The Definitive Guide to a Jeep Safari in Dubai

We sped up a sand dune at a steep 45-degree angle. All I could see was bright blue sky, the occasional fluffy cloud, and that was it. The blue abyss.

Then, suddenly, we plummeted down the other side of the dune at breakneck speed, everyone in the car screaming with a mixture of fear and delight. When I signed up for a jeep safari in Dubai, I had no idea it’d be this much fun!

If you’re looking for one of the best things to do in United Arab Emirates then look no further than a Dubai jeep safari. This is when you take a 4X4 jeep out into the desert and thrash it around the sand dunes. It’s one of those high-octane activities that’ll keep you grinning from ear to ear all day long.

In this blog post I’ll go into everything you need to know about going on a jeep safari in Dubai including how much a tour costs, what’s included in the price and a load of other practical information too.

My Dubai jeep safari experience

There are a number of tours to choose from online but I wanted one that was a mixture of adrenaline and culture . And yes, they do exist!

All of the tours offer hotel pick up and drop off, so I was picked up from my hotel in the afternoon at around 3pm. One of the most popular pick up points is from Jumeirah Beach. We also picked up a few other people so there were 5 of us in total in our jeep (including our driver Hussan.)

The Masyaf Desert is approximately 40kms away from Dubai, so it’s a fair drive. Also, because you’re driving through the traffic of the city this can take well over an hour. I sat in the front so I got to quiz Hussan all about living in Dubai and the tour for the afternoon. He promised me I’d scream like I’ve never screamed before. It sounded a little perverse but I liked that guarantee!

Once you leave the city behind though it’s easy driving until you start seeing the rolling sand dunes and camels lazily crossing the road. I love that there are camels just wandering here – it makes you feel like you’re in Lawrence of Arabia .

When we hit the edge of the desert, our driver Hussan let out most of the air in our jeep tires. This makes it a lot easier driving across the sand dunes as you get more traction.

From that point on it was pure adrenaline. Hussan thrashed our car around the desert with all of us screaming in delight. We flew over sand dunes so fast I thought we’d topple over other side, and at times so much sand was in the air that it completely covered our windscreen.

Even though it was the edge-of-your-seat driving (the whole point of the Dubai jeep safari experience), it never felt like we were going to crash at any point at all.

It was just pure, unadulterated fun and I can’t recommend this experience enough. And I did scream like I’ve never screamed before!

The Bedouin camp experience

The jeep safari lasted for around 30 minutes which is probably the right about of time. Any longer and I would’ve burst a lung from shouting so much.

Once we had finished up, all the jeeps on our tour parked in a circle just as the sun was starting to set. There are so many dunes here that it’s easy to hide behind one and not be seen by the other Dubai desert safari tours, so it feels secluded and like you’ve got the place to yourself.

As you’d expect being in the heart of the desert, the sunset was spectacular. Just make sure you bring your camera along to take some shots of it. I mean, look at how beautiful this place is.

As soon as the sun dipped below the horizon we jumped back in our jeeps and headed off to a Bedouin camp for the cultural element of our tour.

The Bedouin experience consisted of sitting around a camp site in the middle of the desert listening to Arabic music. After a while a couple of dancers came out – first a traditional belly dancer and then a Whirling Dervish . How they keep on spinning without being sick I will never know!

All while this is going on there’s a big buffet dinner of traditional Arabic meze and it was delicious. Also, you can buy alcoholic drinks like beer which is a massive surprise in the UAE . All soft drinks are included in the price.

Our camp also had a fairly big sand dune you could climb up and then sandboard back down for another fun activity.

And the stars, how could I not mention the stars! I really recommend walking away from the lights of the camp and staring up at the night sky because it is absolutely beautiful.

Once the music and dancing had finished, we jumped back in our jeeps to head back into Dubai after an incredible day in the desert.

Desert safari price: How much does it cost?

Good question! There are a number of different tour to choose from and the cost varies quite a lot.

Some tours include additional extras like camel safari or an ATV experience in the desert, so obviously these cost a lot more.

