George Ranch Tour

The George Ranch is a historical park whose history follows family lines beginning in 1824 when Texas was still part of Mexico. The George Ranch has since passed through four generations and has grown into one of Fort Bend County's landmarks.

Today, the George Ranch is a 23,000-acre working ranch. The family's original "home place" is at the core of the George Ranch Historical Park where the legends and legacies of those who shaped this place come to life every day. Authentic locations, historic homes, costumed presenters and a remarkable story of determination and courage set the stage for trekking through Texas history.

George Ranch Sign

East Texas was known for farming and plantations.  This is one of the few operating ranches in this part of the state.  Located in Richmond, Texas, it is about 45 minutes from downtown Houston.  You can see re-enactors there and tour inside 3 historic or replicas of historic homes.

The George Ranch tour includes:

  • Transportation
  • A tractor-drawn ride
  • A visit to a modern-day smithy at the Oldenburg blacksmith’s Shop
  • Watching working cowboy demonstrations
  • Observing livestock such as pigs, chickens, and horses,
  • Replica of the 1830s Henry and Nancy Jones dog-trot-style log cabin
  • The 1860s sharecropper’s cabin
  • The 1860s prairie home of Poly and William Ryon
  • The 1890s Davis Mansion
  • The 1930s A.P. and Mamie George Ranch House

You will also visit the original family cemetery that was actively used from the 1820s to 1916.

Dixie Dude Ranch 1400x1050 - Texas View

In the heart of Texas, we find a vibrant narrative woven through our cowboy boots and toasting campfires. Dude ranches emerged as a bridge between the rugged cowboy lifestyle and those yearning for a slice of the frontier life. Throughout the 20th century, our Texas dude ranches have blossomed, inviting adventurers to experience the Lone Star state like a true cowboy.

In the early 1900s, Texas cattle ranching was more than a profession—it was a way of life. As the West began to captivate the nation’s imagination, visitors from the east coast and beyond sought authentic Western experiences. Ranch owners, recognizing an opportunity, opened their sprawling estates to guests, giving birth to the dude ranch industry.

  • 1920s & 1930s : The transition to guest ranches begins, providing income streams for ranchers.
  • Guest activities : Horseback riding, cattle herding, and fishing among the Texan backdrop.

Our dude ranches are steeped in tradition, where one can still find that quintessential cowboy experience—a testament to a long-standing heritage of American culture. By the mid-20th century, these ranches had established themselves as a staple for both domestic and international visitors looking to embrace the cowboy culture.

This evolution has maintained the authentic appeal of ranching life while introducing the comforts of modern hospitality. The likes of Cibolo Creek Ranch exemplify the melding of luxury with tradition.

As we carry forward, our dude ranches hold firm to their roots, ensuring every guest leaves with dust on their boots and warmth in their hearts, the same way they have for generations.

Dining and Cuisine

As we explore the heart of the Wild West, our culinary journey at Texas dude ranches is as vital as the day’s adventures. We’ll savor authentic campfire cookouts, indulge in Texan barbecue favorites, and delight in local culinary delights that give us a true taste of cowboy culture.

Picture us gathered around a blazing fire under the starry Texas sky, the aroma of sizzling meats and vegetables filling the air. This is a campfire cookout, an essential part of any dude ranch experience, where we bond over open-flame grilling and stories from the trail. The s’mores aren’t just for the kids – we all revel in the gooey, melted chocolate and marshmallow, sandwiched between graham crackers.

  • Main Course: Grilled steak, chicken skewers, foil-wrapped fish
  • Sides: Roasted corn, baked beans, hearty cowboy potatoes
  • Dessert: Classic s’mores, Dutch oven apple crisp

Nothing quite says Texas like barbecue, and on dude ranches, we’re treated to the best of Texan barbecue. The low and slow cooking method ensures that every bite of brisket, rib, and sausage is succulent and packed with flavor, enhanced by the traditional mop sauces or dry rubs characteristic of the region.

  • Brisket: Slow-cooked, smoke-kissed with a perfect bark
  • Ribs: Tender, falling off the bone with a sticky glaze
  • Sausages: Spicy and flavorful, with a satisfying snap

Exploring dude ranches gives us an opportunity to taste the local culinary delights. We’re talking fresh, farm-to-table ingredients delivering flavors that are robust and genuine, representing the local fare. We might even try some game meats, like venison or quail, always prepared with the utmost care to showcase their unique tastes.

