The 11 Best Coffee Mugs and Espresso Cups of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

We found solid, comfortable options to keep your joe hot

espresso coffee travel cup

The Spruce Eats / Derek Rose

Some coffee lovers prefer a mug that’s bright, lively, and full of character. Others choose mugs because they are simple or functional or budget-priced. With so many options out there, we researched and tested a wide variety of coffee mugs and espresso cups to help customers make a more informed decision. We spent weeks assessing each coffee mug or espresso cup and rating them on their size, design, durability, and overall value until we had the final list below.

How We Tested

Why Trust The Spruce Eats?

Best overall, coffee, le creuset stoneware mug, 14 oz.

Available in many color options

Durable construction

10-year warranty

Capacity a little smaller than 14 ounces

For a classic everyday mug, it doesn’t get much better than this gorgeous stoneware option from Le Creuset. Our coffee expert tested it over the course of several days and found it to be a wonderful blend of style and performance. It's comfortable to hold and drink from, thanks to a sturdy handle and gently curved lip. The stoneware is heavy, creating a high-end feeling and indicating that the mug will hold up over years of use. A scant number of online reviews mention that chipping can occur, but fortunately, our tester didn't come across any issues during the testing process. That said, the mugs are backed by 10-year warranty should any damage happen.

Le Creuset is known for the various eye-catching colors its products come in, and this mug is no different with 20 color options to choose from. You’re bound to find a shade that matches your style or kitchen décor. The mug is also sold in sets of four. It's safe in the dishwasher and microwave as well as the oven if you to swap your coffee for a brownie in a mug .

One detail our product tester pointed out is that the mug's capacity is a tad smaller than the advertised figure of 14 ounces. Le Creuset also labels it as 400 milliliters, which is, instead, roughly 13.5 ounces. Aside from that, this mug received a stellar review. And if you like the design, but prefer it to drink your morning espresso instead, it comes in a 3-ounce version , too (which you can also buy in a set of four ).

Capacity: 13.5 ounces | Dimensions: 3.75 x 5.25 x 4.25 inches | Material: Stoneware

Best Overall, Espresso

De'longhi double wall thermal espresso cups.

Elegant, modern design

Cool to the touch

Comfortable to hold and drink from

Above-average insulation

No saucers included

One of the first images likely to drift into your mind when thinking about espresso is of a tiny white cup and saucer. That timeless image gets swapped out for an equally elegant, but more modern look with these glass espresso cups from De'Longhi.

Our tester found them convenient to pick up, since you don't have to fit your fingers into a little handle, and easy to drink from. They stay cool to the touch even when the espresso is piping hot. Our testing process confirmed that the double-walled insulation keeps drinks hot longer than average, too; granted, this isn't always necessary for a drink that can be finished in a few sips.

Each glass hold up to 2 ounces, which eliminates some guesswork because it's the exact size of a double espresso shot. De'Longhi typically sells them in sets of two, but they are also available in sets of six if you like to entertain . They are reasonably priced, especially for their quality, but we don't quite consider them a budget option. It would have been a nice touch if the set included glass saucers, too.

Capacity: 2 ounces | Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.5 inches | Material: Glass

Best Self-Warming Mug

Ember temperature control smart mug 2.

Exact temperature control

Minimalist design

Several colors and sizes available

Easy-to-use app

Interior coating is extremely delicate

No longer will your coffee be sent to the microwave when it's only half finished. The Ember Mug² keeps beverages at the exact temperature you want (well, as long as it's between 120 to 145 degrees) for up to 80 or 90 minutes depending on what size mug you choose. It's available in 10 or 14 ounces, the smaller of which we tested ourselves. The battery life is an upgrade over the original Ember Mug, along with a more compact charging coaster.

Unlike a coffee mug warmer, the mug itself does the warming, as the battery is built right into the body. The included charging coaster allows you to take the mug around the house wire-free when it's fully charged. It's all controlled via the Ember app, which our tester found simple and convenient. Another nice feature is the LED indicator at the base of the mug that lets you know when it has reached the set temperature. The mug can't go in the dishwasher, which is to be expected, but it's easy to clean by hand and can be submerged in water up to 3.2 feet. Despite the high price tag, we think it's a worthwhile purchase for many customers, and it makes an excellent gift idea too.

Capacity: 10 or 14 ounces | Dimensions: 3.25 x 4.2 inches | Material: Stainless steel

Best Travel Mug

Contigo west loop vacuum insulated travel mug.

Spillproof and leakproof

Easy to hold with one hand

Long heat retention

Hand-wash only

Too wide for some car cup holders

Contigo offers a wide selection of travel mugs for commuters and coffee drinkers on the go, and the West Loop is one of our absolute favorites. It's available in four sizes ranging from 10 to 24 ounces, so you can find one that holds enough coffee to last throughout the workday. It’s leakproof and spill-proof   due to the mug's “Autoseal” feature that locks the lid in place. The brand also designed it with an easy one-handed drinking feature that allows you to open the lid and sip your beverage at the push of a button.

After testing the mug firsthand, our expert found its vacuum insulation to be even better than advertised. Whether it was coffee or water, drinks remained hot longer than seven hours and cold longer than 18 hours. The cleaning process is one of the few shortcomings our product tester noted, however, as the body of the mug must be hand washed, which the brand recommends doing after every use. The lid is top-rack dishwasher safe, though. As one last bonus, all of Contigo’s products have a limited lifetime guarantee.

Best Insulated Espresso Cups

Real deal steel double-wall insulated espresso cups.

Well-made, durable

Keeps espresso hot

Large, convenient handle

Stainless steel isn’t ideal for coffee

A unique option in the espresso world, the Real Deal Steel Espresso Cups maintain drink temperature longer than most other options you can find. As the brand name suggests, the cups are made from high-grade stainless steel, which demonstrated better insulation than ceramic and glass in our testing process. The material also provides a more casual aesthetic: one that looks just as good in a cabin on a cold morning as in a home kitchen.

Each cup holds 3 ounces, which is on the larger side, and the brand sells them in sets of four for a reasonable price. There's a variety of colors options to choose from, including black, blue, stainless steel, and white. Customers can also buy an assorted set that includes all four colors.

One of our tester's favorite touches is the large square handle. He was able to fit his finger through it better than the handles on other espresso cups that he tested, leading to a more comfortable drinking experience. The stainless steel stays cool to the touch, so you can grab the espresso cups (also known as demitasses ) without fear of getting burned. We expect these cups to last for a long time, as they feel sturdy from the moment you pick one up. Perhaps the only drawback is that stainless steel isn't generally considered the best material to drink coffee from. Our tester didn't experience an unpleasant metallic taste, but the history of coffee has gravitated toward ceramic and glass mugs for taste reasons.

Capacity: 3 ounces | Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.2 inches | Material: Stainless steel

Best Value Espresso Cups

Bruntmor espresso cups.

Large capacity

Matching saucers included

Sturdy and well built

Occasional imperfections in paint or ceramic

Stacking is mediocre

These large 4-ounce espresso cups are made for the person who likes a little extra caffeine to start their day. And they stand out in more ways that that too. Our tester was highly impressed by the entire Bruntmor Espresso Cups and Saucers Set after testing it for several days. The ceramic that the brand uses is strong, heavy, and should be able to withstand everyday espresso shots. This level of quality is a pleasant surprise considering the item's reasonable price, which is why we think it's such a terrific value-for-money option.

Bruntmor manufactures the set in interesting color options, ones that are especially fun and bright in comparison to the more neutral colors espresso sets are associated with. The cups are safe in the microwave and dishwasher. Our tester found their insulation to be above average, as the espresso shots stayed hot for more than 20 minutes, which leaves plenty of time to enjoy the few sips.

There was little to nit-pick here other than that the cups aren't the easiest to stack. It is possible to stack them, which will save room in your cupboards, but the handles have to be turned in opposite directions, and even then they don't feel entirely secure.

Capacity: 4 ounces | Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.5 inches | Material: Ceramic

Best Espresso Cup Set

Sweese stackable espresso cups.

Cups have sturdy construction

Stackable and space saving

Beautiful colors

Metal stand lacks quality

Small handles

Looking for a full set of cups and saucers to stock your home espresso bar? Look no further than this 13-piece set from Sweese—a brand with an extensive selection of porcelain dinnerware and drinkware. The purchase includes six espresso cups, six saucers, and a steel rack to keep everything organized. Our tester found that the cups stack flawlessly and all the pieces feel secure, even though the rack itself isn't the most robust. This is an unbeatable option for those who want a large espresso set that saves space in the kitchen, and it comes at a fair price.

Sweese makes the set in three sizes: 2.5, 4, and 8 ounces. Our expert tested the 2.5-ounce espresso cups, but the larger ones may work better depending on the types of espresso drinks you want to brew. For example, the 8-ounce model is designed for cappuccinos . The cups and saucers come in seven color options, including a simple white and brighter colors like red and mint green.

There are a couple drawbacks to keep in mind, unfortunately. Our tester didn't love the handles on the cups, as he wasn't able to fit his finger through them; instead, he would usually grab around the entire cup to drink the espresso. They also don't keep liquids hot as long as other models that were tested. All in all, though, this is a dependable set that looks great on the countertop.

Capacity: 2.5, 4, or 8 ounces | Dimensions: 2.5 x 1.8 inches (2.5-ounce model) | Material: Porcelain

Best Personalized Mug

Shelly klein personalized hobby mugs.

Uncommongoods

Great gift idea

Unique illustrations

Can preview design

Text may be slightly uneven

Some personalized mugs display sentimental family photos. Others have silly quotations on them or a loved one's initials. But they all add a touch of character to your coffee, tea, or  hot chocolate , including these personalized mugs from Uncommon Goods. Customers can get a person's name printed on them or a family name and the year they were "established." The unique part is that you get to customize a whimsical cartoon illustration of yourself or a beloved person in your life. There are 27 hobbies and passions to choose from, ranging from golf to gardening and even holiday-themed options.

Our tester found that there was more than enough variety to create a personalized replica. You can even add pets. Our tester said the designs are printed sharply and clearly and that the colors are bold. The only concern is that the text may be uneven by a fraction. It's almost impossible to notice—we're talking the difference of a millimeter—but it's worth acknowledging nonetheless.

The mugs are 15 ounces each and only come in white ceramic, which makes it easier for the illustrations to pop. As expected, they are a little pricier than an average mug, but they aren't overly expensive, especially for such a fun, one-of-a-kind gift. The mugs themselves have a satisfying weight and a large, comfortable handle, which makes up for the price tag even more. One of our favorite touches is that users can preview the illustration before purchasing to know they will love it upon arrival.

