Shipping Times

We aim to process and dispatch your order as fast as possible. While in most cases this will happen within 24-72 hours, it can take up to 5 business days, depending on what is ordered. In some cases, like during peak season and holiday periods, it may take longer. Shipping and processing times are a guide only, not a guarantee.

An order containing multiple items with different shipping times will by default ship on the timeframe of the slowest item, however, Gearshop reserves the right to split ship orders where we feel it is required.

After dispatch, delivery is normally overnight within the South Island and 1-3 business days within the North Island. Rural addresses could take up to an additional 2-4 business days. At this time, we do not offer urgent delivery as a standard freight option, however if you require your order urgently, please contact us before ordering to ensure that we can meet your delivery timeframe. We aim to deliver your order within the following timeframes:

  • North Island: 3-7 business days
  • North Island rural: 3-7 business days
  • Waiheke Island: 4-8 business days
  • South Island: 2-6 business days
  • South Island rural: 2-6 business days
  • Chatham Islands: 7-10 business days
  • Oversized or heavy items: 5-7 business days to all NZ addresses (excluding Chatham islands)

Australia : 7–10 business days (metropolitan areas only).

Canada : 10 business days

Hong Kong : 10 business days

UK/Ireland : 10 business days

USA : 10 business days

Every now and then, life throws a curveball and deliveries might take a little longer. We're doing our best to get your goods to you ASAP. If you've got any questions about your order, just give us a shout.

We're actually pretty speedy most of the time. After dispatch, around 92% of our orders zoom to your door within 5 days. In the South Island 79% of those arrive in 2 days. And for the North Island 85% of orders make it in 5 days.  We're always keeping a watchful eye on freight times to ensure the best experience for our customers.  Watch this space for our full freight review.

Usually, your stuff should reach you within the expected time. However, no need to stress if it takes a little longer than 5 days, occasionally things don't go exactly to plan. If you need something super soon and it's less than 6 days before your desired delivery date, just chat with us before ordering.

Keep in mind, we can't give refunds for delays beyond our control or if you've ordered last-minute without letting us know. We're all about making things smooth, so drop us a line if you're unsure.

Kindly note that if a package happens to go missing, Gearshop won't be able to offer a replacement or refund if the courier can provide evidence of delivery.  Important note: If you haven't received your order within 7 days of your Shipping Confirmation email, please let us know right away so that we can follow up with the courier.  Due to courier policies, we are unable to accept claims for non delivery, loss or damage after 12 days from shipping.

All items being returned MUST be accompanied by a covering letter detailing your request and your full contact details and return address.

We do not offer refunds for change of mind, we can however exchange or provide a non-expiring store credit by way of website voucher, in the event that you do not want an exchange item immediately.

Are there items that I can't exchange or return?

Yes, there are a few exceptions to our exchange and return policy. Please note the following:

Climbing Equipment and Technical Height Safety Equipment: All purchases in this category are considered final and cannot be exchanged or credited, unless a warranty replacement or repair is required under consumer law.

Equipment Intended for Life Support: For your safety, we cannot accept returns or exchanges on any equipment intended for life support.

Gift Cards: Gift card purchases are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged.

Additionally, please be aware that we are unable to exchange or refund products that were purchased on clearance pricing or heavily discounted (30% or more off). We encourage you to carefully review your selection before making such purchases.

However, we do want to ensure your satisfaction with our products, which is why we offer a 7-day exchange period for climbing helmets, specifically for sizing purposes. Similarly, rock shoes come with a 14-day exchange window for sizing adjustments.

For any other inquiries or to initiate a return or exchange within our policy guidelines, please feel free to contact our customer support team. We're here to assist you and ensure you have the best experience with our products.

The 5 Best Ultralight Sleeping Bags for Staying Warm and Saving Weight

Save packing space and weight—but still keep warm—with these minimalist sleeping bags..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

Sleeping bags are an essential piece of backpacking gear, but they can also be one of the main culprits for ballooning your pack size and weight. If you want to slim down your kit , consider an ultralight sleeping bag. These bags weigh about 2 pounds or lighter and compress down to miniscule size in a stuff sack, so they won’t sit like a rock at the bottom of your backpack. Just because a bag is ultralight doesn’t mean you’ll sleep cold in it, though: The five models below will keep you warm in three-season conditions, all while taking up less space than a traditional sleeping bag.

What to Consider When Purchasing an Ultralight Sleeping Bag

First, make sure that you’ll be comfortable with the dimensions of an ultralight model. None of the bags below—except for the Big Agnes Torchlight UL—are exceptionally roomy; they each have a mummy silhouette, which means less space than more spacious (and heavier) models. Next, make sure that the price is right for you: Most ultralight bags are expensive, although many hikers will argue that the weight-savings are worth the outlay. Finally, make sure that you’re targeting the right temperature comfort rating. A 20°F-rated bag will usually work for three seasons in the high mountains of the western U.S. and beyond, depending on your personal sleeping warmth preferences. (if you sleep colder, consider a 15°F model). A 30°F model can get you through three seasons most elsewhere in the country.

After you’ve thought about the above, take a look at the features of the ultralight sleeping bags you’re considering. Each company has its own take on hoods, draft collars and tubes, zippers, lining material, and other design elements. Some may work for you, while some may not. Once you’ve pinpointed which combination of features, size, and temp rating are best for you, it’s time to dial in a major part of your ultralight sleep system.

Best Ultralight Sleeping Bags on the Market

Therm-a-Rest Hyperion 20

Lightest: Therm-a-Rest Hyperion 20°F

  • Price: $500
  • Weight: 1 lb. 4 oz.

If you’re ruthless about cutting weight, you’ll like the Hyperion . It’s one of the lightest models in this temp category, thanks to a narrow, heat-saving shape (shoulder circumference is 57 inches), a half-length zipper, and 900-fill goose down. It packs down to the size of a honeydew and kept us warm on an 18°F night in the Pyrenees. Even the price—well below the competition—is ruthless. Features-wise, the Hyperion has enough to keep sleepers happy. Its hydrophobic down stayed lofty on a rainy night in Wyoming when one editor’s tent failed, and the hood snugs tight with a single cinch. The 10-denier nylon lining isn’t luxurious, but it’s definitely soft enough. Side sleepers take note: The bag puts most of the down on top; if you roll and pull the bag with you, you’ll feel the cold sneak in. The zipper also snags and its half length isn’t ideal for warmer nights. “But that’s common in this category and a small price to pay for a bag I can fit in my cookpot,” one ultralighter says. — Eli Bernstein

Big Agnes Torchlight UL 20

Roomiest: Big Agnes Torchlight UL 20°F

  • Price: $420
  • Weight: 2 lbs. 2 oz.

