See how much you have to pay to get dollars, and as the rupee and dollar pretty much follow eachother, why bother?

Not aware of. Still the no. 2 or 3 most popular payment method for tourists there, after no. 1 which is debit card ATM. Less chances for fraud than with most other payment methods so most likely it will stay like this for some time...

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Thanks Eric, probably just media scare mongering.

I always take TCs there. I invariably have trouble with ATMs refusing my card and with TCs you can always change them into cash. Best done at the banks which are all over and they all change TC's (usually very slowly but it gives you a cool 30 minutes to sit down.) The banks in Arrivals are very quick and give excellent rates too. I take sterling TCs but Dollars or most currencies are OK.

Alleged car break-in and passport theft at NW Harris Co. park strands couple: 'We can't travel'

Luke Jones Image

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A couple visiting from Sri Lanka cannot leave the country after their passports were stolen at a northwest Harris County park.

Thusitha Wickramarachichi said his parents were visiting him and his 16-month-old daughter.

"They were excited, and then we were planning some cruises and all that," he said.

But all their plans were halted on Saturday. He said his parents were watching him play cricket at Matzke Park near Jones and Grant roads when a thief broke into his truck and stole a purse containing their passports.

"I usually do, but that day, I did not check with them to see if they had their passports in their bags," Wickramarachichi said.

Surveillance cameras on the car parked next to his truck captured the theft, and the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the footage could be useful in tracking down the thief.

The video shows a man in orange sneakers and an orange shirt exiting the backseat of a black car. He crouches down as he makes his way to the truck and then appears to use some tool to make a hole in the window.

"It took only five seconds," Wickramarachichi said.

A witness provided ABC13 surveillance video footage showing a person accused of breaking into a vehicle and taking passports in a bag at Matzke Park on June 1, 2024.

Without passports, his parents are unable to leave the country. He said they're waiting on documents from Sri Lanka to begin applying for new passports, which he said would take four months.

"Now we can't do cruises, we can't travel, none of that," he said.

They also won't be able to make their July flight home.

Anyone who recognizes the man in the video is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

A witness provided ABC13 surveillance video footage showing a sedan connected to the break-in of a vehicle and theft of passports at Matzke Park on June 1, 2024.

And just to add, not many UK banks even issue them these days..

Yes I thought so and a shame, because it it the most cost efficient and safest way of taking money abroad, but I suppose everyone wants their cut.

If you choose the correct card/bank and take the correct precautions then ATM/Credit cards are safe, efficient and fast.

New York, new challenges as Sri Lanka begin a long road

P uff of dust. Not on the pitch but on the outfield. That's the first thing you notice about cricket at the Nassau County International Cricket Ground just outside New York City. The next thing you see is that the ball plugs in it. It doesn't zip off like we are used to seeing in pretty standard conditions in cricket on TV these days. It is a sandy outfield where fielders won't be queuing up to dive.

Then there is the drop-in pitch. In the warm-up game between India and Bangladesh held two days before the ground hosts its first World Cup match, the ball seamed around and also sat in the surface. Yet again, these are anything but standard conditions. And because of reasons not explained to the South Africa and Sri Lanka teams, they go into the match without any training session at the actual venue.

This is precisely why South Africa requested for at least a fielding session on the actual outfield after they were done with their nets at the Cantiague Park, another facility outside New York City. Even during the India-Bangladesh match, their coach Rob Walter and bowling coach Eric Simons made it a point to come to the venue and check the conditions out.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will visit the venue for the first time when they come in for the match. They even cancelled their nets session at the Cantiague Park. They have decided what they saw of the warm-up game on the TV is all they need to know. That is not as dramatic as it sounds because conditions are a little similar to Sri Lanka: sticky pitch, heavy outfield. That is what they have seen in their other practice sessions as well.

"First of all, we prepared really well," Sri Lanka's captain Wanindu Hasaranga said. "We came two weeks early to North Carolina, and we had practice sessions there. And we played two practice matches in Florida. And I think as a team, we prepared really well. And conditions are similar to Sri Lanka. So, I think as a team we have prepared really well."

