FGSR Graduate Travel Awards, 2018

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) at the University of Alberta is pleased to offer FGSR Graduate Travel Awards. To enter, applicants must have a GPA of 2.7 or higher that based on the most recent 15 credits of graded coursework and be registered full-time in the program at the time of application.

The award is open to financially support graduate students who travel in the interests of disseminating their research results or developing their research. Travel award offer of financial support is intended to assist with the cost of travel expenses for students’ active participation at a conference or research trip.

Who May Eligible:

To eligible, the candidates must be following all the eligibility criteria:

  • An eligible student can only receive one graduate travel award during a graduate program. This includes master’s students transferring or who have transferred to a Ph.D. program.
  • Be registered full-time in their program at the time of application and at the time of proposed travel.
  • Have a GPA of 2.7 or higher, based on the most recent 15 credits of graded coursework (or closest approximation thereof) in their current program at the time of application
  • Students in a master’s degree program must have completed no more than four years in the master’s program at the time of travel.
  • If you are in a thesis-based program: at the time of application, you must have completed your preliminary coursework and other prerequisites (approximately the first two terms of your program and all grades must be final).
  • You must be actively engaged in thesis research ( by registering in full-time thesis credits. If you are in a course-based program: at the time of application, you must have completed at least two university terms of full-time coursework (grades must be final) in the program by the time you travel.
  • Course-based students are required to be registered full-time in each Fall and Winter term; spring/summer term registration is not required if full-time coursework was completed in the preceding Fall and Winter terms.
  • Students in a doctoral degree program must have completed no more than six years in the doctoral program at the time of travel. This includes master’s students who have transferred to a Ph.D. program.
  • At the time of application: You must have completed your preliminary coursework and other prerequisites completed your candidacy examination and are actively engaged in thesis research (registered in full-time thesis credits).

How to Apply & Competitions Rules:

  • To apply, you must submit all of the following documents by email to [email protected] from your ualberta.ca email account. You will receive an email to acknowledge receipt of your application.
  • Documents must be copies of the official originals (ex. print out of email, a copy of the letter, etc), and must include the organizations’ particulars (signatures, email address, organization logo, URL’s, etc.)
  • Do not copy and paste information into a Word document. Screenshots and jpag images will not be accepted.

Supporting Documents:

  • Documentation from the conference organizers confirming your poster or paper has been accepted for presentation OR a letter of invitation to participate in a panel discussion or to exhibit your work
  • Documentation from the conference organizers confirming your registration; the document should outline the cost for registration and what items are included in the registration fee (meals, accommodation, etc.).
  • You must still send confirmation of registration if there is no registration fee. Documentation confirming your acceptance/ invitation and registration must be in your name.
  • If your supervisor has submitted on your behalf and subsequently the documentation has been sent in their name, your supervisor must provide an explanatory memo to be included with your application.
  • Documentation from the organizers that confirms your participation to a data collection site, workshop, summer institute, etc.
  • Documentation that you paid the associated expenses (eg. registration fee) if any.
  • If the above documentation is not available, a letter of support from your University supervisor commenting on the significance of the trip for your research program.
  • The letter must outline the specific dates and location in which you are undertaking your research.
  • Variable, up to a maximum value of $1,500 depending on the estimate of eligible expenses provided by the student.
  • The FGSR will offer as many travel awards as the annual budget will support.

Please be aware that many awards from FGSR have a faculty internal deadline and you will not apply directly unless otherwise noted.

The University of Alberta award is open for Canadian students only.

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Doctoral Students :

In addition to the above eligibility requirements, an applicant’s travel must fall under one of two categories in order to be eligible for funding:

Conference Travel : A conference trip eligible for FGSR funding should be a highlight of a student’s program. Travel will involve the student’s attendance and active participation – by presenting a paper or poster, exhibiting their work, or participating in a panel discussion – at a major national or international research gathering.

Research Travel : You must be actively engaged in research-related activities at the designated location, and the nature of your trip must be to develop your own research (not your supervisor’s). Active participation is required during the specified time of travel and is to include collection, analyzation, or gathering of information/data for your research. Internships, exchange programs, and attendance in credited and non-credited courses are not eligible for research travel funding.

The following are examples of travel that would constitute a research trip:

  • Trips to field sites • Visits to off-campus research stations • Visits to archives, museums, and exhibits • Participation at a research workshop; the workshop must be interactive with other researchers and/or participants and teach relevant skills related to your research • Participation at a research training institute; the institute can be a wide variety of experiences related to your research, and be comprised of events, seminars, workshops, etc. • Travel to performance venues for performing art students to present their pieces, or to attend performances relevant to their research

Graduate students: applying for scholarships or fellowships.

Applying for scholarships or fellowships is a vital endeavour for all graduate students to fund research or career goals.

