Canada Cruises from Boston

Go north on your next cruise. New England and Canada cruises from Boston take you to magnificent autumn scenery and historic ports. Explore Nova Scotia, dine on lobster, hike, bike, watch whales, and marvel at the colors of the leaves. The complete lists of one-way cruises to Canada and roundtrip cruises to Canada are below.

Bar Harbor, Maine , was once an exclusive summer resort for America's wealthy. Now it's known as the gateway to beautiful Acadia National Park. Take a carriage ride through the park or pedal a bike.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia , passengers are greeted by the skirl of pipes and drums as the 78th Highlanders offer a preview of historic Halifax. Scenic shore excursions are available to the lighthouse at Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg World UNESCO World Heritage Site, and more.

At the port of Sydney, located on Cape Breton Island, cruise passengers will experience the province's culture through arts, crafts and music. Spend the day at Fortress Louisbourg, the largest historic reconstruction in North America or visit the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck. Take a scenic tour of the world famous Cabot Trail.

Saint John, New Brunswick, lives its reputation as "The Fundy City" every day. The Bay of Fundy has some of the highest and wildest tides in the world. Steeped in 400 years of rich history, the tree-lined streets of Uptown Saint John echo back to the Victorian age. Saint John offers the old-world charm of a historic seaport and a base for exciting Bay of Fundy eco-adventure.

Prince Edward Island is filled with natural beauty, excellent exploration and activity opportunities, great food and shopping, and an atmosphere of total relaxation. From spring's green fields to an explosion of gold and crimson in the fall, Prince Edward Island never fails to show you its colors.

Montreal is old world charm, French joie de vivre, and real modern style. The Old City is fascinating and there's great nightlife and exceptional shopping.

What to pack for a Canada cruise? For spring and fall, bring warm sweaters and a medium jacket. For summer, you'll need everything from shorts and sandals to a light sweater or two for evenings by the sea.

11 best cruises to Canada and New England

Donna Heiderstadt

Canada and New England cruises are best known for taking mature travelers to experience vibrant autumnal foliage in multiple destinations.

However, the region's photogenic landscapes, charming ports and fresh local seafood make time ashore uniquely enjoyable for couples and families. Plus, late summer and early fall getaways can be convenient and affordable, especially if you already live on the East Coast.

New England and Canada cruises are mainly offered from late August through mid-October (although limited June and July dates are also available). They sail round trip from New York or Boston, or one-way between either city and Montreal or Quebec City.

Itinerary lengths for Canada and New England cruises range from seven to 11 nights. Ships typically call on ports in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, as well as Portland or Bar Harbor, Maine, or even Newport, Rhode Island. High-end, smaller-ship cruise lines may offer more in-depth itineraries of 11 to 15 nights, with more inclusions and higher price tags.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

It's important to book well in advance if you want to cruise during peak foliage weeks, generally late September to mid-October. Also, Newport, Bar Harbor and some lesser-visited ports on these itineraries do not have cruise piers; transferring to shore via tender boat can be time-consuming, if not difficult or impossible for passengers with mobility challenges.

Here are 11 of the best cruises to Canada and New England to consider.

Celebrity: 11-night Boston, Maine & Canada

cruise from boston to canada 2023

Celebrity Cruises is offering its 11-night Boston, Maine & Canada itinerary on four late August and September dates in 2024 and another four in 2025. The round-trip sailings from Boston — in 2024 aboard the 2,852-passenger Celebrity Eclipse, and in 2025 aboard the 2,902-passenger Celebrity Silhouette — call on ports in Maine (Portland and Rockland), Nova Scotia (Halifax and Sydney), Prince Edward Island (Charlottetown) and Quebec (Quebec City, where the ship overnights).

The overnight in Quebec City also offers an opportunity to enjoy one of Canada's most charming cities after dark. Don't miss the narrow cobblestone streets of historic Old Quebec, with its inviting cafes.

Who should go : This round-trip itinerary is a convenient option for couples or friends seeking to experience the highlights of New England and Canada during the prime late-summer and early autumn foliage season. Celebrity's ships are designed with adults in mind. They offer multiple onboard bars and lounges for socializing — and the indoor, adults-only Solarium pool is perfect for relaxation as fall temperatures dip.

