Cruises are an ideal vacation option for families with toddlers . But with so many cruise lines to choose from – and new ships offering an array of endless activities and amenities for kids of all ages – you may find it difficult to wade through the sea of options when planning a cruise for babies and toddlers.

Many mainstream and premium cruise lines offer well-designed staterooms with families in mind. Many family cruise ships also offer water parks, rides and attractions, kid-themed venues, live entertainment and more – making cruises for babies and toddlers (as well as cruises for teens ) ideal for both young and multigenerational families.

"Many cruise lines offer the perfect solution for families with babies and toddlers to enjoy time together as well as adult-only cruise time ," says luxury travel adviser Elizabeth Caran, a member of Nexion Travel Group. Minimum sailing age: Infants must be 6 months of age or older on embarkation day to sail with Disney Cruise Line . Children must be 12 months or older to sail on the line's Hawaii , transatlantic and Panama Canal itineraries.

Disney Cruise Line's family staterooms and suites offer expanded spaces for families, with some sleeping up to seven guests. Many of these cabins are split-bathroom staterooms with two bathrooms; one has a sink with a combined shower and tub, while the other has a commode and sink. You'll also find bunk-style beds, room-dividing draperies, extra space for storing luggage, on-demand television, in-room movies and a refrigerator.

Families traveling with infants will have access to many complimentary baby amenities on board Disney's ships, including bottle warmers and sterilizers, diaper disposal units, playpens, cribs and Pack 'n Play portable cribs. Parents can request these items through the stateroom host or hostess. Complimentary strollers are also available through Guest Services, and all of the dining venues have highchairs to accommodate your hungry shipmates. If you forgot your baby's pacifier or other necessary items, you'll find baby essentials including rash cream, infant formula (ready to feed) and more available for purchase at the onboard shops.

While you can bring your own baby food on board the ship (the items that don't need food preparation from the kitchen), the restaurant staff is also happy to puree fresh vegetables, by request, in the main dining room or through room service.

When parents are ready for adult-only time, Disney's fleetwide "It's a Small World" nursery accommodates children starting at 6 months old (or 1 year of age, depending on the itinerary), up to age 3. This whimsical themed space boasts some of the most extended operating hours – and lowest hourly rates for child care – in the cruise industry. While at the "club," tots can read or play with interactive toys, games, videos or crafts. If one of the counselors needs to reach you on the ship, never fear: They can contact you via an onboard mobile phone service.

Older children – ages 3 to 12 – have access to the Disney's Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab play areas, which offer even more Disney-inspired fun. And don't forget all the other kid-friendly activities on the ship like themed parties and water attractions for little ones, as well as character encounters with Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a whole host of other princesses, pirates and superheroes. Minimum sailing age: MSC Cruises welcomes children of all ages but recommends consulting your pediatrician if you plan to sail with a baby younger than 12 months of age.

When you're ready to set sail with MSC, the line has connecting staterooms and large suites to accommodate families. You can also opt to stay in the exclusive MSC Yacht Club to experience the luxury ship-within-a-ship accommodations and amenities, which include private venues and a 24-hour dedicated private butler. Cribs and playpens from baby care brand Chicco are available for your complimentary use through the housekeeping staff.

The Baby Club (for ages 2 and younger) is one of five distinct offerings for kids. MSC partners with Chicco to provide a dedicated play space for babies and toddlers who are younger than 3 years old. MSC Baby Time is available at select times on sea days and in port, giving the ship's youngest guests an opportunity to play with pals from around the world while you supervise your children and engage with other parents. Little ones will also enjoy the educational toys from the Osservatorio Chicco Baby Research Center, which include rhythm and music activities and crawling games. Another MSC offering allows 2- and 3-year-olds to test out their budding culinary skills with a Baby Chef activity. Babysitting is an option at the Baby Club for kids between 1 and 3 years old. This service – and available hours – varies by ship, so check with the Youth Program once you're on board.

For slightly older sailors (aged 3 to 6), the Mini Club's partnership with Lego provides even more friends and fun with arts and crafts, games, and events.

This cruise line's kids menus offer a wide selection of delicious and fun choices assessed by nutritionists from the Osservatorio Chicco. Some food options are dedicated to 6- to 12-month-old palates, and the menus are available in the main and specialty restaurants. Each buffet also features a Kids' Corner or Marketplace Family & Kids area. If your wee ones get hungry at off-hours and you don't want to head out into the ship, you'll still be able to keep them satisfied and happy – room service is available 24 hours a day.

Minimum sailing age: Infants must be at least 6 months old on the first day of a Celebrity Cruises sailing or cruisetour. Some cruises/cruisetours require children be at least 12 months of age to participate.

Celebrity's Veranda Stateroom is the perfect option when traveling with younger kids as it allows parents the flexibility to go outside and enjoy a glass of wine or private time after the little one is fast asleep. If your child is more active, an Ocean View Stateroom still offers the view but with more peace of mind. If you splurge on a spacious suite, everyone will have more room to rest and roam – and get access to VIP areas of the ship – along with concierge and butler service. Suite accommodations also offer a private babysitting service for up to three children (for a fee), as long as the kids are all at least 1 year of age.

Celebrity offers several programs for younger children. Toddler Time is available in the ship's playroom for all kids younger than 3 and requires parental supervision – and you can check out the fun and educational toys and books to take to your stateroom. Led by the ship's youth staff, the daily Camp at Sea program is an option for potty-trained kids ages 3 to 5. Camp activities include science excursions, art activities, singing and cooking challenges. Children aged 3 to 12 who are registered in the youth program can join in for more activities with supervised afternoon and slumber parties on the ship.

Fussy young eaters will find plenty of kid-friendly favorites at mealtime like spaghetti Bolognese, mini pizzas, cheeseburgers and fries; these are some of the selections on the main dining room's kids menu. The buffet is an excellent alternative for a relaxed environment and even more choices – including an ice cream and dessert station for those sweet tooths. If you prefer to dine in your stateroom, kiddie favorites are also available on the in-room dining menu.

Minimum sailing age: Infants cruising on Holland America Line must be at least 6 months old at the time of embarkation. On longer cruises, such as transoceanic voyages or itineraries in South America , Asia , the South Pacific or Hawaii, infants must be at least 12 months at embarkation.

Holland America offers a selection of accommodations ideal for families that include connecting cabins and rooms with sofa beds or Murphy beds. On the Nieuw Statendam and Koningsdam ships, there are also dedicated family staterooms with beds for up to five guests, additional closet space and two bathrooms (one of which has a tub). The line also offers reduced fares for kids – who can even cruise for free on select itineraries during Holland America's Kids Sail Free promotions.

A limited number of complimentary cribs, highchairs and booster seats are available on board. The line recommends requesting a crib no later than 90 days before sailing. If you don't want to bring all the necessary supplies with you, select items can be purchased in advance, including diapers, baby wipes, formula and baby food.

Parents will appreciate the kids menu in the dining venues, with toddler-approved favorites like chicken strips, pizza, and mac and cheese, along with healthy options like soups, salads and fresh fruit. Children 12 years and younger receive half-off meals in specialty dining restaurants – or they can order from the kids menu for free – and you'll find reduced rates for the kiddos on shore excursions.

Club HAL, the line's youth program, is available on all 11 ships and offers supervised and entertaining activities for ages 3 to 17. At the Kids Program (for 3- to 6-year-olds), children can participate in games and crafts and attend themed parties like a "Ships Ahoy Pirate Treasure Hunt Adventure" or "Dino-Mite Night." The program, along with lunch, is an option on port days. The line also encourages children with special needs to participate in Club HAL activities based on their chronological age.

Minimum sailing age: Infants must be 6 months of age at the time of sailing on Norwegian Cruise Line , or at least 12 months old at embarkation if the voyage has three or more consecutive days at sea.

