I have been waiting my whole life to see this show. What an perfect night it was to be in the pit. Jack is such a down to earth person; it was like the crowd was just hanging out with him and his band. He played all of his most popular songs and asked the crowd for requests quite a bit! He also played a couple of songs that he had been recently working on, a song he wrote about Willie Nelson, and a few songs with some neat instruments that they use in a lot of their songs (and of course, the accordian). I am so glad I was in the pit- tickets for seating were the same price! 100% of the proceeds for his merchandise sold at his shows (which is made of 100% organic cotton amd ink- and is extremely soft) is donated to charity, and his foundation. The Ohana Foundation is a large part of what is funded. This foundation funds children in need, primamrily. I know that Jack cares a lot about the environment, and carbon emission offsets were used in part of ticket fees as well. His stage decor included sea trash in strung-up lighted mason jars! How cool. Apparently, between the opener (the Bahamas), Jack was hanging out at a booth, playing some songs (which, sadly, I missed). What I would do to meet Jack and talk to him about my passion for the environment! Not to mention, his voice was perfect, and you could tell how much fun he and his bandmates (friends) were having. It was surely a night to remember ("do you remember?") :) thanks for the love, Jack. Until next time! Glad I could be part of kicking off your first tour in awhile with you. <3

Born and raised in Hawaii, it’s no real surprise Jack Johnson is such a chiller. But there’s a unique delicacy and warmth to his soft, acoustic rock that has justifiably shot him to stardom, and melted hearts the world over in the process.

Forced out of the water by a surfing accident at the age of 17, Johnson soon found refuge behind a guitar, with his early life experiences crafting his sundrenched, tender and youthful sound. Indeed, it’s the honesty and transparency of his music that makes an evening with Jack Johnson so special. Often found on stage solo, just man and guitar, Jack’s charming music breeds intimacy - making the world’s largest arenas feel like the smallest beach huts. Like a good pina colada, Jack Johnson is best enjoyed with friends, so grab some buddies and head for the front row for a good singalong!

Over the course of seven records, Johnson’s trajectory has seen him headline festivals across the globe, but, admirably, his connection to Hawaii has always remained strong. A strong involvement in the Kokua Festivals helped raise funds and awareness for environmental education in Hawaii, whilst in April 2012 Jack set out on a seven date tour of the Hawaiian islands. Right on, Jack.

A Beautiful night, Jack is always a great experience you don't want to miss.

The simple melodies set your soul at ease. The band played all the favorites with just a touch of the new album. The arrangements flowed beautifully. Jack not only sings his story, He shares them so intimately during the show, you want to invite his family to dinner! They spoke briefly about Keeping our oceans free of plastic and the lovely display of lights that surrounded the crowd and stage, are actually small pieces of plastic found in the ocean he surfs in Hawaii. The band is always warm and engaging. The Bahamas Joined the guys on stage for a beautiful tribute to Tom Petty. Amazing night under the full moon. Thanks Jack!

This is the fourth time I have seen Jack live and he never

disappoints me. This time I was able to take my 8 year old daughter which made the experience all the more enjoyable and meaningful.

This was a great show. Jack brought the energy and engaged the audience very well. I liked his setlist and was happy he did not play many songs from his forthcoming album as the audience wouldn't have known those songs.

My only complaint is the general admission format. It penalizes people who have to come from work and gives them no chance to get a good seat. In fact, we had to rush to get there just to make sure we would have any seat at all.

I went both nights. I feel bad for the people who only got to see the first show. Don't get me wrong, but Friday was a 2 1/2 hour wonderful love fest performance and was absolutely phenomenal. Jack dissed the Thursday crowd early, referencing the lack of crowd support singing/involvement, then tried to backtrack...didn't work. My suggestion is to sing loud and you'll get the great show...sit on your hands and you're going home early.

This was the sweetest most laid back concert I've been to. I loved every second of it! A lot of people(including some friends of mine) arrived late due to traffic, so at the end he came back out to play more music for them. I love how much he loves the ocean, nature, and just people in generalm. I would recommend his concerns to anyone! <3

This was one of the best shows in my life. Jack Johnson brought out all the major hits in the form of medleys at the beginning. The artwork in the background was mind blowing. The rest of the band was great as expected and greater by improvising and making well known songs slightly different for a live scenario. Wow!

