Yearbook Spread Anatomy

12 elements of yearbook spread design.

Page-Design

1. DOUBLE-PAGE SPREAD

A double-page spread is made of two pages, one left (even page number) and one right (odd page number). The gutter is where the two pages join together. Always design as double-page spreads.

2. EXTERNAL MARGINS

Set adequate external margins. External margins work like a frame around a picture. The top and side external margins should always be an equal number of picas.

3. BOTTOM EXTERNAL MARGINS

The bottom external margin should be at least 2-3 picas larger. It acts as a foundation for the spread content and allows room for the folios.

The folios are page numbers and reader reference information usually placed in the bottom margin. They should be as specific as possible; use spread content, not section labels.

5. STRUCTURE

On this spread, grids were used as the structure. Grids are nothing more than narrow columns. The grids are all the same number of picas wide. Remember the same structure should be used throughout the entire book for visual consistency. Notice the grids are separated by a half a pica instead of the traditional one pica. This adds a very contemporary look to the spread and is one of the newest looks in yearbook today.

The eyeline is a horizontal guideline that runs across the spread. It helps visually unify the spread and is used as a place to start or end content elements. The eyeline should never be placed in the exact middle of the spread.

7. PHOTO PACKAGE

The cluster of candid photos is always anchored by a dominant photo. Usually, a variety of candid photos with different shapes and sizes works best. Notice that eleven candid photos were used by scaling down the size of all photos in the tight package. Scale is paramount when packaging photos if the designer wants a large number of photos.

8. COPY PACKAGE

A primary headline, secondary headline and copy block (story) make up the copy package. In most cases, the verbal message of the headline should tie to the visual image in the dominant photo. The secondary headline acts as a bridge between the primary headline and the copy block.

9. CAPTIONS

Group captions are used with this type of photo package, as traditional caption placement doesn’t work. When using group captions, it is imperative that the reader can easily tell which caption goes with which photo. There also needs to be a clear reader entry point for each caption. Use this quick caption writing checklist to help write your captions.

10. SECONDARY COVERAGE

Adding secondary coverage to the spread makes content more dimensional. Including more layers of coverage enables the staff to tell a more complete story of the year. Secondary coverage should change from spread to spread to add both coverage and visual variety.

11. WHITE SPACE

Using planned white space as a graphic element is very effective for contemporary looking design. A horizontal and vertical grid of white space is used to separate and highlight the copy block as well as the secondary coverage quote package.

12. GRAPHIC ELEMENTS

Notice that the type is coordinated. All the display type is the same font, weight, capitalization pattern and color, which visually ties the spread together.

9 Yearbook Design Examples to Get Inspired by

Tackling your yearbook design? Kept by people as a remembrance of the good old days, the pressure is on. Nail your design with tips, tricks, and inspiration.

Table of Contents

Gone are the days when yearbooks looked like awkward family photo albums. Yearbook design is a thing, and the options are endless. Tell last year’s story in a visually appealing way and solidify memories for years to come.

From your yearbook layout to the overall theme, graphic design plays a vital role in creating a book full of memories. A couple of pictures of seniors and some quotes slapped together aren’t going to cut it anymore.

Between typography, an attention-grabbing cover, and all the other visual elements a yearbook comprises, it’s only natural that you feel a bit overwhelmed.

Are you drawing a blank when thinking of how to design a yearbook? If you’re not sure what would work for your school, don’t fret. Let’s go over some yearbook design ideas and fill your head with inspiration.

How to design a yearbook cover

The cover of your yearbook design is the first impression people will get. You probably know the saying: don't judge a book by its cover. Well, the fact is that many people do judge a book by its cover.

A good cover is essential to make your yearbook stand out. However, an overcrowded design isn’t the solution. Here are some tips on how to design a yearbook cover:

  • You can mix and match design elements as long as you decide on a hierarchy. Enlarge what is important to show the main elements instantly.
  • Don’t put too much text on the cover. It will only distract from the design, and text-wise, everything is already inside the book.
  • Remember the design of the spine. Once placed on a bookshelf, it is the only thing you see.
  • Make sure your cover complements your overall yearbook design. You can use a similar color palette or other stylistic elements throughout.