  • Game Meats: Venison chili, grilled quail, bison burgers
  • Farm Fresh Veggies: Okra, fried green tomatoes, squash casserole
  • Local Desserts: Peach cobbler, pecan pie, sweet tea ice cream

Accommodations and Amenities

We’re thrilled to guide you through the diverse accommodations and amenities offered at Texas dude ranches, where you can embrace the spirit of the Wild West without compromising on comfort.

At the heart of a Texas dude ranch experience is the variety of lodging options available to us. We can choose to stay in historic ranch houses that have been standing for a century, offering an authentic peek into the past. For something more intimate, cozy cabins or cottages nestled in the countryside provide a serene retreat. For those of us craving luxury, posh accommodations such as those found at Cibolo Creek Ranch blend elegance with frontier flair.

Even in the rustic settings of a dude ranch, we bask in the comfort of modern amenities. Ranches are designed to balance outdoor adventure with indoor luxury, ensuring that guests have access to conveniences that make the stay comfortable. Here are some common amenities we might find:

  • Recreation: From horseback riding and hiking to swimming pools and hot tubs.
  • Dining: Hearty meals, often featuring local cuisine and sometimes served family-style.
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi for those who need to stay connected to the outside world.
  • Wellness: Spa services to relax after a day of ranch activities.

Each ranch, such as Rancho Cortez, cultivates its unique atmosphere by combining modern amenities with a rustic aesthetic. This ensures we enjoy the best of both worlds—an authentic ranch experience paired with the comforts we’re accustomed to.

Seasonal Considerations

When planning our trip to Texas dude ranches, we need to consider the time of year for the best experience. Let’s dive into the best times to visit and the expected weather patterns so we can pack our cowboy boots at just the right time!

Spring (March – May): This is one of the most beautiful times to visit Texas dude ranches. We’ll enjoy mild temperatures and the blooming of wildflowers, especially the famous Texas bluebonnets. It’s a great period for horseback riding and outdoor activities before the summer heat kicks in.

Fall (September – November): The crisp air and changing foliage make autumn an exceptional choice for our dude ranch adventure. It is also less crowded, and the temperatures are perfect for those long trail rides and evenings by the campfire.

Summer (June – August): Expect hot and dry conditions with temperatures often soaring above 90°F. It’s essential to stay hydrated and pack plenty of sunscreens if we choose a summertime ranch stay.

Winter (December – February): Winters can be mild but unpredictable with occasional cold fronts. It’s wise for us to pack layers and be ready for a drop in temperature, especially if we’re planning to participate in early morning or night activities.

The Western Experience in Texas

Looking for a slice of texas culture since the late 19th century, the american cowboy has been a figure of special significance, and cowgirls have gained similar respect for their roles and achievements. thanks to a variety of guest and dude ranches, historic districts, entertainment venues, rodeos and excursions, visitors can easily slip into the boots of this cowboy lifestyle and live the western experience in texas..

Visitors can experience the authentic cowboy lifestyle by trading in their suits and ties for jeans and boots and visiting one of the 100-plus guest and dude ranches Texas has to offer. Experienced cowboys lead groups on overnight trail rides and horseback riding adventures; families can spend the days saddled up, followed by evenings enjoying traditional cowboy fare cooked outdoors fireside beneath a sky full of stars - uninterrupted by big-city lights. For a more adventurous trip, experienced riders can participate in authentic cattle drives rounding up herds of cattle across vast open ranges. Learn the origins, history and importance of herding while learning how to sort and pen.

Visit a Guest Ranch

These guest ranches offer many attractions for the cowboys and cowgirls-in-training as well. Swimming pools, water slides, canoeing and horseback riding lessons are offered at most across the state, making them both kid and family friendly. Additionally, for the lower-key cowboy, bird and wildlife watching are popular attractions that surely won’t disappoint! Grab a pair of hiking boots and a walking stick and hit the trails to observe the many species native to Texas.

