- Soudal-Quick-Step roster for the 2024 Tour de France:

Remco Evenepoel (BEL) Jan Hirt (CZE) Yves Lampaert (BEL) Mikel Landa (ESP) Gianni Moscon (ITA) Casper Phillip Pedersen (DEN) Ilan Van Wilder (BEL) Louis Vervaeke (BEL) Sports Directors: Davide Bramati (ITA) Dries Devenyns (BEL) Klaas Lodewyck (BEL) Tom Steels (BEL)

- Soudal-Quick-Step directeur sportif Tom Steels: "With both Remco and Mikel on the team we can aim for a good result in the general classification. Mikel has a lot of experience, as do many of our riders, and together they make for quite a strong and balanced team. Looking on the parcours, I think you can easily say this will be one of the toughest editions in recent years. The start is very hard, we have some big climbs early in the race followed by that gravel stage, and then the second and third week will be very demanding. We need to be focused and at the top of our game to get some good results, and we are confident in this team and what it can do this July."

I went on a recon of the start in Bilbao, and I can tell you it will be a beautiful and hard weekend. At the beginning of the month I did a solid Dauphiné, where I felt in good shape, got a win and took pleasure in riding, and the preparations went well. The Tour is a truly huge adventure, every day you have to fight together with the team, and has a really special atmosphere, with all the people along the roads. I’m ready for Le Tour."

- Ralph Denk, Bora-Hansgrohe Team Manager, regarding the selection of their riders for the 2022 Tour de France: "Over the past couple of years, we’ve had three top-ten results in the Tour and now we’re aiming for a podium. Of course, it’s a tough goal but with the performance we’ve seen from Aleksandr Vlasov this season it’s a realistic goal and we have a strong team with full support for him over every terrain. We want to show an active and attacking style of racing, focus on the GC and maybe even take a stage win. I’d be very happy on the Champs-Élysées if we achieve these goals."

Tour de France 2024 stage-by-stage guide: Route maps and profiles for all 21 days

The 2024 Tour de France is a truly unique race beginning in Florence and ending – for the first time in its 121-year history – outside Paris .

This year’s Tour will wrap up without the usual procession to the Champs-Elysees, where security resources will be focused on the Paris Olympics starting five days later. Instead, organisers have opted to end the race with an individual time-trial in Nice, adding the possibility of the yellow jersey changing hands on a dramatic final day.

Before that, riders face a typically gruelling challenge, with a hilly start in Italy before crossing to France where a perilous gravel stage awaits in Troyes. Week two leads the peloton south to the Pryenees and the monstrous Col du Tourmalet, before a series of days in the Alps including a particularly brutal stage 19 with a summit finish in Isola.

It all concludes in Nice on Sunday 21 July, where the race winner will be crowned.

Stage 1: Florence to Rimini (hilly, 206km) | Saturday 29 June

The opening stage of the 2024 Tour de France will be a beautiful ride, starting with the Grand Depart on the banks of the Arno river in the centre of Florence before heading through Tuscany to the finish line on Italy’s east coast, on the beachfront of Rimini. The route also takes in San Marino, the Tour’s 13th country. But it will be tough on what is the most hilly first stage in the race’s history with 3,600m of climbing to conquer. It could be a day for Tadej Pogacar to immediately make his mark, or for an outstanding classics rider like Mathieu van der Poel to target, while young puncheurs like Ireland’s Ben Healy and Belgium’s Maxim Van Gils could be outside bets.

Stage 1: Romain Bardet shakes off peloton to finally claim yellow jersey

Stage 2: Cesenatico to Bologna, (hilly, 199km) | Sunday 30 June

The second day throws up a more gentle ride, though it still contains six categorised climbs to test the legs. The purest sprinters will get left behind but the small ascents are unlikely to put off the more hardy fast men, like Wout van Aert , who will like the look of the fast finish in Bologna.

Stage 2: Kevin Vauquelin earns debut win as Tadej Pogacar assumes yellow

Stage 3: Plaisance to Turin (flat, 231km) | Monday 1 July

The long third stage will be the first opportunity for a bunch sprint to the finish line. Expect Alpecin-Deceuninck to try and control the final kilometres in an effort to position Jasper Philipsen for the win, but there is a stacked list of sprinters ready to challenge him including Arnaud de Lie, Dylan Groenewegen, Sam Bennett, Wout van Aert and Mark Cavendish, chasing a record 35th stage win to finally eclipse the great Eddy Merckx.

Stage 3: Biniam Girmay makes history as first black African to win a Tour stage

Stage 4: Pinerolo to Valloire (mountainous, 140km) | Tuesday 2 July

A tough fourth stage takes the riders into France via a couple of testing category-two climbs and to the foot of the Col du Galibier – the first hors categorie ascent of the race. The gradient averages only 5.3% but at 23km long, it is a draining slog of a climb to the top and the strongest climbers will come to the fore. Expect some attacks among the big hitters like Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard as we get our first real sense of the battle for overall victory.

Stage 4: Tadej Pogacar makes statement with dominant win to regain yellow

Stage 5: Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne to Saint-Vulbas (flat, 177km) | Wednesday 3 July

The second sprint finish of this year’s Tour contains some small hills but nothing that should disrupt the power riders from reaching the finish near the front, where they will expect to battle for victory.

