Buzz building for autumn pilgrimages

The skyline of the Old City at the Western Wall and Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Travel companies are reporting an upsurge in interest in pilgrimages.

  • June 26, 2021

Canada’s Catholic pilgrimage industry is poised to make a comeback this autumn as long as the COVID-19 metrics keep trending in the right direction.

International Heritage Tours and QS Travel & Tours Inc. are a couple of the enterprises with Catholic tours earmarked for the third quarter of the year. It’s been a tough past 16 months for both tour agencies, and for the industry as a whole. Pandemic restrictions had brought the travel industry to a standstill as borders closed around the world to combat COVID-19.

But there is a light beginning to shine. Representatives from both Ontario-based organizations report that registration momentum has picked up substantially in recent weeks as there is a growing confidence the nation is finally getting ahead of the pandemic as vaccines roll out.

“People really want to go and have a renewed spiritual experience,” said Halina Jablonski, the director of Catholic tours at International Heritage Tours for the past 11 years. “A few months ago, we had zero registrations, but people are starting to sign up and book the last two weeks.”

QS Travel and Tours travel consultant Steven Skoczek says his company also experienced “a period of quiet” when the pandemic was at its peak during the early months of 2021, but now fortunes appear to be changing.

“Restrictions are easing and I genuinely get a sense that people are eager to reconnect with their faith and one of the ways to do so is going on a pilgrimage,” said Skoczek. “In particular, people supposed to travel with us in 2020 are starting to reach out to us.”

International Heritage Tours is devising a bigger comeback in 2021 as 14 separate tours are scheduled between Sept. 15 and Nov. 14, including seven journeys to the Holy Land.

International Heritage Tours also has trips scheduled that will jet pilgrims to religious landmarks in Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain, among others. The company is opening the door for western and eastern Canadians to access these adventures by arranging departures in Alberta and Ontario respectively.

Jablonski is confident these tours will be successful for multiple reasons.

“Right now, things are moving really fast because right now you don’t have to have a vaccine passport — you only need to have a negative test,” Jablonski said. “All these hotels and bus companies have taken extra precautions to make sure people are in a clean, well-maintained environment. And all these hotels are great hotels that we have been working with for many years.”

QS Travel and Tours has organized a more modest schedule as its first pilgrimage with confirmed dates — a two-week adventure to Egypt, Jordan and the Holy Land — is not poised to commence until Remembrance Day in November. A tour in Mexico to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe from Dec. 10-13 is also on the books.

The company could get into the Canadian game sooner if inter-provincial travel conditions become sufficiently less stringent between Ontario and Quebec as this opens the door to executing a bus tour to the shrines of Quebec. Travel between the two provinces has just recently re-opened.

Skoczek himself is looking forward to being among the pilgrims venturing to the Holy Land. He was registered for a group scheduled to leave on March 24, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic snuffed out that possibility. He’s heard amazing testimonials about ventures to the Holy Land.

“People I’ve spoken with say being in those places really brings the Bible to life. You get a chance to be baptized in the Jordan River and see all the various places Catholics hold dear.”

The travel consultant adds that he’ll constantly monitor the travel conditions laid out by the Government of Canada and foreign entities like the Israeli Ministry of Tourism in the weeks ahead.

Due to the pandemic, the entire slate of Oberammergau Passion Plays scheduled to occur in 2020 will be performed in 2022. This play depicting the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross has been performed every 10 years since 1634 by the inhabitants of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany. The villagers vowed to perform the play each decade if God spared them of continued bubonic plague devastation.

International Heritage Tours and QS Travel and Tours are offering a combined total of 25 opportunities to see Oberammergau Passion Play.

What Your Peers are Saying

We work hard for you…

We wanted to say thank you for all your hard work organizing our pilgrimage. We had the experience of a lifetime. Everything worked out wonderfully. The flights were on time and went smoothly. The guides were very knowledgeable. 5 star experience and will be happy to refer others to Select International.