Yearbook cover examples

The cover of your yearbook sets the tone for what’s to come. Let’s have a look at some examples that nailed their cover design:

1. Seoul National University

This graduation catalog from Seoul National University is a fantastic yearbook design example of how to keep things minimal. The deep blue color will make it pop on any bookshelf. However, the design doesn’t distract from the primary information.

seoulnationaluniversity.jpg

It’s a fun way to visualize last year’s statistics and entice people to read the yearbook.

This style is great to consider with relaying information like your school history, class achievements in numbers, or stats.

The colors are on-trend, and information is displayed in a clear, unobtrusive way. This makes for a great yearbook layout since you instantly see who the spread is about. It includes some fun facts, which is a great idea to evoke emotion and keep things light-hearted.

This idea is simple to execute since you don’t need photographs or illustrations. It’s composed of geometric shapes, which, as long as you have a solid color palette, any design rookie can make.

This fun cover showcases students and various moments of their time at school. It’s a great example of how to involve pictures in your design. The designer used filters that are similar in style and the same shape for each picture, making them seamlessly blend.

The illustration shows the school itself. Bright orange is used for the spine and the borders surrounding the illustration, making sure the yearbook design stands out.

It illustrates the journey of the class of 2012 and displays a fun quote. The title of the school is incorporated in the illustration itself. Other than that, the information has been kept to a minimum to emphasize the illustration itself.

On the cover, each of the graduates' names is displayed. The year, title, and website are prominently displayed, as well as the logo on the spine. You don’t need further information, as you can find the rest inside the yearbook.

2. USC School of Pharmacy

Want to keep things a bit more playful? How about illustrating the cover? This cover illustration design by Michelle Chang Wengrod for the USC School of Pharmacy shows the possibilities an illustrated cover holds.

usc.jpg

3. Eastlake Highschool Talon

There is always a happy medium if you don’t feel much for a minimalistic or playful style. This stunning cover for Eastlake High school Talon has fun colors and an illustration, but is toned down compared to our previous example.

4. Louise Arbour Secondary School

Not too confident about your illustration skills? Of course, you can always use pictures instead. Like Sandeep Gill did for the Louise Arbour Secondary School yearbook design.

louisearbour.jpg

5. Marble Falls High School

Remember we mentioned keeping the spine in mind? The last example of yearbook design ideas for a cover incorporates the spine in the design. Coby Lusinger used colorful geometric shapes that dictate the cover and splay onto the spine.

How to design a yearbook spread

When it comes to designing a yearbook spread, there aren’t any rules. You can follow some design guidelines to make striking spreads, but there aren’t harsh do’s and don’ts.

It’s a good idea to stick with a particular theme and have your yearbook design adhere to it. Think about browsing through it page by page. That’s much more satisfying when it is a cohesive book, right?

Naturally, each spread contains different content. Here are some tips to turn the whole book into a cohesive display, no matter the content:

  • Stick to a color palette
  • Pick a couple of fonts only
  • Create a yearbook layout template
  • Use the same filter for photographs
  • Be mindful of placement
  • Size your elements

Bear in mind that you don’t have to stick to these rules. If you want to go all out with a rainbow variety of colors, that’s fine. Stick to two or three fonts and use a similar placement for your spreads, and your design will still be cohesive.

Yearbook spread examples

While the cover of your yearbook is a vital part of the design, it’s the inside where the fun really starts. This is where you can go all out using colors, shapes, and other visual elements.

