WTM London to Reveal Worldwide Trends in Annual WTM Global Report

World Travel Market London 2023 , the world’s most influential travel & tourism event, will reveal the latest trends shaping the industry when it releases its Global Report on the first day of the show on Monday 6th November.

The exclusive WTM Global Travel Report , compiled in association with renowned researchers at Tourism Economics , an Oxford Economics company, shows how leisure travellers’ needs and desires are changing – and shines a spotlight on emerging and growing destinations for 2024 and beyond.

Media will have exclusive access to the report and find out about the key developments highlighted at the WTM press conference and media breakfast at the International Media Centre (N1-500), from 10.00-11.00 on Monday 6th November.

There will also be a session later that day, called ‘ WTM Presents…A Global Travel Report’ which will reveal the full report in detail, followed by a panel discussion WTM Global Travel Report: The Industry Impact in association with Oxford Economics on the Elevate Stage, from 14:15-15:30.

Attendees will gain valuable insights into the shifting landscape of travel and learn about consumer demands, helping them shape their business and plan for the future.

During the panel discussion, industry figureheads from across the sector will share their thoughts about how the trends will affect their plans for marketing, sales, innovation and investment in the coming months and years.

Juliette Losardo , WTM London Exhibition Director, said:

“We’re thrilled to launch the first ever – WTM Global Travel Report – it demonstrates our commitment to ensuring the travel community have the freshest insight into trends shaping the sector and will support discussions, meetings and planning taking place during the three days at WTM.’’

“We partnered with Oxford Economics, a leader in tourism data and economics and the report presents findings from international research, using an expansive databank covering nearly 185 countries worldwide as destinations and as origin markets and all major bilateral tourism flows in terms of visits, nights and spend, as well as unique industry insights, the report gives a comprehensive outlook on tourism.”

“The worldwide outlook and vast, informative findings will give delegates invaluable insights to ensure they stay ahead in the travel sector.” The report will detail how the market has fared in 2023 and forecasts how domestic and international leisure travel will develop in 2024.

It considers the impact of challenges such as inflation and the cost-of-living squeeze – and compares the varying fortunes of different regions and markets.

The WTM Global Travel Report will delve into the drivers of demand in this post-pandemic era, examining how and why travellers are prioritising their holidays above other types of expenditure, and considering the outlook for different demographics.

The authors have also studied issues affecting the travel trade, which has had to deal with crises such as wildfires, strikes and staff shortages while the sector has rebounded.

Losardo, concluded:

“We’ve heard many a positive story over the past few months, from exhibitors and partners, regarding the success of 2023 trading, despite many headwinds. This report will back up the hearsay, with up-to-date data and expert commentary. “As we look to 2024, this report is there to help delegates build their strategies for the year ahead and beyond, armed with a deeper understanding of the forces shaping the future of our sector.”

  • Analyst Opinion

The Travel & Tourism market has been experiencing significant growth worldwide, driven by various factors such as increasing disposable income, ease of travel, and desire for unique experiences. Customer preferences: Travelers are increasingly seeking authentic and unique experiences, moving away from traditional tourist attractions to more off-the-beaten-path destinations. This shift in preferences has led to the rise of experiential travel, where immersive cultural experiences and interactions with locals are highly valued. Trends in the market: In the United States, there has been a noticeable trend towards sustainable and eco-friendly travel practices. Travelers are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact and are actively seeking out destinations and accommodations that prioritize sustainability. This has led to the growth of eco-tourism initiatives and the popularity of destinations known for their conservation efforts. Local special circumstances: In Europe, the rise of budget airlines and the Schengen Area agreement have made travel within the region more affordable and convenient. This has resulted in a significant increase in intra-European tourism, with travelers exploring multiple countries in a single trip. The diverse cultural offerings and close proximity of European countries make it an attractive destination for those seeking a mix of history, art, and culinary experiences. Underlying macroeconomic factors: The Asia-Pacific region has seen a surge in outbound tourism, driven by a growing middle class with higher disposable incomes. Countries like China and India have witnessed a significant increase in international travel, with travelers from these markets exploring destinations beyond their borders. This rise in outbound tourism has also led to an influx of international visitors to Asia-Pacific countries, boosting the tourism industry in the region.

U.S. Remains the World’s Most Powerful Travel & Tourism Market

world travel market que es

London, UK: The World Travel & Tourism Council ( WTTC ) today launched its 2024 Economic Impact Trends Report, which has revealed the U.S. as the world’s most powerful Travel & Tourism market, contributing a record-breaking $2.36 TN to the nation’s economy last year. Despite the slow return of spending from international travellers, the U.S. keeps pole position, with almost double the economic contribution of its nearest rival. Following a record-breaking year for Travel & Tourism, the sector continues to be the backbone to many country economies, while supporting millions of jobs globally. The latest report from the global tourism body reveals China as the world’s second most powerful market with a GDP contribution of US$1.3 TN in 2023, underscoring its impressive rebound, despite the late reopening of its borders. Germany secured the third spot with a US$487.6 BN economic contribution, while Japan, which in 2022 was in 5th place, jumped up to 4th position, contributing US$297 BN. The United Kingdom completes the top five, contributing US$295.2 BN.

France, the world’s most popular destination retained its sixth position with a contribution of US$264.7 BN, followed closely by Mexico at US$261.6 BN, showcasing its continued appeal as a major tourist destination.   India came in eighth, rising from a previous 10th position, with US$231.6 BN, marking a notable improvement and highlighting its growing influence in the sector. Italy and Spain complete the top 10, contributing US$231.3 BN and US$227.9 BN, respectively.

However, over the next decade, WTTC predicts China will become the biggest Travel & Tourism market with India moving up to 4th position.

These shifts illustrate the dynamic nature of the global Travel & Tourism sector, with emerging markets gaining ground and traditional powerhouses maintaining their strongholds.   The report also highlights the countries experiencing the highest annual growth rates in their Travel & Tourism contributions to GDP.   In 2023, China’s sector surged ahead with an astounding year on year growth of 135.8%, while other Asian countries, such as Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, and the Philippines recovered soon after the removal of travel restrictions.   Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: "As we look forward to a record-breaking 2024, it's clear that Travel & Tourism is not only back on track, but also set to achieve unprecedented growth.   “We will continue to prioritise sustainability and inclusivity, ensuring that this growth benefits everyone and protects our planet for future generations. The sector's resilience and potential for innovation continues to drive us forward.”   According to the report, many key destinations will profit from a surge in international spending this year compared to pre-pandemic levels, with Saudi Arabia up 91.3% compared to 2019. Türkiye (+38.2%), Kenya (+33.3%), Colombia (+29.1%) and Egypt (+22.9%) leading the way.   Globally, international visitor spending is set to grow by nearly 16% to reach US$1.9 TN, while domestic tourists are projected to spend more than ever before, reaching US$5.4TN, an increase of 10.3% over 2019 levels.   Travel & Tourism investment grew 13% in 2023 to reach more than US$1TN, with a return to pre-pandemic levels anticipated by 2025.   However, high interest rates around the world could create challenges for future investment. It is therefore crucial that the public and private sectors work together to innovate to ensure the continual strengthening of this vital sector.   The report also highlights the sector's commitment to sustainability, showcasing the decoupling of growth from greenhouse gas emissions and the increasing opportunities for women, young people, and marginalised communities.   Technological advancements, particularly in AI, are expected to further enhance the travel experience and drive future growth.   For more information and to access the full report, please visit WTTC's Research Hub  or go to  Travel & Tourism Economic Impact 2024: Global Trends .
