The Journey of Our Love: The Letters of Saint Gianna Beretta and Pietro Molla presents, in a faithful and precise translation, letters exchanged between St. Gianna Beretta Molla (a medical doctor, canonized a saint in 2004) and her husband Pietro (who worked as an engineer). The book begins with words from two cardinals followed by two prefaces, one written by Pietro Molla and the other by his daughter, Gianna Emanuela, who was named after her mother and for whom St. Gianna sacrificed her life. An introduction of over 40 pages sketches a context for the letters, detailing the cultural setting of these Italian lovers, providing biographical information about Gianna and Pietro, and expounding upon certain themes and devotions of their spiritual lives.

As Elio Guerriero writes in his introduction, “they [Gianna and Pietro] show us that love centered in Christ takes away nothing of the beauty of being in love” (p. 3) There is no divide for Gianna and Pietro between their love for God and their love for each other. It was their love for Jesus that drew them deeper into love for each other and for their children. Theirs was a tender, strong human love, often intimate and romantic, that was transformed by the love of God.

Seventy-three letters between Gianna and Pietro, spanning from 1955 to 1961, are presented in their entirety in four sections. First are the engagement letters, written over the course of 1955. It is clear in these letters that Gianna and Pietro set Christ at the center of their relationship from the very beginning, preparing for the Sacrament of Matrimony through prayer and frequent reception of the sacraments. Their letters in the first year of marriage follow. Gianna and Pietro understood that they had received “grace upon grace” from the Sacrament of Marriage and they were resolved to live that sacrament to the fullest, accepting any crosses that came their way with open hearts.

Pietro’s work trip to the United States in 1959 spanned nearly two months, leaving an expectant Gianna back in Italy with two young children and another on the way. The intensity of their love and devotion is made plain through frequent letters while they were apart, sometimes written several times per day. These form the third section of the book. The final section, their “letters of maturity,” is the shortest section of the book, for the couple was less frequently separated and often chose instead to communicate over the phone. Years had passed since their wedding day and their love and affection had strengthened and matured. These letters speak of sweet memories and nostalgia from previous trips spent together, and a love that had now expanded to embrace the lives of their three children.

Despite their happiness, the couple was not immune from suffering and hardships. Pietro was known among his family and friends for his dedication to his job, which sometimes created tension between time spent working and time spent with his family. While Gianna was able to accompany him on some of his trips, he spent many weeks traveling for work apart from his wife and children. The couple, so desirous of children, suffered two miscarriages during their marriage. They struggled with the usual difficulties that come with marriage and family life: illness in the family, exhaustion, education, work and finances. But in all their difficulties, Gianna and Pietro lived the virtues of faith, hope, and charity, trusting in the loving plan of God for their lives. These letters clearly show how devoted they were to each other, and above all how devoted they were to getting each other and their little family to heaven.

Gianna and Pietro were not a holy couple of ages past; they were two people who lived the call to holiness in their everyday life in our own era, consecrating normal acts of work, housekeeping, childrearing, and even leisure to God. Photographs from their engagement, their wedding day, their travels and adventures, and time spent with their children are printed periodically throughout the book, giving faces to the writers. Each letter is a snapshot, a brief glimpse into the hearts of two people very much in love with each other, with life, and above all, with Jesus Christ. We are drawn into their lives to see their unique personalities, their particular interests (including mutual enjoyment of the outdoors and classical music), their interactions with their extended families, and the strength they received from frequent and ardent prayer.

The letters of this holy couple are filled with words of love for each other (“I kiss and embrace you with all my love,” “you are my life,” “everything reminds me of you”); words of love for their children, who they referred to as their “treasures”; and an ardent desire for the other always to be not only happy, but holy too. Truly Gianna and Pietro were “one flesh,” united in body, mind, and heart, in sickness and in health. Their letters, full of love, joy, and honest humanity, speak for themselves. Whether you are single, dating, engaged, or married, this is a must-read, for the testimony of these two lovers bears witness to the love of God, a love that is stronger than death.

We’ve all felt it, that dizzying sensation of falling head over heels for someone. But what exactly is happening in our brains when we tumble into the abyss of love? As an expert in human emotions and relationships, I’d like to delve into the stages of love , exploring each phase from a psychological perspective.

In its infancy, love is a whirlwind of attraction and infatuation. You’re consumed by thoughts of your beloved, with every detail about them seeming absolutely perfect. This honeymoon phase can be intoxicating but it’s also temporary – a fact many people find hard to accept.

Beyond this initial enchantment lies the second stage: deep attachment. Here, comfort and companionship overrule passion as you settle into the rhythm of life together. But don’t be fooled! This isn’t a downgrade from those earlier fireworks; it’s a deeper bond formed through shared experiences and understanding. It may not be as flashy as infatuation but it’s arguably more rewarding.

So why does this transition happen? And how can we navigate these stages effectively? Let’s dive in further, examining the science behind these shifts in emotion and offering some tips on sustaining long-term love.

Understanding the Stages of Love

Ever wonder why love feels like a roller coaster ride? It’s because it doesn’t stand still. It evolves, changes and grows through various stages. Let’s unravel this mystery together.

The first stage is the “Infatuation Stage”. We’ve all been there, haven’t we? When our heart skips a beat every time that special someone comes into view. Butterflies in the stomach become a daily phenomenon. Infatuation can feel exhilarating, but it’s often short-lived.

Next up is the “Honeymoon Phase”. This is when you can’t seem to get enough of each other. You’re both head over heels in love, spending every possible moment together. Studies show that this phase usually lasts from one to two years.

  • Stage 1 : Infatuation
  • Stage 2 : Honeymoon Phase

Once the honeymoon phase fades away, reality sets in and we enter the “Disillusionment Stage”. This is when couples start noticing each other’s flaws and arguments may become more frequent.

After weathering through disillusionment (if you make it), you’ll find yourself in the “Deep Attachment Stage”. By now, you’ve seen your partner at their best and worst yet choose to stick with them anyway. This stage signifies deep emotional attachment and stability.