…and give you great value for your money…

…while keeping sight of what a pilgrimage should be…, …so you can focus on the experience, not the details….

Select removed all the thinking and planning for the trip which was great! It was nice not having to worry about the hotels and food. Also, our tour guides were amazing!! Select does a good job choosing Catholic tour guides. A lot of fun, and I would recommend again.

…and trust that Select will take care of you. No matter what.

Amy and I cannot thank you enough for your work to get us safely home.  [Other pilgrims (we met at checkpoints and the airports) were abandoned by their tour companies.]   We appreciate you and your colleagues at Select International and should we travel internationally in the future, we will be using Select International.  I have told countless friends and family members about you and your company.

Select works with the best guides.

Select International Tours only works with the best and most ethical guides in the business. We wouldn't trust your trip to anyone we don't trust.

I'm emailing to give a strong and heartfelt recommendation for our Holy Land guide, Hani. I also commend the bus driver, though I must admit I've forgotten his name. I recall that at some of the sights where Hani shared a short spiritual reflection/comment—and I happened to be scheduled to preach at Mass at that site—I thought that what he shared was as worthwhile and inspiring as anything I had preached or was planning to preach, depending on whose comments had come first.

Your Trip Supports Christians Living in the Holy Land

Our mission.

The Holy Land (Jordan, Israel, and Palestine) is home to over 350,000 Christians, most of whom are descendants of Jesus’ disciples and those whom the disciples converted. Sixty years ago, Christians accounted for about 18% of the population of the Holy Land; now they are only about 2%. There remain about 50,000 Christians in the Palestinian territories. The  Select to Give Foundation exists to help the Christians of the Holy Land! Through the funding and creation of programs and partnerships, we support innovative community efforts to help Christians achieve a safer and more prosperous existence.

Your Trip Supports This Mission

Select International Tours donates a portion of every registration to Select to Give. 100% of the donations received by Select to Give directly support Christians living in the Holy Land through various programs. To learn more, please visit:

TOUR LEADERS

We want to tell you that you can live your dream and with your leadership you can help your community live out their dreams.

Be not afraid…” “Come and see” and you can enrich your ministry and enhance your community’s understanding of Gospel by visiting Israel and walking the message of Christ and the disciples or by visiting the Bible Lands in Asia Minor. We want to invite you to walk in the footsteps of Christ let me remind you that the bible says “there is nothing new under the sun” the visit is unique but millions have done this before you and millions will do this after you. One of the earliest pilgrims was Abram (not Abraham, not yet) out of the blue God says to him:“Now the LORD said unto Abram: Get thee out of thy country, and from thy father’s house, unto the land that I will show thee.” Visit Israel and like the Psalmist you too will say “I rejoiced when they said unto me come let us go to the house of the Lord.

Whether you’re ready to host a tour group or you’re just thinking about it, the most important factor in the success of your tour is your unconditional decision that you are going to take and lead a group of your congregants, ministry supporters, or other friends on any of our unique and inspiring Journeys. Your leadership and commitment to go are vital! Start preparing between nine to twelve months before departure, the longer the period the better as it takes time and effort to promote the tour and to enlist participants. While it is up to you to decide the best time of year for your community’s travel we recommend scheduling your travel for low season = winter months rather than the busy (more expensive) holiday season, as when you travel in low season you are able to secure more competitive prices.

The main factors that govern the tour price (some are more expensive than others) are:

  • Destination
  • Transportation (Airline)
  • Level of hotel accommodation
  • Level and quantity of services included
  • Season of travel

Following a survey of ownership carried out in the late 1960s, ownership of the totality of the walls was vested in 1973 in the Spanish State, through the Ministry of Education and Science. It was transferred to the Xunta de Galicia by Royal Decree in 1994.

