Stop in Shemakha for a tour of Djuma Mosque, the oldest and largest mosque in Azerbaijan, reconstructed in the 19th century, but dating back to the 10th century. Visit the Seven Domes Royal Cemetery. In Sheki, visit the lavish Summer Palace of the Sheki Khans, one of the most prized Azerbaijani architectural gems. Drive to the old Kish Village outside of Sheki to see a church built in the period of Caucasian Albania. Dinner and overnight at Sheki Palace Hotel .

Thursday, May 9: Sheki / Tsinandali, Georgia

This morning, head west to the Georgian border. At Lagodekhi, transfer to Georgian transport and choose from two activities. Hikers may join a guided walk through the Lagodekhi Protected Areas. The path passes through gorgeous hornbeam, oak, and beech forest, leading to the medieval Machi Fortress, which houses a small family church. During the walk, be on the lookout for the likes of Black Redstart, Eurasian Cuckoo, and Bird’s-nest Orchids. Alternately, head to Kvareli and dine with a local family. Try your hand at making churchkhela, a traditional dessert made with grape juice and walnuts. After lunch, see the 17th-century ruins of Gremi city. Visit a traditional Georgian wine cellar and taste an array of wines produced using the ancient tradition—a method inscribed in UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. Dinner and overnight at Tsinandali Estate Georgia Radisson Collection Hotel.

Friday, May 10: Tsinandali / Stepantsminda

Today, drive along the Greater Caucasus, through the jaw-dropping Gombori Pass and up the famous Georgian Military Highway. On the way, visit Ananuri Complex, once home to the Aragvi feudal dynasty. It’s a miracle the complex still stands, given all the battles it endured. The fortress bore witness to the massacre of the Aragvi clan, multiple peasant revolts, and fires. It holds two castles joined by a curtain wall once used for defense, and three churches. The complex looks out over the beautiful Zhinvali Reservoir. This afternoon, arrive in Stepantsminda, a picturesque valley town with the snowy cone of Mt. Kazbek towering over it. Take a birding walk along the Terek River, looking for Wallcreepers, Red-fronted Serins, Ring Ouzels, and more. Dinner and overnight at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi .

Saturday, May 11: Stepantsminda

Rise early for an optional birding excursion to search for Black Grouse, Caucasian Snowcocks, and East Caucasian Tur. After breakfast, visit the spectacularly situated Gergeti Trinity Church. An architectural feat of the 14th century, perched at 7,000 feet and surrounded by high mountains and wildflower-speckled fields, it has become a national symbol of Georgia. This is also an opportunity for some high-altitude birding—search for Mountain Chiffchaffs and Great Rosefinch. After lunch, divide into two groups to either drive through the beautiful Dariali Gorge and enjoy a hike through a narrow, steep-sided gorge to Gveleti Great Waterfall, or return to Stepantsminda for a demonstration of Georgian felt making. Dinner and overnight at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi.

Sunday, May 12: Stepantsminda / Tbilisi

This morning, drive to Chateau Mukhrani, the first true Georgian Royal Chateau, which unites vineyards, a winery, and history. Taste local wines produced using key elements of Georgian traditional winemaking. Enjoy lunch before continuing to Mtskheta, the ancient capital and religious center of Georgia, inhabited since before 1,000 BC. Here, visit the UNESCO World Heritage site of 6th-century Jvari Monastery. On the way to Tbilisi, stop at Lake Lisi for a short birding walk, looking for Little and Great-crested Grebes, Marsh Harriers, shrikes and wheatears. Enjoy dinner in a Tbilisi restaurant. Overnight at Hotel Tbilisi Marriott.

Monday, May 13: Tbilisi

You may choose to rise early this morning for a bird watching excursion to Jandari Lake, where 20,000 migratory water birds overwinter. On and near the water’s edge look for Glossy Ibis, Purple and Squacco Heron, Great Egret, Pygmy Cormorant, kingfishers and a selection of terns. In the surrounding fields, look for Booted and Short-toed Eagles, Hoopoes, bee-eaters, shrikes, Rosy Starlings and beautiful Demoiselle Cranes. Alternately, take the morning at leisure in Georgia’s vibrant capital city. Afterwards, the whole group will join up in the afternoon for a city tour. Perched on the banks of the Mtkvari River, Tbilisi is one of the world’s oldest settlements, dating back to 4,000 BC. Its history as a Silk Road hub has played a role in its ethnic and architectural diversity. A walk from the Persian-style sulfur baths into the old city reveals Georgian and Armenian churches, mosques, synagogues and the ruins of a Zoroastrian fire temple. Visit the 13th-century Metekhi Church. Take a cable car for panoramic views over the town and through the 4th-century Narikala Fortress. Head to a local restaurant for dinner. Overnight at Hotel Tbilisi Marriott.

