15 Best Things to Do in Dubbo (Australia)

Ninety miles from the nearest city, Dubbo stands alone in the Orana Region of western New South Wales .

Since 1881, Dubbo has been a transport hub with the extension of the Main Western Railway, but there’s preserved European architecture going back as far as 1841. What puts the city on the map for modern visitors is a lineup of big-hitting attractions.

To name a handful, there’s the enormous Taronga Western Plains Zoo, a visitor centre for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, a regional Cultural Centre, one of Australia’s most authentic Japanese gardens and an immaculately preserved gaol from the mid-19th century.

1. Taronga Western Plains Zoo

Taronga Western Plains Zoo

This vast zoo, holding more than 5,000 animals from 350+ species, came about in the 1970s when the Taronga Conservation Society decided it needed more room for its large animals like elephants and giraffes than was available at its zoo in Sydney.

The open-range enclosures can be seen on a five-kilometre circuit that you can navigate on foot, by bike, by car or on a electric safari cart provided by the zoo.

A natural highlight is Lion Pride lands, but some of the other stars are the cheetahs, Sumatran tigers, Asian elephants, giraffes, meerkats and zebras, as well as Australian animals like koalas and kangaroos.

There’s so much to see that tickets for the zoo are valid for two consecutive days, so you won’t need to rush or worry about missing anything.

2. Old Dubbo Gaol

Old Dubbo Gaol

Dubbo’s state heritage-listed gaol opened in 1847 and was developed over the next 100 years before finally closing in 1966. Since the 1970s this has been a fascinating and entertaining window on a brutal era for corrections in Australia.

Among the bone-chilling collections is the largest array of genuine hangman’s ropes in the country, and you’ll learn firsthand what it was like to be locked up in a pitch-black solitary confinement cell.

Making your way through the cells and courtyards, animatronic figures and holographic displays will tell you about the daily routine behind bars and some of Dubbo’s more notorious prisoners.

For an eerie thrill you can also join an after dark Twilight Tour or Beyond the Grave Tour.

3. Western Plains Cultural Centre (WPCC)

Western Plains Cultural Centre

The modern, multimillion-dollar Western Plains Cultural Centre opened in 2007 and integrates historic architecture from the old Dubbo High School, founded in 1917. The WPCC contains the collections of the Dubbo Regional Museum and the Dubbo Regional Gallery.

Temporary exhibitions sourced from these rich collections explore a wealth of themes, like Dubbo’s early development, Dubbo during the wars, important pioneers and entrepreneurs, famous Dubbo residents and economic activity down the centuries.

A couple of invaluable pieces are the country’s largest and best-preserved wool wagon, and a carved tree of immense importance to the local Aboriginal people.

Appropriately the centre’s art holdings revolve around “The Animal in Art”, examining issues around the representation of animals in the visual arts, as a symbol, object, trophy and metaphor.

4. Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden

Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden

Run by Dubbo Regional Council, the botanic garden is on the east side of Dubbo proper and is planted with a mosaic of delightful interconnected sub-gardens.

The most beloved of these is the Shoyoen Japanese Garden, which we’ll cover in more detail in the next entry.

But complement this are spaces like the Sensory Garden, carefully laid out to engage with your sense of touch, smell, taste, hearing and sight.

You can study the native species of the Dubbo Region at the Biodiversity Garden, and a sensational recent arrival is the Oasis Valley Garden, planted with dry rainforest species and showing how species in the local bushland evolved from the plant life of the Gondwana supercontinent hundreds of millions of years ago.

5. Shoyoen Japanese Garden

Shoyoen Japanese Garden

The undoubted high point at the botanic garden is one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in Australia.

This was gifted to Dubbo in the 2002 by its sister city Minokamo and is laced with cultural references and religious symbolism.

Some of the garden’s key features involve water, like the koi-filled lake, streams and waterfall, which stand for the cycle of human existence.

There’s a tea hut or “Chaoya”, a dry garden landscape with raked gravel to symbolise waves and rocks standing for islands.

One of the most beautiful elements is the gate, or “Sukiyamon”, designed and built by Japanese craftsmen in 2013 and held as one of the finest examples of its kind anywhere.

6. Dubbo Observatory

The Milky Way viewed from Dubbo

A benefit of being so isolated is that Dubbo gets stupendous night skies, and these can be studied in exhilarating detail at the city’s observatory.

