Do you feel your cruise photos are boring? Uninspired? If you are looking for ways to improve your photo-taking on your cruises, we have some cruise photo ideas for you!

Cruise photography is a lot of fun for me. As a result, I have taken thousands and thousands of photos on cruise ships. To make it simpler to give you ideas, I will focus on photo-taking onboard the ship only, not excursions. Along the way, I will include a few photos from our cruises to show you what I mean.

Good Cruise Photos

Everyone takes many of the same photos of certain things on cruise ships; it’s just what we do. When we are new to cruising, we get onboard, all excited, and pull out our phones or cameras to snap quick photos of everything in sight. Half of them end up in the virtual trashcan, but some are definitely worth keeping.

Here are some of the most common cruise photos that I see on social media, a good start to creating memories of your cruise through photographs.

• A ship’s life preserver
• Your feet as you sit in a lounge chair, facing the ocean
• The view from your balcony
• You holding a cocktail at every bar on the ship
• Sailaway selfie
• Titanic pose
• Dressed up for formal night
• Towel animals
• Sitting by the pool, cocktail in hand
• Your dinner/lunch/breakfast plate
• Posing with the captain
• Photo of the pilot boat
• Sunrise/sunset/moon over the ocean
• Suitcases left in the hallway on the last night
• Standing at the railing on deck, looking at the ocean
• Photo of the ship while docked
• Sitting in a hot tub, sipping a frozen drink
• On the pier with the ship in the background
• The wake of the ship

Better Cruise Photos

If you want to up your game a little, you will have to get a little more creative. Try to tell a story with your photos, or take interest in small details. Wait for a good moment.

Here are some better cruise photo ideas:

• Photos of details of your cabin or architectural details on the ship such as grand atriums
• Photos taken from above or at an extreme angle of your meal
• Photo of the ship taken from a tender boat
• Selfie with your new port in the background
• Selfie with a performer in costume after a performance
• Selfie while sweaty and red-faced from having fun
• The view framed by a porthole
• A view of your port, taken from above on your balcony
• A selfie in the mirror while getting your hair done at the spa
• A shot of the length of a buffet station, taken from an angle in Portrait mode on an iPhone
• A shot of a crew member posing for you
• You with your favorite waiter, bartender, stateroom attendant or other crew member, being silly
• Photos with you and your new friends you met onboard
• Take a pic of somewhere dramatic on the ship at night
• When you have an overnight in port, take a pic of the ship from the pier at night

Action Cruise Photos

Capture a moment, a memory, on your cruise while doing or watching something fun. Find an activity on the deck and give it a try, and have your partner take photos. Then switch!

• Lining up a putt on the mini-golf course
• Climbing a rock wall
• Navigating an obstacle course
• Crew members in action
• Crew-versus-passengers pool volleyball game
• The water stirred by the ship’s azipods
• Cavorting under falling water in the kids’ splash zone
• Try to get a photo of a whale or porpoises
• Yourself or someone else going down a water slide

Artistic Cruise Photos

Artistic photos take more time, sometimes a little setup, and a bit of imagination. You have to think outside the box. Try some of these cruise photo ideas:

• Looking out a porthole window, taken from behind
• Breakfast on the balcony with the sunrise in the background
• Pretending to hold up the setting sun, taken from behind
• Toasting with champagne, hands only, in front of a sunset
• Look up and take photos of details
• A lineup of colorful beach chairs on deck
• The atrium ceiling, taken while centered below
• Get up before dawn and take photos while the ship is entering port
• A pensive photo of your partner, taking in the scenery from your balcony or the deck
• A tableau photo while dining
• Tell a story with your photo

Brand-Specific Photos

Some photos can only be taken on certain cruise lines’ ships. For instance, a selfie with the funnel on Carnival. Since we primarily cruise on Celebrity Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line and they are what I know best, here are some brand-specific cruise photo ideas to try when sailing with them.

