The epitome of unspoiled Grecian island life

Nestled between Skiathos and Alonissos, the pristine island of Skopelos is a low-key and often overlooked destination in the Sporades archipelago. A pure and authentically Grecian island, it lacks the bustling tourist towns and overcrowded beaches you might expect for a vacation spot in the Aegean Sea. However, this peaceful paradise offers you and your guests a serene stop while you island-hop between Greek hotspots.

The wonderfully charming hub of the island is Skopelos Town, an archaic hillside sprawl of blindingly white houses topped with terracotta tiles. The beautiful natural harbour warmly welcomes new visitors into the Chora’s maze of meandering alleys and narrow streets, but you’ll never be far from a historic church, taverna, or breathtaking view across the Aegean Sea.

North from Skopelos Town is Glossa, the island’s second main town and a gem of authentic Grecian life. This sleepy town is the best place to watch a vibrant, undisturbed sunset framing panoramic views of nearby Skiathos. Head to the small square at the top of the village for the perfect vantage point, and eat a delicious local dinner at a family-run taverna. Fruits like prunes and plums grow all over this flourishing islet and usually end up in local cuisine. Try the mouthwatering ‘pork with plums’, a speciality of Skopelos.

Undoubtedly one of the main attractions on the island is Agios Ioannis Church. Made famous by the movie Mamma Mia! , this church is perched atop an exposed, steep cliff jutting out into the sea. There are 198 steps to reach the top, and you’ll be rewarded with unhindered views of the glittering cove below. Skopelos has no shortage of scenic religious sites, with an excess of 360 scattered across the island. If you’re exploring on foot or by car, you will come across a church, chapel, or monastery seemingly around every turn.

Skopelos’ rugged coastline is dotted with many picturesque beaches backed by lush forests. Panormos Beach is across the island from Skopelos Town and great for a sunset between pine-covered hills. Glysteri Beach is also nearby and reached via an olive tree peppered valley which scents the air. Kastani Beach is a beautiful, but popular location thanks to Mamma Mia! , and is the one beach which can get a little overcrowded.

Some beaches are only accessible by boat and will afford you a little more seclusion on your yacht charter . Head north along the rocky coastline, and you’ll find the most beautiful spots along the way. Beaches like Hovolo and Neraki boast new levels of serenity and will only be occupied by others who have reached them by water. Perivoliou Beach is also worth a visit and can be found hidden away on the northeast coast, surrounded by crystal-clear azure waters.

There are two main marinas on the island, both able to accommodate vessels of a 60m max length. Skopelos Marina can be found in Skopelos Town and is perfectly located for island exploration. The second is Loutraki Marina, found near the village of Glossa.

Departure is at 9.00 am from the  port of Skopelos  to Alonissos and the Marine Park area, and once a week there is an excursion to Skiathos. The return is at 18.00 in the afternoon and the price is € 75 a day per person, with lunch and  drink .

Breakfast includes coffee, tea,  bread  with jam and honey, as well as chocolate  drink , while the meal is a BBQ (steak, sausages, chicken). Guests can  drink wine, ouzo, or raki.

• Sail Boat “Planitis”:

The “Planitis” is a wooden sailboat that makes excursions in the blue waters of the Aegean Sea.

The final destination is Alonissos and the Marine Park area. Departure is at 10.00 am from the  port of Skopelos  and the return is scheduled for 18.00 in the afternoon.

The program includes a visit to the Marine Park, a swim at Agios Dimitrios Beach in Alonissos, a meal on board, and free two hours for a walk-in Alonissos.

• Aegean Paradise Cruise:

The “Gorgona” café organizes excursions to the Marine Park every Sunday and Wednesday. The departure is early in the morning from the  port of Skopelos and the program includes a visit to the Kyra Panagia monastery, a swim at the beach of Agios Dimitrios, and a walk at Patitiri in the Chora of Alonissos.

Prices are 49 euro for adults and 33 euro for children with the price including lunch.

Those who choose this excursion will also enjoy the tales of Captain Paki and relax in a cool atmosphere.

This trip should definitely score higher in the sailing day tours. We liked the boat, very comfortable in comparison with the others, few people in the trip so it was very relaxing. The captain is also a chef, so we had an amazing lunch, he also prepared a wonderful salad. Would highly recommend this boat with Captain George .

Couldn’t of wished for a better day. My wife’s birthday spent at sea with 12 of us enjoying the various bays and coves . Lovely food and perfect hosts that couldn’t do enough for all of us. Highly recommended.

We had a wonderful time on this excursion – nice small group – there were 6 of us The food was delicious, plenty of beverages and the boat was beautiful.

Skiathos: Taking The Mamma Mia Boat Trip with Poseidon

As an unapologetic fan of both Mamma Mia! films, I knew that a boat trip was on the cards when I booked my trip to Skiathos.

Skiathos Town is one of the filming locations for the first film – although it’s a little bit blink-and-you’ll-miss-it . A lot of the film was actually filmed in Pinewood Studios in London.

But there are a few more filming locations over on neighbouring island Skopelos – a mere hour away. Thankfully there are several Mamma Mia! themed boat trips available from Skiathos Town which will take you there.

I choose to go with Poseidon as it’s the only boat from Skiathos which stops at right by Agios Ioannis, the clifftop chapel made famous as the location of Sophie’s wedding at the end of the first film (if you take a different boat you’ll need to get an expensive taxi if you want to walk up to the chapel).