Norwegian's "freestyle cruising" philosophy provides parents options to design a vacation that will be flexible and fun for everyone in the family. Choices abound for staterooms and suites, including connecting cabins. The Haven, the line's exclusive luxury retreat, offers spacious accommodations, suites and villas – even a two-bedroom family villa. The Haven also boasts private venues, a concierge service, a 24-hour butler and other perks. During promotions on select sailings – and in all stateroom categories – kids can sail for free .

Complimentary portable playpens and foldable sleepers are available fleetwide. You'll also find highchairs in the dining venues, but booster seats are only available on Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore.

For activities, the line's Guppies Program is for tiny tykes ranging from 6 months to 3 years old. This hosted activity (on all ships) is open to parents and their children, focusing on sensory play, music and movement. Parents of children aged 3 to 12, meanwhile, can head out for an afternoon in port – or a night alone on the ship – and leave their children with the supervised Late Night/Port Play program for a fee. For more active pursuits, parents and their kids can check out the aquaparks and waterslides, play a game of mini-golf, or go on exciting and adventurous excursions, such as a whale watching expedition on a cruise to Alaska .

Throughout the ship guests will find complimentary dining venues, like the main dining rooms and buffet, where kids can enjoy tasty favorites like pizza, chicken fingers, pasta, waffles and soft serve ice cream. Minimum sailing age: Infants must be 6 months of age at the time of embarkation to sail with Carnival Cruise Line . For transoceanic crossings, remote itineraries and any cruise with more than two consecutive sea days, children must be at least 12 months of age. They also must be at least 12 months to sail if there's at least one international port ( Singapore , the Pacific Islands or New Zealand ) or a port in Hawaii.

Carnival offers connecting cabins and flexible staterooms that can accommodate up to five guests – some also have an extra half bath. If you're cruising from Long Beach, California , to the Mexican Riviera with the kiddos, plan to reserve one of the 96 Family Harbor staterooms or suites in the family-dedicated zone on Deck 2 of Carnival Panorama. These cabins accommodate up to five passengers and feature a nautical flag motif. Additionally, the Family Harbor Lounge is the perfect place to hang out with your little ones: The space has large televisions, hosted family activities, complimentary snacks – like milk and cookies or ice cream – and other amenities. You'll also be able to grab continental breakfast in the lounge on port days. Family Harbor suites and staterooms are also available on Carnival Celebration, Mardi Gras and Carnival Vista. While on board, parents can request a complimentary crib to use in the stateroom, and there are highchairs and booster seats available in the dining venues. Strollers are available to rent for a fee.

When it comes to activities, Camp Ocean has programs for infants younger than 2, with limited availability on sea days during the cruise. Children do not need to be toilet-trained to participate. Parents can leave their tots in the care of the ship's youth staff for a fee, or they can stay and use the camp facilities free of charge. On port days, child care is also available (at additional cost), but parents must return at mealtimes to feed their children – or to administer any medications. Children who are 2 years of age can join in the kiddie fun in the Penguin group for ages 2 to 5, which offers complimentary programming with entertaining age-appropriate activities and kid-friendly cuisine. In the evenings, infants 6 months and older – and children up to age 11 – may attend Night Owls (for a fee), a late-night supervised slumber party-type activity where tots can watch movies, play games, listen to music, participate in giveaways and enjoy snacks. Note, however, that they must be at least 12 months old for certain cruises/cruisetours such as transatlantic and transpacific voyages, Hawaii cruises and select South American itineraries. Children are required to be at least 12 months old for any cruise with three or more consecutive sea days.

Royal Caribbean has a wide range of staterooms and suites appropriate for all sizes and types of families, but for an epic adventure, book the Ultimate Family Suite. This two-story accommodation is available on three of the line's ships, including Wonder of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's newest ship – and the largest ship in the world. Suite amenities feature a private game room and cinema, table tennis, an in-suite slide and VIP perks around the ship; you'll even have your own dedicated Royal Genie. For shorter itineraries closer to home, consider booking one of the line's Freedom-class vessels sailing from ports in Florida , Texas and New Jersey .

Take advantage of the line's Babies 2 Go service to make packing light and easy for your cruise. This program will deliver Huggies diapers, baby wipes and cream, and Gerber organic baby food to your stateroom. The items must be ordered in advance.

Royal Caribbean's Royal Babies program (for ages 6 to 18 months) offers little ones and their parents enriching classes in child development. Royal Tots features 45-minute interactive playground sessions for children aged 16 to 36 months. The ship's youth staff hosts these programs; parents must attend alongside their infants or toddlers. If your little one is between 3 and 5 years old – and potty-trained – they can participate in the educational program as an Aquanaut at Adventure Ocean. With this program, kids take part in fun experiments to become a Certified Jr. Adventure Scientist. These programs are complimentary for guests.

If you want to dine early with your kiddos and avoid the crowds in the main dining room, My Family Time Dining is available for kids ages 3 to 11 during the first seating. After dinner, they can head to Adventure Ocean for nighttime kid fun while their parents have an adults-only evening to explore the entertainment on board – or off the ship.

Minimum sailing age: Princess Cruises requires infants be at least 6 months or older on embarkation day and at least 1 year old for remote itineraries and transoceanic crossings. Children must be at least 5 years of age to participate in an escorted cruisetour.

Princess ships have plenty of staterooms that will accommodate up to four guests. The line also offers connecting cabins and two-bedroom suites for a family of up to eight that boast additional living space, a balcony and two bathrooms (one with a full tub). If you need a portable crib, you can call the line or reserve one in advance through the Cruise Personalizer.

Kids aged 3 and older (who must be potty-trained) can participate independently in Camp Discovery, a hosted complimentary program during the day and evening. Late-night group babysitting is also available at Camp Discovery for a small hourly fee, so parents can drop off their children and enjoy a quiet date night or some "me" time. Families can also delight in onboard entertainment such as stargazing with Discovery at SEA, kid-friendly films during Movies Under the Stars, festivals, dining events and more.

Kids menus are available in the main dining rooms and in specialty restaurants, where children receive half-price meals. Complimentary stage 1 and 2 jarred baby food can be ordered in advance through the Cruise Personalizer. You can also request fresh pureed fruits and vegetables in the main dining room.

Tips for Cruising with Babies and Toddlers

• Book a short cruise: Celebrity Cruises' blog advises booking a shorter itinerary when cruising with babies and toddlers – especially until little sailors learn the ropes and get their sea legs.
• Choose a local port: You might also consider an itinerary departing from a port closer to home so you can drive there – and look for kid-friendly itineraries that offer age-appropriate excursions.
• Cruise during the off-season: If your schedule is flexible, book your vacation during the off-season or shoulder season, which will vary depending on your destination. Cruise fares are typically lower , and the kids facilities won't be as crowded when the older children are in school.
• Pack essentials in your carry-on: Keep anything you'll need the day of embarkation – food, diapers, pacifiers, swimsuits, a change or two of clothing, etc. – in your carry-on bag . Your checked luggage may not be available to you until later in the day. Carry-on luggage can include a rollaboard bag, diaper bag or backpack , the latter of which will also be useful for shore excursions.
• Pack plenty of diapers: Both regular and swim diapers are essential for your cruise packing list . Pack more than enough diapers as most cruise ships do not carry them (and even if they do, it's not guaranteed they'll sell the size your child needs). If available in a port of call, diaper options may be limited and/or more expensive.
• Pack baby food: Formula isn't widely available on cruise ships, and because there are so many varieties (and so many babies with particularities), it's best to bring the formula your baby enjoys at home. Even though some cruise lines will puree baby food, you'll still want your own for shore excursions (even those on the cruise lines' private islands ). It's also a good idea to confirm the cruise line serves the type of milk your toddler drinks.
• Pack bottles and bottle accessories: Some cruise lines offer bottle warmers and sterilizers, though they are few – and you may feel more comfortable packing a bottle brush and portable warmer anyway.
• Reserve baby items ahead of time: Most of the lines have portable cribs (such as Pack 'n Plays), travel strollers , and highchairs or booster seats that you can use, and it's best to reserve these items in advance. Depending on the cruise line, you may be able to order other essentials ahead of time as well.
• Consider travel insurance: Life is unpredictable – especially when you have a little one. You might want to consider cruise insurance or a cancel-for-any-reason travel policy for emergency protections and peace of mind during your vacation.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

Live performances and musicals give each night a magical feel, while karaoke, trivia, and Disney character meet and greets ensure every minute aboard is exciting.