Capacity: 15 ounces | Dimensions: 3.25 x 4.5 inches | Material: Ceramic

Best Mug Set

Royal doulton pacific mug, set of 6.

Different pattern on each mug

Brand sells other items with matching designs

Made from porcelain

Price varies by retailer

Too wide for some customers

This porcelain mug set from Royal Doulton has a style that's distinct enough to stand out, yet universal enough to match all manner of kitchens. The six mugs in the set all feature a different pattern but are bound together by the same Pacific Blue accent color. Our tester was so impressed by the clarity of the designs as soon as he took the mugs out of their presentable box, which makes them a possible gift option, as well. Royal Doulton sells other drinkware and dinnerware with the same Pacific Blue design, including plates, bowls, and serving trays.

The mugs are safe in the dishwasher, microwave, and oven up to 212 degrees. Unfortunately, the price of the set varies by retailer, so you may need to do some digging to make sure you're getting the best deal. That said, you'll have your pick of the lot, as many retailers sell this popular item.

While the 13-ounce mugs don't keep liquids hot for quite as long as other options we looked at, the insulation is still more than satisfactory. Additionally, our tester found them comfortable to hold, smooth and cool to the touch, and easy to drink from, thanks to a wide but proportionate lid opening.

Capacity: 13 ounces | Dimensions: 4.1 x 3.5 inches | Material: Porcelain

Best Leakproof Mug

Brümate toddy.

Completely Leakproof

Dishwasher-safe

Durable and well-built

Multiple color options

Small mouth opening

Hard to open lid one-handed

Not microwave-safe

With its array of leakproof drinkware, BrüMate specializes in keeping beverages inside your cup and off your clothes and furniture. One of its signature prdducts, especially for coffee lovers, is the Toddy. It's sold in three sizes (not to mention more than 20 colors and patterns), but the size that particularly stands out is the 16-ounce model because it's shaped like a traditional coffee mug.

I tested the Toddy for three weeks and was impressed by the results. It's a great bridge between a travel mug and a home mug, combining key aspects of both. When using the Toddy at home, I could sip on the couch without fear of spilling and enjoy longer temperature retention than what an average ceramic mug provides. While I didn't use it as often on the go, it would work well when camping or at the office. I was surprised to find that it fit in my car cupholders too, even though BrüMate doesn't guarantee this for all vehicles. I also verified that the mug was leakproof by vigorously shaking it over my sink and transporting it in my backpack. No drops spilled.

I would caution commuters that the lid latch is difficult to open with one hand, so it isn't made for sipping in traffic. If that's what you're looking for, I'd recommend the 22 or 32-ounce model. The only design detail that I truly question is the small and somewhat awkward mouth opening; there are two ridges alongside the opening that make the sipping experience different from other mugs. Aside from that, the Toddy hits all the marks: reliable, stylish, and well-priced.

Capacity: 16 ounces | Dimensions: 3.1 x 4.5 x 5.5 inches | Material: Stainless steel

Eparé Glass Coffee Mug Set

Courtesy of Amazon

Sturdy glass

Safe in microwave and dishwasher

Available in set of two or six

Average temperature insulation

A natural concern with glass mugs is that they might chip or break from the slightest bump. While no glass mug is completely break-proof, I found these Eparé mugs to be durable after testing them for 30 days. It's also safe to put them in the dishwasher and microwave, which isn’t always the case with glass drinkware, further indicating how well-constructed the mugs are. Additionally, the silhouette has a comfortable shape that makes it easy to hold and sip from.

The mugs hold up to 13 ounces, which is plenty for a typical serving of coffee. The brand states that the double-walled glass improves insulation, but I found the coffee temperature similar to two ceramic mugs that I compared after one hour each. I was impressed that the handle didn't get hot, however, even after I reheated a cup in the microwave. So, if you're interested in the aesthetic that glass provides but worry about the common pitfalls of the material—e.g., durability and getting too hot to touch—Eparé passes these tests and more.

Capacity: 13 ounces | Dimensions: 3.5 x 4.5 x 5 inches | Material: Borosilicate glass

If you’re looking for a coffee mug, the Le Creuset Mug is our top pick. The sturdy construction makes it durable for everyday use, and the beautiful design offers enough variety to match any home décor color palette. For espresso cups, the De’Longhi Espresso Glasses are comfortable to hold, boast an elegant design, and keep your drink at its ideal temperature.

Our expert food writers spent weeks testing all of the coffee mugs and espresso cups featured in this article. The testing methods ranged from measuring coffee temperature in the mugs and cups over a period of time to assessing the general ease of drinking from them and cleaning them. Our testers then rated each item on its size, design, durability, and overall value.

  • JoyJolt Serene Double Wall Insulated Glasses : While some customers may be pleased by these glass mugs, our tester encountered too many issues in our testing process to confidently recommend them. One of the two mugs broke during shipping, raising concerns about their long-term durability. He also found the size of the mugs to be poorly designed. The 13.5-ounce model that he tested was so large, especially around the lip, that it was awkward and uncomfortable to drink from.

What to Look in Coffee Mugs and Espresso Cups

The material you choose can impact how you enjoy your beverage. For instance, if you sip coffee slowly, a heat-resistant material, such as stainless steel or double-wall insulation may be in your best interest. If you’re picky about keeping your coffee’s flavor completely pure, then you may want to steer clear of a stainless steel cup, as it can sometimes impart a metallic taste to your drink. A neutral material, such as porcelain or stoneware, would be better suited for this preference.

Another important consideration may be whether you have children and if they'll be handling your cups and mugs. If this is the case, opting for a more durable material, such as stainless steel or thick ceramic, would be ideal.

All espresso cups and coffee mugs have different safety features to offer. Depending on how you use your mug, there may be certain safety options to look for when buying a new mug. Microwave-safe mugs are ideal for someone who likes to reheat their coffee throughout the day. For quick cleanup, being able to put your mug in the dishwasher without having to worry about it getting damaged is another important quality to look for, as is whether it's freezer-, oven-, or broiler-safe.

A coffee mug or espresso cup’s capacity is important to note when shopping around. To know what mug or cup to buy, determine what types of coffee drinks you enjoy most often. If it’s just a single espresso shot, look for a cup with a smaller capacity ranging somewhere between 2 and 4 ounces. If you drink drip coffee or espresso drinks, such as cappuccinos and lattes, it’s best to look for a vessel with a larger volume starting at about 6 ounces and going up from there.

What is a demitasse cup?

A demitasse cup is just another word for an espresso cup. The terms can be used interchangeably. In French, "demitasse" translates to "half cup." This might sound like a misnomer at first, as a demitasse only holds 2 to 3 ounces, but the translation is actually fitting because most coffee brands consider a cup to be 5 ounces.

What material keeps coffee hot longest?

Of the materials commonly used in drinkware, stainless steel is the best at keeping liquids hot for a long period of time. Unfortunately, stainless steel is more common for travel mugs and tumblers than traditional home mugs. As a result, ceramic mugs are the most popular for home use. They keep coffee hot longer than porcelain (which happens to be a type of ceramic), glass, and plastic. They can also be placed in the microwave, unlike stainless steel mugs.

What type of mug should I use for a latte?

Latte cups tend to be short with wide openings, almost like a bowl. This allows the top layer of milk foam to spread more thinly across the drink. If a mug is too narrow, the milk foam ends up in a massive heap at the top and gets in the way of sipping the steamed milk and espresso. A wider cup also provides more space for latte art. Lattes are usually served in larger sizes than cappuccinos, so a standard latte cup is larger than a standard cappuccino cup.

How do you get stains out of a coffee mug?

If your mug is weathered and has its share of coffee stains, you can use baking soda as a possible solution. Add a small amount onto the bottom of the stained cup, followed by a small amount of water to form a paste. Proceed by gently scrubbing away the stains. They should disappear in a matter of minutes. Rinse and wash as normal.

Should you drink from a cracked coffee mug?

If that beloved mug of yours that’s cracked, fear not, as you can possibly repair the damage. If the crack is external—somewhere like on the handle—it's easy to seal up the cracks with a bit of super glue. Cracks found on the inside of the mug that cause it to leak can be more difficult to repair. It may be best to purchase another mug instead.

The 10 Best Espresso Cups, According to a Coffee Expert

Our list of barista-approved picks includes glass, ceramic, and stainless steel options.

  • Our Top Picks

Our Favorite Espresso Cups

Factors to consider, our expertise.

Food & Wine / Amazon

If you're serious about making espresso , you know that the coffee gear you choose matters as much as the origin and roast of the coffee beans . For many, espresso is a daily ritual. And, like most rituals, there are many passionate opinions about the right way to pull and sip an espresso shot. Determined to get to the bottom of at least part of that equation, we took on the task of uncovering the best espresso cups out there.

We vetted dozens of options to find 10 picks that deserve a spot next to your go-to coffee maker . From stainless steel vessels great for camping to double-walled insulated glass designs, these espresso cups guarantee an authentic shot of espresso . We also tapped Jesse Raub , a longtime pro in the specialty coffee industry, for tips and tricks on pulling a perfect shot and why the ideal espresso cup ensures you never have to tilt your head.

Best Overall

De'longhi double wall thermal espresso cups.

When it comes to a tried-and-true espresso cup you can count on, Italian coffee brand De’Longhi has an ace. Made from ultra-clear borosilicate glass, these double-walled espresso glasses guard against breakage and keep your sip piping hot for longer than their counterparts. The shape tapers gently at the base, allowing for more formation of crema and, according to Raub, less likelihood that you’d have to tilt the cup to sip.

“The best espresso cups feature a slight slant of the walls, which helps the espresso flow towards your lips with a very slight tilt,” he explains. “Straight-walled cups tend to pool in the bottom corner and you have to tilt the whole thing (and your head) back to get the espresso out.”

Capacity: 2 ounces | Material: Borosilicate glass | Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.5 inches

Terres de Rêves Espresso Cups, Set of 4

Looking to treat your favorite coffee lover to some new gear? Look no further than this special espresso set by Serax, which looks like a lucky antique find and functions like a pro-worthy selection. With a calming palette of cool blues and earthy browns, they’ll capture the hearts of coffee connoisseurs and design aficionados alike, making them a great option for anyone who likes to keep their coffee supplies styled out in the open.