Let’s look at various yearbook design ideas for your yearbook’s spreads:

6. Birmingham Young University Graphic Design Program

How stunning is this spread from the BYU Graphic Design Program? Leave it up to graphic designer Hannah Decker to create a striking yearbook page design.

birminghamyounguniversity.jpg

7. NCFA 2014 Yearbook

You might be surprised to learn that this glossy yearbook spread comes from a college fantasy football league. Nevertheless, it’s a great testament to the power of simplicity. This spread by Doug Hovener could just as well be a professional sports team’s yearbook.

ncfa.jpg

8. Rhodes Island School of Design

We’ve mentioned using illustrations for the cover of your yearbook. Why stop there? Illustrations make a great addition to spreads and keep the overall design playful. Case in point: Barron Webster and Jonathan Rinker ’s design for the Rhodes Island School of Design.

rhodesislandschoolofdesign.jpg

Again, the color scheme is your friend, as this eclectic example shows with a simple three-color palette.

9. The Issue by Numbers

If you thought you could only draw inspiration from actual yearbooks to gather yearbook design ideas, think again. We love the idea of creating a spread with an infographic, showcasing the issue by numbers. Like this one, designed by Adam Sharratt .

theissuebynumbers.jpg

Design a yearbook page online

Now that your head is filled with yearbook design ideas, let’s talk about putting them on paper. There are numerous ways to design a yearbook, from finding a yearbook creator online to hiring a graphic designer.

You can find quite a few yearbook templates online. Bear in mind that if you want to be creative, you do risk having a similar design as your rival school.

If you have a limited budget, you can opt for a free platform like Canva. You’ll be spoilt for choice in finding a standard yearbook layout. With a little budget, you can use a monthly service such as Fotor or the paid version of Canva. This increases your customization options a bit.

If graphic design is familiar territory, you can also use Adobe programs. InDesign to create spreads from scratch, or Illustrator to create your own graphics. This way, you’ll be sure of a unique, creative design.

Creating from scratch is only recommended if you know your way around graphic design. Remember that a yearbook is a memorandum people keep for the rest of their lives, so a yearbook riddled with design fails is not something you want.

Another way to ensure a unique design and avoid design mistakes is by hiring a designer . This doesn’t come cheap, but bear in mind there are options such as subscription-based design services like Manypixels . You pay a flat monthly fee and have a team of designers at your fingertips.

Final thoughts

We hope these yearbook design ideas have inspired you enough to tackle your yearbook’s design confidently. See the creation of your yearbook as a process. Don’t forget to have fun along the way. Good luck!

5 Great Yearbook Spread Design Ideas From High School Students

travel yearbook spread

Months after deciding on the perfect theme, advisers and their staffs still find themselves spending hours laboring over one thing: yearbook spread design.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term , “spread” refers to two pages in a yearbook that face each other. Since single page layouts are mostly limited to the first and last pages of the book (you know, the ones that’ll be covered up by signatures and messages anyway) there are literally dozens of spreads to design.

Of course, you already knew the yearbook was a bunch of hard work even if it you didn’t know the term “spread.” And that’s why we wrote this post: We do a lot of “how to” on the blog, but this one is all about inspiration.

So, let’s dive in and take a look at five of our favorite yearbook spread designs from students.

What Makes a Great Yearbook Spread Design?

But first… a quick aside.

To make a great yearbook spread, you should follow a similar theme. Ideally, your book will have a theme that’s tied together by design, content, and tone; but tying it together by design alone works, too. If your yearbook theme this year is 1920’s-inspired art deco with a muted color palette, for example, you probably don’t want your superlatives page to be riddled with rocketships and neon typeface; that’d look all out of sorts.

Next, you’re going to want your designers to bring a touch of subtlety to the spreads they put together. The goal of a well-designed yearbook spread is complement the content on the page, not overpower it.

Aside over.

Yearbook Spread Design #1: Pulling Elements From Your Cover

The easiest way to liven up your spreads is to pull elements from your well-designed yearbook cover into the pages themselves. This will create continuity throughout year yearbook while still affording your designers some wiggle room for creativity.

Here’s an example from Oakwood School:

incorporating cover elements into yearbook spread design

The same vivid pattern from the yearbook’s cover is replicated inside. Notice how a single element of the design has been expanded in order to provide a suitable background?

It creates a pretty powerful aesthetic.