Nestled in the heart of some of the most scenic areas of Texas, many of the ranches are easily accessible from urban centers. Just southwest of Houston, George Ranch is a working ranch featuring historic homes, costumed presenters and hands-on activities. And in Kingsville – located along the coast between Corpus Christi and Brownsville - King Ranch is one of the world’s largest ranches featuring guided tours to illustrate the history and modern-day workings of the ranch. Ninety miles northwest of Fort Worth, Graham is home to the Wildcatter Ranch , which covers 1,500 acres and offers the perfect escape for adventure-seeking families.

More centrally located in the Texas Hill Country, the small town of Bandera is known as the "Cowboy Capital of the World.” Modern-day visitors can experience this town’s strong rodeo tradition by staying at one of the Bandera County dude ranches, where horseback excursions and chuckwagon meals are still the norm. For a night in town, unwind the Old West way by enjoying the live music at one of the local honky-tonks.

Cowboy Life in Texas

In the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, cosmopolitan cowboy meets Wild West with a host of sights and activities. In Dallas, Pioneer Plaza houses the world’s largest bronze monument, displaying 40 Texas longhorn steer being driven by three cowboys on horseback, a celebration of the trails that led cattle to markets. Nearby, the historic West End Entertainment District offers specialty shops and the area’s most famous steakhouses and saloons, including Gilley’s Dallas , which features the mechanical bull from the legendary Hollywood movie “Urban Cowboy.”

The Chisholm Trail , which you might have heard about from movies and songs, was a crucial 19th century cattle route that ran from San Antonio to Abilene, hitting Fort Worth on the way. The trail still exists, and its historical and cultural significance is enough to warrant a visit, but not by foot. Ride down the old Chisholm Trail on horseback like a cowhand of a bygone era, while enjoying a scenic view of the Fort Worth skyline.

From a cultural perspective, the city of Fort Worth – known for cowboys and culture – features some of the country’s best museums of the American West, such as the Sid Richardson Museum , the  Amon Carter Museum and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame .  Sundance Square offers additional museums, art galleries, boutiques and restaurants. The Old West comes to life in the Stockyards National Historic District with the world’s only twice-daily cattle drive, known as the Fort Worth Herd, and on weekends, the Stockyards Championship Rodeo. Don't forget to add the world’s largest honky-tonk, Billy Bob’s Texas, named "Country Music Club of the Year" eight times by the Academy of Country Music and three times by the Country Music Association to your must-see list in Fort Worth!

In West Texas, the semiannual Longhorn Cattle Drive takes place each spring and fall in Big Bend Ranch State Park . For three days, guests can experience life on a working ranch by driving the longhorns from the rugged country to ranch headquarters. It is certain that visitors will leave with a healthy respect for the cowboy lifestyle and, more importantly, feeling like “The Duke” – as if they are riding straight out of the Hollywood movies.

In the spring and summer months, rodeo season is in full swing across the state. Visitors come from across the country to enjoy this Western tradition filled with sights, sounds, scents, tastes and experiences.  With high-stakes professional roping and riding, concert performances, carnivals, barbecue cook-offs, live auctions, trail rides and more, rodeos offer something for everyone. Well-known annual events include the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo , San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo  and Rodeo Austin .

So dust off the boots, grab a cowboy hat and hit the trails for an unrivalled Texas experience, where the Wild West meets the cosmopolitan cowboy in an unforgettable way.

In the heart of Texas Hill Country sits the JL Bar Ranch, Resort & Spa, a 13,000-acre property, perfect for solitude and venturing out in wide-open spaces.

WHEN YOU’RE SURROUNDED BY CONGESTED ROADS , crowded restaurants , and what could easily be deemed a concrete jungle , you forget how much rural space the Lone Star State encompasses. Good thing for Texans, you don't have to travel far to relax and see views so mesmerizing you feel like you’re standing in a postcard.

And what better place to do just that than a getaway at a sprawling dude ranch? Let your everyday worries fade away as you live out your cowboy fantasies and roam in wide-open spaces. It could be like City Slickers , only less sad at the end. (Spoiler alert for that 1991 classic.) Choose anything from luxury ranch resorts with high-end amenities to  family-friendly working ranches and activities. As Johnny Cash would say, “Bury me not on the lone prairie.” Here are seven dude ranches that’ll take you back to simpler times.