Finally, we have what experts call “Mature Love” or lifelong partnership where companionship trumps passion. The bond forged over shared experiences becomes unbreakable here.

Here are these stages again:

  • Stage 3 : Disillusionment
  • Stage 4 : Deep Attachment
  • Stage 5 : Mature Love

Understanding these stages can help navigate relationships better while also managing expectations realistically.

The First Stage: Attraction and Romance

I’m sure we’ve all felt it, that initial spark when you meet someone who piques your interest. It’s the first stage of love, often characterized by physical attraction and a sense of excitement. This is the time when our hearts race, our palms sweat, and we can’t stop thinking about that special someone .

What causes this overwhelming feeling of attraction? Science suggests it’s a cocktail of chemicals racing through our brains. There’s dopamine, responsible for feelings of happiness and desire; adrenaline which fuels those nervous butterflies; and serotonin that keeps us dreaming about our new love interest.

Let me paint a picture with some examples. Remember that high school crush? The one who made your heart flutter every time they passed by your locker? Or maybe it was a friend who slowly transformed into something more in your eyes. This phase is marked by idealization – seeing only the best in the other person – and intense emotions.

But remember folks, while these feelings might be intoxicating at first, they’re not designed to last forever. Psychologist Dorothy Tennov coined the term ‘limerence’ to describe this state. Limerence lasts on average between 18 months to 3 years before transitioning into deeper stages of love.

So let’s break it down:

  • Physical attraction kicks things off.
  • Brain chemicals like dopamine create happy, obsessive thoughts.
  • These intense feelings don’t last forever but transition into deeper stages over time.

Although this stage can feel like a whirlwind, it sets up an important foundation for relationship building as we move forward through subsequent stages of love!

The Second Stage: Building a Deeper Connection

If you’ve ever been in love, you’ll know it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. It’s during the second stage of love that we really start to build those deeper connections. Let me tell you, it’s more than just sharing your favorite pizza toppings or TV shows.

During this phase, trust begins to solidify as the foundation of the relationship. You’re starting to reveal your authentic selves, not just the polished versions you presented during the initial attraction stage. Sharing vulnerable moments and stories is typical during this period. For example, you might discuss past relationships or personal insecurities – yes, we’ve all got them!

Now don’t get me wrong; this stage isn’t always easy. It can be uncomfortable getting so emotionally raw with another person. But studies have shown that vulnerability is key in building deep relationships! According to a study by Dr.Brene Brown at the University of Houston:

It’s also important to note that communication plays a vital role here too – and I’m not just talking about chatting over dinner! Real communication means expressing needs, desires, fears…the whole shebang.

Here are some pointers for effective communication in this stage:

  • Be clear about what you need from your partner.
  • Show empathy when they share their feelings.
  • Respect boundaries set by each other.

At its core though, building a deeper connection boils down to one thing: understanding one another on an intimate level – physically and emotionally. That’s where real love starts taking root!

So there you have it – that’s the second stage of love for ya! While it may feel like an emotional rollercoaster ride at times (and believe me, it often does), remember that it’s paving way for a stronger bond between you and your partner. But hold on tight, we’re just getting started!

The Third Stage: Disillusionment or Understanding?

I’ve arrived at the third stage of love, and let’s be honest – it’s a bit of a crossroad. We all start off in relationships with hearts full of hope, but then reality sets in. This stage can either lead to disillusionment or understanding. It all depends on how we navigate the twists and turns.

Think back to your first love, when everything seemed perfect. Then suddenly you started noticing flaws in your partner that you’d never seen before. You may have even started questioning if you were right for each other at all. That’s disillusionment setting in, folks! But hold on – don’t hit the panic button just yet.

You see, this stage isn’t necessarily a death sentence for your relationship. In fact, it could be an opportunity for growth – a chance to build deeper understanding and acceptance. For example, instead of focusing on annoying habits like leaving dishes unwashed or forgetting birthdays (yes, we’ve all been there), try focusing on what initially drew you to them: their sense of humor? Their kindness? Their resilience?

Now I’m not saying it’ll be easy; but developing understanding is key for long-term happiness in relationships.

So where does one begin? With communication – that’s where! Talk about your feelings without blaming each other (easier said than done!). Be patient with yourself and your partner during this challenging time.

And remember: every couple goes through this third stage at some point. It’s NORMAL. So take heart – if others have navigated these choppy waters successfully, so can you!

Peeling back the layers of love, we find ourselves nestled in the fourth stage – creating lasting bonds. It’s a step that may seem daunting but is truly rewarding. This phase is all about building on the emotional intimacy you’ve established and solidifying it into a durable, long-term connection.

Let’s get down to brass tacks here. In this stage, you’re no longer just dating or ‘seeing each other’. You’re committed to making this relationship work. The bond that forms during this period isn’t merely based on attraction or romance; it’s anchored in mutual respect, trust, and admiration.

These aren’t just hollow words. Studies back them up too! For instance, a study by Drs John and Julie Gottman found that couples who show mutual respect and admiration are more likely to have long-lasting relationships.

Here are some key aspects of bonding:

  • Shared Experiences : Activities like traveling together or overcoming challenges as a team strengthen your bond.

  • Express appreciation regularly: Small acts of kindness go a long way.
  • Keep promises: Trust is built when actions match words.

This stage of love is indeed an art – an art of nurturing, patience, understanding, compromise, and above all else… Love itself! So why don’t we roll up our sleeves and dive deeper into this beautiful journey?

The Fifth and Ultimate Stage of Love: Unconditional Acceptance

Reaching the fifth stage of love, unconditional acceptance, feels like a breath of fresh air. It’s the point where you’ve seen all sides of your partner – the good, bad, and everything in between – and still choose them every single day. You’ve moved past petty disagreements and superficial flaws to understand that no one is perfect.

This stage isn’t about grand gestures or intense passion – it’s about comfort, stability, and an unshakeable bond. Couples in this phase find joy in everyday moments shared together – a quiet dinner at home after a long day or a lazy Sunday morning spent reading newspapers while sipping coffee.

