Culture and customs.

Similar to many other parts of Europe , Iceland has rules in place to help preserve its culture and geographic isolation is also a factor in developing and preserving the country’s cultural qualities. Independence, self-sufficiency and a strong work ethic – traits that allowed this northern island to flourish in challenging conditions – continue to be highly valued today.

Icelandic culture and customs are full of myths and legends, many with a connection to Christian and pagan values. Folk tales of elves, gnomes, fairies and trolls still circulate, and whether or not the locals continue telling these to unlock the secrets of the past, or simply in jest, they’re definitely worth listening to. But when news outlets report on road plans being changed to avoid disrupting an elfin church, it’s easy to believe that this unusual country and its magical landscapes are a product of what lies ‘hidden’ in its mysterious depths.

Today, Iceland is a highly modern and progressive society. It is consistently rated as having the smallest gender pay gap and strong LGBTQIA+ rights representation in the parliament and media. It’s also one of the greenest countries in the world, with almost all energy coming from renewable resources such as hydropower and geothermal.

History and government

Pre-modern history.

This island nation was settled by Vikings in the ninth century, with much of the early literature recognizing Norse sailor Ingolfur Arnason as the first settler of Iceland, founding Reykjavik in AD874 along with his wife and brother. Icelanders remain proud to this day of their Viking heritage. The Icelandic language, for example, is so similar to the Old Norse spoken during Viking times that Icelanders can still read and understand the original Icelandic sagas.

A book of settlements titled Landnamabok, compiled in the 12th century, documents the names and other details of nearly 400 original settlers of Iceland who arrived in the ninth and tenth centuries. The document tells of a Norse Viking called Floki who sailed to Iceland for fishing and farming, however, due to his livestock not surviving in the conditions, had to return to his home in Norway. After heading up a mountain and looking over a fjord full of sea ice, he named this land Iceland.

In AD930, an Icelandic General Assembly was established and was deemed a Christian settlement less than a century later. Settlers and slaves brought to Iceland by Scandinavians were of Irish and Norse descent, and although some still debate which communities influenced the identity we now know to be Icelandic, the first distinctive text documenting ‘Icelandic-ness’ is said to be a rule book of sorts – the First Grammatical Treatise.

20th century and today

After long periods under Norwegian and Danish rule, Iceland was recognized as a sovereign state in 1918. On 17 June 1944, Iceland became an independent republic. It has a multi-party parliamentary system and a written constitution. The parliament is still called Althingi after its medieval General Assembly.

Many of Iceland’s major industries stem from its location and surrounding natural resources. Tourism aside, fishing and seafood products make up much of the country’s exports and employ a majority of the workforce along with agriculture and farming. Recent investment in greenhouses and geothermal energy has seen Iceland become increasingly self-sufficient, growing products that usually do not fare well in icy climates, such as potatoes, tomatoes and potted plants. Other food is imported along with many consumer goods.

Eating and drinking

Flanked by the ocean and inhabited by almost twice the amount of sheep as humans, Iceland understandably boasts a cuisine dominated by seafood and local lamb.

The country’s diet relies on plenty of potatoes and lamb, but seafood trumps all – sourced fresh year-round from the waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic and prepared in a variety of ways. Be sure to try Hardfiskur – a salty fish jerky, best enjoyed buttered.

Sheep and cows are free-range and fed chemical-free diets, making lamb and dairy products exceptionally good here. One of the best ways to enjoy the produce on offer is to warm yourself up from the inside out with a hearty meat soup: a mixture of lamb, root vegetables, herbs, and rice.

Skyr, a popular yogurt that is technically a cheese, is also a must-try in all its variety of flavors. Eat it like the locals do at any time of the day – for breakfast, as a snack, as a dipping sauce, in drink form (called drykkur), or as a dessert topping.

Surprisingly, hot dogs are Iceland’s most iconic fast food. Widely available, a hot dog is probably the cheapest meal you’ll have in Iceland. Order one with all the toppings – sweet mustard, ketchup, raw onions, deep-fried onions, and aioli.

Rye bread (also known as rugbraud) and butter is a common side to most meals in Iceland, but the preferred way of cooking the loaves are quite unique. Traditionally, the bread is buried near a natural hot spring, sprinkled with sugar, and left to gently steam for up to 24 hours. The end result is dense, cake-like bread that has a slightly sweet taste. Enjoy it with a traditional Icelandic soup, smoked lamb, or, of course, fish.

Name a food and chances are Icelanders have tried to add licorice to it. Black licorice is beloved by locals and found in a wide range of desserts and candy bars. During your time here, head to Valdis in Reykjavik to test out a cone filled with salted black licorice ice cream. Even if the weather’s cold, the ice cream joints will be open!

The weird and wacky

Icelanders have a reputation for serving up some of the most unusual food in the world – boiled sheep’s head, fermented shark known as harkarl, ram testicles and smoked puffin to name a few. Although the country’s isolation and harsh winters once meant these foods were eaten out of necessity, today most of these ‘delicacies’ are only prepared to shock tourists. Try if you dare, but we suggest sticking to the common foods that locals eat.

Alcohol can be expensive in Iceland and is best bought at the duty-free shop. Although forms of prohibition existed until 1989, alcohol is now widely available all over the country in state-run liquor stores. If you’re feeling brave, try the local brew, Brennivin – a potent, traditional caraway-flavored schnapps nicknamed ‘black death’.

Iceland travel highlights

1. explore reykjavik.

Iceland's capital city is totally beguiling, surrounded by volcanic peaks and boasting a vibrant art and nightlife scene. Browse the city’s galleries, explore the colorful street art, dine on fresh lox (traditionally cured salmon),   or cycle to the striking cathedral of Hallgrimskirkja – trying to say that after a tipple or two of Brennivin (Iceland's signature spirit) might be tricky! Get stuck into Icelandic culture on our 6 day Northern Lights Escape .

2. Discover the Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is the holy trinity of southern Iceland. This 186-mile (300 km) route is brimming with natural wonders that showcase why so many travelers fall under Iceland's spell. Marvel at the layered cascades of Gullfoss Waterfall, explore the dramatic rift valley in Thingvellir National Park and witness the unpredictable eruptions in Geysir Geothermal Area. Marvel at breathtaking natural landscapes on our 5 day Iceland Express tour.

3. Cruise along Jokulsarlon

It's impossible not to be amazed by the sheer size and beauty of Jokulsarlon, Iceland’s famous glacial lagoon. Enjoy a boat tour along the icy waters where you'll cruise past towering glaciers and witness icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of blue drifting into the Atlantic Ocean. Cool down on our 8 day Iceland Discovery tour.

4. Experience life in Akureyri

Soak up the charm of this northern port city – the second-largest city in Iceland. Better described as a big town with lots of character, you'll be won over by its quaint turf homes, rich history and folklore, and the imposing Mount Súlur that looms over the town. Akureyri is also an ideal Northern Lights viewing location between September and April. Explore the streets of Akureyri on our 9 day Premium Iceland tour.

