue, even if it's a bit of a roundabout solution. Open your contact card in the Contacts app, and click the "Edit" button at the bottom of the card. (Or, from Safari, open the preferences, go to the AutoFill tab, and click Edit; you'll automatically be redirected to the Contacts app.) Ensure that the address, phone number, or email address that you want to be entered by Safari AutoFill is in the first position for each of the data types. This will likely require moving around a bit of data, since fields cannot be dragged and rearranged in Contacts. Once you do this, however, your Autofill data should come in exactly like you want.

Unfortunately, Safari has an issue. Despite the fact that the card details have been input into the Autofill, when I get to the actual payment, it won’t fill anything (it’s as if there is no data within the Autofill). As such, I am forced to use Chrome Browser to do this. Pity.

How to AutoFill Verification Codes in Safari from Email and Messages?

Many websites like Microsoft, Apple and Google offer two factor authentication to protect your login details from unauthorized access. This is done generally by linking your account with authenticator apps like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator. However, it is also common to send a verification code in an email or SMS. You need to enter this verification code to login after entering the first level username/password details. This is a hassle to look and type the code every time when you login. Fortunately, Safari browser makes it easier to automatically suggest the verification code form your email or message in the login form. Here is how you can use this feature on your iPhone and Mac.

Requirements for AutoFilling Verification Codes

This feature is available as part of Safari version 17 or later. Therefore, you should update your iPhone to iOS 17 or later and Mac to macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Email verification code work with all email service providers like Gmail, Yahoo!, Outlook, etc. However, you must have added and configured your email in iPhone/Mac Mail app for this to work.

Enable AutoFilling Verification Code in iPhone

Open Settings app and go to “Passwords” section.

Unlock the screen with Face ID or passcode.
Tap on “Password Options” settings.

On the next screen, make sure “AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys” option is enabled.
Select “iCloud Passwords & Keychain” option for “ Use Passwords and Passkeys from” setting.

Checking AutoFill Verification Code in Safari

Open any website’s login page that triggers a security or verification code to your email or phone number. Enter your username/password details and trigger a verification code.

Tap on the input text box where you can enter the verification code. Safari will automatically show a suggestion with the code received from your email as shown below. Simply tap on the code to insert in the box and login to the website.

Automatically Delete Verification Emails

This kind of emails with verification codes simply occupy the storage space in your inbox without any use after login. Similarly, verification messages also simply got accumulated in your Messages app over period. Safari will automatically suggest deleting the verification email/message when you use the code. Tap on “Delete After Use” option to enable this feature.

If you have selected “Setup Later in Settings” option, follow the below steps to enable the feature:

Unlock the screen and tap on “Password Options” item.
Scroll down to bottom on the next screen and enable “Clean Up Automatically” option under “Verification Codes” section.

AutoFilling of verification codes work exactly same manner in Mac.

Click the Apple logo showing on top left corner of the screen and select “System Settings…” menu.

Go to “Passwords” section and unlock the settings page with your Touch ID or password.

On the next page, enable “ AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys” and select “iCloud Keychain” for “Use passwords and passkeys from” option.
After that, enable “Clean Up Automatically” option under “Verification Codes” section.

From now onwards, Safari will show verification codes received in Mail or Messages app whenever you are trying to login to websites. The messages and mails also will be automatically deleted after you used the verification code.

Saving and filling passwords

Use universal autofill in apps and browsers on your mac.

Universal Autofill requires 1Password 8 for Mac . If you’re using 1Password 7 or earlier, learn how to upgrade .

With 1Password and Universal Autofill, you can fill your usernames and passwords everywhere you need to sign in on your Mac:

in all your apps and websites
anywhere you’re asked to log in as an administrator on your Mac
when you run sudo commands in your terminal app

To get started, set up Universal Autofill on your Mac.

Set up Universal Autofill

Before you can use 1Password for Mac to autofill your information in apps and browsers, you’ll need to set up 1Password on your Mac . Then follow these steps:

Choose Apple menu > System Settings .
Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar, then click Accessibility in the list.

If you don't see 1Password, click the + button, enter the password you use to log in to your Mac, and locate the 1Password app in your Applications folder, then select it and click Open .

From now on, you’ll be able to use 1Password for Mac to fill your usernames and passwords without opening the 1Password app.

Fill in apps and browsers

Use the Command-Backslash (\) keyboard shortcut to autofill your usernames and passwords in your favorite apps and websites.

If you only have one login saved for an app or website, 1Password will fill it automatically.

If you have more than one login saved for an app or a website, Quick Access will open so you can choose the one you want to fill.