The Spanish Constitution reserves certain rights in relation to the heritage to the central government. However, these are delegated to the competent agencies in the Autonomous Communities, in this case the Xunta de Galicia. For the Lugo walls the Xunta is in the position of both owner and competent agency. Under the Galician Heritage Law the Xunta is required to cooperate with the municipal authorities in ensuring the protection and conservation of listed monuments, and certain functions are delegated down to them. The Xunta operates through its General Directorate of Cultural Heritage (Dirección General de Patrimonio Cultural), based in Santiago de Compostela.

The Master Plan for the Conservation and Restoration of the Roman Walls of Lugo (1992) covered proposals for actions to be taken in respect of research and techniques of restoration. This was followed in 1997 by the Special Plan for the Protection and Internal Reform of the Fortified Enceinte of the Town of Lugo, which is concerned principally with the urban environment of the historic town. However, it has a direct impact on the protection afforded to the walls, in terms of traffic planning, the creation of open spaces, and regulation of building heights. Another planning instrument which affects the walls is the Special Plan for the Protection of the Miño [river], approved by the municipality at the beginning of 1998.

There is at the present time no management plan sensu stricto for the walls in operation in Lugo: work is continuing on the basis of the 1992 plan. Nor is there a technical unit specifically responsible for the conservation and restoration of the walls. It is against this background that serious consideration is being given to the creation of an independent foundation, under royal patronage and with representatives from government, academic, voluntary, and business institutions, to work with the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of Galicia. The work plan of this body would include the development and implementation of integrated conservation, restoration, and maintenance programmes.

The WH area is managed directly by the Divisional Forest Officer from the Forest Dept. A national steering Committee co-ordinates institutions for Sinharaja as a National Wilderness Area, Biosphere Reserve (1988), and WH site. There are two management plans, prepared in 1985/86 and 1992/94, which emphasise conservation, scientific research, buffer zone management, benefit-sharing, and community participation.

Extension of "Gough Island Wildlife Reserve".

China Heritage Tour

On Holt’s annual heritage tour of China, adoptees and their families have the opportunity to experience the culture, customs and history of China as presented by the local people. They get to see everyday life in China, from big cities to rural villages, and participate in cultural activities. They visit a number of famous Chinese tourist sites such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Terracotta Warriors and the mountains of Guilin. From local experts, they learn about adoption, orphanages and child welfare in China. Whenever possible, adoptees also have a chance to visit their former orphanage, foster family and/or sites significant to their adoption story and meet people who touched their early lives before they joined their adoptive families. The China tour is open to families of children adopted from any province and through any agency.

This tour typically includes visits to the Korean Folk Village, Seoul Tower, DMZ, the fish market in Busan, Mt. Hallasan in Jeju, and much more. Tour participants also visit Holt sponsor and donor-supported programs such as the Ilsan Center for children and adults with special needs, a children’s care center, and a shelter for single mothers and their children. This tour is open to all Korean adoptees and adoptive families, whether or not their placing agency was Holt. Adoptees of all ages are able to visit their birth city or orphanage. If an adoptee lived in foster care in Seoul before joining their adoptive family, we also try to arrange a meeting with their former foster family. Adoptees ages 13 and older are able to review their adoption file with a Holt Korea social worker and discuss any questions they have about their roots. And for adult adoptees, ages 19 and older, we can also initiate a birth family search.

Mongolia Heritage Tour

In 2017, adoptees and their families traveled on Holt’s first heritage tour of Mongolia. Designed to be both a personal as well as a shared experience for adoptees, this tour gives adoptees and their loved ones the opportunity, if possible, to visit their orphanages, the locations where they were found, and to meet individuals who may have cared for them before they joined their adoptive families in the U.S. Together, the tour participants learn about the amazing history and rich cultural heritage of this remarkable nation. They travel outside of Ulaanbaatar, ride camels and horses, visit historic sites and spend the night under the stars sleeping in traditional Mongolian homes called gers .

Sunday's final round of 2024 rbc heritage suspended due to darkness after lengthy weather delay, share this article.

The last thing you want to hear is the horn on the golf course, but that’s precisely what fans at the 2024 RBC Heritage heard on Sunday. Twice.

