Visitors offer positive reviews about the insightful guides and appreciate the crowd-free experience. Others remark that too much time is spent at the second stop, which is a gift shop. The tour includes round-trip transportation from your hotel, an art historian guide and entrance fees. Lunch is at your own expense. Tickets cost approximately $45 per participant. Mexico City

What people love about mexico city tours.

This tour was excellent! My family and I really enjoyed it very much. We only wished we had a bit more time to spend at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalup.
A great tour is for those who love hiking and are in Mexico City, the difficulty of hikes increases with each one you take finishing with La Malinche, a full-day hike where you will reach the summit (we also opted to climb to Nevado de toluca, for iztaccihuatl you would need a 2-day hike as it's more technical so we went till gate 4 only). make sure to acclimatize to the altitude a couple of days in Mexico City before. The organization and communication from the company was great and our guide Jorge was also very professional, accommodatingand and with nice sense of humor.
Fue una experiencia unica. Desde el inicio el tour a las piramides y la Basilica de la Virgen de Guadalpue.

15 Best Mexico City Tours

Mexico City is one of the most populous cities in the world and, in many ways, it’s Mexico’s cultural heart.

The city is conveniently located near many of the country’s most popular and historic archaeological sites, which makes day-trips a great way to see the surrounding countryside and learn about its history without venturing too far from your home-base.

The city is known for its cuisine, architecture, sports, and the many colorful and creative artists who call it home.

Though the city is relatively safe, due to its sprawling nature, it’s best experienced with a local guide.

Below are 15 of the best Mexico tours.

1. Full-Day Tour to Casa Azul, Xochimilco, and Coyoacán

Xochimilco

The vibrant waterways of Xochimilco are great places to relax and explore via beautiful traditional boats called trajineras. If you add a cool drink and some amazing finger-food from the floating restaurants all around, the experience can be downright decadent.

The tour includes a stop in Coyoacán, a trendy neighborhood famous for the contemporary artists who live there and the wonderful art that’s found everywhere.

In addition, you’ll visit world-renowned artist Frida Kahlo’s Casa Azul – or blue house – and get some fascinating insights into the life of her and her famous husband Diego Rivera.

Last but not least, you’ll visit the campus of Central University, known for its murals and Olympic Stadium.

2. Teotihuacan, Shrine of Guadalupe & Tlatelolco Day Tour

Teotihuacan

If visiting three of the most historically important sites in one tour from Mexico City sounds like a great way to spend a day, consider this tour to Teotihuacan, the Shrine of Guadalupe and Tlatelolco.

Teotihuacan is one of the country’s most iconic sites and includes the Moon and Sun pyramids and the ancient temple of the god Quetzalcoatl.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is also an icon, especially with the country’s Catholic believers, who revere this shrine built to honor the Virgin Mary.

The tour takes a full day; meals and drinks aren’t included so bring a few pesos.

View Prices & Reviews

3. Puebla and Cholula Day-Tour with Lunch from Mexico City

Puebla, Mexico

Mexico has a rich and diverse history which dates back to the native Aztecs and the Spanish missionaries who sought to convert them to Christianity.

On this 10-hour tour, you’ll get a well-rounded view of the country’s culture and history, which even includes Arabic influences.

The tour also includes stops at the Cholula Archaeological Area, home to one of the largest pyramids in the Americas.

Another of the tour’s highlights is the Talavera ceramic plant, which boasts the distinctly Mexican pottery, tile, and ornaments that are popular the world over.

4. Lucha Libre Wrestling Show in Mexico City

Lucha Libre Wrestling Show Mexico City

Though professional wrestling is popular in America, its popularity in Mexico reaches epic proportions.

It’s full of dramatic, masked characters beating each other senseless as thousands of rowdy spectators cheer them on.

This tour begins with pickup at a pre-determined meeting point. From there, you’ll be driven to the area, which may feel smaller and more intimate than you’re expecting.

A shot of tequila before the match is included, and cold cervezas are available, so bring a few extra dollars.

The tour lasts between two and three hours and will show you a side of Mexico that few get to see.

