The Colombian Government decided to introduce the requirement to complete the form in order to ensure the safe movement of international travelers as well as protect the country’s citizens during the still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Every traveler must remember to submit the Check-MIG form within 24 hours prior to every intended entry to Colombia. The form can be completed 1 hour before the flight start at the latest.

So you are all ready for the Colombian adventure, probably bought the tickets and go that travel insurance. You already know about the vaccination requirements and RT-PCR tests.

You check the Airline websites over and over. No one wants to be denied boarding, right?

That was what I and my Colombian wife were like when we planned to fly to Colombia a month ago. And barely 3 days before our travel, we came across something we had totally missed: Check Mig Colombia Form.

So you got your Colombia tourist visa, and you are planning your next trip to this beautiful country. Maybe you are planning to go and work in Colombia. It doesn’t matter.

And trust me when we say this, they actually chew out Colombians at immigration who forget to fill in the Check Mig Colombia. If you are a foreigner, you can be sure as hell that they will do much more than just chew you out.

The purpose of this article is to make sure that anyone traveling to Colombia knows what the Colombia Check-MIG is all about and how to get it without spending a penny.

So now that we know your journey to Colombia comes with the Chek Mig, let’s see why in the world, would you need this.

What Is Check Mig Colombia Exactly?

Since the Covid-19 outbreak, lots of countries have come up with ways to fasten immigration and make sure that international arrivals fulfill all the health requirements to enter the country.

For example, India has the Air Suvidha Form . Qatar has Ehteraz Pre Approval. We did both of them as well, in case you are interested to know.

Similarly, Colombia has Check Mig, which in Spanish is referred to as formulario check mig Colombia.

The Colombia Check-MIG form is nothing but a travel authorization document for international travelers.

It is a mandatory form that can be asked by the Airline before boarding and at immigration when entering the country. In our case, we were asked for it at both places.

Does Everyone Need to Fill in Check Mig Colombia?

Yes, everyone needs to do it.

It doesn’t matter whether you have the Covid-19 vaccine or RT-PCR test, whether you are a citizen or resident or whether you are a distant relative of Shakira. You have to complete the Colombia check Mig Form.

When to Apply Colombia CheckMig?

You need to fill out the Check Mig Colombia Form within 72 hours of boarding your flight. The latest you need the Check-MIG is 1 hour before your flight.

What are the Requirements for Colombia Check Mig?

The Check Mig Colombia Form requirements are pretty straightforward.

Unlike some other health declaration forms such as Air Suvidha for India or Ehteraz registration , you don’t need to upload any documents while filling in the Check Mig form.

You would need to have the following documents handy and submit the info from them.

• A valid passport
• Flight ticket
• Accommodation details
• A Colombia Visa if you have it
• Passport details for minor children if they travel with you

Do you need to do Check-Mig to leave Colombia?

No, speaking from first-hand experience, there is no need to submit the Check Mig Form when leaving Colombia. You only need to do it in order to enter Colombia.

We know that the form has the option to fill it out when you leave Colombia, but in practice, it is not followed. However, it is probably not a bad idea to do it in case you got time and in case they ask for it.

How to Complete Check Mig Colombia Form in 5 Steps?

Head over to the Colombia checkmig official website .

Click on the green notepad icon.

Step 1: Fill out Travel Info

Click on Aereo if you are flying in.

Terrestre means land border entry. Marítimo stands for seaport entry. Fluvial means entry by the river.

In Tipo de Registro , choose Ingreso a Colombia .

Ciudad de Ingreso al País stands for the border checkpoint through which you will be entering Colombia.

Fecha viaje stands for the date you will be traveling.

When you provide the Vuelo comercial , make sure to provide only the number part of your flight. When you do, it would automatically pull in the details of the flight and populate some of the relevant fields.

Here is a screenshot to help you out.

After this, you can fill in the Pais de procedencia , which is nothing but the country of origin.

After that, click on Continuar.

Step 2: Provide Personal Details

On the next page, you would need to provide personal details such as

• Passport number
• First name and Last name. In case you have more than one first name and last name, you would need to provide them.
• Date of birth
• Country of birth
• Whether you are entering Colombia with a visa

Once done, scroll down to fill in the visa details in case you are entering with a visa. You need to provide the purpose of your travel first, and the visa type would be populated automatically.

Following that, you need to fill in

• Visa number
• Country where the visa was issued
• Issue date of the visa
• Visa expiry date

In tne next section, for address, fill in

• Telephone number

Click on Continuar .

Step 3: Provide Details of Health Issues

On the next page of the Colombia Check Mig Form, you need to answer the following questions:

• Are you vaccinated against Covid-19?
• In the last 14 days, have you had any of these issues?( Fever, fatigue, cough, throat pain, breathing difficulties, feeling bad in general)
• Have you tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 14 days? If yes, then you shouldn’t travel.
• In the last 15 days, have you been in : South Africa, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola or Zambia?
• Are you registered with BIOMIG service?

After choosing your answers, click on Continuar .

Step 4: Are you Travelling with Children?

On the next page, you would be asked whether you are traveling with children or minors. In case you are, you can choose Si. It will open up a pop-up where you can fill in the personal details for your children.

After that, click on Continuar .

Step 5: Submit the form.

Finally, you would fill in the captcha and agree to the terms and conditions, and click on GUARDAR Y ENVIAR PREREGISTRO.

After this, you would be able to download the pre-registration report or Check Mig Colombia PDF for entering Colombia, referred to as Confirmación de Pre-Registro Migratorio in Spanish.

It would be a PDF that you can save on your phone or take a printout.

If you have not received an email within an hour, you can consult the Migración Colombia through a contact form . You can do the same in any error or if you notice Check Mig Colombia not working for some reason.

The Check-MIG form for Colombia is a requirement to enter Colombia. This must not be confused with a type of visa or entry permit. Whether you are visa-exempt for Colombia or need a Colombia visitor visa , work visa or any other permit, or you are a Colombian citizen, you need to fill this in.

