With a length of less than 2 ½ cubic inches, the Anker power strip is highly compact and portable. The power cable comes with a thick rubber coating that offers protection from fire and overloading.  While this power strip makes an excellent travel companion, it is also great for everyday use around the house! Power Strips - Why they're not allowed on ships and how to safely gain some extra outlets

Many of us cruise with quite a few battery-powered devices that we want to keep charged, but cruise ship cabins don’t have as many outlets as we’d like. Common power strips are prohibited from cruise ships for safety reasons, and there aren't "cruise ship power strips", but there are alternatives. Let’s look into your options, and briefly cover why power strips aren’t allowed.

Why can’t I use a power strip from home?

What are the alternatives.

European Outlet Adapters are another accessory to help you out is something you may already own. A simple $5 adapter that gives you an extra outlet (or two). Most cruise ships supply both 110VAC and 220VAC power to cabins and public areas. In North America we use 110VAC, and these are the outlets you likely use in your cabin. On almost every cabin I’ve ever had however, there is at least one 220VAC outlet (Type F, as used in most of Europe) near the vanity. As more and more of the electronics we use are dual voltage, a cheap adapter is enough to use this outlet with most of your devices. It’s important to know that while it’s not common, you must verify that the charger or other device you’re plugging in accepts ~220VAC or you risk breaking whatever you plug in. I personally have a number of these adapters for travel, but find this one  to be really well made, and it even gives you a second outlet!

If you’re going on a cruise, you might have heard that cruise ship cabins are notorious for not having enough electric and USB outlets (less than an average hotel room). Since many cruisers have cell phones, laptops, curling irons and other appliances, this is genuinely a bit of a problem.

I’ve been on over 25 cruises across several cruise lines, and even newer cruise ships seem to have this issue. But, there is a solution.

In this post I’ll go over what you need to know about the rules for power strips on cruise ships and which cruise approved power bars are best.

Can You Bring a Power Strip On a Cruise Ship?

Cruise lines prohibit bringing surge protected power strips and extension cords on cruise ships. This means the power bar that most people use at home won’t be allowed on board, and will be confiscated if found. 

While power bars with surge protection are not permitted on cruise ships , there are non-surge protected power bars and cubes that are accepted by cruise lines.

Extension Cords for CPAP Machines

If you need an extension cord for a CPAP machine, be sure to contact your cruise line or travel agent for guidance. Cruise ships may be able to provide you with a non surge protected extension cord onboard, or give you instructions for what to bring.

Why Are Power Strips Not Allowed on Cruise Ships

Surge protected power strips are not allowed on cruise ships, and will be confiscated if found. But why?

Cruise lines point to the fact that surge protected power strips and extension could pose a hazard. However, the specific answer to why power strips are prohibited on cruises is hard to find and back up on cruise line websites.

However, explanations across the internet include that surge protectors may interfere with the cruise ship’s electrical system and even potentially cause a fire, since a cruise ship is wired differently from buildings on land.

Here’s a document from the United States Coast Guard issuing a Marine Safety Alert about Surge Protective Devices Onboard Vessels. The document details 2 separate stateroom fires, which they attribute to the use of surge protected devices.

“A marine casualty investigation of two separate stateroom fires onboard a U.S. Flag Container ship revealed that the sources of the fires were attributed to the use of SPDs plugged into a lighting circuit. It was discovered that a ground had developed on another circuit that was connected to the same distribution panel providing power to the staterooms. This ground created an imbalance of voltage between the two power conductors supplying the SPDs which caused excessive currents, overheating, and subsequently, a fire.”

The Coast Guard document goes on to recommend “that vessel Owners, Operators, Class Society Surveyors, Insurers, and other inspection personnel examine the risks associated with the use of SPDs aboard their vessels, and if necessary ensure their organizations have policies and procedures relating to their use”

Electric Outlets

On all ships, each stateroom has one electric outlet located at the desk. The outlet is equipped with a 3-prong 110 volt (North America Grounded) and a 220 volt (Europe German-Style). On the Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee and Mardi Gras, there are three outlets located at the desk. 

On the Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Splendor, the staterooms are fitted with a 3-prong 110 volt (North America Grounded) as well as a standard Australian 3-point plug; adaptors providing 220/240 volt 60Hz are available upon request.   

On the Carnival Firenze, Carnival Horizon, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Sunrise, Carnival Venezia and Carnival Vista, there is one USB outlet (5 volt, 1000mA) in each stateroom. On the Carnival Celebration, Carnival Jubilee and Mardi Gras, there are multiple USB outlets at the desk and next to the beds. 

The outlet in the bathroom can only be used for electric razors.