2021 Travelers Award

DAY CAMP PROGRAM Offered during Spring, Summer, and Winter Breaks

The love of horses and the coherent heart connection, recent studies conducted by the institute of heartmath provide a clue to explain the bidirectional “healing” that happens when we are near horses. according to researchers, the heart has a larger electromagnetic field and a higher level of intelligence than the brain: a magnetometer can measure the heart’s energy field radiating up to 8 to 10 feet around the human body. while this is certainly significant, it is perhaps more impressive that the electromagnetic field projected by the horse’s heart is five times larger than the human one (imagine a sphere-shaped field that completely surrounds you)..

Cypress Trails Heartmath

The horse’s electromagnetic field is also stronger than ours and can actually directly influence our own heart rhythm! Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a “coherent” heart rhythm (heart rate pattern) which explains why we may “feel better” when we are around them. . . .studies have found that a coherent heart pattern or HRV is a robust measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy–that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.

A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adjust to stressful situations very efficiently. often times, we only need to be in a horse’s presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace. in fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain suppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy.”.

Best Horse Boarders in Houston, TX

Tucked away behind Bush Airport, I would have never expected this place to be here. ...It is what you would expect! The thing that makes this place great is the staff that works there is super friendly! Even on the phone I could tell they were going to be very nice/helpful when we got there. I scored some major boyfriend points, the service was great, the horses were beautiful... I was a happy camper.

My boyfriend and I are currently active duty; I'm stationed in WA and he's in New Jersey so we planned a trip to Houston, TX while we were on leave and I had the bright idea of going horseback riding. ... My boyfriend and I had a blast and said we would love to come back and ride with them again. I would recommend ... Cypress Trails if you plan a trip to Houston.

For my gf's 25th birthday I wanted to do something special for her.  She had been saying for a long time that she loves horses and recently, while at the renaissance festival I realized that she REALLY loves horses. I was really scared at first ... but by the end I was in control. It was a blast! Overall, they give you good tips for beginners and it was fun experience.

My girlfriend and I had a blast. We did a two-hour ride and we were the only ones in that time slot. Our guide was David and he showed us the ropes really effectively. ... My g/f and I were extremely pleased with the whole experience, and we plan on telling everyone that they should go there. The horses were healthy and strong too.

I had a great ride with Laura and Kari. Although it was humid, and some trails we inaccessible due to flooding, I had an awesome time. They make sure to adjust to your skill level and follow safety procedures. They were a great pair to ride with, hilarious and personable. ... The prices are reasonable and I'm so glad I went through with it!

My daughter, her sister and I went to Cypress Trails today for a four hour lunch ride. My daughter was scared after being on the horse for a few minutes and decided not to ride. They led her back to the ranch and even drove her over to the restaurant to meet us for lunch ... Thank you Cypress Trails!

I love this place! Everything about is good... All the rangers that take you out on the beautiful trails are awesome. They ask you how much you know so don't worry whether you are a pro or a beginner this is a great place to go ride. I purchased a block of lessons and use them when I want to.

I tried Cypress Trails over the summer and thoroughly enjoyed my experience!  Although it was hot, we were taken on highly shaded trails that kept us and the horses cool.  I never knew there were so many trails out there!  I definitely plan to go back.

I began riding here last Christmas and I had a blast! ... I'm hoping to go on to big things in the endurance riding world! Thanks Darolyn for everything! We are all like family out at cypress trails and all hope you come out to visit us one day!

It was my first time visiting Cypress Trails.  Great ranch. The horses looked well taken care of. The people around knew what to do, whether it is cleaning up, getting the horses ready, getting the riders ready, greeting them after the ride, etc. ... Definitely a place to visit if you are looking for trail rides, or training to be better rider.

Tour LBJ Ranch & the Texas White House

LBJ Ranch Tour

Texas White House  & LBJ Ranch

Tour the ranch, lbj ranch house, permanent exhibit gallery, lbj childhood home, johnson settlement, texas white house, hours & details, lbj ranch house tours.

From humble Texas beginnings, Lyndon Baines Johnson, the 36th U.S. President whose family immigrated to Texas as settlers, was raised near Johnson City in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. As president, his sweeping civil and human rights legislation transformed a nation, bringing it into a modern Space Age of scientific discovery, social reform, and economic stability.

But it is his early years on the ranch his family called home that will interest most travelers to Central Texas, a now-historic property that once served as a rural White House where heads of State from around the world would visit, eat barbecue on the lawn, fish and hunt and enjoy majestic sunrises and sunsets in a most magical part of the world.

