As you explore this three-mile-long island, you’ll have plenty of chances to spot many bird species and other wild creatures such as deer, raccoons, and turtles.

Beachcombers love checking out the beautiful beaches, especially the one known as the Boneyard. It’s not actual bones that line this unique stretch of coast; it’s just tree stumps that have been bleached by the sun but it’s a great place for photo ops nonetheless! 

18. Saint Helena Island

Saint Helena Island is different from many of the other islands around South Carolina because it’s an inland island. Amid inland  South Carolina 's year-round bliss – in  Charleston , Columbia and Greenville – the state’s shoreline particularly pops come summertime.

South of Myrtle Beach and stretching to the Georgia state line where Savannah awaits, you’ll find South Carolina's Sea Islands, a stretch of islands each with their own unique ambiance and summer flair.

Your options include the family-friendly and golf haven of Hilton Head, the historic downtown of Beaufort and more secluded options for bird-watching and fishing galore. As you finalize your Palmetto State summer itinerary, there are some key logistical must-knows to truly soak it all in. Here’s the scoop on South Carolina's Sea Islands.

Step 1: Pick a home base

Hilton head island.

Vibes: Consider this your island destination for staying occupied yet tranquil. Hilton Head is renowned for white-sand bliss, a small-town core and big-time resorts. This is the best option for a family vacation, too, with plenty of quirky activities spanning zip-lining its marshes to an extensive go-kart track, all of which you can find at Adventure Hilton Head  and other island spots.

Do: Hilton Head is a golfing destination with nearly 30 courses island-wide. Sea Pines Resort is a top pick, with three courses within its confines, including Harbour Town, which hosts the PGA Tour’s RBC Heritage tournament. Otherwise, plop on a beach – Coligny Beach is fully equipped with restrooms, gazebos and benches for a seamless experience.

Stay: The Sweetgrass Inn at Hilton Head Health puts wellness front and center with daily health retreats, nutrition workshops and, for longer stays, a weight loss track, if desired. Beach House is laid-back, with an on-site tiki hut and recently renovated pool.

Eat: Hit Skull Creek Boathouse for a sunset and, within its on-site Dive Bar space, fresh sushi selections. Nectar Farm Kitchen has southern coastal fare down to an art, with sweet potato pancakes and hearty-portioned chicken and waffles.

Folly Beach

Vibes: A 20-minute drive south of Charleston, this is where residents of “the Holy City” head to unwind in the summer. The southern hospitality and general friendliness of Charleston oozes into its beachy neighbor, where locals trade in their bowties and pastel dresses for swim trunks and swimsuits. Its ocean’s edge is dotted with surf shops – like McKevlin’s and Ocean Surf Shop – with a spot known as the Washout being where veteran surfers flock for swells.

Do: For surfing newbies, take a lesson with local mainstays like Isla Surf School or Shaka Surf School , the latter of which hosts kids' summer camps and a Saturday surf and yoga class for women. Folly Beach has a unique saltwater creek and coastal marsh landscape – you can learn all about it and hunt for some shark teeth along the way with a Charleston Outdoor Adventures eco tour .

Stay: For views, each room at the Tides Folly Beach comes with a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Its on-site BLU Beach Bar & Grill has a tiki bar and one-of-a-kind vistas of the Folly Beach Pier which juts into the ocean next door. Regatta Inn is the island’s luxe bed-and-breakfast option, with a daily breakfast spread and golf cart shuttle to the beach.

Eat: Folly Beach is loaded with beach bars with fare and booze that run the full spectrum of no-frills to fancy. Lowlife Bar has a daily brunch from 10am to 3pm with a memorable Maryland-style crab cake, chicken and waffles and a pimento cheese plate. Three blocks off the beach, Jack of Cup Saloons serves up craft brews and sake with a variety of Indian and Asian-inspired dishes.

Edisto Island

Vibes: Approximately 50 miles southeast of Charleston, this island is dotted with beachside rentals on stilts, stately plantation abodes and stunning beaches. This is a more relaxed vibe compared to Hilton Head or Folly Beach, with plenty of quirky entertaining things to keep you occupied. An example – and not for the faint of heart – is the Edisto Island Serpentarium , with habitats for a variety of snakes, alligators and turtles.

Do: Edisto Beach State Park is arguably the hot spot for collecting shells in the state. Botany Bay is a marshy, bird-watching paradise where shorebirds, wild turkeys and egrets abound. This is a quiet spot for a sunset cruise, too, with Botany Bay Ecotours being a go-to operator.

Stay: Vacation rentals are the norm here. A conglomerate of rentals owned by Wyndham on the southwestern tip of the island offers the most options in a singular place. For golfers, there is a course – the Plantation Course – in the middle of the complex.

Eat: Cute and homegrown are the general culinary vibes on the island. McConkey’s Jungle Shack serves up wings, burgers, wild rum punch concoctions and a famed local sweet tea. Sea Cow Eatery is an intimate diner that’s open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (minus Monday when it closes at 2pm). Regardless of what time of day it is, keep an eye on its ever-changing homemade pie selections.

Step 2: Book your accommodations

Vacation rentals abound along South Carolina’s coast. In general, individual owners or operating entities open up summer reservations either a year in advance or six months in advance, though it may vary. VRBO, AirBnb and HomeToGo are statewide favorites for rentals. Additionally, you may want to check the state’s tourism website for additional sanctioned options as well as local chambers of commerce.

Across the board on South Carolina’s sea islands, there are options for plopping it at a resort, within a vacation home or at a bed and breakfast and making memories solely on-property. If you’re looking to keep antsy guests or kids occupied, Hilton Head boasts the most things to do. Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort is perhaps the best of all worlds – quietly tucked on the northern edge of the island, exuding a casual vibe with a water slide and within minutes of shopping at Shelter Cove Harbour .

Step 3: Plan your days

Hilton Head is considered a fishing utopia, where spot-tailed trout, flounder, grouper and even sharks abound. Hilton Head is one of the largest breeding grounds for sharks on the East Coast and, yes, you can fish for them, too. You’ll need to charter a fishing boat – ideally with a captain, too, to make it seamless – and for that FishingBooker is trusted and up-to-date.

Beyond the islands, three city visits may be easily pinned to any South Carolina sea islands itinerary. Savannah, Georgia is within a 45-minute drive of Hilton Head Island – saunters through its brick public squares and along its boutique-filled main drag, Broughton Street, are musts. Charleston – closest to Folly Beach – is a cobblestone street wonderland, with a waterfront park overlooking Charleston Harbor and Fort Sumter making for a city-meets-tranquil reprieve. Beaufort – located between Hilton Head and Edisto – is on Port Royal Island and has a historic district worthy of a day trip. Its museum selections span the quirky (check out  the Kazoobie Kazoo Factory ) to the reflective – the Beaufort History Museum showcases more than 500 years of history with exhibits on plantation culture, the Spanish American War and more.

Step 4: Choose the best places to eat in South Carolina’s Sea Islands

In Hilton Head, the blue crab reigns supreme – crack some at Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks , with vistas of Port Royal Sound and periodic live music. Otherwise, fresh seafood is the way to go along the coast with shrimp and grits, a lowcountry boil and seafood salad being menu norms.

The island towns are also home to some memorable mom-and-pop grocery stores with curated, South Carolina-bred items. Bert’s Market on Folly Beach has it all; stop by for pimento cheese, boiled peanuts and a visit to the deli counter. Palmetto Dunes General Store on Hilton Head Island is a haven for fresh fried chicken and soft-serve ice cream, among other grocery staples.

Step 5: Getting there

Two international airports generally serve as home bases for journeys to these parts. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport is within a 45-minute drive of Hilton Head and more remote adventures in Daufuskie Island. Charleston International Airport is within 30 minutes of Folly Beach and approximately 2 hours north of Hilton Head. Hilton Head Island Airport also offers select domestic flights.

For train travel, Amtrak has a major station in Charleston, with a smaller operation in Yemassee, South Carolina – a taxi ride from the train station to the islands is the seamless option from there.

Step 6: What to pack

Check ahead of time to see what your hotel and/or vacation rental supplies in terms of beach items – they can vary drastically. Depending on what is provided and how much you’d like to pack, it may be wise to bring a cooler, snorkeling gear, goggles, water sports gear and water floats with you. Otherwise, during the summer months, count on using sunscreen, sunglasses, sun protective clothing, sandals and – in swampy areas – insect repellant, daily. Fortunately in the home bases we’ve outlined in (Step 1), souvenir shops sell all of the aforementioned, but count on paying a premium.