Tuesday, May 14: Tbilisi / Dilijan, Armenia

Drive to the border with Armenia at Sadakhlo, change guides and vehicles, and continue to the towering 10th-century basalt fortifications of the Akhtala Monastery, famous for its stunning 13th-century frescoes, rarely found in Armenian churches. Continue south to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Haghpat Monastery Complex, founded by Queen Khosrovanush in 976. Among the most outstanding examples of medieval Armenian architecture, the complex houses several churches, a bell tower, repository, and fortress. After lunch at a local restaurant, drive to the spa town of Dilijan, known as Armenia’s “Little Switzerland” due to the densely forested valleys and alpine meadows surrounding it. Tour the Old Town, with its pristine traditional architecture. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, and overnight at Best Western Plus Paradise Hotel Dilijan.

Wednesday, May 15: Dilijan / Jermuk

After breakfast, head to Dilijan Forest to look for Great Spotted and Middle Spotted Woodpeckers, European Nuthatches, Eurasian Tree-creepers, flycatchers, Green Warblers, Eurasian Jays, and more. Continue on to Lake Sevan, the second-largest alpine lake in the world, and “the Emerald of Armenia.” If time permits, visit the simple, and beautifully located, 8th-century Sevanavank Monastery on the lakeshore. After lunch, drive through Selim Pass and visit Selim Caravanserai, once an important trading station on the Silk Road. Continue through the impressive Arpa River Gorge to the resort town of Jermuk, watching for a selection of raptors that could include both Golden Eagle and Bearded Vulture. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Grand Resort Jermuk.

Thursday, May 16: Jermuk / Goris

This morning head to Jermuk Waterfall, known locally as “Mermaid’s Hair,” as the cascade is reminiscent of flowing tresses. Then, take a 4×4-vehicle excursion to Mount Murad to visit remote rock engravings at 10,500 feet, and tombs dating back to 6,000 BC. The site contains an interesting circular enclosure with two strands of stone and a stone arc attached to it, but this, along with much of Armenia’s rich archaeological heritage, has not yet been thoroughly studied. After lunch, head to Zorats Karer, vernacularly known as Karahundi, and referred to as “Armenian Stonehenge.” Karahundi consists of over two hundred stone monoliths, eighty of which have distinctive, well-polished holes bored near their upper edge. It’s believed to be an ancient observatory, as nearby rock paintings were discovered in 2001 that depict astronomic patterns. Continue to Goris for dinner and overnight at Mirhav Hotel .

Friday, May 17: Goris

Goris’ location is second to none, encircled by verdant mountains and thousands of jagged rocks, many of which have dwellings dating back to the Middle Ages carved into them. This morning, explore the area. Drive to nearby Old Khndzoresk, a cave village located on the steep slope of a gorge. Fully inhabited through the 18th century with more than 8,000 residents, this village carved out of rock once boasted homes, schools, cheese factories, churches, and even a bar. After lunch, ride the world’s longest air tramway, “Wings of Tatev.” Visit the 9th-century Tatev Monastery, a staggering architectural mecca built at the “edge of nothing.” Return to Goris for dinner and overnight at Mirhav Hotel .

Saturday, May 18: Goris / Yerevan

After breakfast, head to the exquisite Noravank Monastery, a great religious center of the 12th century, located within a deep red rock gorge, which also accommodates herds of Bezoar Ibex. After lunch, visit the Areni-1 Cave Complex, a treasure trove of Copper Age artifacts including the world’s oldest shoe and wine-making facility. Then enjoy a walk along the Armash Fishponds, an ornithological treasure trove, to look for White-headed Ducks, White-winged Terns, White-tailed Lapwings, cuckoos and many others. Head to Yerevan for dinner at a local restaurant, and overnight at Grand Hotel Yerevan.

