Carnival Ships by Size [2023] with Comparison Chart

Carnival Ships by Size [2023] with Comparison Chart

Below you'll find a complete list of Carnival Ships by Size . From the cruise line's oldest ship (Carnival Sunshine) to their newest planned 2023 cruise ship, the Carnival Jubilee.

You'll find a massive difference between Carnival's smallet and the largest ship in their fleet. Scroll to the bottom of our sizing chart. You'll find that earlier ships were less than half the size of today's largest Carnival ships. To say, "my how you've grown" would be an understatement.

The drastic change in size can also be measured by "passenger count." Max capacity spans a range from 2,600 guests to over 6,600 passengers for Carnival's largest cruise ship, the Carnival Celebration.

First, we have to clear something up. We're measuring Carnival ships size by the metric, "Gross Tonnage." This always causes a bit of confusion amongst our community members. It's not simply "weight" that determines this size measurement. The definition is technical and boring, but we'll provide it anyway.

We told you it was boring! So why do we use this measurement to determine Carnival Ships Size? As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, it's prevalent. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . That makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, line and more. We've also used it to compare across cruise lines to bring you the list of the largest cruise ships in the world . Ok, we're done with today's maritime measurement course. Here's the good stuff.

The experience on these two ships will be completely different! On the Carnival Celebration, you'll be lucky to experience half of the venues on this largest, active Carnival cruise ship. Whereas the smaller ships offer a more quaint and personal experience.

In just a day or two, you'll have your bearings and likely a fixed routine on these ships. Which is better ? That's all going to depend on personal preferences! Some say "size matters." Others say, it's the "motion in the ocean" that is more important. We'll let you decide!

We've create a new post to see how these ships rank on a global scale. Carnival has a showing (albeit small) on the list of the 20 Largest Cruise Ships in the World ! Often we're asked if size affects price. The cost of a Carnival cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest Carnival ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary. To get a sense of pricing, please use our widget below.

As a result of the 2020-2021 cruise industry shutdown, Carnival Cruise Line sold off five Fantasy-class ships. Parent company Carnival Corporation sold off 21 cruise ships in total.

Three were sold for scrap metal, including  Carnival Fantasy ,  Carnival Imagination , and  Carnival Inspiration . Carnival Fascination  was sold to another cruise line that never got off the ground, and it was eventually scrapped in December 2021.

In 2022, it was announced that Carnival Sensation and Carnival Ecstasy would also be leaving the fleet.

What does gross registered tonnage mean?

Gross registered tonnage (GRT) doesn’t measure how much the cruise ship weighs but the total space inside. Every 100 cubic feet is equivalent to one gross registered ton.

Do all Carnival ships have Starlink internet?

By 2024, all Carnival Cruise Line ships will have Starlink wireless internet service.

Carnival Cruise Ships by Size and Age (2022)

Carnival Cruise Line's Mardi Gras at sea

Carnival Cruise Line has an active fleet of twenty-three ships with a further three ships due to join the fleet in the near future ( Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee are both new builds and a currently unnamed ship will transfer from sister brand Costa Cruises in late-2022.

The fleet is primarily based in the United States and sails frequently from the ports of Jacksonville (Florida), New York, Port Canaveral (Florida), San Francisco (California) and others.

Introduction to Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is often mistaken for the parent company Carnival Corporation. The brand is the biggest of the Carnival Corporation brands and is the first cruise line that started the business back in 1972, by founder Ted Arison.

Carnival primarily caters to the North American market with a lot of onboard activities, dining and entertainment geared towards the American clientele.

Back in 1972, Ted Arison founded the cruise line with just one ship – a former transatlantic liner under the name Empress of Canada . It was renamed Mardi Gras and marketed to young fun-loving individuals – a market that was not catered for at this time by cruise lines.

It proved very popular and the business grew quickly to take on a second ship in 1975 (calling it Carnivale ) and the third ship in 1978.

It wasn’t until 1982 that Carnival had its own first purpose-built cruise ship, Tropicale . This is also the first ship where the iconic ‘winged funnel’ first appeared and is now a trademark part of every Carnival cruise ship that people first spot when arriving at a cruise port.

By the 1990s, Carnival had introduced further classes of ships and kept on growing quickly throughout the 2000s too, by 2020 the company had 28 ships in its fleet.

Carnival Cruise Ship Frequently Asked Questions

Has a carnival cruise ship ever sunk.

No. Never. Carnival has had some ships with fires and engine issues over the years, but these are few and far between.

The only ship to sink (partially) was Costa Concordia and is a sister brand to Carnival Cruise Line – both owned by the parent company Carnival Corporation.

How much is a Carnival cruise ship?

$1 Billion USD is the approximate price of a new Carnival cruise ship ( Mardi Gras ) currently – this is due to the size and facilities on the ships. In comparison, Carnival Sunshine cost just $409 million when she was built in 1996.

What is Carnival’s biggest cruise ship?

Mardi Gras is Carnival’s biggest ship at 180,000 GRT and able to carry 5,282 passengers. More than double of their smallest cruise ship.

What is Carnival’s smallest cruise ship?

Carnival Ecstasy is Carnival’s smallest cruise ship at just 70,367 GRT and able to carry 2,056 passengers – less than half of their biggest cruise ship.

What is Carnival’s oldest cruise ship?

Carnival Ecstasy is the oldest Carnival ship. It entered service in 1991. However, it was refurbished in 2017 and is due to return in late 2022.

What is Carnival’s newest cruise ship?

Mardi Gras is Carnival’s latest ship and entered service in 2021.

Carnival Cruise Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Carnival Cruise Line - Carnival Vista

Carnival Cruise Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Carnival Cruise Line has one of the biggest gaps between its youngest and oldest cruise ships. The oldest ship in the fleet ( Carnival Ecstasy ) entered service in 1991 and the latest ship ( Marda Gras ) entered service in 2021 – three entire decades later.

Whilst the recent events in the world stopped the cruise lines in their tracks, Carnival will take the longest to get back on its feet as it was spending the most every month during the global cruise shutdown.