A study published by the Journal of Social Personal Relationships highlights some fascinating statistics regarding couples who reach this stage:

We’re also likely to idealize our partners during this phase, which can lead to disappointment when reality finally hits.

Moving on to the power struggle stage, couples often wrestle with differences and conflicts. This is where individuality and independence come into play – we start realizing that our partner isn’t perfect and may not align with every aspect of our life. The key challenge here lies in maintaining respect for each other while navigating these differences.

Next up is stability – a stage where many relationships face comfort zone issues. As mundane routines set in, passion may take a back seat leading to feelings of boredom or dissatisfaction. How you keep the spark alive becomes crucial at this point.

Then comes commitment – deciding whether you’re ready for long-term investment can be daunting. Fear of losing personal freedom or making wrong decisions are common challenges faced in this stage.

Lastly, co-creation involves building something together like starting a family or business venture. Balancing personal goals with joint dreams can be tricky here.

5 Things St. Gianna and Her Husband Teach Us About Dating, Marriage and Love

Love letters exchanged between St. Gianna and Pietro Molla reveal the loving history of their relationship — and include practical holy tips.

She was a doctor who drove to Mass in her Fiat 500 and searched endlessly for the will of God. 

He was a humble, morally resolute engineer full of enthusiasm for the richness of life.

They met in the town of Mesero, Italy, and the day before their wedding, Pietro Molla gave Gianna Beretta a watch, a pearl necklace and a note. 

“Let these crown the wonder and the brightness of your beauty and your virtues on our wedding day,” he wrote. “May the watch always mark the loveliness and most peaceful times of our life, and may this pearl necklace be a sign of the enchanting light of our love. They are given to you ... by your Pietro with the greatest love.”

The couple documented their love story in years of letters to each other. Love Letters to My Husband and The Journey of Our Love are books that contain dozens of letters between the two of them. While their deep affection for each other has only captured the hearts of readers in print since 2002 and 2014, respectively, Gianna was beatified in 1994 and canonized in 2004.

Their wise words induce reflection on holy and mighty expectations for romantic relationships, from dating, to engagement, to marriage, and on love itself. In the book The Journey of Our Love , the introduction author Elio Guerriero wrote:

“Better than a theological treatise, these letters are a convincing proof that the way of holiness does not necessarily pass through religious life or the priestly ministry,” he wrote, “but can unfold in the midst of the world, living one’s own vocation as a Christian called to holiness with Christ in married life.”

Expression of Emotion  

The couple exchanged the honest and affectionate desires of their hearts with each other and responded with kindness and shared enthusiasm for their upcoming life together. 

Gianna: “I really want to make you happy and be what you desire: good, understanding and ready for the sacrifices that life will require of us. I haven’t told you yet that I have always been very sensitive and eager for affection.”

Pietro: “A new life is beginning for me: the life of your great (and greatly desired) affection and of your radiant goodness. ... I too want to make you happy and understand you well.”

Giving of Self

They often expressed their eagerness to love selflessly and worthily and brought their intentions before God. 

Gianna: “You are the man I had wished for, but I often ask myself, ‘Will I be worthy of him?’ Yes, worthy of you, because I want so much to make you happy, but I fear not being able to do so. ... When this happens, I ask God, ‘Lord, you see my desire and my good will. Supply what is lacking.’” 

Pietro: “I already feel that you are the worthy spouse I hoped for and the incomparable mother of the children with whom God will bless us. I pray that the Lord will make me always worthy of you.”

Encouragement in Virtue

They were both deeply holy and longed to become more so. In one of her letters, Gianna simply and humbly asks for Pietro’s help in bringing her away from sin and error.

Gianna: “I ask you a favor: From now on, Pietro, if you see me doing something wrong, tell me, okay? I will always be grateful to you if you do this.”

Pietro: “I am sure you will never give me any reason to have to correct you. To your question, I answer with the same request on my part.” 

Vulnerability in Insecurity

The couple’s emotional letters include some examples of their fears and resulting ability to share concerns with each other. 

Gianna: “Pietro, I promised you that I would always tell you my worries. I must tell you about something that causes me to suffer. I’m afraid your parents aren’t satisfied with me, that I am not what they wanted for you.”

Pietro: “There’s no reason for your doubts or fears ... you are the welcome one, the one all my loved ones wanted me to have.”

Time for Prayer and the Sacraments

Whatever their season in life or in the midst of their professional vocations, both Gianna and Pietro devoted themselves to filling their days with the sacraments and prayer, both for the glory of God and out of love for the other.

Gianna: “You are always with me, starting in the morning during Holy Mass. At the Offertory, I offer your work, your joys, and your sufferings along with mine; then I repeat the offering all day long until evening.”

Pietro: “‘Make our love grow ever greater, sweeter, purer. Make me worthy of her, and may our family receive Heaven’s blessings; may we and our children be holy.’ This was my prayer to Jesus as soon as he had come into my heart, while at the same time I was moved by your devout recollection while you were talking to Jesus.” 

May the loving example of Gianna and Pietro Molla inspire holy, loving and communicative relationships, whether in seasons of dating, engagement or marriage.

Navigating Love: Understanding Relationship Milestones

While some of these moments can fill your heart with joy, others might test the strength of your relationship. Turning conflicts into moments for growth can be an effective strategy for maintaining relationship health. Early milestones: Butterflies and firsts

The beginning of a new relationship can feel like a whirlwind of emotions. You’re usually getting to know each other, finding common interests, figuring out  compatibility , and trying to contain all those butterflies in your stomach.

The first date is often seen as the official start of a romantic relationship. It’s typically that moment when you both take a chance on each other and step into the unknown. After 30 years and a couple of one night stands throughout the years, my ex and I are really putting forth the effort to be a couple again. So much has changed and we're both older now. We have both had our share of bad relationships. We're both ready for a relationship, and everything seems to be falling into place. It's new, but it's familiar. I loved him when I was 15 and I always felt he was the one that got away, but every time we would hook up, we would never stay in touch. Now I can't see being without him. I got my second chance! Many of you have been asking me, since I got attached and subsequently engaged , how I met my fiancé Ken. Some of you want to know how we got together, while some of you asked how we knew with such certainty that we are the ones for each other — within a month no less. ( Update May 2014 : We are now married !)