The final round play at Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina was suspended due to inclement weather at 4:28 p.m. ET. The final group featuring tournament leader Scottie Scheffler was in the fairway on the 11th hole when play was called.

On the CBS broadcast, the Tour’s Senior Director, TV rules and review analyst Mark Dusbabek made it clear that play was called due to lightning in the area and not because of the heavy rains that were falling. At 6:30 p.m. ET the final update came that play would resume at 7 p.m. ET, ending a two-and-a-half-hour delay. Less than an hour later at 7:47 p.m. ET the horn sounded to call play for the day due to darkness.

Nine players will return to the course at 8 a.m. ET Monday morning to finish he tournament. Scottie Scheffler, who has won three of his last four starts, holds a five-shot lead with three holes to play.

Why was the RBC Heritage suspended in the fourth round?

The tournament in south carolina was suspended at 4.28 p.m et, with scottie scheffler at the top of the leaderboard. play resumed at 7 p.m..

David Nelson

The RBC Heritage was suspended in the final round on Sunday, April 21, due to risk of lightning. The players were called off the course at 4.28 p.m. ET as the rain continued to lash down, with the precipitation having started around 4 p.m. Play resumed at 7 p.m.

While the rains were heavy, the PGA Tour’s representative Mark Dusbabek said the suspension was for the risk of lightning, not because of the rain itself.

All the grandstands were closed, along with concessions and services within temporary structures.

Play resumes at 8 a.m. Monday

Play resumed at 7 p.m. ET but was quickly called for the day as night fell. Play will continue on Monday at 8 am ET.

Round 4 of the RBC Heritage has been suspended due to darkness and will resume tomorrow at 8am ET. The course will be closed to fans on Monday due to the limited time of play and safety concerns. We appreciate your understanding. pic.twitter.com/pbsPsde0si — RBC Heritage (@RBC_Heritage) April 22, 2024

Initially the plan was to resume play at 6 p.m. ET, however with there still being a risk of lightning the PGA Tour updated that to say that play would NOT resume at 6 p.m. ET, pushing it back to 7 p.m. Once play resumed, it was soon determined that the poor light conditions would be unsafe so play was ended for the day and will resume at 8 am ET on Monday.

RUN TA EK, Cambodia (AP) — It’s been more than a year since Yem Srey Pin moved with her family from the village where she was born on Cambodia’s Angkor UNESCO World Heritage site to Run Ta Ek, a dusty new settlement about 25 kilometers (15 miles) away.

A tattered Cambodian flag flaps gently in the scorching midday sun on her corner lot, its depiction of the Angkor Wat temple barely still visible, while her brother scoops water from a clay cistern onto a neighbor’s cow that he tends during the day.

Hers is one of about 5,000 families relocated from the sprawling archaeological site, one of Southeast Asia’s top tourist draws, by Cambodian authorities in an ongoing program that Amnesty International has condemned as a “gross violation of international human rights law.” Another 5,000 families are still due to be moved.

The allegations have drawn strong expressions of concern from UNESCO and a spirited rebuttal from Cambodian authorities , who say they’re doing nothing more than protecting the heritage land from illegal squatters.

Yem Srey Pin’s single-room home, its reused corrugated steel siding perforated by rust and old nail holes, is a far cry better than the makeshift tent she lived in with her husband and five children when they first arrived, which did little to protect from the monsoon rains and blew down in the winds.

And their 600-square-meter (6,500-square-foot) property is significantly bigger than the 90-square-meter (1,000-square-foot) plot they occupied illegally in the village of Khvean on the Angkor site.

But the 35-year-old is also in debt from building the new house. Her husband finds less construction work nearby and his wages are lower, and there are no wild fruits or vegetables she can forage, nor rice paddies where she can collect crabs to sell at her mother’s stand.

“After more than a year here I haven’t been able to save any money and I haven’t earned anything,” she said, as her 12-year-old son rocked her 8-month-old daughter in a hammock in front of a fan to take the edge off midday heat nearing 40 degrees Celsius (topping 100 degrees Fahrenheit).

