What to do in Champagne?

In between wine tastings and tours in Champagne, don't forget to visit the beautiful city of  Reims . The main city in the Marne department is renowned for its glorious Gothic cathedral, where French kings were crowned. Reims is one of the most charming and historical cities in France and it was founded by the Gauls.  Another city you need to visit is  Épernay , the official capital of the Champagne wine region, and stroll on the Avenue de Champagne.

What to taste in Champagne?

Well, you perfectly know what you are going to taste at wine tastings and tours in Champagne, but here are some very simple  tasting notes  to get ready for some  Champagne ! Thanks to the "traditional method", Champagne is always very bubbly. The most recognizable aromas are those of almond, citrus, and peach while more light tastes are those of orange and cherries. Champagne has very French cheesy aromas that come from the aging process.

What to expect from wine tastings and tours in Champagne?

Champagne wine region offers a great variety of wine tasting and tour experiences. Wine tastings and tours in Champagne are often done in luxurious tasting halls, and before the Champagne tasting, you get to  stroll in the vineyards , visit a  museum  dedicated to the history of the production of Champagne, or get to see a  3D photo gallery  (at  Dom Caudron ).  The possibilities to take part in unforgettable wine tastings and tours in Champagne are endless.

More About Champagne

Explore the route de champagne….

“Come quick, I am drinking the stars!” – with these words, the monk Dom Pérignon is said to have announced his invention of Champagne in the late 17th century. And he certainly wouldn’t be the first to be driven to poetic paroxysms by the scintillating wines of the Champagne region.

Alas, like so many great stories, this is probably something of a myth. The romantic quote was actually first used in an advertising campaign in the 1880s. And there’s strong evidence to suggest that sparkling wine was first produced intentionally around 1662 by Christopher Merret, a scientist from Gloucester. So perhaps it’s closer to West Country scrumpy than we might think.

“I drink Champagne when I’m happy”

Myths aside, there can be no doubt that Champagne is the benchmark by which all other sparkling wines are judged. Lily Bollinger, scion of the famous Champagne house famously said, “I drink Champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.”

Whilst we would never dream of arguing with Mademoiselle Bollinger and we too are more than happy to drink Champagne anywhere, anytime, few things can beat drinking this most exquisite of drinks in the very region where it is produced.

Champagne Activities

Popular places to visit.

Of course, on our SmoothRed Champagne tours you’ll have plenty of chances to taste the region’s favourite export. But beyond the châteaux you’ll also want to visit some of its most popular attractions too.

Like the 13th century cathedral in the heart of romantic Reims. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the greatest gothic cathedrals in all of northern France. And, if you’re that way inclined, you might like to try counting all its 2,303 statues. Although you will end up with a sore neck.

Visit Epernay

Further south, in the heart of Champagne country, the small town of Epernay is home to many of the most famous producers of fizz. From Moët & Chandon to Perrier-Jouët, it’s a delightful place to spend an easy afternoon wandering on foot between Champagne houses and cellars.

Then head a few miles southeast to the scenic Lac du Der, the largest reservoir in Europe and a great place to relax or indulge in a spot of bird-watching. Or maybe visit the historic old town of Troyes to marvel at its gorgeous half-timbered houses.

And let’s not forget Hautvilliers, the lively vignerons village famous for its abbey where Dom Pérignon plied his trade as cellar-master. Not to mention other famous Champagne villages like Rilly-la-Montagne and Verzy.

Champagne Wine Guide

Wine and cuisine in champagne.

The Champagne region’s terroir is unique. Its Northern location, rugged climate, chalky soil and rolling countryside make it the ideal place to grow the Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay grapes that are predominantly used to make Champagne.

We say predominantly because technically Champagne can use a number of other grapes too. Varietals such as Petit Meslier, Petit Blanc and Arbane are grown in very small quantities and added to blends, with some houses even producing wines made solely from one or more of these lesser known grapes.

The grapes of Champagne

The first, Pinot Noir, is most widely planted in the Aube region, while the second, Pinot Meunier takes up much of the Vallée de la Marne. The Côte des Blancs is dedicated almost exclusively to Chardonnay.

And, of course, they take their regional boundaries seriously in Champagne. Since 1942 the region has been overseen by the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (CIVC), which rates vintages based on the quality of their grapes and vineyards. Nice work if you can get it.

Champagne cuisine

Now, some would say you shouldn’t really eat while drinking Champagne, but we think those people can fizz off. From refined dining like oysters and snails in Champagne sauce, to the region’s rustic pleasures of venison, boar, rabbit and pheasant, you can be sure to dine every bit as well as you drink on one of our champagne tours.