This is because it had the largest fleet at the time and one of the reasons why it sold off some of its older ships ( Carnival Fantasy, Carnival Fascination, Carnival Imagination, Carnival Inspiration and Carnival Sensation ) to other cruise lines or for scrap to save money.

Carnival does refurbish its ships and has undergone a large program to modernize its fleet – calling the newly refurbished ships ‘Fun Ship 2.0’ and adding the same bars and restaurants to the ships as found on some of their newer vessels.

Final Thoughts

Carnival is seen as a ‘fun’ cruise line – but it also has a reputation as a party line that attracts more budget-friendly cruisers. In the last few years, the cruise line has found a niche of cruisers who enjoy really fun things on their cruises, but also want a little luxury too.

Carnival Horizon aft area

Carnival Vista , Carnival Horizon , Carnival Panorama and now Mardi Gras all have a new class of cabin called ‘Havana Cabins’ which offer a more upmarket-style cabin in an area of the ship called the Havana Retreat.

Carnival Horizon Havana Retreat Bar area

This exclusive area offers its own pool, hot tubs and bars and is only accessible to passengers staying in the Havana Cabins. It is often located at the rear of each ship, affording excellent views from the aft out to sea and offering a tranquil area to rest from the rest of the fun onboard the ship.

Let the 'Celebration' begin: Cruise giant Carnival's biggest ship ever debuts this weekend

Gene Sloan

It's celebration time for Carnival Cruise Line fans. Literally.

The maiden voyage of the line's much-awaited Carnival Celebration will take place Sunday as the vessel departs Southampton, England, on a two-week transatlantic cruise to Miami.

Recently completed at a shipyard in Finland, the 15-deck-high ship is a sister vessel to Carnival's giant, 1-year-old Mardi Gras . Mardi Gras made waves in 2021 for its huge size and what may be the most unusual attraction on a cruise ship: a decktop roller coaster .

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The two ships both measure 181,808 tons, putting them in a tie for the position of biggest ship ever to sail for Carnival.

Both Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras are a whopping 35% bigger than the next-biggest Carnival ship currently afloat, the 3-year-old Carnival Panorama ; they are also bigger than all but 11 other cruise vessels in the world.

Like Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration has a roller coaster on its top deck. Dubbed Bolt: Ultimate Sea Coaster, it's similar to the roller coaster on Mardi Gras, with an 800-foot-long track. Its vehicles will reach speeds of 40 miles per hour — give or take.

Both of the ships are designed to hold up to 6,630 passengers. That's just a tad below the 7,084 passengers that can fit aboard Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas — the world's largest cruise ship.

Also like Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration will have a giant water park on its top deck and a far broader array of suites than earlier Carnival ships. However, the vessel won't be a carbon copy of its sister.

It'll offer several new features, including a revamped main interior area called Celebration Central. Known as Grand Central on Mardi Gras, the ocean-facing atrium area on Carnival Celebration will span three decks and provide access to multiple food and entertainment venues.

It'll offer daytime ocean views and nighttime shows on its stage, which has been enhanced as compared to the one on Mardi Gras and has more color-changing lights than the original — 1,400, to be exact. Designed to look like confetti, they'll be one of the first things passengers see when they board the ship.

The development of ships on the scale of Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras has been a big deal for Carnival. Until recently, the line had resisted the trend among major brands to build ever-bigger vessels that offer a supersized megaresort-at-sea experience.

Carnival's last new vessel, Carnival Panorama, didn't even crack the top 40 list of biggest ships when it debuted in 2019.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The vessel is scheduled to sail six- to eight-day voyages to the Bahamas and the Caribbean out of Miami. Fares start at $449 per person, not including taxes and fees.

Carnival Celebration is debuting just four weeks after Carnival retired its oldest and smallest ship , Carnival Ecstasy.

Carnival is also adding a second ship to its fleet this month with the arrival of Carnival Luminosa , a 13-year-old vessel that until recently was in the fleet of Carnival's sister brand Costa Cruises. The ship formerly was known as Costa Luminosa.

With the arrival of Carnival Celebration and Carnival Luminosa as well as the departure of Carnival Ecstasy, the line's fleet is increasing by one ship to 24 ships in all.

Carnival also will absorb two more Costa ships into its fleet in 2023 and 2024 as parent company Carnival Corp. pulls back on cruises in China, where Costa had been a major player.

A third ship in the same series as Carnival Celebration, to be called Carnival Jubilee, is on order from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The shipyard is owned by the same company that built Carnival Celebration and Mardi Gras.

TPG will be reporting live from Carnival Celebration's first sailing out of Miami, starting Nov. 21.

Carnival cruise ships by size: Here are the largest Carnival cruise ships, biggest to smallest, by tonnage

  • Post author: admin
  • Post published: April 30, 2023
  • Post category: Travel

What is the biggest Carnival cruise ship? Currently, the largest Carnival ship is Carnival Jubilee, in terms of both tonnage and passenger capacity. Set to debut in late 2023, it will tie sister ship Carnival Celebration, which first set sail in 2022, at 183,521 gross tons and 5,374 passengers at double occupancy.

It’s easy to remember that, generally, the newest ships are the largest Carnival ships. However, because Carnival Cruise Line has more than two dozen vessels in its fleet, it can be difficult to keep track of the ships that fall in between the newest and oldest.

So, to help you out, here is a list of Carnival ships, biggest to smallest, based on tonnage — a ship’s internal capacity, as measured by volume.

What is the biggest Carnival ship?

The biggest Carnival ships are Carnival Celebration (2022) and Carnival Jubilee, which will set sail for the line in late 2023. They’re tied in terms of size, each coming in at 183,521 gross tons and carrying 5,374 passengers at capacity.

Both vessels are throwback ships, which are named after two members of Carnival’s original fleet. They feature cutting-edge entertainment, luxury cabin options, a slew of cuisine choices, onboard breweries, tons of lounge areas and top-deck amusements — ropes courses, waterslides and even roller coasters — that rival what you might find at an amusement park.

What is the smallest Carnival ship?