“Living here is just hand to mouth because the income we do have goes to pay for the rice, food and my children’s school.”

UNESCO calls it one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, and it is critical to Cambodia’s tourism industry.

When it was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1992, it was named a “living heritage site” whose local population observed ancestral traditions and cultural practices that have disappeared elsewhere.

Still, UNESCO at the time noted that Angkor was under “dual pressures” from some 100,000 inhabitants in 112 historic settlements who “constantly try to expand their dwelling areas,” and from encroachment from the nearby town of Siem Reap.

Cambodia’s answer was a plan to entice the 10,000 families illegally squatting in the area to resettle at Run Ta Ek and another site, as well as to encourage some from the 112 historic settlements to relocate as their families grow in size.

“People got married, they had children, so the number of people were on the rise, including those coming illegally,” said Long Kosal, deputy director general and spokesperson for the Cambodian agency known as APSARA that’s responsible for managing the Angkor site .

“What we did was that we provided an option.”

Cambodia began moving people to Run Ta Ek in 2022, giving those who volunteered to leave their homes in the Angkor area plots of land, a two-month supply of canned food and rice, a tarp and 30 sheets of corrugated metal to use to build a home. Benefits also included a Poor Card, essentially a state welfare program giving them around 310,000 riel (about $75) monthly for 10 years.

In a November report, Amnesty questioned how voluntary the relocations actually were, saying many people they interviewed were threatened or coerced into moving and that the relocations were more “forced evictions in disguise.”

The rights group cited a speech from former Prime Minister Hun Sen in which he said people “must either leave the Angkor site soon and receive some form of compensation or be evicted at a later time and receive nothing.”

Amnesty also noted Hun Sen’s track record, saying that under his long-time rule Cambodian authorities had been responsible for several forced evictions elsewhere that it alleged “constituted gross violations of human rights.” It said Run Ta Ek — with dirt roads, insufficient drainage, poor sanitation and other issues — did not fulfil international obligations under human rights treaties to provide people adequate housing.

That has now changed: Homes with outhouses have been built, roads paved, and sewers installed. Primitive hand pumps made of blue PVC piping provide water, and electricity has been run in.

There’s a school, a health center, a temple; bus routes were added, and a market area was built but is not yet operating, Long Kosal said.

Hun Sen’s successor, his son Hun Manet , traveled to Run Ta Ek in December to meet with residents and highlight infrastructure improvements in an attempt to allay the growing international concerns surrounding Cambodia’s most important tourist site .

He reiterated his father’s contention that if the squatters are not removed, the site risks being delisted by UNESCO — something UNESCO has never threatened.

Amnesty itself concedes life has gotten better for the residents of Run Ta Ek, but maintains there are major concerns.

Families have had to take on heavy debt to build even their basic houses, there is little work to be found, and the village — without any significant tree cover — is swelteringly hot during the day and has little shelter from winds or monsoon rains, said Montse Ferrer, the head of Amnesty’s research team investigating the Angkor Wat resettlements.

“People no longer have income,” she said in an interview in Geneva. “They had a clear source of income at the time — tourism — but also other sources of income linked to the location at Angkor. They are now at least 30 minutes away from the site and can no longer access these sources.”

Following Amnesty’s scathing report, UNESCO moved up the timeline for Cambodia’s submission of its own report on the state of conservation at the Angkor site, specifically asking for the allegations to be addressed.

In that report, submitted to UNESCO in March, Cambodia said it had not violated any international laws with the relocations, saying it was only moving people involved in the “illegal occupation of heritage land” and that in Run Ta Ek many were now property owners for the first time in their lives.

UNESCO said it would not comment on the situation until it has been able to analyze Cambodia’s response, but referred The Associated Press to previous comments from Lazare Eloundou Assomo, director of the UNESCO World Heritage Center.

Speaking after Amnesty released its report, he stressed the agency had “always categorically rejected the use of forced evictions as a tool for management of World Heritage listed sites.”