Celebrity Cruise Photos

Celebrity Cruises is known for its extensive art collection, scattered throughout its fleet, and its entertaining Martini Bar. Consider taking pics such as:

• Posing in front of the iconic statue on the pool deck
• At Eden, a photo of the chef while plating
• The bartenders’ show at the Martini Bar, especially tossing bottles and shakers
• Posing with fun ship art
• Take a selfie with the X on the smokestack in the background
• Have a picnic on the Lawn Club and take selfies
• Have someone take a photo of you in one of the fun, wacky chairs aboard
• Have someone take a photo of you in one of the hammocks in the solarium

NCL Cruise Photos

Norwegian Cruise Line is known for its massive atrium chandeliers, its theme parties, and its topside activities loved by kids and adults alike. Take photos that tell the viewer without words exactly where you are, such as:

• Silent disco photos
• Atrium chandeliers
• Atrium staircases
• Zipping around the track in a go-kart
• Pose on the atrium staircase on formal night
• Bowling a game in the bowling alley

Tips For Taking Better Photos Onboard

If you love taking photos, you probably want to get better at it. I know I do. Here are some general suggestions for getting better photos on your cruises.

Golden Hour Magic : Make the most of the soft, warm light during the “golden hour,” which occurs shortly after sunrise and before sunset. This light can add a touch of magic to your photos, especially when capturing outdoor scenes or portraits.

Rule of Thirds : Divide your photo into a grid of nine equal sections (like a tic-tac-toe board) by imagining two horizontal and two vertical lines. Position key elements along these lines or at their intersections to create a visually pleasing composition.

Foreground Interest : Incorporate interesting foreground elements to add depth and dimension to your shots. This could be a railing, a glass of a beverage, or even a decorative feature on the ship.

Leading Lines : Use natural lines on the ship’s deck, railings, or architecture to guide the viewer’s eye through the photo. These lines can create a sense of movement and draw attention to focal points.

Candid Moments : Capture genuine moments of joy and interaction among guests and crew members. Candid shots can showcase the authentic experiences that guests have on the cruise.

Reflections : Take advantage of reflective surfaces like glass windows, mirrors, or even water to capture intriguing reflections that can add a unique twist to your photos.

Experiment with Angles : Don’t limit yourself to eye-level shots. Try shooting from different angles—high above, down low, or even from unusual vantage points—to create dynamic and interesting compositions.

Symmetry and Patterns : Look for symmetrical compositions or repeating patterns in the ship’s architecture or design. These can create visually pleasing and harmonious images.

Details Matter : Zoom in on the intricate details that make the cruise ship special. These could be ornate decorations, fine textures, or even the little touches in the cabins.

Utilize Negative Space : Sometimes, giving your subject some breathing room within the frame can create a sense of elegance and sophistication. Negative space can also help direct the viewer’s attention to the main subject.

Capture Emotions : Focus on capturing emotions and expressions. Whether it’s a guest’s excitement, wonder, or relaxation, these shots can add a human touch to your image.

Editing Enhancement : After capturing your shots, consider using photo editing tools to enhance the colors, contrast, and overall look of your images. Just remember to maintain a natural and authentic feel.

Be Patient : Sometimes the perfect shot requires patience. Wait for the right moment to capture that perfect sunset, a playful interaction, or an interesting composition.

Remember that practice makes perfect, so don’t be afraid to experiment and try new techniques. Over time, you’ll develop your own style and a keen eye for capturing the essence of cruising.

Final Thoughts On Fun Cruise Photo Ideas For Your Next Trip

I have take a few cruises where I sat back and took very few photos, trying to be in the moment instead, and I have since regretted it. Photos are our way of preserving memories, an instant in time that we want to hold on to.

So, take those pictures! And on your next cruise, try to go a little further with your photography. But most of all, have fun with it.

How to pick a stateroom

So many choices. We provide a guide to how to get started finding the perfect stateroom.

We are one of the largest cruise ship deck plans websites in the world. We have over 241 ocean cruise ships in our database. For each ship we show the current cruise ship deck plan. We also show each cabin type (category) for that ship. Within each cabin type we provide detail diagrams (stateroom floor plans), pictures, videos, features, square footage and more. We also list the handicap cabins. We show actual ship exterior pictures and also pictures of places on the decks. We list all the main features for each ship including a listing of features NOT on that ship. This helps to make researching cruise ships so easy and so fun! We give you power at your finger tips to find the information you are looking for. It is all available from one page and usually just a click away. We hope you enjoy! The CRUISEDECKPLANS Team.