Champagne Gourmet Guide

Whilst some people believe one shouldn’t really eat while enjoying the wines of Champagne, in fact, the acidity and body of the drink make it a surprisingly good food wine. Champagne, be it pink, vintage or non-vintage, can be paired with a range of foods, with the latter – perhaps counter-intuitively – a good pick for fish and chips. The extra body of pink fizz makes it a little more flexible, whilst the extra depth and yeastiness of some vintage bottles makes them perfect to pair with wild mushrooms, parmesan or, for maximum decadence, truffles!

In terms of local delicacies to try on a visit to Champagne you have lots to choose from. Reims, the capital of the region, is famed for ham and, rather handily, mustard. In Troyes, andouillette is an offal sausage unlikely to appeal to all. Various cheeses are produced locally and one of those, Langres, is a great nibble alongside Champagne.

For those with a sweeter tooth, les biscuits roses de Reims , or pink biscuits, date to the 17 th century and are a crunchy treat, whilst Champagne-filled chocolate truffles are another fabulous, decadent treat.

There is no shortage of stunning restaurants in Reims, Epernay, Troyes and Champagne’s smaller towns and villages. From Michelin-starred establishments perfect for that special meal to local bistros serving venison, wild boar, rabbit or pheasant, you will be spoiled for choice. Expect to see Champagne in sauces, foams and deserts and, who knows, you might even get to drink a glass or two of the fizzy stuff on your Champagne wine holiday!

Best Champagne Tours and Tastings in Champagne, France

  • By Angelika Pokovba
  • March 27, 2024

Tasting of premier cru sparkling white wine champagne with view on green pinot noir, meunier vineyards of Hautvillers, Champagne, France

A favorite drink and a gem to visit, Champagne is where sparkling dreams come true—quite literally, after you’ve had a few glasses. While champagne is renowned for being a social and oftentimes celebratory drink, the region itself is quite quaint and exudes a fairytale kind of sleepiness as you drive through the towns of Épernay, Aÿ, and more.

Today, the Champagne region is renowned for its gothic architecture, a slew of Michelin-starred restaurants, and, of course, its sparkling wine . The best part is that the commercial centers of Champagne—Reims and Épernay—are only 90 minutes from Paris, with some trains arriving there in just 45 minutes. Think of Champagne as a weekend getaway or day trip that feels celebratory, but doesn’t really need much occasion.

In recent years, tasting rooms have sprung up at some of the region’s most esteemed estates, so you can sample some of the finest champagnes on the actual vineyards where they are produced. Just remember to savor it all responsibly (remember—spitting is encouraged) along the route through the heart of the region.

Maison Ruinart Crayères

Ruinart caves

Ruinart is the first champagne house established in the region, and it is definitely worth paying a visit to. Maison Ruinart was established in 1729, the same year that the liquid delight was first bottled in the iconic bottle we know today. Down 125 feet into the boozy rabbit hole that is the Crayères, you’ll find the endless cellars and uncover the house’s history within its original walls. Ruinart is also a huge supporter of the arts, and the estate maintains an incredible collection, which includes a replica of Jean-François de Troy’s 1735 painting Le Déjeuner d’huîtres  in which a Ruinart champagne bottle is depicted.

Book Maison Ruinart Crayères tours directly on their website at Ruinart.com . Tour prices start at 75€ for adults and 35€ for children under 18.

Maison Ruinart , 4 rue des Crayères, Reims.

Maison Bollinger

Champagne Bollinger entryway

Aÿ, the quaint village that once housed none other than Lilly Bollinger, the Grande Dame of Champagne, now proudly preserves her legacy through her esteemed residence. Wander through the courtyard of the family home at 16 rue Jules Lobet in Aÿ, where barrels bask in the sun, just a stone’s throw away from the storeroom where the magic of champagne-making begins. Ascend two streets to Chaudes Terres, the winery, which is decked out with heat-regulated stainless-steel tanks. A staircase leads down to the cellars, where cuvées gracefully age in peaceful solitude. Sample some of the Bollinger special cuvées and immerse yourself in an intimate, family-run tradition. Excitingly, plans are underway for the construction of a small hotel and restaurant just down the street, ensuring guests have a cozy retreat after indulging in a few too many glasses.

Visit by appointment only. Download the app 1829 to book directly and/or inquire via email at [email protected] . A 2-hour tour and tasting of three wines has a price of 95€ per person.

Champagne Bollinger , 20 Boulevard Maréchal de Lattre, 51160 Aÿ.

Champagne Telmont

Leonardo Di Caprio on a champagne field.

