Great British Bucket List

The Best Sussex Vineyard Tours

The best sussex vineyard tours will have you sipping english sparkling wine in the south downs and sampling fine whites by the south coast..

Vineyard at sunset

England’s wine scene has surprised a lot of people. 100 years ago, who would have expected our sparkling wines to be out performing classic champagne brands at wine awards around the world? While England’s wine heritage may not have the same reputation as our friends across the channel, the conditions and landscapes in Britain are becoming more and more suited to wine production.

As Europe heats up, the south of England has become a desirable region to plant vineyards, with dry, warm summers and cool winters – perfect for growing grapes.

Pouring English sparkling wine

The majority of English wine is white or sparkling, but there are a few bottles of rose and red in production too. Today, there more than 700 different vineyards scattered across Great Britain, ranging from tiny producers to large-scale operations.

Why is Sussex such a great place for wine production? Well, the vineyards in this part of England have similar soil types and climate conditions as the best vineyards in the world. The moderate climate gives the grapes time to ripen slowly, increasing their ripeness, complexity and acidity. On an ideal year, the vines will avoid frost in April and enjoy a warm September, plumping them up before harvest in September or October.

Grapes on a vine

The chalk and sandy soil in the region is also similar to that found in the Champagne region of France.

In 2018, Ridgeview winery in Sussex won the title of Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition. That’s not all, there are several others close by with excellent reputations.

One of the best ways to get to know the region’s impressive wine selection is by tasting it on site.

All of these Sussex vineyard tours give you the opportunity to see how the process works, from grapevine to bottle. Plus, the best bit? You get to drink some too!

The Best Sussex Vineyards

Depending on where you’re travelling from, I’ve separated the vineyards into their locations in East and West Sussex. If you can’t plan a trip right away, or want to give the trip as a present, you could buy a gift voucher via the websites below.

East Sussex Vineyard Tours

Rathfinny wine estate.

Rathfinny Wine Estate was established in 2010 near Alfriston in the beautiful South Downs. The vineyard is located on south-facing slopes, benefiting from warmth, sea air and excellent chalky soil. It’s as though Sussex has a microclimate designed for growing grapes for wine production!

Rathfinny Wine Estate is one of the largest vineyards in the UK, and just ten years into its lifespan, is already producing award-winning English sparkling wines.

It has its sights set on an ambitious task too – to expand to approximately 350 acres of vines, producing almost eighty thousand cases of Sussex Sparkling wine per year.

Wine tasting tour at Rathfinny Wine Estate

The vineyard is open for tours and tastings at various times throughout the year.  Of all the Sussex vineyard tours, this one is amazing for learning about how sparkling wine is produced and what makes it special.

After a wander through the vines, hearing from a knowledgeable guide all about the process, it’s time to head to the tasting room for a few samples.

Terrace at Rathfinny Wine Estate

It’s worth noting that Rathfinny Wine Estate also has a top restaurant (the Rathfinny restaurant menu looks incredible!) plus smart accommodation on a B&B basis.

Address: Rathfinny Wine Estate, Alfriston, East Sussex, BN26 5TU.

Bluebell Vineyard Estates

Bluebell Vineyard Estates lies in a contrasting location, close to bluebell strewn woods and on the edge of Winne-The-Pooh’s favourite forest, Ashdown Forest!

The family-run vineyard was established in 2005, and up until last year had focused on producing top class English sparkling wines. In 2019, the vineyard released a new range of still wines. With 100 acres of vines, and a beautiful location too, this is one of the best Sussex vineyard tours.

Bluebell Vineyard, Sussex

There are a few options on offer, including guided vineyard tours with tastings, picnics, special events and self-guided woodland trail walks.

Their Sussex vineyard tours offer a ‘grape to glass’ experience. After seeing the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties growing, there’s a chance to peek inside the winery and production room, before tasting four different wines in the tasting room.

Ridgeview Wine Estate

Located close to the stunning village of Ditchling in East Sussex, this Sussex vineyard has an excellent reputation for its full flavoured sparkling wines. Another lovely site, on the edge of the South Downs, the region benefits from great chalky soil and a moderate climate.

The vines were planted back in 1995, back when wine production in Sussex was a pretty niche activity. And these days? Ridgeview is one of the top producers of English sparkling wine – sold by top brands Laithwaites, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer. It’s also won several awards including Winemaker of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.

There are regular guided tours of Ridgeview Wine Estate, where you can find out more about what it takes to produce an award-winning sparkling wine, what the key characteristics of the wine are, and quiz the staff all about life on a vineyard. Then it’s time for a few samples in the beautiful tasting room overlooking the South Downs.

