The European Tour's longest hitter is done in by distance in South Africa

1287036743

A tee shot that went too long on the par-3 17th hole set up this awkward shot for Wilco Nienaber that led to a bogey.

Stuart Franklin

Ironically, both of what proved to be the decisive moments in the final round of the Joburg Open on Sunday were shots that flew too far.

Three days after hitting the drive that echoed around the world of golf— a 439-yard bomb off the tee at the 597-yard par-5 fourth hole on the Randpark course during the opening round of the European Tour event—Wilco Nienaber arrived on the penultimate tee tied for the lead with Joachim B. Hansen. Unfortunately for Nienaber, a 20-year-old South African, that was as good as things would get. His tee shot on the 223-yard par-3 17th finished inches from the water that runs behind and left of the putting surface. A bogey, his first of the day, was the almost inevitable result from the awkward spot, the dropped shot putting Hansen one shot clear.

Perhaps fueled by adrenaline, Nienaber—statistically the longest hitter on tour with a driving average of 336.81 yards—found a fairway bunker with an iron off the 18th tee. Unable to reach the green in regulation at the 507-yard par 4, he again failed to match Hansen’s up-and-down par. Thus, the winning margin was two shots for Hansen, a 30-year-old Dane as he earned his maiden European Tour victory with a closing 67 and a 19-under-par 265 total.

For the record, another South African, Shaun Norris was third, three shots behind the new champion, with former Scottish and South African Open champion Brandon Stone among a three-strong group in fourth place.

“This is very emotional for me,” said a tearful Hansen, who had trailed by as many as three shots after Nienaber made three consecutive birdies on the front nine. “This is what I have worked so hard for. Wilco is quite a player. He hits the ball so far and has so many advantages. But I stuck to my game plan. All I could do was keep doing the things I had been doing for the first three days. And that proved to be good enough.”

1287039137

Joachim B. Hansen grabbed his first career European Tour win with a closing 67.

There was special mention, too, for Hansen’s work on the greens. “I almost never missed a putt inside six feet,” he said at the end of what was only his 10th top-10 finish in 146 European Tour events. “And I holed a lot of long ones too.”

While Hansen’s success is a tribute to his perseverance, what this 19,500,000 ZAR event (approximately $1,271,886) will be most remembered for is that tee shot Nienaber hit on Thursday.

The former South African amateur champion’s gargantuan blast, one that finished almost exactly 99 yards past Bryson DeChambeau’s average tee shot on the PGA Tour, does, however, come with an asterisk. Sitting on the eastern plateau of South Africa known as the Highveld, Johannesburg is 5,751 feet above sea level, the thin air a hugely contributing factor in how far every shot travels.

The Cape’s climate is perfect for growing wine. A lot of the wineries also have great restaurants and is a must in the Stellenbosch and Constantia region.

Whale & Shark Watching

Hermanus is regarded as the whale watching capital of South Africa, where you can witness a spectacular display of raw power and elegance of water acrobatics.

The Garden Route

The Garden Route refers to the stunning stretch of coast between Mossel Bay and the Storms River. It offers a spectacular coastline of dramatic headlands which give way to white sandy beaches.

Whether in the Cape or in Kruger , from Lions to Rhinos, a stay at any of the large selection of game reserves to see the Big 5 animals is a must on any South African holiday itinerary.

The ultimate luxury journey, staying in stunning accommodation on the train whilst playing the best courses in South Africa, including Durban Country Club and Leopard Creek Country Club.

It has two outstanding championship golf courses, one of which is an annual European Tour host, as well as a waterpark, casino and nearby game reserves.

Explore South Africa

Direct flights from the UK to Cape Town or Johannesburg are around 11 hours via British Airways, with Durban being the generally cheaper flight option. Internal flights are frequent and extremely good value for those building a multi-destination itinerary.