Yearbook Spread Design #2: Incorporating Social Media

Social media in high school yearbooks is a pretty “en vogue” thing. Because, well, high school students love social media. (In fact, we bet if you could submit a lab report as a Snap story, every kid in the 11th grade would ace chemistry. But we digress.)

using social media to anchor a yearbook spread design

While the overall theme of your yearbook might not have anything to do with social media, you can still tie the content together and package it with a savvy design.

Using a social media platform as inspiration for a page spread certainly yields some gorgeous results, but it serves a secondary purpose, too: Creating engagement. By asking students who aren’t on your yearbook staff to submit their photos you can create a buzz about your book that will carry all the way through the school year.

Yearbook Spread Design #3: Changing Up the Traditional Collage

The collage is a tried-and-true approach to designing yearbook spreads. And while they give you a great bang for your buck in terms of coverage, they can sometimes lack in visual interest.

Not so when the staff at James A. Garfield High School set out to include coverage of its prom in the yearbook:

new yearbook spread design for collage pages

First off, major props for getting the prom in the yearbook, right? That’s some dedication.

Second, this collage approach is fantastic for one big reason (and a lot of little ones, as well): The variety in how pictures are presented, yet how much structure remains on the page.  Using a grid approach for most of the photos provides order and structure, while the cut-outs across the yellow band catch the eye and provide a sense of action.

Yearbook Spread Design #4: Reversing Color Schemes To Create a Pop

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t mess too much with the order created by your yearbook’s established color palette. That being said, rules were made to be broken.

In this senior awards spread, the staff at Garrett High School worked within its color scheme, but did one thing different: They reversed it so that big, bold colors were the primaries. Check it out:

reversing out color schemes can make your spread pop

While it’d be a bit much to do this on every page, it’s striking when used once or twice.

Yearbook Spread Design Tip #5: Structuring Layouts for Consistency

This one’s less about addition and more about good, solid design. Often, single yearbook spreads get highlighted outside the context of the rest of the book. But how does that highlighted spread hold up against the rest of the book? And how well does it maintain consistency with the rest of the pages?

Take a look at these spreads from the yearbook staff at Cesar Chavez High School:

cesar chavez spread example 1

Design-wise we’ve got a nice block of text to the left, a smattering of action in across both pages, and additional commentary in the form of captions to the right.

While they’re not exactly the same, these layouts smack of visual order and consistency. In other words, they don’t just look good on their own. They look even better when viewed together.

Finding a little bit of inspiration for your yearbook spread can be as simple as sticking to what works best for your school or changing up the normal way of doing things. It all depends on your goals.

Whichever you choose, though, we bet you’ll find your students are up to the challenge.

Compose your layout with a vibrant background and place photos in white borders. Perfect for showcasing laughter and dress-up days, use this layout for school spirit week, Earth Day projects or Halloween activities. Keep the page in line with your theme by adding a catchy title.

travel yearbook spread

With different colored backgrounds, this yearbook layout grabs your attention. To tie it together, ensure the photos across the pages are of the same theme or event. Feature volunteer parents, teachers, coaches, lunch staff or school administration.

travel yearbook spread

Design a layout with two contrasting colors so the pages pop. Rulers, stencils and animal shapes make for great accent pieces and can tie your theme together. Consider a theme like learning about the environment, animals or diversity.

travel yearbook spread

Display a group class image along with individual photos for a well-rounded design. Light background colors allow the photos to take the spotlight. Design one for each grade, alternating title placement and color themes.

travel yearbook spread

Capture the stories of each class with a group shot and individual photographs. A large title adds zest to the page—and makes it stand out as a feature spread. On following pages, be sure to sprinkle in favorite photos from the class’s outdoor excursions, talent shows and playground laughter.

Wow 'em with showstopper spreads

2020-02-24_15-06-09

Beautiful photos, smart layouts and captivating headlines will entice buyers to take in your spreads. But like eating PB&J every day, seeing the same design repeatedly makes for a less than appetizing experience. To spice things up, consider sprinkling showstoppers throughout the book.

