Four varieties of kanar

Kanar was a Cardassian liquor which varied in color and was somewhat thick in consistency compared to most Human drinks.

On board the USS Enterprise -D , Glinn Daro told Chief Miles O'Brien that kanar " takes a bit of getting used to. " ( TNG : " The Wounded ")

When Elim Garak 's cranial implant began to malfunction in 2370 , he began to drink an excessive quantity of kanar in an attempt to mimic the implant's numbing effect using the alcohol. ( DS9 : " The Wire ")

Kanar, 2371

Two bottles of (spoiled) kanar

It was possible for kanar to spoil , something which apparently happened to two bottles of the beverage that Quark tried to give to Ulani Belor and Gilora Rejal in 2371 . Shortly afterwards, Morn took ill from food poisoning , and suspected that a free glass of the drink at Quark's was to blame. ( DS9 : " Destiny ")

Shortly after the Klingon invasion of the Cardassian Union in 2372 , Quark had eighty cases of kanar in his stockroom. Quark gave a bottle of it to Garak "on the house" because he did not foresee ever selling it in his bar again. ( DS9 : " The Way of the Warrior ")

Tekeny Ghemor , while spending his final days on Deep Space 9, began giving away secrets of the Cardassian government ; to try and stop this, Dukat and Weyoun tried to poison him with a bottle of kanar laced with Voraxna poison. Weyoun drank a glass of the poisoned kanar and found it to be quite toxic, explaining the Vorta were immune to most poisons. ( DS9 : " Ties of Blood and Water ")

Damar was fond of indulging in kanar , especially the 2327 vintage . Quark used it to great success as the inebriated Damar revealed that the Bajoran minefield was about to be brought down. ( DS9 : " Behind the Lines ") Later, he often drank to excess during his humiliating tenure as head of the Cardassian Union in 2374 - 2375 – so much so that, after giving up the spirit as he planned his revolt against the Dominion, Weyoun joked about how different he looked without a bottle in his hand. He began storing empty bottles in his quarters. Upon seeing them, Dukat encouraged his former subordinate to be strong. ( DS9 : " 'Til Death Do Us Part ", " The Changing Face of Evil ")

In the first draft script of "The Changing Face of Evil", Weyoun wondered if the reason Damar hadn't opened a nearby bottle of kanar was that it was "a poor vintage," though Damar replied, " Not at all, " then proceeded to open the bottle and drink from it.

Weyoun deeply disliked kanar , while Damar thought that he shouldn't trust a Cardassian who did not enjoy a glass of kanar every once in awhile. ( DS9 : " Image in the Sand ")

Background information [ ]

Although not stated directly, it was implied that there were several types of kanar , based on appearance alone. In "The Wounded", it appeared to be a thin, light purple, transparent drink served in small glasses, akin to many wines or spirits. In "The Maquis, Part II", it was seen as the thick, black drink in characteristic bottles seen in many DS9 episodes. Then, in "The Wire", it was a blue, opaque drink in a different kind of bottle (similar to the bottle used for the Kali-fal prop). In "The Way of the Warrior", it appeared different again; this time it was an orange, slightly thick, opaque liquid, but served in the characteristic kanar bottles. In "Behind the Lines", kanar appeared as a thin black drink.

The thinner liquid in "Behind the Lines" was of an older, more expensive vintage, leading to the conclusion kanar may thin out as it ages, or that higher-quality vintages have a greater alcohol content; this would explain the thinness of it, as alcohol has a very low viscosity.

The strength of kanar may also vary greatly. In many episodes, we see Cardassians drinking multiple bottles of it like it was wine, while in "Behind the Lines", Quark and Damar are both rendered very drunk by sharing a single bottle, suggesting that this expensive kanar had the strength of a hard liquor.

Karo syrup was used for brown kanar to create the effect of a dark, thick liquid, which Damar actor Casey Biggs actually drank. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 696) Property Master Joe Longo joked, in Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 1, Issue 4 , that " he was drinking so much he was getting wired, so we started using a thickened sugar-free pancake syrup. "

Damar's fondness for the spirit, first observed in "Behind the Lines", was introduced as a way to show an inner turmoil, essentially using it to drown out his conscience and justify an alliance he knows to be wrong. ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 688) Indeed, in "Strange Bedfellows", he looks at himself in the mirror and tosses the drink at his reflection just before helping Worf and Dax escape.