Once you have submitted the form, you would receive the confirmation within 24 hours usually, although in some cases, it can take around 72 hours.

Hi Joe, I did not get your situation correctly. If you need to provide some kind of address, you could book a hostel or hotel, and provide the address and cancel it later or a friend’s address.

Hi Doug, You should be able to download the pre-registration report on https://apps.migracioncolombia.gov.co/pre-registro/public/preregistro.jsf by providing your details. That is all you need. The email could work at airports but the PDF is foolproof.

Ah, you could select Terrestre or Land. You can refer to the screenshot on step 1. Then you won’t need to provide flight info.

Hi Doug, Unfortunately, I don’t think there is any other way to download it. I believe the email that you have received will work out. You can take a print out of the same and explain them that you were not able to download it.

I notice it’s asks for your address in Colombia which clearly means hotel but it seems you can only input 1 option.

If i want to go to 3 different regions in 4 weeks which means at least 3 hotels, Do i just select the hotel i stay at longest? For instance if i use Bogota as a base point but i go to Nuqui for a week and Leticia for a few days. I can’t think of any logical other way to input this.

Thank you so much for taking the time for this simple step by step explanation on filling out the Check-Mig form. We did choose to use English, and we got to the last step, and stalled because we could not locate the box with the “check”mark to submit. Our flight was within hours of departure and realizing this form was a non negotiable requirement, we even made copies of every page we filled out, drove 40 miles to the airport, and presented them to the airlines check-in clerk, who refused to accept them. Now, we were in a real panic. Back home 40 miles to the computer, with time running out, and after several calls, we FINALLY got some Customer Service help and together we discovered the “check” mark to submit was located all by itself on the very far left side of the page, and barely visible because of it’s tiny size, NOT below the Capcha box. With one click, we got our email confirmation and just made the flight. Hope this helps anyone who has had the same problem. Thanks again.

Hi thank you very much spending time to prepare this detailed instruction. I will make my international transfer in Bogota to Rio de Jenario. I will arrive on Delta and Fly out on Avianca 3 hours after arrival. 2 separate airlines tickets. My questions are:

1. What do I fill in for an address in Bogota since I only there for 3 hrs for my other international flight. 2. Since 2 separate airlines tickets; I need to process through passport control, customs and security upon my entry and exit of the country. What about if I am not able to make my transfer after I submitted my exit Check-MiG, will that create a problem when I exit the country again the next day? Do I need to submit a new form on my departure again?

My trip is coming up in a week and I appreciate your comments. Thank you.

Hi Pat, I don’t think you need to do this since you are simply transiting and not entering Colombia. As long as you don’t pass through immigration, you would not need this even if you are flying with 2 different airlines. There is an area for transfer and you should be able to take your next flight without going through immigration. And 3 hours are probably not enough to do this anyways.

If you have any luggage to transfer from one airline to the other, see if you can do it without going through immigration. In most international airports, there is a way to do it.

In any case, to be on the safer side, you could fill out one form and have it with you. You don’t need it for departure.

Hi Julia, You should not need a Check-Mig if you are only transiting. Check-Mig is needed at the immigration, not before that. However, you could try and fill one in just in case, to be on the safer side.

Think it is better to use Smith Jr. In Colombia, a lot of people have 2 last names and 2 first names, and that is how they would do it.

Hey Faye, Have you tried resubmitting it? The problem is that if you have already submitted it, it would not allow you I believe. If it doesn’t work, then simply carry it with you and explain to them if they ask you about the mistake. In my experience, they can cut you some slack depending on the day.

Did your Colombian wife fill out the form with her US or Colombian passport info. I know I have to have my Colombian passport to enter the country but I also have to buy my plane ticket with my name in the US because I need the US passport to leave the country. I had issues last year because I had a different name on my plane ticket and it was not matching the Colombian passport info when I filled out the form. I can’t remember now what I’m supposed to fill that out with 😞

My wife only has a Colombian passport. 🙂 In any case, I believe you have to enter with a Colombian passport if you have one. So your name should be the same in both places.

Hey MD, No, you can not fill it out if you are flying 3 days after the time when you are filling out the form. For example, if you are flying on the 9th, you can try to fill it put on the 6th.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to post this very helpful information, I sure could have used this a couple of years ago when I missed my flight because the attendant told that I have to have this form done 2 hours before my flight and I ended up having to take another flight and fight with the airline and Expidia to try to get my money back- I ended up having my credit card assist with this, otherwise I would have been out 4K because ia was traveling with my son. May question today is about a fee the I was charged when doing the Check-mig for my mother a month ago, at some point in the application I asked to pay $90 US to process the application, there were other people at the airport who had the same experience- is this legit? I did receive a confirmation which I then showed the attendant and my mother got on the plane, but a fee for this process? US in Canada?

Hi Pilar, Sorry to hear about your experience. Sometimes the Airline staff can be too difficult. Did you have to pay the fees when doing the Check Mig? Do you by any chance have a receipt or screenshot of the payment that you can email to [email protected] ?

This is totally free, so I find it strange. A screenshot would help a lot.

Question: if a cruise passenger (US citizen) goes to Colombia by cruise ship can he get the necessary entry stamp upon arrival in Cartagena or other Colombian port so that he can stay up to the three month limit and/or renew his visa for another three months before return to the US or another country?

The cruise agencies are vague; some say you can disembark; others say not. Some say you must buy the nonrefundable ticket before they can answer the question. This is a visit to a Colombian friend that is not just for pleasure and fun but important, humanitarian-wise. Flying is out of the question, at least upon arriving there.

A return ticket, Chekc Mig Colombia and US passport would all be in his possession. Why is it so hard to get an answer to this question from travel agencies and US and Colombian embassies? Thank you for your help and knowledge if available. (Would it be better to get a tourist visa to Colombia before leaving the US?)

Hi Dale, The first thing that you need to confirm is whether the cruise has a stop in Cartagena or any other port in Colombia or not. Then the next thing you have to confirm with them is whether he will be allowed to end his journey there and leave the cruise permanently. Some of them would not agree with that. Finally, the process of visa stamping. Whether there is an immigration post that can stamp his passport when he embarks? The cruise company can answer this as well. This is the most important part.

