Experience a journey filled with landscapes of forests, rivers, Bavarian mountain ranges and North Sea beaches when you cruise around Europe to Germany and beyond.

Cruise Germany and explore the cultural spectrum of Hamburg: imposing art museums, UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt, Gothic-style red-brick buildings, and stunning concert halls that all sit comfortably next to risqué cabaret and enigmatic underground clubs. There's plenty to discover in and around the country, including views of Jasmund National Park when you cruise to Germany's northern coast.[ReadMoreDesk][ReadMoreMob]

SEE WHAT YOUR JOURNEY INCLUDES

Guests should be able to easily walk one to two miles, which may include climbing one or two flights of stairs and walking over uneven pavement, groomed hiking trails or cobblestones. Standing up to one hour or more may be required.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Exclusively inclusive river cruising

Along the river Rhine… where mountains rise abruptly from the water's edge, ancient castles perch aloft, keeping watch over comings and goings, gentle valleys and ancient winelands lure, spas give respite, cathedrals speak to powerful times, plains and woods catch the eye, and a river travels, connecting centuries of history, cities of the arts and crossroads of thought.

Experience munich's oktoberfest, celebrate the "real" oktoberfest in munich... although it's in september.

There are "Oktoberfest" celebrations all over the world, but until you experience the one in Munich, where it began, you haven't really "done" the true Oktoberfest – a unique mix of beer consumption, Bavarian feasting, live brass bands, communal singing, and dancing. It all started in 1810 when a royal couple invited the citizens to their wedding festivities on the fields in front of the city. Today Munich's Oktoberfest – always held in September – is the largest festival in the world. Tauck has reserved seats for you in the center of the action, in one of the exclusive brewery tents... come join the party!

Düsseldorf's craft breweries

A walk to discover the beers and brewing traditions of düsseldorf.

A city well-known for its beer in a country well-known for its beer, Düsseldorf is celebrated for its Altbier ("Old beer") tradition, which preserves the pre-lager, pre-19th-century brewing method employing a warm, top-fermenting yeast to produce a hoppy, cleaner, crisper beer. Düsseldorf's alt breweries are concentrated in the city's historic center, the Altstadt, which has often been jokingly referred to as "Germany's longest bar" for its wealth of pubs and breweries… which you'll explore during your visit.

By cog railway to Mt. Pilatus

To and from mt. pilatus by cogwheel train or gondola.

Since the 1880s, the world's steepest cogwheel train has been bringing travelers up and down Mt. Pilatus in Switzerland, climbing nearly 7,000 ft. from the edge of Lake Lucerne to the mountain's summit (Oberhaupt). On your visit to Lucerne, you'll take this thrilling ride that has you traveling upward at a 48° angle. Or, if the weather is uncooperative, you may make the ascent by gondola (cable car). Either way, getting there is definitely part of the fun, as you enjoy soaking up views of Alpine meadows and mountain streams, goats and flowers.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France. You are not required to obtain a visa to enter any country visited for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact a consulate or embassy of the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and France to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please Note: Longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations – International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the riverboat, your passport will be held by the purser temporarily to make copies.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

The ms Grace is registered in Basel, Switzerland; ms Inspire is registered in Valleta, Malta. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. Please refer to the Tauck Travel Protection Product section above for details on the coverage we can offer you.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S. , no vaccinations are currently required for travel to the Netherlands, Germany, France or Switzerland. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact an embassy or consulate of the Netherlands, Germany, France and  Switzerland to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for you to visit.

While a cruise from Amsterdam to Munich is very relaxing and the pace leisurely, to enjoy all the cruise has to offer, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. There is a moderate to significant amount of walking during our excursions, often along cobblestone streets, and at many sites there are multiple stairs or steps; for the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion.

Your riverboat has four decks: Sun, Diamond, Ruby and Emerald. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and Emerald Deck; there is no elevator access to the Sun Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The climate along the Rhine is temperate and unpredictable. From May through October, the average high temperatures increase as you travel south along the river.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible and allows for layering. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. A light jacket or sweater for the sun deck is also recommended. Pack comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in, as many of the sites visited were built centuries ago and have uneven surfaces, some steep inclines and many steps.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Bathrobes, slippers and hairdryers are provided in each cabin.

Valet laundry service is available on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available by request to the front desk. Category 7  suites feature their own irons and ironing boards.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your cruise:

  • Flat, rubber-soled walking shoes for onboard the ship
  • Comfortable yet sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella

Rhine Discovery Oberwesel 2024

Mit dem Rikscha durch Mainz

Highlights of the Germany River Cruise

I'm all fired up.

From Cologne to Cochem, Koblenz, Mainz, Frankfurt and Rüdesheim to Cologne.

Normally, the castles on the Rhine bask in the sun and the flashing lights of thunderstorms or groups of visitors. But once a year they are lit up in purple, silver, and gold. That's when the Rhine bursts into flames. And this is the best moment to stand on deck with a glass of champagne. Here, you can start dreaming about the rest of your journey. Imagine the cities waiting to be discovered, and the landscapes you will fall in love with. Welcome to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley!