Great summer concert! Jack Johnson played all his best music, brought out special guests and friends to play some of their own original music, covered a few songs, notably Sublime's Badfish and Boss DJ, and also brought out the opening act, Lake Street Dive, during his encore.

Jack was amazing as usual. He was made to perform live, and he and his band are so talented. Best concert I've been to, fun for all ages. This venue was perfect for him and it was all good vibes. Great sound and good views from all seats. Would love to see him again!

Jack Johnson has announced details of his new studio album Meet The Moonlight and shared the first single from it, “One Step Ahead.”

The record will be the singer-songwriter’s eighth album and first full-length release in five years. It was produced by Blake Mills and recorded at LA’s Sound City and EastWest, and Johnson’s own studio The Mango Tree in Hawaiʻi.

“One Step Ahead” finds Johnson tackling how communication has changed since the advent of social media. “We’re at a point where human nature hasn’t changed but the technology around us has changed dramatically, and it’s getting to this dangerous place where the most extreme and sensationalized opinions have the potential to be heard by so many people,” he explained.

“That line in the chorus [‘ Never mind all the noise going through your head ’] is about trying to breathe through the noise and get to a calmer place, which seems important when we’re seeing a lot of friends lose trust and grow away from each other because they disagree over some issue or another.”

Jack Johnson - One Step Ahead (Lyric Video)

The star’s new album marks a major artistic milestone from past work, taking shape from a one-on-one collaboration with Mills (whose contributions included everything from fretless guitar to Moog synth to steel drums) and unveiled an intimate and highly experimental process that involved embedding Johnson’s elegantly stripped-back arrangements with enchanting sonic details.

“When Blake and I first got in touch we’d send each other playlists, and over time we realized we were drawn to music that sounds effortless despite all the effort put into making it,” said Johnson. “After a while, we got a language together and I gained a trust in him that allowed me to let go, push outside my comfort zone, and get to a sound I really loved.”

The acclaimed, award-winning artist has also announced a special performance to take place on Earth Day (April 22), which will be held at the Kōkua Learning Farm – an educational and agricultural destination located in the heart of Haleʻiwa, Hawaiʻi. The farm is part of the latest project of Johnson’s Kōkua Hawaiʻi Foundation which is establishing agricultural, educational, and retail activities that promote local food, waste reduction, and environmental stewardship.

Fans can tune into the intimate set on Johnson’s social media channels on Earth Day, with times and additional details to be announced soon.

Later this year, Johnson will hit the road for a 35-date summer tour, with more shows added in several locations due to demand. All net proceeds earned through Platinum and Premium ticketing programs will be donated to the Johnson Ohana Foundation to support All At Once Non-Profit Partners at each concert. In addition, $2 from every ticket will support the environment, with half being directed to carbon offset projects and the other half to support the All At Once Non-Profit Partners and their environmental projects, plastic-free initiatives, and food security efforts. Many of Jack Johnson’s songs are soft and lilting, but he credits being periodically fatalistic as a key to his now 21-year-long music career.

“I have to trick myself into thinking every album is my last one,” said the professional surfer-turned-singer-songwriter.

“I find I write better when I’m not thinking about performing — or when I’m thinking that people may not ever hear the songs I’m writing.”

Achieving such a state of mind may be a challenge for this Hawaii native.

Since the release of his 2001 debut, “Brushfire Fairytales,” Johnson’s worldwide album sales have topped the 25 million mark.

He has headlined such major festivals as Coachella, Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, Ohana, and San Diego’s now apparently defunct KAABOO.

Fans surround the Grandview Stage as KAABOO Del Mar. The five-year-old festival was sold to Virgin Fest on Wednesday, Sept. 18.

His concert tours see him performing in outdoor venues with capacities of 15,000 to 20,000, such as Chula Vista’s North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre, where Johnson performs with his band next Friday.

Jack Johnson performs July 2, 2022 in Clarkston, Michigan.

