Born and raised in New York City Herschel has lived in Boulder Colorado since 1968.  “Several years ago I fell in love with the culture and lovely people of Cuba.  As  a  bike tour professional , I knew I had to provide an experience for people to connect in the way I had, on the ground and in a very personal way. I wanted travelers, particularly Americans, to form their own stories about Cuba… to set free their curiosity, dispel myths and make connections with the real people of this unique place.”

The resilience of the Cuban people has transformed  colonization, revolution and isolation into the rich culture and heritage that permeates the island today. As a boy growing up in a poor multi-ethnic community, as a child of immigrants that fled genocide and as a white man with friends and family members of color, I’ve come to appreciate how history, race and class shape the lives we live every day.

Cycling Cuba: Havana to Trinidad

Biking through cuba village

Trip Overview

Itinerary & map, what's included, accommodation.

Cuba cycling tour Caribbean with Bikehike Adventure as featured in USA Today

Cycling through Cuba is one of the most immersive ways to experience this fascinating country. Bicycles are the first choice of travel for local Cubans. There will be many moments when you will be riding among Cubans as you experience this vibrant Caribbean island. Even today, outside of the cities, the roads remain relatively car free.

On this adventure, we spend eight days biking through Central Cuba’s most cultural and historically rich cities, including Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, and the Bay of Pigs. Cultural, rhythmic and evocative, Cuba promises to be like nowhere else you’ve cycled.

WOW FACTORS

  • You'll cycle beside vintage American cars through the streets of culturally rich Old Havana
  • You'll have time to wander and experience the vibrant culture and street scenes of a changing Havana
  • You'll bike along the Bay of Pigs, through rural villages, colonial towns and across the changing countryside of central Cuba.
  • You'll have a chance to take salsa and photography classes in UNESCO recognized Trinidad

Is Cuba legal and safe? We accept most nationalities on our trips, and travelling in Cuba with BikeHike Adventures is designed to be very supportive to the Cuban people. Our trips provide various cultural exchange opportunities and interactions. From our experiences in Cuba, we believe it is a very safe place, especially relative to other similar destinations.

Here's a short video example of cycling through a rural town in Cuba .

And here is an example of a typical Havana street scene   as well as a typical live music scene in a Havana restaurant .

Difficulty Level

Have questions.

Havana Arrival Upon arrival into the Havana International Airport, a BikeHike Adventures representative will greet you and transfer you to a comfortable hotel or casa particular in Havana. The remainder of the day is spent at leisure exploring this fascinating city. You’ll find crumbling palaces, vintage American cars, and meet the local people who are frequently huddled together in the streets, smoking Cuban cigars. Accommodation: B & B  Meals: none

Havana - Matanzas Biking We’ll start with a group orientation before fitting everyone with bikes. Then we’re off for a morning cycling tour of Havana, exploring the Presidential Palace, the most important Colonial Squares, the Revolution Square, and the Prado promenade. This is the ideal way to see Havana, as we can get into the nooks and crannies of this eclectic city and really experience the pulsing rhythm of Cuba. It is important to drop any preconceptions at the door and enter Cuba with an open mind, being ready to be shocked and surprised by everything and everyone you encounter. Havana is a fascinating city, economically poor, but architecturally opulent, culturally rich but at the same time difficult to understand. We’ll break for lunch in a restaurant and then have a bit more time to explore on your own before transferring to Matanzas, a beautiful colonial city on the coast. Here we’ll check into a comfortable hotel or casa particular and have dinner. Biking Distance: 22 km / 14 mi Ascent: +171 m  (561 ft) Accommodation: B & B  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Matanzas - Playa Larga Biking Today we set off early from our hotel, cycling through Matanzas to the Peninsula of Zapata. We ride from north to south crossing many citrus orchards and what used to be prime sugarcane land. We’ll have a few kilometres on the Carretera Central. This single lane road is now used for local traffic, so expect to share the road with ancient Soviet tractors, inner town buses, trucks, 50’s American Cars, horses, and other cyclists. Cuba once became extremely rich farming sugarcane. We’ll cycle through villages where entire families were once employed in the crops. About 20 km / 12 mi into the ride we’ll reach Triumvirato where a monument commemorates a slave uprising and reminds us that Cuba was one of the last countries to relinquish slavery. At the 65 km / 38 mi mark , we’ll stop cycling and transfer to Pio Cua for a late lunch, usually arriving there around 2PM or later. After lunch we transfer by vehicle to our accommodation in Playa Larga, near the beach where the CIA invasion of Cuba happened in April 1961 during the Bay of Pigs Invasion. Dinner will be in one of the seafood paladars (family run restaurant) in Playa Larga. Biking Distance: 65 km / 38 mi Ascent: +335 m (1076 ft) Accommodation: B & B Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Playa Larga - Bay of Pigs - Cienfuegos Biking After breakfast, we’ll spend the morning on our bikes. We’ll ride around the biggest swamps in Cuba (Zapata’s Peninsula). The road clings to the Bay of Pigs, giving us views of the emerald Caribbean Sea. We’ll stop at Playa Giron to learn how the CIA backed the invasion of Cuba in the early 60’s. From here we have a short ride to lunch in Caleta Buena, a natural sea pool teeming with tropical fish. There will be the opportunity to have a dip in the Caribbean after lunch. From here we’ll continue by vehicle to Cienfuegos. Tonight we’ll dine in a paladar on the waterfront of Cienfuegos. Overnight in a comfortable hotel or casa particular. Biking Distance: 45 km / 28 mi Ascent: +119 m (390 ft) Accommodation: B & B Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Cienfuegos - Trinidad Biking We’re back on our bikes this morning, riding along an undulating coastal road with a few short steep hills that lead us through beautiful pasture lands. Around the 20 km / 12 mi mark we’ll be rewarded with the spectacular view of the Escambray Mountain range across a valley of sugarcane fields. The road then sweeps up and climbs over gentle hills until we meet the coast just beyond Guajimico. We stop for lunch after 50 km / 31 mi. The final 30 km / 19 mi is on a flat road that clings to the glistening Caribbean coastline all the way to Trinidad. There are some hilly sections just before Trinidad, but once we enter Trinidad it’s downhill all the way to our accommodation for the night. Tonight we’ll be enjoying Cuban hospitality, staying in a Cuban style bed and breakfast (casa particular). The accommodation is simple but the rooms are air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms. We’ll enjoy a typical Cuban dinner this evening, prepared by the hosts of one of our casa particulares, before heading out into Trinidad to explore this charming World Heritage Site. Overnight in a casa particular. Biking Distance: 80 km / 50 mi Ascent: +551 m (1807 ft) Accommodation: B & B Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Trinidad Free Day Today we have a full free day in Trinidad. Trinidad is probably Cuba’s most famous provincial town and rightly so. It’s a picture-perfect colonial town with cobbled streets, pastel painted colonial homes and very little traffic in the centre – other than horses and the occasional vintage car. Walking around Trinidad is like stepping back in time. In the evenings, Trinidad welcomes visitors with live music and local bars where you can kick back and enjoy a rum cocktail or practice your salsa steps. Optional activities can be arranged locally including horseback riding, catamaran trips, and salsa classes. Overnight in the same casa particular.  Accommodation: B & B   Meals: Breakfast