Flussreise nach Cochem

Even though it is Germany’s second-smallest district administrative centre, Cochem can look back on a long history, witnessed by its majestic Imperial Castle and the ruins of the Winneburg, each of which overlooks the town from its own small hill. Cochem is also home to the Pestkapelle (Plague Chapel) and the Kapelle zu den drei Kreuzen (Chapel of the Three Crosses). While these two places of worship are by no means huge, their understated elegance and beautiful location make them well worth a visit.

Skyline Frankfurt vom Fluss aus

‘Hier bin ich Mensch, hier darf ich’s sein’ (‘Here I am man, dare man to be’). This quote by Frankfurt’s most famous son – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe – actually comes from his play Faust (and the English translation by Bayard Taylor), but it is also a very fitting way to describe Goethe’s hometown. Frankfurt’s combination of modern skyscrapers housing major finance companies and the old town with its historic buildings and half-timbered houses is unique. And if you fancy a break from the hustle and bustle, you can take a leisurely walk along the lovely bank of the Main.

Flusskreuzfahrt nach Koblenz

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

€ 200 SUPER EARLY BOOKING DISCOUNT 2024

The A-ROSA Super Early Booking Discount is valid for bookings made until 31 August 2024. Limited availabilities. The discount is already included in the travel price.

1st Day Cologne Dep 06:00 pm

We will set off on our exciting Rhine cruise from here, heading for the northern or the southern Rhine. But you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to explore this cathedral city, with its wealth of monuments and attractions. The best way is to arrive the day before your cruise departs, so that you can relax – or simply extend your stay in Cologne after the cruise has ended.

A-ROSA Sena in Köln

2nd Day Cochem Arr 11:00 am Dep 09:30 pm

Cochem, on the bank of the Moselle, is another port of call on your Rhine cruise, which will take you onto the Moselle. The entire Moselle region around Cochem is a real sight to behold. The town’s landmark is undoubtedly the famous Reichsburg, a splendid castle that towers above the river. But did you know that the West German government had a secret bunker built here for its federal bank? Strange, but true! And you’ll have the opportunity to visit it during your river cruise.

The spectacular scenery, the romantic vineyards and the passing Moselle invite you to a cosy wine tasting in Cochem. The Haxel Winery welcomes you with a young and dynamic wine estate. Sample the delicious wines at a wine tasting and learn all about the philosophy of the winery, as well as how the wines are made.

It is flanked by steep slopes, where the grapes mature for great wines. From the ship, you will cycle to Bruttig-Fankel and onwards across the river directly into the picturesque streets of Cochem. During a stop at the historic mustard mill, you will have the chance to taste some of the 'spicy gold'. Then you will continue to the late-Gothic Cochem Castle, situated on the largest castle hill, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view over the river.

Since last year, the city of Koblenz has turned it into a sparkling wine museum. Your A-ROSA host will take you to this historic headquarters on a small train. Here you will get to know the tradition of sparkling wine at close quarters and embark on an exciting journey back in time in the cellar museum. 6th Day Frankfurt Arr 04:00 am Dep 10:00 pm

Welcome to Goethe’s birthplace! Here’s another historical fact while we’re at it: this is where the first German national assembly met in 1848. Today, the metropolis on the Main is home to the headquarters of major banks and is also one of Germany’s most important centres of business and commerce. Frankfurt is also known for its many futuristic-looking high-rises. You’ll get a closer view of them when your Rhine cruise takes you along the Main river.

Frankfurt skyline

Frankfurt am Main is known as a financial and banking metropolis. The Frankfurt skyline is graced by skyscrapers, but Frankfurt has much more to offer. Explore the old town with your English-speaking tour guide, past the Römer and the Paulskirche. Or stroll along the Museum Riverbank and discover Frankfurt's museums. You determine the programme and we implement it for you!

Rikscha Ausflug

The skyline, its old town, apple cider - Frankfurt does not fit into any one category. And that's great, because contrasts are exciting. This combination of a city walk and a bus tour takes you to modern boulevards and along the mighty bank skyscrapers, to the quaint district of Sachsenhausen with its apple wine taverns and the historic Römerberg (Roman Mountain). The eponymous 'Roman' has been the city hall since the 15th century. No less impressive is the Baroque Hauptwache (Main Guard House), the Old Opera and the magnificent neoclassical rotunda of St. Paul's Church.

Sonnenuntergang in Frankfurt

Discover the financial and banking capital Frankfurt am Main and its green surroundings in comfort by e-bike. Pass the Main Tower and the beautiful old opera house and head into the countryside. Past Solmspark and over the Lohrberg, the destination is the Main Applehaus, where you can taste a glass of freshly pressed apple juice. 7th Day Rüdesheim Arr 06:00 am Dep 06:00 pm

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre ’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. Rüdesheim is the best-known spot in the Rheingau and has plenty of cultural attractions, including stately homes and fortifications. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.

 Weinplantage Rüdesheim

Let the Winzerexpress take you on a tour through vineyards and right into the centre of Rüdesheim. Here, the little lanes are too narrow for our trusty vehicle, so you’ll explore the old town on foot. You’ll find one of Germany’s most well-known streets here: Drosselgasse. Lined with wine taverns and bars with outdoor seating, it offers 144 metres of pure enjoyment. You’ll have the opportunity to stop off here to learn how the traditional coffee speciality ‘Rüdesheim coffee’ is made – and you’ll be able to try it for yourself, of course.