To aid in this process, the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research divides such opportunities into these general categories:

Internal funding

Durland Graduate Research Scholarship ~ The Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research are opportunities designed to attract and retain talented incoming students, within any of our PhD programs or research-based Masters programs, who show the highest potential to contribute to research supporting both the Major Research Thematic areas of the  SMU Strategic Research Plan , and the research interests of SMU professors. The aim of the Durland Scholarships program is to build Saint Mary's University's strength, vitality, and reputation as a research enterprise. Application deadline - January 31, 2024 at 5:00pm (Atlantic) Tribe Network Graduate Scholarship and Internship ~ Up to $10,000 for graduate students who self-identify as Black (Black Nova Scotian, Black Canadian, Black Immigrant) or Indigenous ( First Nation, M é tis, Inuit) to apply for a scholarship which will financially support the student’s internship position. Application Deadline - July 31.  Decisions will be made prior to September.

Application for Conference Travel Funds ~ up to $500 awarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research for graduate students with confirmed conference presentations. Application Deadline - April 1 and October 1.

International Travel Funds for Graduate Student Thesis Field Research ~ up to $2,000 awarded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research to help support graduate students travelling for field research. Application Deadline - March 15 and September 15.

Robin Rigby Trust 2024 - Call for Proposals ~ Proposals are invited from qualified individuals seeking financial support to undertake collaborative research projects that focus on understanding and implementing conservation and sustainable development in coastal areas. - Enquiries may be sent to the Trust at [email protected] .  - Application Deadline - October 31, 2024

Vice-President Academic and Research (VPAR) International Mobility Award ~ up to $1800 awarded by SMU’s Vice-President Academic and Research to help support graduate student travel.  Application Deadline - March 15 or November 1.

Mackenzie King Memorial Scholarship Competition for 2021-22 Two classes of Mackenzie King Scholarship are available to graduates of Canadian universities: the Open Scholarship and the Travelling Scholarship. Both are to support graduate study.

The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere.  One Open Scholarship is awarded each year. The value has recently been about $8500 but it is subject to change.

The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations.  Recently four scholarships of $10,500 each have been awarded annually, but the number and the amount are subject to change. Global Affairs' Scholarships for Short-term, Visiting Exchange/Research Students (SICS, ELAP, SEED)

~The Canadian government (Global Affairs Canada) is launching a series of scholarships this winter for Visiting international exchange/research students for the 2021-22 academic year. The main programs and their target countries are the following:

In terms of the eligibility criteria for the above:

  • The exchange program applicants must be from Saint Mary’s partner institutions with which Saint Mary’s has a tuition-waiver agreement.
  • The research applicants may or may not be from a Saint Mary’s partner, but must contact a Saint Mary’s faculty member who will act as their research supervisor and obtain a letter of invitation indicating their support.

Scotia Scholars Award Deadlines - The deadline for receipt of applications is April 15, 2020.  The deadline for receipt of reference letters is April 30, 2020 at 2:00pm AST.

Research Nova Scotia is proud to announce its 2020/21 Scotia Scholars Award competition is now open for Master's and PhD students.

The Scotia Scholars Award provides financial support to research trainees with exceptional potential who are engaged in health research at participating Nova Scotia institutions.  The award is designed to support the growth, acquisition, and retention of highly skilled individuals who are advancing and translating knowledge in the areas of health innovation, mental health, continuing care, accessible health services, or the well-being of Nova Scotians.  For the 2020-21 academic year, funding for this award is provided by the Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness. Funding Amount and Duration PhD: Up to   $15,000/year, renewable for 3 years. Master’s: Up to $10,000/year, renewable for 1 year.

Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada - Post-Graduate Research Scholars Program Deadline - February 28, 2021 ~The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) is committed to fostering the next generation of Asia Pacific researchers and analysts. To this end, it offers up to four one-year Post-Graduate Research Scholarships (PGRS). Successful applicants will have a background in Asia-related research in Asian studies, political science, economics, history, business, international relations, or related humanities or social science program. The London Goodenough Association of Canada (LGAC)

Mitacs Accelerate Fellowship Interested applicants can apply any time. ~ this fellowship provides a long-term funding and internship option for master’s and PhD students. Canada Graduate Scholarships – Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements (CGS-MSFSS) CIHR & NSERC ONLY Deadline: February 1, 2021 CANADA GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS: Michael Smith Foreign Study Supplements Program Internal Deadlines: June 1, 2021 and October 1, 2021 ~ up to $6,000 available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents who hold a Joseph-Armand Bombardier, an Alexander Graham Bell, or a Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarship (CGS) at the master’s or doctoral level, or a Vanier CGS at the doctoral level. CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC Doctoral Scholarships SMU Internal Deadline: October 16, 2020 (8:00pm ET) - Online application ~ The Canada Graduate Scholarships - Doctoral (CGS D) program is a federal program of scholarships awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). ~ Please note - Heather Gray ( [email protected] ) is the “University Designate” for uploading official transcripts to NSERC applications. In addition to the CGS D, each agency has its own doctoral awards.  Refer to the appropriate literature for CIHR ,  NSERC and  SSHRC for further details. Meritorious CGS D applicants may also be eligible for agency-specific doctoral awards.  Applicants complete and submit one application to be considered for both a CGS D scholarship and an agency doctoral award. CGS D scholarships are offered to top-ranked eligible applicants.

