Meet the Characters of Disney’s Jungle Cruise

By the D23 Team

Disney’s Jungle Cruise , inspired by the classic Disney theme park attraction, is a rollicking thrill ride down the mighty and mysterious Amazon, set to make waves when it arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access on Friday, July 30. Featuring a star-studded cast led by Dwayne Johnson as the wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff and Emily Blunt as determined botanist Dr. Lily Houghton, Jungle Cruise is a pulse-quickening adventure in which Lily enlists Frank’s guide service and his ramshackle boat, La Quila , to convey her through the deepest and most dangerous parts of the Amazon River to try to uncover the mystery of an ancient tree—one with the power to change the fate of humanity. Here is a guide to the dazzling array of colorful characters you will meet beginning this Friday when Jungle Cruise debuts.

jungle cruise

Frank Wolff/Dwayne Johnson Charismatic skipper Frank Wolff is head of the Jungle Navigation Company. Opportunistic and endlessly charming, Frank leads unwitting tourists on sightseeing cruises along the Amazon that are low on substance but high on humor. As a producer, the potential for a Jungle Cruise –influenced feature film project was tantalizing enough, but to take on the mantle of Frank, the down-on-his-luck skipper of the jungle cruise riverboat, was chock-full of possibilities for Johnson. Describing his character, Johnson says, “Frank is a skipper on the Amazon, and he takes a lot of pride in what he does. There are elements as the movie progresses where you start to realize things about Frank that one would never have guessed. The man is an old soul who has a very unique perspective on life itself. Frank meets Lily, who is ambitious and brave and funny and charming and beautiful, and all these things eventually remind him how great life can be.”

jungle cruise

Dr. Lily Houghton/Emily Blunt Dr. Lily Houghton is a determined British scientist and explorer who is as brilliant as she is fearless. Driven not only by her ideals but by an unrelenting desire to prove herself, free-spirited Lily is a force to be reckoned with. “I was just so struck by Lily’s determination and tenacity, and the fact that she was so ahead of her time, considering that the film is set in 1917,” says Blunt. “There was so much inequality between men and women and what was expected of her at the time. But she doesn’t subscribe to what was appropriate for her sex. And I found her really funny. She’s very reckless and heedless and adventurous. I admired her spirit.”

jungle cruise

Captain Aguirre/Edgar Ramírez Captain Aguirre is the fearsome leader of a cutthroat crew of soldiers. These cursed men are powerful fighters who carry a personal vendetta that makes them even more of a threat to Frank and Lily on their quest. “I also love the mystery of my character, Aguirre, and the duality of the character,” Ramirez says. “To play a character like Aguirre, who walks that very thin line between good and evil, is very interesting.”

jungle cruise

MacGregor Houghton/Jack Whitehall Lily’s brother, MacGregor, joins her and Frank on their expedition down the Amazon. Dapper MacGregor enjoys the finer things in life—stylish fashion, fine dining and elegant living—even in the middle of the rain forest. British comedian/actor Jack Whitehall is perfectly cast as a well-meaning sibling, whose often inept attempts to take care of his sister give the film some of its most hilarious moments. Although he and Blunt had never met, they soon discovered some unexpected overlaps in their backgrounds growing up in the same part of London. The pair easily fell into a familial rapport. “Our backstories are very similar,” notes Whitehall, “so Emily and I playing sister and brother just seems so right. I think we’ve been able to transfer all of those weird connections we have on to the screen in the best possible way.”

jungle cruise

Nilo/Paul Giamatti Owner of a wildly successful sightseeing cruise company, Nilo is a powerful figure—and a tough competitor—in the Amazonian port town where Frank ekes out a living with his ramshackle boat. Veteran actor Paul Giamatti portrays Nilo, who has a long history with Frank Wolff, Johnson’s character. “Nilo keeps Frank under his thumb,” says Giamatti. “He extorts money out of him, and he wants all the boats in the town. He even wants Frank’s beat-up boat. Nilo just wants to control everything. So he’s bullying Frank to get what he wants.” Frank’s boat, La Quila , is the exact opposite of Nilo’s slick, state-of-the-art tourist boats that are moored in the same harbor. “ La Quila is a wonderful sort of character in and of itself,” comments Giamatti. “It’s just a fantastic, beat-up old trooper of a boat, which Frank is like too, in many ways. Frank’s been around a long time, and the boat’s been around a long time.”

jungle cruise

Prince Joachim/Jesse Plemons Prince Joachim is a wealthy and capable young commander with an arsenal of military-grade weapons at his disposal. In his quest for power and glory, he ruthlessly seeks the secret at the heart of Lily and Frank’s journey. “We tried to create a villain character that feels unique,” Plemons says. “It was just about finding his quirks. He’s someone who is forward-thinking and looking far ahead into the future. So, I tried to keep that in mind when I was working on the character.”

Mike Flanagan Reveals First Look at Tom Hiddleston in New Stephen King Movie

Why star trek v: the final frontier's visual effects were so bad, deadpool & wolverine director reveals the one thing that couldn't be included in the film.

