Actually, Nusa Lembongan is one of my favorite places in the world and a must on any Bali itinerary . If you are limited on time, you can easily visit Nusa Lembongan on a day trip from Bali. The journey across the Badung Strait is super easy and takes only 30-45 minutes.

Article overview

As part of a tour

By fast boat, best time to visit nusa lembongan, how to get around on lembongan, jungut batu beach, snorkeling and stand-up paddle boarding, mangrove forest, dream beach and devil’s tears, yellow bridge and nusa ceningan, what to bring on a day trip to nusa lembongan, best restaurants on nusa lembongan, can you go to nusa lembongan for a day, is it possible to go snorkeling on a day trip to nusa lembongan, how long do you need on nusa lembongan, how much does a day trip to nusa lembongan typically cost, is nusa lembongan cheaper than bali, can you do a day trip from nusa lembongan to nusa penida, final thoughts: the best day trip to nusa lembongan, remember to pin for later 😉, nusa lembongan day trip from bali.

If you want to do a day trip from Bali to Nusa Lembongan, you have two options. Book your own fast boat tickets and organize transportation once you get to Lembongan, or book a guided tour. To get the most out of your day I recommend you join a tour, however, I wanted to give you both options below.

Experience all the highlights of Nusa Lembongan in one day as part of this highly-rated all-inclusive tour departing from Bali.

A private driver will pick you up at your hotel in Bali between 7:00 and 8:00 am and take you to Sanur. From there you board a fast boat (only 30 minutes), and when you arrive in Lembongan your driver will be waiting for you.

The two most beautiful beaches on Nusa Lembongan, Dream Beach and Mahagiri Beach, are both included in the tour, in addition to the Devil’s Tear, the Mangrove Forest, the Yellow Bridge and a nice lunch.

Spend 7 incredible hours exploring one of my favorite islands in Indonesia without having to worry about a thing. Everything is taken care of for you.

Keep in mind that pick-up in Seminyak, Central Canggu, Central Ubud, Uluwatu, Jimbaran, and Nusa Dua is included in the tour price. If you are outside of these areas, you can contact the tour company to arrange transport at an additional cost or book your own driver.

Don’t let the name “Instagram tour” deter you, it only means you will see the most picturesque places on the island. I’m normally not an organized tour person, but I loved this one!

Nusa Lembongan Instagram tour including Dream Beach, a must on any 2-week Bali itinerary.

Private & All-Inclusive Nusa Lembongan Instagram Tour

“What a great day!! A must-do when in Bali ❤️”

As mentioned earlier, the fast boat ride from Sanur in Bali to Nusa Lembongan takes only 30-45 minutes and is super affordable for everything that’s included. You can book your tickets in advance here .

Hotel pick-up and drop-off in certain areas in Bali (Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Ubud Center, Denpasar, Sanur) and on Nusa Lembongan are included in your return ticket. So all you have to do is be packed and ready to go in front of your hotel at the agreed-upon time.

There are many fast boat companies to choose from, I like to book through Viator so I get free cancellation and have the option to pay later. Paying online is also so much more convenient than having to bring cash.

Most companies depart Bali early in the morning, between 7:00 and 9:00 am, and return from Lembongan between 4:00 and 5:00 pm.

What to know before you visit Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons – dry and wet. The best time of the year to visit Nusa Lembongan and Indonesia, in general, is February to April (avoid Easter).  That’s when everything is lush and green after the rainy season, while the weather is mostly clear and sunny.

The main rainy season runs from November to February, peaking in January, and the main tourist season runs from July to August and during Christmas. I have been to the island during these times as well and have had a great time, however, I prefer February to April.

The best time to surf Nusa Lembongan is during the dry season, which runs from April to September. This is when the waves are at their best due to consistent Indian Ocean swells and the weather is ideal for surfing with little rainfall and offshore winds.

Keep in mind that the boat ride from Bali to Lembongan, across the Badung Strait, can be bumpy during the wet season, with unpredictable weather and rough seas. But it is nothing compared to how bumpy the fast boat from Bali to Lombok can be.

Nusa Lembongan is a small island, and the best way to explore is on foot or by renting a scooter or bicycle. There are no cars allowed, only the vans transporting visitors from the fast boat to their hotels.

You will most likely be arriving in Jungut Batu, my favorite part of the island. If you want to stay here, you can easily explore on foot or by bicycle. If you want to explore the entire island, I recommend renting a scooter or a buggy if you’re traveling with your family.

Scooter rentals are available at various locations on the island, and the cost is around 75,000 IDR per day. Bicycles can be rented for around 50,000 IDR per day. Read more in my Nusa Lembongan transportation guide .

It is important to note that the roads on Nusa Lembongan can be narrow and bumpy, and there are no traffic lights and few signs. But don’t let that stop you. Driving around, feeling the sun on my skin and the wind in my hair, is my favorite thing to do on Nusa Lembongan.

One day in Nusa Lembongan

Jungut Batu Beach is the main beach on Nusa Lembongan and the perfect place to start your day trip. With its crystal-clear waters and white sand (though a little rough), it’s the ideal spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and beach clubs along the beach where you can grab some breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Make sure to take a walk along the Jungut Batu Boardwalk, the view from there with Bali’s Mt. Agung in the background is just breathtaking. If you go all the way to the end you’ll reach Coconut Beach, a little gem most people miss.

You can easily spend your whole day trip to Nusa Lembongan in Jungut Batu Village, in addition to lounging on the beach and feasting on tasty treats, you can also go stand-up paddle boarding, snorkeling and surfing . There are also several boutiques along the main street where you can burn off some cash.

If you don’t feel like renting a scooter or bike, you can walk up to the Mangrove Forest where you can hang out at my “secret spot” in Lembongan, Agung Beach Club .

View of Bali's Mount Agung in the distance on a clear day from Jungut Batu Beach with boats in the foreground, during a day trip to Nusa Lembongan.

Nusa Lembongan is known for its incredible underwater world, and there are plenty of tour operators who offer day trips including snorkeling. I recommend this full-day snorkeling & Mangrove Forest tour departing from Bali.

The tour includes:

  • English speaking guide
  • Transportation to/from Sanur
  • Speedboat to/from Lembongan Island
  • Transportation on the island
  • Snorkeling equipment
  • Mangrove forest tour

🌟 Check price and availability here >> Full-day snorkeling & Mangrove Forest tour

If you go on a day trip to Lembongan on your own, you can easily rent snorkeling gear or maybe a stand-up paddleboard all over the island. Just look out for the many stakes in the water, left over from seagrass farming that was once the island’s main source of income.

As I mentioned above, Jungut Batu is a great place to go paddle boarding because the bay inside the reef is often very calm. Rent a board from one of the many warungs along the beach, they will often have signs outside. If not, just ask. The price for one hour is often 150.000 IDR. For snorkeling, make your way to the Mangrove Forest.

Girl paddle boarding on clear turquoise water with a glass bottom boat in the background on a day trip to Nusa Lembongan.

The Mangrove Forest, home to a variety of wildlife, including fish, birds, and crabs, is a must-visit attraction on Nusa Lembongan’s north coast. You can take a guided tour through the forest with a local who will eagerly explain everything there is to know about the mangroves. It’s a great way to support the local economy.

There are many warungs along the beach before you reach the Mangrove Forest, one more Instagrammable than the next. I wrote about my secret spot on Lembongan many years ago, and it looks even better today. Just take a look below.

You can spend your day at the warungs as long as you buy something to eat and drink. You can also rent snorkeling gear, stand-up paddle boards and kayaks.

Boho drift wood seating area at Agung Beach Club up by the Mangrove Forest, perfect for a day trip to Nusa Lembongan.

If you do decide to rent a scooter or buggy, you have to make your way to Dream Beach, the most beautiful beach on Lembongan . With its crystal-clear turquoise waters and powdery white sand, it’s no wonder why it is such a popular spot. Just be careful when you go swimming, as the waves and currents are very powerful here.

If you have the time, stop by Devil’s Tears, a coastal formation named after the powerful waves that crash against the jagged rocks, creating a spectacular display of water sprays and mist. The waves are so strong that they create a thunderous sound that echoes throughout the area.

You can watch the waves from a safe distance on the rocky shore or from the nearby viewing platform. The view is particularly breathtaking during sunset when the sky turns into a vibrant hue of orange and pink, creating a magical atmosphere.