Stage 5: Mark Cavendish makes history with record-breaking 35th win

Stage 6: Macon to Dijon (flat, 163km) | Thursday 4 July

An even flatter day looks ripe for a bunch sprint on the streets of Dijon. One small categorised climb early in the stage precedes an intermediate sprint which might be targeted by those hunting the green jersey, and a breakaway will almost certainly then take to the front of the race. But it is likely to be caught by the sprinters’ teams before the finish as the peloton’s power riders fight for the stage win.

Stage 6 guide: Sprinters set to shine in Burgundy wine country

Stage 7: Nuits-Saint-Georges to Gevrey-Chambertin, (ITT, 25km) | Friday 5 July

The first individual time-trial of this year’s Tour de France sweeps through thick forest before opening out into the picturesque vineyards of Burgundy. The only climb is the short Cote de Curtil-Vergy (1.6km at 6.1%), followed by a descent into Gevrey-Chambertin, and here Remco Evenepoel – the reigning time-trial world champion – will plan to take some time from his general classification rivals who are less adept against the clock.

Stage 8: Semur-en-Auxois to Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises (flat, 176km) | Saturday 6 July

It may be officially listed as a flat day, but stage eight contains five categorised climbs and plenty more undulation, along with an uphill drag to the finish which should be enough to shake out some of the pure sprinters from contention. This could be a bunch sprint, a day for the breakaway or even a bold solo attack if the situation presents itself for an opportunist near the front of the race.

Stage 9: Troyes to Troyes (hilly, 199km) | Sunday 7 July

The Tour de France takes on the gravel roads of the Champagne region to see out the first week, and the white dusty terrain could take down a few unfortunate victims. The 14 sections of gravel span 32km in all, and they are similar to the roads of the iconic Italian race, Strade-Bianche. The past winners of Strade-Bianche – Tom Pidcock, Mathieu van der Poel, Wout van Aert and Tadej Pogacar – will fancy their chances here.

Rest day: Orleans | Monday 8 July

Stage 10: Orleans to Saint-Amand-Montrond (flat, 187km) | Tuesday 9 July

The Tour heads down to the centre of France, where on paper it is a nice-looking day for the sprinters, but they will need to stay alert to winds which could split the pack along this twisting route south to Saint-Amand-Montrond in the Loire Valley. A short, sharp climb 8km from the finish could be the launchpad for a brave attack, though the muscle men of the peloton will hope to fight it out against each other at the finish in Saint-Amand-Montrond.

Stage 11: Evaux-les-Bains to Le Lioran, (mountainous, 211km) | Wednesday 10 July

Six categorised climbs pepper a hard up-and-down day through the Massif Central. The third-from-last ascent is the toughest, the Puy Mary Pas de Peyrol (5.4km at 8.1%), with a painfully steep final 2km to conquer, and strong climbing legs will be needed to win the stage. A good day for a breakaway to escape and potentially stay away to the end.

Stage 12: Aurillac to Villeneuve-sur-Lot, (flat, 204km) | Thursday 11 July

The ‘flat’ categorisation disguises the numerous small hills dotted through this picturesque route to Villeneuve which will drain legs if the pace is high. Expect a determined breakaway to make it difficult for those teams hoping to set up a bunch sprint at the finish – twice before, the day has been won by a rider in the breakaway here.

Stage 13: Agen to Pau, (flat, 165km) | Friday 12 July

Pau is a staple of the Tour de France over the years, acting as the gateway to the Pyrenees mountains. The hilly finish to the stage might slow down some of the pure sprinters but they will be determined to reel in a breakaway – especially if they failed to do so a day earlier, and with so much hard climbing to come.

Stage 14: Pau to Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, (mountainous, 152km) | Saturday 13 July

The iconic Col du Tourmalet stands in the middle of this mountain stage, with the road peaking at 2,115m above sea level. The 19km climb averages 7.4% gradient and once it’s conquered, two more big climbs await including a summit finish at Pla d’Adet. The GC contenders will surely trade blows on this brutal day.

Stage 15: Loudenvielle to Plateau de Beille (mountainous, 198km) | Sunday 14 July

A nice relaxing weekend in the Pyrenees is rounded off with five climbs over a 200km route, all rated category one or harder. Expect fireworks among the yellow jersey contenders as they race to the finish atop Plateau de Beille.

Rest day: Gruissan | Monday 15 July

Stage 16: Gruissan to Nimes (flat, 189km) | Tuesday 16 July

This is the final chance for the sprinters to bag a stage before the road kicks up into the mountains once more. Those in contention for the win will need to keep their composure as roundabouts punctuate the long final strip into the line in Nimes.

Stage 17: Saint-Paul-Trois-Chateaux to Superdevoluy (mountainous, 178km) | Wednesday 17 July

The peloton reaches the Alps for a day that will be draining as the road tilts from the start. There are bonus seconds to be collected at the top of the category-one Col du Noyer, before a fast descent to a small summit finish which caps a tough second half to this stage.

Stage 18: Gap to Barcelonnette (hilly, 180km) | Thursday 18 July

A breakaway will certainly have a go at escaping up the road to clinch this stage, and they should be able to make it stick. The five official climbs are all category-three ascents which might mean some of the well-rounded sprinters, like Wout van Aert, can clamber over them and be a threat at the finish.

Stage 19: Embrun to Isola 2000 (mountainous, 145km) | Friday 19 July

Perhaps the most eye-catching stage when the 2014 route was unveiled was this one: three monstrous Alpine climbs, back to back, with a summit finish at Isola. The middle climb of the trio is the giant Cime de la Bonette (22.9km at 6.9%), the highest road in France at 2,802m. If the fight for the yellow jersey is still alive at this point in the race, this will be a thrilling stage for the story to unfold.