Initially I wanted to hold off sharing the story of how we met till closer to our wedding, because I didn’t want people to diminish my message as we have not been together long.

But the truth is that even though Ken and I have not been together long, it feels like we’ve known each other all along. For some reason, we are able to connect with each other on a very deep level, in a way I’ve not been able to do with anyone else in my life. If soulmates means two souls having an unexplainable affinity for each other be it mentally, physically, emotionally, or spiritually, then that’s what we are to each other — soulmates, on all levels.

I’m excited to share my love story because I want to inspire all of you who are seeking love or have yet to find love. Whether you are single or attached, I hope this will give you hope about love. In this series, I will share the story of how we met, got attached, and realized that we are the ones for each other.

My Journey in Love (Up Till I Was 28)

How to move on with your heart

I’ve already shared parts of my love journey on the blog before. From my longstanding singlehood , to my past heartbreak , to my experience with a dating agency , these are all part of my love journey.

But to give you guys a complete picture, up until I got attached to Ken, I was single for the first 28 years of my life.

I grew up in a household where my parents staunchly ruled that I wasn’t allowed to see anyone until I graduated. When I say “graduated,” I mean graduating from university at the age of 22. While I never gave their opinions second thought, I believe their staunch and negative views on this topic made me subconsciously devalue my desire to be with someone.

I had a couple of relationships when I was in secondary school, but they were very short-term — each lasting no more than a couple of weeks. They were so insignificant and juvenile that I wouldn’t even regard them as relationships.

When I was in university, I liked someone (as I have shared in my moving on series , regarding G). It didn’t work out  and I was left crushed, taking years to mend my broken heart thereafter.

(Of course it all worked out in the end because I eventually met Ken, my real soulmate , but more on that later. Thinking back, G was not a true compatible match because had we gotten together, I would never have evolved to who I am today; he would also not be a fit for the person I’ve become.)

I grew up very career-driven and achievement-oriented. To me relationships come and go, but personal achievements and career, these stick forever. Seeing couples part ways after three, five, ten, or even more years simply reinforced to me the transient nature of relationships and that I shouldn’t invest too heavily in something that wouldn’t last. (I later realized that this belief isn’t true and had limited me from getting attached.)

Never Been in a Serious Relationship Before

Even though I had never been in a serious relationship before, it wasn’t because I wasn’t appealing enough or I lacked male attention.

On my appeal, I used to think that I wasn’t  pretty ,  thin , or feminine enough to attract a good guy but I later realized that this wasn’t true and I was simply carrying very negative, limiting views of myself. On attention from guys, I had male attention, but things just never worked out. It was always either that the guy wasn’t a match or that I had some interest but the guy didn’t follow up. I went on dates, but nothing ever came out of them. I usually concluded that we weren’t compatible and would do the fade-away thing (which I later realized wasn’t very nice when I experienced that myself).

I wanted to be with someone but I didn’t see the point of being in a relationship for the sake of it. I wanted to be with someone I truly liked and saw a future with, rather than just get together with some guy I didn’t feel strongly for.

Wondering if there was anyone out there for me

There were often times when I wondered if there was anyone out there for me at all. I would have lengthy chats with friends as we lamented about love and life, but my end conclusion would be that I, or anyone for that matter, had to remain hopeful. Whether or not there was someone for me, having a negative mindset wasn’t going to help me  find love . I had to believe there is a special someone out there for everyone, and it is by being positive and being my best self that I would attract that person, whoever he might be.

Dipping my toes into dating: Jun 2011 to Early 2012

When I was 27, between June 2011 and early 2012, I began to dip my toes into dating/love. During this time, I went on a solo seven-month trip around Europe/U.S. for work and to meet new people and experience new cultures. I thought I wasn’t getting younger, so it was really time to get out there and meet people.

I met a huge number of people, and even met a couple of relationship potentials in the process. But things didn’t work out, and I was very hurt in one of the cases. I simply moved on after that, having learned how to move on consciously from the G saga (as I shared in my heartbreak series ). Each experience helped me learn more about what I was looking for and I looked forward to whoever I was meeting next.

Serious Dating Immersion: Jul-Dec 2012

Then in June 2012 as I turned 28, I decided to give romance a serious stab. No more “dipping my toe in the water” but seriously going deep into the ocean and full-on swimming.

There were a few reasons.

  • Work-wise, I was in a very good place, receiving over a million pageviews a month on PE and getting ongoing media coverage . I wanted to pursue my personal goals, such as romance.
  • I was happy with the other areas in my life wheel , such as health and fitness (I had cleaned up my diet over the years and was exercising regularly), contribution (I was giving value to the society daily through PE), friendships (I was surrounded by positive, like-minded people), family (my relationship with my parents was better than before), and personal growth (I was more conscious than I had ever been).

I felt that I was living my most purposeful life ever and it was time to take things to the next level by working on the one area I had not actualized yet — love. I felt that I owed it to myself to give love a serious stab because truth be told, I had been putting love on hold all my life. I would always pretend that I wasn’t interested in love or say I was busy working when deep down, I really wanted to meet my special someone .

I felt that it was high time to put myself out there, date, and seriously explore entering into a relationship with someone. And what better time to do it than now, given that I was 28? I thought,  Whatever comes out of this is out of my control, but the most important thing is to put my best foot forward.

