Tour Labuan Bajo bulan Januari – Februari 2023

Tour Labuan Bajo bulan Maret – Juni 2023

Tour Labuan Bajo bulan Juli – September 2023

Tour Labuan Bajo bulan Oktober – Desember 2023

Lalu bagaimana kalau tiba-tiba terjadi serangan?

PERSIAPAN SEBELUM MENGIKUTI PAKET TOUR LABUAN BAJO

Jadwal Tour Labuan Bajo

Bawalah uang cash secukupnya. Jangan sampai kamu kehabisan uang cash ketika ingin membeli oleh-oleh atau melakuka transaksi lainnya. Terutama saat berlayar, biasanya penyedia layanan paket tour Labuan bajo memisahkan paket tour dengan tiket taman nasional Komodo. Sehingga kamu bisa membayar cash di loket.

Travelmates

Journey to Komodo Island | Hello flores

Neither too long nor too short, 3 days of the excursion is just the sweet spot for pleasure seekers. You will have the chance to explore the pristine island, discover every main feature of Flores, yet got the opportunities to set your feet at a bunch of less touristic island. To see your travel journal hit all the iconic places and reveal new places! Isn’t it a traveler dream?

Get in the ship and start your Komodo tours from Labuan Bajo. In one hour the ship will carry you to Sebayur Besar, one of the twin islands just right at the border of the Komodo National Park. The island might be unheard of, but it has wonderful natural beauty both up and below the lands. Sebayur offers a stunning view for trekking and fantastic snorkeling as you will experience snorkeling between the twin island and see the blooming life underneath.

After a pleasant start, you can sail to the northern part of the Komodo National Park and land in Gili Lawa Darat, an island popular with its other name; the Pirate Bay. protected by the wide and deep bay of Komodo Island in front of it, the Pirate Bay is perfect for water sport, kayaking, and many other fun water activities

A trip to the island will not be complete without a dive or two in the ocean. That’s why you might want to include a visit to Manta Pointto swim with the giant Manta right from the deck. This shallow dive site is famous for Mantas sighting all year round. Not so long after, a group of Mantas will gracefully greet you from below, and when you have satisfied, the beautiful pink beach of Pulau Makassar awaits you to have a rest and relax.

Make the most of the last day by visiting an island that you have never landed before. If the time allows, you can even fit a trek to two islands at once, before heading back to the port town. You want this day to be remembered, so why not pay a visit to a peculiar place? You can take Kalong, the bat island, to your next itinerary. The island lives up to its name, as Kalong means big bats in Indonesian. Don’t worry, these furry flyers are mostly sleepy during the day. Your captain will try to place the boat under the bats’ path, where you can stand very close to this animal and observe their natural behavior.

End your journey with one last beautiful spot. Flores has abundant of amazing view, and Kelor Island can be your choice. Sits just in front of Flores hills, this small island offers hills trekking where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Flores, Rinca Island, and other islands between the blue ocean. Kelor is famous for its tranquility views, and isn’t that what you need after a long trip around Flores?

Soon it will be time to dock at Labuan Bajo. When the time has come, you will be left will exhaustion ad satisfied smile on your face.

5 days komodo cruise from labuan bajo

liveaboard | Hello flores

5 Days / 4 Nights

LABUAN BAJO SEBAYUR SIABA BESAR GILI LAWA DARAT MANTA POINT PADAR PINK BEACH RINCA KALONG KELOR LABUAN BAJO

For someone who always longing for a life by the sea, taking 5 days cruise is just a perfect experience. For almost a week, you will sail from island to island, hopping from beach to beach, and just relish what nature has to offer. Having a week to spare means you can explore every nook and cranny of the archipelago and have a pleasure to visit hidden spot not many people know about. Stop anywhere as you please and experience the whole beauty of these islands.

Your excursion begins at  Labuan Bajo , the famous port town where the ship will sail. This is your last chance to stack up your favorite snacks before being marooned for five days ahead. Meanwhile, as you have plenty of time to spend, so why don’t we use it to explore this beautiful little port town?

Beside the port deck, Labuan Bajo has a lot to offer. This is a great point for your  Flores exploratio n! Indulge in seafood delicacy at the fish market while enjoying the ocean view. Take a little trek down to  Rangko Cave  and swim at the ridiculously clear, secret swimming hole inside the cave.

If you have much time before the scheduled time of your Komodo Flores tour, take a mini-expedition to one of Labuan Bajo’s awesome waterfalls—the  Cunca Wulang and Cunca Rami , where you can enjoy swimming and canyoning before sailing off the shore. Cunca Wulang is especially gorgeous as the water streams from the canyon, entering a gorge where you can jump into the clear water and take a great shot of it.

Which beach will we land first? That’s the question. With almost a week of sailing, you have the chance to check every island on the archipelago off the list. Maybe you can start your journey with a small island with captivating beauty, both in the land and below, such as  Sebayur island .

A great place for a starter, Sebayur is blessed with undulating hills of brownish-yellow grass, providing a pleasing contrast with the surrounding ocean. Its charming view invites you to take a short track to the hilltop, to enjoy an unobstructed ocean view and sense idyllic remoteness.

If you are a licensed diver, don’t miss the chance to dive in Sebayur—diving is Sebayur’s main attraction, anyway!  A number of world-renown diving sites  lie just a few hundreds of meters off the shore, such as the famous Batu Bolong, Crystal Rock, and Castle Rock. The surrounding marine life is spectacular with sloping reef, coral walls, colorful sea critters, and schools of many kinds of fishes. It’s almost like a diving in clear aquarium. Past the beautiful coral plateau, the water is a heaven for pelagic hunters, turtle galore, micro diving, and occasional passing Mantas.