I’m here to help you make this all-important choice by reviewing 12 of the best cruise ships for kids.

1. Disney Dream

Disney magic comes to life on the Disney Dream, an enchanting cruise experience.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

Treat them to Vanellope’s Sweets, a candy shop with walls of candy as far as the eye can see. Disney entertainment comes to the big stages as only this brand can, with costumed characters singing, dancing, and entertaining guests all day or evening.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Kids will fall in love with the Wonder Playscape, which offers puzzles, games, climbing walls, and slides. Pool decks throughout will let you take a much-needed load off.

Perhaps you and the family are brave enough to try the 10-story Ultimate Abyss water slide!

Some staterooms overlook the majesty of the sea, and others have a virtual balcony. All rooms include Wi-Fi, spa features, and room service.

3. Disney Magic

You have so many ways to experience the wonder of a Disney Cruise Line vacation, including the Disney Magic.

This inviting ship is the home of D Lounge, the family-friendly hangout zone with dance parties, games, and hours upon hours of fun.

The kids can manage the Avengers during the Avenger’s Academy ride, visit the Mickey Mouse Club, receive a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (knights for boys and princesses for girls), or ride dizzying, spiraling water slides.

The nautical-themed staterooms are cozy and spacious for families, and split bathrooms, portholes, and private verandas also set the mood.

4. Symphony of the Seas

Calling itself “The Sound of Wonder,” the Symphony of the Seas through the Royal Caribbean is new and improved for families.

Hit up Sugar Beach and buy some candy, ride three water slides in one on The Perfect Storm, or learn to hang ten on the FlowRider. You’ll spend the days in the most fun ways possible.

Wonderland has whimsical food the kids will go gaga over. There are cocktails for the parents that are just as inspired.

Snuggle up to the Ultimate Family Suite, which boasts a private game room, a hot tub, table tennis facilities, and karaoke.

5. Mardi Gras

Carnival’s Mardi Gras is one of its latest and greatest creations, so you should expect the ultimate in entertainment.

Take a ride on the Bolt sea coaster for some exciting thrills. You can also spend a sunny day at the WaterWorks water park with a dumping bucket and countless water slides, then close out the day by seeing a show. It’s all waiting for you.

The Family Harbor Staterooms in the Family Harbor Lounge is where you need to be. Kids eat free at most restaurants in the lounge, and you can take advantage of entertainment like board games and movies. Babysitting is also available. 

6. MSC Meraviglia

Departing from Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, set sail for a world of adventure aboard the MSG Meraviglia. This ship sails to New England and Canada and delights the entire voyage.  

Stroll through the 315-foot Galleria Meraviglia promenade, shopping, grabbing a bite to eat, or simply enjoying the beauty of it all.

Dive into the Horizon pool, which is open day and night (although there are dances and parties at night, so maybe visit sans kids).

Your kids will adore the F1 simulators, full-sized bowling alley, sportsplex, and Polar Aquapark with its sloping, looping enclosed slides.

Mini and Juniors Clubs give the kids a safe and fun place to play if you need to drop them off, as the rooms are bright, colorful, and full of toys.

7. Disney Wish

The Disney Cruise Line collection has recently expanded, adding Disney Wish to the ever-growing fleet. This ship has some claims to fame you’ll only find here, such as theatrical Frozen or Avengers -themed dining experiences.

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

8. Carnival Panorama

Set sail to the Transpacific and Mexico on the Carnival Panorama through a Carnival Cruise Line. The 1,055-foot ship that weighs over 133,000 tons will put the whole family in a festive mood.

Laugh until you cry at The Punchliner Comedy Club, which also offers entertainment for adults.

The Carnival Panorama has plenty of Dr. Suess-themed entertainment the young ones will love, such as Dr. Suess Bookville, the Suess-a-palooza Parade, the Suess-a-palooza Story Time, and the Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast.

Zumbini is a Zumba class for kids two to five that will have their little bodies moving and grooving. There’s also a Night Owls overnight stay for the children, which is like one big sleepover!

9. Allure of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International invites families to sail away on the Allure of the Seas, an award-winning ship for family entertainment.

Included with your stay are kids and teen programs and access to the H2O Zone Water Park. The park boasts waterfalls, water cannons, pools, and sculptures the kids can climb. Geysers send water high into the sky, splashing down and refreshing your children all afternoon.

Dry off and play table tennis, ride a zipline, partake in an interactive game show, or watch an outdoor movie under the stars in the pool. The projector screen is 220 feet so there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

10. Norwegian Joy

The Norwegian Joy starts in the Mexican Riviera and wraps up its journey at the Panama Canal but alternately travels from Miami to the Caribbean. The ship is nearly 1,100 feet long and weighs more than 160,000 tons, so she’s quite heavy.

Fostering family togetherness on a ship like the Norwegian Joy is simple. You can take the twists and turns behind the wheel of the Joy Speedway, play a heart-thumping game of laser tag, or tee off at mini golf.

There’s so much more here. The Galaxy Pavilion offers a thrilling race-themed dark ride. Get your kicks at the Aqua Park, a water park for tweens and teens. The Norwegian Joy even has a Kids’ Aqua Park for the little ones.

11. Celebrity Equinox

Make your next family vacation something truly special on the Celebrity Equinox through the Celebrity Cruise Line. Deck 15 has all the amenities a family needs.

For instance, you and the kids can learn how to blow glass at the Hot Glass Studio, which is not something you see on every cruise ship.

How about some croquet or bocce on the Lawn Club? The kids’ club will watch your children between three and 12, offering lunch, dinner, and overnight stays if needed, and the ship even offers babysitting services in your cabin.

12. Norwegian Encore

Most cruise lines don’t have kid or family programs and some outright don’t allow kids under 18, though Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways have partnered to offer river cruising for families (more on that later).

And finally, expedition cruises take adventure-seekers to curious and far-flung destinations like the Arctic, Antarctica , the Galapagos , and the Amazon. Expedition boats are much smaller than ocean liners, and the offerings on board are usually more tailored to history and education on expedition cruises .

Disney Cruise Line is at the top of this list because it does a really fantastic job of catering to every member of the family. It has managed to bring the magic of Disney theme parks to the middle of the ocean — even the fireworks shows.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords .

Sailings feature character experiences just like at the Disney theme parks. You’ll also find live shows, a spa, nightclubs, and lounges. Camp at Sea is Celebrity Cruises’ kids’ club for kids 3 to 17 years old. Camp is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is broken into 4 age groups. Activities range from arts and crafts for the youngest age group to video game tournaments, scavenger hunts, and movie nights for older kids.

Family-friendly excursions include cultural tours, water sports, volcano and glacier hikes, and swimming with dolphins.

There are 4 classes of cruise ships offered by Celebrity Cruises: Edge Class (its newest and most innovative), Solstice Class, Millenium Class, and Galapagos Vessels.

With the National Geographic Global Explorers program, kids and teens get hands-on experience collecting and analyzing samples, learn how to take field notes, and even learn how to take slow-motion and timelapse videos to document their findings. Lindblad Expeditions ships carry as few as 28 guests and at most 148. As such, cabins and suites vary across the company’s fleet of ships. It’s a little difficult to find out on your own which suites would accommodate more than 2 people or if you can get connecting cabins, though they do exist, as well as standard double-occupancy suites. 1. Best Carnival Cruise Ship for Kids: Carnival Panorama

Launched in December, 2019, the  Carnival Panorama  provides a good bang for your vacation buck, and is the first Carnival ship to depart from Long Beach, California, in 20 years. Stops on its Mexican Riviera itineraries include Puerto Vallarta , Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan .

