Arrive at Srinagar

Arrive at Srinagar before 8 AM. Make sure to shoot some amazing visuals of the Himalayas before your flight lands. Left-side seats are better for this.

Have breakfast and go for a city tour, covering the following places. You can hire a cab or an auto for this.

travel ke kashmir

You can spend around 30 - 45 minutes in each of these places.

Post the city tour, you can proceed for lunch. You can try out some of the following restaurants.

travel ke kashmir

Post lunch, proceed towards Dal lake and check into your hotel. You can also stay in one of the houseboats in Dal lake. Listing down some recommendations for your stay:

travel ke kashmir

After you checkin, rest till evening. In the evening, proceed towards Dal Lake for an amazing sunset boat ride. The ride typically lasts for 1 - 1.5 hours and shall cost you about INR 500 - 800 per person. Make sure that you bargain. During the ride, you will come across people in boats selling snacks, kahwa (traditional Kashmiri tea), artifacts, etc. You will also pass by the floating market. The prices here can be a tad bit more expensive compared to land costs.

Post the boat ride, you can have dinner and call it a day.

On day 2, finish your breakfast early and proceed towards Pahalgam. You can hire a cab for this. The journey from Srinagar to Pahalgam should take about 2 - 3 hours. En route, you will pass by saffron fields, apple orchards and cricket bat factory. You may also purchase dry fruits and saffron from any of the shops on the way.

On arrival at Pahalgam, check into your hotel. The following are our recommendations:

travel ke kashmir

Post lunch, proceed towards Pahalgam taxi stand. You can hire a pony here to visit places such as mini Switzerland, Kashmir valley, Pahalgam valley, etc. The cost of pony will depend upon the places that you want to visit and should range from INR 4000 - 5000 per person. Again, make sure to bargain. This should take about 4 - 5 hours to complete.

P.S. Even though this experience is slightly expensive, we strongly recommend it. The views are to die for, and movies such as Bajrangi Bhaijan were shot in these places.

Post this trip, return to your hotel for dinner and call it a day.

Pahalgam and return to Srinagar

Post breakfast, proceed to Pahalgam taxi stand. Please note that the cabs you hired from Srinagar are not allowed here, and you need to hire local union cabs from the taxi stand to visit Aru Valley, Betab Valley, and Chandanwari. During winter months, you may hire a sled in these valleys since walking can be a bit taxing in the cold weather. Gumboots will be available for rent in front of the entrance of these places. You can spend 1 - 1.5 hours in each of these places.

travel ke kashmir

Once you cover these places, you can return to Srinagar. En-route, visit Avantipur ruins.

travel ke kashmir

In the evening, you may visit Lal Chowk market or take a stroll along the banks of Dal Lake.

On day 4, finish your breakfast early and proceed towards Gulmarg. You can hire a cab for this. The journey from Srinagar to Gulmarg should take about 1.5 - 2 hours. Please note that during winter months, depending on road conditions, your vehicle may not be allowed in Gulmarg and you may have to hire a local union cab. Here also, on the top, you may hire a sled during the winter months. You can also rent jackets, gumboots, etc. here. The main attraction in Gulmarg is the Gondola ride. The queue for getting the tickets can sometimes be very long, so plan on reaching Gulmarg early. It is also possible to book these tickets online. Gondola has two phases. The ticket price will depend upon the phase that you want to visit.

You can also try out activities such as skiing and snowboarding here. You may spend 4 - 5 hours here, depending upon the crowd and number of activities that you want to do.

Post this, definitely visit Drung waterfall, especially if you are visiting during the winter months. The frozen waterfall is one of the best natural sights that you will see in your life!

travel ke kashmir

You may choose to spend the day in Gulmarg, or return to Srinagar in the evening.

The following are some of our recommendations for stays in Gulmarg:

travel ke kashmir

The journey from Gulmarg to Sonmarg can take 3 - 3.5 hours. If you are traveling from Srinagar, it will take 2 - 2.5 hours.

The biggest attraction of this place is the Thajiwas Glacier. You can hire a pony similar to Pahalgam here also.

travel ke kashmir

Return to Srinagar in the evening.

Departure from Srinagar

Check out from your hotel post breakfast and proceed towards with lots of memories to be cherished for a lifetime!

1. The land cost in Kashmir is expensive compared to other destinations (for hiring pony, local cabs, renting winter wear, etc.). Make sure that you bargain for a fair price and also carry sufficient amount of cash with you. While ATMs are available in Srinagar, they are sparsely available in other locations and online payment is not always an option.

2. If you are traveling during winter, make sure to carry sufficient amount of winter wear such as thermals, jackets, sweaters, etc. While gumboots are available for rent in places with heavy snow, you must carry woollen socks and a good pair of shoes.

