As Christmas wouldn’t be complete without some traditional entertainment, we get into the celebratory spirit with a fun-filled pantomime performance on our festive getaway to remember.

Blackpool Christmas

Blackpool Christmas

Few resorts anywhere in the world can rival the popularity of Blackpool - Britain's Capital of Fun! The world famous Tower, three piers, miles of golden sands, the spectacular Pleasure Beach with its breathtaking "white knuckle" rides, horse drawn carriages, a Sealife Centre, Madame Tussaud’s Waxworks, a Zoo Park, an Art Gallery - Blackpool has them all. But save some of your energy for the evening and sample the terrific summer shows, lively bars and pubs, for it is at night that Blackpool really stands out as the most exciting of all Britain's resorts. For a complete contrast to the sheer energy of Blackpool, some of the most serene scenery in Britain include the Ribble Valley and the Lake District nearby.

The Scottish Highlands

This might not be the first place you think of for a Christmas getaway, but Highland resorts such as Fort William are home to some truly beautiful scenery, so if we’re lucky enough to be blessed with a white Christmas this year, Fort William will be a fantastic place from which to enjoy it. And if you choose to celebrate on a Shearings holiday, there’s no need to worry if the weather outside is frightful, because you’ll enjoy the company of fellow holidaymakers in your hotel,  with fantastic festive entertainment and, on the big day, you’ll be treated to a delicious four-course traditional Christmas lunch with all the trimmings.

Ilfracombe, England

Now, a Devonshire seaside resort might not immediately spring to mind for Christmas holidays, but if you were to take a Christmas break here, we’re sure you’d be very pleasantly surprised! Picturesque North Devon is truly beautiful in the winter, and, of course, you’ll enjoy that superb Shearings Christmas package, including fantastic festive entertainment and a traditional four-course Christmas lunch!

Turkey & Tinsel pre-Christmas breaks

Haul out the holly, put on your best Christmas jumper, whistle your favourite yuletide song and join us on a magical journey to get you into the festive spirit on our pre-Christmas Turkey & Tinsel breaks!

  • Christmas Markets to visit

With plenty of new and old-favourite destinations to explore, check out the best selection of Christmas market breaks by coach and air. Get a festive filling of Gluwein in a range of UK and European locations like Brussels, Bruges, Edinburgh , Paris , Prague, Valkenburg, the Black Forest, York , Berlin, Vienna, Barcelona, Krakow and more!

Christmas Markets have been around in Europe since the late middle ages and are a great place to look for stocking fillers and get the whole family into the spirit of Christmas. Markets usually take place during the last week of November through to December, with stalls selling a range of wonderful products including hot mulled wine for the adults and cookies (among other treats) for the children. They're also a great place for the locals to showcase their talents with a range of handmade items such as nutcrackers, candles, music boxes and other decorations, all of which make great Christmas gifts. Nativity scenes, skating rinks and Christmas trees all add to the magical winter wonderland setting with twinkling lights.

Germany is the birthplace of the Christmas Market where you can shop to a magical backdrop of cathedrals and candlelit caves. You should visit German Christmas Markets if you want to escape commercialism and swap it for a more traditional and authentic shopping experience beneath a sky of twinkling fairy lights. Popular markets in Germany are Cologne, Rüdesheim, Berlin and Aachen. You should also, if budgets allow, take a cruise along The Rhine where you will also get the opportunity to visit a few destinations.

Although extremely popular, Germany isn't the only place to visit, you should also experience the Christmas Markets in Holland where you are taken underground to follow a cobweb of candlelit corridors to a beautiful velvet cave setting for the Valkenburg Xmas Market. Belgium is another great place for Christmas Markets with its sparkling winter settings and traditional delicacies of ' klaasjes ' and 'speculoos' in Bruges, Ypres and Liege. Other continental Christmas Markets can be found in France, Switzerland, Italy and the Czech Republic.

A variety of markets can also be found in the UK for those of you who do not wish to travel far, but would still like to soak up the festive spirit. UK Christmas often have a continental theme bringing over French, German or Italian traders. You'll find them in a variety of venues from town centres to stately homes such as Chatsworth House with some taking place over a weekend and others lasting a lot longer.

It doesn't matter which Christmas Market break venue you visit, you'll find stalls to explore, goods to sample and festive carols combining, where you can lose yourself in the holiday spirit.

Christmas Markets 2017

Tis' the season to be jolly! The Door2Tour.com Miniguide to Christmas Markets.

What do i wear.

The majority are held outside so make sure that you dress suitably for spending time in the open air. Warm clothing, comfortable shoes and a brolly should help you deal with the British weather in winter.

What should I take?