Each cup features a generous handle spanning from mouth to foot, with a contrasting glaze on the interior for an extra special touch. While they don’t boast a tapered interior, they are ideally sized for a single shot of espresso and are made from microwave- and dishwasher-safe stoneware for added heat retention.

Capacity: 3 ounces | Material: Stoneware | Dimensions: 2.38 x 2 inches

Best Insulated

Bodum pavina double wall espresso glass.

When it comes to keeping your espresso hot and toasty for as long as possible, the secret lies in the double-walled design. These sleek glasses from Bodum master that and more, with a mouth-blown borosilicate glass construction that is both pretty and practical.

Each glass is designed with a silicone vent at the base, which serves to equalize the air pressure between the two layers of glass, preventing condensation and keeping drinks at the right temperature. Beyond that, they’re pretty to look at and are a fun pick for any espresso lover who likes to measure exactly how much crema their pull got them.

Capacity: 3.5 ounces | Material: Borosilicate glass, silicone | Dimensions: 3.1 x 2.8 inches

Best with Saucer

Serax inku scalloped ceramic coffee cup & saucer.

While saucers aren’t a necessary component to enjoying a legitimate espresso, you’ll often notice that many come with one when ordering out in the wild. The reason? Snacking, of course! It’s not uncommon for espresso to be served alongside a biscuit or pastry, making the saucer an appreciated addition to the equation. It also serves to protect your dining surface and catch any rogue spills.

If you’re on the hunt for an espresso cup set that comes with saucers, this Inku collection is for you. Designed by a Michelin star chef and inspired by a Japanese wabi-sabi aesthetic, they’re a bespoke blend of form and function perfect for discerning sippers. At 5 ounces, they’re also the largest pick on our list, so you could use them for a latte , cappuccino , or cup of tea.

Capacity: 5 ounces | Material: Stoneware | Dimensions: 3.38 x 2.13 inches

Bruntmor Espresso Cups

If you’re starting your espresso cup collection from scratch and are looking for a budget-friendly way to stock up, you can’t go wrong with these Bruntmor espresso cups. Made from chip-resistant ceramic, they’re a simple yet stunning way to sip your morning shot from your favorite Nespresso machine . Each cup fits up to 4 ounces of liquid, with a roomy handle for a comfortable grip.

Whereas some ceramic designs necessitate expert-level care, this durable design is dishwasher-, freezer-, microwave-, and oven-safe, so they’re practically indestructible. Bonus: The set of four cups each comes with corresponding saucers for a versatile collection.

Capacity: 4 ounces | Material: Ceramic | Dimensions : 8 x 5 inches

Best Design

Villeroy & boch new wave cafe espresso cup.

Part espresso cup, part work of art, this sculptural vessel from iconic dinnerware brand Villeroy & Boch is made for anyone who appreciates the impact of good design. Like many of the brand’s pieces, this cup is made from high-quality premium porcelain, with impact-resistant edges that keep it from chipping or cracking, even with daily wear and tear.

The shape is a staple part of Villeroy & Boch’s collection, and they often release special designs you can collect in addition to the classic white colorway. Whichever you choose, this is one espresso cup that looks impactful on the table and feels elegant in the hand, elevating your daily coffee ritual into a moment to savor.

Capacity: 2.75 ounces | Material: Porcelain | Dimensions: 3.5 x 2.75 inches

Best Splurge

Notneutral espresso cups.

Raub’s pick for the best espresso cup, this notNeutral Lino set is beloved by industry pros for its simple yet effective design. “They have a nice slope to them, a wide flat handle that’s easy to grab, and a thicker ceramic base, which is great at holding in heat,” says Raub.

This pick, which includes a cup and saucer, will run you a bit more, but it will be worth it once you realize the difference a quality cup can make. True to form, the interior of each cup features a hidden curvature to optimize insulation and sipping, while the handle is flush with the rim for an easy and natural hold. Each porcelain piece is dishwasher- and microwave-safe, and sized to a perfectly petite 3-ounce capacity.

Capacity: 3 ounces | Material: Porcelain | Dimensions: 2.65 x 2 inches

Best with Cookie Tray

Blomus pilar ceramic espresso cup.

If you’re someone who aspires to live a more European lifestyle (aren’t we all?), then you’re going to want to add this cup and tray set from Blomus to your collection. Perfect for your afternoon merenda , it’s designed with an oblong shape that has just enough room for a small treat, like a cookie, cornetto, or even just a few crackers.

The espresso cup and dish are made from quality ceramic and can be purchased in several chic neutral shades, like cream, pewter, green, and gray. The bitsy handle on the cup is one of the smallest on our list, but we like to think it will encourage you to slow down and sip.

Capacity: 2 ounces | Material: Ceramic | Dimensions: 2.76 x 2 inches

Best Stackable

Sweese stackable espresso cups.

If you have a strict one-in, one-out rule when it comes to coffee mugs, these stacking cups may just have you changing your tune. They have built-in organization in the form of a functional metal stand, which keeps all four cups and their corresponding saucers neatly stacked. You can use the set as a way to keep things tidy within your cabinet or keep them on display for a continental breakfast vibe right in your kitchen (in a cool way, of course).

The cups are made from durable porcelain, with a gently tapered foot and standard 3-ounce capacity. A big bonus? They come in the widest selection of shades on our list — in addition to white, you can shop colors ranging from rich jade and vibrant red to of-the-moment lilac.

Capacity: 3 ounces | Material: Porcelain | Dimensions: 3.1 x 2.1 inches

Best Stainless Steel

Real deal steel double-wall insulated espresso cups.

Stainless steel can be a polarizing topic in the coffee world. While it retains heat like a boss, some purists shy away from using it to sip their brew, noting that an unpleasant metallic taste can leech onto the palette, tainting the purity of their chosen blend. Still, these espresso cups were too good not to include and, unless you’re tasting for professional purposes, you probably won’t notice any flavor contamination of your own.

Like many of the options on our list, these steel cups are double-wall insulated for superior heat retention and feature a roomy square handle that any size hand can grasp onto comfortably. We love that they’re a bit more industrial in design than the other options on our list, making them an ideal choice for sipping on the go, camping, or your next trip up to the family cabin.

Capacity: 3 ounces | Material: Stainless steel with powder-coated finish | Dimensions: 2.5 x 2.2 inches

Professional baristas recommend the De'Longhi Double Walled Thermo Espresso Glasses . They get our vote for the best overall espresso cups. We love their double-walled borosilicate glass construction for superior insulation and their gently tapered shape for proper crema formation.

One of the first decisions you’ll come up against is which type of material to choose for your espresso cup. Ceramic and porcelain are among the most popular options, though glass vessels are increasing in popularity, especially among coffee connoisseurs that prefer a more modern look. Generally, double-walled borosilicate glass will give you the best heat retention, with ceramic and porcelain following close behind. Stainless steel is also a worthy option though, as mentioned, some pros prefer to avoid the material due to its ability to impact the flavor of a roast.

As any purist will tell you, espresso is not coffee — and therefore should not be treated as such. Smaller cups are key to a flavorful and manageable sip, and most espresso cups clock in between 2.5 and 3.5 ounces. While larger cups do exist, you should avoid anything above a 5-ounce capacity if you’re using a traditional espresso machine, as a cup that size likely won’t fit beneath the portafilter.

When shopping for the best espresso cups, there are a few key design elements you should pay close attention to. First and foremost? A tapered shape. While we did include a few straight-sided cups on our list, most professionals agree that the ideal shape for an espresso cup is one that’s slightly tapered at the base to help maximize the crema and increase the ease of sipping.

A comfortable handle is also key, so it helps if you can test a cup in person before committing. That being said, there are several espresso cups on the market with no handles at all, which is a modern and sleek design interpretation, as long as they boast added considerations (like a double wall) to ensure the cup doesn’t burn your hand as you hold it.

Beyond that, most other design elements — like stackability and the addition of saucers or trays — are entirely up to personal preference and will not impact the performance quality of your chosen espresso cups.

Listen closely: If you’re a person who avoids hand-washing dishes at all costs, we’re pretty sure you’re not going to start enjoying it now just because you bought a new set of espresso cups. Keep your cleaning preferences in mind as you shop, and look for models that allow for dishwasher use if that’s important to you. Many of the cups on our list can also be used in the microwave or refrigerator, should you need to reheat or cool down your espresso before sipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

According to Raub, most people enjoy hot drinks best when their temperature is between 120 and 150°F. “When coffee is hotter than 150°F, the heat can dull your tastebuds and prevent you from tasting some of the sweetness and complexities of the coffee’s flavor,” he explains.

“Likewise, if espresso cools too far below 120°F, it starts to change flavor and become more bitter and sour. A good espresso cup should be able to absorb some of the heat as the shot is poured into it while insulating the coffee to keep it near drinking temperature until it’s able to be enjoyed.”

“The ideal cup size for espresso is around 2.75 to 3.5 ounces,” says Raub. “A double espresso shot is around 2 ounces of volume, and having a smaller cup allows the coffee to retain more thermal mass. Larger cups will cause the espresso to spread out and cool down too quickly, and they’re also harder to sip from. Anything smaller than 2.75 ounces, however, and the cup risks overflowing.”

When it comes to the best espresso cup material for slow sippers (or those that just like their espresso pipping hot), Raub says you have two options: ceramic and glass. “Ceramic absorbs a lot of heat, but once it’s preheated, it can help insulate espresso for a long time,” he explains. “Another good option is double-walled glass, which insulates the espresso using the air between the two glass layers.”

“While it depends on the type of coffee used and how it was prepared, the average espresso shot has around 100 milligrams of caffeine,” says Raub. “A 12-ounce coffee, however, has around 150 to 200 milligrams of caffeine. So, while espresso is more concentrated, it generally has less caffeine than the average serving size of drip coffee.”

If you're on a morning commute, traveling or camping, you'll need one of the best travel mugs. These are essential for keeping your coffee warm, or your iced tea cool in warm conditions.

And while choosing a travel mug might seem easy to do, it can be tricky to know which one is suitable for your lifestyle. First, you'll need to consider what material you'd prefer? Durable materials range from steel, aluminum and plastic, to even ceramic. Also, if you'll be on the move, you'll need to know heavy it is to carry, heat retention, and overall style.

Finally, what's your budget? The best coffee travel mugs range from as little as $15 to $35. Or if you want to splurge, you could invest in more advanced types with their own battery, costing around $185.