West Sussex Vineyard Tours

Nyetimber vineyard.

The most famous of all the Sussex vineyards on the list, I’ve seen the Nyetimber wine labels on numerous occasions at restaurants and attractions in the UK. Nyetimber’s estate is located in picturesque West Chiltington, and again enjoys a climate that is perfect for a slow ripening of the grapes.

Nyetimber Vineyards

The wines are produced using traditional methods, including an ageing process during which the wines develop complex flavours.

Nyetimber offer one of the best Sussex vineyard tours. The two-hour tour begins in the White Barn, learning about the history of the wine brand from an experienced guide. Then it’s time for a wander around the pretty estate and vineyards, taking in views over the West Sussex countryside.

Nyetimber English Sparkling Wine

You’ll finish your tour in the 15th Century Medieval Barn for a tasting of Nyetimber’s award-winning sparkling wines, including the gold-medal winning Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage, Rosé Multi-Vintage and Cuvee Chérie Multi-Vintage.

Stopham Vineyard

This spectacular Sussex vineyard is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty in West Sussex and forms part of the South Downs National Park. The vines here benefit from great conditions, including a sandy soil and moderate climate.

At Stopham, they grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois and Bacchus grape varieties as well as producing sparkling wine from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This is top quality wine too… I mean, if it’s on the menu at restaurants such as Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons, it must be!

In terms of tours, you can visit this picturesque West Sussex vineyard most Saturdays from April to October (call and book before you visit). Usually you’ll tour the grounds with one of the winemakers, so you’ll learn lots about production, what makes this area great for the grapes and see all the equipment that’s used too. Then it’s time for a guided tasting of a selection of wines.

Address : Stopham Vineyard, Stopham, Pulborough, West Sussex, RH20 1EE.

Albourne Estate

Just twenty minutes from Brighton lies this beautiful wine estate, overlooking the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park. It’s one of the smaller and newer wineries in Sussex, launching in 2010, and now covering 30 acres.

Albourne Estate, West Sussex vineyard tours

The estate produces several white wines as well as top-quality English sparkling wine. I think a wine tour of Albourne Estate offers a great introduction to wine production in England.

It’s a family-run business, with passionate individuals overseeing all the key processes. On a tour, you’ll have a chance to ask all the questions you could desire and peek into all the areas of the business, from the vines themselves to the bottling and labelling areas.

Once you’ve toured the vineyards and seen the production process, it’s off to the tasting room for a tasting of four of the Albourne Estate’s wines.

Bolney Wine Estate

This is a vineyard with family at its heart. Three generations of the family work at Bolney Wine Estate, heading up different operations. The founders set up camp in 1972, when they planted three acres of vines.

Since then, the estate has gone on to produce premium red, white, rose and English sparkling wines, picking up several awards along the way. One of the most prestigious accolades came in 2017, when the winery took the title of Winery of the Year at the UK Wine Awards.

Bolney Wine Estate (Photo: Chris Orange)

As Sussex wine tours go, the options at Bolney Wine Estate are among the most magical! The vineyard trail is a beautiful route for all the family to explore, charting Bertie the Bolney Bunny’s adventures. Kids will love passing through the vines using the trail map, and there’s a chance to win a prize for finding Bertie too!

Bolney Wine Estate balcony overlooking the vines (Photo: Chris Orange)

For grown-ups, there are several offerings too. The most popular is a casual tour of the vineyards followed by a tasting, but there are more sophisticated options too, including a gourmet dinner with wine pairings. The food looks top-notch, so I know which tour I’d choose!

Address: Bolney Wine Estate, Foxhole Lane, Bolney, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH17 5NB.

Wiston Estate

Wiston Estate is a 6,000-acre estate located in the heart of the South Downs. It’s another vineyard with a huge family history. The land has been in the family since 1743! The vines were planted in 2006, and include classic varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.

Wiston Estate, Sussex

Wiston Estate specialises in production of sparkling wines, so if you’re a fan of bubbly, this is the Sussex wine tour for you!

Wine tours take place from April to October, and begin in the estate’s original 16-acre chalk vineyard, before heading inside to the ancient Wine Barn for a tasting session of English Sparkling wines.