Championing Mother Nature’s cause, Champagne Telmont stands as a remarkable house, established in 1912 and recently revived with a mission focused on regenerative viticulture. Notably, the house boasts support from none other than Leonardo DiCaprio himself. Located along the river in Damery, this chic and contemporary champagne house awaits. Embark on guided tours of the cellars arranged directly with the brand, savor drinks at the bar, or indulge in a delectable food and wine pairing menu at the communal table. Keep an eye out for the intricate details across the property that showcase Telmont’s commitment to green initiatives.

Visits are granted per request on champagne-telmont.com/pages/visit-form , where guests are invited to fill out a form.

Champagne Telmont , 1 Av. de Champagne, 51480 Damery.

GM Mumm underground champagne caves.

G.H.Mumm , lovingly dubbed Le Cordon Rouge (the red ribbon) because of the characteristic red stroke on each bottle, is worth the cost and is one of the most overlooked houses in Reims. Dive deep into the world of champagne at Mumm, where you’ll gain intimate insight into the craft. Descend into the quarries and stroll along Champagne’s equivalent of the Champs-Élysées, discovering the secrets behind its iconic bottles and savoring one of the smoothest champagne options available. Renowned for its exquisite design, Mumm has earned numerous accolades for its visually stunning bottles, which remain iconic to this day.

You can book a visit directly online at mumm.com/book-a-visit . Three tour experiences are available for 28€, 35€, and 50€ per person. Additional tasting and pairing options are available for 60€ and 75€.

G.H.Mumm , 34 rue du Champ de Mars, 51100 Reims.

Veuve Clicquot

A large brick building

Veuve Clicquot is a much-loved champagne named after Madame Clicquot, who took over the house at the age of 27 following her husband’s death in 1805. She was the first to offer a blended rosé champagne and approach her advertising strategy in an unconventional way. Veuve is often the star at many high-brow events; it’s even the de facto champagne of polo, as a frequent sponsor of matches. The champagne itself is elegant, lovely, and perfect for a summer soirée… or any occasion, for that matter.

Tours and tastings can be booked directly at veuveclicquot.com/es-int/visitus . Diverse experiences are available from 35€ to 250€ per person.

Veuve Clicquot , 1 Rue Albert Thomas, 51100 Reims.

Perching Bar

Perching Bar Champagne

Take a scenic detour through the Montagne de Reims nature park, where a 30-minute drive through rugged terrain leads you to a secluded forest path and a charming suspension bridge. This wobbly bridge serves as the sole entrance and exit to a unique treehouse wine bar. With its hanging armchairs and champagne buckets suspended from the ceiling, this spot offers the ideal setting to unwind and savor a glass of champagne while watching the sun set. It doesn’t get better than this!

Reserve in advance on perchinglife.com/produit/booking-the-perching-bar for a prepaid 21€ swing seat per guest.

Perching Bar , Forêt Brise Charette,  51380 Verzy.

Le Réfectoire Vranken-Pommery

Pommery Restaurant

Stop by the Vranken-Pommery estate, which features an ensemble of gothic towers nestled along the route to Reims. Join a tour of its historic champagne cellars, followed by a delightful dinner in the dining room, situated within the ancient refectory, which graciously extends its hours for guests of the estate. Indulge in the tantalizing risotto paired with leek fondue, accompanied by a glass of one of Pommery’s prized Bruts. Complete your meal with a decadent serving of profiteroles for a truly memorable culinary experience.

Book a table directly on TheFork.fr.

Le Réfectoire Vranken-Pommery , 5 Place du Général Gouraud Domaine Vranken, Pommery, 51100 Reims.

Trip Summary

Four day premium champagne tour.

Our Premium Champagne tour is the ultimate trip for Champagne lovers! Across two full days of transported tours with a specialist guide, you will be welcomed as the guests of some of the region’s most prestigious Champagne Houses. You will see what goes on behind the scenes at each of these famous estates, allowing a unique insight into how some of the world’s most revered Champagnes are made.

We recommend arriving in Reims on a Thursday, the trip will start in true style at the oldest Champagne House, Ruinart. As well as meeting your Grape Escapes guide and the rest of the group, you will be taken on a guided tour of the estate and stunning cellars, which are classified as a historical monument. The tour will be followed by a first tasting of your choice between Ruinart Blanc de Blancs and Ruinart rosé and their their flagship Prestige Cuvée Dom Ruinart, white or rosé. Pre-booked and pre-paid taxi transfers will be arranged to take you from your hotel to this visit.

Champagne Tours

On Friday morning, a chauffeured mini-coach and your Grape Escapes guide will collect you from your hotel and accompany you throughout the day on an unforgettable tour. The first visit of the day will take place at the estate of Champagne Bollinger in the village of Ay, for an exclusive tour of their cellars, and a tasting session of three Bollinger Champagnes.