There’s fun for all onboard, including a water park with a tube slide, spiral slide, tipping bucket and splash park. Pedal your way around SkyRide, a new suspended cycling experience with panoramic views of the ocean. Bowling, mini-golf, basketball and Ping-Pong make for an amusing family time. You can catch a concert, movie or sporting event on the big screen at Carnival’s Seaside Theater or try your hand at Hasbro, The Game Show , a live stage show in which participants can play adaptations of Hasbro’s popular games , such as Connect Four Shots basketball game , for prizes.

Carnival’s Camp Ocean is like summer camp on a ship, with crafts, dancing and games all supervised by enthusiastic counselors. There are Dr. Seuss -themed activities, a reading area, and parade onboard. Teenagers can meet new friends and chill out in exclusive teen zones. Lip Synch Battle: Carnival,  one of the best shows at sea , is your crew’s chance to go on stage to showcase your singing chops and dance moves. Rockin’ new live shows and a comedy club that includes family-friendly performances ensure no one will be bored.

Fast, flavorful and fun dining options are available for families aboard the Carnival Panorama. Kids will love the burgers and fries served at Guy’s Burger Joint, as well as the Shake Spot and pizzeria. A New England-inspired Seafood Shack and Asian kitchen, as well as Mexican and Italian eateries, provide a diverse variety of cuisines.

2. Best Princess Cruise Ship for Kids: Caribbean Princess  

Princess Cruises are a great choice for multi-generational family travel as they feature amenities and activities to please the smallest to the tallest members of your group. A quarter-sized, complimentary wearable device makes vacation even more relaxing by speeding up the boarding process and enabling you to order refreshments that find you. This ship typically departs Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for the Caribbean, but also offers Canada and New England sailings.

Caribbean Princess also debuted The Reef Family Splash zone in the summer of 2019. One of the best water parks at sea , this water play pad, pool, Jacuzzi, lounge and bar area is the perfect place for families to enjoy sunshine or shade with kid-friendly mocktails in hand. Winnie the Whale water feature sprays from her spout as children splash in delight. The Game Zone includes oversized backyard games such as cornhole . Movies, music and live entertainment can be found around the ship.

Stanley the Bear, Princess’ cuddly mascot, appears for storytime and a special breakfast that includes pancakes stacked in the shape of a bear. Jr. CHEF@Sea is a hands-on cooking workshop for kids ages 8 to 12. Junior chefs get to don aprons and hats and decorate a cake with a member of the ship’s pastry team in the main galley.

This cruise ship for kids includes dining experiences that are at a higher level than your average “cruise food.” There is the decadent Chocolate Journeys to satisfy the biggest sweet tooth and a few add-on dining experiences are available as well. Caribbean Princess offers 87 connecting staterooms, as well as two-bedroom family suites, featuring the line’s exclusive Princess Luxury Bed, developed in partnership with a sleep expert.

3. Best Disney Cruise Ship for Kids: Disney Fantasy

Disney Cruise Line is a favorite for families, and has the awards to prove it. While all of the Disney ships were built with creating magical memories in mind, Disney Fantasy currently takes the cake as the best cruise ship for kids because of its seven-night sailings from Florida to the Caribbean and Mexico.

All Disney ships feature themed parties, such as a Pirates in the Caribbean dance party, where pirate costumes are encouraged and the only fireworks at sea blast off overhead. You’re sure to encounter Disney characters and movies throughout the ships. Holiday times are unforgettable with Halloween on the High Seas and Very Merrytime winter wonderland festivities. The Bibbiddi Bobbidi Boutique transforms children into princesses, pirates, sea captains and knights.

On select Fantasy sailings, guest can partake in Star Wars Day at Sea, which includes character sightings, Star Wars movies playing by the pool, themed activities and even special Star Wars food and drinks on the menus. If you’d like to don your Hans Solo garb or Storm Trooper costume , an atrium costume party is the perfect place to bring on the fun in full force.

Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Ocean Lab are connected areas that kids ages 3 to 12 can explore, supervised by experienced counselors. Imaginations come alive in Andy’s Room from Toy Story , where toy soldiers might march in at any minute and conduct boot camp. Star Wars: Command Post, MARVEL Super Hero Academy and Pixie Hollow themed areas encourage kids to have incredible adventures. There’s even a nursery for the littlest of vacationers, a coffee shop for teens, and a space for tweens to sing karaoke, play video games and make new friends.

Children will love testing their sleuthing skills in the Midship Detective Agency, which sends them on an interactive ship-wide caper to crack a case of whodunit. Disney imagineers put a ton of magic into the ships, thinking through every modern and whimsical detail, including enchanted artwork that transforms in front of your eyes.

Every sailing on the Disney Fantasy includes a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island in The Bahamas, where turquoise waters meet soft, white sand. Splash on the Pelican’s Plunge waterslides, snorkel to uncover undersea treasures, run the Castaway Cay 5k or just float your cares away by the sand bar with a Frozen -themed drink in hand. Supervised children’s activities like digging for artificial whale bones, an adults-only beach and a teens-only excursion ensure every member of the family has a memorable day at Castaway Cay.

Disney ships feature the splashtastic AquaDuck water coaster, Mickey-shaped pools, water play areas, Goofy’s Sports Deck, the Walt Disney Theater with Broadway-caliber shows , and the D Lounge with family game shows and karaoke. Even dinner includes a show with immersive storytelling at the Animator’s Palate, where Crush from Finding Nemo   encourages all dudes dining to sing and interact with him. Your own drawings can come to life in Animation Magic.

Parents should make reservations for Palo or Remy, adults-only fine dining restaurants well worth their added fees. Remy’s French menu is planned by two different, high-caliber chefs while Palo features Northern Italian cuisine. The chocolate soufflé at Palo is simply to die for and the perfect ending to your unlimited meal. Disney Fantasy also features several pubs and cocktail lounges for parents to enjoy adult time together while the kids are at play.

Even the staterooms have family conveniences in mind, such as separate toilet and shower rooms.

4. Best Celebrity Cruise Ship for Kids: Celebrity Equinox

Celebrity Cruises is an award-winning, premium cruise line known for their personal service, upscale design and luxurious cuisine. All Celebrity ships are welcoming to families, but Celebrity Equinox offers especially engaging programs for children and other curious cruisers. (Parents and grandparents can participate, too.) Most Equinox itineraries include sailings to the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, but there are also sailings that include Mexico and New Orleans.

Camp at Sea is Celebrity’s customizable kids’ programming that’s full of enriching activities that inspire children to learn more about the world around them. Developed in partnership with Lonely Planet, Fat Brain Toys and Xbox , aspiring artists, scientists, and chefs can partake in special activities catered to their interests. Youth Counselors ensure all children are entertained and engaged. STEM at Sea with Frost Science Museum launched on Equinox and includes Power of Plankton and Mission Microplastics that not only educate, but also inspire positive choices for the planet.

Celebrity Cruises recently added more than 70 new excursions to their offerings, with amily-focused activities such as snorkeling and wildlife viewing. Aboard the ship, families favor the sports courts, pools and Lawn Club, where you can lounge with the “grass” beneath your feet, play bocce, croquet or listen to a concert. Silent disco parties, hot glass classes, archery, movies under the stars and cupcake decorating are some of the other activities kids and parents can enjoy together.

Morning, lunch, dinner and sleepover parties allow parents to secure some alone time while children play with peers and counselors for an additional per hour, per child fee. Autism-friendly ship environments include sensory-friendly films, toy lending, special dietary accommodations, and counselors whom are trained in autism awareness.

Family celebrations get even easier aboard Celebrity Cruises, too. The Celebrity staff will take care of all the details for your birthday, graduation or family reunion. Ten dining options, from sophisticated to casual, ensure every member of the family finds something that pleases their palate. In-room dining and main dining menus include kids’ favorites, such as grilled cheese and spaghetti, as well as fun additions, like PB&J sundaes. Canyon Ranch spa even offers special teen services, including hair straightening lessons, sensitive skin facials and personal training sessions.