Winery Express and walking

German Riverscapes from Passau to Trier

Passau Trier

This cruise showcases the majesty of three great European rivers — the Moselle, the Main and the Danube. Travel the man-made Main-Danube canal — a stunning technological marvel — as you transit from the beautiful Danube River. Explore the upper middle Rhine Valley with its numerous castles and experience the tranquil meandering of the Main.

Discover the half-timbered buildings of Miltenberg and Wertheim, along with the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Würzburg, Bamberg and Regensburg. Another sight  of this cruise is the region that has been considered the best place for Riesling in the world: the romantic vineyards and villages of the Moselle river.

Please note: Due to low clearance heights at bridges and locks on the river route between Frankfurt and Regensburg, access to the sun deck might be restricted for safety reasons.

Situated in the heart of Europe and seen as a timeless destination, Germany can be discovered through our cruises on the Rhine , the Elbe and many others. It has more than 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites and is one of the great nations that have influenced modern Western and European civilizations. A trip to Germany promises to be a rich experience.

The country has some of the most beautiful cities in the world just waiting to be discovered and which combine the modern city with a deep heritage, in a whirlwind of culture and everyday life.

Berlin with its many sites, is a world capital of art and culture. It is a destination that brings together artists, creators, enthusiasts and lovers of life. Berlin is a city in motion, full of art, cinema, music, theatre and dance.

Hamburg , meanwhile, displays a heritage from several centuries. You can admire the Alster, a large lake in the heart of the city, the magnificent city hall, an imposing neo-Renaissance building built in 1897, and the Chilehaus, a 10-storey brick building whose eastern facade evokes the bow of a ship.

The rivers that crisscross the country are all full of discoveries and surprises. Cruising the Rhine, where picturesque villages surrounded by vineyards and overhung by ancient castles, will eventually seduce you. A cruise on the Elbe, meanwhile, will take you to the most beautiful corners of Europe.

A river cruise in Germany will take you to the heart of northern and central Europe, where history, culture, nature and civilization meet.

Top Rhine River Day-Trip Cruise Lines in Germany

Published on March 18, 2024

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) and the Weisse Flotte Rhein are the best-known day-trip riverboat cruise lines on the Rhine River in Germany and are good choices for short to all-day excursion cruises. Popular day-trip cruises are to tour the Loreley Valley between Rüdesheim, St Goar, and Koblenz or panorama sightseeing cruises in larger cities such as Cologne, Düsseldorf, Cochem ( Mosel ), and Frankfurt ( Main ).

KD MS RheinEnergie Rhine Cruise Boat in Cologne © KD Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG

The Rhine River is a very popular day-trip destination from cities such as Cologne (Köln) and Frankfurt am Main. Trains run on both banks of the Rhein but nothing beats a cruise on the river itself. Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) has the largest number of boats on the Rhine River and has many cruises through the lovely Loreley Valley that could be as short as an hour or all day. Several further companies operate cruises on the Rhine and past the Lorelei (Loreley). Special savings deals are available on many cruises.

The KD Rhine Pass savings deal has not been on sale in recent years but Get Your Guide offers easy booking (and often sensible cancelation options) for day-trip cruises on the Rhine departing from many popular cities such as Cologne , Düsseldorf , Bonn , Koblenz , Boppard , Ruedesheim , Cochem , and Frankfurt . Most cruise lines now also accept online ticket purchases but several still prefer to sell tickets directly at the quay or on board cruise boats.

Tips for the Best Rhine River Day Trip Cruises in Germany

Day-trip cruises on the Rhine River are very popular in Germany with departures available from many cities and even small towns on the Rhine. Reservations are often not possible for regular day cruises but it is worth planning a bit in advance to take advantage of savings deals to get the best value (and finest views) from a cruise.

  • Rhine riverboats differ in size in and between companies but there are little real noticeable differences between boats. Often it is best to simply take the next boat to depart.
  • Most boats cruising on the Rhine River have their own restaurants and bars but it is acceptable to consume your own food and drink on the open decks of Linienfahrten , i.e. cruises with stops en route.
  • The high season for Rhine River day cruises is from end April to early October. However, regular cruises operate usually from late March to late October.
  • Cruises in winter months are very limited but often a few cruises may be available during the Christmas market Advent season. Departures are most likely from Rüdesheim and Cologne .
  • Return trips on most Rhine River cruise lines are only marginally more expensive than one-way cruises. Often cruising up and down river on a scenic part of the river may be more rewarding than going a longer distance in one direction.
  • If space is available, bicycles are transported for free on some boats — KD charges €3.50.
  • Show Deutsche Bahn tickets (or often any public transportation ticket) if applicable when buying boat tickets and discounts are often applied – check German Railways timetables and book train tickets online at Deutsche Bahn . (If available, select the town name with KD at the end to include instructions on how to reach the boat landing from the train station.) The timetables sometimes include boat trips too.
  • Smaller lines are often slightly cheaper than the Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) boats. However, the price difference is very small and the discounts offered by KD and the higher number of departures may well outweigh any price disadvantage.

See also Loreley Valley Rhine River Day Cruises for tips on sensible routings and cruise times between ports on the very popular Middle Rhine Valley.

Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) – the Largest Pleasure Day Cruise Line on the Rhine in Germany

SS Goethe Historic Paddle Steamboat on the Rhine River

Köln-Düsseldorfer, or simply KD , is the largest operator of pleasure boats for short and full single day cruises on the Rhine River in Germany. KD has been in business since 1827 but the oldest KD boat in operation is the SS Goethe first launched in 1913.