As a US citizen, he does not need a visa for tourism. So applying for that is out of question.

Thank you! I’m so thankful I found your article. I tried numerous times, and kept getting “It is not possible to send the Pre-Registration, you already have a record with the same travel data, verify the information”. I just thought it was weird because the form never went through. Plus, I never got an email confirmation. I was frustrated, stressed and getting nervous because I leave within 24 hours. Then, I found your article, and just like you advised, I used the Spanish form. The questions were different from the ones you have in Step 3: Provide Details of Health Issues, though. But since I did the English form so many times, I already knew them by heart! The Spanish form had only one little glitch, but after it was fixed, it just breezed through. I couldn’t believe my eyes. hi there, im confused about the time line. some places i see i can fill check mig out 72 hours before my departure and other places say no more than 24 hours before my arrival or no more than 24 hours before my departure. this doesn’t make sense to me if it can take up to 72 hours to process and i have to have my proof of conformation before i get on the plane??

Hi Gerald, Yes, it is 72 hours before departure. The form itself would not allow you to do it before that. And when you provide your details you can see the date range which allows you to fill in before you do the final submission.

The Mig in part two asks for your nationality and place of birth The origin question in part 1 relates to your journey. So if you flew from panama to Colombia via Germany then the origin is Germany. It’s a means of identifying where you have traveled from. Where your journey began.

PCR test is not required for entering Colombia but please confirm with the Airline. It’s always the Airlines that seem to be the bad guys, probably a lot more than the immigration officers.

Well, from the stories that I have heard, you should be just fine I believe. Since you have already done it, let it be that way. They might ask a few questions and you could always reason that since your flight would land in Bogota first, that is your port of entry.

I will like to visit Colombia for tourism purposes and needed some clarification. I hold an Indian passport. I have visited Colombia few times in the past and showed United States H1B visa stamp during entry at the Medellin airport’s immigration check and entry was smooth. My H1B visa stamp is now expired, as I am in the final stages of my US green card process. US Immigration services has provided me a green card based Employment Authorization Document (EAD) and Advance Parole (AP) card that is a valid temporary residence permit and allows me to freely exit and enter the US i.e. the green card based EAD+AP card is a valid card for 180+ days beyond my intended travel to Colombia, and I have used it to travel to India and reenter US .

In this document, I see that the requirement for Indian passport holder is to have a “US residence permit” OR a visa. https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/sites/default/files/FOTOS2020/5488%20del%2022%20de%20julio%20de%202022_0.pdf#page=5 It doesn’t say a US Permanent Residence permit. So, I am assuming that the EAD/AP combo card should be a valid temporary residence permit as that’s how USCIS treats it

My question: Can I travel to Colombia and show my green card application based EAD + AP card as the valid residence permit and be allowed to enter Colombia for tourism purposes? And hence not apply for Colombia visa. I am planning to travel in the next 4-5 days, and hence don’t have the needed time to apply for a consulate at the visa.

Deb: Confused on the timing of the completion of the MIG. While I’m leaving on a Thursday night from the U.S. and will be visiting Colombia, I’m going to be disembarking in Panama City for 3 days before continuing on to Medellin Colombia on Monday. Therefore, it appears Thursday would be too soon to complete my MIG. Do I need to wait until I’m in Panama to complete the MIG given Thursday is outside of the 72 period?

We depart from Denver, and fly to Panama City, (arriving the next morning) and have a 2 hour layover, and then our second flight to Bogota that morning – with a different flight number. (All on Copa airlines) Do I provide the flight number/date of the Denver flight to Panama City, or the Panama City flight to Bogota? We have US passports.

There has been evidence of chikungunya virus transmission in Colombia within the last 5 years. Chikungunya vaccination may be considered for the following travelers:

• People aged 65 years or older, especially those with underlying medical conditions, who may spend at least 2 weeks (cumulative time) in indoor or outdoor areas where mosquitoes are present in Colombia, OR
• People planning to stay in Colombia for a cumulative period of 6 months or more

Chikungunya - CDC Yellow Book

Hepatitis A

Recommended for unvaccinated travelers one year old or older going to Colombia.

Infants 6 to 11 months old should also be vaccinated against Hepatitis A. The dose does not count toward the routine 2-dose series.

Travelers allergic to a vaccine component or who are younger than 6 months should receive a single dose of immune globulin, which provides effective protection for up to 2 months depending on dosage given.

Unvaccinated travelers who are over 40 years old, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions planning to depart to a risk area in less than 2 weeks should get the initial dose of vaccine and at the same appointment receive immune globulin.

CDC recommends that travelers going to certain areas of Colombia take prescription medicine to prevent malaria. Depending on the medicine you take, you will need to start taking this medicine multiple days before your trip, as well as during and after your trip. Cases of measles are on the rise worldwide. Travelers are at risk of measles if they have not been fully vaccinated at least two weeks prior to departure, or have not had measles in the past, and travel internationally to areas where measles is spreading.

All international travelers should be fully vaccinated against measles with the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, including an early dose for infants 6–11 months, according to  CDC’s measles vaccination recommendations for international travel .

Dogs infected with rabies are sometimes found in Colombia.

Rabies is also present in bats.

If rabies exposures occur while in Colombia, rabies vaccines are typically available throughout most of the country.

Rabies pre-exposure vaccination considerations include whether travelers 1) will be performing occupational or recreational activities that increase risk for exposure to potentially rabid animals and 2) might have difficulty getting prompt access to safe post-exposure prophylaxis.

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Colombia. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

• Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
• Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
• Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
• Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
• Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

• FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
• Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
• Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
• 2-undecanone
• Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

• Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
• Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Colombia include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

• Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
• Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
• Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
• If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
• Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
• Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
• Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

• Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
• Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
• Do not dive into shallow water.
• Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
• Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
• To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that can be spread in fresh water, is found in Colombia. Avoid swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water, such as lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

• Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.

• Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.

Malaria is a risk in some parts of Colombia. If you are going to a risk area, fill your malaria prescription before you leave, and take enough with you for the entire length of your trip. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking the pills; some need to be started before you leave.

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

• Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
• Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
• Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

• Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
• Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
• Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
• Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)

• Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

• Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.

• Arrange payment before departing.

• Wear a seatbelt at all times.
• Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
• When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
• Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Colombia may be poor.
• Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
• Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
• If you choose to drive a vehicle in Colombia, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.

Adding to the appeal, visa requirements for Colombia are fairly straightforward, with visa-free travel available for a large number of countries, plus a simple online visa application process for those who need one.

As anywhere, requirements can change without warning, so it’s always important to double-check the latest guidance from your local Colombian embassy , but here are the most important things you need to know about visas for Colombia.

What are the entry requirements for Colombia?

Travelers from 102 countries and territories, including the USA, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and Australia, and most countries in the EU and EEA, can enter Colombia visa-free as tourists. Upon arrival, visitors from countries on the approved list receive a passport stamp granting a stay of up to 90 days.

There are a few conditions. You'll need a minimum of six months left on your passport before it expires and you may be asked to show proof of an onward ticket for travel out of Colombia at the end of your stay. Officials may also request evidence of a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you’re entering from another South American country.

You must complete the Check-Mig immigration form on the Migración Colombia website; this process was introduced during the pandemic and remains as a requirement to enter the country. It's available in English, Spanish and French, and the form must be filled out between 72 hours and one hour before departure for Colombia.

When leaving Colombia, there's a chance you may be charged an exit tax of US$35 at the airport. This tax is normally included in the cost of flight tickets, but you should confirm this when checking in for your inbound flight. 

Which countries need a visa for Colombia?

Citizens of most nations in Africa, Asia and the Middle East (plus some other countries) are not eligible for visa-free access and must apply in advance for a visitor visa to enter the country. There's a full list of countries and territories whose citizens require a visa on Colombia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website. 

Applications for tourist visas should be filed online and the cost varies depending upon your nationality and the country where you are located when applying. Expect to pay around US$82 for the visa, which is usually valid for a stay of up to 180 days. Make sure you have all of your documents ready before you begin the application process online – the website times out after 30 minutes, deleting any progress you’ve made up until that point. 

Citizens of Cambodia, China, India, Macau, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam can enter Colombia visa-free for up to 90 days if they have an existing short-stay visa or residency permit issued by the USA or any Schengen Area country. This document must be valid for at least 180 days beyond the date of your arrival in Colombia.

Can I extend my Colombian tourist visa?

If you’re a citizen of a country that has visa-free access to Colombia, you can extend your stay by an additional 90 days by applying for an extension online (in Spanish) or at the offices of Migracíon Colombia (including in  Bogotá , Medellín , Cali and Cartagena ). If you have a 180-day visa, this cannot be extended, as this is already the maximum stay allowed.

The process of extending your entry stamp must be completed at least two weeks before your existing stamp expires in case of any processing delays. You will need to provide photocopies of the information page of your passport and your Colombian entry stamp, and proof of a booking for onward travel within the next 90 days to support your application.

Extending your tourist stamp allows you to spend a maximum of 180 days in total in Colombia in any 12-month period. Extending costs US$27 for most nationalities, but it’s free for citizens from a Schengen Area country. 

Visa requirements for working in Colombia

A temporary worker’s visa, known as a migrant (M) visa or M-5 is available for travelers who can prove they have a job lined up with a Colombian employer. This class of visa has a duration of up to three years, and your Colombian employer will need to provide several financial documents to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to support the process, including bank statements and proof of tax payments.

You can apply for this class of visa from abroad or while you are in the country on a tourist visit, making it easier to attend interviews with a local employer. While you can leave and enter the country on a working visa, it will expire if you leave Colombia for longer than six consecutive months.

It's not a cheap process, however. Expect to pay US$52 for the application process, and a further US$230 once it has been approved. You can apply online , although you may be required to show documents in person at your local consulate or embassy – there's a full list on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website .

If your application is successful, you’ll receive an electronic visa via email, which can be shown to border officials upon arrival and exit from Colombia. There is no legal requirement to have the visa printed in your passport unless you’re staying in Colombia for more than three months; however, it’s highly recommended that you get a copy printed at your local consulate as there’s always the possibility that passport officials may demand to see a physical copy.

That said, keep all cash somewhere safe and hard to get to. Pickpocketing is prevalent here, as well as violent assault in poorer areas.

The temperature is also known to sometimes rise from as low as 4 degrees Celsius to 19 degrees Celsius on some days. With such diverse and unpredictable weather, one has to come prepared to face any type of weather in this country.

Never Talk About Drugs, Especially Cocaine

One important thing to always avoid doing in Colombia is talking about drugs. Drug production and trafficking continue to increase in this country, and drug is always accompanied by crime. In 2021, the production of coca leaves which is the main ingredient for cocaine, increased drastically. Haggle Before Buying Something

To avoid getting ripped by sellers (who always know a gringo when they see one), employ the skill of bargaining when purchasing something. Buying something $5 less than the initial asking price is not uncommon.

Altitude Sickness Is Real In Colombia

In Colombia, like many parts of South America, high altitude is something that one often has to worry about as the country is filled with many mountains. Bogota, the country’s capital, rises to an elevation of 8,660 feet , making it one of the highest cities in the world. One important tip to help deal with altitude sickness in Colombia is to always stay hydrated when heading to places with high altitudes. Adventurers seeking to go rock climbing or visit higher places can also include other substances like vitamins and minerals to cushion the effects of the high altitudes. Alcohol, caffeine, and other dehydrating substances should also be avoided when heading to higher elevations.

It’s Not Mandatory To Tip

In hotels, bars, restaurants, and other service centers around Colombia, tipping is not usually mandatory or expected, unlike in other countries. Nicer restaurants usually include a 10% service charge automatically on the bill. Of course, if the service was exceptional, it does not hurt to give the service person some extra change. Tipping taxi drivers is also not a thing as passengers are only required to pay the amount on the meter; still, the extra tip is always appreciated. In most cases, tips cost between 2,000 and 5,000 Columbian Pesos, equivalent to a dollar. That's like nothing to most tourists, but the locals in Colombia appreciate it so much.