Trinidad - Manicaragua - Santa Clara Biking This morning we set off from Trinidad and drive on a winding road up through a pine and eucalyptus forest. At the summit of Topes Mirador, we’ll get on our bikes and ride downhill as we cycle through a national park. This is one of the most spectacular scenery days on the trip. Palm trees and other tropical plants will slowly replace pine forests. We cycle along the valley floor between impressive mountains before reaching the market town of Manicaragua where we’ll stop for a picnic lunch. Our day riding ends here and, from here, we will transfer to Santa Clara by bus, arriving in time to visit Che’s Mausoleum before checking into our hotel or casa particular for the night. Tonight you’re free to wander through the centre of Santa Clara and pick up dinner in a restaurant or paladar of your choice. Biking Distance: 40 km / 25 mi Ascent: +539 m (1768 ft) Accommodation: B & B Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Santa Clara - Havana Vintage Car Ride & Historic Tour We’ll transfer back to Havana this morning, arriving in time for lunch. After lunch we’ll have a two-hour tour of Havana in a vintage American Car, finishing at a historic bar called Sloppy Joes for a cocktail. This evening we’ll head into Old Havana for our final dinner in a central located paladar. We’ll then return to our hotel in the Miramar district for our last evening in Cuba.  Accommodation: B & B  Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Havana Departure You’ll be transferred to the Havana Airport for your flight back home. Meals: Breakfast Important Note:  BikeHike Adventures is a Canadian based company and not a US company. Trips offered by BikeHike Adventures Inc. are land only tours within Cuba and are not official US sponsored trips. There are usually multiple small ascents and descents added up throughout the day to reach this total ascent/descent for the day. (While our numbers are generally consistent with Ride with GPS, depending on the mapping technology used, numbers may vary).

Weather in Cuba

Cuba’s weather is typical of its sub tropical climate. As an island in the Caribbean Sea, it is influenced greatly by trade winds blowing from the south and northeast. Weather conditions in Cuba are relatively constant year round with only moderate fluctuations in temperatures and other weather conditions. You can expect excellent weather on your holiday to Cuba at any time. If you are going to Cuba to specifically enjoy the sun, then the months with the sunniest weather are from January to April.

Travel Documents

For entry to Cuba, Canadian citizens require a passport valid for six months beyond the date of departure. Canadians must also carry a tourist card, visa, business visa or student visa. This tourist card is provided by airlines and is issued with your plane ticket. Citizens of other countries should check with their respective embassies for current requirements.

Food and Water

Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisine. The staples of all Cuban meals are rice and beans – sometimes combined together to make congri and sometimes cooked separately and served as white rice and black bean soup (potaje). Cubans eat these staples every single day. Typical meals consist of rice and beans served with pork, beef, or chicken. Plantains, avocado, and cucumber are common accents. When dining out, outside of Havana, chefs have to work with a substantially limited range of ingredients and the cuisine has very little foreign influence. So expect more of the basics on repeat in each destination throughout Cuba.

Water is generally untreated and not safe to drink. Bottled water, fruit drinks, soft drinks, coffee and tea are all widely available and safe to drink.

Our adventures are built for small groups, with a maximum of 12 travellers on each guided tour. Each group is diverse, comprised of men and women of many different nationalities and ages. By travelling in small groups we leave minimal ecological impact, cause less disruption to the native life and are able to gain a better appreciation for our surroundings. Small numbers also allow greater flexibility and spontaneity: a dinner in a local home, an impromptu village wedding invite and any such experiences that can become among the most memorable experiences of your BikeHike adventure.

We understand that people come in many fitness levels, so we've graded our trips accordingly. There are four difficulty levels on our trips: Easy, Moderate, Challenging, and Strenuous.

This is a “moderate” trip. These trips include 4-5 hours of physical activity throughout the day, with many breaks along the way. Biking trips are the most cardiovascular type of types, but there are always support vehicles available on our BikeHike Cuba trips. During the biking section, our travellers don’t have to carry anything on their backs as any packs can be carried in the support vehicle.

The main challenge of the trip is the physical demands of consecutive days of riding. You should have a good level of fitness and the stamina to cope with being in the saddle for consecutive days. We strongly recommend that you begin a regular fitness program - that is if you are not already doing so. Three times a week, 60 minutes per session should be a minimum to prepare you for this adventure. The optimal workout would include varied cardiovascular activities such as walking, cycling and aerobics. If you are able to build in some longer cycling rides into your training, that will also help you prepare.

BikeHike Adventures has been operating tours worldwide since 1994. We started running Cuba cycling trips more than 6 years ago.

The logistics of organizing tours in Cuba is very complex. It is one of our most complex destinations to operate tours but we are very proud of our Cuba tours. We have worked tirelessly to bring this incredible tour to you. Our trip development department has spent long hours researching routes, ground operations and all of the intricate details to make your vacation in Cuba the best it can be. All itineraries are screened before they are added to our growing repertoire of adventures.

Our travellers share a common love for outdoor adventure. Most are looking for a physical adventure in an unfamiliar destination. A typical trip is comprised of men and women of varied ages. Our Cuba cycling travellers, in particular, are typically from 40-65 North Americans (and some Europeans) who are in good physical condition, who enjoy cycling at home as much as they do on trips and who are invigorated by cultural adventures. However, we occasionally get younger and older travellers as well.

In order to ensure comfort and health, good outdoor gear is essential. We have prepared a packing list that you can download by clicking the link to the right on this page.

Yes. We will have a support vehicle shadowing our route, carrying all of the nuts and bolts (fresh water and snacks) and all of the group luggage so that riders don’t have to worry about carrying any gear while biking.

Most Cubans travel by bike, rendering the roads relatively safe and car free, although there will be a few sections where the roads are busier. The terrain is mostly paved roads with a few dirt roads. There is no single-track riding on this trip, but rather road rides that sometimes require you to choose your line due to the uneven ground. For the biking days, you are only required to carry a few essentials (e.g. camera, water, snacks). You will have a support vehicle shadowing your route, carrying all of the nuts and bolts and all of the group luggage so that riders don’t have to worry about carrying any gear while biking.

Havana. You can arrive anytime on day 1 of the trip and depart anytime on day 9.

More about Cuba...

All citizens (of any nationality) traveling through/from the US to Cuba must travel to Cuba within one of 12 US categories.

If you are traveling directly via another country, consult your local embassy or consulate for the latest information on entry requirements.

Multiple airlines have begun offering direct flights between the mainland US and Cuba and each airline individually manages the requirements. It is up to you to contact your airline to ask about any of the procedures.

International credit cards and debit cards, including US credit cards and debit cards, are officially accepted in Cuba. However,  we still do not recommend  that anyone, of any nationality, rely on debit or credit as a payment method while in Cuba. The fact that Cuba "officially" accepts all cards does not mean that everywhere has the infrastructure to accept them. In fact, very few establishments in Cuba are actually equipped to accept any cards, especially in the smaller towns. Cash is king in Cuba, especially outside of Havana. It is best to arrive into Cuba with sufficient cash as well because many of the ATMs in Cuba do not work or are out of cash and unable to dispense you any money. Thus, it is best to always have sufficient backup cash on hand from the moment you arrive. Upon arrival, you can convert money into the local currency for spending. You will be unable to purchase Cuba's local currency outside of Cuba at your bank in your home country. Cuba's currency must be purchased/converted upon arrival into Cuba.

US dollars cannot be spent in Cuba. No foreign currency can be spent in Cuba. ALL foreigners must spend the CUC (Cuban Convertible Currency). You can only buy CUC within Cuba as it is a closed currency. So, you must bring a foreign currency into Cuba to convert into CUC. You must also exchange CUC back to your own currency before leaving Cuba as foreign banks will not accept it.

Money can be changed at the airport, your hotel, in exchange bureaus, and at banks. Banking hours tend to be Monday – Friday from 9.00 – 3.00pm but line-ups at banks are long. The best exchange rate will be at the airport (but also allow time for waiting, as these also have long lines typically).