5. Full-Day Volcano Hiking Tour

Izta-Popo National Park

Izta-Popo National Park is a great place to visit as a day trip from Mexico City.

This full-day hiking tour includes pickup from meeting points in the city. From there, you’ll proceed to Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl, where you’ll start your hike from the base of the dormant volcano.

The majestic volcano peaks at more than 10,000 feet and was first explored by conquistadors in the 16th century.

Group size is limited and the guide will tailor it to the fitness level of the guests, so you can go at a speed that’s good for you.

6. Cuernavaca and Taxco from Mexico City

Cuernavaca

Known as the City of Eternal Springs, Cuernavaca is in the neighboring state of Morelos and is known for its moderate climate, scenic streets, and flowered gardens.

It’s also home to one of the country’s great monasteries that dates back to the 1700s.

Contrasting Cuernavaca, Taxco is surrounded by scenic mountains loaded with silver and dotted with artisanal mines from eras past.

These two distinct cities will be a pleasant change from the urban hustle and bustle of Mexico City. They are full of their own history and beauty, and, since they’re not too far away, they can be visited in a day.

7. Chapultepec Castle and Anthropology Museum Tour

Chapultepec Castle

It’s not too well known that in ages past, the rulers of Mexico shared direct lineage with some of Europe’s royal families.

This tour that begins in Mexico City will take you to the stunning Chapultepec Castle, which was the home of the Mexican Emperor and is conveniently located near a revered Aztec ruin.

In addition, the Anthropology Museum is one of the most amazing stores of Central and South American history that you’ll find anywhere; much of the displays include artifacts dating back to the eras of the Incas, Toltecs, and Aztecs.

Everything is included except food, drinks, souvenirs, and gratuities.

8. Half-Day Markets and Street Food Tour

Markets And Street Food Tour

Visiting local markets is one of the best ways to get familiarized with the locals, their food, culture, and what makes them tick.

Because of the tens of millions of people that call Mexico City home, it’s full of local markets tucked into nearly every corner. For visitors, they can be amazingly fun and exotic places to visit.

On this half-day market tour, you’ll get some historical insight into some of the city’s famous and long-dead residents, like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

For most of the tour, you’ll travel via public transportation, and will get to sample some street food and pick up some souvenirs as well.

9. Private 3-Hour Walking Tour of Downtown Mexico City

Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral

Mexico City is a sprawling, diverse city; for visitors not familiar with its layout, it can be a bit on the overwhelming side too.

If you’d like a private tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, there’s no better way to do it than with a local guide.

The tour includes stops at many of the downtown area’s most historic and culturally important sites, like the Zona Rosa and Condesa Districts.

There will be time to browse a few shops and markets, and maybe even stop for a quick bite to eat as well, though food and drink aren’t included in the cost.

10. Half-Day Tour of Azteca Stadium

Azteca Stadium

Like much of Europe and South America, Mexico is gaga over football – or soccer, as we call it in the States.

This half-day tour includes an insider’s look into Azteca Stadium, an iconic symbol of the country’s football mania.

The stadium is located in Santa Ursula, an easily reached suburb of Mexico City.

You’ll marvel at the stadium, which can hold more than 100,000 people. You’ll probably find its history and cultural significance interesting too – it has hosted some football legends like Pele.

This tour is a big hit, so plan ahead and book in advance if you can.

11. Mexico City’s Historic Centre Food Tasting Walking Tour

Mexico City's Historic Centre Food Tasting Walking Tour

If you’re determined to experience the tastes of Mexico but don’t have a lot of time to devote to the endeavor, then this four-hour historic food tour is a must.

Mexico is one of the world’s great cuisines, and though there are no shortages of Mexican restaurants the world over, it’s really best experienced on the local level with an experienced guide.

This tour includes trips to cantinas, markets, and delightful little holes-in-the-wall that serve up some of the best grub you’ll find anywhere.

In addition to food and drink, you’ll also pass by lots of historic areas; your guide will tell you more about Mexican history and culture than you ever thought you’d know.

12. Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary Tour

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary, Mexico

The magnificent Monarch butterflies make a southward migration every year that covers thousands of miles.