With the promise of adventure, excitement, legends and curses , Disney’s Juggle Cruise is sure to be an exhilarating movie. It takes its inspiration from the boat attraction of the same name, which can be found at four Disney theme parks worldwide, and its premise is the search for the legendary Tree of Life. The only problem is that that tree, which could greatly improve medicine, is supposedly deep within the Amazon Jungle.

Intent on making the discovery of a lifetime, a British scientist and her brother travel to South America and enlist the services of a local captain, who runs a less-than-pristine riverboat attraction. Along the way, they will have to face the dangerous wildlife and the deadly environment of the Amazon. And to make matters worse, there has to be a villain of some kind, so an Imperial German expedition is also racing to find the same legendary tree. With all that to keep track of, here's who’s who ahead of  Jungle Cruise’s  release.

Dwayne Johnson as “Skipper” Frank Wolff

“The Rock” plays Frank Wolff, who owns a jungle cruise business that he describes as the “cheapest” expedition of its kind. Frank tends to be shrewd and cynical but can be noble when the need arises. During Jungle Cruise , Frank is hired to offer passage to two explorers on their quest for the Tree of Life on his boat La Quila but only agrees after being offered a large sum of money. His character is based on the skippers from the original Jungle Cruise attraction, and his attire takes inspiration from Charlie Allnut from The African Queen .

Emily Blunt as Dr. Lily Houghton

The star of A Quiet Place II , Emily Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton, who is a bit like Indian Jones -- eccentric and always looking for an adventure. According to Blunt , Lily is “brave and fearless and wild, and she’s brilliant-minded and humble.” In Jungle Cruise , the character is a British scientist and explorer determined to find the Tree of Life to study it for its medicinal benefits. She, along with her brother, travel to South America, where they hire Skipper Frank Wolff to give them passage up the Amazon River on their quest.

Jack Whitehall as McGregor Houghton

Jack Whitehall is well known for playing Gothi the Troll Priest in Frozen , but in Jungle Cruise , he portrays Lily Houghton’s younger brother, McGregor, who is unambiguously gay. Fiercely devoted to Lily, he accompanies her to the Amazon, even if he isn't the adventurer that she is. In fact, he is skeptical about going after the tree in the first place.

Paul Giamatti as Nilo Nemolato

Paul Giamatti, who recently appeared in Netflix’s Gunpowder Milkshake , plays Nilo Nemolato, the irritable harbormaster where Frank docks his riverboat. For those concerned about missing Giamatti's performance, don't worry, Nilo can be spotted by a pet cockatoo that accompanies him everywhere.

Édgar Ramírez as Aguirre, Quim Gutiérrez as Melchor and Dani Rovira as Sancho

Ramírez, Gutiérrez and Rovira play a trio of cursed, Spanish conquistadors who are also looking for the Tree of Life. Aguirre’s character, specifically, is based on a real-life conquistador named Lope de Aguirre, who was once dubbed “El Loco” after driving himself mad during a failed search for the lost city of El Dorado.

Jesse Plemons as Prince Joachim

Jesse Plemons, who is best known for his roles in films like Game Night and  The Irishman , portrays Prince Joachim in Jungle Cruise . As with any good film, there has to be a villain, and Joachim offers that for this Disney flick. At the same time Dr. Lily Houghton is searching for the Tree of Life, Joachim, who is a deranged German aristocrat, is funding a competing, military expedition to claim the discovery as his own accomplishment.

Veronica Falcón as Trader Sam

Veronica Falcón plays Lupe in the 2020 HBO reboot of Perry Mason , but in Jungle Cruise, she plays a female version of Trader Sam from the Jungle Cruise ride. Trader Sam is the chief is the chieftain of the Indigenous tribe that protects the Tree of Life everyone is searching for. However, the character doesn't come without its own set of issues, as it was removed from the Disney attraction earlier this year after being deemed offensive.

Other Named, Minor Characters

There are other minor characters in Jungle Cruise , but ahead of the film’s release, details on their roles are slim. Raphael Alejandro plays Zaqueu, Simone Lockhart is Anna, Philipp Maximilian tackles Axel, Sulem Calderon portrays Quila and Andy Nyman takes on Sir James Hobbs-Coddington.

Jungle Cruise releases Friday in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access.

After it was pushed back from its original October 2019 release date to July 2020 before being pushed back another whole year, the time has finally come that we get to see Dwayne Johnson visit " the backside of water ." In Jungle Cruise , based on the popular Disneyland attraction of the same name, The Rock plays a sea boat captain enlisted to help guide an eccentric scientist, played by Emily Blunt , on a quest to find the Tree of Life during World War I. While it is easy to tell that this is destined to be one of the biggest 2021 movies with such huge stars in the lead, there are many other big names in the Jungle Cruise cast to look forward to seeing.

Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise

Dwayne Johnson (Frank Wolff)

Playing a hero named Frank who runs a slightly sketchy river tour operation until he's hired by Emily Blunt ’s character for an entirely different purpose is The Rock. He first transitioned from wrestling to acting playing his father on That ‘70s Show before making his film debut in 2001’s The Mummy Returns as The Scorpion King.