Stage 20: Nice to Col de la Couillole (mountainous, 133km) | Saturday 20 July

It may be a little shorter at only 133km, but this is another brutally tough mountain stage featuring four climbs and another summit finish, atop the Col de la Couillole, and it is another day when the yellow jersey could be won or lost.

Stage 21: Monaco to Nice (ITT, 34km) | Sunday 21 July

The race will finish without the usual procession through Paris and instead see the riders contest an individual time-trial from Monaco to Nice that could decide the outcome of the Tour. The last time-trial finale saw Greg Lemond pinch the yellow jersey on the Champs-Elysees, beating Laurent Fignon by eight seconds. This route is longer than the stage-seven time-trial, and a little more hilly too, so there is potential for some significant time gaps.

Tour de France 2024 stage 4 preview: Map and profile of 140km route as GC riders battle on Col du Galibier

A fter the thrills and spills of the first two days came a more sedate stage three, as the peloton decided to ease off on the attacks and a breakaway failed to emerge. Instead the sprinters gathered themselves for a fight to the line in Turin, where Biniam Girmay produced a stunning kick to become the first black African to win a Tour de France stage.

They took it easy partly with today’s stage in mind: the race finally leaves Italy (which has made for an even better starting destination than organisers could have hoped) and enters France, via a brutally hard day’s climbing on the first mountain stage of the 2024 Tour.

Tracking uphill from the very start, the peloton will snake west from Pinerolo along the relentlessly long Sestrieres climb (39.9km at 3.7%) and plenty of riders will already find themselves dropped by the top. Then they will cross the border into France on the way up the Col de Montgenevre (8.3km at 5.9%), another testing ascent.

After a quick descent comes the monstrous Col du Galibier, the first hors categorie climb of the race. The first rider over the top will win this year’s Souvenir Henri Desgrange for clearing the highest point of the Tour (2,642m), and more importantly there are bonus seconds of eight, five and two for the first three at the summit. From there, the riders will rush down to the stage finish at Valloire.

Pogacar’s UAE Emirates will be determined to win back the yellow jersey, now worn by Richard Carapaz, which will require a close eye on any breakaway that forms early in the day. The Galibier will whittle out anyone who isn’t feeling fresh and only the strongest climbers will be left in a small group at the front by the end of the climb. That group may be only two riders as Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard go to war in a duel that will reveal the first real clues about who might win the maillot jaune in Nice.

Whatever happens, it is bound to be an absorbing, action-packed stage.

The stage is set to begin at 12.15am BST, and is expected to conclude at around 4pm . Find out how to watch on TV here .

Everything is set up for Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard to duel near the top of the Galibier, and if they do, few will be able to live with them. And if Vingegaard can stick on Pogacar’s back wheel, he has the slightly superior descending skills to out-do his rival and win the race to the line in Valloire.

Tour de France 2023: Bike Computers and Power Meters

gps tour de francia

The Tour de France kicked off again today, this time in Bilbao, Spain, with 176 riders and 22 teams. And thus begins the annual tradition to ferret out not just the sports tech gear these teams are sponsored to use, but the gear they’re actually using. And there’s some interesting tidbits this year!

First up, best I can tell this is the first year that SRM is not sponsoring a TdF team. Obviously, as always, sponsorship doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, but in the case of SRM specifically, I think this marks the end of an era. While one unsponsored power meter team did have a handful of SRM units on-hand, they also had a collection of single and dual-sided Stages units.

Meanwhile, on the bike computer front, we see more of the same from last year. There aren’t any major shifts, with the camp split roughly evenly between Garmin and Wahoo sponsorship fronts, along with Hammerhead and Bryton each sponsoring a team. Giant/Stages has left that scene from the one sponsorship last year. Still, it was notable to see how many teams had the just-released Garmin Edge 840 units on-bike. Typically teams don’t tend to put brand new tech on bikes this quickly, but they were today. In fact, I even saw Team Jayco carrying around a Garmin Edge 840 box to the starting area, with less than 30 minutes to the start of the stage. Unclear what the final destination of that was, but, I found it notable.

I’ll be adding the full galleries of everything here this evening, but you can find all the same goodness up above in the video, and of course the details down below. First up, the power meters:

UCI WorldTour Teams: AG2R Citroën Team: Power2Max Alpecin–Deceuninck: Shimano R9200P Arkéa–Samsic: Shimano R9200P Astana Qazaqstan Team: Shimano R9200P Bora–Hansgrohe: Shimano R9200P Cofidis: SRM & Stages EF Education–EasyPost: Power2Max Groupama–FDJ: Shimano R9200P Ineos Grenadiers: Shimano R9200P Intermarché–Circus–Wanty: ROTOR Inspider Lidl–Trek: SRAM Quarq/AXS Movistar Team: SRAM Quarq/AXS Soudal–Quick-Step: Shimano R9200P Team Bahrain Victorious: Shimano R9200P Team DSM–Firmenich: Shimano R9200P Team Jayco–Alula: Shimano R9200P Team Jumbo–Visma: SRAM Quarq/AXS UAE Team Emirates: Shimano R9200P UCI ProTeams: Israel–Premier Tech: FSA PowerBox (P2M) Lotto–Dstny : 4iiii & Shimano R9200P Team TotalEnergies: Shimano R9200P Uno-X Pro Cycling Team: Shimano R9100P

For those trying to keep score at home, here’s how things landed:

Shimano Teams: 14 (10 sponsored + 4 free-styling) SRAM Teams: 3 (All sponsored) Power2Max Teams: 3 (All sponsored, including via FSA) 4iiii Teams: 1 (Sponsored) ROTOR Teams: 1 (Sponsored) SRM Teams: 1 (Unsponsored portion of team) Stages Teams: 1 (Unsponsored portion of team)

Next up, we’ve got the bike computer front, where things are a bit messier. Actually, they’re both cleaner and messier. As a rule, all Wahoo teams can use either the BOLT V2 or ROAM V2, per rider preference. Thus, for all the teams I saw, it was a mishmash of the Wahoo units within the team – perhaps just barely favoring the BOLT V2.

