Driving a Ferrari in Italy – The Ultimate Ferrari Experience

When you think of luxury Italian cars, three legendary names come to mind, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati. Which one is the best? In a heartbeat, I say, Ferrari! What is there not to love about Ferrari cars? In my opinion, Ferraris are the sexiest car on the planet.

For some, owning a Ferrari is only a dream, a SWEET dream, but that is all – definitely just a dream for me. However, a dream we could make come true was driving a Ferrari in Italy! This was a huge  bucket list item on my very long list and I am happy to say, we were able to make my dream of driving a Ferrari in Italy come true! Let’s be honest, what could be more thrilling during a trip to Italy than driving a Ferrari?

2 Ways of Driving a Ferrari in Italy

Do you feel the need, the need for speed?!? Visitors yearning to drive a Ferrari in Italy can achieve this in two different ways – test drive on the open road or burn rubber on a race track. You really cannot go wrong with either choice. At the end of your driving experience, we bet your heart will be pounding and your hands shaking – mine sure did.

Driving a Ferrari on the Open Road

The two most popular cities to drive a Ferrari on the open road in Italy are Maranello  and Florence . The options are almost endless, you can drive a Ferrari for a duration of 2 miles (4km) to almost 14 miles (22km) or 10 minutes up to 2 hours! During your test drive, there will be an expert instructor guiding you through the rolling hills and winding roads of Italy. Hopefully watching out for police officers too, though we were told that the police typically let Ferraris go – that’s Italy for you! The longer your test drive, the longer your guided route will be. In some Ferrari models, you are also able to have an additional guest in the car (prices may occur).

Driving a Ferrari in Italy on the open road is for drivers wanting that luxury feel. Though you are driving in a sports car that can reach up to 208 mph, chances are you may not be reaching top speed because of the winding roads. However, you will be driving in Italy surrounded by beautiful landscapes. So I guarantee it will be the most blissful drive of your entire life.

Driving a Ferrari on a Race Track

For those wanting the most thrilling Ferrari experience, you need to drive on a race track . So pack your racing gloves because this motorsport experience is an adrenaline rush on steroids!

After a perfect day in Milan , we chose to fulfill my dream of driving a Ferrari in Italy at a race track just south of the city. So with that said, after enjoying a full day of sightseeing in Milan , driving a Ferrari at a nearby race track is the perfect way to finish a trip to Milan.

Driving a Ferrari in Italy on one of their many beautiful race tracks are for thrill seekers and car racing lovers. Though you have the track to yourself, driving on a race track is a completely different feeling than the open road. The open road is calm, whereas the race track is exhilarating. When you driving on the race track, you are not only driving a Ferrari in Italy, but you are also learning how to drive like a professional. Furthermore, you get to accelerate on the straightaways and truly feel the speed.

My Ferrari Driving Experience in Italy

We booked my Ferrari driving experience with Racing in Italy at the Castelletto Circuit – Motodromo Autodromo. The experience includes a 30-minute briefing of the race course, 1 lap in the passenger seat with the instructor driving, 3 laps driving the Ferrari 458 yourself and a video of your experience. The expert instructors do an excellent job of teaching the drivers how to drive on a race track. I learned very quickly that it is not just about turning the wheel in the right direction, but strategically braking and turning properly at every corner.

My instructor, Oren, drove the first few turns slowly so that I could learn and see the proper driving techniques. Then he drove fast and it was a lot of fun being in the passenger seat. After our first lap, I got into the driver seat and my real fun began. The first lap was all about getting acquainted and the jitters out. During every turn, Oren would guide me with the driving lingo so that I was properly making my sharp turns. The second time around I had a real groove going and by the third lap I let loose and tore up the track – well at least I tried to.

The straightaway is the best part of the track because you floor it until you have to brake. I was able to easily break 100mph within seconds! Surprinsgly, making the turns while driving fast was just as fun as accelerating on the straightaway. Overall the Castelletto Circuit was a great course, it’s a 1.2mile (2km) race track with 16 turns and a single 450meter straightaway. My only wish is that the straightaway was longer because I wanted more SPEED!

This was without a doubt, the most exhilarating experience of my life. When I was driving on the race track and flooring it after my turns, the sound of the Ferrari’s engine sounded like music to my ears. The adrenaline rush from the speed of the Ferrari alone was also very addicting. I cannot recommend this experience of driving a Ferrari in Italy at a race track enough. I walked away feeling like a pro.

The Cherry on Top

Another dream of mine had always been to model with a Ferrari supercar. What can I say? I LOVE Ferraris! So in addition to the best driving experience, I was also able to have a photo shoot with my Ferrari 458. My modeling career started and ended that day. Racing in Italy does a phenomenal job creating a personal experience for their guests.

Their package rate for this driving experience is very reasonable and worth every penny. I left Racing in Italy with one of the biggest smiles of my life and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Bonus Lap –  Visiting the Ferrari Museums

If you are like me and cannot get enough of Ferraris, then we recommend visiting the Ferrari Museums. There are two – one in Maranello and one in Modena. The museums are very close to each other, only 25 minutes away by car. So it is easy to enjoy both museums to make the most out of your ultimate Ferrari experience in Italy. You can visit on a  day trip from Bologna , Florence, Milan, or Venice. Furthermore, you can also combine your Ferrari experience with a special Modena food tour .

Enzo Ferrari Museum

The Enzo Ferrari Museum is located in Modena and focuses on Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the Ferrari sports car marque. The museum is comprised of two buildings, one is the house and workshop that belonged to Enzo Ferrari’s father and a newly designed building next door. It is only fitting that this museum showcases Enzo’s life and his work of building the best sports car manufacture in the world.

The house features an audio-visual show to tell the story of Enzo’s 90-year life. The workshop is a museum of Ferrari engines and the new building which boasts 65,000 ft has an extensive gallery displaying some of the most noteworthy Ferrari automobiles. Visitors can see some of Ferrari’s most rare cars from the 1950s, Formula One race cars, and today’s more recent sports cars.

Ferrari Museum

The Ferrari Museum is located in Maranello and focuses on the story and evolution of Ferrari automobiles. From the streets to the circuits this museum covers it all. Visitors can see the transition of Ferrari street cars by walking through the exhibit and viewing the beautiful models up close. From the hot red, to lightning yellow and cool blue – the museum showcases Ferrari cars in all of the luxury colors.

