You travel through beautiful scenery to  Þingvellir National Park  (Thingvellir). This is one of the most incredible geological wonders of the world and also the place where Icelandic history was made. The Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi, was founded here in 930, making it the oldest continuously existing parliament in the world. The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates have been slowly edging apart, creating a stunning rift valley that runs right through Þingvellir. The rugged cliff of this valley forms a dramatic and atmospheric backdrop to the place where the Law Speaker, the supreme Icelandic Chieftain, would stand to proclaim the law. A flag marks the law rock (lögberg), where the greatest decisions in the history of the Icelandic people were declared. What an incredible photo opportunity!

Next on the agenda is the  Geysir geothermally active area . Great Geysir, the spouting hot spring whose fame gave us the English word ‘geyser´ to describe this activity, is inactive nowadays. You will see Strokkur, a nearby erupting hot spring that erupts huge volumes of superheated water every 8 to 10 minutes. These boiling water spouts often soar to 25 m, but sometimes the scalding jets will be propelled 40 m skywards. Watching a geyser erupt is always a stunning and incredible moment.

Another attraction is the most famous waterfall in Iceland, the magnificent Gullfoss  (the “Golden Falls). The river flowing through Gullfoss is the mighty Hvítá (the White River). This river originates at Langjökull glacier, the 2nd largest glacier in Iceland. Feel the spray in the air as the thundering torrent is forced through the canyon, dropping 32 m in two stages, pivoting as it does so. You will see plenty of golden-hued spray around Gullfoss, the Golden Falls!

The final highlight of the tour is Kerid crater lake . It's a 3000-year-old spot 55 meters deep and most recognized for its beauty – aquamarine-colored water surrounded by red rocks and greenery. This color scheme is what makes the lake look like a giant eye from above. For this reason, it's called "The Eye of the World."

If you want to extend your tour you could book an additional Northern Lights tour at night, please select it during the booking process.

Here you should wait for your guide.

Have your email and phone number listed with us so we can contact you if we run into any trouble finding you.

View our   pick-up locations   in Reykjavík.

Can I drink alcohol before or during Arctic Adventures tours?

Another option would be the   Landmannalaugar Safari   on this tour you get to explore parts of the Icelandic highlands and bathe in natural hot springs. Most of our jeep tours are also suitable for children over the age of 6 years old. If you would like a nice and relaxing experience we would also recommend the Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon   tour.

T he Kolviður Fund   is the oldest, most respected carbon offsetting program in Iceland. With your support, one tree will be planted in special Kolviður forests in Iceland to carbon offset your tour with us.

Our fantastic afternoon tour of the Golden Circle begins with our fast and efficient pick up service. We offer pickup from a wide range of downtown locations. Once everyone is aboard, we head out of the city to explore some of the highlights of the South-west of Iceland.

golden circle afternoon tour iceland

The first stop on our tour is Thingvellir National Park, also known as Þingvellir. This area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has enormous geological and historical significance, as well as importance to Icelandic culture in general.

There are two main reasons that visitors flock to Thingvellir. Firstly, it is the site where the world’s oldest parliament was once located. Secondly, it is where the mid-atlantic ridge crests and the North American and Eurasian continental plates meet in dramatic fashion.

Thingvellir was the first home of the world’s oldest continuous parliament. The parliament that was formed here is known as the Alþingi and meetings were held here between 930 AD and 1798 AD. Viking chieftains and leaders from throughout Iceland would make the long journey to this assembly site once or twice a year to discuss shared matters of common interest and laws. The parliament is now located in the capital city of Reykjavík but Thingvellir still holds a special significance to Icelanders to this day.

The area is best known however for the rift valley located between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The plates are drifting apart by upto 2.5cm per year and this can best be seen in a dramatic gorge called Almannagjá which is 7.7 km long. Visitors can walk through a portion of the gorge. Nearby the Silfra Fissure offers divers and snorkelers the chance to explore between the plates.

Nearby is Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland´s largest natural lake.

geysir in winter

After Thingvellir we will make our way to the Geothermal area of Geysir in Haukadalur Valley. This hot spring filled area is named after the “Great Geysir”. It is the first geyser ever mentioned in print and the English word ‘geyser’ actually derives from the Icelandic. This makes it one of the very few Icelandic words that have been adopted in English.