Be Careful On The Roads

The traffic in Colombia can be chaotic. Drivers here are usually impatient and aggressive and won’t stop for anybody. To avoid getting into a dangerous situation on the road, it is important to be careful on the roads. With dangerous roads and long traffic jams, it will be better to avoid driving in Colombia and just stick to using taxis and buses.

Online dating applications

There has been an increase of deaths related to online dating applications used by criminals to identify and lure foreigners looking to meet local people. On a date, the victim is drugged with scopolamine or another incapacitating drug, potentially leading to an overdose and becoming a victim of robbery and express kidnapping.

Incidents occur most frequently in larger cities, including but not limited to:

If you are in Colombia:

• be cautious if using online dating apps
• avoid meetings in isolated locations
• don’t bring new acquaintances to your accommodations
• inform a family member or friend of your plans, including details of with whom and where your date is

Movement restrictions for minors in Medellin

On January 31, 2024, local authorities issued restrictions on the movements of minors under the age of 18 in certain areas of Medellin where they are at a high risk for sexual exploitation. These restrictions will remain in place until July 31, 2024. Minors are not allowed in certain areas every day between 7 pm and 5 am unless they are accompanied by their parents or legal guardians and carry proper identification.

These areas include:

• El Poblado, including Parque Lleras
• parts of Corredor vial de la 33
• La Candelaria, including:
• Plaza de Botero
• Parroquia de la Veracruz
• parts of Corredor de la 70

If you are travelling with a minor in Medellin:

• ensure that they carry proper identification and a photocopy of their passport
• follow the instructions of local authorities

Crime rates are high throughout the country, particularly in the main cities. In some cases, extreme violence leading to death has occurred.

Violent crime

Muggings and assaults occur even in the safer areas of Colombia’s cities. These incidents can turn violent. Firearms and other weapons are common in Colombia. Armed robberies are frequent and may occur in:

• restaurants
• shopping malls

Criminals won’t hesitate to use weapons on victims who refuse to co-operate.

• Avoid walking alone in isolated or deserted areas
• Avoid travelling alone after dark
• Dress down and avoid wearing jewellery or watches
• Keep cell phones, cameras and other electronic equipment out of sight
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
• Use ATMs inside banks, shopping malls and other public locations during business hours only
• If you're robbed, hand over cash, electronic devices and valuables without resistance

Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing and purse and cell phone snatching, is common in all parts of the country. Drive-by snatching by thieves on motorcycles occurs regularly. They occur in both impoverished and wealthier parts of the country.

• Ensure that your belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
• Stay in reputable accommodations with good security
• Keep windows and doors locked at all times

Dating applications

Online dating applications are often used by criminals to identify and lure foreigners travelling alone and looking to meet local people. Victims often build virtual relationships and attend multiple dates with the same person, often in public places. Once trust is established, the victim is drugged with scopolamine, or another incapacitating drug, and is robbed and/or kidnapped. Drugging of victims has led to overdose and death.

Scopolamine and other incapacitating drugs

Scopolamine is a drug that temporarily incapacitates victims leaving them disoriented and unable to make clear decisions for 24 hours or more. Once the victim is incapacitated, they are vulnerable to crime, including:

• express-kidnapping

Overdoes have also been reported.

Criminals often target those travelling alone and may put drugs into a variety of items, including: 

• food and drinks
• hand sanitizer
• women’s make-up

Incidents are most likely to occur:

• in nightclubs
• in bars and restaurants
• on public transportation, including taxis
• on the street

Criminals often work in teams, with women easing the victim into a false sense of security. Incidents occur most frequently in larger cities, including but not limited to:

• never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers
• be wary of accepting snacks, beverages, gum, cigarettes or anything else from new acquaintances or someone in the street

Vulnerable neighborhoods

Vulnerable neighborhoods (commonly known as “comunas”), are characterized by informal housing developments, crowded quarters, poorer conditions, and/or irregular construction.

Gang-related violence and organized crime are prevalent in these areas and police assistance is very limited.

Avoid renting accommodations in vulnerable neighborhoods, and travelling to these areas, even on a guided tour.

There is a risk of kidnapping for ransom in Colombia.

Armed groups may target foreigners in all parts of the country, especially those who work for oil and mining companies. Business travellers and Canadian companies establishing operations in Colombia should take enhanced security measures to protect both personnel and company assets.

Choose living accommodations that have significant security measures in place and modern office facilities.

Express kidnappings

Express kidnappings are frequent and often occur in affluent areas, as well as in tourist areas. Criminals kidnap the victim from the street or a taxi and force the person to withdraw funds from an ATM. The victim is sometimes held overnight so that a second withdrawal can be made the next day.

• Avoid hailing taxis on the street
• If you're threatened by armed criminals, stay calm and don’t resist

There is a threat of domestic terrorism. Terrorist groups are active in some parts of the country, often using explosives during periodic attacks.

Further attacks are likely. Targets could include:

• government buildings, including schools
• places of worship
• military and police stations and vehicles
• airports and other transportation hubs and networks
• infrastructure, including roads and energy facilities
• public areas such as tourist attractions, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places. Be particularly vigilant during:

• civic holidays
• public celebrations
• major political events, such as elections

Terrorists may use such occasions to mount attacks.

Illegal armed groups

Illegal armed groups pose a major risk to travellers. These groups carry out violent attacks, such as bombings, and finance themselves through extortions and kidnappings. Attacks often result in casualties.

• Remain on well-travelled roads and paths when visiting remote locations
• Be aware of your surroundings at all times

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs frequently. Card overcharging also happens, especially in popular tourist areas, where scammers target tourists by charging them elevated prices for services, food and drink. Ask for a printed price list before ordering.