Another part of the museum showcases the Ferrari Formula One automobiles, the trophies won over the centuries, and photographs of some of the most notable Ferrari drivers.

Ferrari, Maserati & Lamborghini are all Italian and it is necessary to go see how it all works. Good you didn't go to Germany to drive an Audi! 😃 Ferraris are dear to Italians and these amazing works of performance art fit into the countryside. You made for yourselves a special experience. Your family enjoys an exciting destiny and bringing up children who appreciate different cultures provides them something valuable on their life paths. Venice is worth the trip, but you can't bring your Ferrari because there are no cars as it is all built on near to 120 islands! The Venezia Ferrari is a gondola boat moving fast through the canals! As we grow spiritually, soon we transition from desire fulfillment motivations to following truth. The most beautiful rumbling engine, is the power of life from where the universe arises. This engine never stops, never misleads and never grows old. The wonders of life all come from the source of life. As we enjoy our explorations and adventures in sense experience, it is important to develop as beings who look inward to our own hearts and find even greater awe.

I own #69907. I also go to Las Vegas every year to drive the latest models on a closed track. We are going to Italy soon. Driving the countryside there would be fun. Can you rent a Ferrari for more than a few hours? like days?

Quick question: Did you have to rent a car to get down there? Do you know if there are similar tracks in other Italian cities? (Some of the tracks I've looked at are SUPER expensive!)

We did have a car to get us to the race track outside of Milan. If you drive in Tuscany, they typically pick you up in Florence. And you can train to Modena and drive the Ferrari on their race track (I believe). I hope that helps.

Have you always wanted to drive a Ferrari? Here’s how to do it – we’ll tell you all about our amazing Ferrari driving experience in Italy, at the Modena Race Track! ***UPDATED 2023

My mother is from Modena, and Ferrari has always been part of our lives. I remember driving a radio-controlled Ferrari Testarossa in the late Eighties, and we weren’t allowed to cheer for anyone but Ferrari during Formula One tournaments. 

Nick is also a massive F1 fan, so when we got the opportunity to spend four days exploring the Motor Valley , the part of Emilia-Romagna where motoring companies like Ferrari, Ducati, Lamborghini, and Maserati have their headquarters, we jumped at the chance. 

And when we heard that a Ferrari driving experience was included in our programme… we literally jumped with joy. 

After visiting iconic Motor Valley sights like the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena , the Lamborghini Museum and Factory , and the Maserati Museum , we just couldn’t wait to drive a real Ferrari around a race track. 

The experience would be a little different from what we had imagined – but no less amazing. Read on to discover why!

Ferrari Driving Experience at the Modena Race Track

We reached the Modena Race Track early one late September morning. It was sunny but just a little misty, with wisps of fog rising from the valley, expanding as far as we could see. 

The Modena Race Track was built in 2011, to replace a former race track, the Aerautodromo di Modena, location of some of the first F2 races. The Aerautodromo di Modena was first born as an airport, and it was then used as a testing track by both Ferrari and Maserati. 

As the city grew around it, it was decommissioned in the 1970s, and it became a public park twenty years later.

The new Modena race track was planned specifically for test drives – it is 2068 meters long, with straight sections and a total of 11 turns. On the straight sections, drivers and passengers are able to ‘feel the speed’ of the supercars they’re in, and the turns allow them to test the incredible manoeuvrability of Ferrari and other supercars. 

In 2012, the Modena Race Track subscribed to an agreement to promote electric and sustainable mobility , with the aim of becoming the first carbon-neutral race track in Italy.

There’s actually a lot of research into sustainable technology in the world of supercars – the Lamborghini factory in nearby Sant’Agata Bolognese has been certified as carbon-neutral since 2015. I bet you didn’t expect that from a supercar manufacturer – and if you want to know more, make sure you visit and take a top secret Lamborghini factory tour!

Nowadays, the Modena Race Track organises a number of activities , including ‘green driving courses’ showing people how to maximise the use of fuel, motorbike courses, open days when people can come and drive their own car, and naturally, Ferrari test drives – the reason why we were all there.

The Car – Ferrari 458 Challenge

The Modena Race Track offers a variety of supercar driving experiences – so you can also opt for a Lamborghini , if you’re not a Ferrari person!

It’s possible to choose between a Ferrari 488 Challenge (their best car), Ferrari 458 Challenge, Ferrari 430 Challenge, Lamborghini Gallardo Trofeo, Lamborghini Huracan Trofeo , and KTM X-Bow. 

Our Ferrari driving experience was going to be in a Ferrari 458 Challenge. I’ll give you some technical details in case you’re a car person – it was introduced during the Bologna Motor Show in 2010, as an improvement from the F430. It’s 100 kg lighter, thanks to changes in the seats, wheels and chassis. 

The Ferrari 458 Challenge has a 4.5 liter V8 engine, with 340 km/hour (21o miles) top speed, and accelerates between 0-100 km/60 miles in 2.6 seconds. 

Something that really surprised me was how light the car was – only 1200 kilograms, about as much as my own Fiat Panda! As you enter the car, you’ll see why – the interiors have been stripped of all but the essentials, and seats are bare-bones.

These racing cars are not road legal and they’re not meant to be comfortable – the aim is speed!

Our Ferrari Driving Experience

After entering the Modena race track, we were taken to a waiting room with drinks and snacks, where we were also briefed. There, we found out some unexpected news – we wouldn’t be able to drive the Ferrari ourselves , we would go around the track as passengers. 

To be honest, I didn’t mind that at all – I thought that being driven by a professional would be a far better way to enjoy riding in a Ferrari 458 at its fullest , with its incredible braking and acceleration abilities. 

We all signed a disclaimer, and one by one, we were handed a black balaclava (that we got to keep!) and a blue and yellow racing helmet – the colours of the Modena race track.  

There were two different Ferrari 458 Challenge – a yellow and a red one. To be honest, I really, really wished I would get to ride on the red one. Even though the earliest Ferraris were yellow, ‘Ferrari red’ has been the signature colour for decades, since Italy was assigned the colour red in racing competitions.  