The smallest Carnival cruise ship is Carnival Elation, the line’s second-oldest vessel. At 71,909 gross tons, it carries just 2,190 passengers — less than half the amount accommodated on ships in Carnival’s Excel class.

Are bigger Carnival ships coming?

At the time of publication, Carnival Cruise Line was building its newest ship, Carnival Jubilee. It’s one of two vessels — including its older sister Carnival Celebration — that shares the “biggest Carnival ship” title.

After Carnival Jubilee, the line has no ships on order for the first time in years.

What is the Carnival Jubilee tonnage?

Carnival Jubilee is 183,521 gross tons. Not to be confused with weight, gross registered tonnage measures a ship’s size in terms of internal volume and what a vessel can hold or contain. Each gross registered ton is equal to 100 cubic feet of space.

What’s the difference between big and small Carnival ships?

One of the biggest differences is that Carnival’s tiniest ships carry between 2,100 and 3,000 passengers, while its biggest can accommodate more than 5,000 people. In addition, the largest vessels measure more than 180,000 gross tons, while the smallest measure less than 90,000 gross registered tons.

Smaller ships don’t have space to offer as many attractions as huge vessels, but Carnival invested $500 million over five years to make its fleet more uniform, regardless of ship size.

Thanks to this initiative, all ships now feature venues including Alchemy Bar, Guy’s Burger Joint by Guy Fieri — now a staple, along with barbecue and microbrewed beer on some ships — and the Punchliner Comedy Club, among other popular amenities that are now Carnival hallmarks.

Besides the obvious size differences between big and small cruise ships, smaller ships also tend to be older than their larger counterparts.

Decor is a dead giveaway to the age of a Carnival ship. Older hardware boasts interiors designed by Joe Farcus, a renowned architect known for his kitschy, fun style that employs bright colors, whimsical art installations and neon lights. (He’s also responsible for the line’s iconic “whale tail” funnels.) Newer vessels tend to have a more toned-down look.

Finally, fares are a factor. The smaller the ship, the more likely it is to sail short, affordable itineraries. Major exceptions to this rule are Carnival Journeys voyages, which are offered a few times each year and feature extended itineraries of two weeks or longer.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage.

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard.

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers.

The MSC World Europa was floated out at the end of 2021 and was initially used as an accommodation vessel for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the ship berthed at Doha Port in Qatar during the tournament. Following the competition, the ship subsequently travelled several routes around the UAE, before sailing to the Mediterranean, where it has sailed itineraries since.

6. Royal Caribbean International – Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross tonnes

The first of many entries on this list operated by Royal Caribbean, Allure of the Seas weighs in at 225,282 gross tonnes. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet), she is only 50mm (2 inches) longer than her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas . The Allure has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,200 crew across 18 decks.

Built at the Turku Shipyard in Finland, the Allure took two years to build , floating out in 2010. She features six Wärtsilä 46 diesel engines with a total power output of 97 megawatts (130,053 horsepower). It is propelled by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters. The ship can travel at a cruising speed of 22 knots.

With a homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US, the Allure mainly serves itineraries around the Bahamas but she is scheduled to sail routes around the Mediterranean in 2025.

5. Royal Caribbean International – Oasis of the Seas : 226,838 gross tonnes

The oldest ship on this list, the Oasis of the Seas has been in service for over a decade. She was the biggest cruise ship at the time when floated out in 2009, with a gross tonnage of 226,838gt and a length of 360m (1,181 feet). The Oasis has a maximum capacity of 6,699 passengers and 2,181 staff across 18 decks.

The Oasis took two years to build at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, with the keel laid on 12 November 2007 and the ship arriving at her homeport of Port Everglades in Florida, US, on 13 November 2009.

The Oasis is powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines, which generate 5.6 megawatts (7,500 horsepower) each, alongside four bow thrusters. The main propulsion system consists of three 20-megawatt (26,820 horsepower) electric Azipod motors, resulting in a combined propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and a standard cruising speed of 23 knots.

The Oasis mainly operates routes around the Caribbean, but occasionally repositions to offer itineraries in the Mediterranean.

4. Royal Caribbean International – Harmony of the Seas : 226,963 gross tonnes

The third Oasis-class ship built by Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas weighed in bigger than her existing sister ships at launch in 2016, with 226,963 gross tonnage, but she has since been surpassed by newer vessels. With a total length of 362m (1,188 feet), Harmony has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,300 staff across 18 decks.

Royal Caribbean placed an order with STX France for the construction of Harmony of the Seas in December 2012. The first steel for the ship was cut at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in September 2013, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in May 2014.

The Harmony is powered by three 18.9-megawatt Wärtsilä 16V46 16-cylinder main generator diesel engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46 12-cylinder engines producing 13.9 megawatts each. The propulsion power is provided by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters and manoeuvring is assisted by four 5.5-megawatt Wärtsilä CT 3500 tunnel thrusters. The propulsion system results in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and enables the ship to sail at a standard speed of 23 knots.

Harmony of the Seas embarked on her inaugural seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain, in June 2016, and currently operates itineraries around the Western Caribbean from her homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US.

3. Royal Caribbean International – Symphony of the Seas : 228,081 gross tonnes

At launch in 2018, the Symphony of the Seas surpassed the Harmony as the biggest cruise ship, weighing in at 228,081 gross tonnes. Measuring 361m (1,185 feet), the Symphony has a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers and 2,200 staff across 18 decks and was the testing ground for Royal Caribbean's new muster drill . With a total length of 361m (1,185 feet), She is roughly 30 metres (98 feet) longer than the largest military ships , the US Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and the USS Gerald R. Ford .

The keel-laying ceremony for the Symphony of the Seas was held in October 2015 at STX’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in France, and the ship sailed out in June 2017. She is powered by six diesel sets, each composed of three Wärtsilä 16V46D engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46D engines, as well as three 20-megawatt electric Azipod main engines – resulting in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) of propulsion power and a standard cruising speed of 22 knots.

The Symphony commenced her seven-day maiden voyage from Barcelona in April 2018, and since then has mainly operated itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami, New York, and Fort Lauderdale.