Holland America: 11-night Newfoundland & New England Discovery

Not all Canada and New England cruises are timed for leaf peeping. Holland America's 11-night Newfoundland & New England Discovery itinerary in August 2024 on the 1,438-passenger Volendam aims to make the most of the region's late-summer weather.

The cruise embarks in Boston and disembarks in Montreal. In between, Volendam visits seven additional ports (Portland, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Saguenay and Quebec City, Quebec). It offers a comprehensive tour of Canada's Atlantic Provinces and Quebec.

Volendam will sail nine- to 11-night Canada cruises in August and September 2025 as well but with slightly different routings.

Who should go : Holland America attracts retirees and other passengers in the 60-plus age range. The compact Volendam offers a traditional onboard atmosphere, but foodies should know it offers a limited selection of dining venues and lounges. On the plus side, Volendam's pool features a retractable roof in case of cool or rainy weather. This particular itinerary has no ports requiring tender transfers, making all destinations accessible to most passengers with disabilities.

Norwegian: 7-night Canada & New England

cruise from boston to canada 2023

Norwegian Cruise Line has multiple ships cruising a dozen Canada and New England itineraries from Boston, New York and Quebec City in 2024 and 2025. For value, convenience and a megaship experience, check out the seven-night Canada & New England: Bar Harbor & Newport sailings aboard the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Breakaway.

The 2025 seven-night Canada & New England: Bar Harbor and Halifax itineraries aboard the 3,963-passenger Norwegian Getaway are almost identical. Both call on five ports: Newport, Rhode Island; Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Who should go : Norwegian's Breakaway-class ships offer a resort-meets-theme-park experience with a lively onboard vibe appealing to couples, families and groups of friends. That said, the ships lack an indoor pool.

Cruises during the cooler fall months are best suited for those who enjoy the outdoors. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, and Saint John offers access to the Bay of Fundy's legendary tides. They're also ideal for travelers who appreciate historic architecture. Newport is known for its Gilded Age mansions, and Halifax offers access to the picturesque village of Peggy's Cove.

Oceania: 11-night Canada and New England

Several Oceania Cruises visit New England and Canada in 2024 and 2025, but the 670-passenger Insignia is dedicated to 11-night sailings in September and October of both years. It offers a smaller-ship experience with an emphasis on fine dining.

Insignia sails between New York and Montreal this fall and Boston and Montreal next fall. The port-intensive itineraries include eight or nine ports along the Eastern Seaboard. Cruisers might visit Quebec City and Saguenay in Quebec; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; Saint John, New Brunswick; Portland, Maine; Boston; and Newport, Rhode Island.

Who should go : Oceania's premium cruise experience appeals to couples seeking an onboard ambience that combines culinary excellence with elegant decor and elevated service.

The ship might be small, but it still features two intimate specialty restaurants, a gorgeous grand dining room, a high-end buffet and pool grill, and one of the most decadent afternoon tea services at sea. Standard cabins are on the smaller side, but their modern look and sumptuous beds are appealing. For a splurge, the larger suites will not disappoint discerning travelers.

Princess Cruises: 7-night Canada & New England

Princess Cruises offers multiple seven- to 14-night round-trip and one-way sailings to Canada and New England from New York, Quebec City and Boston in 2024 and 2025.

However, our pick is the seven-night Canada & New England itinerary, which combines visits to four or five ports with a cruise aboard one of Princess' newer Royal-class ships, the 3,360-passenger Enchanted Princess.

Passengers will sail round trip from New York and visit Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Bar Harbor and Portland, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. On certain weeks, substitute ports might include Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Rockland, Maine. Weekly sailings take place from late August to mid-October.

Who should go : Princess ships, even the newer vessels, offer a more traditional take on cruising that's popular with couples and groups of friends who enjoy a quieter experience — although the after-dinner sing-a-longs in Crooners piano bar can get lively. Enchanted Princess does lack waterslides, thrill-oriented activities and an indoor pool if those amenities are important to you.