5. Be wowed by Westfjords

Venture off course to the unspoiled, untamed reaches of the Westfjords – without the big crowds. This is a land where mountains meet the sea most dramatically, where waterfalls tumble down into the inky fjords and puffins live along the towering cliffs. If you’re lucky and conditions allow, we might cruise along Látrabjarg (Europe’s largest bird cliff) to see puffins, razorbills, guillemots and more. Adventure through the Westfjords on our 14 day East Greenland and Iceland Northern Lights tour.

6. Bathe in the Blue Lagoon

There's no need to worry about being cold all the time in Iceland when you can slip into the famous Blue Lagoon just out of Reykjavik. Surrounded by black volcanic rock, a soak in the mineral-rich, milk-blue waters of this geothermal spa is the perfect way to relax and unwind after a big day of walking.

Geography and environment

Iceland possesses some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders and unique landscapes. From active volcanoes to vast ice fields, bubbling hot springs and enormous glaciers, these dramatic contrasts have earned Iceland the nickname of the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’.

Many of these geological features are products of geographical location – on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates intersect and their movements away from each other create volcanic activity. The country is covered by moss-carpeted lava fields, soaring fjords, incredible waterfalls and dramatic geysers, all of which add to Iceland’s otherworldly look.

The country is also the perfect spot to see the Northern Lights. From September to March, you’ll have the best chance to view this spectacular natural light show when the skies are clear and auroral activity is high. But don’t let that stop you from visiting in other seasons – Iceland’s natural wonders are truly year-round attractions.

Top 4 natural phenomena of Iceland

1. Northern Lights

The Northern Hemisphere's Aurora Borealis has captivated and intrigued travelers for years. Any winter tour of Iceland absolutely must include a chance to see the Northern Lights. This natural light display that runs along magnetic fields often brings hypnotic green, yellow and red shades to the night sky in Iceland from September to March. As one of nature's most magnificent triumphs, this is one unforgettable spectacle.

2. Gullfoss

Otherwise known as Golden Falls, this spectacular three-tiered waterfall drops suddenly into a deep cavern. The falls are surrounded by lush, green countryside, and the rainbows created by the mist and spray provide brilliant photo opportunities.

3. Lake Myvatn

This part of northern Iceland was born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and continues to be shaped by volcanic activity to this day. The combination of strange lava formations, thermal caves and a sprawling lake dotted with craters and rising rocks makes for an eerie yet beautiful landscape.

4. Jokulsarlon

Literally translating to ‘glacial river lagoon’, this monumental glacier lake is the largest in Iceland. Featuring a parade of large and small blue icebergs floating on and under the pure, icy water, this lagoon is so beautiful that it has been used as a backdrop for Hollywood films, a set for reality television shows and in a starring role on a postage stamp!

Iceland is notorious for being an expensive destination. Travelling on a budget here is difficult but can be done. Head to Bonus – Iceland’s discount grocery store – so you can cook rather than eat out for each meal. The duty-free store at Keflavik International Airport is the best place to pick up a bottle of Icelandic alcohol such as Brennivin liquor, Reyka vodka or Viking Gold beer for a fraction of the price you’d find elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to travel as a group, as operators can get better rates than a single traveler at hotels and restaurants, plus they know all the local hotspots.

If you’d like to take home Icelandic local specialties, Reykjavik is the best place to shop. Some of the country’s coolest retailers can be found on Laugavegur, one of the oldest shopping streets. Here you can browse clothing from quirky local designers alongside traditional lambswool sweaters, as well as tourist shops selling plastic Viking hats and puffin magnets. For smaller boutiques selling local art, head to Skolavordustigur.

Festival and events

Despite the long and dark winters, Icelanders are among the happiest people in the world. Why? One reason is that they understand the importance of getting together and having a good time, even if it’s pitch black outside. There are many celebrations to join in on throughout the year, but here are a few to look out for:

Winter Lights Festival

Every year, buildings around Reykjavik light up at night to celebrate both the winter world and the growing light after a long period of darkness. The Winter Lights Festival uses many public buildings, all major museums, and thermal pools to illuminate the city with lighting designs and art installations to thaw people out after a long winter.

This annual mid-winter feast in January or February is one of Iceland’s oldest festivals, dating back to Viking days. Fearless eaters can find restaurants in Reykjavik offering special Thorrablot dinners of boiled sheep’s heads, rotten shark’s meat, and cured ram testicles. If you can, try to snag an invitation to a local’s house, where celebrations tend to be more festive and involve lots of singing, dancing and drinking.

Viking Festival

Modern-day Vikings in traditional garb flock to Hafnarfjorour each June for a festival Leif Erikson would approve of. Swordfights, archery, axe throwing, a traditional market, concerts, and a proper Viking feast are all part of the festivities.

National Day

1944 marks the year that Iceland became a republic after an overwhelming majority of the citizens voted for independence. The deciding referendum took place between May 20 and 23 that year; however, Iceland’s National Day is celebrated on June 17th – the birthday of the man who originally led the movement in the late 19th century, Jon Sigurdsson. There are parades all around the country, usually with brass bands and marching horses. Music, food, fireworks, and street parties – you get it, they’re a patriotic bunch.

Dalvik Fiskidagurinn Mikli (The Great Fish Day)

Each August, the northern fishing village of Dalvik invites you to a free, all-you-can-eat fish and seafood buffet. The event is held for no reason other than to bring people together over a delicious meal. You might come for the free food, but you’ll stay for the company.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Deciding what you want to see in Iceland will give you a better idea of when is the best time to travel. Wanting to get active around the countryside and see waterfalls and wildlife? The warmer spring and summer months are probably ideal. Prefer to soak in the geothermal lagoons and get a chance to see the Northern Lights? Well, likely the cooler months – with their longer nights – are best for you.

Spring and summer are considered optimal times to visit Iceland if green landscapes and balmy days are your thing. The early spring months bring warmer days, while summer offers long daylight hours with only short nights. In the summer season, July and August are the warmest months and the busiest time for tourists.

In September, tourism tends to slow down as the weather becomes unpredictable and the countryside is usually less accessible. However, there are plenty of attractions for the off-peak traveler, including the beauty of fall colors and, of course, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

As you might expect, winters in Iceland can be challenging. During late December there are about four-and-a-half hours of daylight and it's often cloudy. In January, there are on average three sunny days in Reykjavík, with temperatures hovering around freezing point, often with chilling winds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Iceland, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Iceland, including citizens of South Africa.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Iceland?

Tipping isn't expected in Iceland. Hotels, restaurants and cafes already include a service fee and consumption taxes (VAT) in the bill, so tipping extra isn't necessary. However, feel free to leave a small amount if your experience has been particularly good, especially for assistance provided by drivers, tour leaders or service workers.

What is the internet access like in Iceland?

Travelers will be able to access the internet in cybercafes and at wi-fi hotspots in Iceland's cities and large towns. Rural and remote areas may have less internet access, so be prepared when traveling away from the city.