2. Royal Caribbean International – Wonder of the Seas : 235,600 gross tonnes

Royal Caribbean's flagship, Wonder of the Seas is the fifth Oasis-class cruise ship built for the cruise company. Weighing in at 235,600 gross tonnes, the Wonder was the largest ship in the world when she was completed in January 2022. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet) in length, the 18-deck Wonder has a maximum capacity of 7,084 guests across its 2,867 staterooms, as well as housing 2,369 crew.

The Wonder sailed her maiden voyage in March 2022 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has since served itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami and Cape Canaveral.

1. Royal Caribbean International – Icon of the Seas : 248,663 gross tonnes

Weighing 248,663 gross tonnes and measuring 365 metres (1,1967 feet), the Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. Christened on 23 January 2024, the Icon has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew across 20 decks. She is the lead ship of the new Icon-class, with a sister ship the Star of the Seas due to be delivered in 2025 and another ship planned for delivery in 2026.

Built by Meyer Turku in Finland, the Icon is the first ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet that can be powered by LNG. It uses three Wärtsilä 14V46DF and three Wärtsilä 12V46DF for its main generator engines, which provide 67.5 megawatts of energy to run the ship. She is propelled by three 20-megawatt Azipod thrusters as well as five 4.8-megawatt Wärtsilä WTT-45 CP bow thrusters, with a cruising speed of 22 knots.

Carnival Ships by Size: Biggest to Smallest

carnival cruise ship biggest

Book Your Next Amazing Cruise with Travel Leader, Jeffrey Cleary

Carnival Cruise Line is one of the largest cruise lines in the world, so to keep track of its growing fleet, we’ve decided to organize Carnival ships by size.

We’ve listed all the Carnival ships in size order by gross tonnage, starting with the largest and ending with the smallest in the fleet. We’ve also included a description of each ship, so if you’re not fully familiar with the cruise line, you can find out more.

With the Carnival fleet constantly evolving with new ships and upgraded ones, it’s always been a popular question to know which ship is the biggest and which is the smallest. Now you are about to find out!

Carnival Cruise Ships By Size

To cut it short, the largest Carnival cruise ship right now is the 183,521 gross-ton Carnival Jubilee , the third Excel-class vessel that joined the fleet at the end of 2023. The ship is just about identical to the sister ship Carnival Celebration , which joined the fleet in 2022.

The list goes all the way down to the smallest ship, the 70,367 gross ton  Carnival Paradise , a much older vessel that’s part of the Fantasy class.

Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Jubilee Sea Trials

  • Gross Tonnage: 183,521
  • Guest Capacity: 5,374
  • Crew Capacity: 1,735
  • Length: 1,130 Feet
  • Passenger Decks: 15

If you’re an avid follower of the cruise industry, you’ll no doubt know that Carnival Jubilee joined the fleet in December 2023 and was even voted the best new cruise ship of that year. The ship celebrated its naming ceremony with godmother Gwen Stefani in February 2024.

The third Excel class vessel follows the same design and features as her sister ships and the biggest Carnival cruise ship, with a few adjustments. There are two new themed zones, including The Currents, which spans Deck 6 and Deck 7, and The Shores zone, which also features venues Coastal Slice, Marina Bar, Rudi’s Seagrill, and Cucina del Capitano. At the moment, C

Carnival Celebration

Carnival Celebration Cruise Ship

  • Gross Tonnage: 183,521

The ship is the second in the Excel class and is currently the second-largest Carnival ship in the fleet. Just like Mardi Gras , Carnival Celebration was also constructed at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland and LNG-powered, which debuted in November 2022.

This vessel is one of the biggest in the fleet and features a total of six themed zones, including Celebration Central, Summer Landing, 820 Biscayne, The Gateway, Lido, and The Ultimate Playground. The ship also features a roller coaster and the same dining venues found on Mardi Gras.

Carnival Mardi Gras

Carnival Mardi Gras Cruise Ship

  • Gross Tonnage: 180,800
  • Guest Capacity: 5,282

This is the first Excel class cruise ship in the fleet and the first in the fleet powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG). The large new vessel introduced several new features and venues, including the first-ever BOLT Roller Coaster , Emeril’s Bistro, Rudi’s Seagrill, Street Eats, Fortune Teller Bar, and more. Mardi Gras has six different zones for passengers to enjoy, including Grand Central, French Quarter, Summer Landing, La Piazza, Lido, and The Ultimate Playground.

Mardi Gras was the first to be constructed in Finland since the Spirit class ships. The ship has started a new era of design for the cruise line and sets the standard for the following sister ships in the same class.

Carnival Venezia

Carnival Venezia Cruise Ship

  • Gross Tonnage: 135,225
  • Guest Capacity: 4,090
  • Crew Capacity: 1,424
  • Length: 1,061 Feet

The Carnival cruise ship is just slightly larger than the Vista-class vessels and is the first in the fleet that offers Italian-style cruising. Carnival Venezia was transferred from sister brand Costa Cruises in March 2023 and debuted in New York City in June 2023, after a dry dock transformation in Cadiz, Spain. The ship has stunning decor that’s all Italian-inspired and very different from your typical Carnival fun ship interior.

Carnival Panorama

Carnival Panorama Cruise Ship

  • Gross Tonnage: 133,500
  • Guest Capacity: 4,008
  • Crew Capacity: 1,450
  • Length: 1,055 Feet

The final Vista class ship joined the fleet in December 2019 and is the first new Carnival cruise ship in 20 years to be based on the U.S. West Coast. She features the first Sky Zone Trampoline Park at Sea, which replaced the IMAX Thater found on sister ships  Carnival Vista  and  Carnival  Horizon.

Carnival Panorama  is based on the U.S. West Coast sailing week-long Mexican Riviera cruises, including calls to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.

Carnival Horizon

Carnival Horizon Cruise Ship

  • Guest Capacity: 3,960

The vessel is the second Vista-class ship and the largest in the fleet until Carnival Panorama arrived. Although she offers many of the same features, Carnival Horizon has a slightly larger guest capacity than its sister ship, Carnival Vista.