Cuba has a unique and divided economic system. Foreigners must use only CUC. Meanwhile, Cubans are paid Cuban Pesos that has far less value.

We consider our meals to be an essential ingredient to the success and authenticity of our trips. All of your Cuban meals will be enjoyed in locally run restaurants.

While Cuba’s restaurant scene is improving, no trip to Cuba is a gourmet tour. Food rationing, which has been the norm in Cuba for the last four decades, has restricted the common availability of international dishes. Outside of Havana, chefs still have to work with a substantially limited range of ingredients and the cuisine on menus has very little foreign influence. Meals in Cuba can sometimes be rather bland and choice can sometimes be limited. Fish, chicken and pork are the most common options, with rice, beans and plantain also featuring quite heavily. The traditional Cuban meal is not served in courses; all food items are served at the same time.

Breakfast is included in all hotels and is local style, basic breakfasts. When lunches and dinners are included, they will usually be local style.  Cubans love coffee and it is usually served at the end of each meal, thick strong and sweet, espresso style.

"Casa particular" is Spanish for "private house." These are basic Cuban style accommodations, giving you a closer connection to life in Cuba. During these stays, especially at meal times, guests have many opportunities to communicate and have meaningful interactions with the host. You might call it the Cuban equivalent to what you know in other countries as a homestay or Bed 'n Breakfast. Even if you do not speak Spanish, carrying a Spanish phrasebook will go a long way to to helping you connect with your host. Staying at private houses connects you directly with Cuba's people, culture and way of life. The interactions at the casa stays are often a true highlight of the trip for BikeHike's Cuba travellers.

Yes. On a limited basis. It's best to prepare for a few days unplugged while in Cuba.

To access internet, you must purchase an ETECSA internet card from an official office or from your hotel reception. The wifi will only be accessible from special public wifi hotspots such as the town square or some hotel lobbies. However, be prepared that these zones are mass public internet sharing zones with slow, unreliable connections.

The hotel standards in Cuba will vary from what you may have experienced in other countries. While standards are reasonable, many factors have affected Cuba’s ability to maintain the same international standards one might experience elsewhere in the Caribbean. To best understand this answer,  listen to our full answer here .

Also, you can listen to one traveller’s comparison of the cultural experience and standards staying a week at a beach resort in Cuba with the overall experience while on a bike tour through Central Cuba  here .

Cuba is NOT a cheap country. The standard trading currency for foreigners is CUC (Cuba Convertible Currency) and a CUC converts to roughly 1 USD. Most prices are on par with, or higher than, they are in Canada for the United States. To better understand why Cuba is not a cheap country despite being a relatively poor economy, listen to our  longer answer here.

Can I take this trip if...

Many of our travellers (both men and women) join as singles. On average, BikeHike groups are 75% single travellers and 25% couples. Unlike many adventure travel companies, we don't charge single supplement fees to solo travellers. Instead, we pair you with another traveller of the same gender. If we can't find you a roommate, you get your own room at no additional charge.  A single private room supplement fee is only required if you specifically request a confirmed private room for the duration of the trip. Learn more about solo travel with BikeHike .

We always do our best to accommodate special dietary requests but please ask us about your request when signing up for the trip.

Cuba has limited access to international ingredients so gluten-free type requests are a challenge. However, we can provide advice for making the trip work within these restraints. Cuban meals are already quite basic, usually with very simple and often organic ingredients. If you are willing to bring some of your snacks from home, it is likely you will be able to manage the duration of the trip. We have experience welcoming various vegetarian travellers on past trips by working around the limitations this way.

While most of our trips are created with adults in mind, many of our itineraries are suitable for strong and active older teenagers. This trip is generally not a family focused trip but could accommodate older teenagers. However, we do offer many Family Focused trips, some of which are able to accommodate children as young as six.

Most of our trips include comfortable mid-range accommodations. This includes accommodation that provides a clean and comfortable experience in characterful surroundings that reflect the destination. BikeHike's common practice is to build stronger connections with the communities and support the local economies, and this remains the case in Cuba. That being said, Cuba is a difficult place to explain to first time visitors.  Accommodation in Cuba is one of the topics that visitors to Cuba have the most trouble understanding.

If restricting one’s Cuba visit to a beach vacation, one can stay a large, all-inclusive resort (most of these are near the established beach resort town of Varadero). Outside of the resort areas, the only options are staying in a small hotel or a “casa particular." However, as our vacation tours are not beach vacations and are highly cultural, BikeHike travellers only stay at small hotels and in casa particulars.

Even if you do not speak Spanish, carrying a Spanish phrasebook will go a long way to helping you connect with your host. Staying at private houses connects you directly with Cuba's people, culture and way of life. The interactions at the casa stays are often a true highlight of the trip for BikeHike's Cuba travellers.

Also, as part of that experience, it is important to note that outside of large resorts, Cuba’s hotels generally lack updated furnishings. Cuba is not a cheap place to travel because even small hotels and casas are generally quite expensive. So many travellers are surprised when they find that hotels may feel rundown and completely outdated for the  price when compared to hotels elsewhere in  the  world. This is one of Cuba’s quirks.

While Cuba is certainly a bit rough around the edges, that is also much of its charm. The value in going there now is in seeing its roughness, the real Cuba.

My sister and I had a wonderful time in Cuba – we came back regenerated and ready to face the New Year.  I so appreciate all your help and patience in answering our questions about the trip and allaying our hesitation about going.  We both fell in love with Cuba and the people and learned so much about Cuba’s history.  I loved the riding, not too much, but still a couple of challenging days 😊, and we took Erik up on the suggestion to snorkel which was so worth it.  Erik also took us to the Cuban crocodile Park – another highlight of the trip was holding a baby Cuban crocodile.  Erik and Unior were professional while also being friendly, knowledgeable but also wanted to learn about us, it was just all in all a fantastic trip.  I really hope that I will be able to go on one of your other trips – you offer several to places that are on my bucket list 😊.  I’ve attached some pictures from our adventure.  And again, that you for offering and organizing such a remarkable trip, you and Meghan truly made a difference in my life!

My family has traveled with BikeHike for 4 wonderful trips full of adventure, and I can’t offer enough accolades for the service and experience on each one!. The last trip I went on with BikeHike was a private custom trip to Cuba. We had just 6 days available, and I knew we wanted Trish to help plan this trip and provide a guide as she has lots of experience in Cuba. Trish created a perfect itinerary so that we got to spend time in Havana where our guide Carlos, gave us a walking and biking tour and shared so much culture and history. We enjoyed a tour in a classic Cuban car. The Hotel de Charme was a beautiful casa particulare, which is a private home that welcomes tourists.  Next, we headed to the small village of Vinales to bike and horseback ride to a tobacco farm where we learned how cigars are made, and even learned to smoke one! Finally, we boarded a boat and spent 2 days on the tiny island of Cayo Levisa (request one of the cottages that are beach front for the best views, and only a small additional cost). Trish and her staff helped us to pack in a lot in a short trip, and this allowed us to see different aspects of Cuba. All four trips were seamless, start to finish. Trish and her team made it all so easy and were always available for questions or to provide more details.

This Cuban bike trip was one of the best trips I’ve had in recent memory.

The couple really special moments on this trip happened while I explored and photographed Havana. After asking a Havana resident for directions, we started a long conversation about life in Cuba. This conversation evolved into him walking around with me, and he even took me to his brother’s home in old town, introducing me to his family and cooking a chicken dinner for us. I could go on about how I really appreciated the fact that he gave me a unique personal experience.