Most accommodation and eateries in Iceland offer wi-fi access, which is usually free to use with a code. If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card with a data package.

Many Icelandic libraries and tourist information offices have shared computers for public internet access if you are without a device to connect to wi-fi. Sometimes a small fee is charged for this service.

Can I use my cell phone while in Iceland?

Travelers can use their cell phones in Iceland's main cities and towns, though remote and isolated areas may have inferior cell reception.

If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card for the duration of your journey. This will likely be the cheapest way to use your phone in Iceland.

For EU citizens, depending on who you have your phone plan with, you may be able to use your current SIM in Iceland – your service provider will be able to provide more details.

Global roaming can also be activated, but check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Iceland?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in Iceland.

In terms of public toilets, Reykjavik and other major towns and cities have some, but along highways and at many tourist destinations – especially campgrounds and natural attractions – there is a lack of facilities. Expect to pay a small fee when visiting public toilets and, in busy months, expect queues in main tourist areas.

There have been recent occurrences of tourists resorting to other means in remote places and near tourist sites. We recommend being prepared and talking to your group leader if you have any concerns.

Can I drink the water in Iceland?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Iceland unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Iceland?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland and are used frequently by locals to pay for just about anything. Paying with a credit card at shops, guesthouses, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and on taxi rides shouldn't present a problem. Iceland is almost a cashless society, so cards are the best option; however, a lot of payments will require your four-digit PIN, so be sure to know this before you leave home.

What is ATM access like in Iceland?

ATMs are usually easy to find in Iceland's cities and villages and generally accept most foreign cards.

What is the weather like in Iceland?

Iceland’s temperatures are cool and do vary throughout the year. In winter months, minimum temperatures plummet to below freezing. In Reykjavik, summer temperatures average at around 52°F, while winter maximums are approximately 32°F. Rainfall is quite consistent throughout the year; between 25–50 mm per month, with most days experiencing some rainfall.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe country to travel to and is one of the safest countries in the world.

Is Iceland safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The people of Iceland have an open and accepting attitude to LGBTQIA+ communities, and Iceland is considered one of the world’s most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries. Since 2006, same-sex couples have had equal access to adoption and IVF, and in 2010 the Icelandic Parliament made a unanimous decision to define marriage as between two individuals. As might be expected in a small country, however, the gay scene is quite low-key, even in Reykjavik.

In 2012, more legislation was passed to formalize the name and identity-changing process for the needs of trans and genderqueer individuals. There is still a way to go to achieve full equality, but Iceland is, in many regards, leading the way globally.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel and reading more about the LGBTQIA+ culture in Iceland .

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Iceland accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Because of its remote location and size, Iceland can prove difficult when it comes to accessibility for individuals with mobility issues. Some of the main sights, such as the Blue Lagoon, are wheelchair accessible, but many of the natural attractions have unpaved paths and unsteady terrain. Iceland has a dedicated information center,  Thekkingarmidstod Sjalfsbjorg , that provides up-to-date information on accessibility and accessible facilities in Iceland, as well as other related information.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Iceland

In summer, Iceland experiences cool but mild weather throughout the country, with maximum temperatures averaging around 55°F. It’s still important, however, to pack some warm clothing at this time, as temperatures at night can drop quite dramatically. In winter, some days barely reach over 32°F, so preparing for this is crucial. It can be wet and windy, and roads may be iced over, so thermal gear, a waterproof jacket and pants and sturdy walking boots are all highly recommended.

"Iceland is like nowhere else on the planet - the waterfalls, views and landscapes are absolutely stunning - and that's without even mentioning the Northern Lights"

John, Travel Director

Explore the quirky capital of Reykjavik

No guided tour of Iceland is complete without a visit to the most northern capital of the world, Reykjavik; a city small in size, but gregarious in style. Take in the creative intensity of the city’s people, which has flourished into a unique art and culinary scene that embraces Nordic culture and the avant-garde. All set amidst storybook gabled houses, jagged basalt rock and the sea.

Journey through Iceland's volcanic landscapes

For a land named after ice, it can be bewildering to find this country is also one of fire. Connect with this geothermal mecca of over 130 volcanic mountains by traversing raw moonscape lava fields, exposed black sand beaches and the fringes of volcanoes.

Admire the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss

Of the 10,000 plus waterfalls that can fill Iceland trips, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss are two of the standouts. At Seljalandsfoss, water cascades off a cliff that was once part of Iceland’s coastline, flowing into pools surrounding lush green fields. At Skógafoss you will find an old-world majesty, with mythology speaking of trolls, elves and hidden pots of gold.

Swim in turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon

The country’s iconic Blue Lagoon is a hot spring of milky blue waters, flooded with minerals from underground rock. Immerse yourself in its waters for a soul-stirring and relaxing experience complete with healing properties of the water. Don't forget to cover yourself in silica rich mud.

See the Northern Lights

Watching spirals and wafts of blue green lights dance over Iceland’s stars is a natural phenomenon that will stir you to the very core. Caused by solar wind disturbances in the magnetosphere, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are most likely encountered in the months of late August through to April.

Our top 5 things to do in Iceland

Known for its natural phenomena, from geothermal activity and hot springs to light sky displays, Trafalgar will surprise you with another side of Iceland. Step into the country's Viking past, music traditions and cultural quirks.

National Museum of Iceland

In the centre of Reykjavik sits Iceland’s National museum – a brutalist building with an igloo shaped dome. Explore Viking weaponry, Norse mythology and Lion-Knight legends, then wander upstairs to gain an understanding of the fight for independence from Danish rule. This museum shares the unbelievable chronology of the island’s history.

Icelandic Phallological Museum

Located in Reyjavik, the Icelandic Phallological Museum contains the world's largest display of penises. The extensive collection includes 280 specimens from 93 animal species including whales and seals, and land animals ranging from bulls to hamsters.

Reykjavík Maritime Museum

An island nation wedged between the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, fishing has always been a vital part of Iceland’s livelihood. Learn of a modern emergence through fishing and uncover artefacts of violent cod fish wars at the Reykjavik Maritime Museum - a chronicle of the Icelandic people’s seafaring ways.

Best museums in Iceland

Iceland’s extremist landscape ranges from volcanic fields of dried magma to jutting glaciers that spike like crystals. But the contours of its people are just as intriguing to explore. Nowhere do their stories unfold better than the varied museums we take you to in the capital of Reykjavik.

Smoked Puffin

Despite their fishing heritage, Icelanders take much of their cuisine from the land. The national bird of Iceland, the puffin, is one that historically saved its residents from starvation. Today, it is considered a local delicacy. Sample it for yourself accompanied by lashings of delicious blueberry sauce.

Icelandic hot dog

Hotdogs are abundant in Iceland, found at petrol stations, roadside stands, malls and ferry terminals. They are most often made of local, organic, grass-fed lamb as a result of meat import restrictions and a population of sheep that doubles that of humans. Eat yours topped with sweet brown mustard, remoulade, capers, herbs and raw onions.