5. Best Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship for Kids: Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas

Royal Caribbean features some of the biggest ships in the world with some of the most thrilling activities for families. Oasis of the Seas recently underwent a $165-million transformation to include even more adventures and modern amenities that will keep your crew smiling from port to port. Splash the day away on the Caribbean-inspired pool deck, aqua park and three waterslides. You can climb two rock walls, zipline across deck nine, try your best to stand tall on twin FlowRider surf simulators, and squeal your way down The Ultimate Abyss 10-story slide.

Oasis of the Seas sailings depart Miami for the Caribbean through May 2020; after that, Oasis of the Seas will head to  New York City  and become one of the largest ships to sail from the Big Apple. Seven-night cruises to The Bahamas include a Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean’s private island that features a huge water park with the tallest slide in North America and Chill Island, where you can bliss out by the warm, turquoise waters.

Seven neighborhoods aboard this ship transport you to places like Central Park for open-air walks amongst greenery and around lively restaurants, and Boardwalk, which is reminiscent of Coney Island, featuring a carousel, games and a dessert shop. Shows at the AquaTheater enthrall cruisers with high-diving, acrobatics, aerial tricks and other exuberating antics. Families love the glow-in-the-dark laser tag, escape room (for older children), mini-golf and ice skating.

More than 20 dining options are offered onboard, including BBQ, Mexican, and a sports bar with an arcade. Karaoke, live music and a bar with two robot bartenders slinging drinks keep the good times rolling on this cruise ship for kids.

Reimagined children’s areas are interactive and organized by activity type and age groups, including a nursery for the littlest of cruisers and teen areas that can be accessed through a “hidden” entrance. Teenagers will enjoy gaming, movies, music and a new outdoor deck just for them.

6. Best MSC Cruise Ship for Kids: MSC Seaside

MSC Cruises is a family-owned cruise line that’s focused on making it easy for families to explore the world. Learn new languages, cultures and cooking skills in immersive onboard programming and interact with people from all over the globe. MSC Seaside is one of the best cruise ships for kids because it sails year-round to the Caribbean from Miami.

MSC Seaside features modular connected staterooms (connect up to three to accommodate up to 10 people), an interactive aqua park with four waterslides, a splash zone and adventure trail ropes course. High-tech fun includes a Formula 1 simulator and XD Cinema, which catapults you inside the film you’re watching. Two of the longest ziplines at sea whisk guests away at 344 feet, or you can strike it big at the two full-size bowling lanes.

There are six distinct kids areas on board MSC Seaside. Developed in partnership with Chicco and featuring the latest Chicco baby equipment , supplies and toys , MSC Baby Time features a space where babies up to age 3 can play with their parents in a separate baby care drop-off area. LEGO bricks are a big part of the fun in the Mini Club for kids ages 3 to 6 and the Junior Club, for 7 to 11-year-olds, which also offers video games . Tweens and teens also have their own spaces.

DOREMI Studio is a lounge for families to dance disco and show off their talents together. There are also other DOREMI family activities, interactive games and sports. LEGO Experience Day is your crew’s opportunity to meet Sailor Walkabout, the LEGO mascot, and earn an official LEGO Junior Master Builder Diploma. Cutting-edge equipment like 3D printers and VR Gaming are also fun for kids. Happy Dinners, where children are escorted to the kids’ club after they finish their meals, enable parents to enjoy their food without feeling rushed by antsy little ones.

New MSC private island destination, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, debuted in November 2019. With the goal of being a sustainable destination where guests can connect with surrounding nature, it offers eight gorgeous beaches with sparkling blue waters and shore excursions like snorkel safaris, kayak tours and paddleboarding. Kids and their families can learn about and appreciate nature in activities that investigate marine life, coral reefs and more.

7 Best Cruise Lines for Babies and Toddlers

Planning a cruise with your precious munchkins? No need to fret about the logistics—this guide will be your go-to resource for discovering the best cruise lines for babies and toddlers! 

While certain kid-friendly cruise lines cater primarily to families with kids three and older, others pamper their tiniest guests with a wealth of programs and amenities. These include nurseries, complimentary cribs and strollers, baby-friendly Splash Zone areas, and more.

1. Carnival Cruise Line

Minimum Sailing Age

For most Carnival Cruise Line voyages, children must be at least six months old upon embarkation. However, for transoceanic crossings and remote itineraries involving more than two consecutive sea days, children must be at least one year old.

Amenities Available

Cribs are offered and should be reserved when booking. High chairs and booster seats are available in shipboard dining rooms and restaurants. Single strollers can be rented on Carnival ships, subject to availability. 

Sadly, diapers, baby supplies, baby food, and formula aren’t available on board, so parents should bring these items with them.

On a related note, it’s worth mentioning that some Carnival ships feature non-stocked mini bar units. Parents can ask the ship staff to refrigerate medicine and formula upon request if needed.

Tots and Family Programs

Carnival’s Camp Ocean features a free Penguins children’s program with a full schedule of daily fun activities for kids ages two to five. 

Children don’t need potty training to participate, but parents must supply diapers and toiletries. 

Camp Ocean also offers special play times for “Under 2s.” Parents/guardians can leave their child in the care of the Camp Ocean Youth Staff for a fee during these play times or stay and play with their little ones free of charge.

Carnival provides various family programs for guests with young children on every cruise, including the widely enjoyed Seuss at Sea activities across its fleet. 

Some ships, like the Carnival Cruise Line’s Mardi Gras, also include Dr. Seuss Bookville, a dedicated family reading venue.

Babysitting for Babies & Toddlers

Since in-stateroom babysitting isn’t an option on Carnival ships, parents may want to explore the ship’s designated kids’ activities. 

One of these activities is the Camp Ocean’s Night Owls program, available for children aged six months to 11 years. This program takes place inside the Camp Ocean facility and includes various activities such as movie time, arts and crafts, toys, video games, snacks, and more.

Participating children don’t need to be potty-trained, but parents need to supply diapers and toiletries.

2. Celebrity Cruises

To embark on Celebrity Cruises, children must meet the age requirement of at least six months at the time of embarkation. 

The minimum age requirement is one year for transatlantic, transpacific, Hawaii, certain South American cruises, and other selected cruises and cruise tours featuring three or more consecutive days at sea. 

For families traveling with infants, specific accommodations are made available on request. Playpens can be secured by making advanced reservations, and high chairs can be provided upon request. Guests can request baby food up to 30 days before embarkation.

Like the Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises doesn’t offer strollers, formula, diapers, and other baby supplies. Families can use the in-room mini-bar for storage, but parents should ensure that it reaches a safe temperature for formula, food, and other perishable items.

Children under three can participate in Celebrity’s free daily Toddler Time activities with a parent or guardian. Activities include interactive play sessions, age-appropriate games, and creative activities designed to engage and entertain toddlers. 

Kids don’t need to be potty-trained to participate in Toddler Time; lavatory-based changing tables and baby wipes are provided. 

Celebrity Cruises also offers a Fat Brain Toy Lending Program, allowing families to borrow engaging and educational toys during their cruise. If a toy captures the child’s interest, families can check it out from Camp at Sea.

Private, in-suite babysitting services are offered for Celebrity’s suite guests only, subject to availability. Fees apply, and requests must be made at least 24 hours before. Up to three children at least one year old may participate per family. 

On port days, at least one parent/legal guardian must accompany their child under supervision. No other in-stateroom or group babysitting services are offered for children under three years of age.

3. Cunard Line

The Cunard Line allows parents to bring infants as young as six months on board their ships. The minimum sailing age is one year for Full World Cruises, Exotic Cruises, or Transatlantic Crossings. 

Cribs, cots, and high chairs are available. Loaner baby baths and other essential amenities such as baby food, bottle warmers, and sterilizers can be provided upon request. All Cunard staterooms feature small refrigerators to store perishable items. 