You will then be taken out into the picturesque vineyards, where you will start your second tour of the day as the guests of a small, family-run Champagne House. As well as having a tour of the property with the estate’s charming and charismatic eighth generation owner and seeing first-hand the fascinating Champagne-making process from press to bottle, you will learn the Napoleonic art of Sabrage (the art of opening the Champagne bottle with a sword). Since you will each open a bottle you will then need to drink at least some of the Grand Cru Champagnes that have been opened.  A four course lunch will accompany the Champagne, served in the estate’s dining room. In the afternoon, you will visit a medium-sized co-operative, which produces excellent quality Champagnes from the Vallée de la Marne. Here, you will discover Champagne production on a more industrial scale, and your tour will conclude with a delicious Champagne and chocolate pairing experience.

Dom Perignon Tour ©C. Manquillet

The first stop on Saturday will be Champagne Veuve Clicquot. The Signature visit includes a full tour of the House, which was built over the historic chalk crayères extracted by the Romans, and of the cellars. The visit will conclude with a flute of the famous Yellow Label Champagne as well as a flute of the latest Veuve Clicquot vintage. The tour at Veuve Clicquot will be followed by a gourmet four course lunch in a highly-regarded restaurant.

Before heading to Epernay after lunch, we will take a short detour to the famous hilltop village of Hautvillers, the “cradle of Champagne.” As well as admiring the spectacular views across the vineyards, your guide will take you on a tour of the village, visiting places such as the Church where Dom Pérignon is buried. Finally, you will visit the largest and grandest Champagne house, Moët and Chandon, where you will have an exclusive Dom Pérignon tour. You will be visiting some of the oldest areas of the cellars which are seldom visited by the public and a tasting of Dom Pérignon will conclude the visit in an elegant reception room at the Moët mansion.

8 Top Champagne Houses in Reims, France

Wine lovers visiting Paris often choose to take a day trip to Reims for Champagne tasting. Getting there via train from Paris is actually very easy and quick. Then you’ll have the rest of the day to enjoy the bubbles at a few of the top Champagne houses in Reims.

Reims is the center of the Champagne world in France. You can visit world-famous estates in Reims and Epernay , such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger, or check out the smaller Champagne houses you may not have heard of.

veuve clicquot1

All you’ll need are a few advanced appointments, your walking shoes (or a quick Uber ride), and enough time to do it justice.

Below you’ll find all you need to know about setting up and enjoying Champagne tours and tasting in Reims.

How to Visit the Champagne Region

The best way to discover the region is by driving The Champagne Trail, which covers over 250 miles that wind through rolling hills, along vineyard covered valleys and past quaint little villages. All along the way you can stop to visit the growers and winemakers, to taste Champagne, and to learn as much as you like about the tradition.

There are two main cities in the Champagne region to visit, and the Champagne trail will take you between the two within just a 30 minute drive. In Reims, you can visit world-famous Champagne houses, such as Veuve Clicquot, Pommery, and Taittinger.

Champagne region in France

In Epernay, you can spend some time walking along the Avenue de Champagne, popping in at tasting rooms along the way. The easiest way to get to the Champagne region is by car from Paris. If you’re already visiting, you can rent a car in Paris and take a day or overnight trip to Champagne.

You can take the train from Paris to Reims, but it’s not very easy to get around to the Champagne houses without a car, and you’ll definitely need a car to visit the countryside or to go into Epernay. Below you’ll find all you need to know to plan a road trip in the Champagne region, for wine tours and tasting.

Self-Guided or Group/Private Wine Tour

The first consideration you’ll probably be making is whether you want to do a self-guided or a group/private guided wine tour. If you don’t have a designated driver, or don’t wish to spit the wine instead of drinking it, you will need to take a tour or hire a driver.

There are many to choose from. You can go on a group tour, which are plentiful, often including up to 10 people and are on a pre-planned route that you can’t decide on. Tours typically go to great wineries and there’s a lot of information given, many include lunch – plus you don’t have to take care of a single detail.

Below are two group tours we recommend:

  • Small Group Full Day Tour – Your go to three different Champagne houses, where you’ll try a variety of champagnes. There’s also an included three-course lunch along the way. (8 hours)  BOOK HERE
  • Reims Afternoon Tour to Epernay – Visit the UNESCO-listed Champagne Avenue in Epernay, the historic village of Hautvillers, and visit two Champagne houses for tastings. (4.5 hours)  BOOK HERE

Private Tour

If you don’t want to go along with a bunch of other people and you’d like to have some say in the schedule, then a private tour is the way to go. Here are two that we recommend (in case there’s not a lot of availability).