A kanar bottle was among the items which were sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay. [1]

Apocrypha [ ]

The TNG relaunch novel Q&A states that the Karemma acquired a taste for kanar when it was exported to the Gamma Quadrant following the Dominion takeover of the Cardassian Union .

Star Trek Online states that, during the Occupation of Bajor , the Cardassians forced local Bajoran monks to distill kanar for their consumption. In one mission, "Second Wave" Cardassian ambassador Rugan Skyl, asks the player character to obtain a bottle of this kanar in exchange for his support at a conference on the Borg threat. This is a different item than regular Kanar, and that while the items have the same shape of bottle, the "Bajoran distilled Kanar" is a red-brown liquid while the regular Kanar is tan-brown.

Go Behind the Scenes Of Wines That Rock's Star Trek Collection

Explore the making of new wines inspired by the Andorians and Cardassians

Star Trek Universe

StarTrek.com

With its 2021 release of both Andorian Blue Premium Chardonnay and Cardassian Kanar Red Wine Blend bottles, the team at Star Trek Wines has continued its mission to raise the bar and to boldly go where no wine company has gone before. Since launching in 2019, Star Trek Wines has released two official new wines each year. Why just two wines per year? “It takes us a full year to do the research, planning, and design for these special bottles, not to mention the effort that has been put into the actual juice in the bottle” says Heather Hudson, COO of Wines That Rock, the company behind Star Trek Wines.

Star Trek Wines inaugural launch included an original design for its United Federation of Planets wine, a sleek futuristic bottle with a Premium Old Vine Zinfandel and the long sought-after Chateau Picard Grand Cru Bordeaux. Convincing the actual 5th generation Chateau Picard vineyard located in the Saint-Estèphe region of France to put Jean-Luc Picard’s family label on its world-class and highly regarded Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux was no small feat, but the Star Trek Wine team wanted there to be no doubt about its commitment to authenticity and quality. While presenting its first two wines at the Star Trek Convention in 2019, the wine team was inspired by comments from several fans, as well as a couple of Klingon Warriors.  The next 2 releases were set, including a new United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc and a of course - Klingon Bloodwine. Working together with the Klingon Language Institute (KLI), the creative team at CBS and a dedicated team of award-winning wine makers – the ritual Klingon Bloodwine was crafted with a bold Cabernet Sauvignon and features Klingon Warrior uniform patterns embedded into the bottle as well as a bold red hand-wax dipped finish. Emblazoned on the front of the bottle – the Klingon Proverb “Drink Now for Tomorrow We May Die” – in the original Klingon of course. As a hidden easter egg to fans, Star Trek Wines created four unique corks with four unique Klingon Proverbs.

Star Trek Wines

“We really got into this one. Working with the KLI and several other Klingon experts, the whole team got drawn into Mythology of the Klingon Culture; Honor, Duty and Tradition!” said Spencer Brewer, Head of Special Projects for Wine That Rock. “How into it you ask – we actually put out our Press Release in full Klingon! Batlh YItlhuhtlh! Qapla! "

With four bottles in its original collection, the team began to seek out inspiration for the next two releases for 2021. Adding to the United Federation of Planets series, it was decided to do something completely different. Something Blue…

Star Trek Wines 2021 Andorian Blue Premium Chardonnay features one-of-a-kind numbered bottles, but only on the first 2,161 bottles, a nod to the Star Date the Federation was formed and ratified by representatives from Earth, Vulcan, Andoria, and Tellar. In addition to the numbered bottles, Andorian Blue features an elegant silk screen design and a special United Federation of Planets metal medallion affixed to the front of the bottle. Dating back to Star Trek: The Original Series , blue spirits have long played a role in the Star Trek universe. The Andorian Blue Chardonnay, a premium Chardonnay from Santa Lucia Highlands, has a stellar blue color that pays homage to the colorful history of Star Trek spirits. Working together with a PHD food scientist, Star Trek wines began the process adding a touch of blue color to this delicious wine, aged 12 months prior to bottling, the Andorian Blue Chardonnay has notes of citrus, peach, and apricots. The sleek bottle design, coupled with the blue wine and metal medallion make for a stunning presentation, worthy of any bar in the universe.