For centuries, Hardfiskur has been a staple of Icelandic cuisine. This protein-rich snack is made by curing the bacteria of oily fish in the icy Atlantic air before pounding it soft with a mallet. See the fish hanging up to dry all over the island; an insight into traditional Nordic cooking processes.

Best food in Iceland

Much of Iceland’s fascinating food is steeped in the history of Viking times and woven with greater Nordic culture. Trafalgar will indulge you in many obscure delicacies from this self-sufficient country and our tours of Iceland start and end with a surprising local dish.

What to pack for Iceland

People packing for a tour

With rain falling an average of 213 days a year in Iceland, a raincoat is definetely an item you won't want to forget. A much needed extra layer for the subarctic climate, it will also provide protection from overzealous waterfalls.

Having a dry layer of warmth close to your skin is something to have handy for Iceland whether summer or winter. It’s especially helpful to have close for those for those who love to spend time outdoors exploring the country’s extreme landscapes.

Exposing your ears to the elements can send chills through your body - easily preventable with a warm pair of ear-muffs.

Icelanders take bathing very seriously. With more pools per capita than any country in the world, you may wish to take a few pairs of swimming costumes to ensure you always have one dry.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

What does luciana love most about iceland.

Hear our Tour Manager Luciana talk about the beauty of her favorite place in Iceland – Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon. This lagoon is a place of unearthly beauty, were the bright blues, stark whites, and volcanic blacks of the floating glaciers show you a natural beauty found nowhere else on earth.

Destination Must-See's

Iceland ms1

Golden Circle:

This driving route encompasses many of Iceland's most renowned natural wonders, including Thingvellir National Park, the nation’s most historic area. Icelanders gathered here in A.D. 930 and established one of the world’s first parliaments. Also this is one of the globe’s most geologically significant landscapes. It marks the point where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet.

Iceland ms2

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall:

This beautiful cascade is one of Iceland’s most famous and picturesque waterfalls. It is an impressive sight where water falls from a sheer cliff plunging 210 feet below. What makes it even more unique is that you can see it from all sides. That’s right - have your raincoat ready as you venture behind the falls and travel along a picture- perfect walkway. You’ll not only see but also feel the power of this natural treasure.

Iceland ms3

Vatnajökull National Park:

This is home to the magnificent Vatnajokull Glacier, the largest in Iceland and in fact, the largest glacier mass in all of Europe. Underneath this huge ice cap that covers 8% of the island lies several active volcanoes. It is a fascinating place where the powerful interchange of volcanoes and glaciers or fire and ice are continually at odds.

Iceland ms4

Aurora Borealis:

Each year, during the winter months, the magical but elusive northern lights (aurora borealis) appear. This natural phenomenon is the product of collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere; the results are spectacular! Streaks of colorful light appear across the sky. This light show is truly dazzling and worth the pursuit.

Destination Must-Do's

Iceland md1

Blue Lagoon:

On the Reykjanes Peninsula, known for its rugged landscape, lava fields, and hot springs, sits the famous Blue Lagoon. Formed during the operation of a nearby geothermal power plant, it is a place where science harmonizes with nature. The waters are renowned for their healing properties. Visitors dip in the pleasantly warm, mineral-rich waters located in the middle of a dramatic lava field in the hopes of leaving with a youthful glow.

Iceland md2

Skogar Folk Museum:

The museum’s founder Thordur Tomasson started this museum with his personal collection of artifacts back in 1949. It has grown tremendously under his direction. Today you will find an extensive collection of tools, handicrafts, books, manuscripts, and documents. And on the grounds there is a substantial open-air museum with many traditional Icelandic buildings including a chapel and schoolhouse.

Iceland md3

Cruise Jökulsárlón Lagoon:

This glacial lagoon is famous for its countless icebergs. The lagoon is fed from the melting waters of the massive Vatnajökull glacier. It is an incredible experience to board a small boat and venture out in the tranquil waters to get up close to these mighty chunks of ice while surrounded by immense beauty. On your adventure, you may even get the opportunity to taste the 1,000 year old glacial ice.

Iceland md4

This Icelandic delicacy made from shark meat offers a unique window into Icelandic culture. For over 400 years, the people of Iceland have hunted the Greenland shark. The locals cure and hang the meat to dry for 4 to 5 months producing this delicacy known as “hakare.” Take the opportunity to learn the process and give it a try! It is sure to be like nothing you have ever tried before. Eating it is considered a sign of hardiness among the locals.

Expert Advice

diana

No fancy clothes required. Dress casual, comfortable and most importantly, in layers. The weather can change at any moment. Wind and rain are common, so I suggest packing waterproof clothes and shoes, and bringing a hooded windbreaker and an umbrella.

Iceland e2

You may find yourself wondering, is that an abandoned baby carriage, with a baby inside!? Relax, no worries, the parents are just inside dining. Yes that is right, it is Icelandic culture to leave the baby outside a café or restaurant. No need to alert the authorities, the baby is safe, and it is a common practice.

With terrain shaped by volcanic eruptions and shifting tectonic plates and the surrounding waters filled with glaciers, icebergs and whales, Iceland is like no other place on Earth. It's also an ideal spot to observe a seasonal phenomenon above the Earth: the northern lights  (or aurora borealis).

The following Iceland tours, determined by U.S. News to be the best available thanks to expert input and traveler sentiment, provide ideal ways of experiencing all that this extraordinary place has to offer. All of these excursions are conducted by knowledgeable guides eager to share their insights into their country's special features.

Tourgoers consistently describe the guides as passionate and knowledgeable, and say photo opportunities abound. NiceTravel – Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon & Kerid Volcano

Price: Adults from $218; kids from $123 Duration: 11 hours

Visit the Golden Circle's top sights, including Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss, plus a volcanic crater and a pristine lagoon on this daylong journey. The park is of both geological and historical significance as it straddles a fault line between two tectonic plates and was the site of a Viking parliament that ruled for hundreds of years starting in A.D. 930. Other highlights include Geysir, a hot spring that shoots plumes of vapor into the air; Gullfoss (aka the Golden Waterfall) over which water cascades down more than 100 feet into a narrow canyon; Kerid, a colorful red-earth volcanic crater; and a two-hour stop at the heated waters of the popular Blue Lagoon. Tour-takers invariably find the scenery spectacular and the guides friendly and informative, though a few found the bus to be too small for the number of people on the tour. Tours happen daily all year long. Pickup from various locations in Reykjavik occurs between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and minibuses return to the city around 8 p.m.

Tourgoers report spotting ample wildlife, and appreciate the knowledgeable, friendly guides.

