B orn in the Bronx, New York, Ice Spice is a modern-day rapper who embarked on her musical journey in 2021. While studying at the State University Of New York, she met music producer, RiotUSA. In a December 2023 interview with Billboard, RiotUSA shared that he and Ice Spice are "mutual high school friends." He added that she welcomed him into "her creative space."

2021: early releases.

Ice Spice started making music in her early 20s and dropped a few songs with music producer RiotUSA in 2021. She began with Bully Freestyle, which was released in March. It was followed by a music video for No Clarity in November 2021.

2022: Viral Hit

She unveiled three songs in 2022, including Euphoric, Name Of Love, and Munch (Feelin' You), which went viral on X and TikTok.

Munch (Feelin' You) also made it to Billboard 's Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Songs in 2022, marking her first-ever RIAA-certified Gold plaque. The hit single was followed by Bikini Bottom, released in October 2022.

2022 was a busy year for Spice as she was featured on One Time by B-Lovee. Later that year, she signed a record deal with 10K Projects and Capitol Records.

2023: Releases EP

Ice Spice dropped her debut EP titled Like? on January 20, 2023, and included singles, namely Munch (Feelin' You), In Ha Mood, and Lil Tjay-assisted Gangsta Boo. Spice further solidified her position when five of her songs entered the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The only song that she has released so far in 2024 is Think U The Shit (Fart), which will appear with other singles in her upcoming album Y2K. Spice is currently on her Y2K World Tour and will make her last stop at the Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater on 31 August 2024.

Journey Preview New LP ‘Freedom’ With ‘You Got the Best of Me’

Journey ‘s new LP Freedom is arriving on July 8, and they’ve just shared their new single “You Got The Best of Me.”

“I wanted kind of a punky rendition of ‘Any Way You Want It’”, guitarist and Journey founder Neal Schon said in a statement. “I usually don’t go in saying I’m going to look for something like that, but then it just came to me, like “Wheel in the Sky” did years ago. It just kind of flew out of my mouth.”

Freedom is their first collection of original songs since 2011’s Eclipse . They created much of it during the pandemic, working at different studios from around the globe. “During the pandemic, there wasn’t much to do,” Schon said. “I spent a lot of time in my little studio at home, learning how to play keyboards and looping. Some of those ideas ended up being songs. So it kind of came out of nowhere.”

It’s also their first album since parting ways with founding bassist Ross Valory and longtime drummer Steve Smith following a business dispute over the band’s trademark. They were replaced by Raised On Radio -era bassist Randy Jackson and drummer Narada Michael Walden.

“It’s somewhat like the sound back in the Eighties when Randy Jackson joined the band for the Raised on Radio album,” frontman Arnel Pineda told Rolling Stone last year. “Narada is producing my vocals and mentoring me on how to do it. He’s telling me to sing it this way and that way. It’s amazing. I’m learning a lot from Narada. It’s truly an honor and I appreciate him for doing so. It’s amazing.”

Walden stepped away from Journey when they hit the road earlier this year. He was replaced by Deen Castronovo, who toured with the band from 1998 until 2015. Jackson plays bass on the album, but he hasn’t been on the road with them this year. Todd Jensen has been filling in for him.

Journey has been playing American arenas with Toto since late February. The set is heavy on their classic hits, but they did play new song “The Way We Used To Be” at some of the early shows. The tour wraps up May 16 in Quebec City, Canada. In July, they are playing a brief residency Resorts World in Las Vegas where they will be joined every night by a symphony.

In the longer term, a biopic about Arnel Pineda is in the works by Crazy Rich Asians director Jon Chu and Joker / The Fighter screenwriter Scott Silver. “I’ve spoken many times with Scott Silver,” Pineda told Rolling Stone last year. “What’s interesting about my story is that I’ve survived two coup attempts here in the Philippines before I went to Hong Kong for 10 years. I don’t know he if plans to tell what happened to me in Hong Kong, but I had 10 years there. He might focus on my love story with my wife now.”

He thinks the movie might end when he made his debut with Journey at a Chilean stadium gig in 2008. “I’ve been implying it to him that we should end everything in Chile,” Pineda said. “And I remember when my wife decided to join me on tour in 2011. We were playing to a 30,000 crowd that night. I was telling my wife, ‘Remember Hard Rock Cafe when there were only three tables? Now it’s 30,000 people.’ It was just unbelievable. It doesn’t get old to me. It’s still so surreal and bizarre.”

The arena rock anthems that came to define Journey’s sound worked especially well for the crowd gathered at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium Wednesday night, while Def Leppard’s raucous glam metal brought many to their feet and singing along. At first glance, the two acts might seem like an odd pairing to co-headline a tour, but they’ve had success in the past. On a tour of nearly 60 cities together in 2018, the bands sold more than 1 million tickets .