Get help if you’re having trouble filling in apps and browsers.

Autofill your Mac login

You can also use 1Password to fill your Mac login any time you’re asked to log in with an administrator account on your Mac, like when you want to change a system preference or use sudo commands in Terminal or iTerm2.

Create a Mac login item, if you don’t already have one saved in 1Password:

Open and unlock 1Password.
Click New Item , search for “Mac login”, and select it.
Your Mac username will be filled automatically. Enter your password and click Save .

If you’re using Terminal or iTerm 2, enter a sudo command and use the Command-Backslash (\) keyboard shortcut to autofill your Mac login.

The first time fill your password, you’ll see a message that 1Password wants to control your terminal app. Click OK to turn on the Automation preference for 1Password.

Get help if you don’t see a message to allow 1Password to fill logins in your terminal.

If you can’t use the Command-Backslash (\) keyboard shortcut to fill in an app or browser, use Quick Access (Shift-Command-Space) to find and fill your logins. If you’re still having trouble, you can copy your passwords from 1Password for Mac and paste them where you need to use them.

If you see a message that asks if you want to link your 1Password item to an app, or that 1Password can’t verify a site should have access to your item, you can choose what you want 1Password to do:

Allow Once: 1Password will fill your details in the app or website one time.
Always Allow: 1Password will fill your login in the app or website and update your 1Password item to link it to the app or site. You can then autofill your details every time you log in to the same app or website.
Cancel: 1Password won’t fill your login in the app or website and won’t update your 1Password login.

If you don’t see a message to allow 1Password to fill logins in your terminal app, follow these steps to turn on the Automation setting:

Click Privacy & Security in the sidebar, then click Automation in the list.
Click beside 1Password, then select the checkbox for Terminal or iTerm .

To manage whether 1Password submits forms automatically after filling them, choose 1Password > Settings , then click General , scroll down, and deselect Submit automatically with Universal Autofill .

Safari, the default browser of your Mac is packed with many powerful features that enhance the browsing experience of its users. One such feature is Autofill in Safari that can remember all the information like username, passwords, credit card and other form details, and then automatically populates it in the field whenever an online form is detected by the browser, making filling of online forms a cake walk.

Now for all those users who use Safari as their preferred browser on Mac, Autofill feature can enormously cut down the time that it really takes in filling an online form.

What Type of Information can be AutoFilled in Safari

Yes, this is also important to learn what type of information can be auto filled in Safari browser. As per Support dock from Apple there are four types of information that are as below:

Using information From my contacts: Complete forms with the information from any of the contact cards in Contacts App.
Username & Passwords: Securely save the usernames along with passwords that a user enters on web pages, and then populates them again when you revisit those same web pages in the future.
Credit Cards: Securely saves all your credit card info like credit card number, name on the card, and expiration date, and later uses all the information when you use that card again in future. You can also easily remove the existing cards, add new ones, and edit your card information if required. Note: Due to security reasons, your CVV (usually a 3 digit number on the back of your Card. 4 digit number for Amex) is never saved.
Other forms: Safely saves other information, like pin code, street name, and phone number that you enter on web pages, and later automatically fill it in when you visit the same web pages again.

If you are using the latest Mac with Touch ID , then you can use the same to automatically fill in the usernames, passwords, and credit card information that it gets from the Safari preferences AutoFill tab.

How to Use AutoFill in Safari

Before we start learning how to use AutoFill in Safari, please note that the information that you wish to be auto filled can be sensitive, like credit card information or username and passwords. Therefore Apple has provided you with a complete control to easily manage AutoFill information in Safari. As a user you can easily disable specific or complete information used by AutoFill in Safari.

To use AutoFill in Safari follow the steps given below:

1. Click on Safari icon to open the browser.

2. Now from the top toolbar, click on Safari at the top left corner. Now from the menu populates select Preferences.

3. In the new window click on the AutoFill tab. This will display various AutoFill categories.

4. Now mark a check next to the AutoFill options that you want to use while autofill the web forms on the internet. If you do not want any of the four categories to auto populate the information when an online form is detected then leave that category unchecked.

5. As discussed earlier you have complete access to either view or modify the information used by AutoFill in any of the categories. To view or edit just select the Edit button just right to the category name.

6. Please note that when you click on the Edit button you will be prompted to enter your Mac password. This is due to a security feature to restrict any unauthorized access other than you from making the changes to AutoFill information.

How to Clear AutoFill Form Data in Safari

If you have enabled AutoFill in Safari in the past, but now you do not want to continue with it, then you can easily disable it. To do so follow the above steps till point 3 and then uncheck all the AutoFill web forms options. And now if you wish to clear AutoFill Form Data as well then follow the steps below:

1. Open Safari and click on Safari tab on the top left corner of the menu bar. Now from the drop-down list select Preferences.