Carnival Horizon  was the first ship to introduce a new  Guy Fieri’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse  venue, Dr. Seuss WaterWorks, and a dedicated Teppanyaki restaurant.

Carnival Vista

Carnival Vista Cruise Ship

  • Guest Capacity: 3,934

The first in her class, Carnival Vista , brought brand new features to the Carnival fleet and entered service in Spring 2016. The ship was the first to introduce SkyRide, a big ride-like experience located on the open deck at the very top of the ship. The ship also has its own onboard brewery with exclusive tastes just for those cruising on the ship.

Carnival Breeze

Carnival Breeze Cruise Ship

  • Gross Tonnage: 130,000
  • Guest Capacity: 3,690
  • Length: 1,004 Feet

The last ship in the Dream class started sailing for Carnival Cruise Line in 2012.  Carnival Breeze  was the flagship for a while as there wasn’t a new ship until  Carnival Vista  arrived in 2016.

The ship has some really good features, and during dry docks, a new Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Pig & Anchor BBQ have been added.  Carnival Breeze  was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debuted on March 6, 2012.

Carnival Magic

Carnival Magic Cruise Ship

The vessel is the second Dream-class vessel built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Italy. She debuted on May 1, 2011, the same year all the new FUN 2.0 upgrades were introduced.

Carnival Dream

Carnival Dream Cruise Ship

  • Guest Capacity: 3,646

This is where the Dream class all started, which is an evolution of the popular Conquest-class ships.  Carnival Dream  changed the layout compared to ships before her and had a distinct red theme throughout. However, she no longer holds the top spot among Carnival ships by size.

All the latest FUN features were added during a 217 dry dock.  Carnival Dream  debuted on September 21, 2009, and was built at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone, Italy.

Carnival Splendor

Carnival Splendor Cruise Ship

  • Gross Tonnage: 113,300
  • Guest Capacity: 3,012
  • Length: 952 Feet

It’s kind of an odd ship and the only one of her class in the fleet. However, sister cruise line Costa Cruises does have an identical Splendor class ship.  Splendor  was built at the Fincantieri Genoa shipyard and sailed her maiden cruise on July 2, 2008. The ship spent a season sailing the Baltic, which is very rare for Carnival. Since the end of 2019, the ship has been based in Australia .

Carnival Freedom

Carnival Freedom In Port Canaveral

  • Gross Tonnage: 110,000
  • Guest Capacity: 2,980

The ship is the final Conquest class cruise ship, which has proved extremely popular for the cruise line. Like many ships in the fleet, Carnival Freedom was built by Fincantieri and cost $500 Million. She departed on her maiden voyage on March 14, 2007. Even though she’s not among the largest Carnival ships by size, she ends a final class and still offers a great cruising experience for all.

Carnival Liberty

Carnival Liberty Cruise Ship

  • Guest Capacity: 2,974

The ship was the first in the fleet to receive all the FUN 2.0 upgrades during a huge refurbishment in 2011. Updates included the hugely popular Guy’s Burger Joint, which has since become an important food venue across the fleet. Carnival Liberty’s inaugural cruise departed on July 20, 2005.

Carnival Valor

Carnival Valor Cruise Ship

Carnival Valor is the third in the Conquest class. When it comes to Carnival ships by size, she may not be at the top of the list, but she continues to offer a large ship experience and expand the cruise line even further. The ship received all the latest FUN 2.0 onboard features during a huge dry dock in 2016.

Carnival Glory

Carnival Glory

Glory was another large ship for Carnival Cruise Line at the time, but now, this tonnage would not be considered the biggest. Like her sister ships, Carnival Glory was built in Italy and set off on her inaugural sailing on July 14, 2003. The ship had a fairly recent refurbishment in 2022, so it is up to date.

Carnival Conquest

Carnival Conquest Departure

The very first Conquest-class ship, Carnival Conquest , was built by Fincantieri in Italy and departed on her inaugural cruise on November 15, 2002. It started a new era for the cruise line and a new shipbuilding boom.

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Victory  is in the same class as  Carnival Triumph  and just smaller than the popular Conquest class ships. The ship was built by Fincantieri in Italy and cost $430 Million. A major refurbishment was completed in Spring 2018, where all the latest FUN 2.0 upgrades were added along with newly added cabins, and she was renamed  Carnival Radiance .

  • Gross Tonnage: 70,367

The ship is slightly newer than  Carnival Elation  but has slightly lower gross tonnage. It is part of the Fantasy class and sailed its inaugural cruise on December 6, 1998. Carnival Paradise underwent a dry dock in October 2023 and is fully updated with all the latest Carnival features.

Are Even Bigger Carnival Cruise Ships Coming?

On February 13, 2024, the parent company,  Carnival Corporation, announced  it had ordered another large Excel-class cruise ship from the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, with delivery in 2027.

Even though the yet-to-be-named ship will be the same class as sister ships  Mardi Gras ,  Carnival Celebration , and  Carnival Jubilee , she could have a slightly larger tonnage and capacity, depending on design adjustments.

What is the Biggest Carnival Ship?

As of January 2024, the largest Carnival ship by size is the Carnival Jubilee, which joined the fleet in December 2023. She is large at 183,521 gross tons, a guest capacity of 5,374 at double occupancy, but that goes even higher with a maximum passenger capacity of 6,631. The third Excel class ship also has a crew capacity of 1,735.

What is the Smallest Carnival Ship?

As of March 10, 2024, the smallest Carnival ship is the 70,367 gross ton Carnival Paradise, which entered service in 1998. The vessel is part of the Fantasy class and has a much older design compared to newer vessels in the fleet. Carnival Paradise has a length of 855 feet and 11 passenger decks.

What Was the Size of Former Carnival Ships?

Carnival Cruise Line has a total of 13 former ships, and sadly, they have all been scrapped at various scrapyards, including in Turkey and India. Here’s a list of all the former Carnival cruise ships by the largest size to the smallest size:

We’ll See You Onboard!