Decide what type of cabin you would like.

There are four main types (categories) of cabins: Inside cabins: These cabins are usually the lowest price. Typically they will have twin beds that convert to a queen size, a private bath with a shower, a closet for hanging clothes, a dresser and a television. These cabins do not have a window to let natural light in. To help give the occupants an impression of having a view, some inside cabins have a virtual view. That means there is a large screen that displays outside views. Expect to pay $100 to $200 a night for an inside cabin. Exception: Carnival has several cabins which are classified as inside cabins but actually have a french glass door which allows light into the room (no balcony, but the door can be opened). Carnival also has some cabins that have a window, but because the window has an obstructed view (that means there is a railing or object in the way) it is listed as an inside cabin. Royal Caribbean has some cabins that have a window but look out over an inside promenade area. These are called "promenade staterooms". Oceanview cabins: These cabins are like inside cabins but usually have a port hole or window. A window is much more desirable than a porthole because the porthole can be difficult to look through. Windows will vary in size and some cabins will even have full floor to ceiling windows. Most window sizes for oceanview cabins are about 4 feet by 3 feet. Be sure to read the cabin description carefully to determine if there is a different type of window. Windows can not be opened. Expect to pay $150 to $250 a night for an oceanview. Balcony cabins: These cabins are better, and more expensive, than oceanview cabins because they typically have full glass sliding doors that lead to a balcony. The balcony allows fresh air and light into the cabin and also may have additional chairs or loungers. Balconies tend to be separated by dividers which give some sense of privacy, but be aware that most balconies are not fully private and can be viewed from above or by the cabin next to you. Balconies on new Norwegian Cruise Line ships and Princess Cruise Line ships tend to be smaller and more narrow than balconies on other ships. We will list balcony size in the cabin description.  Carnival offers what is called a "Cove Balcony" on some of their ships. These balconies are very popular because they sit lower on the ship (closer to the water line). Expect to pay $200 to $400 a night for an balcony cabin. Suite: A suite is a premium cabin on a cruise ship. It is usually much larger than a balcony and includes more perks. Suites typically have a full bath tub, large shower, larger closets, larger balcony, larger TV, and butler services. Expect to pay $400 to over $1,000 a night for a suite.

Decide where you would like the cabin located.

Cabins are priced based on location on the ship. Typically cabins on lower decks are less expensive. Typically cabins midship (in the middle part of a deck) cost higher. Balcony and Suite cabins on the very aft of the ship can also be more expensive than other cabins. In order to set the pricing many cruise lines will divide each cabin type into sub categories. For example a balcony cabin may be divided into sub categories such as B1, B2, B3, B4. In most cases the cabin size and features in a sub category is the exactly the same. The only difference is usually the location of the cabin on the ship. Please look for the notes on the category descriptions to determine if there is a difference in size or features between the subcategories. Exception: Royal Caribbean and other cruise lines will also use sub categories to distinquish between how many occupants the cabin will sleep. Therefore a cabin that can sleep up to 4 people will be a different sub category from a cabin that sleeps only 2 people. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if your cabin is in a good location. Cabins are best located when they are next to, above or below other cabins. As a rule of thumb avoid booking a cabin under a public area or kitchen. If you are looking for a balcony cabin, please be aware that on many ships the cabins that are below the pool deck may also be shaded by a roof overhang from the deck above. You can also use our drag deck feature to determine if there is a overhang. TIP: Many of the cruise ships are so large now and have so many floors that elevators are required to get to the public areas from your stateroom. But during peak times you could be waiting awhile to get on an elevator. If you pick a stateroom near the top or near the lower decks of the ship you may find a much better experience getting around. For example a stateroom on top of the ship gets you closer to the pool and buffet areas. A stateroom near the main public decks gets you closer to the lounges and bars. If you do need to take an elevator it is easier to find one that is empty if you are starting from the top or the bottom. You will also find the busiest elevators are the ones that go up to the buffet.

Service charge comparison

Many of the Cruise Lines charge a service fee on top of the cruise fare. Regardless of what the fee is used for, you will need to plan the following cost into the price of the cruise. The prices shown reflect the current service fee for a 7 day cruise for 2 people. (All prices subject to change)

First look: We got early access to Disney Cruise Line's first new ship in 10 years

As Mickey Mouse would say, "Oh boy!"