Saying that, I thought my tour was extremely good value . It cost £42 (US$50) per person and as I’ve mentioned, that included hotel pick up and drop off, all food and drink, and the desert safari experience in itself.

Just as a note, you might see these tours advertised as Dubai dune bashing – that’s just another name for the same tour.

Desert safari deals

I would always advise checking what desert safari deals are around when you’re in Dubai.

If you’re short on time though, I’ve found this tour at GetYourGuide is consistently one of the cheapest around so this is always a good place to start. The often have deals so make sure you keep checking before you book!

Different desert safari tours

There are so many different desert safari tours that it’d take me forever listing them all here, but these are the three most popular:

• Dubai: Hot Air Balloon Ride – this is one of the best air balloon rides you can do in the United Arab Emirates
• Dubai Desert Safari Sandboarding, Camels & Quad Bike – this is an excellent tour if you’d prefer to go earlier in the morning
• Heritage Desert Safari from Dubai – often this includes driving around in a vintage Land Rover in the Dubai desert conservation reserve

Are there other people on the tour?

Yes, there are.

Because there are a number of different tours and companies, often you’ll drive in a big convoy of cars. We had around 12 other cars on our Dubai jeep safari, so you will be with other people.

Saying that, we didn’t really speak to that many other people apart from other couple in our jeep. Once we got to the Bedouin camp we had a table to ourselves, so this is a great experience for couples.

Is a desert safari safe?

Yes, it is. Obviously as this is a high-adrenaline activity it’s not advised to do it if you’re pregnant or elderly.

Also, because you’re being thrown around the car, beware of hitting your head or your arms on the car windows. That’s pretty much the only way you can hurt yourself.

For the jeep, also beware that you can break down. Most tours bring a back-up jeep, so if you do break down then you’ll quickly be moved to another jeep so you don’t miss out on the experience.

Top tips for your jeep safari in Dubai

• If you suffer from car sickness make sure you take some tablets before you hit the desert. You really get thrown around in the back on the jeep and at times it feels like a rollercoaster, so take those travel sickness pills! It’s advised you take these an hour before the tour.
• For men I’d recommend flip-flops or espadrilles and for women sandals. Sand gets everywhere and it’s annoying if you’ve got trainers on
• Also, I’d recommend bringing a hut and sunglasses are an absolute must to avoid the glare off the sand
• Like most deserts around the world, as soon as the sun sets it can get pretty cold. Make sure you take an extra layer of clothes with you for the evening
• If you want to buy beer or some souvenirs at the Bedouin camp then bring along some money
• It’s also a good idea to tip your driver for the day too

For me, the desert jeep safari was one of my favourite activities while I was in the UAE . It’s that perfect mix of doing something fun in the afternoon and then something cultural in the evening.

Jeep Desert Safari Dubai

Your safari guide will come get you in a big 4×4 jeep for the “ Dubai Desert Safari ” adventure with a BBQ dinner. It’s a short 45-minute ride from the center of Dubai. We’ve planned some fun evening events in the desert, and each one has a special surprise for you to remember.

Dune Bashing in Jeep

Ride up and down the big sand hills in a jeep! Dune bashing in Dubai is like a roller coaster on sand. It’s a thrilling ride that’ll make you hold tight and smile wide!

Once you get free from dune bashing, the driver will stop at any high dune so you can take pictures in the open desert. The photo stop will be a maximum of 10 minutes. 

Camel Ride & Quad Biking

Then he will take you to our desert safari camp in the Al Aweer area. After reaching our campsite, you get the opportunity to enjoy the short trip of camel ride .

You can extend the camel ride time by paying extra. The driver will assist you with the ride and the quad bikes.

Quad bikes are also located outside the camp. Unfortunately, quad biking is not included in our basic package, and you must pay extra.

Your safari captain will wait for you to get free from camel rides and quad bikes. Then he will highlight all the activities included in the evening desert safari with a bbq dinner tour and lead you to your table.