If you wish, you can spend your first afternoon in here. The island is famous as one of the best spot in Flores to enjoy the most beautiful sunset ever. Sits on the idyllic hills and watch the sky change into pastel colors, before heading back to the cruise and prepare for tomorrow’s adventure.

Passing to the neighboring Siaba Besar is highly recommended if diving is your thing. It’s one of highly popular easy dive, where you can spot pelagic, stingrays, and even dugongs. The site is also a favorite night dive among divers.

You can always opt for another island to explore if you prefer to stick with land, grass, and beaches. There are more islands in Flores than what you see in the itinerary samples, such as Bidadari, Seraya,  Kanawa , or Monkey island which each have its distinct beauty.

The next day, another adventure awaits. Start the day with something fresh, and docking to  Gili Lawa Darat  is on our suggestion. n fact, the island is one of the greatest places to catch a wonderful sunrise. Take a little tracking to the hills and enjoy an almost magical scenery when the sunrise from the horizon, slowly reveals the ocean and the bumpy hills of the archipelago from the darkness of the night. During January to May, you will be greeted with lush green grass covering the rolling hills, and the grass turns crisp and yellow during the dry season—turning the island into beautiful savannah.

An afternoon in the cruise clearly calls for a dip in the clear water, and it will be a great loss to miss a chance to meet the Manta. The  Manta Point  in Komodo National Park waters is the best place to see these intelligent creatures, as the water is rich with plankton - a delight for the Manta Rays. The Mantas are often traveling in a group and are present almost all year round. Lucky divers can even spend solid 30 minutes of interaction with the Mantas as long as the condition is right.

After spending first two days with water activities, your third day of excursion should be something fun. Why not visit the famous  Padar Island  today? A trek to this island is one of the most essential things to do during a Flores tour package, something you don't want to miss. As the hills lack of shady trees, it’s best to take a sunrise track early in the morning while the air is still cooler.

Reach the hilltop where you can catch a spectacular sunrise, and you will understand why radar Island steals thousand hearts of wanderer. Once you have finished exploring the magnificent surrounding, make your way down to Padar’s remarkable multicolor beaches, particularly the pink one. It’s time to chill.

Since you are visiting the pink beach of Padar, let’s just spent the whole day indulging in the blushing beaches? Lucky you, Hello Flores can take you to another pink beach in the tip of  Komodo National Park , hidden from other groups of travelers. Get into your snorkeling gear and you will see that the pink beach trails down beautifully to the sea bottom, blushing with the same hue.

Sunbathing in the pink sand while watching the contrasting blue ocean truly feels like a world away from everything. Sadly, it will come the time to leave this lovely beach, and it’s time for the next journey.

The fourth day of adventure will be perfect to visit the limelight of Komodo National Park, and that means the  Komodo Dragons  themselves! Sail to  Rinca , home of the biggest lizard on earth. A visit to this daunting creature can only be compared by a thrilling stop to massive bat cave, the  Kelor island . They are sleeping soundly during the day and you can watch them safely from the boat, but the real deal happens at dusk. Thousands of bats fly when the sky is turning into velvety tangerine, scattered and start preying their food in the neighboring islands. This is your last night on the cruise, and surely this will be a view you could never forget.

The last day of the excursion is perfect for a sleepy pleasure before heading back to the port town. After so many adventures, having a last authentic vibe of Flores will be a foolproof closure, indeed. One last trek to the hills and you are set to grab the wonderful panoramic view of Flores, Rinca, and other islands you have visited. relax in the white sand beaches before ending your Flores Komodo tours for good.

Please note that the itineraries may change at any time by the management of the boats due to among others; local condition, weather, strong current, windy and any unforeseen reason for the safety of passengers and the boat crew.

Turtle | Hello flores

“Don’t we all dream of the faraway?”

Labuan Bajo trip is what a dream made of. Hop the Komodo Liveaboard and spend the day sunbathing on the deck. A little while after boarding and leaving from Labuan Bajo , you will be surrounded with clear blue ocean that stretched to the horizon. The boat is sailing in steady speed, and it feels like you have all the time in the world.

Watch when the rugged green hills or the brown crisp savannah rises from the ocean, signaling your next visit. The archipelago is just what you want from island escape; dense jungle thickly covered the slope and drops to the blue ocean, only to get separated by a line of palm trees, soft sands beaches, and rocky reefs.

In the West Flores, three big islands and several surrounding small islands make up the Komodo National Park, each have something unique to behold. A journey to Flores will never be complete without a sightseeing tour to these islands, and the only way to get there is by boat.

A Komodo Flores tour will take you to explore the whole Flores and Komodo National Park. The exotic Flores is surrounded by equally beautiful islands, and one of the best ways to get a taste of them is by hopping on open trip from Labuan Bajo by cruise. Most of the population settle in Maumere, the largest town, and in Labuan Bajo, the port town. Other dwell on the smaller cities in Flores or cluttered at small villages deep behind the hills, leaving the nearby islands mostly inhabited and stay virgin.

Your choice is endless. Hello Flores believes that there is no perfect Labuan Bajo tour package. With Hello Flores, the itinerary follows your preference. You can freely pick up any islands that spark your interest and arrange the excursion that will really suits you. When there are lots of beautiful islands that has been enlisted to your traveling bucket list, feel free to take a two to five days Flores tour package as long as your time and budget allow.

Every trip begins and ends at the main port town of Flores, Labuan Bajo . It’s a 10 minutes car ride from Komodo Airport. Sail shortly after landing or spend a night first at the town, the choice is yours. Labuan Bajo is slowly brimming with shops, accommodation, and Western-style restaurants among other places in Flores, so it will be wise to stock up your needs and arrange your stay while you are still in town. Only few hotels make their online presence, so if you want to take a day rest after the excursion, it’s best to book prior to your cruise departure.