Above:   Harrisonburg High School used a full bleed photo for their showstopper spread on the Women’s March in 2017.

What are showstoppers.

Showstoppers are original, creative layouts that break the traditional design look. Also called wow spreads, breakers or disruptors, they are one-offs meant to dazzle the audience. Breaker spreads provide a change of pace, disrupting the book’s layout organization and the traditional design rules – dominant photo, eyeline, main story, etc.  (The theme’s graphic elements, colors and fonts are still implemented to provide continuity throughout the book.)

The beauty of wow spreads is the creative factor. There’s no right or wrong way to design one. Showstoppers can have full bleed photos that cover the whole spread and draw the reader in. They can feature images across three-quarters of the spread and include more traditional design elements in the other 25 percent. Or they might omit a dominant photo completely and fill the two facing pages with secondary coverage. Showstoppers provide an opportunity to cover fun or nontraditional topics that will interest students. Oak Grove High School created a wow spread in 2017 that featured things students loved about their school. Vista Ridge High School put together a Cosmopolitan-like quiz, asking “Are you a true Ranger?” To highlight academic statistics, Southern Methodist University featured facts and figures, with a full-bleed photo of an iconic campus building. These ideas provide innovative coverage of the school community in a fun and fresh package.

Showstopping content.

Showstoppers are a great way to add fun coverage to your book. Whether it covers the latest trends, pop culture or food joints, a wow spread is an innovative way to share the content. Here are some fun suggestions for topics to cover on your breaker spreads:

  • Trends   (fashion, memes, dance moves, gadgets, slang)
  • Pop culture  (movies, books, celebrities, TV, music)
  • Current events  (local, national, world)
  • Food   (hangouts, favorite dishes, snacks, late night places, cafeteria options)
  • Drink  (coffee, water bottles, snow cones/slushies)
  • Studying  (midterms, finals, study habits, music choices, coffee & food choices)
  • Travel   (summer, Christmas, spring break)
  • Social media   (Twitter feeds, Instagram photos, Snapchat streaks)
  • A-Z spreads   (Use the alphabet to cover any topic—clubs, academics, school characteristics)
  • Books  (English required reading, social reading)
  • Socks/shoes  (sandals, heels, boys’ sneakers, popular styles, colorful/unusual socks)
  • Between the bells  (hallway coverage between classes)
  • Pets  (exotic pets, selfies)
  • Obsessions  (pop culture, collections)
  • Game Day  (essentials, day-in-the-life features, off-the-field events)
  • Outdoor fun  (extreme sports, outside activities)
  • Holidays  (Halloween, Christmas, Valentine’s Day)
  • State fairs & rodeos
  • Day in the life  (athletes, pep rally day, theater performance day, one student, multiple students, teachers, a single desk)
  • Statistics  (facts & figures with illustrations, graphics or large photos)
  • Sleep  (lack of, reasons for reduced amounts, surveys, sleep deprivation survival tips)
  • Weather  (summer heat, unexpected flooding, ice or snow)

Add wow to traditional coverage

Not everyone has the space or budget for fun spreads  (you can always shrink the coverage to include in the people section) . But despite space issues, showstoppers can still be incorporated into the book. Create breaker pages for topics you’re covering anyway like theater, art or swimming.

Spreads that have strong photography lend themselves to wow designs. Images with dead space work well as full bleed photos  (think lots of sky, grass or a solid background) . Stories and smaller photos can be layered on top without feeling cluttered. Golf, for example, is a good choice for a disruptor spread. A wide shot of a golfer on the fairway provides a lush amount of green grass and ample space to add additional, smaller photos.

Sports and events that happen in a darkened environment are also smart choices for wow designs. The choir or dance team performing on stage can make for a compelling breaker spread. Football and soccer pages can also wow the audience with the dark backgrounds. Please keep in mind, while breaker spreads can create gorgeous design they tend to have fewer photos. Be mindful of the groups you feature on showstoppers so they still receive adequate coverage.