Iceland Holidays

Iceland is located in the North-Atlantic Ocean and is a hub for many tourists all over the world. It is a land of many cultures, varied geography, and temperate climate which make it a top favourite among the travel communities. Home to volcanoes and glaciers both, this country is a spectacle to behold. This tundra has temperatures ranging from -0.5 degrees Celsius to 11 degrees Celsius which makes it a paradise for winter lovers. In addition to the cold climate and the contrasting scenery, this country is chock-full of culture. One might be forgiven for thinking the opposite, but for a small country, Iceland boasts a rather rich culture. The capital is home to theatres, operas, and a number of art galleries. In addition, art lovers will rejoice to know that Iceland has art exhibitions held twice a year. With so much on offer, travel packages like Iceland packages from Dubai should be your next search online.

Places to Visit in Iceland

So, the travel bug has finally gotten to you. You have booked a Dubai to Iceland tour package. Your bags are packed and your camera is locked and loaded. The only question remains, where should you head to while in Iceland? The question is sure to leave you scratching your head given the number of destinations on offer. So, to help in your travels we have compiled a list of the 10 best destinations to visit while on your trip to Iceland.

1.Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Gullfoss waterfalls

Iceland is a country of many dramatic landscapes. Prime contributors to what makes those landscapes as dramatic are the waterfalls. So much so that this country has about 10,000 sites that have waterfalls. Needless to say, any Iceland package remains incomplete without including these wonders. Destinations like the Skogafoss, Seljalandsfoss, and Gullfoss shouldn’t be given a miss on your Iceland trip package. With mist and rainbows all around, one would definitely not want a chance to miss out on booking a Dubai to Iceland tour package.

2. Blue Lagoon

Owing to its geographical location over the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, Iceland has no shortage of piping hot geothermal waters. These provide a much-needed respite from the cold. The Blue Lagoon is the most famous of all of the hot springs here. With blue waters which stand out against a backdrop populated with jet black volcanic rocks, this one cannot be missed. The deep blue shade of the water here is courtesy of the abundant quantities of Silica and Sulphur in it. This makes for a beautiful photo op, and no Iceland tour package from Dubai should skip this attraction. So, make sure to check out the blue lagoon Iceland packages for sure. In addition, some of the options worth visiting are Myvatn Nature baths, Landmannalaugar, and Seljavallalaug.

3. Catch the Northern Lights

An all-inclusive Iceland vacation has to include the marvel which is the Northern Lights. These were once thought to be the glitter of Valkyries taking dead souls to the afterlife. However, with the advent of science, it is now known that these magical lights are due to the attraction of solar particles due to the planet’s magnetic field. Generally regarded as tough to spot, these lights are visible eight of twelve months in Iceland. The best chance you have of spotting the Northern Lights is during the months of December to February. While the chances of spotting this wonder are higher in Iceland, one also needs to account for some other factors. Prime among those being - less cloud cover, and almost zero moonlight. One can opt for tours to better your chances of seeing the marvel. Alternatively, you might want to opt for the Iceland northern lights tour package.

4. Vatnajökull Glacier

This attraction is Europe’s biggest glacier sprawling across an area of 7900 square kilometres. The biggest highlight here, without a doubt, has to be the ice caves. These ice caves are ever-changing and will give you the sense of being inside an ice castle that’s come alive. A trip to these shining, colourful caves will make your booked Iceland package from UAE truly worth it. The best time to visit here is during the months of November to March. A guided tour is recommended to make sure you have a professional eye to navigate through these ever-changing scenery.

5. Dyrhólaey

You will realise what a truly great decision your booked Iceland tour package from Dubai is when you visit this dramatic coastline. This attraction shows the power of nature to its fullest. Standing at a height of nearly 120 metres from sea level you will be left in awe at the marvellous surroundings all around you. One can spot the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in the north, Reynisdrangar in the east and a seemingly never-ending coast in the west. In addition, one can also spot birds like the puffins and arctic terns as technically this area is classified as a bird sanctuary. Dubai to Iceland packages including a tour of this marvel simply don’t get any better.

6. Hallgrimskirkja

This white concrete church situated in the country’s capital takes inspiration from the rock formations dotting the countryside. Designed in 1937, the similarity between this structure and the volcanic basalt pillars is rather evident when gazed upon. A view from the top of this church will truly make the money you have spent on your Iceland tour package seem well spent. We say so because the views from this height are panoramic and comprise of the shimmering skyline of the capital. The best time to visit the church is during the period of mid-July to mid-August during which many activities are scheduled.

7. Landmannalaugar

With lava trails, clear lakes and hot springs all in one place, this attraction is sure to get you in the vacation mood. A good addition to Iceland vacation packages, this attraction comprises of peaks which are an unusual shade of rainbow. This is because the peaks are made of Rhyolite, a mineral-rich lava that cools extremely slowly. This is also the place for adrenaline junkies as the Laugavegurinn Hike, which takes place here, is challenging at 55 kilometres long. What makes this hike particularly interesting is the variety of scenery that can be enjoyed along the way here. It is advisable to plan your journey as these peaks can only be visited in the months of June to September.

8. Great Geysir

Fun fact: the term “ Geyser ” is derived from the Icelandic term “ Geysa “ which means to gush. Geysers are essentially points where water meets magma from the depths of the Earth. This results in water bubbling and escaping to the earth’s surface, sometimes to great heights. Sounds fun! Doesn’t it? Sadly, however, these marvels are rare and only 1000 of them can be found on the entire planet. However, an Iceland travel tour must include a trip to the Great Geysir or else be called incomplete. This geyser is currently dormant but still makes for a sight to behold. However, if you like some more action then head to the slightly smaller Strokkur Geysir located nearby which erupts every few minutes. This natural marvel is sure to set your Iceland vacation on fire!

9. Vestrahorn Mountain

The views of the Vestrahorn Mountain are what make your Iceland holiday packages from Dubai truly worth it. Towering at a height of 454 metres, these peaks are located on a black sand coast and make for gorgeous views. This attraction is a paradise in particular for photography enthusiasts, and even if you aren’t as inclined to capture this marvel you can enjoy plenty too. A walk along the coast might lead to some encounters with Icelandic ponies, and sometimes even seals if you are lucky. The best time to visit this jewel of nature is during the winter months. A trip during this period will present you with a difficult but rewarding journey. The snowy peaks and moody skies make for quite a view.

10. Húsavik

Any Iceland travel package skipping on whale watching is missing out. Iceland is one of the world’s best spots for whale watching. About 11 species of whales can be spotted here year-round. Húsavik is the best location to spot whales. While you are there, do drop by and check out the Whale Museum for its unique exhibits. The best time to spot these water-based giants is during the month of August when the warm seas are teaming with seafood. It is recommended that you book your sessions in advance so that you don’t miss out.

Best Time to Visit Iceland

The best time to visit Iceland is totally dependent on the attractions that you are after, as different attractions are best enjoyed in a particular season. However, the general timeline to visit Iceland is as follows:

The peak season for visiting Iceland is during the summer months of June and August. This is the season of mildest weather and when most activities can be enjoyed.

The period between the months of September to October and April to May define Iceland’s shoulder season. This period sees a dip in the influx of tourists but there are still a lot of attractions that can be enjoyed here.