Travelers who enjoy dining at different venues each night will appreciate the ship's five specialty restaurants (for an additional cost) and more than half-dozen complimentary dining venues. Don't miss the excellent Gigi's Pizzeria, a sit-down restaurant.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises: 11-night Fall Season Colors

cruise from boston to canada 2023

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur , debuted in late 2023. In fall 2024, it will sail a series of Canada and New England itineraries from New York and Boston, as well as Montreal.

The 11-night Fall Season Colors sailing on Oct. 1, 2024, is timed to allow passengers to enjoy regional foliage at its peak as the ship sails from Boston to Montreal. Grandeur calls on Portland, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; Sydney, Nova Scotia; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; and Havre-Saint-Pierre, Sept-Iles, Saguenay and Quebec City in Quebec.

Who should go : Regent's all-inclusive luxury cruises — which include airfare, transfers, onboard beverages and dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi and unlimited shore excursions — have correspondingly luxurious prices. So, passengers are mostly affluent professionals and retirees who enjoy the seamless ease of an all-inclusive sailing offering five-star service.

Connoisseurs of fine dining will be in their element with eight onboard restaurants, which include Chartreuse for fine French cuisine and Pacific Rim for flavorful pan-Asian menus. Plus, passengers can indulge their foodie passions with chef-led classes in the onboard Culinary Arts Kitchen.

Seven Seas Grandeur does not offer an indoor pool for cool-weather swims.

Royal Caribbean: 9-night Canada & New England

Royal Caribbean offers Canada and New England cruises from three cities (Boston, Baltimore and Bayonne, New Jersey) in late summer and fall 2024. To truly experience the Eastern Seaboard, try the nine-night Canada & New England Cruise sailing round trip from the Cape Liberty cruise port in Bayonne aboard the 3,798-passenger Liberty of the Seas. The itinerary visits Boston; Portland, Maine; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick.

Who should go : Liberty of the Seas is designed to appeal to all ages. A late-August sailing with affordable pricing means a late-summer family getaway is possible, while September and October dates attract more couples and retirees.

Liberty of the Seas doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Royal Caribbean's newer, larger ships. However, it does feature waterslides, a kids aqua park, a FlowRider surf simulator, an ice skating rink, a mini-golf course, an arcade, 11 dining venues, 10 bars and lounges, Broadway-style entertainment and more. It also boasts an adults-only, indoor Solarium pool and several outdoor pools and hot tubs.

Seabourn: 12-night Canada & New England Fall Foliage

Enjoying the region's colorful autumnal landscapes is the primary agenda on Seabourn's 12-night Canada & New England Fall Foliage cruises, scheduled from August to early October 2024 aboard the 458-passenger Seabourn Quest and in September and October 2025 aboard the 458-passenger Seabourn Sojourn.

These sailings between New York and Montreal visit Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Saguenay, Quebec City and Trois-Rivieres in Quebec. (The 2025 sailings substitute a few different Canadian ports.)

Who should go : Seabourn 's all-inclusive small-luxury-cruise experience is reflected in its fares, so these itineraries require a generous travel budget. As a result, passengers are typically financially well-off couples, including international travelers, who appreciate the fleet's private-club-style ambience and personalized service.

All cabins are spacious ocean-facing suites, and 90% of the ships' accommodations feature a veranda. The ships might be small, but they still offer four onboard restaurants, including the line's new Mediterranean restaurant, Solis.

Silversea: 12-night New York to Quebec City

cruise from boston to canada 2023

For upscale, door-to-door, all-inclusive cruising to New England and Canada, Silversea Cruises offers itineraries on a wide selection of summer and fall dates. The most comprehensive trip is a 12-night New York-to-Quebec City itinerary in summer 2024 aboard the 388-passenger Silver Shadow.

The itinerary includes calls on Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Portland, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Saguenay and Quebec City in Quebec.

Related: Canada and New England cruise packing list: What to pack for every season

Who should go : Silversea passengers are generally wealthy retired couples passionate about cruising on small luxury ships. They appreciate fine wines and elevated dining, such as the French cuisine offered in La Dame, one of four onboard restaurants. Nightlife on Silver Shadow is generally low-key, though there is a small casino.