Geysir is thought to have been active for 10,000 years, but activity has almost completely ceased in the past few decades. Luckily nearby is a more active geyser called Strokkur which erupts frequently. Strokkur can be relied upon to erupt every 10 minutes or so. This eruption of boiling water and steam can reach a height of upto 50-60 ft in the air, but has been known to go as high as 130 ft.

golden circle afternoon tour iceland

We next stop at the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall. Known as the “Golden Falls”, Gullfoss is a large waterfall fed by the Hvítá river, itself fed by meltwater from Langjökull glacier which looms large to the north. The water falls over a series of sections measuring 32 meters in total. As a glacier river, the waterfall is more powerful in the summer. The average flow rate here is 140 cubic meters per second in summer but it has been recorded at a mind-blowing 2000 meters per second.

As the water cascades over the river bed, the mineral composition of the bed creates the shimmering effect from which the name Golden Falls derives. As you approach the waterfall you cannot immediately see the bottom of the falls leaving you with a visual of water seemingly running into a large void into the earth. On a sunny day, the mist spray from Gullfoss often creates a beautiful rainbow.

golden circle afternoon tour iceland

Our final stop on the Golden Circle is Kerið Volcanic Crater. Formed during an eruption around 6500 years ago, the crater bottom is now covered byn a picturesque lake. It is renowned for its color contrasts in colors – red-ish mineral sediment, black lava rocks, and blue-ish lake water – all coalescing to create a beautiful display. There is a walking path around the top of the crater to soak in the wonder from all angles  and one can also descend down to the water´s edge.

*A friendly reminder: We won’t be stopping at the Kerid volcanic crater lake for any departures at 12:00 pm and after.

We head back to the city after our Kerið stop.

We drop you back to the same location from which we collected you earlier in the day.

Our tour commences at Thingvellir National Park , also referred to as Þingvellir. This UNESCO World Heritage site holds immense geological, historical, and cultural significance for Iceland.

Thingvellir is a destination of dual allure. Firstly, it was the historic home of the world’s oldest parliament, the Alþingi, which convened between 930 AD and 1798 AD. Chieftains and leaders from across Iceland undertook arduous journeys to this assembly, held once or twice annually, to deliberate over shared concerns and laws. Though the parliament is now situated in Reykjavík, Thingvellir continues to hold a special place in the hearts of Icelanders.

Secondly, Thingvellir lies at the juncture of the mid-Atlantic ridge, where the North American and Eurasian continental plates dramatically converge. This rift valley between the tectonic plates, manifesting in the awe-inspiring 7.7 km-long Almannagjá gorge, remains the area’s focal point. The plates steadily drift apart by up to 2.5 cm annually. Visitors can venture through a portion of Almannagjá, while the nearby Silfra Fissure beckons divers and snorkelers to explore the space between the plates.

Adjacent to this marvel lies Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest natural lake.

Þingvellir National Park - Golden Circle Iceland Tour

Following our visit to Thingvellir , we’ll journey to the geothermal wonderland of Geysir in Haukadalur Valley. This area, brimming with hot springs, derives its name from the famed “Great Geysir.” Notably, this is the first geyser to be mentioned in written records, and the English term ‘geyser’ itself is derived from the Icelandic language. This marks one of the rare instances where an Icelandic word has been embraced into English vocabulary.

Geysir has been active for approximately 10,000 years, though its activity has waned significantly in recent decades. Fortunately, the vicinity boasts a more lively geyser named Strokkur, which erupts with remarkable frequency. Strokkur reliably sends forth its explosive display of boiling water and steam roughly every 10 minutes. These eruptions can reach heights of up to 50-60 feet into the sky, and on rare occasions, they’ve soared as high as 130 feet.

Golden Circle Tours, Geysir Geothermal Area - Golden Circle Iceland Tour

Our following destination brings us to the awe-inspiring Gullfoss waterfall , also known as the “Golden Falls.” Gullfoss stands as a grandeur in its own right, fueled by the waters of the Hvítá river, which itself receives its source from the melting Langjökull glacier that majestically towers to the north. This sprawling cascade unfolds over a series of tiers, spanning a collective drop of 32 meters. Given its glacier-fed origin, Gullfoss holds heightened power during the summer months. Throughout this season, the average flow rate achieves a remarkable 140 cubic meters per second, with astonishing records reaching an extraordinary 2000 cubic meters per second.

As the water gracefully descends over the riverbed, the mineral composition of the terrain lends the water a shimmering allure, contributing to the apt moniker of Golden Falls. Approaching the waterfall, its base often remains concealed from immediate view, creating the illusion of water flowing into a vast chasm within the earth. On sunlit days, Gullfoss’s misty spray frequently gives birth to a captivating rainbow.