This offers a basic Night Sky & Telescope Tour, beginning with an engrossing 20-minute talk by an astronomer, after which important stars, planets and constellation will be pointed out with a laser pointer.

If you bring a DSLR camera with you, the astronomer will be able to take a dazzling photograph of a nebula for you through one of the observatory’s telescopes.

For smaller groups there’s the Astro Exclusive Tour, which is a more in-depth and personalised experience, showing some 20 celestial bodies through telescopes and giving detailed explanations about each one.

The observatory also schedules online stargazing experiences and a special Astrophotography Tour.

7. Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience

Royal Flying Doctor Service Visitor Experience

An icon of the Australian outback, the Royal Flying Doctor Service maintains a national fleet of over 71 aircraft and provides assistance to almost 300,000 people every year.

The institution was founded in 1928 by Reverend John Flynn who appears on the Australian $20 note.

The Visitor Experience at the Dubbo City Regional Airport introduces you to the nurses, doctors and pilots who deliver emergency healthcare across a range of almost 7.7 million square miles.

You can read exciting accounts, see an RFDS plane, get a handle on the amazing scope of this organisation and sample daily life in some of Australia’s most far-flung places.

8. Dundullimal Homestead

Dundullimal Homestead

The retired army officer and wealthy merchant John Maughan built himself this slab hut-style homestead in 1842. Now in the care of the National Trust, this is thought to be the oldest building of its kind in the country.

The property, complete with a timber church, shed and sandstone stables, paints a clear picture of isolated rural life in the years of European settlement, and has made it to the 21st century with hardly any alterations.

There are sophisticated flourishes throughout, like louvres and a series of pane-glazed opening to the verandah, as well as a grand sitting room with a tent-shaped paster ceiling and wallpaper reproduced according to a patent from 1850. The old machinery shed houses a tearoom, and you can see the various working areas vital for self-sustenance, including storerooms, a sunken cool room, a coach room and a blacksmith’s forge.

9. Tracker Riley Cycleway

Tracker Riley Cycleway

Alexander Riley (1884-1970) was a tracker based in the Dubbo area who made history in 1941 by becoming the first Aboriginal person to achieve the rank of sergeant in the New South Wales Police Force.

Later this 13-kilometre cycleway was named in his honour, and follows a circuit that lets you enjoy the natural splendour of the Macquarie Foreshore as well as a handful of visitor attractions around Dubbo like the Dundullimal Homestead and the Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

If you don’t have your own set of wheels the Dubbo Visitor Information Centre will be happy to point you in the right direction.

10. Terramungamine Reserve

Terramungamine Reserve

The banks of the Macquarie River, north-west of Dubbo was part of the traditional country of the Tubbagah People of the Wiradjuri Nation, and as well as being a burial ground, tribes across the region would come to gather here.

Evidence has survived down the centuries in the form of rock grooves, created by Aboriginal people sharpening their tools and weapons.

One outcrop continuing for about 100 metres has more than 150 of these grooves.

There’s also a campground at the reserve for overnight stays, equipped with basic facilities like picnic tables and toilets, as well as places where you can access the river by kayak/canoe or for a swim.

11. Dubbo Heritage Walk

Macquarie Street

Among the volumes of leaflets on hand at Dubbo’s Visitor Information Centre is a guide to this easy but informative walk around the historic CBD.

On this stroll you’ll track Dubbo’s progress beginning in the 1850s, from village to town to fully-fledged city in 1966. Many of the grandest landmarks are found on Macquarie Street, like the National Australia Bank Building (c. 1907), the Milestone Hotel (1882) and of course the Old Dubbo Gaol.

Around the corner, in front of Victoria Park is the heritage railway station, which opened in 1881 and remains one of the few station complexes on the NSW line to be built from stone.

12. Wellington Caves & Phosphate Mine

Wellington Caves & Phosphate Mine

If there’s a day trip not to pass up in the Dubbo area, it’s this set of limestone caves and accompanying WWI phosphate mine just past Wellington about 45 minutes out of town.

The caves were first explored by Europeans and soon caught the attention of early palaeontologists for the fossilised bones of megafauna like giant kangaroos and diprotodons from the Pleistocene period visible in the walls.

When we wrote this list in May 2020 there were two tours available.

You could enter the largest cave, the Cathedral Cave, known for monuments like the Altar, a stalactite 15 metres tall.

The Phosphate Mine tour leads you through shafts excavated more than 100 year ago and shows off some of the bones that have wowed natural historians.