Sunday, May 19: Yerevan

Depart early today to Kari Lake on the slopes of Mount Aragats, Armenia’s tallest mountain at 13,400 feet. According to ancient legend, Aragats and Mount Ararat were loving sisters who parted after a quarrel. Choose to climb to the crater rim and follow it to Urtsasar peak for spectacular views. Or, opt to enjoy some fine birding and a visit to Ambert Castle at its base. Return to Yerevan for dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight at Grand Hotel Yerevan.

Monday, May 20: Yerevan

Known as the Pink City thanks to the rosy volcanic tufa used to construct its neoclassical buildings, Yerevan is Armenia’s largest city. Begin your walking tour at Republic Square, and visit the Opera House, Cascade Complex and Victory Park, with its impressive Mother Armenia statue. Take a sobering tour of the Armenian Genocide Museum, with displays commemorating the 1.5 million Armenians exterminated by the Ottoman Empire. Afterwards, drive to Kotayk Province for lunch and a traditional lavash-baking presentation in a local home. Visit the 1st-century pagan temple of Garni. Higher up the Azat River Gorge, find the UNESCO-listed medieval Geghard Monastery. Return to Yerevan for a tour and tasting at its famous brandy factory. Head to a local restaurant for your farewell dinner. Overnight at Grand Hotel Yerevan.

Tuesday, May 21: Yerevan / Home

Transfer to the airport for your early morning international flights home.

This if we say so ourselves, is an outstanding itinerary, capturing the best of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia, one of our favourite regions for cultural adventure.

Taking you from the shores of the Caspian Sea and the splendid history of Baku, through the pretty wine fields of Kakheti and up to the spectacular High Caucasus mountains, you will be following in the footsteps of Silk Road traders, Crusader Knights and Ottoman Princes. Taking you from the shores of the Caspian Sea and the splendid history of Baku, through the pretty wine fields of Kakheti and up to the spectacular High Caucasus mountains, you will be following in the footsteps of Silk Road traders, Crusader Knights and Ottoman Princes. This region, lying at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, is packed with the legends of the Golden Fleece, stunning scenery and warm and hospitable people, with a flourishing food and wine scene.

It also, amazingly, remains relatively unknown even to many experienced travellers and this is the perfect trip for those wanting a diverse experience in an often overlooked part of our world.

Azerbaijan, Georgia & Armenia: Across the Caucasus

Day 1 Tour starts in Baku

tour azerbaijan georgia

Rooms will be available in Baku from this afternoon. Those arriving on the group flights will arrive in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Day 2 Baku: Qobustan rock art & Baku tour

tour azerbaijan georgia

After breakfast, we will head to the UNESCO site of Qobustan, home to over 6000 Stone Age cave drawings, where we will explore the caves and petroglyphs. Then, after lunch at a local restaurant we’ll take a wander around Baku city centre, and discover the quirky architecture. This really is a city of two halves with the ancient walls and heritage buildings juxtaposed with the modern and flamboyant hub in the city. We take in such buildings as the 3 pointed skyscrapers, and  the contemporary landmark of the Zaha Hadid–designed Heydar Aliyev Center, where we pay a visit. We will also make a stop at the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum that displays the largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets in the world, with both modern and historical weaving techniques on show.

Day 3 Baku - Lahij: Walled city, maidan tower and village of Lahij

tour azerbaijan georgia

We’ll have the full morning to enjoy Baku, the Caucasus’s most cosmopolitan city. We’ll focus predominantly on the old walled city and after entering via the Shamaxi gate, we’ll visit the imposing Maiden Tower and the impressive Shirvanshahs’ Palace (both UNESCO World Heritage sites). After lunch we will head west and finally into the foothills of the Caucasus to the picturesque mountain village of Lahij, famed for its coppersmiths and thriving craft trade.

Day 4 Lahij - Sheki: Crafts and traditions of Lahij

tour azerbaijan georgia

In the morning wander around this lovely village, shop in the market and meet some of the locals. Later, we’ll set off to Sheki, once a key trading post, sitting as it does on a major crossroads. This is our base for the next two nights and is one of the country’s highlights.