What’s Included:

  • First Visit – Explanation of the manufacturing process plus cave visit followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes.
  • Visit Hautvillers, the village where Dom Pérignon created Champagne.
  • 3-Course Restaurant Lunch
  • 2nd & 3rd Visits – A Grand Cru cellar and cave followed by a tasting of 3 Champagnes at each

Tour is 8 hours, 2 people minimum. $375/pp

What’s included:

  • Return transport from Reims in a private shuttle (Mercedes Class V).
  • English-speaking driver/guide, Champagne expert
  • Visit & tasting at 2 Champagne houses
  • Guided tour of Reims Cathedral
  • Lunch reservation (payment not included)

Tour is 7 hours, 2 people minimum $599/pp

Self-Guided Tour

I usually prefer to do self-guided touring when I visit wine regions because it gives me the greatest flexibility and I actually really like researching and choosing the wineries I want to go to.

While there is a little more work involved because you have to set up all the tours yourself, there are tools that will help make this super easy. The one I use is called  Rue des Vignerons . It’s a French website that makes booking wine appointments super easy.

The site has 450 wineries and distilleries, both family-owned and famous houses, that includes 1,500 bookable experiences, including tastings, tours, workshops, and meals. You can book online up to 30 minutes before and your appointment is confirmed instantly. This is the website I used to book all of my Bordeaux tasting appointments.

In our descriptions below, I will give you links directly to Rue des Vignerons for each winery so you can easily book it.

Another Champagne house with an impressive chalk cave that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, Taittinger will stun you from the moment you arrive at the impressive entrance gates.

Unfortunately, their main location is currently closed, but you can still visit Demeure des Comtes de Champagne in the center of Reims and try the tasting experience called “À la table de Thibaud IV”.

The experience is meant to showcase the life of Thibaud the fourth, King of Navarre, who was also a poet, while tasting the two signature cuvées of the House: the Brut Réserve and the Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs.

It’s a mix of audio and tasting and is offered in English and French. The price is 60€ and it lasts about 1 hour.

#5 Champagne Mumm

GH Mumm

The House Mumm started in 1827 in the historic birthplace of the Champagne, Reims. This almost bicentenary estate opens the doors of its cellars where about 25 million bottles rest peacefully in the cellars.

The Mumm family, whose lineage includes barons and knights, dates back to the 12th century. They were originally wine merchants based in Cologne, Germany, but expanded into France when they saw potential for the region and expansion of their business. They’ve been going strong ever since.

Today Mumm is spread across nearly 25 kilometers in the heart of Reims. Visitors can explore the long history of this cellar and learn about the process they’ve followed for centuries.

There are three visit types: The Cordon Rouge Mumm experience, the discovery experience, and the 100% Grand Cru experience. The visit will end at one of the most beautiful museum about champagne. Afterward, you will have the opportunity to taste their Champagnes.

#6 Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove

Champagne Charles de Cazanove has been in business since 1811, and its production is 3 million bottles per year. It can be quite interesting visiting a large house like this to learn the Champagne making process. The facility was built in 2019, so it’s very modern.

You can book a tasting only, or embark on one of their three tours, which takes you to their production facility and give you an explanation of the process, along with a demonstration in their eco-museum.

The tour will be followed by a comparative tasting of 3 non-vintage Champagnes (2 whites and 1 rosé) or you can add on a vintage tasting as well.

#7 Champagne Pol Couronne

Pol Couronne

Champagne Pol Couronne was started in 2015. This family-owned champagne house, located in the historic city of Reims, offers a private tour and tasting in their showroom, so you can get an intimate look into the meticulous craft of champagne-making.

The personalized tastings here are exceptional. Your palate is in for a treat. Each sip allows you to taste the terroir, skill, and passion that go into making each bottle. Champagne Pol Couronne offers a tasting of 3 Champagnes, or 3 Grand Cru Champagnes

They also offer a Champagne masterclass and a sabering experience, if you’re looking for something more unique.

#8 Veuve Clicquot

Veuve Clicquot Champagne

Location: 1 Place des Droits de l’Homme, 51100 Reims, France Hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm Phone:  +33 (0)3 26 89 53 90 Email: [email protected]

You’ve likely already heard of this Champagne brand, as it’s one of the most popular Champagnes being sold around the world. In case you’re thinking that means it’s not worth a visit to this Champagne house because it will be too touristy, we don’t think that’s an issue.

In fact, this was one of our favorite Champagne tours in Reims. The underground cellars of Veuve Clicquot might be one of the main reasons we love it here so much. The cellars are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage sight.

That’s not surprising when you learn that they’ve been making wine since 1772. In 1909, they bought these old underground quarrys to store their wine. There is some fascinating history in these caves, which you’ll learn all about during the tour.