13. Narromine Aviation Museum

Narromine Aviation Museum

Continuing the aviation theme you could head along the A32 to the airport in the town of Narromine, where there’s a superbly presented museum run by volunteers.

Narromine Airport has an important place in history, as the setting for Australia’s oldest regional airport, and a secret WWII training base where nearly 3,000 pilots were educated.

The museum recently opened a new wing with three unique aircraft: The world’s only flyable replica of the 1907 Wright Flyer Model A, a Corben Pober Super Ace (1935) and an original Hawkridge Venture glider (1953). An exciting holdover from the WWII days is a Rolls Royce Merlin 25 engine used in the No.

618 Squadron RAF’s de Havilland Mosquito bombers.

While you’re in Narromine you could also make a detour to the statue of arguably the best bowler of his generation, Glenn McGrath, who was born in Dubbo but grew up in Narromine.

14. Dubbo Visitor Information Centre

Visitor Information Centre

If you don’t know where to start, there are excellent information centres both here and in Wellington 50 kilometres to the south-east.

These are especially handy if you’re navigating the rather remote country of the Orana Region.

As you plot your next move you’ll be able to pick up a cold drink or cup of tea or coffee, and relax in a shaded alfresco area, while making use of the free Wi-Fi.

There’s a water and charging station, a playground close by for children, as well as public toilets.

And of course the centre’s staff will be ready to give you tips on attractions, natural spaces and events, and you can grab a handful of leaflets and brochures.

15. Dubbo Farmers’ Market

Dubbo Farmers' Market

One of the top regional events for Dubbo is a hugely popular farmers’ market that trades on the first and third Saturday of the month, no matter the weather.

Straight from the farmer, grower or maker you can buy seasonal fruit and vegetables, herbs, flowers, nuts, plants, honey, olives, olive oil, preserves, jams, marinades, sauces, wine, cider, fresh bread and a wide selection of locally-raised lamb, beef and pork.

Come early and there will be all sorts of delicious and healthy options for breakfast, from bagels to freshly-roasted coffee.

Our guide to Dubbo

  • Getting there
  • When to visit
  • Tours and packages

Imagine a city boasting the charm of rural Australian life mixed with rich textured Victorian colonial history… and the expansive wonder of an African safari. Yes, you read that right. Dubbo is a place that refuses to be boxed in so it’s no surprise it’s one of the country’s fastest-growing inland cities.

It also plays host to over half a million travellers per year, each coming from across the globe to enjoy the easily accessible family entertainment, tantalising farm-to-table restaurants and awe-inspiring nature. Don’t believe us? Six visits from the British royal family since the 1920s can’t be wrong.

Here’s a guide to get you started on your first Dubbo adventure…

Getting to Dubbo

Getting to Dubbo is all part of the fun. It’s approximately five hours drive from Sydney, which means you can either smash out the journey in one day or take your time, stopping for scones and vintage shopping in the romantic Blue Mountains town of Leura. Followed by a touch of wine tasting in the acclaimed foodie town of Orange.

NSW TrainLink also runs daily services from Sydney’s Central Station directly to Dubbo, perfect for those who prefer to let someone else take the wheel and simply sit back and enjoy the scenery.

There are also direct flights to Dubbo from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Newcastle and Canberra.

Wildlife Encounters

We know lions, tigers, and sun bears aren’t exactly something you would normally equate with many rural Australian cities but Dubbo doesn’t play by the rules. Taronga Western Plains Zoo  has been inspiring visitors for over 40 years, showcasing hoards of elephants, cheetahs, zebras and even Sumatran tigers along wide expansive enclosures that feel as close to their natural habitat as possible. What makes it so special though is that it’s also been designed for maximum close contact (as safely and humanely as possible, of course), fulfilling guest’s wildest safari dreams without ever needing to leave the country.

Looking to linger longer? Book a Zoofari Lodge experience  to really up the wild factor with a choice of 15 luxurious tent-style accommodations offering animal and bushland views.

Historic Attractions

Getting to the heart of Australian history doesn’t get quite as affecting (and sometimes spooky) as it does at Old Dubbo Gaol.  This heritage-listed structure once housed some of the country’s most notorious male and female prisoners but now stands as a monument to a bygone early settler era.  Twilight Tours introduce the harsh and dark moments of life in the 19 th century with an added immersive theatrical twist.  Meanwhile, those with a soft spot for the supernatural are invited to join a Beyond The Grave Tour (for 16 year-olds and over), using EMF readers to communicate with spirits of condemned prisoners.

