Uptown Charlotte stretches across just over two square miles and towers with hotels, office and apartment buildings, museums and, yes, restaurants. Staying in town on business and need a quick bite? Living here and seeking the best classy dining option in the skyline? Here are 17 essential (and local) places to peruse, ranging from upscale to low-key.

Alexander Michael's

Fondly called Al Mike’s by locals, this Charlotte staple that opened in 1983 offers a low-key tavern experience with unpretentious food. It’s impossible to go wrong with the quinoa black bean vegetable burger or the reuben on rye (get a basket of Cajun fries, too).

The Cellar at Duckworth's

Go back in time (and get a reservation) at this Prohibition-era speakeasy housed in a 106-year-old building near 7th Street. Dig into the gastropub fare (try the truffle mac and cheese and the preserved lemon risotto) and take a peek at the beer cellar stocked with 500 hard-to-find labels. Don’t overlook the signature cocktail list.

5Church Charlotte

Under the prowess of former Top Chef contestant Jamie Lynch, the Charlotte-based eatery has grown in popularity and expanded to Charleston and Atlanta. The decor is stunning — feathered lamps hang above the bar and the restaurant ceiling is covered in writings from The Art of War. With brunch, lunch, late-night eats ,and dinner (from seared scallops to lamb burgers) plus a strong cocktail lineup, there’s something for every occasion.

Green's Lunch

An Uptown stop since 1926, Green’s has long been known for hot dogs on fresh steamed buns (served with secret-recipe homemade chili), plus hamburgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and other low-key items.

Loft & Cellar

The menu in this lounge-y hangout just got a makeover thanks to the onboarding of chef Greg Collier, known for his Rock Hill brunch hot spot The Yolk, and his leadership with the pop-up dinner series called Soul Food Sessions. Under his direction, the fall menu has been filled with a variety of interesting items — and a hint of comfort food — like ham and biscuits with cider aioli, squash chips, with caramelized onion remoulade, winter Caesar with cured egg yolk, and sea scallops, with brioche.

Vida Mexican Kitchen y Cantina

Warm and festive, Vida is an easygoing (and spicy) stop before a night out Uptown. Start with the queso chipotle dip before veering toward the tacos, all served with black beans and red chile rice. For something slightly lighter, the house salad with jicama and corn comes in a monstrous portion. Don’t skimp on the drinks — margarita and sangria pitchers are both available for sharing.

JJ’s Red Hots

Easy-going and family-friendly, this hot dog joint has a longstanding devotion to Sahlen’s smokehouse hot dogs and sausages, as well as to handcrafting its own pickles, onion rings and chili. Amélie's French Bakery & Cafe | Uptown

Drop in for a hot cup of coffee or a bite to eat at this whimsical space (counter service makes it snappy). Named for the 2001 romantic comedy Amélie , this bakery is one of the most interesting coffee shops in town thanks to its clutter of mismatched tables, overstuffed chairs and that huge, faux tree hanging from the ceiling in the corner. Light meals include salads, sandwiches and soups (the signature soup with spinach, asparagus and leek is heaven), and a must-have pastry item is one of those cute macarons in the bakery case.

  • May 10, 2024

Urban Retreats: Activities to do in Uptown Charlotte NC:

Enfold the energy of Uptown Charlotte, the lively heartbeat of North Carolina’s bustling metropolis. Here in the vibrant core of Charlotte, adventure awaits around every corner. Get ready to plunge into a whirlwind of excitement as we reveal eight exhilarating things to do in Uptown Charlotte NC that epitomize the eclectic spirit and endless possibilities. From rooftop bar hopping to outdoor yoga sessions, prepare to engage yourself in the dynamic pulse of this thriving cityscape. Let’s commence on this journey together and uncover the vibrant tapestry of encounters that await in Uptown Charlotte!

1.Rooftop Bar Hopping:

Uptown Charlotte’s rooftop bars, perched above the city streets, provide a unique perspective of the bustling metropolis below. Each rooftop bar offers a distinct vibe and appeal, ranging from expansive skyline vistas to quiet cocktail lounges. Fahrenheit , located atop the Hyatt Place Charlotte, is a personal favorite of mine. With its elegant decor and spectacular views of the city, it’s the ideal location to unwind with a handmade drink after a long day of touring. Another must-see rooftop bar is City Lights Rooftop, which has amazing views of the Charlotte skyline and a lively setting ideal for meeting locals and fellow tourists.

2. Segway Tour of Uptown:

A Segway tour is a fun and unique way to find Uptown Charlotte. These two-wheeled vehicles provide an exciting way to go through the city streets and take in the sights. I recently went on a Segway tour with Charlotte NC Tours, and it was a wonderful encounter. Our guide walked us around Uptown’s historic districts, pointing out hidden gems and telling intriguing anecdotes along the way. It was an excellent approach to cover a lot of land in a short period of time while also gaining an understanding of the city’s layout.