In the ASEAN Summit held in Cambodia last November, Indonesia was mandated to hold the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2023. As the Chair of ASEAN, Indonesia will also host the ASEAN Summit 2023, which will take place in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) in May this year.

President Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, decided to hold the ASEAN Summit 2023 in Labuan Bajo. Ahead of the summit, several new facilities have been built, including a new road from Labuan Bajo to Golo Mori in West Manggarai Regency. This new road, which has been inaugurated by President Jokowi, aims to improve connectivity in developing Labuan Bajo as a Super Priority Tourism Destination.

The construction of the Labuan Bajo - Golo Mori Access Road also supports access to the Tana Mori Special Economic Zone, which is located not far from Golo Mori Village. The location will be used for the leaders' retreat during the ASEAN Summit 2023, which will take place from May 9 to 11, 2023.

Golo Mori was chosen as the location for the retreat because of its stunning natural beauty. The expanse of hills covered with savannah and herds of wild buffalo grouped together on one hill and in the valley of the Golo Mori Village plain make it a perfect place to find peace and tranquility.

golo mori

New Destination Called Golo Mori

Access to Labuan Bajo - Golo Mori has now become easier with a new 25 km long road. Previously, the road to Golo Mori Village was a rocky and bumpy dirt road that took about 3 hours to travel. Now, this route can be covered in just 30 minutes from Labuan Bajo with breathtaking views.

Golo Mori was once an isolated area known only for its barren fields and hills covered in grass. Residents could only reach Labuan Bajo by motorboat, which took 2.5-3 hours when Golo Mori was still isolated.

The natural beauty of Golo Mori makes it a potential tourist destination. There are various tourist attractions here such as the Golo Mori site, beaches, hills, rice fields, and mangrove forests. In addition, Golo Mori also has cultural and social richness.

Recently, some of the beaches in Golo Mori have become popular tourist destinations visited by local tourists from Labuan Bajo. There are beaches such as Pasir Panjang Beach, Nggoer Beach, Soknar Beach, and Lajar Beach.

Enjoying Destinations in Labuan Bajo

In the future, ASEAN Summit participants will not only enjoy the natural beauty of Goro Mori, but also many other tourist destinations on the mainland of Labuan Bajo. Visitors can enjoy various natural and cultural activities in this city. What are the destinations? Let's check them out.

bukit cinta

1. Bukit Cinta

The first place to visit is Bukit Cinta, also known as Bukit Silvia. Tourists can see the natural beauty of Labuan Bajo on the islands with hilly terrain all at once by climbing this hill. At the top of the hill, visitors can enjoy the landscape of green hills. Come here during sunset for an even more spectacular view.

kampung melo

2. Cultural Tourism in Kampung Melo

Visitors can visit Kampung Melo to see the culture of Labuan Bajo, such as the Caci Dance, which is a typical dance of Manggarai. This dance is performed by men from Kampung Melo, who wear hats and carry whips to demonstrate attacking their opponents in the dance.

cunca wulang

3. Cunca Wulang Waterfall

If you want to play in the water but are looking for activities other than snorkeling and diving, visitors can go to the Cunca Wulang Waterfall. This waterfall is located in the Mbeilling forest area and is 200 meters above sea level, so the air around it is cool. At first glance, the waterfall looks like a small version of the Grand Canyon, with the river flowing between large rocks.

goa batu cermin

4. Batu Cermin Cave

This place presents natural fossils of marine animals on the cave walls. These walls seem to be evidence that the cave was once at the bottom of the sea. The origin of the name Batu Cermin Cave comes from one corner of the cave that has a hole in the roof. This hole serves as a way for sunlight to enter the rocks during the day.

For Pesona friends who have plans to visit Labuan Bajo, make time to visit the beautiful Goro Mori, which is significant because it will be the venue for the international event, ASEAN Summit 2023.

The Ultimate Labuan Bajo Low-Down

Labuan Bajo is the gateway to the awe-inspiring Komodo National park. This guide shows you the best things to do in Labuan Bajo, where to stay, and eat before embarking on your Komodo adventure.

Looking for things to do in Labuan Bajo? Of course, you’re coming for Komodo National Park, the snorkeling or diving and the dragons, right? Besides that, we will show you what else do do in Labuan Bajo, where to stay and eat for an unforgettable trip.

Once a sleepy fishing village, Labuan Bajo has emerged as one of Indonesia’s hottest travel destinations in recent years. Sitting on the western edge of Flores Island, the city is the gateway to the spectacular Komodo National Park with its out-of-this-world natural scenery, world-class snorkeling and adventures to suit every traveller out there.

Even with its rise to stardom, Labuan Bajo remains a fishing town at heart and the locals are as friendly and laid back as anywhere else in Indonesia. It’s easy to see why Labuan Bajo is becoming more popular and even better, the region has been named one of Lonely Planet’s best value destinations.

Update : We just returned from our second trip to Labuan Bajo. Sadly, Bajo Tacos has closed down, so no more legit tacos in Labuan Bajo. We’ve updated our post and added a few extra things to do to reflect our most recent visit.

Things to do in Labuan Bajo

Quick Guide to Labuan Bajo

Visited:  January & July Suggested time:  2 days + extra for Komodo Where did we stay:   La Cecile and Golo Hill Top Famous for:  Komodo National Park How to get there:  Several direct flights a day from Bali and Jakarta. If travelling on the Trans-Flores Highway, the most comfortable option is Gunung Mas to Ruteng (4 hours) or Bajawa (8 hours) Tip:  Hire a scooter to get around town if you’re a confident rider. There is no Grab or Gojeg, just informal scooter taxis, so negotiate a price before. Groups can ask their hotel to help arrange a car. Unique experience : Massage at Wae Molas

Golo Hilltop

Where to Stay In Labuan Bajo

Everyone coming to Labuan Bajo is here for Komodo National Park, including us. We spent a total of 4 nights in town and 1 night on an overnight snorkeling trip to Komodo.