After the tour of the cellar and facilities, you’ll have a chance to try the Champagne. There are a few different tickets you can purchase. Click here to see them all.

  • Discovery Tour – 26€:  45min tour followed by a single tasting of Yellow Label Brut 26€. This tour is available Tuesday to Saturday.
  • On the Footsteps of Madame Clicquot – 53€:  1 hr tour where you’ll learn all about Madame Clicquot, followed by a tasting of the Brut Yellow Label and prestige Cuvée La Grande Dame.
  • Veuve Clicquot & Rose Champagne – 40€: In 1818, Madame Clicquot was the first to make a rose champagne blend, which changed the landscape of Champagne for ever. Learn all about the Rose on this 45 min tour, followed by a tasting.

Other Champagne Houses Nearby

Not too far away from Reims, there are many more opportunities for Champagne tasting. If you’re going to be in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping by a few of these:

Pressoria is the brand new sensory interpretation center for champagne wines. Housed in the walls of a former Pommery pressing center in the commune of Aÿ, the immersive tour of this emblematic cultural site will help you rediscover champagne through your five senses.

Villa Signolle

A family-run business since 1802, they offer specialist champagnes for experts and amateurs alike. They do the harvesting, handling and winemaking of all their own grapes, from one of the best terroirs in the Champagne region. Their villa is on the Avenue de Champagne in Epernay. You can taste on their terrace or in the lounge, inside a house listed as a UNESCO heritage site.

Champagne Le Gallais

In 1927, Hachod Fringhian, the grandfather of Charlotte Morgain Le Gallais, obtained the Clos du Château de Boursault, which had long belonged to Madame Veuve Clicquot. Five generations later, Charlotte runs part of the estate: 7 parcels with their own characteristics, in the family vineyard, overlooking the Marne valley. The press, the cellars and the wine storehouses are also located in the clos, which guarantees a great freshness of the fruit at the time of its pressing and transformation.

How to Get from Paris to Reims

You can get to Reims from Paris by taking the TGV train. From anywhere in Paris, just get yourself to the East Railway Station. You can take the Paris subway to arrive at this station. This makes it very easy to visit Reims, no matter where in Europe you’re arriving from.

You don’t have to have tickets for the train in advance, but during busy times we do recommend buying them in advance to make sure you can get a seat. There have been times that the train has been full and we’ve had to take the next one. You can purchase tickets in advance on Trainline.com .

The train journey to Reims is only about 45 minutes. If you plan to go to Epernay – another of the nearby major Champagne cities – you can continue on from Reims on the TER train, which departs every 30 minutes and takes around 40 minutes to get there.

Descending into the Veuve Clicquot Chalk Caves

How to Get Around in Reims

One of the big questions that is often asked by tourists coming to Reims on a day trip from Paris is how to get around to the Champagne house. There are three convenient ways to get around. You can choose your method based on your own needs:

  • Walk: It’s actually quite easy to walk around Reims. The biggest hurtle is getting from the train station (or center of Reims) to the area where you find most of the Champagne houses. This is about a 2 mile walk (40 mins). If you don’t want to take this initial walk, you can take a quick Uber or taxi ride from the train station. We recommend starting at Veuve Clicquot, as it’s the furthest way from town (2 miles). To walk between any of the 5 Champagne houses mentioned, it will take you about 5 minutes or less.
  • Uber or Taxi: If you can’t or don’t want to walk, you can take an uber or taxi from the train station to any of the Champagne houses. Once you’re ready to go on to the next, you can call another Uber or taxi to take you there.
  • Rent a car: There is a convenient place near the train station to rent a car for the day. In fact, it’s just a few steps outside the door to the train station. It’ll cost around 40€ to rent a car for a day. We recommend using Expedia to book your rental car .

If you’re staying overnight in Reims, you’ll quickly learn that there isn’t a huge selection of hotels. We stayed at  Best Western Premier Hotel de la Paix . If you’re looking for a more luxury stay, try the  Chateau Les Crayeres .

⇒ Be sure to check out our list of the drinks you should try in France . There’s so much more to enjoy beyond the Champagne.

See the map below for directions to your Reims Champagne tours.

Once you’ve visited a few of these top Champagne tours in Reims, you’ll have a much better understanding of how Champagne is made and the history behind the industry and their unique stories.

It’s a great way to expand your knowledge of the craft and appreciate it even more than you probably already do. If you have a favorite Champagne house you want to share with our readers, leave us a comment!

Thank you so much for this perfect trip plan! Sooooo helpful 🙂

Glad you found it useful!