IODE WAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Intent to apply deadline: October 1; Application deadline: November 1 ~ The  IODE War Memorial Scholarships  support PhD scholars whose research makes important contributions to Canada and the world in medicine, science, business, politics, and academia.  Applicants are judged on academic excellence and potential.  Applicants must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral programme at a Canadian or Commonwealth university.

The Scholarship has a value of $15,000.  A maximum of three (3) IODE War Memorial Scholarships will be offered for the 2021 - 2022 academic year. 

PIERRE ELLIOTT TRUDEAU FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION (DOCTORAL) Application deadline is January 5, 2021 NSERC: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellowships The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has established the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Foreign Researchers. A limited number of promising early-career researchers are given the opportunity to conduct research in Japanese universities and in designated research institutions and laboratories. NSERC is responsible for recommending Canadian nominees for JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships. Application deadline is February 1, 2021

Internal Deadline to apply: February 1 Student Research Awards - Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia ~ The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia is committed to supporting research into Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and acknowledging the work of people who have chosen to do research in this field. As a means of honouring this commitment, we are pleased to provide Phyllis Horton and Abe Leventhal Research Awards each year.

This year we are offering:

  • One graduate- or postdoctoral-level Phyllis Horton Research Award valued at $5,000
  • Two undergraduate-level Abe Leventhal Research Awards valued at $1,500 each

The deadline for application is Monday, April 15 th , 2024 . Applicants are welcome from any relevant discipline.

Laura Bassi Scholarship ~ The Laura Bassi Scholarship was established by Editing Press in 2018 with the aim of providing editorial assistance to postgraduates and junior academics whose research focuses on neglected topics of study, broadly construed, within their disciplines. The scholarships are open to every discipline and are awarded three times per year: December, April, and August. The value of the scholarships are remitted solely through editorial assistance as follows:

Master’s candidates: $750 Doctoral candidates: $2,500 Junior academics: $500

These figures reflect the upper bracket of costs of editorial assistance for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, and academic journal articles, respectively. All currently enrolled master’s and doctoral candidates are eligible to apply, as are academics in the first five years of full-time employment. There are no institutional, departmental, or national restrictions.  Deadline: There are several deadlines throughout the year.  Please see the website for more details.

Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) - Strategic Master's Award

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of the Strategic Master's Award. This funding opportunity is led by CIHR in partnership with CIHR Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies, CIHR Institute of Genetics, CIHR Institute of Gender and Health, CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples' Health.

The purpose of the CIHR Strategic Master's Award program is to provide financial support to scholars who are engaged in an eligible master's program in Canada and that are relevant to specific CIHR priority research areas. This support allows these scholars to concentrate on their studies in their chosen fields.

Research Areas

This funding opportunity will support projects relevant to the following research areas:

  • Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies –  Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies

Scotia Scholars Award ~ The Scotia Scholars Award provides financial support to students with exceptional potential who are or wish to be engaged in a health research project at participating institutions. Recipients will participate on a project supported by a research supervisor. This award will support the growth and retention of highly skilled individuals who are advancing and translating knowledge in disease detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention, strengthening health care delivery systems, caring for vulnerable populations, and preventing negative impacts to health and wellbeing.

MSSU Trainee Support Program

The Maritime SPOR SUPPORT Unit (MSSU) Trainee Support Program provides financial support to high-caliber trainees engaged in patient-oriented health research at academic institutions in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. Patient-oriented health research is defined by CIHR as a continuum of research that engages patients as partners, focuses on patient-identified priorities and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in partnership with relevant stakeholders, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve healthcare systems and practice.

IMFG Richard M. Bird Post-Doctoral Fellowship Application Deadline: June 5, 2023

The $60,000 Richard M. Bird Post-Doctoral Fellowship supports researchers who have recently completed their PhD or will have completed it by September 1, 2023. Fellowship recipients will prepare two original research papers for publication by IMFG and present their research through two seminars. Depending on the recipient’s interests and IMFG’s research agenda, the recipient may also develop and organize IMFG conferences, events or roundtables and engage in various other research projects at the Institute.   