We planned to stay two nights to give us time to arrange a boat trip to Komodo, and then return for another two nights to find our land legs again.

We narrowed it down to two places, but just couldn’t choose one, so we decided to split our stay between the two places. (If you’re posh you could call it a “ Twin Center City Break “). In the end, our two choices turned out to be very different, but both were very enjoyable.

Labuan Bajo travel blog

Sitting on the highest point in town, La Cecile probably has one of the best views in Labuan Bajo. Our complimentary pick-up from the airport took us to La Cecile in about 5 minutes and it was love at first sight. The sweeping view down towards town, the boats in the harbour and the islands is spectacular.

The views continue in our room with a balcony. Crisp white bedding and AC complete all our needs for a comfortable stay. The pool overlooking that view is just the place for a refreshing dip or to stare vacantly for some time.

The restaurant at La Cecile does a good job of both Indonesian and Western dishes. The included breakfast comes with many different options and of course, that breakfast view.

Some nights, there is a live band, and sipping on a cold one while the sky sets on fire with some good tunes is just magic. Sunset is quite popular at La Cecile and the atmosphere is fantastic.

Before booking, we were worried that the restaurant might be too noisy or interfere with our privacy at the pool. We are happy to say that our concerns were unfounded. Only guests are allowed in the pool area and the sound from the band doesn’t drift down to the rooms.

If you’re looking for something a little more upscale with fantastic views and great food, look no further than La Cecile.

An old favourite in Labuan Bajo, Golo Hilltop’s garden setting and quiet atmosphere is a great place to relax before or after your island hopping trip to Komodo. The pool here also has a good view over the islands and we really like how you are surrounded by the lush gardens. (We went in January, which is the rainy season, so please don’t be upset when you get there in July and it’s all brown).

The room is comfy and clean, and comes with a fan, AC and a mosquito net. We also like the little fridge in the room. You can tell Golo Hilltop has been around for a while, but we couldn’t really find any fault with it.

A simple breakfast of eggs, bread, fruit, coffee and juice is included and is had overlooking the garden and blue waters behind it.

Golo Hilltop is a solid mid-range option and we did enjoy staying here a lot.

Explore Komodo National Park

Padar island, Komodo

The real reason you come to Labuan Bajo is to explore the awe-inspiring Komodo islands to the west of Flores Island. With some of the best diving and snorkeling on the planet, crystal clear waters, pink beaches and mythical dragons, Komodo is a paradise for adventure lovers.

There are numerous tours to Komodo available in Labuan Bajo and on the internet. Take a stroll along Jalan Soekarno Hatta, the city’s main street to shop for and compare the tours on offer. We didn’t like the idea of joining a tour, so we were looking for a private boat to take us to Komodo.

We chartered a private boat to take us on an overnight snorkeling trip. We did our research and chose the spots we wanted to visit, communicated our needs to several agencies until we found a boat with the right price. Going private was quite affordable and perhaps the best decision we made for visiting Komodo.

Our island hopping trip revolved around snorkeling, chilling, napping, scaling Padar Island for that quintessential Komodo view and spotting dragons on Rinca Island.

If you’re short on time, consider booking this tour on Klook for a speedboat tour of Komodo .

Find the Best Sunset Spots in Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo faces directly west and that makes for spectacular sunsets. Order yourself a drink and watch the sky and water light up in a hundred shades of orange. Here are our favourite places to watch the sunset from:

Sunset in Labuan Bajo seen from La Cecile

La Cecile is not only one of the best hotels in Labuan Bajo, but also one (if not THE best) sunset spot in town.

The views and vibes from here are what sunsets are made for! With live music, cold drinks and happy people, the atmosphere is just so chilled. Everyone is all smiles and radiates good vibes as everything and everyone glows in the last orange light.

It is indeed the golden hour up at La Cecile during sunset.

Green Cherry (Formerly Tree Top)

Sunset in Labuan Bajo at Green Cherry

When we came to Labuan Bajo on our first trip, this great sunset spot right above the harbour was called Tree Top. Tree Top is no more, but instead, you’ll find Green Cherry here now.

It’s still the same location and the same stunning sunsets, just a different name.

Almost on the water overlooking the jetty, Green Cherry is just the place to watch everything turn orange. Watching the boats come in from the islands in that fantastic orange glow is almost therapeutic.

If you want this view every day, you can also stay at Eco Tree O’tel , which Green Cherry is part of.

Paradise bar, Labuan Bajo

Park yourself in the front row seat overlooking the islands and boats, order a cold one and enjoy the beats at Paradise Bar. It is actually a pretty apt name, considering it’s a bar, and well… it’s paradise.

Looking at the size of the bar and the stage, this place might just be a very good party venue. On our visit, it was nice and peaceful. Just how we like it.

Reach Nirvana at Wae Molas Spa

Wae Molas spa, Labuan Bajo

Wae Molas with their magical touch was on top of our to-do list on our second trip to Labuan Bajo. We knew what to expect, and looked forward to lying down on that massage bed to look down into the flower bowl beneath while our therapists made every trouble in the world disappear.

We had one of the best massages ever at Wae Molas after returning from our overnight snorkeling trip on our first visit, and we believe it’s still the best massage in Labuan Bajo.

Nothing says “holiday” and “relax” quite like a good old massage.

You might have to wait a while or return the next day if you didn’t make a reservation. We dropped by in the morning and made a reservation for the afternoon.

The spa is at Wae Molas Hotel , so you could have a drink or relax by the pool before or after your session.

We got the Traditional Full Body Massage for 90 minutes, which costs IDR 235K. People, trust me, it was heaven and we were like putty in their skilful hands.

