On some Islands Holiday Packages (e.g. Fiji), it is practical to include flights, so where we have done this it is indicated by the plane icon.

However, on the majority of our Holiday Packages, we do not include international flights.

We found that many customers may prefer to:

  • Travel on a specific airline of their choice
  • Have the flexibility to book flights with Frequent Flyer points
  • Select flight dates that may be different to our Holiday Package start/end dates
  • Use a Travel Credit already held with the airline
  • Use their travel agent for this service

We are able to assist with flights on any Holiday Package, so please just notify us during the Book Now process or contact our team.

Should I take travel insurance?

Travel insurance is strongly recommended. During the Book Now process please confirm you require assistance, and our team will be in contact with you.

What should I do before travelling?

Before you travel it is your responsibility to ensure you have the appropriate documentation including visas. If you are travelling on a passport other than Australian or New Zealand, you will require a permit to re-enter Australia. It is your responsibility as the traveller and/or travel booker to meet all government entry requirements.

Gornergrat Bahn auf der Strecke bei Rotenboden im Sommer

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland

MAKING TRACKS: A Grand Tour Of Swiss Trains

MAKING TRACKS: A Grand Tour Of Swiss Trains

Most viewed

Karryon's top 10 stories of the week: catch up on our most-wanted: may 31, msc sends nine ships to the med to meet growing demand, flight centre plugs into ai-powered feedback insights to understand entire customer experience, if you’re wondering the best possible way to see the most of switzerland, then look no further. the swiss train systems provide the ultimate immersion into the spectacular landscape, culture, and history of this beautiful country..

There are several train routes in Switzerland but picking just one is a difficult choice and can make you panic that you might not be getting ‘the full experience’.

To make sure you not only get on the ‘right track’, but ALL of them, why not opt instead for the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland , covering eight impressive routes?

The Swiss Travel Pass offers anything from three to 15 days of unlimited train travel. It also gets you free boat rides and public transport, as well as into 500 museums and on four mountain excursions. What’s not to love?

If you’re curious to learn more about these impressive routes, we’ve got you covered.

Check out our intel on routes through Lucerne, Montreux, Zermatt, St Moritz, and on to Italy….

GOLDEN PASS

Karryon_680_400_GoldenPass_ST0006774

The Golden Pass is a connect-the-dots journey for the German- and French-speaking regions to help you understand Swiss culture like a champ. The full pass is a 3-train trip that commences in Lucerne or Montreux and passes through the ski Mecca, Gstaad. It’s 5-hours of eye-boggling vistas including lush snow-capped mountains, sparkling alpine lakes, and fairytale villages straight off a postcard.

If you only have limited time, don’t miss the MOB Panorama section of this route, from Zweisimmin to Montreux. The custom-designed carriage offers the sensation of being at one with the environment, especially if you upgrade to VIP seating.

THE GLACIER EXPRESS

karryon_glacier express

The most well known of the Swiss Travel Pass routes, the Glacier Express is the world’s slowest ‘express’ train. Over eight hours, you’ll traverse close to 300 bridges, nearly 100 bridges, plus spy remarkable glaciers, lakes, and villages. While not quite Switzerland’s highest point, glimpsing the iconic Matterhorn crest is a highpoint on this route.

Don’t miss out on the new Glacier Express Excellence Class. Recently launched, the upgrade gets you guaranteed window seats, guides, champers, and a 5-course feast.

BERNINA EXPRESS

karryon_Bernina Express

Hop aboard the Bernina Express for an adventure over the Alps to Italy. The varied scenery traverses you from the glaciers of St Moritz to the palm trees of Tirano. It’s like the best 4-hour geography lesson you’ve ever had.

In summer, seats in the bonus open-air Cabrio coach infuse Alpine aromas to accompany the Bernina Express’s astonishing sights. Most fascinating on this route is the engineering feat (and UNESCO World Heritage site) of the Rhaetian Railway.

GOTTHARD PANORAMA EXPRESS

karryon_Gotthard Panorama Express

Although off the circuit of the three other routes listed, it’s worth considering time on Switzerland’s most historic rail journey. The Gotthard Panorama Express even includes a segment by steamboat for a total throwback. From Lucerne to Lugano, the route passes the manmade marvel of the 1882 Gotthard Tunnel. You’ll also spy the historic buildings of the baroque Wassen Church, William Tell’s Chapel, and Chapel Bridge, built in 1333.