3. Make sure to carry your essential medicines with you since medical shops may not be accessible everywhere.

4. While aerial shots of Kashmir are beautiful, make sure that you ask around for local regulations related to flying a drone.

5. Please leave for airport early on your departure day since there is security checking before entering the airport. Please make sure to factor in atleast 30 - 45 minutes for this, based on the crowd at the airport.

Kashmir Travel Tips: 17 Important Things To Remember Before Going On A Trip To Kashmir

Are you planning a trip to Kashmir this year? If yes, then I can guarantee you that you are going to have an experience of your lifetime. But, before you travel, have you gathered enough information about the things to do or don’ts in Kashmir? If you haven’t done that yet then you have come to the right place. Let’s check out the things you must remember before going to Kashmir .

Kashmir had always been on my bucket list. Probably it is there on every Indian’s bucket list. This year I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to travel to Kashmir. And, I had one of the best times traveling across the true Paradise on Earth .

But while traveling in Kashmir I experienced that there are a few things that every traveler must know about Kashmir. Or, you might end up having some unpleasant experiences. But don’t worry. Go through the below list that will clear your doubts about the things you need to know before going to Kashmir.

#1. Prepaid Sim does not work in Kashmir

If you are an Indian( non-resident of Kashmir) or a foreigner, your regular prepaid mobile sim card is not going to work in Kashmir . Due to safety purposes, the Indian government only allows a postpaid network to work in Kashmir.

This is an important fact to know before traveling to Kashmir. Postpaid networks of Vodafone, Airtel, and Jio work fine. I would recommend you to carry a Jio postpaid sim card as in most of the places Jio network was available. Vodafone is the worst of the three. It gave me a terrible time in Pahalgam as it didn’t work at all.

So, before arriving in Kashmir you can talk to your trip moderator or driver for arranging a local sim card for you. Or it’s better to travel to Kashmir with a postpaid sim card.

#2. WIFI does not work well in Kashmir

Internet connectivity in Kashmir is comparatively poor than many other hill stations in North India. If you need Wifi while in Kashmir get that clarified with the hotel owners. Not all hotels or houseboats provide you with a Wifi.

Wifi speed is very poor in Kashmir. So, if you are only depending on hotel wifi you might find yourself in trouble. So, it is advisable to carry at least one postpaid connection with a group of tourists.

#3. Shared transport is not available

Traveling solo in Kashmir is a problem as shared transport in Kashmir is not frequently available. It makes solo traveling costly.

Public buses and shared taxis are not available frequently. Though cabs are available at the airport and Srinagar taxi stand which you can book for longer hours. In the Pahalgam market taxi stand, you can hire cabs to visit places around Pahalgam . You can find cabs for Gulmarg from the Tangmarg check post.

But, if you are traveling with friends or family, it is advisable to book a cab for your complete tour. It may cost you a few extra bucks but it will be really helpful to have a driver with you who will be your help as you will find many tourist traps in Kashmir.

#4. Reach Srinagar airport 2 hours before the departure of the scheduled flight

If you traveling from Kashmir by air then during a departure you must reach Srinagar airport at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time.

Though it is mentioned for every domestic flight in India to reach 2 hours before the departure time you can still board a flight if you reach at least 45 minutes before. But the departure from Kashmir is a must-to-do.

It is advised to do so as you would have to go through two more extra layers of checking. The check-in baggage is scanned and tagged at the Airport entrance and given to you. Then you can enter the airport with your baggage. But now, you cannot open your check-in baggage.

It is done to ensure the security of the passengers. As Kashmir is a highly sensitive zone the government of India imposes these extra sets of precautions.

#5. Beware of tourist scams in Kashmir

Kashmir is a dream destination for many of us. But many people have an unpleasant experience in Kashmir as they got scammed. Yes, you heard me right, Kashmir is full of tourist traps that you may not be aware of.

There are many traps like the “ I will take you there scam ”, “ Shikara ride scam ”, “ Baisaran valley pony ride scam”, “Slaze-ride scam”, and “Gulmarg tour guide scam”.

But if you are aware beforehand you will be able to protect yourself from unforeseen problems. For this reason, having a local driver cum guide helps.

#6. Do not buy anything in Shikara

There is nothing more relaxing than an easy Shikara ride in the Dal lake. Watching the sun rise and set on the Shikara is a pleasure to cherish forever. But we are not alone in our Shikara ride. You will find a bunch of local traders getting close to your Shikara on their ferries.

No, don’t worry they are not harmful but the problem is that they are relentless. They will not leave you easily until they get to sell you something. But, do not buy anything from them . You might be thinking why? What’s wrong with helping these poor local vendors?

The big problem is that most of these sellers will scam you and you wouldn’t even know. Firstly, they will ask you for some absurd price. Or they will ask a very low price which you would not be able to say no to. And, in most cases, you will get fake products. So, it’s better to avoid buying from these small sellers.