Luckily, we’ve done all the hard work and found a great selection of the best travel mugs to suit any lifestyle, need and budget.

Best travel coffee mugs: MiiR Flip Traveler

1. MiiR Flip Traveler

Capacity: 16 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 2.75 x 7.25 inches | Weight: 10.2 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 9

The MiiR Flip Traveler is one of the best travel coffee mugs we’ve tested, offering a compact cup that will keep your liquids hot or cold for hours. Coming in 9 different colors, the double wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel body holds 16 fluid ounces of liquid. Although there are 12 and 20 fluid ounce capacities available too. The cup itself is very light, coming in it at 10.2 ounces.

The unique lid on top flips out when you need to drink and is secure when you need it locked in. But right after you drink, a small amount of liquid can gather on the lid, leaking to tiny droplets getting in places they shouldn’t. Also, if you don’t lock the lid firmly in place, it can spill. There’s nothing worse than having hot tea on your electronics because you didn’t make sure the lid was completely down.

It was one of the best we tested at keeping liquids consistently hot. Our testing started at 203 degrees Fahrenheit, only to drop to 178 after two hours, 154 after five hours, and 126 after 10 hours. Other cups paled in comparison, with the MiiR outclassing them in the category that is, literally and figuratively, the hottest.

Washing the cup is super simple and the lid doesn’t need to be taken apart to be put in the dishwasher. The whole cup is fairly durable and comfortable to hold. Overall, MiiR offers a fantastic travel mug with few downsides, keeping everything cool and on the inside. Give it a try if you are looking for a mug that offers everything you’d need.

Best travel coffee mugs: Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug

2. Stanley Classic Trigger Action Travel Mug

Best budget and best durable

Capacity: 16 fluid ounces | Dimensions: ‎2.9 x 8.9 inches | Weight: 8 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 18

Stanley is a brand built for rugged adventures and their Trigger Action Travel Mug is no exception. The strong, durable exterior claims that it has survived a bullet so it should be able to handle whatever you can throw at it. Made of stainless steel, the double-wall vacuum insulation creates a sturdy mug that weighs 12.8 ounces and holds 16 ounces, making it one of the heaviest we reviewed. A 20 ounce capacity is available too, which will no doubt weigh even more — we tested the 16 ounce capacity.

The lid is also built to last, having a unique trigger system that lets you take a sip by just pressing the button. Though the lid is useful, it does tend to leave a bit of water in the mouthpiece if you close it too quickly. But other than the occasional dribble, it won’t leak even when turned upside down and severely shaken. The whole cup is dishwasher safe, but you might want to think twice about taking apart the lid. It's a bit difficult to reassemble, especially when you haven’t rebuilt it before.

It kept the heat in fairly well, starting at 204 degrees Fahrenheit, dropping to 176 at two hours, 152 at five, and 125 hours at 10. But when it does have a hot liquid in it, the heat only breaks through a bit allowing you to hold even scolding beverages without a problem.

While the MSRP is $25, it can often be found for $17.50, so you are getting one of the best travel coffee mugs out there for a great price. Even if you aren’t the adventurous type and just need something to shove in your cup holder that won’t tip over, then Stanley is your guy.

Best travel coffee mugs: Hydro Flask Coffee with Flex Sip Lid

3. Hydro Flask Coffee with Flex Sip Lid

Capacity: 20 fluid ounces | Dimensions: ‎2.9 x 9.3 inches | Weight: 13.2 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 14

Hydro Flask is one of the most popular brands for travel mugs and cups for a very good reason. Available in multiple sizes, from 12 to 40 ounces, and in 11 colors, this travel mug features double-wall vacuum insulation to keep your drinks at the right temperature for hours. The stainless steel bottle is durable, with paint that won’t chip from use.

What really makes this mug different from the competition is its unique lid. The top handle is great for taking it on the go, but when you unscrew it you see the real magic. To take a sip, just turn the lid counterclockwise to open the seal. When you want to take the whole lid apart to clean, just unscrew it in the opposite direction, revealing the intricate mechanism beneath. Keep in mind that getting it put back together can be a bit of a hassle or might take practice.

The cup is incredibly durable and lightweight, coming in at 11.6 ounces for the 20 ounce capacity. Though it lacks a rubber bottom, the cup is still comfortable to hold and stable. It's also great at keeping your drinks hot, falling from 202 degrees Fahrenheit to 172 after two hours, 145 after five, and 116 after 10. It's definitely one of the more unique-looking cups we’ve tested, but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular. Expert engineering and craftsmanship put it at the top of our list. This is why it’s one of the best travel coffee mugs.

Best travel coffee mugs: THERMOS Stainless King Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug

4. THERMOS Stainless King Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug

Capacity: 16 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 3.3 x 7.6 inches | Weight: 15.7 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 8

Thermos is a brand that has become synonymous with quality travel mugs, and the Stainless King is truly a wonderful option. Made of stainless steel, this vacuum-insulated cup is dishwasher safe and should fit in most cup holders. The handle on the side makes holding the cup easy and the outside stays cool even when hot liquids are inside. It is available in four different colors and holds 16 fluid ounces of liquid.

The lid is expertly crafted and won’t leak no matter how many times it's turned over or shaken. But it does have to be completely closed to work, just a little bit of an opening and the cup will spill out whatever is inside.

To open the lid, just turn the nozzle counter-clockwise revealing the “open” label on the lid. When it's closed, the lid creates a vacuum seal that keeps everything nice and hot. There’s even a small hook on the bottom of the lid to hold your tea bag and make sure it doesn’t fall in. The lid doesn’t even need to be taken apart to clean.

The Thermos excels at keeping beverages hot, outperforming everything else we tested. Starting at 203 degrees Fahrenheit, it only dropped to 181 at two hours, 159 at five, and 131 at 10 hours, which we found was still too hot to drink. It earns a spot on our list as one of the best travel coffee mugs for this reason alone.

It is one of the heaviest cups we tested, coming in at a whopping 15.6 ounces. The only heavier mug was the Ello Jane Ceramic Travel Mug.

Best travel coffee mugs: Yeti Rambler

5. Yeti Rambler

Capacity: 20 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 3.5 x 7 inches | Weight: 12.8 ounches | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 34

Available in 10, 20 or 30 ounces (we tested the 20 oz capacity), the Yeti Rambler is unique in its design, offering a much stouter mug with enough room for your liquid inside. Cupholder-friendly and dishwasher safe, this double-wall vacuum-insulated mug is great for taking your cold or hot drinks on the go. Plus it’s available in a whopping 34 colors, so you can find whatever tone you want.

Because of its more round shape, it's better than some we’ve reviewed at not getting knocked over, though it doesn’t have a rubber bottom for grip. But even the mightiest wind should allow the Yeti to stay upright.

The lid is simple but effective when kept upright. You can slide it up to take a sip and then slide it back down to seal it. The slide requires a bit of pressure for it to get opened, so it shouldn’t just flop open and spill what's inside. But you shouldn’t just place this cup in your bag because it is possible for it to spill. The lid does not screw on and only has a rubber circle keeping it in place. With enough shaking or momentum, the lid will pop off and won’t have an airtight seal when turned upside down.

It's also a bit dangerous to drink while hot. We found that while testing the outer ring on the lid retains heat a bit too well and was too hot to touch. The cup itself retains heat well enough, starting at 204 degrees Fahrenheit and going to 166 after two hours, 136 after five, and 108 after ten.

But if you aren’t going on any backpack adventures and just want a drink to keep warm, then the Yeti is a great option.

Best travel coffee mugs: Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug

6. Ember Temperature Control Travel Mug

Capacity: 12 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 3 x 8 inches | Weight: 38.4 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: No | Colors available: 2

Having an electronic travel mug that costs $185 might seem a bit extra, but the Ember makes it seem absolutely reasonable. The mug has an internal battery and can keep a drink at the same consistent temperature for three hours on a single charge. All you have to do is tap the center to reveal icons and set it to your desired temperature.

It's packed full of smart features, which is why it’s one of the best travel coffee mugs, like Bluetooth that connects it to your phone to set the temperature and light that tells you when the cup needs charging. It also has an app, which is simple to use and works flawlessly, showing the battery level and temperature of the beverage (but it does need to be reconnected after every use). To charge it, all you have to do is place the cup on the included stand and it should be ready to go in just a few hours. We set the temperature to 136 degrees Fahrenheit after starting at 199, it managed to stay the same for the whole 10-hour period.

The lid is also a marvel of engineering- all you have to do is press down whenever you want to drink to create a small circle of liquid to flow through. Even when shaken, the liquid didn’t escape and stayed inside the remarkable metal cylinder. Some liquid might stay around the lid after you take a sip, so keep that in mind.

It’s also very durable and has a rubber-coated bottom to keep it from spilling over. It might be a great travel mug, but other options can do what it does without the hefty price tag. There’s no need to over-engineer a cup that’s worked fine before. It’s fairly lightweight,  coming in at 12 ounces and holding 12 fluid ounces. Being hand wash only is a drawback to boot as well.

Best travel coffee mugs: Teabloom

7. Teabloom

Capacity: 16 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 2.5 x 9 inches | Weight: 15.2 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 5

The Teabloom tumbler allows you to make teas on the go with everything inside the bottle. Unlike a lot of other travel mugs, this long but elegant bottle comes with a metal diffuser with its own handle that you can throw your favorite tea blend or coffee right inside. Holding 16 fluid ounces, it's made of stainless steel and brushed with a metallic exterior that stood up to the wear and tear of everyday use and weighs 15.2 ounces.

The tumbler is very thin and can be a bit wobbly. It doesn’t have a rubber grip and it's tall but the thin facade can cause it to get knocked down with just a little bit of force. But it will fit in almost every cup holder snugly, without any worry of it flying out.

The lid is a simple screw-on top with a rubber ring that easily stops it from leaking even when shaken upside down. We found that even with the lid not screwed on completely all the way, the cup did not spill any water.

It also retained heat very well. When you put it in high-temperature beverages you can feel the heat on the side but it is definitely not too hot to touch. Out of all the travel mugs we tested without its own battery, the Teabloom held heat the longest, starting at 203 degrees Fahrenheit, and falling to 179 at two hours, 154 at five hours, and 126 at ten hours. It's by far one of the best travel coffee mugs to store hot liquid in, the fact it can make tea, coffee, or infused fruit water is just a plus.