From Easter onwards, we offer a full programme of hospitality to complement our wines. These include cheese platters and picnics. SUSSEX VINEYARD TOUR INFORMATION

Steeped in history and farmed for generations, the Rathfinny Vineyard occupies 600 acres of land, encompassed by the South Downs National Park and the English Channel. Now is a particularly exciting time to enjoy a Sussex Vineyard tour as the provenance of Sussex Sparkling wine has recently been recognised with official legal status – awarded a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) . This is a momentous time in our history as it establishes a gold standard for Sussex wines, in the same vein as other protected products like Champagne, Jersey Royal Potatoes and Cornish clotted cream, well-known for their quality guarantee.

Rathfinny offers incredible experiences that can be enjoyed as a gift in the form of a voucher or booked in advance. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary or you’re taking time to indulge in what you love, Rathfinny Wine Estate is the perfect place to explore at your leisure.

We have an enthusiastic team of tour guides, each with their own style and perspective to bring our story to life. From grape to glass, our tours walk you through the entire winemaking process as we divulge the secrets of producing English Sparkling Wine, including our English Sparkling Rosé, which is experiencing rising popularity. West Sussex Wine Tour

West Sussex Wine Tour

Sussex is fast becoming a highly regarded international wine destination, with wine tourism becoming more and more popular. So (as part of our series of articles about Sussex wines), on this West Sussex wine tour, we take you via the historic towns of Horsham, Petworth, and Pulborough as you discover some of our wonderful West Sussex vineyards.

Historic Horsham has plenty on offer for the first stop of your tour. It has a central market square with a twice-weekly market, a theatre, two cinemas, and a music and comedy venue, as well as some exceptional restaurants like South Lodge, Interlude and The Chequers at Rowhook . For exploring and for local walks, escape to Leechpool and Owlbeech Wood, St. Leonard’s Forest , the Downs Link or Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens . For more cerebral pursuits, head down the historic Causeway to the town’s museum .

horsham

Vineyards and wines

Villa Elena is just south of Horsham and although small, they grow Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Bacchus and Seyval Blanc. They produce just one still wine at the moment, but you can visit the vineyard by arrangement, and they seem to have quite a unique and alternative vibe.

Mannings Heath Golf & Wine Estate is part of the Benguela Collection, which consists of nearby Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens as well as Benguela Cove Wine Estate in South Africa. They have 30 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier and hope to produce their first vintage of estate English sparkling wine in 2023. They also have a new winery planned for 2022. They offer vineyard tours by golf buggy and then wine tastings of Benguela Cove wines, all while overlooking the vines.

Sussex Vineyards

Coolhurst Vineyard. Not far from Mannings Heath and Horsham, this family-run vineyard is fast gaining a reputation for producing one of England’s finest sparkling rosé wines produced from 100% Pinot Noir and named Lady Elizabeth. They also produce an almost unique traditional method vintage rosé demi-sec; thought to be the only one in the UK, also 100% Pinot Noir. They don’t offer tours yet but watch this space.

coolhurst vineyard

House Coren . Very recently planted, House Coren at The Haven just west of Horsham produce an almost unique sparkling wine using the Charmat method, a technique where the wine undergoes secondary fermentation in sealed tanks rather than in the bottle. This vineyard is small but buzzing with energy and a stated intention to be accessible to nervous wine novices who want to visit. They are also in the process of building their own winery so again, watch this space.

Places to stay in Horsham

For top-of-the-range places to stay, South Lodge and Leonardslee just to the east of the town are a must. The Windmill Inn is a 17 th century country pub with lots of period charm, great reviews and at a convenient spot just south of Horsham and not far from the Downs Link.  For something a bit more off the beaten track, you could try the 16 th century country hotel, Random Hall, just outside Slinfold. You can find out more about Horsham here: Visit Horsham

Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens

Stage two of our West Sussex wine tour takes you to Petworth,  a stunning market town that has so much to see and do. It has the fabulous and historic Petworth House and Park (a National Trust property), art galleries, antique shops and markets, monthly farmers markets, a number of heritage sites, and, of course, beautiful architecture. If you’re spending any time in Petworth, you should always take a little time to explore the South Downs or discover nearby Midhurst with its historic ruins, or Chichester just a little further south.

Petworth may not have a theatre, but they do have the oldest street fair in the south of England (in November),  Petworth Festival  (a music and arts extravaganza in the summer), a Literary Week (in October), an Antiques Fair (in May) and its own Petworth Fringe! Good watering holes are also in abundance and include E. Street Bar and Grill in Petworth, Farmer, Butcher, Chef at Goodwood Hotel and The Lickfold Inn near the town.