Are you planning a trip to South Carolina? Well, your trip won't be complete without visiting some of the best islands in the state. These South Carolina islands are known for their stunning beaches, where you can swim, relax, and enjoy water sports with your family. Imagine feeling the breeze in your hair as your toes sink into the sand or sipping on a refreshing margarita while watching the waves. If this sounds like paradise, South Carolina is the place to be.

On top of the natural beauty, these islands also include fun outdoor activities like tennis, biking, golf, and hiking. The best thing is that these islands offer historic downtown areas, fancy resorts, luxurious amenities, and a vibrant nightlife, making a trip to the coast of South Carolina even more appealing.

Here's a list of the 14 islands off the coast of South Carolina. No matter which island you choose, South Carolina will offer plenty of fantastic beaches, recreational activities, and that wonderful Southern charm.

Saint Helena Island

Saint Helena Island, one of the islands in the Beaufort Sea, is just a short distance from Beaufort City. It's home to a diverse population with over 8,500 residents, a large percentage of the African-American Gullah people.

This island is renowned for its rustic, old-fashioned Low Country lifestyle with numerous farms and fishing camps. Yet, there are also enjoyable things to do, like visiting an equestrian center, exploring the Fort Fremont Preserve and History Center, going on fishing excursions, and exploring Downtown Frogmore.

Edisto Island

Nestled in the unspoiled ACE Basin,  Edisto Island  is a small coastal island located 42 miles south of historic Charleston. You can get there by taking a beautiful 14-mile drive down the Edisto Island National Scenic Byway, lined with ancient live oaks covered with Spanish moss. Edisto Island is home to a small, tight-knit community of just over 700 residents. The island's lush maritime forests and tidal creeks create a picturesque backdrop for outdoor activities like kayaking, birdwatching, and fishing. 

The Edisto Island Serpentarium offers a fascinating peek into the local reptiles and amphibians. You can also explore the island's wildlife at the Botany Bay Heritage Preserve, which features historic plantation ruins, pristine beaches, and salt marshes. Driftwood Beach, known for its unique fallen trees, is another spot to enjoy the island's natural beauty.

Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island  is a popular tourist destination in South Carolina, attracting over two million tourists each year. With beautiful white-sand beaches, gorgeous tidal creeks, meandering trails, and majestic live oak trees, it's a popular barrier island in Beaufort County. The island boasts 12 miles of scenic coastline with beautiful beaches like Coligny Beach Park, Burkes Beach, and South Beach. But it's not just about the beach – Hilton Head Island offers numerous attractions, including art galleries, restaurants, tennis courts, golf courses, and local events. 

This island's popularity is due to its diverse selection of activities. You can go whale watching, bike or hike trails, kayak in crystal-clear waters, or play golf on world-class courses. Other top attractions on the island are the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, Coastal Discovery Museum, and the picturesque Harbor Town Lighthouse.

Hunting Island

Hunting Island  is a 5,000-acre barrier island located between Fripp Island and Harbor Island. The ACE Basin Estuarine Reserve manages it, and it is located between the Atlantic Ocean and Harbor River. Hunting Island was designated as a state park in 1935 and has since become one of South Carolina's most popular state parks. The island also has a lovely beach, walking trails, and playgrounds for kids. 

One of the island's iconic features is the historic lighthouse, which dates back to the 1800s. If you'd like to stay on the island, camping in the state park is the best option.

Lady's Island 

Lady's Island , located just north of Beaufort, South Carolina, is a charming community with a rich history. Once filled with indigo plantations, it has transformed into an expanding beach community, making it an ideal weekend retreat or day trip destination. Some parts of the island are formally incorporated into the city of Beaufort, but most are not. 

The island is situated just north of Port Royal, and you can reach it through the McTeer Bridge. While Lady's Island is mostly residential, there are a few famous locations to visit, including the Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club, Whitehall Park, and the Secession Golf Club. The island also has miles of beautiful coastline and boat ramps, making it a great spot to spend a day on the water.

Folly Island

Folly Island, located just south of Charleston, is an excellent family-friendly destination. It's recognized as one of the best surf spots on the East Coast, and it's ideal for watersports like paddleboarding, kayaking, boating, and fishing. You can take budget-friendly boat tours along Folly Beach to get a closer look at the island's natural beach. Great tourist sites surround Folly Island, such as the Morris Island Lighthouse and the Edwin Taylor Fishing Pier. 

Folly Beach County Park is a must-visit with its picnic areas, beach access, beach amenities, and bike rentals. Besides its magnificent beach, Folly Island's main street is studded with stores, bars, and delightful local eateries such as Sand Dollar Social Club, Taco Boy, and Snapper Jacks. 

Isle of Palms

If you're looking for a high-end vacation destination, look no further than  Isle of Palms , SC. Isle of Palms is a charming little barrier island between the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, located 12 miles from Charleston. This island is a haven of marshes and sandy beaches. Front Beach is a popular place on the island for family activities such as swimming, sandcastle building, and sunbathing. 

The hamlet of Isle of Palms, located along the beach, is home to exquisite houses, premium resorts, and wonderful dining spots. When summer arrives, the beach buzzes with volleyball games and turtles. Head to Isle of Palms County Park for some beach fun, picnicking, and a playground. The island holds festivals and events throughout the year, including winter holiday street celebrations, July 4th fireworks, and music festivals.

Harbor Island

Harbor Island, a beautiful Carolina Sea Island, is connected to Hunting Island by Johnson Creek. The Sea Island Parkway allows you to travel between these islands. In addition, the Harbor River Drawbridge connects Harbor Island to St. Helena Island. While most of the island is covered with marshlands, a small section features a 2.1-mile pristine beach, gorgeous landscapes, and luxurious amenities. 

Harbor Island is the gateway to the Beaufort Barrier Islands Important Bird Area (IBA). Throughout the year, you can see over 200 different bird species. For more fun, head to the Harbor Island Beach and Racquet Club. The club features a fitness facility, a playground, swimming pools, and several courts for sports, including basketball, pickleball, tennis, and volleyball.

Spring Island

Spring Island , a 3,000-acre Sea Island in South Carolina, is located directly east of Callawassie Island. Spring Island, like its sister, is a private residential community. The island is graced with beautiful waterfront homes and magnificent live oak trees. It also has two natural preserves. 

When exploring this incredible area, you will discover superb eating options, breathtaking coastal views, around 300 hiking paths, deep-water docks, multiple golf courses, clubhouses, pristine playgrounds, a sports complex, an equestrian center, and a wide variety of plant species to admire. It's a true natural wonder. There are no hotels in the area, so renting a vacation rental is the only way to explore this Low Country gem.

Seabrook Island

Location:  Seabrook Island Road, Seabrook Island, SC 29455.

Seabrook Island , formerly known as Simmons Island, is a secluded and gated coastline community that offers a serene environment with the amenities and exciting events of a top-notch resort. This gated barrier island is known for its beautiful beaches, tranquil marshes, and lush forests. Seabrook Island is well-known among birdwatchers and has been designated as an Audubon International Certified Sustainable Community. 

Visitors and residents can enjoy a range of attractions, including a tournament-level Racquet Club, two championship golf courses, a fitness center, an Equestrian Center, an aquatics center, oceanfront pools, and exceptional dining options. Beyond the gates, there's a charming shopping village and a deep-water marina. You can start your day with a tee time and then relax on the sandy beach, enjoying the sun and the warmth until sunset. It's a dreamy escape.

Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island , located 25 miles southwest of Charleston, is a popular vacation spot for travelers, families, and couples. It is primarily a premium beach and a luxurious golf resort with endless amenities. Visit the Marsh Island Lookout Tower in Marsh Island Park for spectacular river views, marshes, and magnificent sunsets. Families can unwind and enjoy the sun at Kiawah Beachwalker Pier. 

To learn more about the island's wildlife, visit The Heron Park Nature Center, which offers guided tours and observation walks. Beachwalker Park offers a boardwalk for admiring local plant life. If you want to visit the island's private area, book a luxury golf holiday to enjoy world-class golf courses and luxurious lodgings.

Goat Island

The island got its name from an earlier resident herd of goats. The Holloway family moved to Goat Island in the 1930s to escape the city's hustle and bustle. They lived on the island for many years without proper shelter, surviving on its resources. Today, there are still a few inhabitants on Goat Island, but their homes are contemporary and well-equipped. However, the island has retained its secluded and serene atmosphere, making it an ideal location for those who love fishing and boating. 

One of the most popular tourist activities is observing the goats from the Drunken Jack's or Marsh Walk. You may also encounter ducks, pelicans, and peacocks roaming the island. If you crave a taste of the “real world,” a short boat journey will take you to the shops and restaurants on the Isle of Palms and Wild Dunes. 