Köln-Düsseldorfer is generally a good choice for day cruises on the Rhine. KD has the largest number of departures by far of all Rhine pleasure boat lines. This allows passengers to make more stops en route if desired — remember to indicate all planned stops when buying tickets as separate tickets are issued for each leg of the cruise.

During the high season, KD has at least two boats doing the daily cruise route from Rüdesheim and Bingen to Koblenz (and return) with further boats cruising between Mainz and Boppard. Many more KD boats cruise between Bonn and Linz with the occasional boat starting from Cologne.

In 2024, no regular Rhine boats cruise between Linz and Koblenz in either direction. KD also does not offer Mosel cruises other than the panorama cruise in Cochem .

KD also often has arrangements with other local boat operators to offer a high number of departures.

SS Goethe Historic Rhine Steam Boat on a day trip cruise

Köln-Düsseldorfer historic SS Goethe paddle steamer from 1913 is the oldest regular cruise boat on the Rhine River. The Goethe steams daily (except Monday) from Koblenz to Rüdesheim and back — just over 6 hours upstream and just less than 4 hours going back.

Depending on the season, KD has scheduled cruises on the Rhine, Mosel , and Main rivers and panorama cruises in Düsseldorf , Cologne , Cochem , and Frankfurt . The Middle Rhine and Loreley Valley remain the top cruise by far.

Special Savings Deals KD Rhine River Boat Day Cruises

Köln-Düsseldorfer offers a wide range of special savings deals to make Rhine River day trips cheaper. Different discounts generally cannot be combined and official identification may be required. Also, discounts are only available for tickets bought in person for regular cruises and are usually only valid if KD’s own boats are used:

  • Birthday Child – irrespective of age, a passenger and any partner may cruise for 50% off on the specific birthday date.
  • Special family passes are good value. Sometimes the family day deals are available: Family Day — Wednesdays up to three children under 13 cruise for free per paying adult.
  • Children between 4 and 13 cruise on KD for only €9 per day as long as they are accompanied by a fare-paying adult (up to 3 children per adult). Children under 4 sail for free.
  • School children and students under 27 pay only half price if the above discounts are not applicable.
  • Seniors over 60 receive 20% discount on all cruises.
  • Dog tickets are €3.90 per cruise — dogs must be kept on a leash the whole cruise.
  • On Tuesdays and Thursdays, cyclists sail two for the price of one on one-way trips (two cyclists and two bicycles – or a tandem – are required!). Ironically the bicycle ticket (€3.50 per bike per cruise) is not discounted.

For more details on these and other saving fares see Rhine River Day Cruise Saver Fares .

Weisse Flotte Rhein Rhine River Day Cruises in Germany

A few independent Rhine boat cruise operators cooperate under the Weisse Flotte Rhein banner. However, these companies set their own schedules and prices. These companies cruise on all parts of the Rhine but departures and cruises are most frequent in the vicinity of the Rhine where these independent boat cruise lines are based. Many cruise lines offer discount combination tickets for cruises and sightseeing sites.

Note that Rundfahrt (circular cruises) and Panorama Cruises usually mean that it is not possible to leave the boat en route or at a destination other than the original departure point, while Linienfahrten allow passengers to disembark anywhere en route, as is mostly the case with KD cruises.

The Weisse Flotter Rhein companies in geographical downstream order:

Bingen-Rüdesheimer Rhine River Day Cruise Pleasure Boat Line

Bingen-Rüdesheimer offers cruises in the Rüdesheim and Bingen area, as well as up to three daily cruises through the Loreley Valley to St Goar and St Goarhausen. Rüdesheim has a popular Christmas market and is one of the few towns along the Rhine that offers some cruises during the winter season. Bingen-Rüdesheimer still honors the tradition Geburtstagtarif — free cruises on a birthday. The child and bicycle fares are also slightly cheaper than KD and dogs mostly cruise for free.

See also Rhine River Cruises from Rüdesheim – a great town to start or conclude a Rhine day cruise.

Loreley Linie Weinand from Kamp Bornhofen

Loreley-Linie Weinand operates from Kamp Bornhofen with cruises to the Loreley Valley with stops mostly in Boppard, Kamp Bornhofen, Kestert, St Goar, and St Goarhausen. Once a week, it is possible to cruise all the way to Rüdesheim and back.

Bonner Personen Schiffahrt Rhine Cruises

Bonner Personen Schiffahrt cruises on the Rhine mostly from Bonn with panorama cruises in the former German capital as well as Rhine cruises mostly to Linz — some may be booked online. Cruises between Linz and Koblenz are rare and usually only for repositioning boats after Rhine in Flames fireworks shows.

Rössler Linie Rhine River Boat Cruises in Germany

Rössler Line is based in Rüdesheim-Assmannshausen. Rössler has mostly shorter Rhine cruises in the Rüdesheim vicinity but Rössler occasionally cruises down the Loreley Valley past Die Lorelei to St Goar / St Goarhausen. The shorter cruises in the popular Rüdesheim area may include visiting castles or winetastings — many may be booked online .