From Austin , the LBJ Ranch, now a National Historic Landmark, is located about 40 west of the Capital City in the rolling hills between Johnson City and Stonewall – the peach capital of Texas.

President Johnson had a deep attachment to place and heritage. The LBJ Ranch was where he was born, lived, died, and was buried. After the President’s death in 1973, Mrs. Johnson continued to live at the Ranch part-time until her death in 2007.

Visitors are now able to tour the Ranch at their own pace in their private vehicles with the ability to stop at sites along the way such as the President’s birthplace, the Johnson family cemetery, and Johnson’s ranch house known as the Texas White House.

JBJ Ranch Audio Tour screenshot

The President and Mrs. Johnson donated their private home to the National Park Service but retained lifetime rights to use the house. Following the death of Mrs. Johnson on July 11, 2007, preparations have begun to make the home available for public tours. Individual rooms will be opened as they become ready.

President Johnson’s office (the west room) was opened to the public on the 100th anniversary of his birth, August 27, 2008. The living room and dining room were opened in June 2009. As part of the self-guided Ranch Tour, you may stop at the Texas White House for a ranger-guided tour.

The LBJ Ranch House is a historic house located in Stonewall, Texas. It was the home of President Lyndon B. Johnson from 1951 until his death in 1973 and it is now owned by the National Park Service. Built in 1885, this two-story limestone ranch house sits on over 200 acres overlooking the Pedernales River Valley and Hill Country. The grounds include formal gardens lined with native plants, wildflower meadows, oak groves, and a white-tailed deer preserve.

The house has been kept exactly as it was when LBJ lived there and features many of his personal effects like furniture from around the world and vintage artifacts from his presidential years.

In the Park Visitor Center, a permanent exhibit gallery showcases Lyndon Johnson’s life and accomplishments. It includes a world events timeline and a display depicting the highlights of LBJ’s Great Society programs. Some of the items on exhibit are campaign memorabilia, gifts that President Johnson gave, and two of the LBJ Ranch branding irons. There are also two “Friendship Stones,” concrete blocks signed by visitors to the Texas White House.

Also of interest is the childhood home of the President, he lived here from the age of five until his high school graduation in 1924. The home is furnished in the early to mid-1920s period and as such depicts a rural Texas lifestyle of 75 years ago.

Just down the road is the Johnson Settlement. Lyndon Johnson’s grandfather and great-uncle established a cattle droving headquarters in the 1860s on land that is now part of Johnson City, Texas. Their log cabin and subsequent barns, cooler house, and windmill still stand. There is also a modern exhibit center focusing on the cattle business, early Johnson family and settlement history, and Hill Country survival. A chuckwagon and longhorn cattle round out the “cowboy” atmosphere.

A self Guided Tour will next take you to The Texas White House, the part ranch building where the Johnsons lived. Visitors are now able to tour the Ranch at their own pace in their private vehicles with the ability to stop at sites along the way such as the President’s birthplace, the Johnson family cemetery, and Johnson’s ranch house known as the Texas White House.

The park is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. The National Park Visitor Center in Johnson City is open from 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The LBJ State Park visitor center, where LBJ Ranch tour permits are issued, is open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Guided tours of the LBJ Boyhood Home in Johnson City are offered seven days a week, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tours begin on the hour and half-hour, except at 12:00 p.m (noon) and 12:30 p.m. during which time the home is closed.

Self-guided tours of the Johnson Settlement, also in Johnson City, are available from 9:00 a.m. until sunset seven days a week. Costumed or ranger-guided interpretive tours of the Johnson Settlement are offered as staffing permits.

Self-guided driving tours of the LBJ Ranch near Stonewall are available beginning at 9:00 a.m. seven days a week. Driving Permits are given out at the LBJ State Park visitor center between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. The entrance gate at the LBJ Ranch opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 4:30 p.m.

Guided tours of the Texas White House, located on the LBJ Ranch, are offered 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

A visit to the LBJ Ranch House is truly a unique experience that allows visitors to explore the history of this great President. It’s a chance to appreciate the beauty of the Texas Hill Country and learn more about Lyndon B. Johnson, his accomplishments, and his legacy. With its several attractions like the ranch house, white house replica, nature trails, and more, everyone can find something interesting to do during their visit.