Capers Island 

Capers Island is located about 15 miles north of Charleston along the Atlantic Ocean. This natural haven is located between Bulls Island and Dewees Island, and it's separated by the Intracoastal Waterway. This remote island is only accessible by boat; there is no road access. One of the island's attractions is the beautiful Boneyard Beach, known for its sun-bleached old tree stump. The island is part of a 60-mile stretch of protected land, including the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge, the Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center, and the Santee Coastal Reserve. 

During your visit to this island, you'll have fantastic opportunities to observe wildlife like raccoons, loggerhead turtles, deer, and various bird species.

Daufuskie Island

Daufuskie Island  is South Carolina's southernmost populated Sea Island. It is located between Hilton Head and Savannah Island. This historic island can only be reached by ferry or boat. The island has few paved roads, and most residents belong to the Gullah community. There are historical landmarks and wildlife areas to visit on the island. Camping, kayaking, hiking, biking, and swimming are popular activities. You may also see sea turtles, numerous bird species, alligators, and whales offshore. Strolling on the island's shaded gravel pathways beneath ancient oak trees gives a peaceful, nostalgic feeling. 

If you want more amenities and civilization, go to the Haig Point Club, a private residential club on the island's north side. If you're near Savannah or Hilton Head, consider a weekend getaway or a day trip to Daufuskie Island.

Hilton Head Island

With more than 23 championship golf courses in the area, this destination is a golf lover's dream, but it's perfect for families, too, with dolphin tours, water sports, and 12 miles of beaches. Opt to stay at one of the many beachfront hotels, like the Omni Hilton Head Oceanfront Resort , or book a stay at a beloved boutique property, like The Inn & Club at Harbour Town. I grew up visiting Hilton Head Island on multigenerational summer vacations with my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, and a gaggle of cousins, so we typically stayed at a vacation rental where we could spread out and cook some of our own meals. You can find condo and home rentals on platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, and the Sea Pines Resort website .

Kiawah Island

If you're seeking a relaxing beach getaway, look no further than Kiawah Island. Even though it's only 25 miles from nearby Charleston, Kiawah feels totally isolated and secluded. With five stunning golf courses created by the best professional players and designers, Kiawah Island has everything an avid golfer could want. Book a stay at The Sanctuary , a luxurious, 255-room beachfront hotel with a spa, beautiful pools, and a variety of dining venues, including the acclaimed Ocean Room. I've had the pleasure of staying at The Sanctuary a couple of times; I love the hotel's serene pools and complimentary beach services. And even as a non-golfer, I enjoyed grabbing a cocktail and some crispy shrimp from The Ryder Cup Bar overlooking the Ocean Course.

Myrtle Beach

As the unofficial capital of the Grand Strand — the more than 60-mile stretch on South Carolina's coast from Little River to Winyah Bay — Myrtle Beach is ideal for families looking for a beach destination with plenty of activities on and off the shore. Like many other South Carolina beaches, Myrtle Beach offers sandy shores and world-class golfing, but it also has attractions the whole family will love, like the SkyWheel Ferris wheel, the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk and Promenade, and more. Marriott's OceanWatch Villas at Grande Dunes is one of many oceanfront hotel options in the area.

Folly Beach

Folly Beach offers laid-back vibes just minutes from downtown Charleston, making it an ideal destination for visitors who want to explore the Lowcountry during their beach vacation. The beach is the main attraction here — spend time lounging in the sun or learn how to surf with lessons from one of the many surf schools. Tides Folly Beach offers oceanfront hotel rooms, and there are a number of small inns and house rentals available, too.

Huntington Beach State Park

Located between Myrtle Beach and Georgetown, Huntington Beach State Park offers historic sites, fishing, bird-watching, hiking, and, of course, a three-mile beach. There are more than 300 bird species at the park, and visitors are also known to spot pelicans, alligators, sea turtles, and more. Atalaya Castle, now a National Historic Landmark, was built here in the 1930s as a winter home for Archer and Anna Huntington. Plus, camping is available at Huntington Beach State Park for those who want to spend more time enjoying its natural beauty.

Isle of Palms

Isle of Palms is one of the Charleston area's best beaches, sandwiched between the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. Enjoy tennis, surfing, paddleboarding, and golf, or charter a boat to explore this location from the water for a fresh perspective. Whether you opt to stay at the Wild Dunes Resort or rent an oceanfront home, there's plenty of opportunity to soak up the sun on the soft, sandy beach. Isle of Palms County Park has lifeguards, outdoor showers, restrooms, a playground, chair and umbrella rentals, and beach-accessible wheelchairs. The Windjammer is a popular beachfront bar with concerts and shows throughout the year. When I was living in Mount Pleasant, we'd often take the 20-minute drive to Isle of Palms on the weekend, but you have to get there early if you plan to visit during peak times as parking spots fill up quickly.

Surfside Beach

Nicknamed "The Family Beach," Surfside Beach is located on the Grand Strand south of Myrtle Beach. Surfside's commitment to families goes beyond its nickname — it has also been an autism-friendly travel destination since January 2016. Visitors can enjoy the sandy shores from 36 different points (some of which provide wheelchair access), and there's also mini golf and plenty of restaurants to choose from. There are only a few hotels on Surfside Beach, including the Surfside Beach Oceanfront Hotel , but you can also opt for a home rental, so you and your crew have room to spread out.

Daufuskie Island

If you've ever wanted to just get away from it all, Daufuskie Island, located between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Georgia , is a solid choice. This isolated island is only accessible by boat, which means you're sure to get the peace and quiet you're looking for when you visit. Say goodbye to crowded beaches and hello to quiet time with family with a top-ranked golf course and equestrian center located at Haig Point . Haig Point is also home to some of the only accommodations and restaurants on this island, though there are other rentals available on Daufuskie, too.

Edisto Island

Edisto Island , one of South Carolina's Sea Islands, is home to almost five miles of peaceful beach. Wildlife is abundant on the island, with visitors often spotting turtles, dolphins, egrets, pelicans, and more. Relax on the beach, go for a sunset cruise, book a fishing charter, or play a round of golf. You can choose from a variety of home and condo rentals, or opt to camp out at Edisto Beach State Park .

Sullivan's Island

For small-town charm, head to Sullivan's Island , the two-and-a-half-mile-long barrier island near the entrance of the Charleston Harbor — and one of my very favorite beaches in South Carolina. With no commercial development, this is one of the cleanest beachfronts you'll find in the area. When you're not enjoying sunset walks down the well-kept beach, try sailing, kayaking, or kiteboarding on the island's waters. Sullivan's Island stands out with its outsized dining scene; I love grabbing burgers at Poe's Tavern , barbecue nachos at Home Team BBQ , and to-go frosé from The Co-Op . There are plenty of great hotels in Charleston only 20 minutes away, or consider one of the beautiful beach rentals on the island.

Pawleys Island

Pawleys Island is home to three miles of pristine coastline and plenty to do and see. Have fun collecting shells on the shore or surfing the waves in the Atlantic. Or, try fishing or crabbing in the nearby scenic tidal creek. Grab a bite at Bistro 217, Chive Blossom, or Perrone's after a day on one of the courses along the Hammock Coast Golf Trail. There are several vacation homes with ocean views for rent, plus two historic inns: Sea View Inn and The Pelican Inn .

Murrells Inlet

With a backstory involving the infamous pirate Blackbeard, this popular fishing village near Myrtle Beach is a great getaway with heaps of charm and history. Fishing is one of the biggest draws, and there are several boat rental options and deep-sea excursions available. You won't want to miss the MarshWalk , which offers waterfront dining, live entertainment, and special events. And when you want to experience even more natural beauty, walk the Lowcountry Trail through Brookgreen Gardens . Choose from Murrells Inlet hotels or head to Myrtle Beach, less than 30 minutes away, for more lodging options.

Fripp Island

Head to this small wildlife sanctuary for kayaking, golfing, and gorgeous views. Watch for some of the 175 bird species that live along the ocean and salt marsh, or other local animals like gators, dolphins, and turtles. You'll want to have your phone in hand for the island's ample photo opportunities made famous in films like "Forrest Gump," "The Jungle Book," and "The Prince of Tides."

Morris Island

What was once the location of a Civil War-era fort is now an uninhabited island in the Charleston Harbor marked by the state's tallest lighthouse. Today, this island is only accessible by boat; when I was growing up in the Charleston area, we would take our boat out and spend a weekend afternoon looking for shells and shark teeth along the beach. While boat rentals are available, I recommend visitors book one of the tours that will take you to the island with a local expert who can tell you all about the area's history and marine life.