Dream Beach - One of the best beaches on Nusa Lembongan

Finish your day trip with a stop at the Yellow Bridge, a unique and iconic landmark that connects Nusa Lembongan to its neighboring island, Nusa Ceningan. The bridge is painted bright yellow, making it a striking feature against the clear blue waters of the channel.

The bridge is a popular spot for tourists to take photos and admire the stunning view of the surrounding islands. The Yellow Bridge is also an important transportation route for locals, who use it to commute between the two islands. You can walk or drive across the bridge to explore the charming island of Nusa Ceningan, which is known for its cliffs, the Secret Beach , vibrant coral reefs and Le Pirate Beach Club .

I absolutely love to drive around the two islands and just see where I end up.

You don’t need to bring much on a day trip to Nusa Lembongan. If you have your swimsuit on, some sunscreen and your camera, you’re all set. Here’s a quick list:

  • Sunscreen: With the tropical climate, the sun can be intense. I recommended you bring a water-resistant reef-safe sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect you skin from harmful UV rays.
  • Swimwear: Nusa Lembongan is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters. Don’t forget to pack or wear your swimsuit so you’re ready for a refreshing dip in the ocean. I love this one .
  • Towels: I always bring this Turkish cotton towel with me. It is perfect for a day at the beach, as a cover-up if I get sunburned and I have even used it as a yoga mat before on Lembongan.
  • Water bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, especially when spending time in the sun. Bringing a reusable water bottle is an eco-friendly option and will save money on buying bottled water. Many cafés on Lembongan offer free refills.
  • Cash: Many places on Nusa Lembongan do not accept credit cards, so it’s important to bring cash for purchases such as food, souvenirs, and activities. Also, there are only a few ATMs on Lembongan and I have experienced them running out of cash.
  • Camera: With stunning views and picturesque landscapes, Nusa Lembongan is a photographer’s paradise. Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture memories of the trip. I used both my Olympus om-d em-5 and GoPro throughout the whole say.

For such a small island, Nusa Lembongan offers a variety of dining options that cater to different tastes and budgets. From local warungs to international restaurants, you can find something to satisfy their cravings.

One of my favorite cafés for breakfast is B Fresh on the south side of Jungut Batu. I especially love their wholewheat waffles served with fruit and they also do a mean bacon and egg roll.

For lunch, I always stop by the Eco Deli, one of the OGs on the Lembongan restaurant scene. Here I always go for one of the salads and a piece of banana bread for dessert. If you’d rather take advantage of the stunning view from the Jungut Batu Boardwalk, you can’t go wrong with The Deck , yet another old-timer on Lembongan, and the Thai Pantry.

For dinner, I like to just walk along the beach to see which place looks the coziest. Check out my Nusa Lembongan restaurant guide for more suggestions.

A Guide to Nusa Lembongan: Ferries, Beaches & Things to do (2024)

' data-src=

Nusa Lembongan is one of those magical places that feels like what Bali must have been like 30 years ago . In fact, I first visited Nusa Lembongan in 2009 and not a whole lot has really changed since. Cafes and restaurants have become a bit more bougie, and the roads are slightly more paved, but otherwise than that, Nusa Lembongan remains perfectly perfect .

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

The island of Nusa Lembongan is a 40-minute ferry ride from Bali and once you arrive you’ll be greeted with some of the clearest and most beautiful beaches you’ll see on your entire vacation in Bali.

Nusa Lembongan Quick Tips

Book your ferry tickets to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur in advance. Sanur Port can be quite chaotic with a number of departures leaving in the morning.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Sanur to Nusa Lembongan Ferry

The ferry terminal in Sanur is rather fancy and has had a major upgrade since I was last traveling in Bali. It can still be chaotic when you’re trying to pass through men yelling ‘taxi’ repeatedly as you drag your suitcase through the foray.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

I would highly recommend booking your ferry tickets in advance , as once you arrive there are so many touts and people trying to pull you into their ticket hall. There are a number of companies that depart throughout the morning and a handful in the afternoons.

Most ferries from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan depart early in the morning , starting from around 8 a.m. before finishing at around 11 a.m. There are a couple of more departures after noon, but the busiest time does seem to be in the morning.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

This is of course based on the tides and the best times for the ferries to be able to pull up onto the beaches.

Nusa Lembongan Ferry Prices

I paid 400,000 IDR for a one-way ticket to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur. A return journey would have cost me 600,000 IDR but I was planning on visiting Nusa Penida next and wasn’t sure of my onward itinerary.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

If you haven’t purchased your tickets in advance, you simply find a ferry company that is departing at a time that you want to travel, visit their office in Sanur Port and someone will hop off on their motorbike to physically pick up your tickets for you.

Left Luggage in Sanur Port

I spotted at least two places in Sanur Port for left luggage if you don’t fancy hauling your suitcase or backpack to Nusa Lembongan. One of the left luggage storage places was directly in front of Sanur Ferry terminal, The Baggage Bar , another luggage storage was outside of the taxi zone on Jl. Matahari Terbit, and towards the main road and called Sanur Luggage Storage – Penitipan Barang .

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Apologies for the vague descriptions and lack of prices, I had lost a brand-new Birkenstock sandal and was frantically retracing my steps whilst trying to soak up all the information I could to write about it later. The good news was my sandal had been found by a group of Balinese taxi men and they kept it safe for me.

Arriving into Nusa Lembongan

Most ferries arrive in Nusa Lembongan and land directly on Mushroom Bay Beach . It’s a really fun experience that requires you to get off the ferry into the water and wade a tiny bit to the beach.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

The crew of each ferry are experts in hauling your luggage ashore without it getting wet or falling over, seriously it’s incredible to watch.

The vast majority of ferries that head to Nusa Lembongan arrive in Mushroom Bay Beach, but there is a company called Rocky Fast Ferry that has a jetty that arrives at the east side of Nusa Lembongan. There are mixed reports about Rocky Fast Ferry, well not living up to its name and being quite slow or delayed.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

If you are nervous about arriving at Mushroom Bay Beach, please don’t be. The crew are wonderful and really assistive helping you up and onto the ferries. If you are traveling with children, I saw a number of the crew pick up the kids and place them directly on the boat, saving Mom and Dad a lot of unneeded stress and worry.

Where to stay on Nusa Lembongan

There are two distinct areas on Nusa Lembongan to stay at, the first being Mushroom Bay Beach which is where you’ll more than likely arrive. The other larger part of the island which has an abundance of accommodation is Jungutbatu Beach.

Mushroom Bay Beach

Mushroom Bay Beach is in my opinion the best beach in Nusa Lembongan, it’s a wide beach that has fine soft sand and beautiful waters to swim in. There are no beach clubs here, but there are beachside restaurants to choose from.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

There is a huge selection of accommodations in Mushroom Bay Beach that range from local homestays to large hotels like Hai Tide Beach Resort & The Tanis Beach Resort that are 3 stars and very affordable.

Mushroom Bay Beach is a fantastic place to base your stay if you want to relax on the beach, have restaurants and bars on your doorstep, and also have close access to the ferries back to Bali or Nusa Penida.

I stayed in the Tanis Beach Resort Nusa Lembongan , it’s quite dated, but really good value. I was initially in a bungalow but I changed rooms to be on one of the upper floors that had a fantastic view over Mushroom Bay Beach.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

I kept my curtains open and woke up to the most wonderful blue skies and sparkling sea views. There are 2 pools, but one of the best things is that its only a few feet away from the ferries (Tanis ferry in particular). Which made dragging my 20kg suitcase across the sand even easier!

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Jungutbatu Beach

If you’re looking for an easy and accessible beach and restaurants then look no further than Jungutbatu Beach . The beach here is the longest on the island and has the largest amount of accommodation found. The best selection of restaurants and bars is also found on Jungutbatu Beach.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Coconut Village Guest House – Great budget accommodation with a swimming pool and 50 meters from Paradise Beach.

O’Hana’s Beachfront Resort – One of the most popular hotels on the island and almost impossible to get a reservation in. Includes a pool, beachfront access and beautiful rooms. You’re in one of the best locations on the island. Next door is Ginger & Jamu, a great place for meals.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Ketut Losmen Bungalows Lembongan – Directly on the beach and really budget-friendly. It’s got a no-frills look about it, but who cares when you’re steps from the sea.

From Mushroom Bay Beach it’s a 12-minute motorbike ride across to Jungbatu Beach – there is one really steep hill you will need to navigate. My top tip for driving here is to brake the entire way down the hill and ease off as you get down to the bottom of the hill.