The low season in Iceland’s tourism calendar is harsh. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, the rewards to be reaped are truly worth it. The months of November to April provide tourists with the best chances of spotting the Northern Lights.

Self-Drive vs. Small Group Tours in Iceland

Adventures.com offers packages both for independent travelers and for those who prefer organized small - group tours. If you’re having trouble deciding which travel style to choose for your Iceland vacation , consider the following points.

Safety comes first! Weather and driving conditions are special in Iceland. They can easily surprise you if you are not used to the climate. The weather is unpredictable and can change instantly . Snow, fog, rain, strong wind , and storms can - and probably will - occur at any time. Storms can end suddenly, leaving bright sunshine in their wake. The winters are long, dark , and stormy with frequently challenging road conditions.

danger sign at jokulsarlon glacier lagoon

If you are an inexperienced driver with little confidence , avoid renting a car and self-driving through your Iceland tour. If you have never driven on snowy and icy roads, you simply s hould not risk it. Our expert driving guides are skilled and specifically trained to drive in difficult Icelandic conditions. We at Adventures.com offer great experiences in all kinds of weather. We know when the forecast is too risky to head out. You can trust our knowledge of the island.

On an organized group tour, we take care of everything. You won’t have to bother with energy-sapping navigating in unfamiliar places and circumstances. You won’t get lost. You don't risk danger if you get distracted by the beautiful landscapes or the Northern Lights, because you are not the driver. Your focus can be on the beauty all around you rather than getting around .

Travel Companions

Are you traveling by yourself and interested in meeting like-minded travelers? Then our group tours are just what you need ! People on coach tours are more interesting than you might imagine!

You’ll meet other open-minded solo travelers who appreciate the security offered by an organized tour. From retirees with decades of amazing travel experiences to young backpackers who love going on independent holidays, you’ll travel with a diverse and fascinating group of fellow tourists.

group of friends jumping in a field in iceland

You may also meet small groups of friends or couples who want to spend quality time together and are open to making new friendships. Or lively families who want to spend their time with the kids instead of driving all day long. Or maybe even parents enjoying a child -free holiday. Many of our guests have made friends for life traveling with us!

Iceland is an expensive country so the term “low-budget” has a different meaning than in South-East Asia, for instance. The most cost-effective way of traveling in Iceland is by booking everything far in advance and this is much easier to do when arranging tours.

icelandic krona money notes ISK

If you have a fixed budget , a pre-booked tour package can help you avoid the nasty surprise of unexpected costs - a possible risk of individual travel. Especially when it comes to fuel, which exceeds $2 a liter in Iceland, and can quickly add to your mounting holiday bill. Booking one of our self-drive packages comes with the advantage of organized accommodations, often with breakfast included - but you will need to factor in the cost of fuel!

Time and Planning

When it comes to time, you can save a lot if you leave the organization to someone else. Regardless of whether you choose a group tour or a self-driven tour, our Iceland experts will put together your itinerary.

We consider value and timing. We’ve honed our expertise and skills over years of practical experience and decades of local knowledge. Putting together a similar itinerary yourself can take hours of research. Finding the best car rental companies, hotels, restaurants and places to stay takes time. So, whatever you choose, if you go with Adventures.com tours, you can relax. We will take care of everything.

Flexibility

If you prefer flexibility and spontaneity, our self-driven tours are for you. With your own rental car, you have perfect freedom . You can make extra stops where you wish and s pend as much time at locations as you want. If there’s something in your itinerary you are less interested in, you can even skip it entirely. Want to hunt for the Northern Lights or take a stroll in the midnight sun? Do it! Your tour is completely your own.

We will take care of your car rental, the accommodatio n, directions, and the self-drive tour itinerary - carefully selected by our team of professional travel experts. Book and receive your detailed travel guide, based on our extensive local knowledge. It will lead you to the most beautiful places on the island, and even some lesser-known treasures.

What's included in a multi day tour?

Our multi-day travel packages generally include accommodation that we carefully hand - pick for every tour, comfortable transport, and entrances to specified attractions along the way. Breakfast will usually be included, although you may have to arrange other meals yourself. This gives you the freedom to try local delicacies and charming restaurants you might stumble across along your journey. There may also be optional attractions included that you can pay extra for. Everything is listed on the individual tour pages, so it is best to check them.

What to bring on a Multi-Day tour?

What you should bring on a tour depends on where the tour is going. It’s best to check the specific tour page for an exact list (we'll also send a full equipment list after you have booked).

warm clothing in iceland example

However, warm and waterproof clothing is always essential, as are sturdy hiking shoes and personal items. You can rent some items from us during the booking process. We also recommend that you pack as lightly as possible – if you want to bring extra items, then you can leave them at our offices in Reykjav í k for the duration of the tour.

When is the best time to go on a multi-day tour?

The best time to visit Iceland and enjoy a tour package completely depends on the experience you want to have and the attractions you’d like to visit. Would you like to step out of your comfort zone and go on adventures? Would you like to hike in the wilderness or up a glacier ? Are you interested in wildlife, seeing whales , seals, arctic foxes, and puffins ? Or are you more eager to see the Northern Lights ? Would you go on a snowmobile adventure in wintry landscapes and visit some ice caves ? Each season has its own charm, unique pros and cons, and of course, a touch of magic!

Summer (June-August) is the most popular travel season in Iceland. During this season, it is bright all day , and beautiful sunset and sunrise colors paint the skies all night long. Plenty of amazing festivals and outdoor activities await you. This is the best time for road trips, campin g, and hiking Iceland’s epic trails. Some of Iceland’s most beautiful areas are only accessible in summer. For example, the roads that lead to the Highlands open in June and are accessible only until September.

Summer is also the season of cuteness and adorable animals: baby horses, sheep , and puffins are everywhere! The chance of seeing a whale on a whale-watching tour is nearly 100 percent in summer, although it is also very high in winter at about 90 percent.

It is important to note that h otels, guided tours, accommodations , and rental cars are often fully booked in summer. The solution to that problem is to book everything far in advance! Secure your reservations right away to make sure you get to do everything your way on your Iceland vacation.

northern lights at kirkjufell mountain in snaefellsnes

If you are keen to spot the Northern Lights, the dark winter months are most likely to provide the right conditions - of course, you’ll need to have luck on your side too! Winter is also the best time of year to encounter a world of glaciers, snow-capped mountains, majestic ice caves, and frozen waterfalls.

Winter is the low season, and with less competition for cheaper rooms, you’ll have a wider selection of affordable accommodation options.

The low season lasts from early autumn to late spring (September - May). These are the cheapest months to fly, rent a car, and find accommodatio n in Iceland.

For multi-day tours, each participant is allowed to bring a small backpack and one piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs). If you are traveling with extra bags or heavier luggage, you will need to book suitable storage before you arrive ; this will incur a small fee. There is the option to add luggage storage in Reykjavík during the booking process of your order in the extras section.