Silversea's all-inclusive pricing includes airfare, transfers, gratuities (and butler service), complimentary beverages and at least one included shore excursion per port.

Viking: 12-night Eastern Seaboard Explorer

Viking's 12-night Eastern Seaboard Explorer itinerary aboard its identical 930-guest ocean ships, Viking Neptune and Viking Mars, is offered on two dates in September 2024 and four dates in May and September 2025.

The one-way sailing travels from New York to Montreal (or vice versa, with overnights in each city), and the ships visit Quebec City, Saguenay and Gaspe in Quebec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Boston.

Who should go : Adults-only Viking appeals to cruisers who appreciate a subdued onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures and shore excursions. The cruise line's passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking's fans love the ships' serene Scandinavian-inspired decor, complimentary spa thermal area and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ships do not have an onboard casino, but two pools (one with a retractable roof) offer relaxation during sea days.

Windstar: 11-night Southeast Canadian Explorations

The 11-night Southeast Canadian Explorations itinerary aboard Windstar Cruises ' 312-guest Star Pride cruises between Montreal and Boston in September and October 2024 and 2025. Sailings call on Quebec City, Gaspe and Cap-aux-Meules in Quebec; Louisbourg and Halifax in Nova Scotia; and Portland in Maine.

Overnights in Quebec City and Portland give passengers more time to explore on land and enjoy regional cuisine in local restaurants for dinner. Some itineraries will swap the extra day in Portland for one in Bar Harbor or add a stop in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

Who should go : Star Pride is one of the smallest ships offering Canada and New England itineraries, so these sailings are ideal for travelers seeking an intimate cruise experience with more casual camaraderie than most other small-luxury-ship cruises. The ship features five onboard restaurants, and cabins are generously sized (the smallest is 277 square feet).

While cruise fares are not all-inclusive, passengers can pay a daily fee for a package that includes unlimited beer, wine and cocktails, as well as Wi-Fi and crew gratuities.

You won't be 'overcrowded by thousands of tourists': What to know about Montreal cruises

cruise from boston to canada 2023

  • Montreal is the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province.
  • The city offers a relatively quaint cruise experience.
  • The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023.

I strolled beside patches of purple flowers on a wooden walkway at the Port of Montreal on a recent afternoon. The Promenade d'Iberville green roof, with western red cedar decking and more than 24,000 aromatic and flowering plants, was built on top of the city’s main cruise terminal.

The effect was less industrial infrastructure – like many ports – and more charming urban park.

Montreal may be the largest city in Canada’s Quebec province, but it offers a relatively quaint cruise experience. Bridges between Montreal and Quebec City block vessels with air draft – the distance from the waterline to the highest point on a ship – over 49 meters (or about 161 feet) from berthing at its facilities in Old Montreal.

The ships that visit are generally smaller (though the city can accommodate those with a maximum 50-meter air draft east of the Jacques Cartier Bridge).

“We are positioning Montreal as a niche port for luxury ships,” Yves Gilson, Associate Director, Cruises at the Port of Montreal, told USA TODAY during a visit in May. Here’s what to know about sailings into and out of the city.

The cruise inventory tends to be upscale

Montreal typically welcomes ships carrying 2,000 passengers or less from a number of upscale cruise lines, which tend to operate ships with lower capacity. Those include Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Viking, Ponant and more. Though not a luxury brand, one of the city’s “main client(s)” is Holland America Line, which will send its 1,432-guest Volendam ship there this season.

The port welcomed just over 51,000 cruise guests in 2023. By contrast, its neighbor to the northeast, Quebec City, saw 154,000 passengers . Despite its smaller population, large ships from operators like Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line will visit Quebec City this season (along with smaller vessels).

Jared Feldman, owner of travel agency Jafeldma Travel, added that it’s not just ocean cruise ships that stop in Montreal. “There are river cruises that can get in and out of there as well,” he said.