Showstopper spreads are a great to mix up the design, inspire creativity and wow your audience. PB&J pages will sustain most of your book, but every once in a while you need a steak. Dig in!

US measles cases are up in 2024. What's driving the increase?

There have been 17 times as many u.s. measles cases in the first three months of this year compared with the average number seen in the first three months of the previous three years., by devi shastri and mike stobbe | associated press • published april 11, 2024 • updated on april 11, 2024 at 3:36 pm.

Measles outbreaks in the U.S. and abroad are raising health experts' concern about the preventable, once-common childhood virus.

One of the world's most contagious diseases, measles can lead to potentially serious complications. The best defense, according to experts? Get vaccinated.

Here's what to know about the year — so far — in measles.

How many measles cases has the U.S. seen this year?

Get a weekly recap of the latest San Francisco Bay Area housing news. Sign up for NBC Bay Area’s Housing Deconstructed newsletter.

Nationwide, measles cases already are nearly double the total for all of last year.

The U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention documented 113 cases as of April 5. There have been seven outbreaks and most of U.S. cases — 73% — are linked to those flare-ups.

Still, the count is lower than some recent years: 2014 saw 667 cases and 2019 had 1,274.

CDC says to make sure you're protected against measles ahead of summer travel

Why is this a big deal.

The 2019 measles epidemic was the worst in almost three decades, and threatened the United States' status as a country that has eliminated measles by stopping the continual spread of the measles virus.

The CDC on Thursday released a report on recent measles case trends, noting that cases in the first three months of this year were 17 times higher than the average number seen in the first three months of the previous three years.

While health officials seem to be doing a good job detecting and responding to outbreaks, “the rapid increase in the number of reported measles cases during the first quarter of 2024 represents a renewed threat to elimination,” the report’s authors said.

Where is measles coming from?

The disease is still common in many parts of the world, and measles reaches the U.S. through unvaccinated travelers.

According to Thursday’s report, most of the recent importations involved unvaccinated Americans who got infected in the Middle East and Africa and brought measles back to the U.S.

Where were this year’s U.S. measles outbreaks?

Health officials confirmed measles cases in 17 states so far this year, including cases in New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago.

More than half of this year's cases come from the Chicago outbreak, where 61 people have contracted the virus as of Thursday, largely among people who lived in a migrant shelter.

How does measles spread?

Measles is highly contagious. It spreads when people who have it breathe, cough or sneeze and through contaminated surfaces. It also can linger in the air for two hours.

Up to 9 out of 10 people who are susceptible will get the virus if exposed, according to the CDC.

Measles used to be common among kids. How bad was it?

Before a vaccine became available in 1963, there were some 3 million to 4 million cases per year, which meant nearly all American kids had it sometime during childhood, according to the CDC. Most recovered.

But measles can be much more than an uncomfortable rash, said Susan Hassig, an infectious disease researcher at Tulane University.

“I think that people need to remember that this is a preventable disease," Hassig said. “It is a potentially dangerous disease for their children.”

In the decade before the vaccine was available, 48,000 people were hospitalized per year. About 1,000 people developed dangerous brain inflammation from measles each year, and 400 to 500 died, according to the CDC.

Is the measles vaccine safe? Where do vaccination rates stand?

The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe and effective. It is a routine and recommended childhood vaccine that is split into two doses.

Research shows it takes a very high vaccination rate to prevent measles from spreading: 95% of the population should have immunity against the virus.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, national vaccination rates for kindergartners fell to 93% and remain there. Many pockets of the country have far lower rates than that. The drop is driven in part by record numbers of kids getting waivers.

U.s. issues travel warning for israel with iran expected to attack any moment and fear gaza war could spread.

Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria’s capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. The official said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of such a magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire — so it’s unclear how far Iran’s leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there’s fear it could blow Israel’s ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

Padres vs. Dodgers prediction, odds, pick, how to watch – 4/12/2024

T he San Diego Padres will travel up the Interstate-5 freeway to face the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chavez Ravine. We’re here to share our MLB odds series , make a Padres-Dodgers prediction, and pick while showing you how to watch.