When to Visit

On the whole, South Africa boasts a much better climate than here in the UK, however across different regions and cities, the temperatures vary. Durban can be humid but tends to have a consistent climate year round. The summer months in Cape Town are warm and dry, with average temperatures of 23-25°c. Winter can be wet and windy, but the sun still shines and the average winter temperature is around 17°c.

A South African Adventure

The golf courses are simply breathtaking and while the six courses I played, from Arabella which lies just an from Cape Town, to the amazing Fancourt Resort in George, home to Africa's top ranked golf course, were all superb, it was Pinnacle Point that really jumped off the page. The course sits high atop the cliffs overlooking Mossel Bay and is pure drama from start to finish. The only thing that could top that course I suppose is a crack at the Extreme 19th at Legend Golf & Safari Resort, something I was lucky to do during our stay at the Entabeni Safari Reserve.

There's so much more to South Africa than just the golf though. The food and wine is to die for and Franschoek, where you'll find restaurants like the heavenly La Petite Ferme, is ideal for foodies and wine lovers. I think the best thing about South Africa though is the sense of adventure you get when you're there. There's so much to do and see so from zip-lining over jungle canyons cage diving with Great Whites, to the cable car ride up Table Mountain and a fascinating excursion to Robben Island; a holiday here is just go, go, go from start to finish.

A step forward for global golf: european tour, sunshine tour partner to elevate game in south africa, share this article.

golf south africa european tour

The European Tour and the Sunshine Tour have formed a new partnership that should not only elevate golf in South Africa but recognize its contributions to global golf. The European Tour announced that it is committed to improving the existing international pathway between the two Tours by co-sanctioning the South African Open through 2025, continuing to stage three Challenge Tour events in South Africa and creating several new co-sanctioned events that will appear on both the Challenge and Sunshine Tour schedules.

“For many years the European Tour has greatly valued the relationship we have enjoyed with the Sunshine Tour and today’s announcement is the next step in that journey together,” Keith Pelley, Chief Executive of the European Tour, said in a release.

“Through the leadership, vision and commitment of Chairman Johann Rupert, the Sunshine Tour has not only flourished and produced many of the game’s greats over decades, it is also part of the ecosystem that is at the very core of professional golf. We have been proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Sunshine Tour on this pathway for over a quarter of a century and we very much look forward to continuing this partnership for many years to come.”

The first event co-sanctioned by the European and Sunshine Tours, the Lexington South African PGA Championship, was played in February 1995. A familiar name, Ernie Els, took home the trophy that week. Since then, the two tours have combined close to 100 times.

South Africa ranks fourth on the list of most successful nations in European Tour history, behind only England, the U.S. and Spain. Several major winners have South African roots – not only Els but Retief Goosen, Charl Schwartzel, Louis Oosthuizen, Trevor Immelman and of course Gary Player.

The move drew support from the PGA Tour, the European Tour’s Strategic Alliance Partner.

“We are thrilled to see these two leading golf organizations come together for the benefit of the global game, players and fans,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan. “The European Tour and Sunshine Tour each have rich histories, celebrated events and a proven record of developing some of the world’s best players. This new partnership further illustrates the strengthening ecosystem of professional golf that we have all worked together to build for the betterment of the game.”

My wife and I recently used Golf 2 Africa for a wonderful golf holiday in South Africa. They did an excellent job, sorting out pick ups at the airport, transfers to a first class guest house in Pretoria, then as a result of their recommendation we stayed at Wildside Camp, Entebeni for 4 days. Our tour guide was excellent, we saw lots of the animals, including lions, cheetah, rhino, elephants and lots of antelope. We were then transferred to Rovos Rail for 9 wonderful days of golf. Every part of the holiday arranged by Golf 2 Africa was first class.

Having just returned from a 3 week golfing holiday arranged by Golf 2 Africa, and as our group leader I would like to say just how much we enjoyed the whole trip. This is the second holiday we have booked through Golf 2 Africa and I must say the organization was second to none. The hotels and golf courses selected for us were top notch as was our guide Pete who took care of every detail. I can thoroughly recommend any holiday arranged by Quintin and his staff. We will be visiting South Africa again and will definitely let them handle all the arrangements. SUPERB!!