He first became friendly with Disney with family films like The Game Plan before the Fast and Furious movies certified him as a franchise rejuvenator and box office draw. After the Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle star returns to the jungle again, he will re-team with Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra for Black Adam (one of the most anticipated DC movies ), return to California for a Big Trouble in Little China sequel, and revisit Hawaii for Robert Zemeckis’ Kamehameha biopic , The King.

Emily Blunt in Jungle Cruise

Emily Blunt (Dr. Lily Houghton)

It is actually surprising that it took until now for Dwayne Johnson and Golden Globe winner Emily Blunt (who plays Lily Houghton, a woman on a quest to find a mythical tree in the Amazon that can cure any ailment) to join forces. For one, she is also a Disney darling, with Mary Poppins Returns and others, and has led action-packed blockbusters like the A Quiet Place movies (directed by and co-starring her husband John Krasinski ).

The British beauty first got America’s attention with 2006’s The Devil Wears Prad , which led to an impressively versatile career, ranging from sci-fi thrillers like Looper to dark indie dramedies like Sunshine Cleaning to light rom-coms like The Five-Year Engagement with Jason Segel . Blunt does not seem interested in granting many fans’ wish to see her play Invisible Woman in the Marvel movies , but could follow Jungle Cruise by reprising her Edge of Tomorrow role if the long-awaited sequel ever happens , that is.

Jack Whitehall in Jungle Cruise

Jack Whitehall (MacGregor Houghton)

Playing the role of MacGregor Houghton, the brother of Lily who accompanies her on the voyage is Jack Whitehall, who may finally make a splash with American audiences by starring in Jungle Cruise . This is not to say, however, that the British comedian does not already have a following in the States, having starred in 2016’s Mother’s Day , the hit Amazon Prime original miniseries Good Omens in 2019, and The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (his first collaboration with Disney) a year earlier. Later in 2021, Whitehall will appear in the live-action Clifford the Big Red Dog movie and is slated to star in two very unique upcoming romance movies called Silent Retreat and Robots .

Paul Giamatti in Jungle Cruise

Paul Giamatti (Nilo Nemolato)

As Nilo Nemolato, who manages the port where Frank keeps his boat, we have Paul Giamatti , who has been acting since the ‘90s, appearing in bit parts in movies like Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show and the Saving Private Ryan cast before he earned his first Golden Globe nomination for 2004’s Sideways , which made him a household name. He has since become an Oscar nominee for Cinderella Man , a Golden Globe and Emmy winner for HBO’s John Adams miniseries, a Marvel villain (Rhino) in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , a shady record producer in the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton , and even Santa Claus in 2007’s Fred Claus with Vince Vaughn.

Jungle Cruise marks Paul Giamatti's second collaboration with Disney after Saving Mr. Banks and his second collaboration with Dwayne Johnson after San Andreas from 2015. He. is also a series regular on Showtime’s Billions and will reportedly reunite with Sideways director Alexander Payne for The Holdovers .

Jesse Plemons in Jungle Cruise

Jesse Plemons (Prince Joachim)

Prince Joachim, the one who steals the arrowhead from Emily Blunt and attacks Dwayne Johnson's boat from a submarine in the Jungle Cruise trailer, is played by Jesse Plemons . He has has proved that he can play a good bad guy as Todd on the Breaking Bad cast , in one of the best Black Mirror episodes (“U.S.S. Callister”), in the dark comedy Game Night , Netflix’s I’m Thinking of Ending Things , and as a morally bankrupt FBI agent in Judas and the Black Messiah most recently.

Jungle Cruise could technically qualify as the latest of his multiple Disney projects, having appeared in Twentieth Century Fox’s Like Mike as a teen and Fargo - FX’s anthology series based on the 1996 Coen Brothers movie. The former Friday Night Lights cast member also worked with Steven Spielberg on Bridge of Spies , was directed by Martin Scorsese for The Irishman and the upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon , narrated Vice , and his role in Antlers (one of the most anticipated upcoming horror movies ) will finally hit the screen in October. 2021.

Edgar Ramirez in Jungle Cruise

Édgar Ramírez (Aguirre)

Also playing one of the villains in Jungle Cruise , named Aguirre, is Venezuelan actor Édgar Ramírez, who has played everybody from Gianni Versace to the role of Bohdi in the remake of Point Break after breaking out in Hollywood in a small The Bourne Ultimatum part. This led to getting second billing in the possession thriller Deliver Us From Evil , the lead in sports biopic Hands of Stone , and a few Netflix movies, including 2017’s Bright and the family comedy Yes Day in 2021. Following Jungle Cruise (his second film with Emily Blunt after The Girl on the Train ) Ramírez will reunite with his Zero Dark Thirty co-star Jessica Chastain in Netflix’s The 355 and has joined the Borderlands cast for Eli Roth’s film adaptation of the popular video game series.