Seabrook Island

Located between Edisto and Kiawah, Seabrook is another South Carolina barrier island home to a private beach community. Visitors can book one of the island's many home rentals and enjoy amenities at the Seabrook Island Club like the golf courses, beach club, equestrian center, racquet club, and more. There are two beaches at this resort community: North Beach, one of the only sandy stretches in South Carolina where you can go horseback riding, and Pelican Beach, which offers beautiful sunset views.

6 South Carolina Islands to Visit in 2023

South Carolina islands have gathered humans for centuries; from the indigenous peoples of the ancient Americas; to the earliest, wealthy European settlers; to the slave and plantation sea cotton traders; to the golf course magnates of recent past. Beaches, history, fishing, golf, and the appreciation of nature draws visitors to these islands from all over the world.

There are six significant islands on coastal SC: Isle of Palms/Sullivan’s Island, Folly Island, Kiawah Island, Edisto island, Hunting Island, and Hilton Head Island South Carolina. There are other islands in-between, but we’ve chosen these as the most likely travel destinations.

When you visit the Low Country region, you’re going to end up on a South Carolina island. These are the 6 best ones with which to familiarize yourself.

1. Folly Island / James Island

Folly Island is about 15 minutes from downtown Charleston, and is considered by many to be the best island in South Carolina. The gathering point on the island is the town of Folly Beach, a California-style beach town lined with restaurants and surf shops. If a day of sunbathing and boogie boarding fits your agenda, or perhaps a simple afternoon inspecting the swimsuits of fellow beachgoers, the summery vibe of Folly Island makes this your kind of place. 

Once upon a time the Union Army used Folly Island to prepare an attack on Confederates in Charleston, but these days you’re more likely to see a tatted-up surfer than anything resembling a soldier. Why you’re visiting: Active beach town. Close to Charleston. Surfing. Co-eds.

Why you would go somewhere else: Crowds. Parking.

2. Edisto Island — South Carolina Islands

As with many other South Carolina islands, Edisto Island belonged to indigenous peoples centuries before the plantation owners grew indigo, rice, and cotton on its fertile shores. The primary draws to this island are Edisto Beach, the Wyndham Ocean Ridge resort, and Edisto Island State Park. The park has a playground, an education center, and beachfront campsites.

And then there’s Driftwood Beach, one of the absolute best things to do in the Charleston area. Located at Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve, Driftwood Beach is an ancient seaside forest lost to erosion. What is left is the work of Medusa, a village of dead, upright trees in a vast, lonesome landscape of shell-covered shores. Of all sights on all the islands, Driftwood Beach on Edisto Island South Carolina is the most memorable sight you’ll see.

Why you would go somewhere else: Out of the way location (one hour drive from Charleston).

3. Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island in South Carolina showcases 12-miles of immaculate beaches and twenty-three championship golf courses. Self-dubbed, “America’s Favorite Island”, HHI sees visitors from all over the world – it is a true destination island with a salubrious southern climate.

As a resort island that caters to the affluent, Hilton Head Island South Carolina boasts numerous high-end resorts, spas, pro-shops, bars and restaurants. For the rest of us, Hilton Head shares its history of Native American life, sea cotton plantations, Civil War lore, and natural wonder.

Why you’re visiting: Golf. Clean, family vacation. A few points of interest.

Why you would go somewhere else: Homogenous appearance. Could be boring for non-golfers.

4. Hunting Island — South Carolina Islands

Located off the coast of Beaufort, Hunting Island is not only the most popular State Park in the state of South Carolina, but one of the last undeveloped South Carolina Islands. Don’t arrive here looking for a crab shack serving umbrella drinks by a pier in the marsh.

There are two incredible things that make Hunting Island one of the best islands to visit. 1. A 136′ lighthouse. Although no longer used as a functioning  lighthouse , the tower is open to visitors. A Climb to the top costs $2 and gives tremendous perspective of the surrounding areas. 2. A spectacular driftwood beach. While not as dramatic as the one on Edisto island, Hunting Island’s dead beach forest is equally vast and even more remote. When you arrive at the beach turn right and walk past any and all signs. You’ll find it over a mile down the way. You can’t miss it.

Why you’re visiting: Uncrowded. Driftwood beach. Awesome lighthouse. Close to Beaufort.

Why you would go somewhere else: Out of the way location. Few amenities or attractions.

5. Isle of Palms / Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan’s Island South Carolina has a locals-only feel in the best possible way: Lowkey crowd, a little bit of shopping, a couple of restaurants, and a whole lotta sand. This is a wealthy corner of the city where the houses are extra large and the beach feels almost private, (but it’s not — it’s for all of us to enjoy). On the south end of the island is Fort Moultri e of Civil War fame.

Isle of Palms is the other famous beach community in Charleston (along with Folly Island). While it isn’t all that different than Sullivan’s Island — a small inlet is all that separates them  (map) — It’s a little closer to civilization and feels more commercial. Some consider this the best island in South Carolina.

Why you’re visiting: Close to Charleston. Clean, wide beach in a nice community. Fort Moultrie.

Why you would go somewhere else: Not really a good reason. Folly Beach is more interesting?

6. Kiawah Island

Kiawah is as close to a golf mecca as the greater Charleston area has to offer. The South Carolina island is home to five championship courses, most notably The Ocean Course designed by Pete and Alice Dye. Unbeknownst to me, the Dye’s are considered the “first family of golf course architecture.”

So if you don’t golf, why do you care about Kiawah Island? I’ll give you three reasons: 1. The river dolphins — yes, river dolphins — perform a fishing technique called Strand Feeding, in which they circle the fish and force them onto the beach, then beach themselves and feast (photo below). 2. A legion of pelicans (photo above) collect on the south-eastern most point of the island. 3. There is an amazing restaurant at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort called The Ocean Room .

Why you’re visiting: Golf. Quiet, family getaway. River Dolphins.

Why you would go somewhere else: You don’t golf. An hour drive from Charleston.

An Honest Conclusion for South Carolina Islands

South Carolina Islands are a treasure in the American south. From soft-sanded beaches to plantation relics, to tournament golf courses, to salt marsh estuaries, the countless touches of this region can transform a vacation into something that lives in your memory forever.

Even if you only visit one of the islands: Edisto, Kiawah, Folly, Hunting, Sullivan, or Hilton Head, you’ve partaken in a tradition that goes back thousands of years. We hope you enjoy your time in the low country islands as much as we did.

Though it’s a bit more popular than the other islands, it maintains a laid-back, funky vibe. Plus, there are plenty of options for places to stay with kids! Morris Island

Morris Island is an undeveloped island located in Charleston Harbor. Accessible by boat, it was an important location during the Civil War. Here, the Union Army tried to seize Charleston and the Confederate Army held them off as long as possible. Now, the island is a great place for families on a day trip from Charleston. South Carolina is known for its southern hospitality, rich history, unique food, and slower-paced lifestyle. You may have heard of this area referred to as “Low County,” which is a nod to the typography as most of the state sits below sea level. What you may not know about South Carolina is that just off the coast lies a long chain of 34 barrier and tidal islands. The Sea Islands are a chain of tidal and barrier islands on the Atlantic Ocean along the South Carolina, Georgia and Florida coastline. 

There are over 100 islands, meaning about one-third belong to South Carolina. These islands have a sorted history of producing Sea Island cotton through the use of slaves. But, following President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, more than 5,000 slaves on the islands gained freedom. 

Since then, the islands have grown to develop their own personalities. Some have five-star resorts, luxe amenities, historic downtown villages, and vibrant nightlife options, while others require transportation by boat and are only inhabited by more animals than people.  These are the top 20 islands off the coast of South Carolina. It’s time to slow down and experience life low-country style.

Kiawah Island is a top vacation destination for those in and around the Charleston area 25 miles (40 km) southwest of Charleston, so it’s an easy day trip.

This barrier island is in Beaufort County, South Carolina.

It takes about 40 minutes to get to Hilton Head Island from the busy, fun-loving city of Savannah, Ga.

This island offers 12 miles (19 km) of coastline with white-sandy beaches such as South Beach, Coligny Beach Park and Burkes Beach.

Besides the beach, Hilton Head Island has restaurants, golf courses, tennis courts, art galleries and local events.

The abundance of activities is what makes this such a popular island.

It is a great place to experience all that South Carolina has to offer.

Folly Island is one of the most popular surf spots on the East Coast and is also an excellent spot for other watersports such as kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, and fishing at the Folly Beach Pier.

Besides beaches, Folly Island’s main street has shops, bars and local restaurants such as Taco Boy, Sand Dollar Social Club, and Snapper Jacks.