To shake off some of the goal’s eerie energy, visit to Dundullimal Homestead , one of the oldest and best-preserved homes from the mid-1800s. The formerly isolated property is open to the public and provides an insight into rustic Australian life, complete with blacksmithing forge, sunken ‘cool room’ and sandstone stables.

Luxury Accommodation

Much like Dubbo itself, the accommodation options here range from the quaint and historic, such as Ranelagh Bed and Breakfast , to all-out zoological adventures straight from Out Of Africa, at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Both offering their own takes on luxury experiences, with Ranelagh serving up traditional colonial-inspired décor and lush country gardens. While, Zoofari has priceless views of free-roaming giraffe and antelopes directly from your deck.

Hotels and self-contained

Families looking for that perfect mix between offbeat safari experience and the flexibility a self-contained apartment will love the Savannah Cabins at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. Each cabin sleeps up to 6 people and contains a full kitchen ready for cooking at home. The best part? Most Savannah cottage packages include zoo entry in the price so you can come and go as freely as the animals.

Quest Serviced Apartments  provides a relaxed well-appointed haven for those keen to enjoy everything the centre of town has to offer, with Old Dubbo Gaol, Dubbo Regional Theatre and Japanese Gardens situated close by.

Camping and Glamping

Taronga Western Plains Zoo offers an affordable camping option but not as you know it. Billabong Camp  on the zoo’s new ‘Pride Lands’ has everything a couple or family could need to feel off-grid without roughing it too much. Each three-man tent includes all bedding, welcome drinks, dinner and supper, buffet breakfast and two day entry to the zoo. Extra excitement comes at dusk with the lions roaring at the sky as the soundtrack.

Dubbo Tours and Packages

While there’s plenty to enjoy in Dubbo, if you’re up for short half-hour drive you’ll be rewarded with a mysterious calcite cave system in the town of Wellington. Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine runs daily exploration tours through Cathedral Cave, the Gaden Cave and Phosphate Mine, which also houses ancient megafauna fossils.

On completely the opposite end of the scale Dubbo Observatory Tour invites budding astronomers on an entertaining 75-minute guide to the galaxies and planets often not visible to the naked eye.

Top Places To Eat in Dubbo

A full days safari calls for a hot breakfast and according to locals the best place in town to fuel up is Press  located on Bultje Street and famous for its deluxe bacon, blue cheese and avocado roll. Though it’s not just about the food, here a lush jungle-inspired seating area awaits, setting the scene for a perfect morning.

Eager to finish see the day off in style? After a long walk through the zoo you definitely deserve it. Book a table at Veldt Restaurant, also on Bultje Street. Veldt is often regarded as Dubbo’s top eatery thanks to its artfully presented dishes and second-to-none service.

11 Fun Things To Do In Dubbo With Kids

I t didn’t take the kids much to twist our arms and have us agree to take a road trip with their cousins to Dubbo in central west New South Wales, Australia.

It wasn’t the first destination that sprung to mind when I thought of family-friendly destinations in Australia, but as it turns out, there are plenty of things to do in Dubbo with kids. In fact, most of the attractions are family-friendly and cater to children.

If you’ve never been to Dubbo before, you’re in for a treat. With just 39,000 residents, it’s a tiny city, and known for its red earthy landscape. In fact, Dubbo translates to “red earth” or “misty” in aboriginal tongue, so you can imagine the kind of desolate, remote landscape it has.

It’s also just a 5 hour drive from Sydney , which makes it the perfect weekend getaway. In this guide, T and Leah have shared their top attractions in Dubbo so you can decide what to do on your visit.

1. Explore Taronga Western Plains Zoo

2. visit old dubbo gaol, 3. marvel at wellington caves, 4. have lunch/coffee at short street store, 5. observe the night sky at dubbo observatory, 6. dubbo royal flying doctor base visitor education centre, 7. go camping at terramungamine reserve, 8. splash around at dubbo aquatic leisure centre, 9. see old dundullimal homestead, 10. chill out at dubbo regional botanic garden & adventure playground, 11. go fishing or kayaking at lake burrendong, where to stay in dubbo, save this to pinterest, things to do in dubbo with kids.

Without a doubt, Taronga Western Plains Zoo is the top attraction in the city and one of the best things to do in Dubbo with kids.