Warm summer nights turn three-season mummies into boil-in-bag situations, while cool fall nights make for shiverfests in summer-weight bags. Who knew that all we needed to bridge the gap between the two was an extra pair of long zippers? Opening the zips on the sides of the Torchlight releases two baffles of down-filled fabric, expanding the typical 60-inch circumference of a mummy bag to 70 inches (a separate head-to-toe zipper opens the bag itself). Use the additional space for elbow room or to accomodate a puffy on colder nights, like our tester did with temps in the teens in the Eastern Sierra. Bonus: Even with the extra zips the 850-fill down sack still packs smaller than a soccer ball. The Torchlight’s hood fits snugly, like a puffy jacket’s, and retains heat so well— even without being fully cinched—that one of our testers ditched his usual nighttime beanie at the temp limit. — William R. Rochfort, Jr.

NEMO Kayu 30

Best Features: NEMO Kayu 30°F

  • Price: $350
  • Weight: 1 lb. 12 oz.

For nights when you’re tucked into alpine boulder fields or cowboy camping on abrasive ground, the Kayu turns unlikely terrain into home. This bag’s DWR-treated, 20-denier ripstop nylon shell works with a 30-denier interior liner chosen for its silky finish. When we bivvied below 14,259-foot Longs Peak in Colorado, neither rocks nor sticks penetrated the footbox shell, which is enhanced with 40-denier nylon. On that near-freezing night, we stayed warm while we admired the stars thanks to the bag’s 800-fill down. Designers tweaked the previous iteration to widen the shoulder circumference one inch (the men’s version has a 63-inch girth; the women’s is 59 inches) and narrowed the hips two inches (55 inches for men, 52 for women), minimizing dead space while maintaining wiggle room. When temps rose above 40°F while we camped outside Moab, Utah, we opened NEMO’s signature thermo-gills (two zippered ventilation strips running 21 inches down the bag’s core, exposing just the inner lining) and never felt clammy. — Emma Athena

Feathered Friends Egret YF

Best Fit for Women: Feathered Friends Egret YF 20°F

  • Price: $409
  • Weight: 1 lb. 13 oz.

We find women tend to run cold in unisex bags; the Egret YF’s female-specific design delivered trustworthy performance every time we slept in it. After a long day, 28°F temperatures in camp above 10,000 feet at Timberline Lake in Colorado’s Holy Cross Wilderness were no match for the bag’s 900-fill down. Crawling into this lofty—but not bulky—bag is like slipping into a personal relaxation chamber. With 54 inches of girth around the shoulder and 56 inches around the hips, there’s plenty of room in the midsection and a little less space in the shoulders when compared to traditional unisex bags. The nylon taffeta lining has a hand soft against skin on the most humid nights, and a larger-than-average draft tube shadows the full-length zipper and blocks cold spots. Our female testers also appreciated the warmth provided by extra down stuffed into both the footbox and torso—areas where women typically run colder than men—while The women’s-specific sizing reduced dead space. The shell’s 20-denier, DWR-treated ripstop nylon (burlier than most tested) is stitched with Y-shaped threads that interlock when woven together, helping maintain its durability and weatherproofing even after repeated use and washing. The 900-fill down can compress to the size of a loaf of bread, and weighs less than 2 pounds for maximum portability. — EA

Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass 30

Best Value: Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass 30°F

  • Price: $235

At just shy of 2 pounds and less than $250, the Bishop Pass is light on your back and your wallet. Its 650-fill, water-repellent down isn’t as lofty as higher fill powers, but it keeps the bag budget-friendly and compresses to the size of a bike helmet—perfect for packing alongside a week’s worth of gear in a 60-liter pack, as we did for a 62-mile trek in Wyoming’s Wind River Range . When temperatures hovered around freezing at the base of 13,804-foot Gannett Peak , we slept soundly. “The only downside is how shallow the hood is,” one tester says—when the hood wasn’t cinched, her makeshift clothing pillow slipped out; when it was cinched, there wasn’t enough room for the pillow and her head. There’s also no risk of a close-quarters freak-out in this mummy: Above-average 62-inch shoulder and 53-inch hip girths for men, and 60-inch shoulder and 50-inch hip girths for women, leave room for sleeping in any position. (It can create cold spots for more petite frames, though.) During an unexpected midnight drizzle in the Winds, the DWR-treated, 20-denier ripstop nylon fended off droplets falling through a faulty tent fly. “Moisture inside the tent didn’t soak in,” our tester says. — EA

What a Backpacker Editor Looks for in an Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Hiker in Canyon

Eli Bernstein, Senior Gear Editor

“Most ultralight bags meet my goals for weight and packability, so I look for the ones with the highest comfort factor. That means large hoods, full-length zippers, and soft liner material. This may up the weight just a little bit compared to the most minimalist of sleeping bags, but the nexus of ultralight and a good night’s sleep is where I want to fall, rather than just prioritizing packability.”

Skier smiling at the camera

Adam Roy, Senior Digital Editor

“I’m pretty cold-blooded, so when I’m choosing a sleeping bag, warmth is king. I want my bag to live up to its temperature rating without me having to pull any shenanigans—hiding a hot water bottle in my footbox, wearing extra layers to bed, et cetera. If it can do that, I’m willing to forgive design oversights like finicky zippers, overly gossamer fabrics, and snug cuts.”

How to Maintain an Ultralight Sleeping Bag

After each trip, hang and air-dry your bag to get rid of lingering condensation. Store it via hanging or in a large mesh stuff sack (most bags come with these); do not store a sleeping bag in a small stuff sack or a compression sack, which will make it lose its loft. All of the bags above are filled with down, which you can wash with down-specific detergents in a front-loading washing machine. Dry your sleeping bag on low, and put three or four tennis balls in the dryer to re-loft the down.

The Best Ultralight Sleeping Bags

  • Best Overall: Rab Mythic Ultra 180
  • Best Value: REI Co-op Magma 30
  • Most Affordable: Kelty Cosmic 20
  • Best for Bikepacking: Western Mountaineering Flylite
  • Best for Warm Weather: Marmot Micron 40

What to Consider

Ultralight sleeping bags weigh about 2 pounds and compress into small sizes to occupy as little space as possible. The low weight of these sleeping bags generally correlates with the cost. So if you’re not looking to spend a few hundred dollars on a new bag, opt for a slightly heavier one to save money.

If you need a thru-hiking bag, lean toward one that can fit into a small stuff sack. Most ultralight bags come with their own, so you can stow the sack in a backpack pocket or dangle them from a carabiner (if you’re brave enough to taunt the weather on an overnight hike). The bags are usually tapered dramatically at the feet to save on weight, and to make you extra warm by keeping the insulation close to your body.