2023-2024 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program

The Government of Canada launched the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program in 2008 to strengthen Canada's ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. Application deadline is December 1, 2023 at 5:00pm (Eastern) 2023 Betram Scholarships Application Deadline - May 19, 2023 ~ In recognition of the growing importance of good governance to all Canadian institutions, the Canadian Foundation for Governance Research is offering up to three annual Bertram Scholarship of $15,000 to PhD students registered at Canadian universities. The scholarship will support the work of students who are conducting research into governance as part of their doctoral research project.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the doctoral research project should focus on a topic directly related to governance, including for example:

  • The importance of effective boards in enabling good decision-making and improving the functioning of Canadian institutions;
  • Governance issues of interest to Canadian boards of public, private, government-agency and not-for-profit organizations;
  • The role of corporate governance in enabling positive societal impacts;

Agency-specific doctoral awards

In addition to the CGS D, each agency has its own doctoral awards.  Refer to the appropriate literature for  CIHR ,  NSERC  and  SSHRC  for further details. Meritorious CGS D applicants may also be eligible for agency-specific doctoral awards.  Applicants complete and submit one application to be considered for both a CGS D scholarship and an agency doctoral award. CGS D scholarships are offered to top-ranked eligible applicants.

IODE WAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Intent to apply deadline: October 1; Application deadline: November 1 ~  The  IODE War Memorial Scholarships  support PhD scholars whose research makes important contributions to Canada and the world in medicine, science, business, politics, and academia.  Applicants are judged on academic excellence and potential.  Applicants must be Canadian citizens and in at least their second year of a doctoral programme at a Canadian or Commonwealth university.

PhD students who have been working towards their degree for at least a year are encouraged to apply for one of the three $15,000.00 scholarships offered across Canada. 

NSERC: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellowships ~ The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has established the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Foreign Researchers. A limited number of promising early-career researchers are given the opportunity to conduct research in Japanese universities and in designated research institutions and laboratories. NSERC is responsible for recommending Canadian nominees for JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships. Application deadline is February 1 IMFG Post-Doctoral Fellowship Application Deadline - May 1, 2023 ~ IMFG offers a $60,000 Richard M. FGSR Indigenous Entrance Scholarship

This award is to support Indigenous graduate students at the University of Regina. Holders of these awards are required to be a fully qualified student in a Master's or Doctoral degree program at the University of Regina. Students must also be an entering student (be in their first semester ). EMBA (Levene), MHIM (CS) & MHA (JSGS) students are not eligible for this scholarship.

Eligibility

In Good Standing – Students must hold and maintain a minimum 70% average. An incomplete and/or failing grade from a previous semester's work will render the student ineligible for support. Failure to continue to be fully eligible each semester while holding this scholarship, will require the scholarship to be discontinued.  Preference will be given to students with a higher incoming GPA.

Required  – Grad Thrive Plus 800AA must be completed by the end of the first semester in which a student begins their program, in order to be eligible. Failure to complete this by the end of their first semester will require the scholarship to be discontinued.

Registered full time or part time  – Recipients of the FGSR Indigenous Entrance Scholarship are required to be registered in the semester in which the funding is to be received and, accordingly, are required to register in no fewer than three credit hours of course or thesis work pertaining to their program during the corresponding semester. All awardees are required to be registered by the fifth day of the first month (January, May, or September) of the semester in which the award is to be paid, in order to meet payroll deadlines.

Program Changes  – If a student wishes to change their route or program, the effected departments and faculty must agree on graduate funding. Notification must be made to FGSR at the time of that change.

Other Awards – FGSR Indigenous Entrance Scholarship students may only hold other funding up to a maximum of $10,000. This includes but is not limited to internal University of Regina scholarships, foreign scholarships, FGSR funding and foreign government funding. It is up to the discretion of FGSR to approve any ‘Other’ funding. Exception: Students are allowed to apply for and hold travel awards. ‘Other Awards’ does not include Band Funding.

Employment – There is no restriction on employment while holding this scholarship.

Application Information

Rates of Support/Duration : The FGSR Indigenous Entrance Scholarship is a one year, non-renewable scholarship. The value varies from $3,000 to $16,000 over the course of three semesters for tuition and associated fees only. The amounts will be determined by FGSR. The scholarship will be paid out over the course of three semesters (no more than 6 credit hours each semester), directly to the students’ University of Regina student account, to cover tuition and associated fees.

Applications by students are not required or accepted to FGSR. Nominations for this award are made by each faculty, to FGSR.

All FGSR Funding is subject to annual budgetary approval and up to the discretion of the Dean of FGSR.

Submit Application To

NO APPLICATION REQUIRED.  It is the responsibility of each Faculty to nominate their fully qualified Indigenous students, based on the student’s self-declaration on their application to FGSR, and providing the student is fully eligible, as described in this Terms of Reference.

At time of accepting a student for admission, the faculty will submit the ranking spreadsheet (provided by FGSR) to FGSR. Faculties must rank their students (ex. # 1-10) when they nominate them to FGSR, based on academic standing and leadership.