Meanwhile, on the Garmin side, it’s basically the same story. The Garmin sponsored teams have access to whatever units they want, and in most cases that means riders choose what they want. It tended to be a blend of Garmin Edge 1040, Edge 840, and Edge 830. In non-sponsored teams (like Team Bahrain), you saw some flyers, such as the Garmin Edge 130.  Undoubtedly, because bike computers are usually held by the rider till the last minute (inside the team busses), it’s hard to capture all 176 riders within the very short handful of minutes they ride by. Thus, it’s plausible some Garmin-sponsored rider is also doing something quirky too.

In any case, here we are:

UCI WorldTour Teams: AG2R Citroën Team: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Alpecin–Deceuninck: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Arkéa–Samsic: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Astana Qazaqstan Team: Garmin Edge 840/1040 Bora–Hansgrohe: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Cofidis: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 EF Education–EasyPost: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Groupama–FDJ: Garmin Edge 830 Ineos Grenadiers: Garmin Edge 840/1040 Intermarché–Circus–Wanty: Bryton GPS Lidl–Trek: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Movistar Team: Garmin Edge 840/1040 Soudal–Quick-Step: Garmin Edge 830 Team Bahrain Victorious: Garmin Variety Box (Edge 130, 1040, 830) Team DSM–Firmenich: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 Team Jayco–Alula: Garmin Edge 530/1040 Team Jumbo–Visma : Garmin Edge 830/840 UAE Team Emirates: Wahoo ROAM V2/BOLT V2 UCI ProTeams: Israel–Premier Tech: Hammerhead Karoo 2 Lotto–Dstny: Garmin Edge Series Team TotalEnergies: Garmin Edge 830/840/1040 Uno-X Pro Cycling Team: Garmin Edge Series

And like above, here’s where things landed in the totals department:

Garmin Teams : 11 (9 sponsored + 2 free-styling: UAE/Bahrain) Wahoo Teams: 9 (All sponsored) Hammerhead Teams: 1 (Sponsored) Bryton Teams: 1 (Sponsored)

For the Bryton units, I’ll have to get specific models tomorrow at that start. All the Bryton units had special (colorful) covers on them, making it near impossible to get specific exact models because some of the models are virtually identical without seeing the model number. Generally speaking, finding the right person at the team area that actually knows what bike GPS models are is near impossible. There is *someone* that does know that, but historically speaking, finding that exact someone is a literal needle in a haystack. And usually the riders are inside.

In any case, stay tuned for more digging into sports tech from the start of tomorrow’s stage. Or, check out the video above where I see which GoPros the teams and organizers are putting on riders, as well as plenty of other sports tech (and non-tech) tidbits!

First time for you in the Basque Country?

Make sure you enjoy the land.

I think so – super pretty area!

Sad to see no Polar… Even Bryton produces bike computers…

Yeah, I suspect the cost structures of Polar vs Bryton are vastly different…

Many ppl using Polar would kill for new cycling computers with navi. Even sigma produces rox with mapping

Polar totally lost that market. So sad. I doubt that we see any new bike computers by Polar.

I use my Vantage V2 as a bike computer (mounted in the handlebar). When I need routing I use a Wahoo Blot (maybe a Roam2 in the future)

I bet the riders with Edge 840s were thrilled to get the Climb Pro fanfare every time they reached the top of a climb!

That’d be amazing to be at the top of a Climb and record the audio.

Even more if they were getting it a couple of minutes after they reached the top, considering the bugs still present in ClimbPro

My understanding of the multi-minute offset though is that’s from Strava Routes (and maybe some Komoot routes), where they’re sending over the elevation wonky.

' src=

Curious that so many teams are rolling with Shimano power meters. Aren’t they notoriously terrible? I’ve seen both you and GPlama tear them apart.

Also, why no pedal power meters?

Yeah – I was wondering this.

Shimano sponsors the team so they use Shimano power meters. I think Ray said during training they may use other power meters. They also probably have a decent idea where the Shimano PMs are deficient and know how to account for it.

Sadly, there’s not much you can do to account for it – mainly because it’s specific to gearing combinations and pedaling style. So, unless you know which gear the rider was in (e.g. which front chainring), it’s incredibly difficult to backwards compute.

Is it likely or possible that shimano teams use a left side PM (eg stages or 4iiii) within the DA crank arm, but without any logos? Then just ignore the notorious shimano one?

Bought a Garmin 840 when it came out, to have one run/bike ecosystem, after owning both iterations of the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. And as much as I like the unit: Man, it makes a lot of noise! The Climb Pro summit fanfare made me turn off all sound…

Somone please record some sound, when the peloton crosses a summit!

Totally agree on the noise of a Garmin head unit. I have an edge 530 and I turned off the sound years ago, the thing just does not shut up!

dcr, are Israël already riding with a Karoo 3?