Note: I am in no way against these small sellers. I was very much intrigued by their lifestyle around Dal lake. But I have seen many people getting conned in that. So, I am just trying to help you out. Even during one of my Shikara rides, the ferryman asked us “Sir, do not buy anything from them, when they get close we cannot help you even if we know what’s wrong.”

#7. Carry Sunglasses, Sunscreen lotion

You must carry a pair of sunglasses( preferably refractor glasses), Sunscreen lotion if you are visiting Kashmir. The weather is very dry in Kashmir valley and there is a high chance of getting sunburn.

In Gulmarg, while there is snow covering around there is a high chance of getting a sunburn. You must put on your sunscreen lotion and refractor glasses if you are visiting Apharwat peak by Gondola. That would be helpful.

#8. Say “No”

In Kashmir, you will be approached by a hundred touts throughout your journey. But, that does not mean you should agree to all of them. You would find many sellers approaching you for selling saffron, Pashmina shawls, wooden works, etc.  Put them off by saying “ No ” if you are not interested.

In Gulmarg, almost 20 people approached me asking to take a Slaze ride. They will say that you will not be able to walk through the snow. That’s a big lie. A Slaze is a piece of a wooden platform that is pulled by rope while you will be sitting on it.  They will push you to your limits but stay firm to your answer and say “No”. And always confirm the rate before taking any ride.

#9. Always bargain

If you are poor at bargaining then you may find yourself in deep trouble. They will quote us an absurd price. I can remember I got the same showpiece from a store near Gulmarg at INR 50 that I didn’t buy at INR 300 from Meena Bazar.

In Pahalgam, we were asked for 2500/ per person for the Baisaran valley horse ride. We started bargaining from 800/ person and ultimately finalized at 1100/ person. You can see the difference. So, always try to bargain as hard as you can.

Though I cannot blame them completely. Tourism is their main source of income. What they will make during the peak season will help them during their off-season. It’s the same with every place in the country.

#10. Carry dresses according to the season

You must carry your dresses according to the season you are visiting.

In Kashmir, Summer from May-Aug can be extremely hot. But you will find it much cooler during the night. So, you can just carry regular clothes along with a thermal.

During winter, when it snows during Dec-Feb temperature drops below 0 °C. You must woolen thermals along with winter jackets. And don’t forget to carry water-repellant gloves.

You should always carry waterproof shoes along with you. It would be good if that is high ankle or You can carry separate gaiters alongside.

#11. Carry an original ID card

You should carry any one of your original ID cards which has your address and photograph( preferably Voter ID, Aadhar Card, Passport, Driving License, etc.) They may not allow photocopies.

#12. Check Covid-guidelines before traveling to Kashmir

There are no quarantine rules or swab tests at the Srinagar airport. You don’t have to show your RTPCR test reports too. For Indian residents, you will only have to show your double vaccination report. Please carry a printout of your vaccination report.

Note : Covid related guidelines change frequently. So, check government websites for more details before your visit.

#13. Hiring a Kashmiri driver helps

J&K police are strict and will do repeated checks here and there. As we all know that Kashmir is always on high alert, they will check everyone they suspect. If you are arriving from outside Kashmir with a non-local driver you will face more checks.

As they want you to be safe they will not allow a non-Kashmiri driver on unknown routes after dark. But they will allow local drivers who are aware of the surroundings much better than anyone else.

#14. You need to hire a cab from Pahalgam to visit Aru, Betaab, and Chandanwari

You need to hire a cab from Pahalgam Taxi Stand even if you are coming with your car. I found this to be a bit strange practice but I can’t help it. The local taxi union does not allow other cars to go beyond that point. So, we had to hire that. It is what it is.

The good part is that the Pahalgam taxi rates are pre-determined and you can book separate types of car as per your need.  You don’t have to bargain like everywhere else.

#15. Carry your medicines, power bank, and enough cash

Kashmir is still far away from modern cities. So, you won’t get medicine shops or ATMs outside Srinagar that easily. So it’s better to carry enough cash and required medicines. You won’t see many shops having POS machines available.

Though they have digital payment options like Gpay, Phonepe, etc. available with them nowadays. As the network is unstable in Kashmir, it is better not to solely depend on digital payment options.

You should also carry a power bank with you as it could be required to keep your phone charged.

#16. No liquor shops in Pahalgam and Gulmarg

There are no liquor shops available in Gulmarg or Pahalgam. There are very few even in Srinagar as alcohol consumption is not popular among the localities due to religious beliefs. Though tourists are allowed to consume alcohol. But if you are planning to have some, you may find it difficult to buy some in Pahalgam, Gulmarg, or Sonmarg. So, buy accordingly in Srinagar or bring some along with you.

Note : Yes, tourists are allowed to consume alcohol. But, you should not go overboard while drinking and disrespect the local culture. Always be courteous towards their religious beliefs.