Power strips, multi plug box outlets/adaptors and extension cords ( without surge protectors ) are allowed on board when used with proper caution. However, banned electrical devices or devices determined to pose a safety hazard, will be confiscated and returned the last day of the cruise prior to debark.

RC approved power strip/non surge protector

Can someone recommend a power strip or plug in that is not a surge detector?  

I need something for 2 iPhones, iPad, one laptop, and Apple Watch.  So at least two plugs and a couple of USB ports would be ideal.  I looked through old threads and I didn’t see anything consistent that folks bought.  

I sort of got the feeling even if something seemed legal (not surge protector or extension), it could still be taken away.  I want to buy the right thing without any problems. RC approved.

I bought one of those a few months ago for our Adventure of the Seas cruise but unfortunately the outlets were too low above the vanity and there was no room to plug it in, so it went unused.  Hopefully I'll be able to use it on a different ship.

Thank you for your suggestions.  We will be on Enchantment so I heard there is only one outlet.  I was worried about that.

May I ask how many times you have used this and the last time you used it?  Also, any issues with it fitting in an outlet?  Thanks!

We used it on our last two cruises. It fits in the one European plug that is by the table. Worked well and added a few more plugs for us to use.

and in the questions/answers, a few royal caribbean cruisers said there was taken.  Hmmm....did you put it in  your carry on bag or checked bag?  A couple of folks said people at the terminal may not know RC specific policy whereas once its on board, they will know.

We bought 1 of these and it fit fine on vanity on Jewel.

LOL.  Cruise approved by who?  The seller?  RCI hasn't approved anything for sale on Amazon.  People keep posting it's "cruise approved" or "RCI approved" and there is no such animal.  They do ban certain things, but they do not endorse any power strip.  I just take a USB cube and we unplug things as they are charged and plug in others as needed.  Phones and my fitbit get plugged in overnight.

They also have this with a USB-C outlet.

The USB-C is a smaller USB plug that is used for faster charging, at least that's my understanding. It's also what an Apple Watch 7 uses. Which is why I needed one.

Ah, guessing.  She said  "cruise approved".  I've seen several people post on FB that they have an RCI approved/cruise ship approved one because it says so on Amazon.  Point is, none are endorsed or approved except by the seller.  Some have had items confiscated that stated that on Amazon.  Sellers can basically say what they want.  Others get away with full extension cords for a cruise or two and tell others that they can bring them when it clearly states they can't.  

Power output (amperage) has nothing to do with the USB connector type.  Also, higher amperage does not always equate to "fast" or "super-fast" charging.  Those require both a certain level of amperage output and electronic circuitry within the charger to regulate the charge.  If your phone needs a "C" but the socket is an "A", just get an A to C cable.  Here are the valid USB plug types:

My Surface laptop has both.  I also carry a USB hub that has 4 USB ports that I can use as needed.  The only things I really need an electrical outlet for are my laptop, hair dryer and camera battery.  Phone and  fitbit use USB.   I plug my hairdryer in once a day to use and then unplug and my camera battery lasts days without needed recharge.  Heck, even my laptop can go hours without a charge.

And my point was that you can only guess about what is going to be approved and won't know until you get on board, so all you can go by is RC's stated regulations.... which at this point is that they can not be surge protected.  Until RC gives more specifications, your guess is as good as mine.

Don’t know if this is helpful, but while I do take a charging hub, I also bring two Halo external chargers. Both are small and work for overnight watch charging as well as charging the iPhone and iPad.

“Cruise approved” as in they meet the requirements that cruise ships have regarding these type of items. You’re reading too far into this - it was a general statement, as I’m sure most are when they say “cruise approved”. No need to be snarky.

Different cruise lines have different rules.  I doubt sellers on Amazon have checked the rules for every cruise line before writing their advertising.

Notable among the banned items are surge protectors, irons and steamers, drones, weapons, firearms, ammunition, as well as illegal narcotics and drug paraphernalia, including marijuana, regardless of its legality in the passenger’s place of residence or medical prescription.

Strong geomagnetic storm reaches Earth, continues through weekend

NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least seven coronal mass ejections (CMEs) from the sun, with impacts expected to arrive on Earth as early as midday Friday, May 10, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024. 

NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Warning for Friday, May 10. Additional solar eruptions could cause geomagnetic storm conditions to persist through the weekend.

• The First of Several CMEs reached Earth on Friday, May 10 at 12:37 pm EDT.  The CME was very strong and SWPC quickly issued a series of geomagnetic storm warnings. SWPC observed G4 conditions at 1:39 pm EDT (G3 at 1:08 pm EDT).
• This storm is ongoing and SWPC will continue to monitor the situation and provide additional warnings as necessary.

CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona. They cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface , potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations. SWPC has notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action.

Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth . A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California.