“Since the Cambodian authorities announced their population relocation program in 2022, UNESCO has repeatedly and publicly recalled the importance of full respect for human rights,” he said.

Ferrer said Cambodia’s response avoids addressing many of the issues raised by Amnesty, and that UNESCO — even though it says it has little ability to change national policies — has not yet used the significant leverage it does have.

“They could decide that the site is in danger, which they haven’t. They can advise the World Heritage Committee, which is the ultimate body that can decide to take specific action against the state of Cambodia,” she said. “It can also conduct its own investigation and make public recommendations about what the state can be doing.”

Run Ta Ek resident Chhem Hay decided in June to take the opportunity to move from the village where she’d lived since she was a young teenager to the new settlement, enticed by the prospect of owning her own land, and a larger property than she’d ever had.

Her situation has improved since the austere early days living with her husband and teenage daughter in a tent on a dirt lot surviving on rice and prahok — a fermented fish paste that is an inexpensive staple for many Cambodians — paid for by charity handouts from Buddhist monks.

“I didn’t dare eat anything much,” she said. “I tried to save money to buy bricks and sand.”

She was able to get a bank loan for $1,000 for the materials for a house, and now lives in a single-room brick structure built by her construction-worker husband and other family.

The income from the government Poor Card is enough for the monthly payments on the high-interest 2-year loan, which will have cost her almost double the principle when it’s paid off. She has four chickens and some newly hatched chicks, though had to kill six others to feed the men building her house.

But the 37-year-old lost her work as a garbage collector in her village, and her husband has to drive in to Siem Reap for construction work, setting out at 5 a.m. to make it on time and spending about a third of his 35,000 riel ($8.70) daily income on gas for his motorbike.

She’s looking forward to the day when the village market is opened, and hopes the government will establish a factory or similar business that will provide jobs.

“I don’t know what will happen at the moment,” she said, standing in her doorway. “I’m just living day by day.”

For residents like Chhem Hay, Cambodia plans to offer vocational training, but does not envision further financial compensation, Long Kosal said.

“Once you have education, once you have a vocational skill, you can find a job easily,” he said. “Where you just remain there waiting for support, then you’re not going to go anywhere. You’re not going to make it.”

Meanwhile, villagers say many have already given up on Run Ta Ek, putting padlocks on their new homes and moving away — presumably back closer to Siem Reap and the Angkor site where it is easier to make a living.

Yem Srey Pin said even though Run Ta Ek has slowly improved since she arrived in February 2023, and her new home will be paid off fairly soon, she’d rather return to her village if it were possible.

But the village of Khvean is already slowly being reclaimed by the jungle, with grass growing through the foundations of houses, all that remains of the former homes. A hair curler, tattered blue playing cards and a trampled baseball cap lying on the ground are among the last vestiges of the lives left behind.

With almost all of the village’s 400 families moving out, aside from a few who work at a neighboring military facility, Yem Srey Pin says there’s nothing left for her there, even if APSARA would let her return.

“I can’t live in my old village alone,” she said.

Associated Press writer Jamey Keaten contributed to this report from Geneva.

Greens vow to use Senate numbers if ministers fail to reach deal on public school funding

The Greens have vowed to used their numbers in the Senate if education ministers fail to reach a deal on fully funding public schools in every state and territory.

The education minister, Jason Clare , has so far inked deals with Western Australia and the Northern Territory to reach 100% of the Schooling Resource Standard – a target that has only been met by the ACT.

Ministers will hold their next meeting in Perth on Friday, with funding negotiations expected to be on the agenda. Clare has flagged his intention to introduce legislation on funding agreements by the end of the year.

The Greens spokesperson on primary and secondary education, senator Penny Allman-Payne , said the party had a bill before the Senate that would axe the arbitrary 20% cap on commonwealth funding of public schools and replace it with a floor of 25%.

This is what the states and the unions are calling for and it’s what Labor could deliver if it backed our bill. We need to end overfunding of privileged private schools and ensure that our public system is fully funded, fully staffed and inclusive for all students.