Itineraries may change according to the weather and the schedule, but here’s what we got up to when we set sail for the imaginary island of Kalokairi…

The boat leaves from the Old Port in Skiathos Town. This is actually one of the film locations – it’s where Sam and Harry arrive at the port and miss the ferry to Kalokairi (which is not a real island). Watch the film and you’ll briefly spy the blue-shuttered windows pictured above.

The boat left at 10 and I was advised to board at 9:30am to get a good spot on deck. I recommend going earlier though as there were plenty of people already on board by the time I got there (and this was early in the season so it wasn’t completely full).

FIRST STOP – MAMMA MIA CHURCH

The first stop is the best for Mamma Mia lovers. It took about 1 hour in good weather to reach Agios Ioannis (otherwise known as the Mamma Mia! church) from Skiathos Town.

Of course, the soundtrack is played as soon as you leave the harbour, and it was perfectly timed so that The Winner Takes It All was playing as we rounded the rocky cliff that is home to the Agios Ioannis chapel.

Cheesy but amazing .

Sadly the boat never quite comes alive with music a la Dancing Queen, though a few of us murmur along quite tunelessly.

The boat (pictured below) anchors at the beach next to the chapel. I’d say it was a 10-15 minute steep uphill walk. The path is fairly uneven and there were a few people on our trip who struggled, but most were fine. But it’s worth the effort for the view.

If you don’t want to walk up you can relax on the beach itself, which is beautiful – the water is an incredible shade of blue. There a small snack bar nearby too.

The chapel in real life is pretty tiny! You certainly couldn’t fit a wedding contingent in here.

The interior is very different from the one the film, which was a studio set based on the interior of Panagitsa tou Pirgou church in Skopelos Town. 

SECOND STOP – SKOPELOS TOWN

Next the boat motored along the coast, past Amarantos (where Sophie reads Donna’s diary at the start of the film) and Glysteri (where they jump from the rocks in Our Last Summer) towards Skopelos Town for a lunch stop.

Skopelos Town was a delightful surprise. 

There are no Mamma Mia locations in Skopelos Town itself.  But it doesn’t matter because I can tell you – Skopelos Town has vibes .

It’s a gorgeous harbour with very chilled (if slightly chi-chi) atmosphere. I spied a brewery that plays jazz, immaculate streets with pretty coloured balconies, great shopping, homemade ice-cream, and a juice bar. Is this where the hipsters come in the summer?

I had a large plate of tomatokeftedes with a red pepper and cheese dip and a Fix whilst watching the ferries and plotting a return trip.

In fact, I almost did a Sophie and stayed.

THIRD STOP – BEACH

The third stop included on the tour depends on the day and also the weather.

The main Mamma Mia beach on Skopelos is Kastani. This is the where Lay All Your Love On Me and Does Your Mother Know were filmed. The jetty and beach bar no longer exist but you can still do your best Amanda Seyfried and writhe around on the beach in your swimsuit. Just be aware that the beach is pebbly rather than sandy.

We stopped at Milia, which is the next beach along the coast. It’s equally beautiful with incredible colours (particularly when the sun shines, or so I’m told as it was unfortunately forecast by the time we got there).

The beach itself at Milia wasn’t used as a location – possibly some shots were filmed between Milia and the nearby Dhasia islet but I’ve not managed to confirm this. I may be grasping at straws.

Whilst writing up this post I came across these amazing behind-the-scenes photos of filming on Skopelos which give you a great idea of how the scenery is used.

And that wrapped up the boat tour, and we headed back to Skiathos Town in time for a sundowner at Bourtzi.

All in all, it’s an enjoyable and relaxing day- as long as you don’t have expectations of visiting all the locations or of everything looking the same as in the film. I can also imagine it’s considerably less relaxing in July and August when the boats are completely packed. 

The locations are all worth a visit in their own right, and non-Mamma Mia! lovers will be pleased to note that the soundtrack is only played once. The poor staff must be completely sick of it.

Fans should note that throughout the summer there’s also frequent showings of the first film at the open-air cinema on the Bourtzi.

Thankfully this is where the cheese ends. The only other reference I saw to the films was an ice-cream parlour named after the film, and a few places called Sophie’s Apartments (or similar).

Yacht cruise to Skopelos island

General description.

This yacht tour starts at 10:00 am and takes place on a wonderful 44-feet, 10-berth catamaran. You will have the chance to spend an entire day swimming in the Aegean sea and exploring new, fantastic places. We depart from the new port of Skiathos Town having the neighboring island of Skopelos as our destination. It is highly likely that we see dolphins on the way! Our first stop is the tiny and uninhabited islet of Desa, where we stop for a short swim into a beautiful cave.

Next stop is the beautiful bay of Panormos in Skopelos island, where the captain will go hunting for a local variety of oyster to eat. We will have plenty of time for snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing there. Afterwards, we head to Elias beach, a fantastic place only accessible by boat. Most times we have this beach all to ourselves.

At lunch time we dock at the small port of Elios in Skopelos, where there are great taverns to taste local dishes (meal not included in price). Alternatively you can stay and have a picnic on board (water and free wine offered), or relax at the two close beaches. Around 3 o'clock we depart for our trip back to Skiathos, stopping at either Arkos island or Tsougria island for another swim or relaxing time. We return in Skiathos at 17:30 pm .