The Carnival Cruise Line fleet by size has changed a lot through the years. Time will tell if the cruise line will rival the size of Royal Caribbean cruise ships in the future.

How the cheapest interior and balcony cabins on Carnival's new cruise ship compare — and why the pricier one is worth it

  • Carnival's new Carnival Firenze  cruise ship set sail in late April.
  • Its interior cabins are $160 cheaper per person than the ones with balconies.
  • The cramped balcony stateroom is worth the additional cost.

Insider Today

I finally realized that my parents are, in fact, always right. Unfortunately, learning my lesson took a stint in a windowless cabin on a Carnival cruise .

In mid-May, I found myself stuck on a four-night Carnival Firenze cruise with my family. I was there for work — they were there to enjoy the sun. And that they did, as they luxuriated in a cabin with a balcony while I was stuck in a drab, windowless dungeon.

Never again will I think of my parents as 'snobby' for wanting the more expensive accommodation (sorry, Mom and Dad).

carnival cruise ship biggest

My parents, occasional cruisers, have always preferred staterooms with balconies. After my stint in the ship's interior accommodation, I now understand why balconies are the most popular cabin category.

For Firenze's cheapest itinerary in 2024 — a four-night roundtrip voyage from Long Beach, California, to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico — a dual-occupancy interior cabin starts at $359 per person.

Ones with balconies command a minimum of $519 per person.

That's a $160 difference — and well worth the extra cash.

Carnival Firenze, the company’s newest vessel, set sail in April.

carnival cruise ship biggest

But that doesn't mean it's a brand-new ship.

Firenze had initially joined the fleet of another Carnival Corp brand , Costa Cruises, in 2020 with plans to launch in China — that is, until the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carnival Cruise Line then acquired Firenze and its sister ship, Venezia, in 2022 to grow its US footprint amid "strong interest in people wanting to sail with us," a Carnival spokesperson told Business Insider.

But my interior cabin looked more like an ancient motel than a four-year-old ship.

The spokesperson said Firenze underwent a two-month refresh to "install the Carnival Fun Italian Style Concept."

This Italianized vision came as a photo of Florence, Italy, behind my bed, half covered by pillows. It's for the best — the print looked misplaced, unnecessary, and tacky.

At least it matched the color palette of the equally ugly carpet.

The furniture was functional, but that doesn’t mean it was pretty.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The gray chaise clashed with the bafflingly ugly yellow and red carpet, while the faux marble and wood side table looked as cheap as my fare.

Thankfully, I have no gripes about the desk and closet. Both were sizable and looked like ones I've seen on more expensive and modern cruise ships.

'Expensive' and 'modern' could be the antithesis of my bathroom. It was a total eyesore.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The yellow and red tiles would've been better suited in a McDonald's. But no design crime was bigger than the lack of designated storage units.

The only shelving came preoccupied with tissue boxes and toilet paper rolls, an unnecessary amenity given that my cabin attendant cleaned and restocked my room daily. I would've rather had one less spare toilet paper roll if that meant I could keep my skincare products inside the bathroom instead of out on the desk.

On the bright side, the bathroom and bedroom felt surprisingly spacious for 150 square feet.

carnival cruise ship biggest

Unbeknownst to me, Carnival had put me in one of the ship's accessible, wheelchair-friendly accommodations. As a person without physical disabilities, this meant the shower — a curtain surrounding floor drains — was one of the largest I've had at sea.

Back in the living room, I could've starfished on the floor without hitting any furniture.

Complaints about its appearance aside, the room was large and almost perfectly functional — easily worth its $90-a-night price tag.

carnival cruise ship biggest

But without any natural light, the dated, dark, and mismatched furniture made my cabin look more like a drab hospital room.

Think I'm being dramatic? One look at my parent's balcony cabin will prove my point.

Some of the furniture in my dungeon and their breezy hotel room at sea looked identical.

carnival cruise ship biggest

But the light-filled room and less hideous carpet made the chaise and side table feel more at home.

Unfortunately, nothing could've saved the still misplaced-looking photo of Italy.

However, no amount of natural light could've saved the stateroom from feeling cramped.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The cabin is 72 square feet larger than my interior one. But don't expect to starfish here: The narrow layout and furniture didn't leave much room to spare.

Our four-person family could comfortably lounge in my interior room. Four people inside the balcony cabin required flexible maneuvering around each other and the furniture.

The tiny bathroom made the one in my interior accommodation feel palatial.

carnival cruise ship biggest

Yet, despite being much smaller, the extra shelving — noticeably deprived of excess paper products — made this bathroom more functional.

But the tight layout is worth it for the private outdoor space and light.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The ocean breeze and view provided the perfect backdrop for my parent's peaceful early mornings.

Meanwhile, my early mornings were spent in a dingy, liminal space-like bedroom, never fully sure of the exact time. I felt like a gremlin who lived in perpetual darkness, only reminded that the sun had, in fact, risen when I stopped by my family's bright cabin.

Seeing my mom lounge around with the balcony door cracked open, reading some documents without turning the lights on, was enviable.

A quiet outdoor space is especially important on a ship like Carnival Firenze.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The vessel is loud and rowdy, as is expected of a Carnival cruise. I struggled to find a quiet, relaxing lounge that wasn't overwhelmed by screaming children, screaming adults, or poorly mixed music.

Our cabins were the only truly quiet spaces on the ship. And I'd much rather read a book on a balcony with ocean views than in a dreary, dark interior stateroom.

I should probably add an asterisk next to 'truly quiet spaces.'

carnival cruise ship biggest

The interior and balcony accommodations did share one terrible similarity: ultra-thin walls.

Rowdy passersby could be heard clearly from inside both rooms. The neighbors' TV and late-night conversations constantly woke my dad up. (Maybe my interior cabin wasn't so bad after all.)

But, like I said, I'd trade a gloomy stateroom for a balcony and the chance to eavesdrop on my neighbors.

As usual, my parent's decision to book a balcony instead of an interior cabin was the way to go.