Find Paradise on Kelor Island

The view from the top of Kelor Island. You can see vibrant blue waters in different shades and boats with mountains in the back

Those who say that you must go into Komodo National Park to see the most beautiful parts of Labuan Bajo are all wrong. They obviously haven’t been Kelor Island.

Stunning Kelor is one of the islands closest to Labuan Bajo, so come here to see the splendour of Komodo without spending hours on a boat.

A short but steep path goes to the top of Kelor Island, from where you’ll get one of the best views in Komodo. We think it’s the most beautiful spot in Komodo after Padar Island.

There are several warungs selling food and cold drinks, beer and coconuts, as well as toilets. You can easily spend a few hours here swimming, eating and relaxing. The clear and shallow water surrounding the island is perfect for dips and swims, but the snorkeling is poor.

Combine Kelor Island with Manjarite Beach (see below) which has great snorkeling for a fantastic half-day trip from Labuan Bajo.

Go Snorkeling at Manjarite

A long wooden jetty leading to Manjarite Beach over turquoise water

If your looking for decent snorkeling near Labuan Bajo, but don’t want to spend all day on a boat to get there, then Manjarite Beach is what you’re looking for.

Under an hour by wooden boat (slow boat) from Labuan Bajo harbour, Manjarite is an incredibly beautiful spot. Manjarite is uninhabited, so there are no facilities. The only way to get there is by renting a boat. Some tours do stop here for snorkeling, but most skip it and motor straight to Komodo.

Snorkeling at Manjarite is pretty decent. Expect to see a lot of hard coral and plenty of small, colorful fish. Manjarite has almost no current and beautiful scenery both above and underwater. Snorkelling here is suitable for all ages and abilities, thanks to the calm and shallow water.

Manjarite is a great spot for those who have visited Komodo already, but still want to do some island hopping and snorkelling without the entire dragon-Padar-Pink Beach -shebang.

We rented a wooden boat for a half-day trip to Manjarite and Kelor Island and paid IDR 1.5 million.

Where to Eat in Labuan Bajo

There are, surprisingly, very good options for eating in Labuan Bajo. Everything from typical Padang food joints to Mediterranean fare. The fresh seafood here is especially good, as you can expect from a fishing town.

Labuan Bajo Fish/Night Market

Fish market in Labuan Bajo

If you’re only having one dinner in Labuan Bajo, let it be at the fish market. The food and atmosphere is something unique to the city.

Officially named Pasar Malam, everyone simply calls it the Night Market or Fish Market. This market is the best place for fresh seafood in town. The stalls are set up around sunset and are popular among local and international tourists alike.

As a good fish market should be, the fresh fish, crabs, lobsters, shells, shrimps, octopus and squid are on display for you to inspect before you choose. (Smell, touch, probe-make sure those gills are fresh and red inside.)

Once you made a choice you can request how you want it prepared. The basic options are either grilled with BBQ or lemon-garlic sauce or cooked as a curry. We went with everything grilled (Bakar) and it was damn good.

You can also order sides such as chicken, rice, veg and drinks. If not getting fresh fruit juice, it’s a good idea to grab your drinks or beers from the shops just across from the stalls.

Google Maps

Happy Banana

Rainbow Poke Bowl at Happy Banana in Labuan Bajo

Happy Banana is the new cool place in town. It used to be Bajo Taco, but that closed down and Happy Banana is now the reigning king of cool.

Happy Banana is definitely not a dull place: pictures of naked women meet the gaze of Ganesh while the plates of food explode with colour and flavour.

On the menu, you’ll find everything healthy and delicious, from sushi, sashimi, poke bowls, quinoa burgers to edamame and falafel. Happy Banana has quickly established itself as the best restaurant in Labuan Bajo for vegans and vegetarians.

I ordered the Rainbow Poke Bowl, which was packed with goodness and colour. It didn’t only look great but tasted dynamite. Jin had the Tuna Tataki with miso mashed potato, which was damn good too.

Jin picks up. a slice of Margherita pizza from Fellas in Labuan Bajo

The best pizza in Labuan Bajo lives at a restaurant called Fellas, and man…are they good?!

Fellas was buzzing with locals and tourists when we arrived, showing that it has indeed dethroned La Cucina (see below) as the best pizza joint in Labuan Bajo.

Owned by the same man behind Baccala, another top-rated restaurant in town- the owner definitely knows what good food is and what makes a good restaurant.

Jin went with her traditional Margherita and I went with the owner’s recommendation – a Rendang pizza. The pizzas at Fellas are medium thickness, with the perfect base-to-topping ratio. My Rendang Pizza had a delightful spicy coconut flavour to the beef. Give it a try when you come.

Fellas open for lunch at 12 pm and closes at 11 pm every day.

A waiter is taking our order at Santeria in Labuan Bajo

We just loved Santeria. It’s laid back, has lovely outside seating, friendly staff and the food was amazing.

We came here for Jin’s birthday dinner, and wanted something special but nothing fancy, and Santeria fit this description perfectly.

It feels much like a local Indonesian Warung, but with a bit of finesse.

The grilled fish was perfect, the nasi goreng was smoky and flavourful, and the kang kung (water spinach) had the perfect balance between spicy and fresh. And of course the Bintangs were cold and served with a smile and a friendly chat.

Definitely pay these guys a visit for their amazing food and vibe.

La Cucina pizza, Labuan Bajo

Another great pizza and pasta place is La Cucina if you’re tired of seafood or nasi goreng , bakso and soto ayam .

We are no Italians or pizza experts, but we can say they have good pizzas (although not as good as Fellas). Their portions are large, and we could probably have shared just one. But we were hungry and fresh off a boat with salt still in our hair, so we went for a Margherita pizza and a calzone.

We have an unwritten rule about not leaving anything behind, so the plates were clean when we left- a sign that the pizza was good indeed.