They’re riding the Karoo 2.

' src=

Given the inaccurate Shimano power meter, do you think those teams use a different PM for training and just ride with these on the bikes in public races?

Yup, they definitely do. Not all of them, and not all riders. But some of them do indeed.

Hero Session 5 for the win! GoPro missed the mark with the “mini”

Ray do you think that these have been supplied/refurbished by GoPro, found in an old storage locker or have just been looked after to stay alive?

I’ll ask around, but I suspect these are largely the same cameras that are carefully looked after, or occasionally re-sourced. I know the GoPro people still know that crew, but I can’t imagine GoPro has many of those cameras lying around.

' src=

Noticed the same aspect that has already been raised by others: many of them are using the Shimano Power Meters, which are known (here) to be very unreliable.

Are they managing to add some additiona source of PM reading, or are they simply ignoring it (or doing the best that they can with those unreliable units), as far as you know?

Thanks for this post. It must have been exciting to be in the middle of all that! Looking a the photo you have of cav, my first question was “what watch is he wearing?”

Wonder if Wood’s actually used the climb feature on the Karoo 2 to win Stage 9 up the Puy de Dôme? Now that would be a great piece of marketing for Hammerhead.

Interesting to hear Victor Campaernants from Lotto Destiny saying that his power meter doesn’t work because of the heat. I’m wondering if it’s the 4iii or Shimano one…

Do you know what camera they use for on bike footage during the race.? Those mounted at some of the rider’s saddle?

Big data comes to the Tour de France

Live GPS tracking and analysis for all riders, plus GoPro cameras on certain bikes

Ben Delaney / Immediate Media

Ben Delaney

gps tour de francia

For the first time in Tour de France history, all riders racing in this year’s event have GPS transponders on their bikes, with the live data streaming to Tour organizers thanks to technology group Dimension Data.

Each rider has a transponder mounted to his saddle rails. This will be used by every rider for every stage of the Tour.

The data collected from this will include:

  • the stage winner’s top speed, average speed and time per kilometer
  • the fastest riders up key climbs
  • the speed of the winner at the finish line
  • the top speed achieved by a rider on the day
  • average speed across all riders

“The technology will allow cycling fans to follow the race in ways they’ve never been able to before,” Dimension Data executive chairman Jeremy Ord said in a press release. “Until now it was difficult to understand what was happening outside of what could be shown on the live television coverage. The ability to follow riders, get accurate information about which riders are in a group, and see real-time speed are just some of the innovations that will be realized through this solution.”

gps tour de francia

Each rider has his own GPS transponder for the Tour

Dimension Data is also offering a Daily Data Wrap analysis package, which you can sign up for here .

Should a rider need to change bikes during a stage, teams are required to notify race officials, as the bikes also have a timing chip on them needed for scorekeeping. In this case, that rider's GPS transponder almost certainly won't be transferred to the space bike as time will be at a premium for the racers. But in between stages when riders change from time trial bikes to their standard race bikes to perhaps an endurance bike for stage four's cobbles, the transponders will go with them.

In related news, GoPro and Tour organizers ASO have partnered this year to deliver GoPro footage from bikes , team cars and more. There will be 12 GoPro Hero4 Black cameras that are used on bikes throughout the race, with each team having at least one rider using one at some point.

gps tour de francia

12 GoPro cameras will be making their rounds on various bikes throughout the race

Last year was the first time ASO allowed videocameras to be used on bikes during the race, and Shimano leapt at the opportunity with its CM-1000 videocamera used on Shimano-sponsored team bikes.

Power meters and computers at the Tour de France: Who's using what?

A roundup of the Tour de France teams' choice of power meters and cycling computers

WorldTour Cycling Computers

"Professional cycling has become a game of numbers, with riders paying such close attention to their power numbers and heart rates that they become obsessed." Those are the words of Vini Zabù-KTM manager Luca Scinto, who banned his team from racing with power meters and heart rate data in January of this year.

Power meters have long been a source of contention in the WorldTour peloton. The conversation has rumbled on in the background of professional racing for many years and has involved names such as Alberto Contador, who suggested the removal of the technology would "even things out" after the Team Sky train tactic was everpresent in the high mountains. Current Tour de France director, Christian Prudhomme, who went so far as to state that power meters "annihilate the glorious uncertainty of sport."

All that aside, power meters are still very much a part of the pro peloton, and yet, the 2019 Tour de France was widely considered as one of the most exciting of all time. The 2020 Tour has seen the return of the 'train' tactic, with Ineos Grenadiers being beaten at their own game by Jumbo Visma, but the race is still as explosive as ever, and power meters are benefitting more than just the riders on the road. Thanks to riders sharing their data on Strava, we can marvel at the massive numbers just like we did with Pogacar's power on the Peyresourde .

Over recent years, power meters have improved drastically. Paired with cycling computers, power data is available instantaneously, allowing riders to see their effort in real-time and calculate their race accordingly to ensure they don't go too deep too early.

  • Want to capture your data? Check out our guide to the best power meters
  • Our guide to the best cycling computers will help you choose which is right for you
  • Choosing the best heart rate monitors will provide a more rounded picture of your effort

Cycling computers can do considerably more than just capture this data, too. The best options can do everything from GPS maps to show the road ahead on a fast descent, provide overviews of upcoming climbs to help riders see how much further to the top, and display kilojoules expended to help a rider fuel accordingly. They say knowledge is power, and it's a safe assumption that there would be a considerable advantage to a team with a better cycling computer.