For the first time in a decade, Disney Cruise Line is debuting a new ship, and — as we saw during an exclusive sneak peek on Tuesday — it's truly spectacular.

Christened Wednesday at Port Canaveral in Florida, 2,500-passenger Disney Wish (4,000 at total occupancy) offers everything from a "Star Wars"-themed bar and a waterslide that features animation to a revamped kids club and interactive "Frozen"- and Marvel-themed restaurants.

As you can see in our first-look array of Disney Wish photos below, it's a vessel heavy on technology, as well as magic.

When you first board Disney Wish, you'll be welcomed by cast members (Disney's term for crew and other employees) with a booming announcement as you step into the Grand Hall. It's a sweeping three-deck Cinderella-themed atrium with a stage area, balconies and bejeweled staircases. There's also a bronze sculpture of Cinderella herself and a chandelier that was constructed to look like an upside-down version of her twirling dress.

Disney isn't just for kids. In that vein, there are plenty of bars for adults to grab a drink. But this is Disney, after all, so you should fully expect that many libations will come with a bit of fanfare -- and a price tag to match.

Perhaps the most anticipated watering hole on the vessel is the Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge. The premise is that you're on a luxury ride between galaxies; every few minutes, the screen behind the bar jumps to a different location at hyperspeed.

Another great bar that's worth a visit is The Bayou. With its New Orleans vibe, it's an obvious tie-in to "The Princess and the Frog," boasting earthy tones and a ceiling overflowing with flowers. Rumor has it that you can also find beignets at this outpost.

Disney Cruise Line's Oceaneer Club is for kids aged 3 to 12. There's also the Small World Nursery for little ones aged 6 months to 3 years. Offerings include a nursery area with cribs; Mickey & Minnie Captain's Deck, a nautically themed playground; an Imagineering Lab for creative activities; Star Wars Cargo Bay, a "Star Wars"-themed play area; and other spaces that feature Princesses, Marvel superheroes and more.

Kids can reach the Oceaneer Club in one of several ways, but usually their preferred method is the slide, located in the Grand Hall. (Don't worry, parents. There are stairs for you.)

For tweens and teens, there are Edge and Vibe, where the 11-14 and 14-17 crowds can chill with video games, coffee and mocktail bars and a less organized "come and go as you please" setup. Vibe is equipped with a side room that can be separated for use by 18- to 20-year olds who are too old for the kids club but too young to hang out at adult bars.

Dining is always a production on a Disney Cruise -- and that's a good thing. Disney Wish offers three new main dining room concepts, including 1923, an ode to old Hollywood and the golden age of animation; Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, which celebrates Anna and Kristoff's upcoming nuptials; and World of Marvel, where diners find themselves and their ship shrunken by Ant-Man after a Quantum Core mishap.

Attractions and public spaces

On Disney Wish, the main pool deck features four tiered pools. There's also a splash area for kids.

Another one of Disney Wish's highlights is the AquaMouse water slide. Billed as the line's first at-sea attraction, it's a combination of watery fun and animation that both kids and adults will love.

For anyone who needs some relaxation after a day riding AquaMouse, Senses Spa offers a complete menu of spa treatments. For the first time, the space also has an outdoor area with loungers and hot tubs.

Entertainment is everywhere on Disney Wish. With that in mind, there are several theaters and lounges that house everything from major Broadway-caliber productions and game shows to trivia and movies.

For a sweet treat, including gelato, macarons and more, check out Joyful Sweets, near the pool deck.

Feeling like you need a refresh? Captain Hook now has his very own barbershop for the fellas, and women can head to the Untangled Salon to be coiffed and manicured. For kids, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is the place to be. Parents, be warned: makeovers for your minis don't come cheap.

A new feature for Disney Cruise Line, the Hero Zone is a multipurpose space that serves as Disney Wish's basketball court and a venue for a new inflatable play area that's set up at select times on each sailing. It also hosts Jack Jack's Incredible Diaper Dash, where parents enter the littlest cruisers into an adorable race.

Although Disney Wish offers mainly short voyages, anyone needing to do laundry on the ship can take advantage of onboard launderettes, like this one located on Deck 8.