Murujuga traditional custodians have called for an immediate inquiry to investigate the alleged leak of a confidential report on the Burrup peninsula to the media.

Save our Songlines – a group of traditional custodians who initiated a cultural heritage review into the impact of Woodside’s Burrup Hub and other industry on world heritage-nominated Murujuga rock art – accused Woodside of attempting to “sabotage and undermine” the cultural heritage assessment just days before its AGM.

Woodside said it “rejects any assertion” they were responsible for “leaking any aspect of the Section 10 inquiry”.

Woodside does not breach its confidentiality obligations .

The draft report was provided to the applicants and a small number of other affected parties by the environment department late on 19 April on a strictly confidential basis, but Save our Songlines says this was leaked to media within hours.

An exclusive report in The Australian was published on 20 April.

This came just days before the Woodside AGM on 24 April, and a fortnight before federal senators are due to travel to the Burrup for committee inquiry hearings for the Protecting Sea Country bill on 6 and 7 May, Save our Songlines said.

Mardudhunera woman Raelene Cooper , a former chair of the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation, said:

I am calling for a full inquiry and investigation into how this summary of my draft report was leaked before I even had a chance to read it or respond to the minister. I will be seeking legal advice on what this means for the process and how those responsible for the leaking of this document can be held accountable before we respond further to the draft report.

‘We reject the cruelty of Israel’: Jewish group marks Passover at Labor MP’s office in solidarity with Palestine

Advocacy group Loud Jew Collective have marked the beginning of Passover with a protest at the office of Labor MP Josh Burns , where more than 60 Jewish participants called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

The group also called for an end to diplomatic relations with Israel and for the free and unrestrained delivery of aid to Gaza.

Jewish community leader and organiser from the Loud Jew Collective, Gem Walsh , said:

We have called this protest because again and again we see our government fail in their basic obligations to support and uphold Palestinians’ human rights. Josh Burns is the chair of the parliamentary joint committee on human rights, so he has a special responsibility to be calling for a ceasefire, free and unfettered food and aid, [and] an end to this genocide that Israel is waging against Palestinians. As Jews we disavow what Israel is doing. We are gathered today, as part of a growing global movement of Jews who want freedom and liberation for all. We reject the cruelty of Israel and Zionism.

The Loud Jew Collective held a protest at MP Josh Burns’s office today and are calling for a ceasefire.

Government commits $5m for research into telehealth

A virtual emergency department is among the research projects that will share in more than $5m from the government to identify how telehealth services can best be used in Australia.

The six projects receiving grants from the National Health and Medical Research Council will develop a solid evidence-base to inform future health policy on telehealth, while supporting current services.

The announcement comes as Australia’s health regulator earlier this month said it is fielding complaints about the use of artificial intelligence during telehealth prescribing , and patients being issued with prescriptions without speaking with a doctor.

The health minister, Mark Butler , today said that, as telehealth had become a “permanent feature of the health system”, the government was committed to ensuring its quality for patients:

The expansion of telehealth services, during the early days of Covid, has been described as ‘10 years of change in 10 days’ and that is not an exaggeration. The Albanese government is committed to unlocking telehealth’s potential, while also ensuring its safety and quality for patients. These six research projects will help point the way to better telehealth.

Health minister Mark Butler.

Prof Jonathon Karnon from Flinders University will lead a project to improve the design and application of virtual emergency department services in Australia.

Prof Meredith Makeham and a team from the University of Sydney will explore the safety, quality, acceptability, and sustainability of using telehealth to provide care for aged care residents.

James Cook University researcher Prof Sarah Larkins will investigate the experience of telehealth providers and patients in North Queensland, to optimise access, quality and safety in rural and remote Australia.

PM challenges Dutton to outline where proposed nuclear power stations would be built

Anthony Albanese has challenged Peter Dutton to finally outline where the Liberals would plan to build nuclear power stations, after the opposition leader said yesterday that the long-awaited unveiling of their alternative energy policy may be delayed.