The Shacks at Sandy Bay are where to stay on Nusa Lembongan if you’re seeking a little bit of solitude but also knowing that you’re not too far away from restaurants and bars. The property is stunning, as are the adorable rooms that have been decorated with a lot of care.

Dream Beach

There’s not a lot happening on Dream Beach and that’s probably the appeal to a lot of people who love to come to Dream Beach Hotel, spend their days on the gorgeous beach, catching up on rest and eating in the nearby beach club. It’s total escapism.

Dream Beach Huts – Infinity Pool, outrageous views, and a sparkling beach. Perfection.

Water Blow Huts – Just a short walk away from Devil’s Tear, these bungalows feature outdoor bathrooms and a large swimming pool.

Where to eat in Nusa Lembongan

On the main street of Mushroom Bay Beach you’ll find Mushroom Espresso , a small cafe to grab a coffee ( the service is extremely slow here, I waited 40 minutes for a coffee, but it could have been the day in itself.) A really popular spot for breakfast.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

For live music and ample food selection head to Lgood Bar & Grill Lembongan that was pretty busy every night I passed by.

Indi Warung Lembongan Bar & Grill is a small Indonesian restaurant that grill right out the front and has excellent prices. Freshly caught fish and specials of the day are must-try items.

The majority of the Nusa Lembongan’s best restaurants and bars are found on Jungutbatu Beach.

One of the most popular beach clubs on Nusa Lembongan is O’Hana’s Beach Club , it’s also a superb place to base your stay too. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, you’re sure to find something on the menu to enjoy.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Right next door to O’Hana’s is the lovely beach-side cafe, Ginger & Jamu that serves excellent breakfasts and coffees. Watching surfers catching waves in front of you  whilst munching on a smoothie bowl is just something else.

G rab a quick coffee or some baked goods from Jungle Bakery for your daily exploration of the island.

Close to the Mahagiri Beach & Resort , Bronzer Cafe is a nice place for a quick lunch or to grab a coffee.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

The Deck Cafe & Bar is a beach bar on the headland that overlooks Jungutbatu Beach. It’s recommended to head to the Deck Cafe for sunset, but I found it completely underwhelming. Sunsets are better viewed on the other side of the island in Sandy Bay Beach Club. There are a number of bars before you arrive at the Deck that have live music or dinner specials that could be worth checking out.

Sandy Bay

Head for sunset to Sandy Bay Beach Club to catch a lovely sunset and eat some of the best food on the island. I enjoyed the beef rendang here, as well as the epic sunset. Sandy Bay Beach Club is a great spot to spend a lazy afternoon and they have a swimming pool too, the beach below looked quite rough to swim in.

Getting around Nusa Lembongan

The easiest way to get around Nusa Lembongan is to rent your own scooter. The island is small and it’s one of the better places to learn how to drive a scooter if you’ve never done it before. The roads however are not in the best condition, so it’s best to stick to the main roads until you have a certain level of comfortability riding your scooter.

Fun fact, long before I had my driving license, Nusa Lembongan was the first place I rented and drove a scooter.

Renting a scooter varies from each place but you can expect to pay around 80,000 – 100,000 IDR per day . I paid 80,000 from a place close to my hotel.

Otherwise, there are communal taxi’s that roam around the island, put your thumb out on the side of the road and tell them where you’re heading and they’ll name their price. The taxis are open at the back and you’ll be sharing with a few other passengers.

Things to do in Nusa Lembongan

One of the best things to do on Nusa Lembongan is to rent a motorbike and take off for the day. You’ll end up exploring the entirety of the island in a single day and stumble upon heaps of things to see and do.

Nusa Lembongan Mangroves

The mangroves of Nusa Lembongan are a natural defense system against climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and keeping it underground, as well as offering protection from rising sea levels.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

You can take a boat ride through the mangroves and it is incredibly peaceful. I had a wonderful woman from the Surya Mandiri community who pushed me around on her boat for 30 minutes, pointing out small animals that were too quick for me to make out. In the mangroves of Nusa Lembongan, 28 species of birds, monitor lizards and mud-crabs have made this their home.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

A lot of couples rented kayaks and were making their way through the serene mangroves. The price for a private mangrove boat was 300,000 IDR . I didn’t try to negotiate the price, but you can share the boat with other people if you hang around long enough.

One of the main industries aside from tourism on Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, and Nusa Penida are seaweed farms. You’ll see the farms in the water especially as you cross over the Yellow Bridge that connects Lembongan with Ceningan.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

You’ll be able to witness the collection and storing of the seaweed which kept me entertained for a while, and this product is a huge life resource for the local people of the Nusa islands.

Yellow Bridge

The iconic yellow bridge connects the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan . There are two ways to cross the bridge, either by foot or by scooter. Cars are not allowed on the bridge, nor would they fit to be honest.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

When riding your scooter across the yellow bridge its best to keep at a slow and steady pace. It’s really narrow and can be a tiny bit daunting when traffic is coming from the other direction, but everyone is very patient.

Exploration

One of the best things to do on Nusa Lembongan is to explore on your own schedule. Head down a dusty bumpy road and who knows what you’ll come across at the end of it. There are lots of hidden and secret beaches around the island, small beach bars that are worth stopping at and supporting local businesses as well as stumbling upon the natural sights of the island.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Snorkeling/Diving Trips

One of the most popular day trips off the island is to go snorkeling with the manta rays on Nusa Penida . Snorkeling trips leave in the morning and return just after lunchtime, leaving you with ample time to explore the island.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

I did the Manta Ray trip in October and unfortunately, we didn’t get to swim with the mantas as they hadn’t been seen in a few days, there were however lots of fish to see, and I even spotted a sea snake and a turtle.

It’s really enjoyable even if you don’t get to swim with the Manta Rays – I rented a GoPro from the tour company to capture some images for an additional 150,000 IDR.

Best Beaches on Nusa Lembongan

Some of the best beaches on Nusa Lembongan are easy to access, and a few are a little bit trickier.

Mushroom Beach

Mushroom Bay Beach is very easy to get to. The beach has ample room to lay down, and swimming is completely possible here. The ferries do come and go throughout the morning and early afternoon, but it makes for excellent watching.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Tamarind Beach

Tamarind Beach feels hidden away from the rest of the island . You’ll find a dive shop, and long-tail boats and that’s about it here. It’s the perfect beach escape for those looking for an escape.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Secret Beach

The signage for Secret Beach is, well, quite hidden. Head in the direction of Tamarind Beach and you might spot a tiny sign for it. Once you get there you’ll need to navigate down a sharp incline by foot and then you’re pretty much guaranteed to have the entire beach to yourself. It’s beautiful but there are no facilities, so you’ll need to come prepared with water, snacks and a good book.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Dream Beach

Dream Beach certainly lives up to its name and is very dreamy. A large white sandy beach that has strong currents, be very wary of actually swimming here . There is a small supermarket before you head down to the beach, and a small beach club to grab something to eat if needs be.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Jungutbatu is one of the longest beaches on Nusa Lembongan , you’ll spot the wreck of a crane in the background, and surfers in the morning. The beach is a bit more narrow here, but its still a nice place to spend a morning walking up and down it before you pick your spot for the afternoon to lay out on.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

White Sand Beach

Located in front of the Mahagiri Resort, you’ll find a large swing, white sand and palm trees. White Sand Beach is beautiful and worth stopping off for a swim before or after heading to the mangroves.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Nusa Lembongan is just a fantastic place to spend a couple of days exploring or relaxing. The island is whatever you want it to be. Explore on your own terms and enjoy every second, I’m still thinking about my time there. It’s a very special place and worth spending at least 2 nights of your Bali vacation on.

Wherever you decide to eat, you can expect to enjoy a variety of delicious options, including both vegetarian and vegan dishes. If you’re looking for snacks on the go, you can always stop at a supermarket or corner shop to buy mineral water, chocolate bars, fruit, etc.

Considering Nusa Ceningan: Is a visit worthwhile?

cliff jumping at Nusa Ceningan

Located between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida, Nusa Ceningan is the smallest of the Nusa Islands and is definitely worth a visit. Even if you only have a few hours to spare, you should make an effort to explore the magical island of Nusa Ceningan.

What will you experience at Nusa Ceningan?

The island is characterized by its rugged cliffs, idyllic surf spots and pristine water. One of the most popular things to do on Nusa Ceningan is to to visit the Blue Lagoon, which is famous for its turquoise waters, photographic opportunities and for being an ideal swimming spot!

If you want to beat the crowds, you could visit Secret Beach, which is only accessible through a restaurant. You’ll have to buy something from the restaurant in order to access the beach but it is definitely worth it.