Spreading across 300 hectares of bushland and integrated grasslands, the zoo is home to over 700 animals from five of the world’s continents.

The large space provides ample room for animals to free roam – exactly how zoos should be!

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is an all weather location. Whether it’s sunny, overcast or drizzling with rain, I’m pretty certain the whole family will have a blast.

The free roaming enclosures mean that you can see each animal type in a near to natural habitat. It’s almost like seeing them in the wild!

You can see the lion pride, hippos, elephants, and even stop to watch keeper talks where you can learn all about the conservation efforts.

Dubbo zoo is structured around a 6-kilometre circuit which visitors can navigate by foot, bike, electric buggy or your own vehicle.

On our trip, we arrived early so we could snag an electric buggy, something all of the kids were super excited about.

Whilst the electric buggy was a lot of fun for the kids, the animals were their absolute favourite thing about Taronga Western Plains Zoo.

Each time we came to another enclosure they would all excitedly point out the animals, taking turns to read the information panels so could learn about their habitat and food preferences.

Having studied the daily keeper talk itinerary, we were able to fit in a few as we drove around the zoo in our buggy.

Whilst the information panels gave a lot of information, the beauty of a keeper talk is they’re always interactive and you can ask a few questions.

The kids loved this opportunity and put the keeper to the test with their tricky questions.

Having visited in Spring, we just missed out on the grand opening of the Savannah Safari. If you plan a trip now you will catch it.

For an extra $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for children, you can experience a unique guided tour amongst the African animals on the Savannah Safari truck. Cheaper than a trip to Africa!

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is open every day of the year. Tickets are valid for two consecutive days. If you purchase online you will save 20% off full priced adult and children ticket rates.

A trip to the Old Dubbo Gaol must be included on your itinerary if you’re staying in the area. It’s an opportunity for you to step back in time with the kids and, if framed well, won’t be scary at all.

Visiting on the school holidays is perhaps the best time to go with the kids as quite often the staff create amazing school holiday programs that a perfectly geared for the younger visitor.

Our visit coincided with the Guided Escapes Tour . It was far from the traditional guided tour, with an inmate showing us around before he was abruptly interrupted by one of the guards.

This is where the show really took off, and with the kids helping the inmate, became quite interactive.

I don’t want to give away the whole experience by detailing it in any length, but let’s just say hysterical laughter was heard across the audience as the kids were brought to task for getting up to a whole of mischief with the inmate. Make sure you do it! (It’s included in the entry ticket).

Old Dubbo Gaol is open seven days a week, excluding Christmas Day, from 9.00am to 5.00 pm. It is off Macquarie Street straight across from Woolworths. Entrance costs $22.50 for adults and $8.00 for children.

Surely exploring a cave system is on your family bucket list?

At Wellington, just south of Dubbo, you can take a cave tour of a cave system that has formed in an outcrop of 400 million-year-old Early Devonian limestone.

Wellington Caves is the most significant site for mammal fossils in the world with those found here ranging in age from 30,000 to 4 million years! You can even take part in fossil finding sessions here.

You can see Megafauna in the cave walls! This made a little exploration of the caves a “must see” on our great Dubbo adventure.

At the Wellington Cave site, you can take a guided tour of Cathedral Cave, Gaden Cave and the Phosphate Mine. They are spread out across the day, so I highly recommend choosing your preferred caves in advance and identifying their tour times so you don’t miss out.

The idea of spotting a giant Diprotodon was almost unfathomable, but sure enough, by the end of our visit, we had checked it off our list.

The kids learned that a giant kangaroo, a carnivorous goanna that was seven metres long and a marsupial lion were also found in the caves. Amazing stuff.

Whilst the Phosphate Mine is famous for its bones, the Cathedral Cave is famous for its stalagmites and stalactites which the kids found fascinating.

They learned the sayings “Stalagmites MIGHT grow up” and “Stalactites hold on TIGHT” which helped them to remember what to call the formations.

Wellington Caves is just under 60 km south-east of Dubbo. The site is open seven days a week excluding Christmas Day from 9.00am – 4.30pm. General admission is at $29.50 for adults, $27.00 for concessions and $14.50 for children (under 4s go free). Each tour lasts for around an hour.

While in the Dubbo area, don’t forget to check out Short Street Store . This is a local secret, but if you make your way to this little hideaway, you will discover the best coffee and homemade bites in town.