This is an image

You can afford to skew heavier if you’re just hoping to lighten your load-out when car camping or packing for a single overnight hike. Plenty of bags that weigh 4 pounds or less are plenty light for these purposes, and they save costs at the expense of a bit of extra weight—but if you’re going to be thru-hiking for several days or weeks, the lighter, the better.

Note that some cheaper options don’t include stuff sacks or other compact-friendly features.

Warmth Rating

Not all sleeping bags are built for all-season use. To consider what climates a sleeping bag is best in, check its temperature rating. This indicates the lowest tested temperature at which the bag can keep the average person comfortable.

Most sleeping bags show their temperature rating directly in their product name. For example, Big Agnes’s Pluton 40 suits temperatures down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Some brands offer the same model in various temperature ratings, which is the case for the Sea to Summit’s Ember Down Quilt , available for temps as low as 50, 35, and 25 degrees. Generally speaking, the lower the temperature rating, the higher the price.

Fill power indicates the quality of down (usually light, fluffy clusters of ducks or waterfowl) inside of a sleeping bag or coat. Down is a natural, lightweight, and breathable material that allows birds to warm themselves—and it makes great insulation for humans, too. The fill power number conveys how many cubic inches of insulation 1 ounce of that down fill produces. For the purposes of sleeping bags, the higher the fill number, the better the insulation.

It’s important to note that down compresses and packs down better than synthetic insulation, but synthetic insulation still warms even when it gets wet—down does not. If your sleeping bag is made with synthetic materials, it may lack the springiness of natural down and offer less warmth in extreme temperatures than the natural stuff. Moreover, synthetic insulation is often heavier than down. That said, plenty of synthetic options, like PrimaLoft, are perfectly acceptable for the average outdoors enthusiast.

Sleeping bags are made with nylon or polyester—or sometimes a blend of both—as they’re durable and water-resistant. Shells are also often treated with a durable water repellent, or DWR, finish to further protect against moisture. Synthetics have moisture-wicking and insulating properties , making them versatile for a range of conditions.

Synthetic fabrics used for outdoor gear are often ripstop, a textile weaving technique that provides materials with abrasion resistance. Ripstop fabrics have a visible grid-like pattern of thick, reinforced threads that protect against snags and scratches—sort of like wired glass. While ripstop doesn’t make a piece of clothing or gear invincible, it certainly helps lengthen the lifespan of a product and prevents ripping open your sleeping bag with your camping knife or a sharp tree branch.

How We Selected

To identify the best ultralight sleeping bags, relied on personal testing experience (Which sleeping bags is our staff familiar with? What brands do we love?), trying a few out for a few nights in the woods, and analyzing materials and accessibility. We also considered frequently recommended products from camping subreddits and buyer’s guides by authorities in outdoor equipment. We found the best ultralight sleeping bags across a range of budgets, temperature ratings, weights, functions (hoods, ventilation, interior pockets), and materials.

Rab Mythic Ultra 180 Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Mythic Ultra 180 Ultralight Sleeping Bag

At 14.1 ounces, Rab’s Mythic Ultra 180 is the lightest sleeping bag on this list. It’s also the most expensive.

The 7-denier shell and liner help cut down on weight where it matters, while its down is finished with a hydrophobic treatment that helps retain its loft should it take on moisture. The Mythic Ultra 180 also uses heat-reflective technology, accomplished by coating each fiber in titanium, thus bouncing a user’s warmth inside the sleeping bag and retaining heat longer.

This ultralight sleeping bag stuffs into a cotton sack when not in use, which may be a turn-off for those who look for mesh to air out their bags. It may be overkill for those looking for a casual car camping bag, but its incredible components, chunky collar, and oversized hood are enough for ultralight mountaineers and light backpackers.

REI Co-op Unisex Magma 30 Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Unisex Magma 30 Ultralight Sleeping Bag

REI Co-op’s Magma 30 sports a fitted, mummy-style silhouette with plenty of knee and foot space and a contoured hood that leaves space for a pillow.

Sitting in the middle of our cheapest and most expensive options, the Magma 30 has a durable, water-resistant lining stuffed with 850-fill-power goose down. Its foot box can also accommodate large feet. As of spring 2024, REI has made the Magma 30 a unisex sleeping bag, giving you several options for sizes, including wide and narrow fits and short and long lengths.

Packed up and compressed, this sleeping bag stuffs into a 2.6-liter sack and weighs roughly 1 pound and 8.4 ounces, depending on length and size. Users love previous models of this bag for its weight, price, and shell material, which one REI customer calls “soft and silent.” Some say, however, the Magma 30 is best fit for 40-degree weather and is great for warm sleepers.

The Magma 15 is also available for colder nights at an extra $50 and a few more ounces.

Big Agnes Pluton 40 UL Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Pluton 40 UL Ultralight Sleeping Bag

The Pluton 40 is an ultralight, highly compressible sleeping bag that packs down into a stuff sack that’s just 5 by 6 inches. It’s also the quietest on this list, with many critical reviews pointing out that its materials barely make a sound when they roll around or unravel the bag. This is great for those who move a lot at night.

The bag is made with 850-fill water-repellent down, which, along with the cinched hood that wraps around your head, keeps you warm. Best of all, the two-way zipper lets you close the hood as you fall asleep and open it back up for temperature regulation as needed.

Kelty Cosmic 20 Ultralight Sleeping Bag (Men’s)

Cosmic 20 Ultralight Sleeping Bag (Men’s)

Kelty’s Cosmo 20, at less than $200, is one of the cheapest ultralight sleeping bags. Available in regular, long, and short lengths, this 550-fill-power down bag has a draft collar and a hood to keep cold air out and a roomy foot box to allow air to circulate between your toes. It also has a zippered stash pocket to store your book or headlamp while you sleep.

The 20-denier nylon shell and 50-denier polyester liner give it heft compared to other bags on this list, making it heavier at 2 pounds and 7 ounces. But users love this product for its no-frills design and straightforward mummy silhouette, saying it’s well worth its budget price and it keeps you warm.

Western Mountaineering Flylite Ultralight Sleeping Bag

Flylite Ultralight Sleeping Bag

A frequent recommendation for those who go bikepacking during the warm months, the Flylite sleeping bag is a supremely lightweight quilted bag that tightly packs down for stowing on your bike’s rear rack or pannier. (One critic review says it packs down to the size of a Nalgene.) Its zipper goes down to the toe box, so you can ventilate your feet and stay comfy, and its down is warm enough for cool nights. Although it’s rated for three seasons, many critic reviews say it’s best for two—spring and summer.

It’s fairly pricey, but if you can swing the Flylite, it’ll do you good on your next tour, taking up minimal space. Some reviews say it requires constant readjusting, however, as the inner down clusters easily shift out of place within the baffles, which can create cold spots.