We've already done the Tour de France helmets and Tour de France shoes , so without further ado, let's take a deep dive into which team is using which power meter, who has which cycling computer, and most importantly, where can you buy one so that you too can be as fast as Primoz Roglic… wait, no that's not how it works, sorry.

Garmin Edge 530 Review

 Garmin

  • Used by: Astana Pro Team, Bahrain-McLaren, CCC Team, EF Pro Cycling, Groupama-FDJ, Mitchelton-Scott, Movistar Team, NTT Pro Cycling, Ineos Grenadiers, Team Jumbo-Visma, Trek-Segafredo, Total Direct Energie

Garmin is well and truly on its way to a monopoly of the Tour de France peloton, with more than half of the race using Garmin computers for data collection. The range includes a number of models of different sizes, weights and feature lists. Some riders prefer the large screen of the Edge 1030 Plus, while riders such as George Bennett prefer the low weight offered by the minuscule 130. Between these, most riders have opted for the feature-rich, smaller-profile Edge 530 and touch screen 830.

Wahoo Elemnt Roam

 Wahoo

  • Used by: AG2R La Mondiale, BORA-Hansgrohe, Deceuninck-QuickStep, Team Arkéa Samsic

The challenger to the market leader in the cycling computer world is Wahoo, and in terms of Tour de France representation, it can be found on the bikes of four teams, however, you'll also find its turbo trainers outside the Ineos Grenadiers' bus. Teams have a choice of two computers, the newer Elemnt Roam, and the smaller-form-factor Elemnt Bolt.

A nifty advantage to Wahoo teams is that the Elemnt computers can be screwed into the mount, which officially makes it a permanent fixture, and thus, counts within the 6.8kg weight limit.

 SRM

  • Used by: Cofidis-Solutions Crédits, Lotto-Soudal

Way back in January, both of Cofidis' Nathan Haas and Lotto-Soudal's Adam Hansen gave us a sneak peek into the pro peloton's data screens . Both use SRM computers, and both spoke about the benefit of using the kilojoule feature to ensure they know how hard the day has been so they could fuel accordingly.

The SRM might be the authority in the power measurement game, but its PC8 computer foregoes mapping, so riders might well be at a disadvantage when it comes to descending in unfamiliar territory.

Tour de France tech

  • Used by: Israel Start-Up Nation, B&B Hotels - Vital Concept p/b KTM

We also got a similar look at Alex Dowsett's Bryton computer , who spoke about the benefit of map screens, enabling him a bird's eye view of corners, so he knows whether to scrub off speed or send it.

Stages only has its technology aboard one team's bikes in the Tour de France, but it's chosen well, with the Colnago bikes of UAE Team Emirates. They have the choice of the Dash L50 and the slightly smaller Dash M50.

When it comes to descending, few have impressed more at this year's Tour than Team Sunweb's Marc Hirschi. The large screen and clear of the Sigma Rox 12.0 will have likely assisted him along the way.

Just like its domination in the groupset stakes (used by 14 out of the 19 WorldTour teams), Shimano also dominates the power meter representation on WorldTour bikes , and at the Tour de France, 13 of the 22 teams are using Shimano's R9100-P power meter crankset, which measures left and right leg power independently for even more granular data.

For more information, here are all of the Shimano road groupsets explained .

Along with the SRM PC8 computers, the same two teams use the SRM power meters paired with Campagnolo groupsets. SRM invented the cycling power meter in the late '80s, and has long been considered the authority on the subject. The SRM power meter used by these two teams claims an accuracy of within one per cent.

Tour de France tech

  • Used by: Movistar Team, Trek-Segafredo

A subsidiary of groupset giant SRAM, Quarq offers power measurement built into the SRAM Red crankset used by both teams. The strange thing about these power meters is that they're fixed to the crank's chainrings, so when you eventually wear those out, you'll need to buy a new power meter. Not a concern to these guys who are, coincidentally, using chainrings that are actually unavailable to the public.

Paired with their Stages Dash computers, UAE Team Emirates are also using Stages power meters, which essentially integrate the strain gauge into a matching crank for your groupset of choice… in this case, Campagnolo's Super Record.

Tour de France tech

  • Used by: AG2R La Mondiale

Despite using Shimano's groupset, AG2R La Mondiale use cranks from Rotor, and with it, the same company's '2in1Power' power meter.

4iiii promises "WorldTour quality at industry leading prices", and it operates in a similar way to Stages in that its technology is affixed to cranks from groupset manufacturers. In this instance, it's the Dura-Ace crank, fitted with the Precision Pro power meter.

Each pedal stroke becomes a metaphor for life’s challenges, with the road ahead symbolising the unpredictable twists and turns that one must navigate. The adrenaline rushing through, a scenery nothing short of breathtaking and a profound exploration of human potential. The Tour de France returns this year from 29th June until 21st July for another thrilling and challenging race pushing riders to their limits. A journey of self-discovery and resilience, where riders delve into the depth of their mental and physical abilities. Today, we follow lifelong fans of the race, Canadians Casey and Debra Edge on their honeymoon cycling tour during the 2023 Tour de France just hours ahead of the peloton. A behind-the-scenes of the most talked about 3500 km cycling race in the world!

Welcome to the City of Love

To start off their epic journey, the couple decided to spend a few days in Paris before heading down to meet the tour in Bordeaux. Its charming terraces where people-watching becomes a slow and immersive pastime, romantic atmosphere, cultural richness, culinary delights all while discovering its authentic, vibrant energy and witnessing the beauty of its everyday life; Paris offers a perfect blend of romance, a perfect start to their honeymoon and their cycling journey in the sun-kissed south of France.