First tour in 5 years

“Sometimes, if I’m not careful, I can take it for granted,” said the 47-year-old troubadour and happily married father of three.

“Going on tour now, for the first time in five years, is a reminder that it’s a pretty special thing to sing songs — with my friends in my band — and present them to an audience that appreciates hearing them.”

One of those special songs is “Better Together,” the euphonious love ballad featured on Johnson’s third album, 2005’s “In Between Dreams.”

“A lot of people have shared with me that they used that song for their weddings,” he said. “Or that some of my songs remind them of a road trip they took. I know how that feels because I’m such a big music fan myself.”

The soothing, islands-flavored folk and soft-rock songs that propelled Johnson into the spotlight are a far cry from the punk rock he played in his teens as a member of the Oahu band Limber Chicken. At the time, he was a fan of such incendiary post-hardcore acts as Fugazi and Minor Threat.

But he also grew up hearing records by his parents’ favorite artists, from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Neil Young and Cat Stevens. And such Johnson songs as “I Tend to Digress” and “3 A.M. Reunion” — both from his inviting new album, “Meet the Moonlight” — suggest he is quite conversant with the music of Paul Simon. (Perhaps not coincidentally, Simon & Garfunkel’s 1964 debut album was entitled “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.”)

“I love Paul Simon!” Johnson said. “I don’t tend to intentionally try (to sound like other artists), but I’ve listened to enough Paul Simon where it makes a lot of sense that you can hear his influence.

“With ‘3 a.m. Reunion,’ I was listening to a lot of JJ Cale. It’s funny; sometimes, what you’re shooting for doesn’t come out and another influence will, like Paul Simon.”

Cale, who died in 2013, was a longtime resident of the northern San Diego County community of Valley Center.

Cale’s deceptively laid-back songs, which mixed country, blues, rock, swing and more, were models of restraint and concision. His music influenced everyone from Neil Young and Eric Clapton to Mark Knopfler and Beck.

“My band and my friends send a lot of playlists to each other,” said Johnson, who also traded playlists with Blake Mills, the producer of “Meet the Moonlight.”

Speaking by phone from his oceanfront home on Oahu, Johnson broke into a verse from Cale’s unabashedly romantic 1976 song, “Cherry.”

“A friend and I were talking about how cool some of the lyrics, instrumental layers and background vocals on ‘Cherry’ are,” Johnson elaborated. “Sometimes, we’ll have playlists that focus on guitar tones, or a specific atmosphere people create, like a (pretty) song by a band that was known for being dissonant, like Velvet Underground.”

Released in June, “Meet the Moonlight” is Johnson’s eighth studio album. It is his first with Mills, an electric guitar wizard whose previous production credits range from Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes and Perfume Genius to John Legend, Marcus Mumford and San Diego’s Sara Watkins.

Johnson credits Mills with pushing him out of his comfort zone and encouraging spontaneity while recording together. Although Johnson’s band members perform on “Meet the Moonlight,” most of the instrumentation on the album is provided by Johnson and Mills, who also provides many of the background vocals.

“We did a lot of things in tandem,” Johnson said, “(including) playing two guitars at once. For the percussion parts, it was sometimes like a race for instruments in the studio, instead of discussing ‘What about this idea?’ or ‘What about that idea?’

“And we were both good about admitting the other person’s ideas were as good as our own.”

Blake Mills at the 2022 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island.

Recording and ping pong

That doesn’t mean he and Mills weren’t competitive, be it while recording in Hawaii and Hollywood, or playing table tennis in between recording sessions.

“Using that metaphor, neither of us cared too much about winning our Ping-Pong games,” Johnson replied. “But it was a lot of fun to play — and it was the same in the studio ... It was always a fun argument, where I liked the challenge, not of the winning the argument but coming up with the best line of argument.”

The 10-song “Meet the Moonlight” clocks in at a compact 35 minutes. It is not a dramatic departure from Johnson’s previous albums but a subtle one, with some of his lyrics expressing a new sense of moral ambiguity that reflect the increasingly uncertain times in which we live.