Jungle Cruise's Veronica Falcón in Queen of the South

Veronica Falcón (Trader Sam)

Portraying a gender-swapped version of Trader Sam - a classic character from the original Jungle Cruise attraction - is Veronica Falcón, who made her English-language debut in the 2007 thriller Not Forgotten years before starring alongside The Suicide Squad ’s Alice Braga on USA’s Queen of the South and on HBO’s Perry Mason series reboot later in 2020. The following year has been huge for the Mexican actress so far, from a small part on the Falcon and Winter Soldier cast , a large part on the Why Women Kill cast, and an appearance in the latest of the Purge movies , The Forever Purge . Falcón will next star on Ozark Season 4 , in The Starling alongside Melissa McCarthy and Timothy Olyphant, and Apple TV+’s Mr. Corman with creator and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Jungle Cruise's Andy Nyman in Ghost Stories

Andy Nyman (Sir James Hobbs-Coddington)

Another British actor who could likely call Jungle Cruise the most high-profile credit on his resume to date (at least to American audiences) is Andy Nyman, who previously worked with director Jaume Collet-Serra on the Liam Neeson action thriller The Commuter in 2019. Much earlier, he starred in the original Death at a Funeral from 2007 , played The Tumor in Kick-Ass 2 , and appeared on Netflix’s Peaky Blinders as Winston Churchill. The co-writer, co-director, and star of Ghost Stories - one of the most acclaimed anthology horror movies in recent memory - also played a Jail Guard in Star Wars: The Last Jedi , had a recurring role in Amazon’s series reboot of Hanna , and starred in the Academy Award-winning biopic Judy in 2019.

It looks like the Jungle Cruise cast may help drive Disney’s latest theme park attraction-based movie toward a treasure trove of riches.

New Action Comedy With A 94-Year-Old Star Earns Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

This 48-year-old movie is the expendables of the kung fu movie genre that you need to see, willy wonka’s original “pure imagination” scene secret is a reminder of 1 drawback with the 2023 movie.

A film adaptation of a beloved Disney theme park ride,  Jungle Cruise stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt as Frank and Lily, two explorers searching for the mythical Tree Of Life. As they ride down the Amazon River, they find themselves in opposition to the villainous Prince Joachim, who is also searching for it.

RELATED: 10 Theme Park Rides That Deserve A Movie Adaptation

A fun family adventure,  Jungle Cruise  has a variety of fun and interesting characters throughout its 127-minute runtime. Though some of these characters might be lacking in the intelligence department, others succeed because of their sheer brilliance.

Nilo Nemolato

Portrayed  by actor Paul Giamatti , Nilo is a businessman that Frank owes money. Very much a side character, he appears sporadically throughout the film as a way to motivate Frank to take Lily to search for the Tree Of Life.

Though he seems to be a somewhat successful businessman, Giamatti's knowingly over-the-top performance as well as his various bone-headed mistakes cause him to come off as the least intelligent major character in the film.

Prince Joachim

The  main villain of the live-action Disney film , Prince Joachim (Jesse Plemons) is a maniacal German antiques dealer who is fascinated with finding the Tree Of Life. He spends much of the film chasing the three heroes down the Amazon river in his submarine.

RELATED: The 10 Best Disney Live-Action Remakes, According To Screen Rant

Though he tries to present himself as a sophisticated antique enthusiast that can also lead a crew, his various instances of unawareness (such as when he's tricked by Lily in the climax as she hangs off of the Tree Of Life) call his intelligence into question.

MacGregor Houghton

MacGregor is Lily's fish-out-of-water brother , and his reactions to the world around him provide some of the movie's funniest moments. Throughout the film, MacGregor must learn to adapt to the harsh climate of the Amazon if they are to find the Tree Of Life.

In addition to being unaware of the world around him, MacGregor also makes many mistakes such as when he is easily captured by Prince Joachim and forced to tell the whereabouts of Frank and Lily. However, he is somewhat redeemed by his decision to not pursue joining the Association.

Sir James Hobbs-Coddington

A character that doesn't appear very frequently at all in the film, Sir James (portrayed by Andy Nyman) is a British aristocrat and member of the Association that both MacGregor and Lily are eager to get accepted into.

He's a character that is obviously book smart, but his obliviousness to Lily and MacGregor's talents and knowledge causes him and the other aristocrats to appear foolish.

One of the conquistadors who found themselves stuck in the Amazon, Melchor isn't given much screen time, instead acting mostly as a supernatural henchman as he aids Aguirre on his quest for the Tree Of Life.

RELATED: 10 Live-Action Disney Roles That Were Perfectly Cast

A skilled fighter, Melchor never seems to show a lack of intelligence throughout the movie. He doesn't have a moment that shows that he is uniquely smart, but his conversations with Sancho and Aguirre show that he doesn't completely lack intelligence.

Sancho is also another conquistador who was among Aguirre's crew when they found themselves trapped in the Amazon by the forest. With almost the same amount of screen time as Melchor, Sancho serves as a henchman for Aguirre during his quest.