A second special moment happened at I was resting in a little park in Havana. A mother and her two little boys came by and the boys started playing baseball with a stick and a flimsy ball made of paper and tape. Eventually the ball was hit near me. I picked it up and threw back an official American League baseball that I had packed, waiting for just such a moment. I’ll never forget the look on the faces of those boys. I spent the next half hour playing with them in the park with a  real baseball.

During the main BikeHike tour, our guide was awesome, she was able to keep control of our group and keep everyone happy. She also invited her mother and father to dine with us in Santa Clara, which was a treat.

These are the unique experiences memorable travel is made of. Thank you, BikeHike Adventures, for helping make them possible!

Traveled with Bike Hike in August to Cuba - taking a bike tour from Havana down to Trinidad. The communications up until the trip were great. The coordination on arrival into Havana were just as good. The tour guide was incredible and the route was great.

If you're looking for high-end bikes and luxury accommodations, there are probably better options. But if you're looking for luxury you probably would be better served touring somewhere other than Cuba. For getting out and experiencing the culture, I couldn't recommend the folks at Bike Hike more highly.

Just home from a fantastic trip through BikeHike in Cuba. We felt well-prepared through the information we got in advance, and the best advice was to leave expectations behind and just enjoy the experience that is Cuba. Our guide and driver were fabulous, very professional and we enjoyed their company as well as their expertise. We learned so much about Cuba and the people.

My husband and I just returned from a BikeHike adventure in Cuba! What a fun trip! We learned a great deal about the Cuban people, their history, and their culture. We were well prepared for our trip by the information that Trish provided before we left. Our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Our bus driver was skilled and professional. The bus was very comfortable, and always available if we needed a break from cycling. We would definitely travel with BikeHike again!

Cuba is a fascinating country and biking across the central region of the island is the perfect way to experience it. Cubans are warm and lovely people!! This is a vacation that will never be forgotten. Thanks to our guides Willie and Michael! Thanks BikeHike for hosting this adventure!

Bike trip to Cuba was my favorite vacation ever, thanks Bikehike for the well organized, greatly informative and truly enjoyable experience! We loved our guide willie, could not have been more helpful, and the local Cubans we met were lovely and kind. Thank you bikehike for the opportunity!

Just returned from BikeHike's Cuba tour. It was absolutely excellent. Very well organized, great route, great food (yes!), amazing scenery. Learned so much about the country, and got to experience it in a multi-sensory way by biking through it. Definitely would use BikeHike again for touring other places...and am also thinking about a return to Cuba one day as well.

Awesome bicycle adventure through central Cuba! Trip of a lifetime.

Day 1:   Havana awaits! It’s hard to imagine coming to Cuba without exploring Havana, so this is where the tour begins. Since we’ll start in the morning, we highly recommend that you arrive the night prior to the bike tour so you have a night to relax and be ready for the tour to begin.

Day 2:  Havana, Palpite to Playa Larga. We breakfast together, then embark on our Cuban cycling journey from Jaguey Grande, stopping for lunch at Finca Fiesta Campesina – a quirky zoo where peacocks, deer and ducks mingle with jutía and manjuarí. We arrive in the small town of Pálpite for a unique Support-for-the-Cuban-People visit with a local bird conservationist. From Pálpite we enter Zapata National Park and then on to the small beachside town of Playa Larga, where we will check into our Casa Particulares for the evening.

Day 3:  Snorkeling in the Bay of Pigs, morning ride. We get up early to snorkel one of the healthiest coral reefs in the Caribbean, on the Bay of Pigs. After enjoying the water, the ride continues to the Playa Giron museum, where we’ll stop to learn about the Cuban side of the 1961 invasion. Today’s ride is a perfect combination of small villages, quiet roads and rural scenery as we make our way towards Yaguaramas. From there, we transfer to our accommodations for the evening.

Day 4: Santa Clara to Remedios. We begin our moderate morning ride with a lovely ride past sugar cane fields and smaller villages. Though our road is smooth, we can see the faint rugged lines of the Escambray Mountains in the distance. Our Support-for-the-Cuban-People interaction today is with a local guide at the Museum of the Guayabera, Cuba’s traditional shirt.

Day 5:  Sancti Spíritus to Trinidad. One of our favorite rides on the tour! After a nice, flat pastoral stretch we start a gradual ascent through farmlands with the verdant Escambray Mountains in the distance. We’ll stop in the town of Banao for an ice cream and mingle with the locals to learn from regular Cubans about their daily lives. Enjoy lunch at an 18th century colonial estate, then check into your lodging and enjoy the 16th century town of Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with wonderfully preserved Spanish architecture.

Day 6: We give our legs a rest and savor historic Trinidad. Our morning highlight is a along a beautiful trail through the forest just outside of Trinidad. We learn about the forest ecosystem and local agriculture, including sugar cane and coffee. The trail with a jump into a tropical swimming hole! Following lunch at a mountainside restaurant we’ll head out for an afternoon paddle. The calm waters of the Rio Guaurabo will float us out to the Caribbean. Enjoy another delicious meal, and maybe a mojito, before hitting the hay.

Day 7:  Trinidad to Cienfuegos.Today’s ride is filled with scenic views as you pedal along the coast, through rolling foothills and fields. It’s a stunning ride along the coast with mountains on one side and sea on the other. We take a break in Yaguanabo, where you can watch the turquoise waters of the ocean brush up against the looping beaches and take a dip in the ocean if you’d like. We stop for lunch at a private restaurant specializing in seafood. Then we transfer by bus to Cienfuegos, the winsome ocean-front city well deserving of the moniker “Pearl of the South.”

Day 8: The final ride of the tour takes place around Cienfuegos. Get out and stretch your legs before we return to Havana. Just outside of Havana, we tour the Museo de Ernesto Hemingway. This is where Hemingway wrote  The Old Man and the Sea . Following the tour, we continue towards Havana with a stop at the Mercado San Jose, a huge arts and crafts market in an old waterfront warehouse. After checking into our hotel, we’ll take a romantic pre-dinner ride in classic 1950’s automobiles around Havana.

Day 9:  Adios Cuba! Unless you have made plans to stay on your own and explore Cuba further, you will bid farewell to this lively country and fly home. (We provide one morning transfer to the airport at the time when the majority of people have their flights home.)

Cuba is an ideal destination for bike tours, with varied landscapes and a rich culture that can be best experienced on a bike. Bike tours in Cuba are usually done on carefully planned routes that cover both urban and rural areas of the country. Here are some common places and itineraries for bike tours in Cuba:

Havana and Surroundings: Havana is the starting point for many bike tours in Cuba. Routes typically include a tour of the city’s old town, as well as visits to the city’s iconic sites like the Malecón and Plaza de la Revolución. It’s also possible to take excursions outside the city, such as to the beautiful Playa del Este.

Viñales Valley: Located in the province of Pinar del Río, the Viñales Valley is known for its stunning natural landscapes and tobacco production. Bike tours through the valley usually include visits to tobacco plantations and caves, as well as a stop in the town of Viñales.

Cuba’s North Coast: Cuba’s North Coast features stunning beaches and small fishing villages. Bike tours usually follow the coast from Havana to Varadero, with stops in places like Matanzas and Jibacoa.

Sierra Maestra: The Sierra Maestra is a mountain range that covers much of the province of Granma. Bike tours through this area may be more demanding, but offer impressive panoramic views and the opportunity to visit historical sites like the Turquino National Park and the Casa de Fidel Museum.