Gilson noted that the city “could absorb” traffic from bigger ships if not for the bridges. “But on the other hand, the experience for the guest is marvelous because you know they will not be overcrowded by thousands of tourists,” he said.

You can hit the ground walking

The main cruise terminal is close to many of the city’s popular attractions. Old Montreal’s Gothic Revival Notre-Dame Basilica and the Place d’Armes are less than a 10-minute walk away, and numerous restaurants, shops, and museums are also nearby.

I grabbed a prosciutto sandwich at Italian grocery store Dispensa; ate on a bench outside; picked up a coffee at Cafecito and was able to be at the main terminal within 15 minutes or so on foot, while taking in views of the water and architectural landmarks like Habitat 67.

There are also multiple close bicycle rental and Metro stations, and waiting taxis (the port works with software platform, Véco Taxi, which gives priority to electric vehicles).

Gilson said more lines are offering overnight stays in Montreal, giving guests more time to explore.

When is the best time for a Montreal cruise?

Montreal’s cruise season begins in May and ends in October, hitting its peak during the last two months of that period. Feldman said fall foliage is a particular draw for passengers.

Montreal often features on Canada and New England itineraries alongside ports such as Boston, Massachusetts and Halifax, Nova Scotia. The port’s cruise calendar can be found by clicking here .

The sailings tend to last around 10 to 14 days. “The distances between the ports in this region can be significant and navigation through areas like the St. Lawrence River and around the Gulf of Maine take time,” he said. Passengers on those sailings are looking for a “more immersive experience.”

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise?: Here's why these travelers splurged

“Longer itineraries allow for more time in each port and often include scenic cruising days,” he added.

Cruise ships have historically avoided the area when cold sets in, but that could soon change: Ponant’s icebreaking Le Commandant Charcot will offer sailings in St. Lawrence in the winter of 2025. While the ship will not visit Montreal due to its size – though it will stop in Quebec City – Gilson hopes it will mark a shift.

“And eventually we believe that all the cruise lines will get into the St. Lawrence during the winter,” he said. “So, it's gonna be an all-year-round cruise destination.”

6 Top Boston Harbor Cruises

Venture on the water to explore Beantown's waterfront, maritime history and more.

Exterior shot of the Boston Odyssey on the water with the Boston skyline in the background.

Courtesy of City Cruises by Hornblower

Boston is the most populous city in New England – and for good reason. This Massachusetts metropolis may host modern shopping, dining and cultural attractions , but Boston is built upon a rich American tapestry created over the centuries that's still visible in its quaint neighborhood streets and stone houses. The city's historic harbor along the Massachusetts Bay set the scene for a significant portion of Boston's story; once the site of Revolution-era protests like the Boston Tea Party, this body of water is now primarily used for revelry. No visit to Massachusetts' capital city would be complete without some time on Boston Harbor.

If you'll be in Beantown during the warmer months, consider boarding a schooner for an hour or two of sightseeing. Cruises on the harbor offer a range of historical tours, romantic dinners, unique brunches with friends or even the chance to spot some endangered whales. Whether you opt for a tall ship or a smaller vessel, soak in city views and enjoy your time on the water with the following top Boston Harbor cruises.

Boston Harbor City Cruises by Hornblower – Boston Harbor Whale Watch Cruise

Price: Adults from $70; kids from $50 Duration: 3-4 hours

Hornblower's City Experiences brand offers a wide variety of land-based and on-the-water tours. One of the most popular options is its whale watching cruise, which it operates with the New England Aquarium . From Boston's Central Wharf, you'll head to Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, one of the world's most active marine sanctuaries. Whales in the region include humpbacks, minke whales, the endangered right whales and more. You can also try to spot sea birds, dolphins and other marine life. Travelers say the boat tour is great fun and most report seeing whales on the trip.

Tours generally run daily from spring through fall. Exact departure times vary by season. You'll want to arrive at least 15 minutes early and take some medication if you're prone to motion sickness. If you plan to pair this cruise with a trip to the aquarium, you can book a combo ticket to save a bit of money. Boston Harbor City Cruises also runs a variety of dinner cruises.

Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships – Boston Harbor Day Sail

Price: Adults from $55; kids from $35

Duration: 90 minutes

Board a schooner from the Liberty Fleet of Tall Ships and sail Boston's historic harbor in fitting style. Your tour begins by embarking on the Liberty Star, which boasts a 76-foot mast. The crew is happy to answer questions about Boston during the sail, but know that there is no narration during the tour. Travelers delight in both the tour and the boat, noting excellent views.

The fleet sails Boston Harbor from summer through early fall. Sails typically depart several times each day in the afternoon; however, specific times may vary depending on the day of the week. You can also hop onboard for a brunch cruise, a fireworks cruise or for the yearly USS Constitution turnaround sail.

Classic Harbor Line Boston – Northern Lights Sunset Cruise

A Classic Harbor Line Boston boat sails against the sunset.

Price: From $45 Duration: 2 hours

Along this evening tour, you'll be treated to skyline views as the sun dips below the horizon. During the journey, you'll also learn a little about Boston's history and its best sites such as Fort Independence, the USS Constitution , Old North Church's steeple and more. Refreshments are available for purchase onboard. Travelers approve of the cruise – especially the gorgeous ship – and its staff.

Price: Adults from $52.99; kids from $37.99

Duration: 80 minutes

It's nearly impossible to visit Boston and not run into one of its renowned Duck Tours. This type of amphibious automobile was originally created as a military vehicle for World War II. The vehicles used today by Boston Duck Tours are uniquely designed to roll past city sights like Boston Common , the Old North Church and the Fanueil Hall Marketplace before or after launching into the Charles River for views of the Cambridge and Boston skylines. Past customers remember these unique tours as one of the best parts of their visit – and as a special draw for kids, the tour guides may allow children to briefly steer the boat in the water for a particularly memorable experience.

Trips depart from the New England Aquarium, Museum of Science and the Prudential Center; tour prices are the same regardless of departure point. Tours run in the warmer months, usually from late spring to fall. It's a good idea to book online in advance to secure your preferred tour time.

For an extra special evening, sign up for a Full Moon Cruise, which takes place once per month from May to October.

Tours run a few times a month and generally start at 9 p.m. The company also runs daytime harbor cruises and themed cruises that welcome dogs onboard.

Charles Riverboat Company – Charles River Sightseeing Tours

Price: Adults from $27; kids from $18 Duration: 70 minutes

After cruising through the harbor, why not explore another Boston waterway? Along the historic sightseeing cruise of the Charles River, you'll see some of Cambridge's best sights like Harvard University and MIT , as well as Boston University, and the Back Bay neighborhood. The crew will offer tidbits and trivia during the tour. Tourgoers enjoy the outing and several mention that the company is great if booking a private charter for a large party.

Tours run late May though the end of September at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m. If you wish to explore the Boston Harbor and the Charles River in the same trip, consider signing up for the company's Architecture Tour.

Megan rapinoe: what now for the usa legend following uswnt retirement .

cruise from boston to canada 2023

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese cannot replace Cameron Brink on Team USA's Olympic 3x3 team, but here's who can

E arlier this week, Los Angeles Sparks rookie Cameron Brink tore her ACL during a loss to the Connecticut Sun. The injury will keep the No. 2 overall pick out for the remainder of the WNBA season, and she'll also miss the Paris Olympics, where she was set to represent Team USA on the 3x3 squad .

USA Basketball will now need to decide on a replacement for Brink in short order with the festivities in Paris set to begin in just over a month on July 26. But it's not as simple as just picking any player they want as there are specific rules regarding 3x3 eligibility.

Each player registered with FIBA for 3x3 play has an individual ranking that is "calculated based on the 9 best results in FIBA-endorsed events played in the last 12 months."  For the Olympics, FIBA requires that the four-player rosters for each country feature:

  • 2 players ranked within the top 10 of their country
  • 2 players ranked within the top 50 of their country, or have the minimum number of ranking points

In addition to Brink, the current Team USA group features former WNBA player Cierra Burdick, Atlanta Dream guard Rhyne Howard and TCU guard Hailey Van Lith. Burdick (ranked third among U.S. players) and Van Lith (ranked fifth) satisfy the first requirement.