2. On the next screen, click on the AutoFill tab. Now click on the Edit option next to the AutoFill option for which you want to clear the data.

3. Now on the box that appears select all the Entries and click on Remove All > Done to save the settings.

You can repeat this process for other Autofill options, and clear the data stored in them.

How to Add, Edit or Remove AutoFill Credit Card Information in Safari

Safari’s AutoFill is a great feature that will fill in certain information for you so that you don’t have to type it over and over again. You can let Safari fill out forms automatically with your saved payment info. This will enable you to quickly navigate and complete online payment forms. For example, if you are using WesternUnion to send money, you can enter your credit card details automatically, meaning Safari will enter the card number, expiration date and security code. Unless you know your credit card number by heart, entering your card details into an online form can be a tedious process if you do this manually. This feature offers not only practicality but also saves time.

You may want to add or modify your credit card details for a variety of reasons. For example, if you have a new Apple Card, you will want to save it to Safari. If there are cards you no longer use, you may want to remove them. Or, if you change your Apple Card number , you would want to update it because the old number would be outdated.

You can add, edit, or delete saved payment information and credit card details in the AutoFill settings. Here is how.

Add, edit or delete AutoFill credit card info in Safari on Mac

Open Safari on your Mac.
From the top menu, click on Safari , then Settings (or Preferences if you are running macOS Monterey or earlier). Or press Command – Comma ( , ) together.

Select the AutoFill tab.
Click the Edit button next to “Credit cards.”

The next screen will say, “Credit Cards Are Locked.” Enter your password to unlock it so that you can open the card screen.
Click the add (+) button to add a new card. Add the details and click Done .
Click the minus (-) button to remove an existing card. Select a card and click this remove button.
Select a card, and then you can edit the details such as name, card number, expiration date and security code.

Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
Tap on Safari .

Tap AutoFill under the General section .

Tap Saved Credit Cards .

Scroll down and tap Add Credit Card to save a new card. You can click on Use Camera to scan your card and enter the details quickly. You can also use the keyboard to enter it manually.
Swipe left, and tap Delete to remove a card. You can also tap Edit and select credit cards to remove and tap Delete . This way, you can delete multiple cards at once.
Tap a card to open its details. Then tap Edit to make changes if needed.

Click Settings
In the left-hand panel, select Autofill
A list of items that use Autofill will appear (i.e. Password Manager, Payment Methods, etc.). Click on each one that you don’t want autofill used and toggle everything off

Please be aware that this will not remove all autofill suggestions, just the ones you remove individually.

Firefox Browsers

How to autofill passwords, email addresses and more on iPhone

AutoFill on iPhone is supposed to help you out when you’re entering a password or typing in your email. When it doesn’t work, it can be incredibly frustrating — especially if you don’t know some complicated password offhand. The phone’s supposed to remember it so you don’t have to!

Now, in iOS 17, AutoFill has been put on steroids. The new AutoFill is much more expansive than the old, and unlike previous versions, works anywhere you can input text, including third-party browsers. To autofill passwords, credit cards, contacts and more, you no longer have to dig through Settings > Passwords or through the Contacts app to pull out the information.

You can even autofill scanned text from documents, signs and more using the camera. Here’s how it’s done.

How to autofill passwords on iPhone

In Safari, tap on a text box. There should be an option to autofill a saved password in a toolbar above the keyboard. You can tap on a username (and authenticate with Face ID) to fill it in, or you can tap the Passwords key icon to pick a different one.

If no such menu or option shows up, you may be frustrated, but there’s another option. Tap on the text field again and you should see a pop-up menu. Tap AutoFill > Passwords and authenticate with Face ID to bring up saved passwords. Scroll through the list or search.

If you want to look through and edit or clean up your saved passwords, you can always find them inside Settings > Passwords .

If you want easier access, you can make it its own standalone icon your Home Screen . Download this Shortcut , tap the ⋯ button to edit it, hit the Share button and tap Add to Home Screen .

How to autofill email addresses and phone numbers on iPhone

You can just as easily autofill your phone number, email address, home or work address and more (or that of another contact).

Tap on a text field and tap again to bring up the pop-up menu. Hit AutoFill > Contact . Pick a contact and tap on a field to autofill.

This works anywhere you can enter text, not just in email and phone number fields in Safari.

Need to send someone a friend’s phone number? You don’t need to switch from Messages to Contacts, dig through, copy it and paste it back. Directly inside Messages, tap to bring up the pop-up menu and tap AutoFill > Contact .