  • Arranged dating. In July 2012, I joined a dating agency (they sponsored my dating package while I wrote about my date experience). I figured I would not rely on them to get dates, but simply to use it as an extra channel to meet new people.
  • Massive socializing and networking. I also started massively expanding my social circle. I joined entrepreneur networking and business events since they were in line with my interests and would help me with my work. I also felt that meeting people in such environments was the best way to showcase the real me, since work is a huge part of my life.
  • Dating events. I became open to dating activities like singles events — a first since I would put them down as silly and awkward in the past. My good friend, W, is single and joins singles events occasionally, so I would join him when I was free.
  • With friends. I let others know I was open to dating and told them to set me up on a date. I also constantly checked with friends and acquaintances if they had upcoming events I could join. Whenever people invited me to house parties, networking events, talks, etc., I would join in. To me, these were all opportunities to meet new people, on top of attending for the event itself.
  • To guys who asked me out. On a personal level, I became open to date invitations. When guys asked me out, I would accept their dates unless I really had no interest. This was a far cry from the past, when I would turn down almost every guy for the most whimsical reason. Dating Spree – A Memorable Experience

So for the next six months, I went on more dates than I had ever gone on in my entire life . Actually, I went on more dates than most of my peers went on in their entire lives (before getting attached). I could easily be on three to four dates a week, sometimes with pretty eligible men. If I had deprived myself in the area love/romance early on in my life, I had my fill of dates and dating stories in this period.

As if the law of attraction was at work, guys would come out of the woodwork to ask me out — and these could be guys I already knew but never stayed in touch with. It was like I was putting out the intention to date, and the universe was helping to make that happen.

During this period, I learned a lot about myself and what I was looking for in a relationship partner. While I have always had a good idea of what I’m looking for, this dating phase developed my awareness to a whole new level. I also learned how to be a better date and partner if I were to be with someone in the future.

However… Still Single in the End

While the guys I met in the six months were of increasing eligibility and compatibility, I still did wind up with anybody.

I went to three singles parties with W and they were not my thing. The crowd and vibes of the first two events didn’t gel with me, while the third event didn’t even take place — we went but no one showed up!

With the arranged dates by the dating agency, I realized after a couple of dates that I was meeting much more compatible guys through my own circles. To be fair, maybe their database didn’t have guys who would fit what I was looking for — after all, I am quite different from most females. Also, I am already widely socialized compared to the average person — their service would probably help those with limited social circles and have no time to meet people.

As for dates from my own network, there were some promising prospects, but these were not enough for me to want to enter into a relationship. Given that I was already 28 with a clear idea of my vision and values, I wanted to be with someone I could see a long-term future with. It wouldn’t be fair to enter into a relationship with someone and break up a few months later.

I felt like I was back to “square one” — back to being by myself after so many months of active dating. I felt disappointed, empty, and jaded. I felt like I was in limbo, circling round and round.

Resting... waiting... anticipating.

It would be a matter of time before a special someone would enter (actually, re-enter) my life.

Just to state the obvious, relationships can be very rewarding but they are not easy. They are journeys that may bring challenges in the beginning, the middle, and the end. I want to share in this post a few of the difficulties and things to keep in mind, as couples navigate these stages.

To start a relationship we may need to overcome fears and doubts , old and new, that get in the way. Taking the risk of being open and vulnerable can sometimes be really difficult. Do we feel safe enough to let the other in? Do we allow ourselves to love and to be loved? Should we risk expressing our feelings despite the fear –or maybe the anticipation- of rejection and pain?

Many of the people that I have worked with in my practice have struggled with these questions. Some believe that their emotions are too big, they are too needy, or their baggage is too complicated, and wonder if they will be too much. Others, on the other hand, feel like there is something wrong with them and wonder if they will ever be enough. Some others carry a deep secret and a profound shame with them, and wonder: if they really knew me, would they run away?

These questions are not unusual, but can sometimes be paralyzing. The answers are never simple and cannot be known in advance. Becoming aware of our doubts, fears, hopes, and motives, accepting them as part of us, and understanding where they come from, are usually helpful first steps. While self-awareness is essential, sometimes we may think too much, so it is important to listen to our mind, our heart, and our body. Looking inside of ourselves with love and kindness is also crucial, in order to have a sense of what is important for us in a relationship, what we are looking for, and what our own personal boundaries are.

The more time we spend together with our partner , the more opportunities we have for connection and intimacy, but also for friction and disappointment. The more history is shared, the more opportunities to become closer and create meaning together, but also to harbor anger or to feel hurt. Whatever will happen to an established couple relationship is a function of three elements: the two individuals and the relationship itself.

The first two are each individual’s experiences, thoughts, and feelings. These will define what each person believes they need and want from a relationship, and how capable or willing they are to find a middle ground. For example, I once had a client who, a few months before his wedding, told me: “I want to do what my father did with my mom: I just want to tune out, find a way to ignore her.” The role-models we had in our life many times define, consciously or not, what we believe relationships are about.

The relationship itself is the third element, and it is bigger than the sum of its parts. For example, a dynamic I have observed often times can be called “pursuer-avoidant,” in which one person wants more from the other (more affection, more attention, more communication, more time, etc.), and the other is evasive or avoidant, whether because he feels uncomfortable, overwhelmed, or afraid. This dynamic sometimes leads to gridlock in the relationship, undermines the possibilities for negotiation, and can trigger resentment on both sides.

What to do when our baggage and our partner’s does not seem to match? There is no one single answer because a couple is a complex, ever-evolving entity. However, it is important to keep an open and curious mind about our partner’s experience, thoughts, feelings, needs, dreams, and goals. Truly acknowledging and respecting our differences is vital for understanding each other. Taking ownership and responsibility for our actions and the things we say (or do not say), as well as being open to receiving feedback, is important to maintain a strong friendship and a sense of safety and trust in the relationship.

Endings are almost never easy. Sometimes the difficulty resides in becoming willing or able to end a relationship that feels stale, is not meeting our needs, or has become toxic or abusive. Sometimes the challenge is to cope with the loss of a relationship, whether it was our own choice, our partner’s decision, or caused by life events out of our control.

The prospect of ending a relationship can be daunting, especially after a long time together. Are we making a rushed decision? Is there no way we can work this out? How much more can I stand? Have I been waiting for too long already? How can I deal with this uncertainty? These are some of the questions I have heard several times. As a therapist, it is not my job to answer them, but to be with my clients as they struggle with them, helping them untangle, make sense, and understand the meaning of the situation.