Ernie Els wins, Bernhard Langer ties for third at 2024 Principal Charity Classic on PGA Tour Champions

DES MOINES, Iowa — The fourth time is the charm.

It took four appearances at the Principal Charity Classic for Ernie Els to get his first win there, with the South Africa native simultaneously earning his first PGA Tour Champions win this season.

“It’s very special,” Els said. “I haven’t won for a while, and I’ve had quite a few chances. But it gets tougher when you don’t get it over the line.”

Els finished at 21-under 195, winning by two strokes.

The 54-year-old had two birdies on the front nine Sunday and three more on the back. He picked up an eagle on lucky number 13, which gave Els the padding needed for the win, even with making par on the final three holes.

“I was lucky enough to make birdie on 11,” Els said. “I didn’t need a very good approach, made a good putt. And then 12, but 13 was big to make eagle late on the back nine, that was key. Got me into a three-shot lead, and (I) kept with it.”

The win at the Wakonda Club marked the first PGA Tour Champions win of the season for Els, who entered the Principal Charity Classic ranked 16th in the Schwab Cup Standings through eight events.

He claimed the winner’s purse of $300,000, which brings his total winnings the $785,017 this season. Els has now finished in the top 10 three times this season, including third-place ties in the Regions Tradition and Chubb Classic and a tie for sixth at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship.

Els finished two shots ahead of Stephen Ames, the tournament's defending champion, but it was a close race throughout. Four players were tied for first after finishing the front nine: Ames, Rod Pampling, Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer.

Then, the front group started to split apart.

Ames picked up two birdies to start the back nine, then made par on 12 and 13, and saved par on 14. Els made par on 10, then picked up back-to-back birdies and an eagle on the next three holes to take a two-shot lead. Langer also hit par to start the back nine, then made three birdies in a row before a bogey on 14.

Els’ eagle on lucky number 13 that proved to be the winning shot in Sunday’s competition.

But holistically, he played his best tournament of the year, leading after the first two rounds and hanging on through the final day in Des Moines.

“I had a good game plan,” Els responded when asked about his three-day lead. “I stuck with it all three days. I’ve put the work in and you feel a bit more confident that every aspect of the game is there.

“Then you can just go out there and compete. It was a hell of a week. Everybody played well and just that one hole maybe got it for me. Number 13.”

Els – who thanked the greens staff for the “true championship course” and the weather for cooperating – plans to return to Des Moines.

“We as players love playing here. As long as I can, I’ll come back, especially if I keep winning.”

Ageless wonder Langer, who tore his Achilles tendon while playing pickleball on just four months ago, shot a 63 on Saturday, the 15th time the 66-year-old has shot his age or better on PGA Tour Champions. On Sunday, he shot 68 and tied for third alongside Duval and Pampling.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Ernie Els won the Principal Charity Classic on Sunday for his fourth career PGA Tour Champions victory, closing with a 7-under 65 at Wakonda Club to beat defending champion Stephen Ames by two strokes.

Tied with Rod Pampling for the second-round lead, Els eagled the par-5 15th and had five birdies in his bogey-free final round. The 54-year-old Hall of Famer from South Africa finished at 21-under 195 for his first victory since March 2023 .

“It’s very special,” Els said. “You know, I haven’t won for a while. I’ve had quite a few chances, but it gets tougher when you don’t get it over the line. So today was very, very competitive. A lot of players, a lot of great players. I just took my chance when it came.”

Ames shot 66. He leads the tour with two victories this season.

Bernard Langer tied for third at 17 under after a 68. Making his fourth start since returning from an Achilles injury, the 66-year-old German star is the tour’s career victory leader with 46.

Pampling (69) and David Duval (67) also were 17 under.

Bowlers dominate in big wins for South Africa and Afghanistan at cricket’s Twenty20 World Cup

WESTBURY, New York (AP) — Sri Lanka was blown away for 77 by South Africa and Afghanistan skittled Uganda for 58 as the bowling attacks dominated in lopsided wins Monday at cricket’s Twenty20 World Cup.