Layers, layers and more layers as it's chilly outside. Loose change or small currency notes are also advisable for the stalls as credit or debit cards are not always accepted. Take a big bag and some 'J' cloths or kitchen towels to protect those delicate gifts you've purchased.

Plan your trip?

It's worthwhile visiting the websites for the Christmas Market that you intend to visit so you can find out who will be exhibiting and what delights will be on offer. Some also provide programmes that you can download but if you can't find a particular stall, ask the friendly guides who will be happy to help.

Avoid the hustle and bustle

If you want a more leisurely experience, visiting the markets on weekdays would be best. Evenings tend to be busier than the daytime, whereas Monday to Thursday nights are usually the quietest. Expect the weekends to be busy and crowded.

Are the markets easily accessible?

The majority are suitable for wheelchair users but it might be worth considering that some are located on cobbled streets (not suitable for high heels) and there could be narrow alleyways to contend with.

Where can I eat and drink? You'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to food and drink with many stalls offering Glühwein, Bratwurst, Christmas Stollen, Lebkuchen, hot chocolate, mince pies and mulled wine. Make time to eat in a traditional cafe or restaurant if you're visiting a continental market.

Can I take photographs?

Yes you can but photography should be for personal use only.

Can I bring the children with me?

Of course, children are welcome at any of the Christmas Markets but must be accompanied by an adult at all times. They're a great experience for the whole family to get into the spirit of Christmas.

What will I find at the Christmas Markets? Christmas Markets are perfect for finding that elusive Xmas gift for someone who has everything! You'll find traditional handicrafts, lighting, decorations, nutcrackers, candles, glass baubles, music boxes and wonderful edible treats!

What else can I do there?

As well as exploring your Christmas Market of choice, make time to see some of the sights in the city you're visiting. These can vary from churches and museums to baroque palaces, shopping arcades and popular tourist attractions.

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than by visiting one of these great destinations in the UK and across Europe:

York - St Nicholas Fayre  Enjoy the historic charm of medieval York at Christmas. A great destination to take in the sights, sounds and tastes of Christmas.

Leeds - Christskindelmarkt Leeds' traditional German market, Christkindelmarkt, brings a taste of Germany to Leeds. With the authentic wooden chalets, Christmas carousel ride and a range of festive treats. This seasonal event is not to be missed.

Lincoln  Experience a truly festive time in Lincoln this Christmas time. The gothic cathedral provides the perfect backdrop and with over 200 stalls to browse around, you will not be disappointed with this traditional Christmas fair.

Edinburgh  The Scottish capitals' Christmas event does not disappoint, with traditional wooden stalls, rides for the whole family and atmospheric ice rink. The perfect place to get you in the seasonal spirit.

Bath  Located in the centre of Bath, amid stunning architecture, this famous Market is a great way to immerse yourself in the Christmas Spirit. With a picture perfect backdrop of Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths there are around 120 chalet stalls with a great selection of fantastic gift ideas, locally produced food and drink - you will be spoilt for choice when finding that unique Christmas gift.

Rudesheim  Set in the Old Quarter, Christmas is a fabulous time to visit this quaint German town. Beautifully decorated with twinkling Christmas lights, Rüdesheim is the perfect destination where you'll find a market consisting of 120 stalls selling a large collection of food and gifts perfect for that unique Christmas present.

Valkenburg Velvet Caves One of the most popular destinations in Europe at this time of year, the Valkenburg Christmas Markets are unique for one reason – they are held in an underground network of caves! The caves are full to bursting of stalls selling gifts and food perfect for a great Christmas present. The caves are also beautifully decorated with impressive mural paintings, twinkling lights and sculptures.

Brussels As the largest market in Belgium, it has over 240 stalls full of handmade crafts, unusual stocking fillers and speciality food and drink. Located in the heart of Europe, Brussels rises to the festive occasion with a beautifully decorated Town Hall and Guild Houses – adding up to the perfect pre-Christmas getaway!

The hotel was good and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Had a lovely bedroom, very spacious. The only problem was my diet as I am a vegan but it was solved on the second day.

The staff go out of their way to help sort queries out. I fell unwell during my recent holiday at Ardgartan and I was treated with much kindness and respect as always. All the hotels are exceptional and spotless.

Mrs Douglas

Former jets head coach eric mangini slams aaron rodgers for 'all the noise that is brought into the building', share this article.

Former New York Jets head coach Eric Mangini believes that Aaron Rodgers’ absence from last month’s minicamp is the direct opposite of what the organization needs heading into the season.

Rodgers missed mandatory minicamp last month to take a trip to Egypt. For Rodgers, it was the first time all offseason that he missed a workout or a practice at the Jets facility.