Most times this process is anything but rational and linear. A wide range of feelings will probably emerge, many times in conflict with our rational thoughts. Love, guilt, fear, pride, avoidance, grief, sadness, anger, and hope – we may feel them all at the same time, or we can go back and forth between them.

Paying attention to our patterns and personal history is equally important: do we tend to cut relationships as soon as we feel uncomfortable? Do we turn relationship into a personal project that admits no failure? Developing self-awareness to understand the nature of our fears is useful to reduce their effect on us. Kindness and patience with our difficulties, as well as respect for ourselves and our partners, are some of our best allies in this part of the journey.

Even though human beings are “wired” to be in relationships, these are not easy and sometimes require a lot of work. This “work” involves looking within and looking across. We must look within to become aware, accept, and understand our own thoughts, feelings, wishes, hopes, and challenges. We must look across to recognize, make space for, and honor our partner’s experiences and reality. Each step of the journey brings new challenges and opportunities for each person and for the relationship itself. It is in this journey, more than in any imagined destination, where the promise of love, connection, and fulfillment can be found.

The Star: A Journey of Love – A Love That Never Gives Up

Welcome to the second Sunday of Advent. Advent can be an amazing season, an amazing journey, if we use it as it was designed. The word advent is a Latin term which means “coming.” Advent was designed to be a season of great expectation as we look forward to celebrating Jesus’ first coming at Christmas as well as looking forward to His second coming, the day He returns to make all things right. So we use these weeks leading up to Christmas to prepare for His coming by focusing on the four gifts of Christmas delivered through Christ: hope, love, joy, and peace.

Our series this Advent is called “The Star, A Journey to Christmas.” I mentioned last week that out of the four Gospels where Jesus’ life is recorded, the Star of Bethlehem was only recorded in the book of Matthew. The star today receives a whole lot more attention in Christmas pageants than it ever got in the Gospel accounts. But maybe that’s because we realize today how important this simple star really was. Over 2,000 years ago, it appeared as a symbol of hope, as a guide to the long awaited one, the newly arrived Messiah. It was a star that led people to Jesus then, and it still leads people to Jesus today.

So together we’re following the star this Advent looking for those four gifts of Christmas. Last week, the star led us to hope, that even if we can’t see it very well, hope is always there. This week we’re on the journey towards love. It’s a love that never gives up, a love that conquered sin and death, a perfect love that surrounds us daily and fills us eternally.

As we continue our exploration this morning, let me ask you a few questions and see a show of hands: How many of you are finished with all your Christmas shopping? How many of you haven’t started yet? How many of you plan to just skip the whole shopping thing and go straight to the Christmas dinner?

Well, wherever you stand on Christmas gift shopping and giving, let me tell you this, Americans spend a lot of money on Christmas. Retail sales from November through December in 2022 are expected to grow 6% to 8% over 2021’s record sales despite all the inflation. That’ll make a new record between $942 billion to $960 billion.1 At that rate, we’ll be over $1 trillion next year. Do you know how many zeros that is? ($1,000,000,000,000)

But while that number is a bit mind-blowing, here is another fun number for you: $124 billion. That’s how much Americans spent on their pets last year,2 compared to $60 billion in 2016. Which leaves me with one question: Why?!?! Don’t get me wrong—I love animals as much as the next person, but $124 billion!?! That’s equivalent to buying 2,638,298 new cars! All for animals that really just cause a lot of work—we walk them, clean up after them, vacuum up the hair, give them allergy pills, apologize to the neighbors…. Really, our pets should be paying us. But we love them, so we spend our hard-earned money and time caring for them. It’s not because of anything they’ve done for us, but simply because we love them.

Okay, I admit this is not the best comparison. Please don’t leave here thinking that I’m telling you God loves us like we love our dogs and cats. But the example does start us down the path of recognizing some things about love.

So let me ask you to consider several other questions: How do you perceive God’s love for you? Do you feel you need to earn His love? Do you wonder if God’s love is really meant for you? Do you see the overflow of God’s love in your own life toward others?

If we take a deeper look at God’s love, we see it’s a love that was present from the beginning of time, a love big enough for each and every one of us, and it’s meant to overflow in our lives…my cup runneth over (Psalm 23). It’s a love so deep that caused God to physically enter our dark world that first Christmas. Let’s look at the first point.

  • God’s Love was Present from the Start

We often talk about Christmas as the time “when love came down.” We say God’s love entered the world as a baby. And that is all true. But we would be mistaken if we didn’t take a deeper look back in time to the beginning of the world. The history of our entire world, the story of the entire Bible, is a love story from the very first day of creation. It is the story of God’s love for His people and His plan of redemption to bring us back into relationship with Him.

God is not some distant uncle who suddenly shows up with a gift nobody knows what to do with. Nor is He a cold and stingy distant figure grudgingly offering us an occasional token. Yes, love came crashing into that stable in Bethlehem, but Jesus’ birth was actually the culmination of a long history of love. And His love for us today, this Advent season, is not something new.

The apostle Paul wrote in Ephesians: Ephesians 1:4–6 4 God chose us in Christ to be holy and blameless in God’s presence before the creation of the world. 5 God destined us to be his adopted children through Jesus Christ because of his love. This was according to his goodwill and plan 6 and to honor his glorious grace that he has given to us freely through the Son whom he loves.

God’s love does not depend on us. It’s not something we have to earn or perform for to maintain. It starts with God, not us. God is love. It is His nature and character. His love for us was there from the beginning of time and will continue throughout eternity. It can be a mind-boggling concept to grasp, I know. But as we pursue the journey of love, let me encourage you to simply accept that God’s love for us exists beyond the constraints of time, space, and our limited understanding. It’s a love worth focusing on and meditating on during this season of preparation.

  • God’s Love is Enough

Do you ever have a hard time loving God? Do you ever have a hard time accepting His love for you? Do you ever doubt that His love is enough to cover all the pain, hurt, selfishness, and evil of our world? Or that His love is enough to cover the pain or hurt in your own heart?