Nusa Ceningnan is also home to plenty of surf spots and cliff-jumping opportunities. Adrenaline junkies will love jumping off Mahana Point into the blue ocean below. Just make sure you visit at high tide.

Don’t leave the island without making a stop at Ceningnan Cliff Point and take photos of the incredible views on offer. The onsite restaurant offers affordable, tasty dishes and provides the perfect place to relax after a day spent exploring the island.

Comparing islands: Which is more appealing, Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan?

Yellow bridge between the islands of Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan

While similar yet unique in their own ways, both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are worth a visit. While Nusa Lembongan is larger and has more attractions than Nusa Ceningnan, the smaller island is quieter and has some beautiful natural attractions of its own, making it impossible to determine if one island is more appealing than the other.

The ideal solution would be to simply visit both islands and decide which one you prefer for yourself! The iconic Yellow Bridge that connects these two islands makes it easy and convenient to visit both in one day.

The Yellow Bridge is an attraction all on its own and is one of the Nusa islands’ most recognizable spots for taking photos. The suspension bridge offers amazing views of both islands and it can be quite exciting to cross the bridge on a scooter.

Dual island adventure: Can one feasibly explore both Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida in a single day?

Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, Indonesia

If you have the time, you won’t regret a trip to Nusa Penida just 20 minutes away from Nusa Lembongan by boat. As long as you manage your time well and plan ahead, it is definitely feasible to visit both islands in a single day.

If you’re looking for the most convenient way to visit Penida, we suggest you book a boat tour to visit the west coast of the island, which is home to some of the best beaches on the island. Ferries and speedboats depart from Nusa Lembongan several times a day and provide an affordable and time-efficient way to travel between the islands.

What will you experience at Nusa Penida?

Nusa Penida tour from Bali

Some of the beautiful beaches that you can look forward to seeing during your time on Nusa Penida include Broken Beach, Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, Kelingking Beach, Crystal Bay and Suwehan Beach.

Besides the island’s famous beaches, there are several other natural attractions on Nusa Penida, including Guyangan Waterfall, Banah Cliff Point, ‘Teletubbies Hill’, Manta Point, Thousand Islands Viewpoint and so much more.

Those interested in the island’s history and traditions may also want to visit places such as the Goa Giri Putri Temple and other cultural hotspots. No matter where your interests lie, Nusa Penida offers something for everyone.

Day Trip to Nusa Lembongan from Bali

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Located across the Badung Strait from Bali’s southeast coast, the tranquil island of Nusa Lembongan truly feels a world away from the bustling traffic and crowds of Bali’s beach areas. Only a 30 minute fast boat ride away from the town of Sanur, Nusa Lembongan is an ideal destination for a day trip and one of our top things to do in Bali with kids . Read on to learn more about planning a day trip to Nusa Lembongan from Bali, for a fun family adventure exploring the island’s stunning coastline and picturesque beaches.

Fast Boat Cruise to Nusa Lembongan from Bali

It takes 30 minutes to travel by fast boat to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur, on Bali’s east coast. We booked tickets for a 10am departure with Rocky Fast Cruises , which I would highly recommend especially for families as I found them very helpful, professional and accommodating. Check-in is at the Rocky Fast Cruise office in Sanur and afterwards you are brought to the beach where the boat is anchored.

Rocky Fast Cruise to Nusa Lembongan

At the time, we paid for our tickets in person when we checked in, however, you can now save time by booking online in advance on the Rocky Fast Cruise website . There is no dock so you put your shoes in the large buckets and wade in the water a few feet from the shore to get onto the boat. The staff were very helpful giving an extra hand to parents carrying kids on and off the boat.

Arriving at Nusa Lembongan

The boat is enclosed with windows and bench style seating and the life jackets (young children’s sizes included) are kept under the seats if required. At only 30 minutes, the ride goes by very quickly and soon enough, we were watching as the boat pulled into the gorgeous turquoise waters of Jungut Batu bay.

NusaLembongan014

Jungut Batu Beach

The coastline of the village of Jungut Batu on Nusa Lembongan is lined with hotels and restaurants overlooking the stunning, crystal clear water.

Nusa Lembongan Jungut Batu

Jungut Batu is one of the main arrival and departure points for boats at Nusa Lembongan. We came off the boat to a similar setup as Sanur, stepping into the water a few feet away from shore, retrieving our shoes and making our way to the row of offices along the beach to rent a golf buggy.

Day Trip Nusa Lembongan

There are several shops selling fruit, drinks and snacks along the beach and sidewalk at Jungut Batu.

Day Trip Nusa Lembongan Jungut Batu

We stocked up on some bananas, peanuts and water at a small stand before renting a golf buggy to head south to visit some of Nusa Lembongan’s picturesque beaches.

NusaLembongan017

How to Get Around Nusa Lembongan

There are no rental cars or taxis on Nusa Lembongan and the hilly terrain is not ideal for leisure cycling. Most people get around Nusa Lembongan on scooters or, for larger groups, on covered pickup trucks with a tour guide. For the three of us, hiring a golf buggy was the best solution to explore the island on our own.

NusaLembongan005

Visitors can book an Island Buggy in advance for a full day hire with prices starting at 800,000 IDR – more details here . The offices to pick up the golf buggies are a short walk from where you will disembark from the fast boat at Jungut Batu beach. There is a steep hill heading out of Jungut Batu, so do keep that in mind and strap your bags down very well if you’re taking a golf cart!

Dream Beach Nusa Lembongan

Dream Beach is one of the most famous beaches on Nusa Lembongan and a popular area for surfing. There are several resorts and restaurants nearby, some perched on the dramatic limestone cliffs, overlooking the beautiful white sandy beach.

NusaLembongan021

There’s a rocky coral floor and the surf is pretty strong at Dream Beach, so not an ideal swimming spot with young children, but it’s a beautiful spot to take in the view, watch the surfers and enjoy playing on the sand and along the shore.

NusaLembongan022

Devil’s Tears

Devil’s Tears is a set of rocky, dramatic cliffs where huge waves crash against the sides, sending water spraying over the edge. The views at Devil’s Tears are stunning and it was amazing to watch the powerful waves crash against the cliffs.

NusaLembongan001

Mushroom Beach

After checking out the island’s dramatic coastline, we headed back in the direction of Jungut Batu to spend the rest of our afternoon at the calmer waters of Mushroom Beach.

Mushroom Beach, Nusa Lembongan

We had lunch at Hai’s Beach Bar & Grill  which overlooks the beach – perfect for Little T to play while we waited for the food. The food was really good and overall I found the restaurant and resort to be a great place to take a break during our day of exploring.

NusaLembongan010

Mushroom Beach is the calmest beach in the area for swimming and snorkelling with young children. There’s an area fit for swimming between one side of the beach with a very rocky floor and the other with boat traffic. Water shoes are must for swimming at Mushroom Beach to protect your feet from the broken coral pieces and rocky seafloor.

NusaLembongan008

On the other side of Mushroom Beach are these amazing rock formations along the shore.

NusaLembongan007

Fast Boat Cruise from Nusa Lembongan to Bali

After a wonderful day on Nusa Lembongan that went by way too quickly, we headed back to Jungut Batu to return the golf cart and take the 4.30pm fast boat back to Sanur. Little T chose a beautiful wooden turtle at a little souvenir shop next to the boat office which has been a lovely souvenir from our day trip to Nusa Lembongan.

NusaLembongan012

As with the departure from Sanur, everything ran very efficiently with Rocky Fast Cruise and the staff were always helpful with the passengers getting on and and off the boat.

Rocky Fast Cruise Boat, Nusa Lembongan

A storm was approaching that evening, so while the ride to Nusa Lembongan was relatively calm, we had rough seas heading back to Sanur. Remember to bring motion sickness tablets or wristbands if you suffer from sea sickness!

NusaLembongan013

A day trip to Nusa Lembongan from Bali is an amazing experience, offering breath-taking scenery from calm, turquoise waters to rocky, dramatic cliffs. There are plenty of outdoor adventures and water activities for the whole family to enjoy around the island, including going out to the famous snorkelling or scuba diving sites and visiting the seaweed farms. I’d highly recommend making the trip out there to visit during a Bali family holiday .

Day Trip Nusa Lembongan Tips

The only ATM / cash machine on the island is at Jungut Batu, near the Segara Temple and only a few minutes away from the boat offices. I would, however, recommend arriving on the island with cash – the ATM has been known to run out of money halfway through the day and the queue was over half an hour long.