Anrich Nortje’s career-best 4-7 set South Africa up for a six-wicket opening victory and Fazal Haq Farooqi’s maiden five-wicket haul — he returned 5-9 — helped Afghanistan to a 125-run win over tournament newcomer Uganda.

South Africa overcame its own hiccups on the two-paced pitch to reach 80-4 with 3.4 overs to spare at the purpose-built Nassau County Stadium on Long Island.

South Africa’s best bowling performance in tournament history also included pace bowler Kagiso Rabada’s 2-21, spinner Keshav Maharaj’s 2-22, and fast bowler Ottneil Baartman’s 1-9 in his second T20.

Opener Kusal Mendis top-scored for Sri Lanka with a 30-ball 19, one of only three scores in double figures. The Sri Lankans were dismissed in 19.1 overs.

Skipper Wanindu Hasaranga took 2-22 but South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen remained calm to finish off proceedings for the Proteas with an unbeaten 19.

“We did well to restrict them to a low score,” man-of-the-match Nortje said. “It was an up-and-down wicket, so it was important to get early wickets. These drop-in pitches are tough to bowl on.”

Tougher to bat on.

Sri Lanka opted to bat first and misread the variable bounce.

Baartman had Pathum Nissanka caught behind for 3. Nortje removed Kamindu Mendis, caught at square leg on 11. Hasaranga was surprisingly promoted to No. 4 but was stumped for a two-ball duck. Next ball, Maharaj bowled Sadeera Samarawickrama for a golden duck. Sri Lanka lost its last four wickets for nine runs across 27 deliveries.

In hindsight, on a pitch that didn’t allow for the usual big T20 hits, Sri Lanka would have been competitive with a total of 100.

“To be honest this was a 120-run wicket, especially with our bowlers,” Hasaranga said.

South Africa made a poor start in front of the crowd of 12,562, losing opener Reeza Hendricks (4) in the second over.

Quinton de Kock scored 20 runs off 27 balls before Klaasen and David Miller combined for 22 off 21 balls.

At only 4.2 runs per over, the match featured the lowest run-rate in a T20 World Cup.

At Providence, Guyana, openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz (76) and Ibrahim Zadran (70) put on a 154-run opening stand that set Afghanistan on course for 183-4. Farooqi took two wickets on consecutive balls in the first over and narrowly missed another chance for a hat-trick as Uganda tumbled to the fourth-lowest total at a T20 World Cup.

The contrast between the teams was starkly demonstrated with the second ball of each innings

Gurbaz drove the second ball of the match for a six.

Ronak Patel was bowled on the second ball of Uganda’s reply by Farooqi.

Uganda captain Brian Masaba had won the toss and decided to field in the hope that an early tournament trend would continue — chasing teams won the first four matches. That streak has ended.

It took Masaba (2-21) until the 15th over to take Uganda’s first wicket at a T20 World Cup, dismissing Zadran to break Afghanistan’s opening stand.

“First game of the World Cup, a lot of nerves — right now I feel it’s good to get that out of the way,” Masaba said. “We will look to play better next game.”

Gurbaz went with the addition of two to the total and then the run-rate as Afghanistan lost five wickets for 29 off the last 6 1/2 overs.

Any chance that Uganda had was over in the first power play, with Farooqi taking his two wickets with consecutive perfectly pitched in-swinging deliveries in the first over and Naveen-ul-Haq (2-4) getting two wickets to have the African qualifiers reeling at 21-5 after six overs.

Only two Ugandan batters reached double figures before Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan (2-12) finished off the innings with two wickets in the 16th over.

Rashid said it was the kind of start Afghanistan needed, adding that World Cup experience in both the 50-over and T20 formats has given his team a lot of confidence.

“We played against the big teams and we have given them a tough time,” Rashid said. “That really gives us the kind of belief that we are capable of beating any side any time.”