Marmot Micron 40 Ultralight Sleeping Bag (Men’s)

Micron 40 Ultralight Sleeping Bag (Men’s)

At under 1 pound, the Micron is exceptionally lightweight and comes with a sack that further compresses the sleeping bag. It’s great for staying warm on cool nights, but if you get too toasty you can release heat by opening its side zipper, which starts from the bag's head, crosses the foot box, and rounds to the other side. Fully unzipping also converts it into a flat blanket.

A DWR-coating helps with water resistance, and two hang loops make air-drying a cinch. An internal stash pocket lets you pack away small goods, too, like a phone or a flashlight. Plenty of reviewers online say it’s smartly designed and of excellent quality.

If you’re looking for warmth in case things get unexpectedly cold, note that this bag doesn’t include a hood, which will leave your head exposed.

Nomadix Puffer Blanket

Puffer Blanket

Nomadix makes versatile insulated blankets that also work as sleeping bags and cloaks, thanks to snap-button closures. They’re also super lightweight at just 2 pounds, with a stuff sack that packs down to 14 by 6 inches.

Although these aren’t traditional sleeping bags you can crawl into, they present a solid alternative for warmer nights and daytime naps during a camping trip.

These customer-favorite blankets are sand- and water-resistant, made with recycled polyester, and available in various colors and patterns. Without much fluff and fill compared to the true bags on this list, the Puffer is an excellent option for casual car campers who want to pack light. However, don’t expect it to be as tough or warm as a traditional sleeping bag.

Travel + Leisure / Signe Bamsey

Sleeping under the stars might sound magical, but actually trying to get some shut-eye on the cold hard ground isn’t quite so romantic. Luckily, the best sleeping bags are not only easily portable, they make your outdoor rest downright enjoyable instead of merely tolerable.

We tested 26 sleeping bags to evaluate comfort, temperature, quality, value, and portability. We tested sleeping bags geared toward both casual campers and minimalist backpackers, taking into account shape (rectangular, double-wide, and form-fitting mummy-style bags among them), weight, packed size, and the quality of materials used to construct each bag.

There are a lot of factors to consider when selecting a sleeping bag, including the temperature range where you intend to use it, your sleeping style (side, back, starfish, restless), and your body type. While many sleeping bags these days are unisex, some are designed specifically for men and some are specific to women — we slept outdoors in a variety of weather for countless nights over a six-month period to find the best options for all campers.

Best Overall

Marmot sawtooth 15 sleeping bag.

The Marmot Sawtooth 15 is versatile enough to be a solid three-season sleeping bag.

Although it's not excessively heavy, this bag isn’t as lightweight as some others on our list.

Durable, cozy, warm, and stylish, this sleeping bag is a great option for all types of campers. The bag may be geared more toward backpackers, due to its light weight and mummy-style design, but it’s also a comfy choice if you’re camping by car. Mummy bags like the Sawtooth 15 tend to be more conducive for backpackers trying to save weight, but a mummy bag might be more comfortable if you like to burrow in.

The Marmot Sawtooth 15 is not only the most comfortable and most versatile sleeping bag we tested, it’s also a sustainable option due to its Responsible Down Standard certification and recycled fabrics. The 650-fill-power duck down kept us plenty warm during five nights of mid-40s temperatures. When unzipped, extended flaps or temperature control wings allow for a more blanket-like experience, as does the bag’s extra width at the shoulders and hips. Meanwhile, the footbox zipper opens when you want additional space for your feet, or you can keep it closed if you prefer snug and balmy toes. Yet another smart feature is the internal stash pocket for your phone or headlamp. Whether you’re using it for overnight or multi-day hikes, the bag stuffs down well and includes a compression storage sack for easy packing. While the Marmot Sawtooth 15 is specifically designed for men, the Marmot Teton 15 is a near-identical model designed for women.

The Details: Nylon, 650-fill-power duck down | 2.8 pounds (regular); 3 pounds (long) | 15 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 72 inches (regular); 78 inches (long)

Enlightened Equipment Revelation Sleeping Quilt

This unisex sleeping bag performs well through a wide range of temperatures and seasons and will be durable for many years.

You should use it with a sleeping pad for extra insulation.

As the brand’s best-selling model, this Enlightened Equipment sleeping quilt is a favorite of long-distance hikers. After six months of regularly using this sleeping bag, we love its smart, ultra-lightweight design that allows for a comfortable night’s sleep in a range of temperatures and climates. Because it’s a quilt and not a bag, you may want to use this model along with a sleeping pad to add insulation and comfort. A pad attachment system with elastic straps and clips keeps the quilt secure, while a snap and drawcord neck closure help avoid drafts. When camping in warmer months, lay it open like a blanket, and in colder temps, cinch up the 1/4-length adjustable zipper to close the footbox. We tested this in 30-degree temps and stayed warm and dry all night. Without a full-length zipper or built-in hood (a draft collar option is available), the bag is lightweight and permits you to comfortably move around in your sleep. The bag’s buckles (versus a full zipper) also make it more convenient, save on weight and space, and encourage quick and easy entry and exit. Priced competitively for quality and performance. It includes a stuff sack, a storage bag, and two elastic straps.

The Details: Ultralight Nylon 10D with DWR finish; ethically sourced 850-fill-power or 950-fill-power down from RDS-certified supplier | 1.2 pounds | 20 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 50-68 inches

Best for Side Sleepers

Big agnes sl 20 sleeping bag.

Incredibly comfortable for all sorts of sleepers but especially side-sleepers, this bag is ergonomically designed and moves along with your body as you roll.

Although it’s rated to withstand temperatures down to 20 degrees, we were a bit chilly around 25 degrees.

Do you tend to sleep on your side and/or toss through the night? The ergonomically contoured Big Agnes Sidewinder for men and women features body-mapped FireLine ECO synthetic insulation alleviates pressure points at the hips and feet, moves along with your body as you roll from side to side, and stays optimally warm as you settle — and resettle — into position. The insulation is lofty with a PFC-free water-repellent finish to keep you dry and warm, even if the bag itself gets wet. The Big Agnes also gets extra eco-friendly points for its incorporation of post-consumer recycled polyester.

We happily backpacked for multiple nights at a time with this bag but noted we needed an extra blanket to stay warm when temperatures were in the 15-to-25-degree range, despite its 20-degree rating. Multi-season campers should keep this in mind when putting together their packing lists. For side sleepers who don't like a traditional mummy-style bag, this bag’s helpful jacket-style hood is insulated and keeps a camping pillow in place. It’s relatively lightweight and compatible with most types and sizes of sleeping pads, and it packs down to a compact size. The Big Agnes Sidewinder also includes a storage sack and stuff sack.

The Details: Ripstop nylon, 650-fill-power DownTek/FireLine ECO | 2.2 pounds (regular); 2.4 pounds (long) | 20 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 72 inches (regular); 78 inches (long)

Best for Backpacking

Rab 20f mythic ultra 360 down sleeping bag.