Similar to Melchor, Sancho comes across as a competent fighter. Though he isn't as skilled as Aguirre is as a leader or a fighter, Sancho has a couple of instances of wise decision-making, such as when the three of them discuss their plans of attack.

The secondary antagonist of the film, Aguirre (portrayed by Edgar Ramirez) is a fearsome conquistador who is awakened after a few centuries by Prince Joachim and his men. With a personal vendetta against Frank, Aguirre will do whatever he can to get to the Tree Of Life.

RELATED: The 10 Best Disney Live-Action Remakes, Ranked By Letterboxd

Throughout the film, Aguirre comes across as a tough, intimidating, and intelligent Disney villain . Though he is defeated when Frank fools him in the climax, he's still a warrior who is a tough adversary partially due to his intelligence.

A fan-favorite character from classic Disney ride, Trader Sam initially appears as someone that Frank hires to convince Lily to give up on the expedition. When Lily refuses to do so, Trader Sam becomes a vital part of their expedition.

The character isn't in it very much, but she does make one of the smartest decisions of the movie. As Trader Sam and MacGregor find their boat slowly being lifted out of the water by Prince Joachim's submarine, she wisely jumps into the water and avoids being captured.

Frank "Skipper" Wolf

An American boat skipper, Frank's strange aversion to helping Lily find the Tree Of Life hints that he has a personal connection to it. As Frank's past comes to light, his motivations begin to make more sense, as well as why Aguirre seems to be seeking him.

One of the smartest characters in the film, Frank makes many split-second decisions that get the heroes out of harm's way. In addition, Frank's quick thinking in the climax allows Lily to escape with a flower from the Tree Of Life.

Lily Houghton

The main character of the film, Lily is someone who is occasionally socially unaware, but more than makes up for it with her breadth of knowledge about the legend and the world around her. Initially feeling like a fish out of water, Lily uses her intelligence to adapt to every difficult situation she ends up in.

Lily's smartest moment comes in the climax, as she is hanging off of a branch of the Tree Of Life. Mirroring the film's opening scene, she is able to distract Prince Joachim from the crashing branches around him as he stands over her, ending in him falling.

News Disney+

The cast of disney’s jungle cruise talks humor, heart, and adventure.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for… the amazing… the colossal… the stupendous… the eighth wonder of the world… The back side of water, on the big screen! That’s right, the long-awaited film adaptation of Disney’s Jungle Cruise is finally here, taking the Disney Parks attraction we know and love and bringing it to life. Actors Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, and Edgar Ramírez sat down in July to talk about their new movie, Disney’s Jungle Cruise , when it first came to theaters and Disney+ with Premier Access.

Dwayne Johnson, who plays skipper Frank Wolff, is also a producer on the film. He explains of his decision to climb aboard the project, “I immediately just saw the potential of the opportunity to [adapt] a beloved and iconic Disney ride since 1955 when the park opened. This was Walt Disney's baby.” And the spirit of the attraction is alive in this film. Jack Whitehall, who plays MacGregor Houghton, brother to Emily Blunt’s Lily Houghton, says, “I would say the element to the Jungle Cruise ride that I like the most is that it doesn't take itself too seriously, and I think that that is definitely something that we took over into the movie.” Blunt shares, “I know when [Dwayne] and I first met Jaume [Collet-Serra, the director], we both asked him the same question. We said, ‘Well, what do you feel this movie's about?’ And he goes, "You know, it's about love." It was so perfect, 'cause you could've talked about all the action, the spectacle, and the myths, and the legends, and all that. But that's when I knew in Jaume we had an innate romantic, and a world builder, and that's what you need for this type of movie.”

History [ ]

In 1556 Spain, Aguirre's only daughter Anna had fallen ill and promised to find the Tears of the Moon to cure her and embarked an expedition with his adoptive brother Francisco as his cartographer. His ship sailed across the Atlantic ocean in storm the shipwrecked in the Amazon. A while after he and crewmates traveled into the jungle, each of them were getting sicker and dying off one by one. Aguirre wouldn't give up and continued to push forward but he too fallen ill from exhaustion only to have the thought of failure of to find the tree and saving Anna. He, Francisco and his three remaining conquistadors, Sancho , Melchor and Gonzalo were saved by the Puka Michuna tribe, the Guardians of the Tree, and used the petals from the Tears of the Moon's magic to revive them. Aguirre was joyed that he was getting closer to saving his daughter. Overtime he became impatient and begged the chief to give the sacred arrowhead and take him to the tree. However, the chief refused, deeming that Aguirre was unworthy.

In anger, Aguirre stabs the chief, fatally wounding him and his conquistadors began attacking the villagers. The chief's daughter escapes with the arrowhead while Francisco, who decided to help the villagers. Aguirre stabs Francisco for his treachery then chases after the daughter. For his cruelty, the dying chief used his last breath to protect the arrowhead and the tree, he cursed Aguirre, Francisco and the others to never leave sight of the river again. Aguirre blamed Francisco for betraying him and never seeing Anna again and fought him time and time again over the years. Francisco then cleverly traps Aguirre, Sancho, Melchor and Gonzalo in a cave far from the river, without it, they all turned all to stone. Over 300 years, the jungle had decayed his body.