And because it is the Jets, the situation is now a huge talking point and one that is under the microscope. Rodgers, a future Hall of Fame quarterback, is coming off a season-ending Achilles injury that he suffered in Week 1 of the regular season.

An offer for Jets fans

Despite the injury, Rodgers did not take time off from the team and has been fully engaged in offseason workouts. But the optics of the trip, according to Mangini, is what matters the most right now.

But Mangini, who coached the Jets from 2006-08 , sees the timing of the trip as something that the Jets as an organization simply don’t need ahead of a season of expectations. In speaking on ‘The Herd,’ Mangini believes that the minicamp miss by Rodgers is an important issue for the team.

“It all matters and I really like Aaron Rodgers as a quarterback, and I predicted that the Jets would win the division last year if Aaron had played – and I do believe that he still has the ability to win,” Mangini said on FS1 this week. “What’s disappointing about that situation is he was the one that talked about the importance of limiting distraction. He was the one that would talk about the importance of focusing on only football. “And all the things that he preaches in the press conference. And then you get in this situation where he misses the mandatory minicamp, and I get that he was at the voluntary part and I think that’s great. But it’s not a secret when mandatory minicamp is. This year was actually a little bit earlier than last year’s mandatory mini-camp for the Jets. And then you understand when vacation is and if you have a trip that’s planned, you can set it up in a way that it doesn’t disturb the one thing that you’re required to do in the off season.

Mangini then went all-in on the importance of Rodgers missing minicamp in terms of the big picture for the Jets.

Retired NFL running back Bilal Powell makes a bold statement about the New York Jets

Davante adams says aaron rodgers is still talking about him joining the jets.

“So it does it matter, in the grand scheme of things, in terms of him missing those two days is going to dramatically change how he performs, or the other group performs? No, but it’s more indicative of all the noise that’s brought into the building that’s so unnecessary and distracts from everything else that they’re trying to get,” Mangini said. “And at the end of the day, if he doesn’t win this year – he’s gone. The coaching staff is gone. And the Jets are starting – probably the GM is gone. Everybody’s starting over.”

Mangini led the Jets to the playoffs in 2006, their only postseason appearance in his three years with the organization. He has an overall record of 23-25 from his time in New York.

Dad found dead in Magaluf with cuts and bites wasn’t killed by ‘hit and run’

A man who collapsed and died in Magaluf has been named as Michael Grant (Picture: RIP.ie/w8media)

A dad who was found dead in Magaluf with glass cuts, scratches and bites on his body was not killed by a suspected ‘hit and run’, an autopsy has ruled.

Michael Grant collapsed and was found unresponsive in Martin Ros Street near the Punta Ballena strip on the Spanish island of Majorca at around 4.30am on Monday.

A coroner initially reported he’d suffered injuries thought to be consistent with having been hit by a car, which included cuts to his knee and leg, as well as a back wound with glass still inside.

The 45-year-old, who was on holiday with his wife Leanne, two of their children and other families from Ireland, was also discovered with scratches and bite marks on his shoulder and chest.

But now medical examiners have concluded there is no evidence to support the theory he was involved in a traffic accident.

It was confirmed during the post-mortem carried out yesterday that Michael, a physiotherapist from Waterford, Munster, had taken cocaine as well as consuming alcohol before he died.

Further tests are now taking place at a specialist lab in Barcelona to determine whether or not the Class A drug he took contributed to what happened in any way, while a police investigation is also still ongoing.

Michael Grant, 45, was said to have been on holiday with family and friends when he died suddenly (Picture: RIP.ie)

According to local reports, saliva samples have been taken from the two bite marks to try and work out who is responsible and whether they were inflicted during an assault.

Detectives are still analysing CCTV footage from cameras in the area near to where the holidaymaker was found dead for any clues.

He had reportedly taken a wrong turn and became separated from other members of his group after spending the afternoon drinking by his hotel pool before going out partying.

They were staying at the four-star Sol Katmandu Park and Resort in Magaluf which describes itself online as a popular hotel for families with young children.

A security guard who raised the alarm told investigating police he had seen the man collapse and fall to the ground, but despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police informed his family after tracking them down to where they were staying by retrieving his name from a hotel wristband he was wearing at the time.

St Joseph's AFC Waterford, where Michael was a coach, said his impact on the club was 'immeasurable' in a heartfelt tribute (Facebook / St Josephs AFC Waterford)

A Civil Guard spokesman said on Monday before the post-mortem: ‘This death does not appear to be crime-related in any way but the autopsy will be key to determining what happens next.’

A well-placed source close to the investigation said yesterday: ‘The injuries the holidaymaker had were not life-threatening and this investigation is neither a murder or homicide probe at this stage, nor do we expect it to become one.

‘But we are looking into the hours leading up to his death because something has happened that needs to be properly explained.