Trinidad and the South Coast: Trinidad is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in Latin America and a popular spot for bike tours. Tours usually include visits to the city’s cobbled streets, as well as excursions to nearby Playa Ancón and other places along Cuba’s south coast.

In summary, bike tours in Cuba offer a unique opportunity to explore the island in an active and authentic way. From historic Havana to the stunning natural landscapes of the Sierra Maestra, there’s a wide variety of places and routes to choose from to satisfy the tastes and abilities of any cyclist.

Group Bike Tours

There are many reasons why a group bicycle tour in Cuba is an excellent option for cycling and adventure enthusiasts. Here are some of them:

1. Share the experience: A group bicycle tour allows you to share the experience with other travelers with similar interests. Meeting other cyclists and sharing the emotions of the group adventure creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship that makes the trip even more special.

2. Safety: On a group bicycle tour, you travel with a guide and support team, which means that there is always help and safety available in case of an emergency or need. Guides know the routes, places, and local culture well, which means you can travel with peace of mind.

3. Travel without worries: By joining a group bicycle tour, you can forget about the worries of planning the itinerary, organizing accommodation, transportation, and meals. The group bicycle tour takes care of all the details so you can focus on enjoying the trip.

4. Discover off-the-beaten-path places: When traveling on a group bicycle tour, you can discover off-the-beaten-path places that may be difficult to find or visit on your own. Local guides can take you to authentic and unique places that are not in tourist guides.

5. An authentic experience: By traveling by bicycle, you can experience Cuban culture and daily life in a more authentic way. By traveling on rural roads and visiting small towns, you can interact with local people and discover the real Cuba.

In summary, a group bicycle tour in Cuba is an excellent option for those seeking an authentic and safe experience in a beautiful and diverse country. Furthermore, the opportunity to share the experience with other travelers creates an atmosphere of camaraderie and friendship that makes the trip even more special.

Itinerary Summary

maurice meet

On this cycling excursion through Western Cuba, tour leader Maurice combines two of his greatest passions: cycling and sharing his country with visitors.

“I’ve spent my whole life riding bikes. When I’m on two wheels I feel like a fish in water. I simply love this physical activity and it is always my preference to be out in the fresh air. When I combine guiding with one of my favorite hobbies I feel as though I’m not even working. The extra benefit is that I get to show you places we couldn’t see in a bus, showing you another side of Cuba that is hidden from most.”

Tour description

Pedal through the narrow alleys, cobbled lanes, and vast landscapes of Central Cuba on this tour that starts and ends in Havana. You’ll experience up close and personal the diversity in nature and architecture and that this jewel of and island has to offer with visits to five different provinces. You won’t just see Cuba, you’ll immerse yourself in its streets and its culture, accompanied by your English-speaking tour leader, bike mechanic, and support vehicle driver.

Our accommodation is in privately owned guesthouses that are typically run by local families. In Cuba this form of accommodation is the best way to get an insight into how the locals live – their food, culture, and it provides opportunities to interact with the family members. Recently comfort levels of this type of accommodation in Cuba have increased considerably and are highly rated by our travellers.

The tour starts and ends in Havana, so if you are interested you can add a few days before or after the tour to experience this unique city. Take our Havana Short Stay package or just add a couple of extra nights of accommodation and choose from our selection of Havana day tours with specialist guides.

Tour Summary

Itineray details, day 1 - arrive havana.

Welcome to Havana! Home of the most fascinating architecture and the famous seawall, el Malecón. Your included airport arrival transfer will take you to your guesthouse in Havana. The tour leader will conduct a welcome meeting at 6:00pm in the main guesthouse. Your optional snack kitty of US$20 will be collected. This money will be used to buy additional water, sodas, crackers, fruits, vegetables, nuts, etc for the road because it is difficult to buy food in remote areas. It is a good opportunity to learn about how the locals like to fuel themselves between meals and to try new foods. We offer this as a convenience, it is optional but those who don’t contribute will not have access. Due to the scarcity of snacks in Cuba, we also recommend you bring your own packaged snacks from home.

Day 2 – Varadero

In the morning we meet the crew for bike fitting and mechanical check, then it’s off we go on our first riding adventure as we tour the modern part of Havana on two wheels. You’ll cycle through the neighborhoods Vedado, Nuevo Vedado, Havana Forest, and Miramar. We’ll stop for a photo op at the Revolution Square where the state buildings are adorned with metal sculptures of some of Cuba’s most important historical figures. We’ll have a delicious lunch at a paladar (private restaurant) in Old Havana before we stretch our legs on a two-hour walking tour of Old Havana four main plazas after which we will hop on our support vehicle and head to one of the top-rated beach destinations in the world, Varadero!

  • Included Activities: Cycling tour of Modern Havana (20km, elevation gain 132m), 2-hour walking tour of Old Havana
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Antique blue car outside of the Havana Capitol building

Day 3 – Matanzas

Rise and shine for an early 30 min drive to Camarioca, just outside of Matanzas, where we start our first cycling route. We ride to Matanzas on a lightly undulating road in good condition. Matanzas is known by many monikers such as the “Athens of Cuba” “Venice of Cuba” or “City of Bridges”, it is rich in art and music heritage and is birthplace of many of Cuba’s most important cultural figures as well as Afro-Cuban history and culture. This hidden gem is often neglected by tourists in favor of the crystalline waters of nearby Varadero, we explore its treasures of everyday life on bike tour though the city.  Afternoon is at your leisure, you can enjoy the sun and sand, bike around on your own, or watch the sunset on the beach.

  • Included Activities: Cycling for 40km (elevation gain: 138m), Bike tour of Matanzas

cycling group gathered in front of tour bus

Day 4 – Santa Clara

We hit the pedals early to our next destination Santa Clara. The cycling route is mostly flat through agricultural fields, small villages, and interesting cities such as Cardenas and Colon. Santa Clara is the city of Che, as here is where the national hero is laid to rest near a gigantic bronze statue of his likeness. Another city overlooked by tourists, Santa Clara is unapologetically edgy, its large student population means that subcultures are well-represented here. It is a city of creativity, and rebellion. Today dinner is included.

  •   Included Activities: Cycling for 50km (elevation gain 156m), entrance to the Che Guevara Museum and Memorial.
  •  Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Large bronze Che Guevara statue

Day 5 – Trinidad

Make sure you fuel up with a good breakfast this morning as we will be uphill riding for much of today’s route. We cycle early to the mountains of Guamuaya, with an average incline of 4% during 10km. We’ll meet a farmer family in Jibacoa who will prepare a farm to fork meal while we rest our legs and enjoy the conversation. After lunch we take our support vehicle to colonial jewel Trinidad where we’ll do an orientation walking tour in the historic center. For many visitors to Cuba, Trinidad is their standout favourite destination. No other colonial city in Cuba is so well preserved, and the local residents are extremely friendly and festive. Trinidad is steeped in religiosity, none the least of which is Santeria, which is one of several Afro-Cuban religions. After the tour the rest of the evening is free. If you have some excess energy to burn, we recommend a salsa lesson followed by a night of dancing in arguably one of the best places for nightlife in Cuba.

  • Included Activities: Cycling for 30km (elevation gain 390m), orientation walking tour in Trinidad
  • Included Meals: Breakfast, farm lunch in Jibacoa, Dinner

Colonial plaza in Trinidad Cuba

Day 6 – Cienfuegos

With the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea at our side, we ride along the coast from Trinidad to Cienfuegos, or “The Pearl of the South”. Expect the terrain to be slightly undulating in the first 5km, then it flattens out with the sea to the left and mountains to the right for about 40km. The last 20k will be hilly. We’ll take the rest of the journey in the support vehicle. French inspired boulevards and architecture await you in the elegant and peaceful city of Cienfuegos. After an orientation tour of the center of the city, around Parque Jose Marti, you are free to explore on your own. Don’t miss some of Cuba’s most beautiful buildings on Punta Gorda. There is nothing like an ice-cold beer at the Yacht Club or the astounding Palacio del Valle while watching the sun set.