Day 5 Sheki: Khan’s palace, local market & Kis Village

tour azerbaijan georgia

With a full day in Sheki region, there’ll be time to visit the beautifully renovated Khan’s palace, the museum and local market and head out to the pretty village of Kis to see the round-towered Albanian Church. This afternoon there will be some free time so you can explore Sheki at your own pace.

Day 6 Sheki - Telavi: Local family lunch, Nekreski Monastery & Gremi Church

tour azerbaijan georgia

Today we will transfer to the Lagodekhi checkpoint and cross over into the Kakheti wine-growing region of Georgia. After joining a local family for lunch at their home, we'll drive to the Nekresi Monastery (4th century), once on the Silk Road, and visit the 16th-century Gremi Church complex, a photogenic citadel with splendid views over the surrounding wine country. In the evening we arrive in Telavi.

Day 7 Telavi - Gori: Wine cellars & tasting, State Museum

tour azerbaijan georgia

This morning, before we leave Telavi, we’ll visit the local market. We’ll then visit the 18th century fortified hilltop town of Sighnaghi. On our way to Gori we will make a stop at the Georgian State Museum to see it's stunning treasures.

Day 8 Gori - Kazbegi National Park: Stalin Museum, Uplistsikhe cave city, Ananuri

tour azerbaijan georgia

Gori is infamous not only as one of the focal points of the Russian occupation in August 2008 but also as the birth place of a certain Josef Stalin. Here we will visit the fascinating Stalin Museum (which remains unchanged since its Cold War era opening), before heading on to the ancient remains of the Uplistsikhe cave city. After lunch we’ll start our very scenic drive up through the High Caucasus Mountains along the Georgian Military Highway, which is still a major route linking Georgia with Russia. En route to our night stop at Stepantsminda we’ll visit Ananuri, a 17th century architectural complex, overlooking the Zhinvali reservoir.

Day 9 Kazbegi National Park – Tbilisi: Gergeti Church & Mtskheta

tour azerbaijan georgia

This morning, there will be a chance to take a walk for about 2 hours up through beautiful valleys and forests to the Gergeti Trinity church (14th century) located on top of the mountain (2170m) and one of the country’s most iconic images. Weather permitting, we may also be able to catch a glimpse of one the highest glaciers in the Caucasus – Mt Kazbegi (5047m). We will then enjoy a delicious homemade lunch with a local family, before heading to Georgia’s ancient capital and its religious centre - Mtskheta (3000 years old). This afternoon we will visit two UNESCO World Heritage sites: Jvari church (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where the Robe of Christ is said to be buried. Then we’ll continue on to Georgia’s stunning capital, Tbilisi, where we’ll have 2 nights.

Day 10 In Tbilisi: Old Tbilisi & café culture

tour azerbaijan georgia

In the morning we will have a city tour taking in Old Tbilisi. From the Metekhi Church overlooking the river Mtkvari (13th century) to the Narikala Fortress, one of the oldest fortifications in the city (4th century), we’ll also pay a visit to the Sulphur Baths, the synagogue, the Anchiskhati Church (6th century) and Sioni Cathedral (6/7th century) where the cross of St. Nino – the woman who brought Christianity to Georgia – is preserved. All these sights are in close proximity and it’s a pleasant walk. We then have the rest of the day to soak up the café culture of Tbilisi, relax and shop.

Day 11 Tbilisi – Dilijan (Armenia): Debed Canyon & Haghpat Monastery

tour azerbaijan georgia

After an early breakfast we will drive to the border and cross into Armenia. We will then drive via the stunning Debed Canyon to the Haghpat monastery, built between the 10th and 13th century, before reaching the alpine town of Dilijan.

tour azerbaijan georgia

Travelling further into this ancient land, we will take a spectacular drive via Lake Sevan, one of the world’s largest high altitude lakes (1900m) to the medevial Sevanavank Monastery. En route we will visit the Selim Caravanserai, dating from 1332 and reputed to be the best preserved of its type in the country. Finally we will stop off at the prehistoric site of Karahunj, described as the ‘Armenian Stonehenge’, before arriving in Goris.