Strollers, diapers, and baby supplies aren’t available onboard.

Cunard provides a complimentary Night Nursery service for children aged six months up to two years from 6 to 11 p.m. For added convenience and reassurance, parents receive a pager to keep them connected in case their child needs attention. 

Children aged two to seven years can enjoy Cunard’s complimentary Play Zone supervised by Youth Staff. The Play Zone area offers books, toys, and a variety of activities—everything a curious child needs to keep them entertained. 

Cunard’s Night Nursery group babysitting is available. No in-stateroom babysitting is offered.

4. Disney Cruise Line

For most Disney Cruise Line sailings, children must be a minimum of six months old upon embarkation. However, the minimum age requirement for transatlantic and Panama Canal itineraries is one year old at the time of embarkation.

Disney Cruise Line ships provide complimentary cribs and playpens upon request, subject to availability. High chairs and a limited number of complimentary strollers are also available. 

The cruise line offers bathtubs and in-room refrigerators, and it can supply bottle warmers and bottle sterilizers if desired. Diapers, ready-to-feed infant formula, bottles, baby food, and baby supplies can be purchased onboard all ships.

Staff in the main dining rooms can prepare fresh, pureed vegetables, which can also be ordered through room service.

In addition to the nursery childcare center (which we’ll discuss in the next section), Disney Cruise Line presents “Toddler Time” sessions for parents and their little ones.

Children under three years old also have the opportunity to explore Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab alongside their parents during designated Open House hours. 

Families with tots can enjoy many fun, family-focused activities, as well. All Disney Cruise Line ships feature water play areas for little ones under three, where swim diapers are allowed.

On most itineraries, Disney Cruise Line features the “It’s a Small World” nursery childcare center, catering to children between six months and three years of age. On transatlantic and Panama Canal sailings, this facility is available for children aged one to three years. 

The nursery provides children with a safe and engaging environment, with dozens of toys, books, and activities. Counselors will feed and change little ones, but parents must provide supplies. 

Note: To secure a spot, parents can make reservations online. Fees apply. In-stateroom babysitting services aren’t available.

5. MSC Cruises

There is no minimum age to sail on an MSC Cruise ship .

High chairs and strollers are available on ships, and cribs are provided upon request. 

MSC Cruises guests have access to free bottle warmers, baby carriers, backpacks, and bouncy chairs through MSC’s partnership with Chicco, a global baby brand. 

Baby food and formula aren’t offered onboard, but in-room refrigerators are available.

Kids under three can get together and play with the latest Chicco toys during MSC Baby Time sessions when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

MSC Seaside’s Baby Club for tots under three years of age is the largest on any MSC cruise ship. MSC provides fun programs with Chicco toys for babies and toddlers, including Rhythm and Music, Mini Olympic Games, Let’s Speak English, and more. 

MSC Cruises also offers dozens of family activities for guests sailing with little ones to participate in together.

MSC Babycare Service provides free babysitting by dedicated staff for kids from 12 months to under three years old. This drop-off service is offered during limited hours while ships sail and when parents disembark for a shore excursion. 

Parents must book at least one day in advance to use this service. Availability is limited, so advanced reservations are a must. 

MSC Cruises doesn’t have in-stateroom babysitting.

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

Children must be at least six months old when they embark on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship . For voyages with three or more consecutive days at sea, the minimum age requirement is at least one year old at the time of sailing.

Portable playpens/foldable sleepers are supplied on request. High chairs are provided, and booster seats are also offered on some ships. 

Diapers and wipes can be pre-purchased. 

Strollers, baby food, and formula aren’t available. In-room refrigerators are provided in staterooms to accommodate two or more guests.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Splash Academy youth program features a Guppies area for kids from six months up to age three, providing sensory play activities and games for parents and kids to enjoy together. 

A parent or guardian must remain with their child during these hosted activity sessions. Open play times in the Guppies room are offered, as well. 

Tots in swim diapers can enjoy special Splash Zone areas featured on some Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

Babysitting for Babies and Toddlers

Norwegian Escape’s fee-based Guppies Nursery provides care for kids from six months to under three years. Parents are given a handy phone to stay in touch onboard the ship.

Advanced reservations must be made with the Nursery Attendant. The Guppies Nursery staff will change children’s diapers, but parents must provide all supplies. 

No other Norwegian Cruise Line ships offer private or group babysitting services for children under three years of age.

7. Royal Caribbean International

Children must be at least six months old when embarking on a Royal Caribbean ship . 

For specific voyages, such as transatlantic, transpacific, Hawaii, and certain South American itineraries, the minimum age is at least one year old at the time of embarkation.

Royal Caribbean provides baby cribs upon request, and a limited number of high chairs and booster seats are available on each ship. 

Baby diapers and some baby supplies can be purchased and delivered to guests’ staterooms. 

Strollers aren’t available on Royal Caribbean ships. A limited number of in-room refrigerators are available, so make reservations in advance.

Babies and toddlers can enjoy educational, fun activities on Royal Caribbean ships at Adventure Ocean’s complimentary Royal Babies (ages six to 18 months) and Royal Tots (ages 18 to 36 months) interactive playgroups hosted by trained youth staff.

Little tots in swim diapers can play in specially designed Royal Caribbean Baby Splash Zone areas available on some ships.

Reservations are required, and the available time slots vary, so reserve these in advance.

The following are a few of the new Disney Wish exclusives for kids.

The AquaMouse is a new water slide-type attraction on Disney Wish. The 760-foot slide takes guests on a journey through the world of Mickey Mouse shorts, with lighting, special effects, and more surprises along the way. The two-minute-long ride is twice as long as the AquaDuck, making it a must-do for any Disney fan.

Booking restrictions.

Some cruise lines do have restrictions for travelers looking to book a sailing if they are younger than 21. For instance, Royal Caribbean sets the minimum age to sail unaccompanied by an adult on cruises from North America at 21. (You only need to be 18 years old to sail from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.)

Before booking with any cruise line, you'll want to check the minimum age requirement of the cruise line to be sure you or someone in your group meets the requirements.

Drinking age on cruises

On most sailings from the U.S., guests must be at least 21 years old to drink alcohol on the ship. One exception to this rule is Margaritaville at Sea , which allows guests who are 18 to drink once the ship is in international waters or on Grand Bahama Island.

If you're sailing from a country that allows legal drinking at 18, as many European countries do, check the drinking policy for those who are younger than 21 for that particular sailing or cruise line before booking. For example, Disney Cruise Line allows 18- to 20-year-olds to consume alcohol on closed-loop sailings departing from any European country. Parents or guardians just need to sign a consent form.

Be warned, though, that consuming or even buying alcohol for those younger than 21 is a serious offense that can lead to forced debarkation on sailings that say the age for drinking is 21 and older.

Cruise lines generally frown on bringing your own alcohol on board, limiting bottles and charging corkage fees. Check your specific cruise line's policies because they are all different.

For example, Disney Cruise Line allows those who are at least 21 to bring two bottles of wine or six beers onto the ship with them in a carry-on bag on embarkation day and again at each port of call. Carnival Cruise Line allows cruisers 21 and older to bring one bottle of unopened wine per person on board in their carry-on luggage on embarkation day only.

If you decide to try to sneak on more alcohol than allowed , security can confiscate and discard it. Most cruise lines will open bottles of water, mouthwash and other clear liquids to confirm it's not contraband alcohol.

OK, enough of the rules and regulations. Here are our favorite cruise lines for young adults.

Best cruise line for a party: Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line is known for its lively atmosphere and party vibes. Sailings on Carnival are among the most affordable, which can benefit young adults looking for a fun vacation on a budget.

Along with fun fast-casual dining spots from celebrities like Guy Fieri and Shaquille O'Neal, Carnival's so-called "Fun Ships" have an abundance of shows, trivia challenges and outdoor activities that appeal to younger cruisers. On Carnival ships, those 18 and older can gamble in the onboard casino but cannot order drinks at the many themed bars unless they're at least 21 years old.