#17. No OLA, Uber/ Zomato, Swiggy

Ola or Uber cab services are not available in Kashmir till now. So, please be careful while you are roaming around places there and late-night outings are not at all advisable due to safety reasons.

Services of food delivery apps like Zomato, and Swiggy are not available in Kashmir. But, I don’t think you would need that in Kashmir. This place is a food lover’s paradise and you can get amazing street foods in food joints in Srinagar. Going local is the way to enjoy it.

Tips & Itinerari ke Kashmir! Sesuai untuk anda yang ingin bercuti bersama keluarga

by Diana Toma · Published December 1, 2022 · Updated December 1, 2022

Trip to the ‘Paradise on Earth’!

travel ke kashmir

Trip ini merupakan trip sekeluarga (3pax) selama 8 hari 7 malam. Masa tu dekat sana tengah musim sejuk ye. Total kos kesana around 7.5k (3 pax) inc flight, visa, insurans, hotel 6 malam, transport, simcard, entrance fee, segala activiti, makan, shopping & tips.

travel ke kashmir

Tips murah!

  • Book semua hotel direct owner
  • Sewa kereta untuk perjalanan yang jauh je, contoh mcm kami ada 8 hari di Kashmir, sewa kereta cuma 4 hari. Selain dari tu pakai auto rickshaw
  • Semua benda kena bargain bargain bargainnnn!

travel ke kashmir

  • Delhi – Srinagar by Spicejet (Free 15kg luggage)
  • Srinagar – Delhi by Indigo (Free 15kg luggage)
  • Total flight: RM1,517.00/pax
  • Tiket flight beli 2 bulan sebelum. Rezeki dapat beli time Air Asia buat promo. Tanpa reschedule, tanpa cancel. Alhamdulillah
  • Amek flight malam ke New Delhi dari KL. Flight ke Srinagar amek yang paling awal. So sampai je boleh sightseeing area Srinagar
  • Untuk ke Kashmir, nama airport dia ialah Srinagar Airport. Takde flight direct ke Kashmir. Kena transit Delhi dulu, then amek domestik flight Delhi ke Srinagar
  • Nak beli tiket Delhi-Srinagar-Delhi boleh beli dkt apps Air Asia jugak. Sebab kalau beli website Indigo contohnya, payment kena dalam Rupee. So susah sikit & bila convert dia jadi mahal
  • Better beli dekat Air Asia, ada banyak flight ke Srinagar, SpiceJet, Indigo, Vistara, GoAir
  • Indigo paling best! Besar & selesa. Domestik flight diaorg ada bagi free 15kg. Tak kisah spice jet or Indigo. Semua ada free luggage check in. Nak senang check-in kan semua luggage. Hand carry letak barang yang senang je
  • Masuk ke domestic departure 3-4 jam awal sebab semua benda kena punggah satu-satu
  • Airport kat sana sangatlah ketat. Semua benda kena keluarkan. Kasut pun kena scan ye

  • Kat sana memang banyak rickshaw so tak perlu risau

  • Deal dengan orang transport tu untuk airport transfer, pick up & drop off standard harga 2000r

  • Hotel Golden Sands (2N) @ Srinagar : 4000INR
  • Hotel Affarwat-B/D (1N) @ Gulmarg : 5000INR

  • Nak pergi ke houseboat kena naik shikara
  • Pilih houseboat area Dal Lake. Kalau nak high class sikit area Nigeen Lake
  • Dah book houseboat tanya owner Ghat/gate berapa. Sebab sana banyak gate
  • Kalau stay houseboat make sure ambil sekali dengan breakfast & dinner sebab susah nak pergi ke darat. Semua kena naik shikara
  • Mcm Wanee tak amek pun sebab before balik ke houseboat dah tapau siap-siap makanan
  • Semua hotel/houseboat memang book direct owner/manager dia. Alhamdulillah semua hotel yang dipilih bersih & puas hati!
  • First, buka google maps, search je area mana nak stay and akan banyak hotel keluar
  • Baca review betul-betul. Pilih tempat yang strategik. Dah pilih, boleh save no contact diaorg & WhatsApp
  • Bagi details semua & deal with bargain ok? Mcm mana nak bargain? First dia akan bg harga, then korang letak harga kurang lagi dari tu. Then deal la sampai puas hati. Settle
  • Tolong jangan booking with Agoda/booking. Sebab diaorg akan beri houseboat lain
  • Kalau pergi time winter tolong pastikan hotel/houseboat ada centrally heater, blanket heater, & shower heater. Kalau tak pasti, tanya ye! Ni yang paling penting, kalau takde tu merana la duduk dalam kesejukan. Sometimes suhu boleh jadi negatif!
  • Kalau nak stay area Gulmarg, Sonamarg or Pahalgam please book sekali dengan dinner & breakfast sebab tempat-tempat macam ini susah sikit nak dapat makanan malam-malam plus korang akan keletihan nak keluar sebab seharian penat beraktiviti
  • Kalau area Dal Lake tak ambil pun takpe sebab boleh ja keluar jalan kaki cari makan