For more adult respite, seek out the Quiet Cove, which offers pool, hot tub, lounge and bar areas just for grownups. The super-luxe ambiance will leave you feeling refreshed for sure.

This balcony cabin sleeps two, but there are several options for families that sleep up to five, as well as connecting cabins that make it easy for larger families or groups to travel together.

Disney Wish is replete with suite options, including Concierge Suites and two-deck options like the Aurora Suite and the Tower Suite. The first has access to a dedicated Concierge Lounge, while the the last has three bedrooms and 3.5 baths and is built into the vessel's fake funnel. The Tower Suite is the most expensive accommodation on the ship, running several thousand dollars per night.

Disney Wish has taken Disney Cruise Line's Midship Detective Agency to a whole new level with Uncharted Adventure, a high-tech cell phone-based interactive game that takes participants around the ship in search of clues. It's not quite ready yet, but a demo was set up for us by a team of Imagineers during the preview sailing.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland collapsed Tuesday into the Patapsco River after it was struck by a large cargo ship.

The bridge's collapse has prompted huge emergency response, with the Baltimore City Fire Department describing the collapse as a mass-casualty incident, and rescue crews searching for seven people in the river. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency.

Baltimore  Mayor Brendon Scott  said on X that he was aware of the incident and was en route to the bridge. "Emergency personnel are on scene, and efforts are underway," he said.

The 1.6 mile, 4-lane bridge named for the author of the "Star-Spangled Banner," was the second-longest continuous-truss bridge span in the United States and third in the world.

How the Key Bridge Collapsed in Baltimore: Maps and Photos

On Tuesday, a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed into the water seconds after it was struck by a cargo ship, sending vehicles on the bridge into the river below. The ship lost power and issued a mayday call shortly before it hit the bridge.

The ship, a 948-foot-long cargo vessel called Dali, was about a half hour into its journey toward Colombo, Sri Lanka, when it hit a main pillar of the bridge. All crew members are safe, according to the ship’s owners.

A mayday call from the ship gave officials enough time to stop traffic at both ends of the bridge. The waters where the bridge collapsed are about 50 feet deep. By Tuesday morning, six construction workers who had been fixing potholes on the bridge remained missing as divers and other emergency workers on boats and helicopters continued to search for them. Two others had been rescued, and one was in the hospital.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge was opened in 1977 and carried more than 12.4 million vehicles last year. The bridge was one of the three major ways to cross the Patapsco River and formed part of Baltimore’s beltway.

The Port of Baltimore is a major trade hub that handled a record amount of foreign cargo last year. It is an especially important destination — the nation’s largest by volume last year — for deliveries of cars and light trucks.

Officials recovered the bodies of two construction workers who were on Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed early Tuesday morning after a 984-foot-long cargo ship collided into a pillar.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore called the collapse Wednesday " a global crisis ."

"The national economy and the world's economy depends on the Port of Baltimore. The port handles more cars and more farm equipment than any other port in the country," Moore said.

Here's what you should know:

• The victims: The six people who are presumed dead were from Mexico Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, according to Col. Roland L. Butler Jr, the superintendent of Maryland State Police. Two bodies were recovered and have been identified as Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes from Mexico and Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera from Guatemala. The two workers were filling potholes on the bridge and were later found trapped in a red pickup truck in about 25 feet of water, Butler said. The FBI is handling notifying the victims' families, Butler said.
• Recovery efforts: Authorities are pausing search efforts for the four other workers who are presumed dead, because additional vehicles are encased in concrete and other debris, making it unsafe for divers, Butler said. Once salvage operations clear the debris, divers will search for more remains, he said.
• The investigation: The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation into the fatal incident, according to the agency's chair Jennifer Homendy. During a Wednesday news conference, Homendy said there were 21 crew members and two pilots on board the Dali cargo ship when it crashed into the bridge. She also said a senior NTSB hazmat investigator identified 56 containers of hazardous material, and that some containers are in the water. The agency received six hours of voyage data from the ship and the investigation could take 12 to 24 months to complete, Homendy said. She emphasized that NTSB will not analyze information collected or provide conclusions while on scene of the collapse.
• Looking forward: Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said rebuilding the bridge will not be "quick or easy" but that it will get done. He said there are four main focus points ahead: reopening the port, dealing with supply chain issues until its reopening, rebuilding the bridge and dealing with traffic issues until the bridge is rebuilt. Biden  pledged the full support  of the federal government in the response and recovery efforts. His administration has already conveyed a sense of urgency to open up federal funding to remove debris and ultimately rebuild the bridge. Maryland has submitted a request to the Biden administration for emergency relief funds "to assist in our work going forward," Moore said Wednesday.