Need to send someone the Netflix password? Tap AutoFill > Passwords . It can save you a lot of hassle.

There’s one more trick up the AutoFill menu’s sleeve. Say you need to Google a really long serial number, or you need to type in your car’s VIN on an insurance website.

Any time you need to type something exact that isn’t easily human-readable, tap the text box and hit AutoFill > Scan Text . The keyboard will be replaced with a small camera — just point it at the text you want to scan, hold it steady and tap Insert .

You can also tap the Live Text button in the bottom-right. In this mode, you can drag your finger along the scanned text to choose precisely what to enter in.

Tap on the text field to bring the keyboard back up to make precise edits.

WWDC 2024: Here Are the 3 Best AI Tools Apple Might Reveal

I n less than a week, Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off. And the company that brought you those animated Memoji you never use on the iPhone and made Personas so you can video chat as a character straight out of Polar Express while wearing a Vision Pro , has a plan to win the generative AI race : weird emoji.

While companies like ChatGPT , Google and Microsoft have a head start using artificial intelligence trained on large language models to generate text and conversations that sound more human, remove items and people from photos, and develop tools to make weather forecasts more accurate , Apple is, according to a Bloomberg report , going to offer the ability to put AI-generated emoji in your chats.

And people will love it -- because this is Apple.

Of course there is much more to Apple's future AI plans than just the ability to make any emoji you can imagine (or rather not imagine) a reality.

At WWDC , the iPhone-maker is expected to show off new versions of its operating systems like iOS 18 and debut generative AI tools. When I first heard about Apple's reported AI features , I was fascinated, and not just by the food-animal hybrid emoji possibilities. I was genuinely filled with hope that Apple could actually set itself apart from all the other AI criticism and controversy currently happening in tech.

But let's back up a bit to set the scene.

Back in February, during a first-quarter earnings call , Apple CEO Tim Cook told shareholders that the company is putting "a tremendous amount of time and effort" into integrating AI into its products. Then in May, on a second-quarter earnings call , he said that Apple was making a significant investment into generative AI.

While we expect to hear a lot about AI at WWDC , Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman got the tech circles buzzing with his report on what AI features could be coming to iOS 18 and MacOS 15.

We could see AI help edit photos, send messages or reply to email. AI could summarize long messages and transcribe voice messages. Search could be smarter, and Siri could speak more conversationally. AI tools might even summarize something you come across browsing on Safari. A lot of these features wouldn't be that surprising because they already exist on the latest Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixels .

But there are three possible Apple AI tools in Gurman's report that stood out to me.

On-the-fly AI emoji, please and thank you

While there already exist tools and sites that can mash up emoji icons into ridiculous symbols, like Emoji Kitchen (I've talked about the topic before on CNET's One More Thing show), Apple might launch its own version of this tool in iOS 18 .

Bloomberg says that the iPhone might be able to create an emoji for you on the fly, something outside the standard emoji library set by the unicode consortium. Apple knows how to have some fun with messaging, and it's right out of the company's playbook to give folks something silly to talk about in a software update.

When Apple does a weird cartoony thing, that's the feature that gets all the attention. When the Vision Pro came out , we all gawked at the Personas . The iPhone X's true depth front-facing camera was fun to show off because of the animated Memoji faces in chat. And when Apple announced the iPhone 11, it was the ability to record slow-motion videos with the front-facing camera that made the phone more exciting (I'm glad the term "slofie" didn't catch on -- nice try, 2019 Apple).

But I am being serious when I say that Apple is really smart to give people a lighthearted playground for AI image generation. We are in a time filled with stories of how AI systems are ethically questionable and making terrible goofs .

Recently, Google set its Gemini AI free on search, and folks poked fun at the weird results it gave. Gemini pulled jokes from Reddit and The Onion, then spewed out answers as hard facts, telling people that eating rocks is good for you and recommending people put glue on pizza .

That same week, movie star Scarlett Johansson publicly criticized OpenAI and got her lawyers involved over its lack of transparency. ChatGPT's flirtatious chatbot voice sounded eerily like her, despite Johansson denying the company permission to use her voice. The voice has since been removed.

With emoji creation, Apple's implementation could get customers interested in using AI while avoiding any controversy. This is assuming that people don't make something terrible with the emojis. Let's not go crazy with the eggplants, people.

Siri reboot: Now with more AI

One thing I'm watching out for at WWDC is if Apple's personal assistant, Siri, gets an upgrade to better understand our commands. The Bloomberg report mentioned that a more advanced Siri would be coming to not just the iPhone, but also the Apple Watch for on-the-go tasks.