After opener Cheap Trick graced the stage, Journey came out swinging with “Only the Young” as singer Arnel Pineda — a vocal doppelgänger of former singer Steve Perry — skipped up and down the central runway that jutted out from the main stage, holding hands and fist bumping fans along the way. Neal Schon, the band’s co-founder and last original member still with the group, showed his charismatic smile and worked his way up and down his guitar neck with ease throughout the set.

The hits to follow sent waves of nostalgia through the audience, starting with the tender sounds of “Faithfully,” “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin'” and the power ballad “Open Arms,” which was prefaced by a touching piano solo from Jonathan Cain. Praise is also warranted for drummer Deen Castronovo, who had two kick drums, several cymbals and many toms at his disposal and used all of them liberally, rightfully so.

The band, now celebrating its 50th anniversary, picked up the energy with “Wheel in the Sky,” “Separate Ways” and “Any Way You Want It,” featuring soaring high notes from Pineda, who reached into the stratosphere with his vocal chords. Near the later part of the set, “Lights” had everyone in the crowd using their phone flashlight to illuminate the stadium.

Predictably, “Don’t Stop Believin'” was the appropriate set closer of the night, making for a jubilant sing-along with the crowd hanging onto every word. The band went out with a bang as streamers fell over the floor.

While the members of Journey have rotated and some have been replaced, what remains consistent is the passion behind the music and the songs that are beloved by many, as evidenced by the number of fans dancing and singing along. This reviewer is too young to remember when most of these songs were first released, but did grow up in a household where Journey was frequently played through the stereo, connected to a 300-disc carousel.

As crews worked to change over the instruments to prepare for Def Leppard, an on-screen countdown showed the exact number of minutes and seconds until the English rockers took to the stage. And rock, they sure did, coming out as lead singer Joe Elliott led the charge with “Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop).” Other hits early in the set included “Foolin’,” “Animal” and “Love Bites.”

In most songs, guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell deftly traded guitar solos and riffs from opposite sides of the stage. Joined by bassist Rick Savage, the musicians frequently combined their talents for three- and four-part harmonies. It was also impressive to watch drummer Rick Allen, who had his left arm amputated in 1985, navigate his way around the set and even take a solo at one point.

Def Leppard then brought fans a new song, “Just Like ’73,” which was released in 2024 but conjures memories from an era more than 50 years ago. The band brought the energy way down as Elliott appeared with just an acoustic guitar for “Two Steps Behind” and “This Guitar,” during which he was joined by his bandmates sans drums. It might have been a confusing moment for some, seeing such hard rockers as Def Leppard go stripped-down and acoustic for a few songs, but they came roaring back with electric guitars on full volume in the middle of “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak.”

It was a mad sprint to the finish after that as the band jammed on “Rock of Ages,” “Photograph,” “Hysteria” and their ever-popular hit, “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” which served as the closer. It was a hot, sticky sweet ending to an overcast and muggy, but always rocking and exciting, evening at Camping World Stadium.

Amazing tool, but app isn’t great

Let me start off by saying this tool is absolutely amazing for what it is and does. I used to be a professional musician, but had to set aside that lifestyle after having kids. After discovering Suno it opened up a whole world of possibilities and I have been able to begin composing music for the first time in a decade. I have written several songs utilizing Suno to write scratch tracks, and I’m highly impressed with the technology. However… the app isn’t great. Every time I use it, my phone ends up overheating. It also seems to struggle to load songs and song artwork. I’ve also had issues with the generator understanding the simple prompts I would feed it. Until those issues are fixed, particularly the overheating problem, I’ll be sticking to the website.

Amazing gift of music

Although neither musically adept nor tech-savvy, I'm loving this extraordinary app, which helps me create songs in seconds that fully capture--in wondrous lyrics, rich voices, and exquisite instrumentation--anything I might wish to express. Yesterday I tried creating music on the app for the first time, hoping to come up with a song that conveyed how much I miss a good friend living far away who I don't get to see very often. The song produced for me by Suno in less than a minute bordered on the miraculous--perfectly expressing my feelings through soulful instrumentation, a lovely female singing voice, and brilliant poetic lyrics. Shared with my friend, she too was deeply moved. I can already see how this ability to make beautiful music very quickly will become extremely addictive. I'm resolved to limit myself to creating no more than ten new songs per day--a lovely new ritual while enjoying my morning coffee. This morning, the new songs created included an r&b rendition of the mixed blessings of aging; an ode to walks in Central Park; and a mellow chastisement of a friend who's become too much of a recluse of late. Mind-blowing compositions each time! And so much fun!!