Best travel coffee mugs: bioGo 16 oz Reusable Coffee Cups

8. bioGo 16 oz Reusable Coffee Cups

Capacity: 16 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 3.6 x 7 inches | Weight: 6.4 ounces | Material: Rice husk | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 8

The bioGo Reusable Coffee Cup is simplistic but offers everything you’d need in a travel mug. Available in eight colors, it's made of recycled rice husks making them better for the environment. They also fit in cup holders and have a padded bottom to stop the cup from falling over.

It's also remarkably light; the model we tested weighs 6.2 ounces while still holding 16 fluid ounces. Although a 13 ounce capacity is also available. That light nature does make it feel a bit flimsy, but it held up to being knocked around just as well as other stainless steel mugs we tested. The cup is dishwasher safe and won’t break apart after multiple uses.

The screw-on lid is simple but effective. The hole on top has a plastic stopper that can be flipped in or out, which effectively keeps liquids inside. No matter how shaken or flipped upside down, the cup did not leak. The lid closer did not move once it was locked in place, but when the piece came out of the hole it did flop around.

Though it's a very pretty and stylish cup, it didn’t retain heat as well as a lot of the other mugs we tested. Starting at 202 degrees, it dropped quickly to 118 by two hours, 90 by five, and room temperature by 10. The whole cup became extremely warm on the outside, starting out at 125 degrees making it too hot to touch. If you need a mug that's safe for the environment and that you don’t need to hold hot beverages for long periods, then give this bioGo a shot. The environmentally friendly aspects make it one of the best travel coffee mugs.

Best travel coffee mugs: Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug

9. Contigo West Loop Stainless Steel Vacuum-Insulated Travel Mug

Capacity: 16 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 3.56 x 7.75 inches | Weight: 6.9 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: No | Colors available: 13

The Contigo West Loop Travel Mug has a gorgeous and unique shape that is durable enough to last. Made of stainless steel and its own patented Thermalock insulation, drinks stay hot or cold for hours inside. The shape makes it stand out from other travel mugs out there while still being slim enough to fit in most car cup holders. It holds 16 ounces of fluid and weighs 6.9 ounces. A 20 ounce capacity is also available, but we tested the smaller model.

The lid opens with a button press on the side, allowing any liquid to flow without issue. Even when shaken and held upside down, nothing escaped. To make sure nothing escapes, there’s a fantastic locking feature where all you have to do is press down on a button on top to make sure the lid can’t open. So when you place the mug in your bag, the button won’t accidentally get pressed and spill everywhere.

The odd shape does have it wobble a bit when tapped and it lacks rubber grips on the bottom, so it can fall. But it is still quite durable so even a tumble shouldn’t crack the exterior. The whole cup is dishwasher safe and the locking lid does not require disassembly to clean.

When filled with hot liquid, we found that the plastic lid coated in rubber got very hot and couldn’t be touched at max heat. But it did hold heat tolerably, starting at 204 degrees Fahrenheit and failing to 166 at two hours, 137 at five, and 111 at 10. Other travel mugs insulated a bit more consistently, but the Contigo still earned a recommendation, which is why it makes the list as one of the best travel coffee mugs.

Best travel coffee mugs: Ello Campy Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug

10. Ello Campy Vacuum Insulated Travel Mug

Capacity: 18 fluid ounces | Dimensions: 4.4 x 6.9 inches | Weight: 5.3 ounces | Material: Stainless steel | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 9

The Ello Campy Travel Mug is a simple, yet truly effective, liquid container. Its sleek metallic exterior hides a vacuum-insulated interior that keeps beverages cold or hot hours after use. That hard body makes it incredibly durable, though the plastic lid may not be able to handle the most aggressive of use.

The handle is coated in cork inside, helping you keep your grip and not burn yourself when going for a drink. The large handle makes it impossible for it to fit firmly in most car cup holders, especially any that are very deep. But it does make the cup look aesthetically pleasing and simple to use if you’d rather grasp a handle.

The screw-on lid is a bit more than just a simple piece of plastic, using a unique flipping mechanism to look the cup in place. Hot liquids made the lid too hot to touch and drink. It's also just a simple push button that can easily be knocked open without you noticing. This cup can’t be placed in a bag because it will spill everywhere. But it won’t leak when turned upside down as long as the lid is positioned correctly.

The whole cup is fairly good at keeping liquids hot, starting at 203 degrees Fahrenheit it fell to 171 at two hours, 142 at five, and 113 at 10. That puts it alongside a lot of the other cups we tested with vacuum insulation. Overall, it's great as long as you don’t try to drink scolding hot beverages. The model tested holds 18 ounces and weighs 5.3 ounces, but a smaller 11 ounce design is also available.

Best travel coffee mugs: Ello Jane Ceramic Travel Mug

11. Ello Jane Ceramic Travel Mug

Capacity: 18 fluid ounces | Dimensions: ‎3.5 x 6.5 inches | Weight: 24.7 ounces | Material: Ceramic | Dishwasher safe: Yes | Colors available: 5

The Ello Jane Ceramic Travel Mug is elegant with a timeless look, capturing the vibe of a cozy summer cottage somewhere in the wilderness. With a thick rubber bottom, the mug stays firmly planted when placed down and won't jiggle too much unless you try to knock it over. Being made of ceramic, we imagine that it's not as durable as other steel options (though we didn’t intentionally try to break it).

The handle on the side makes it comfortable to hold, though it is a fairly wide mug that won’t fit in most cup car holders. You can fill it with 18 fluid ounces of liquid and clean it in the dishwasher.

The top lid is a thin piece of plastic that you can shift up and down to take a drink. The lid is most certainly not leakproof and does not offer an airtight seal. If you just flip it over, the liquid will come gushing out, potentially with the lid as well. The lid is not screwed on and has no rubber gasket and is only held in place by a thin rubber bit around the lid.

It’s also not very good at retaining heat. It started at 199 degrees Fahrenheit and went down to 115 in just two hours. Like the Tupkee Glass Tumbler, the cup reached room temperature in just five hours. It's a much better indoor mug than a travel one, offering a unique option that just isn’t as stable as others on this list. The mug is also quite heavy, coming in at 22 ounces.

How we test

We put these travel mugs through rigorous testing for durability, heat retention, and comfort. First, we gave a score to every mug based on holding capacity, comfort to hold, stability, ease of opening, ease of cleaning, weight, and quality.

Best travel coffee mugs: Thermos mug shown above sink

Then we performed a test to see if it could hold liquid while turned upside down, without spilling a drop. We filled each cup to its maximum amount and held it upside down for five seconds. Then we noted which cups leaked and spilled onto the countertop. Most mugs managed to stay tight-lipped, while others leaked their insides everywhere. After a quick wipe-down of each mug, we moved on to the next step.

Best travel coffee mugs: Ello Jane Ceramic Travel Mug, Ember and Thermos shown on counter with digital thermometer testing liquid temperature.

Then we tested each mug's ability to retain heat. We filled each cup at the same time with boiling water and checked its temperature with a digital instant-read thermometer at two, five, and 10 hours. To check the inside temperature, we opened the top and placed a thermometer with a rod inside just long enough to get the recording without leaking much heat. Then, we closed the lid as quickly as possible before moving onto the next one.

How to choose the best travel mug

Material A travel mug can be made of stainless steel, plastic, ceramic, or glass. If you need a more durable mug, you should find one made of a tougher material like steel or plastic. These tougher mugs are also much better at retaining heat, with some having a vacuum insulation that keeps heat from escaping.

Durability Steel and plastic mugs are incredibly durable, able to withstand rigorous outdoor activity or time spent knocking around in a backpack. Mugs with rubber bottoms are also better at staying upright and not just falling over. If you are looking for a mug you can take on the road, it needs to be both durable and practical to use.

Size Most travel mugs are between 12 and 20 ounces, with 16 and 18 being the sweet spot. Most are slim enough to fit inside your average car coffee cup holder, while being snug enough to not just bounce around inside. If you are looking for a good sized mug, then aim for one that's around eight to ten inches in height.

How easy is to clean Ideally, you should wash or rinse out your travel mugs straight after use, to prevent any grimy build-up inside. If you want to remove odors, one tip is to add  ½ cup of vinegar before adding 1tbsp baking soda into the travel mug. Allow it to soak in the solution overnight, and then rinse it with warm water. Make sure you rinse it well so that there are no traces of the solution/vinegar. This should have removed lingering smells.

How do you keep your beverage hot or cold? Whether you want to maximize the heat or chill factor of your drink, there are a few tips. For hot beverages, it's recommended to pour hot water into the mug, and let it sit for a couple of minutes. Then empty the mug, before adding your hot drink, and this should retain the temperature. The same applies for cold drinks, but you use ice cubes in the cold water instead.

12 Best Insulated, Leak-Proof Travel Coffee Mugs Of 2024, According To Coffee And Travel Experts

Because no one has time for lukewarm java.

travel coffee mugs

Of course, with so many kinds of travel mugs on the market, there are some must-have qualities to keep in mind while you shop, according to Jiyoon Han, CEO and founder of Bean & Bean Coffee Roasters :

  • Transportability: Can you take it with you and not worry about it spilling or leaking?
  • Weight and shape: Is it too bulky or too heavy to take with you on the go?
  • Temperature control: Will it keep your drink at the desired temperature for a long period of time?

Additionally, some mug materials will alter how your coffee tastes. Ceramic, for example, will keep coffee hot without altering the flavor. "In my coffee routine, I will typically heat up my ceramic mug or cup with hot water to bring up the temperature of the vessel before I pour my brew into it," says Han. "This helps maintain the hot temperature of the coffee for longer. Stainless steel can achieve a similar effect in keeping hot coffee hot for a while, but it may impart flavors into the coffee."

You may be tempted to buy the Frank Green travel mug because it comes in pretty shades, like this lilac purple, but it also gets an A+ for being so simple to use. Sandra McLemore , a travel expert and TV host who's traveled to over 90 countries, loves this mug because it keeps her coffee and tea hot for at least eight hours.

"Frank Green is my go-to brand. They have a unique lid with a push button that opens a small sip hole. When you push the button again, the cup is sealed. It comes in a bunch of different colors, and everyone in my family has their own with their name embossed on them," she says.

Whenever she isn't sipping coffee, McLemore says she also loves using it to keep her adult beverages cold.

You can't have a travel coffee mug list without featuring Contigo. The top-rated brand (with over 72,000 positive reviews on Amazon) is known for creating quality travel mugs that don't leak, while keeping beverages hot or cold for hours on end.