Role in the film [ ]

He remains in the cave, encased within stone and dried up without any of the river water until Prince Joachim freed them in exchange for finding the Arrowhead and the Tears of the Moon. After being freed by Joachim with explosives detonating the cave and allowing the river water to flow within, many different creatures such as deadly snakes, poisonous frogs, and killer bees covered the bodies of Aguirre and his men, turning them into undead beings due to the curse.

Watching from a branch through one of his snakes, he sees Frank, along with Lily and McGregor Houghton, drifting off deeper in the jungle to another native tribe similar to the ones that cursed Aguirre and his crew. Aguirre follows them and ending up attacking all the tribe's men again.

They go after Lily, who has escaped from them and has the Arrowhead, but as soon as they caught up to her, the jungle pulls them back towards the river due to the curse that was placed on them long ago. They come back and become their creature forms, informing Joachim of the location of the Arrowhead and where Frank and Lily were heading to.

Joachim captures McGregor, catches up to Frank and Lily and forces them to find the temple where the tree is being held. As soon as Lily and Frank find the tree and bloom all of it's petals, the moon sets way too soon as the blossoming petals begin disintegrating. Lily plucks one of the petals and Joachim tries to take it from her.

As Joachim failed to get the petal, Aguirre betrays him and decided to go after the petal for himself. His crew attacks Frank and the others, that is until Frank crashes into the wall and causes the river's water within the temple to be emptied out, allowing the vines around it to surround Aguirre and his men along with Frank. Aguirre is once again petrified, snakes and all, within stone as he is set to be for seemingly forever.

  • In a complete contrast to the film Aguirre's goal of trying to save his daughter's life, the real Lope de Aguirre ended up killing his daughter Elvira to spare her from tortuous treatment immediately before he was captured and executed for his treasonous actions against the Spanish crown in 1561.

Dwayne Johnson's Dream Marvel Role Just Became Way More Possible After Major Career Update

  • Dwayne Johnson's new Disney deal opens the door for him to possibly star in future MCU movies.
  • Johnson has expressed interest in playing Luke Cage in the MCU, a dream role he campaigned for in the past.
  • With opportunities for Marvel to recast Luke Cage, Johnson's new deal with Disney could make his dream role a reality.

A new career update brings Dwayne Johnson the closest he has ever been to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe , and the actor previously revealed what Marvel role he would love to play. Johnson is one of the most popular movie stars in Hollywood. The Rock has become famous for his work in comedy and action films. A couple of years ago, Johnson made the jump to superhero fare, with the actor playing the lead character in DC's Black Adam . The project was meant to change the hierarchy of power in the DCEU, which did not happen.

Just as Johnson was joining the DCEU, DC was undergoing major changes. MCU Guardians of the Galaxy franchise director James Gunn and DCEU producer Peter Safran took over as the co-CEOs of the newly founded DC Studios. They decided to end the DCEU, telling Johnson that they had no plans for Black Adam, and reboot the franchise with their new DC Universe . As Johnson's time at DC has ended, the actor's career has now taken a turn that could see him star in future MCU movies , and perhaps his dream Marvel role could be how that happens.

Every Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Movie Ranked

Throughout his acting career, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has starred in both instant classics like Moana and critically panned movies like Black Adam.

Dwayne Johnson Just Signed A First-Look Deal With Marvel's Parent Company Disney

Marvel could be one of the rock's new franchises.

Marvel Studios is owned by Disney, which has recently become a new home for Johnson's production company, making a possible future partnership possible. Variety reported that The Rock's Seven Bucks Productions has signed a first-look deal with The Walt Disney Company . That deal will consist of the production company developing movies for theatrical and streaming, with Johnson potentially starring in them. The deal is also not limited to only filmed content, which could possibly lead to Johnson becoming part of Disney's theme parks through attractions and more.

Johnson's first-look deal with Disney is said to be multi-year, and allows " Seven Bucks a chance to collaborate across all Disney divisions ." That last part could lead to The Rock making his MCU debut, as Marvel is one of Disney's most important divisions. Johnson already has a working relationship with Marvel Studios' parent company , as the actor co-starred in Disney's Jungle Cruise alongside Emily Blunt, and The Rock will return as Maui later this year when Moana 2 releases in theaters on November 27, 2024 — with a return in the live-action adaptation also in the works.

Dwayne Johnson's New Disney Deal Explained

Dwayne Johnson's Seven Bucks Productions recently struck up a deal with the Walt Disney Company, but what is this deal and what does it mean?

The Rock Wanted To Play Luke Cage

Johnson's dream marvel role.

Johnson potentially developing movies for Marvel Studios as part of his new Disney deal could involve the MCU return of Luke Cage. The character was played by Mike Colter in The Defenders Saga , with the actor leading two seasons of Netflix's Luke Cage before the show and the rest of the Marvel series at the streamer were canceled. While Johnson has famously become tied to DC through his recent turn as Black Adam and all the promises to change the DCE that he made, the actor has long had his sights on Luke Cage.