Country rapper and singer Shaboozey has plenty of reasons to celebrate right now. After Beyoncé included him as a guest artist on two songs from her album Cowboy Carter earlier this year, he used that clout to pull himself squarely into the limelight. And now he’s become a pathbreaker as a Black country artist, shaping his career on his own terms.

After months of simmering popularity and already having scaled Billboard 's Hot Country Songs chart, Shaboozey 's "A Bar Song (Tipsy)" has finally reached the peak of the Billboard Hot 100, making the Virginia singer the first Black male artist to have reached the highest rung on both charts. (The only other Black artist to do so is his collaborator Beyoncé , who achieved the same feat earlier this year with her song "Texas Hold 'Em.")

Since its release in April, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has been quietly but steadily making its way up the Top 10 to reach this apex. In Shaboozey's windup to this success, it's hard not to juxtapose his experiences as a Black country artist of Nigerian heritage to underheralded Black country artists of other generations, like the late Charley Pride and Linda Martell . Shaboozey’s breakthrough came when Beyoncé featured him on the songs “Sweet*Honey*Buckiin' ” and “Spaghettii” — the latter also featuring Martell.

While in 1966 Pride's record label made a point of sending out his music to radio stations with no promotional photos of him, Shaboozey's video trailer for his album Where I'm Going, Isn't Where I've Been takes direct aim at country music gatekeepers. (As Shaboozey told NPR's All Things Considered in May, "Music needs to change, and it needs to progress into different things," adding: "When you see my name and you see me, you're, like — you're kind of confused."

The rest of the Top 5 on the songs chart will undoubtedly be very familiar to chart watchers, with last week’s top song: Post Malone 's "I Had Some Help," featuring Morgan Wallen , at No. 2, Kendrick Lamar 's "Not Like Us" at No. 3, Sabrina Carpenter 's "Espresso" at No. 4 and Tommy Richman's "Million Dollar Baby" at No. 5. All of these songs have been hovering at or near the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for months — think of this chart like a heatwave with no end in sight.

The lone newcomer within the Top 10 is Chappell Roan 's "Good Luck, Babe!", which has finally cracked the upper echelon of the Billboard Hot 100. It now sits in 10th place, after having been on the chart for 13 weeks — another slow-burning success in the making, perhaps?

In case anyone had any doubts about the chart supremacy of Taylor Swift 's The Tortured Poets Department , its longevity speaks for itself. Now in its 11th week atop the Billboard 200 albums chart, Tortured Poets has matched two other Swift albums ( 1989 and Fearless ) for her longest-running albums at No. 1.

Meanwhile, Megan Thee Stallion 's latest album, Megan , enters the chart in the third spot, while Roan's The Rise and Fall of a Midwestern Princess has moved up one notch from last week to the fifth spot. Wallen's own chart fixture, One Thing at a Time (in its 70th week on the Billboard 200) held on at No. 2, and Billie Eilish 's Hit Me Hard and Soft stays at No. 4. That means that female artists have claimed four of the five top album spots, which is still a rare enough occurrence to be something of note. The last time so many female artists hit those heights was over a year ago, as Billboard observes .

A little further down, Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter returns to the Top 10 — springing up from last week's place at No. 50 to No. 10 — thanks to the release this week of a deluxe vinyl edition. ( Everybody is playing the " variant " game these days … even Bey.)

Worth noting

Here’s a Billboard chart with a particularly ungainly name: the Billboard Global Excl. US. Established just four years ago, it tracks the popularity of songs in 200 territories around the world, not including the U.S., by online sales and streaming.

Given the global homogeny of the music industry in 2024, this chart often looks quite a bit like its American and U.K. kin (Carpenter, Eilish, Hozier et al.) Occasionally, though, songs and artists pop up to remind us that there is still some room for more diffused tastes, even within the aesthetic confines of popular music.

This week's example of that is the success of the solo artist LISA, who debuted this week at No. 1 on this chart with her song "Rockstar."

LISA (whose stage name demands all capital letters) is a Thai-born rapper and singer who rocketed to worldwide fame as a member of the South Korean girl group BLACKPINK (again with the all caps). Still, she’s markedly less famous among American music fans: This week, "Rockstar" only went to No. 70 on the Billboard Hot 100, which measures sales, streams and radio play within the U.S.

But her visibility to American audiences may be on the upswing: It's just been announced that LISA will perform what is being billed as her first big American solo performance at the Global Citizen Festival in New York in September, joining a headliners lineup that also includes Post Malone and Doja Cat . Such an appearance doesn’t guarantee her mainstream success in the U.S., but it’s still a hat tip to her importance abroad.