The gods listened to my wish, and I did indeed get to sit on the red Ferrari 458. My heart was pounding as I climbed into the racing seat – they’re lower than regular car seats, and moulded to fit the shape of your body. 

An assistant buckled me up in the 5 point racing harness, while a myriad of questions coursed through me. How would I film? Should I use my phone or GoPro? Would I even be able to film at all, or would I get sick at the first turn?

The acceleration took me by surprise. It felt like being on a rollercoaster and a plane all at once – there was just enough time for me to realise that we were actually moving, and we were already topping 180 km/h (110 miles). 

Then came the braking and turning , the part I was worried about given my tendency to get motion-sick. The driver hit the brake, flipped the paddles on either side of the steering wheel, and within seconds our speed had dropped to 70 km/h (43 miles), and we were turning smoothly. 

The first lap was over in a flash, before I could even press the ‘record’ button on my phone. Then, there we were again – zipping down the straight stretch , accelerating and braking faster than I could even realise what was going on. 

Then, once again, it was over – I would do it all over again , I thought, as I took my helmet off with a huge grin on my face. 

We didn’t end up driving our own Ferraris, but being driven by a professional allowed us to experience the full potential of the cars.

Ok, maybe not full full,  as we only hit 200 km/h (125 miles) maximum, a far cry from the 340 km/hour (21o miles) top speed – but still, there’s no way I would have been able to flip paddles/hit brakes/hit throttle as seamlessly as our professional driver did. 

How to Plan Your Own Ferrari Driving Experience in Italy

So, we didn’t get to drive our own Ferrari, but the good news is that YOU CAN! In Italy, you can have Ferrari driving experiences in many places, including both on race tracks and on the road. Here’s all you need to know!

-At the Modena Race Track

If you’re visiting Modena, Bologna, or other towns around Emilia Romagna , the Modena race track will probably be the easiest place for you to plan a Ferrari driving experience. 

You have two options – going around the race track as a passenger, or driving yourself. 

As a passenger, the Ferrari test drive will cost you €130 per lap – we recommend a minimum of two laps, three if possible. Trust me, it’s FAST!

To drive yourself, the price depends on what car you choose, and how many laps you want to do – you can choose between 2 and 5, the first one as a passenger, and the rest behind the wheel.

Here are the prices:

-Ferrari 430 Challenge – 2 laps €440, 3 laps €540, 4 laps €640, 5 laps €700

-Ferrari 458 Challenge – 2 laps €690, 3 laps €750, 4 laps €870, 5 laps €950

-Ferrari 488 Challenge – 3 laps €775, 4 laps €905, 5 laps €990

-On Other Race Tracks

Ferrari driving experiences are on offer on other race tracks around Italy.

Driving a Ferrari on a race track allows you to really enjoy these supercars without having to worry about traffic lights/other people on the road/speed limits, but if you want to pretend you’re on an Italian road trip in your own Ferrari, you can also hire one and drive it on the road!

I was in a group with 6 adults and each took a turn driving for 20 minutes in the Ferrari while the kids took turns on the simulator at the Ferrari store. We then we had lunch and went to the museum. The best part of the experience were the last 10 minutes of the driving experience because it takes 10 minutes to get out of town. So consider that when you choose how long to drive. Also consider how many people are waiting at the Ferrari store. You can have 2 passengers ride with you but anyone else in your group will be waiting at the store so if you book for an hour, they are waiting an hour. Only one Ferrari goes out at a time. Everyone had a great time but I think I would recommend it for a smaller group, not a larger one. The lunch and museum are fine but if you miss it, that's no biggie. Book an early spot and 200 kmh would be easily achievable. Got almost there but a tractor intervened. Great brakes on a 430! Others have newer cars for a lot more money but as Ferrari’s go this was one and it went fast. Flappy paddle gears and cornered like it’s glued down. Did both travellers get 2 separate 10 minute self-drive with a co-pilot? No. And when we protested they told us we’d have to pay for the second test drive separately. We stood there for a while trying to show them the advertisement and the offer that we bought but they were kind of patronising and didn’t speak English well at all. The offer clearly stated that it was for 2 adults! 2. Did they provide F430 model vehicle throughout the duration of the tour? Yes but the tour didn’t last for 10 minutes, it lasted for 8 and the co-pilot didn’t speak any English. They basically drove down a side road, onto a motorway and came back. 3. Were you able to go to a local restaurant for lunch? Yes, the restaurant was the only good thing about the trip. 4. Were you able to visit the Ferrari Museum & Modena and how long was your visit? Yes and No. We visited the Ferrari museum and it took about 45 minutes in total as it’s very small but still impressive. We couldn’t visit the wine and/or vinegar manufactory because when we arrived it was closed. We waited in the blistering heat trying to phone the number and ring the doorbell but nothing came of it. We decided to get out of the sun and drive to a village nearby when the tour operator got back to us. He told us that the place would be open from 14:30 to 17:00 instead of the 09:00 to 19:00 we were told previously and that the owner was fixing the front gate when we tried to enter at 14:30. I tried to explain that we were stood at the front gate for 20 minutes but he seemed more interested in convincing us that it was our fault rather than a con. We decided after this to do some checking of costs for each individual activity on the voucher since the whole thing was very suspicious. The test drive we were provided was €60 per person, the museum entrance was €10 per person, the lunch €20 euro per person and the wine museum tour (which we tried to do but couldn’t) was €10-€20 per person (found different prices in different pages). There was also a video game of driving a F1 car in the back room of the shop which lasted for 5 minutes and they apparently charge €20 for, which wasn’t in the offer and we didn’t want anyway. All of these costs combined would be €170 give or take depending on the museum, nearly fully half of the €300 I paid for! If we had just driven there and bought each individual thing PLUS another test drive we would have saved over €80. On top of that it was advertised as a 7 hour Ferrari experience when it was more like an hour of Ferrari themed activities and 2 hours for the rest. What a con! This is honestly an embarrassment and ruined what was supposed to be the highlight of our trip to Italy. Read more Written September 1, 2017

Orvieto is an ancient Etruscan city (Velzna) that reached its pinnacle as a commercial centre in the VI century BC. Subsequently, it was invaded and destroyed by the Romans in 264 BC. Galeria Ferrari in Maranello displays cars first and foremost. They also showcase images and trophies of Ferrari victories from all over the world. We include a visit to the Casa Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena too. The museum mainly tells the story of Enzo Ferrari’s life. It also explains the automotive history of the region. Next door is a gallery featuring unique Maserati and Ferrari models.