This nature-lovers tour will take you to one of the species’ winter sanctuaries, where you’ll get to stroll through the forest and appreciate the natural soundings and butterflies.

If you’re lucky enough to go when the butterflies are particularly plentiful, their density will make the forest practically come alive; the masses often resemble waterfalls and gently swaying bridal veils.

This tour lasts 15 hours, is all-inclusive, and includes stops at other regional hotspots like Lake Valle de Bravo, one of the area’s most popular recreation areas.

13. Hot-Air Balloon Flight over the Teotihuacan Pyramids

Pyramid of the Sun. Teotihuacan

Mexico’s amazing ancient archaeological sites are incredible no matter how you see them, but viewing the Teotihuacan Pyramids by hot-air balloon is something extra special.

After a brief safety meeting, your guide will start the balloon’s ascent and you’ll drift over the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, which are some of the most well-preserved and studied pre-Columbian sites anywhere in the Americas.

Everything is included, even transportation to and from your Mexico City hotel, so don’t let this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pass you by.

If you’ve got a fear of heights or are claustrophobic, this isn’t for you.

14. 4-Hour Private Evening Taco Tour

Taco Night Private Food Tour

Mexico has more different kinds of tacos than seems humanly possible. If you’re an avid taco lover, there’s no better way to get your fix than this four-hour taco tour.

Your street savvy guide will take you to some amazing taco stands, some of which aren’t much bigger than a closet. You’ll get the opportunity to try some local drinks like mescal too.

Transportation to and from your hotel is included. You’ll visit a few of the city’s distinct neighborhood taquerias and cantinas, and though you may not be able to converse with the locals, you’ll definitely feel like one of them while you’re wolfing down your grub.

15. Day of the Dead Celebration and Tour

Mixquic Day Of The Dead Celebrations

The town of San Andres is the place where many of Mexico City’s residents go to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

The town is about an hour from Mexico City and swells to massive proportions as visitors flock here on the national holiday in which people pay homage to their dead friends and relatives.

This festival has been going on for ages; it includes beautiful decorations of candles, flowers, and the famous artwork that includes colorful pictures of skulls and skeletons.

It’s one of those culturally unique things to do on your trip to Mexico that shouldn’t be passed up.

Organized Tours in Mexico City

Mexico City is a great place to explore on your own, and in general this is the easiest and least expensive way to see what you like. But if your time is limited, you may want to acclimate quickly by taking a tour or two.

The many commercial tours include a 4-hour city tour of such sites as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace, and Chapultepec Park and Castle; a longer tour to the Shrine of Guadalupe and nearby pyramids at Teotihuacán; and the Sunday tour that begins with the Ballet Folklórico, moves on to the Floating Gardens of Xochimilco, and may or may not include lunch and the afternoon bullfights. Almost as popular are 1-day and overnight tours to Puebla, Cuernavaca, Taxco, and Acapulco. There are also several nightclub tours. Book through your hotel concierge or tour desk.

If you want to let your stomach be your guide, consider taking a gastronomic tour. Eat Mexico (www.EatMexico.com) is a new tour company founded by American expat food writer Lesley Tellez and her Chilango counterpart, Jesica López Sol. Eat Mexico's guides are the perfect stewards to Mexico City's unique local cuisine. If you're squeamish about eating tacos al pastor on a street corner, they'll teach you how to spot the best vendors and even how to administer a squeeze of lime. Other tours include a jaunt around authentic markets in El Centro and a taste of Mexican wine, tequila, and mescal.