  •  Included Activities: Cycling for 60km (elevation gain 356m). Orientation walking tour of Cienfuegos.
  •  Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Classic car in front of Palacio Ferrer in Cienfuegos

Day 7- Havana

We start our last day of the tour with a ride in the support vehicle to Bay of Pigs, site of the infamous U.S. invasion during the JFK presidency. We’ll learn the Cuban side to this story with a cycle on flat terrain to the Museum of the Invasion. Afterwards we’ll have an hour to enjoy the beach snorkeling or swimming and lunch on the road. Back in Havana for our bittersweet farewell dinner (not included). Who could say good-bye to Cuba without a final night out for music and mojitos? Perhaps at the Buena Vista Social Club or the Time Magazine honored Fabrica de Arte Cubano, art and nightlife megaplex (optional).

  •   Included Activities: Cycling for 30km (elevation gain 64m), entry to the Museum of the Invasion

A cenote in Bay of Pigs (Playa de Giron)

Day 8 – Departure Day

Today you can depart at any time, there are no activities or cycling today. We suggest you stay longer to enjoy the many wonderful restaurants, museums, and galleries that Havana has to offer. Your departure transfer is not included but a taxi can easily be arranged with your casa host.

  •  Included Meals: Breakfast

Summary of Travel Times (in Vehicle)

Frequently asked questions, how difficult is this tour.

This tour is best for medium to highly experienced cyclists who are comfortable cycling 20-40km (12.5-25 miles) every other day. A person who cycles frequently should find this tour enjoyable, rather than overly strenuous. However, you must be prepared for the year round heat, humidity, and hills. The support vehicle is always available.

What Will the Weather Be?

Cuba is hot year round but in January and February, there are cold fronts and temperatures in some areas have dropped as low as the mid-40s. May starts the rainy season which lasts through November, but downpours happen throughout the year, so you will need to bring rain protection, and sun protection. Summers are very hot and humid, August in particular is very humid although humidity exists year round.

Should I Bring My Own Pedals/Saddle?

If you are particular about these things you should bring them. The bike mechanic will have no problem installing them for you.

Are Clip-in Pedals Available?

No, and although you are able to bring your own pedals, the guides and past travellers do not recommend clip pedals. The terrain is mostly flat, and regular shoes are more comfortable for exploring during the stops.

What if I Am Traveling with Someone who Doesn't Cycle?

While cycling is a fundamental part of this tour and is central to the experience, travellers who don't want to cycle can ride in the support vehicle. There will still be fun and interesting experiences to enjoy, but with the understanding that they should not expect special arrangements to be made for them.

What is the Terrain Like?

The itinerary describes the terrain for each ride, you can also see the cycling maps here .

What Else Should I Bring?

See the pack list below.

Are E-Bikes Available?

We have E-bikes available upon request. Please be aware that there is a very limited supply of these bikes in Cuba. If you are a moderately experienced cyclist, we encourage you to do the tour with the standard bike, and rest on the support vehicle when needed.

To secure an e-bike for the tour : You will need to pay the US$338 amount in full when paying your tour deposit.

Please read the Terms and Conditions clause on damages (number 29).

See the type of e-bike we use here .

Is This Tour Allowed for US Travellers?

This tour supports small privately owned businesses and aside from cycling, will give you many opportunities to engage with locals. Our accommodations, restaurant choices, and optional activities are all selected to give an authentic Cuban experience and have a positive economic and social impact on the communities we visit. As long as the traveller chooses appropriate cultural activities during their free time (to maintain the required "full schedule" of activities) this tour complies with the rules for the general license under Support for the Cuban People 515.574. Once you’re done, go on a 2-hour walking tour of Old Havana and the four main plazas, after which you’ll hop on the support vehicle for a 2.5-hour drive to Varadero—a top-tier beach destination. Accommodation : Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast and lunch

Old Havana, Cuba

A 30-minute drive takes you to Camarioca, just outside of Matanzas, where you start your first cycling route. You ride to Matanzas on a slightly undulating road in good condition. The city is also known as the “Venice of Cuba”, it’s rich in art and music heritage, as well as the birthplace of many important cultural figures. Matanzas is often overlooked by tourists due to the incredible Varadero being nearby—and you’ll explore the city’s treasures on two wheels. How you spend the afternoon is up to you, you can relax on the incredible beach, bike some more, or watch the sunset. Accommodation : Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast and lunch Cycling : 40 km / 25 miles Elevation gain : 138 m / 453 ft

Sunset at Varadero, Cuba

Rise and shine, it’s time for a new location—Santa Clara, 3.5 hours away from Varadero. The route today is mostly flat though agricultural fields, small villages, and charming cities such as Cardenas and Colon. Santa Clara is another city often overlooked by tourists, but it’s a student city known for its creativity and rebellion. You’ll also visit the Che Guevara Museum and Memorial. As the day draws to a close, go for dinner with your guide and your group. Accommodation : Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Cycling : 50 km / 31 miles Elevation gain : 156 m / 512 ft

Che Guevara statue, Santa Clara

Have a hearty breakfast because you’ll be riding uphill for much of today’s route. Start with a ride to the mountains of Guamuaya, with an average incline of 4%. Meet a farming family in Jibacoa, who will prepare a delicious meal while you rest your legs. After lunch, take a 2.5-hour vehicle ride to the colonial jewel Trinidad—no other Cuban city is that preserved, with the locals extremely friendly and festive. Once you get there, go on an orientation walking tour through the historic center. If you’ve still got some energy in you, go for a salsa lesson followed by a night of dancing in one of the best nightlife spots in Cuba. Accommodation : Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast, lunch, and dinner Cycling : 30 km / 19 miles Elevation gain : 390 m / 1,280 ft

Trinidad, Cuba through the window

Today you’re riding along the turquoise waters of the Caribbean coast to Cienfuegos—or “The Pearl of the South”. The terrain is slightly undulating in the beginning, but soon it flattens out with the sea to the left and the mountains to the right. The last 20 km (12 miles) will be hilly. Take the rest of the journey—a 2-hour drive—with your support vehicle. French-inspired boulevards and architecture await you in the elegant city of Cienfuegos. You’ll have an orientation tour in the city center, and after that you’re free to explore on your own. Don’t miss out on some of Cuba’s most beautiful buildings on Punta Gorda! Have an ice-cold beer at the Yacht Club or Palacio del Valle while watching the sunset. Accommodation : Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast and lunch Cycling : 60 km / 37 miles Elevation gain : 356 m / 1,168 ft

Cienfuegos city, Cuba

Take the final, 5-hour ride with your support vehicle to Havana via the Bay of Pigs, site of the infamous U.S. invasion. You’ll learn about the Cuban side to this story as you cycle on flat terrain to the Museum of the Invasion. Afterwards, enjoy some beach snorkeling or swimming. Have lunch on the road as you drive to Havana for your farewell dinner. Enjoy your last night in Cuba with music and mojitos—maybe the Buena Vista Social Club or the Time Magazine honored Fabrica de Arte Cubano, an art and nightlife megaplex. Accommodation : Guesthouse Meals : Breakfast and lunch Cycling : 30 km / 19 miles Elevation gain : 64 m / 210 ft

Today is your last day of the tour. Take a shuttle to the airport—it’s not included in the price of the trip, but it shouldn’t cost more than $20 per taxi—and catch your flight. Alternatively, stay a bit longer in Cuba, just ask your guides for some recommendations! Meals : Breakfast

Maurice Llanes

Rayner was an incredible guide for the week. We could not have asked for anyone better. And not just with respect to the biking, but everything. He did an excellent job of imparting the history, culture, geography, etc. with our group. He coordinated so much and made sure we all had everything we needed. On top of that, he was a pleasure and lots of fun to be with for the week. Couldn\’t recommend more highly.