The Dodgers are coming off a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Unfortunately, they were unable to complete the three-game sweep. Bobby Miller labored through another start, going four innings while allowing two earned runs and five hits while striking out four and walking three. Then, the bullpen allowed an earned run. It did not help that the offense left eight runners on base despite having nine hits. Yet, Max Muncy was one of the few highlights as he hit a home run.

The Padres defeated the Chicago Cubs 10-2 to take 2 of 3 games. Coincidentally, they scored nine and 10 runs in the two wins but just one in the loss. The final game saw them produce great hitting. Also, Dylan Cease had a great outing, pitching six innings while allowing two earned runs on two hits while striking out seven to get his first win as a Padre.

The Dodgers and Padres opened the season in Korea, with each team winning one game. Now, these teams will play their first games in the United States, with the action starting at Dodgers Stadium. Last season, the Dodgers went 9-4 against the Padres, including a 4-2 record at Chavez Ravine.

Michael King will start for the Padres and is 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA. Recently, he tossed seven shutout innings while allowing four hits and striking out four in a win over the San Francisco Giants.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto will make the start for the Dodgers and is 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA. Significantly, he tossed five shutout innings in his last start while allowing three hits and striking out eight to get his first MLB win.

Why The Padres Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Padres have had an inconsistent start to the season, going 7-8 through their first 15 games. Yet, they have all the potential to compete with the Dodgers, and it all starts with what their lineup might do.

Xander Bogaerts has struggled. Unfortunately, he is hitting just .237 with one home run, six RBIs, and 11 runs while stealing one base. Fernando Tatis Jr. is batting only .264 with four home runs, nine RBIs, and 10 runs. Ultimately, he has to find a way to drive more runs home and be more productive to avoid becoming a boom-or-bust player. But Tatis is on pace for 41 home runs right now.

Jake Cronenworth is hitting well. So far, he is batting .304 with two home runs, 13 RBIs, and seven runs. Meanwhile, Manny Machado is not doing so well. Machado is batting .220 with two home runs, seven RBIs, and 11 runs. Conversely, fan-favorite Ha-Seong Kim is struggling, hitting .218 with one home run, seven RBIs, and eight runs.

The Padres will need good pitching to match their hitting. However, King is 1-0 with a 5.06 ERA in two games against the Dodgers, making this a difficult showdown for him and the Friars,

The Padres will cover the spread if their lineup can generate at least six runs. Then, they need King to avoid making mistakes down the middle.

Why The Dodgers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Dodgers are 10-5 and off to another good start as they look to make another world title run. Ultimately, it starts with good pitching and continues with a loaded lineup that continues to do damage nightly.

Mookie Betts is batting .364 with five home runs, 11 RBIs, and 10 runs. Therefore, he gives opposing pitchers a challenge right away. Shohei Ohtani has been great with his new team. So far, he is hitting .333 with three home runs, eight RBIs, and 12 runs. Freddie Freeman is batting .333 with one home run, eight RBIs, and nine runs. Substantially, he has continued to produce and is great to have in the third spot in the lineup. Teoscar Hernandez has been a pleasant surprise for the Dodgers. Currently, he is hitting .298 with four home runs, 15 RBIs, and 11 runs. Max Muncy is clipping .250 with one home run, eight RBIs, and eight runs.

The Dodgers will cover the spread if the top and heart of the order can do early damage to put the Padres in a hole. Then, Yamamoto must deliver another solid outing.

Final Padres-Dodgers Prediction & Pick

Who do you trust? King has been solid so far but struggles against the Dodgers. Conversely, Yamamoto has been inconsistent to start his MLB career and will make his first start against the Padres. In cases like this, you usually go with the better offense. The Dodgers likely will take 2 of 3 games against the Padres this weekend. Moreover, they likely will pile on some runs against them in at least one game. This seems to be the day it all comes crashing down for King. Look for the Dodgers to capitalize on any mistakes he makes and pound the baseball to cover the spread at home.