We also appreciated the AC.

grilled octopus at Baccala in Labuan Bajo

Rated as the number one spot to eat in town, we decided to go check it out. Baccala looks brand new and the staff is all smiles. The food is really good and feels upmarket without being stuck up. This restaurant has. a slight European feel to it in terms of food portions and presentation, but the flavours and atmosphere is 100 % Labuan Bajo.

We had the grilled octopus and barracuda. Both dishes were beautifully presented. We just wish the portions were a little bigger. We had to order some extra roasted potatoes to fill us up.

Hong Signature Restaurant

Dinner at Hong Signature Restaurant in Labuan Bajo

For Chinese -Indonesian fare, Hong Signature Restaurant on Jalan Soekarno Hatta is your place. We had a perfectly grilled fish with spicy mango salsa, sweet and sour prawns and bbq clams. The food was incredible.

You can also find some dim sum on the menu. While the food was amazing, the dessert was disappointing.

beef rendang with boiled casava leaves and rice served on banana leaf

The restaurant at La Cecile, the hotel where we stayed, does some really good food. Going up to La Cecile to catch the sunset and a drink before dinner can make for a good night.

The menu has both Western and Indonesian dishes. We had the rendang and chicken satays which were both really good.

Get Yourself a Scooter

We are riding a scooter in Labuan Bajo

The best way to get around Labuan Bajo, and any other place in Indonesia for that matter, is by renting a scooter. This gives you the freedom to go where you please and it’s no fun walking anywhere in the tropical sun and humidity.

Ask your hotel, they might have scooters for rent. Our hotel was out of bikes, so I went to good old Google and sent a few WhatsApp messages, which also proved unsuccessful. Luckily Jin found a guy on Korean blogs.

Send Made Perama (WhatsApp +62 82144447272) a message about scooter rental. A 125cc goes for IDR 75K per day including helmets. He will come and deliver and collect it again for IDR 30K. All you need is to send him a copy of your passport and he’ll bring your bike to you.

How Many Days in Labuan Bajo

On our first Labuan Bajo trip, we stayed a total of five nights (one night which was on a boat). I actually made a mistake when I booked our plane tickets from Bali .

The plan was to stay in Labuan Bajo for 2 nights to find a boat charter to take us to the Komodo islands. After returning from our boat trip, we stayed one night before returning to Bali, making it 3 nights in town and 1 night on the boat.

But I made a fortunate mistake and booked the return to Bali one day later than planned. This turned out to be perfect. It was nice to simply relax by the pool and find our land feet again.

For our second trip, we stayed in Labuan Bajo for three nights, which was just great. Because we visited Komodo National Park before, we spent three days in Labuan Bajo with only a half-day trip to Kelor and Manjarite.

We suggest a minimum of three nights to make the best of your time in Labuan Bajo.

When is the Best Time to Visit Labuan Bajo

Komodo National Park in the rainy season

We visited Labuan Bajo in January (height of the rainy / low season), and July (dry/ peak season). Both visits were very enjoyable, so any time is as good as the other. Keep the following in mind:

  • Rainy Season (November – March): Rainy season was humid AF and hot, with rain every day. The landscape was lush and green. Rain fell mainly at night, so it did not have a negative effect on our travel plans. Snorkeling was good, but the visibility was not as good as in the dry season. Sunsets were roughly 250 times better for us in the rainy season. Low season meant it was not busy at all and reduced prices for accommodation.
  • Dry Season (April -October): Cool and dry weather, perfect for walking around, hiking and being active. Rain is very unlikely, so you’re in for lots of sunny days. The landscape was turning yellow-brown on the islands, but the gardens were still pretty and green in town. Peak season means it is busy (but not crowded). Lots of tours and activities on offer. Diving and snorkelling are top-notch in the dry season with fantastic visibility. Hardcore divers and snorkelers will want to come in the dry

How to Get to Labuan Bajo

Most of you will fly to Labuan Bajo Komodo Airport (LBJ).

Flights: Garuda, Batik, Citilink, NAM Air, Air Asia and Super Jet have direct flights daily from Jakarta and Bali. Wings Air flies to Bajawa, Ende and Maumere on Flores Island on propeller planes.

When searching for domestic flights in Indonesia, use Tiket , an Indonesian flight search engine. You won’t find many domestic flights on Skyscanner and the like, except for Air Asia and maybe Garuda. The other Indonesian airlines simply don’t exist there. We flew with Batik from Jakarta (2.5 hours), and NAM Air from Denpasar Bali (1 hour).

Overland: After visiting Labuan Bajo, we travelled east on Flores Island to Ende. The first step is from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng , which takes about 3.5 hours and costs IDR 160K.

The best way to travel from Labuan Bajo to Ruteng or Bajawa is Gunung Mas, a comfortable minibus with individual seats. Ask your hotel to make a reservation for you, and Gunung Mas will come and pick you up from your hotel.

Thanks for this great read. May I ask when you were there if there were concerns about malaria? Wanting to go but I have a 3 year old I don’t want to put at risk.

Hi Mands, We were there in February, and took no anti-malaria tablets. However, malaria is prevalent in the entire Indonesia. We’ve never heard of anyone catching it Indonesia, though. Going with kids is a completely different story. You’d better ask a doctor, malaria expert or someone more knowledgeable on the topic than us.

Great write up. Looked like a great trip, including the extra day Thanks for sharing.

Glad you liked it April. We are heading back to Labuan Bajo this summer and will update where necessary. I think I booked the right dates this time so should only be there for 3 days 😝

Hello, I will go at the end of January to labuanbajo. Are labuanbajo cruises to lombok operational at this season? Thank you so much

Hi Philip, January is the rainy season, and as far as we know, the tourist cruises between Lombok and Labuan Bajo are not running. The public ferries run yearround, though. It’s best to find these tourist cruises online and ask them directly whether they are operating in January.