Thank you so much for your tips! Were there any bakeries nearby to grab a snack or light lunch between tastings? I seem to only be able to see these closer to the train yet am keen to do both Pommery & Veuve tastings (and will clearly needs some food between these!)

There are a few cheese shops and bakeries in town, but not right near the Champagne houses. I would recommend picking up some cheese, bread, pastries and taking them with you, so you don’t have to find something in between.

We’re planning an overnight in Reims next month – do you have any favorite places for dinner?

We really enjoyed L’Atelier and L’Alambic, which has a fun environment.

Are children (age 13) allowed on these tours? Thanks so much for the article! Very helpful.

Yes, they are allowed.

Do you have to book a tour or can you just show up and do a tasting? We are planning a day trip for Christmas Eve. We have a tour and tasting booked for Veuve Clicquot but wanted to be able to try one or two others without doing the tour.

For most places you need to book a tour. Not many just do tastings. However, if they do you would still likely need to make a reservation for Christmas Eve. Send them an email and ask what they offer. Veuve Clicquot is actually one that offers just tastings.

Great information, thank you for your detail! I’m planning a visit, but having trouble locating information for a tour at Laurent Perrier. Do you happen to know if they do tours?!

Hi Ashley, I think that tours may be closed to the public at this time. I couldn’t find any current tour information either.

We are considering doing some biking while visiting. Question…should we do Reims on foot one day and bike to Epernay day 2? Or, would a bike in the city be an asset or a hinderance? We wish to do lots of champagne tasting and plan on visiting both areas. We are only there two full days.

Melissa, I think a bike would be a great asset in both places. If only one day, I would bike around Reims and walk around Epernay, but you can definitely bike both. It’s about a 28-mile cycle between and easy roads.

Another nice address is Champagne Roger-Constant Lemaire, we tasted 4 our delicious champagnes and we plan to go back next year. They are situated in a village called Villers sous Châtillon between Reims and Epernay.

Fantastic! Thanks for the suggestion, Chris.

Appellations in Champagne

What you need to know before visiting Epernay

To enjoy a champagne tasting in Épernay, there are many choices of visits to cellars, vineyards or even champagne houses. As you walk along the magnificent Avenue de Champagne, you can visit the Mercier cellar . This champagne cellar will surprise you with its length of 18 kilometers, which you can discover by little train.

Yes, Epernay is worth a stop if you enjoy quaint wine-centric towns and want to experience authenticity and history in the Champagne region of France. Epernay has countless champagne houses, champagne tasting rooms, champagne tours, city tours, and more - all waiting for you to explore! Discover these memorable experiences by using Winalist’s search tool at the top of the page and entering the details of your desired wine experience in Epernay or other nearby cities.

Epernay is the perfect Champagne day trip from Paris. While you’re visiting Epernay, be sure to visit the famous Avenue de Champagne. You may also wish to vist Château Perrier, a museum in central Epernay. Of course, no Epernay trip would be complete without wine cellar tours in the city’s underground wine cellars. Find incredible experiences, such as full day tours to Epernay, by using Winalist’s wine experience search tool above.

For the best weather, you’ll want to visit Epernay during the months of May, June, July, August, and September. If you want to avoid crowds, perhaps try visiting this city during the cusp of its peak season, such as during the early spring or late fall months. Grape harvest period in Epernay (and the Champagne region in general) typically takes place during September and October. So, visiting Epernay during the fall months is the primary choice for many experienced visitors.

Best Champagne houses to visit

  • Wine weekends

There has never been a better time to visit Champagne. The region’s hotels, restaurants and visitor experiences are finally catching up to the reputation of the wines themselves.

There’s plenty to see around Reims and Épernay, both possible as day trips from Paris on the train, although it’s certainly worth getting out into the villages to escape the tour groups.

Top tips for visiting Champagne producers

Book in advance, preferably by at least two weeks, and make sure to call if you’re going to be more than a few minutes late. Bear in mind that the roads can be deceptively slow when the tractors are out during the summer months!

Lunch closures are sacred (including for car hire companies in Reims and Épernay), and don’t forget to check for when the numerous public holidays might fall.

Smaller producers are often more reluctant to take visitors during peak times of vineyard work (late June, July and around harvest), and all but the largest houses effectively shut down in August.

If you have the chance to do a little research into the house before you visit you’ll be rewarded. It’s always worth remembering that many smaller producers do not have dedicated staff for greeting guests and doing tours so are taking time out of busy days to share their work. Many smaller growers will not be able to sell you wine because their stocks are fully allocated, although Reims and Épernay have some excellent bottle shops where you might be able to find the wines. Despite this, fees for visits are generally reasonable compared to many other wine regions.