Dutton and the Coalition have repeatedly raised expectations that they would detail their nuclear alternative around the May budget. But the opposition leader said on Insiders yesterday that the events of the recent Sydney stabbings had “meant that part of our programme couldn’t be rolled out” and “we’ll announce it in due course”.

Reports this morning in the Nine newspapers indicate there may be tension inside the Coalition partyroom on locking in the locations for the power stations.

Albanese said the Liberals should say “who will fund them, what’s the timeframe, and what they’ll do to fill in the gap that will be there with the closure of coal fired power plants, which is scheduled regardless of who’s in power, in coming years”.

Nuclear reactors don’t have any financing.

PM says it is ‘extraordinary’ X not complying with takedown order

Anthony Albanese says it is “extraordinary” that X, formerly known as Twitter, did not comply with orders from the eSafety Commissioner to take down footage of the Wakeley church stabbing.

Elon Musk ’s platform said over the weekend that Australia “does not have the authority to dictate what content X’s users can see globally”, claiming it would challenge the order in court. Musk himself criticised eSafety commissioner Julie Inman Grant as the “Australian censorship commissar”.

In a press conference in Mackay, Albanese has claimed “the pain of many people has been exacerbated by what occurred on social media” after the recent Sydney stabbings.

Social media has a social responsibility. In addition to that, of course, we know some of the misinformation, including naming some innocent bloke as the perpetrator, is just extraordinary, that that occurred and that that was replicated. We need to recognise that, and social media has a responsibility. By and large, people responded appropriately to the calls by the eSafety Commission. X chose not to. I find it extraordinary X chose not to comply, and are trying to argue their case. We know, I think overwhelmingly, Australians want misinformation and disinformation to stop. This isn’t about freedom of expression. This is about the dangerous implications that can occur when things that are simply not true, that everyone knows is not true, are replicated and weaponised in order to cause division, and in this case, to promote negative statements.

Musk an ‘egotistical billionaire’ for ignoring X takedown requests: Plibersek

Labor’s frontbench are coming out in full force against X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk , after he accused Australia’s online safety watchdog of being a “censorship commissar” for ordering the social media company to take down graphic footage of a stabbing attack at a Sydney church.

The environment minister, Tanya Plibersek , is the latest minister to have a dig at the tech billionaire, calling him “egotistical” for ignoring Australia’s lawful request to take the violent imagery off the site.

Plibersek accused Musk of caring more about getting his way rather than extending respect to victims of the crime on Sunrise this morning:

It just beggars belief, really, doesn’t it, that this guy, this egotistical billionaire, thinks that it’s more important for him to be able to show whatever he wants on X or Twitter or whatever you want to call it today, it’s more important for him to have his way than to respect the victims of the crimes that are being shown on social media and to protect our Australian community from the harmful impact of showing this terrible stuff on social media … We need to keep Australians safe from this terrible stuff on social media. And Elon Musk doesn’t dictate to the Australian government what we are doing here domestically with our laws.

Minister for environment Tanya Plibersek.

Chalmers expects funding for western Sydney to ‘continue to grow’

Jim Chalmers also responded to accusations the government was abandoning western Sydney on infrastructure. The front page of today’s Daily Telegraph said Labor was defunding upgrades for roads which are crucial to the success of western Sydney’s international airport.

Chalmers said western Sydney would be a “big priority in the budget”, with $14bn already spent there:

That’s more than the Liberals and Nationals did and we expect that investment to continue to grow. Funding for infrastructure in NSW went up by around $1.3bn in Myefo, and one of the reasons why we want to get the budget in much better nick is so that we can afford to invest in really important parts of Australia like western Sydney. I’m a huge believer in western Sydney. I think western Sydney is, in many ways, the hope … when it comes to the way [that] we want to build an economy that delivers for more people, and you should expect to see that reflected in the decisions that we take in the budget.

Q : Just on housing affordability and cost of living, has there been any further consideration given to reforming negative gearing?