If you want a secluded nature lovers’ dream just outside Charleston’s bustling city, look no further than Bear Island.

This undeveloped island is like travelling to another period and was once a rice plantation, but it is now ​​part of the ACE Basin estuarine reserve area and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

Bear Island provides some of the most natural and exciting biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, and bird watching.

Avid bird watchers can expect to find waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds and songbirds.

Dafuskie Island is the southernmost inhabited South Carolina Sea Island, between Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

This old-world island is accessible only by boat or ferry.

The island has very few paved roads and is home to a Gullah community, who makes up most of the 400-person population.

While this island offers some interesting historic monuments and wildlife areas, you can opt for a little more civilization and amenities at the Haig Point Club, a private residential club that takes up most of the island’s north side.

When it comes to activities, you can kayak, parasail, or browse through the business district filled with shops and delicious, award-winning restaurants.

Saint Helena Island is part of the Beaufort Sea Islands, just a few miles away from the city of Beaufort.

The island has a diverse population, including many African American Gullah people.

The island of Saint Helena is known for its rural and traditional Low Country life.

But, it also has a rich history – it’s for being the place of Napoleon Bonaparte’s exile and death and where Martin Luther King, Jr drafted his famous “I Have a Dream” speech.

Saint Helena is a slower-paced lifestyle filled with plenty of farms and fishing camps but also offers some fun things such as Downtown Frogmore, an equestrian centre, fishing charters, and Fort Fremont Preserve and History Center.

This small barrier island is about 21 miles (33 km) off the coast of Beaufort.

Fripp Island is a common vacation destination with many year-round residents, giving it a great community feel.

Because the island is so tiny, many people get around using a golf cart.

The most popular resort on the island is the Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort, which has many amenities, including plenty of sandy beaches, tennis courts, golf courses and a water park with a kid’s pool, alligator slides and a frog fountain.

South Carolina’s largest island is also one of the largest islands in the United States, just a few behind Manhattan.

The most famous attraction on John’s Island is the ancient Angel Oak, a live oak tree around 500 years old!

When it comes to staying on John’s Island, you will not find many hotels or resorts.

Your best option is to stay in an Airbnb or home rental.

Seabrook Island, formerly known as Simmons Island, is a private and gated oceanfront community that provides the natural beauty of being on a secluded preserve along with the amenities and exciting events you would find at a world-class resort.

Residents and guests can explore two championship golf courses, a tournament-grade Racquet Club, an Equestrian Center, a fitness and aquatics centre, oceanfront pools, a marina, a shopping village and great dining options.

The island is nestled snuggly between Kiawah Island, Wadmalaw Island, and Edisto Island along the Atlantic Ocean and Wadmalaw River.

Seabrook Island is at Seabrook Island Road, Seabrook Island, SC 29455.

Port Royal Island is located in Beaufort County and is the most populated island in the county.

Many residents are employed at the Naval Hospital Beaufort and the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort.

The island can be accessed by the McTeer Bridge or the Beaufort Memorial Bridge from Lady’s Island or via Shell Point.

While they are many year-round residents on the island, visitors come from all over to enjoy beautiful beaches, scenic walking trails, boat tours, and tons of opportunities for birdwatching.

Port Royal is also an excellent spot for fresh local seafood at places such as Fishcamp on 11th Street and Madison’s.

Callawassie Island is a private, gated island like a few others on our list.

The island is about 10 miles (16 km) inland from the Atlantic Ocean, surrounded by tidal creeks and salt marshes, which residents diligently preserve.

Although a highway runs to the island, the most popular way to get here is by boat.

Residents and guests can enjoy lagoons, a butterfly garden, parks, rookeries, and a 27-hole golf course.

Callawassie Island is at Callawassie Dr, Okatie, SC 29909.

If you have a bird watcher in the family, Deveaux Bank is the place for your next vacation!

This island is a 215-acre (87 ha) bird sanctuary located just off the coast from Edisto Island and Seabrook Island, making it a great day trip if you are staying at either of the neighbouring islands.

Bird spottings have included the stunning eastern brown pelicans and black skimmers, but there are thousands of other species to see.

Fun Fact: the island’s shape constantly changes with the currents and tides.

Deveaux Bank is at Deveaux Bank, South Carolina, 29455

This tiny slice of heaven is an undeveloped South Carolina barrier island about 15 miles (24 km) from Charleston, accessible by boat only.

Capers Island is owned by the federal government and protected from any future development, which allows the wildlife and natural beach, salt marshes, maritime uplands, and wetlands to flourish.

Capers Island is famous for a beach called the “bone-yard,” which earned the nickname because of the old tree stumps and skeletons that have been bleached by the sun.

Because of the dedication to preservation, visitors also come to view the loggerhead turtles, deer, and many species of birds that reside here.

Goat Island is a small island between Mt Pleasant and the Isle of Palms.

It’s so tiny that it’s no bigger than a street in the average neighbourhood.

The island is also only accessible by boat.

It got its name because of a local who frequently set his goats free to roam the island to control vegetation.

Watching goats from the Marsh Walk or Drunken Jack’s is one of the most popular tourist pastimes.

You can also frequently see peacocks, ducks, and pelicans roaming around occasionally.

Hunting Island is a secluded barrier island between Harbor Island and Fripp Island, the ACE Basin Estuarine Reserve manages that.

The island is sandwiched between the Harbor River and the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1935, this island was declared a state park and continues to be the most popular state park in South Carolina.

The main attractions of this island are the beautiful beach, camping sites, and historic lighthouse.

Hunting Island is at Sea Island Pkwy, St Helena Island, SC 29920.

Harbor Island is one of the many Carolina Sea Islands. It is just north of Hunting Island, separated by Johnson Creek.

Civil War history buffs can tour Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, savvy Instagrammers can take advantage of photo ops along The Battery and Rainbow Row, and sun seekers can flock to Folly Beach and other nearby stretches of sand. Plus, everyone will enjoy sampling Charleston's world-class Southern cuisine, including staples like shrimp and grits, roasted oysters and she-crab soup.

Located about 100 miles southwest of Charleston, Hilton Head Island caters to travelers seeking a slow-paced vacation. Much less developed than other beach options like Myrtle Beach and North Carolina's Outer Banks, Hilton Head Island boasts 12-plus miles of pristine shoreline. Coligny Beach Park offers a wealth of facilities, such as adjacent shops and restaurants, but those looking for less-crowded sands should seek out the beach access point at Alder Lane. What's more, Hilton Head has earned the nickname "Golf Island" for its dozens of championship courses.

With 10 miles of undisturbed beaches, renowned golf courses and top-notch resorts , Kiawah Island has all the essentials for a serene (albeit costly) beach vacation. Kiawah Island (located about 30 miles southwest of Charleston) features smooth beaches that are great for biking, lounging and spotting bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles. Meanwhile, novice golfers can attend clinics at a learning center, while pros can take on the challenging Ocean Course (notorious for its wind). Come mealtime, visitors can find everything from ice cream parlors to upscale dining at the island's resorts or the picture-perfect Freshfields Village.

Beaufort's quaint oak tree-lined streets and Civil War-era homes provide a glimpse into the small town's antebellum days. Sign up for a walking or horse-drawn carriage tour to take in your surroundings, then visit the Beaufort History Museum to learn more about the town's past. You'll also want to check out Penn Center on the nearby St. Helena Island to educate yourself about Gullah culture. Once you've gotten your fill of history, head to the Beaufort River to kayak or paddleboard, or make your way to the Port Royal Cypress Wetlands and Rookery for a couple of hours of bird-watching.

Although Greenville doesn’t receive throngs of visitors like other South Carolina destinations, it's one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, meaning it may not remain a hidden gem for much longer. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville has earned a reputation as a hub for outdoor activities. Head to Falls Park on the Reedy to walk across its impressive Liberty Bridge or bike the 28-mile Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. In town, catch a show at the Peace Center, stroll down Main Street or mingle with friendly locals at a brewery.

This small town between Charleston and Myrtle Beach packs in a lot of history. Get the lay of the land with a tram tour in the historic district, where you'll find attractions that tell disparate stories of life before the Civil War, from Georgian mansions like the Kaminski House Museum to The Rice Museum, which details Georgetown's impactful rice plantation economy. A boat tour can also take you past plantations like Hopsewee Plantation and Hobcaw Barony, which call attention to Native American and Gullah culture and the slave experience. Back in town, the Harborwalk is worth a stroll for its restaurants, shops and art galleries. 