travel ke kashmir

  • Airtel (1.5gb/day) 200INR/RM11.54

  • Sama juga kalau beli kat Kashmir, tak boleh pakai kat Delhi. Rumit sikit bab ni
  • Alhamdulillah rezeki kiteorg, driver kami ada extra, so dia bagi pinjam. Just topup je 200rs/RM12 untuk 1.5gb per day. Cukup ke? Cukup
  • Deat hotel pakai wifi, dalam kereta pakai hotspot driver
  • Kalau jalan sendiri-sendiri je on data

travel ke kashmir

  • Makanan kat sana sumpah sedap-sedap gila! Portion banyak, 1 portion boleh makan 2 orang
  • Nasi selambak! Makanan diaorg banyak berasaskan rempah & kari. Menu utama, kambing, ayam, daging. Ikan susah dapat & harga agak mahal
  • Tujj bbq dia, briyani, semua sedap
  • Cuma jangan la makan tepi-tepi jalan sesuka hati, takut perut terkejut. Tak pasal-pasal mencirit je nanti
  • As long as kalau rasa dia sesuai untuk dibeli & dimakan silalah beli

travel ke kashmir

  • 5000INR/RM289
  • Kalau nak shopping, elakkan shopping di area houseboat. Tak kisah atas shikara ke, di Meena bazar floating market ke, dkt area gate ke sebab memang akan ada penjual datang dekat shikara korang jual itu ini. Mahal gila dia letak harga!
  • Kalau nak shopping pergi local market area Lal Chowk, Dargah market. Situ murah-murah & still boleh bargain
  • Dekat Kashmir banyak shawl, sari. Memang cantik-cantik. Jangan lupa bargain!

travel ke kashmir

  • 1000INR/RM58

  • Dekat Kashmir memang kena standby tips lebih, semua nak tips
  • Tolong bawa gi bilik pun nak tipsss! Anggaran bagi tips dlm 50-100 rupee

Tapi perjalanannya sangatlah mencabar. Extreme gila! Lalu sebelah lereng bukit, curam, licin, berlecak aih macam-macam lah. End up diaorg akan tanya, “how much your budget?” Ha time tu bg la harga ikut kewarasan.
Maybe diaorg nak support each other. So cite dia mmg kena ambil other cab. Wanee pilih van aja. Murah. 2100rupee per van untuk 3 tempat

  • Lepas breakfast dekat hotel, terus check out straight ke Sonamarg. Amek masa 4 jam perjalanan

  • Check in Imperial Resort – Dinner @hotel
  • Total Expenses:- Tips beg – 20rs, Breakfast – 90rs, Pony ride – 3000rs, Meggi – 240rs, Tips ponyman – 50rs Total: 3,400rs/RM196.18

  • Lunch kiteorg makan dkt Winterfell Cafe. Weh sumpah sedapppp gila makanan kat sini. Harga pun tak mahal. Western food cam biasa tak boleh tinggal kemana saja. Haha. Tapau siap-siap untuk dinner
  • Pergi Pari Mahal then check in houseboat – Rest
  • Total Expenses:- Taxi cab – 2000rs, Pari Mahal – 50rs, Lunch – 1674rs Total: 3,724rs/RM214.87

travel ke kashmir

  • Sediakan satu file isi semua salinan dokumen-dokumen penting, since kitaorg mmg DIY without agent so benda ni semua kena alert. Fotostat IC, sijil lahir anak, mykid anak, kad kawin, salinan visa, salinan passport, itinerary, flight details, Air suvidha form, mysejahtera & etc
  • Air suvidha tu form wajib isi untuk nak masuk India. Mcm Covid certificate. Lebih kurang. Boleh dapatkan link dkt google. Submit & dia akan send dkt email korang then print
  • Kashmir lambat 2jam 30minit dari Malaysia
  • Adapter kat sana 2-pin bulat. So beli travel dapter siap-siap. Cari kat DIY
  • Tolong bawak pen hitam sbb nanti kat airport Delhi kena isi arrival form
  • Bawak iron. Hotel kat sana diaorg takde sediakan iron
  • Untuk baju-baju winter Wanee & husband banyak beli Uniqlo & H&M. Untuk Aqra beli kat Shopee. Actually time winter memang kena keluar duit lebih sikit sebab nak beli kelengkapan winter tak murah ye, habis almost 3k jugak shopping baju-baju semua tapi worth it. Boleh pakai lagi untuk next trip
  • Standby duit kecil banyak-banyak untuk tips. Kalau pergi restaurant ke apa bagi je duit besar
  • Sebelum naik rickshaw, confirmkan harga dulu. Jangan naik sebelum tak deal lagi ok? Kalau dia suruh naik tanpa bagitahu berapa harga jangan naik, nanti bila sampai lain dia bagi harga
  • Kalau pergi waktu winter, vaseline paling WAJIB! Pakai setiap masa. Baik lelaki atau perempuan. Kalau tak bibir korang kering. Dahla kering, mengelupas, pedih pulak tu.
Jimat
  • Naik flight boleh bawak makanan & minuman luar. Tak kisah international or domestic. Dua-dua boleh. Nak jimat beli siap-siap