Rayner was an excellent guide. Lots of reasons. 1) Very experienced; 2) Great reminders on safety on cycling; 3) Great local knowledge but didn’t over do commentaries; 4) Flexible and caring about group / individual needs; 5) Made it fun. 6) Very personable and engaging; 7) Popular with locals we met. 8) Always went the extra mile.

Daniel was exceptional. Organized, thoughtful, and accommodating.

Rayner was an exceptional guide! He was always upbeat and positive, gave us accurate information and was supportive and helpful.

We went on an 8 day tour with this company. They are accommodating to the needs of American citizens that are allowed to visit Cuba to support the Cuban people. The guide was very good, the group was very small. They gave good tips to help prepare visitors before arriving in Cuba. The days were full with activities, good value for your money. I highly recommend using this company.

DO IT! I had the best experience on this trip with Cuban Adventures. Everyone we encountered along the way was incredibly kind and generous. The food was great, the accommodations were great, and the company was even better. I cannot recommend this enough!

Very well done… glad to have the guidance to see and learn about the entire country of Cuba. Great balance of planned activities and free time for a small group tour. Our guide (Camilo) was fun and easygoing and yet maintained the pace to ensure we were able to see and experience everything… even things we wanted to do outside of the planned tour. Accommodations were authentic & modest, and all had AC and breakfast. Even the bus ride was enjoyable with AC, reclining seats, and a competent and friendly driver. Great value and a lot of fun… book it!

What an awesome, first-rate, outfit! The trip was great – perfectly planned and executed, the best guide and driver ever, and every aspect was handled professionally and accurately. Very responsive, and everyone was nice to work with and extremely helpful.

  • E-bike — available at an additional cost, but limited availability
  • Travel medical insurance — required
  • Optional activities, day-tours, and excursions
  • Guide gratuities — optional

In order to join this cycling tour in Cuba, you should have an excellent level of fitness.

You’ll be cycling every day between 12 and 37 miles (20-60 km) in a humid climate. Bus support will be provided. Keep in mind that it can get very hot and humid in Cuba in the summer months of June through August. And though the temperatures in Winter generally don’t get very low, the cold can be hard to escape from due to the humidity levels and the fact that Cuba houses aren’t set up for cold weather.

E-bike rental is possible, but at an additional cost and it is limited (two e-bikes per departure). An invoice for the e-bike rental will come directly from the guides company and must be paid within 7 days to them to guarantee e-bike allocation. We ask travellers who believe they are physically able to do the route without e-bikes use normal bikes, and if needed, they can travel in the transport vehicle at times.

It can get very hot and humid in Cuba in the summer months of June through August, when lightweight clothing is recommended. In the winter months, it can get colder, particularly in the evenings. Although the temperatures generally don’t get very low in Cuba, the cold can be hard to escape from due to the humidity levels and the fact that Cuba houses aren’t set up for cold weather. During the day, the climate in Cuba is hot and tropical.

Here’s a list of clothing and equipment we recommend bringing:

  • Bike helmet
  • Cycling clothing
  • Leisure clothing
  • Fleece top or similar
  • Appropriate shoes and sandals
  • Water shoes — optional
  • Small towel and swimwear
  • Padded bike shorts — optional
  • Quick-dry clothing (e.g. socks, jersey) — optional
  • Windbreaker — optional
  • Cycling gloves — optional
  • Saddle and pedals — optional

Here’s a list of personal items you need to bring:

  • Day pack large enough to carry all the items you might need throughout the day (25-40L)
  • Water bottle, hydration pack, or hydration bladder (2L capacity)
  • Toiletries (sunscreen, soap, hand sanitizer, bug spray, toilet paper, etc.)
  • First-aid kit (lip salve, aspirin, band-aids, antihistamine, Imodium or similar)
  • Binoculars — optional
  • Money belt — optional
  • Camera — optional (but recommended)
  • Snacks — optional

It’s best to bring a backpack, a duffel bag, or a small travel case with wheels. Our advice is to pack as lightly as possible since you’ll normally have to carry your own luggage from the minibus to the accommodation. It’s possible to leave some luggage in Havana, just ask your guide to help you arrange it—it only costs around 5 euros per week.

If you have special dietary requirements or are traveling with children and like to eat snacks between meals, we recommend bringing your own snacks to Cuba, especially for travel days. Though they are available in Cuba, they may not be readily available or to your liking.

Make sure to bring plenty of cash . Almost no card issued by a U.S. institution will work in Cuba and access to your funds may not be possible, so bring more than you’d expect to spend, just in case. EUR and USD are the most useful currencies—they’ll be accepted in many places, but you can also exchange them once you’re there. Cryptocurrency is also sometimes accepted.

Do not bring stand-alone GPS units (e.g. Garmin)—these are restricted in Cuba. You can, however, bring your GPS watch.

Bikes are included in the price of this trip. If you’d prefer to bring your own saddle or pedals, feel free to do that, the bike mechanic will have no issues installing them. All you have to do is bring your own helmet.

E-bike rental is also available, but at an additional cost and with limited availability, as all bikes must fit into the support vehicle. A maximum of 2 e-bikes can be rented per departure. An invoice for the e-bike rental will come directly from the guides company and must be paid within 7 days to them to guarantee e-bike allocation.

Your guides have breakfast arranged for you every single day—you’ll have breakfast at the guesthouses, and you can expect coffee, milk, fruit juice, bread, eggs, and fresh fruit.

In general, many travelers are pleasantly surprised with the quality and variety of food that can be found in Cuba. One of the highlights has to be fresh fruit and vegetables—think mango, pineapple, papaya, guava, coconut, grapefruit, breadfruit, and avocados. And the drinks? Start looking forward to world-famous Cuban cocktails, such as Daiquiri, Mojito, or Ron Collins. Excellent draught beer as well as coffee are also very popular.

If you’re vegetarian, you won’t struggle finding a vegetarian meal, though there won’t be much variety. Gluten-free options should also be possible, but let your guide know in time.

Guesthouses, bed & breakfast, casas, casas particulares—these are all names for the same type of accommodation you’ll be staying at. Casas are generally run by local families and located in residential areas, which gives you a great opportunity to interact with local Cubas.

Accommodation in Cuba

While the style and comfort levels of casas may vary throughout the tour, you can always expect air-conditioned rooms with an ensuite bathroom. Your guides work hard to select the best guesthouses for your adventure. Keep in mind that the group will likely be placed in a number of different houses within a short walking distance. Every day you’ll meet your group at the “base house”, a central one with the biggest capacity.

Almost all tourists visiting Cuba need to obtain a tourist ‘visa’ which is called the Cuban Tourist Card . The tourist card is valid for 90 days. Make sure you do not misplace this while in Cuba—you cannot leave the country without it. If you’re a U.S. citizen or are flying in via the U.S., a new set of rules applies to you. Find more information in the FAQ below.