Train tip: if you’re travelling in Switzerland from May to September, reservations, though not required, are recommended, particularly for window seats.

Pontresina sits on a high sunny ledge with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. It has one long street, its business street, with only a few side streets and a lower loop. The upper end of the main street, Maistre, is the oldest part of the village with older buildings. See the Hotel Steinbock and the homes around it. A REALLY old church, Santa Maria, has lovely frescoes. Check when it opens. Look for the Sgrafitto on the buildings. You will need a minimum of an hour.

You can take either a bus or train to get to the base station for the Muottas Murago funicular station. It's too far to walk. But you do not say when you visit. It starts running 8 June.

https://www.engadin.ch/en/summer-tariffs-muottas-muragl-and-languard/

Make time for a stop at the Kochendorfer Bakery inside the Albris Hotel across from the Hotel Steinbock. It's one of the best bakeries in the area.,

https://www.engadin.ch/en/shopping/baeckerei-konditorei-kochendoerfer/

Thank you so much for this information. We are planning to be in Pontresina on June 13, so glad to know the funicular will be open by then! Do you think 3 to 4 hours will be sufficient time to enjoy these activities?

I would take the bus #1 or #2 from the main street to the base station of the Muottas Murago funicular. Check the summer timetable. The bus lets you off at a gas station that is almost next to the base station. The train stops at a platform that is somewhat downhill and requires a walk up to the station. The funicular ascends/descends every 30 minutes. Do have a coffee on the deck of the Muottas Muragl Hotel and admire the view. You could probably do everything in 3/4 hours if you are careful with your timing. But whether the church and the Alpine museum are open is another matter. You really should see the church if it's open as the early frescoes are truly amazing. You could also ride the chairlift up to Alp Languard. Catch it in the middle of town, just off the main street. The views from Alp Languard are wonderful. It opens 8 June as well.

Fantastic! Thank you Terre2014!

There is still a bit of snow at Muottas Muragl, as this webcam shows!

Tips for sustainable travel in Switzerland

1. climate-friendly travelling.

Travel by public transport such as trains, buses and boats. Switzerland has the densest transport network in the world. You can reach any destination easily and conveniently by public transport. This not only reduces your ecological footprint, but also allows you to enjoy the scenic beauty of Switzerland while you are travelling. Find out more about sustainable mobility in Switzerland.

2. Save energy and resources

Observe energy and water-saving measures in your accommodation, such as switching off lights and electronic devices when not in use and limiting the washing of towels and bed linen.

3. Support local products and businesses

Choose accommodation, restaurants and shops that use local produce and are run by local businesses. This supports the local economy and helps to minimise the environmental impact of transporting products.

4. Respect nature

Make sure you respect the environment while travelling by disposing of rubbish properly, staying on hiking trails and protecting sensitive ecosystems such as mountain lakes and forests. Take nothing but photos and memories with you and leave nothing but footprints. Here you will find an overview of how recycling works in Switzerland (in German only).

5. Hiking and cycling

Explore Switzerland in a sustainable way by using hiking and cycling as a means of transport. There are numerous well-marked hiking and cycling trails that take you through breathtaking landscapes while protecting the environment.

6. Reduce plastic consumption

Avoid buying single-use plastic products such as water bottles and use reusable drinking bottles made from materials such as glass or stainless steel instead. Also carry a reusable shopping bag with you to avoid plastic bags.

9 Christmas Markets along the Grand Train Tour It’s back – the most beautiful time of the year: snow-clad hills, frozen lakes and festively lit Christmas markets. Many of them are located right next to or directly in railway stations: perfect companions of public transport.

Zurich the most elegant of christmas trees.

21 Nov – 24 Dec 2019

No fewer than 7,000 Swarovski crystals adorn the 15-metre high Christmas tree in the great hall of Zurich main station. Surrounded by 150 market stalls, it is a striking highlight. The Christmas experience starts right at arrival: The moment visitors step off the train they are greeted by the sweet fragrance of spiced hot wine punch and cinnamon. The perfect start for travellers of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland.