Carnival doesn't typically offer planned events for cruisers ages 18 to 25. Travelers looking to meet similarly aged travelers can connect with shipmates on Facebook groups dedicated to their sailing and arrange an unofficial meetup with other young adults on board. Active shore excursions, the fitness center and the hot tub on the adults-only sun deck are great places to look for peers during a cruise.

Best cruise line for young adult meetups: Disney Cruise Line

Even though Disney Cruise Line is known as the family cruise line, young adults may be on board because they have younger siblings or their family enjoys visiting Disney parks. Cruisers who have aged out of Vibe, the teen club for 14- to 17-year-olds, will find their own "secret" onboard club known as the 1820 Society.

Cruisers ages 18 to 20 who want to participate in the planned activities can see all the available happenings on the Disney Cruise Line app once they're on the ship. Young adults should attend the first meetup, which is where introductions and icebreaker games happen. Throughout the cruise and even on Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, meetups and activities are scheduled for the age group.

Another plus for young adults is that Disney only requires guests to be 18 years old to sail unaccompanied. That means you and your friends don't need a parent chaperone for a weekend cruise filled with late-night dance parties in the District and brunch at the adults-only Palo restaurant .

Best cruise line for young foodies: Celebrity Cruises

Young adult cruisers who get excited about international cuisine and craft cocktails will enjoy Celebrity Cruises , especially its newest Edge-class ships. The line is a good choice for multigenerational trips, especially as its fares might be beyond a 20-something's budget.

Celebrity Edge, Apex, Beyond and the upcoming Ascent are filled with hip venues, such as Craft Social with its dozens of boutique beers and Eden with its innovative, nature-themed cocktails. If you want to feel the ocean breeze on your face while sipping a martini, head to the Rooftop Garden, where greenery, plush loungers and ocean views will keep you coming back throughout your cruise.

Dining at the many onboard restaurants is also a treat, with venues specializing in sushi, backyard barbecue, French bistro classics and handmade Italian pasta. If your budget doesn't allow for specialty dining, you won't get menu fatigue with four main dining rooms included in the fare. Each restaurant is themed around a different country's cuisine, including Greek, French, Italian and new American.

Best cruise line for quick sailings: Royal Caribbean

Young adults may struggle to take time off from work or school to do a weeklong cruise. With Royal Caribbean , travelers in their late teens and 20s can take part in two- to five-night sailings from the U.S. or Europe that have affordable rates. Even better, some of the line's largest and attraction-laden ships sail these shorter itineraries, so you won't have a chance to be bored.

Cruises from Florida often go to Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , which adds even more value to the cruise by adding a hassle-free beach day into the destination mix. On the island, lunch is free and you can use your shipboard beverage package to cover your drinks. Plus, the inviting pool and many beaches are great places to hang out and enjoy the water. You must pay extra to ride CocoCay's many waterslides, zip line or tethered hot air balloon.

On board the ships, young adults can meet others at the sports court for a pickup game of basketball or pickleball. The nightclubs and lounges are fun spots to dance and sing with new friends. The minimum age to sail without an older adult in the cabin for cruises departing from North America is 21.

Best cruise line for an adults-only atmosphere: Virgin Voyages

Young adults looking for a kid-free vacation should check out Virgin Voyages , an adults-only cruise line where the minimum age to book is 18. Gratuities, Wi-Fi and sassy group workouts are included in the fare. Each of the three (soon to be four) ships have many restaurants, such as Pink Agave for Mexican and Gunbae for Korean barbecue, all of which are fee-free.

At sea, guests ages 18 and older can enjoy an alcoholic beverage, but while docked in any U.S. port, the minimum drinking age on board is 21.

One of the most exciting moments of every Virgin Voyages sailing is Scarlet Night, when the entire ship is decked out in red thanks to added red lights and red crew outfits. Guests are encouraged to don their crimson best and attend a late-night dance party on the pool deck.

Adventurous passengers can get matching ink with their besties at the onboard tattoo shop or attend a risque show at night. This is definitely a cruise to take with your partner or peers, not your parents.

Best cruise line for young adults traveling solo: Norwegian Cruise Line

Solo travelers are often overlooked and, frankly, outpriced on many cruises. With single supplement charges, solo cruisers pay the same total price for a room as two people sharing a cabin.

Norwegian Cruise Line changed the game with its Studio cabins. These 100-square-foot inside rooms are designed for one, so travelers won't be paying extra. Studio guests also get access to the Studio Lounge, a communal gathering space with big-screen TVs, drinks and snacks. Not all NCL ships offer solo cabins ; studios are available on multiple ships, including Norwegian Escape, Epic, Encore, the new Norwegian Prima and the upcoming Norwegian Viva.

On board, cruisers will find plenty of fast-casual and table-service dining options, including one of our favorite food halls at sea, Indulge Food Hall on Norwegian Prima and Viva. Active young adults will enjoy the go-kart tracks , virtual reality game rooms, waterslides and lively dance clubs found on many of Norwegian's newest ships. If you prefer to relax with a book and enjoy the ocean breeze, you can do that, too.

Bottom line

Whether on a family trip with younger siblings or older parents, a party cruise with friends or a relaxing escape with your significant other, young adults can find ships that speak their language. We recommend these six lines for 18- to 25-year-olds, but even on other ships, a good attitude and an adventurous spirit will go a long way toward making a trip you didn't choose extra fun. Young adults can find plenty that appeals to them on most cruises — with or without mom and dad.

Norwegian Breakaway: For the Artsy Fartsy

The name Norwegian Breakaway  fits it like a glove. Break away from the mundane and dive headfirst into the world of neon bowling, Broadway shows, and interactive art installations. 

This cruise ship has a water park for younger siblings and one for older kids too. There is a three-story sports complex with a basketball court. Sports tournaments will provide teens with a not-too-awkward way to make new friends.

The Norwegian Cruise Line puts family first with spacious suites and four different youth programs. The teen club is called Entourage and offers “modern, digital, and inclusive options” for 12 through 17-year-olds.

Older teens and young adults will love the spa options, which include a salt room and a thermal spa. 

The colorful ship décor provides an excellent backdrop for those hilariously awkward family photos where Dad thinks he’s in an 80s rock band. This isn’t just a ship; it’s a floating city . Between stops at world-renowned ports and excursions , there’s the chance to learn new languages while soaking in the hot tub, sample authentic cuisine, and interact with fellow teen travelers from across the globe at the Teen Club. MSC Cruises are a perfect blend of culture, adventure, and, of course, sunbathing.

The endless dining options happen to be a major selling point for teenagers. My 13-year-old often reminisces about his summer cruise with his grandpa to Iceland… because of the endless hamburgers and fries. We are hopeful that with time the memories of the hamburgers and fries will fade and the memories of seeing an iceberg will rise to the surface.

Alaska considers new limits for cruise ship visitors to help combat overtourism

The visitor limit agreement would go into effect in 2026.

JUNEAU, Alaska -- The pristine natural beauty of Alaska boasts breathtaking landscapes with vast national parks, glaciers and 6,640 miles of coastline that makes the destination particularly popular for cruises.

Now, the capital port city of Juneau, where crowds have been sailing in in record numbers, is considering a limit on large cruise ships with 250 passengers or more that would cap the number of daily visitors starting in 2026 to help combat overtourism.

New agreement in Alaska to limit cruise ship visitors

Last month, cruise lines including Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian signed an agreement with Juneau tourism officials to help manage the thousands of passengers getting off the boats at the same time and visiting the area.

While the numbers are subject to change, Sundays through Fridays, cruise crowds are expected to be capped at 16,000. That number will be limited to 12,000 on Saturdays.

The new agreement expands on last year's decision to implement a limit of five cruise ships per day in Juneau.

Juneau is home to some amazing outdoor attractions, such as whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier, but some local residents said they've had enough of the post-pandemic crowds.