Golden Circle Tours, Gullfoss waterfall in Golden Circle Iceland Tour Packages

Our concluding destination on the Golden Circle is the Kerið Volcanic Crater . Created during an eruption approximately 3000 years ago, the crater’s basin now cradles a charming lake. Its distinctive allure lies in its captivating color contrasts – a blend of reddish mineral sediment, black lava rocks, and bluish lake waters harmoniously combine to form a mesmerizing tableau. A walkway encircles the crater’s rim, offering the opportunity to bask in its wonder from various viewpoints, and for those eager to get closer, a descent to the water’s edge is also possible.

As we reach this juncture, our day tour sadly comes to an end. Nevertheless, there are still captivating sights to behold from the bus as we transport you back to Reykjavik.

For those seeking to augment their experience with a geothermal lagoon visit, the “ Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon ” option awaits. We also provide a small group alternative that follows the Golden Circle route while incorporating extra stops through our “ Golden Circle Tour of Iceland ” Premium minibus tour.

Must-See 8.5 Hour Afternoon Sightseeing Tour of the Golden Circle with Transfer from Reykjavik

golden circle afternoon tour iceland

Description

Take a spin around the most famous sites in Iceland on this afternoon Golden Circle! This tour is for anyone who loves the countryside, natural wonders and has only a short time to maximise in Iceland. The Golden Circle is absolutely a must-see in order to understand the history and culture of the nation.

You’ll be picked up at your designated pickup location and driven down the beautiful south coast to three vital sites: Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir geothermal area.

Þingvellir National Park is a gorgeous example of Iceland’s varied volcanic terrain, as well as a site that holds tremendous cultural meaning. It was here in this place that the world’s first parliament was founded more than 1000 years ago. You will also see how the valley is carved delicately between the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, edging gradually onto the shores of Þingvallavatn, the largest natural lake in Iceland. While here, you can walk between two tectonic plates.

On your next stop, you’ll see Gullfoss waterfall, in which glacial runoff pours down the two-tiered fall into the canyon below. The speed and power of the river Hvitá makes it a favourite place for those who love river rafting.

Geysir geothermal area is home to the first geyser discovered in the West. All other geysers in the world are named after it. The Great Geysir, active for more than 10,000 years, is currently at rest, but nearby Strokkur explodes with activity every 10 minutes or so, blasting water into the air as high as 40 m (131 ft).

Seats fill quickly on this very popular tour in Iceland! Don’t miss your chance to experience the famous Golden Circle and you too can experience some of the best Iceland has to offer. Check the booking availability by choosing a date.

Golden Circle Afternoon Tour

golden circle afternoon tour iceland

Golder Circle afternoon tour will take you to the most popular attractions in Iceland. See the skyrocketing boiling water at Geysir, feel the majestic power of the Gullfoss waterfall and explore unique history and geology at Thingvellir National Park.

Note : The tour is operated by our trusted partner. The minimum allowed age for travelers is 6 years.

  • Small Group Experience
  • Gullfoss Waterfall
  • Þingvellir National Park (Thingvellir)
  • Geysir Hot Spring Area
  • Kerid crater lake

You will travel through beautiful scenery to Thingvellir National Park during this express tour. Thingvellir is one of the most exciting geology places on Earth and a place of rich history. It is where the first Icelandic Parliament, Alþingi, was founded in 930. The Eurasian and North American tectonic plates have been shifting apart, forming a stunning rift through Þingvellir. This one is definitely on the top of the list while visiting Iceland!

Next on our agenda is another natural miracle - the Geysir geothermal area. Geysir, which gave the English name "geyser" to describe this phenomenon, is one of the most visited places in Iceland. The boiling water erupts to 25-40 meters high every 8-10 minutes. Watching the geyser erupt is an incredible view at any moment.

Another attraction on our agenda is the wonderful Gullfoss, the most famous waterfall in Iceland. The water is forced through the canyon, dropping 32 meters in two stages. The river that feeds this powerful waterfall is Hvítá, originating from the Langjökull glacier.

The final highlight of the tour is Kerid Crater Lake. It's a 3000-year-old spot 55 meters deep and most recognized for its beauty – aquamarine-colored water surrounded by red rocks and greenery. This color scheme is what makes the lake look like a giant eye from above. For this reason, it's called "The Eye of the World."

We really loved this tour, so well organised and our guide (Margret) was brilliant. All three stops were amazing and all had rest rooms, cafes and shops - there wasn’t a huge amount of time after seeing the attractions in each place but this is a shorter tour so we planned for this and took food with us. If you’re in Iceland with limited time, this is definitely the tour for you!