I will be in Labuan Bajo in early November. Since you mention eating (cooked) fish, curries, rice dishes, etc. and drinking fresh fruit juices (made with water/ice), the question that comes to my mind is: did you encounter any digestive issues (troubles)? I’ve traveled a bit in Asia (Singapore, Hong, Kong, Tokyo) and never encountered issues, but I did (badly) in India and Mexico, so I’m not immune yet also not easily susceptible. Did you take any precautions while eating through Labuan Bajo (and Bali for that matter)? What advice can you give about eating out there? Thanks.

Hi Stefan, We were just in Labuan Bajo again last week and ate well with no problems. We’ve been to Indonesia 8 times and never had issues (touch wood).

When eating at the night market, inspect , smell and touch the seafood to make sure it’s fresh. Ice in drinks should be fine.

We don’t have any real advice on how to avoid getting sick, as this can happen any time or place and there is nothing you can do about it.

We are going to Bali in November, and now planning to fly over to Flores for 3 nights (2.5 days) to see a different part of Indonesia. Is the first week in November a good time to go, or would you recommend maybe waiting for another time.

Hi Ness, The weather is always unpredictable. Early November might be hot and humid with some some rain – but then it is the weather so no one knows what it will be like.

We visited Labuan Bajo in February (height of the rainy season) and in July (dry season). Both times were very enjoyable.

For the casual visitor anytime is as god as the other.

Labuan Bajo is a great addition to Bali

Great article and super useful information, thank you! For a solo traveler who doesn’t ride a scooter, how would I get around the island? My main interest is the 3D2N boat trip to Komodo island, but of course would love to explore a bit of LBJ while I’m there anyway. The town itself is pretty small and walkable, right?

Hi Katie, if you’re staying along (or near) Jalan Soekarno Hatta – the main street in Labuan Bajo, you’ll be fine with walking. Most of the restaurants and travel agents are along this stretch. If you need wheels, ask your hotel to arrange a ojek (motorbike with driver and you sit at the back) for you.

labuan bajo trip 2023

  • N9138QSpeterf 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful views, but dangerous snorkling. Komodo and Padar islands are really beautiful. We visited these two islands in the morning. After that, we went open water snorkling at the manta point and turtle point. This was really chaotic. During the snorkling, a lot of boats are chasig after the mantas to get a glimpse of them. Our boat nearly ran over me because the captain was not looking in front of the boat. Also, a woman on our trip became exhausted because of the strong current near turtle point and could barely reach the boat with the help of other passengers. The crew didnt notice. I wouldn't recommend going open water snorkling with this tour. Read more Written 21 April 2024

We don’t know his real name, could be Carlos or some guy from Columbia 😊. The islands are simple mind blowing. Six locations & each had something unique to offer. The coral sightings are simply outstanding. So close to the surface that the fear is of getting scrapped. V colorful. We spotted turtles, manta rays, … awesome experience. A shoutout to all the other tour members who were so friendly that by the end of the tour it felt like family members separating. Read more Written 14 December 2023

  • OnwardTraveller 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Trip These day trips are advertised all around Lubuan Bajo. It looks like RPH 1m is the real fee with else going to whoever makes the booking. Extra 300k payable on the boat for Komodo Park entrance fees. Still, absolutely worth it for the Komodos and five other stops for snorkelling swimming and hiking, over a 10 hour trip including lunch and water/coffee and the chance to also see turtles and mantas. Thoroughly recommended! Read more Written 31 August 2023
  • Desdemonep 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Terrible agencia. Como todas. Un engaña turistas más pagando un dineral. Terrible agency and excursion in general. Padar is beautiful in itself, the reefs too, but Komodo is a fraud. 2 dragons, a whole souvenir market and the so-called guides, who aren't, because they don't explain anything to you, smoking and throwing their butts into all the trees. Regrettable. This company has 2 boats, New Hope 6 and New Hope 9. 1 guy explains 4 things to you and the other 4 or 5 who go with him eat and do nothing all day. They make you go from boat to boat and in the end a girl fell between them. No one went looking for it, we had to call their attention so that they deigned to come closer. If a serious accident happened with these people, you have a really difficult time. In general, all agencies are a tourist joke. Read more Written 11 August 2023

Huge shout out to our Guide Christian and the rest of the boat crew (Bayu, Ades and Dedi) who looked after us so well and for Renata for handling all my booking enquires pre-trip. We went for the private speedboat option to maximize our time. Boat arrived on time, crew worked to our itinerary and we visited Padar island, pink beach, Komodo and swam with manta rays. We were extremely fortunate to not only see a Komodo dragon up close but to actually witness 3 Komodo’s feeding - rare opportunity! Pink beach beautiful too. Padar island views from the top were amazing - but of course extremely crowded as we went in peak season. My son loved the snorkeling (- saw lemon sharks, turtles and the MantaRays!) Lunch on the boat was great too. Highly recommend Eastcruisekomodo - amazing trip! Read more Written 20 July 2023