Day 13 Goris – Yerevan: Tatev Monastery, Noravank Monastery

tour azerbaijan georgia

This morning we will head to one of the highlights of Armenia – the 9th century Tatev monastery - which is reached by the longest cable car in the world, known as the Wings of Tatev. Reducing Single Use Plastic

We recognise the environmental issues and challenges around single-use plastic in many countries we visit and are actively working with our partners on the ground to reduce plastic waste on our tours and within the hotels and restaurants we visit. You can help to reduce your personal plastic waste by taking a refillable, filtered water bottle with you on your trip. Filtered water bottles can be refilled from water sources including your hotel room and restaurant taps, drinking fountains and refill stations. Every time you refill your bottle without the use of single-use plastic, you will be helping to reduce waste and protect the environment. If you wish to arrange your own flights you are completely free to do so and in this case we can arrange any transfers or supplementary accommodation that you may require. However please note that if you are planning on making your own flight arrangements, we recommend that you first check with us to see if the trip is guaranteed. For more information, please refer to our booking conditions.

Visas are necessary for many of the destinations we travel to and while we aim to provide you with the most up-to-date information, requirements frequently change and as such for the latest advice we advise that you check with the relevant embassies or contact a reputable visa agency. More details can be found here -  https://www.wildfrontierstravel.com/visa

For all destinations, please make sure you are up-to-date with any standard vaccinations (e.g. MMR, Hepatitis A, Tetanus) as recommended by your local health care provider.  For the most up-to-date information on all vaccination requirements and the most suitable anti-malarial tablets, we strongly suggest that you seek advice from your local travel centre or consult an official travel health website such as www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk or www.travelhealthpro.org.uk Covid Testing : No mandatory testing is currently required for vaccinated or unvaccinated travellers. If necessary further details will be sent out to you upon booking, however ensuring that correct and valid visas & vaccinations are obtained remains the sole responsibility of the client.

Key Information

The weather conditions can be extremely varied (even within the course of a day!). The Greater Caucasus Range moderates local climate by serving as a barrier against cold air from the north and the relatively small territory covers different climatic zones, which are determined by distance from the Black Sea and by altitude. The climatic zones range from humid subtropical to snow and glaciers.

IS THIS TRIP FOR ME?

It may sound obvious but Wild Frontiers tours are not always for everyone and it is important to us that the tour you choose is the most suitable. All our tours have a fitness rating as a guideline but you should check the day-by-day itinerary carefully. In certain instances we may ask you to complete a travel questionnaire before confirming your booking in order to ensure your suitability. Should you have any concerns about your ability to partake in any aspect of the tour then please contact the office.

KEY ASPECTS TO CONSIDER

Anyone in a reasonable state of health, with an open mind and a sense of adventure should be perfectly able to cope with this tour, as many of the activities are optional. There will be some long journeys in the vehicles on the tour, so please be prepared for this.

THE NATURE OF ADVENTURE TRAVEL

We feel that it’s worth pointing out that while we will always strive to stick as close to the stated itinerary as possible, it may be necessary from time to time to make changes to our itineraries or services (due to weather, political and religious influences etc.) and this can happen with little or no notice. This unpredictability can be one of the most exciting aspects of adventure travel and for many of our clients often leads to unexpected highlights as the tour-leader necessarily adapts the tour to the changing conditions. However we are aware that this lack of assuredness may not suit everyone. As such, with the greatest respect, if you are someone who needs to know that everything will happen exactly as planned, we would kindly suggest that perhaps our tours are not for you. Adventure travel can be infectious and once you’ve caught the bug, it is likely to never leave you, but especially if this is your first such tour we would strongly urge you to give us a call if you have any concerns whatsoever about your suitability for this trip.

TRAVELLING SOLO AND SINGLE SUPPLEMENTS

As a company approximately 70% of our clients are solo travellers, so it’s very unlikely you’ll be alone!

Our prices are typically based on twin-share accommodation but single supplements are not compulsory for any Wild Frontiers tour. If you prefer not to pay a single supplement we’ll pair you with someone else of the same sex for you to share with throughout the trip. On this trip, if you do opt to pay for a single supplement then please note that it will cover you for all nights of the tour.

Please note that paying a single supplement entitles you to lone occupancy of a single room. In many cases these rooms will be of the same size as a double/twin room, but in some cases they may be smaller.

Insurance that provides cover for emergency repatriation in case of a medical emergency is compulsory for all tours. You should be aware that due to some of the geographical areas visited and some of the activities included on certain of our trips some standard insurance policies may not always provide adequate cover. As such we strongly recommend that you purchase a policy that adequately covers your trip. Please see the Insurance section for more details.