It's almost impossible to place people on the bow of ship due to the unstable structure, fire official says

Baltimore City Fire Chief James Wallace said Wednesday that the cargo ship's bridge structure and containers at the bow remain unstable.

"It's going to be very difficult, if not impossible, and very dangerous, to place people on the bow of that boat right now," Wallace told CNN's Kaitlan Collins.

"Naturally, we're still very cognizant of the fact that there are hazardous materials on board the vessel itself," Wallace said, alluding to the National Transportation Safety Board saying earlier that 56 containers were carrying hazardous materials.

Wallace said his team is relying heavily on aerial recognizance, including drones. "That's the only way we're able to see in," he said.  

He added that the aerial surveillance has "been able to really assure us right now we have no [chemical] reactions on board." 

"It's just utter devastation," NTSB chief says of the bridge collapse site

Jennifer Homendy, chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, called the site of the Key Bridge collapse "devastating."

"It's pretty devastating, certainly, seeing not just what's going on with the cargo containers, but just looking at what was a bridge span — three bridge spans that is pretty much gone. It's just utter devastation," she said at Wednesday evening's news briefing.

She added that she is thinking of families who lost loved ones and those who are waiting to reunite with their lived ones.

NTSB interviewed the Dali's captain and some other crew members today, agency chief says

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the ship's captain, his mate, the chief engineer and one other engineer today, according to Chair Jennifer Homendy.

The two pilots on board the Dali at the time of collision will be interviewed tomorrow, she added.

Cargo ship's voyage data recorder is basic when compared to an airplane's, NTSB chair says

The voyage data recorder on the cargo ship Dali was a "newer model" but is considered basic when compared to that on an airplane, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"But it is very basic compared to say, a flight data recorder, where we would have 1,000 parameters," she said at a news conference on Wednesday.

The NTSB chief investigator Marcel Muise added:

"It's not a ship-wide system recorder, so most of the sensors that are being recorded are from the bridge. So things like GPS, the audio, rudder feedback, rudder commands are recorded on there. But not engineering, the temperature of each cylinder, power distribution sensors."

There were no tug boats with Dali at the time of the collision. That's normal, NTSB chief says

There were no tugs with Dali when the cargo vessel collided with Baltimore's Key Bridge, which is normal protocol, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

Remember: At 01:26:39 on Tuesday, Dali's pilot made a general very high frequency (VHF) radio call for tugs in the vicinity to assist, the NTSB investigator Marcel Muise had said.

"The tugs help the vessel leave the dock, leave the port and get into the main ship channel. And then they leave. Once it's on its way, it's a straight shot through the channel. So there are no tugs with the vessel at the time. So they were calling for tugs," she said.

NTSB chair says she saw some containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water

National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy said she did see some of the 56 containers that were carrying hazardous materials in the water.

When asked how many

When asked how many containers of hazardous materials were in the water, Homendy said:

"I did see some containers in the water, and some breached significantly on the vessel itself," she said. "I don't have an exact number, but it's something that we can provide in an update."

Homendy said that a preliminary report should be out in two to four weeks.

Bridge did not have any redundancy, unlike the preferred method for building bridges today, NTSB chair says

Baltimore's Key Bridge did not have any redundancy, which is included in the preferred method of building bridges in the present day, according to National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy.

"The bridge is a fracture critical," she explained. "What that means is if a member fails that would likely cause a portion of, or the entire bridge, to collapse, there's no redundancy. The preferred method for building bridges today is that there is redundancy built in, whether that's transmitting loads to another member or some sort of structural redundancy. This bridge did not have redundancy," Homendy said.

There are 17,468 fracture critical bridges in the United States out of 615,000 bridges total, she said, citing the Federal Highway Administration.
