A picture of boats docked in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada while on a Canada cruise

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Charlottetown is the capital of Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island, as well as its largest city, though it has fewer than 35,000 residents. Despite its modest size, the city has an impressive number of Victorian houses and buildings and great parks waiting to be explored. For Canadians, it is perhaps most famous as the Birthplace of Confederation. It was here, mostly at Province House, that an 1864 conference led to the creation of the Dominion of Canada.

Prince Edward Island is linked to New Brunswick on the mainland of Canada by the 13-kilometer (eight-mile) Confederation Bridge that soars over the Northumberland Strait. A remarkable feat of engineering, the bridge opened in 1997 and is the longest in the world over icy waters.

Sites within downtown Charlottetown include the lovely Victoria Row, which becomes a pedestrian mall each summer, and other historic buildings, some of which are now museums. Nearby Prince Edward Island National Park is home to white-sand beaches and hiking and biking trails—plus fans can see the house and farm that inspired the beloved book  Anne of Green Gables . During your visit, you can also learn about the daily lives, past and present, of residents on lighthouse and boat tours.

Prince Edward Island (aka Ile-du-Prince-Edouard) is a Canadian province that consists of the main island plus 231 smaller isles. The island's largest/principal seaport is Charlottetown (locode CACHA) located on its south-central coast.

The island has a total land area (no internal waterways) of 2190 mi2 (5660 km2) and total population around 150,000. The province's entire land area (including all islands) is 5696 km2 (2195 mi2). By area, Prince Edward Island is Canada's 13th largest and the world's 104th largest island. The island is located approx 200 km (125 mi) north of Halifax NS and approx 600 km (370 mi) east of Quebec City .

Informally, the island is called "Garden of the Gulf" and "Cradle of Confederation" (Cunabula Foederis), the latter referring to the Charlottetown Conference (1864). This province is part of Canada since 1873, joining the independent country as its 7th province.

The local economy is largely based on farming (producing 25% of the country's potatoes) but also on short-break vacation travel and tourism.

The list of "Canada top 10" largest islands (world rank in brackets) includes Baffin Island (5),  Victoria Island  (8), Ellesmere Island (10), Newfoundland (16),  Banks Island  (24),  Devon Island  (27),  Axel Heiberg Island  (32), Melville Island (33), Southampton Island (34) and Prince of Wales Island (40). All of them (excepting Newfoundland - in Newfoundland-Labrador) are located in the Nunavut- Northwest Territories of Arctic Canada.

Prince Edward Island (abbrev PEI) is in the Gulf of St Lawrence and neighboring with Cape Breton Island (to the east), with Nova Scotia peninsula (to the south), with New Brunswick (to the west) and with Northumberland Strait (to the south). There are two urban areas on the island:

  • Charlottetown Harbour (centrally on the southern coast) consists of Charlottetown City and the towns Cornwall and Stratford.
  • Summerside Harbour (on the southern coast) is approx 40 km (25 mi) west of Charlottetown. It consists of Summerside City.

Island's coastline features long beaches, red sandstone cliffs, large sand dunes, marshes, numerous bays and natural harbours.

Charlottetown has population around 35,000 (metro around 65,000). It is the province's capital and Queens County's seat. It is named after the British queen Sophia Charlotte (Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, 1744-1818), wife of King George III. The modern-day Charlottetown was created as a merger with the following towns and villages (now neighbourhoods) - Brighton, East Royalty (with Hillsborough Park), Parkdale, Sherwood, West Royalty, Winsloe and Spring Park.

Summerside (population around 15,000) is island's second largest town located on the western shore. It was first incorporated in April 1877 (as a town) and as a city - in April 1995. Just like the capital Charlottetown, Summerside is a merger of the main city with the towns of Sherbrooke, St Eleanors and Wilmot. Among the city's attractions is the Summerside Raceway (harness racing track) - Canada's oldest, operating since 1886. [It is located next to the Credit Union Place and has capacity of around 4,000 seats, plus a bowling alley, a large swimming pool, fitness, meeting rooms.

Around 94% of the locals speak English, and around 4% - French. As demographics (ethnic origin), around 42% are Scottish, 36% Canadian, 33% English, 33% Irish, 19% French, 6% German.

Sit back and relax, enjoying views as you travel en route to Cavendish, home of the Green Gables Heritage Place, the house that inspired the children’s classic. The homestead immortalized in the book is exceptionally beautiful and fans will get a kick out of exploring the ground they have read so much about. Relatives of the author often offer guided tours and you never know when they will appear to greet guests! You may browse the gift shop for books and souvenirs. Gain an overall understanding of Charlottetown Walking through three vastly different landmarks, each one historical in its own way. The largest of the city's greenspaces, Victoria Park has provided a serene waterfront setting since 1873. While traversing the shaded paths, you may come across some of the original survey stones. At Province House - a National Historic Site that overlooks Queen Square - you will discover how Canada was formed as the result of a watershed conference held in the building in 1864. That event led to Canada becoming a federation, the reason Charlottetown became known as the Birthplace of Canada. St. Dunstan's Basilica earned its National Historic Site designation for being the most elaborate church in the Maritime provinces and a fine example of Victorian Gothic Revival architecture. Pope Pius XI granted St. Dustan's the title of basilica in 1929 for its historical significance.