Countless reviewers are huge fans of how leak-proof they are, even if you drop them. "I like that I can trust it not to leak. If I throw it in my purse or backpack, it never leaks. My one-year-old plays with it and never gets into my hot coffee," wrote one customer on Amazon.

If you're looking for something that will let you know how hot or cold your coffee is, Alien Brews' travel mug will do just that. It has a double wall insulated vacuum that will keep your drink at the desired temperature for six to 12 hours. It also has a separator inside for tea bags, in case coffee isn't your thing.

"I’ve been using this mug for a couple weeks now and absolutely love it. It has a soft cozy feel to it with reliable features. I don’t have to worry about my hot coffees getting cold anymore, and it also works to keep my cold drinks cold!" wrote one reviewer. "The lid will show you an accurate temperature of your beverage. The mug is leak-proof, and it fits perfectly in my car’s cup holder."

Keri Baugh , a writer who runs Bon Voyage With Kids, a family travel blog, loves keeping her Yeti Rambler on hand. From travel mugs to coolers, the brand is known for their top-notch insulated products.

"It keeps my coffee nice and hot for a long time—well over an hour or so—which really makes it worth the investment," Baugh says. "The travel mug's lid also has four placement options, making it perfect for both righties and lefties. You can place it where it feels most comfortable for you to hold while sipping."

At first glance, this looks like a normal travel coffee cup, but nope. It's also an espresso maker. Since it isn't battery or electricity-powered, you can use coffee beans to have hot espresso on-the-go using its built-in cup.

Alex Mastin , founder of coffee education site HomeGrounds, loves using this whenever he's out hiking or camping. "The Picopresso makes espresso that's cafe quality. It's super lightweight, has a built-in cup, and makes delicious coffee. It's also very affordable," says Mastin.

For those who like to keep a day's supply of coffee on hand, this 32-ounce travel coffee mug is a great option. The insulated cup can hold any cold beverage you desire and is designed with a non-slip bottom, so you won't leave rings wherever you're sipping.

Many reviewers say they love that it's large without being too overwhelming. "I absolutely love the size of this cup! It’s not too huge, but it’s not too small, either. I drink my sweet tea everyday at work and this cup is perfect for it! I love the handle! It’s not small and fits perfectly in my hand!" said one customer.

Mr. Coffee Thermos & Thermal Travel Mug Gift Set

At less than $25 for this thermos and mug, you can't go wrong with this Mr. Coffee gift set. The thermos is made with a rubber coating that keeps coffee warm for hours without spilling. Whenever you (or whoever you give this to) are ready, just pour your coffee into the included mug. You can create your own café experience, no matter where you are.

One reviewer said that the shiny red color of these makes them the perfect gift, while another said it was perfect for work days. "Exactly what I was looking for my mornings at work!" they wrote.

Your mug collection isn't complete without a HydroFlask. The brand is also a fave of Baugh's because the tumblers are made with double-wall vacuum insulation to keep your beverage warm and a press-in lid that further traps in heat while preventing spills. Hydroflasks are also dishwasher-safe, so you can throw them into the wash without fear.

Reviewers are big fans of how comfy it feels to hold the travel cup. "I love this cup! I bought a second one for my husband and he raves about it to all his friends. This cup is very comfortable in your hand which is really nice. I have let a few people use the cup and they all comment on how comfortable it is to hold the cup," said one customer.

Whenever Mastin is traveling to a hotel, he loves bringing the Zojirushi thermos with him. It's made with a two-step lid release process to keep excess condensation from spilling. It's also designed with a safety lock that prevents the lid from accidentally opening.

"They make incredibly high-quality coffee thermoses, and they keep coffee hot for the entire day. I can fill it at 7 a.m. and still have a piping hot drink at 5 p.m. They're also incredibly durable and are very much a 'buy it for life' type purchase," he says.

Alicia Cintron, who owns a travel planning company and considers herself a full-time digital nomad, loves the Stojo Cup because it's a space saver in addition to being leak-proof and dishwasher-safe. "This cup is so easy to travel with and can be used for a commute, on a hike, wherever! And when you are done, you can wash it out, collapse it, stow it away, and carry on with your day," she says.

At just $15, it's also very affordable, and made with a sleek design. You can grab the silicone cup in shades like this pink, mint green, and denim blue.

IRON °FLASK Grip Coffee Mug

Grip Coffee Mug

This coffee mug from Iron Flask is made with BPA-free stainless steel that's non-toxic, so you should hand wash it only. But the extra work is worth the quality coffee you'll be drinking from this travel mug. The cup is made with double-wall insulation, so your thermos won't sweat and get your stuff wet. The clear lid is also leak-proof.

This Iron Flask travel mug will keep your beverages cold for 18 hours, and hot for four. With over 5,000 positive reviews on Amazon, it's a top-rated pick. "I have several Iron Flask water bottles, tumblers, and travel mugs and I love them. The leak-proof lids work great for me as I throw them in my backpack and walk to work. Never once had a leak. These mugs keep liquid hot for a very long time and they are all so pretty," said one customer.

MiiR Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

Vacuum Insulated Tumbler

If you want to drink your coffee and rest easy knowing you're also helping the environment, try this vacuum tumbler from MiiR. Their in-house production stems from their dedication to reducing emissions, maximizing product lifespans, and adhering to ethical product manufacturing.

We’ve provided the above travel coffee maker reviews to help you in your search for the perfect coffee maker, but if you want to keep shopping around, here are some things to know and pointers on how to choose the best travel coffee maker.

travel coffee maker

The first question to ask yourself is: how much coffee do I need? Second question: how many people do I need to provide coffee for? If you’re a solo traveler, getting a large travel coffee maker likely isn’t necessary. If you’re traveling in a big group – and everyone wants to enjoy their cup of coffee at relatively the same time – a small coffee maker won’t cut it. Brewing multiple batches to accommodate everyone will quickly become cumbersome and annoying.

Consider not just the size of the coffee maker itself but also the brewing capacity and weight. Obviously, the larger the contraption, the more it will weigh and the bulkier it will be to pack away. For a backpacker, this weight and space make a considerable difference. Whereas, for car camping, the weight of a medium-to-large travel coffee maker that has greater brewing capacity won’t be as big of a deterrent.

travel coffee maker

When choosing the best travel coffee maker for you, it’s important to consider how picky you are about the taste and quality of your coffee. Drip units, espresso makers and French press produce a cup of coffee that tastes different – even if you use the same type of coffee. The quality of the beans matter too, but not all coffee makers yield the same results.

Typically, a drip unit makes a more basic, less-intense cup of joe. French press and espresso machines usually result in a tastier and overall better quality cup of coffee. Consider what you prefer and what you’re used to and choose your coffee maker style accordingly.

Toughness

best travel coffee maker

How well is the device going to do after long-term abuse on the road? Consider how long you want (and need) your travel coffee maker to last and what you’re using it for. More economical coffee makers are usually plastic or include plastic parts – and are less durable. While stainless steel units are tougher and will last longer.

If you’re a backpacker that needs a coffee-making unit that will fold down and won’t break the bank, expect to get a plastic device that will do the trick for that trip. Whether or not it survives the abuse on the road can’t be guaranteed. For camping nomads that enjoy regular and frequent camping trips, investing in a tough, durable stainless steel travel coffee maker is probably the better way to go.

Parts vs Simplicity

travel coffee maker

Also consider this question: does the device have a lot of parts that could break? If so, can they be easily replaced? The more parts, the more likely your chances of losing or breaking a piece while on your travels.

If you’re really attached to your travel coffee maker – and finding replacement parts is fairly quick and simple – then the extra hassle of multiple parts could be worth it. But, if your travel style tends to be less organized and rugged, you should consider getting a simple device with as few extra parts as possible.

Eco-Friendly

rei half dome 2 tent

Does the device require filters? Many espresso units do not require filters and some coffee presses have a silicone filter built-in – however – some do require paper filters. Be sure to know what the requirements are. Take the opportunity to bash the Keurig/Nespresso pods as an extreme environmental danger.

The more dependence your unit has on paper filters, the more wasteful and less eco-friendly it is. A device that has a reusable filter – or doesn’t require a filter at all – is much better for the environment. As a nature-loving nomad, leaving the smallest carbon footprint possible is always more ideal.

Price

How often will you use your travel coffee maker? If the answer is often, then buying a high-quality one – or the one you really want – will be worth splashing out a little extra cash for. Most travel units aren’t that expensive to begin with, and getting the quality cup of java you need to kickstart your travel days the right way will be worth it.

Also, think about the money you save by making your own coffee while traveling versus buying individual cups at cafes. With extended and frequent use, the unit will eventually pay for itself.

Power vs No Power

best tents for backpacking

Typically, one should always go for a travel coffee maker that does not require electricity – that is why there are no powered coffee makers on our list. This is especially true for backcountry campers or backpackers who enjoy spending time the most remote places possible. Not having to find or bring along an extra source of electricity to power up your coffee machine will save a lot of hassle.

There are plenty of good travel coffee makers that produce delicious, high-quality coffee that don’t require power. We highly recommend sticking to those when making your final selection.

Digital nomad in Portugal. Coffee, laptop and work in Lagos.

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

Is the AeroPress the best coffee maker?

The AeroPress is a great coffee maker for one cup of coffee, but we’re big fans of the GSI Outdoors Java Press . They both offer great value, but the Java press has a bigger capacity.

What do you need to consider when choosing a coffee maker?

Keep these key features in mind: 1. Size, Quality and Toughness 2. Parts and Simplicity 3. Price

What is the best travel coffee maker for solo travellers?

Since a single person won’t need endless ounces of coffee (at least it’s not recommended), the AeroPress Go Travel Coffee Press is the perfect choice for solo travellers.

What is the best travel coffee maker for large groups?

When travelling with your friends, opt for the GSI Outdoors Glacier Stainless Steel 14-Cup Percolator . It’s got a liquid capacity of 112 fl.oz. which is plenty enough for multiple backpackers.

A travel coffee maker mounted to a hiking backpack

There are countless travel and portable coffee makers on the market, but we’ve handpicked the best ones to make your life easier. You may prefer a particular coffee-brewing method, and just because you are traveling doesn’t mean you should have to sacrifice coffee made the way you like it. No matter what you’re looking for in a travel coffee maker, from espresso machines to French presses, we’ve got you covered. Read on for our list of the 10 best.