The Rab excels in portability, packing down small and weighing in at less than 1.5 pounds — about half the weight of most high-end backpacking bags .

As the most expensive bag on this list, you might expect it to be a four-season bag, but it’s only rated to 20 degrees.

Yes, this unisex bag is pricey, but it’s also a very unique product that serves a specific purpose. Made for the high-end backpacker or thru-hiker counting every extra gram, it’s ideal for mountain marathon runners, high-end alpinists who need to travel light, and those partaking in trends such as fast-packing or the minimalist backpacking movement. Constructed with ultralightweight 7D ripstop nylon, it uses Thermo Ionic Lining Technology (TILT), which harnesses titanium to help reflect the sleeper’s body heat back into the bag without compromising the breathability of the fabric. This reduces the amount of down required, and we love that it’s the lightest sleeping bag they’ve owned for below freezing temps.

Filled with 900-fill-power fluorocarbon-free down that has a durable water-repellent coating, the bag boasts an even insulation distribution to eliminate cold spots, plus it resists moisture and dries quickly. While the price tag makes it one of the most expensive bags on our list, if you are backpacking a lot, you might want to make that investment. What creates a higher cost is the materials, essentially, because they are going to be a lot more lightweight and durable for the backpacking ones versus the car camping ones. The bag feels much lighter, softer, and plushier than most others on the market. It was cozy even during a cold, windy night with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

The Details: Ultra-lightweight 7D ripstop nylon, 900-fill-power European goose down with Nikwax finish, Rab fluorocarbon-free hydrophobic down | 1.3 pounds | 20 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 84.6 inches

Best for Winter

Mountain hardware bishop pass 15 sleeping bag.

This sleeping bag has an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio. We tried both the 0-degree and 15-degree bags, finding the responsibly sourced down warm and of good quality.

A noteworthy option for beginner backpackers who want a high-quality bag, this Mountain Hardwear option was recommended as a gateway option, but more advanced campers may want to look elsewhere.

The Mountain Hardwear Bishop Pass 15 sleeping bag for men and women features 650-fill-power fluorine-free down retains heat, warranting its high-performance warmth-to-weight ratio and securing its reputation as relatively lightweight for a cold-weather bag. The bag’s mummy cut fits close to the body and features a shaped draft collar and adjustable down-filled face gasket to keep warm air in and cold air out. The anatomically shaped footbox provides additional comfort and warmth, and the bag has a durable water-repellent finish to help keep the down insulation dry, and a full-length down draft tube prevents heat loss and cold spots.

A nifty glow-in-the-dark zipper with an anti-snag slider allows for easy entry and exit. The bag may also be zipped up with another compatible Mountain Hardwear sleeping bag (with a right zipper) to create a bed for two. It comes with a compressible stuff sack and mesh storage bag for transport — ideal to pack for a winter camping trip . Overall, this bag is a good value for a three-season bag, particularly the 0-degree model that can withstand strong wind and temps in the teens.

The Details: 20-denier ripstop nylon, 30-denier plain weave nylon, fluorine-free, 650-fill-power RDS down  | 2.3 pounds (regular); 2.4 pounds (long) | 15 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 72 inches (regular); 78 inches (long)

Best Splurge

Mountain hardwear gore-tex sleeping bag.

The cushioning feels next level, it's like sleeping in a warm cloud.

This bag is designed for cold climbing trips, not simply car camping or more casual backpacking in cooler temps.

This high-quality, lightweight, and unisex bag is a great choice for experienced adventurers seeking a reliable, cozy sleeping bag for high-alpine climbs, backcountry hut trips, skiing, or multi-week backpacking in conditions that require a 0-degree model. The brand also makes a minus-40 degrees Fahrenheit version for extreme summit expeditions to the likes of Mt. Everest or Denali, but this bag is better suited for summiting 14k-ers or cold-weather backpackers. It’s filled with 850-fill down insulation, which provides optimal warmth, comfort, compressibility, and packability, and the 10D recycled shell is both lightweight and durable. The mummy cut is designed to maximize the warmth-to-weight ratio, and the four-chamber hood helps to maintain an even loft around the head. The contoured footbox follows the natural position of the feet, and the draft collar blocks the escape of warm air from inside the bag.

The bag also has a durable water-repellent finish and a glow-in-the-dark zipper pull, and it is available with either left- or right-hand zippers for zip-together functionality. The Phantom bag is super warm, but not so warm that you feel hot, and breathable enough to prevent sweaty overheating. It’s also windproof, keeping campers warm in severe weather. After six months of using this sleeping bag, we love it whether you're heading off on a cold weather expedition or mountaineering trip. If you're planning to take it on an intense climbing trip, the safety quotient is well worth the higher cost. The one downside to a very lofty, down-filled bag is often packability, and this bag takes a little longer to pack up.

The Details: Fabric: 10D recycled nylon ghost ripstop, recycled nylon, 850-fill-power RDS, fluorine-free down | 3.5 pounds | 0 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 80 inches (short); 86 inches (regular); 92 inches (long)

Best Double

Nemo jazz double sleeping bag.

It has a built-in bed sheet so you can tailor your comfort to your needs.

The large stuff sack isn't as portable as other options.

We recommend this sleeping bag for couples who enjoy camping in warm or chilly climates. It's the perfect all-in-one sleep set-up as it comes with a built-in bed sheet that you can choose to use or not depending on the temperature, so you don't have to lug extra blankets to your campsite. It also features built-in foot vents, so if one sleeper runs warm, they can allow a bit of air into their side of the sleeping bag without disturbing their partner.

The bag itself is soft and durable, built with a mummy-style hood to help keep you warmer. Throughout our six-month test, we used this during 25-degree November camping and we didn't feel cold at any point in the night. The one downside to this sleeping bag is that it's quite massive, and the "stuff sack" is actually a duffel bag. Still, it weighs less than 8 pounds, so wouldn't be too difficult to transport, especially if you're car camping.

Most Versatile

Sea to summit ascent down sleeping bag.

This is a high-quality true four-season bag due to its unique and ingenious triple-zipper and ventilation system.

This model is heavy for a backpacking bag, weighing in at nearly 3 pounds.

This unisex Sea to Summit sleeping bag is a high-quality, comfortable, and versatile option for cold-weather camping and backpacking. It is shaped to allow for a natural sleeping position and is compact and lightweight for easy transport. We were initially skeptical of the Sea to Summit Ascent Bag‘s 0-degree rating, but we used it in 20 degrees, found it warm and effective, and are confident it can be used as a four-season bag. Made with premium materials, the bag has a high down fill level of 750+ and can also be spread out and used as a down quilt or blanket. You can zip it together with the brand’s Journey , Venture , or Altitude sleeping bag models to create a cozy double . The triple-zipper system also allows for ventilation in warmer conditions. We highly recommend this bag and consider it one of the most versatile, reliable, and adaptable bags they’ve used for both cold-weather camping and backpacking. It comes with a compression bag and storage cell for easy packability, transport, and storage.