  • Stephen D 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Professional & Friendly As I understand it, most speed boat tours in Komodo have the same itinerary; 6 places including Padar Island, Pink Beach, Loh Liang (Komodo dragons), Taka Makassar, Manta Point, Kanawa Island. Spectacular places. Tours start around 6am and finish 4:30pm. As a former speed boat tour operator in Thailand, the difference is in the booking process, cost, organisation, staff and boat. Booking process online was smooth. Automated email received with a voucher. They got in touch via Whatsapp to verify hotel and pickup details. Cost wasn't the cheapest I could find quoted online, but it was the cheapest online I could pay with a credit card, only 500 IDR more expensive with a better overall rating. Where you might save is the entrance fee...450k IDR for foreigners and 200k IDR for Indonesian. Other websites I saw quoting up to 1.3M IDR (the guide confirmed others pay more when paid directly to Komodo), which cause me some confusion when booking. I even Whatsapped a few operators and each sent different amounts! Organisation: Pickup was exactly on time. It didn't take long to pick up other guests. We were at the boat in 15 mins. East Cruise are one of the bigger companies, as such they're very organised directing people on to different boats, collecting outstanding balances, etc. The timing at each place on the tour was perfect...enough time to do stuff with it being too short or too long and waiting around. The guides had good command of tourists and directed them well. Staff: all super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, even the taxi driver Boat: exactly as you see in the photos...one lower deck with 2x2 and 2x3 seating, with an upper deck. They're clean, comfortable, reasonably spacious. Equipment is decent and in repair. Overall a highly pleasant experience Read more Written 15 May 2023

Labuan Bajo Guide to Incredible Wildlife

Labuan Bajo , nestled amidst the stunning landscapes of Indonesia’s Nusa Tenggara Timur province, is a treasure trove of natural wonders, renowned for its exceptional marine biodiversity and captivating wildlife encounters. From the Komodo dragon, the legendary prehistoric reptile, to gentle manta rays gliding through the crystal-clear waters and majestic whale sharks filtering plankton, Labuan Bajo offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness some of the world’s most fascinating creatures.

Komodo Dragons: Prehistoric Giants Roam the Wild

Komodo Dragon Animal in Labuan Bajo

No exploration of Labuan Bajo would be complete without encountering the Komodo dragon, a prehistoric-looking lizard that reigns supreme as the largest on Earth. These apex predators, found exclusively on the islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, and Gili Motang, can reach up to 10 feet in length and weigh over 300 pounds. Their venomous bite and powerful jaws make them formidable hunters, captivating the imaginations of explorers for centuries.

To safely observe these fascinating creatures, visitors can embark on guided treks through Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. As you trek through the rugged terrain, keep a watchful eye for Komodo dragons basking in the sun, roaming the savannah, or even swimming in the water. Their presence commands respect and awe, a reminder of the enduring power of nature.

Manta Rays: Graceful Dancers of the Underwater Realm

With their wide wingspans that can reach up to 20 feet, manta rays are truly mesmerizing creatures. These gentle giants glide effortlessly through the water, their movements resembling a graceful ballet. Their feeding behavior is equally captivating, as they gather in large numbers to clean themselves, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for divers and snorkelers alike.

Manta rays can be encountered in various locations around Labuan Bajo, including Manta Point, a renowned dive site where they congregate in abundance. Snorkeling or diving alongside these graceful creatures is an unforgettable experience, allowing you to witness their elegance and beauty up close.

Whale Sharks: Gentle Giants of the Deep

Whale Shark in Labuan Bajo

The largest fish in the sea, whale sharks are awe-inspiring creatures that can grow up to 40 feet long and weigh up to 20 tons. Despite their immense size, these gentle giants pose no threat to humans, feeding primarily on plankton and small fish. Their presence exudes an aura of tranquility, a testament to the harmony of nature.

Whale sharks can be spotted in various locations around Labuan Bajo, particularly during the plankton-rich months of July to October. Swimming alongside these gentle giants is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, allowing you to connect with the vastness and wonder of the underwater world.

Beyond Iconic Encounters: A Tapestry of Wildlife

Labuan Bajo’s diverse wildlife extends far beyond these iconic species. From colorful coral reefs teeming with marine life to lush forests inhabited by exotic birds and reptiles, the island’s biodiversity is truly remarkable.

  • Marine Life: Beneath the turquoise waters of Labuan Bajo lies a vibrant underwater world teeming with life. Schools of vibrant fish dart among coral reefs, while sea turtles glide gracefully through the seagrass meadows. Encounters with these marine creatures offer a glimpse into the delicate balance of the underwater ecosystem.
  • Birds: The skies above Labuan Bajo are alive with the calls of exotic birds. From the vibrant plumage of parrots to the majestic flight of eagles, these feathered creatures add a touch of color and vitality to the island’s landscape.
  • Reptiles: Beyond the Komodo dragon, Labuan Bajo is home to a variety of reptiles, including snakes, lizards, and geckos. These creatures play essential roles in the island’s ecosystem, serving as predators, prey, and decomposers.

Responsible Wildlife Viewing: A Shared Responsibility

When observing Labuan Bajo’s incredible wildlife, it is crucial to adhere to responsible viewing practices to minimize disturbance and protect the delicate ecosystems.

  • Follow Instructions: Always follow the instructions of your guide, who possesses the knowledge and experience to ensure safe and respectful interactions with the wildlife.
  • Maintain Respectful Distance: Maintain a respectful distance from the animals, avoiding touching or feeding them. It will ensures your safety and protects the animals.
  • Minimize Disturbance: Avoid making loud noises or sudden movements that could startle or disturb the animals.
  • Leave no rubbish: Protect the clean environment without leaving any rubbish and avoid destroying plants.

By following responsible viewing practices, visitors can ensure that Labuan Bajo’s incredible wildlife continues to thrive for generations to come, preserving the island’s natural heritage for all to marvel at.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com -  Perputaran uang selama empat hari penyelenggaraan HUT ke-52 Persatuan Perusahaan Real Estat Indonesia (REI) di Labuan Bajo , Kabupaten Manggarai Barat , Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) mencapai Rp 100 miliar.

Sebut saja sektor perhotelan, kuliner, kerajinan tangan ( craft ), transportasi, jasa hiburan,  event organizer , penampil hiburan, tour and travel services,  MICE, dan lain-lain.

Hal senada disampaikan Ketua DPD REI Nusa Tenggara Timur Bobby Pitoby.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.