Another reason to bring cash: the credit card terminals aren’t very reliable and can take an extremely long time to process your debit/credit card after several attempts. To save yourself time, withdraw cash on Bali to bring on your trip.

Remember to pack along water shoes or other protective shoes for the beach. Mushroom Beach in particular is rocky and covered with small bits of coral along the shoreline.

Nusa Lembongan Dream Beach

[Updated December 2021] Rocky Fast Cruise departure times from Sanur are currently 10am and 1pm; return times from Lembongan are 11am and 4pm. Due to Covid-19, there is currently a reduced “pandemic” rate of 350000 IDR (approx US $25) for an adult return ticket and 100000 IDR (approx US $14) for a child return ticket. (Pre-Covid prices were typically US $50 per adult for return (US $30 for one way), children 3-11 years old US $30 for return ($20 one way) and children under 3 years old travel free.)

Prices include insurance and bottled water, as well as free pick up and drop off from the airport, Jimbaran, Kuta, Seminyak, Legian and Sanur. Other areas are quoted upon request. Up to date schedule, ticket prices and other details here.

You can also book a golf buggy in advance for a full day hire with prices starting at 800,000 IDR – more details here . Note that you cannot cross the suspension bridge between Nusa Lembongan and the nearby smaller island of Nusa Ceningan with the golf buggy – only scooters are allowed to cross that bridge.

How to Get to Nusa Lembongan

Getting to Nusa Lembongan is the easiest of the three Nusa islands.

From Bali: There are two ways to get to Lembongan from Bali: by fast boat or by slow boat. The fast boat to Lembongan is the more costly of the two and is obviously faster. Scoot and Rocky Fast Cruises sell tickets that include transfers to and from your accommodation.

It’s often cheaper if you head down to the harbour and buy a ticket for the next boat. The fast boats leave from Sanur on Bali and costs 250,000-300,000 one-way. The slow boat to Nusa Lembongan is a local ferry to Nusa Lembongan that also departs from Sanur and costs between 60,000-150,000 depending on which type of local boat you take.

From Nusa Penida: To reach Lembongan just hop on a short 15-minute boat from Nusa Penida at the Toya Pakeh harbour. Locals will be there asking if you need a ride and boats leave when they’re full. A ride costs 50,000.

Getting Around Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is popular for tours, many of which include transfers from Bali. You can opt to do a tour or you can easily do the island on your own. The entire island is only 8 square metres and the roads are a mix between paved and some that are filled with speed potholes. If you have some experience driving you can drive here, just take it easy.

Bike rentals are 60,000 for a day. It will take you about 25 minutes max to drive across the entire island.

Nusa Lembongan Itinerary

Since Nusa Lembongan is so small the entire island can be done in a day, however I recommend staying for a least a night so you have time to chill out on multiple beaches and catch sunset.

DAY ONE: Start your morning at the Mangrove Forest before all of the day trips come in from Bali. You can also spend some time free diving or snorkelling here. Then make your way a beach to hangout. On the way you’ll pass Panorama point were you can see the entire island. After 4PM checkout Dream Beach, Devil’s Tear and the Rock Pools for less crowds and to catch sunset as the colours reflect on the water.

DAY TWO: Spend half of the day exploring Nusa Ceningan and the other half chilling out on another beach, snorkelling from Mushroom Bay, jumping on a snorkel trip or simply just relaxing with some yoga or a massage.

If you don’t have a lot of time or don’t want to see the island on your own it is very popular to do a Nusa Lembongan day trip that will cover all of the islands highlights.

Dream Beach

Dream Beach is the most popular beach on the island, making it the busiest. All of the beaches are pretty similar but the draw to this one is the pool at the resort that gives you great views. There’s also a cute spot with a swing to snap some pictures. Make sure you visit here after 4PM when all of the day trippers are gone. It will be packed during the day! It is possible to swim here as well.

Devil’s Tear

When searching for what to do on Nusa Lembongan Devil’s Tear is almost always the first suggestion. About a 5-minute walk from Dream Beach is Devil’s Tear which is the main water attraction on the island.

Here waves will crash up against the cliffs and water will spray and mist into the air, giving you a break from the heat and some cool shots. Make sure you head around the corner on both sides as there are more attractions and spots with less people.

The Rock Pools are just to the right of Devil’s Tear and are a great spot to catch sunset as the colours of it will reflect on the water. You’ll want to visit here during low tides as the waves can be quite powerful and will pull you in if you get too close to the edge.

Personally I think Sandy Bay is one of the best things to do in Nusa Lembongan. It’s a secluded cover that has perfect white sand and feels like a private beach. It’s small and is free to go to but you can not swim here because of the rocks. There is also a beach club that has a pool overlooking the beach, comfy lounge chairs and bean bags.

Jungut Batu Beach

Chances are your accommodation will be by this beach as it’s the main stretch along the island. It is also the most popular place to watch sunset. Some of the best places to watch sunset from are The Deck, Blue Corner and Muntigs. You can walk along the entire beach and you’ll find everything from restaurants to massages and ferry tickets.

Mushroom Bay

This is a family-friendly area with restaurants and a beach club. It’s also the main spot where snorkeling boats take off from. Swimming is possible here but there are quite a few boats. Here you can also rent snorkel equipment and check it out for yourself!

Mangrove Forest

It’s worth checking out the Mangrove Forest for a little bit of time in nature. A guide can take you on a local boat through the mangroves where you can float between the trees and have pure silence. In this area you can also book snorkelling or free diving.

A boat trip through the mangroves is 50,000 per person but you gotta bargain! I got that price no problem at the last place on the road.

Panorama Point

This viewpoint offers a view over the entire island and is where you can really take in its small size. It’s free and is not super easy to spot as its just some gravel on the side of the road between Mushroom Bay and Jungut Beach. The easiest way to find it is by looking up the Panorama restaurant on Google Maps which is also a good spot for sunset!

Snorkel and Dive

Snorkeling and diving are some of the top things to do in Lembongan. Many boats will head over to Nusa Penida where it’s even more popular but there is still plenty to see when Nusa Lembongan snorkeling.

Yoga Classes or a Yoga Retreat

There are multiple yoga studios on the island and with Nusa Lembongan’s chilled back vibe, it’s the ideal place for you to come to your mat, relax and flow.

Drop-in classes are available at the studios such as Serenity Yoga Lembongan , Yoga Bliss Lembongan , Yoga Shack Lembongan and more.

But if you prefer to fully immerse yourself into relaxation and perhaps strengthening for a few days then a yoga retreat is a great option! Some of the studios offer retreats just for yoga, for yoga and surfing and other activities such as snorkelling.

Nusa Ceningan

A trip to Nusa Lembongan is not complete without a visit to Nusa Ceningan! It only takes a half day to explore this little island which is even smaller than Nusa Lembongan. You can access Ceningan from Lembongan by crossing over the yellow bridge by walking or biking. The star attractions on this island are cliff jumping, stunningly blue waters and plenty of places to just chill.

You’ve booked your Sanur Bali trip. You’ve chosen your Sanur Accommodation . You’ve checked out the best places to eat in S anur.  and even what to do in Sanur . Now it’s time to explore the rest of Bali from Sanur.

While there are lots of things to do in Sanur, there is so much to see once you venture out into the countryside of Bali.

You don’t have to stay on land either as some of the best Bali boat trips leave from the shores of Sanur. You can easily do a day trip from Sanur to the outer islands of Nusa Lembongan , Nusa Penida , Nusa Ceningan and also the Gili Islands.

Day trips from Sanur

Sanur Bali Day Tours

You can organise your own Bali day trips, join Bali day tours from group travel or hire your own Bali tour guide .

If you haven’t been to Sanur or other places in Bali before, you can’t help but come across a private driver. They are renowned for their “transport, transport” as you walk past them in the street.

They will take you anywhere you want to go in Bali. So you can design your own Bali private tour specifically to what you would like to see and do throughout Bali.

We are here to help and show you some of the things to do in Bali once you’ve worked out what to do in Sanur.

Things to see on your Sanur Bali Day tours

Snorkeling Bali

Snorkeling Sanur is fairly non-existent as Sanur beach and the bay is protected by a reef. The sandy bottom of the bay leaves nothing to see but a whole lot of sand and seagrass.

You’ll have to venture up the coast to see the best snorkeling in Bali or out to one of the islands off Sanur.

Again you can hire a driver and do your own thing or you can take a Bali snorkeling tour on one of the boats heading out to the islands.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Snorkeling Nusa Penida

For this day trip from Sanur, you’ll need to catch a fast boat to Nusa Penida. The fast boat trip from Sanur to Nusa Penida will take approximately 45 minutes.