Star Trek Wines

For the 6th wine in the collection – Star Trek Wines wanted a showstopper! With a lot of research and digging into the Star Trek Universe, it was Deep Space Nine ’s Cardassian Kanar bottle that really resonated with the team. And so, the quest to get their hands on one of the most coveted bottles ever used on the Star Trek series began.  But this bottle proved to be elusive and difficult to locate – which added its own mystique to the bottle.  After an exhaustive multiyear search, it was discovered that the actual bottle had not been manufactured since the mid-70’s. The solution? Star Trek Wines decided to re-engineer the bottle using the original show prop from Deep Space Nine and re-create it with 3D rendering technology. In partnership with CBS archives and the Star Trek team, the original show bottle and ornamental bottle topper were scanned and modeled utilizing 3D technology – generating a perfect clone from which to forge the 2021 Kanar.  “We’ve never forged our own bottle before” said Wines That Rock Head of Innovation Craig Spurrier. “Once we got our hands on the original bottle, our entire team fell in love with it. It's quintessential Star Trek so we decided to go for it. The result is truly amazing. Nobody has held this bottle in their hands and not said WOW!”

With bottle in hand, the next step was working with the team at Star Trek to get the original label and necker design. With the Kanar fully designed and freshly forged, it was time to bring in Award Winning Wine Maker Andrew Nelson, named “40 under 40 Tastemaker” by Wine Enthusiast as well as 2021 Industry Leader by Wine Business Monthly. Working together with Nelson, Star Trek Wines put together a delicious premium Red Wine Blend worthy of this one-of-a-kind bottle. To top it all off, a standard cork did not seem fitting for this bottle, so Cardassian Kanar comes with both the ornamental headpiece as seen in the original shows (also rendered in 3D) as well as a futuristic glass seal with the Cardassian symbol glowing from the top. The icing on the cake: Dr. Una McCormack, New York Times bestselling science fiction author known for her work with Star Trek , was kind enough to write the original liner notes.  All in all – perhaps one of the coolest and most interesting bottles of wine in the galaxy!

Star Trek Wines Announces Andorian Blue Chardonnay and Cardassian Kanar, Shipping in November

Two new Star Trek Wines made their debut at STLV — Andorian Blue Special Reserve Chardonnay and Cardassian Kanar Red Blend

kanar bottle star trek

Just in time for this year’s holiday season, Star Trek Wines has two new releases scheduled to start shipping in November — Andorian Blue Special Reserve Chardonnay and Cardassian Kanar Red Blend both made their debut on Tuesday at the 55-Year Mission convention in Las Vegas.

According to Star Trek Wines, the Andorian Blue will come in hand-numbered, limited edition bottles and feature a United Federation of Planets metal medallion. The Cardassian Kanar will also be hand-numbered and come with an ornamental topper and a glowing Cardassian logo glass seal.

These two new wines join the company’s previous releases that have included United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc and Old Vine Zinfandel, Klingon Bloodwine Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chateau Picard Cru Bordeaux.

Some additional information about each of the upcoming releases from Star Trek Wines is below.

New Star Trek Wines — Andorian Blue Special Reserve Chardonnay and Cardassian Kanar Red Blend

Andorian Blue Special Reserve Chardonnay

Third in a series of United Federation of Planet wines, the 2021 Andorian Blue Chardonnay features one-of-a-kind hand-numbered bottles, elegant silk screen designs and a special United Federation of Planets metal medallion affixed to the front of the bottle. Since the original Star Trek Series, blue spirits have long played a role in the Star Trek universe. The Andorian Blue Chardonnay, a premium Chardonnay from Santa Lucia Highlands, has a stellar blue color that pays homage to the history of colorful Star Trek spirits. Aged 12 months prior to bottling, the Andorian Blue has delicious notes of citrus, peach, and apricots. Bright, fresh acidity with a lush mouthfeel and long finish.

Cardassian Kanar Red Blend

Our second new release for 2021 features the Cardassian Kanar – long considered one of the ‘holy grail’ collectables in the Star Trek Universe. Utilized in both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine & Star Trek: The Next Generation, the story of Kanar is intimately connected with the rise of the Cardassian Union and the strong bonds which hold the Union together. In its quest for authenticity, the Star Trek Wines/Wines That Rock team conducted a rigorous multi-year search for an original Cardassian Kanar bottle, a unique ‘serpent-shaped’ vessel, originally utilized in the 1950’s through the 70’s in Europe. With only a handful of the original bottles found, the team at Star Trek Wines/Wines That Rock rendered the few remaining bottles in 3D for accuracy and worked with a specialized facility in Southern Italy to recreate and forge an identical replica, resulting in one of the most fascinating bottles in the Galaxy. Also replicated in a 3D rendering, this ornamental headpiece will be included with every bottle of Kanar. Rather than a traditional cork, the Kanar bottle also features a unique glass bottle seal complete with a glowing Cardassian logo. For the Kanar, our award-winning winemakers crafted this delicious, premium red blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Petite Verdot resulting in a dark, rich wine with notes of ripe blackberries and juicy blueberries, velvety tannins, and a long, delightful finish.