This means you don’t have to pack a separate coffee maker or paper filters, saving valuable space in your luggage. It’s made of a stainless steel double-wall design that keeps coffee piping hot, so be careful! It’s quick and easy to use, which is great for travel. It even comes in a few bold color choices.

On the negative side, this isn’t the best cup for daily use. That’s fine if you plan to use it just for travel, but the durability is questionable. The filter breaks down over time, and the lid tends to be flimsy.

To conclude, we think this is the best portable French press coffee maker. Take it on your next trip and see what you think!

  • Brews in a travel cup
  • Insulated stainless steel cup keeps coffee hot
  • Available in various colors
  • Quick and easy to use
  • Not as durable; breaks down over time
  • 3. Black+Decker Portable Single Serve Coffee Maker – Best Value

The Black + Decker Single Serve is another great portable coffee maker that brews right in the travel cup. It’s an auto-drip maker, but its compact design makes it ideal for travel and small spaces ( like a dorm room ). A permanent filter is included, so you don’t have to worry about disposing of or buying paper filters. It’s also very inexpensive.

It does have a couple of problems, however. It comes with a plastic travel cup, which won’t keep your coffee hot for long. You can upgrade to any 16-ounce travel mug, but that’s an added expense. It’s also not very durable and shouldn’t be used for daily use.

  • Compact design
  • Permanent filter
  • Plastic travel cup
  • Not very durable

  • 4. Keurig K-Mini – Best Travel K-Cup Coffee Maker

Keurig is the manufacturer of popular K-Cup makers , so it makes sense to include their most travel-friendly model on this list. The Keurig K-Mini is extremely compact and lightweight; it’s only 4.5 inches wide, and it weighs a little less than five pounds. It comes in a variety of colors, and it has a compartment for K-Cup storage. For more potent cups of coffee, it has a strong brew option.

If you’re the type of person who likes more than one cup of coffee in the morning, then this design might get a little tedious, since the water reservoir can only hold up to 12 ounces. Other than the strong brew option and a couple of size options, this brewer doesn’t have any extra features.

Read our full review of the Keurig Mini here!

  • Extremely compact and lightweight
  • Available in several colors
  • Strong brew option
  • Only enough water for one cup of coffee
  • No extra features
  • 5. GSI Portable Portable Pour-Over Coffee Brewer

The GSI Outdoors Java Drip is a great option for backpacking, camping, or boating. It collapses almost completely flat and is made of durable silicone. Fewer parts mean easy cleanup, and it’s easy to use. Just insert a paper filter, place the silicone disc over your mug or travel cup, and use the pour-over coffee-making method with hot water. It’s big enough to use a regular-size coffee filter, so it can handle up to twelve cups of coffee.

Even though the silicone makes it durable and easy to clean, it has a detectable smell, especially right out of the box. This can affect the taste of your coffee. You’ll also need paper filters, which are another thing to purchase, take up space in your bag, and dispose of.

  • Collapsible, lightweight design
  • Easy to clean and use
  • Brews 1-12 cups of coffee
  • Silicone can affect the taste of coffee
  • Paper filters needed
  • 6. Wacaco Minipresso Portable Travel Espresso Maker

If you can’t live without espresso while you’re traveling, especially in situations where you won’t have access to electricity, the Wacaco Minipresso is a great choice. All of its parts stack together into one unit, so it’s very compact. It comes in at 0.8 lbs, which is very light. It’s entirely manually operated via a pumping mechanism, so you don’t have to worry about batteries or finding an outlet.

However, with eight BARs of pressure, it’s just under the nine BARs needed for espresso. This means that the grounds are a bit under-extracted. Quite a bit of hand strength is needed for the pump, and even though the company’s video shows it being operated with only one hand, many people will need to use both. All those parts also mean it’s harder to clean, and some will require air-drying.

Read our full review of the Wacaco Minipresso here! (We loved it).

  • Compact and lightweight
  • Manually operated
  • Harder to clean
  • Espresso is under-extracted
  • Hand strength required
  • 7. Coffee Gator Travel Pour-Over Coffee Brewer Mug

The Coffee Gator Pour Over Brewer Mug is another option for pour-over brewing, where you can brew directly into the included travel mug. It’s made of vacuum-insulated stainless steel, and it has a copper lining to keep your coffee hotter longer. The metal filter means you don’t have to buy paper filters or have them take up space in your luggage. It comes in a range of colors, and it’s easy to use.

There are a few things that keep it from the top of the list, however. It has a flimsy lid, so the durability is questionable. The lid also has a few small parts, making it difficult to clean. This wouldn’t be a good choice for daily use, as the filter appeared to break down over time.

  • Brews right in the travel mug
  • Made of quality materials to keep coffee hot
  • Metal filter
  • Available in a variety of colors
  • Difficult to clean
  • Questionable durability
  • Filter breaks down over time
  • 8. Bialetti Portable Stovetop Coffee Maker

This is the compact, travel-friendly version of the Bialetti Moka pot you love. It’s extremely portable because it’s entirely self-contained. Just add ground coffee and water. The brew time is fast at under five minutes, and it’s easy to clean.

One major issue, however, is that you’ll need access to a stovetop or campfire. That’s not a problem if you’re staying in a hotel suite with a kitchen or traveling in an RV , but it wouldn’t be the best travel coffee maker choice for a regular hotel room, for example. It’s also a bit heavier than some of the other options, at a little more than a pound. It only makes one small cup, so it’s a bit of a pain if you want multiple cups of coffee.

  • Entirely self-contained
  • Easy to clean
  • Fast brew time
  • Requires access to a stovetop or fire
  • On the heavier side
  • Only makes one small cup
  • 9. Presto MyJo Single Cup Travel Coffee-Maker

The Presto MyJo is another good choice for camping, backpacking, or other traveling activity where you don’t have access to electricity. If you love the convenience of a K-Cup brewer, this is the travel coffee maker for you. It uses K-Cups, but it also comes with a reusable coffee filter that you can fill with your own ground coffee. The design is extremely compact, and it weighs less than a pound.

Unfortunately, the reusable filter is also pretty delicate, and it’s custom-made by Presto, so you have to order it from the company. The MyJo isn’t very durable, and the gasket leaks easily if you don’t have it properly sealed. It may also be convenient that no electricity is needed, but it requires a lot of force to pump the water through.

  • Extremely compact design
  • K-Cup compatible
  • Reusable coffee filter included
  • Reusable coffee filter is delicate
  • Tends to leak
  • Takes a lot of force to pump water
  • 10. Takeya Cold Brew Iced Coffee Maker

Can’t live without your iced coffee , even when traveling? Then the Takeya Cold Brew is the coffee maker for you. It’s easy to use; you only need coffee grounds and cold water. This design is especially compact and lightweight, at just under 10 ounces.

However, the handle is flimsy, and the lid tends to leak if you aren’t careful. The filter also never forms a perfect seal, so grounds always manage to escape into the coffee. Because of this, the overall design doesn’t seem very durable. It’s fine for occasional travel use, but it wouldn’t be a good choice for daily use.

  • Lightweight
  • Filter allows coffee grounds to escape
  • Tends to be flimsy
  • Prone to leaks
  • Final Thoughts – Finding the Best Travel Coffee Maker

We think Aeropress is the best travel coffee maker of the year. It’s lightweight and compact enough for air travel, and the fact that it doesn’t require electricity makes it ideal for camping. It makes both American-style coffee and espresso, so it can suit the tastes of almost everyone.

If you can’t leave home without your French press, then the Bodum Travel Press is the best for travel. The fact that it brews directly in the travel mug makes it great for travel, and it won’t take up much space in your luggage.

If you’re on a budget, Black + Decker’s Single-Serve Coffeemaker is inexpensive and also brews right in the travel mug. This is an auto-drip model that’s easy to use and familiar to just about everyone.

For those who love the convenience and efficiency of a K-Cup coffee maker, the Keurig K-Mini is perfect to take along. Its compact design ensures it won’t take up much space, while still giving you the speed and efficiency you’ve come to expect from a single-serve coffee maker.

Whether you prefer a cup of espresso or love the convenience of a K-Cup, we hope our reviews helped you find the travel coffee maker to suit your needs. We truly hope that our guide helps you find the best portable coffee maker for your tastebuds. Happy brewing!

That's why the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances and Innovation Lab tested Nespresso machines for ease of use and performance to help you choose the best one. We've been testing coffee makers for over a decade including drip coffee makers , single-serve coffee machines , French press coffee makers , latte machines , cold brew coffee makers and coffee makers with grinders to help you make the best cup of coffee at home.

The VertuoPlus perfectly balances features, price and design, making it the best Nespresso machine for most people. It's also one of the most affordable Nespresso machines out there, so it's a good entry for consumers who are interested in trying out this type of appliance.

Despite the budget-friendly price point, this coffee maker is highly functional. Because it’s part of the VertuoLine, it can make both coffee and espresso, and it uses barcodes on each specially-designed capsule to brew the right strength and volume every time.

Choose from five drink types: espresso, double espresso, gran lungo, mug and alto. Then let the machine do the work — there's nothing to think about, thanks to that automatic detection of capsule type. For a little something extra, you can always use the brand’s Aeroccino milk frother — the best milk frother we’ve tested — in tandem with the machine.

In our tests, every cup of coffee came out hot and well-rounded with a luxurious, thick crema. We also liked that there's one top-facing button that controls everything: power, rinsing and brewing. Adding to the convenience, the unit is relatively compact, the position of the water tank can be adjusted to accommodate any counter space and the lid opens and closes with one touch of the lever.

If there's any downside, it's that this Nespresso machine is only compatible with Nespresso Vertuo pods, but this isn't unique to this particular model, as the different types of pods aren't interchangeable.

Dimensions : 16.88" x 5.59" x 12.79" | Capsules: Vertuo | Milk frother: No | Water tank capacity: 60 oz

The latest in the VertuoLine, the Vertuo Pop+ is a stylish coffee and espresso machine that comes in a rainbow of seven colors such as pacific blue, spicy red, aqua mint, mango yellow and more. This compact machine has a slim profile so it doesn't take up too much counter space. It offers a choice of 5-, 8- and 12-ounce coffees as well as single or double espressos. Plus, it can brew both hot and cold beverages.

When we tested this at home, we found the small removable water tank easy to fill. The one-touch push button is simple and and the machine quickly heats up to quickly brew a cup. Like other Vertuo models, the machine reads the barcodes on the capsules to brew to the specific type of coffee inside so it's the right strength, volume and taste every time.