When using debit or credit card:

• don’t accept assistance from strangers
• pay careful attention when others are handling your cards
• use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
• avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
• cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
• check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Fraudulent police officers

Individuals posing as police officers have approached foreigners to verify their documents or foreign currency with the intent to rob them.

If you face this situation:

• don’t hand over your money or documents unless you feel threatened
• request to provide your documents or currency at the nearest police station, your hotel or another public place

Overseas fraud

Demonstrations

Demonstrations and strikes take place regularly throughout Colombia, especially in large cities.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

• Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
• Follow the instructions of local authorities
• Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Ayahuasca ceremonies

Spiritual cleansing and ayahuasca ceremonies, offered by shamans and other individuals, have led to serious illness, injury, assault and even the deaths of several tourists.

Ceremonies involve consuming substances that can cause medical complications and severely impair cognitive and physical abilities. They often take place in remote areas with no access to medical or mental health facilities or resources. Often, there is no access to communications with local authorities or emergency services. Facilities generally lack basic first aid or emergency plans to help those suffering from physical or psychological illness during these ceremonies.

Ayahuasca ceremonies are not regulated and individuals offering them are not licensed. There is no way to assess the safety of any of the services, the operators or the shamans.

Avoid participating in spiritual cleansing or ayahuasca ceremonies.

Women’s safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment or verbal abuse.

Incidents of attacks and sexual assault, including rape, have been reported throughout the country, particularly in tourist areas.

• Always remain vigilant
• Avoid walking alone at night
• Keep your hotel doors and windows locked
• Do not accept offers of transportation from strangers

If you are a victim of a sexual assault or other crime, you may report it immediately to the nearest Canadian office.

Advice for women travellers

Water safety

Some beaches are unsupervised.  Many beaches do not have warning flags to alert of unsafe conditions. Lifeguard services do not always meet Canadian standards.  Tidal changes can cause powerful currents, and riptides are common.

• Respect the areas reserved for swimming
• Monitor weather conditions
• Avoid beaches and coastal areas if the weather forecast is poor
• Do not dive in unfamiliar waters as hidden rocks or shallow water can cause serious injury or death
• Consult residents and tour operators for information on possible hazards and safe swimming areas

Recreational boating

Due to unlicensed tour boats not meeting safety standards, boating accidents have occurred, including in:

• San Andrés
• Santa Marta

If you are planning to go boating:

• choose a reputable boating company
• ensure that your tour operator follows up-to-date safety regulations
• don’t board vessels that appear overloaded or unseaworthy

Water safety abroad

Adventure tourism

Outdoor activities can be dangerous if unprepared, such as:

• white water rafting
• scuba diving
• snorkelling
• mountain biking

If you intend to participate in adventure tourism activities: 

• share your itinerary with a friend or family member if hiking alone
• obtain detailed information on your activity and on the environment in which you will be setting out   
• buy travel insurance that covers incidents related to this type of recreational activity  
• monitor weather conditions and other possible hazards
• ensure that you have proper equipment and bring sufficient water

Road safety

Road conditions and road safety can vary greatly throughout the country, due to:

• road signs that are difficult to see or non-existent
• lack of lighting and guard rails
• livestock on the roadside in rural areas
• pedestrians walking on the street

Road conditions

Driving conditions may be particularly hazardous during the rainy seasons, from April to May and from October to November.

Road habits

Drivers are extremely aggressive and reckless. They often speed and are frequently distracted and ignore traffic controls.

Motorcycles are common and are often involved in traffic accidents.

Pedestrians don’t have the right of way, including at stop signs.

When travelling by car in Colombia:

• avoid driving at night
• avoid driving on secondary roads as they are often targeted by criminals
• don’t pick up hitchhikers
• keep your doors locked and windows closed at all times
• always place all belongings under your seat
• carry a cell phone
• park your car in a guarded parking lot when in a city

Local authorities may deny you entry to certain areas due to emerging security threats. Military checkpoints outside cities are common.

Strikes occur often in Colombia and associated roadblocks on major transit routes may cause significant travel disruptions.

Unauthorized roadblocks and bandits also pose a threat.

If you’re planning to travel by land in Colombia:

• dial 767 from your cell phone to receive advice on current road closures from the Colombian Highway Police information line (in Spanish)
• never hitchhike
• consult local media

Public transportation

You should avoid public transportation.

Buses and coaches

City and rural buses are frequent targets for theft. Incidents of passengers being drugged and robbed have occurred.

• Don’t accept snacks, beverages, gum, or cigarettes from new acquaintances
• Avoid storing bags in the overhead compartment or under your seat  

Express kidnappings and assaults often occur in unlicensed taxis.

• Only use reputable taxi companies through establishments such as hotels or a ride-sharing app

If you have no choice but to hail a taxi on the street:

• avoid taxis without licence plates
• never enter a taxi if it already has a passenger
• note the licence plate number and name of the driver when you travel and immediately communicate this information to family or friends

El Dorado International Airport in Bogota allows only authorized taxis to pick up passengers at its terminals. 

Arrange pickup in advance with your travel agency or hotel.

Entry restrictions at land and river borders with Ecuador

On January 11, 2024, the Government of Ecuador announced new entry restrictions in response to the ongoing state of internal armed conflict.

All foreigners entering Ecuador at crossing points with land or rivers borders with Colombia will need to present a criminal records check from their country of origin or residence. T he original criminal record check and the Spanish translation must be apostilled and cover the past five years. Minors travelling with their family members will generally be exempt.

If you cannot provide a criminal record check, the Ecuadorian Migration System will check to verify that you don’t have previous convictions.

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

You must complete a free electronic immigration form (Check-Mig) within 72 hours to 1 hour before:

• boarding a flight to or from Colombia
• entering into Colombia via land, maritime or river crossings 

You will need the following information to complete the form:

• a valid passport
• a valid email address
• the address where you will be staying in Colombia
• a phone number

As of November 14, 2023, you must pay an entry fee equivalent to $85 CAD in Colombian Pesos upon arrival in Colombia. The payment must be made by credit card only upon entering the country during the immigration control process. There could be significant delays in making the payment, which could disrupt your travel plans.