Two bottles of the Cardassian Kanar will cost $120, while two of the Andorian Blue will run you $120. If you’d prefer, Star Trek Wines also offers the two new wines together for $110, or in a “Full Armada” six-pack (which includes the two new wines and four previous releases) for $299.

Well that makes no sense – Kanar should be thick and brown, not thin and red. Jagermeister would be better suited. Blue wine is an abomination and should not be allowed near a wine drinker – you’d be better off using bubblegum flavoured alcopops

'Star Trek' Wine Goes Blue as Two More Aliens Get Their Own Bottles

With new Andorian and Cardassian varieties, Star Trek now has six official wines — and you can buy them all for $299.

Mike Pomranz has been covering craft beer for nearly two decades and trending food and beverage news for Food & Wine for 7 years.

kanar bottle star trek

Debuting in 1966, the original Star Trek TV series ran for just three seasons — but the media empire it spawned continues to proliferate to this day: spinoff series, movies, books, games, and more. Speaking of more, in 2019, Star Trek launched its own line of wines — and now, similar to the series itself, that wine collection is also continuing to expand: Star Trek Wines has just announced the addition of two more bottles to its now six-bottle lineup.

To recap, Star Trek Wines launched with two options — Chateau Picard Cru Bordeaux and United Federation of Planets Old Vine Zinfandel — produced in partnership with Wines That Rock. (If that name sounds familiar, it's because they also make wines for The Hallmark Channel , NPR , and Downton Abbey, along with their namesake rock band-themed products.) A year later, in 2020, two more wines joined the mix: Klingon Bloodwine and United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc.

Now, it's 2021, and as any serialized TV show knows, you need fresh content, so say hello to your latest season of Star Trek Wines: United Federation of Planets Special Reserve Andorian Blue Chardonnay (at $50 per bottle) and Cardassian Kanar Red Wine Blend (at $60 per bottle).

Since a fictional world can't produce (or even taste test) wines, as is often the case with these kinds of branded vinos, the look is as important as the liquid — and both these products are visually striking. (They're also all individually numbered to help hammer home their collectability.)

Incredibly, the Andorian Blue Chardonnay is literally blue , intended to pay "homage to the history of colorful Star Trek spirits." This unique hue is highlighted with a bottom-heavy clear bottle that is also adorned with "a special United Federation of Planets metal medallion." As for the wine, it's billed as "premium Chardonnay from Santa Lucia Highlands" that's been "aged 12 months prior to bottling and has delicious notes of citrus, peach and apricots."

As for the Cardassian Kanar Red Wine Blend, its eye-popping spiral bottle comes with its own backstory. "In a quest for authenticity, the team conducted a rigorous multi-year search for an original Cardassian Kanar bottle, a unique, serpent-shaped vessel, originally utilized in the 1950s through the 1970s in Europe," Star Trek Wines explains. "With only a handful of the original bottles found, the few remaining were rendered in 3D for accuracy in Southern Italy to recreate an identical replica, resulting in one of the most fascinating bottles in the Galaxy." As for the wine, the mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Petite Verdot is said to result "in a dark, rich wine with notes of ripe blackberries and juicy blueberries, velvety tannins, and a long, delightful finish."

Both new wines are available for presale at StarTrekWines.com . Or, if you want to buy the whole six-bottle collection — "The Full Armada" — it's currently available for $299. Orders containing the two new wines are slated to start shipping in November.

The first is a dark blue Rye Whiskey, describe as “a mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, giving a sweetness and flavor complexity after aging newly-charred white oak barrels.”