* The combined dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 in).

What meal options are available to me in the tour packages?

A typical breakfast buffet is included at all the hotels/guesthouses we stay at during the tour, allowing you to fuel up for the day on various slices of bread, toppings, cereal, fruits, and yogurt. Tea and coffee are also included, alongside a variety of additional tasty options.

Your guide will also find a good place for the group to eat lunch, where you can find a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so there will be options available for everyone. The dinner is usually at the hotels/guesthouses we stay at for the night. We will make stops at restaurants and convenience stores where you will be able to purchase all necessities.

The average amount spent on food each day per person is 8,000 ISK (80$). Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are accepted at all restaurants and stores. A small amount of cash won't hurt, though.

Would a multi-day tour suit me?

We welcome all participants of all ages older than the listed minimum age for each tour. Our average group usually consists of participants between the ages of 22 to 55 years. However, we have people of all ages, ranging from 8 to 99 years, joining our multi-day tours. We get a lot of solo travelers joining us, as well as families and friends.

If you find yourself having difficulties participating in any of the activities included in the tour, for example, a glacier activity, then you are more than welcome to skip it. Iceland is surrounded by beautiful scenery so you can explore your surroundings in the meantime r wait elsewhere while others do the activity. Our guide should be able to drop you off at a nearby place where there are some services available if requested.

What is the average driving per day?

The average is around 300 km (186 miles) per day on our multi-day tours. You’ll spend approximately 4-5 hours in the car each day. Stops are of course, made at multiple locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks, lunch stops , etc.

Do you offer gear rental for multi-day tours?

We do offer some necessary items for rent. For most of our multi-day tours, we rent out waterproof jackets and pants as well as hiking shoes. These items are available to book under the selection “Extras’’ in the booking widget when booking your tour on our website. If you have already booked the tour and wish to add some rental gear to your booking, you can do that at least 24 hours before your tour starts, via our Customer Portal .

Are Northern Lights guaranteed to be seen on multi-day tours?

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore we can unfortunately never promise that they will be seen on your tour. Their appearance depends upon atmospheric and weather conditions. The best time to see the lights is between September - March when it’s a dark and clear sky. The sky needs to be as dark as possible, so the best places to see them are well away from the city lights.

Most of the hotels on our tours are remotely located and, therefore, ideal for spotting the northern lights. If the forecast is in our favor, then it is very likely that you will be able to see the northern lights. Most of the hotels offer a Northern Lights wake-up call upon request if lights are spotted, so it is more likely that you will see the lights on a multi-day tour!

we absolutely loved this itinerary. It allows you to see the diversity of Iceland's landscape, flora and fauna. Iceland WAY exceeded our exprectations - particularly the northeast and northern coasts. . To make the trip easier, each night we mapped the GPS coordinates for all the points of interest for the next two days onto our iPad. This allowed us to see where our next hotel was in relation to the spots, allowing us to push back or move up some visits by a day. Most days involved 2-3 hours of driving not including the time at stops. We usually made it to our hotel by 5 or 6 each evening. Included breakfasts were all great. We chose to upgrade to the deluxe rooms and none disappointed. For two people, expect to spend $150+ on dinners. We went mid-May and the weather cooperated - only 2 days of rain and the temperatures were in the upper 50Fs / 10-15 C. It was a trip of a lifetime.

This trip was absolutely incredible. I traveled with my mom, aunt and cousin on the "Easy" package. Every tour had the perfect amount of variety and variations along the way. We had two different tour companies for the four days of guided tours and both were outstanding - small bus and small groups made it almost like a private tour. The guides were awesome and laid back and contributed to the amazing all around experience. Guide to Iceland was an amazing service. My mom and I booked separately from our other two and Guide to Iceland did an amazing job merging our packages and ensuring that we were able to travel together. There was one day that our itineraries were different, but within a couple hours they had everything fixed and the changes happened without a hitch! I will definitely use them again in the future

Essential Iceland Travel Tips: What You Need to Know Before Traveling to Iceland in 2024

This article covers all of the best Iceland travel tips you need to know before traveling to Iceland in 2024.

Iceland is among the best and most unique travel destinations in the world. From glaciers and ice caves to erupting volcanoes, Iceland is truly among the most interesting and out-of-this-world places that I have ever been to. If you are looking for your next adventure vacation, then look no further because I have the best Iceland travel tips for 2024! Before you visit, there are some things you should know first that will make your trip easier. This article will tell you all of the important things that you need to know before traveling to Iceland to ensure your trip is as successful as possible.

Iceland is not a difficult travel destination, but there are some helpful Iceland travel tips that are very useful to know. I’ve compiled below a concise list of what I believe to be only the most important and necessary information to understand before leaving. I highly advise booking your trip, accommodations, car, and tours far in advance as Iceland is a very popular travel destination, especially in the summer.

If you’re looking for the perfect 7-day itinerary for the best trip to Iceland in 2024, make sure to check out my other article here . This ultimate guide includes everything you need to know for a perfect week in Iceland! I highly recommend this itinerary.

Here are the bare essentials of what you need to know before traveling to Iceland:

  • A car rental is needed to see the major attractions.
  • Book accommodations and car rentals far in advance for the summer season (the best time of year to visit).
  • Pack layers for the variable weather.
  • Book Blue Lagoon tickets in advance because they do sell out.
  • Refer to https://safetravel.is/ for the latest information on eruption safety.

Possible iceland itineraries, getting around – do you need a car in iceland, driving tips, car rental tips, cell phone service, overall cost, accommodations, best time of year to visit, weather and what to pack, map of iceland, 1. do u.s. citizens need a visa to travel to iceland, 2. do i need cash in iceland, 3. when can i see the northern lights, 4. is english spoken in iceland, 5. can you drink the tap water in iceland, 6. is iceland friendly to tourists, 7. do i need an adapter, conclusion – essential iceland travel tips for 2024.

If you have already performed some research on what to see and do in Iceland, you have likely discovered that there are two main itineraries that you can pursue:

  • The Golden Circle: a loop along southern Iceland that offers many amazing attractions in a smaller area
  • The Ring Road: also known as Route 1, this is the road that loops the entirety of Iceland

My recommendation is to only pursue the Ring Road if you have 10 or more days. My 7 day Iceland itinerary includes all of the Golden Circle and about half of the Ring Road – which I believe to be the best way to see Iceland in a week.

Based on the number of days you have, here are my suggestions on what is feasible to take on in your itinerary:

  • <3 days : With this amount of time I recommend sticking to Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital city, and a day trip to the Golden Circle.
  • 4-10 days : With this amount of time you can see most of what Iceland has to offer, including the Golden Circle, the southern coast of Iceland, Reykjanes Peninsula, and the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
  • >10 days: With this amount of time you can pursue the entirety of the Ring Road.