Myrtle Beach, one of the most iconic East Coast beach destinations , is especially popular with families thanks to its wealth of kid-friendly attractions (think: miniature golf courses and Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach). But visitors of all ages will enjoy spending time by the water. Myrtle Beach's 60-mile stretch of coastline is ideal for relaxing, and the gentle water makes it an excellent place to swim, fish, paddleboard and kayak. To get a dose of nature without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists, travelers can head to Myrtle Beach State Park, which offers equestrian trails, playgrounds, a campground and a fishing pier.

Situated less than 17 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park offers an escape from the busyness of South Carolina's better-known beaches. You can swim, fish and go boating at its 3-mile-long undeveloped beach. Additionally, more than 300 bird species call this park home; walk along Huntington Beach's two nature trails to access some of its best places for bird-watching (you may also spot some alligators). Don't forget to save time for a guided tour of Moorish-style Atalaya Castle and a visit to Brookgreen Gardens to marvel at its flowers and sculptures.

Central South Carolina's Congaree National Park is home to North America's largest stretch of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, making it an excellent place to go hiking. Congaree boasts more than 27 miles of trails and boardwalks suitable for all skill levels, including the shorter Boardwalk Loop Trail and longer paths like the Weston Lake Trail and the Oakridge Trail that are havens for birds, wild turkeys and deer. When you're not exploring its beautiful forest, spend a few hours fishing in Congaree National Park's lakes or canoeing or kayaking down Cedar Creek.

Caesars Head State Park stuns visitors with an easily accessible overlook that grants sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment's 2,000-foot drop. This outcropping is just the starting point for exploring the park, which sits roughly 30 miles northwest of Greenville on the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Sixty-plus miles of trails lead to sights like the Devil's Kitchen, where hikers can clamber between narrow walls of a mountain that's been split in two, and Raven Cliff Falls, which rewards those who complete the 2-mile trail with a 420-foot cascade. Fishing and bird-watching (particularly during the fall hawk migration) are also popular things to do.

You don’t have to go to the Caribbean to live the “Island Life”— it’s all right here on the the South Carolina islands. Our string of 34 palmetto-studded sea islands range from untamed and secluded to five-star and bustling.

While we can’t possibly cover all 34 islands in one blog post, we’ve chosen a representative sample of the South Carolina islands we know and love—making our way from north to south along the chain. Read on to determine which of these South Carolina Islands is the best option for you and your fellow vacationers.

Side note:  If you’re staying at one of our  Kiawah Island Getaways properties , most of these islands are within day-trip driving distance—with the exception of Daufuskie Island, which is remote and requires a ferry ride to reach it.

• Surfers. (And kiteboarders and stand-up paddleboarders and…) Folly has a laid-back, colorful and carefree vibe—where the days are long and the ocean offers endless fun. The island’s motto could be “have a good time, and don’t take yourself too seriously.”
• Nightlife. Live music, cold drinks and rooftop bars make Folly Beach a hit with those who like to stay out late and sleep in.
• Sweet tea sipping.  Seriously. If this cold southern treat pleases your palate, you’ll love Wadmalaw, home to both the Charleston Tea Plantation, which offers trolley tours of the process, and the Firefly Distillery, where you can taste (and purchase) a selection of their famous tea-infused vodkas, plus whiskey, moonshine, and other spirits.
• Wine tasting.  Once you finish your spirits-sampling at Firefly, make your way to Deep Water Vineyard, which is located on the same farm, to give their offerings a try.
• Everyone!  We truly feel that Kiawah is a one-size-fits-all-island—from toddlers just finding their sea legs to retirees seeking the good life…even teenagers are known to put down their phones and have fun on Kiawah.
• Kiawah  is often named as one of the best beaches on the East Coast. And no wonder—its wide, welcoming beaches are so flat and hard-packed you can even ride bicycles on them! And because a pass is required to come onto the island (shown at the guard house), the beaches are rarely crowded.
• Golfers.  We’d be remiss not to mention Kiawah’s PGA Tour pedigree (with a repeat PGA coming our way in 2021) and the world-renowned, Jack Nicklaus-designed Ocean Course at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. But, of course, you don’t have to love golf to love Kiawah.
• Honeymooners.  Kiawah sets an idyllic stage for romantic getaways. Think hand-in-hand strolls along an empty beach, a bottle of wine at sunset (and sunrise coffees on your oceanfront balcony!), a couple’s massage, a bicycle ride under the shade of live oaks… we could go on. Hint: Kiawah Island also makes a great spot to “pop the question” to that special someone.
• Families.  With quiet beaches but plenty to do, Edisto maintains just the right amount of beach town charm. Great swimming on Edisto, too!
• Nature enthusiasts.  The island’s wild side will impress your group’s birders, botanists, and hobby marine biologists. Head to the Edisto Island Serpentarium to observe and learn about alligators, turtles, snakes and other reptiles.
• Budget-concious vacationers.  Edisto has its own lovely State Park campground, offering an affordable place to lay your head at night—be it in a tent or an RV. For sites with water and electricity hookups, you’ll pay $21 – $55 a night, depending on location and season. For walk-in, tent-only sites, the rate is $15-$20 per night.
• Bicyclists.  Pedal your way down quiet streets shaded by live oaks, where cars are rare — but golf carts are common.
• History and culture buffs.  Visit the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation to learn about the Gullah culture of the slave-descended residents of Daufuskie, as well as its oyster fishing era (which ended in the 1950s, just before electricity came to the island).
• Day trips.  Hop on the ferry for sleepy Daufuskie, rent a golf cart, grab lunch at Lucy Bell’s Cafe, explore on foot, then catch the ferry back to Hilton Head.

Everything that Charleston touches turns to gold. The Holy City’s popular barrier islands of Kiawah Island, Folly Beach , Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms have certainly proven that. Though much larger than its southern neighbors of Kiawah Island and Seabrook Island, Johns Island often seems a bit hidden in plain sight. The fact that one-third of Johns Islands’ 84 square miles is actually part of the Charleston city limits seems to further disguise its identity as a destination of its own. Just a short drive from Charleston’s bustling peninsula, Johns Island offers a quieter retreat that’s still an easy shot from all the action. Its picturesque coastal marshland landscapes, waterfront views along the Stono and Kiawah Rivers, and diverse wildlife offer plenty to swoon over. Here’s the best way to spend time on the state’s biggest island of Johns Island.  

What To Do On Johns Island

California may have the General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park, but Johns Island has the Angel Oak, a Lowcountry gem that’s known for being the largest Southern Live Oak tree east of the Mississippi. Located at the Angel Oak Tree Park, which is open seven days a week and also features a gift shop and picnic tables, this is a must-see if you come to the area. At 65 feet high with a circumference of more than 25 feet, the tree is estimated to be between 300 to 400 years old.

Go Hiking At Johns Island County Park

This multipurpose site features 783 acres of protected land that offers something for everyone. There are wooded trails for equestrians, walkers, and runners. There’s a six-target archery range and a 3-D archery course, a dog park for furry friends, and a 9-hole disc golf course. Park admission is just $2 so it’s affordable and rewarding to bring the entire family for a day of fun.

Take A River Cruise

Wildlife is abundant on Johns Island and one of the best ways to see the animals who call the area home is on a safari river cruise with Coastal Expeditions. The outfitter’s 2.5-hour tour takes place on the Kiawah River. Bring your binoculars and look out for deer feeding on the edge of the river or marsh sparrows camouflaged in the high grass. Don’t forget to look down into the water where you may catch a glimpse of dolphins headed to the estuary to hunt. Each tour is led by a naturalist who can answer all your wildlife questions and make sure you don’t miss out on any sightings.

Sip Your Way Through Wadmalaw Island

Johns Island is surrounded by other scenic barrier islands within easy driving distance. Less than 10 miles down the road, smaller Wadmalaw Island is a great place to spend an afternoon. One of their biggest draws is Deep Water Vineyard , a 48-acre vineyard, winery, event space, and community gathering spot. Sample the muscadine wines. On especially hot days, the wine slushies are the way to go. Another can’t miss destination is the Charleston Tea Garden , the country’s only commercial tea farm. On a visit, you can take a trolley ride through the 127-acre garden, tour the factory, and snag some tea blends and bags to take home.  

Explore Nearby Kiawah Island

Head to Southern neighbor Kiawah Island for some Atlantic coast fun and a few once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Beachwalker Park offers the only public beach access on the island, so it’s the perfect place to post up for a laidback beach day. Amenities like chair and umbrella rentals, restrooms, on-duty lifeguards, and a snack bar make it an easy choice. Any travel buddies looking to shop will want to head to Freshfields Village , where more than 30 shops sell everything from resort wear to handmade souvenirs. Golfers in the group will find a bucket list experience awaiting at Kiawah Island Golf Resort , where there are five breathtaking courses, one of which (the Ocean Course) is consistently named in the top 3 of Golf Digest’s Best Courses in America list.