Köln Tourist Personenschiffahrt am Dom

Köln Tourist competes with KD in its home town Cologne. Although it offers some excursion cruises, it mostly operates panorama sightseeing cruises in the Cologne area including special harbor cruises and cruises with an emphasis on culinary events, dancing, and parties.

See also Loreley Valley Rhine River Day Cruises for tips on sensible routings and cruise times between towns from Koblenz to Mainz and Top Rhine Day Cruises from Cologne for similar information on cruises from Cologne (Köln), Bonn, and Düsseldorf.

  • Why should I choose a river cruise? A river cruise is a great comprehensive way to visit various countries in Europe. Unlike land tours where you might have to travel by train or bus during the day, cruises take advantage of the evenings and nights to do the major traveling and allow you to use your days to visit the destinations and sites. Plus, once you're onboard, the cruises are mostly all-inclusive. If you want to add on a helicopter tour or some kind of extension, then that might cost you more money, but the meals, lodging, trasnportation, and most tours on the itinerary are included in the price, making it not only an excellent value but also much easier to plan. Plus, unlike land tours of Europe, you don't have to pack and unpack every day when you move to a new city - your room simply glides along the river with you.
  • What should I look for on a riverboat? Unlike mega-yachts, bigger cruise ships, or expedition vessels, river boats are comparatively simple. They feature comfortable rooms, but they are not particularly spacious. You won't likely find gyms (maybe an exercise room), large pools (if any), or various dining options, but you will find that the vessels are well appointed and have friendly crews and guides that are enthusiastic to make your experience memorable.
  • Are there 5-star river vessels in Europe? Since river cruising is a relatively new trend in European travel, the best river vessels could best be described as 4-stars due to their size and lack of amenities. However, there are a number of vessels that we feature that could very aptly be called luxurious based on their accommodations, social areas, and gourmet cuisine. We expect that in the coming years, competition among the vessels will drive the quality up and more 5-star vessels will soon be on the European waterways.
  • Should I get a room with a balcony? Contrary to popular belief, balconies are not actually that important for European river cruises. All vessels feature a panoramic sun deck where you can take in the beautiful views, but as far as the rooms go, balconies might actually take away from the square footage of your cabin. Length requirements of river vessels mean that cabins tend to be smaller than on the sea-going ships, and balconies can often cut into the room itself. If you want a room that gives you exclusive access to the open air, then consider looking for rooms with sliding glass doors and wall-to-wall windows. These are a good alternative to balconies and save considerable space in your cabin.
  • What is dining like? There will likely be one main dining room that serves meals on a certain schedule that coincides with your itinerary. Food is prepared by skilled local chefs and will nourish you as you explore and discover German culture and history.
  • Do river cruises ever visit destinations that aren't on the river? Absolutely! So many of Germany's destinations are not actually on the Rhine, Main, or Danube Rivers. In order to access these sites, you will dock at one of the port cities along the river and enjoy a luxurious coach ride towards the destination, during which time you can see even more of the lush countryside.
  • Will my vessel have WiFi? Don't count on having WiFi throughout the entire cruise. While visiting cities, it's likely that you will find hotspots, and certain vessels are able to offer frequent access. However, there might be times when you are out of range of the signal and you might be without internet for up to several days at a time.
  • What kind of power outlets are there? Will I need a converter? European electric is 220 volts, compared to the 110 volts in North America. Most devices are equipped to deal with both voltages. However, you will need a plug adapter if you have the standard 2-prong American plugs - depending on where your boat is from in Europe, it will have either the British plugs (three flat prongs) or the continental European outlets (2 round prongs). A couple simple adapters are all you need, but we suggest wrapping duct tape around the adapter and the plug to make sure you don't forget them when you disconnect the device.
  • How can I save money on a river cruise? We offer many great deals for river cruises through Germany. These are the best options for saving up to thousands of dollars on your river expedition. Avoid saving money by choosing less expensive cabins. The difference of a couple hundred dollars can actually negatively impact your experience if you decide on a cabin that is smaller or does not have large windows that open, for example.
  • Are river cruises in Germany a good family vacation? Definitely! Whether you are exploring the country's traditional Christmas Markets in December or learning about its contemporary and ancient history, the sights and flavors of Germany make for a fantastic family destination. Younger kids will delight in the fairytale castles, while teens and parents can appreciate the impressive architecture of the centuries-old buildings. It's a great way to immerse your family in the Old World culture, history, and folklore.
  • Do Americans and Canadians need a passport and visa to travel to Germany? All citizens of North America traveling to Europe need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months. In recent years, it has not been necessary to apply for a visa before traveling to Europe if you plan to stay less than three months, however, this situation may change in the future. See current European visa requirements .

How Voting Works

What readers loved, the full list.

Taking a beat, a breath, and a moment to unwind is what travel is all about. And while this can be achieved on every vacation you take, it's always easier on a slow vacation, like the one you'd experience on a magical river cruise. This level of relaxation can really be found in riverways just about anywhere in the world — as long as you choose a winning cruise line like those on this year's World's Best Awards list. Our reader favorites service the waterways of Europe, South America, Asia, and beyond.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins.

Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Cabins/facilities
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Excursions/activities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Indeed, slow travel has become all the rage, with Travel + Leisure readers looking to river cruising to help them explore every inch of their destination at a leisurely 8.6 knots per hour.