Also in the area are the Maserati factory, the Lamborghini Factory and the Museo Panini. The latter is a private museum housing the finest collection of Maserati vehicles in Italy. Besides, the Panini family are also cheese-makers. If you feel like tasting local Parmesan cheese, you are in the right place.

TEST DRIVE A FERRARI

In addition, we arrange two exciting test drives in a Ferrari for you. Indeed, we can offer a range of models: California Turbo, Portofino, 488 Spider or 458 Italia. Cruising through the countryside of Italy in a Ferrari certainly is an unforgettable experience!

Heart-Stopping Ferrari Driving Experience in Modena, Italy

While there are many places around Italy where you can have a memorable Ferrari Driving Experience, from renting a coveted sports car by yourself and driving along the Amalfi Coast to sitting alongside a professional driver while he whisks you around one of Italy’s famous race tracks, nothing beats a Ferrari Test Drive in Modena – the home of Ferrari and where the incredible Enzo Ferrari Museum is located.

Having spent 3 days exploring the Motor Valley region, visiting factories, car museums  and races tracks, I wanted to share my experience test driving a Ferrari and explain how you too can have this experience of a lifetime in Italy.

Ferrari Driving Experience in Modena, Italy

As mentioned, there’s actually quite a few places around Italy where you can have an unforgettable Ferrari Driving Experience but in this post I’m going to talk about Modena, the home of Ferrari and a unique place to test drive one of the most coveted sports cars in the world.

Ferrari Driving Experience at Autodromo Di Modena

The driver turned to me and smiled a cheeky smile,  “Sure you’re ready for this? ” “ Oh, I’m ready “, I replied. “ Okay, Let’s go! ” he says, as he quickly pushed his foot to the pedal and the Ferrari 458 we’re both strapped into accelerates down the race track, while my heart pounds, my eyes bulge and the seat belt is tight against my chest.

I’m here at the Autodromo di Modena having signed up for a Ferrari Test Drive experience with a professional race car driver. We’re gliding around the track at over 200km and hour, which is actually way below what this beast of a sports car can do when pushed harder.

The driver keeps glancing across to make sure I’m okay (my mouth is dropped to the floor with a mix of excitement and adrenaline and there’s no wiping that smile off my face!) as he expertly guides the car around corkscrew bends, simultaneously waving into my GoPro and making small talk.

The seat belt is tight, but makes me feel secure, as I sink a little further into the ultra low car seat looking out the windscreen as the scenery to the side of the tracks flashes by like a blurry photo.

The whole experience is over quicker than a rollercoaster ride, and I’m left sitting in the parked car trying to catch my breath. I then struggle to scramble my way out of the car in my long flow dress – definitely NOT the ideal outfit to wear when getting into a sports can with some of the lowest seats known to mad!  What a trip!

If this all sounds like a dream come true to you, then signing up for a Ferrari driving experience in Modena is a must in you next trip to Italy! It costs 130 euro for each lap, so cost us 260 euro for the two laps. I think if you’re going to do it, do at least 2 laps as its would be over WAY to fast with just one lap of the track (it’s just 2km long).

We were told it’s also possible to drive the Ferrari around the track, with your driving and the professional driver watching on with careful eyes from the passenger seat, but after our simulator experience earlier that day where my friends and I all managed to crash our cars on screen – we decided letting a pro do the driving was probably the best idea ever.

You’re guaranteed to go way faster with a pro driving, can enjoy the ride more and even take videos of the experience, and you won’t be panicking about whether your travel insurance will cover you writing off a 400,000 euro sports car!!

If, despite all this, you’re still keen to get behind the wheel yourself, prices to  drive around the track  a few laps start at 775 euro.

If you’re friends are racing around the track and you’ve opted not to, there are a few cool viewing platforms to watch the cars fly by and once the Ferraris (they have 3 in total at this track in Modena) park up at the end, it’s a fun opportunity to get that once-in-a-lifetime shot posing next to a car that costs more than most normal houses!

Once the Ferrari test drive experience has ended, they call out everyone’s name and present you with a fun souvenir certificate to prove that you have completed the “Ferrari Challenge” here in Modena. I’ll be cherishing mine forever – it can take pride of place in the wall next to my Bachelor and Master degrees!

Practical Information about Autodromo di Modena

If you plan to do a driving experience and want to drive yourself you’ll need a driving that is accepted in Italy. While many driving licences from other EU countries seem to be readily accepted, my American friends needed to get a little add on back home to ensure their licence is international and can be used in Italy.

The price of the test drive is 130 euro for each lap if you’re a passenger, so 260 euro to do 2 laps. It’s best to book in advance and they’ll give you a time slot that hopefully suits you.

They have 3 different Ferrari cars to choose from – 2 red and 1 yellow and I think they’re all Ferrari 458 racing cars.

BONUS: Visiting the Ferrari Museum in Modena

While you’re in Modena, it’s a prime opportunity to visit the impressive Enzo Ferrari Museum. The larger part of the museum is located in a new and very futuristic looking building, while the smaller part is located in what was once the childhood home of Enzo Ferrari and his father’s steel workshop.

The museum offers guided tours which I highly encourage you sign up to, as it will better inform you about the life of Enzo Ferrari, how he started racing sports cars (and later building them), more complex information on the engines and detailed history of every car currently in the collection including how many of them were made and how much they’re now worth.

A figure which, I’m sure you can image, is just mind boggling.

As I’m not a huge car enthusiast, and have never been to a race track or Formula One Racing event, I never knew much about Enzo Ferrari and his cars apart from the fact that they’re fast, expensive and loved around the world.

Learnings from the Enzo Ferrari Museum

I learned that young Enzo was forced to grow up very fast after his father past away when he was just 16 years old. I learned how he persuaded his mum to sell his father’s workshop and their family home simply so he could buy his first race car and start racing cars professionally.

All his life he was only interested in race cars. In super fast, sports car build for speed. He has no interest to build cars for every day use, to build cars for leisure or for collectors. The only reason he ended up making the type of Ferraris we’re all familiar with is that he needed to make money to continue racing, and funding his race team.