Desert Safari Camp Activites

While entering our desert camp, you are welcomed with Gahwa (Arabic coffee), Gaymat (sweets), and dates. You will have an unlimited soft drinks supply in our evening safari camp. Kandora and Abaya, “Arabian clothes” for men and women, are also available to wear and take pictures. “Due to covid”, it’s not included in the  Dubai evening desert safari.

Enjoy your free time at the Dubai desert safari   Camp by trying different activities. Like Shisha smoking, the Henna painting is only for ladies. Meet the Falcon expert and have pictures with the royal bird.

There are so many hidden gems to be found across the UAE, with many discovered when spending a day on a Wadi Adventure. When you head out of the city and into the country, you will find stunning mountainous landscapes that are eye-catching and breathtaking in equal measure. What’s more, there’s an array of historical sites that tell the story of the UAE, from a time long before how it currently looks today.

The Wadi Adventure tour is a memorable adventure that uncovers the natural beauty of the UAE. Starting from your hotel or residence, the tour takes you on a trip across some of the most beautiful, cultural and enriching sights the country offers.

The tour begins in Sharjah, at Fossil Rock. Owing to its name, Fossil Rock is a landmark where fossils millions of years old can be held in your hands. This first stop of the tour sets the tone for the rest of your journey, as there is vast outstanding beauty and incredible heritage to be discovered here.

From here, the tour continues to the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, where the country’s caves, wadis and archaeological sites are showcased across an eye-catching exhibition. There will be plenty of photo opportunities available at Wadi Shawka Pools, before heading across to Buhais Geology Park.

Buhais Geology Park is an education centre assembled next to a series of tombs and other historical landmarks. Here, you will find remnants of the country’s ancient past, and signs of civilisation from many centuries ago. A scenic drive over to Wadi Helo for a leisurely exploration will then follow, on our way to the East Coast of the UAE for a picturesque lunch stop.

The Wadi Adventures tour is for lovers of history, nature, and experiencing the path less travelled. While the bright lights of downtown and the golden sandy beaches are Dubai’s signature appeal, a day away from the mainstream will leave you feeling charmed and enriched.

• Pickup from your hotel or residence will be between 8am – 9am. A time will be confirmed with you prior to the activity, and we request for your group to be ready 15 minutes prior to the confirmed pickup time
• Both shared and private vehicle options are available for the Wadi Adventures tour. Our vehicles accommodate up to 4 people
• This is a full-day tour, which will involve outdoor activity for most of the day. We advise bringing suncream, sunglasses and a hat
• During the Wadi Adventures tour, we will be visiting sites with historical and cultural significance. We request that you adhere to the modest dress code requirements
• Food, beverages, and entrance tickets to any venues are included as part of your experience
• We do not recommend this activity for guests who are pregnant or have pre-existing medical conditions

• Full payment for your booking is required at least two days prior to your activity. If payment is not received before the expected date, we reserve the right to cancel your activity
• In exceptional circumstances, we may have to amend the Wadi Adventures schedule, or cancel the activity entirely. We reserve the right to amend and cancel activities in such circumstances, and will ensure we communicate any changes in advance where possible

How will it happen?

The tour begins with transfer from a hotel in Dubai. The guests will be picked up by a comfortable air-conditioned bus. Next we are going to the sand dunes to have a breathtaking off-road ride experience. Going up and suddenly down, we will test our vestibular apparatuses. Unlocking The Wild: A First-Hand Account Of A Dubai Safari Park Adventure

Surpassing its futuristic architecture and dip into innovation, Dubai is a city that knows how to pluck out global experiences and have them make a grand appearance in its city. Taking inspiration from the African animal safari, Dubai re-created that experience by opening up its own Safari Park at Al Warqa 5.

Divided into different zones, each with its own geographical theme, the park boasts the African village, the Asian village, and Al Wadi. It was an unmissable opportunity, so during our visit to Dubai, we decided to drop it a visit and see if it was actually worth the hype.

Through our experience, we were able to create a guide that includes everything, from prices to dos and don’ts.