A revamped Siri that works well on the watch is exactly how Apple can stand apart from Google, Microsoft and OpenAI. If Apple has a useful AI helper on a wearable, it would do what other companies have been trying and failing to do so far: Make an AI companion that can go anywhere without needing the phone.

A month ago we saw the launch of the Humane AI Pin , a $700 AI computer you wear on a shirt. But early reviews blasted the wearable for being buggy and not fulfilling its promises. Humane, the startup behind the AI Pin, is now reportedly trying to sell itself for as much as $1 billion.

Last month was also the launch of another tiny AI-powered handheld gadget called the Rabbit R1 . It also tried to be an AI assistant that you could take anywhere and answer questions, but it didn't answer much and left tech reviewers disappointed .

If Apple brings a more AI-savvy Siri to the Apple Watch, then it will show all these other companies how a real AI voice assistant can actually be helpful on the go, instead of just being hyped as helpful.

But that feels like a big "if."

Other companies are already dabbling with putting more AI on watches as a health or workout assistant. The Amazfit Cheetah has an AI running coach of sorts. Google's FitBit Labs is launching a new program that uses generative AI to answer questions and provide more context about your activity data. The idea is that the AI could be used to help you set realistic fitness goals.

A year ago, Bloomberg reported that Apple was working on some sort of AI-powered health coaching service. But who knows how close we are to seeing that launch. Apple also took some baby steps by putting more powerful chips in the latest watch models. That means Siri requests are processed on the device faster and more securely, instead of having the data be processed in the cloud. The Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 let you ask Siri about your health data or log information about your health. And it's all done locally on the device.

Surprise twist: More privacy

Another area where Apple could stand apart from everyone else is privacy. It's like that old ad, what happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone .

Bloomberg reports that much of the processing for Apple's AI in the next version of iOS and MacOS would run entirely on the device.

But there's a twist that worries me.

It's also being reported that if an AI feature requires more horsepower, the work will be pushed for processing in the cloud, to data centers powered by Apple's M2 Ultra chips.

So Apple will really need to explain how our data is being protected and give examples of what tasks might need to be calculated in the cloud. What is being sacrificed here? The Information reports that Apple might protect cloud data by using some sort of virtual black box.

If Apple's AI system can summarize our private notifications, our text messages, the sites we visit and the media we consume, Apple needs to be clear about how it's handling our privacy.

There are already many questions on what data these AI companies are slurping up to train their systems, and what we are giving away to feed these beasts. So Apple needs to be prepared to talk about privacy, which might be harder to do because of these last two rumored announcements.

The same reports say Apple will announce it partnered with OpenAI somehow. I don't know how Apple is going to walk this line of promoting a safe, private environment, but also boasting that it invited a troublemaker into the backyard to play in our sandbox. Even if you trust Apple, are you ready to trust Apple's friends?

Apple's AI already caused drama before it's announced

Another concern comes from a rumored feature on the Safari browser called Web Eraser. As reported by Apple Insider , the tool lets you take out any element of a website, like an ad. And Business Insider reports that a group of French publishers and advertisers are asking Tim Cook to halt deploying this tool because of how it could hurt publishers that rely on advertising for their business. It's not even out yet and there's already a signed letter against it, so we'll have to see what that's all about.

So how does Apple dance around this drama? Easy. Tell everyone it's just in beta. That's what Bloomberg is reporting . Apple will likely label AI features as beta or that they're still being tested.

Oh sure, every single iPhone customer will try it. But hey, you can't get mad at Apple if it hangs out an "under construction" sign and its AI becomes wonky and falls apart on you, misses a fact in the summary, skipped a word in a transcription, or causes your website to fail because you can't make money anymore.

It's like being confidently unconfident.

But even with a beta label, there's one slipup that people won't forgive: a privacy slipup.

What is icloud.

Find saved passwords and passkeys on your iPhone

View saved passwords and passkeys in Settings

Tap Settings, then scroll down and tap Passwords.

Use Face ID or Touch ID when prompted, or enter your passcode.

To view a password or passkey, select a website or app.

If you can't find a saved password or passkey

Make sure that you're viewing all of your passwords and passkeys. The Settings screen should say Passwords at the top, rather than a shared password group name or My Passwords.

Check your Recently Deleted: In Settings, scroll down and tap Passwords. Then tap Recently Deleted.

If you have multiple Apple devices, make sure that iCloud Keychain is turned on.

When you move a password or passkey to a shared password group, that password or passkey is visible only on devices with compatible software. If you can't find a saved password or passkey that you moved to a shared group on another device, make sure that your iPhone has iOS 17 or later.