In the early days he loved competition and he would do anything to A) Set up unique races and B) Win by making his cars as light as possible through any means. Once he even raced a commercial jet on a track and won!

Some of the cars inside of the museum collection are one offs, some part of limited collections and others are examples of the newer types of Ferrari cars including people carriers and SUVs – which would probably make Enzo Ferrari turn in his grave!

Our guide pointed us to one car, belonging to a collection where every car is still in use today (none were written off or crashed) which means the entire collection is pretty much priceless and the car on display was worth close to 70 million euro!

We were shown which car was one of the first, which one was the favourite if Enzo Ferrari as well as slightly different models on the original Ferrari, designed and built by Enzo Ferrari’s youngest son who sadly died before his first design came to fruition.

Enzo decided to continue the model in his sons honour and even named it after him – the Dino.

Finally, and I’ll leave you with this nugget of information, we learned why the Ferrari logo is that iconic rearing horse – and it’s not the reasons many people think.

When Enzo was quite young he met the Father and Mother  Count Francesco Baracca – an ace airline pilot from the Italian Air Force who died a National Hero after escaping death on dozens of flights in his fighter jet. He had painted  a rearing horse on the side his planes for good luck, and his parents suggested to Enzo that maybe he should copy the idea.

Enzo liked the idea, and the horse emblem, and thus the Ferrari horse logo with an added splash of yellow and the initials SF (for Scuderia Ferrari) was born and is still continued to this day.

Practical Information about visiting the Enzo Ferrari Museum

Located in the centre of Modena, it can be accessed on foot, by public transport or simply drive here and park in their parking lot. The museum is open from 9.30pm – 7pm every day of the year except December 25 and January 1. Tickets costs 16 euro for adults and 6 euro for children.

We stayed for about 2 hours and that was enough time to do the tour, watch the mini Enzo Ferrari documentary and have some time to walk around and admire the cars by ourselves.

What is a Supercar?

Was that a purr of a Lamborghini that I just heard? How about this red hot Ferrari parked in a parking lot?

According to Wikipedia , a Supercar is a “high-performance street-legal sports car” . It is the best in technology, design and performance in the automotive industry. Such supercar names span Pagani, Lamborghini, McLauren, Mercedes, Bugati, Ferrari, etc…  

What is Motor Valley?

Touring Emilia-Romagna’s Motor Valley you’ll find many exotic car families have their home here.  Motor Valley is a unique way to travel Emilia Romagna, which is the home of iconic Italian foods and sports racing. On the Motor Valley website the region touts: ” 4 international race tracks, 6 specialized training centers, 6 manufacturers, 11 exciting museums, 19 impressive collections, and 188 sports teams. ”   All of that revolves around luxury race car driving.

Navigating Motor Valley, there are four main areas housing famous Italian luxury car factories : Parma, Modena, Bologna  and  Romagna area. As Emilia-Romagna has a proud tradition of slow foods ( namely called Food Valley ), you will find several day tours coupling the two experiences together!

Motor Valley Factory Tours & Museum

Aside from the possibility of driving a race car on an international circuit, Motor Valley consists mostly of visiting factory tours and museums of supercar makers. Before you think it might be boring~ let me reassure you, it is not.  If you’ve ever watched the film, Ford vs Ferrari and wondered why Enzo Ferrari was so offended by Ford’s offer, take a Ferrari factory tour and you will be enlightened to the Italian way of car making. It is highly impressive.

The factory tours will give you a stronger appreciation of Italian car makers and an understanding of the unique pride amongst collectors, admirers and automotive fans.

6 Best things to Do in Motor Valley

It is likely you will not be able to see it all. Some of these factories will require a bit of a drive, a taxi or a day tour to get to. So I suggest you choose either your favorite car maker or the city you’d like to explore most and plan your trip from there.  Here is a list of the top places to visit in Motor Valley based on what I visited in three days.

Where I stayed in Bologna: Porta San Mamolo , Dopa Hostel

1. ducati factory tour & museum.

Before Ducati was known as a motorcycle maker, it was also a maker of electronics such as radios, cameras and razors. Eventually the brand split its electronic and mechanics divisions and today, we have Ducati motorcycles. The Ducati Factory tour and Museum was my first highlight experience of Motor Valley.  The Ducati factory tour was my favorite part.

Stepping into the factory, filming is prohibited.  The Ducati factory manufacturing team has the production of motorcycles down to a science of how long it would take and how long each person would take to move things around. Everything is assembled in kit parts and strictly by hand. It takes approximately three hours to build one engine .

It is interesting to note that each country has their own requirements and standards, so the motorcycles must be made to fit international regulations for the country it is shipping to. Sometimes, due to import taxes and regulations, the parts must be shipped to be put together in the country (i.e. Brazil and Thailand are those exceptions).  Otherwise, every country gets their motorcycle made in the Ducati factory. The museum is small in comparison but it houses the lineage of Ducati motorbikes as well as some examples of the electronics it used to manufacture.

2. Lamborghini Factory Tour & Museum

Located between Bologna and Modena in Sant’ Agata Bolognese, the Lamborghini Factory Tour & Museum . Before getting competing with Ferrari to design a faster super car, Ferruccio Lamborghini designed tractors. This was my second supercar factory experience and I began to see a growing pattern…

“ All parts are made by hand,… “.  To put it broadly, the factory is divided by department teams from assembly, prototype, paint, detailing, etc… and you’ll see proud photo mural of their group assembly when you enter their department. The uniform is a sleek “Lamborghini”  black shirt with multi-pocketed cargo pants.

It’s sleek factory. Each worker in the line is responsible for parts of the assembly and you’ll see a time clock counting down the minutes.  The Lamborghini factory pride is that they only employ one robot arm in the entire factory of super car designs from Huracáns to Aventadors .  I was especially impressed by the meticulous detailing down to the interior and car seats– all the knicks and slightest imperfections in the fabric are circled with a white chalk, rendering the fabric unusable for anything other than spare parts. 

Anything can be customized to your specific needs from the color of the exterior to the embroidery on the seats. Even more impressive– if you’re willing to pay for it, you can own your own prototype design. Yes, you can have an original – the only kind in the world. The cheapest Lamborghini goes for around $200,000.