What other guests say about our tours and locals

Perfect taco tour in Mexico City

"Mariel was an excellent tour guide and took me through the local side streets to experience the true tacos of CDMX. I've been to Mexico City but experiencing this with a local truly elevated the tour. Do yourself a favour and make sure tou book an experience with Mariel, you won't regret it! Please note that the price to value ratio on this tour is not very good...could you go to these 5 places to get tacos and pay approximately 10-15% of the tour price, yes....would you be missing out on a walking tour with an incredible person and helping the local economy, certainly. If you want to eat your monies worth in tacos this isn't the tour for you. "

local Mariel

Fantastic day in the city center

"My husband and I really enjoyed our walking tour with Daniel. We saw places we would’ve never known about that were absolutely worth seeing. Daniel was incredibly knowledgeable about CDMX and its history. Highly recommend! "

local Daniel

Pyramid tour - Teotihuacan

"We are a family of four that had a wonderful tour from Rogelio. He was incredibly invested in showing us the details and sharing stories and perspectives of the Teotihuacan site. The intimate experience really heightened our awareness and knowledge of these sacred grounds. Truly a gem of an experience and can’t recommend Rogelio enough. He presented in a way that was friendly to both adults and kids. He was a valuable resource to answer our questions and the transportation to and from was a plus! He also gave us wonderful recommendations to local spots in the city. Thank you Rogelio!"

local Rogelio

Amazing tour!

"Mariel was so great! For starters, we really underestimated the traffic in Mexico City so we were a little late for our tour. Mariel was so gracious and still showed us a great time. She was so knowledgeable about the history of Mexico City, especially with regard to the indigenous people. We also stopped at a taco place that was amazing - best taco we had in Mexico City. 10/10 would recommend, especially for first timers or history buffs!"

guest Cina

Superb tour of lovely neighbourhood

"Mariel gave us a fantastic tour of Coyoacán. It’s a really lovely neighbourhood which contrasts with the busyness of downtown Mexico City. Mariel was really knowledgeable, entertaining and kept our interest up for the whole tour. Thank you ☺️ "

guest Andrew

Wonderul Tour! Highly recommended

"Luz was wonderful, she gave a us a great tour around the centre of Mexico City. She was knowledgeable about the city and its history, as well as the food we ate. Exactly as the tour described we tasted food from 10 different places. It gave a us exactly what we wanted."

local Luz

Mariel was fantastic!

"I had a wonderful and meaningful time with Mariel. What was a delicious taco tour also turned into an extremely interesting walk/talk about Mexico City’s history, people, art and culture. We tried the best tacos as we walked, were greater by very friendly and warm people. Mariel is funny, smart, kind and genuine. I highly recommend her for any of her tours as if I had more time I would book another with her focusing more on the art, historical sites and people."

guest Elliot

"Mabel was amazing. The tour was a great mix of the buildings and the stories behind it. She also made sure we spent time in shady spots to hear the history. It was a great experience; highly recommend!"

local Mabel

Mariel was lovely!

"Mariel customized our tour of Coyoacan to include a tour of the Frida Kahlo museum, and as it was a very hot day, she brought a mini electric fan to help us get through the heat! She was very kind and accommodating, answering all our questions and providing a great overview of the area. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mariel for any of the tours she offers. We will definitely book her again when we are back in the city! "

guest Rebecca

Excellent Tour

"Rogelio provided an excellent introduction tour to CDMX in a very comfortable transport. He was full of interesting information about the country and the places we visited. Highly recommend!"

guest Matt

Adriana friendly was highly knowledgeable and adapted to our specific interests and needs. I’m glad we signed up for this!

Ingrid is relatable and was very flexible to our plans, including adjustments during the tour. We got a good tourism experience with Chapultepec Castle, and also a real local experience with lunch in the downtown market area.

We had a great day exploring Mexico City with Oskar. I love that he was flexible with us on the different highlights we were interested in seeing. This was definitely not a 'standardized' tour. He emailed me prior to the date requesting preferences, and then even on the morning of our tour we were able to request changes. I have nothing but good things to say about this experience and if you are considering- highly recommend. Thanks for a great day Oskar!

Nick was an AMAZING tour guide! He is super knowledgeable and friendly! We had an amazing time! He tailored the tour based on our interest and drove us around beyond our planned tour time afterwards

Testimonials

Rosa y Guillem, Mallorca.

If you are looking for a unique experience in Mexico City you just found it!

We were strolling around the city in a vintage Beetle car, discovering local hidden gems, tasting THE BEST tacos in town and much more.