Petworth

Roebuck Estates. Based in Tillington, just west of Petworth, Roebuck Estates first planted their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier back in 2006 and now have vineyards across Sussex at Blackdown, Lurgashall, Slinfold, Bewl Water Reservoir and just east of Petworth at their Roman villa site. They are also a sustainable wine producer as certified by Sustainable Wines of Great Britain.   Majoring in sparkling wine they are proud recipients of a number of awards and although they don’t offer vineyard tours and tastings, you can buy their wines at the wine merchants in Petworth if you want a fully local experience.

Upperton Vineyard.  First planted in 2005, Upperton, also in Tillington, currently has 6,000 vines producing between 6,000 and 10,000 bottles per year. Again, they grow a mixture of Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir for their sparkling wine and they offer private vineyard tours and wine tasting which culminate on their rather gorgeous terrace with views across the South Downs.

Sussex Vineyards

Blackdown Ridge. North west of Petworth and somewhat off the beaten track, the first vines were planted here in 2010 and these were used to create this vineyard’s first sparkling wine in 2015. Blackdown is already multi award-winning and they have now also planted Bacchus, Triomphe and Sauvignon Blanc for their still wines. They offer tours of their vineyard and winery which end with a tasting session of their still and sparkling wines in this beautiful and very tranquil corner of West Sussex.

Tinwood Estate. A 20-minute drive south west of Petworth, Tinwood Estate first planted their vines in 2007, and have since gained quite a reputation for their sparkling wines which include a rosé. They offer vineyard tours which conclude in their swank and stylish tasting rooms with its glass-covered veranda and fabulous views. They also do afternoon teas.

Sussex Sparkling Wine

Places to stay in Petworth

For this leg of your tour, you could stay at the Tinwood Estate in one of their luxury vineyard lodges, with views over the vines and the setting sun or you could opt for the nearby Goodwood Hotel. Just outside Petworth is the delightful Old Railway Station where you can stay in a beautifully refurbished railway carriage or stay in the town itself in the historic Angel Inn.

The Old Railway Petworth

On the last leg of your West Sussex wine tour, Pulborough is a bit of a must because it has such a cluster of vineyards. In the surrounding area, you also have the West Sussex Golf Club, Pulborough Brooks RSPB nature reserve, Bignor Roman Villa, Parham House and Gardens and of course nearby Arundel with its magnificent castle, cathedral and quirky historic town. If you have time, you should also visit Amberley Museum and have one last ramble along the South Downs .

For fine dining, The Parsons Table in Arundel and Amberley Castle’s restaurant are both outstanding. Or head to The White Hart right next to Stopham Bridge which is a beautiful Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument believed to date back to 1422-3. If it’s entertainment you’re after, try and coincide your visit with one of the events held at Kinsbrook Vineyard. They have live music every Sunday from the spring onwards as well as hosting various other events.

Parham House Sussex

Stopham Vineyard. The first vineyard you come to as you travel from Petworth, Stopham was first planted in 2007 and they produce still and sparkling white wines from their Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Auxerrois, Bacchus, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varieties. They have their own winery in a converted Grade II listed Victorian barn and offer vineyard, winery and wine tasting tours. Their particular claim to fame is having been chosen for the Queen’s party on the Royal Barge at her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Sussex vineyards

Kinsbrook Vineyard. On a sunny day, Kinsbrook has a distinctly French vibe and you can grab a coffee and enjoy it in the vineyard itself. They first planted in 2017 as an extension of the family farm and now have over 45, 000 vines. They have their own Pinot Gris and Bacchus, and a vintage Cuvée made from Hampshire grapes. They offer tastings and tours and have a KIN Bubble in one of the fields where there is an informal café and wine bar as well as a horsebox café. There are also plans afoot for a new farm shop and eatery.

Nutbourne Vineyard. On the edge of the West Sussex Literary Trail , Nutbourne describe themselves as a boutique family vineyard that produces still and sparkling wine. They first planted as long ago as 1979 and have 26 acres under vine, planted with Bacchus, Huxelrebe and Reichensteiner, as well as Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc. They even have the remains of an old windmill! They do vineyards trails, tours, and tastings which include vineyards picnics with seasonal Sussex produce from the farm and kitchens.

Sussex wine

Nyetimber.   One of our Sussex big guns, and right next door to Nutbourne, Nyetimber claim to be able to trace their winemaking heritage back to the Domesday Book. More recently, the current Nyetimber enterprise planted their first Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines in 1988 and have gone on to win lots of awards for their sparkling wine. Throughout the year they have specific open days when you can enjoy a wine tour followed by a tasting in their 15 th century barn.