Kashmir Travelogue – A Few Days in Paradise

kashmir travelogue

This article, and the next ones in the series, are an account of my first visit to Kashmir. While writing this Kashmir Travelogue, I am really hoping to give you a true picture of how you can plan a trip here, things you should keep in mind, places you must explore, and experiences that you must gain.

Forbidden paradise is what I was calling it before the trip actually. My thoughts on Kashmir were the same as the rest of the world. The very idea of visiting Kashmir makes people nervous and it did the same with me.

But then things changed when I went and spent some time there, rode my bike through its valleys, and got talking to its people. My trip to Kashmir was much more than enjoying the lush green mountains and clicking numerous photos. It was an experience in itself, one that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

If you have any questions, you can contact me on Instagram . For all other details on Kashmir like mobile connectivity, public transport, taxi services, and several other tips, please take a look at How to Plan a Trip to Kashmir – A Complete Travel Guide .

For getting the best hotel rates, and taxi charges, and to organize your trip to Kashmir, you can speak with Kunal @ 9910 402 252. Give him my reference and you will surely get a discounted rate.

Quick Navigation

Kashmir Travelogue

The first time I landed in Srinagar was about a decade ago while returning from Ladakh. Was I nervous back then? Yes definitely. I stayed in the city for a night and got out first thing the next morning.

The same routine followed in the coming years as well. Kashmir was just a stopover while we went riding to Ladakh. The only place I visited in all these years was Dal Lake in Srinagar city and that was pretty much it. Never did it occur to me to spend some time in Kashmir itself and visit the place that is known as a Jannat for its scenic beauty.

But after exploring the Himalayan regions of Uttarakhand, Himachal, Ladakh, and Spiti for years, Kashmir was bound to happen sooner or later.

Where to Go?

It all really started with a simple idea and that too several months in advance. A close friend of mine, Shoaib, and I were talking about how it had been a long time since we were out on a long trip together. We agreed we must plan a trip to someplace new sometime soon.

We talked about a few places and I suggested Kashmir, which neither of us had really been to. After that, there was not really much of a discussion and we both immediately agreed.

Next came the question of when. Through my blog, I met a Srinagar Local a few years ago. Faisal runs a motorcycle rental agency in the city. I called him and he suggested that we should plan for either August or September as it would be all lush green then.

Neither Shoaib nor I could afford to be away from work in September, and visiting Kashmir before or around the 15th of August did not sound like a good idea. Hence 3rd week of August was finalized.

vargis khan

How and When?

After that came “for how long”. This one proved to be a really short discussion because 9 days were all that we could afford, including 2 weekends.

Last but not least was the question of how to go. First, we thought about traveling by my Thar. But that meant 2 days spent going to Srinagar from Delhi, and then 2 days coming back home. So out of 9 days, we will spend 4 days just going to and coming back from Kashmir.

Hence, we dumped the idea of driving and decided to book a flight instead. That way, we could just fly in and out of Srinagar and rent bikes from Faisal for traveling locally. We will be able to dedicate all 9 days to exploring as much as possible.

Now all this was happening several months in advance. Our trip was finalized for late August and we booked our tickets in early May, about 4 months before the travel dates.

Then in early June, It just so happened that I was talking to another close friend of mine, Lavish, on a different topic when the idea of asking him about coming along occurred.

Shoaib, Lavish, and I had been on several trips together before and I was actually surprised that I did not ask him sooner. When I mentioned the plan to Lavish, he too agreed. After about half an hour of getting his leaves approved, his flight ticket too was booked.

The only difference was that Shoaib and I were both in Delhi. Lavish however would have to first travel from Dehradun to Delhi and then fly to Srinagar.

After numerous discussions and taking inputs from Faisal (and after multiple changes), the following itinerary was decided. This however was just the initial plan. I was certain that the actual travel will turn out to be completely different.

  • Arrive in Srinagar and head straight to Gulmarg – Day 1
  • Travel from Gulmarg to Doodhpathri and reach Srinagar by evening – Day 2
  • Srinagar local sightseeing – Day 3
  • Srinagar to Pahalgam – Day 4
  • Pahalgam to Aharbal and Srinagar by evening – Day 5
  • Srinagar to Gurez – Day 6
  • Gurez to Sonamarg – Day 7
  • Sonamarg to Srinagar – Day 8
  • Fly Out of Srinagar – Day 9

I wanted to rent motorcycles for the entire duration of the trip. But Faisal had prior bookings he had to keep up with.