So much so that when its sister restaurant The Obstinate Daughter opened on nearby Sullivan’s Island in 2014, it too became an instant hit. Make reservations at Wild Olive and then spend the customary time fretting over which of their incredible handmade pasta dishes to order. The Bavette with shrimp, spicy hot Fresno chile tomato, basil, and lemon is a seemingly choice until you see the “Sunday Gravy” Lasagna made with venison, elk, ribeye, mushroom, tomato, and fontina.

4. Edisto Island

This is the road to Botany Bay. Yes, it's real and it really looks this dreamy. Edisto Island is very down-to-earth...but be careful...you might not want to leave.

5. St Helena Island

St Helena Island has a great traditional gullah flair. It's a laid back place where you're certain to feel relaxed. Visit the ruins of the Chapel of Ease while you're there.

6. Daufuskie Island

Quiet little Daufuskie Island is mostly residential but there are a couple of resorts where you can hide away for some R&R. Daufuskie is the island immediately south of Hilton Head Island so you won't be too far away from some great restaurants and night life.

One of the best places in South Carolina for bicycling, Hilton Head has miles of flat, well-marked bicycling trails, with great scenery and signage to point out landmarks and interesting facts. Greenville is a highlight of South Carolina and the perfect place if you're looking for a city getaway. This delightful community has a small-town feel but plenty of attractions and things to do to keep you entertained. The tree-lined Main Street downtown has a wonderful atmosphere, with interesting shops and a great selection of restaurants.

A short walk away is the scenic Reedy Falls, one of the key features that makes Greenville such a beautiful city. Stroll the sidewalks on both sides of the river to enjoy outdoor patios and artist studios, and wander down to the base of the falls if you want a close-up look. Walk across the Liberty Bridge at Falls Park on the Reedy , a curving, 345-foot-long pedestrian-only suspension bridge, for the best views.

One of the main attractions in Greenville is the 28-mile Swamp Rabbit Trail , a multi-use trail that runs along the Reedy River from downtown to Travelers Rest. Some of it runs through the city but the vast majority runs through forest along a former rail bed, meaning it's mostly flat. You can rent a bike or e-bike in downtown Greenville. Along the way, you can stop in at restaurants to enjoy some time on a patio. The Swamp Rabbit Cafe and Grocery is a fun stop if you are going out to Travelers Rest.

Greenville also makes a good base to explore nearby natural areas like Table Rock State Park and Caesars Head State Park . Both of these have hiking trails, great mountain vistas, and impressive waterfalls.

It is worth taking a day trip from Hilton Head to Daufuskie Island. Accessible only by boat and passenger ferry , it looks as if time stopped moving here. To explore the island on your own, rent a golf cart. There are only a few paved roads on the island, but the carts can drive down the tree-canopied dirt roads.

Pay a visit to the Iron Fish Gallery & Studio , which is where acclaimed coastal sculptor Chase Allen displays his creations. The sculptures have become collector's items worldwide and can only be purchased on Daufuskie Island.

There is a 3-mile-long beach that is way less crowded than other area beaches. Even in the middle of the tourist season, you will only find a few hundred people along it (as opposed to thousands in Myrtle Beach or Hilton Head).

Here you will find Tour Daufuskie , which rents kayaks and paddle boards and also runs organized tours on both. Trips either take you into the ocean or down the island's rivers and saltwater creeks. Horseback riding along the beach is a popular activity. The Haig Point Equestrian Center runs excursions.

For more cultural enrichment, pay a visit to the Daufuskie Island Museum , which tells the story of Native American tribes from the region. The Rob Kennedy Historical Trail , with more than 20 landmarks, is also worth a stroll.

The attack on Fort Sumter, the federal fort guarding Charleston Harbor, by Confederate forces on April 12, 1861, began the American Civil War. The excellent National Park Rangers' interpretations bring those events vividly to life and set the stage for a better understanding of Civil War history.

You can visit the island and the well-preserved ruins of the fort by boat from the Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square, or from Patriots Point. Or you can get good views of the fort from a 90-minute tour on a sightseeing boat that takes you along the Cooper River to Fort Sumter National Monument.

The tour is fully narrated to provide historical background for Charleston's role in the Civil War and other eras of its history. It also gives good views of other forts, the Civil War prison at Pinckney Castle, the USS Yorktown , and the Ravenel Bridge.

South Carolina's northwest corner, known as Upstate, sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is filled with outdoor attractions. Here you will find the breathtaking Jocassee Gorges, the region's crown natural jewel. It is a series of steep rock walls that send dozens of mountain rivers down waterfalls into the giant 7,5000 Lake Jocassee in Devils Fork State Park.

Surrounded by pines and lush green hardwood forests, Lake Jocassee is a crystal-clear, deep-water reservoir. You can rent canoes, kayaks, and motorboats from one of many outfitters around the lakeshore. Guided pontoon boat tours are also offered and these stop at many of the waterfalls around the lake. If you are an angler, this lake is famed for its trophy-size fish. You'll find many bass and trout species here.

The Jocassee Gorges have the highest number of waterfalls in the eastern U.S. And with more than 75 inches of precipitation annually, this 50,000-acre wilderness area is also the only temperate rainforest east of the Rocky Mountains.

One of the most impressive waterfalls in this area is Whitewater Falls , on the state line with North Carolina. The falls are the tallest cascades east of the Rocky Mountains and begin their 811-foot drop in North Carolina and land in South Carolina.

At Patriots Point, on the other side of the harbor from Charleston's Historic District, you can tour the historic Essex-class aircraft carrier USS Yorktown . Built in 1943, it was the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy, and earned 11 battle stars for service in World War II, later adding five battle stars for service in Vietnam. The USS Yorktown also "starred" in the 1944 documentary film, The Fighting Lady .

More recently, in 1968, the USS Yorktown commanded worldwide attention for recovering the Apollo 8 astronauts. The vessel was retired to Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in 1975, joining submarines and other maritime exhibits that you can tour.

Many of the state's 2,000-plus plantations are open to visitors, and those around Charleston are noted especially for their outstanding gardens. Magnolia Plantation & Gardens is America's oldest publicly accessed garden, begun in the early 1700s and first opened to visitors in 1870. They are unique as America's last grand Romantic-style garden. Middleton Place sits above America's oldest landscaped gardens; the house is fully furnished in its original style.

Boone Hall Plantation & Gardens in nearby Mt. Pleasant is one of the nation's oldest plantations still operating as a working farm and is best known for its picturesque, three-quarter-mile Avenue of Oaks. You get a rare glimpse of original 18th-century craftsmanship in the ornamental details of the interior of Drayton Hall , which is the oldest unrestored plantation house in America that's open for tours.

Along with showing how the owners and their families lived, these plantations now include exhibits, tours, and programs on the lives of the enslaved people who made the plantation lifestyle possible during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Guided tours of Middleton Place include discussions not only about the Middleton family but also the enslaved people and freedmen who served them. Active archaeological studies at Drayton Hall continue to recover artifacts that provide insight into these undocumented lives.

Magnolia's Cabin Project preserves former slave dwellings that serve as the focal point for a 45-minute program on African-American history, highlighting not only the lives of enslaved people, but their later role in maintaining and preserving the estate's magnificent gardens. Boone Hall features a live presentation of the unique Gullah culture developed by African slaves, where descendants of the Gullah people tell the history of this culture through storytelling and song.

An easy 30-minute drive south of Columbia, Congaree National Park covers more than 26,000 acres and is a popular destination for those who enjoy the great outdoors in South Carolina. Home to the USA's largest concentration of tall bottomland old-growth forest, this incredibly scenic area is also one of the country's prime wilderness areas, with over half the park considered an unspoiled habitat that's home to abundant wildlife.

It's also notable for having been designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve . Little surprise, then, that the park is home to an abundance of ecologically important flora and fauna. Wildlife spotters can expect to see everything from bobcats to deer, as well as armadillos and plenty of amphibians.

There's plenty of other fun to be had here, too. Outdoor adventures include extensive hiking trails, kayaking, and canoeing, and guided interpretive experiences.

Caesars Head State Park near Cleveland encompasses the heights of the Blue Ridge Escarpment and is filled with photo ops. The most impressive is from The Overlook near the Visitor Center, with its breathtaking view of Table Rock . The elevation here is 3,208 feet. Also at this stop is the Devil's Kitchen, with a short staircase that takes you into a crack in the rock.