The most important thing is to check your entry requirements with official websites or embassies . Here are some general suggestions on how to get the “Cuba Visa”:

  • Apply through the Cuban Embassy or Consulate closest to you.
  • When you purchase your air-tickets, check with the airline to see if they provide the service of arranging visas for you.
  • Tourist cards for Cuba have been available for purchase for many years at airports throughout Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean and can be purchased in a matter of minutes at the time of check-in. NOTE: Please ensure you check the status of this service before heading off to Cuba, these regulations are subject to change—it cannot be guaranteed!
  • Some airlines (Virgin Atlantic, Air France) will not permit you to board the flight without a Cuban tourist card. NOTE: check the regulations with the airline in advance.

This applies to all U.S. citizens as well as people traveling via the U.S. Yes, that’s right, even if you aren’t a US citizen or resident, if you travel to Cuba via the U.S. (specifically if you fly directly to Cuba from a U.S. port or fly from Cuba directly to a U.S. port) then you will need a different Visa (a “pink” one!) that you will purchase during check in for your Cuba flight.

If you are flying directly to Cuba from the U.S. (e.g. Miami, Tampa, NYC) you can purchase the visa in the airport before you board your flight to Havana. This will cost between $75-100 and the transaction takes just a few minutes, no need to worry about adding extra time to your layover to get it. Some US airlines will also allow you to buy the visa in advance and ship it to your home. Do not call the airline to ask, instead search the airline’s website (Airline name + Cuba + Visa in a Google search).

You must also be prepared to comply with legal travel to Cuba under US regulations as if you were an American! In simple and somewhat misleading terms, this is often called a “license”, but it is really just a set of guidelines to adhere to. More detail about the license below.

You’ve heard that you can’t travel to Cuba as a tourist—and that’s true, but that doesn’t mean you can’t visit Cuba and book a trip with a responsible travel company! All you have to do is to fit your travels under one of the 12 categories of a general license for entry. That makes your visit a meaningful one and allows you to come to Cuba. This applies to U.S. citizens, foreign citizens living in the U.S. and foreign citizens transiting through the U.S.

This cycling tour in Cuba is an SCP tour—specially designed for compliance with the Support for the Cuban People category.

None of the general license categories require any prior government approval. If you follow the rules of the license you selected, you’re automatically considered “authorized”. You need to be able to state this category to anyone that asks (such as the airline or a border agent) and document what you do and spend while in Cuba. You must save the documentation for 5 years. It’s also recommended that you carry an affidavit with you because it helps to show paperwork even if it’s not required. If you join this tour, your guides will send you an affidavit.

Keep in mind that this general license is not the same as a tourist card/tourist visa, which is a requirement of the Cuban government. If you’re a U.S. citizen or traveling via the U.S., you will purchase your visa during check-in for your Cuba flight.

The easiest category to qualify under is Support for the Cuban People (SCP) . And this cycling tour in Cuba is an SCP tour! Your guides created a tour which is specially designed for compliance with the SCP. This is the best way for U.S. travelers to have a fun and easy trip to Cuba, legal and hassle-free. Here is a summary of the 5 requirements:

  • Use privately-owned businesses (e.g. private restaurants, private shops, private taxis, etc.)
  • Stay in privately-owned accommodation—these are the casas particulares you’ll be staying at.
  • Maintain a full schedule of meaningful interactions for 6-8 hours a day.
  • Enhance contact with the Cuban people, support civil society in Cuba, or promote the Cuban people’s independence from Cuban authorities and that result in meaningful interactions with individuals in Cuba.

Here are some suggestions that are considered acceptable:

  • Supporting local artists by visiting galleries and/or purchasing art
  • Conversing with your hosts at casa particular
  • Volunteering
  • Taking lessons (dance, language, music, sport…)
  • Shopping in privately-owned businesses
  • Eating at privately-owned restaurants
  • Taking guided tours

Avoid transactions with Cuban Government entities on this Prohibited List . The most important thing is to avoid the hotels and shops listed. For example, most 5-star hotels are prohibited so you wouldn’t want to make purchases there.

Document your activities and transactions in a ledger or travel journal and maintain the records and receipts for 5 years.

As soon as you join your tour, you’ll be spending time with your local guide—thus having a “meaningful interactions” and “promoting independence”, which is a part of SCP.

If you are not a U.S. citizen or are not traveling via the U.S. , please check the entry requirements for your country. Keep in mind that the tourist visa—also called the Cuban Tourist Card—is a must. Apply through the Cuban Embassy or Consulate closest to you.

To get to your Cuba adventure, fly into Havana Airport (HAV) . Airport shuttle to Havana is included, even if you arrive in Cuba prior to Day 1 of the tour, as long as you arrange your pre-tour accommodation through your guides. At 6 pm, the guide will meet with those who have already arrived and go for an optional dinner.

57hours is committed to providing safe outdoor adventure experiences. We require all guides using our platform to have a COVID-19 safety plan and to make the details of that plan accessible to travelers. In most cases, group sizes will be reduced, guides will avoid overcrowded locations, and other safety measures will be met depending on the location and activity.

We also expect clients to respect local regulations and take measures to protect themselves, their guides, and the communities they’re traveling to. For more information on COVID-19 measures in Cuba, please refer to Cuba travel advice and entry requirements by the U.S. Embassy in Cuba .

Please contact us if you have any questions or require further information. We are happy to provide you with the most up-to-date information!

What to expect on a cycling tour in cuba.

How challenging are cycling holidays in Cuba? Our cycling holidays in Cuba are graded either ‘easy to moderate’ or ‘moderate’. On an easy-to-moderate trip, you’ll be cycling through flat or gently undulating terrain, with the occasional more energetic ascent. If you have a reasonable level of fitness and are used to undulating routes with occasional climbs, then you’ll suit a moderate ride.  What do I need to bring on a Cuban cycling tour?  You’ll need to bring your own bike helmet, as these are not supplied. We also highly recommend packing some padded shorts, as you’ll appreciate these after several days of cycling! Cycle gloves are always a good idea and we suggest bringing at least one water bottle and a small rucksack to wear while you cycle (and you can make use of the panniers), to contain a waterproof jacket, camera, food and drinks. All of your main luggage will be transported for you in the support vehicle. What will the accommodation be like on a cycling tour in Cuba?  The accommodation is mainly simple  Casas Particulares  on our cycling tours in Cuba. These are often small, family-run establishments which provide a no-frills experience with adequate amenities and service standards. Sleeping arrangements are simple, sometimes with en suite facilities. Other accommodation will be in comfortable hotels.  What will the food be like on a cycling holiday in Cuba?  Cuban food is simple and healthy. There are nearly 20 different types of classic rice dishes and black bean stew is often served as a side dish. Pork and chicken are popular meat dishes, closely followed by seafood. What will the group be like on a cycling holiday in Cuba?  As with any holiday group, every one is different, so it’s impossible to tell, but an ‘average’ group consists of roughly half couples and half solo cyclists. There's usually a real mix of ages, and typically half male and half female. If you'd like to know more about the group make up on a particular departure, speak to one of our sales consultants. They'll be able to share the rough demographics of the group, and split of solos and couples.

Welcome!   ¡Bienvenidos!

Welcome to BikeTourCuba.com. This site has been put together to document an 800 mile self-guided bicycle tour of Cuba by three Americans in December 2014. Additionally. we hope to offer insight into the planning and preparation for a similar unsupported bike tour in Cuba. We by no means have all the answers but, we have done it, and wish to share our experience with anyone interested. Ours was an unforgettable trip through a fascinating and beautiful place at a historic moment in time. It is our hope that we can help give you a window into some of the real Cuba that we saw, as well as offer some firsthand information on traveling/biking in this unique Caribbean island destination.