So for the first 2 days, it was decided that we would rent a cab and then take the handover of motorcycles from Faisal on Day 3. The driver would pick us up from the airport and take us to Gulmarg.

After this, it was pretty much just the wait for D-Day to arrive and getting the travel plan ready. We literally counted the days to the day of the trip and all 3 of us were quite excited.

Final Itinerary

I kept changing the itinerary multiple times trying to find the best way to explore the best that I could. Faisal of course was my primary source of information. I really thank the guy for being so patient with my wild amount of questions.

Mentioned below is how we finally ended up traveling. You can also click on the links to read about our journey on that particular day.

Kashmir Travelogue – Conclusion

All three of us knew that this was going to be an amazing experience. The last time I was so excited about a trip was when I first visited Ladakh. And we weren’t wrong. It indeed turned out to be a grand journey; one that was going to be etched in our memories for a long time.

Hazratbal Mosque : The silvery white Hazratbal Mosque is revered for housing a relic, the Prophet’s hair. Situated near Dal Lake, the only domed mosque in Srinagar is a place of serenity. Women are allowed only till the first part of the mosque.

Avantipur Temple : The famous Avantipur Temple was founded by king Avantivarman who reigned from AD 855-883. Over the years, the temple has been reduced to ruins but it is still a popular site for the devout.

Kolahoi Glacier : The only way to reach Kolahoi Glacier is through an arduous trek which is not for the fainthearted. At 18,000 feet, the breathtaking views definitely make the journey worth the effort. The glacier during summers is the source of the Lidder River and some of its tributaries also make it to the Sindh River.

Gadsar Lake : Situated in the Himalayan mountain range, Gadsar Lake is a high altitude lake that is known for its stunning natural beauty.  The site serves as a popular trekking base and trout fishing centre.

The ultimate travel guide to Kashmir

Sudha Maheshwari - Wordswork

Amir Khusro rightly said, “Gar Bar-ru-e-ZaminAst; HaminAst, HaminAstHaminAst” (If there is heaven on the earth, it is here, it is here) describing the endless beauty of Kashmir.

It's not just a place you visit, but an emotion you experience – with its forever soothing background score of gushing water, breathtaking meadows, aroma of pine trees and vibrancy of saffron engulfing it.

Kashmir is a visual poetry

When it comes to visiting a majestic place such as Kashmir, little planning goes a long way, after all you don’t want to miss out on all the experiences that it has to offer.

So here’s the ultimate travel guide, complete with tips and recommendations, to ensure that you have the most wonderful vacation in Kashmir!

But before we begin, here are a few things to remember:

• Kashmir is the winter wonderland of India, make sure you carry your woollens (even if you’re visiting in May, you’d be surprised how pleasant and rather chilly even the summers are, up there). Woollen socks and warm, waterproof gloves will be your best friends in the cold winters of Kashmir. Also, don’t forget to carry your trustworthy sports shoes if you plan on indulging in any snowy escapades.

Kashmir

• While pharmacies are available everywhere, remember to pack all your SOS medicines! The last thing you’d want is to be stuck with a sore throat on a vacation.

• Pro tip: ensure that the accommodation you book has a thermostat, so that your stay there is cozy and comfortable.

• One last thing that you absolutely must know is that only postpaid connections work in the valley. So be sure to make all the requisite arrangements for uninterrupted connectivity.

Best time to visit

Every season in Kashmir has its own charm.

You can select the time to visit based on the experiences you wish to get out of Kashmir. If you wish to see snowfall and have a high tolerance for low temperatures, December through February is the ideal time for you.

Spring is believed to be the most beautiful season to see Kashmir in. Kashmir blooms with beauty beyond belief during the months from April to June, during which even the weather Gods are kind and the temperature is pleasant and enjoyable. April is also a great month if you wish to see blooming tulips all over the valley.

If you wish to see the Apple orchards in full bloom, the month of September is perfect for a visit. From October-March, Kashmir transforms itself into a winter paradise with the Dal lake, freezing in subzero temperatures to become a magnificent cricket pitch.

How to get there and how to get around?

The Srinagar domestic airport (Sheikh-ul-Alam Airport) is well connected to all major cities in India. There is no railway connectivity in Srinagar, but it is 290 kilometres away from Jammu which is well connected to the Indian Railways network.

To travel within Kashmir, you could take the JKSRTC deluxe buses from Srinagar, though luxury coaches and tourist taxis are easily available for local sightseeing as well as trips and excursions out of Srinagar. If you are a little tight on budget, mini buses and auto rickshaws are the ideal choice for commuting.

