Hello, I did a Danube river cruise from Budapest to Prague in May of 2019. I did it through Tauck, so I cannot comment on AMA v. Avalon. I can tell you that the weather was mostly lovely in May. It was cool, with the need for a light jacket and we had all sunny weather. I would vote Cesky Krumlov. It was actually one of our favorite places.

We are planning a Danube river cruise for next spring and looking for suggestions and recommendations. I have Gate1 (least expensive), Viking (mid-range) and Uniworld (most expensive) on my list. Food was excellent and varied, service was excellent. Our cruise director was kind of a character — very charismatic and eccentric and a highlight of the trip. Edit to add: Avalon has bikes to use, and I really recommend that. We had an overnight in Vienna and just went biking alone one day, and that was a highlight of the trip.

We also did the Viking Mozart concert in Vienna. We were underwhelmed, although a lot of people liked it. I was expecting a big concert hall. This was a concert just for Viking in a smaller room of the concert hall. It was a bit of a variety / comedy show mixed with the music - almost like a big cruise ship variety show.

Posted June 30, 2011. Having been on both the Rhine and Danube I would recommend that you do the Rhine first. A fantastic river cruise would be starting in Amsterdam and ending in Budapest. The scenery is great. Castles, vineyards and little villages. The Danube (upper) is not too bad but the lower Danube is NOT.