Knowing that it’s a massive park of 119 hectares , it’s easy to get overwhelmed and feel like you have to get up early and arrive at 10 a.m. to visit the entire area, especially knowing that the park closes at 5 p.m.

On visiting the park, we found out that even if you arrive at 1 p.m., you’ll be able to visit the entire park before the clock strikes 5. Arriving at the entrance, we headed to the ticket counter, where a large glass-paneled display showcased four different packages to choose from.

We went for the 90-Dirham Safari Journey Package, which is probably the best option to truly experience the entire park. It has the actual replicated 35-minute safari bus tour as well as a 10-minute open bus Arabian desert safari experience. Along with that, you get free bus transportation to the entire park and its zones instead of having to walk.

African Village

Home to more than 3,000 animals, Dubai Safari Park is the perfect way to meet all the animals and learn new information about each one.

Across the park, the African village is a must-go-to, as it’s the biggest and has lots of animals, from lions to hippos, elephants, and giraffes.

At a typical zoo, there are square plaques in front of each cage with dense and boring information about the animals inside. Dubai Safari Park takes that boring technique and throws it out the window. Instead, you’ll find cool, interactive displays throughout the park.

For example, at the Chimpanzee House, they have a cool display of life-sized replicas of the hands of each type of ape, including gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans.

Guests get to place their hands on the replicated counterparts to compare their size to that of the monkeys. Turns out, the hands of the chimpanzee are very similar to our own.

Now, let’s take a journey to our next stop: Explorer Village, home to the safari journey experience.

Safari Journey

Unlike animal safaris in Africa, where the tour is usually done in an open-aired jeep, in Dubai, you get the safari experience in the comfort of a bus with expansive glass windows for a full view of the animals.

This wasn’t just any bus, as throughout the 35-minute trip, it was close to the animals to the point where a tiger was right below us, and we could see the minute details of each of its large black stripes.

In addition to being so close to animals, such as getting an up-close look at a lion’s gaping mouth and teeth as he took a massive yawn while perched on a rock, we got to learn cool nuggets of information from the guide sitting at the front of the bus.

She taught us about animals as we passed through more than 25 zones and got to see everything from crocodiles, buffalos, lions, tigers, and hippos to rhinos, zebras, baboons, antelopes, hyenas, and giraffes.

Giraffe Feeding

After the safari tour, you’ll find yourself back at Explorer Village. For the adventurous souls, the giraffe feeding zone at the village is a must-do.

Bear in mind you’ll have to pay 15 Dirhams for a pack of 5 peeled carrots to feed the giraffe. Feeding them is quite the experience, as they have elongated purple tongues akin to octopus tentacles that wiggle and move at rapid speeds.

We decided to have fun with the experience by wafting the carrot left and right to tease the giraffe. It was fun seeing it swoop in with its tongue and slurp the entire carrot into its throat in a rapid motion.

For anyone who loves farm animals, this is the place to go since you’ll get to touch and play with cows, donkeys, goats, and chickens. We got to pat a baby cow that had these deep, large black coal eyes, which is an experience we always wanted to try.

Besides the farm, there’s a caged space that’s home to the green parakeet. On entering, you’re given sunflower seeds to feed the green parakeets.

It’s super fun, as you merely reach out to them with an open-faced palm full of seeds, and you’ll find them either plucking them out of your hand or jumping onto your wrist and nibbling on their favorite meal. If you’re lucky, you might find one on top of your head or on your shoulder if they’re feeling extra friendly.

Asia Village

The park is a great experience, and what’s indicative of that is there was only one zone that we felt wasn’t worth the visit: the Asian village. It’s not only small in size, but it also houses 4 animals, all of which you could barely see as they’re pretty inactive, especially the black bear, which was hiding and sleeping behind a massive bridge.

All in all, visiting Dubai Safari Park is a fun, unique, and out-of-the-box experience that can be enjoyed in the city. It’s also a great and interactive way to learn about several animals in a way that’s not boring and overtly educational.