Best for Women

Big agnes torchlight ul 20 degree f sleeping bag.

The bag has an extra flap around the zipper to keep cold air from penetrating, and it has additional zippers along the side that make it adjustable to fit most body types.

Though it’s incredibly comfortable and ideal for backpacking in cold weather, it is not recommended for warm-weather use.

Designed to contour to a woman’s figure for the most comfortable, body-mapped, thermally efficient sleep, we loved the additional zippers along the side of this bag. Customizable with a less drastic taper from shoulders, to hips and feet — thus reducing cold spots and creating more warmth where you need it — the bag offers multiple adjustment options that add up to 10 inches, depending on your sleep style and body shape. Plus, the zippers allow for added ventilation if you start to feel too warm. This lightweight bag has a jacket-style hood that contours to the shape of a woman’s face for a cozy fit, plus a cordlock that lets you un-cinch it with one hand. The bag was easy to set up and puffy after a good shake. When used with the brand’s sleeping pad, it protects from the cold ground. After using the bag for a total of five nights in temperatures ranging from 24 to 31 degrees, we loved its warmth and comfort regardless of whether you’re a side or back sleeper. With high marks for its lofty down, quality material, and superior construction, we also gave a thumbs-up to the anti-lock zipper that doesn’t get stuck in the fabric. After six months of regularly using this sleeping bag, we also love the interior phone pocket that allows you to have easy-access to cellphones in case of emergency. The women’s Torchlight features exterior loops for hang-drying, a storage sack, a stuff sack, and an inner mesh pouch for your cell phone.

Western Mountaineering 30F Down Sleeping Bag

It comes in three different lengths with options for a right- or left-sided zipper.

This lightweight sleeping bag may be best for backpackers.

We were thoroughly impressed by this unisex sleeping bag. Despite it getting down to around 38 degrees one night during our testing period, this bag kept us plenty warm and super comfortable. This mummy-style bag is roomier than most other bags we've tested, so it didn't feel like it was too restrictive. Made with 850-fill goose down, it's extremely light but still feels durable enough to take on every adventure. Plus, at less than two pounds in weight and packing down to roughly 7 by 12 inches, it's a reasonable option for shorter backpacking trips. While this sleeping bag is a bit more of an investment, we love that it comes in three different sizes, so you can select the exact shape suited to your height.

Best for Warm Weather

Therm-a-rest 32f/0c sleeping bag.

This is an excellent two-season bag for milder climates and warmer nights.

It is not suited to year-round use.

For anyone who longs for warm nights sleeping under the stars, this sleeping bag is the perfect unisex choice. After over one year of testing, we find it to be incredibly comfortable and lightweight. Typical to Therm-a-Rest products, this bag employs quality and ethically-sources materials. The ripstop nylon material is very soft and the 900-fill down adds some plushness to the comfort. This bag weighs just about one pound and packs down to not much larger than a water bottle — perfect for backpackers or bikepackers who don't want to be weighed down by their gear. For campers who live in warm climates or those who take their gear seriously and want to invest in a sleeping bag made for the cold and another made for the warmth, this is a great choice sure to last for years to come.

Best Budget

Kelty catena 30 sleeping bag.

Just as the brand advertises, this bag is ideal for starfish sleepers, meaning it’s spacious enough for you to spread out.

Claims that it will keep you warm even in 30-degree weather are questionable. (We advise using this bag for spring and summer camping trips, not in the winter.)

Ideal for first-time campers , warm-weather campers, and those who tend to car-camp versus multi-day trekkers, the Kelty Catena is an affordable, roomy, and unisex choice. Boasting a spacious rectangle shape, the sleeping bag is made of lightweight polyester with synthetic Cloudloft insulation that worked beautifully while sleeping inside a car in 50-ish degree weather but may require an extra layer of warmth — another blanket, just in case — for chillier circumstances. Speaking of blankets, this bag also unzips and can be used as a blanket, and you can zip two Kelty Catenas together to create a double-wide sleeping bag or comforter for two (or three, if you have a pup or small child). Hailed as durable and roomy enough for restless sleepers and boasting an anti-snag, anti-draft zipper, this is a great basic sleeping bag for leisurely or sporadic camping trips. However, we don’t recommend it for winter temperatures. For the casual camper seeking a long-lasting, inexpensive sleeping bag, this is definitely worth it. Plus, the bag comes in a convenient stuff sack that allows for quick packing jobs and swift departures.

The Details: 50D 300T polyester (liner); 190T poly taffeta (shell); Cloudloft Synthetic (fill) | 3.97 pounds | 30 degree Fahrenheit temperature rating | 72 inches

Other Sleeping Bags We Liked

Although we narrowed down the best sleeping bags for this list, there were other models that didn’t make the cut, due to a few flaws. However, we still feel they are worth consideration.

Feathered Friends Egret UL 20/30 Women's Sleeping Bag : Although we compared this bag to “sleeping on a cloud” regarding its comfort factor, they reported having some trouble with the zipper. Considering the bag’s high price, that feature was disappointing and knocked it off the list.

To curate this list of recommendations, we sent 26 sleeping bags to our outdoor gear experts to use over a period of six months. We researched popular brands in advance in order to compare a variety of features and accommodate multiple preferences.

We paid special attention to five categories of consumer interest: comfort, warmth, quality, portability, and value. We started by inspecting the bags, noting our first impressions of how they were crafted and checking aspects of their construction, such as zippers and insulation.

Next, we spent a minimum of two nights sleeping in the bags, with at least one of those nights situated outdoors, and noted the temperature outside, how warm or cool we felt in the bag, and other impressions. We also folded and packed up the bags, accounting for qualities like weight and ease of transport. The sleeping bags that garnered the best feedback were notable for their comfort, heat retention, functionality, compactness, and overall quality. Issues such as moisture management, ventilation, reasonable wear and tear, size and cushioning, as well as versatility and packability were also taken into account over several use sessions. The best sleeping bags were also evaluated in terms of the type of camper or backpacker, experience level, sleep issues and budget, as well as elevated design features like storage compartments.

Tips for Buying a Sleeping Bag

Consider the insulation type.

Generally, there are two categories of insulation: natural (down) and synthetic (Thermolite, M4, and recycled Stratofiber, to name a few). The purpose of insulation is to trap a warm layer of air close to the body and keep skin toasty while resisting moisture and preventing too much heat loss. Some sleeping bag brands set their own temperature ratings, called "EN" and "ISO" ratings, which can be used to help compare different products. Often made of nylon or polyester, synthetic fillers tend to dry quickly and can insulate even when they get wet, which is an advantage over down. Synthetic insulation is also typically less expensive than down, plus it’s hypoallergenic and durable.