“After walking around the Eiffel Tower, we walked along the Seine past the Flamme de la Liberté and the Jardin des Tuileries to the Louvre,” said Debra.

Train with Sunflowers

The rich and velvety wine city – Bordeaux

At two and a half hours by train from Paris, designed by Gustave Eiffel and known for its beautiful architecture, Bordeaux’s train station is a mix of modern and classic design elements. With its 19th-century stone building, sun beaming through its high ceilings and wide windows illuminating every corner, and the smell of the cannelés (a Bordeaux speciality) lingering in the air, the Gare St Jean perfectly reflects the city’s rich tapestry, blending history and elegance seamlessly.

A great city for a memorable event -

Upon arrival in Bordeaux, Casey and Debra were greeted by the Tour de France festival, hosting a village of free events for the race on one of the largest city squares in Europe, covering 31 acres around the iconic Monument aux Girondins, a beautiful fountain commemorating the Girondist politicians who were executed during the French Revolution!

After spending their first night in Bordeaux, they met up with ex-Olympian Stuart O’Grady, former Paris – Rouboux winner and 17 times Tour de France contender, at the Mummu Cycling Tour Group for their most anticipated cycling expedition.

After fitting their bikes and preparing for the upcoming week, they made their way to the Izoard finish line hospitality, one of the best viewing spots of the finish line.

Sprint race Bordeaux

“The Tour de France is something we saw for years on television, so we were thrilled to be part of the crowd wearing our yellow Tour de France caps and shirts, purchased the day before at the Tour de France fan park. The excitement of everyone as the peloton drew near (as noted by the TV helicopter approaching above) was amazing. We were right on the barriers as the riders flew past us at speeds of up to 70 km per hour! The hospitality was great – we had refreshments, chairs and umbrellas shielding us from the sun while waiting for the sprint”.

Stage 8 - exploring the surrounding vineyards in Libourne and Saint Emilion

“We rode through the countryside and visited a selection of wineries that have been in the families for generations. It wasn’t just about tasting the wines, they thoroughly explained the entire process including the climate, soil, barrel-making, and cellar tours!” said Casey.

Cycling across Libourne and St Emilion

On day 5 of their trip and Stage 8 of the race, the couple were transferred to the departure village, the Tour de France hospitality in Libourne Saint Caprais.

After embarking on their first cycling trip to the medieval village of Saint Emilion, with its cobblestone streets and potent aroma of the grapes, they wine hopped from two stunning chateaux. These were the family-owned Chateau Laniote originally created by Pierre Lacoste, a Bordeaux negociant, and Chateau Mauvinion which has been in the Tribaudeau family since 1962 and covers 6.5ha of Saint Emilion Grand Cru vines. Certified organic since 2020!

Stage 9 – Pontamur & Clermont Ferrand

The scent of freshly baked croissants mingling with freshly brewed coffee, the taste of creamy French butter melting on warm baguette… this fuelled both body and soul before the couple’s four-hour transfer to Pontamur where they cycled up to Clermont Ferrand.

“We don’t do a lot of climbing in Victoria (British Columbia), so the ride was a challenge initially. But the Factor bikes we got were excellent. We received great encouragement from all the Tour de France fans yelling “allez allez” so we just kept pedalling…”.

Supporters

“… we also learned a lot in terms of taking fluids, electrolytes, carbs and protein bars for the rest of the trip,” said Casey.

With each turn of the pedal, surrounded with centuries-old chateaux and churches standing still witnessing the journey, the scent of blooming flowers and fresh grass mingling with the earthy aroma of the forests, they cycled all the way to the volcanic gem that is Clermont-Ferrand. A city rich in history with a vibrant culture bubbling beneath the surface. As they approached the city, the majestic silhouette of the Puy de Dome loomed in the distance with its towering peak.

Casey & Debra

After the 11km climb around Clermont Ferrand, the group met British ITV and NBC commentator Phil Liggett at his hotel.

“It was a thrill meeting NBC’s Phil Liggett. He has been the television’s voice of cycling in North America for 51 years, and he had great stories to tell about the many tours and riders. He chatted with us for over an hour and shared his 2023 race which was his 51st Tour de France.

“Our 11 km climb that day was part of a longer ride and the inspiration for Casey’s song ‘Allez Allez (Is What They Say),’ which can be heard on Spotify. It was a very long climb and as mentioned in my song dedicated to our trip, “I could not see the forest for the trees” and I was “searching for the peak up in the sky”.

“A memory to last a lifetime,” said Casey.

As the French would say, “après l’effort le reconfort” at Brasserie Madeleine with 17-time Tour de France rider Stuart O’Grady. A special place to go if you want to taste the perfectly cooked choucroute, fillet steak and pies!

The Cave des Beaux Arts – Clermont Ferrand

Enveloped in the vibrant energy of Clermont Ferrand, where over 400,000 tourists flock each year, lies the Cave des Beaux Arts, a sanctuary for wine enthusiasts seeking to delve into the essence of French gastronomy. Here, under the guidance of the passionate oenologist Philippe Gallon, guests are treated to a sensory journey like no other. Philippe Gallon, a true maestro of wine, curates an experience that transcends mere tasting; a symphony of flavours that dances on the palate and ignites the soul. As a cellarer for independent winegrowers, he unveils the secrets of terroirs, showcasing the essence of each vineyard with reverence and respect. Through his dedication to environmentally friendly viticulture, he not only preserves the land but also nurtures a deeper connection between nature and the art of winemaking. In the heart of this intimate setting, surrounded by the whispers of history and the aroma of aged barrels, guests are invited to savour not just wine but a story—a tale of passion, tradition, and the boundless beauty of French wine culture. The Cave des Beaux Arts is not just a place; it is an experience that lingers in the heart long after the last drop has been savoured.