All our tours are priced on a land-only basis, giving you maximum flexibility when deciding how to get to and from your tour.

Description

Accommodation, price options, private tour of georgia, armenia and azerbaijan | 14 days.

Comprehensive tour of all three countries of the South Caucasus, our best-seller holiday package, is a well-balanced itinerary and a great deal to get you packing. While covering major tourist highlights this tour program will still bring you the sense of exclusive “travel like local” experience. The 14-day tour of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia will commence in Baku, capital city of Azerbaijan and one of the most dynamically developing megapolis’s in the area, with its picturesque views over the Caspian sea shore, ancient Oriental architecture and contemporary developments. Tours’ route continues to the North of the country towards its border with Georgia with trips to Absheron peninsula and its burning mountain (literally!), ancient stony village further up the trip, and Sheki town famous for its middle ages royal residence. Georgia will welcome our travelers at the Eastern countryside, region of Kakheti , known as a heart of Georgian winemaking. Followed by the tour of Tbilisi , the journey will also take you to the magnificent Kazbegi mountain with the Gergeti trinity church proudly overlooking the gorge below. Last 5 days of the Caucasus tour will be dedicated to magical Armenia – home to ancient monasteries, charming landscapes and spellbinding legends!

Day 1: arrival in baku (azerbaijan).

Our representative will meet you in the airport and arrange for hotel transfer.

Day 2: Baku city tour (Azerbaijan)

Spend the first day in the region by exploring Baku, Azerbaijan capital city. Your guide will first take you to the “Shehidler Hiyabani” (memory alley) with a picturesque view opening from the site. Keep on wandering the new part of Baku and learn about XIX- XX centuries architecture: Nizami Ganjavi monument, Rasul-Zade Street, Nizami and Fountain square. Continue the tour by entering “Icheri Sheher” (inner town in old Baku) – famous Maiden Tower, Sheikh Shirvan Palace, “Caravanserai”, market. This day will finish with welcome dinner in local restaurant. Transfer to the hotel after dinner.

Day 3: Tour to Absheron peninsula and Gobustan (Azerbaijan)

This day of the Caucasus tour will be dedicated to the travel to Greater Baku area and Absheron peninsula. Depart your Hotel and drive to Gobustan National Park, where you will see the petroglyphs from 10 thousand BC. You will continue the tour by visiting one of the most exciting sites in the area – mud volcanoes in Gobustan. It is believed that almost half of world’s mud volcanoes are in Gobustan. Next stop is an ancient temple of fire worshippers called Ateshgah. Known fact that centuries ago zoroastrians from India passed thousands of kilometers coming to Ateshgah to worship fire literally coming from underground. Azerbaijan is labeled as a “Land of fire” for a reason. “Yanardag” (burning mountain), your next destination, is a place where burning natural gas amazes visitors and wandering strangers for thousands of years. Transfer back to Baku.

Day 4: Tour to Lagich, Kish and Sheki (Azerbaijan)

Depart Baku towards Sheki region of Azerbaijan. Make en route stops at the Sheikh Diri Baba mausoleum and then keep on traveling to Shamakha, visit historical “Juma” (Friday) Mosque, “Yeddi Gumbez” (seven domes) mausoleum, as well as Sheikh Shirvan family graveyard. Breathtaking views offers you the road to Lagich passing Girdimanchay rivers’ canyon. The mountain village itself is a settlement established in the 5th century AD, and allows travelers to dive deep into the regions history and medieval atmosphere with narrow stone walkways. Arrive in the town called Kish, visit the Church of Saint Elishe, also known as 12th century Caucasian Albanian Church (currently inactive). Later in the evening arrival to Sheki, check-in to hotel.

Day 5: Tour to Kakheti (Georgia)

In the morning before driving towards border with Georgia, you will have a brief tour of Sheki. The town is rich on historical, cultural and architectural heritage, with medieval fortress, Palace of Khans, Museum of history, mosque and madrassah, and local handicraft bazar being part of it.

Border with Georgia is about 2-hour drive away from Sheki. You will be met by local guide and vehicle on the other side to continue your exciting Caucasus journey with yet another fascinating country – Georgia.