You can snorkel and swim with Manta Rays at Manta Bay (weather permitting). Other snorkeling spots on Penida are Cyrstal Bay and Mangrove Point. These are 3 of the best snorkeling spots on the island.

On this day trip, you can also go kayaking, try stand-up paddleboarding and or hire a private gondola. The day trip also includes an Indonesian buffet for lunch and free pickup from your Sanur hotel. If you are not staying in Sanur they also pick you up from Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Sanur and Canggu. Ubud pickups are an extra 330,000 rp return.

Places to snorkel Nusa Penida

Lembongan Snorkeling

Snorkeling tours to Nusa Lembongan also leave from Sanur Harbour.

On this tour, you’ll also visit Gamut Bay although the exact locations are decided on the day. This is due to the swell, water conditions and weather. Trust me you won’t want to snorkeling in any swells or low visibility water. It’s best left up to the experts on the day.

Crossing time from Sanur to Lembongan is approximately 30 minutes. The tour company has the same deal for Lembongan as they do for Penida. Free pickups and drop back to your accommodation. A buffet lunch is also included.

Nusa Penida Tour

A Nusa Penida day trip is one of the most popular day trips from Bali. It’s an easy and fun day to get away from mainland Bali.

All you need to do is be ready in your hotel lobby by the specified time. A driver will pick you up and drop you at Sanur Harbour where a short 45-minute fast boat ride will take you to Nusa Penida.

If you are prone to motion sickness or travel sickness keep an eye on the weather. Take appropriate precautions that suit you. I’ve written about travel and motion sickness here and what measures you can take.

I’ve mentioned this as although the bay between Sanur and Penida is flat and protected by ocean swells it can be rough. Personally, I’ve never experienced large swells travelling between islands. However, it does become rough on occasion.

As previously mentioned, you can take a snorkeling tour Nusa Penida or there is also a private full-day tour to Nusa Penida too.

On the private tour, you’ll land at Toyapakeh, visit Kelingking Beach, Pasih Uug (Broken Beach) and the natural pool of Angel’s Billabong.

There is also an option for a drone pilot to accompany you to shoot footage of your private tour. Perfect for those Instagram shots.

We hope you enjoy your day trip to Nusa Penida.

Lembongan Island Tour

We’ve covered how to get to Nusa Lembongan in the snorkeling Lembongan section above. Like most of the islands off the coast of Bali, it’s by fast boat.

You can take a Lembongan day trip by yourself or you can take a Reef and Lembongan Island day trip.

Climb aboard a luxury catamaran and enjoy a whole day of fun-filled activities. Including cultural walks, coral viewing, snorkeling and more.

This Nusa Lembongan day trip leaves from Benoa harbour and moors at a pontoon in the beautiful turquoise waters of Lembongan island Bali.

Hotel transfers, return transfers to Lembongan Bay are included. As is morning and afternoon tea and drinks. Lunch is an international buffet.

Also included is a Lembongan village excursion, unlimited banana boat rides a water slide, a semi-submersible coral viewer, insurance and much more.

Sanur to Lembongan

I’m going to cover a few key points you need to know about how to get to Lembongan Island from Bali.

Up until recently, you had to be prepared to get a little wet as there are no jetties at Sanur or Lembongan. However, now there are jetties that make for easier embarking and disembarking.

Don’t worry there are plenty of porters to help you on and off the boat at both ends. They will help you with your luggage too if you are ditching the day trip idea and opting for a longer stay.

Porters are generally very good with your luggage, although you may find yours on the bottom of the pile. There are no guarantee’s everything in your luggage will make it in one piece. That’s travel though, isn’t it? The same could happen with the baggage handlers at the airport.

Other than a Nusa Lembongan tour you can book your return ticket on a fast boat or the Nusa Lembongan ferry and wing it once you are there. I don’t recommend this though for your first visit to Nusa Lembongan Island as most of the island has dirt roads.

If you want only a fast boat to Nusa Lembongan tickets click here for more information and to book.

There is a slow boat or public ferry to Nusa Lembongan. The ferry departs every day from Sanur Beach at 10.30am right in front of the Ananda Hotel. Or depending on the ride newar the Grand Inna Bali Beach Hotel.

The ticket counter is at the end of Hang Tuah Strret, Sanur. However, note – there is no same-day return trip.

The boat departs from Nusa Lembongan at 8am. The ride from Sanur to Lembongan is approximately 90 minutes.

Day trips from Sanur to Amed Bali

Snorkeling Amed Bali

It’s a couple of hours’ drive to Amed but well worth the drive. You’ll step back in time and discover the Bali of old.

The main road is a potholed dusty one-lane road.

The coastline has spectacular scenery easily viewed from the hilly roads that meander along the west coast.

Either hire your own private driver or go with a small group tour for this East Bali snorkeling day trip to Amed.

Snorkeling in Amed Bali

USS Liberty

In 1942 a Japanese submarine torpedoed a US Army transport ship The Liberty. The Liberty now sits around 30m offshore, clearly seen from the top of the water.

You’ll find this shipwreck about 20mins drive north of Amed at Tulamben.

It’s well worth a day trip from Sanur as it’s easy to access from the coastline and you’ll see lots of soft coral and fish as the Liberty sits just 3 meters below.

Included in this tour are lunch and a guide. Be sure and take your own towel as one isn’t provided.

Tulamben Diving

If you’ve always wanted to learn to dive this could be a perfect time.

Perfect for a number of reasons.

  • The dive site is close to the shore
  • The wreck is just under the surface of the water
  • It’s in a safe environment
  • No large sharks to worry about 😊

I say that light-heartedly as the fear of sharks kept me out of the water and stopped me from diving for many years. It really is an amazing experience to see beautiful corals, fish and other sea creatures in their natural habitat. Go on, give it a go!

Best Things To Do In Ubud Bali

One of the best day trips from Sanur is to Ubud in central Bali. It’s close, Sanur to Ubud is only around 50 minute’s drive, depending on the time of day and the traffic of course.

In this section, we’ll cover a 1-day itinerary to Ubud. Plus, we’ll show you a one-day Bali tour or two on organised tours if you don’t want to organise your own.

An Ubud tour might just be the tour you are looking for so you can explore what to do in Ubud. Or you may prefer to look into things to see in Ubud and take part in some of the fun activities in the surrounding area.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Private Ubud Day Tour

If you don’t want to go on an organised day tour the next best thing is to organise your own.

This way you can do this is to hiring a driver for the day and having your own customised tour of Bali.

Trust me it won’t be difficult to find a private Bali driver. Most likely they will find you first. They do this by calling out to you in the street as you walk by. “Transport, transport.” Is the usual.

You’ll have to negotiate a price as 1) it’s expected and 2) It’s almost a National sport in Bali.

If you don’t want to negotiate or prefer a trusted driver we have you covered. We’ve partnered with a trusted company where you can read reviews and get up-to-date information.

Things to see in Ubud Art Market

Ubud Art Market

If shopping is your thing or even if you are slightly curious about the Balinese culture the Ubud Art Market is definitely worth a visit.

Your driver will drop you off, just arrange a pickup time and place and he’ll be there. In fact, there have been many times we’ve been on the lookout for our drivers and they seem to magically appear from nowhere. So don’t worry about losing him.

There are two parts to the Art Market in Ubud with the second part downstairs, the wet markets.

You’ll see all types of crafts including pashmina, sarongs, rattan baskets, kites, hats, handicrafts, gorgeous silk scarves and jewellery. This is a short version of what you will find there.

One word of advice if you see something you love, buy it. Sometimes you can never find the same item again, no matter where you look.

Remember to bargain, it’s all part of the fun. You’ll generally pay around 50% of the first price mentioned. Unless you are the first customer of the day and then you may get a special “morning price”. This is a sign for the stallholder of good luck for the rest of the day. Win-win for you both.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Ubud Monkey Forest

Mandala Suci Wenara Wana as it’s known to the Balinese, or Monkey Forest Ubud, is a natural sanctuary for monkeys.

Personally, I haven’t been there as I don’t like monkeys much as I was bitten at a young age. I have walked past though and it’s a beautiful cool environment.

The Monkey Forest is just over 25 acres. It has over 100 species of trees, 3 Temples and a number of trails you can walk through to explore the forest.

You can view the stream running through part of the forest area, and visit the public hall, the canteen and the conservation area.