The top Champagne houses to visit:

Ruinart , reims.

best champagne houses

Seeing the Gallo-Roman crayères of Reims is essential. Many of the finest of these ancient chalk mines, repurposed for Champagne storage during the 18th and 19th centuries, lie under a hill to the south of the city, so take a taxi or public transport from the centre (or walk for about 40 minutes from the train station). Ruinart, one of the oldest houses in the region, is one of the most atmospheric to visit, with its beautifully maintained house and garden. Its carefully curated tours end with tastings of the house’s supremely elegant Chardonnay-focused cuvées.

Cellar tours £65/€75 per person, with a tasting of two cuvées. Champagne brunch £70/€80 per person, weekends only by reservation.

For a more accessible introduction to Champagne in Reims, head to Mumm’s historic house for a popular tour of its extensive cellars as well of some of its quirkier projects (such as the first bottle of Champagne in space). It’s worth booking on the Grand Cru Experience to make sure you get a taste of the fine and elegant RSRV range, showcasing some of this important house’s renewed efforts with wines from grand cru villages and lengthy lees ageing. During the summer months Mumm also offers a series of unique experiences at weekends, including the thought-provoking sensory tasting and Champagne and cheese pairing.

Pierre Gimonnet & Fils , Cuis

Champagne travel

The beautiful village of Cuis. Credit: www.champagne-gimonnet.com

Visiting independent growers is an essential part of any Champagne itinerary. Many of them work very small, localised parcels of vineyards, but at Gimmonet (one of the larger growers in the region) you can get to know a whole sub-region of Champagne: the northern Côte des Blancs, home of some of Champagne’s greatest Chardonnay. These are impeccably crisp, pure wines which present a vivid picture of the chalky slopes between Cuis and Oger. It’s best to book a visit in advance, although this is one of the rare growers that has published opening hours. After your visit, head down into the Côte des Blancs to find warm welcomes from producers such as Champagnes Lancelot-Pienne, Diebolt-Vallois, Delamotte, Franck Bonville, Doyard and Larmandier-Bernier.

Heading west from Épernay, the Marne Valley is home to some of Champagne’s most charming landscapes. Gently folding hills and woodland replace the uniform carpets of vineyards found around the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs, and the Pinot Meunier grape is king. There is none of Champagne’s famous chalk near the surface here – the Pinot Meunier grape thrives on the argile verte or green clay of the local area. With its impeccable vineyard work and an off-grid, sustainable winery full of unique innovations, Cedric Moussé’s family domaine in Cuisles is a top place to explore. You may even get to meet Moussé’s chickens or flock of vineyard sheep.

Most visitors to Champagne arrive from Paris or the north of France, and miss out on the Côte des Bar region, 90 minutes drive south of Reims. From the stunning medieval town of Troyes (and nearby Chardonnay village Montgueux) to the rolling landscapes which are more naturalistic than the north, with farmland, woodland and pasture all cohabiting, the Côte des Bar is a now a hotbed of independent Champagne producers, many of which have moved on from selling their Pinot Noir grapes to the larger houses. Family-run Drappier is the key Champagne house of the south, with a lineup of naturally expressive, gastronomic Champagnes that champion Pinot Noir on the Kimmeridgian limestone that’s also found in Chablis.

The cellars at Ayala. Credit: www.champagne-ayala.fr

Aÿ is one of Champagne’s most important grand cru villages, sitting opposite Épernay in the Grande Vallée de la Marne. Its Pinot Noir has been renowned for centuries, although the house of Ayala (sister house of better-known Aÿ stalwart Bollinger) works increasingly with Chardonnay to create attractively delicate, refreshing Champagnes. Sitting at the top of the village, the property boasts a terrace with superb views, so make sure to book a Prestige Visit (€40). Deeply atmospheric and beautifully lit cellars lie beneath the house, and the lineup of wines is increasingly impressive, especially the Blanc de Blancs and Perle d’Ayala.

champagne tour booking

Maison Gosset. Credit: www.champagne-gosset.com

Épernay’s grand Avenue de Champagne is the region’s most famous street, but aside from Moët & Chandon and Perrier-Jouët, it is not furnished with as many top-notch visitor experiences as one might expect. Gosset, one of Champagne’s oldest houses based in Aÿ, now owns a fine property in the south of the town, set in a two-hectare park. Book a guided tasting of the house’s invigoratingly dry, taut Champagnes together with a visit into the chalk cellars beneath the domaine. There’s also a bar and terrace for an informal drink. If you’re on a day trip without a car it’s about a 30 minute walk to the picturesque vineyards of Pierry and Moussy. Alternatively, head to Champagne Alfred Gratien in the town centre for a contrast in Champagne styles.