Mills adds sonic dimension to the album with unexpected tonal textures and ambient touches, which are felt in the music as much as heard.

“After a certain point I started to go along with Blake’s ideas, even when they weren’t my natural instincts,” Johnson said. “Like, for example, regarding a guitar tone or the BPM (beats per minute) of a song where he slowed it down from where I was.

“I realized he’s really good at making albums and that, sometimes, that’s a different thing than just writing a song. So, it was fun for me to start off thinking one thing (about a song) and then be convinced otherwise by someone I have a lot of respect for.”

Johnson laughed.

“We were coming at it in a funny way,” he recalled of his collaboration with Mills.

“We’d argue about really dumb things — not argue, but debate. One day, we tried to decide if there was always ‘now,’ or if ‘now’ is only now. I was like: ‘It could only be one or the other.’ And Blake was like: ‘No, both are true.’ ”

Mills also encouraged Johnson to leave in recording “mistakes,” such as the mildly jarring sound heard near the beginning of the song “Costume Party.”

“You know what that is?” Johnson said, sounding like a giddy teenager. “I don’t want give away secrets, but there were little contact microphones on a cymbal next to me to get reverb. I was singing close to cymbal and (my vocal microphone) was picking up the reverb.

“I said: ‘Can you take that part out?’ And Blake said: ‘It’s great! Leave it in.’ It’s easy to edit all the life out of a song.”

Another unexpected twist in the melancholic “Costume Party” comes with its instrumentation. Johnson performs, in a manner, on beer bottles. He does so by taking a sip and then blowing into the bottles to create a descending bass line that was modeled after the 1969 Led Zeppelin classic, “Dazed and Confused.”

“I told Blake about the beer bottles idea,” Johnson recounted. “And he said: ‘Let’s try it’ (on the record). Because ‘Costume Party’ is meant to be a song about the after-party and a metaphor about how, at this point in your life, you feel comfortable enough to take off a little of your costume.

“We were talking about (post-concert) after-parties backstage, where a friend is blowing in a beer bottle — and thinking they are killing it — and they don’t realize how discordant it is.”

Rory McIlroy's 25th PGA Tour win is by far his least impressive

R ory McIlroy just won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans to reach 25 career PGA Tour victories and jump Gary Player and Dustin Johnson on the all-time wins list, but hardly anyone cares.

As you may know, the Zurich Classic is a team event in which duos compete in alternating formats of fourball and foursomes. It's not a premier event on the PGA Tour schedule — as evidenced by the weak field — and it's not an arduous tournament to win if both teammates play well. The Zurich Classic is more about having fun with your buddy than anything else, so there isn't the same pressure associated with signature events and major championships.

No wonder McIlroy played so well.

The McIlroy-Shane Lowry tandem fired an 11-under 61 in the fourball format to begin the tournament. They followed that up with a 2-under 70 in foursomes, an 8-under 64 in fourball and a 4-under 68 in foursomes. The Irish team still needed to take down the powerhouse duo of Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff, which they did with an unimpressive par on the par-5 18th hole. Ramey and Trainer, who rank 235th and 395th in the Official World Golf Ranking, respectively, slapped the ball all over the 18th hole and limped to a bogey.

A win is a win, sure, but it would've been humiliating if McIlroy and Lowry hadn't held on in the final round. The rest of the top-10 finishers included names such as Ryan Brehm (World No. 538), Patrick Fishburn (World No. 331) and Nicolas Echavarria (World No. 293) — not exactly the Scottie Scheffler's or Jon Rahms of the world.

The victory ended an eight-month winless drought for McIlroy, but it's hard to file this in the same category as his other 24 PGA Tour wins. This is McIlroy's first team win in his PGA Tour career and his first victory on U.S. soil since the 2022 Tour Championship.

This team win can't mask the fact that McIlroy hasn't won a major since the 2014 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Course. The good news? The 2024 PGA Championship is coming up next month, and it's being held at Valhalla for the first time since McIlroy's triumph 10 years ago.

McIlroy can win all the Zurich Classics he wants; golf fans still won't be impressed until he finally wins major No. 5.