It has a calming, relaxing and family-friendly atmosphere and lots of natural light, so you can open up some coloring books and storybooks and enjoy some quiet, relaxing time as a family here.

If you want a closer look of the stars, drop by the Dubbo Observatory. They run regular night time star gazing sessions, as well as astronomy talks, and a chance to look through some high-tech telescopes.

Kids will be amazed to hear all about our planet and its position in the galaxy. They will learn about nebulas, the Milky Way and other galaxies, and have all their curious astronomy questions answered.

Star Gazing experiences usually last about two hours, and you need to book your spot in advance to avoid disappointment.

Learn about the heroes who keep the Australian outback communities safe at the Royal Flying Doctors Service Visitor Experience .

Here you can learn all about the doctors and nurses and their heroic efforts saving lives in the outback, as well as see the aircrafts up close, hear real-life stories, and meet the team.

The museum is well curated with lots of interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences, from AR health stations to witnessing the control screens up close.

Dubbo Royal Flying Doctor Base is open rain or shine, from 9.00am – 5.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am – 4.00pm on Saturday, and 9.00am – 3.00pm on Sunday. They are closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Day, Good Friday and Anzac Day.

General admission costs $23 for Adults, $15 for children (under 4s free), and there are family tickets available too.

Terramungamine Reserve is just 10 kilometers north of Dubbo, and is the perfect place to explore if you want to get out into nature.

This picturesque reserve boasts over 150 ancient rock carvings and rock grooves along the Macquarie River, showcasing the artistry of the Wiradjuri Tribe.

The best way to experience the reserve it to go camping. Here you can pitch a tent and enjoy the serene landscape and tranquil riverside sounds.

If you’ve seen a lot of museums and educational things, then you may want to take your kids to the Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre.

This leisure facility boasts an Olympic-sized pool, a leisure pool, thrilling water slides, and an expansive splash park for the young ones.

Whether you’re seeking a refreshing swim, an adrenaline-pumping slide, or a relaxing time by the water, it has something for everyone.

Another historical attraction in Dubbo worth checking out is the Old Dundullimal Homestead, which offers a glimpse into the region’s rich colonial history.

With beautifully restored buildings, including stables and a forge, Dundullimal Homestead captures the charm of the 1840s. It’s also surrounded by picturesque farmland where your kids can run and play.

The homestead doesn’t take long to see, but it’s worth stopping by to learn about the lives of its former owners.

Another top attraction in Dubbo for families to enjoy is the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden, which is also home to the Dubbo Regional Adventure Playground.

Explore the wonders of nature as you soar through the air on the thrilling flying fox or race down the giant slide. Swing to your heart’s content on the giant basket swing, while your little one’s senses come alive in the sensory gardens.

Marvel at the serene Shoyoen Japanese Garden and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the arboretum.

With its diverse range of attractions, including 40 attractions for kids, this is one place you cannot skip off your itinerary.

Entrance to the botanic gardens and the adventure playground are free, but it only opens from 7.00am – 5.00pm.

Lake Burrendong in Dubbo is the perfect place fishing enthusiastic families.

This picturesque lake is renowned for its abundance of fish, particularly golden perch and yellowbelly, making it a dream destination for anglers seeking trophy catches.

It’s also a tranquil place to enjoy some kayaking or paddleboarding.

While there are a plethora of hotels in Dubbo , we decided to make our trip to Dubbo truly memorable and booked a couple of nights at the Savannah Cabins .

Travelling with two families, we felt that this option lent itself to an intimate, family focused stay.

We wanted to make a real adventure out of our trip so had travelled to Dubbo via Canberra.

Arriving at the Savannah Cabins at the end of a long drive was perfection. The cabins were not only fully self-contained but had a few little extras that made our stay truly amazing, like gorgeous toiletries and fruit.

Whilst the adults unpacked the cars, the kids headed off to find themselves some giraffes.

Armed with the binoculars they had found in our cabin, they trekked through the long grass to an opening where they could see the giraffes over the fence. They also spotted a number of kangaroos resulting in a lot of excited squeals of delight.

Shortly, the kids had recruited other children from neighbouring cabins and before long they were all playing tag, then footy and then tag again. This continued into the night where we shared a barbecue on our verandah. It was perfection.

If you do stay at the Savannah Cabins and the kids are up after dark, I highly recommend going outside to one of the clearings, laying back on a picnic blanket and watching the stars.