There is also a first aid centre. Unfortunately, this is used on a daily basis by visitors that have encountered an aggressive monkey. To minimise any contact with monkeys, do not carry or offer them any food.

Put your sunglasses and hat in a zippered bag. Hold on tightly to your phone and cameras as they have been known to grab them from unsuspecting tourists.

There are over 700 monkeys in the habitat. They are territorial with each of the 6 main groups of monkeys reining over certain areas of the forest. Follow the simple observations outlined above and you’ll be fine.

We haven’t provided the information to alarm you, more to prepare you.

Dragon Bridge in Monkey Forest in Ubud

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

Not a monkey insight here, well there wasn’t the day we visited.

The most popular rice fields in Bali are 10 km north of Ubud, so around a 15-minute drive. Depending on the traffic.

It’s definitely worth a visit, (do so early before the tourist buses turn up). The scenery is Instaworthy and breathtakingly beautiful.

You can wander in these rice terraces to grab that Insta shot if you have an account. Or you can take it up a notch and have a shot at the most popular Bali Swing that is close by.

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Sukawati Markets

On your way to or from Ubud ask your driver to swing by Sukawati Markets .

Generally, the art market areas don’t open until later in the morning, around 10 am. So it might be best to visit in the afternoon on your return to Sanur.

Why visit Sukawati if you are visiting the Art Market Ubud? The diversity and price. It’s cheaper at Sukawati than most markets in Bali either on the coast from Kuta to Canggu or Ubud.

You’ll find beautiful oil paintings and wooden carvings at Sukawati. Anything from Buddha’s to a 5ft high sea scene featuring dolphins, turtles and fish. Most of the work is brilliant.

You can also find general market stores for clothing, flower markets and wet markets at Sukawati.

Cycling Tour Ubud

There are several cycling tours in Ubud . Some needing to peddle power and some use e-bikes or electric bikes.

The durations vary too from 1 hour to several hours so depending on what you wanted to see and do in Ubud would depend on the tour you select.

Whichever tour you select you’ll be guaranteed of getting off the usual tourist path and exploring the culture and beauty of Bali.

Make sure you wear a helmet and follow all the safety guidelines you’ll be given before you head off on your tour. Take plenty of water and sunscreen too. Although Ubud has cooler temperatures than the coastal areas of Bali, the sun is still harsh.

White Water Rafting Bali

We’ve been white water rafting in Bali a few times and loved it each time.

Don’t be concerned about tackling difficult rapids, falling out of your raft or getting hurt. The water isn’t that fierce down the Ayung River.

Or it hasn’t been the times we’ve gone rafting.

A certain fitness level is required though, to either walk down to the river or climb up from the river.

If you don’t have a level of fitness your quads and calf muscles will be sore. That said, people who were fit still had muscle soreness for a couple of days too. However, it’s totally worth it, so go and have some fun!

Having done most of these activities and tours in Bali, I can’t understand why more people visiting don’t get out of Kuta or Seminyak to discover the “real Bali”. I’m going to share this very comprehensive post so my friends can see it. It’s the best guide of what to do in Bali ever!

Wow, Kathy thanks very much for your feedback! Coming from fellow travel writer and blogger that means a lot. The feedback is also good as I did wonder if I waffled on a bit. There’s lots more I could add. Perhaps that will be a future post

What a great guide Annette. We love Bali but haven’t been to Sanur. I’ve been more of an Ubud girl, but there’s still so much more to discover. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

Thanks Jo, my pleasure. Yes there is so much to discover about beautiful Bali outside of the usual haunts. We might see you in Sanur one day 😀

  • Pingback: Best Spa in Sanur | Sanur Bali Guide

We’ve stayed in Sanur a few times on our visits to Bali and always enjoyed it. This post shows why it’s such a great place to stay in Bali and is in easy reach of some of the island’s best attractions and things to do. I’ll be doing the bike tour on our next visit.

Exactly Nina, it a great place as other areas are so accessible. The bike tours are great!

We enjoyed our week in Bali. One of the big draws of Bali for us would be snorkelling and scuba diving. I was sick on our first visit so missed doing this. So great to know that we can easily do a day trip to do this from Sanur. Boat trips to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan sound perfect for us. We had a private driver in Bali and it was the best investment we made. A luxury catamaran trip around Nusa Lembongan might also be a great idea. Thanks for the new great ideas for day trips.

You are welcome Linda. Private Drivers are definitely the way to go. So easy!

I like the idea of having your own Bali driver to be a chauffeur and tour guide. That way you can take your time with the sights and not have to stress about catching a ride every time you stop. As long as you find one that you feel comfortable with. Gosh it all looks so beautiful. I’ve always wanted to see the gorgeous rice terraces in real life!

Hiring a private driver is the way to go. You then can have a lot of input and flexibility. The rice terraces are stunning, you won’t be disappointed.

Ok, I am sold! I so want to come out here and explore EVERYTHING. The islands look beautiful and I can see myself relaxing on the beach while my kids can swim in the sea but what is more appealing for me is the trekking, seeing waterfalls and seeing the rice terrace. I love nature and would prefer to be there instead of the city life.

Sanur and Bali in general will be perfect for you if you love nature. Hopefully we will see you on the beaches of Sanur soon!

It seems that there is not really that much to do in Sanur and everything—waterfalls, rice terraces, snorkeling, diving, etc. are nearer Ubud. So should we stay in Ubud?

We find there is plenty to do in Sanur, however, it does depend on what you like to do and what you like to see. Best diving and snorkeling is off the east coast, especially from Sanur. Sanur still has my vote over Ubud, as Ubud is now very busy and more commercialised for us.

I’ve been to Bali a few times and my favourite place is Ubud. I love the peaceful feel of the rice paddies and people are really nice. I haven’t been to Nusa Penida though. I know it’s touristy but it looks amazing!

The people are so lovely in Bali and Ubud is a beautiful part. Nusa Penida looks gorgeous doesn’t it, however, the roads are atrocious I hear.

I am looking forward to going back to Bali again next year with family this time. There is just so much to do and see and with some organisation and planning they are all easy to do too. We didn’t stay in Sanur but I think any of the main areas are great for tripping around the island. We didn’t get round to visiting Nusa Penida last time either but instead went to Lombok and the Gilis, so we will do that this trip!

Sanur is a great place to use for a base as it’s easier to get in and out as the traffic isn’t as congested as the western towns of Kuta, Legion, Seminyak, etc. The Gilis are beautiful to visit too.

Your post makes me want to hop a plane and return to Bali. I went to rejuvenate and mostly stayed near Ubud, hired a driver and explored the temples and rice terraces. Would just love to base myself in Sanur and visit the islands.

Thanks Alison, I know what you mean about hoping on a plane! Sanur certainly is a great base.

Sanur sounds wonderful and I think I will stay there next time I go to Bali. I would love to see the rice terraces on the cycling tour. A waterfall tour with a personal driver would be something I would love also. Lots of great tips here which will come in handy.

Thanks Tania, hopefully, we’ll see you on the beaches of Sanur soon!

Wow, there are so many options!! I haven’t been to Indonesia so I sort of want to do all of them (except the monkey forest, I think I’ll pass on that haha). The rice fields in particular sounds so cool, and the waterfalls look beautiful!!

I’m sure you’d love seeing all that Bali has to offer. I have to agree with passing on the Monkey Forest…but that’s just me 😉

Thanks for sharing great trips from Sanur. Nusa Penida day trip being the most popular day trips from Bali would be my first choice to do this. You have taken beautiful photos of all the places.

Thanks Yukti. Yes the Nusa Penida is definitely a popular choice.