Your Georgia tour will start with the region of Kakheti famous for its ancient winemaking traditions. Numerous vineyards as well as both big and small wine producing facilities are biggest landmarks of the region. Major highlight of the day is a wine tour and wine tasting at unique wine cellar “Gvirabi” (tunnel) by winemaking company “Khareba”, set inside the tunnel excavated in the XX century deep into the Caucasus mountain range. Next stop before driving to capital city Tbilisi will be the town called Sighnaghi, labeled recently as a “city of love”, mostly for the fact that one can register there their marriage 24/7. Previously a royal residence, Sighnaghi still surrounded by ancient city walls and currently one of the most popular travel destinations in Georgia. Drive to Tbilisi, check-in to hotel.

Day 6: Tbilisi city tour (Georgia)

Georgian capital city for many centuries of its existence was a place where people of all faiths, cultural and national backgrounds used to live together, making Tbilisi a contemporary metropolis filled with history and atmosphere of the rich and great past. Your South Caucasus travel will continue this day with the tour of old Tbilisi: at the Metekhi church and King Vakhtang monument you will listen to the Tbilisi founding legend, continue by cable car to ancient Narikala fortress, walk down to the “Legvtakhevi” (fig) gorge and Tbilisi waterfall, passing by the church and mosque. Tbilisi flea market experience will be followed by stroll through the renovated pedestrian alley and part of the “New Tiflis” major renovation project of Georgian capital. And to make this day special – traditional Georgian welcome dinner will be attended. Transfer to hotel.

Day 7: Tour to Kazbegi (Georgia)

Tour to Georgia would not be complete without a journey to Kazbegi, a small town close to the border with Russia. The tour itinerary for this day will start with the Jvari monastery, architectural gem of the Caucasus, located on top of the hill overlooking major Georgian highlights – its old capital town Mtskheta; famous two rivers merging point where Mtkvari river meets river Aragvi; and transport highway entering Tbilisi. Another site worth making a stop on the way is Ananuri fortress – established in XVI century as a residence for local Dukes of Aragvi the complex is still a place that impresses all those passing by with its nobility and greatness. Other attractions en route include exciting view of two small mountain rivers making one, and flowing side by side without mixing their colors for quite a distance; also a picturesque mountain landscape viewpoint followed by the “Cross” pass. Arrive in Kazbegi, change a vehicle for 4-wheel-drive cars to get to Gergeti Holy Trinity church, nestled on top of one of the highest hills at 2170 meters above sea level. Drive to mountain resort Gudauri for overnight. Transfer to hotel.

Day 8: Tour to Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta (Georgia)

After breakfast in the hotel start driving back towards Tbilisi with the stops in Uplistsikhe and Mtskheta on the way. From Gudauri in about 2-hour drive the group will arrive to the cave town Uplistsikhe – the magnificent remains of an ancient pagan settlement where all the houses used to be carved inside the rocks. Continue your Caucasus tours’ Georgian part by visiting a local family’s private wine cellar for house wine tasting and homemade lunch. After lunch arrive to Mtskheta, old capital town of ancient Georgia and one of the most important historical cities of the country. Visit the old town and its principal sight – Svetitskhoveli monastery. The name of the monastery means “living pillar” and it is widely believed that the place is a burial site of Jesus Christ’s mantle. Being one of the principal churches in Georgia, the monastery is also one of the most revered places in Caucasus. Transfer to Tbilisi.

Day 9: Tour from Tbilisi to Yerevan (Armenia)

Check-out from your Tbilisi hotel in the morning and depart towards the border between Georgia and Armenia (about 1.5-hour drive). On the other side, you will be met by local guide and driver to start touring the last destination country of the Caucasus tour – Armenia.

The first Armenian site to visit is Haghpat monastery, the X century architectural monument and UNESCO World Heritage list member, in the region of Lori. The next attraction of the tour is what is called a Jewel of Armenia – lake Sevan, the largest freshwater alpine lake in Caucasus and Eurasian region. Total surface area of the lake is 1900 square miles which comprises a sixth part of Armenia. Arrive to Sevanavank (Sevan monastery), ancient monastic complex which beautifully set in one of the coasts of lake Sevan and features two major churches – Surp Arakelots (Holy Apostles) and Surp Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God), founded in the year of 847 by Princess Mariam. Another distinguishing feature of the site is a magnificent view that surrounds the place – snowy mountains everywhere your eyes could see.