Unless you're on an ultra-strict budget, it'll be worth the additional cost. A little sun and fresh air can go a long way for your sanity, especially on a ship where silence and peace are an upcharged luxury.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

carnival cruise ship biggest

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

carnival cruise ship biggest

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

You won't be 'overcrowded by thousands of tourists': What to know about Montreal cruises

carnival cruise ship biggest

  • Montreal is the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province.
  • The city offers a relatively quaint cruise experience.
  • The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023.

I strolled beside patches of purple flowers on a wooden walkway at the Port of Montreal on a recent afternoon. The Promenade d'Iberville green roof, with western red cedar decking and more than 24,000 aromatic and flowering plants, was built on top of the city’s main cruise terminal.

The effect was less industrial infrastructure – like many ports – and more charming urban park.

Montreal may be the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province, but it offers a relatively quaint cruise experience. Bridges between Montreal and Quebec City block vessels with air draft – the distance from the waterline to the highest point on a ship – over 49 meters (or about 161 feet) from berthing at its facilities in Old Montreal.

The ships that visit are generally smaller (though the city can accommodate those with a maximum 50-meter air draft east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge).

“We are positioning Montreal as a niche port for luxury ships,” Yves Gilson, Associate Director, Cruises at the Port of Montreal, told USA TODAY during a visit in May. Here’s what to know about sailings into and out of the city.

The cruise inventory tends to be upscale

Montreal typically welcomes ships carrying 2,000 passengers or less from a number of upscale cruise lines, which tend to operate ships with lower capacity. Those include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Viking, Ponant and more. Though not a luxury brand, one of the city’s “main client(s)” is Holland America Line, which will send its 1,432-guest Volendam ship there this season.

The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023. By contrast, its neighbor to the northeast, Quebec City, saw 154,000 passengers . Despite its smaller population, large ships from operators like Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line will visit Quebec City this season (along with smaller vessels).

Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, added that it’s not just ocean cruise ships that stop in Montreal. “There are river cruises that can get in and out of there as well,” he said.

Gilson noted that the city “could absorb” traffic from bigger ships if not for the bridges. “But on the other hand, the experience for the guest is marvelous because you know they will not be overcrowded by thousands of tourists,” he said.

You can hit the ground walking

The main cruise terminal is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Old Montreal’s Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica and the Place d’Armes are less than a 10-minute walk away, and numerous restaurants, shops, and museums are also nearby.

I grabbed a prosciutto sandwich at Italian grocery store Dispensa; ate on a bench outside; picked up a coffee at Cafecito and was able to be at the main terminal within 15 minutes or so on foot, while taking in views of the water and architectural landmarks like Habitat 67.

There are also multiple close bicycle rental and Metro stations, and waiting taxis (the port works with software platform, Véco Taxi, which gives priority to electric vehicles).

Gilson said more lines are offering overnight stays in Montreal, giving guests more time to explore.

When is the best time for a Montreal cruise?

Montreal’s cruise season begins in May and ends in October, hitting its peak during the last two months of that period. Feldman said fall foliage is a particular draw for passengers.

Montreal often features on Canada and New England itineraries alongside ports such as Boston, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The port’s cruise calendar can be found by clicking here .

The sailings tend to last around 10 to 14 days. “The distances between the ports in this region can be significant and navigation through areas like the St. Lawrence River and around the Gulf of Maine take time,” he said. Passengers on those sailings are looking for a “more immersive experience.”

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise?: Here's why these travelers splurged

“Longer itineraries allow for more time in each port and often include scenic cruising days,” he added.

Cruise ships have historically avoided the area when cold sets in, but that could soon change: Ponant’s icebreaking Le Commandant Charcot will offer sailings in St. Lawrence in the winter of 2025. While the ship will not visit Montreal due to its size – though it will stop in Quebec City – Gilson hopes it will mark a shift.

“And eventually we believe that all the cruise lines will get into the St. Lawrence during the winter,” he said. “So, it's gonna be an all-year-round cruise destination.”

How a New Line of Expedition Ships Is Turning the Tides on Polar Seas

High-tech features are making treacherous ocean passages feel tame

Laura Kiniry

Laura Kiniry

Travel Correspondent

Viking cruise ship in Antarctica

The first time I found myself in the waters surrounding South America’s southern tip, in 2013, I spent hours each day in my cabin, fighting off constant nausea. We were navigating the sea around Cape Horn, a notoriously rough passage, and winds were sweeping our “polar approved” vessel from side to side, whipping up massive waves and sending my stomach into a frenzy.

I swore that I’d never even consider taking a ship through these waters again, let alone the Drake Passage , the approximately 600-mile stretch that lies between the bottom tip of South America and the Antarctic Peninsula with a reputation for being one of the most perilous on the planet. The passage has claimed the lives of some 20,000 sailors over the years. But when an opportunity came for me to sail to Antarctica a decade later, I couldn’t say no. Thankfully, I found that polar expedition vessels had come a long way in those ten years. Not only was I able to enjoy the scenery, thanks to a bevy of tech-savvy features that helped steady both the ship and my stomach, but I even returned to Antarctica for a second go—braving the Drake Passage crossing a total of four times after swearing it off for good.

While navigating polar waters remains extremely tough, a new line of expedition cruise ships—smaller vessels that are purposely built by various companies for navigating remote areas—has been turning the tides on these treacherous seas and making them much more manageable for both vessels and passengers alike. By combining comfort and efficiency with overall safety through an abundance of high-tech features, and maximizing everything from speed to stability, these purpose-built vessels are making the dreaded “Drake Shake” (the passage’s less-than-savory nickname) feel more like the “Drake Lake,” even on its wildest days.

Why repurposed research vessels weren’t the best fit

When traveler expeditions first started heading to Antarctica in the late 1960s , most of the ships being used were old Russian research vessels and converted car ferries that had been outfitted with guest cabins. They were rugged and far from luxury, but each of these ships had been “polar approved.” This meant they’d undergone substantial modifications—such as rebuilding the entire body of the ship from sheets of metal to thicker, highly durable steel—to allow them to operate in polar waters. Still, they were a far cry from the purpose-built ships of today.