• Visit two National Historic Sites that lend great insight into Charlottetown’s past. • Stroll through Victoria Park, the city’s largest parkland. • Pause at the site of the 1864 conference that led to the formation of Canada. • See one of only 20 churches in Canada that the pope has designated as a basilica.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

  • Adult from: € 139,08 EUR
  • Child from: € 111,08 EUR

Enjoy a leisurely walk through leafy Victoria Park, a tranquil setting at the southernmost tip of Charlottetown. Named for Queen Victoria in 1873, the property was once farmland and the site of a British fortification built to protect the shipping channel into Charlottetown Harbor. Today, the park is the city’s largest greenspace. As you meander along the paths that wind through the waterfront oasis, you will surely be enthralled by the serenity. The park’s coastal road runs past historical sites such as Prince Edward Battery and the Angle Stone, one of the markers that the 19th-century surveyors placed when laying out the park. Dead Man’s Pond lies the heart of the property and is supposedly bottomless, full of pirate treasure and haunted by the spirits of murdered people that were dumped in the water. In spite of the legends, Victoria Park is one of Charlottetown’s most delightful and peaceful settings.

• Stroll through Victoria Park, the city’s largest urban oasis. • Admire the views of the waterfront from Charlottetown’s southernmost point. • Enjoy the serenity of the park, an oasis despite being near the heart of the city.

Duration 1 hour

Settle in for a relaxing drive through Charlottetown, taking in the historical landmarks and getting your bearings so that you may easily explore further on your own.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of downtown Charlottetown, which was named in 1763 in honor of Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III. The town is wonderfully atmospheric, as you will see driving along the charming waterfront and through the heritage districts. Now a museum, the Victorian home is filled with period furnishings.

After walking from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of Charlottetown, home to some of Canada’s most beautiful and historical churches. Your first destination will be Trinity United Church, which opened in 1864, shortly after the convention that led to the country’s confederation. Savor The Flavor of P.E.I.

Duration 3 hours

Enjoy a sampling of Prince Edward Island’s signature culinary dishes and dessert, including fresh mussels, succulent lobster rolls and ice cream that was voted Canada’s best.

After walking from the pier, you will soon be in the heart of Charlottetown, a city known as the birthplace of Canada because an historic 1864 conference was held here, which led to the country’s confederation. Charlottetown is also renowned for its fresh seafood and other culinary treats, which you will sample at various locations.

You will stop for a plate of Prince Edward Island mussels at the Olde Dublin Pub. These succulent, bluish-black bi-valves are grown in the nutrient-rich waters all along the island’s coast. Besides being low in fat, cholesterol and sodium, the mussels are delicious. They are typically steamed and served with melted butter, cocktail sauce or even a curry concoction.

Next, you will sample the island’s famed lobster rolls at Peake’s Quay, a restaurant on the waterfront. Like mussels, lobster rolls can be prepared in a variety of ways. Peake’s Quay typically tosses chunks of lobster with celery and citrus aioli and serves it on fresh-baked bread.

For dessert, it’s off to Cow’s Creamery, an ice cream shop with dozens of flavors. You might try a scoop of Moo York Cheesecake, PEI Blueberry or Wowie Cowie, a blend of vanilla ice cream with English toffee, chocolate flakes and Moo Crunch. Cow’s also sells what it calls “udder stuff,” ranging from whimsical beach towels to furry cow slippers.

PEI Brewing also produces several seasonal craft beers that may be on the menu, all of them with distinctive tastes and presented in a light-hearted atmosphere that pays off the company tagline: “Dream Big. Work Hard. Have a Beer.”

Curated Shore Excursions in Polynesia

We have partnered with luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler to bring globetrotters an exclusive collection of itineraries handpicked by the magazine’s dedicated editors. Four of our Polynesia itineraries are included among the selection of Condé Nast Traveler-branded itineraries , featuring editorial insights and unique tips in featured ports of call, sharing insider knowledge on what to discover, savor and experience in each destination.

An example of exclusive editor's tips in French Polynesia includes skipping the restaurants and heading to the food trucks, or roulettes as they’re called in Papeete, for a cheap and cheerful al fresco dinner featuring local bites; strolling through downtown Papeete getting to know its storied history via its colorful colonial architecture while visiting landmarks like the Notre Dame Cathedral, town hall and the bustling 155-year-old Papeete Market; and swimming with reef sharks during an intimate boat tour aboard a small sailing catamaran with family-run tour operator Voila Moorea.

Additional shore excursion highlights include:

Aito Off-Road Safari: Traveling off-road in a four-wheel drive, soak up the exquisite beauty of Moorea, exploring the verdant mountains, deep valleys and white-sand beaches, stopping at a sacred ancient marae and learning about the pineapple crop on the way.

Vanilla Flavor & Taha’a Motu Picnic: Cruise to the island of Taha’a from Raiatea – source of 70% of the vanilla grown in French Polynesia – to explore an intoxicatingly fragrant vanilla plantation and visit a tiny islet for a Polynesian picnic lunch and some beach time.

Sail Bora Bora by Catamaran: Discover Bora Bora’s famously gorgeous lagoon by catamaran, comfortably watching the views of the magnificent extinct volcanoes and spotting colorful tropical fish above the crystalline reef.

Discover Tahiti’s West Coast: From the Robert Wan Pearl Museum and Marche de Papeete to the tranquil Jardins Paofai, observe the surfers on their longboards alongside natural treasures like the thundering Faarumai Waterfalls, Arahoho Blowhole, and the Maraa Fern Grottos, home to the largest underwater cave in Tahiti.

Visit to Taipivai Valley: Set off on a guided adventure in a four-wheel-drive vehicle into the lush valley described in Herman Melville’s 1846 novel Typee . A famously rugged paradise, Taipivai Valley is spectacularly beautiful, rich in archaeological sites, and yours to discover during this fascinating excursion.

Shark and Stingray Snorkel Safari in Bora Bora: Explore Bora Bora’s turquoise, unspoilt lagoon via boat before slipping into the gin-clear waters to discover the ancient crater rim of Moti To’opua, gliding alongside the island’s graceful stingrays and parrotfish.