"Our first river cruise was on Avalon Vista, and that experience turned us on to do more river cruising," one reader wrote about this year's No. 2 river cruise line, Avalon Waterways. "The trip was immediately a hit when we checked into our suite, and there was a bottle of Champagne and a box of chocolates for my birthday. Such a nice touch."

The reader also noted how spectacular the staff, food, and amenities were on board, but particularly called out the unbelievable excursion options, which on Avalon include wine tastings through France, kayaking the canals in Amsterdam, and learning something new with a cooking class through Austria.

But still, there was one river cruise line that captured the hearts of readers even more — their No. 1 pick, Aqua Expeditions. Read on to see what T+L travelers loved most about this line and all the rest who made this year's World's Best list.

Aqua Expeditions

Service. Service. Service. That's what T+L readers praised most about their experience on board Aqua Expeditions. "Exceptional service and staff. Unique excursions and experiences that you could not get anywhere else," one reader said. "It's hard to describe the casual luxury, the detail-oriented staff, the spacious cabins, and the general feeling of total relaxation that Aqua Mekong exudes," another added. "I can't stress how warm, welcoming, and ready to serve the entire staff is." The cruise line took home the No. 1 spot for the second year in a row thanks to this and more, including its distinct staterooms like those on its Aqua Mekong ship, which feature deep wood accents and emerald green pops of color, and its fantastic dining options on Aqua Nera , which serves local Peruvian cuisine using the freshest ingredients possible. "It was amazing," one more reader noted of their experience. "Beautiful areas, excellent service!"

It's hard to describe the casual luxury, the detail-oriented staff, the spacious cabins, and the general feeling of total relaxation that Aqua Mekong exudes.

How Much Does a German Christmas Markets Trip Cost? 2024 Budget

W hen you start thinking about a European Christmas Markets trip, you may first consider a Christmas Markets River Cruise and decide that it is too expensive. But you don’t need to take a river cruise to experience the holiday magic and a German Christmas Markets trip cost may be less than you expect.

I spent 10 days on a German Christmas Markets road trip and, while it took a little more planning than a river cruise would have, it was considerably less expensive.

This German Christmas Markets trip budget includes average costs for airfare , accommodations , transportation , food , and a few souvenirs . I will break down the individual costs below, but a one-week German Christmas Markets trip for two people will cost an average of $3,625, or $259 per person, per day.

German Christmas Market Trip Cost

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, I may receive a small commission at no cost to you.

Before we get into the details, here are some important considerations to keep in mind when you are planning a Christmas Markets Trip:

  • Germany has over 1,500 Christmas Markets with over 50 food stalls, and even more that are smaller. Don’t stress too much about visiting the most famous Christmas Markets. Sometimes the most enjoyable ones are the small towns that you have never heard of.
  • Most German Christmas Markets are only open from late November or early December through Christmas Eve. If you want to travel between Christmas and New Years, you will need to do more research and stick to larger cities that may have a longer season.
  • Some small town markets are only open on the weekends or evenings, so always be sure to check dates and times before you make your plan.
  • Most German Christmas Markets are located in the Altstadt or Old Town and accommodations closest to the markets will book up quickly. It is best to plan your trip three to six months in advance.
  • Be sure to purchase travel insurance in case weather or illness disrupts your vacation plans.
  • Make sure you get some local currency (Euros for German markets) in small denominations to use for food at the markets as not all stalls accept credit cards.
  • Visiting most Christmas Markets are free, but there are exceptions, such as Ravenna Gorge, which is only open on certain days and requires you to purchase timed entry tickets prior to your visit (and they sell out early.)

Airfare to Germany Cost

With major international hub airports like Frankfurt or Munich, getting to Germany is actually fairly affordable. You can typically find economy flights from major U.S. airports for as low as $600-700 per person.

I highly recommend signing up for a  flight deal subscription service such as Going to keep an eye out for sales. If you prefer to use points and miles, I’d suggest downloading the  Travel Freely app  to track your credit cards and learn how to earn points.

With so many German Christmas Markets to choose from, just choose your hub city and you can build your trip around that. For example, I have suggestions for Christmas Markets near Frankfurt or Stuttgart .

Total Airfare Cost: $1400 ($700 x 2 people)

Germany Accommodations Cost

In my experience, the hotels in Germany are generally quite affordable, at least compared to where we stayed in Strasbourg , France. When looking for hotels, you will want to try to find accommodations within walking distance to the Altstadt or Old Town, where the Christmas Markets are typically located.

Just keep in mind that not all hotels offer parking and others require parking reservations. Finding a hotel that has parking or there is convenient public parking nearby is important if you are driving. If you are taking the train, look for something within walking distance to the train station or along a U-Bahn line in the larger cities.

There are plenty of boutique hotels to choose from, many of which will include breakfast. In the larger cities, you can also find chain hotels if you are looking to use points. Generally, you should be able to find hotels for under $200 a night.

For example:

  • Breuer’s Rüdesheimer Schloss in Rüdesheim am Rhein ($170 per night including parking and breakfast)
  • Romantik Hotel Zur Glocke in Trier ($180 per night including breakfast)
  • Jaz in the City in Stuttgart ($160 per night)
  • Hotel Villa Marstall in Heidelberg ($167 per night)

Total Accommodations Cost: $1,225 ($175 x 7 nights)

Germany Transportation Costs

If you plan on visiting quite a few Christmas Markets, you will need to figure out how you want to get around. It is possible to stay in a larger city like Frankfurt, Munich, or Stuttgart and take day trips via the train. Another option is to take the train from town to town, since Germany has a very good train system. Of course, then you are more subject to train strikes, weather delays, and train schedules.