A zodiac returns to Lindblad's Resolution at Peterman Island in Antarctica

Even Lindblad Expeditions’ Explorer ship, one of the company’s still-operational expedition ships, which launched in 2008, began service as a coastal Norwegian passenger and ice ferry. “She was already ice class,” a term meaning it was built to safely navigate through sea ice, says Tyler Skarda , Lindblad’s chief maritime officer. “Lindblad then equipped her with mud rooms to store excursion equipment, and outfitted her with an ice-strengthened hull.”

It wasn’t until the last decade that some of the major players in the cruise industry—companies like Lindblad, Viking Cruises, Aurora Expeditions and Ponant, which includes ships used by Smithsonian Journeys —began purposely constructing expedition ships. According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the world’s largest cruise industry trade association, 2023 saw a record 81 expedition cruise ships operating , a number that more than quadrupled from a decade ago. Many of these ships have been intentionally built for the expedition cruise industry. With passenger capacities ranging anywhere from 60 to 375 or even more, these smaller vessels are designed specifically for crossing waters like the Drake, as well as the ice-laden polar regions of both Antarctica and the Arctic.

“Antarctica is where the money is,” says Jason Flesher, an expedition operations director with Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours who’s been involved with expedition cruising since 2010. “It’s still that unattainable, unreachable frontier for so many.”

The technology of purpose-built ships

In order to build ships strong and technically savvy enough to traverse through some of the most remote and challenging landscapes on Earth, several cruise companies borrowed designs from other parts of the shipping industry. For example, both Lindblad and Aurora Expeditions turned to Ulstein , a family-owned and internationally renowned shipbuilder, to create their innovative hull design. Ulstein first launched its patented X-Bow concept in 2005 as a way for shipping vessels to service the huge offshore oil and gas industry in the exceptionally rough North Sea.

From its inception, the X-Bow was a hit. Its sloped design offers a smoother ride both by splitting the energy of the waves as they hit a ship and by reducing the slamming impact that comes with water hitting the underside of the bow. “The X-Bow mitigates any pitching through creating buoyancy, so that ships like Lindblad’s Resolution and Endurance can basically glide through eight meter [26-feet-high] seas,” says Skarda. “It also allows these ships to keep up speed, unlike traditionally bowed ships, where you have to slow down in order to keep the back end of a ship from coming out of the water.”

Tomas Holik , vice president of operations at Aurora, says the revolutionary design also comes in handy during severe weather conditions. “While other ships may have to wait for conditions to improve,” he says, “the X-Bow allows our expedition ships to continue.”

Companies such as Lindblad, Scenic Eclipse and Viking have also outfitted their expedition vessels with Azipod , a gearless, steerable propulsion system that allows ships to maneuver 360 degrees with superb precision. First developed in the late 1980s for vessels maintaining Finland’s coastal fairways, these electric units permit a ship’s main propellers to act as thrusters, eliminating any need for separate thrusters, which can add drag, or extra resistance, to the hull.

“One of the amazing capabilities that Azipods give us,” says Skarda, “is that rather than having fixed shafts and propellers, which are typically the first things to get damaged in the ice, we’re instead able to get into a situation where the ship sees an ice ridge, and then they can almost turn around on a dime. It then uses the Azipod propulsion system to actually flush the ice to the side. If a ship with a conventional propulsion system hits the ice with one of their propellers or the shaft or the rudder, they’re going to have a problem.”

Another game changer is the computer-controlled Dynamic Positioning (DP) System , used to automatically maintain a ship’s position without mooring lines or anchors. Ships like Scenic Eclipse I and II and Viking Polaris and Octantis use it in shallow, fragile areas to minimize harm to seabeds. “With the DP system, all it takes is the push of a button, and the computer takes over everything,” says Flesher, of Scenic. “The thrusters, the propulsion, the stabilizers—so no matter what outside forces are against the ship, she holds point and she won’t move.”

While all high-end expedition cruise ships are equipped with stabilizers to smooth out the ride, the custom-built ones on Scenic Eclipse I and II are 50 percent larger than those on other vessels. They’re also zero-speed, meaning they minimize drag by maximizing lift, greatly reducing any rolling caused by rough seas. A computerized system allows them to move up and down automatically, counteracting any winds or swells that the ships encounter. Actually, the stability of the ships when they’re stationary is so good, it’s akin to treading water.

When it comes to sustainability, all new cruise ships debuting between 2023 and 2028 will be primarily powered by liquefied natural gas , according to CLIA. Launched in 2020, Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot even became the first luxury hybrid electric polar exploration ship powered by this cleaner fossil fuel, which emits very little sulfur. Artificial intelligence is another tool that can make modern expedition ships more efficient by forecasting sea ice before it forms, allowing vessels to strategically plan routes around it.

All of these technologies mean a smoother ride for passengers, who get the adventure of navigating rough seas without putting their lives in peril like their precursors .

Weighing options

Although converted polar-class vessels are still the best option for budget travelers heading to Antarctica, Flesher says it’s going to include “a lot more bounce” to get there. “These are the ships where the dining room chairs are chained to the floor,” he says, “and the movement? Believe me, you feel it.”

Viking Octantis

While today’s purpose-built expedition ships may have oversized stabilizers to help steady them in winds and waves, and strengthened hulls to protect their cargo and machinery, they’re not entirely foolproof. Unforeseen natural occurrences (like the rogue wave that hit a ship on its return from Antarctica in 2022) are extremely rare, but they certainly can happen. “Something like a [rogue wave] will have an impact on a vessel, regardless of its size and technical prowess,” says Holik, of Aurora Expeditions.

Crossing the Drake Passage may still have its risks, but they’re minimal in comparison to the days of legendary polar explorers like Roald Amundsen and Ernest Shackleton . In the case of today’s purpose-class expedition vessels, it’s also a lot more comfortable to boot.

As someone who’s prone to seasickness, I only felt the slightest bit queasy (thanks, in part, to some ginger tablets and Dramamine) while traversing the infamous sea. Definitely not enough to keep me from taking in the breathtaking scenery while following the sea paths of legends.