Take a full day tour of Ferrari, Pagani and Lamborghini from Bologna

After the factory visit, I visited MUDETEC , the Lamborghini Museum of Technologies , where I got to try my hand at a Lamborghini simulated drive experience ! You can choose your racetrack which will define the level. I’m absolutely glad my drive was simulated because I spun out of control pretty quickly. Hours  9:30 AM – 6:00 PM, you must make your appointment for the factory and museum in advance. Getting there: Check the website for bus and driving directions .

Note: While you are there, make a lunch pit stop at Da Taiadela La Morena. Da Taiadela La Morena is an exclusive restaurant for Lamborghini employees and their guests. They have two rooms- one for employees and a smaller one for guests. They serve a mean Tagliatelle fungi and Lambrusco. The tagliatelle is fresh made a high-quality ingredients.

3. Explore the Italian countryside driving a Fiat 

Mixing gastronomic with off-the-beaten path driving adventure, I spent an afternoon exploring the Italian countryside in an iconic Fiat Abarth 500 sponsored by  Canossa Grand Tours ! My super cute and mini Italian Fiat had a sunroof (how Italian getaway is that)! Canossa Grand Tours offers curated drive tours of Italy, where you can explore the freedom of the Italian countryside and its remote villages, paired with curated food stops. I stopped at a vineyard offering balsamic vinegar tastings  where I had an elegant dinner of farm-fresh, regional foods.

You can get your drive trip expertly planned as you drive on your own, with a group or alongside a professional driver on a luxury getaway! If you want to do the driving, remember to them them what type of car you can handle- stick shift or automatic. I forgot to mention it spent part of my afternoon learning how to drive stick shift. Luckily, the Canossa representative was with me, so we could get back home!

4. Casa Enzo Ferrari Museo & Ferrari in Maranello

There are two Ferrari Museums – Museo Ferrari in Maranello and the Casa Enzo Ferrari Museo .

The Museo Ferrari in Maranello  is the headquarters of Ferrari. It offers a museum, shuttle factory tour, driving simulation and track experience at Autodromo di Modena . If you’re a Ferrari fan, this is the IT spot.

I visited Casa Enzo Ferrari Museo , which is located a bit aways. This museum showcases its most unique, expensive and impressive Ferrari models, engines. The museum plays a recurring film on the life of Ferrari, by dimming the lights in the main museum and projecting it on the wall.

If there is one museum you want a guided tour, the Ferrari museums are it! I cannot stress this more. The information imparted by your Ferrari guide really opens your understanding about the Ferrrari mystique, why Ferraris are supercars and the type of man Ferrari was.

Interesting note: All Ferraris can be used for the race track. There should be two insignia Ferrari logos–  one signifying the car is made in the Ferrari factory and the second stating the car is part of the Ferrari driving race team. It is interesting to note that all Ferrari’s are only originals.

Getting there: There is a paid Shuttle bus connecting both locations and Modena Railway Station (gate no. 4). You can pay on the bus.

5. Driving a Ferrari in Italy at Autodromo di Modena

Are you a Formula One fan? How does driving a Ferrari in Italy sound to you?    Autodromo di Modena is one of the top four international circuits of Emilia-Romagna and you can drive the race track circuit or be driven by a professional in top race cars.  Autodromo di Modena is also a green circuit, working towards reducing greenhouse gases in motorsport.

I put a Ferrari 458 Challenge to the speed test on the curvy racetrack, with my professional driver, Gian Luca. ⁣ I won’t lie, the cost of this experience is not cheap, but it is a lifetime of memories, a certificate of completion and the opportunity to brag that you zipped through a famous Italian racetrack in under 3 minutes. If you’re a Formula One fan, this is a no-brainer for your Italy trip!

6. Umberto Panini Motor Museum | The famous home of the Maserati collection

We make one last stop on my tour of motor valley are private car collections and one of the biggest and most impressive is the Umberto Panini Motor Museum otherwise called the Panini Collection . The Panini Collection is reknown for having a large collection of Maseratis, which the city of Modena convinced Umberto Panini to buy in order to keep the collection in Modena.

Built in 1996, the  collection consists of 40 cards, 80 motorcycles and various bicycles, engines, tractors and prototypes.

Museum Hours: Mon to Fri 9 am/12:30-14.:30/18:00, Sat 9a/12:30. Website: www.paninimotormuseum.it  Admission: Free.  Location: The Motor Museum is built alongside Hombre Farm, an organic family farm, which  produces Parmigiano Reggiano cheese.

Do you need to be a car enthusiast to enjoy Motor Valley?

No. I am not a car aficionado by any means, but exploring this region through a thematic tour of cars and food, will wow anyone! Personally, the guided factory tours were a real eye-opener to me and enhanced my appreciation of these super cars which I knew very little about. By the end of my three days, I appreciated a lot about the super cars to feel like a new inductee into its fan club.

How to Get around Motor Valley

If you’re not renting a car or taking a tour, Italy’s train and bus stystem are great! I loved taking the trains for their convenience, ease and price. i booked through  OMIO transportation booking app (it’s so convenient, you can book on the bus to the train station or at the train station waiting for your train!). I booked a lot of train travel with it, from Bologna , Florence to Venice such as Treviso and Verona! Check out their routes and timetables. 

Tip: Also, if you’re there for a day trip while in-transit to another city, check out Radical Storage . It’s cheaper than storing your bags at the train holding service. It allows you to keep your bags at local places near the train station,  like restaurants (that’s where I stored my bags) .

With an expert Ferrari copilot at your side, taking to the open road is the perfect way to see the surrounding landscape of this beautiful region. Your Ferrari California will take the adventurous driver, your accompanying Ferrari expert, and a passenger in the back on the drive of a lifetime. After your test drive, the tasting will begin! To start off, a guided tour will offer you an incredible opportunity to experience firsthand the process of Parmigiano Reggiano production and to meet the people who work here every day, all year round to craft this delicacy and preserve traditions. During the tour the secrets of this cheese will be unveiled and an exquisite tasting will be offered.

The tour starts from the processing department and continues along the corridor with a close-up look at different steps of the production cycle, including pre-salting room, salting vats containing about 2,100 wheels and the ‘warm room.’ Finally, you will reach the warehouse, with 33,570 Parmigiano Reggiano wheels being cured and then conclude with a visit to the cutting and packaging laboratory.