3. Foodie Walking Tour:

Uptown Charlotte is a foodie’s dream, with a wide range of gastronomic pleasures ready to be delighted. A gourmet walking tour is an excellent opportunity to traverse the city’s culinary options while also learning about its history and culture.

During my previous trip to Charlotte, I joined Feast Food Tours for a gourmet tour in Uptown. We tried everything from Southern BBQ to foreign cuisine, stopping at local restaurants and markets along the route. It was a delightful encounter that sparked my desire to plunge further into Uptown’s dining options.

4. Art Gallery Crawl:

Uptown Charlotte’s lively arts sector is home to a profusion of galleries displaying works by both local and international artists. From modern art to traditional paintings, there is something for everyone’s taste and sensibility.

One notable gallery is the Mint Museum Uptown , which houses a broad collection of art spanning ages and countries. I spent hours roaming around the galleries, admiring the elaborate sculptures and bright paintings on show. It was a deeply engaging encounter, leaving me motivated and anxious to find more of Uptown’s cultural offerings.

5. Historic Walking Tour:

A guided walking tour of Uptown Charlotte’s historic monuments and neighborhoods will engage you in the area’s rich history. From colonial-era structures to modern skyscrapers, each stop on the trip provides insight into the city’s past and present.

I just went on a walking tour with Charlotte NC Tours, and it was an intriguing journey through time. Our guide told fascinating anecdotes about Uptown’s founding fathers, Civil War conflicts, and the city’s evolution into a booming metropolis. It was an excellent opportunity to learn more about Charlotte’s background and appreciate its architectural marvels.

6. Live Music Scene:

Uptown Charlotte has a vibrant live music culture, with venues ranging from small jazz clubs to large concert halls. If you prefer rock, jazz, or blues, there is a place to fit your taste.

Evening Muse , is a quiet music club where local and touring musicians perform live. I’ve found some fantastic talent there, and the small setting always makes for an unforgettable night. Another excellent location is the Fillmore Charlotte, which hosts big-name bands and offers a bustling environment ideal for dancing the night away.

7. Unique Shopping Adventure:

From stylish shops to quirky markets, Uptown Charlotte provides a one-of-a-kind shopping adventure that will satisfy even the most discriminating consumer. If you’re looking for luxury clothing or one-of-a-kind keepsakes, Uptown has it all.

One of my favorite shopping sites is 7th Street Public Market , a lively marketplace with merchants offering everything from gourmet foods to handcrafted crafts. I relish browsing its aisles, savoring gourmet delights, and purchasing unusual presents for friends and family. Another must-see destination is BLK MRKT CLT, a trendy store that features the work of local designers and artists. It’s the ideal destination to find unique and attractive apparel and accessories.

8. Outdoor Yoga Session:

Getaway from city life with an outdoor yoga practice in one of Uptown Charlotte’s gorgeous parks. From morning yoga to sunset meditation, these outdoor sessions provide a tranquil escape from the urban jungle.

I recently went to a yoga class in Romare Bearden Park, and it was a revitalizing face that left me feeling grounded and renewed. With the metropolitan skyline in the background and a soft breeze whispering through the trees, it was the ideal location to reconnect with nature and rest after a long day.

Built in 1800, Latta Place was owned by James Latta, an immigrant from Northern Ireland. A successful traveling merchant through 1820, Mr. Latta then retired and turned his property into a cotton plantation consisting of 742 acres and 34 enslaved people. After Mr. Latta’s death in 1837, his wife Jane sold the property to David Harry. In 1853, William Sample purchased the property, which was owned by the Sample family until 1922. Crescent Land and Timber, a subsidiary of Duke Power, then purchased the property because of its proximity to the Catawba River, and rented the home out to tenant farmers, until the house was abandoned in the 1950s. In the 1970s, a group of citizens recognized the structural and historical significance of Latta Place and formed a private non-profit entity, Latta Place, Inc., to save and restore the property. With much diligence, and due in large part to the efforts of Jean Boggs, Latta Place, Inc. secured $110,000 from Mecklenburg County to restore the home, and opened it to the public in the mid 1970s. At that point Latta Place, Inc. donated the house and land to Mecklenburg County and recommended that the adjacent property be purchased by the county to form what is now Latta Plantation Nature Preserve. Today, Historic Latta Plantation is still operated by Latta Place, Inc. In addition to daily tours, Latta offers 35 special events each year, five themed summer day camps, homeschool programs, workshops, educational field trips, and daily tours year-round. The 12,000 school children that visit the site annually are able to participate in unique interactive historical programming, visit rare and endangered breeds of historic livestock, see the process of growing short-staple cotton first hand, visit our honeybee exhibit, and much more!