You can detect some sulkiness with Sri Lanka, though. Firstly, their flight into New York was delayed by seven hours. Then, unlike India and South Africa, they are staying in downtown Brooklyn, which makes it quite a trek to the ground. Their hotel's swimming pool is closed for the rest of the year, a repeat for them from the 2019 World Cup in England . In fact when asked about adjusting to early-morning starts this World Cup - to cater to the TV audience in India - Hasaranga didn't omit to mention the travel to the ground.

"No, if we played under lights, then we have to prepare, with the field and everything under the lights," Hasaranga said when asked if they needed to make adjustments to early starts. "Then the only concern is we have to come early to the ground. We have to come at 7.30 in the morning because we are so far from the ground. It will take like one-and-a-half hours to the ground. That's the only concern we have."

Hasaranga is not incorrect. During the warm-up match, almost everyone had trouble getting to the ground with the police closing down the entrances to Eisenhower Park, which houses the stadium. Everyone is hopeful there is better co-ordination between the police and the ICC come match day when the roads will be closed at 7.30am for everyone except the team buses.

And then there is the frequent travel for them. Along with Netherlands, Sri Lanka are one of the only two teams that will play all their four first-round matches in four different venues. So they will be in a loop of match-travel-train-optional train-match through then first round.

We can sometimes not appreciate the small little challenges that can accumulate with these daily things. For example, when you are asked to train at another venue a day before the match, this is what happens: you load the cricket kits in the hotel at the team bus, then you unload them at the training facility, then you load again and go to your hotel, then you unload in the morning at the ground and load again because you have to travel immediately and don't have the luxury of playing another match at the same venue.

South Africa were more philosophical with the logistical challenges that are part of coming to a new country, which on top of that is not used to hosting cricket, but they do get to play three matches in New York. Even they were bemused they had to train elsewhere. They didn't know a reason why. Asked if they would have rather they trained at the venue of the match, their captain Aiden Markram said: "It's hard to say because I'm not sure what [training facility] is there [at the venue of the match], because I haven't been there. This facility is incredible to be honest, so we don't mind training here either."

Sri Lanka players criticise their T20 WC schedule citing lengthy travel time

Sri Lanka captain Wanindu Hasaranga and spinner Maheesh Theekshana have lambasted the scheduling of their team’s matches in the ongoing T20 World Cup, saying the roster is “unfair” and has already forced them to cancel one practice due to the long travel time.

Sri Lanka lost their group D opener to South Africa and Theekshana spoke out on the scheduling which he believes has negatively impacted the team.

“So unfair for us, we have to leave every day (after the match) because we are playing (at) four different venues,” Theekshana said.

“The flight we took from Florida, from Miami, we had to wait like eight hours in the airport to get the flight. We were supposed to leave at 8pm but we got the flight at 5am. It’s really unfair for us, but it doesn’t matter when you play,” he added.

South Africa, on the other hand, will be playing two more games here while India, who will start against Ireland on Wednesday, will also play three matches in the city before their last group match in Florida.

“...Even from the hotel, it (the practice venue) is one hour and 40 minutes. Even today (for the match against South Africa), we had to wake up around 5am to come here,” Theekshana pointed out.

And that’s why the island nation was forced to cancel a training session ahead of the South Africa match.

“Yeah, that’s why,” Theekshana said.

Theekshana refused to take names but did mention that a few teams “have got the opportunity to stay in the same place but their hotel is only 14 minutes to the ground.”

does anyone know the current position on cashing traveller cheques please

' class=

Apparently from previous posts on this subject it's very difficult. Travellers cheques are roughly contemporary with the dinosaur. They are a costly and inconvenient means of carrying money abroad in the 21st century when compared with other methods available.

The Great Place to Work For All Global Summit 2024 themed ‘Change Happens Here’, held in May in New Orleans, successfully convened over 1,600 attendees, including leaders from more than 500 companies, all dedicated to fostering Great Workplace culture. Through interactive brain dates and live podcasts along with engaging keynote and focus sessions, participants gained actionable strategies to enhance employee engagement and inclusivity. The event reinforced the importance of building dynamic and resilient organizations, setting a new standard for workplace excellence. Leading from this, Great Place to Work Sri Lanka will be hosting the Great Place to Work FOR ALL Regional Conference 2024, themed “The Future of Work Is ‘FOR ALL’.” This event, where Purpose, People, and Culture converge to shape the future of work, is scheduled for September 2024. The conference aims to educate and inspire leaders, HR professionals, diversity and inclusion practitioners, and anyone committed to fostering inclusive, high-performing workplaces.