Related to insulation is “loft,” which refers to natural down feathers’ volume, fluffiness, and fill power. The higher the loft measurement, the more air is trapped, and the higher the fill power, which means better overall insulation. However, breathability is also important. If the sleeping bag shell is fully waterproof, it completely traps your body's water vapor inside the bag. Goose down insulation is not naturally hydrophobic (water-repellent), so in order to step up protection, brands now tend to add a treatment process to the down that reduces water absorption, helping it dry more quickly and retain loft. If you want real down, look for a liner protected by Gore-tex Windstopper, for example, which renders the sleeping bag water-resistant, windproof, and breathable.

So, which kind of sleeping bag insulation is best? There are pros and cons to both types. Usually, the argument is that synthetic is better to combat moisture, but some experts say that keeping down dry isn’t that difficult. There are also environmental and ethical factors that may sway your decision regarding synthetic versus down bags. Look for labels like RDS (Responsible Down Standard) or TDS (Global Traceable Down Standard).

Think about what type of sleeper you are

Sleeping is a very personal experience; we all have our individual styles and tendencies. Temperature is one factor; some folks are always cold at night, while others run warm or even hot. Sleep position is another major aspect to consider. There are a wide variety of positions, from side sleepers to back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and restless sleepers who wind up in multiple poses throughout the night. Consider your own habits, and let them guide your choice of sleeping bag. If you usually sleep on your back or side, a mummy-style bag will likely be comfortable for you. However, if you’re a stomach sleeper or someone who moves around a lot at night, mummy bags will probably feel constrictive on your arms and head. Those who regularly move around a lot in their beds at night ought to seek a wider version of whatever bag they’re most interested in or try a quilt-style bag. Also, when shopping for bag sizes, keep in mind that a stomach sleeper’s toes tend to point away from the head and will likely add 3-4 inches to their overall height (back sleepers’ toes point up, so this is less of an issue for them).

Know your campsite needs

Whether you’re camping out under the stars, snug in a tent, hanging in a hammock, or cozy inside your RV, the first factor to consider when choosing a bag is the temperature and your overall campsite environment. A sleeping bag that keeps you cool in the summer might not withstand a dipping fall thermostat, let alone frigid winter weather. However, a warm bag may render you sweaty and uncomfortable in warmer months. Decide whether you’re looking for an all-season bag or whether you’re more likely to go camping only during the summer, and then shop accordingly.

Other considerations are the season and immediate forecast. If it’s possible you’ll encounter some rain (or other wet conditions, such as on a river rafting trip), you’ll want a bag that is waterproof. “Bags now are being given what's called a durable water-repellent coating, or DWR coating,” says Allen. “I think that's nice to have. You're not going to be camping in the rain, but in the chance you do, it's just kind of nice to have that extra little protection.”

Consider how far you’ll need to carry your gear. If you're a long-distance backpackers with an agenda that includes carrying your bag while hiking trails in the heat of summer, you should opt for a lightweight model that keeps you just warm enough. However, if you’re planning to drive to a campsite and sleep near your car, perhaps you’re better off prioritizing temperature and the type of insulation versus weight. Keep in mind, too, that mummy-style sleeping bags tend to be more compact.

Whether or not to bring along a camping mattress, be it an air mattress or a sleeping pad, is yet another important choice. This question is debatable. Some say the quality of your sleep while camping is of the utmost importance and that an added comfort feature is a must. Other, possibly more rugged campers may suggest that a mattress or pad is unnecessary, especially if you’re sleeping in a hammock. We tend to side with the former group, because an extra layer of cushioning — and insulation — is likely to help you get some shut-eye. If you’re car camping and have no concerns about additional weight or space, do yourself a favor and get a camping pad or air mattress, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

It’s typically not necessary to wash your bag more than about once a year, unless you’re using it very frequently. Most home washing machines can handle a sleeping bag, but be careful about using a top-loading washer with an agitator, which can destroy the bag’s outer lining. Always be sure to check the instructions on the care label. Another important specification when cleaning a bag is making sure to use the appropriate detergent, as down insulation requires a special type ( Nikwax Down Wash , for example) to protect the feathers. Avoid using fabric softener, bleach, and bleach alternatives on the bag, no matter the type of filling. The majority of sleeping bags can be spot-cleaned and hand-washed, though a bag’s bulkiness can make the latter a challenging task. Take your sleeping bag to a laundromat to be cleaned in a large capacity or front load washer and dryer if you prefer. Depending on your method, drying can take a while. Whether it takes a few hours or you need to leave it overnight, a bag must be thoroughly dry before you store it, to avoid mildew growth.

Many sleeping bags come with a stuff sack that has loops or straps attached, making it easy to connect the bag to a backpack. However, if your bag doesn’t include one or either of these attachment features, you have a few options. One possible solution is to stuff the sleeping bag into your backpack, but that may not leave enough room for other items depending on how many days/nights you are camping. For a sack that does have loops, you can use bungee cords to attach the sack to a backpack. Just hook the cord through the loops, and tightly wind it around the backpack a few times. If your backpack has its own straps and loops, you can usually attach the sleeping bag to the outside of the pack, leaving plenty of space inside it for storing other camping items and clothing. If your backpack doesn’t have loops or straps, you can try compression buckles or straps which are handy for securing the sleeping bag tightly to the pack, discouraging it from swinging around and keeping both the bag and the pack more stable. Yet another DIY option is carabiners , which can be clipped onto the exterior of your backpack and connected to the sleeping bag sack’s loops. A few carabiners can also help secure any of the above methods, allowing you to hang any other items off the pack (including the bag) as needed.

Neither! Nine times out of 10, regardless of whether it has down or synthetic fill, you’ll want to stuff a sleeping bag when you store it. The one exception is canvas sleeping bags, which usually include a zippered bag or roll-up straps for storage purposes. However, for the majority of sleeping bags, you’re better off avoiding folding or rolling them, which can break down loft over time. Stuffing a bag is better, because the method of “folding” is different every time you pack it away, plus stuffing reduces air pockets and allows for a more compact packed sack.

Depending on the bag type, synthetic or down-filled, you want to store it in different ways. In either case, make sure to take it out of its stuff sack, and allow it to hang dry completely. Down bags should not be compressed; they should be stored inside-out in a loose, cotton or mesh, breathable bag to keep the down lofted and fresh. Finally, store it somewhere cool and dry where it won’t get squished, such as the top shelf of a closet.

Best sleeping bags for kids that are ideal for camping or a sleepover

T here’s nothing more exciting than getting ready for a camping trip and whether they’re at their first festival, on a campsite abroad or even in their own back garden, kids will absolutely love snuggling up in their own special sleeping bag.