Maricela and Hugo are super professional, flexible and open-minded. It almost didnt feel like its the peak of the pandemic.

Seeing Mexico City with your eyes and sensibility was a pure pleasure.

Gracias por todo!

What our customers say

Vibe's guide was knowledgable, flexible, tireless & polite -- a gracious host proud of his country. Our family of 5 asked Vibe to customize a few things and we couldn't ask for more. The days in Mexico City were a blast. Cute hotel in w/ very helpful staff. Excellent pastries across the street in our cool "Roma" neighborhood (which we asked for). Impressive museums (Museo de Archeologia was a huge & wonderful surprise), bikes thru parks, delicious street food, musicians performers throughout.

TripAdvisor (October 2019): “As non-Spanish speakers, our priority was convenience and safety. That is to say, Vibe Adventures really delivered on these points! Our trip was split into 2 sections, Mexico City area and around, as well as Merida/some areas on the Yucatan peninsula. Transport was great, as we had a private car driven by our guides throughout. Likewise, we also had a domestic flight booked for us by Vibe Adventures that went without issue ...”

The 9 Coolest Mexico City Hotels That Should Be on Your Radar This Year

Mexico City has cultivated a reputation as a foodie’s paradise, with three of its restaurants — Quintonil, Rosetta, and Pujol — earning spots on this year’s World’s 50 Best list. And while a trip purely dedicated to fine dining makes a flight to CDMX more than worth it, we’d argue that the city’s passion for art and design is equally as motivating. This is obvious in its hotels .

At a Glance: The Best Hotels in Mexico City

  • Octavia Casa
  • St. Regis Mexico City

Casa Pani

Círculo mexicano .

Mexico City hotels are frequented in equal measure by visitors and residents alike, with the city’s most impressive properties erring on the boutique side. There are contemporary bed and breakfasts inspired by clothing brands, like Octavia Casa , to restored historic buildings that were once the residences of prolific Mexican artists.

Where to Stay in Mexico City

To simplify your planning, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite design-forward hotels in Mexico City to book ahead of your trip based on our own travels and top reviews alike.

Casa Polanco

With its white stucco walls and arched doorway disguised by greenery and a wrought-iron fence, Casa Polanco could understandably be mistaken for a historic private residence. It’s thankfully a boutique property open to the public, and is a haven for art and design lovers. Contemporary Mexican works, curated by Santiago Toca, are scattered throughout 19 suites and commonplaces, including the library; mid-20th century objects and furniture are sourced from antique shows and bazaars or purchased directly from makers like Raúl de la Cerda, an industrial designer, or Alfonso Marina, a local cabinetmaker.

Octavia Casa

Octavia Casa is the bed and breakfast arm of Octavia, a Mexican clothing brand with capsule wardrobe checkmarks full of solid colors and simple silhouettes. That contemporary aesthetic is mirrored throughout their sister hotel. Restored from a dilapidated building in the trendy Condesa area, guests can expect soothing neutral tones for the perfect post-sightseeing reprieve. While there’s no on-site restaurants, fresh pastries are brought in every morning from local bakeries and natural Mexican wines can be enjoyed on the rooftop at night.

Brick Hotel

The dark wood and moody lighting of the stylish Brick Hotel makes it feel like an exclusive club you’d have to pay an exorbitant annual fee to get into. There are 17 rooms total (10 guest rooms, seven suites) and select rooms have private balconies that overlook the trendy Colonial Roma neighborhood. This is an ideal location for quick weekend trips as it puts you walking distance to  several must-sees like Panadería Rosetta, an iconic CDMX bakery known for their guava and ricotta danishes.

The Alest Hotel

The Alest Hotel is a nod to the city’s cultural diversity, and their British-inspired facade looks like it was transported from England and placed onto the tree-lined Eugenio Sue in CDMX’s Polanco neighborhood. The on-site 45 Restaurant offers contemporary Mexican dishes that should be followed by a cocktail at Limantour, the trendy ground floor bar.