"I personally came to the realization that Alaska was being sold as a friendly place and that my friendliness was a commodity for the cruise lines," resident Karla Hart told ABC News. "The idea is just one day every week to just take a pause -- to have our community back."

In 2023, a record 1.6 million cruise passengers visited Juneau, including Sarah Grathwohlwent, who was there for the first time earlier this spring and documented her journey on social media.

"It was beautiful to go and see a glacier -- was my first one," she said. "I'm not against limiting the amount of cruise ships, I think it would make it nicer for the locals who live there year round."

Overtourism around the world prompts new crowd management systems

Scott Keyes, travel expert and founder of Going.com, said that the challenges of overtourism are not isolated to Juneau.

"We have been setting new travel records every month so far in 2024, and there's no reason to think that's going to stop," he told ABC News.

In the U.S., Mount Rainier is among the National Parks that have begun implementing timed entry reservations to help manage large crowds. In Europe, hotspot destinations like Venice and Barcelona have implemented day trip fees for visitors.

Over the weekend in Barcelona, thousands of locals protested in the streets with water guns to take a stand against tourism, which they say has resulted in a higher cost of living for residents.

Due to increased demand in Athens, Greece, the city is also studying limits on tourist capacity.

Experts believe that as more destinations see surges in visitors, local officials may implement restrictions to deal with crowds diplomatically.

"I'm all in favor of steps taken to try to make sure you're managing that properly and respecting the local environment and everything," Keyes said.

Missing 14-year-old who vanished on cruise has now been found

He went missing after he didn't get back on the boat.

A 14-year-old who went missing while on a cruise with his family has been found safe and sound.

American teenager Aydin Brown had been on the European cruise with his grandmother when the ship docked in the German port of Rostock-Warnemünde.

He had last been seen at 7am on the Thursday (4 July) when he left the Caribbean Princess cruise ship and had gone off by himself.

Police sent out photos of the teenager, including ones from a security video which appeared to be showing an unidentified man speaking to the 14-year-old.

In a statement, police said that the two of them were seen walking to Warnemünde church square at around 7:45am local time on the day Aydin went missing.

The teen's grandmother left the ship that same day to stay in Rostock-Warnemünde, and cruise company Princess Cruises paid for the 14-year-old's mother to fly out to Germany.

Search efforts were launched to find the teenager and fortunately, Brown was found in a safe condition.

Aydin was reunited with his family yesterday (6 July) so it would appear that this story has a happy ending.

"We are delighted that Aydin Brown has been found safe and sound," Princess Cruises said in a statement yesterday. "We extend our heartfelt gratitude to German authorities for their swift response and exceptional efforts in locating Aydin after he disembarked in Warnemünde last Thursday morning."

The cruise had departed from Southampton, England on 30 June and had been scheduled to make stops around the Baltic Sea, including trips to the Danish capital of Copenhagen and Sweden's capital city of Stockholm in a 12-day cruise.

Despite their intent to be used for travel and fun, bad things can happen onboard cruise ships.

It can be hard to find people who go missing on them, as there have been a number of missing persons cases involving cruise ships where no body was ever found .

Some people who have been missing, presumed dead, for decades leaving their families with no answers as to their whereabouts will likely never get a resolution.

Then of course there's the ever-present danger for cruise ship passengers of being accidentally left behind.

Some passengers have been left stranded on islands because they didn't get back to the cruise ship in time and weren't allowed back on board .

Luckily in Aydin's case he was found safe and has been reunited with his family.

I've taken 4 Disney cruises without kids. Here's why they're actually the perfect adults-only getaway.

• Out of the 15 cruises I've been on, Disney Cruise Line is my favorite company to travel with.
• Disney cruises offer the perfect getaway for adults without children.
• From animation classes and private islands to Broadway-style shows, I never run out of things to do.

After taking over 15 cruises on most of the major lines , one stands out as my favorite company to travel with — Disney Cruise Line. Disney cruises combine what I love about the theme parks with relaxation and stellar dining, making them the perfect getaway.

I also love that Disney continues to invest in its cruise line. For example, the company's newest ship, Disney Treasure , plans to embark on its maiden voyage in December.

And next year, Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure will set sail for the first time. The company also invested between $250 million and $400 million in a new island in the Bahamas, which I was lucky enough to visit.

Although some may think of Disney Cruise Line as a company that caters to kids, I've had an incredible time on adults-only vacations with my sister, mother, friends, and husband. Here's why I think Disney cruises are the perfect choice for travelers without children.

I’m never bored on a Disney ship.

On most of the cruises I've been on, the main activities include eating and drinking. However, that's not the case on Disney cruises.

In addition to having great pools, Disney ships are known for having a wide variety of activities throughout the day. My favorites include trivia, mixology classes, panel discussions with Disney animators, and animation classes.

The food is by far the best I’ve had at sea, and I’ll always splurge on the specialty restaurants.

Food plays a big role in determining where I vacation, and I've had some of the most incredible meals on board Disney ships. In addition to the food, the restaurants are well-themed and detailed. While there are plenty of elevated eats, there are also casual bites, like pizza, and Disney favorites, including Mickey waffles.

While the main dining rooms are delicious — and included with the cruise fare — I'll always splurge on one of the specialty restaurants that charge an additional fee.

These upcharge restaurants offer a more intimate experience with super personalized service and a greater variety of dining options. My favorite is Palo, which is open for both brunch and dinner. Here, I've enjoyed fresh pasta, standout wine, and high-quality wagyu.

I love the themed bars, and the drinks are surprisingly affordable.

While Disney doesn't offer a drink package that includes cocktails, the well-themed bars are worth the splurge.

From a Star Wars-themed watering hole to a Peter Pan-themed speakeasy, I really enjoy the inventive cocktail programs and immersive settings. Each bar also has its own unique themed drinks, which keeps things exciting.

As a regular at Disney World, I was also surprised to find that drinks are much more affordable on a Disney Cruise, with prices consistent across the ships I've been on.

For example, my favorite Dole Whip spiked with rum was $9 on board, compared to the exact same version priced at $14 at Disney World .

There are plenty of adults-only spaces.

While I tend to spend much of my day at the lively main pool, which features Disney movies and live entertainment, there are also plenty of adults-only spaces, including pool areas exclusive to guests 18 and older.

Some ships even have bar districts with multiple venues exclusive to adults.

The rooms are spacious and practical.

I've found the rooms on Disney cruises to be the most spacious — and practical in design — I've encountered.

Most rooms on Disney ships also have a split bathroom, which means the toilet area is separate from the shower. This is a vacation lifesaver when multiple adults are trying to get ready at once.

There are also plenty of opportunities to enjoy Disney Magic.

I love Disney ships because, from dressing up for pirate night to meeting my favorite characters, there are plenty of opportunities to feel like a kid again.

The shows on board are Broadway-quality.

I'm a sucker for live entertainment, and each Disney ship offers at least one Broadway-style production. From "Frozen" to "Beauty and the Beast," I always make sure to check out these high-quality musicals, which are included in the price of the cruise.

Disney’s private islands are very relaxing.

I've been to several cruise-line private islands, but Disney's are by far my favorite. Castaway Cay , located in the Bahamas, exudes relaxation. The island is home to one of my favorite activities, the Castaway 5k, which is included in the cruise fare and allows participants to earn an exclusive race medal.

Disney's newest island destination, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, is located near the southern tip of Eleuthera in The Bahamas. The beaches here blew me away and were some of the best I've experienced after dozens of trips to the Caribbean and Mexico.

Disney Cruise Line is the perfect adults-only vacation, and I can't wait to plan another trip.

As a big fan of the parks, Disney Cruise Line takes those magical elements and upgrades them at sea with incredible food, live entertainment, and relaxation — making for the perfect adults-only vacation.

Its ships are home to some of the most exciting, highly themed lounge options I've encountered, and I love the Broadway-quality productions. While on board, I'm able to do as much or as little as I want.