Hi Annette, Great guide. I have booked my first trip to Bali in September 2020. Flights and accomadtion have been booked. My first week is in UBUD for a cultural experience and the 2nd week in Sanur for a more beachy holiday. I am travelling solo and will be 65 then, but fortunately a youngish 65! So I like travelling around a bit. Is there any tips you can give to a first time traveller to Bali. Obviously I will keep looking at this site from time to time to keep my mind open on what is best. Trips restaurants etc. THANKS

Hi Michael and/or Robert You’ll fit right into the scene of Ubud and Sanur being a youngish 65, you’ve chosen well! I’m currently working on a long post that will answer most if not all of your questions about Sanur and Bali. It’s loaded with stacks of tips that you are asking about. Stay tuned, the post will be live between Christmas and New Year. You can always join our Facebook group to stay up-to-date and ask questions there too. https://facebook.com/SanurBaliTravelPlanning

We were charged an extra $90 upon arrival to the island, only for us to spend 2 hours on a boat and spend a maximum of 20 minutes snorkeling. Staff were completely unhelpful and rude, refused to compensate in any way. There was myself and my partner as well as a group of 10 who also expressed our disappointment. Do not recommend. We only went to 3 points and it lasted 20-30 min each so not really the time to enjoy to me. The afternoon will mainly be waiting time at the restaurant. The good point is that we saw mantas. The snorkelling was amazing; clear waters, colourful fish, a sea turtle and an awesome session with Manta rays! Getting there from Bali mainland takes a while and the speedboat transfer feels quite exhausting. The ventilation in the speedboat was not great and we had 45min waiting time on the speedboat before departure. Yet, overall I would repeat the day trip definitely again! Last year due to the swell conditions we didn't get to see the manta ray, however still had a great experience. This year we got to see the manta ray. The experience is only made all the better by the amazing staff Wayan, Harry & Putu. Lunch is amazing, would recommend the island tour over kayaking in the mangroves It was great to see the company also making improvements with a new island tour vehicle, new stage and acoustic guitar player at lunch, as well as new snorkels, masks & fins. We got picked up on time at our hotel and taken to the ferry terminal where the friendly staff had everything organised and provided free waters on hot day. After getting off the ferry on Lembognan the set up is brilliant. Walk through the restaurant where you leave your bags in safe lockers and straight onto the snorkelling boat out the back of the restaurant, so easy. Then the boat crew who were professional and great fun and great with kids brought us out to see the mantas and other amazing snorkelling spots. Very well run and great value. Its a must do ! • mariejol901 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Big waves and jellyfish The sea was rough that day, probably because it's rainny season. It was a bumpy ride to go to the snorkeling spots from the mangrove, it was a little scary. We felt rushed, the captain was driving fast. The brought us to a special spot more far away because manta bay was not a good idea that day and we actually were able to swim with mantas. The buffet was good, everybody there seemed to have paid the same price (about 50 CAD), the kayak in the mangroves was not really worth it and we got unlucky because there were many jellyfish at the other spots, so we didnt snorkel that much but it was good anyway. How to Travel from Bali to Nusa Lembongan by Boat

day trip to nusa lembongan from sanur

Konstantin Trubavin / Getty Images

Deciding how to get from Bali—famous for its beaches, mountains, and religious sites—to Nusa Lembongan, a smaller island in Indonesia, 34 miles (55 kilometers) to the southeast, is a choice between speed and price. Nusa Lembongan has no airport or pier; you'll have to take a boat and at least get your feet wet before relaxing at its beautiful beaches.

Some of the speedboat options cut the 90-minute journey to around 30 minutes, but you’ll have to pay for the horsepower. A majority of boats leave from Sanur in southeast Bali and cross the Badung Strait to Nusa Lembongan. Public and Perama boats can also help you make the journey. Several boats leave each day, so if bad weather is hitting, it's best to play it safe and not board.

How to Get from Bali to Nusa Lembongan

  • Public Boat: 90 minutes, from $4 (budget-friendly)
  • Perama Boat: 90 minutes, from $12
  • Speedboat: 35 minutes, from $19 (fastest)

Most boats arrive on the beach at Jungut Batu, the most developed part of the island. A handful of smaller companies operate speedboats that end up in Mushroom Bay on the southwestern corner of the island. Although there are sometimes boats departing from Padangbai in East Bali, the most convenient way to get to Nusa Lembongan is from Sanur Beach. Tickets usually include pickup at your hotel in Bali and drop off at your hotel in Nusa Lembongan. You can book directly at the travel offices or through your hotel reception desk.

Many of the boat transfer options involve passengers wading to the boat at Bali and ashore at Nusa Lembongan. Although boat staff will gladly lend a hand—and take care of your luggage—you’ll need enough mobility to wade in knee-deep water (sometimes thigh-deep in choppy conditions) and climb a step or two onto the boat. Plan to get a little wet or even knocked down by waves while getting on and off the boat. Take precautions with your wallet, phone, and passport (a damaged passport can be refused at border crossings), or opt for a smaller speedboat that can back closer onto the beach. Companies often collect shoes at the beach and give them back afterward, so you’ll have to wade ashore barefooted, but the sand is soft.

During inclement weather in the monsoon season , sea conditions can become unpleasantly choppy. If you’re prone to seasickness, consider postponing your visit to Nusa Lembongan.

Numerous companies with varying costs and safety procedures run speedboats to Nusa Lembongan. Most depart from the beach in Sanur throughout the day. Even if you’ve missed one of the scheduled boats, you’ll have several options for a ride. Scoot Fast Cruises is a popular service that runs between Bali, Nusa Lembongan, and Lombok. The speedboats take 35 minutes and cost around $19 one way. You’ll find their office on Jalan Hang Tuah, a short walk from the beach.

Budget-conscious travelers like the Perama boat; service includes hotel pickup and drop off. The sizable ferry departs from Sanur and takes around 90 minutes. Find the Perama office in Kuta on the southern end of Jalan Legian, or in Sanur on Jalan Hang Tuah a short walk from where the boats leave on the beach.

An even cheaper option is the public local boat which departs from Sanur and runs from 60 to 90 minutes. However, the boat isn't recommended for families with children as it's crowded and passenger safety is questionable.

On Nusa Lembongan, luggage will be typically be offloaded from the boat and shoes returned. Passengers are pooled into truck taxis (like Indonesia’s famous bemos , or open-air minibuses, also called angkot ) with bench seats. Some hotels and guesthouses could be out of range or down inaccessible roads. You’ll be driven as close as possible to your accommodation then expected to walk the rest of the way. If drop-off service wasn’t included in your ticket, flag down taxi trucks which circulate the island, especially between popular areas. Prices are relatively fixed , although you may be able to negotiate a little.

From Lombok to Nusa Lembongan

Scoot Fast Cruises operates high-speed boats from Lombok, an island east of Bali (Senggigi) and Gili Trawangan (the largest of the Gili Islands ). The journey takes about three hours and costs start at $42.

To and From Nusa Penida

Nusa Lembongan’s bigger, quieter neighbor, Nusa Penida, is only about 20 minutes away. Small public boats leave from Jungut Batu on the west coast or sometimes from near the big yellow suspension bridge that connects Nusa Ceningan. Costing about $3, the boats go when filled and often appear to be loaded way beyond safe capacity. During busy times, other boats may be chartered for tourists. You may find yourself sitting on a box of veggies or a stack of rice bags.

Essential Travel Information

  • Most packaged tickets will take you to the door of your hotel or guesthouse on Nusa Lembongan. If you don’t have a room reserved yet, have an idea of which beach or area to tell the driver.
  • Internet and mobile data access aren’t completely reliable on Nusa Lembongan, so book and research while in Bali. The same applies to the ATM on the island—get enough cash from the machines in Bali.
  • Your luggage will be loaded onto the boats by porters. Prep bags for some light abuse and a potential splashing. Crushproof fragile items in case your bag ends up at the bottom of the pile.
  • If you didn’t buy an open-ended return ticket before coming to Nusa Lembongan, approach any of the tour/boat companies along Jungut Batu. Booking a boat ticket back will only get you to Sanur Beach on Bali. Once there, you can walk the short distance to the Perama counter on Jalan Hang Tuah to find a van or minibus to Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud , Amed, or other parts of the island. Alternatively, negotiate with one of the waiting drivers. Some of these boat companies will inflate the return fare so try for a discount by asking bisa kurang? ( which sounds like: “bee-sah koo-rong”) with a smile.

What to See in Nusa Lembongan

At only 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) long, the hilly Nusa Lembongan can be easily explored on foot, with roads connecting tourists to various attractions. One of the main villages on the island is Jungut Batu, where most eateries, accommodations, and other tourist services are located and visitors enjoy colorful sunsets and surfing spots. Mushroom Beach is a family-friendly, relaxing place with restaurants along the strip. At Devil’s Tears, you can see the water crashing into the cliffs and spraying into the air, turtles, tide pools, and lovely sunsets. Here and at nearby Dream Beach, adventurers jump off cliffs—which should always be done with caution, especially on days with high swells. Going on a snorkeling or scuba diving tour is another way to enjoy the island and hopefully see the ocean's creatures such as manta rays.

  • Meander31942862564 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles 20 minutes snorkeling for $200 This was a terrible experience. • marcsF2272DA 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing snorkelling with Manta rays Excellent day trip with Wayan Ana and his team. Very entertaining team, ensuring a great and safe experience.