Places to visit in Kashmir

The capital of J&K, Srinagar is perhaps the most modern city of Kashmir. Where it does boast of many entertainment amenities like theatres and malls, it does manage to preserve its rustic charm.

When in Srinagar do plan a day or night stay on a houseboat. The experience of staying on Dal Lake is a unique and beautiful one, that you simply cannot skip out on. The boat stays anchored on the lake and you get to soak in some gorgeous views of the mountains surrounding you. .

travel ke kashmir

For the adventure seekers, Astanmarg, which is located right on the outskirts of Srinagar, offers a great camping and picnic experience.

When it comes to gardens, Srinagar has quite literally knocked it out of the park with Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh, Chashm-e-Shahi, Naseem Bagh and Chinar Bagh which blanket the city with their refreshing greenery.

When here, do experience the spiritual serenity of the Shankaracharya temple and the Hazratbal Mosque while you are out exploring the city.

‘Gulmarg’ literally translates to the ‘meadow of flowers’ and is rightly named so with its breathtaking views. This small town tucked in beautiful green meadows is a sight to behold during spring time. But the best time to visit it is during the winters, when the land is covered in an ocean of fluffy snow!

travel ke kashmir

You can take a bus or a cab to Gulmarg from Srinagar. But it is advised not to take your private vehicles, since roads to Gulmarg tend to be a little risky in winters. The two biggest attractions that Gulmarg has to offer are the Gondola ride and trekking. A short and fun trek to Alpather lake from Gondola Phase 2 station is an excellent option for those who are up for the challenge of trekking in the cold.

Gulmarg Golf Course with its asymmetrical contours is counted amongst the largest 18-hole golf courses in the country and is one of the most popular golfing destinations in India.

A quick bus ride is all it takes to get to this golden meadow. The biggest attraction of Sonmarg is the Thajjwas glacier, where you can indulge in activities like sledding and trekking!

travel ke kashmir

Zojila Pass and Zero Points are high altitude spots in Sonmarg which offer mesmerising scenic views. If you want to trek further up, you can check out Table Top in Sonmarg which offers a view of the entire valley.

A word of caution for travellers visiting Sonmarg during the winter months- this area tends to shut down for tourists due to heavy snowfall and high likelihood of avalanches. We highly recommend checking with the locals before booking your trip here.

The picturesque beauty of Pahalgam has been a silver screen favourite since the inception of Indian cinema aka Bollywood!. With the backdrop of deodar and pine trees and several valleys, you will certainly feel like the main character of your own story.

Pahalgam provides an ideal setting for an array of adventure sports like hiking, trekking, and fishing and is also a starting point of the Amarnath yatra.

travel ke kashmir

The town is famous for its scenic beauty and is the jewel of the stunning Liddar valley.

Baisaran, famously known as "Mini Switzerland '' is a short pony ride away from Pahalgam. It makes for an excellent picnic spot and has multiple food stalls and tapris to enjoy with your vacation gang.

Things to eat

Kashmiri cuisine is characterised by its soothing yet zesty flavours that stay with you long after you’ve devoured the dishes prepared for you.

‘Wazwan’ is a multi-course meal. It is a staple of Kashmiri culture and identity. Most dishes in Wazwan are meat-based and use lamb or chicken. Rogan josh is the signature dish of a Wazwan. This spicy red lamb-based curry is ideally eaten with saffron rice.

For yet another gastronomic adventure, you can try Yakhni. Yakhni refers to the stock or broth of beef, chicken, lamb or mutton. It is touted for its health benefits and is often the base for many foods including pulao and other shorbas (soups). Yakhni is usually prepared with a curd based gravy which renders the delicious creamy texture to it.

travel ke kashmir

Whilst in Kashmir don’t forget to sip on the locally prepared Kahwa or Kashmiri chai. This water based hot drink prepared with a generous helping of saffron and dry fruits is known for its digestive properties. With its warm and soothing taste, Kahwa makes the perfect accompaniment to enjoy the ambience and the weather of Kashmir.

Things to shop

Kashmir is famed for its legendary handlooms and handicrafts! The shawls and the textiles made here, speak volumes of the land’s rich cultural past. In fact, the art of making these masterpieces is passed down generationally and the product is considered family-heirlooms by those who buy them.

Kashmir is also where a large amount of India's grapes and apples are produced. So you’re likely to find local street vendors selling the freshest fruits you’ve ever bitten into, at every corner, here!

You can also get dry fruits such as almonds, walnuts, cashews and pine nuts as gifts for your friends and family back home (no jokes, they are for nearly half the price than what you get them in Delhi for)!

That’s it, on your Kashmiri travel guide!

What are you waiting for? Gather your vacation buddies around, show them this travel guide, start drawing up your itinerary and book the flights for your next vacation. Happy journey!