‘Everything is pointing to this man being involved in some sort of altercation and being hit by a car in incidents that may or may not be unrelated.

‘There are still a lot of unanswered questions we need to try to get to the bottom of.’

Following his sudden death, tributes poured in for Michael, who was a popular local youth football coach.

‘Michael died suddenly whilst on holidays with family and friends,’ a notice issued on RIP.ie read.

St Joseph’s AFC Waterford, where Michael was a coach, also issued a heartfelt tribute.

The club said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that we inform you of the sudden shock passing of our dearest club member and head child coach, Michael Grant.

‘As many of you know, Michael was more than just a coach to us – he was a beloved friend and as a club and for his family we need time to process this devastating loss.

‘Michael was an integral part of our community, and his absence will be profoundly felt.

‘He was not just a coach but a mentor and a friend to all the children and adult members at St Joseph’s.’

People walk down slightly sloped street with neon signs outside the bars and restaurants.

St Joseph’s AFC said Michael’s dedication, passion, and love for the kids was ‘evident in everything he did’.

‘He cherished every one of them,’ the club added. ‘And I’m sure you will all agree that his impact was immeasurable.

‘We extend our heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family: his wife Leanne, their children Kayleigh, Niamh, Shay and Sophia, his parents Sam and Marie, his brothers, sisters and extended family.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this incredibly difficult time.

‘We also want to acknowledge the grief and shock that our own children and members are experiencing.

‘Michael was a significant part of their lives, and his loss is deeply personal to each of us.

‘Michael, sleep well, dear friend. You will be missed forever, but your legacy and the love you shared will never be forgotten and will always live on in our club.’

'dance moms' returns with new dancers, a new coach and more drama.

A new teaser for the hit reality show "Dance Moms: A New Era" debuts

LOS ANGELES -- The fierce dance competition is back with new faces and new levels of drama.

"Dance Moms: A New Era" reboots the popular reality dance show and brings in a new coach, the beloved Glo Hampton, who wants to take her students to the next level.

A new teaser showed us a glimpse of some of the new dancers and the pressure they will be facing from Coach Hampton.

"I can replace anyone at any time," Hampton tells her students.

The original "Dance Moms" on Lifetime was popularized because of coach Abby Lee Miller and the relationships she put her students through.

This new project is helmed by original series Executive Producer Bryan Stinson and will be produced by the A+E Factual Studios group for Hulu and Lifetime.

The Hulu Original series, "Dance Moms: A New Era" premieres August 7.

The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC Station.

Can Ole Miss Play For an SEC Title in 2024?

John macon gillespie | jul 5, 2024.

  • Ole Miss Rebels

There is a lot of talk centering around the Ole Miss Rebels ' chances to make the College Football Playoff this season, and rightfully so. But can they also achieve another program-first in 2024 and reach the SEC Championship Game?

The SEC Championship Game has been played since 1992 to crown the winner of the Southeastern Conference, and although Ole Miss has had some talented teams in that span, it has never been able to get over the hump and play in this contest. The Rebels' last conference title came in 1963, long before the advent of the SEC title game.

Could that change this season? Ole Miss is obviously one of the most popular picks to reach the newly-expanded College Football Playoff, but what about a trip to Atlanta to play for a conference title? Since the SEC is scrapping its division model this season thanks to Oklahoma and Texas joining the league, all the Rebels would need to do is finish second overall in the conference standings to make this trip.

Recently, The Sporting News released three bold predictions for Ole Miss' 2024 season, and one of these was that the Rebels will, in fact, play for a conference title. You can view an excerpt from the piece below.

"Given their 11-win season and all of the transfer momentum, there's a very real path for Ole Miss to fight their way into the conference title game. The Georgia Bulldogs are likely the favorite to win the conference, but the rest of the field is wide open for a Rebels run."

If Georgia did reach the SEC title alongside Ole Miss, it would set up a rematch of a regular season game that is scheduled to take place in Oxford on Nov. 9.

The Rebels' primary goal this season should be to reach the CFP, with or without an SEC championship. But if Ole Miss is good enough to be in the running for a playoff berth, it stands to reason that it could play for a conference title at the same time.

Alongside no longer having to fight through the SEC West, Lane Kiffin's team also has the advantage of a somewhat-favorable schedule in 2024. A road trip to Baton Rouge to face LSU is Ole Miss' toughest game on paper, next to the home date with Georgia.

Not facing the Alabama Crimson Tide could go a long way in boosting the Rebels' shot at making this ever-elusive trip to Atlanta.

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

Image

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

This story is featured in our One Notable Number series , which spotlights the key numbers leading our coverage.

Take a look at more Notable Numbers here.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.