The St. Regis Mexico City

When you close your eyes and dream up classic hotel luxury, it’s likely you’re envisioning the blueprint of St. Regis Mexico City . Guests can expect prompt service and modern amenities coupled with recently renovated Garden Terrace Suites, spacious rooms outfitted with oversized balconies — complete with patio seating, a fireplace, and hot tub — surrounded by an ever-growing skyline; one extra special suite is also the site of Mexico City’s only outdoor infinity pool. The on-site restaurants are lauded by guests and locals alike, and you’ll enjoy steak and sushi boats at Animal amidst suit-clad diners in lunchtime business meetings.

Downtown Mexico

For a boutique stay that doesn’t compromise budget, the Downtown averages $180 per night and houses 17 spacious rooms in a historic 17th-century manor. The old is balanced with the new; contemporary minimalist furniture against the backdrop of arched doorways and high ceilings capture the best of both worlds. The rooftop pool is home to some of the city’s best nightlife.

Círculo Mexicano is the former home of 20th-century photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo, and his iconic black and white images are tactically placed throughout the property. People watching is prime at Círculo Mexicano, courtesy of the ground floor marketplace and buzzy rooftop pool sweetened further by the courtyard Itacate del Mar restaurant — here, you’ll find unfussy street-style Mexican food.

Nima Local House Hotel

Anyone who’s romanticized a Juliet balcony will fall head over heels for Nima Local House Hotel , and the hanging greenery surrounding every nook and cranny only add to its Shakespearean feel. Located in the quaint Roma neighborhood, this hotel is intimate with only four bedrooms that tend to book up quickly. We recommend planning as far in advance as possible.

You may have noticed the artist-home-turned-hotel trend emerging on this list, and Casa Pani is no exception — it was built in the Sixites as the private residence of architect Mario Pani. There are six rooms total; four are in the main house and two are in the annex that’s accessible by a spiral metal staircase. Located in Cuauhtémoc, right in the middle of an emerging arts scene. Case in point: Exit La Librería .

A Tour of Red Bull’s New Mexico City Office

A Tour of Red Bull’s New Mexico City Office

Array

Beverage company Red Bull hired architecture firm WTF Arquitectos to design their new office in Mexico City, Mexico.

“When we studied the brand, we realized that Red Bull is synonymous with diversity, each of the athletes and artists who engage with the brand, identify with totally different values and feelings, however, there is a key word that unifies them: DESAFIO. The objective was very clear: To consolidate a large community through the design of each space, where each user feels part of Red Bull. The project is developed in a free plant that allows the user to have a broad vision of the whole and that at each step he takes, it leads him to discover a memorable event or activity. Each of the spaces is multifunctional, the reception is transformed into a DJ booth, connecting with the bar – dining room – bar that in turn distributes gently to the rest of the space. The concept is summarized in giving wings to people through ideas. The reception is inspired by a cenote, playing with two of its characteristic elements: water and sky, through two reflective pieces, the user will feel mimicked with the space and the brand, showing the logo and the user in his journey, finishing with the rear lattice, inspired by the negative of a climbing wall. The set of finishes resulted in a series of walls with flattened concrete, highlighting the ceilings that force the user to raise the view to appreciate them. In a remembrance of offering to the sky, we designed a curved ceiling in natural wood that resembles a Skate Park, which runs and is accentuated with lighting based on 360 LEDs to simulate characteristic elements of this urban space. The terracotta color is characteristic of some places in Mexico, in traditional villages in the form of a tile and in the city as a roof, for this reason, the slab, installations and luminaires, were manufactured specifically with this color so that they were harmoniously integrated into the space. Each boardroom has iconic elements, in particular one, we transformed the Red Bull can into an architectural element, hanging around a thousand cans that generate a unique ceiling for this project and solves the acoustics of the place. The floors were made of terrazzo-like rubber with accents on rugs to give it a more residential touch, moving away from the office concept to design a community concept. By forgetting the office concept and putting the word challenge, we opened the architectural program to a range of possibilities for the use of spaces, users transform and live differently each place and it is for this reason, in addition to having the formal part of the work, we also offered a fun and dynamic alternative to live the layout, the recreational areas are integrated to generate a new community, a RED BULL community.”