Thus, the replacement for Brink only needs to be in the top 50 of American players or have the minimum number of ranking points. FIBA's website is not clear on what that minimum number is, and their official document regarding Olympic eligibility does not mention points at all. Here is what that document  says:

"To be eligible to participate in the Olympic games, all athletes must have a confirmed account at play.fiba3x3.com and at least two (2) athletes, out of the four (4) per team, have to be ranked within the top 10 of their national individual ranking (only athletes with verified eligibility are considered) on 24 June 2024 (i.e. two weeks before the Paris 2024 Sport Entries deadline on 8 July 2024; while the other two (2) athletes on the team, have to be either ranked within the top 10 of their national individual ranking (only athletes with verified eligibility are considered) on 24 June 24 or have participated in minimum one (1) FIBA 3x3 Official Competition between 1 January 2023 and 24 June 2024."

There are hundreds of Americans who have participated in at least one FIBA-sanctioned 3x3 event since the start of 2023, and the vast majority of them are unknown. That group does not include the likes of Indiana Fever star Aliyah Boston or Washington Mystics forward Stefanie Dolson (who won a gold medal with Team USA's 3x3 team at the Tokyo Olympics).

And despite being two of the biggest rising stars in the WNBA, neither Caitlin Clark nor Angel Reese are eligible as they both have no ranking points.

It's not worth listing out all of the eligible Americans, though you can click the link to see for yourself if you're so inclined. Instead, here is a short list of five potential replacements:

Dearica Hamby -- F, Los Angeles Sparks

Hamby, who is playing the best basketball of her life right now for the Sparks, is the most obvious choice to take Brink's spot. She's not quite as big as Brink, but she does fill the void of a versatile frontcourt player. Plus, she not only has 3x3 experience, she has proven she can excel on the biggest stage. In December, she was named MVP of the AmeriCup and hit the game-winning shot in the gold medal game against Brazil.

Katie Lou Samuelson -- F, Indiana Fever

Samuelson made Team USA's 3x3 squad for the Tokyo Olympics but tested positive for COVID-19 shortly before the games and was unable to make the trip. While she didn't make the initial cut this time around, she would be a viable replacement. She also won a gold medal at the AmeriCup in December and said  before that event that she feels she has "unfinished business" at the international level. Though she wouldn't offer as much versatility as Hamby, or the defensive acumen of Brink, she would give the team an elite outside shooter, and that's extremely valuable in 3x3 which scores by 1s and 2s instead of 2s and 3s.

Camille Zimmerman -- F

Most WNBA fans are likely not familiar with Zimmerman, who did participate in training camp with the Minnesota Lynx in 2018, but has not played a game in the league. An undersized forward with a knack for rebounding, Zimmerman has played all over the world overseas and has extensive 3x3 experience with Team USA. Most recently, she was also a part of that gold medal-winning AmeriCup team alongside Hamby and Samuelson. She will likely not be USA Basketball's first call, but she deserves to be in the mix considering her commitment to the program.

Sarah Strong -- F, UConn

If you're looking for an outside-the-box suggestion, how about the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2024? She is currently playing in the U18 AmeriCup in Colombia, but that tournament is set to end on June 23, so her calendar would be clear by the Olympics. She led Team USA to the gold medal at the U18 3x3 World Cup in both 2022 and 2023 and has a versatile game tailor-made for this format. She has to be considered a long shot, but it would be fun to see Strong on this stage.

Allisha Gray -- G, Atlanta Dream

In terms of pure talent, Gray, who is having another strong season for the Dream, would be the second choice behind Hamby from this group. She won a 3x3 gold medal with Team USA at the Tokyo Olympics and was ninth in the entire tournament in scoring, so it's clear she can perform on that level. However, the current American team already has two guards in Howard and Van Lith. If USA Basketball wants a big to replace Brink, then Gray is out of the running. But if they're just looking for the best player available, she has a chance.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese cannot replace Cameron Brink on Team USA's Olympic 3x3 team, but here's who can