You don't have to pay this entry fee if:

• your destination is the archipelago of San Andres, Providencia and Santa Catalina
• you have a valid Colombian visa
• you are less than 14 years of age or more than 79 years old
• you are a member of the crew of international transport means (conditions apply)

Failure to pay the entry fee could prohibit you from entering the country.

Entry stamp

You must obtain an entry stamp in your passport when you enter Colombia by land.

You may be fined if you fail to obtain an entry stamp

Length of stay for tourists

The immigration officer will determine the permitted length of your stay when you enter Colombia. As a tourist, you may be granted a stay up to 90 days.

You will be fined if you overstay the specified period on your entry stamp. You may apply for a stay extension at the nearest Colombian migration office. You may extend your stay up to a maximum of 180 days per calendar year. The final decision remains with the immigration authority.

Customs officials may ask you to show them a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina

If you plan to visit the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, you must purchase a tourist card at the airport prior to  your arrival.

You must also show this card before you depart the island.

Drug screening

Colombia employs strict screening measures at its international airports to detect narcotics smuggling.

Customs officials may:

• search you and your luggage
• fingerprint you
• require you to undergo an X-ray inspection upon arrival or departure

Most airport customs inspectors speak only Spanish.

Dual citizenship

Canadian citizens who also hold Colombian citizenship must enter and exit Colombia using the following documents:

• Colombian passport
• Colombian identification card

Although local immigration authorities will allow dual citizens to enter without Colombian documents, they will stamp their foreign passport indicating that they must leave using Colombian documents.

Whether travelling to a domestic or international destination, underage Canadian-Colombian dual citizens must present:

If under 18 and travelling alone or accompanied by a single parent

• an authorization to travel from both parents, written in Spanish and notarized at a local notary public or at a Colombian embassy or consulate abroad; and
• a Colombian birth certificate, notarized at a local notary public, or a long-form Canadian birth certificate and its official Spanish translation

If one of the parents does not comply with child support obligations, his/her authorization can be waived. For this, the parent must be registered at the Colombian Child Support Debtors (REDAM).

If under 18 and travelling with both parents

• a Colombian birth certificate notarized at a local notary public; or
• a long-form Canadian birth certificate showing the parents' names, and its official Spanish translation.

This section contains information on possible health risks and restrictions regularly found or ongoing in the destination. Follow this advice to lower your risk of becoming ill while travelling. Not all risks are listed below.

Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic preferably 6 weeks before you travel to get personalized health advice and recommendations.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary. 

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

• There is a risk of yellow fever in this country.

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

  Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

 The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.  

 The flu occurs worldwide. 

•  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
•  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
•  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round. 

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Malaria  is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and/or during a certain time of year in this destination. 

Antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year you are travelling. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows. • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.    If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living. 

In this destination, rabies is commonly carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by a dog or other animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. In this destination, rabies treatment may be limited or may not be available, therefore you may need to return to Canada for treatment.  

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals). 

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

• Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
• Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs. 

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.  

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

• Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
• Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
• Minimize exposure to insects
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Cutaneous and mucosal   leishmaniasis   causes skin sores and ulcers. It is caused by a parasite spread through the bite of a female sandfly.

Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from sandfly bites, which typically occur after sunset in rural and forested areas and in some urban centres. There is no vaccine or medication to protect against leishmaniasis.

• In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
• Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
• The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
• Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
• Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country. 

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

• Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
• Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease)   is a risk in this country. It is caused by a parasite spread by infected triatomine bugs. The infection can be inactive for decades, but humans can eventually develop complications causing disability and even death.

Risk is generally low for most travellers. Protect yourself from triatomine bugs, which are active at night, by using mosquito nets if staying in poorly-constructed housing. There is no vaccine available for Chagas disease.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

•   washing your hands often
• avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
• avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness 

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.  

Medical services and facilities

Good health care is limited but is available in major cities. Quality of care varies greatly throughout the country.

Private clinics offer emergency services. They typically require advance payment in cash or by credit card.

If you don’t have proof of travel insurance, you may be transferred to a public hospital, where medical care may not meet Canadian standards.

Doctors mostly speak Spanish.

Emergency and ambulance services are widely available. Response times may be slow in rural areas. 

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Medical tourism

Canadian citizens have died or had serious health complications following cosmetic or other elective surgeries in Colombia. 

Before leaving for medical travel, you should do your research, especially on:

• the health and financial risks
• the medical facility
• language barriers
• travel insurance coverage

You should discuss your medical plans with your primary healthcare provider in Canada before travelling. Most provincial and territorial health care programs are extremely limited in their coverage offered abroad.

• Make sure that the healthcare providers you choose are authorized by the Colombian health authorities
• Check the credentials of the healthcare provider with the Ministry of Health
• Obtain a written agreement detailing the proposed treatment or procedure

If a doctor is not registered and duly qualified by the Ministry of Health or the Colombian Society of Plastic Surgery, you should doubt their credibility.

Some prescription medication may not be available in Colombia.

If you take prescription medication, you’re responsible for determining their legality in the country.

• Bring sufficient quantities of your medication with you
• Always keep your medication in the original container
• Pack your medication in your carry-on luggage
• Carry a copy of your prescriptions

Altitude sickness

Bogotá is located at 2600 metres above sea level. In some parts of the country, you may experience health problems due to high altitudes.

Altitude sickness can be life-threatening. It may require immediate medical evacuation.

Keep in Mind...

The decision to travel is the sole responsibility of the traveller. The traveller is also responsible for his or her own personal safety.

Be prepared. Do not expect medical services to be the same as in Canada. Pack a   travel health kit , especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres.

You must abide by local laws.

Penalties for breaking the law in Colombia can be more severe than in Canada, even for similar offences. No transfer of offenders’ treaty exists between Canada and Colombia. If you’re convicted of a serious crime, you must serve your jail sentence in Colombia. You may also have to remain in Colombia for a parole period following your release.