With today’s rapidly evolving landscape, organizations are redefining what it means to create inclusive, thriving environments that empower every individual. As such, this  conference serves as a nexus for thought leaders, change-makers, and visionaries to explore innovative strategies, share insights, and collaborate on building workplaces that work for everyone. “The Conference Theme, “The Future of Work Is ‘FOR ALL’ - Purpose | People | Culture”, encapsulates the essence of our mission: to champion workplaces where every person - regardless of background, identity, or role - can thrive. The Future of Work Is FOR ALL signifies a commitment to fostering purpose-driven environments that prioritize people and nurture inclusive cultures. At our conference, we will delve deep into the strategies, practices, and principles that drive this vision forward,” stated Kshanika Ratnayaka, Director/CEO of Great Place to Work Sri Lanka. The event will feature a comprehensive agenda designed to address key aspects of modern workplace dynamics. Highlights include exploring how purpose-driven leadership inspires and motivates teams, fosters innovation, and drives sustainable growth. One of the standout opportunities is hearing from a lineup of inspirational speakers about creating inclusive policies, fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion, and empowering employees to reach their full potential.  These leaders are at the forefront of driving positive change in their workplaces and communities, sharing their experiences, insights, and innovative approaches.  Their stories and strategies will provide attendees with fresh perspectives and practical tools to implement in their own organizations. Additionally, the conference will present best practices for building and sustaining inclusive cultures that celebrate diversity, promote belonging, and drive organizational success. Participants will also gain insights into emerging trends, technologies, and practices shaping the future of work, and how organizations can adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing landscape. By engaging in these conversations, attendees can explore innovative solutions to common challenges, gain deeper understanding of emerging trends, and contribute to shaping a future where work environments are truly inclusive and empowering for all.

Sri Lanka Tourism Hosts Travel Agents for Buddhist Pilgrim Tours and Buddhist Influencers for Vesak 2024

June, 5, 2024 -->

In a bid to boost pilgrim tourism, Sri Lanka Tourism invited prominent outbound travel agents and ten leading Buddhist media influencers from India to participate in an exclusive B2B networking session and immersive cultural experience during the Vesak celebrations. The event commenced on the 22 nd of May 2024 at the Hotel Ramada Colombo, aiming to strengthen ties between local and international travel agents and to showcase the spiritual and cultural richness of Sri Lanka.

The delegation's visit kicks off with a comprehensive networking session designed to foster collaboration and enhance the network between Sri Lankan travel agencies and their counterparts. This initiative is a strategic move to promote pilgrim tours, highlighting Sri Lanka as a premier destination for Buddhist travelers.

On May 23 rd , the delegation participated at the revered lighting ceremony at the iconic Gangaramaya Temple. This event was a cornerstone of the Vesak celebration, offering a profound insight into Sri Lanka's spiritual heritage and cultural traditions. The lighting ceremony is a visually stunning and spiritually uplifting event that symbolizes enlightenment and peace, providing the guests with a firsthand experience of the island's vibrant Vesak festivities.

Following the Vesak celebration, the delegation embarked on a Familiarization Tour starting from May 24 th . This tour covered the significant Buddhist temples across the country, allowing the guests to explore and appreciate the historical and spiritual significance of these sacred sites. Key stops on the tour included the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, the ancient city of Anuradhapura, and the Dambulla Cave Temple.

The primary objective of this program is to showcase Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage and spiritual ambiance, thereby encouraging an increase in pilgrim tour arrivals. By providing an immersive experience of the Vesak celebration and the country's revered Buddhist sites, Sri Lanka Tourism aims to highlight the unique offerings that make the island a must-visit destination for Buddhist pilgrims.

Sri Lanka Tourism believes that this initiative will not only enhance the visibility of Sri Lanka's cultural and spiritual treasures but also foster stronger business relationships and collaborative opportunities between travel agents from both countries. The collaboration is expected to result in a significant boost in tourist arrivals, contributing to the growth and development of the country's tourism sector.

Sri Lanka stands ready to welcome international visitors, showcasing its timeless traditions and unparalleled hospitality. This initiative marks a significant step towards positioning Sri Lanka as a leading destination for Buddhist pilgrimage and cultural tourism.