After the tour enjoy a tasting session combining differently aged Parmigiano Reggiano and some other fresh cheese, served with select local products and guided explanations. If you want to take some cheese with you, the store sells Parmigiano Reggiano DOP and a wide range of other traditional food items.

Next, you’ll discover the secretes behind the local prosciutto ham production at a processing factory. This stop will teach you about first and second salting, grooming and net packaging, desalting, washing, pre-curing, greasing, curing, quality control. Then, of course, you will get to taste! Here, a full lunch with a range of typical products will be brought out for you to enjoy.

Your last food stop will be a guided visit with tasting at a balsamic vinegar cellar and winery. Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Modena is a renowned, exclusive and unique condiment, which stands out for its dark and shiny color, for its density, and its richness of aromas and flavors. Along with fresh bread and the balsamic vinegar, you will also taste the local wines produced from grapes grown on the premises.

Finally, last, but certainly not least, is a visit to the famous Ferrari Museum. Feel like a local as you stop for an espresso at the Ferrari bar before exploring the rest of the museum. You will see everything from vintage race cars to the jar dropping Ferrari trophy room!

The Ferrari Museums in Modena and Maranello are among the best car museums in Italy .

They are a treat for Ferrari lovers and car people in general and they are set out in such a way, you can enjoy them at any age.

We visited as a family of four, with varying degrees of interest in cars, and we all loved it.

The car lover in the family dubbed the place as ‘his favorite place in the whole world’.

However, even the least interested got excited there: the cars, the power of the story, the overall experience is inspirational, easy to enjoy and great fun.

This is a visit I now recommend to everyone and today, I am sharing how to book it and how to arrange your day.

The Ferrari Museum in Modena and Maranello: what you need to know

The first thing you need to know when it comes to the Ferrari Museums is that they are not one museum but two.

One is called ‘The Enzo Ferrari Museum’ and it is in Modena city.

The other one is the Ferrari Museums and Factory and it is in Maranello, a small town about 20km out of Modena.

The two museums complement each other and you can see one or the other on their own or book a combined visit.

Which one to choose depends on what you are most interested in.

At a glance, I recommend you:

• Visit the Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena if you love classic cars and want to see where it all started
• Visit the Maranello Museum if you love the Ferrari brand and F1. This is also the best museum to visit if you want to take a guided tour of the Ferrari factory estate.

Let’s look at this more in detail.

Which Ferrari Museum is best? How to choose

If you have the time, I highly recommend you visit both museums.

The two are rather different from one other and have a different take on the whole Ferrari experience.

The Enzo Ferrari Museum in Modena

The Enzo Ferrari Museum is in Modena city and develops around the original Enzo Ferrari workshops.

The museum has an older part, with Enzo Ferrari’s first office, and attached to it there is a beautiful, modern and futuristic-looking dome with a large display of classic cars.

The place is fantastic: the large showroom has many beautiful car models from different times, there are some incredible engines on display and there is a photo booth where you can be photographed while driving a Ferrari!

At regular intervals, a short film tells the story of Enzo Ferrari and explains how the brand came to be.

The museum is not very big and it is easy to visit in about an hour. As well as the showroom, there is a merchandising shop and restroom facilities.

There is no restaurant on-site; however, since the museum is in Modena city, it is easy to find places for lunch nearby.

You can get here to / from the station in about 10 minutes on foot.

The Ferrari Museum in Maranello

The Ferrari Museum in Maranello is very different from the one in Modena.

Located about 20km out of the city, the museum is more focussed on the Ferrari Brand as it developed for one-off models and F1 endeavors and feels a lot more like an immersive experience than just a museum.

The whole place is designed with the red and black Ferrari brand colors and Ferrari logos and touches are everywhere.

In the various rooms, you see cars, displays of photos, videos and all the Ferrari trophies and F1 cars.

In the ‘Victory Room’ you are literally surrounded by the F1 winning cars and you can see the names of the pilots and their victory cups.

The whole thing is captivating even if you do not like cars.

The place has made an incredible job and getting people on board with the idea of Ferrari being more than cars and you feel like you are part of a big successful family.

As well as seeing the museum displays, here you can also participate in two main activities:

Ferrari driving simulator : for an extra charge, visitors tall more than 150cm can experience the Ferrari simulator. This is a 7-minute experience and you get to sit in a car and ‘drive’ along a circuit of your choice.

Our son did this and said it was similar to a videogame experience, albeit ‘bigger and better’.

For it, you sit in a car shell in front of a wrap-around screen. With the help of a Ferrari Museum warned, you learn how to use the steering wheel and gear, pick a circuit to drive and you are ready!

The experience doesn’t require a headset nor goggles and others can watch you while you drive.

Panoramic Bus Tour of the Factory: for an extra charge, you can hop on bus and get a guided tour of the Ferrari factory estate.

This tour is highly informative and leads you inside the Ferrari Factory village, where you see the outside of the plants and workshops and the wind gallery where they test the cars.

This is also where Ferrari owners bring their cars for checks so, while you bus around, you will see many Ferrari zooming around the place in all possible colors!

This tour also brings you to see the local race track; however, racing regulations do not allow for practice on the track, therefore you do not actually see cars in action her

The Maranello Museum also has a merchandising shop on-site, restrooms facilities and a cafe on site.

Immediately outside of it, you have several restaurants and cafes. It is worth noticing that the Ferrari-themed restaurant ‘The Paddock’ is not here but in Maranello Village, which is a short drive away.

Visitin the Ferrari Museums of Modena and Maranello with kids

We visited the Modena and Maranello museums with our two children: a car-loving 11-year-old and a car-uninterested 9-year-old.

They both loved the day.

We started with a visit to Maranello and we all immediately felt the buzz and excitement of the place.

Unsure about the simulator, we hadn’t booked it but quickly got sucked into the desire to treat our son to it.

There was no queue at the simulator desk and there were several children who had just finished and were enthusiastic about it, which reassured us it was suitable for their age.

The museum desk person was lovely with our son and they had a grand old chat about circuits while he explained how to use the commands.