“We utilized a 150-year-old yeast strain, used in some extraordinary and well-known Rye whiskeys. After aging for 2+ years just across the Ohio River from Kentucky, it was ready for bottling.   But we took it a step further with second distilling process, creating an ultra-smooth finish, even at a very high bottle proof. In collaboration with a world-renowned food scientist, we opted for a rare and technologically advanced vacuum distillation process. Distillation under vacuum creates lower temperatures, enhancing both flavor and aromatics. We’d like to think that distillation in the future would also be done in similar low-pressure environments. As it turns out, distillation in a vacuum happens to make great whiskey!   The Rye graininess is apparent in the nose and initial taste on the tongue. Then comes that sweet brown note of vanilla creaminess and sweetness. It has the spicy peppery notes that all high rye whiskeys are known for in the finish, but ours is muted with dried fig, raisin and cherry fruitiness.”

The Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey can be ordered now for $85 USD per bottle, with shipments expected to begin in December 2022.

The second release is a lighter-blue colored Vodka product , with “a hint of corn sweetness, with higher notes from a plump smell of good wheat grain.”

“Distilled from premium Midwest grain, the vodka is produced in the Napa Area, distilled four times in a stainless steel still, to 192 proof to ensure a clean distillation of only the heart of the vodka then cut to 80 proofs for bottling.   Put together by a family of thirteen generation distillers, there are no trace of off notes or the smell of rubbing alcohol that many vodkas suffer from. A carefully done distillation. Touch of corn sweetness with the higher notes from a plump smell of good wheat grain.   Our Romulan Ale Blue Vodka has a fantastic electric blue appearance, with no sediment whatsoever. On swirling, it leaves a phenomenal blue coat on the inside of the glass with long thin legs. Wonderful bright appearance.   Unlike several other vodkas, this one is not highly filtered so you have a great body and mouthfeel that would otherwise be lost.

Fans who sign up for the  Star Trek Sprits  mailing list on their website will also get a complimentary vodka recipe for the “Quantum Singularity Cocktail,” named “in honor of the fuel source for Romulan ships.”

The Romulan Ale Rye Whiskey can be ordered now for $75 USD per bottle, with shipments expected to begin in December 2022.

The Star Trek Wine Sci-Fi Fans Should Know About

Collection of Star Trek wines

As if there needed to be another subject of debate between the "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" franchises, "Star Trek" has just released two new wines , one of them blue (via Food & Wine ). And it just might be better than the "Star Wars" blue milk, a drink exclusively available at  Star Wars Galaxy's Edge  theme park located at Disney World and Disneyland. Of course, it's entirely up to fans to decide if they'd rather be drinking alien milk or blue spirits, but Star Trek Wines went to great lengths to ensure their product was of the highest quality. Along with the blue wine, which goes by the name Andorian Blue Chardonnay, Star Trek Wines also have released a Cardassian Kanar Red Wine Blend.

"In a quest for authenticity, the team conducted a rigorous multi-year search for an original Cardassian Kanar bottle, a unique, serpent-shaped vessel, originally utilized in the 1950s through the 1970s in Europe," Food & Wine reports. "With only a handful of the original bottles found, the few remaining were rendered in 3D for accuracy in Southern Italy to recreate an identical replica." The Andorian Blue Chardonnay packaging is made just as uniquely, and each bottle features one-of-a-kind silk screened designs and a United Federation of Planets medallion. According to Star Trek Wines , there are only 2,161 bottles of the Blue Chardonnay available, and each is hand-numbered.

The Star Trek Wines taste as good as they look

Star Trek Wines, however, are not just about the collectible bottles. For as much dedication as the brand puts into the appearance, they also put that much effort into the taste. Andorian Blue Chardonnay is a special reserve Chardonnay produced in Santa Lucia Highlands and aged for 12 months to produce "bright, fresh acidity with a lush mouthfeel and long finish," the official  website explains. The flavor is slightly sweet with fruity notes of citrus, peach, and apricots.

The Cardassian Kanar Red Wine Blend, crafted by award-winning winemakers, is a premium blend of red wine consisting of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah, and Petite Verdot. The flavor is rich and fruity, "with notes of ripe blackberries and juicy blueberries, velvety tannins, and a long, delightful finish," according to the retail site.

TrekNews.net  reports that these two new wines debuted in August 2021 at the Star Trek Las Vegas Convention, though preordering is already open on the Star Trek Wines website, and shipping officially begins November 2021. Andorian Blue and Cardassian Kanar Red are being sold in a two-pack called "The Duet" that's priced at $110.

The two new bottles add to Star Trek Wines' existing collection, that first went to market in 2019, and also include Chateau Picard Cru Bordeaux, United Federation of Planets Old Vine Zinfandel, Klingon Bloodwine, and United Federation of Planets Sauvignon Blanc. A six-bottle pack of the entire collection is $299, per Food & Wine , but considering you finally get to experience a literal taste of intergalactic life, we'd say it's well worth it.