Without the lights from a city brightening the sky, you should be able to see the Milky Way in all its glory and even spot a shooting star.

Savannah Cabins caters for a variety of budgets with three accommodation options. You can also read Caz and Craig’s experience at the Dubbo Zoofari Lodge here .

Final Thoughts

Our trip to Dubbo was an amazing adventure with the kids not only learning a little about animal conservation but also widening their knowledge of both scientific discovery and Australian history through our respective tours of Wellington Caves and Old Dubbo Zoo.

On arriving back at home, our youngest traveller decided to do a little research on Megafauna after being inspired by the university project work she had observed at Wellington Caves.

The middle kids decided they wanted to be zookeepers and promptly booked an experience at Taronga Zoo It’s amazing to see travel adventures leading to new projects between our travels.

I wonder if Dubbo will have the same impact on your kids!

Mayoral Memo - 26 June 2024

I must congratulate the former Council for starting a process that will largely conclude this Thursday night. It was following a meeting of the Dubbo Regional Livestock Markets (Saleyards) Technical Advisory Panel on 16 February 2021 that the Council noted issues with the current operating model of the saleyards, even to the extent that Council made a formal request to DSSA to provide advice on new agent entry requirements. It was obvious in early 2021 that change was required – but what changes? All Councils in NSW are obliged to undertake service reviews of their functions. Changes to the Integrated Planning and Reporting framework that Councils must abide by has been an ongoing topic of discussion between Councils and the State Government. Councils must have a rolling process of review to comply with relevant legislation. There is also the Local Government Code of Accounting that states the return on invested capital in a Council owned business should be better than a return on a Commonwealth 10-year bond, currently 4.3 per cent. A service review process was started in July 2021 to review different functions and businesses of Council. Council determined that its priorities for service reviews were functions that had higher degrees of complexity than more typical Council services. For example, many Councils run water treatment plants or sewage treatment plants so the operating model is more established with less variability. Council determined that the Wellington Caves; the saleyards; the Macquarie Regional Library network; Dubbo Regional Airport and subdivision development approvals were areas that needed to be reviewed initially. One of my great frustrations when I was initially elected to Council was that things seemed to move slowly. I am sure that Douglas Hofstadter was thinking of Councils when he coined his self-referential adage: “Hofstadter's Law: It always takes longer than you expect, even when you take into account Hofstadter's Law.” In business, there is often a need to be agile and nimble. To make decisions quickly to respond to the market. A Council needs to ensure that the community is well-informed about a decision that will be made. Over the last three years, information has been brought to the public via saleyards committee meetings and Council meetings. After the years of review, discussions, meetings, legal advice and hearing from the community, the final 26-page report is now in the publicly available business papers. What is clear is this: no decision is not an option. There are three clear options that Councillors will choose from. 1. Sell. 2. Lease. 3. Retain but modify the operating model and increase prices by circa 30 per cent. I don’t know which option will be chosen but I do know that you have ten Councillors who are informed and will make the best decision for the collective interests of residents, ratepayers and the local community.

Macquarie River pollution costs Dubbo sand quarry almost $250,000

A sand quarry near Dubbo has been fined $210,000 after polluting the Macquarie River with dirty water.

Sand Quarries Australia Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of MAAS Group Holdings Limited, was fined in Dubbo Local Court yesterday after the Court found sediment-laden water discharged into the river.

The pollution occurred after a failure in their sand processing water circuit and the quarry continued to operate without inspecting the circuit.

NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Executive Director Operations, Jason Gordon thanked the community members who reported the pollution.

“We started investigating this incident after two people fishing, noticed, and reported dirty water flowing down the bank into the water from the premises.

“The water from the quarry polluted the Macquarie River with high levels of sediment, causing significant erosion to the riverbank and potentially impacting on fish habitat.

“The Macquarie River, Wambuul, is beautiful and holds significant environmental, cultural, economic, and recreational importance in the local region.

“It’s unacceptable Sand Quarries Australia failed to take steps to prevent the incident occurring, including their failure to do routine inspections on their site.”

The company was found guilty of two water pollution offences, and also ordered to pay the EPA’s legal costs of $34,056.87 and investigation costs of $1,952.

They were also ordered to take action to remediate damage to the riverbank and take preventative actions to stop future leaks, spills and other escapes.

Members of the public are encouraged to report pollution incidents, including poor sediment control, to their local council or the EPA’s 24/7 Environment Line on 131 555.