The simulation itself only lasts 7 minutes and at 25 Euro is all but cheap. However, it stayed as one of the highlights of our son’s day and you can take photos of them driving, which is an incredible memento for them.

There is a minimum height requirement to do it and this is strict as it has to do with the size of the car.

My son just about made the height and was able to just about hit the pedals: any shorter would have been technically impossible to drive.

If you are unsure about height, I recommend you only decide about the simulator on the day as they will be able to advise.

After the visit to the museum we went to a nearby cafe/restaurant (not branded, just beside the museum) andf then we joined the factory tour.

The factory tour is the most informative part of the visit albeit possibly the least impressive.

You hop on a bus and a guide brings you to the factory estate (no photo allowed there): you pass the main gate and you are driven around the factory lot, seeing the different paint/tire etc workshops from outside, and getting a taste of what it may feel like working at Ferrari, passing the company canteen etc.

In the estate, you also see the outside of the wind gallery which they use to test for aero dynamicity.

The highlight of this part of the tour is the guide who gives an incredible amount of information about Ferrari cars and F1 regulations.

This part of the tour was excellent for my car-obsessed son but too information-driven for my daughter who mostly just enjoyed sitting on the bus and seeing the Ferrars from the windows!

If you have a car lover, highly recommend this part of the tour. If you are here with a little one, however, or just want to see the beautiful cars, you can stick to the museum only.

How to visit the Ferrari Museum in Modena and Maranello on the same day

It is possible to visit the Ferrari Museums in Modena and Maranello on the same day. however, it takes a little bit of planning.

Since the two are in different areas, you will need to book both entrances, make arrangements for transport and you will also need to separately book the bus tour if doing.

You can do all this by yourself on the Ferrari Museums Ticketitn platform or you can do what we did: send an email to Vivara Viaggi their travel agency partner, and get them to book it for you!

In our case, the day worked perfectly and it entailed:

• 10.40 Shuttle from Modena train station to Maranello Museum
• 11.15 Arrival and self-guided visit to the museum
• Simulator experience (booked last minute on site)
• Lunch (own time, no booking needed)
• 13.00 Bus tour from Maranello Museum to factory lot
• 14.45 Shuttle to Enzo ferraru Museum in Modena
• 15.25 Self guided museum visit

Since we were staying in Bologna, we then just easily walked back to the station to get back to the city. we were home in the late afternoon.

There are many options when it comes to accommodation, depending on budget and plans for the other day so your trip.

Casa Palestro in Modena : this is a lovely apartment in Modena city, close to the station and the Enzo Ferrari Museum, good for larger families (sleeps 5)

Starhotel Excelsior Bologna : if you prefer to base yourself in Bologna and come for the day (like we did!), we found the Starhotel Excelsior in Bologna to be excellent.

They have family rooms, excellent breakfast and an excellent location right in front of the train station. Our top pick.

A Ferrari flag flies

Once, at a conference in Italy where I was speaking, I fell into conversation with the conference organizer. He told me that executives at Ferrari, where his firm did business, told him, "We sell myth." The myth is that if you buy a Ferrari, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, you will be one with an iconic brand that embodies the highest standards of quality, luxury and performance.

The mythical image is reflected in the persona of its founder, Enzo Ferrari , who built the automaker in the wreckage of World War II Italy. Ferrari had been a race car driver for Alpha Romeo in the Thirties. After the War, he turned his attention to building race cars.

Screen Story

His effort was not without struggle, as depicted in a new film bearing his name, Ferrari . The film focuses on the pivotal year 1957, when his firm was facing bankruptcy and lacked the capital to build more production vehicles. Ferrari's heart was racing, and so that is where he put his energies.

A key sequence in the film focuses on Ferrari’s drivers competing in the Mille Miglia , a thousand-mile open-course race from Brescia to Rome. The course winds through towns and cities and open countryside where road conditions—and even farm animals wandering on them—could be obstacles to cars racing upwards of 100 miles an hour. It is a race, his finance people tell Ferrari, that his cars must win if he is going to attract the funds he needs to continue running his firm.

Shape the Message Individually

Ferrari enters five cars in the race. As dramatized in the film, we see Ferrari giving directions to each driver or pair of drivers. For example, he teases one of his drivers that he will never be able to face his wife or children again if he does not win – after coming so close previous in previous races. To another driver, he cautions him to watch out for sheep crossing the road. And then to a new member of his team, Ferrari advises him to follow his teammates until he gets to Bologna. Once there, the road will be familiar, and he can put a pedal to the metal.

Ferrari needs them to work as a team but also knows he must give each one specific direction. That is a key message every manager can learn. Tailor your message to individuals as individuals. That way, you connect with them personally, and they can respond appropriately. Knowing what motivates each team member is essential. Great sports coaches know this.

Speak to the brain, yes, but also touch the heart.

Speak from the Heart

It is also necessary, as we see in this film when it is essential to speak to the team as one unit. We see Ferrari (played by Adam Driver) doing this at several team dinners. In one pivotal scene, he speaks to them about his racing philosophy. As a champion driver, Ferrari knows what committing to the relentless pursuit of a goal means. He cites the example of legendary drivers Juan Manuel Fangio and Stirling Moss as competitors who put everything they had into winning. One sense that Ferrari realizes is that his current crop of drivers – while experienced and successful – are not the best in the world.

“Enzo Ferrari created an iconic brand whose aura and fame reaches beyond fans of powerful sports cars. He built the longest serving Formula 1 team which has raced in the championship since 1950. It is the team that every Formula 1 driver wants to drive for” says consultant-keynote speaker, Ken Pasternak, co-author of Performance at the Limit, Business Lessons from Formula 1 Motor Racing .

On a personal note, I spent part of the summer of 1976 as an assistant cameraman at various Formula One races and saw up close how ferociously the Ferrari team—led by champion driver Nikki Lauda—competed. Lauda suffered a fiery crash at Nürburgring that nearly killed him, but he recovered and returned to Formula One competition.

Ferrari, called the Commendatore (an honorific meaning knight of the crown) by his staff, was not without his flaws. (His personal life was something of a mess.) He did, however, know how to build the best race cars in the world and assemble a team of drivers who would pilot these cars to victories, victories that would shape Ferrari myth on the road and in the hearts of race enthusiasts worldwide.