The Kanar Sazerac

Star trek debuts.

Kanar Sazerac Star Trek drink

The Kanar Sazerac is Drink of the Day to commemorate debut of the TV series Star Trek on September 8, 1966.  Their mission: to boldly drink where no man has drunk before.  The crew of the Enterprise did this well, discovering concoctions from around the universe, and while the original series is long gone the franchise continues its explorations.  Today we need a Star Trek cocktail.

The Origins of Star Trek

It all began in 1964 when Gene Roddenberry drafted a story line for a sort of science fiction western set in the 23 rd century.  He presented drafts to Desilu Productions, a leading independent TV production company led by Lucille Ball, the scatterbrained redhead you know from the I Love Lucy show.  She was actually a savvy businesswoman, the first woman to head a Hollywood studio, and stinking rich.

Desilu Productions had a first-look deal with CBS and took the concept there, but CBS refused to purchase the show because they already had Lost in Space in development.  So CBS ended up with a show featuring a robot that would say “Danger, Will Robinson!” which is all anyone remembers about it.  After the CBS rejection Desilu took the show to NBC, which commissioned a pilot.  But it wasn’t a one-and-done affair.

NBC turned down that pilot in the belief that it was “too cerebral.”  They liked the concept and made the unusual decision to pay for a second pilot.  The second pilot retained only Leonard Nimoy as Spock and was satisfactory to NBC.  It was a go ahead.  That second pilot introduced the world to Captain Kirk, Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Helmsman Lt. Sulu, Communications Officer Uhura and Dr. Piper, with Dr. McCoy taking over the role when the actual season filming began.  (You’re probably thinking we forgot about Chekov, but he didn’t show up until Season 2.)

Drinking on Star Trek

The drinking started with the first pilot episode.  In The Cage Captain Christopher Pike of the Starship Enterprise was captured while investigating a distress call from a survey mission that crashed on the planet Talos IV.

At one point Captain Pike was dubious about heading as far as Talos IV to look for survivors.  He summoned the chief medical officer Dr. Boyce to his quarters.  That led to Boyce offering Pike a Martini and noting “Sometimes a man’ll tell his bartender things he’ll never tell his doctor.”  Soon enough Spock communicated from the bridge and the mission was back on.

While drinking started with the familiar Martini that’s not exactly a Star Trek drink.  Andorian Ale, Draylaxian Whiskey, Saurian Brandy, Temtibi Lagoon, Klingon Blood Wine and many others, often in striking colors.  The most famous was Romulan Ale, but that has been banned in the United Federation of Planets since 2285.  The Enterprise-D under Captain Picard even had its own bar, Ten Forward.  Sadly, by that time Federation ships only poured the dreaded, non-intoxicating Synthahol.  The Federation’s legal department may have decided that piloting Starships while drinking was a bad idea.  Guinan the bartender was known to always have a few bottles of the good stuff stashed away to help morale.

Star Trek characters also indulged in wines like the 2343 vintage of Chateau Mouton Rothschild.  Captain Picard himself came from a winemaking family.  A tip for wine lovers:  the 2386 Chateau Picard is a particularly good vintage.  You might want to buy futures now.

To find a Start Trek cocktail as Drink of the Day we tread that fine line between the familiar and the bizarre.  We’re only using ingredients readily available on this planet.  Today it’s the Kanar Sazerac, created by bartender and cocktail writer John deBary.  It doesn’t use actual Kanar, which is unavailable on this side of the Alpha Quadrant, but would still probably be acceptable to the imperialistic Cardassians.  (Note: at this time our Editorial Board has been unable to confirm any direct relation to the Kardashians but the investigation is ongoing.)

The Kanar Sazerac is similar in concept to the Sazerac , which we enjoyed for Mardi Gras.  The Kanar Sazerac splits its base spirit between cognac and Fernet Branca and makes use of bitters instead of absinthe.