The train is quite affordable. For example, when we stayed in Stuttgart, we took the train to Ludwigsburg and to Esslingen for $5-12 each. For longer distances, it will cost a little more. For example, the train from Frankfurt to Heidelberg is about $15.

If you prefer to have a little more flexibility in your schedule (and a place to store your luggage for stops on the way), you can also rent a car and take a road trip. I rented a car for less than $300 for a 10-day trip. Of course, you will need to factor in the cost of parking and gas as well.

Total transportation cost: $200

Food Costs at German Christmas Markets

While one of the best things about the trip is eating all the yummy German Christmas Market foods . If you book a hotel that includes breakfast, you will likely eat most of your other meals at the markets. And unlike the prices at fairs and festivals in the United States, German Christmas Market foods are also quite affordable.

For example, a bratwurst sandwich is typically five or six euro. A cup of glühwein is usually four or five euro, with a one to two euro deposit that you get back if you return the mug (although keeping a few make great souvenirs.) You can have a full meal with bratwurst, käsespätzle, glühwein, and something sweet for dessert for 20 euro. Every now and then you may want to sit down at a proper restaurant and eat something besides market food (like schnitzel or a healthy salad) but those can be affordable also.

Total cost for food: $300   x 2 people = $600

Souvenir Costs

The German Christmas Markets are packed with beautiful handicrafts such as nutcrackers, Christmas ornaments, pyramids, wooden toys, Christmas stars, and more. You will want to look for locally-made products, as some of the larger markets have many vendors that sell imported goods.

The other thing to keep in mind is how you will get it all home. I strongly recommend bringing along a packable, reusable shopping bag to bring to the markets and an extra duffel bag for bring it all home. Remember that some of the larger items, like those beautiful wooden Christmas pyramids, can be quite pricey (hundreds of dollars) and take up a lot of space when carefully packaged for travel.

How much you spend really depends on how much and what you want to bring home to enhance your holiday decor or remember the trip. A few mugs and handmade ornaments don’t take up much space or cost a lot.

Total souvenir cost: $200

TOTAL German Christmas Market TRIP COST

A one-week German Christmas Market trip costs approximately $3,625 for two people traveling from the U.S. in early December, or $259 per person, per day. That’s much less than Christmas Markets river cruise, which costs about $3,800 per person!

Here’s What’s Trending in Cruising for 2024

Here’s What’s Trending in Cruising for 2024

Photo: Shutterstock.com / Mia2You

After a slow start to cruising in 2022 and even into parts of 2023, cruising is fully back and more popular than it’s ever been, with booking numbers repeatedly breaking pre-pandemic records. On a broad level, a few cruise trends are immediately clear. This year’s hot destinations are just as hot in 2024, though there’s a growing interest in cruises going further afield. Additionally, the line between who is a premium cruise client and who is luxury is starting to blur.

Here are the cruise trends TMR identified after talking with several travel advisors and executives.

Trending destinations Europe was hot in 2023. It’s even hotter in 2024.

“More Europe bookings,” Adam Martindale, owner of a Cruise Planners franchise told Travel Market Report.

It’s not only ocean cruises around Europe that are popular. We heard from several advisors that they’re booking lots of European river cruises.

“River is selling like fire in Europe,” said Ryan Warshaw, owner of Epic Jaunts. “People love the idea of getting into the small towns.”

River cruises are hot for Cynthia Connelly-Paxton, CTA, owner of Travel Advisor Team, as well, but so too is Alaska, something almost every advisor we spoke to echoed.

“Alaska is very popular,” Martindale said, while Amy Madson, co-owner of a Dream Vacations agency said, “”Alaska is top of list. We are booking a lot of Alaska cruise tours for 2024.”

But while the perennial favorites continue to trend upwards, so are more far-flung destinations, advisors told TMR.

“One of the things that’s really evident is that people are looking for what is different,” said Warshaw. For his agency that means requests for polar cruises, and Israel and the Middle East. “There really is a lot of desire to get into the polar regions  of the world… particularly for people who lost a couple of years during COVID, who are getting older and saying, ‘this has been on my bucket list and I need to do it while I can.'”

For Madson’s clients, it’s cruises to Egypt and Asia, while for Martindale’s clients, Antarctica and Egypt dominate his “exotic” requests.

Curious about luxury In 2023, we heard from travel advisors that clients were splurging on suites. This year, instead of the suite life, many clients are looking to move from main stream to premium or from premium to luxury.

“We have been receiving more inquiries and bookings for luxury river cruises,” said Martindale. “We have many clients moving from premium cruise lines to luxury lines.”

In some cases, the move is from larger premium ships to smaller upper-premium and luxury ships, primarily because the value is similar across the brands, but the capacity on the upper-premium and luxury vessels is “much reduced.”

“In the past few years, we’ve seen a remarkable trend where travelers are buying more premium staterooms, plus a viable growth in luxury brand sales,” added Michelle Fee, founder, and CEO of Cruise Planners. “Travelers are spending more and once they have that luxury experience, the bar is set for future experiences to match that.”