Cause if we’re honest, I think most all of us would have to answer yes to all those questions. Despite what we may know in our heads or believe in our hearts, there is a daily struggle to live in the reality of God’s love for us. It’s so different from our own ability to love. It may be vastly different from the love—or lack of it—that you’ve experienced in your human relationships and life overall.

But let me remind you of some good news this morning—the best news. God loves you! Not because of anything you’ve done or anything you have to do. Not just for today, and then He’s going to take it all back tomorrow. Not like the father or mother or spouse or ex-spouse or friend or enemy who let you down, who hurt you or abused you or twisted the concept of love to inflict damage and heartache that can seem so hard to heal from and let go of.

God loves you purely, perfectly, wholly, extravagantly. You don’t have to earn points to get love from God. He pours love out on us—no matter how unlovable or unworthy we may feel. And He pours out love continuously.

Think of the Christmas story characters. They didn’t fit into the “most lovable people” box. They were a bewildered, young, average, and humble engaged couple, a band of smelly shepherds, a group of foreign mystics. Dig a little deeper behind the bathrobes and kid animal costumes of the typical Christmas pageant scene, and you’ll get the picture.

No matter where you are on the journey of life, God’s love is for you. It is more vast and perfect than you can ever fully and completely grasp this side of heaven—and it’s so worth opening your heart and mind and soul to.

Maybe that was the reason behind the apostle Paul’s prayer that he offered for the Ephesians when he wrote…

Ephesians 3:17–19 17 And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

God’s love is deep, wide, long, and high. And it doesn’t change even if our feelings do. Even when we feel distant from God’s love, He is there beside us.

The people of Israel must have felt abandoned many times. They must have struggled to believe that God still loved them when it took so long for the promise of a Messiah to be fulfilled. But even when they grew weary of waiting and questioned God, His love still never failed. It was there all along to carry and sustain them through uncertainty. And in the right timing, God’s love was delivered in full through the birth and person of Jesus Christ, God in flesh.

Nothing can change that love. Nothing can tear us away from it. And that love will never fail us as we wait for Jesus’ second coming to earth to complete His ultimate work.

In Romans, Paul gave us a description worth clinging to when we struggle or doubt or simply need a hopeful reminder:

Romans 8:38–39 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  • God’s Love Overflows

Does anyone have company coming this Christmas? Anyone have company that might be staying for a couple of days? Christmas is such a wonderful time to be together, but here’s the real question—will anyone be sick of their guests after day three of their visit?

It’s the very nature of God’s unending and unlimited love that it cannot be contained. God doesn’t want it to be contained. The Bible tells us to love others, even the people who seem unlovable. Sometimes that is easy, and sometimes it’s the hardest thing in the world. And those holiday houseguests—sometimes the unlovable are the people closest to us. They can be the people we truly love most, but who also have the most power to drive us crazy, remind us of our weaknesses, and even bring up our deepest pain.

So on a very practical level, this Advent journey of love is also about God’s love in us overflowing to others. In reality, that’s not something we can do—or do for long—on our own effort. It must come from the source of love, God.

Peter describes it like this. 1 Peter 1:22 Now you can have real love for everyone because your souls have been cleansed from selfishness and hatred when you trusted Christ to save you; so see to it that you really do love each other warmly, with all your hearts.

That doesn’t mean it is easy, but it shifts our focus from trying hard to love others to experiencing the depth of God’s love in a way that allows it to overflow in our lives to the people around us.

Today, we are going to celebrate the love and relationship we have with God through Holy Communion. And as we get ready for that, I want to read to you a passage of Scripture from 1 John that sums up that connection between God’s love and our love for others:

1 John 4:7–19 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. 

This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

We love because he first loved us.

There is so much that could be unpacked in that passage, but I want us to capture and take away three main things today:

  • God is love, and He sent His Son as a sacrifice for us. This was Jesus, God’s love from the start and His gift to each of us.
  • We can know and rely on God’s love—God’s love is enough for us today, tomorrow, and always.
  • We love because God first loved us. God’s love overflows within and through us to others.

God’s love is truly the whole reason we celebrate this season. So let me encourage you to dwell on it and abide in it throughout Advent. Read these Scriptures we’ve discussed over and over again, and let their truth wash over and through you. Then walk in God’s love as it penetrates and changes your heart.

This journey of love is not just about words and feelings of acceptance—it’s also a journey of action and truth. The gift of Jesus was God putting love into action. His love is an overwhelming love that calls and moves us to similar action. Look at it this way….

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

That’s God’s gift to you, His action. Then He calls us into action.

1 John 3:16 tells us, This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.

As we prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christ’s arrival, let allow His love to penetrate our hearts, and let’s put into practice His love flowing through us.

Prayer: God, thank You that in this season of Advent, that You invite us to follow the star on a journey of love. Help us to experience the depth of Your love, which has been there from the start, is enough for all of us, and overflows in our lives to others. Please continue to fill us with expectation as we live in Your love and wait for the complete fulfillment of that love when Christ comes again. Amen.

I hated my body as a kid. Watching my daughter love hers has been a healing journey for me

“Mommy, do I have to get a Happy Meal?”

I was so stunned by my 9-year-old daughter Mila’s request, I almost hit the car placing their order in front of us. I’d been wanting Mila to give up McDonald’s for years, beating myself up for allowing it as more than an occasional treat, forgoing nutrition for convenience. 

“It’s not enough food. Can I please get 10-piece nuggets with fries?” she asked sweetly. 

“But what about the toy? I think it’s a good one this month!” I said, surprising myself for encouraging clutter. 

“Ugh, it’s OK, they’re kinda babyish,” she said, snapping her gum. And from my quick glance at the rearview mirror, I believe there was an eye roll, too.

I felt the tears start to well as I placed her order, sans Happy Meal. Of course, those tears had nothing to do with chicken nuggets. I simply wasn’t ready for my daughter to be the one initiating this transition, this rite of passage, this step toward, sigh, puberty .

Sitting in my backseat — without a booster or car seat — was my one and only child, no longer a baby but a full-fledged tween with hormones on the brink of raging. We’d taken some other baby steps away from childhood , like opting for trips to Claire’s and Sephora rather than the toy store, drop-off birthday parties and playdates, showering without help and even asking for a bra. 