In 2013, there were rumors that Marvel was considering casting Johnson in the MCU. Speaking to Collider , Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said, " I mean his name has come up in the past... I would love him to be part of the Marvel universe somewhere, someday ." That led to fans pitching roles The Rock could play in the MCU, and eventually, the actor himself decided to chime in. On Twitter, J ohnson thanked Feige for his comments and posted side-by-side images of himself and Luke Cage , campaigning to play the role. With his new Disney deal, that could finally happen.

The Rock Might Be Leading The Next Big Movie Universe, But It's Not For A Franchise You'd Expect

There are already plenty of franchises that have included Dwayne "The Rock"Johnson, but his next potential string of movies could surprise many.

How Luke Cage Could Return To The MCU

Marvel is setting up the perfect story.

Charlie Cox as Daredevil and more stars from Netflix's The Defenders Saga are returning to their roles under Marvel Studios . That seems to mean that if Luke Cage were to come back to the MCU, he would be played by Mike Colter. However, the actor has talked about returning in interviews, and while Colter would not rule out coming back, the actor seems at peace leaving Luke Cage in the past . That could leave the door open for Marvel to recast the character and have Johnson play his dream Marvel role as part of the star's new Disney deal.

Marvel could even continue with the threads set up at the end of Luke Cage season 2 . In the show, the character becomes the new crime boss of Harlem in order to keep the neighborhood under control. With Daredevil: Born Again set to have Kingpin become New York City's Mayor, the show's second season and movies like Spider-Man 4 could potentially include Luke Cage, as his new role would put him into contact with Wilson Fisk, for good or bad. Dwayne Johnson could then have a multi-project role in the MCU as Luke Cage.

Jeremy Renner Is Down for More ‘Mayor of Kingstown’... If He Makes It Through Season 3

The Big Picture

  • The Paramount+ series 'Mayor of Kingstown' depicts the McLusky family as power brokers navigating corruption and criminal factions in Michigan.
  • Jeremy Renner discusses his return to the series post-accident and the comfort of playing a familiar character.
  • Renner enjoys exploring the complex dynamic between his character, Mike McLusky, and Crips' leader Bunny.

From co-creators Taylor Sheridan and Hugh Dillon , the Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family, who are power brokers in the thriving business of incarceration in Kingstown, Michigan. In order to hold the city together in Season 3, unofficial mayor Mike McLusky ( Jeremy Renner ) must get a handle on the drug war occurring inside and outside the prison walls and figure out how to deal with Konstantin, the latest face of the Russian mob. Relying on shaky alliances and your own instincts can only get you so far in a world of heightened danger and violence with its ever-changing criminal element.

During this one-on-one interview with Collider, Renner, who’s also an executive producer on the series, talked about returning to Mayor of Kingstown before his body was fully ready, following a serious snowplow accident in 2023 that required a lengthy recovery, why he almost didn’t go back to the show, the blessing of playing a character he was already familiar with, rewatching episodes to find Mike McLusky’s physicality again, what he likes most about the worlds Sheridan creates, the fun he has exploring the Mike and Bunny ( Tobi Bamtefa ) dynamic, the diminishing numbers of the McLusky family, and feeling like there’s still more to explore in a possible Season 4. He also shared why he hasn’t yet returned to the Mission: Impossible franchise and whether he’d still be game to do so.

Mayor of Kingstown

In Kingstown, a city plagued by corruption and crime, the McLusky family serves as crucial mediators between law enforcement, criminal factions, and the prison system. Mike McLusky, taking over after his brother's untimely death, tries to maintain a precarious peace amidst widespread corruption and violence. As he juggles the demands of the various power players and seeks justice for the community, Mike encounters relentless challenges that push him to his limits and question his own moral boundaries.

Knowing His 'Mayor of Kingstown' Character So Well Helped Jeremy Renner Get Back to Work After His Accident

Collider: You went through a life-altering experience, and I’m sure returning to work and thinking about acting was probably pretty low on the list of things to do after that. Once you did feel like you could get back on set and you started Season 3, do you feel like it helped that you were returning to a character that you already knew?

JEREMY RENNER: Yeah, there’s no way I could have done it and dig into a new character and a new script, or if it was a movie. I require too much brain power to operate this body and recover. So, there was a comfortability in that. By the way, I still wasn’t ready. Even though my brain said, “You’re ready,” my body was like, “No, you’re not ready.” So, yeah, that helped. At some point, you have to pull the band-aid off and go fail, and then maybe you have to go back home and the whole thing falls apart, but you’ve gotta do it. The idea of doing fiction was so far [from my mind]. I almost didn’t go back because of that. I was like, “I can’t imagine learning these fake words and fake stories. For what? I’ve gotta worry about real life and my next step. I’m not gonna go do this. For what?” I had a come to Jesus with my career. I was like, “Maybe I just have to retire or quit. How absurd is it to go do fake stuff, just to entertain people? What a dummy! What have I been doing with my career?” But I found a way to overcome that, obviously, because we finished our season and I’m super excited about it.