After brewing, it automatically shuts off when idle for two minutes. The biggest drawback we found? There's not a lot of space between the brewing spout and platform, so you're limited to shorter glasses which can be an issue for a large 12-ounce drink.

Dimensions : 8.6" x 14" x 10.4" | Capsules: Vertuo | Milk frother: No | Water tank capacity: 24.5 oz

The tiny-but-mighty Essenza Mini is an affordable Nespresso machine that consistently makes quality, full-bodied espresso with a nice crema. The super-compact design (at just over four inches wide!) forgoes bells and whistles for classic pod espresso. If you're satisfied with a solid espresso or lungo (with the option to remove the drip base for a bigger cup), you won't miss much else. Not to mention, it’s a great option if you don’t have much space or want to keep things simple.

This model is part of the original line of machines, so it achieves 19 bars of pressure when brewing. This means you may find the machine a bit louder than some other models, despite its small footprint.

Perhaps the biggest sacrifice, though, is the size of the water container. It's definitely on the smaller side, but our testers didn't mind refilling it for the freshest-tasting cups. On the upside, the machine does have an energy-saving component: It automatically shuts off after nine minutes of inactivity. Dimensions : 8" x 4.3" x 12.8" | Capsules: Original | Milk frother: No | Water tank capacity: 20.3 oz

With its classic Breville stainless steel design and matching milk jug, the Creatista Plus looks like a high-end machine — and it has the features to match. The integrated steam wand for milk frothing is perfect for making lattes and other drinks.

Despite this high level of functionality and execution, the machine is surprisingly easy to use. It comes equipped with an LCD menu that allows you to select from 11 different milk temperatures and eight milk froth textures. All you have to do to make the perfect hot beverage is choose your drink — ristretto, espresso, lungo, latte, cappuccino, flat white or latte macchiato — then select a size and pick a milk temperature and texture.

Because the Creatista Plus belongs to the original line, it is louder during the brewing process (thanks to those 19 bars of pressure) than the VertuoLine. It doesn’t work with VertuoLine pods or make regular coffee either.

Overall, it's one of the more expensive Nespresso models available. But our experts say it's a fantastic pick for anyone who loves their lattes and wants reliably delicious espresso from a beautiful machine.

Dimensions : 6.7" x 16.1" x 12.2" | Capsules: Original | Milk frother: Yes | Water tank capacity: 50 oz

For a top-of-the-line Nespresso machine, look no further than the Creatista Pro. This machine is similar to the Creatista Plus but with more features such as a dedicated hot water spout for tea and long blacks and a larger water reservoir. You can also customize the coffee volume, milk temperature and even the froth level and texture.

Our testers love that they could also save their custom drink preferences with specific milk volume and texture as presets. While it doesn't make regular coffee, this machine uses the original capsules for drink options including a ristretto, espresso, lungo, Americano, flat white, cappuccino, café latte and latte macchiato. You can also heat your milk and espresso at the same time so the espresso shot doesn't get cold waiting for the milk to froth.

It comes equipped with a LCD screen that displays pictures and text of the drink options. The beautiful stainless steel design is distinctly Breville. One thing to note: This machine is on the larger side to accommodate all the extra features.

Dimensions : 16.75" x 7.75" x 13" | Capsules: Original | Milk frother: Yes | Water tank capacity: 68 oz

It doesn't get much easier to make a cappuccino or latte macchiato than with the Gran Lattissima Nespresso machine. Load the capsule, then with one touch, the machine brews coffee, froths milk and pours it into your cup, making this a beginner-friendly frothing machine. Other drink options include ristretto, espresso, lungo, flat white, caffè latte, hot milk and hot foam.

The milk hopper is detachable and can be stored in the fridge for use another time. We love that the milk jug is dishwasher-safe, but our users found the milk frother attachment was a bit difficult to clean because it requires disassembling multiple components. The Gran Lattissima is easy to use with labeled buttons and an LED screen, although testers noticed it was somewhat inconsistent between drinks.

Dimensions : 7.99" x 14.44" x 10.86" | Capsules: Original | Milk frother: Yes | Water tank capacity: 34 oz

Although it’s not a true Nespresso machine, the Wacaco Nanopresso is the best non-electric alternative to a proper espresso machine we’ve seen .

This portable espresso maker has impressive power too. It can generate up to 18 bars of pressure with hand power alone, brewing a creamy espresso shot anywhere you also have access to hot water — even somewhere remote like a campground. You can use coffee grounds to make espresso, but you can also purchase this pod-adapter attachment , to use original Nespresso capsules for extra convenience.

Relative to its size, it is a pricey gadget — and it’s not the easiest to use without some practice — but it’s the go-to for travelers and adventurers who are serious about their espresso or Nespresso while traveling.

Dimensions : 2.83" x 3.03" x 7.28" | Capsules: Original capsules (adapter required) or ground coffee | Milk frother: No | Water tank capacity: 2.71 oz

How we test espresso and Nespresso machines

line up of three espresso cups with espresso on a white countertop surface, good housekeeping testing for best nespresso machines

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Kitchen Appliances Lab, we test Nespresso machines according to the methodology we use when testing espresso machines. We evaluate their ease of use, time to brew, consistency, taste and noise level. In our most recent test of espresso machines, we rounded up over 20 models, brewing more than 60 cups of espresso.

If the machine had a milk frother , we tested it with both skim and oat milks. While we haven't formally tested every single Nespresso machine in the Lab, we've selected many of our road-tested top picks. Here, we prioritized machines that balance useful features with price, that are easy to set up and use and brew consistent espresso time after time.

Most Nespresso models produce the same quality of espresso, but during taste tests, we assured each machine produced a hot, smooth cup of espresso that had depth and wasn't too bitter or acidic, plus had crema that was smooth without any noticeable big or small air bubbles.

What to look for when buying the best Nespresso machine

linebreak

Before you get brewing, you'll have to decide what type of machine best suits your needs. Some models, like those in the popular VertuoLine, make both coffee and espresso. Some have built-in milk frothers for creating the perfect latte or cappuccino. Others create more crema for a well-rounded espresso. Although almost all Nespresso models are simple to use and less expensive than other espresso machines, it’s important to consider the features that fit your needs before making the investment. Here's what to keep in mind:

✔️ Original vs. VertuoLine : To understand the differences between all the Nespresso models, you must first understand the difference between how the VertuoLine and the original series of machines operate.

  • Original machines , including the Creatista Series, the Essenza, the CitiZ and the Lattissima Series, produce espresso by forcing water through the top of a pod using 19 bars of pressure (much like a traditional espresso machine), eventually rupturing the foil at the bottom of the pod and allowing the espresso to flow out. Because the original machines operate more like real espresso machines, they can make espresso only, not coffee, and you should expect a more traditional level of crema. Original machines are also louder than VertuoLine machines because of this process.
  • VertuoLine machines , first introduced in 2014 to appeal to the North American market, use a different technology that Nespresso likes to call “centrifusion”: Water flows in through the top of the dome-shaped capsule, mixes with espresso through centrifugal force, and then flows out through 20 punctures on the side of the capsule. As a result of this centrifusion process, the VertuoLine machines produce espresso with a thick layer of crema, plus they also can make regular coffee.

✔️ Original capsules vs. Vertuo capsules: This is important to consider because you can’t swap pods between machine types. However, all pod types can be recycled through the Nespresso capsule recycling program . Here's the difference:

  • Original pods come in only one size. They are generally easier to find, less expensive and available in more varieties, although this may change. If you’re strictly an espresso fan and prefer a traditional level of crema, the original line will likely suit your needs.
  • Vertuo pods have custom barcodes that the machines read in order to automatically produce the right drink every time, making them very easy to use. Vertuo pods also come in different sizes, so your larger drinks won’t be diluted. If you’re looking to make a wide variety of coffee drinks and want a machine that’s very easy to use (and can make coffee!), a VertuoLine model is your best bet.

✔️ Milk frothers : Some Nespresso models, including the Creatista series and the Gran Lattissima, come with integrated steam wands for frothing milk. These are very convenient for those looking to make macchiatos, lattes, cappuccinos and other drinks with milk. However, these milk frothers can sometimes be difficult to clean and maintain. Nespresso also sells the Aeroccino , a separate milk frother that’s often bundled with their machines. If you want a café experience, you should consider choosing a model with an integrated frother. The Aeroccino doesn’t produce a “true” microfoam, but it performed great in our milk frother testing and prepares milk quickly and easily for your coffee and espresso. ✔️ Size : If you’re looking for a machine as small, powerful and refined as a shot of espresso itself, there are several compact options, including the Essenza Mini and CitiZ. These machines forgo extra features and big water reservoirs in order to remain small and lightweight. But if you want to make many drinks in a row or a larger cup of coffee for yourself, you’ll need to consider the larger, taller models. Make sure the machine you choose will fit under your cabinets and suit the kind of vessel you’ll be drinking your coffee from. ✔️ Manufacturer : Don’t be thrown off by the labels “by Breville” or “by De’Longhi” on different Nespresso models: Both companies have the rights to manufacture these machines, and neither necessarily makes a better one. The differences you’ll notice between manufacturers have more to do with design — for example, many of the Breville machines match the company’s usual stainless steel and brushed-stainless steel aesthetic.

How to use Nespresso machines

linebreak

Since Nespresso’s launch in 1986, the Swiss company has developed a range of sleek automatic home coffee and espresso machines that use a patented pod-based system. To operate a Nespresso machine, simply choose your favorite pod from their coffee or espresso offerings, pop it into the machine and press a button for a drink in seconds.

Which Nespresso Vertuo is the best?

linebreak

We love the Nespresso Vertuo Plus by De'Longhi which is our overall top pick for the best Nespresso machine. It's extremely easy to use and has a great price, making it great for first-time Nespresso users or those who want to purchase a new machine. It offers options for espresso or coffee with additional choices for double espresso, gran lungo, mug and alto.

What is the difference between Vertuo and VertuoPlus?

linebreak

The VertuoPlus is similar to the Vertuo with a few upgrades. The VertuoPlus has an adjustable water tank that swivels to left, right or behind the machine, so it accommodates most counter spaces. Another handy feature, it automatically opens and closes, as well as ejecting the capsule after it's finished brewing.

No matter which machine you choose , both have a computerized scanning system that reads the barcode on the Vertuo capsule and uses the Nespresso Centrifusion technology that relies on centrifugal force to brew espresso and coffee.