Lucerne Glamorous Advent wreath with meter-high candles

05 – 22 Dec 2019

Every year, Lucerne welcomes the return of its "Lozärner Weihnachtsmärt" Christmas market on Franziskanerplatz. Its canopy of twinkling Christmas stars and the fragrance of gingerbread and spices, punch and mulled wine attract all ages to its stalls. On top of the Franciscan Well at the centre of the square the signature feature of the market is glowing: a huge Advent wreath, adorned with hundreds of lights and baubles and four metre-high candles. And there’s a very special service: at the wrapping booth you can have your shopping items gift-wrapped and turned into beautiful presents – for free!

Interlaken The most heavenly Christmas experience.

14 – 22 Dec 2019

Along the GoldenPass Line from Lucerne to Montreux, a stop over in Interlaken is well worth it. A truly heavenly Christmas experience awaits those who wish to enjoy the time before Christmas with all their senses. The visit to the Christmas market can be combined not only with Christmas shopping but also with ice-skating on the “Top of Europe Ice Magic Interlaken” ice rink – where fun for young and old is guaranteed!

Montreux Plenty of glamour and flying lights.

At Zweisimmen, the GoldenPass Panoramic or Belle Époque starts in the direction of the French-speaking Swiss region. Shortly before arriving at its destination, a fantastic view onto glistening Lake Geneva unfolds. And for those who look closely, the lights of Montreux’s most beautiful Christmas market are already visible. Only a few walking minutes from the station, the market impresses visitors with a glamorous 3D light show illuminating the entire façade of the Fairmont Le Montreux palace. Its location near the lake lends a very special, warm and festive atmosphere to the market. Each year, countless “flying lights” float on the lake. This one is not to be missed – whether from the lake promenade or by boat.

Zermatt Charm around the Matterhorn.

01 Dec 2019: Christmas tree inauguration 12 Dec 2019: Façade lighting of Hotel Mont Cervin Palace

Leaving Montreux, the train passes by Martigny as well as the famous Stocker Palace in the Rhonetal Valley and drives through Switzerland’s deepest-incised valley, the Nicolaital Valley. After a train ride of roughly two-and-a-half hours, the passengers of the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland arrive in fashionable Zermatt. Countless lights turn the station square into a festive colour spectacle and make for a warm welcome – against the backdrop of the world famous Matterhorn, which is visible from every point in the village.

St. Moritz In style: Christmas mood and winter ambiance.

04 Dec 2019

The Glacier Express, the slowest express train in the world, takes passengers across the Oberalp Pass towards the Engadine. In the glittering village centre of St. Moritz, the “Delightful Christmas Market” offers cheerful Christmas mood and winter ambiance. Local producers place great value on the highest quality and an appealing range of products. Also, a Christmas stroll along the decorated shopping mile is certainly a must.

Lugano Mulled wine and other delicacies.

30 Nov 2019 – 06 Jan 2020

During the winter months, the journey continues on the Palm Express. The PostBus ride is rich in contrasts and leads from St. Moritz down the Bregaglia Valley to the urban and cultural centre of Lugano in Ticino. On the Piazza Riforma, not far from the train station, the local residents celebrate the Christmas period. During this time, the city centre turns into a brightly lit village with stalls, musical performances and booths offering delicious spiced hot wine punch. Travellers shouldn’t miss the stop over in the only Italian-speaking city on the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland for the world.

St. Gallen Switzerland’s stellar city.

28 Nov – 24 Dec 2019

The Voralpen-Express takes guests from Lucerne to St. Gallen, a city steeped in tradition. Each Advent, St. Gallen turns into the most atmospheric “Schweizer Sternenstadt” (starry city). No fewer than 700 stars sparkle over the squares and lanes and wrap the historic facades of the UNESCO World Heritage city in festive splendour. The atmosphere in the cheerfully decorated alleys of the old town makes the period before Christmas in St. Gallen a truly special experience.

Schaffhausen Small but excellent.

Schaffhausen.

14 – 15 Dec 2019

The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland continues along the Rhine back to Zurich. A stop over in Schaffhausen counts as a must. The traditional Christmas market is located in and around the over 800-year-old cloister of the monastery “zu Allerheiligen” (All Hallows) – only a few walking minutes from the train station Schaffhausen. At this small, exclusive market, a handpicked selection of exhibitors offer products that are all connected to Christmas. Whoever is still looking for Christmas decoration or a suitable present: this is the place to go.