“Cave des Beaux Arts has a wonderful selection of wine, cheese, and speciality foods. They provided a taste test to distinguish the different bouquets and flavours, from floral to fruit to leather. Wonderful hospitality,” said Debra.

The Relais Etape

Highlighted by the passing of the caravan, riders, and entertainment all day long, and whether you're a Tour de France fan or not, the Relais Etape is a real generator of good vibes and smiles.

Relais Etape

On 11th July, going east, at just under an hour from Clermont Ferrand, Debra and Casey rode from Mont Dore past Bessie en-Saint-Anastaise for the Relais Etape. A 30 km ride passing through the Chaudefour Valley Nature Reserve.

If you decided to cycle down there, you may come across the Cabane aux Miroirs, which stands as a tribute to a bygone era in a valley of pasture and to the people who once thrived in the buron de Venzoux nearby. These stone structures, used by herders and hikers, provided shelter and reflected life like mirrors. While the pastoral tradition has faded, the buron de Venzoux remains a fragile reminder of a cherished history. The Cabane aux Miroirs symbolises the endangered mountain heritage, blending seamlessly with the landscape. Covered in mirrors, it pays homage to a time when humans and nature coexisted harmoniously.

Debra cycling

“The scenery was fabulous with mountains, lakes and polka dot hats and jerseys everywhere. This was a category 2 climb at the Tour de France.”

As the sun dipped low in the sky, a lone rider on an electric bike zipped past, leading the way up the challenging climb. Casey gratefully tucked in behind, feeling the rush of wind and the thrill of the ascent. The descent that followed was a heart-pounding adventure, each twist and turn a dance of speed and skill. Arriving at the Relais Etape tent after the summit, the air was alive with the sounds of a local band playing and the clinking of glasses filled with Bordeaux wine. The aroma of rich cheese wafted through the air, inviting Debra and Casey to indulge in the simple pleasures of good food and good company. “As the lead riders and peloton whizzed by, their support vehicles in tow, we couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the dedication and passion of these athletes. It was a moment to savour, a snapshot of camaraderie and competition that would stay with us long after the race had ended.”

Relais Etape

A final stop in the city of Lyon

A symphony of flavours and tapestry woven with threads of history, culture, and passion nestled between the rivers Rhone and Saone, Lyon pulsates to a rhythm of its own – a rhythm that resonates through its cobblestone streets and ancient alleyways. Lyon offers a diverse and vibrant nightlife scene, with each district showcasing its own unique atmosphere. From British pubs in Vieux-Lyon to trendy cocktail bars in Place des Terreaux, there is something for everyone. The river boats along the Rhône provide a lively setting during the summer months, while the Brotteaux district attracts a trendy crowd. For live entertainment, Lyon's cultural scene is thriving with the Opéra de Lyon, Auditorium, Maison de la Danse, and Théâtre des Célestins offering a variety of performances throughout the year.

A city where time seems to stand still and yet rush by in a whirlwind of sights and sounds. A paradox, a juxtaposition of old and new, tradition and innovation. Lyon embodies the spirit of rebirth and reinvention, constantly evolving while staying true to its roots.

A Transformative Journey

Attending the Tour de France is an experience like no other. The adrenaline rush, breathtaking scenery, and exploration of human potential make it a truly unforgettable event. From the romantic atmosphere of Paris to the rich wine city of Bordeaux, every moment is filled with cultural richness and vibrant energy. Exploring the surrounding vineyards and medieval villages, tasting the wines, and meeting cycling legends like Stuart O'Grady added layers of excitement to the journey.

The city of Clermont-Ferrand, with its rich history and vibrant culture, offered a unique backdrop for the race. And the Cave des Beaux Arts provided a sensory journey into the essence of French gastronomy. The Relais Etape, with its good vibes and smiles, offers a chance to witness the dedication and passion of the athletes up close.

Attending the Tour de France is not just a trip, but a transformative experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

Lo que debes saber sobre el Tour de Francia 2024 (que inicia en Italia)

Dos ganadores anteriores son los principales aspirantes para ganar la carrera más famosa del ciclismo, que, en una peculiaridad de este año, no termina en París.

A large pack of bicycle riders heads forward with large crowds watching from both sides.

[Estamos en WhatsApp. Empieza a seguirnos ahora ]

  • Alpecin-Deceuninck : Wahoo
  • Bahrain Victorious : Garmin
  • Astana Qazaqstan : Garmin
  • BORA-hansgrohe : Wahoo
  • Cofidis : Wahoo
  • EF Education-EasyPost : Wahoo
  • Groupama-FDJ : Garmin
  • INEOS Grenadiers : Garmin
  • Intermarché-Circus-Wanty : Bryton
  • Jumbo–Visma : Garmin
  • Lidl-Trek : Wahoo
  • Movistar : Garmin
  • Soudal Quick-Step : Garmin
  • Team Arkéa-Samsic : Wahoo
  • Team dsm-firmenich : Wahoo
  • Team Jayco-Alula : Garmin
  • UAE Team Emirates : Wahoo