Arrive in Yerevan, check-in to hotel.

Day 10: Yerevan city tour (Armenia)

Sightseeing tour of Armenian capital is yet another exciting day of your travel to Caucasus. You will see how different it is from two previous capitals, especially with its colors – Yerevan has a distinguished color in its basic architecture (spoiler: it’s pink!). This city tour will start with probably the most adventurous part – Cascade Monument. Interesting fact about this place is that it has 2780 stairs to walk up, exactly the number of years Yerevan has celebrated recently. Walking up these stairs does have its reward – a fascinating view over the city, with gorgeous Ararat mountain, central square of Republic, major city avenue and beautiful Opera theatre building – all in a magic full view. And, as usual, the city tour of Armenian capital will complete with the national cuisine dinner and traditional folklore show. Transfer to hotel.

Day 11: Tour to Garni, Geghard and Etchmiadzin (Armenia)

Continue your South Caucasus tour with a following program:

In the morning leave Yerevan for the Armenian village called Garni with its principal highlight – ancient pagan fortress of the I century BC. Drive to Geghard, IV century medieval monastery partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, and yet another UNESCO World heritage list site. Continue to the see of Vagharshapat and visit the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, known as “mother-church” of the Armenian Apostolic Church and residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians. Drive back to Yerevan, transfer to hotel.

Day 12: Tour to Khor Virap, Areni, Tatev (Armenia)

The 2-day trip to Tatev in Armenia will start with the visit to Khor Virap (deep dungeon) monastery placed in the Ararat plain and used to be the residence for Armenian Catholicos. This monastery’s fame and a religious pilgrimage status came with the fact that St. Gregory the Illuminator, the Baptist of Armenia, spent 14 years here as a prisoner for disseminating Christianity. Next stop of the day tour in Armenia will be small town Areni, famous for its traditional wine made of pomegranates and apricots. Wine tour and tasting here is definitely a highlight.

Final stop for the day is IX century’s Tatev monastery itself. To get to the monastery you will be taking the longest non-stop cableway in the world (5.7 km). Views that opening to travelers are simply indescribable – you will have to see it with your own eyes. Transfer to the town of Goris for overnight.

Day 13: Tour to Noravank (Armenia)

After a lazy morning and delicious breakfast served in the hotel in Goris depart back to Yerevan. Make en route stop at the Noravank (new monastery) complex. The location of the site within the narrow gorge of Amaghu river is making you feel being in times when the monastery was founded – in 1205. Not mentioning the architectural style of the Complex itself – highly artistic monument reminiscent of the tower-like burial structures of the first years of Christianity in Armenia.

Transfer to hotel in Yerevan.

Day 14: Departure from Yerevan (Armenia)

Check-out from your hotel before 12 pm. Airport transfer.

We had a 17 day tour to the Caucasus last month and really felt regret heading back to our country. The tour gave us many unforgettable memories, and even the broken conditioner in the hotel in Tbilisi couldn’t spoil the highly positive impression we had as the hotel staff quickly managed the issue. Earnest thanks to Arara tours for such a great experience!

David Johnson

Had an amazing journey to three Caucasian countries with Arara tours. The tour was planned thoroughly, the itinerary was quite smooth and covered many breathtaking and interesting sights. The only problem was periodically heavy traffic in Yerevan and Tbilisi, especially in peak hours, but it’s not a really big deal as the hotels were centrally located. We enjoyed the evening walks around the capitals. Special highlights of the trip were the guides, Inna, Luka and Raffi.

Phoebe Abelson

I am delighted to write this review because I can not keep my emotions to myself. I have never traveled outside of North America and I am so happy I did. It was quite an experience. My family was a bit concerned about my tour to a region that far, but with Arara tours I had a peace of mind the whole time. I must say, as someone who loves to take photos, I have taken so many of them during my trip. The hotels were really good and in the city centers, I especially enjoyed the view from Brim hotel. The tour guides were really knowledgeable and good at their work, especially in Georgia and Armenia, and they kindly answered all my questions. They were proud to show their countries and were very enthusiastic while telling the history. Thank you Hasmik for the great recommendations for restaurants and for joining me for dinner.