Colombian law does not prohibit sexual acts between individuals of the same sex.

However, 2SLGBTQI+ travellers could be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression or sex characteristics.

If you are a Canadian citizen, but also a citizen of Colombia, our ability to offer you consular services may be limited while you're there. You may also be subject to different entry/exit requirements .

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. The convention applies between Canada and Colombia.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in Colombia, and if the applicable conditions are met, you may apply for the return of your child to the Colombian court.

If you are in this situation:

• act as quickly as you can
• contact the Central Authority for your province or territory of residence for information on starting an application under The Hague Convention
• consult a lawyer in Canada and in Colombia to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
• report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children's Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country's judicial affairs.

Identification

Local authorities may ask you to show identification at any time.

• Carry photo identification at all times
• Keep a photocopy of your passport and visa or residence permit in a safe place, in case they’re lost or confiscated

You must carry a valid Canadian driver’s license. Your driver’s license will be accepted within your permitted length of stay.

In the event of a car accident:

• remain at the scene 
• if there are injuries, don’t move your vehicle until the authorities arrive
• if there are no injuries, move your vehicle to the side of the road to avoid fines

Failure to remain at the site may be considered an admission of guilt under Colombian law.

However, some accidents may attract a crowd that could turn hostile. If you feel unsafe:

• ensure your windows and doors are locked
• leave the area
• report the accident to the police and your insurance company as soon as possible

To get married in Colombia, you must provide several documents including:

• your birth certificate
• a copy of your passport
• your decree absolute certificate if divorced
• a death certificate for your spouse and a marriage certificate if widowed

All documents must be translated into Spanish and apostilized. Consult the Embassy of Colombia in Canada if you wish to marry in Colombia.

You cannot get married at a Canadian embassy or consulate in a foreign country, including Colombia. Canadian consular officials do not perform marriage ceremonies and are not required to attend your marriage.

Marriage outside Canada

The currency in Colombia is the peso (COP).

The complex weather phenomenon called El Niño happens at irregular intervals of 2 to 7 years and can last 9 months to 2 years.

Seismic activity

There are several active and potentially active volcanoes throughout Colombia.

Debris from erupting volcanoes may clog rivers and cause them to overflow, which could in turn cause flash floods and landslides. Ash clouds may also cause disruptions to domestic and international flights.

Earthquakes

Colombia is located in an active seismic area. Earthquakes occur frequently. Dangerous landslides can also occur, even after minor earthquakes.

Rainy seasons

Colombia’s rainy seasons usually occur from March to June and from September to November. Incidents of flooding and mudslides can occur, especially in rural areas.

Seasonal flooding can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services. Roads may become impassable and bridges damaged.

Hurricane season

Hurricanes usually occur from mid-May to the end of November. During this period, even small tropical storms can quickly develop into major hurricanes.

These severe storms can put you at risk and hamper the provision of essential services. You could face serious safety risks during a hurricane.

If you decide to travel to a coastal area during the hurricane season:

• be prepared to change your travel plans on short notice, including cutting short or cancelling your trip
• stay informed of the latest regional weather forecasts
• carry emergency contact information for your airline or tour operator
• follow the advice and instructions of local authorities

• For the best experience, use a desktop or laptop computer when filling out your form.
• Check the information you entered for your date of birth and previous passport issuance date if you did not get the form you expected to receive.  
• If you are experiencing technical issues with our Form Filler, download a PDF and complete your form by hand.
• Visit the webpage of the  U.S. embassy or consulate  if you are applying for a U.S. passport while in a foreign country. 

Reminders for Printing Your Application

• Make sure the image of the application covers the entire page.
• Use vertical, portrait format. Do not print your form horizontally. Doing so will cause delays with your application. 
• Print your form single-sided on 8.5 inch by 11 inch letter-sized paper. We do not accept double-sided forms.
• The only handwritten marks we will accept when you use the Form Filler tool are your original signature and date. 

Primary Application Forms for a U.S. Passport

1. Application For A U.S. Passport (DS-11) 

• You should complete this form if you're applying for the first time , you're applying for your child who is under age 16 , or you don't meet our requirements to renew your passport. Print the form but do not sign it until you are instructed to do so. You can also download the form if you are having issues with the form filler. 

2.  Renewal Application  (DS-82)

• You should complete this form if you meet our requirements to renew your passport . Keep in mind that children under age 16 cannot renew their passports and must apply using Form DS-11. Make sure to sign and date the form after you print it. You can also  download the form  if you are having issues with the form filler.

3. Data Corrections, Some Name Changes, and Limited-Validity Passports (DS-5504) 

• You may be eligible to use this form if you need to change or correct your passport , or you need to replace a passport that was limited to less than 10 years validity (which is the normal validity period for an adult's passport.) Make sure to sign and date the form after you print it. You can also  download the form  if you are having issues with the form filler.

Forms for Special Situations

• You should complete this form if you lost your passport or it has been stolen . To replace a lost or stolen passport, you must apply in person and submit Form DS-11 in addition to Form DS-64. 

2. Statement of Consent for Issuing a Passport to a Child (DS-3053)

• You should complete this form if one parent or guardian cannot go with the child to apply in person for the child's passport. The parent or guardian should submit this special form in addition to their child's application (DS-11). 

3.  Statement of Special Family Circumstances (DS-5525)

• You should complete this form if one parent or guardian cannot locate the other parent or guardian. The parent who is applying should submit this special form in addition to their child's application (DS-11).

4. Statement You Did Not Receive Your U.S. Passport (DS-86)

• You should submit this form only if we mailed your passport and you did not receive it within two weeks of us mailing it. Call the National Passport Information Center and the customer service representatives will walk you through this form.

Processing Times

Routine:  6-8 weeks*

Expedited: 2-3 weeks and an extra $60*

*Consider the total time it will take to get a passport when you are booking travel.  Processing times only include the time your application is at a passport agency or center.

• It may take up to 2 weeks for applications to arrive at a passport agency or center. It may take up to 2 weeks for you to receive a completed passport after we print it.