I did not ask my mom for a bra. When I was barely 12, she sternly told me that getting a bra had become “necessary” (thank you, uncooperative metabolism). As puberty took over, it pushed the scale up and my boobs out. I was sullen, moody and self-conscious in the dressing room of the department store as the salesperson wrapped a measuring tape around my chest and brought me a barrage of age-appropriate styles to try on. 

It was not “necessary” that Mila wear a bra, but she spotted one in her size while we were out shopping. There wasn’t much for the soft, cotton pullover training bra to hold, but she swore it would make her feel more comfortable. Rather than derail her curiosity, the bra came home with us and the next morning, it was under her T-shirt without another word about it. 

When I wore my first bra out in public, I was self-conscious,  positive that everyone was staring at the faint outline of straps showing through my shirt. For weeks, I walked around with my arms crossed over my chest. But my daughter’s silence wasn’t a sign of embarrassment. It was quite the opposite — she was so comfortable and confident in her changing body. There was nothing to discuss; she needed no reassurance. Mila was proud to wear a bra and excited to enter all the rites of passage that came along with puberty, which is so different from how I felt about my body when I was her age.

I'm in awe that my daughter is proud of her body and celebrates it with such ease. Watching her navigate the start of puberty so gracefully has come with a surprising perk: It’s helping me as I head into perimenopause.

My natural inclination is to panic that 30-plus years later, once again my face is breaking out, my moods are swinging, my boobs are changing and my hormones are out of whack. Instead, my daughter has been my unexpected reminder that change is good — even healing — and I should embrace this wave of physical and emotional changes.

Also unlike me at her age, she doesn’t see food as taboo, which at times makes it  counterintuitive for me to follow her lead, knowing how uncomfortable, embarrassed and confused I was in my skin as a girl. I have to remind myself that Mila’s relationship with food is healthy. She eats nuggets and whatever else sounds good without guilt or shame. 

At 9 years old, I was already on a diet and fearful of ingesting anything that wasn’t labeled “light” or “diet.” My stubborn baby fat wouldn’t budge, and with the onset of puberty, it felt like even a craving would make me gain weight. My childhood pantry was stocked with ’80s staples like Crystal Light, bland microwave popcorn and rice cakes, which just made me crave decadent foods even more. As I hit the teen years, babysitting jobs doubled as opportunities to raid pantries overflowing with cookies, chips and non-diet soda.

When I found out I was having a daughter, I was elated, but before she was even born, apprehension over what the puberty years would bring set in. I struggled with my weight, body image, social anxiety and imposter syndrome from the time puberty began until, well, now — as a grown woman barreling toward menopause . I see so much of myself in my daughter. She loves music, pop culture, reading and writing. She’s quirky, fiercely loyal to her friends, sensitive, inquisitive and creative. But we are polar opposites when it comes to body acceptance. I got my first period at 12 years old and cried for days, feeling like a human science experiment. No one could know. I lied to my friends for months, carefully hiding pads in the bottom of my locker. After my daughter discovered menstruation, she was curious and — dare I say — looking forward to it. Once we were standing in a long line at Target and Mila decided that was the perfect time to ask — at the top of her lungs — “Mommy? How old were you when you got your first period?”  

I mumbled that I got my first period in the seventh grade, then whispered that we could talk more about it when we got home. “Why not now?” she implored.  

How could I explain that at 9 years old, she was light-years more comfortable talking about and anticipating these changes than I was at 12 (and let’s be honest, at 46)? When Mila came home from school and shared that some boys told her they reminded her of a “fat” TV character, I was triggered. In the sixth grade, my friends and I were pretending to be our favorite celebrities and I desperately wanted to be “Alyssa Milano.” Alas, I was told to be “Roseanne Barr” as it was more “believable.” I didn’t go to school for three days and pushed down the hurt with handfuls of snacks and dessert. My daughter just shrugged it off. “It hurts my feelings, but I know I’m not fat,” she said. 

Funny how I worried about getting my daughter through puberty and teaching her to feel comfortable around food, to love her body and find inner peace — yet she’s the one with advice, comfort and perspective.

That’s not to say my work as a parent of a prepubescent tween is done. I’ve helped Mila navigate friendship drama, disappointments and a penchant for sass talk, usually directed at me. And for all her maturity around puberty and her changing body, she’s still straddling that fine line between childhood and tweenhood. It’s her instinct to push me away but then beg me to stay. She still can’t go to sleep without my husband or me reading her a story and singing the medley of songs curated for her as a baby. She wants to watch “Bluey” but is a massive fan of “Friends” reruns. She’s a Swiftie but Barbie still rules. And when I slip and order her a Happy Meal, she eats it without complaint because she knows it’s what my own raging hormones need to see.

Journey is continuing the celebration of its five-decade career with a run of 2024 shows.

The 50 th Anniversary Freedom Tour kicks off Feb. 9 in Biloxi, Mississippi and will play 30 dates in North America through April 29 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. local time on Sept. 29 via ticketmaster.com.

Toto, which supported Journey on their tour earlier this year to celebrate their "Freedom" album, will again join Journey founder, guitarist Neal Scho n, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, lead singer Arnel Pineda, keyboardist Jason Derlatka, drummer Deen Castronovo and bassist Todd Jensen as show openers.

Journey's tour finds the Rock & Roll Hall of Famers tearing through a set list of anthems including "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Be Good to Yourself" and, of course, "Don't Stop Believin'."

When "Freedom" arrived in July 2022, Schon told USA Today that the album title was originally tapped for the band's 1986 release, "Raised on Radio," but then-singer Steve Perry didn't like it, "so we sat on it for many years … when we were tossing around album titles said, why not just call the whole thing 'Freedom?' It's for the times right now."

Schon was also sanguine when reflecting on the band’s legacy.

"It’s quite an accomplishment and I’m very proud of what we’ve done and how we’ve gotten through emotional and personnel changes and survived," he said. "It’s pretty mind-boggling but also a lot of hard work."