Other highlights are the Raven Cliff Falls Trail which takes you to South Carolina's tallest waterfall , and the Jones Gap Trail, leading to a series of swimming holes.

The escarpment attracts hawks on their migratory route to South America, and Caesar's Head Hawk Site is a count site along the Atlantic Flyway. There are also fishing rivers in the park.

If you are coming here from Greenville, about a 50-minute drive from the Visitor Center, you can make a day of it and stop at nearby Table Rock State Park , where you'll find walking trails, waterfalls, and a pleasant beach for swimming in summer. Wildcat Falls is another hotspot in the area. Located on the roadside on Highway 276, you can wade in the shallow water on the sandy bottom at the base of these falls.

With more than 300 different species of birds found in the park, Huntington Beach is considered the best birding location in South Carolina.

But birds are not the only attraction for tourists who love wildlife. You can usually spot alligators at the park's freshwater lake, and a wide variety of park programming offers chances to observe loggerhead turtles and other endangered species, as well as introduce some of the rare local plants.

Art lovers enjoy the juried Atalaya Arts and Crafts Festival held every September in the former winter residence of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington. The philanthropist and sculptor are also responsible for the neighboring Brookgreen Gardens .

The South Carolina State Museum is the state's largest such facility and a Smithsonian Affiliate. This popular attraction features four floors of exhibits covering South Carolina's natural history, art, culture, science, and technology.

Many of the educational exhibits are hands-on, which makes the museum especially engaging for young visitors. The museum also features a 4-D interactive science theater, a planetarium, and an ever-changing roster of special exhibits.

Set on more than 9,000 acres of former rice plantations south of Myrtle Beach, Brookgreen Gardens combines a sculpture garden, the Lowcountry Zoo , and a wildlife preserve featuring multiple ecosystems. The sculpture is displayed throughout an entire series of themed gardens, which include the Kitchen Garden, Palmetto Garden, and a children's garden.

There's also a terrace garden filled with perennials, roses, and flowering shrubs. The Live Oak Allée of 250-year-old trees dates from plantation days in the early 1700s. Throughout the gardens and in three galleries are displayed more than 2,000 works by 430 artists, the country's largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculpture.

The gardens were founded by Archer Huntington and his wife, the noted sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, in 1932 and were the first public sculpture gardens in America .

Each December, they are transformed into a magical world of colored lights during the Night of a Thousand Candles.

From April through November, South Carolina is a prime destination for deep sea fishing, when avid anglers take to the water in a quest for sailfish, amberjack, cobia, giant blue marlin, barracuda, and other game species.

Unique to the state's waters are the many artificial reefs, more than 40 of which are located off its 3,000 miles of tidal shoreline. Built from scrap metal, including discarded equipment, barges, concrete bridges, and military vehicles, the underwater structures create a habitat for a variety of marine species.

Three coastal areas are especially prime for fishing. The sea near Myrtle Beach has 18 artificial reefs and eight fishing piers, including Apache Pier, the longest wooden fishing pier on the East Coast.

Charleston is the best departure point for the central coast waters, where 13 artificial reefs furnish habitat for several species, including blue marlin. Convenient departure points for the southern coastal waters are Beaufort and Hilton Head Island .

All these regions have plenty of charter companies and equipment rentals, as well as launch sites for private boats; if you plan to use charter services, be sure to book early, as South Carolina's potential for deep sea fishing adventures is no secret.

As if kangaroo and koala joeys weren't enough, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is home to more than 2,000 other animals, representing more than 350 species. The two-acre African Plains exhibit reproduces an African savanna, where you can see giraffes, ostriches, and zebras along with African lions and baboons in their own separate natural habitats.

The Ndoki Forest area is a sanctuary for gorillas, elephants, and meerkats. Siberian tigers and Komodo dragons, among other species, represent Asia, while North American species include grizzly bears and California sea lions. The zoo includes a botanical garden and ziplines.

Art lovers traveling to South Carolina should be sure to include the Columbia Museum of Art on their travel itinerary. Consisting of over 25 galleries showcasing regional, national, and international artworks, it's a delightful way to spend a few hours.

Hilton Head

Nature takes center stage in Hilton Head, where majestic live oaks, sea breezes, and award-winning golf courses often lure visitors in their droves. Plus, speaking of bike-friendliness, Hilton Head is the only Gold-Level community in the Southeast. The Gullah people, who arrived in the area many years before America's independence in 1776, have protected their heritage through several ways, including food and festivals. During the Civil War, newly freed enslaved people of Hilton Head established Mitchelville, the first self-governed freedmen’s town in the United States. Centuries later, Hilton Head still preserves its rich Gullah heritage . The Hilton Head Island Gullah Celebration, typically held in February every year, is among the Southeast's top 20 events. The month-long event is also expected to spruce up business in the traditionally low-key February season. Expect delicious food prepared by Gullah cooks, gospel music, dance, and stories that relive the painful history of the Gullah people.

They are slimy, not full of flavor, but incredibly nutritious. Okra is believed to be native to Africa and is possibly a corruption of the Asante word "nkru-ma" used centuries ago in West Africa as the name for the heat-loving plant. So, how did folks in Irmo start celebrating Okra during a celebration called Okra Day? It has something to do with books — not even food. In the early 1970s, the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club wanted to build a library, but it needed quite a bit of cash. One day, some club members heard a local radio commentator talk about a shop he had seen in town called “the Ancient Irmese General Store.” The commentator wondered what these Ancient Irmese looked like and speculated that they were “probably short people — a farming tribe who lived off okra.” That same year, in October, the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman's Club held a small arts and crafts fair at Seven Oaks Park. They called it “The Okra Strut,” which involved frying up okra. Today, the event is held at Moore Park in late September, typically Friday and Saturday. The Saturday morning parade, brace yourself for this, is the largest of its kind in South Carolina.

Watermelon is sweet and juicy, and loved for its crispy freshness, especially on a hot summer afternoon. One day, a lively conversation took place in the office of Hampton County’s Clemson Extension Agent. The interlocutors included the officer, a local newspaperman, and the mayor. It was at this meeting that the idea of forming a Hampton Boosters Club was suggested. Somehow, watermelons, the plant most associated with the area, would be the identifying brand. In 1939, South Carolina’s Hampton County staged the world's original Watermelon Festival. It has grown to become the oldest continuing festival in the Palmetto State. Only twice has the tradition been interrupted: during World War II (1943-45) and the Korean War (1951). Today, the festival is held each June on the Hampton County Courthouse Square and runs for eight days.

Their forelimbs resemble shovels — or work like shovels — because they are uniquely designed to dig burrows that can stretch up to 40 feet in length. The gopher tortoise, according to scientists, is among the oldest living species on the planet. They spend 80% of their time in the dimly lit burrows — also used by at least 300 other species, including the Eastern indigo snake, the longest native snake on the continent. In the 19th century, Ridgeland was known as Gopher Hill, a reference to the many gopher tortoises that inhabited the sand hills of the area. Today, the Gopher Hill Festival is held during the first week of October and celebrates the town’s association with gopher tortoises with several activities, including turtle races, a heartwarming event for all ages.

It may not come close to Milwaukee Irish Fest, arguably the largest celebration of Irish Culture in the world, but the Camden Irish Fest is also a unique tradition that deserves a mention. It has previously been held at the Historic Camden Revolutionary War Site every first Saturday of March but will henceforth be celebrated on the grounds of Kershaw County Airport. Needless to mention, the festival celebrates the town’s Irish and Celtic heritage. Camden was established by a group of Scots-Irish from Virginia in the 1730s, and hence, is South Carolina’s oldest inland town. During that time, it was known as “Pine Tree Hill.” Expect live Celtic music, Irish dancing, and most of all, the Pub Crawl. Summerville, Sweet Tea Festival

A vibrant town of about 50,000 residents, Summerville is loved for its bright and burbly azaleas, whose seeds, nature seem to sprinkle about like confetti. Yet Summerville should thank sweet tea more for its fame and popularity — not the funnel-shaped flowers. In the years after the Civil War — the U.S. government leased 200 acres in Summerville from the prominent Middleton family for the cultivation of an experimental tea crop. Eight years later, a professor used plants from the leased farm to create Pinehurst. It was the first commercially viable tea farm in the United States. Around 1904, an old soldier’s reunion in town featured copious amounts of tea, ice, and sugar. Food historians believe this was the first time sweet tea was served on a large scale in the nation. Today, Summerville bills itself as the Birthplace of Sweet Tea and celebrates the heritage with a Sweet Tea Festival held every third weekend in September.