I just tried coming up with a recipe for kanar and took a different route than using things that are normally pleasant in a drink. Here's what I did: 1 tablespoon molasses 1 tablespoon syrup 1 tablespoon vodka 1/2 tablespoon worcestershire sauce Now, the vodka should probably be substituted for something a little darker and more rich like Captain Morgan 100 proof (I'm not exactly stocked up right now), but I think I've nailed the drink for the most part. It is palatable, but would take some getting used to just like Glinn Daro said.

http://karosyrup.com/ According to an interview with Casey Biggs (Damar), Karo syrup was used for brown kanar to create the effect of a dark, thick liquid, which he actually drank. Property Master Joe Longo joked in an issue of Star Trek: The Magazine (Issue 4) that "... he was drinking so much he was getting weird, so we started using a thickened sugar-free pancake syrup."

maybe you should try and make a drink with it almaretto butter schotch or something?

They say it takes some getting used to - Why not use Salmari (Finnish licorice vodka) as a base?

5 Times Star Trek: The Next Generation's Holodeck Was A Big Problem

  • Holodeck malfunctions caused problems for the USS Enterprise-D crew in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • The holodeck provided a balance of fun and danger in various episodes, highlighting its impact on the crew.
  • The holodeck's impact on characters like Lt. Barclay and Commander Riker showcased its influence on individual crew members.

The holodeck was one of the most popular aspects of Star Trek: The Next Generation , but it continuously caused a lot of big problems for the crew of the USS Enterprise-D. First introduced in season one of TNG, the holodeck used pre-programmed holographic displays to create highly lifelike simulations , and crew members were free to interact with the generated environment. While the holodeck iwas commonly used to train officers, it was usually a means for characters in Star Trek: The Next Generation to relax and unwind with fun and entertaining simulations.

The holodeck gave the USS Enterprise-D a reprieve from space travel and the stresses of being a member of Starfleet. Many of Star Trek: The Next Generation 's best episodes involve the holodeck, but more often than not, the programming ends up malfunctioning, and the consequences wreak havoc on the ship . Safety protocols meant to prevent simulations from causing actual harm to the crew often failed or were tampered with by outside forces. The holodeck adventures of Star Trek: The Next Generation are always entertaining despite the predictable technology breakdowns, but these 5 episodes highlight the holodeck's ability to balance fun and danger.

Star Treks 20 Best Holodeck Episodes

Star Trek's holodecks entertain, fulfill fantasies, heal old wounds, train cadets, and malfunction badly, as seen in these 20 best episodes.

"The Big Goodbye"

Star trek: the next generation season 1, episode 12.

Star Trek 's first holodeck episode was "The Big Goodbye" in season 1 of Star Trek: The Next Generation . In need of a break from rigorous Starfleet protocols, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner), Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), and visiting historian Dr. Whalen (David Selburg) use the holodeck to enter one of Picard's favorite simulations involving his holodeck alter-ego, private investigator Dixon Hill. Clad in 1940s-style attire, the three visitors quickly find themselves in a perilous situation thanks to a holodeck malfunction when an alien probe scans the Enterprise and shuts off the holodeck's safety features.

When encountering an adversary inside the program, Dr. Whalen is shot with a 20th-century bullet. Dr. Crusher is luckily there to aid the injured historian, but without modern medical equipment, she can't promise his safety. However, Captain Picard and Lt. Commander Data discover that the holodeck is locked, and they're stuck inside. It takes the outside help of Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) and Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) to end the program. However, the malfunction leads a character in the simulation to wonder if their world is artificial, foreshadowing further holodeck plot development involving computer sentience.

"Elementary, Dear Data"

Star trek: the next generation season 2, episode 3.

A popular use of the holodeck is recreational use during downtime on the Enterprise, and Lt. Commanders Data and Geordi La Forge frequent the holodeck for this reason. While waiting for a Starfleet rendezvous, Data and La Forge use the holodeck to explore a Sherlock Holmes mystery as 19th-century investigators. Mr. Data acts as a human Sherlock Holmes but ruins the fun by proving his memorization of all Holmes stories. He returns with La Forge, now accompanied by the ship's new chief medical officer Dr. Pulaski, and they ask the computer to create an adversary capable of defeating Data.

Moriarty remains conscious in the holodeck and would return years later in TNG season 6.

The adversary quickly kidnaps Pulaski and is soon revealed as the classic Sherlock Holmes villain, Professor Moriarty (Daniel Davis). While attempting to rescue the ship's doctor, Lt. Commander La Forge and Commander Data quickly realize that the Moriarty simulation knows he is a hologram. Geordi realizes he made the computer create a program that could defeat Data, not Holmes, so Moriarty has the intelligence to access the ship's computer. Captain Picard meets Moriarty and rejects the professor's attempt to live in the real world, but he promises to research a way to release him. Moriarty remains conscious in the holodeck and would return years later in TNG season 6.