Everything you need to know about Iceland before you travel

Icelandair is Iceland’s major airline and connects to many countries. The main airport in Iceland is Keflavík International Airport (KEF). Keflavík is south of Reykjavík, and not in the city. A cool thing about Icelandair is that they allow for travelers to take extended layovers. This means you can stop in Iceland for a couple of days on your way to another destination. This method can be a cheap way to combine a mainland Europe trip with an Iceland trip for no extra cost.

My biggest recommendation for traveling in Iceland is to rent a car. The attractions of Iceland are very spread out and the best way to see them is definitively by car. You can hire tours if you prefer; however, these can get pricey and quickly overcome the cost of the car rental. Iceland is best seen via car and you will likely be driving a lot to see the main sights. The airport is the easiest place to rent from.

Driving in Iceland is not difficult. The roads are well laid out and the signage is easy to follow. Cell service was excellent in most, if not all, places I went, but consider downloading an offline map anyway.

One thing to note about Iceland driving is that their roundabouts are not the same as the United States. The inner lane has the right-of-way for exiting the roundabout – the outer lane is the one to yield. It is something to pay attention to, but easy to navigate.

When filling your car tank with gas or diesel, American visitors will have more success using tap pay. Make sure to stay fueled up at all times as distances between gas stations can be far, and many close at night.

  • Driving is on the right side of the road.
  • Although I’m an Apple Maps guy, Google Maps definitely works better in Iceland.
  • The only toll on Iceland is in the north through the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, which my 7-Day Iceland Itinerary does not include. So you do not need to worry about tolls.
  • Do not drive on F roads unless you rent a 4×4 vehicle. Do not drive off-road, it is illegal.
  • Watch out for speed cameras – drive the speed limit. Cameras are fairly common.
  • Remember weather conditions. Pay attention to winter weather, such as snow, ice, or extreme wind.
  • If it is windy, be cautious to make sure your door does not blow open and slam into you or the nearby cars.
  • An international driver’s permit is not needed to drive in Iceland, you just need a valid driver’s license.
  • For current road information check https://www.road.is/ .
  • Make sure you rent an automatic car if you need it. They sell out quicker and should be rented further in advance than manual cars.
  • There are very few large (automatic) car rentals (i.e. 7 seats) available. Rent very far in advance if you need this.
  • It is popular to rent camper vans and camp around Iceland. This is an option many travelers like to consider.
  • Use a credit card that includes your car rental insurance with no international fees – many credit cards have the collision damage waiver (CDW) already included in your benefits. You can call your credit card company to determine this or to get a printed version. This will save you money . If you don’t have this, it’s always a good idea to opt into the extra insurance.
  • Some parking lots at tourist attractions require paid parking. Download Parka.is from the app store in advance so you can pay for parking on your phone.

I am a big fan and proponent of using eSim cards when traveling to new countries. eSim cards are non-physical sim cards that let you change your phone plan temporarily without having to remove or insert a physical sim card. They are super easy and do not affect your current cell service. If you want to learn more about eSim cards, refer to this article .

When I travel to Iceland I purchase a seven-day plan from Airalo. I’ve used them in the past based on personal research and had perfect service throughout Iceland with no interruptions. If interested, you can purchase an Iceland eSim card from Airalo here . Simply select the number of days you want service for and how many gigabytes of data and then follow the installation instructions. I highly recommend using this service as the easiest option!

Food can be expensive in Iceland. Throughout my guide , I sprinkled in recommendations that are family-friendly and vegetarian-friendly that don’t break the bank. My best advice is that it is always fun to go to the grocery store and pack sandwiches for your adventures! I like this option because you get to experience grocery shopping in a foreign country, and you don’t need to take time out of your travel day for a sit-down lunch. Going out to only one meal a day helps to save money, while still letting you try the local cuisine.

Believe it or not, gas stations in Iceland are actually well-known for their food! Consider trying a famous Icelandic hot dog, grab some skyr, or simply a comfort burger from the gas stations for a cheaper and quick meal alternative.

Iceland has a reputation for being expensive. This is sometimes true, but certainly does not have to be! It’s not as bad as you might expect and is comparable to many major American cities. Consider staying in an Airbnb to get into the countryside and save some money compared to staying at a hotel. Food can be packed or eaten at your accommodations to reduce spending at restaurants. Most activities are in nature and therefore require little or no payment. Do remember to include gas in your budget!

Note that the currency is the Icelandic Króna. Everywhere I visited accepted credit cards, requiring me to use no cash while there. It is always a good idea to take out some local currency though just in case. Make sure to use a credit card with no international fees, and opt to pay in the local currency upon checkout.

The most efficient way to see Iceland is by moving accommodations. This allows you to see multiple locations in Iceland that are far apart without having to drive back and forth. I recommend this for Iceland because the distances between major attractions can be pretty far. However, this is not necessary. I have done my one week itinerary staying in one Airbnb in Selfoss and taking day trips to each destination. The guide includes location recommendations of where to stay.

Which you choose is up to you and how comfortable you are with driving time in the car. If you prefer less driving time, you will want to move accommodations more frequently, or if you don’t mind extra driving you can stay in one spot and not have to move around at all. Of course, you can always just pick one area and explore it fully instead of trying to see all of it.

In my experience, Airbnbs are nicer and cheaper than the hotels in Iceland. They often will get you to unique locations with cool features that a hotel might not provide.

Camping is a very popular option in Iceland if you prefer that over hotels or Airbnbs. There are numerous rental companies set up to support camping and van rentals, and campsites across the country.

Iceland is home to active volcanoes. Always research if eruptions are occurring before you travel and plan accordingly. Follow the guidelines that are set and respect any closures to ensure safety. Please refer to https://safetravel.is/ for the most current and up-to-date information.

What is the best time of year to go to spend time in Iceland? In my personal opinion, the summer (June through August) is the best time of year to visit. This is because the sun almost never sets in the summer due to Iceland’s geographic location. This means you can explore Iceland from the early morning to well into the night in full daylight. This is very helpful as there is so much to see and driving distances can be far. This time of the year is also the warmest. Iceland gets very cold, so the warmer temperatures are appreciated when sightseeing.

That being said, you stand low odds of seeing the Northern Lights in the summertime. If you are interested in the Northern lights, I would recommend a more laid-back winter trip. If you choose the winter, prepare for winter-time driving conditions, temperatures, and little sunlight.

Iceland is home to some extreme weather. When the sun is out in the summer it can be warm, but it is important to pack a rain jacket or windbreaker. Much of Iceland is very windy, so I recommend layers. Bring warm clothes as well, especially if traveling in the winter (jacket, gloves, hat, etc.). And waterproof hiking boots or a good pair of sneakers is a good idea. If you forget something warm, you can always invest in a locally-made wool sweater!

If you plan on swimming in the hot springs you should bring a bathing suit and towel. As always, never forget your sunglasses, sunscreen, and water bottle!

I put the general location of each day of my optimized itinerary on the above map so you can better understand the geography. For context, the drive from Reykjavík (day 7) to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon (Day 5- the farthest activity) is about five hours.