But with so many options available, it’s difficult to know which one to choose, especially for first-time campers.

To help you decide, whether you’re looking for a toddler’s first sleeping bag or an option for teens, we’ve searched around to find 10 of the best sleeping bags for kids.

How to choose a kid’s sleeping bag?

There are a number of considerations to take into account when thinking about children’s sleeping bags.

In order to choose the best kid’s sleeping bags for your little ones, it’s worth thinking about when you plan to use them. If it’s just the odd summer camping trip, warmth may not be a big consideration. So a one or two-season sleeping bag will do the job nicely.

However, if you want to be able to take the kids camping all year round, then you’ll need to opt for a three or four-season bag to keep them warm and toasty throughout the night.

Weight and size may also be an issue if you’re backpacking or headed to a festival. If you need to keep packing to a minimum, look for a lightweight bag that can be stuffed into a small compression sack. But, if weight isn’t an issue, for example on a family camping trip, you may prefer to go for extra comfort by choosing a roll-up bed.

The age of your child should also be taken into account when deciding on a sleeping bag. In order to keep your little one as warm as possible it’s better not to have masses of empty space underneath their feet. Look for a recommended sleeping bag within your child’s age or height range. It’s also possible to buy extendable sleeping bags which grow with your child and save having to buy new ones further down the line, which is a good option if you’re planning to use them for a few years.

And finally, this may sound obvious, but make sure it’s washable! Mud is inevitable for any sort of camping, so being able to pop it into the washing machine once you’re home is a must. Likewise, hooks to hang the bag out to air during the day may also be helpful.

Whatever you decide to go for, we’ve got all options covered with our round-up of the best sleeping bags for kids.

Quechua Children’s Sleeping Bag MH500

Best for: overall

The Quechua Children’s Sleeping Bag MH500 is a great option if you’re looking for a super warm bag, which will last your little one years.

It has a comfort temperature of 0C (with a limit temperature of -5C), which means that it can be used on colder spring and autumn nights. Made from 100 per cent polyester, it also has an adjustable hood to ensure that your little adventurer stays cosy and warm all night long.

One of our favourite features was the ‘Pull & Fit’ system, which means that the length of the sleeping bag can be adjusted thanks to a pull cord on either side. It has been designed to fit a child between 115cm and 155cm which means that no heat is wasted when sleeping. Our little tester loved that it could be made to the perfect size for her.

One thing to note if your child warm up quickly and likes to undo their sleeping bag during the night is that it only zips halfway down due to the pull cord system.

The Quechua Children’s Sleeping Bag MH500 has been designed by parents, so it includes lots of thoughtful features borne from hands-on experience, such as a cute toy pocket on the outside so their best buddy doesn’t get lost in the night.

It weighs 1.2kg, comes in three colours and is machine washable.

Selk’bag Lite Grey Fiery Sleeping Bag Suit

Best for: older kids and teens

If you have a teen who is always freezing, think outside the box (or bag?) and get them a sleep suit instead.

The Selk’bag is made from 100 per cent recycled materials and is essentially a sleeping bag onesie.

It includes an adjustable hood and elastic hand openings which can be tucked over chilly fingers while sleeping. It also has zip-off booties with nylon soles which can be worn at night and then removed to wear normal shoes when moving around.

Made from two layers of synthetic hollow fibre insulation and a water resistant coating, the sleep suit is super soft when on and basically feels like walking around in a duvet.

The small Selk’bag fits those between 4ft 5in and 4ft 9in, so perfect for teens. Plus, a kids-specific range will be released later this year, complete with cute designs.

The Selk’bag is warm enough to wear all year round for camping and while our teenage reviewer loved the thought of being so cosy during the night, the main selling point for her was not having to get out of a nice warm sleeping bag in the morning to walk around a cold campsite. Simply unzip the booties and you can continue to wear the suit until the day warms up. Camping bliss!

Regatta Hilo Boost Expandable Sleeping Bag

Best for: growing kids

If your children seem to have weekly growth spurts, then Regatta’s Hilo Boost Expandable Sleeping Bag is a sound investment. Designed specifically for growing kids, the expandable base section allows the length to change from 170cm to 195cm.

This two season mummy sleeping bag has been designed to retain heat and includes an insulated shoulder baffle to minimise heat loss from the top of the bag. Our little tester really liked how cosy she felt in it.

The 10 per cent polyester bag has a two-way zip, which allows for opening from the top or bottom

It’s a great option for camping trips or festivals when you’re trying to pack light. Its compression stuff sack reduces its size and it weighs just 1.3kg.

Bundle Beds Junior Bundle Bed

Best for: away-from-home adventures

If your little one wants a bit of luxury on a night under canvas, look no further than the Junior Bundle Bed, self-described as “the ultimate kids travel bed”.

Designed for toddlers through to 12+ years, it’s a roll-up bed that can be taken anywhere. As well as being the perfect option for sleepovers, this is a great way to ensure your kids are super comfortable when camping. It includes a 5cm thick self-inflating mattress, a 100 per cent jersey cotton fitted sheet with waterproof lining and a 15-tog duvet, which buttons at the bottom to keep it in place.

It’s also possible to add inflatable bumpers to the bed (£50) to ensure little ones don’t roll off in the night.

This all means that it comes in much heavier than a sleeping bag, at 5kg, but if weight isn’t an issue, then your little one will be guaranteed a good night’s sleep in this.

The idea behind the bundle bed is to create a planet-friendly sleeping option, that doesn’t need to be regularly replaced and everything certainly feels well made. The duvet and pillow are filled with 100 per cent recycled plastic from bottles and feel super soft and comfortable. In fact, we don’t mind admitting that we felt a tiny bit jealous seeing our little tester all wrapped up in the duvet. Lucky there’s an adult version!

Snugpak Basecamp Explorer

Best for: wriggly kids

The Snugpak Basecamp Explorer offers the double benefit of a close-fitting hood to keep your little one warm, along with a square shape which creates more room for kids who like to move around a lot.

Our young tester liked that this one felt more roomy than some of the Egyptian mummy-style sleeping bags.

It also has the extra benefit of being able to be unzipped entirely, in order to become a lightweight insulated quilt. This is perfect for those warmer camping evenings or if you have a little one who always feels too hot in a sleeping bag.

The Snugpak Basecamp Explorer includes a supersoft lining and Isofibre insulation and is suitable to use during late spring and summer. It weighs just 1kg and is available in camouflage print or purple.

Available in cute designs, it’s a great option for a first camping trip or keeping your little one warm on a caravanning holiday. It also packs away into a compact bag, which makes it a good space saver.

While it does suggest that this can be used by children aged 0-2, we think it is probably more suitable for a toddler. Our 18-month-old tester was thrilled to wriggle around to his heart’s content in it.