Did you feel like you still knew this character and world very well, or did you have to go back and watch any of the previous seasons at all?

RENNER: Funny you say that. I did rewatch a few episodes, just to make sure I got the walk right again. I didn’t trust my memory. I didn’t trust my body. I didn’t have my body anymore. I was not in ownership of my body. Gravity owned it way more than I owned it and controlled it. I needed to learn this walk again. I was like, “How do I hold myself?” So, I really wanted to go back and use some episodes as examples, just to remind myself of the emotional side of it. I was like, “Okay, yeah, he is very aggro.” I wasn’t feeling that. I was feeling very delicate . I was feeling very broken. I was feeling fragile. These are not adjectives to describe Mike McLusky. I wasn’t even at 40% of where I needed to be to start this show, but we did it anyway, and I did all right.

When To Watch ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Season 3: Premiere Date, Episode Schedule, and More

Jeremy Renner and Taylor Sheridan are finally returning to Kingstown very soon.

You’ve worked with Taylor Sheridan more than once. Why do you think these worlds and characters that he creates work so well? What is it about them that you most connect with and that really speaks to you?

RENNER: He writes really well to the emotionality of character and he puts these everyman characters in extraordinary circumstances, in violent, harsh environments with an explosion or a death or some high extreme. He finds delicacy and intimacy in these moments and in that narrative of storytelling. There’s something really poetic about when you mourn the loss of somebody and you share it. There’s something very polarizing in the storytelling, but that makes it really interesting. A truth doesn’t exist without a lie. There’s conflict, and then there’s resolution. That’s Drama 101. I just think he does it really well, and he does it with extreme violence and also the poetry and the delicacy of it.

Jeremy Renner Sees the Mike and Bunny Dynamic as Similar to Baloo and Mowgli in 'The Jungle Book'

I actually really find the relationship between Mike and Bunny quite interesting to watch. They get each other and they have these conversations, but it also feels like a dynamic that we haven’t really seen. What have you found most interesting about exploring that and to have those scenes with Tobi Bamtefa? I could watch a show just of them talking to each other.

RENNER: Yeah, I could too. We have a lot of fun. Sometimes we get a little too crazy off script and it goes a little too sideways, but we have such a good relationship, as actors. Those characters coming together, you never know what’s gonna happen. When it’s based in such love and respect and brotherhood, if you will, they can come at each other with violence and threaten each other, but you know it’s just two brothers arguing. You see that they’re more allies than they are adversaries, but at any given moment, that could change. This season, you’ve got the good, the bad, and the ugly with both of them, but underneath it all, there’s a respect and an admiration with them. And then, there’s the David and Goliath of it, with this giant guy posturing with all his words and the little bulldog of McLusky, the Irish aggro. It’s a weird blend of energy. It’s like Baloo and Mowgli in The Jungle Book . It’s this beautiful dynamic. You want a movie of those two because that dynamic is really great.

This is a story that’s largely about family, what family means, and the dynamics within that, but the shape and the members of that family have changed since this all started. What does family mean to him this season?

RENNER: It’s all he’s ever had, and the numbers are just diminishing. It’s the only shred of hope, or ounce of hope. It’s the allies. It’s the commonality. It’s the common ground. It’s the safe zone. It’s the family stone, but it’s a tombstone. It’s foreshadowing for a lot of things. Family is everything to him. I do like that about McLusky and that family. It’s pretty powerful.

Jeremy Renner Is Joined by Several New Faces in ‘Mayor of Kingstown’ Season 3

Jeremy Renner is back in Kingstown.

Would you ever want to return to the Mission: Impossible franchise, if that came back your way?

RENNER: Yeah. I had to leave that. I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom [Cruise] so much. We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. I love that sense of humor. I love the physicality in the humor, in his prowess and with the stunts. Come on, Mission: Impossible is just fun. But my life didn’t ultimately agree with how those things are filmed. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then. Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen. I’d always jump into a Mission: Impossible anytime and back into Brandt. It’s great. William Brandt is a great character.

Jeremy Renner Believes There's More to Explore if They Get a Season 4 of 'Mayor of Kingstown'

After returning and doing this season, and now having Season 3 to show for it, do you feel like you still have more to learn with this guy or more things you’d like to explore? Would you like to do Season 4?

RENNER: I have to make it through Season 3 first. We’ll see if I do. I’ve enjoyed being with this character and exploring, and I always think there’s more to explore . When the world is set up so beautifully, like it is in Mayor of Kingstown , and all the chess pieces are there, every time you play chess, it’s a new game. It’s like that with this [show]. For the audience, they just get more involved and invested in the characters, just as I do. I’ve only seen the first episode, so I’m excited to see the rest of the season. I don’t know half the things. I only focused on my part.

Here's How Many Seasons of 'Mayor of Kingstown' Are Already Planned

"He has an ending and everyone knows about it."