"Hollow Pursuits"

Star trek: the next generation season 3, episode 21.

As Star Trek: The Next Generation progressed, the holodeck became a more prominent plot device, and so did its effects on certain crew members. Lieutenant Reginald Barcley (Dwight Schultz), an extremely nervous and painfully awkward engineer, finds solace in his self-programmed simulations of the Enterprise crew. However, his frequent trips to the holodeck contribute to his poor performance. Instead of transferring him to another ship, Captain Picard tells Lt. Commander La Forge to take the bumbling Lieutenant Barclay under his wing. Trying to support him, La Forge visits Barclay on the holodeck but discovers the simulation of the bridge crew.

Lt. Barclay creates overblown versions of the ship's crew as he wants to see them. Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is a short, comical version of the real thing, Wesley Crusher is a lazy, selfish idiot, and simulations of female crew members Dr. Beverly Crusher and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) are designed to please and appease Barclay. The episode's crisis, which involved contaminated crew members that forced the ship into uncontrolled warp speed, is solved with Barclay's help. The consequences of his holodeck obsession cause Lt. Barclay to delete all but one of his saved simulation programs.

"Ship in a Bottle"

Star trek: the next generation season 6, episode 12.

Using the holodeck to blow off steam again, Lt. Commanders Data and Geordi La Forge revisit their Sherlock Holmes mystery simulation. However, they start to notice irregularities in the program. They ask Lieutenant Barclay to investigate, but in doing so, he accidentally activates the sentient Professor James Moriarty program from "Elementary, Dear Data." Moriarty, alarmingly even more conscious and cunning than before, expresses his irritation at the Enterprise's crew's inability to free him from the holodeck. Angry, Moriarty leaves the program altogether, explaining himself only by quoting the philosopher Descartes: "I think, therefore I am."

In another philosophical allegory common in Star Trek: The Next Generation , Moriarty programs a companion, Regina Bartholomew (Stephanie Beacham), taken from another conscious mind in the holodeck's Sherlock Holmes stories. Despite his own existence remaining unexplained, Moriarty demands Regina be removed from the holodeck. He ends up trapping the Enterprise's crew inside their own simulation, and he only releases them when Captain Picard promises to help him. Moriarty might be smarter than Data , but Picard tricks him into believing he and Regina board a shuttle and leave the Enterprise. In reality, Moriarty and Regina are still in another holodeck simulation.

A different version of tbe Professor Moriarty holographic program appeared in Star Trek: Picard season 3.

"Future Imperfect"

Star trek: the next generation season 4, episode 8.

As an intelligent and determined First Officer, Commander Will Riker remains fairly unflappable in Star Trek: The Next Generation , but the holodeck manages to threaten even his strongest beliefs. After a celebratory party for his birthday, Riker accompanies Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge and Lieutenant Worf to Alpha Onias III to investigate strange sensor readings. Almost immediately, the three officers are knocked out by toxic gases. When the Enterprise's First Officer wakes up, he finds that he's seemingly missed 16 years of his life. He discovers he is Captain of the Enterprise and has a son named Ethan.

Struggling to accept his new life, Commander Riker notices inconsistencies regarding the Enterprise and its crew. The computer is lagging, and even Geordi can't fix it. Riker knows he's being tricked when he learns the deceased mother of Ethan was Minuet, a holodeck simulation he once fell in love with. It's soon revealed that Riker is in a Romulan holodeck program, but even that is yet another simulation. Finally, Commander Riker finds himself back on Alpha Onias III, and Ethan reveals himself as a stranded gray alien who created the ruse to experience genuine companionship.

Commander Rikers 10 Best Star Trek TNG Episodes, Ranked

Jonathan Frakes has become a Star Trek icon in his own right with some great moments as Commander William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

While the holodeck in Star Trek: The Next Generation was anything but perfect, its malfunctions taught the crew of the USS Enterprise-D valuable lessons about bravery and self-control, and sometimes even shifted their ideals about basic morality. Star Trek: The Next Generation 's characters wouldn't have been able to evolve without the holodeck's chaos, as many of their most prominent and memorable storylines occurred in or because of holodeck programs gone awry. Despite its many pitfalls, Star Trek: The Next Generation 's holodeck allowed the show to explore narratives from outside the Enterprise - while never leaving the ship.