Longer trips still preferred Another 2023 trend that’s continuing into 2024 is the desire for longer cruises, particularly on trips that require international air.

“We’re also seeing a lot of people who want to take longer trips, which I think is probably driven by air travel headaches,” Warshaw said.

“If the trip includes an international flight, they still want the seven-plus night cruises,” added Connelly-Paxton.

Madson told TMR she’s seeing much the same. “We’re seeing more of the longer cruise bookings. Europe for 10 days-plus, longer transatlantic crossings and unique itineraries.

But Warshaw also told TMR he believes part of what’s driving the longer trip trend is clients’ desires to see destinations more in-depth.

“We’re hearing a lot more people ask, how do we get more time in port? How do we get more overnights?”

But Drew Daly, senior vice president and general manager for Dream Vacations/CruiseOne, told TMR advisors shouldn’t count shorter cruises out.

“As we move closer towards the end of the year, we have seen a good mix of bookings between short and longer cruises… When we review bookings from last year at this time going into the next year compared to the booking data from this year, it does appear that there is a slight shift focusing in on the shorter cruise length… this is largely due to new itineraries, inventory and it is also a good sign of ‘new to cruise.'”

Another trend, Daly said the Dream Vacations network is seeing is people taking more than one cruise each year, for instance one longer family vacation plus a weekend getaway cruise.

Expanding booking window While we keep hearing there are still some clients calling for last minute cruise bookings, generally speaking, people are booking far out… even into 2025.

“Definitely, people are booking farther in advance,” Connelly-Paxton told TMR.

“Most people are booking between six to 12 months out,” said Martindale. “We have a large amount of bookings for 2025 already, mostly on luxury cruises.”

“We’re booking into June 2024,” Madson said. “We have group bookings into 2025.”

One agency franchise group that wished to remain anonymous shared North American booking numbers with TMR that backup what travel advisors said, particularly in Europe. The booking window for cruises to Europe is more than 360 days for 36% of all bookings, with bookings 270 to 359 days before sail date representing 16% of all bookings, and 180 to 269 days before sail date representing 18% of all bookings.

The booking window is shorter for domestic cruises. For instance, 28% of Alaska bookings were made 90 to 179 days before the sail date, whereas 19% of bookings made 360 days or more before sail date.

Open to new cruise lines In addition to an interest in “new” destinations, advisors told TMR that clients are also open to considering new cruise lines, though for the most part they’re not outright asking for them.

“Honestly, clients aren’t coming to us with those requests” Madson told TMR. “Based on qualification, we may recommend these products.”

“We have clients showing interest in Atlas, Virgin, and Explora but mainly because we educate and offer these brands to them,” Martindale added.

Warshaw and Connelly-Paxton were the only advisors we spoke to who said they’re actively getting requests for new cruise lines – though for Connelly-Paxton those requests are limited to Virgin Voyages.

“Atlas, Ritz, Explora, they’ve all spent an incredible amount of seven and eight-figure money on marketing,” said Warshaw. “You can’t get a Travel + Leisure magazine without flipping it pen and seeing a full-page ad for all of them. People who are seeing these advertisements are asking questions.”

High pricing, lower value One thing all the advisors we spoke to agree on was that pricing is high. As a result, and because of some of the other changes cruise lines are making, the value of cruising has gone down a bit.

“The prices have greatly increased,” said Connelly-Paxton told TMR.

“Cruising is still a great value, but with pricing so high for summer 2024, some of our clients are rethinking their family vacations,” Madson said. “They are more open to shifting to off-season to find a better value.”

“You’re definitely seeing some of the promotionality lighten up,” added Warshaw. “The value is there but it all comes down to what brand makes the most sense.”

In some cases, advisors and clients are being more discerning about the brands that they choose to sell/cruise, in order to find better value.

“A large percentage of our bookings are with Oceania,” said Martindale. “Their new ‘simply more’ program seems more attractive and a better value to our clients.”

“I’ve moved some of my quotes to Princess and Holland – current promo includes gratuities – away from NCL and Celebrity due to their more inclusive offers,” Madson added.

Warshaw said his clients are seeing less value not from the lack of promos and booking perks, but from the erosion of loyalty benefits.

“People feel like the loyalty programs of some of the lines are getting weaker. We are seeing people who historically have said ‘I’m chasing status with this brand’ open up to something else because they’re not getting the same perks they used to and those were the reasons they chose that line.”

2024 worries It seems some travel advisors may still be feeling a little pandemic PTSD, as fears of changing regulations and governmental policies are still prevalent.

Connelly-Paxton told TMR she still worries about the return of COVID travel restrictions, while Warshaw said it’s still top of mind for his client.

“I still get asked multiple times a week, do I need an injection? Do I need a COVID test,” he said.

But Warshaw added he’s more concerned about changing policies related to ports, like in Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Venice, which can adversely affect clients’ vacations.

“As those places shut down, they have to move the itinerary, which is well within their right but that’s not always consumer friendly, when clients are saying I booked this cruise because it was going to X and now we’re not going to X.”

Madson told TMR she’s more worried about finding clients to book cruises in 2024 and 2025 because so many of her clientele has already booked.

“We have nearly $2 million in departures booked for 2024 already, so we always wonder if the bookings will slow down. Sometimes we fell that all of our key clients are already booked, so who’s left to sell to?
